Looking for Adventure? Head Out on the Highway!

People have a lot of pent-up travel lust after years of pandemic restrictions and uncertainty. Air travel in particular has seen a huge rise this summer, with the busiest day in the industry's history occurring in June. Rather than fight those busy flights, hit the road in a new vehicle that can fit all your luggage and maybe even help you keep your cool.

No single car is the perfect road trip vehicle for everyone, but great road trip cars have some features in common. We looked for vehicles that have good gas mileage for fewer stops at gas stations, enough USB ports to keep everyone's devices charged up and comfortable seats in all rows. Driver assistance features are important too, as they can help reduce fatigue during long days on the road.

When new information becomes available, we update our reviews, so the information in these slides might not match the reviews exactly.

Let's take a look at the best road trip cars so we can – finally – get out of town.

2023 Ford Mustang GT

2023 Ford Mustang

$27,770 | usn overall score: 9.2/10.

Sometimes you want to live the American road trip dream in an impractical sports car. But guess what – the 2023 Ford Mustang is a rather practical sports car with one of the highest overall U.S. News scores. There are several available engines, but sticking with the base turbo-four means an estimated 32 mpg on the highway.

Living the American muscle car fantasy on the open road is best for two people, since the Mustang's rear seats are pretty small. Its standard infotainment system has a 4.2-inch display – not a touch screen – and a Wi-Fi hot spot. Standard safety tech includes automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist. But maybe most importantly, for purposes of the dream, the Mustang is available as a convertible.

Road Trip Car Characteristics

Passenger space : People turn cranky when they aren't comfortable after hours on the road. There needs to be space for everyone to stretch out.

Cargo space : At the very minimum, you'll be bringing luggage along and maybe also camping gear or tubes for floating the river. Make sure there's space for your gear.

Fuel economy : Stopping for gas on a road trip can get expensive. Fuel efficiency, particularly from hybrid powertrains, can ease the pain of stopping at the pump.

Infotainment : An AM/FM radio is no longer sufficient for most people. An infotainment system that's easy to use while driving and can connect to smartphones is key.

Safety tech : Driving long distances causes fatigue, and fatigue causes accidents. Modern driver-assistance features can help you stay alert and in your lane.

Reliability : No one wants to be the car in the breakdown lane while on their road trip. A good predicted reliability score shows that a particular model has on average been a solid performer over time.

The 22 Best Grand Touring Cars

GT cars combine comfort, style, and performance to create a swift, opulent driving experience.

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Sports car, Lexus lfa, Automotive design, Supercar, Coupé, Rim, Wheel,

Grand tourers aim to provide the best of what the car world has to offer—the greatest luxury, the highest performance, and the most beautiful styling. Here are some of the greatest GT cars out there.

Ferrari 456

First sold in America in 1995, the 456 is a traditionalist's grand touring car, a front-engine V-12 Ferrari with seating for four. We tested this $225,000 executive transport by racing it across Texas against a similarly priced Mooney airplane. It lost, but not by much. Rated at 436 horsepower, the 5.2-liter V-12 sings delightfully up to the car's top speed of 186 mph. We'd go for the six-speed manual, but there's a four-speed automatic (GTA) for the comfort-oriented, who will find the leather-lined interior and cockpit-adjustable suspension alluring. The 456M (modificata) had only six more horsepower, an updated interior, and mild styling tweaks when it arrived for 1998; it was replaced by the 612 Scaglietti in 2004. For this exercise in spendthrift Ferrari ownership, we looked at a '97. When Hagerty said the average value was only $41,000 and a superb example would still be under $60,000, we hopped over to the NADA price guide, which reported that last year the low retail price observed was $43,900, the high price was $73,800, and the average was $53,000. Nice.

Chevrolet Corvette

2020 mid engine corvette

On the surface, you might not think the Corvette would make for a good GT car. It has just two seats, and sports-car focus. But really, thanks to comfortable magnetic ride suspension, a massive trunk, and torquey V-8, it's great on long trips. This one's up for bidding on eBay.

The M6 is basically a two-door version of the wonderful M5, meaning it gets the same powerful engine and fantastic driving dynamics. The last-gen model shown here even has a V-10 engine. Here's one with a rare manual transmission you can own now.

Bentley Continental GT

The Continental GT is all-new for 2019, with a restyled body and a 626-horsepower W-12 engine, or a 550-hp V-8. It looks great, and drives as well as you'd expect. This used example is barely broken-in, and you can own it today.

Ford Mustang GT

The Mustang has come a long way from its crude muscle car beginnings. It's a truly fun car to drive in all environments, whether it be the track, the drag strip, or the street. And because it has four seats, you don't have to compromise much. Here's a brand-new one you can own right now.

Ferrari 812 Superfast

Ferrari's front-engined V-12 family of cars is a lineage of fantastic daily-drivable machines, all with massive power and the great sounds you expect from something with a Ferrari badge. The 812 Superfast is the latest from Maranello. This one's painted in a lovely shade of black, and you can own it.

The McLaren GT is named appropriately, as it's one of the most comfort-minded cars to come out of Woking. There's ample luggage space, a more compliant suspension, and a new infotainment system to make sure occupants are as satisfied as possible. Here's one with just 44 miles on the clock for sale now.

Ferrari GTC4Lusso

The GTC4Lusso is currently Ferrari's most practical car, with all-wheel drive and four usable seats. It also has enough luggage space for long journeys thanks to that sweet shooting brake design. This one's painted in a lovely shade of white, and you can own it.

The XJS can be found for relatively low prices on the used market thanks to their reputation for unreliability. But if you're willing to put up with that, you'll get a wonderful V-12-powered GT experience. Here's one up for bidding on eBay now.

Aston Martin Vanquish

Aston's first Vanquish remains one of the prettiest cars the company has ever put out, complimented by that wonderful V-12 soundtrack. And if you're not a fan of the automatic transmission, you can send it back to the UK to have the factory put a manual transmission in. This one's for sale on eBay right now for just $70,000.

Aston Martin DBS Superleggera

If you'd rather have something a bit more modern from Aston Martin, consider the DBS Superleggera. It's the most capable front-engine production car on offer from the brand right now, with 715 horsepower from a twin-turbo V-12 under the hood. This one only has 1500 miles on the odometer, and it's for sale.

Rolls-Royce Wraith

While the Wraith is undoubtedly more full-on luxury machine than performance-oriented grand-tourer, it still deserves a spot on this list. It's the sportiest car in Rolls-Royce's lineup, packing a twin-turbo V-12 making an impressive 624 horsepower. Here's one painted in purple for sale now.

The RS 7 isn't exactly a two-door coupe, but its grand touring intentions are just as pure as any other car on this list. It provides massive power paired with loads of tech and comfort features, plus an all-wheel drive system than can get you through pretty much anything. And it looks cool as hell.

Porsche 928

The 928 was originally meant to replace the 911, coming as a strong departure from Porsche's original formula. The 928 used a front-mounted, water-cooled V-8 sending power to a rear transaxle. Thankfully, the 911 persevered , but we love the 928's decidedly 1980s style. This early manual-equipped model is in great condition, and it can be yours.

Porsche 911

Of course, the 911 has always been a great all-rounder worthy of being on this list. It's comfortable enough to drive everyday, supremely luxurious, and plenty capable around your favorite back road. Here's a used 2020 model up for grabs on eBay now.

Maserati GranTurismo

The GranTurismo has been around for more than a decade, nearly unchanged from when it first hit showrooms in 2007. With a Ferrari-designed V-8 and stellar looks, it remains one of the most stylish new cars you can own. Over 10 years later, it's still being built, and the refreshed models look great . If you're willing to brave the maintenance costs, older models can now be had for under $30,000 .

Jaguar E-Type

You can't mention Grand Touring cars without bringing up the Jaguar E-Type. It's become an icon in the classic car world, sought after by collectors for its fantastic design and wonderful driving elements. You can own this British racing green Series I model today.

Mercedes-Benz SL

For decades, the Mercedes SL has occupied a corner in the company's lineup as a two-seater GT perfect for long drives and top-down fun. Nowadays, cars like the S-Class convertible and AMG GT convertible offer similar top-down joy, but we still love the SL. This AMG SL63 has just 8100 miles on the clock, and it can be yours.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe

If you need a bit more space in your Mercedes-badged GT car, the bigger S-Class is a perfect SL alternative. Available in coupe or convertible form, it's perfectly suited to cruise without a fuss for hours in endless comfort. This S63 model is for sale right now online.

Lexus LC500

Though the LC500 uses Lexus's 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V-8, it's designed to be an all-around daily driver with a goal of comfort and satisfaction behind the wheel. The result is one of Lexus's best cars ever. Here's a beautiful blue model you can own now.

The 10 Best Road Trip Cars for Open-Road Adventures

Best Road Trip Cars 0 Hero

By: Tim Huber Published: Aug 16, 2023

In 1956, the U.S. government passed the Federal-Aid Highway Act, allocating $26B to construct an initial 41,000-mile  interstate network . In response to the network’s construction, countless restaurants, motels, and roadside attractions would pop up along these now-iconic highways in order to cater to automotive travelers — ultimately kicking off a grand and long-held tradition of road tripping that’s as American as baseball or apple pie.

And while there are plenty of factors that can have an enormous impact on the overall quality of your time spent on the road — such as your starting point, ultimate destination, travel companions, and budget — the single biggest variable is undoubtedly one’s choice of ride. With the exception of a handful of  new EVs , practically every car currently in production is more than capable of taking on cross-country touring duties, however, there’s a shortlist of models that objectively lend themselves to road-tripping far better than anything else on the market. And it’s this crop of vehicles that we’ll be exploring today in this guide to the best road trip cars you can buy — delving into the most capable long-distance cars available, along with what factors and qualities make a model ideal for long-haul travel.

What Factors Make For An Ideal Road Trip Car?

Though there are clearly several blatant areas to explore when buying a road trip-focused car — such as range, comfort, and cargo space — there’s also a myriad of less obvious, though still massively important elements to take into consideration when shopping in this space. Below, we’ll briefly touch on seven of the most pivotal areas to think about prior to pulling the trigger on your purchase.

Range:  Though most of the world’s major highway networks are littered with gas stations and service shops, the reality is that having to exit the freeway and pull over every other hour to fill up isn’t exactly convenient, which is why a car’s range (on a single tank) is of such importance. At the very least, you’ll want a vehicle that affords several hundred miles of autonomy between trips to the pump. This area is even more important for  electric cars , as — despite there being close to ten million charging stations scattered across the planet — there are far more gas stations than EV chargers. As such, you’ll not only want to review an EV’s range, but also the charging network that’s available for said EV.

