A Perfect Travel Guide of Chaukori for Tourists & Travelers

Shefali Joshi

Have you heard about a place called Chaukori in Uttarakhand? Or are you planning to travel to Chaukori in Kumaon on your next Himalayan trip? Well, this Chaukori travel guide will help you get answers to all your questions about planning a memorable Kumaon trip.

Chaukori, an offbeat place in Kumaon, Uttarakhand

Chaukori is a colorful little hill station of the Pithoragarh, Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. This sleepy town is shaped like a bowl (hence the name) and enveloped by Himalayan peaks all around. Fruit orchards, diverse flora-fauna, and lush green dense forests of pines, oaks, and rhododendrons define the landscape. However, its fame comes from the tea gardens, which were established by the British, thanks to the pleasant climate.

Let us explore this comprehensive travel guide of Chaukori and ensure you know about this offbeat Kumaon place like a local.

Let's quickly dive into the details:

Chaukori Travel Guide

Famous for its tea gardens set up by the British, Chaukori is often called heaven in Kumaon by travelers. This peaceful little town has enchanting views of the Himalayas . While the Nanda Devi, Chaukhanba, and Trishul dot the panoramic views, this place firmly establishes itself as a must-visit offbeat place in Uttarakhand .

Why Visit Chaukori

Flying completely under the radar, it is one of those destinations that is completely untouched by tourism and the crowds. If seclusion and tranquillity appease you, then look no further than Chaukori in Kumaon. This dreamy village is the perfect recipe for an amazing weekend, which will surely turn dreamers into artists.

Also, the most beautiful sunrise and sunsets await you here at Chaukori. The magical views of the Himalayas during both sunset and sunrise will leave your mouth wide open. The nights are pleasant, and you’ll witness the opening of other worlds in the night skies. There’s something about the night sky that is so familiar yet so unique from each vantage point in the hills.

View from Chaukori KMVN

Nestled in the Pithoragarh District of Uttarakhand, Chaukori height is perched at 2010 meters. Proud and mighty Himalayan peaks surround this sleepy little town of Kumaon region. To its north is Tibet , while Terai neighbors the south. The Mahakali River runs along with the little town.

Chaukori Weather

Summer months are pleasant and winter months experience some snowfall in Chaukori. It is one of the places of Uttarakhand near Delhi to experience snowfall .

But, overall, Chaukori temperature is very pleasant and a delight to the senses. Expect a maximum of 30 degrees Celcius in the summer season and the coldest winter months experience around -5 to 10 degrees Celcius.

Best time to visit Chaukori

When visiting hills, it is always advisable to avoid the monsoon season, especially if you’re a novice. Months of April – June, and September – November are heaven-like and make for the perfect atmosphere to soak in the rays, the views, and calm your soul. Also, it is a fair warning that sometimes, in the summer months, forest fires may occur that can cause a dampener to your route.

Hence, the best time to visit Chaukori is anytime between June to October except for the monsoon months. I also like to travel to Chaukori in November – December, particularly year-end when you find rush everywhere else in the Uttarakhand and Himachal .

Perfect Chaukori Itinerary

With a lot of things to offer and yet not much written about the place, You can make a Chaukori trip one of the two ways – either you go where nature calls – or you put in some (very loose) structure to your thoughts.

I believe the below itinerary for the Chaukori trip will help pointing you out in the right direction. Hope this helps!

If you have enough days in hand, then you can always check my most recommended itinerary for the Kumaon region .

Day 0 – Let the journey begin

Leave from Delhi towards Chaukori by your chosen mode of travel. Try reaching as early in the morning the next day as possible, to fully utilize your time when you visit this place (which involves a huge amount of chilling!).

Day 1 – Chaukori Sightseeing

The natural beauty that surrounds Chaukori cannot be missed and should be uniquely fitted to you. So pick a trail and head on out and explore the in-and-around of Chaukori. Also, the village offers awe-inspiring views of Trishul, Chaukhamba, Nanda-Devi, Nanda Kot, and Panchachuli . So, don’t forget to soak in the sun and the views.

Choose a good scenic spot for a spectacular sunset. Personally, I would suggest heading out to the Hanging Rocks for your evening stroll. The trek is relatively short- less than a KM long, but the views are surreal. You might be lucky and would be able to sport Musk Deer, which is extremely rare. You can push it further, carry foldable chairs, food and make a whole picnic out there. Chances are, you’ll have the entire place to yourself.

There is a hike to a Musk Deer Conservation Park that can also be taken to learn and spot some Musk Deers.

Travel Tip : If you are planning a trip to Himachal instead of Uttrakhand, you can check these 12 must-visit offbeat places in Himachal .

Hiking to Musk Deer Park

Day 2 – Head out on to the Tea Gardens or Patal Bhuvaneshwar

One of the very few places in Kumaon that has luscious green tea gardens, Chaukori does no disappoint. The acres of tea leaves with the aroma wafting through the air is quite a vivid memory to hold.

