2024 is the Year Of The Dragon

In 1982 John Wetton, Geoff Downes, Carl Palmer and Steve Howe became the founding fathers of super group Asia, responsible for a string of multi-million selling albums and chart topping hits across the globe. Asia’s self-titled1982 debut album was the biggest selling album in the world. The band dominated the airwaves and for many “ Heat Of The Moment ”, “ Only Time Will Tell ” and “ Sole Survivor ”, amongst others, were the soundtrack to their youth.

Another multi-million seller, “Alpha” followed in 1983 and in 1986 “Astra” competed the trio of MTV era hits.  Greg Lake briefly joined the band for a Japanese tour where Asia’s show from the fabled Budokan was the first inter-continental simulcast.  In 2006, the founder members reformed and released several new albums before John Wetton’s untimely passing in 2017.  Since John’s passing, Geoff and Carl have toured with Sam Coulson, Billy Sherwood, Ron Bumblefoot Thal and Steve Howe guesting, and had a tour planned with Marc Bonilla on vocal duties that did not materialize due to Covid.

In the Summer of 2023, Geoff Downes spear-headed a memorial concert to remember and celebrate the life of his late, much-loved friend and Asia co-founder member, the great John Wetton.  At the concert, he invited rock n roll veteran John Mitchell – who had played with both Wetton and Downes in Icon and in Wetton’s own band – to join him on stage, taking on lead guitar duties.  The duo were joined by new-comer Harry Whitley, who Downes had discovered and whose vocal talents so closely resembled that of Wetton’s it was nothing short of spine-tingling.  Together they played a number of Asia’s chart-topping hits.  The reception was uproarious and It became clear that something magical was happening.  Perhaps, thought Downes, it was time to bring the songs of Asia to a whole new audience? The dragon began to stir once more.

Busy touring the globe, the great Carl Palmer is immersed in a project very dear to his heart, the Return Of Emerson Lake & Palmer.  The legendary Steve Howe remains at the helm of progressive rock legends, Yes.   So it was that Geoff made the decision to take a fresh, new-look Asia back out on the road, recruiting Mitchell and Whitley as new members and bringing in the drumming excellence of the incomparable Virgil Donati, who had played with Wetton in UK.

Asia has entertained and delighted a multitude of audiences and millions of people over the last 40 years.  Some of the world’s greatest musicians have taken up the Asia baton during that time.  However Geoff Downes believes that the time is right to bring a fresh, new-look Asia out into the light.

The Year of the Dragon foretells good fortune, abundance and prosperity.  The Dragon blessed 1982, the year Asia was first unleashed into the world – and here we are again.  The journey has come full-circle.  Time for the dragon to take flight once more.

Asia get ready for 40th anniversary tour

Geoff Downes and Carl Palmer reunite under Asia banner for live dates for 2022

Asia

Carl Palmer and Geoff Downes will tour together as Asia for a 40th anniversary tour later this year. They will be joined by current Yes bassist Billy Sherwood and former Keith Emerson guitarist Marc Bonilla.

"We are planning an extensive tour to celebrate our 40th anniversary," says Downes. "The music will feature all the hits the fans have embraced. 40 years of Asia is a real musical milestone for us. The success we experienced with our early albums has carried us through and gave us the foundation when we reformed in 2006. Asia has been together since, although we lost John in 2017 to cancer. Still we endured and we will carry on now with Marc Bonilla who we know will be a great addition to the band."

"The fans have never left Asia," adds Carl Palmer. "That first Asia album, with all the radio and MTV hits weaved the fabric of the music scene on the early 1980s. Those great sigs like Heat Of The Moment , Sole Survivor and Only Time Will Tell still hold up today. When we play those songs and our other hits, we can see the entire audience singing along."

Asia released their self-titled debut album in 1982, which went on to become the biggest selling album of the year. They followed it up with Alpha in 1983 and Astr a in 1985. Geoff Downes led a new line-up of the band through the 90s until the original four members, who also included Yes guitarist Steve Howe , reunited in 2006.

Greg Lake briefly replaced original singer and bassist John Wetton in 1983, while Steve Howe left the band prior to the Astra album, where he was replaced by former Krokus guitarist Mandy Meyer.

Asia recently released the ten-disc  The Official Live Bootlegs Volume 1  box set .