Comfort:  Being comfortable in a car is obviously important, though this factor matters far more when dealing with road trip cars, as drivers — and their passenger(s) — typically spend hours at a time inside the cabin of these vehicles. Consequently, this makes a given car’s comfortability level of extreme significance. And while there are dozens of factors that contribute to how comfortable a car is, some of the more important elements to consider are the seats, their construction and upholstery, their level of adjustability, and whether they offer heating, cooling, or massage functions. Additional areas like dual climate control and robust soundproofing can also hugely up a car’s comfortability.

Amenities:  While there’s no denying that comfort is a hugely important area when dealing with road trip cars, there are nonetheless a handful of additional features that can very much bolster one’s enjoyment during long-range drives. Alongside amenities like touchscreen infotainment setups and moon/sunroofs, there are also features like web browsers and connectivity to streaming services that can enhance the users’ experience. Likewise, most of today’s best road trip cars also pack advanced suites of electronic driver assists such as forward collision warning and avoidance systems, lane keep assist, blindspot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control, just to name a few. Some brands also offer supplementary amenities, like Tesla, which sells cars equipped with features like “Caraoke,” HEPA filtration systems, and of course,  the American automaker’s  state-of-the-art autopilot system.

Storage:  The longer the road trip, the more gear the driver will typically need. As such, the amount of cargo space afforded by a particular vehicle is of utmost importance, as roomier rides will boast more internal real estate for stashing bags and equipment. And, though this is clearly a crucial area to consider when reviewing cars for road trips, it is worth pointing out that one can always supplement a car’s internal square footage with a roof rack or rooftop cargo box, though this option is obviously less convenient — and will often slightly mitigate fuel — or battery — consumption. You’ll also likely want to consider how many people the car seats, as well as how much cargo space is available for each passenger’s bags and gear. Backseat legroom is also a crucial area to consider when reviewing this element.

Reliability & Service Intervals:  The reality is that the vast  majority of new cars  are incredibly reliable and should have no issue driving cross country several times over. With that said, there are some models with better reputations when it comes to overall reliability. Additionally, if you plan to use this vehicle for extensive road-tripping, you’ll also want to look into the model’s required service intervals, as these figures can hugely vary. And, whether it’s a road trip car or a daily commuter — or even a motorcycle — it’s always worth looking into whether any recalls have been issued for a particular model.

Manufacturer & Dealer Support:  When going on a road trip, not only is it important to review how often a car needs to be serviced but also where it can be serviced, as some makes will boast a markedly more robust dealership and support network should you need a part repaired or replaced. This extends to areas like the availability of roadside assistance offered by a marque. It’s also worth pointing out that rarer and more exotic models will make for a much more difficult time sourcing replacement parts – as it’s not that hard to find a replacement component for a BMW car just about anywhere in the country, though the same can’t be said for models from brands like Bentley or Aston Martin.

Drivetrain & Performance:  Unlike commuting where the main objective is simply to get from A to B, long-range road-tripping is all about enjoying the journey and embracing the open road. As such, having a car that affords a more spirited driving experience makes for a markedly more enjoyable time behind the wheel, which is why reviewing a model’s engine is so important. Alongside the engine configuration itself, you’ll also want to check out its  aspiration type  and displacement — as well as horsepower and torque figures, 0-60mph times, and top speeds. A car’s suspension package is another crucial area to consider, as it will directly impact a model’s overall handling, as well as the smoothness of the ride. Quite a few cars also offer the best of both worlds with adjustable air ride suspension setups that can be lowered for spirited runs through the canyons, or raised back up for ultra-smooth and plush freeway travel.

12 Of The Coolest Grand Touring Cars Ever Built

Aston Martin DB5 in warehouse

The letters GT crop up in a huge range of automotive segments, from the VW Golf GTI to the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT . In almost all cases, the letters stand for "grand touring" — or the Italian "gran turismo," from where the English phrase is originally derived. Arguably, neither of the cars previously mentioned bear any relation to the original meaning of the term, and neither do many of the modern cars that feature GT badging. In the traditional sense, grand touring cars are those built to blend the attributes of a sports car with those of a luxury car, providing the best of both worlds.

They're designed to be well-appointed and comfortable to drive but also powerful and athletic. That makes them excellent for long-distance road trips as well as high-speed driving. Sports cars, by comparison, are traditionally engineered primarily for the latter, while luxury cars focus on comfort over performance. The grand tourer designation stretches back to the days of the European post-war auto industry, and there have been countless GT models produced since. With that in mind, we've rounded up 12 of our favorites that stick out as particularly cool examples of the segment, from classics to cutting-edge cars.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage '77

The original Aston Martin "brute in a suit," the 1977 V8 Vantage mixed British craftsmanship and luxury with uncompromising V8 power. It was designed to maximize the power output of the engine found in the Aston Martin V8, pushing horsepower figures up by 40% while maintaining the original car's mile-munching long-distance comfort. With up to 380 horsepower on offer, the car boasted a 0-60 mph time of 5.2 seconds and a top speed north of 170 mph.

It's often credited as the first British supercar, although its four seats and generous luggage space offered more everyday practicality than the term supercar might imply. This wasn't simply a track day toy or a technical showcase – despite being the world's fastest four-seater at the time of its release, this was very much still a plush drivers' car built with long road trips in mind.

Not all V8 Vantages were built equal, however. Due to restrictive emissions regulations, American-market examples were initially sold without the boost in power over the standard V8 coupe, although most have been retrofitted in the decades since to match their European counterparts. All the other Vantage upgrades, from the new suspension to the unique body kit, remained the same across all markets.

Jaguar E-Type

While the Aston Martin V8 Vantage may well have been Britain's first supercar, it certainly wasn't Britain's first grand touring icon. The country's carmakers had been experimenting with combining luxury and performance since the post-war days, with the Jaguar E-Type one of the most successful creations .

The car debuted at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show and attracted so much interest from customers and the media that the company's sole demonstration car was fully booked out. To accommodate the overwhelming demand, a Jaguar engineer drove a second test car from the marque's base in Coventry, England to the Swiss motor show overnight. In a testament to its grand touring pedigree, the car completed the 700-mile journey with time to spare, arriving at the show in time for test drives to commence the following morning.

Alongside its impressive performance -– Jaguar claimed a 150 mph top speed –- the E-Type's styling also set it apart from its peers. Enzo Ferrari famously called it "the most beautiful car in the world," and over the years, its flowing lines have remained just as striking. The icing on the cake for buyers at the time was that the E-Type was also significantly more affordable than many of its contemporaries, with a price that equates to around $50,000 in today's money.

Ferrari 365 GTB4 Daytona

The Ferrari "Daytona" took its nickname from the dominant 1-2-3 finish that the automaker achieved at the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona, but officially, it was only ever known as the 365 GTB4. It was developed in both road-going and race-spec variants, with the latter proving to be particularly dominant at Le Mans. The Daytona won its class at Le Mans three years consecutively between 1972 and 1974, putting on a particularly dominant performance in '72, when it took the first five places in its class.

Aside from its success on the track, the Daytona also proved to be an exceptional road car, offering both fierce performance and a comfortable, elegant cabin. Performance varied slightly depending on region, with American-market cars bound by stricter regulations and, therefore, slightly slower than Euro-spec cars.

Still, their timeless design and status as one of Ferrari's best cars from the era have kept prices consistently high for collectors in recent years. Most publicly sold examples fetch over half a million dollars, with the most pristine examples costing $800,000 or more.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe

Alongside the classics, there are a number of more modern grand tourers that also deserve a spot on this list. One such car is the current generation S-Class Coupe , whose name sums up its appeal — it combines the luxury and technology of the S-Class limousine with the looks and handling of a coupe.

The S-Class line is famous for its use of cutting-edge tech, and the S-Class Coupe didn't disappoint. The headline features all centered around ride comfort. For instance, there was Magic Body Control, which used a series of cameras to assess the road surface ahead and adapt the suspension to match, as well as a luxury lounge cabin with optional Nappa leather upholstery. Three variants were made available at launch, the most powerful of which was the 621 horsepower AMG S65. The top-spec car featured a 6.0L V12 engine, while all other variants packed a V8 under the hood.

Despite superseding the SL line as the flagship Mercedes grand tourer, the S-Class Coupe's production run was short-lived. Production was axed after 2021 as the brand slimmed down its lineup, leaving the current-generation SL its closest replacement.

Maserati Ghibli

The Ghibli nameplate is unusual among Maserati's back catalog as it has been revived twice over the years, and both of those revivals are very different from the original. Arguably, it's the original grand tourer that's still the greatest incarnation to bear the name, with its production run spanning from 1967 to 1972. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Ghibli was a traditional GT car in that it featured a 2+2 seating layout, a luxurious cabin, and enough luggage space to store weekend bags for a road trip.

The car's V8 engine was shared with other Maserati models, including the four-door Quattroporte sedan, and made either 330 or 335 horsepower depending on configuration. In its most potent Ghibli SS form, it could reportedly reach a top speed of 177 mph. Over 1,300 examples were built in total, with the spyder variant much rarer than the coupe.

Widely considered one of Giugiaro's greatest designs, the car's engine featured a dry sump to accommodate the sloping hood. Pop-up headlights also kept the hood line uninterrupted, giving the front end a sleek, flowing appearance.

Bentley Continental GT

Few modern grand tourers have shaped the history of an entire brand as much as the Bentley Continental. The modern Continental GT, unveiled in the early '00s, marked a turning point for the brand -– freshly revived under VW Group ownership, Bentley proved it could still make a world-class performance car without compromising on the sense of luxury on which it had built its reputation. The car was significantly faster than its predecessor, boasting a W12 engine and a more aerodynamic styling.

Its success, both critically and commercially, helped Bentley transform its image and its bottom line. The modern Continental GT still follows a similar formula to that of the relaunched 2003 car, which is a testament to the original's design. High running costs and traditional British (read: questionable) reliability have helped keep used values low, although given the car's importance to Bentley as a brand, it may well become more collectible in the future.

