I hear that train a comin’!

The scenic railroad was rebuilt in 1974 and operates daily, summertime tours from Virginia City to historic Gold Hill and also offers weekend tours on the new extended route from Carson City to Virginia City using century old, ornate, open and closed passenger cars- powered by hard working steam and heritage diesel locomotives. The Virginia & Truckee Railroad is the most famous of all American Short Line railroads. Construction began in 1869 and in the ensuing 74 years the busy mountain railroad hauled millions of dollars in gold and silver ore from the mines deep below Virginia City. As many as 45 trains a day departed from Virginia City for Gold Hill, Silver City, Carson City and Reno where trains such as the “Lighting Express” connected with the newly constructed transcontinental railroad. The V & T was later extended to Minden, Nevada.

The Polar Express train aboard V&T returns to Carson City for the 2021 holiday season

117933-allaboardforpolar.jpg

Prepare your pajamas as V&T Railway is celebrating the return of The Polar Express Train Ride in Carson City this 2021 holiday season. After taking a year off due to the pandemic, the railway is now selling tickets to this immersive family-oriented experience at Eastgate Depot.

Popular dates and times are expected to fill quickly, but seats are now available for departures beginning Nov. 19, 2021, and continuing through Dec. 24, 2021. Tickets are available at vtrailway.com and guests are encouraged to book soon as this beloved holiday tradition is expected to sell out.

“V&T Railway Commission is so excited to bring back this holiday tradition in a safe and clean environment. We all missed the presence of The Polar Express Train Ride last year and you could feel it in the region,” said David Peterson, Commission Chair. “This year’s train will continue the beloved ride to The North Pole and you can expect to see all your favorite characters once again.”

The adventure comes to life when the train departs for a round-trip journey to the North Pole led by a cast of talented actors. Set to the sounds of the motion picture soundtrack, passengers will relive the magic of the classic story as they are whisked away on The Polar Express for a one-hour trip to meet Santa.

Once on board, the conductor will work his way through the coach and punch golden tickets before hot chocolate and a delicious cookie are served by dancing chefs. Passengers then read along with the classic children’s book, The Polar Express, by Chris Van Allsburg.

Santa and his helpers board the train to greet passengers and each guest is given the first gift of Christmas. During the trip, characters on each car lead fantastic onboard entertainment — just like in the film! Each guest will take home a keepsake sleigh bell and souvenir golden ticket in addition to the wonderful memories made on this magical trip. Just like the kids in the book, families are encouraged to wear their pajamas for the ride!

The ride offers three different car experiences: Coach Car, a new Deluxe Coach Table Car and VIP Car. Also new this year is a private room in the Deluxe Coach Table Car offering a private experience for up to 15 guests. Masks are required while onboard and inside the train depot per government regulations.

Ticketing is tiered with standard rates Nov. 19 through Dec. 16, 2021, and premium dates starting Dec. 17, 2021, and running through Dec. 24, 2021. Tickets start at just $35 for children and range up to $85 per person, based on date and selected passenger car. Exact dates, times, and fares are available by visiting vtrailway.com.

V&T Railway is seeking energetic and animated actors, actresses and singers to be a part of the magic. Those interested may attend a casting call in Carson City at Adams Hub located at 111 W. Proctor Street, Carson City NV. Casting call dates are Tues., Sept. 28, and Wed., Sept. 29, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Performers only need attend one date but must stay for the entire three-hour period. Those under the age of 18 must have a parent/guardian attend for the entirety of the entire casting call.

Your Guide to the Carson City Polar Express Train Ride

carson city train tour

Have you or your kids ever wanted to experience The Polar Express story in real life on a historic railway? Now you have your opportunity in Carson City, Nevada. Up until December 23, Carson City’s V&T Railway is hosting numerous rides from Carson City to Virginia City to recreate the experience of The Polar Express holiday classic.