ASIA Feat. Original Members CARL PALMER And GEOFF DOWNES Announces 40th-Anniversary Celebration

ASIA , one of the greatest and best-loved supergroups to emerge during the 1980s, is currently preparing for an extensive 40th-anniversary celebration, due to kick off in summer 2022. Featuring founding members Carl Palmer ( ELP , CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN ) and Geoff Downes ( YES , THE BUGGLES ),the group will also include longtime bassist/ vocalist Billy Sherwood ( YES ) and newest member, guitarist/ lead vocalist Marc Bonilla , (solo artist, KEITH EMERSON BAND ). The band is currently being booked for a U.S. tour to start late summer this year.

"40 years of ASIA is a real musical milestone for us," says Downes . "The success we experienced with our early albums has carried us through and gave us the foundation when we reformed in 2006. ASIA has been together ever since, although we lost John in 2017 to cancer. Still, we have endured and will carry on now with Marc Bonilla , who we know will be a great addition to the band."

"The fans have never left ASIA ," says Palmer . "That first ASIA album with all those radio and MTV hits weaved the fabric of the music scene in the early 1980s. Those great songs like 'Heat Of The Moment' , 'Sole Survivor' and 'Only Time Will Tell' still hold up today. When we play those songs and our other hits, we can see the entire audience singing along."

In December the multi-platinum selling English supergroup released its most ambitious collection to date: a 10-CD boxset "The Official Live Bootlegs Volume 1" . Issued through BMG Records on December 3, the expansive set chronicles five complete performances of the original lineup captured between 1982 and 2010. The collection celebrates the huge appeal of the concert tours that followed ASIA 's first two albums in 1982 and 1983. The success continued following ASIA 's 25th-anniversary reunion in 2006 and three more highly acclaimed albums. The slipcase boxset features 5 x 2CD concerts from 1982 (Buffalo, NY, USA),1983 (Worcester, MA, USA),2007 (São Paulo, Brazil),2008 (Tokyo, Japan) and 2010 (London, UK). The bootleg collection follows a previous 5 CD box set of studio recordings released in April, 2021.

Downes , Steve Howe ( YES , guitars), Palmer and John Wetton ( KING CRIMSON , UK , bass/vocals),took the world by storm with ASIA 's eponymous debut album, globally the biggest-selling album of 1982, and the single "Heat Of The Moment" . ASIA was a true "supergroup", pooling the talents of its four members who had already amassed tens of millions of record sales with their collective bands of the 1970s. Leaving behind their progressive roots, ASIA embraced the commercial FM rock sound that dominated U.S. airwaves and took that, and the new MTV video channel, by storm. The single "Heat Of The Moment" was a worldwide monster smash and their eponymous 1982 debut album spent an incredible nine weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard chart as ASIA became the biggest-selling album of the year and world tour dates sold out.

A second album, "Alpha" , was released in 1983, followed by "Astra" in 1985. The four original members reconvened in 2006 for a world tour, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of that incredible success, and the album "Phoenix" followed. While the members were still heavily involved in other projects, they came together again to record "Omega" in 2010 and "XXX" in 2012, both albums were acclaimed by their faithful fans and supported by more world tours. Howe stepped back from ASIA to concentrate on his work with YES and was absent for 2014's "Gravitas" . Following this tour came the news of Wetton 's treatment for cancer, a fight he sadly lost in 2017. ASIA was special guest of JOURNEY for an extensive U.S. tour in 2017, and in 2019 the band hit the road with YES for the "Royal Affair" tour.

"We are planning an extensive tour to celebrate our 40th," adds Downes , "and the music will feature all the hits the fans have embraced. Stay tuned! It will be show you won't want to miss."

Internationally renowned for his rhythmic skills, Pierre remains a defining factor in the Focus sound. Guitarist Menno Gootjes, who participated in Focus at an earlier stage, and acclaimed bass player Udo Pannekeet, complete the band’s current line-up. Recently, Focus’s biggest hit “Hocus Pocus” was used in a 4-minute Nike commercial before the World Cup broadcast. Focus music can be regularly heard on Top Gear and Saxondale on TV in the UK.

A new Focus era has arrived! There is a rejuvenated passion amongst the band as they released the first studio album for 6 years, Focus 11, in early 2019. They toured the world in in support of the new album, and are now excited re their 50th Anniversary tour. Unfortunately the world situation had halted the 50th Anniversary celebrations, but Focus now are happy touring the world again.

And eagerly awaiting their new album in collaboration with Roger Dean due out very soon in 2024.