Aston Martin DB5

One of the best-known grand tourers thanks to its iconic role in the classic James Bond film "Goldfinger," the Aston Martin DB5 is both very rare and very valuable today. It featured a 4.0L straight-six engine making 282 horsepower, enough to propel the car to an officially quoted top speed of 150 mph. Its high-performance engine was complemented by a highly sophisticated cabin, with journalists from the era comparing its high-tech dashboard to that of an aircraft. However, the standard car paled in comparison to the technology available in James Bond's highly modified example.

Although none of the original 900 or so customer DB5s could be optioned with Bond gadgets, a limited continuation run launched in 2020 gave buyers a chance to get behind the wheel of their own movie-grade car. Featuring extras like bulletproof glass, replica machine guns, and built-in battering rams, each DB5 Goldfinger Continuation took 4,500 hours to construct. A run of just 25 examples were built, all of which were quickly snapped up.

Even without its big-screen gadgets, the DB5 remains an extremely desirable collector's car, as well as one of the most capable grand tourers of its era. Unfortunately, its fame now means that few examples will still be used as originally intended — for long road trips and high-speed jaunts across the country. Rather, they'll likely be confined to air-conditioned garages as museum pieces, all while their value continues to increase.

Toyota 2000GT

A landmark car in Japanese automotive history, the Toyota 2000GT was the first car to prove that the country's automakers could build a true performance vehicle. It was designed as a response to Japan's burgeoning racing scene, with the goal of making a car just as capable on the road as it was on the track. With Toyota lacking the production facilities to build such a bespoke car, Yamaha was contracted to build both the prototype and production units.

The car was first unveiled in 1965 but was only launched for public sale in 1967. It proved to be a relatively slow seller –- wealthy domestic buyers were still unsure about the competitiveness of a Japanese grand tourer, and there was virtually no interest in the car outside its home market. In total, a reported 337 road cars were built, plus a handful for racing use. Each car was powered by a 2.0L straight-six engine making 150 horsepower, enough for a top speed of 136 mph.

While they never saw sales success at the time, their iconic status has made them highly sought-after collectors' cars today. Examples don't often appear for public sale, but when they do, they tend to fetch anywhere between $500,000 and $1,000,000.

Rolls-Royce Wraith

While previous Rolls-Royces had remained firmly in luxury car territory, the Wraith took a new direction and focused on driver enjoyment as much as pure luxury. As such, it's considered to be the first modern-era Rolls-Royce grand tourer.

While traditionally, Rolls-Royce was never keen on showing off performance figures for its cars, once even famously describing the output of its Silver Shadow as "adequate," the press release for the Wraith was a different matter. Its 624 horsepower engine and 4.4 second 0-60 mph time were among the first details disclosed about the car, alongside the typical description of its luxurious cabin.

When driving the Wraith , we were struck by how quiet and refined it remained even through more spirited driving. It's no doubt one of the most tranquil ways to embark on a cross-country jaunt should the situation call for it. A unique kind of grand tourer, then, and one that still errs closer to the luxury than the performance side of the segment. Make no mistake, however — this is still a seriously rapid car, one that we found frighteningly easy to hit license-losing speeds in as we cruised down the highway.

Facel Vega HK500

While the longevity of brands like Ferrari, Jaguar, and Aston Martin has ensured their greatest grand tourers remain in the limelight, not every vintage icon has been so lucky. The Facel Vega HK500 was among the most desirable cars of its day, with a laundry list of celebrity owners stretching from Pablo Picasso to Sir Stirling Moss. However, in the decades since the Facel brand folded, it's remained under the radar compared to many of its contemporaries.

It's thought that roughly 490 examples of the car were built over its production run, although it's unknown how many of those survive to the present day. The HK500 was an upgraded version of the Vega FVS, boasting a more powerful, Chrysler-sourced V8 engine. It produced a reported 360 horsepower and could reach a top speed in excess of 140 mph.

The upgraded car was introduced in 1959 but wasn't in production for long. By 1964, the Facel brand had shuttered altogether, marking an unceremonious end for one of the greatest French grand tourers ever made.

Ferrari 250 GTO

Described by Ferrari as "the ultimate expression of the Ferrari 250 GT car," the 250 GTO is also among the most valuable Ferrari cars ever produced. Part of that is down to its rarity, as just 36 examples were made. The car was originally developed by Giotto Bizzarrini as a rival to the Jaguar E-Type, but its development was interrupted by the infamous Ferrari revolution of 1961.

Following a heated disagreement with Enzo Ferrari, Bizzarrini was fired, along with several other key staff members. That left designer Sergio Scaglietti, another legendary name in Ferrari's history, to polish the design so it was ready for road car production to begin. The car was designed to be suited for both high-performance road driving and circuit competition, and many of the surviving 250 GTOs can claim some degree of racing pedigree.

While it's no longer the outright most expensive car in the world, the best examples of the 250 GTO continue to fetch eye-watering sums at auction. In 2022, a previously single-family-owned example sold for an astonishing $38.1 million .

Koenigsegg Gemera

The Koenigsegg Gemera is not like other grand tourers. It can still seat four and has room for a modest amount of luggage, and it even comes with an optional V8 engine. However, that V8, along with ample assistance from the car's electric motors, makes a combined 2,300 horsepower. For context, that's more than twice as much as the original Bugatti Veyron. Yet, the Koenigsegg can still transport a small family.

The Gemera is simulteneously the most sensible and the most outlandish Koenigsegg made to date, and it sports a suitably outlandish asking price. It's been reported that the V8 Gemera will cost at least $2.1 million, representing a $400,000 premium over the standard 1,400 horsepower variant. Its performance stats make it difficult to define: as a four-seater, two-door hybrid, it follows the formula for which many GTs of the future will undoubtedly follow, yet with its ridiculous four-figure power output, it's also one of the most groundbreaking — not to mention exclusive — hypercars ever built.

Whether it will be just as comfortable and engaging to drive as the best classic grand tourers remains to be seen for now, but one thing is for certain — for crossing continents in a hurry, nothing short of an airplane is better suited for the job.

10. 2023 Ford Bronco Sport

The might not be as big and burly as its brother, the Bronco, but it still comes with standard all-wheel drive, gets good crash test scores, and offers considerable presence for a compact SUV. For 2023, there’s a new Heritage model with plaid cloth upholstery, or a Heritage Limited with leather seating surfaces. But no matter which Bronco Sport you pick, you’ll get seating for five, though second-row legroom isn’t especially generous at 36.9 inches. Cargo room is good, however, at up to 32.5 cubic feet.

All Bronco Sport models get an 8-inch center display with Sync 3. Upgrades include navigation, Bang & Olufsen premium audio, a special bundle for traveling with your dog and, of course, and a range of more off-road and adventure-oriented options. 10 Best Cars for Road-Tripping on a Budget

Over the river spring line scaled jpg

By Jane Ulitskaya

Memorial Day kickstarts the summer travel season, and despite record-high gas prices , drivers aren’t willing to sacrifice their annual road trips. According to a Cars.com survey , 82% of Americans traveling over the holiday are planning to drive. But rising fuel prices aren’t the only hurdle for shoppers in the market for a vehicle to accommodate their summer travel plans — higher average prices at the dealership can be just as problematic.

Related: What’s the Best New-Car Deal for May 2022?

The median price of a new vehicle among Cars.com dealers was $39,083 in April, up from $36,370 one year prior. At the same time, the typical manufacturer incentives offered over Memorial Day weekend are significantly scaled back due to inventory constraints. According to a J.D. Power sales report , incentives on new cars shrunk to $1,034 in April — down 66% from April 2021.

Despite these challenges, shoppers looking for an affordable road-trip vehicle that minimizes sticker shock at the pump still have options. We compiled the most affordable and fuel-efficient or fuel-free model-year 2022 cars, SUVs, trucks and electric vehicles for summer adventures (and beyond). To make our list, each vehicle’s starting price is in the top 10 most affordable category for its class. Also, gas-powered options get an EPA-rated combined rating of 30 mpg or more and EVs must get at least 200 miles of EPA-estimated range.

Sedans and hatchbacks make excellent road-trip vehicles for small families and light packers. They are also among the most affordable options on the market and offer generous efficiency even without a hybrid or electric powertrain.

Chevrolet Spark

chevrolet spark 2020 oem jpg

Topping the list of budget-friendly road-trip vehicles is the most affordable car on the market. Shoppers interested in the Spark need to act fast, however, since GM plans to end the hatchback’s production in August, according to Automotive News . While it may not be long for this world, traveling long distances in the Spark comes with one big perk: a 33 mpg combined EPA-rating . A word of caution, however. Although the Spark can carry up to four occupants, it’ll be a tight fit for those in the backseat. The 2022 Spark LS with an optional continuously variable automatic transmission starts at $15,695 (all prices include destination charge).

Mitsubishi Mirage

The 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage carries a small price premium over the Spark, but it also brings improved fuel efficiency: With an available CVT, the Mirage offers an EPA-rated 39 mpg combined. The Mirage also adds one additional seat in the rear to fit a total of five occupants. Although it can handle a trip to the lake or a staycation around town, the Mirage’s 78-horsepower, 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine paired with the CVT isn’t made for the track — but its handling offers a relatively fun driving experience. The ES hatchback starts at $16,990 and the G4 sedan at $17,990.

If your summer road-trip goals boil down to avoiding jarring road noise and anxiety at the pump, the 2022 Kia Rio delivers on both. Like the Mirage, the Rio seats five and comes in hatchback or sedan variants. The 120-hp, 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with a CVT gets an EPA-rated 36 mpg combined. Quiet on the highway and with stable handling, the base LX trim comes with an affordable starting price of $17,275. An added bonus is that the Rio gets wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration.

SUVs may come with notably higher starting prices than their car counterparts, but they also carry the added benefits of flexible cargo space and a higher ride height for long summer drives. Choosing from the list of the most affordable SUVs with the highest mpg may check all the boxes in the “practical” category of your shopping list.

Hyundai Kona

hyundai kona 2022 05 blue exterior rear angle suv scaled jpg

For being the most affordable SUV on the market, the Hyundai Kona isn’t short on road-trip-friendly features that include standard automatic emergency braking, hands-on lane centering, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with wireless connectivity on the base model’s 8-inch touchscreen. In our review of the 2022 model, we also found it engaging to drive — a rarity for the subcompact SUV class. Plus, the Kona’s 147-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder and front-wheel drive offer an EPA-rated 32 mpg combined, making it a solid choice for weekend getaways. The gas-powered Kona SE starts at $22,395, while an electric variant is sold in select states with a $35,245 starting price.

