Why Choose Tailor-Made China Tours for Schools

Why Choose Tailor-Made China Tours for Schools

With an unparalleled wealth of cultures, lifestyles, history and arts, China is always the odds-on favorite for schools and educational institutes alike. Experience is di-verse: standing in awe at the world wonders, learning mandarin or some traditional arts, outdoor activities and inter-school camps; so many ways to make China your own oyster.

A well-cut educational trip to China would not only bring about awe-inspiring sightseeing, but also and certainly the most importantly, a life-impacting opportunity for the younger generation to learn outside their classrooms. As for the schools’ standing, planning is the most vital step.

What Does the Market Scape Look Like for School Trips in China

The industry of educational travels started as early as last century when the country open up for more communication with the western world. According to governmental laws back then, international schools were only allowed to book tours from large-scale, nation-run and chain travel agents under the brand of China International Travel Services (CITS).

The first patch of classic China school trips included Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai due to certain political and transportation-related reasons. Although most formerly-nation-owned travel agents have gone private, such cookie-cutter itineraries are still their solution for all. Minimizing the changes (what we consider as flexibility or specific interests) of any fragment of the trip ensures them the possibility to get better prices from local suppliers (Nobody likes trouble after all).

Luckily, things are easier in present: all legit travel agents, regardless the scale, are capable to craft and sell trips to schools abroad. And more destinations (such as Tibet and some regions in Xinjiang) and experiences are brought forth to your table. Making it unique is possible, yeah!

Why A Tailor-Made China Tour Should Be Your Choice

The primary focus of a school trip is to connect with the reality. The things that stu-dents have learnt inside classroom are brought to life. Youngsters benefit from hands-on field activities that, in return, boost their passion to learn and practice more. However, each school has their different goals that shall be the ONLY compass to coordinate the trip planning and operating.

china tour school

If you are launching a field trip for human geography study, Guizhou, Yunnan and Guangxi for example, should be included; a 3-day mandarin-learning camp at a pri-vate language institute helps better for students who major in Chinese as their second foreign language, rather than just a one-hour class. China never lacks possibilities yet it is a keen insight that makes the difference.

Half of the job is done at the planning stage. How this school trip is going to look like is easy to espy only after a few emails between you and the travel agent. With tons of inquiries on a daily basis, it is hard for a traditional travel agent who sales fixed group tours to work their time and focus around you. They might not even have the time for phone calls simply because your daytime is not their working hours. You wouldn’t want to feel neglected, right?

When you are actually in an exotic land like China, staying connected grants you ease at mind and safety for your group. Compared with those agents who refer you only as a booking number or code, a travel agent who specializes in tailor-making services addresses you by the name and tracks everything once you land in China.

There is nothing wrong going with a group tour. It’s always the safest (and sometimes the cheapest) choice if all you want is just flying out to the orient or getting your passport stamped. Consider a private, tailor-made service if your vision exceeds beyond.

Is A Tailor-Made Tour Too Expensive

china tour school

Compared to fixed-departure, tastelessly-planned and shop-entering group tours, yes, a tailor-made tour for school might not look very budget-friendly. Considering what you get from a tailor-made service, however, you may see it as a big “bargain”.

Getting every detail organized can take up at least a couple of weeks to achieve on your own or negotiate with an agent who only sells cookie-cutter tour packages. Such time can be spent on other things that are more important and more suitable for your skillset. In another word, you are paying for China experts’ time and knowledge.

Some great experiences cannot be measured by the money. You are traveling for new experiences that are better presented only with discerning insights. Tailor-made service is focused on your interests, so are these experiences. They deserve to be a little bit more expensive as you are not just a face in the crowd. Better flexibility, exploration opportunities and safety all make the extra penny worthy.

Why should you partner with China Educational Tours (CET)?

china tour school

Over the years, we have come to a recognition that international schools or educational institutes excel at offering field trips and brand-building much better with help from a China-based partner who specializes in customized tours. Rather than a tour-selling travel agent, we would rather be addressed as your partner. We grasp your approach, vision and demands in a snap. Most of our team members used to work at tourism for company expeditions, school trips and incentive holidays for big groups. Being familiar with clients who want a little bit different in their own travels, all it takes just one email to transfer your ideas into our heads.

We value flexibility and exploration. The most remarkable difference between our services and fixed group tours lies in flexibility. This means you will not be rushed around attractions, stuffed in big coaches or, even worse, cheated into shops that camouflage as “museums”. Our moderately-paced itineraries encourage you to be creative and adventurous to discover China’s beauty on your own.