Train rides set off from Thursday through Saturday throughout the holiday season, starting at 5 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Guests can choose between four accommodations on board, including a VIP Parlor Car, a VIP Private Room, a Deluxe VIP Private Table and Coach seating. Prices and amenities vary and are explained in detail on the V&T Railway website .

Regardless of your type of ticket, both adults and children will be encouraged to dress in their pajamas to enjoy caroling and a narration of Chris Van Allsburg’s classic, The Polar Express , by the jolly crew members dressed in historic clothing. What’s more, mugs of hot chocolate and a holiday treat will be provided, along with a gift from Santa and his helpers as he makes his way throughout the train cars to spend time talking with everyone.

carson city train tour

The historic train will wind slowly up toward the equally historic town of Virginia City through the barren hillsides, which may very well be sprinkled — or covered — with snow this time of year, making for a scenic backdrop to the live storytelling. The conductor will shout all aboard right on time, inclement weather or not, so out-of-towners should make sure to leave plenty of cushion in their schedule, given northern Nevada’s erratic winter weather.

After an hour-and-a-half ride, the train stops in Virginia City before returning back to Carson City, for about a three-and-a-half-hour journey total — so be prepared for a trip on the longer side if you are taking the little ones on this adventure. But it is certainly worth it. You will remember this one for the rest of your lives. Carson City’s Polar Express is one of the best holiday experiences in all of northern Nevada, so make sure to book a ride before the end of the year! Click here to book.

Meet your knowledgeable driver/guide, and head out of South Lake Tahoe aboard your comfortable minibus, whose reclining seats and large windows allow you to relax and enjoy the mountain views on the approximate 1.5-hour drive northeast to Virginia City.

Your route takes you along part of the old Pony Express, the 1860s trail that carried mail across the United States, to Genoa, Nevada’s oldest city. Then pass through Carson City, the state capital, and through the historical towns of Silver City and Gold Hill. Throughout your drive, listen to narration from your guide about the region’s geology, native wildlife, vegetation and, of course, Wild West history.

VC 11

As you arrive in Virginia City, your guide will tell you about how the town sprang up around Comstock Lode, the first major silver deposit discovered in the US. You’ll be dropped off at the Virginia & Truckee Railroad station to board the train for your 6.5-mile (10.5-km) round-trip ride to Gold Hill and back. Learn a bit about the history of the railroad, which was built in 1869 to transport supplies to Comstock Lode.

Back in Virginia City, you have 2.5 hours of free time to explore the town however you wish. Walk through the historic district, a US National Historic Landmark, where cute Main Street is lined with 19th-century western-style buildings, including an opera house and old saloons. Perhaps visit a couple of museums, such as the Mark Twain Museum or Firemen’s Museum, the courthouse, the opera house or the Mackay Mansion (all entrance fees and activities at your own expense). Have lunch at one of the local restaurants (own expense). When your time in Virginia City is up, return to your minibus for the drive back to South Lake Tahoe, where your tour ends

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Cool Cruiser

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

5,000+ Club

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

3 hassle-free L.A. hikes with free and easy parking

Editor’s note: The Wild is all about featuring a variety of exciting voices from SoCal’s outdoors scene. Starting this week, that voice belongs to Laura Randall, a veteran journalist who has written extensively about hiking and the outdoors. She is the author of “60 Hikes/60 Miles: Los Angeles,” now in its third edition, and “Pacific Crest Trail: Southern California.” She has lived all over Los Angeles County and has never failed to find good hiking trails nearby.

Every once in a while I get the itch to flee Los Angeles. To get as far away as possible from the gridlock of the 405, the digital billboards, the soul-crushing drives around LAX. I’ve found the easiest way to do that is a local day hike.

You are reading The Wild newsletter

You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times.

But even hiking here can be frustrating, complicated and, yes, expensive. Some parking lots near trailheads charge as much as $12 a day. A few years ago, Rancho Palos Verdes introduced an online parking reservation system with a head-spinning number of restrictions and time limits near the popular Portuguese Bend Reserve. And the L.A. City Council recently announced stricter parking regulations for nonresidents in the dense area surrounding Runyon Canyon.