Chevrolet Trailblazer

The subcompact Trailblazer was introduced in 2021 and offers a surprisingly fun driving experience despite modest power from the base 137-hp, 1.2-liter three-cylinder. It also brings standard wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity and active-safety features like automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning with steering assist. To make it more adventure-friendly, a trailering package and roof rack crossbars are available factory accessories. The Trailblazer is competitive both in fuel economy and price: It gets an EPA-rated 30 mpg combined with standard FWD and starts at $22,795 for the base LS trim.

One of the HR-V’s best features when it comes to road trips is its versatile and roomy interior: The second row offers more space than most subcompact SUVs, and the multiposition second-row Magic Seat can fold flat to offer competitive cargo space for standard luggage or fold up to accommodate taller items. A 141-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder provides power and gets an EPA-rated 30 mpg combined. The base HR-V starts at $23,115; unlike some of its competitors, however, the base model does not offer standard safety features like automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning or Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

Ford Maverick

All-new for 2022, the Ford Maverick is the only pickup truck to make the list of efficient road-trip vehicles with a combined rating of 30 mpg or more.

The base Ford Maverick’s standard gas-electric hybrid powertrain makes 191 hp and is paired with a CVT for an EPA-rated 37 mpg combined. Even though it doesn’t match the full-size F-150’s towing or payload capacity, the compact pickup can hold its own on the road thanks to a sizable cargo bed and towing capacity of up to 4,000 pounds with the optional turbocharged 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder. The Maverick has a $21,490 starting price and earned both our Best of the Year 2022 and Best Pickup Truck of 2022 awards.

Electric Vehicles

If avoiding gas stations entirely is your ideal plan, there are a handful of affordable EVs that can accommodate you. But while filling up at a gas station demands only a quick detour off the highway, road trips in a battery-powered vehicle involve more preparation. It’s important to consider the vehicle’s maximum range — most EVs with the longest range are luxury models that don’t overlap with the most affordable options.

This means mapping out public charging stations along the route will be required for longer trips. The top battery-powered vehicles for road trips offer an EPA-estimated range of 200 miles or more and are offered in all 50 states. Additionally, the Nissan Leaf and Kia Niro EV are still eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit .

Nissan Leaf

The most affordable EV currently available doesn’t just eliminate the concern of rising gas prices, it also bucks the trend of rising vehicle prices. In fact, the 2022 Leaf sees a significant price cut and additional features : the ProPilot Assist safety suite, a 360-degree camera system and a portable Level 2 charging cable. Although the standard Leaf’s 40-kilowatt-hour battery and 147-hp electric motor offer just 149 miles of range per EPA-estimates , the extended-range Leaf Plus brings a more road-trip-worthy 226 miles of range from a 62-kWh battery and 214-hp motor. The standard range Nissan Leaf starts at $28,425, the Leaf Plus at $33,425.

Chevrolet Bolt EV, Bolt EUV

Like the Leaf, the Bolt EV hatchback also sees a price cut for 2022; its starting price is nearly $5,000 less compared to the outgoing model. The redesigned 2022 Bolt EV gets a new interior, more standard safety tech and an all-new and larger Bolt EUV SUV sibling. Both Bolts are powered by a 65-kWh battery and 200-hp single electric motor, but the hatch gets a range advantage with an EPA-estimated 259 miles, compared to the EUV’s 247-mile range. Despite a rocky start for the 2022s with multiple recalls and stop-sale orders, GM has offered a fix and resumed production . The 2022 Bolt EV starts at $32,495 and the 2022 Bolt EUV at $34,495.

Kia Niro EV

Sold alongside its hybrid and plug-in hybrid counterparts, the Niro EV also shares a powertrain with the related Hyundai Kona Electric; unlike the Kona Electric, however, the Niro EV is available in all 50 states. The Niro also carries advantages over the Kona that include a larger backseat and longer range (the Niro gets an EPA-estimated 239 miles). Although the Niro family sees a redesign for 2023 , the outgoing model still has a lot to offer shoppers, including a competitive starting price of $41,205.

Summer Road-Trip Maintenance and Tips

Whether you’re planning to get a new vehicle or take your trusty old one on a summer road trip, it’s a good idea to make sure the car is ready for the trip. AAA recommends checking the tires and tire pressure ; testing the brakes and the battery; topping off oil and other fluids; checking belts and hoses; checking the air conditioning; and stocking the vehicle with an emergency supply kit .

The EV ownership experience differs from a gas-powered car, especially when planning a road trip. You’ll need to account for the vehicle’s range and map out charging stations along the route if the range is insufficient. Many EVs come with a smartphone app to check the vehicle’s mileage range and battery charge and help you find charging stations on the go; for example, Chevy offers EV Access through its OnStar Connected services for the Bolt EV and EUV, and a similar app is offered for the Nissan Leaf through NissanConnect EV Services .

A road trip is a fantastic way to spend a vacation. Out on the open road, you can take time to appreciate and relish the journey, not just the destination. Has Your Car's Value Changed?

Used car values are constantly changing. Edmunds lets you track your vehicle's value over time so you can decide when to sell or trade in.

1. 2016 Volkswagen Golf

If you're looking to hit the highway with a couple of friends and explore a new city or two, a compact hatchback is a smart pick. Compacts are inherently maneuverable and if you can find one with good outward visibility, generous interior space and great fuel economy, you're good to go. You won't find a better embodiment of these qualities than the 2016 Volkswagen Golf.

The Golf offers real space for four adults, or five in a pinch, with a handy 22.8 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the rear seatbacks and an almost SUV-like 52.7 cubic feet with those seatbacks folded down. The large windows afford great sightlines in every direction, while the standard 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces enough power to slingshot you around an on-ramp without much effort. And yet, it gets 29 mpg combined in EPA testing (25 city/36 highway). This is sensible German engineering at its best.

2. 2016 Toyota Prius

If city touring is in your road-trip plans and you need more space than a compact vehicle can offer, check out the midsize 2016 Toyota Prius. It's a top pound-for-pound contender in passenger space and road comfort, not to mention its unbeatable fuel economy.

Go all-in with the Prius Eco model and you'll get ultra-low rolling-resistance tires along with a slight weight reduction, resulting in 56 mpg combined (58 city/53 highway). That extends fueling intervals to a bladder-challenging range somewhere north of 600 miles. Efficiency aside, this Prius is also more comfortable and rewarding to drive than any generation before it. And its midsize dimensions mean there's plenty of space for people and cargo.

3. 2016 Hyundai Genesis

Maybe you're someone who thinks a road trip — even one that takes weeks and a couple hundred miles a day — should not be a test of endurance. If so, a cushy luxury sedan like the 2016 Hyundai Genesis might suit you.

A base price of $39,700 might sound like it's stretching the definition of "affordable," but that's where this Hyundai's exceptional value comes into play. For the money, the Genesis simply can't be matched for feature content or interior quality, and it comes with industry-leading warranty coverage. The standard, smooth-revving 3.8-liter V6 is the smart choice (the optional V8 plays in a different league), and you can specify rear- or all-wheel drive.

4. 2016 Mazda CX-5

Maybe you're tired of the city because you have to live in one for 350 days a year. In that case, the point of a road trip is to get as far away from cities — or even roads themselves — as possible. We're with you.

The 2016 Mazda CX-5 is a winner here. On the pavement, it's downright sporty for a crossover, with impressive fuel economy to boot. But it can also be equipped with a capable all-wheel drive system for mild off-road exploration. While rock-crawling jaunts may be off the table, the versatile CX-5 should provide more overall satisfaction than a single-purpose off-road vehicle.

5. 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata

For the driver whose trip revolves around roads rather than destinations, a sublime connection between car and driver moves to the top of the priority list. Unfortunately, this kind of connection often comes with a monthly payment that looks more like a mortgage. But the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata is a notable exception.

The Miata provides a lightweight body, a feisty four-cylinder engine, a taut suspension and communicative steering, delivering endless driving fun in a package that's barely big enough to fit two. The cabin may be too cozy for certain body types, and the trunk is limited to 4.6 cubic feet of space, so plan on packing light. But spend just five minutes behind the wheel of the MX-5 and you'll completely understand the appeal.

6. 2017 Ford Mustang Convertible

Summer brings plenty of opportunities to soak up some rays. And if you live in a place that doesn't see sunshine on a regular basis, you'll definitely want to take full advantage of these months.

It's true that the Miata, the No. 5 pick, is a seriously good convertible, but it has real space constraints. So if your passenger and cargo needs are greater, the 2017 Ford Mustang Convertible is another great drop-top option. The Mustang may not be as spry as the Miata, but with double the seats, significantly more trunk capacity and nearly double the horsepower from even the base V6 engine, it compensates nicely in other areas. If you need more power, a turbo four-cylinder and V8 are also available. In any configuration, this is iconic American motoring.

7. 2016 Honda Odyssey

This list would not be complete without today's quintessential road trip vehicle: the minivan. For years, the minivan has provided larger families with a maximally efficient means of traveling together, supplanting the thirsty and unwieldly station wagons.

As in other vehicle segments, there are minivans that stand out from the crowd. Offering seating for up to eight, the 2016 Honda Odyssey is one of our favorites, scoring top marks in interior space and comfort, everyday drivability and even composure around corners. Some high-end features available on the Odyssey include a 12-speaker surround-sound audio system and a 16.2-inch widescreen rear entertainment screen with HDMI connectivity, as well as the industry's first on-board vacuum system. Wrangling the kids could still be a challenge, but convincing them to climb aboard a rolling movie theatre will take far less effort.

8. 2017 Chevrolet Traverse

So you need to haul a lot of people and cargo to faraway places, but you refuse to join the Minivan Alliance. No problem. The 2016 Chevrolet Traverse is a comfortable and unusually spacious three-row SUV that accommodates up to eight passengers and starts at around $30,000.

The Traverse can tow up to 5,200 pounds when properly equipped, which is impressive for a crossover. It also comes with a 288-horsepower V6 engine that can be paired with all-wheel drive. Even with all three seating rows in use, there's still a generous 24.4 cubic feet of cargo space. Folding the second- and third-row seats opens up a whopping 116.3 cubic feet, topping this segment by a wide margin. An all-new Traverse is waiting in the wings and will be substantially smaller, so if you like the road-trip possibilities opened up by that cavernous cabin, grab a current-generation Traverse while you still can.

9. 2016 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel

If the Chevy Traverse's 5,200-pound towing capacity seems puny to you, perhaps the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel's 9,050-lb capacity is more like it. If your road trip involves pulling a trailer, a boat or even a camper, you'll want a truck with enough muscle to make quick work of any route.