Established by the British during the Raj, you’ll be transported back to yesteryear charm when in Chaukori. With the birds chirping in the background and the sun kissing the snow-capped mountain peaks, you can easily spend an entire day just breezing through the gardens.

If you’re in the mood to visit some temples nearby, there are a tonne of choices. Villagers are usually happy and helpful and can fill you in on the histories and mythologies of the place.

Day trip to Patal Bhuvaneshwar from Chaukori – Alternate Plan

You can also plan to visit Patal Bhuvaneshwar on this day in case you covered Tea gardens on the first day. It is a 1.5 hr drive from Chaukori, about 38 km away.

Patal Bhuvaneshwar is a majestic limestone cave temple which is about 160 meters long and 90 feet deep from the point of entrance. If you are into mythology or geology, you will love the visit to this cave.

Magical view from Patal Bhuvaneshwar

Day 3 – Time to head back

After soaking in a new sunrise, and some hearty breakfast, it is now time to bid adieu to this little town and head back to Delhi or continue exploring the Kumaon region.

Can I travel from Chaukori to Munsiyari?

You can easily plan to travel further from Chaukori to Munsiyari if you have a couple of days in hand. It will take about 4 hrs of a drive to cover a distance of 98 km between Chaukori and Munsiyari.

Do not plan a day trip to Munsiyari as it will be hectic. Rather start from Chaukori in the morning to stay overnight at Munsiyari. You can either stay the next day in Munsiyari or come back. When traveling between Munsiyari to Chaukori, you can stop at Birthi Waterfall as well.

Is there any waterfall near Chaukori?

Birthi waterfall near Chaukori is about 63 km that comes on the way to Munsiyari from Chaukori. If you are planning a trip, Munsiyari is further 35 km from the Birthi waterfall .

Where to stay in Chaukori

The trusty KMVN Chaukori , of course, offers the best views with a watchtower to witness the sunrise and sunset. Otherwise, among the rest of the Chaukori hotels, Ojaswi Resort has insanely gorgeous views and spacious rooms with an adjacent beautiful garden! Hotel Himshikhar is a simple, budget-friendly place and is situated right in the Tea Garden Area, making it easily accessible. While the rooms might be a bit dated, the washrooms are decent, and the in-room dining is round the clock!

Also, if you are up for new experiences, then you must venture out into homestays – and support local tourism. Check out the views from Passpas Homestay in the village. There are many other homestays, which don’t have an online presence, so you’re your sense of adventure take over and head out and speak with some people that might be happy to open their homes to you!

Views in the night at KMVN

Where to eat

A small hamlet, Chaukori still provides decent food – in the resorts. Do try the local delicacies. Chaukori is unique in that most of the tourism is run by the residents. Hence, they are far more hospitable and want you to have the best experience. If you request, I am certain most residents would happily cook the local food for you to relish.

Otherwise, Chaukori KMVN serves food as well in their restaurant.

You should always carry your water bottle and refill it as many times as you need water. It will not only keep you hydrated always, but you will also help in saving the Himalayas from plastic garbage. Remember, every tiny step counts and your step in this direction can help save the Himalayas too !! 🙂 🙂

Kumaon region in Uttarakhand has many villages spread over different districts from where you can get a spectacular 180-degree view of snow-capped Himalayan mountain peaks. Some of them are frequently visited, and some are getting popularised very fast. Chaukori is one such destination that has had a KMVN rest house for a long time, but not many tourists visit this place often, at least not the number that visit Nainital, Kausani, Ranikhet or Mukteswar.

As a Himalayan lover, if you want to isolate yourself in nature and enjoy the magic of light on Himalayan peaks throughout the day, Chaukori is perfect. The location of Chaukori is such that it seems a perfect balcony for viewing mighty Himalayan peaks closely. If you can manage the travel time of 6-7 hours from Nainital, Chaukori offers the best view compared to all other popular places in Kumaon.

Chaukori Uttarakhand | Weekend Getaway from Delhi

Photo of Let's Expresso

If you are not the hustle bustle type and totally dislike the man over man hill stations, then this blog is for you. Today, I write about Chaukori Uttarakhand - tiny hill station in the lap of Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand India. Surrounded by lofty peaks, its a delight to see the western Himalayan range in the Kumaon division in full glory and might. On a clear day, the peaks shine bright with aura and command. The hill station is 175 km ahead of Nainital and is a spectacular Weekend getaway from Delhi.

Chaukori Uttarakhand is 10 km from Berinag, another little hill station. The spectacular view of Nanda Devi and Nanda Kot are a mesmerising vision to the eyes. The snowy peaks remind time and again the power of nature and bountiful abundance.

How to reach Chaukori Uttarakhand?