That’s why my criteria for these mini-getaways are strict: They must be easy to navigate without a lot of confusing spur trails, be outside of areas where weather-related closures are common and — most crucially — offer abundant, free parking. The sooner I can drive to a trailhead and get out of the car, the sooner I can have a welcome respite from the chaos of city life.

In my 25 years of living and hiking in L.A., I’ve collected a handful of go-to trails that fit this bill. Let me be clear: There are plenty of hikes I love that are worth the aggravation and extra effort. But whenever I need to get away and don’t have time to plan ahead, I pick one from this list.

As the weather improves and hillsides turn lush and green, here are three trails to consider for a spur-of-the-moment escape. Like a late summer visit to the Hollywood Bowl or a barefoot walk on the beach in January with Mt. Baldy in the distance, they are only-in-L.A. experiences that never fail to make me feel lucky to live here.

Wildflowers bloom on a hillside overlooking a populated valley with mountains in the distance.

Beaudry Motorway Loop There are so many things I love about this six-mile loop in northwestern Glendale: easy street parking, a moderately challenging climb to Tongva Peak and views that showcase the best (and sometimes worst) of Los Angeles. On a clear day, you will see the movie studios of Burbank, the downtown L.A. skyline, the less-glamorous northern side of Griffith Park, the Pacific Ocean and even one of the tallest peaks in Orange County.

A human stops to take a picture of the green valley below them. Mountains can be seen in the distance.

You will also see (and hear) the cars on at least three major freeways, the transmitters of iconic L.A. radio station KROQ-FM, the foothill communities of Montrose, La Crescenta and Tujunga and the trails of other mountain ranges that appear (deceivingly) close enough to touch. Reaching the peak always takes a little longer than anticipated. But that’s just what you want from a good hike: the feeling that you have really earned those views upon arriving at the top.

A bench with pink polka dots looks out to rocky hills and mountains.

Rocky Peak Trail Don’t be put off by the trailhead’s proximity to the 118 Freeway as you start this five-mile out-and-back hike at Simi Valley’s eastern edge. The traffic noise disappears quickly and you are rewarded with spectacular mountain views and otherworldly rock formations. You’ll see other hikers (and some mountain bikers) on this trail, but thanks to its wide, dusty fire road, it rarely feels crowded. There are plenty of boulders right off the trail, perfect for a lunch pit stop or a view lookout. The trailhead has a small parking lot, with overflow parking a short walk away across the freeway bridge.

A trail leads to a bright green valley

Sara Wan Trailhead at Corral Canyon This shadeless Malibu coast trail is best enjoyed in the morning before beach crowds show up. There’s a small fee-based parking lot but also ample free parking along Pacific Coast Highway. Most people opt to follow the 2.5-mile loop counter-clockwise, but either way it’s a lovely introduction to Malibu’s canyons and coastal bluffs. Right now, Corral Creek is flowing, the area is exploding with wildflowers and the intoxicating aroma of sage, fennel and salt is in the air. If you time your visit right, you can end your hike just as Malibu Seafood is opening for the day and cap off your excursion by enjoying a lobster roll while staring out at the Pacific.

A sunny valley seen from the top of a mountain, left, and a bike repair station next to a Hummingbird Trail pole.

3 things to do

Docents lead guided tours at Bixby Marshland in Carson.

1. Tour a marsh teeming with wildlife in Carson Once part of a much larger wetlands environment known as Bixby Slough, Bixby Marshland was restored by the Los Angeles County Sanitation Departments and opened to the public in 2009. Now, it’s an unlikely haven of green space tucked in the shadows of the 110 Freeway and home to herons, hawks, ducks, tree frogs, willow and sycamore trees and more. It’s open Saturday for guided and self-guided tours from 8 a.m. to noon. There will also be programs that focus on teaching, healing and entertaining led by Indigenous people, local performance artists and naturalists. No reservations are necessary, and the paved paths are wheelchair-accessible. For more information, visit www.lacsd.org .