The Ram 1500's EcoDiesel V6 provides outstanding fuel economy (20 mpg city/28 highway) along with a healthy 420 pound-feet of torque. The four-door crew cab can seat up to six and is surprisingly pleasant on long hauls thanks to its airy cabin, supportive seats and supple coil-spring rear suspension. Note that the EcoDiesel carries about a $5,000 premium, which nudges even the cheapest diesel-powered crew cab past our price cutoff. But this engine is certainly worth the extra money if towing and fuel economy (or simply extended driving range) are top priorities.

10. 2017 Honda Ridgeline

If you like the utility of a truck but prefer the refined driving character of a car, the 2017 Honda Ridgeline could be the road-trip champion you've been waiting for. Based on the Honda Pilot SUV, the Ridgeline is packed full of versatile features catering to an active lifestyle, so it's a great choice for trips with outdoorsy themes.

The bed of the Ridgeline is where most of the magic happens. A dual-hinged tailgate folds down or swings open from the side to reveal lockable underfloor storage. You can toss your gear in there, or else throw in some drinks and ice to convert it into a fully stocked cooler (the melted ice drains out via a removable plug at the bottom). Also available on top-line models is a 540-watt sound system, paired with the industry's first truck-bed audio system. It makes every stop on your itinerary a party waiting to happen.

Lucid Motors

Lucid’s longest-range air grand touring gets faster charging, 516 miles range at a lower price.

Avatar for Peter Johnson

New details on the longest-range electric car in the US, the Lucid Air Grand Touring, have been revealed. Lucid’s new 2024 Air Grand Touring gains faster charging, a heat pump, and 516 miles range (in more conditions). And you get all that for a 12% discount compared to last year’s model.

Lucid Air Grand Touring gets upgraded, still 516-mi range

The longest-range EV in the US is getting even better. Lucid upgraded the 2024 Air Grand Touring for better efficiency and faster charging.

Lucid’s new GT model is now equipped with the high-performance Air Sapphires’ heat pump. This allows the 2024 Grand Touring to deliver “outstanding range even in extremely cold conditions.”

The proprietary motor design, battery cell chemistry, and thermal features have been enhanced to reduce wasted energy as heat even during “sustained spirited” driving.

Lucid says the 2024 GT model features about 15% to 30% faster DC charging speeds to quickly get you back on the road. The 2024MY gains improved automatic preconditioning as you travel to the charging station, enabling faster charging once you plug it in.

The 2024 Air Grand Touring keeps its 516-mile EPA-estimated range, the longest of any EV in the US.

Lucid-Air-Grand-Touring-Range

However, with a borrowed heat pump from the Sapphire, Lucid says the Grand Touring can deliver outstanding range in a broader range of real-world conditions.

“The Air Grand Touring is our longest-range car – in fact the longest-range EV available today – and is now further optimized with a multitude of powertrain updates, including the Air Sapphire heat pump,” CEO Peter Rawlinson explained.

Lucid-Air-Grand-Touring

The 2024 Lucid Air Grand Touring starts at $109,900. That’s a 12.5% price cut from the $125,600 starting price in January.

Top comment by HendersonTRKing

Looks like a Tesla Model S killer to me. And I'm speaking as someone who's been actively looking to replace his 2020 fully loaded (ludicrous, FSD, free supercharging for life) Model S. IDK much about Lucid's track record, reliability or, frankly, prospects for remaining in business. When I bought my Model S in 2020, the 9 year old design was still crisp and many of the manufacturing issues had been resolved (although the tech was still disturbingly buggy). And Elon was still closer to Tony Stark than the Orange Menace. While the design is now getting stale, it's still a gorgeous car and outperforms just about anything else on the road. But this Lucid definitely turns my head.

Lucid’s 2024 Air lineup includes:

Lucid slashed prices on 2024 Air models by up to $7,500 in February. The EV maker is already seeing the results, with a record first-quarter delivery total.

The EV maker handed over 1,967 Air models in Q1, topping its previous quarterly delivery record of 1,932 in Q4 2022.

Lucid expects to build 9,000 electric cars this year, with 2,391 made in the first three months of the year.

WARNING: ADRENALINE AHEAD.

The Dream Car Tour is 3+ hours of pure, unadulterated awesome: A unique and exciting driving adventure that puts you behind the wheel of six different exotic sports cars for an adrenaline-filled drive through some of the most fun roads in the country.

You'll experience the thrill and excitement of the world's greatest cars -- a hand-picked selection of Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins, Bentleys and more -- as you pilot each magnificent vehicle along the highways, byways and mountain roads they were designed to live on.

At the end of the day, you'll leave exhilarated (and maybe a bit giddy) with a certificate of completion, photos to remember your experience and, of course, the world's biggest smile. And the whole shebang is available for just $1,195 .

Dream-car-tour-intro

First, the basics.

You've got to walk before you can run. You'll start your day with a thorough overview of each vehicle. Our professional instructors will take you through the rules of the road and the safety (and performance) features of each car. You'll want to know how to shift, adjust the mirrors, and, of course, which side the seatbelt buckle is on.

Line 'em up.

Next, it's off to our staging area. You'll get settled in your first vehicle of the day - and the anticipation will start to boil over. We'll run some radio checks (we have two-way radios in each car so you'll never be out of touch) and make sure everyone is buckled in for launch.

Dream-car-tour-lineup

And they're off!

Now comes the fun part. You'll pilot each vehicle for 15 heart-stopping miles. With the wind in your hair and the glorious sound of engine in your ears, you'll quickly understand why these are the greatest machines ever built.

Switch 'em up.

After each leg, the group will pull over at a designated checkpoint and you'll rotate cars with your fellow drivers. Of course that's just an excuse to let you catch your breath (and maybe mug for the camera a bit).

Dream-car-tour-switch-em-up

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Think that was fun? Well you're only 1/6 of the way there. You'll drive each car in sequence, getting a chance to compare and contrast the performance and handling characteristics. And you'll learn the answer to that ever-elusive question - are you a Ferrari guy? A Lamborghini girl? Or maybe you're James Bond in training.

Smiles ahead.

Whether you're younger, older, male, female, married, single, or none of the above, The Dream Car Tour is an experience you'll want to have under your belt. We've had 1000s participate and everyone leaves with a grin.

-- Stephen R.

"THANK YOU AND WOW! That experience was everything I had hoped it could be. I would do this again in a heartbeat and HIGHLY recommend to anyone who likes cars to do this. Watch the Official Video

Frequently asked questions, give me the basics. what is the dream car tour.

The Dream Car Tour is an exotic car driving experience. We gather six awesome exotics cars and a group of drivers and take everyone on a 3+ hour, 100+ mile real-world driving adventure. Every ~15 miles the group pulls over and everyone switches cars, so you'll have a chance to sample a variety of amazing cars. Think of it as a tasting menu of supercars.

When and where is the Dream Car Tour held?

You can participate in a Dream Car Tour on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of select weeks at various locations around the nation.

Is a staff member in the car with me while I drive?

Not usually. For most of our vehicles, we put you behind the wheel and your passenger rides along with you. For a few select vehicles with extremely limited visibility (such as the Lamborghini Murcielago), a GDC staff member will ride with you to assist with any tight turns and provide a second set of eyes.

Can I bring a friend to ride along with me? Can I bring my whole family?

Absolutely! In fact, passengers can ride along with you free of charge, so bring whoever you'd like. But please do limit yourself to one guest. Most of the cars are two-seaters, so there simply isn't any place for others to ride. And please, make sure all passengers can comfortably fit in the passenger's seat and be buckled in - we do not permit car seats on the Tour.

Can my friend follow along in his/her own car?

We don't suggest this. We drive on public roads so obviously we can't prevent anyone from trying to tag along, however because of the nature of the event (lots of turns and road changes) and because we have radios and your friend does not, it's very difficult for people to follow along. And unfortunately we cannot wait for friends who get stuck at red lights or miss an exit.

Do I have to follow the group? Can I drive my own route?

The Dream Car Tour is a guided Tour - we drive together as a group and we bring two support vehicles along for the ride: a lead car (to set the pace) and a tail car (to make sure nobody falls behind). You can drive in any order you want provided you don't pass the lead car and don't fall behind the tail car. Often, there will be up to a mile between the lead and tail cars, so there's plenty of freedom on the road. We do require that you remain with the group, and we do not permit drivers to go explore by themselves.

How many cars will I get to drive?

There are six vehicles on the Dream Car Tour. You'll get a chance to drive all six of them throughout the 3+ hour experience.

How long does the Tour last?

The Tour generally lasts between 3 - 4 hours. Morning Tours are usually back by 1pm and afternoon Tours by 7pm barring any unforeseen delays, which, despite our best efforts, do happen occasionally (i.e. weather, mechanical issues, lost drivers, etc.)

How many other drivers will there be on the Tour?

Tours can accomodate a minimum of 6 and maximum of 8 drivers (actually, a bit more, but we'll explain that in the next question.) But wait - if there are 6 cars and 8 drivers, how does that work? Good question! Every participant will always have a chance to drive all six cars. We sometimes incorporate "rest" legs into the event -- which means at any time six folks will be driving and up to two folks will be taking a break and riding as passengers. We've found that three hours of intense driving all in one shot can be pretty exhausting, so by adding in rest legs, you get a chance to catch your breath for a few minutes.

How does the "Dual Driver" option work?

We offer an innovative way to share the Dream Car Tour experience with a friend called our "Dual Driver" option. Each of you pays a slightly lower per-person cost, and you'll always be together in all vehicles. Each time you switch vehicles, the two of you can change who does the driving and who sits shotgun. This lets you split the driving 3/3 (or 4/2, 5/1, etc.) so you both get to experience these amazing cars firsthand.

How fast do I get to drive?

Because the Dream Car Tour takes place on public highways and local roads, we drive as you would every day on the street - safely with the flow of traffic. On larger highways, that flow can be a nice brisk pace, while on twisty back roads, we'll take a pace that makes sure you enjoy the back-and-forth turns without slipping off an embankment.

Our goal is to give you the true "exotic car owner" experience - we want you to know what it's like to drive these cars as if they were your own. And don't worry - everyone who comes on the Tour asks this question and always has a great time. We're not out to tease you with great cars that only go 40mph.

Safety is our number one priority on the Dream Car Tour and we emphasize it constantly. Any participants found to be driving in a reckless or unsafe manner at any point during the Tour will lose driving privileges.