Ted Turner and Andy Powell were recruited and Wishbone Ash was born.hroughout the classic first decade of Wishbone Ash’s career, Martin stamped his identity on each Wishbone Ash album with his distinctive upfront bass style, as well as being the principal vocalist and songwriter within the band. Disagreements over group policy and musical direction led to Martin and the band parting company in 1980. “I thought the band were doing really well and breaking new ground,” says Martin, “but the band felt they needed to change things. I disagreed with their analysis. I thought it was wrong and it was proven to be wrong.”   Throughout the eighties, Martin pursued a career in record production, but continued to write and record – forming a new band the Wolf Gang – although recordings from this period were not released at the time. 1987 saw the reformation of the original Wishbone Ash and Martin returning as bassist, vocalist and producer for a trio of acclaimed albums for the IRS label.   1991 saw the remnants of the original Wishbone Ash line-up making the decision to continue without the band’s founding member Martin Turner.  Ted Turner would also part company with the band shortly after, thus truly ending the “classic” era of Wishbone Ash.  Martin Turner, however, remained an integral part of the Wishbone Ash set-up, maintaining awareness and appreciation of the classic marks of the band through his work in the remastering and remixing of the band’s back catalogue.  Indeed, hardly a year has passed without Martin being involved in a Wishbone Ash project of some form be it through studio work or live appearance.   1996 saw the release of Martin’s debut solo album, Walking The Reeperbahn (a collection of recordings spanning the period 1980-96), which contained many of the melodic qualities associated with the classic Wishbone Ash line-ups. In addition he recorded with his friend, the late Roy Hollingworth (In The Flesh album) and also, between 1998-2006, toured and recorded with respected blues/rock band The Blue Bishops, for whom he also produced the 2002 album Deep.   But Wishbone Ash remained Martin’s first love and 2005 saw Martin Turner taking his Wishbone-related activity one stage further with his long awaited return to the live arena and the formation of a new touring band, carrying forward the best-loved elements associated with the definitive marks of Wishbone Ash, fronted by the unique talents of the band’s founding member.   Martin Turner has continued to explore the classic music of Wishbone Ash through his live performances and live CD/DVD releases and in 2015 also released the original studio album “Written in the Stars”.

Geoff Downes announces John Wetton An Extraordinary Life book

ABOUT THE BOOK

Musician, songwriter, singer and “top bloke” (as Geoff Downes describes him), John Wetton lived a truly extraordinary life. In this book some seventy-plus people who knew and worked with John, from Family, King Crimson, Uriah Heep, Wishbone Ash, Roxy Music, U.K., Asia, the John Wetton solo band and beyond, pay tribute to that fact. Other contributors hail from the music industry and have compelling tributes to pay, equal to those from friends who knew John for decades, and his family.

Among the stories of friendship, music and sometimes craziness are reflections on what made John Wetton such an unforgettable man. His friends and family do not steer clear of his problems but rather explain the why, how, and triumph over them in honest and touching recollections. Scattered among the stories are personal and classic photos of John at work and play which add to the celebration of An Extraordinary Life.

The English supergroup Asia, formed in London back in 1981 by John Wetton (Bass), Steve Howe (Guitar), Geoff Downes (Keyboards) and Carl Palmer (Drums) announced that they will celebrate their 40th-Anniversary with a tour in 2022. However, the only original members of the band that will be on the road will be Carl Palmer and Geoff Downes. John Wetton died back in 2017 at the age of 67 and Steve Howe is currently playing with Yes.

Palmer and Downes will share the stage with guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal (Ex-Guns N’ Roses), bassist Billy Sherwood (Yes) and guitarist/singer Marc Bonilla (Ex-Keith Emerson Band). Tour dates still weren’t revealed by the group.

Keyboardist Geoff Downes talked about the Asia’s 40th anniversary tour in a official statement, saying:

“40 years of ASIA is a real musical milestone for us. The success we experienced with our early albums has carried us through and gave us the foundation when we reformed in 2006. ASIA has been together ever since, although we lost John in 2017 to cancer. Still, we have endured and will carry on now with Marc Bonilla, who we know will be a great addition to the band.”

Drummer Carl Palmer also talked about the tour, saying:

“The fans have never left ASIA. That first ASIA album with all those radio and MTV hits weaved the fabric of the music scene in the early 1980s. Those great songs like ‘Heat Of The Moment’, ‘Sole Survivor’ and ‘Only Time Will Tell’ still hold up today. When we play those songs and our other hits, we can see the entire audience singing along.”