2. Practice yoga on the sand in Hermosa Beach The warrior pose is even more rejuvenating when you’re staring at the ocean with crashing waves as your soundtrack. Hermosa Beach kicks off a month of free mindful yoga classes on Monday as part of the Beach Cities Free Fitness series. Classes are led by certified instructors the first three Mondays in May from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. You’ll meet in front of Scotty’s restaurant, 1100 the Strand, near the Hermosa Beach Pier. Walk-ups are welcome, but you can register in advance at www.bchd.org .

3. Go stargazing on Mt. Wilson The venerable Mt. Wilson Observatory kicks off its warm weather season Saturday with an evening lecture on Edwin Hubble and the dawn of modern cosmology presented by retired Jet Propulsion Laboratory astrophysicist Tim Thompson. Guests can then observe the skies through the observatory’s 60- and 100-inch telescopes, as well as additional ones provided by the Los Angeles Astronomical Society. Tickets are $50 and food trucks will be on hand. Or bring your own picnic to enjoy under the stars. The event runs from 5:30 to 11:30 p.m., and you can find tickets at mountwilson.edu .

The must-read

President Biden, First Lady Jill Biden and chief groundskeeper Dale Haney plant a tree at the White House.

The first house I lived in here in Los Angeles sat on a canyon that had a couple of oak trees with canopies so wide that an entire class of kindergarteners could fit under them. My husband and I were advised by our neighbors to treat them with respect and care: never overwater them and prune lightly, if at all, and only during certain times of the year.

I thought of those majestic trees when I read Laurie Wayburn’s Arbor Day opinion piece in The Times about the important role that older, more natural forests play in the climate crisis and reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Planting new trees, while well-intentioned, Wayburn notes, doesn’t have nearly the impact on carbon sink as properly caring for the forests we already have. There are so many trails in Los Angeles with old-growth native trees that provide shade, tranquility and joy for hikers who approach them on scorching-hot days. Next time you see one, take a moment to appreciate not only its beauty but also its role as a climate-change-fighting powerhouse.

Happy adventuring,

A few more tips to make any hike as hassle-free as possible: Get your backpack ready the night before. Fill your water receptacle and put it in the fridge and make sure you have sunscreen, snacks and a first-aid kit ready to go. The earlier you can leave, the better your chances of avoiding traffic and parking headaches and achieving that goal of getting away from it all.

I’m excited to share my own experiences covering travel and the outdoors in Southern California. Rizhsky railway station and moscow railway museum.

Rizhsky Railway Station (July 2013)

Rizhsky Railway Station is one of Moscow's nine railway stations.  It was opened in 1901 and was originally known as Vindavsky Railway Station after the Latvian city of Venta which was then known as Vindava.  It was later renamed Baltiysky, after the Baltic, and the Rzhevsky, after the city of Rzhev, before finally becoming Rizhsky after the Latvian capital of Riga.  The city serves long distance trains heading to Riga (including the Latvia-Express) and to the Pskov Region.  In addition suburban trains also head in the direction of Volokolamsk and Istra.

Moscow Railway Museum at Rizhsky Railway Station

carson city train tour

Just next to Rizhsky Railway Station is Moscow Railway Museum at Rizhsky Railway Station which is a branch of the Moscow Railway Museum which was opened in 2004.  Unlike the main museum outside Paveletsky Railway Station, this branch is predominantly an outdoor museum exhibiting old types of trains.  In total there are over 60 exhibits including 12 steam engines, 10 diesel locomotives, seven electric trains and three wagons.  Many of the museum's exhibits are often used in films and television programmes.

Ticket prices for the Trans-Siberian Railway also depend on the current ruble exchange rate.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

  • Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
  • Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
  • How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
  • What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
  • What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
  • What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.