By road. One can drive down from Delhi by road.

By train + road. One can take the train till Kathgodam. From there by road for the remaining journey.

The breakup of my journey:

Day1 : We had an easy start at about 9 in the morning. I would recommend an early start to avoid all the traffic of Delhi. We reached Haldwani by 4 afternoon and had to call it a day due to heavy rains. The route ahead to Nainital was choked because of a landslide. We stayed the night at Comfort Inn Saurabh , a nice cozy hotel with good food and service. I totally recommend this hotel for its services, cleanliness and being value for money. With heavy rainfall on the outside, this stop gap arrangement was a delight to sleep over.

Day2: We started at 8 in the morning and head straight to our destination. With quick chai and nimbu paani stops, we targeted reaching Chaukori Uttarakhand before sunset. The route has enough sign boards to guide + GPS/Google maps are great guides for the way. We took the route via Almora, bypassing Nainital totally.

Route details: Delhi- Moradabad- Rampur- Rudrapur- Haldwani- Bhowali- Almora- Binsar- Bageshwar- Chaukori- Berinag- Almora- Bhowali- Bhimtal- Haldwani- Rudrapur- Rampur- Moradabad- Delhi.

Filling stations on the way: Available all the way till Chaukori.

By 5 evening, we reached the tiny village of Chaukori, away from all the city madness and quiet and calming and totally therapeutic.

That’s me…Give your phone a rest over on the trip (unlike me) ????

Where to stay in Chaukori?

KMVN (Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam) has a tourist guest house which is well maintained. Do not expect a 2 star or a 3 star resort but at that height and remoteness, KMVN resort is well maintained with all the basic facilities. You can check the website for all the details

We checked in at our cottage room that had spectacular view of the peaks. The chai- pakora evening snack delighted like heaven in mouth. The evening ran slow and we tried getting one with the stillness. After a timely dinner and some TV watching, the good night sleep paved in.

Day 3: Breathe in the peaks of Nanda Devi and Panchchuli peaks. Chaukori Uttarakhand is in the majestic proximity of the Himalayas for a larger than life view of the peaks. Don't miss the fabulous sunrise and sunset, it's a treat to watch. This small hill station is an ideal resort for nature lovers who look out for unspoilt land that is bestowed with abundance of clean air and calm surroundings. Chaukori has abundance of fruit orchards and jungles of Pines and Oaks.

Attempting Star Trails

The place is a photographer’s delight!

Photo of Chaukori Uttarakhand | Weekend Getaway from Delhi by Let's Expresso

Not to forget, if you are a photographer, you will adore the place. Whether still photography or a time lapse, fly away in the clouds or get lost in the Milky Way. This is another reason to make Chaukori Uttarakhand a preferred Weekend getaway near Delhi.

There are ample hiking options around. You can check with the locals and they will guide you. Patal Bhuvneshwar is 38km from Chaukori and has a temple within a cave which is believed to be the abode of 33 crore Gods. Berinag is 10 kms from Chaukori and has beautiful tea gardens.

Well, for me... apart from gazing and lazying, there was such a me time to think and analyse life and give some meaning to it.

It’s not a painting…

You have to be lucky to see this.

Photo of Chaukori Uttarakhand | Weekend Getaway from Delhi by Let's Expresso

Day 4: The pulling back started. After checking out at ease, we started retreating by 10 to reach Bhimtal by late afternoon. We stayed at Aamod resort and relaxed through the evening.

Day 5: Almost a non stop ride with a quick chai and lunch break, we managed to reach Delhi by late afternoon...aah Home Sweet Home.

My memories of Chaukori Uttarakhand flash time and again and if you are looking for a weekend getaway from Delhi, do give consideration to this tiny little hill station that will give you enough and more reasons to come back again and again.

P.S: The trip requires a long 4 day weekend. Club another day to do it at ease. I did this trip from 15th Aug'14- 19th Aug'14, monsoon season. There was a huge envelope of cloud on the peaks, so couldn't be seen clearly.

Places to Visit in Chaukori – Local Sightseeing in Chaukori

trishul peak

In this article, I will provide information on places to visit in Chaukori. If you are planning a trip to this lesser-known hidden gem of Uttarakhand, the list below can help you plan your local sightseeing in Chaukori.

Chaukori is a quiet and tiny little hill station sitting located in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. Until a few years ago, it was just a tiny village, one among many of Uttarakhand. It is only recently that this place has started receiving some tourist attention, after the efforts of Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) to develop it as a destination.

As such, there is really no long list of tourist places in Chaukori. The natural beauty of the village and the view it offers of the surrounding Western Himalayan range is by far its biggest attraction. When you are here, the only thing to do is to relax, enjoy the views, and take a walk. I am serious, that is all there is to do in Chaukori.