With a commercial approach of Progressive Rock music, Asia created many Rock and Roll successful classics like “Heat Of The Moment”, “Only Time Will Tell”, “Don’t Cry” and “Sole Survivor”.

Drummer Carl Palmer also revealed recently that a Emerson, Lake & Palmer “reunion” will probably happen in 2022, using old footage of Keith Emerson and Greg Lake.

Asia (founded in 1981) is a British progressive rock supergroup formed of fallen flagship progressive rock bands King Crimson, Yes and Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

The original members: John Wetton, formerly the vocalist/bassist of King Crimson, Family, Roxy Music; Steve Howe, formerly the guitarist of Yes; Geoff Downes, formerly keyboardist of Yes and The Buggles; and Carl Palmer formerly drummer of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, all had significant experience before being brought together. In 1980 Wetton and Howe were put together by music scout John Kalodner at Geffen Records and the two then started writing material for a new album. The year after Palmer joined along with Howe’s fellow Yes cohort Geoff Downes.

The band’s first musical releases were seen as disappointing by critics and progressive-rock fans, classed as easily accessible radio-friendly rock, although they found new interest from fans of popular classic rock acts Journey, Boston and Styx.

Asia’s debut self-titled album released March 1982 represented a huge commercial success for the band. The album spent nine weeks at No. 1 in the U.S. album chart, selling over 10 million copies worldwide and has never been out of print. Singles “Only Time Will Tell and “Heat of the Moment” contributed to this success becoming popular Top 40 hits, the latter of which, arguably Asia’s most recognised song, climbed to No. 4 on the Hot 100. After the release the band set out on a tour of various U.S. theatres however had to expand to massive arenas due to their popularity and high ticket demand, and went on to win a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1982.

Despite maintaining a devoted following and receiving considerable television and radio attention, none of Asia’s subsequent albums ever achieved the commercial success of the first. Their follow-up “Alpha” released July 1983, produced the singles “Eye to Eye”, “My Own Time” and “The Smile Has Left Your Eyes” which became huge fan favourites. Based on the ‘disappointing’ success of “Alpha”, Wetton was booted from the group in 1983 and replaced by former bandmate of King Crismon and ELP frontman Greg Lake only for Wetton to return in 1984 to start work on the new album.

Asia’s third album titled “Arcadia” before a change to “Astra” was released in November 1985 which performed worse than “Alpha” and “Asia” and resulted in the label cancelling the subsequent tour. The band went through a period of being more off than on, with line-up changes occurring frequently.

In 1990 Asia released “Then & Now”, a best-of album with four new tracks which received substantial airplay and led to two sold-out nights in the Soviet Union in front of 20,000 fans. The band toured here and there for albums “Aqua” in 1992, “Aria” in 1994, “Arena” in 1996, “Aura” in 2001 and “Silent Nation” in 2004.

2012 saw the return of the original Asia line-up and with it the album “XXX” which featured the popular ingle “Face on the Bridge”. Shortly after Howe announced his departure from the group to pursue other things, and the band introduced guitarist Sam Coulson who contributed to the 2014 album “Gravitas”.

Live reviews

I won't belabor the background of these icons of progressive rock - John Wetton, Carl Palmer, and Geoff Downs... sadly, Steve Howe decided to focus on solo work and Yes' tour (ironically - Geoff was on the same Yes tour... saw them only a month or so ago - thanks for coming back Geoff!). That said - the 27-year-old Sam Coulson not only filled the spot, but left his own mark as well. Coming in from touring with Carl Palmer's band, he was a perfect fit to a rockin' evening. I won't belabor the setlist - just to say that it ranged the entire expanse of their career, some, Wetton was clear to point out, that were written before Coulson was even born. :-) While I've seen each play separately in their own accord (except for Coulton), together as Asia, they exhibit true mastery. Some will say that Asia "sold out to pop" (well, Downes is credited with the very first music video with the Bangles...), it was obvious that each not only performed flawlessly, but they were having a lot of fun doing it! Of particular note - each time I have ween Wetton perform, he is not only a great bassist, but a true lyricist. You see and feel his emotion... especially in "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes"... However, Carl Palmer's drumming, and in particular, his extended solo, stole the show. I have to first state that I actually cringe at the "obligatory drum solo", as very few really make it worth one's while to listen. This was clearly amongst the best I've seen, and I've seen quite a few. Moves I've *never* seen before (LOVED his undulating one stick on a cymbal while tapping and maintaining the undulation with the other... hard to describe... incredible to watch. The show had pure energy from beginning to end... yeah, it may be pop... but it's glorious pop... :-) Check out my pics: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10204086142566810&set=a.1377867119689.54242.1022200766&type=1&theater&notif_t=like

Although Asia is considered a supergroup consisting of various members from well respected progressive rock bands, they have consolidated their sound into something unique and of their own.