What if I get lost or make a wrong turn?

Every vehicle on the Dream Car Tour is equipped with a two-way radio system that's capable of transmitting a signal miles away, so you will always be in contact with the support vehicles and the other drivers on the Tour. Instructions are given over the radio by the lead car before each turn and each exit, so you should have no problems staying with the group. But every once in a while you might make a wrong turn (it happens), and if so we'll make sure to guide you back to the group over the radio.

What happens if I get pulled over? Am I responsible for tickets?

Our goal is to give you the "exotic car owner" experience - unfortunately part of that experience is the reality that exotic cars draw a lot of attention, both wanted and unwanted. In the rare case that you are pulled over during the Tour, you will be responsible for any tickets received.

I don't care about any of the cars other than the . Can you guarantee I get to drive it?

The purpose of the Dream Car Tour is to give you an adrenaline-filled "sampler menu" of exotic cars - you get to drive six different vehicles from the world's best and most exciting manufacturers. Because of the nature of these high-performance vehicles, maintenance issues do arise and occasionally we must make vehicle substitutions. We therefore cannot guarantee any specific car will be a part of a given Tour.

What do you do if it rains?

Dream Car Tours run rain or shine. We've been running events for over 3 years and our experience has shown us that even in the rain, the Tours are a tremendous amount of fun - in fact, some of the best testimonials we've received have been from participants that drove in the rain.

Do I have to know how to drive stick?

No. All of the vehicles on the Dream Car Tour are either fully automatic or semi-automatic (F1-style 'paddle shifters').

How do I drive a 'paddle shift' transmission? Is it hard? Will you teach me?

F1-style paddle shift transmissions are the latest innovation in high performance vehicles. Adopted from the transmission of the world's fastest professional race cars, it blends the performance and efficiency of a manual transmission with the ease and speed of an automatic.

It takes about 10 minutes for a normal driver to get accustomed to driving a paddle-shift vehicle. We provide full instruction before we depart, and in no time you'll be driving and shifting like a pro!

What is the age requirement to drive? Are there other requirements?

All drivers must be 21 years of age or older and have a valid driver's license and personal auto insurance. If you do not have personal auto insurance, several options are available to you - contact the Gotham Dream Cars office for details.

Does my own insurance cover me in the Dream Car Tour? I only drive a Toyota Camry!

Believe it or not, the answer is yes. In all 50 states, if you carry full-coverage insurance (that means Liability, Comp, and Collision) your insurance will automatically carry over and cover you when you rent a car from us - regardless of what you drive or what you rent. And it's for the same reason that if you're driving down the highway in your Camry and you happen to knock a Ferrari off the road, your insurance will cover the damage.

What does the Dream Car Tour cost again?

$1195 (+ tax) gets you behind the wheel of six of the most amazing cars you'll ever drive for three+ hours of fun. It's by far the best "bang for the buck" we offer here at Gotham Dream Cars.

Anything else I should know?

Short Track Weekly: Back to the CARS Tour’s Orange County Roots

The zMAX CARS Tour returns to familiar territory this Saturday, April 20, as the series heads to Orange County Speedway (OCS) for the Orange Blossom 250. However, those who are new to the series may be unfamiliar with Orange County and its prominence in the series history.

That’s because OCS hasn’t hosted a CARS Tour race since April 25, 2021 – essentially three years ago. This Saturday’s event marks the CARS Tour’s 12th visit to Orange County, second only to Hickory Motor Speedway. But a lot has changed in the series since Josh Berry led 154 of 200 laps en route to a $30,000 victory in the 2021 Old North State Nationals.

𝗢𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗹𝗮𝗱 𝘄𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸?😉 👥 Gates // 3:00pm ⏰ LMSC Qualifying // 4:00pm ⏰ PLM Qualifying // 4:30pm 🎉 Fan Fest // 5:15-6:00pm 🍊 Green Flag // 7:00pm 🎟️ https://t.co/I2vBfiEF8x pic.twitter.com/ZtUR9YV0Dn — CARS Tour (@CARSTour) April 16, 2024

While it may seem somewhat cliché, the entire landscape of the series has changed in just three short years. So let’s take a look at some of the biggest changes during Orange County’s CARS Tour hiatus.

Starting off with the biggest and most obvious, the series was once owned by Jack McNelly , who founded it back in the fall of 2014. McNelly organized the tour’s first season back in 2015 as a continuation of the former Pro Cup Series. Series ownership changed ahead of the 2023 season, when current owners Kevin Harvick , Justin Marks , Jeff Burton and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (more on him in a sec) bought the series.

As one would expect, with new ownership comes new sponsorship. Ahead of the 2024 season, the CARS Tour split with longtime sponsor Solid Rock Carriers to kick off a new era with zMAX. The new sponsorship in 2024 with zMAX means a partnership with zMAX subsidiary owners Speedway Motors, LLC, and leader Marcus Smith .

The partnership with zMAX means a healthy relationship with North Wilkesboro Speedway. The track now has two dates on the CARS Tour schedule including the championship finale. If you had told someone back in 2021 that North Wilkesboro would sell out a CARS Tour race in 2022, host a 37-car field in 2023 and host two events in 2024, they might’ve called you insane.

With the help of the aforementioned Earnhardt, Smith, and many others, the track came roaring back to life in August 2022. The CARS Tour capped off the month-long “Race Track Revival” series that saw Earnhardt return to the famed Sun Drop No. 3.

North Wilkesboro isn’t the only change on the schedule since 2021. Franklin County Speedway, Greenville-Pickens Speedway and Motor Mile Speedway have all fallen off the Tour, with Greenville-Pickens and Motor Mile currently sitting dormant in 2024.

Meanwhile, Caraway Speedway has since become a staple on the tour, making its debut in May 2021, along with 2022 newcomer New River All-American Speedway.

As for the drivers, the Tour now has a solid mix of the old guard and up-and-coming stars. Bobby McCarty picked up his third tour championship in 2021, while regulars Brandon Pierce , Chad McCumbee , Mini Tyrrell and Deac McCaskill all remain with the series. In fact, McCaskill is set to make 100th series start this Saturday, making him the only driver to reach such a feat.

On the flip side, the series has seen the emergence of new stars, most notably Carson Kvapil . The son of Craftsman Truck Series champion Travis Kvapil won the now-defunct Super Late Model championship in 2021, before joining JR Motorsports’ Late Model Stock program in 2022. Since then, Kvapil has won 10 races and the past two championships on the Tour.

Speaking of Super Late Model Series, the CARS Tour canned the tour ahead of the 2022 season, replacing it with the new Pro Late Model Series that now showcases the sport’s rising stars.

While a lot has changed in the CARS Tour world in the past three years, the favorites for this Saturday remain relatively the same.

March’s Orange Krush 200 event at the track served as a preview for what was to come. To the surprise of few, McCarty and McCaskill were right up front. McCarty previously won the Orange County CARS Tour event in 2019, while McCaskill scored victories in 2017 and 2018.

For a true short track lover, it’s hard not to love Orange County Speedway – and those unfamiliar with the track are certainly in for a treat. A worn out surface with high-banked, multi-groove racing nestled in the North Carolina countryside, OCS truly is a grassroots racing utopia.

The CARS Tour heads back to its roots this weekend. Hopefully Orange County is here to stay.

One Day Los Angeles Self-Driving Tour

TripSavvy / Kayte Deioma

What should you do in LA if you only have 1 day to spend? This one-day driving tour will give you a glimpse of the top LA sights from Hollywood to Venice Beach. It assumes you have your own car or a rental car for the day. If it's summer, start in Hollywood to end up in Venice for sunset on the beach. If it's winter and the sun is setting at 4 pm, do the tour in reverse and start at the beach, ending in Hollywood after dark.

If you don't have a car available, you can also book a Hop On-Hop Off City Sightseeing Tour to visit most of the same locations without the driving.

If you don't get out of the car, the drive alone takes about 1 and a half to two and a half hours, depending on traffic, but you can get out and take a look at many different stops and still do this route in a day.

So let's get started exploring Hollywood!

Walking Around Hollywood & Highland

TripSavvy / Christian Hundley

We wouldn't necessarily recommend staying at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, but it's worth taking a look inside at this historic Hollywood landmark, and it makes a good starting reference.

Start your morning with breakfast at Mel's Drive-In , one block east on Highland just south of Hollywood Blvd , or grab a bagel at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf across from the hotel, then cross the street to compare your hand and footprints to your favorite stars in the forecourt at TCL (Grauman's) Chinese Theatre . Not much in the Hollywood & Highland shopping center next door will be open before 10 or 11 a.m., but walk across the front of the complex past the Dolby Theatre where the Oscars are held to the staircase leading up to the Babylon Courtyard . Don't forget to look down at the Hollywood Walk of Fame as you're walking to see if your favorite entertainers' stars are on this block.

You can take the escalator up to the Babylon Courtyard, but then you won't get a chance to admire how the architects managed to frame a view of the Hollywood Sign as you ascend the center of the staircase. The Courtyard itself looks like a Hollywood set with giant elephant sculptures perched high above the three-level ring of shops. Make your way up to the viewing bridges at the back of the courtyard via stairways or escalators on either side for your photo opportunity with the Hollywood Sign and Hollywood Hills as a backdrop. You can also see the Hollywood Methodist Church with its red ribbon painted on the tower. In the 1943 movie War of the Worlds, terrified citizens took refuge in this church from attacking aliens.

Driving Through Hollywood

TripSavvy / Christian Hundley

Head back to your car and drive east on Hollywood Blvd, past some of Hollywood's other landmarks. The El Capitan Theatre and Disney Entertainment Center opposite Hollywood & Highland was restored by the Disney Company to its previous glory. The Jimmy Kimmel Live! show is taped in the Entertainment Center, while Disney films are screened at next door El Capitan with pre-show visits by costumed movie characters. The Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Disney Studio Store shares the building.

On the next block, next to the dinosaur-topped Ripley's Believe It or Not , just down Highland, you can see the pink and green art deco façade of the original Max Factor factory, which now houses the Hollywood Museum . Continuing east, on your right you will pass the American Cinematheque at the historic Egyptian Theatre and the Art Deco Hollywood icon that was originally Kress Department store. It spent a long time as Frederick’s of Hollywood before being converted to a short-lived restaurant and nightclub. Hollywood's oldest restaurant, Musso & Frank Grill will be on your left.