But with that being said, if you were planning to stay here for a few days, there are plenty of places to visit around Chaukori that you can cover. These are all located within a range of a few kilometers and can be visited as a day-long excursion.

For more details on how to reach, where to stay, the best time to visit, please take a look at How to Plan your Trip to Chaukori .

Quick Navigation

Places to visit in Chaukori

Let us first take a look at what you can see or do in the village itself.

Amazing view of the Western Himalayan Range

The best thing to see in Chaukori is a view of the distant peaks like Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot, Trishul, Raj Rambha, and the five peaks of the Panchchuli group. On a clear day, when there are no clouds, you can see all of these mountains clearly from Chaukori.

places to visit in chaukori

Natural Beauty

The scenery of the village is really like none other. If you visited here during the monsoon season or just after, the lush green valleys will surely inspire the awe out of you. During the winter season, in January especially, the entire region turns white and becomes a sight to behold.

Sunrise & Sunset View

Chaukori is among my favorite places to get an astounding sunrise view. Make sure you get out of the bed early and chose a spot of your liking. The KMVN rest house has a watchtower that can be a good spot.

Wait for the sun to come up from behind the mountains and witness a sight that you will remember for a long time. If you missed it in the morning, you will get an equally beautiful sight in the evening.

sunrise in chaukori

Tea Gardens

Chaukori is also known for its Tea Gardens. There are in fact a couple of resorts that are built inside the tea gardens. Even if you do not stay at the resort, you can still take a walk through the tea gardens.

Also Read:  Harsil – A COMPLETE Travel Guide and Itinerary

Hanging Rocks

The entire Chaukori town offers great views but if you want them to get even better, you should take a hike to Hanging Rocks. No, there are no hanging rocks here. It is just a viewpoint at the top of the mountain, located after a short uphill trek of about 800 meters from Chaukori.

It gives an awesome panoramic view and from here, on a clear day, you can view as many as 13 mountain peaks including Trishul, Nanda Devi, Nanda Devi East, Nanda Devi kot, Mrigthuni, Panwali Dwar, Raj Rambha, Panchachuli Peaks and Anapurana range in Nepal.

And that is pretty much it. This is all there is to see in Chaukori itself. If you do a Google search, you will get articles by travel companies on their websites giving you a long list of places of tourist interest in Chaukori. But that is not correct. Those are just SEO designed articles targeting that particular keyword and will only misguide you.

When you come to Chaukori, you really should set your expectations right. You do not come to a place like this to go through an endless list of sightseeing and things to do. For that, you go to a place like Shimla or Manali. If you are coming to Chaukori, your main idea should be to visit an offbeat destination, see the natural beauty of Uttrakhand, relax, slow down life for a while, and rejuvenate yourself.

road trip to chaukori

Places to Visit around Chaukori

If you were going to be in Chaukori for a day or two, then just focus on what I mentioned above. But if you were in the region for a few more days, listed below are some other places you can cover.

Kali Taal Waterfalls / Tunkhola Waterfalls

If you want to add a waterfall to your trip, then you should head to Kali Taal, also spelled as Kalital. It is located in a jungle-like setting and is among the best places to visit near Chaukori. Also known as Tunkhola Waterfalls, it is not very large in size but not small either, see the picture below. If you were here after or during the monsoon season, you will find it swelled with water.

kali taal waterfall

Also known as Dharamgarh, this place is famous as the final resting place of Sarla Behan, one of the lady followers of Mahatma Gandhi and its tea gardens. It is located at a distance of about 10 kilometers from Chaukori. It is a very serene and calm place that can also serve as a good viewpoint.

Tea Gardens in Berinag

You will cross Berinag about 10 kilometers before Chaukori, if you were coming from Haldwani. It was previously known as Bedinag and is famous for its snake temples and beautiful tea gardens. In fact, Berinag Tea was once upon a time a highly sought after tea and the town was home to one of the best tea gardens in the country. Take a look at The History of Berinag Tea for more details.

There is also an ancient Nagmandir in Berinag that you can visit while you were in the town.

Musk Deer Park

There are only 2 parks in India where musk deers are bred and kept for research. One of them is near Chaukori. You can either trek to the park or drive. If you trek, it will take you about 2 hours to get there. The motorable road goes till the gate and after that, you will have to walk in the park. Patal Bhuvaneshwar

There is no way that you can miss visiting Patal Bhuvaneshwar if you were visiting Chaukori. It is a limestone cave temple, 160 meters long and 90 feet deep from the point of entrance. It is located in the village Bhubneshwar and is believed to enshrine Lord Shiva himself.

The temple is at a distance of about 38 kilometers and can be a day-long excursion from the village. I actually visited here while on my way back. We took a detour from Berinag and made a short visit to Patal Bhuvaneshwar. The motorable road ends half a kilometer away from the cave entrance after which, you will have to descend nearly 100 steps in the narrow cave.