The band’s members have performed in some of the highest caliber progressive rock bands out there. John Wetton played bass for King Crimson, Steve Howe played guitar for Yes, Geoff Downes played keyboards for Yes, and Carl Palmer played drums for Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Each member brings their unique style to Asia, but as a collective they are able to create their own sound. Although Asia has some highly technical progressive rock elements to their music, they are able to play straight forward rock songs that will immediately grasp your attention such as “Heat of the Moment”.

Asia is absolutely fantastic live. Carl Palmer rocks away on his huge drum kit consisting of double bass drums and two gongs positioned behind him. Geoff Downes is surrounded by a tower of synthesizers, which allows him to create ethereal, ambient sounds on and produces incredibly catchy leads. John Wetton keeps the rhythm pulsing with his intricate bass playing and he manages to sing every note in the perfect timbre, reaching incredible vocal ranges. Steve Howe often plays simple, but catchy chord progressions that have a strong force. He often shreds a few solos on his guitar, but never manages to draw it out into irritable lengths like some progressive rock bands have been known to do.

Asia has been consistently releasing albums and touring since their formation. On their most recent tour you can expect them to play through their classic songs like “Only Time Will Tell” and “Sole Survivor”, as well as play through some of their newest tracks from their 2014 release, Gravitas.

How Carl Palmer Is Honoring His Late ELP Bandmates on New Tour

Carl Palmer is preparing to hit the road soon with one of his all-star bands. And he has his other popular group on the runway.

The drummer begins his 10-date Welcome Back My Friends - The Return of Emerson, Lake & Palmer Tour — during which he'll be playing live with video and audio recordings of his late bandmates — on Nov. 18 in Philadelphia. (You can view a complete list of those tour dates down below.) Then he'll return to Asia for a 20-show tour in mid-February to belatedly celebrate the 40th anniversary of that band's four-times-platinum self-titled debut album . Alan Parsons is slated to be Asia's partner on the tour.

"To me, it's all just part of my career, and if there's an anniversary, let's do it," Palmer tells UCR. "It doesn't seem like that long ago; nothing ever does when you're our age [72]. It all seems like it was yesterday. Some of it is very clear, some of it isn't very clear."

The Asia 2023 tour lineup will feature Palmer and co-founder Geoff Downes, with Yes bassist Billy Sherwood, who's been part of Asia since 2017. The newcomer will be southpaw singer and guitarist Marc Bonilla, who was part of the Keith Emerson Band and has also played with Glenn Hughes, Ronnie Montrose, California Transit Authority and others. "[Bonilla] was an idea of mine," Palmer says. "I thought he'd be good to bring in."

Steve Howe , another Asia co-founder who served as a kind of special guest on the band's last trek during the 2019 Royal Affair Tour , opted out of this run. "He needs to reserve his energy for Yes at the moment. That's what I'm hearing," Palmer says. "He might join later." Bonilla is the 17th musician to log time as an Asia member, a group Palmer says has become facile with the changes. "It's about being professional, that's all I can say," Palmer notes. "There's a job to do and everybody gets down and does it. We enjoy doing it — I think that's what's very important."

Palmer has also been having a good time putting together the Welcome Back My Friends show, celebrating ELP's 50th anniversary, which was delayed due to the pandemic. He first investigated using hologram images of Emerson and Greg Lake , but after looking at prototypes he decided that "that didn't work for me. It was a bit spooky for me. It just didn't seem to be a fit." Instead, he opted for footage taken from the trio's 1992 performances at London's Royal Albert Hall, which was released as a live album and a now out-of-print home video. "It was a five-camera shoot," Palmer recalls. "And the recording of the music was done individually, so there were all individual tracks of absolutely everything. And it's absolutely fantastic.

"It was obviously good enough because we released it on a DVD, but the label sold out the following week, two weeks, and this DVD got lost in the wash. At the time it was upsetting, but right now it's pretty good for me because the footage on this DVD is absolutely superb. So I thought this is the most honest way to do it because this is not some actor dressed up as Keith Emerson. This is actually Keith Emerson playing the keyboards, likewise with Greg Lake."