We are China-based expert. Besides landscapes, architectures and artworks you can see and touch, China is a treasure trove full of authentic yet tangible experiences that can only be put forth by those with a keen sense. With more than 5 years of experiences in school tours, our knowledge outmatches those agents who are based abroad and only outsource tours to China. Also, it is dreadful to lead a group of more than 20 children. Our local offices around China mainland and Hong Kong ensure you everything will be under control from the second you land.

china tour school

We are trusted by a great number of international schools and educational facilities. Carefully and thoughtfully studying every case, we have hand-crafted tailor-made tours for over 100 schools and educational institutes. Most of them would come back for a second or even third trip with us. Good words do travel faster than advertisements.

What Other Schools And Educational Institutes Said About Us

Over the past few years, good reviews have piled up and we were rewarded for Certificate of Excellence by TripAvdisor because of 100% 5-star reviews. School trip planners’ experiences with us might shed some light: Thank you Carol Guan for your dedication and help for all the arrangements to make this special Cultural Exchange Student Program a success, once again! This trip was organized for a group of Chinese language learning students from a high school in New Zealand to come for 10 days. … This gave them an opportunity to learn hands-on about Chinese culture and customs, but also to see one of China's minority groups. — Linda, New Zealand

Great education tour of 12 days. We had wonderful tour guides - Michael in Beijing, Jennifer in Guilin, and Jack in Shanghai. All were very knowledgeable, accepting of our group feedback, and flexible with our itinerary when needed. I highly recommend China Educational Tours and would definitely use them in the future. — Robert, USA

A group of 24 8th grade students and 11 chaperones, planned our first trip to China with the hope that future 8th grade students from the same middle school would continue the tradition. Carol was incredibly responsive, explained things thoroughly, and was flexible and patient with all our requests. The 13-day itinerary was a perfect balance of historic sights, experiencing and learning the culture, seeing the amazing scenery, interacting with other students, and offering opportunities for the students to practice Mandarin. — Lisa, Canada

We have worked with some international educational institutes and schools, too name some of them you will find: New Yokr Institute of Technology (NYIT), New York, USA San Fransisco Unified School District, USA Pathfinder K-8 School, Seattle, USA Emmanuel College, Boston, USA Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia Rangitoto College, Auckland, New Zealand Educating Adventures, London, UK Students Horizons, Brisbane, Australia

Experience, explore and educate, make this China trip a precious memory that im-pacts life and provides you different new perspective for the future. Our philosophy is simple: To Know China from real life experience, NOT only from what you read in books. You will be in good hands with China Educational Tours.

School Trips to China

China

School trips to China offer students the opportunity to explore one of the world’s oldest civilisations. There is an unparalleled wealth of culture and history to delight and intrigue students as they discover China’s ancient past in Beijing and its modern, pioneering side in Shanghai.

An educational tour to China offers a diverse range of learning opportunities and is an excellent choice for many school subjects, including Mandarin language , geography , art and business studies .

Why visit China?

Explore the ancient culture.

Whatever your reason for visiting, one of the best things about a school trip to China is the fact that it offers your students the opportunity to explore one of the world’s oldest and most influential cultures.

At the Forbidden City, you’ll explore Chinese hierarchy during Imperial times and the importance of symbolism in Chinese culture.

And you can even learn more about China’s recent history and political culture with a visit to Tiananmen Square.

Bring geography to life

On a geography school trip to China, geographers can see how humans have adapted the landscape to meet their needs and how that, in turn, has affected civilisation.

Throughout history, the Chinese have exploited their natural landscape for human use. The fertile North China Plain offered the best opportunities for agriculture and the wealth that was generated here also meant that the political power centred around this region.

When exports became more important to the Chinese economy, ports like Shanghai began to experience rapid urbanisation as people rushed to the new centres of power and wealth.

Get your students talking

If your students are studying Mandarin, a school trip to China is unmissable. They’ll love the opportunity to explore the Chinese culture through their Mandarin skills.

We can also arrange for your group to visit a local school so that your students can practise speaking Mandarin with people of their own age. And while you’re there, you can all enjoy a calligraphy lesson too!

The Great Wall of China stretches 5,500 miles across northern China, from Shanhaiguan in the eastern province of Hebei, to the western city of Jiayuguan in Gansu province. Construction began in the 3rd century B.C. and continued right up until the 17th century A.D.

This incredible feat of human engineering is a must-see for all who visit China. Although not actually visible from space, the wall is still an impressive structure and reflects the military might of China throughout history. Not only was the wall used to keep enemies out, it was, at various points throughout its history, used for border control and to impose taxes on goods transported along the Silk Road.

The area visited is Mutianyu, a section of the Great Wall of China located in Huairou County, 70 km northeast of central Beijing. The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is connected with Jiankou in the west and Lianhuachi in the east.

Beijing’s Summer Palace is one of the loveliest royal parks you are ever likely to set your eyes on. Created in the 18th century for the imperial family to relax and entertain in, the park is vast and offers a collection of exquisite palaces, gardens and lakes.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Summer Palace can be found in the Haidian district of the city and consists of over 3,000 man-made structures. Some of the most famous attractions are clustered around Kunming Lake, such as the 17-arch bridge, the Bronze Ox and the Marble Boat.