At Hollywood and Vine, you can look for metered street parking to stop and take a photo of the circular tower of the Capitol Records building, the Hollywood and Vine signs and sky trackers and another view of the Hollywood Sign or you can look left at them as you turn right down Vine Street. Either way, when you're ready, head south (away from the hills) on Vine Street, then turn right on Sunset Boulevard. The half-golf-ball Cinerama Dome is on your left. Amoeba Music, at Ivar, is THE place to shop for hard-to-find music including a vast collection of recordings on vinyl and tape.

Following are two different routes to take you west to the ocean, depending on what you would like to see.

  • Route A takes you west by Museum Row on the Miracle Mile and the La Brea Tar Pits , if you're interested in pre-historic saber tooth cats and mammoths.
  • Route B is west via the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood .

Route A via the La Brea Tar Pits and the Museum Mile

TripSavvy / Christian Hundley

Continue down Sunset to La Brea. Turn left on La Brea until you get to Wilshire (about 2 miles). Turn right on Wilshire. You're entering the Museum Row on the Miracle Mile, which includes the Craft and Folk Art Museum, the striking Petersen Automotive Museum - whose shiny steal ribbons over red surface look like a car rounding the corner from across the street - and the many buildings of the LA County Museum of Art .

As you pass Curson, look for metered parking on the right in front of Hancock Park near the Page Museum and the La Brea Tar Pits. If there is no parking available on Wilshire, turn right on Fairfax and right on 6th Street to park on the other side of the park or park in one of the pay lots. There are entrance gates from 6th Street and from Wilshire, but the biggest tar pits are near the Wilshire entrance.

Take a quick stroll through the park to see these active tar pits where more pre-historic fossils have been discovered than anyplace else on earth. Active excavations are underway and there are daily tours of the current excavation pit at 1 p.m. Fossils from these pits have found their way into museums all over the world, but the largest collection is here at the Page Museum.

Optional Detour:  If you're ready for lunch head up Fairfax to 3rd Street to the LA Farmer's Market to grab a bite at one of the many food vendors in this permanent market building. If you finish lunch quickly, you might have time to stroll next door for some shopping or celebrity spotting at The Grove .

Continue west on Wilshire to Rodeo Drive .

Route B via West Hollywood

Instead of turning left at La Brea, continue on Sunset through West Hollywood on the famed Sunset Strip. You'll pass the Comedy Store and Laugh Factory where many famous comics got their start. You'll also pass some of LA's most revered live rock n' roll venues, the Viper Room , the Whiskey A-Go-Go , and the Roxy. West Hollywood usually has an interesting collection of quirky billboards soaring above the sidewalk cafes, bars and shops that line the streets.

Entering Beverly Hills , Sunset becomes a windy road with green hedges and trees blocking your view of most of the mansions tucked behind them. You'll pass the famed Beverly Hills Hotel on the right. You can turn left off of Sunset for a detour down famed Rodeo Drive which is at a 6-way intersection crossing Sunset at the same place as Cañon Drive.

Continue down Rodeo Drive

Rodeo Drive on the 1 Day LA Tour

From Sunset, turn left and proceed through several blocks of well-groomed mansions before you arrive at the short stretch of high-end designer boutiques recognized around the world. Rodeo Drive dead ends into the Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Wilshire Blvd. You can either go around the block and go back up to Sunset or turn right on Wilshire and head west toward the Beach.

If you're already on Wilshire, continue West to Rodeo Drive, which only goes to the right. Metered parking is available on Rodeo and surrounding streets, and some parking structures have an hour or 2 of free parking if you want to get out and walk around.

The designer shops only occupy three blocks, then Rodeo becomes a wide boulevard passing through a Beverly Hills neighborhood of multi-million-dollar mansions all the way back up to Sunset Blvd. Turn Left on Sunset heading west.

Sunset is a winding green route to the beach. Wilshire is an urban landscape of retail and commercial buildings with a green stretch through the L.A. Country Club.

If you want to take the Wilshire route, turn right at the Sunset 6-way intersection down Cañon Drive, then veer right at the next block on Beverly Drive, just to give you a different view back down to Wilshire, where you’ll turn right and pass Rodeo Drive again on your way to  the beach .

If you're in any kind of a hurry, the Wilshire route is usually slower, but they'll both be pretty leisurely.

To Santa Monica via Sunset Boulevard

If you take Sunset, you'll drive by UCLA on the left. You can detour through campus if you're interested. It's a beautiful campus. Beyond UCLA, after you pass Will Rogers State Historic Park veer left on Chautauqua as Sunset veers right. (If you miss Chautauqua, Sunset goes all the way to the beach, but it will add several additional curvy miles to the route.) Chautauqua will take you down to the ocean, where you will turn left on Pacific Coast Highway (known locally as PCH). PCH is a limited-access highway as it comes into Santa Monica . Take a slight left from PCH onto California Incline, which is basically a left-exiting off-ramp from PCH to Ocean Blvd, where you will turn right for a few blocks before turning left on Broadway and right into the parking structure adjacent to the Santa Monica Place Mall. Alternately, if you miss California Incline, you can   stay in the right lane and follow the signs to take the middle exit on Moomat Ahiko Way (as PCH turns left and Appian Way goes straight), then turn left on Ocean and right on Broadway to the parking structure. If you miss the curve and end up on Appian Way, take the next left up to Ocean.

Be sure to stay right and NOT follow the Pacific Coast Highway or you'll end up on the freeway. If that does happen, take the first exit, Lincoln, turn left on Lincoln back to Colorado Ave, then take a left back to the beach. The parking structure will be on your right after 4th street.

Parking structures 7 and 8 adjacent to the mall have free 90-minute parking, $1 for the next hour and $1.50 per 30 minutes after that. The lower floors are 3 hours only.  A few other downtown lots have the same rates. There is also parking at the Civic Center, or there are multiple pay lots at the beach and short-term metered street parking.

To Santa Monica via Wilshire

Take Wilshire through Beverly Hills and Century City, into Santa Monica to 4th Street; turn left on 4th. Turn Right on Broadway and left into the Santa Monica Place parking structure.

Alternately, if you're running late and it's not rush hour, you can take Wilshire to the 405 Freeway South, exit to the 10 Freeway west, exit 4th Street at the end of the freeway. Follow the sign for 4th Street, then turn left off of 4th onto Broadway and into the parking structure.

Exploring Santa Monica

Parking is free in the Santa Monica Place parking structure for the first 90 minutes, as are other city parking structures in the vicinity. If you are in need of a restroom, there are public restrooms at the shopping center.

From Santa Monica Place or the parking structure, exit on foot toward Broadway and the Third Street Promenade.

If you want to visit the Pier, turn left and walk down Broadway to Ocean. The Pier is one more block to the left at Colorado. The Santa Monica Pier has a Carousel, a solar-powered Ferris Wheel, a small roller coaster and a couple other rides at Pacific Park , as well as the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, a Trapeze School, a fast food court and restaurants and some gift shops - and of course, a great view of the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica Beach . There are summer concerts held on Thursdays at the foot of the pier adjacent to the on-pier parking lot.

Third Street Promenade is lined with shops and restaurants and usually has an array of street performers, especially during summer and on weekends and evenings the rest of the year. For some budget designer snacks, head upstairs at the food court at 1315 Third Street Promenade and try a Wolfgang Puck Pizza. It's only budget compared to dining at Wolfgang Puck's other Santa Monica establishment, Chinois on Main.

You can download this Walking Map of the Third Street Promenade .

Venice Beach

Retrieve your car from the parking structure at Santa Monica Place and make your way around the block to where Main Street starts on the other side of the Mall. Main Street will take you through an area of shops, galleries and restaurants as you cross over into Venice Beach . Proceed to the traffic circle at Windward and look for a reasonable place to park. There are a variety of parking lots in the neighborhood with prices ranging from $3 to $15 depending on the day and season. In the off-season, you may find street parking. If you're stopping for less than an hour, you may score a spot right there on Windward right by the beach. Don't forget to note your space and pay at the pay station mid-block.

From Windward, walk to the right, down the boardwalk between the vendor stalls and the street performers past the outdoor gym at “Muscle Beach.” Walk about 7 short blocks to watch the sunset over a casual dinner at the Sidewalk Café. If you're all walked out already, there's a parking lot off the alley behind the Sidewalk Café just off of Clubhouse Ct. For those on an even tighter budget, grab a slice of pizza or a sausage sandwich at one of the Venice Beach snack bars and find a spot on a bench or a nice stretch of sand to enjoy the view. Bring a sweater or jacket. The beach is cool in the evening, even in summer.

After dinner, you're close to the airport if you've got a red-eye flight to catch, or you can deadhead back to Hollywood and grab a drink at one of the Roosevelt's 6 bars or restaurants.

If you're still standing, head out to one of LA's Top Dance Clubs or Comedy Clubs .

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

  • M3 CS Touring is a wagon version of last year’s CS sedan
  • S58 inline six tuned to 543 hp, drives all four wheels through a mandatory auto
  • Aero upgrades and suspension tweaks increase cornering speeds

BMW hadn’t sold a Touring version of a real M car for years until the current M3 appeared in 2022. But now it’s making up for lost time and is getting ready to reveal three new hot wagons. One is the M5, another is the mildly facelifted M3 Touring, and the third is the car you see here, the CS Touring.

As its name suggests, the wickedest 3-Series wagon yet is a shooting brake version of the M3 CS sedan BMW launched last year, and will feature most of the same aesthetic and functional mods to make it sharper to drive than the base Touring, without compromising on cargo capacity.

Related: New BMW M5 Touring Confirmed For USA

Unlike the M4 CSL coupe, which comes only in rear-wheel drive, the CS sedan is restricted to xDrive all-wheel drive and automatic transmission, the same configuration already used by the regular M3 Touring. But what the CS does inherit from the CSL is the same S58 3.0-liter bi-turbo six that’s tuned to deliver 543 hp (550 PS).

That gives it a healthy 40 hp (40 PS) advantage over the current M3 Touring, but the gap will narrow soon when that ordinary M3 Touring gets the same bump from 503 hp (510 PS) to 523 hp (530 PS) that the M4 has just been given. BMW quotes a 3.2-second zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) time for the CS sedan and the wagon is unlikely to be more than a tenth slower.

BMW M3 CS Touring Puts The Waaaah Into Wagon

The last time we spied a CS Touring prototype it still had an ordinary M3 grille, but this latest test car has the CS-specific grille bars that, together with the aggressive front splitter, give the front end an even angrier look. Other upgrades will include changes to the suspension geometry and a cast aluminum strut brace. But BMW probably won’t offer a carbon roof on the wagon.