Watch ELP Perform 'Lucky Man' at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1992

The video of Emerson and Lake will be featured on six songs (including "Lucky Man," "From the Beginning," "Knife-Edge" and "Paper Blood") during the shows on video screens flanking the stage, with Palmer playing along live in the center. His current trio, Carl Palmer's ELP Legacy, will also perform, as well as enhance some of the ELP songs — most notably a portion of the "Karn Evil 9" suite from 1973's Brain Salad Surgery album. "On that particular night at the Royal Albert Hall we only played a section of ['1st Impression, Pt. 2'], the front section up to the first verse, and then at the point of the keyboard solo, we stopped and went into something else," he explains. "So now, where the keyboard section was meant to start but didn't, that's where my band will take over. It'll be almost 50-50 between the two."

Palmer says that putting the show together was emotional at first. Both Emerson and Lake died in 2016 — Emerson by suicide on March 11 at the age of 71, and Lake on Dec. 7 of pancreatic cancer at 69. "Seeing them on film, playing their very best and looking great, yeah, sure it was emotional," Palmer acknowledges. "It touched me, that's for sure. But after spending all this time [on the show], I'm kind of through with the emotional bit, if you see what I mean. I'm down to the practicalities of getting it right for those two guys. That's the most important thing for me." Palmer has the backing of both men's estates, and he's also confident that Emerson and Lake "would have loved this because they were big technology freaks."

Palmer is viewing the upcoming tour as a trial run for the concept and is holding off on scheduling more at the moment. "We're getting offers," he says. "There was an offer from Switzerland a few weeks back, and we had one from Israel come in. But I'm accepting nothing else at the moment. I want to play the 10 dates, iron out any gremlins that might be there, make sure it's all as good as what I want and also see what the American public thinks about it. It's taken a bit of time to get to this, so we'll see how it goes, and if it goes well, then I'm sure there will be more."

Yes Announce ‘Royal Affair Tour’ With Asia, John Lodge, Carl Palmer

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Yes are hitting the road this summer with a prog rock superstar-bill featuring John Lodge of the Moody Blues, Carl Palmer’s ELP Legacy with guest vocalist Arthur Brown and Asia. They’re calling it the Royal Affair Tour . “Yes is delighted to headline this celebration of British music,” Yes guitarist Steve Howe said in a statement, “which has been so warmly received in America over the past five decades.”

The Yes saga has gotten a bit complicated since former members Jon Anderson, Trevor Rabin and Rick Wakeman put their own Yes on the road in 2016. That project, however, is on indefinite hiatus and this is the Steve Howe incarnation of Yes with Geoff Downes on keyboards, Billy Sherwood on bass, Jon Davison on lead vocals and Alan White and Jay Schellen on drums. According to the press release, their set will “honor the memory of Yes members Chris Squire and Peter Banks.”

Asia has been fronted by Billy Sherwood since the death of singer John Wetton in 2017. On this tour former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal will take the place of guitarist Sam Coulson. Founding member Steve Howe left the group in 2013, but he will be playing with them for at least some of their set on this tour. And since Asia keyboardist Geoff Downes is also in Yes, that means that half the current Yes lineup will be pulling double duty in Asia.

Asia drummer Carl Palmer is the sole surviving member of the Seventies prog supergroup Emerson, Lake and Palmer. His group Carl Palmer’s ELP Legacy plays the band’s music. They will be joined on this tour by Arthur Brown, best remembered as the frontman of the Sixties psychedelic rock band The Crazy World of Arthur Brown.

John Lodge has been a key member of the Moody Blues since 1966, but the group has been on a break this year and he’s been touring solo. His set is heavy on Moody Blues classics like “I’m Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)” and “Ride My See-Saw,” but he doesn’t play their classic “Nights In White Satin” since that features his bandmate Justin Hayward on lead vocals.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Yes drummer Alan White has only been able to play during a small portion of the band’s set in recent years due to back problems. But he’s missed very few shows, and on this tour he’ll also be paying tribute to John Lennon. He played drums for Lennon on Imagine and the Live Peace in Toronto 1969 concert.

Former Yes lead singer Jon Anderson is on a solo tour in support of his new LP 1,000 Hands , but he recently told Rolling Stone that he hopes the band will reunite at some point soon. “I’m very open to it,” he said. “It’s been 50 years now. You think something has got to happen. To me, a great album has to be made. That’s what I think. I don’t know how it’s going to be made, but the final Yes event should happen. I’ve talked to a couple of people about it and they get it. I really want to do this.”

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