Back in September, we reported on a rumor that fewer than 2,000 CS Tourings will be produced and that even building such a low number of cars could be a struggle due to production capacity constraints. Sadly, no matter how many BMW does build, it won’t be offering any of them in North America, where the plain M3 Touring is also a no-show.

It’s not all bad news, though. BMW has confirmed that the upcoming M5 Touring will be available in the U.S.

Mustang Unleashed Tour is like a SEMA show just for the pony car

Ford's description of the Mustang Unleashed tour reads like a SEMA devoted exclusively to the pony car. It's just the kind of present an industry icon — one with perhaps the greatest aftermarket in the world — deserves for its 60th anniversary year. Even better, the present's being shared with Mustang owners and the public. A "festival-like atmosphere" at 12 stops throughout the year will include static walkarounds, customizing and tuning ideas in the Mustang Garage, demos of the Mustang's Remote Rev system and the burnout-producing line lock, and hot-lap ridealongs with professional drivers.

Six locations have been announced so far, three in April, two in May, one in June. Six more will be announced later. The initial schedule is:

  • April 12-13: Formula Drift, Long Beach, California
  • April 21: Fabulous Fords, Irwindale, California
  • April 26-28: Psych Fest, Austin, Texas
  • May 10-11: Formula Drift, Braselton, Georgia
  • May 17-19: HyperFest, Alton, Virginia
  • June 7-9: Backwoods, Ozark, Arkansas

Looks like the automaker's not sticking to the usual Mustang-focused crowd with this tour; the automaker's out to expand the Mustang user base with some of these dates. Austin Psych Fest is "a three-day lineup of psych rock, dream pop, and indie rock and under the stars and oak trees in the backyard at The Far Out Lounge." Backwoods is also all about the music, an EDM festival sure to have crowd of Mustangs in the grassy lots (this one's gonna be the wild joker in the bunch). One of the dates later in the year will be at ComplexCon in Las Vegas, which organizer Complex magazine calls the " Super Bowl of culture."

Not every location will offer every event; attendees are more likely to get hot laps at HyperFest, held at Virginia International Raceway, than in the fields at Backwoods.

Registration is open now for all owners of the 2024 Ford Mustang . It's necessary to enter a VIN before getting access to purchase a ticket, so we're not sure about the entry fee. Non-'Stang drivers or owners of earlier model years are on standby — apparently they have to show up to the event gates and hope there are tickets left.

Mustang Unleashed Tour is like a SEMA show just for the pony car

Teen Mustang owner fighting cancer likens racetrack experience to Taylor Swift concert

car with tour

Joseph Tegerdine had never been on a professional racetrack, let alone behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang Dark Horse actually rocketing 112 mph. He remained fearless even as his life continued to be dominated by sharp turns and tight corners.

"It was kind of terrifying at first. Then I was like, 'oh, this is actually pretty chill.' It's just really, really fun," Tegerdine, 18, of Springville, Utah, told the Free Press. "There’s so much to be thinking about in this car that your brain is 100% occupied — a little more gas, hit the brake hard, turn, turn. It’s just surreal."

He mentioned the Oscar-winning film " Ford v Ferrari " and asked, "You know that famous line?" — referring to the part where legendary racing driver Carroll Shelby says, "There's a point at 7,000 rpm ... where everything fades. The machine becomes weightless."

Tegerdine said, "It was 100% that feeling. Everything fades and you're floating."

Why a racetrack in Charlotte

The young man traveled earlier this month from Utah to North Carolina with his father, Joe Tegerdine. (Father and son have the same name. For clarity, we'll refer to the father as Joe and his son as Joseph).

Ford CEO Jim Farley offered the two a trip to the Ford Performance Racing School at the famed Charlotte Motor Speedway. The auto executive, himself a competitive race car driver whose first car was a Mustang , wanted Joseph to experience the untethered thrill of a Mustang on the track. Farley had read on social media that Joe Tegerdine bought his son a 2020 Mustang because the teen's bone cancer was moving too quickly to not grant all wishes immediately

"For those wondering why I’d buy my 18yr old son a 330hp Mustang, well, he’s been given months to live and can’t work long enough to buy one himself," Tegerdine tweeted on X. "His comment on the way home, 'Dad, I’m going to squeeze a few extra months of life just to be able to drive this.' ”

More than 13.8 million people read the post, and nearly 200,000 have commented, shared, liked or bookmarked it.

Dad, the general manager of North America for  Reencle  home composting systems, has heard from people who survived cancer, who lost children, who urge the family to remain strong.

"There's so much social upheaval and so many people are hurting right now ... to be able to have literally thousands of people reach out, you just realize most of us are just good people doing our best to try and live a fulfilling life," Joe said.

"We get caught in this doom cycle," he said. "I attribute a lot to politics and politicians trying to divide us and focus on negative and dark things to maintain power and generate wealth for themselves. The rest of us get caught in these cycles. To be able to step out and see the goodness of humanity and people is super inspiring to me. It reminds me that, for most of us, that’s our reality."

Feel yourself airborne

When Farley offered the trip in a private message to Joe, the father-son duo accepted immediately. Other Mustang owners were at the track that day, too. Ford put the father and son, with custom helmets, in their cars to create unique drive experiences they would share later.

"We had a drifting course," that taught how to make controlled skids sideways through turns, and smoked the tires, Joe said. "After driving, we did a timed skills course with cones and instruction with professional drivers. That was really cool. In the afternoon, we headed to the main track, where we had a pace driver, and three cars would follow. It was Joseph and I and another car. We hauled butt behind the professional driver. I think I got up to 115 miles per hour on the side wall."

But that wasn't all.

"In the end, we got to ride with a professional driver and it was like, I mean, G-forces after G-forces. You could feel yourself airborne in the seat. You come through a turn and you feel all the pressure in the turn and as soon as they hit the throttle out of the turn, you're pinned to the sat," Joe said. "Joseph was so excited. I had not seen him have that much energy for months."

They attended a dinner hosted by the racing school on April 11, the night before heading to the track. Joseph ran into Laurie Transou , chief engineer of the Mustang program, and talked design and engineering. (Last year, Transou encouraged young adults to take their moms to the racetrack for Mother's Day instead of brunch.)

Proximity to Transou was coincidence, Ford said. She had scheduled months in advance attending the program. Joseph once wanted to be an engineer — before his classes were replaced with medical treatments and surgeries.

"Normally, you'd have conversations about, 'when you’re an engineer,' or 'you could come back and do the two- or three-day course,'" Joe said. "But then you realize this is probably it. So you’re very much in the now. And embracing that moment together because there’s a recognition of the finality of it. You know there’s not going to be probably a next time. So we just try to enjoy those moments together."

Farley told the Free Press in a statement, “I’m just pleased we were able to help Joe and Joseph enjoy a very special day. It was an honor for our team to host them in Charlotte.”

It was a great time for a kid who has always loved speed, Joe said. Joseph used to ride like lightning on a motorbike at their old Texas cattle ranch. In eighth grade, a sore knee led to the cancer diagnosis for Joseph, who played football and ran track. When driving the Mustang, he drives with a prosthetic right leg now. Cancer required amputation.

But Joseph refuses to stop living. He remains a shining light, his father said.

Still, never feeling like an invincible teenager

This past weekend, Joseph took his girlfriend, Lily Flake, to her prom at Mapleton High School.

"It's fun to be a little teenager for a bit," he said. "I’m technically a teenager, but I’m not really a teenager. Teenagers think they’re invincible. They have the ability to go do stupid things and they don’t think of the consequences. 'Yes, we’re going to load 10 people onto a golf cart and go zooming around town, no problem.' But at age 13, I had to come to the reality that I’m very much vincible and I'm going to die. I never really got that whole 'invincible teenager who can do whatever and it’ll be fine' feeling."

Joseph said, "But it’s nice sometimes to remember, it sounds dumb because I'm only 18, but it's nice to remember to stay young sometimes. My girlfriend helps with that. She loves fun things."

Asked how he's doing this week, he said, "I don’t really know. It's kind of just confusing, I guess. There’s just a lot of a lot. So I don’t know exactly how I’m doing. You just kind of go through every day and take it day by day."

Life can be a blur, like an Eras Tour experience

After nearly two weeks, the trip going to Charlotte feels like a blur, Joseph said. He compared it to what he called "a Taylor Swift phenomenon." He explained that people go to her concert and don't remember details. "I don't know if you've ever heard this. You're just on this adrenaline high for, like, four straight hours. When you walk out, everything kind of settles and like, whoa, that just happened. But you can't really remember what actually happened. Everything is kind of hazy. You remember the feelings associated but you couldn't put, like, words to what you were feeling at the moment."

In August 2023, he attended an Eras Tour concert with his girlfriend at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

These adventures are intentional. For Joseph, everything in life has to be about right now, his father said.

"You just have to make a choice. You can either get depressed and life is over and 'poor me' or whatever or just accept the fact that this is what life is, and we're all going to die at some point and we all have to reconcile that," Joe said. "You never want your children go before you, but millions of people before me had to deal with it and millions will after me. ... I have a strong faith in the afterlife. I don’t look at death — I don’t see it as the finality that sometimes I think we’re prone to. To me, it's like a transition. It’s the next adventure. But it's going to be hard to say goodbye."

Finding a glimmer of comfort in shocking loss

Doctors delivered really bad news last week, Joe said. Scans came back, and Joseph has tumors going up through his hip and down into his leg. His osteosarcoma has become worse than doctors feared. A life measured in years is now measured in months.

For a few minutes, Joe stopped talking. And he just cried.

"His favorite uncle passed away" Sunday, Joe said.

Joseph saw his Uncle Jerry just a few weeks ago, and nothing seemed wrong, Joe said. Then the man went to the hospital a few days ago with pain and the doctors discovered necrosis of the small intestine after having his colon removed awhile ago, Joe said. Doctors went in to try to fix the issue and couldn't. He died.

That was the family member who called and texted and sent pick-me-up gifts and provided a constant presence to Joseph through the child's cancer journey over the past five years.

"Joseph’s only fear of death is being alone on the other side," Joe said. "We want to be greeted by our parents and brothers and sisters. So, to me, knowing that his uncle will be on the other side waiting for him, to me, is, um, just a tender mercy. Because I’m not going to be there to be on the other side with him."