Tiananmen Square is instantly recognisable to all as a symbol of the People’s Republic of China. The gate, after which the square takes its name, was once the entrance to the Imperial City, within which the Forbidden City was located. A huge portrait of Mao Zedong has hung there since 1949.One of the largest public squares in the world, it has actually been extended several times, in order to increase its capacity. With Chairman Mao’s Mausoleum and the Great Hall of the People (China’s Parliament) both located on the edge of the square, as well as its history as the setting for the declaration of the People’s Republic of China, it is no surprise that the square has seen its fair share of historic and political moments. No trip to Beijing is complete without a visit.

The Forbidden City stands in the centre of Beijing as a monument to the city’s imperial history and rich cultural legacy. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, the huge complex lies to the north of Tiananmen Square, covering 180 acres and comprising 980 buildings.

Once the home of the Emperors from the Ming dynasty to the end of the Qing dynasty, the Forbidden City is now home to the Palace Museum. The extensive collection here is derived from that of the Emperors and includes a huge collection of porcelain and jade, as well as the largest collection of pre-Yuan dynasty (1271 – 1368) paintings in China. Also exhibited is a large collection of artefacts from the imperial court, many of which were a part of the daily lives of the Emperors and their households.

Although not a particularly old temple (it was re-built in 1928 after the first temple was destroyed in the revolution that overthrew the Qing dynasty), the architecture of the Jade Buddha Temple is very classical and really stands out in Shanghai, which is generally a very modern city.

The temple is home to three Buddhas. The two originals were the inspiration for the temple itself and are incredibly elegant depictions of Buddha at two of the most important moments of his life: the Sitting Buddha depicts the moment he reached enlightenment and the Recumbent Buddha depicts the moment he achieved nirvana. The temple is also home to many other fantastic examples of Buddhist art, including ancient paintings and sculptures.

The Shanghai Museum is located in People’s Square and, although a modern building, encompasses some of the symbolism prevalent in classical architecture: the round roof, which represents heaven, sits atop the square body, which represents Earth.

The Temple of Heaven is a stunning complex of religious buildings located to the south of the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. Built by the Ming dynasty’s Yongle Emperor to worship Heaven and pray for good harvests, the Temple of Heaven is even larger than the Forbidden City. This is because, as a ‘son of Heaven’, the Emperor could not build himself a larger palace than that which was dedicated to Heaven.

The complex is full of symbolism, even the long wall which surrounds it reflects the relationship between Heaven and Earth; the northern side is semi-circular and slightly elevated, representing Heaven, whilst the lower, southern side is rectangular, representing Earth. There are three main buildings: the iconic Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, which is a triple-gabled circular building in which the Emperor prayed for good harvests, as the name suggests; the Imperial Vault of Heaven, which, although reminiscent of the Hall of Prayer, consists of just one level and is surrounded by an ‘echo wall’ designed to project prayers over large areas; and the Circular Mound Altar, on which the Emperor would pray for favourable weather conditions.

This is a fascinating visit which provides a real insight into Chinese culture.

The Shanghai Bund has dozens of historical buildingslining the Huangpu River, that once housed numerous banks and trading houses from Britain, France, the U.S., Russia, Germany, Japan, The Netherlands and Belgium, as well as the consulates of Russia and Britain, a newspaper, the Shanghai Club and the Masonic Club.

The Bund lies north of the old, walled city of Shanghai. This was initially a British settlement; later the British and American settlements were combined into anInternational Settlement. A building boom at the end of 19th century and beginning of 20th century led to the Bund becoming a major financial hub of East Asia. The former French Bund, east of the walled city was formerly more a working harbourside.By the 1940s the Bund housed the headquarters of many, if not most, of the major financial institutions operating in China, including the "big four" national banks in the Republic of China era. However, with the Communist victory in the Chinese civil war, many of the financial institutions were moved out gradually in the 1950s, and the hotels and clubs closed or converted to other uses. The statues of colonial figures and foreign worthies which had dotted the riverside were also removed. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, with the thawing of economic policy in the People's Republic of China, buildings on the Bund were gradually returned to their former uses. Government institutions were moved out in favour of financial institutions, while hotels resumed trading as such.

Yes, absolutely. The destinations listed on our website are only a sample of the different trips we can offer. If you have another destination in mind, simply fill out our enquiry form with all your requirements and one of our Tour Advisers will be in touch with a tailor-made quote.

Do you offer travel insurance?

Yes, all of our trips include comprehensive travel insurance, which now includes Covid cover. This group travel insurance covers individuals needing to drop out of the trip in the following circumstances:

As a general rule, we recommend that you start planning your next school trip 12-18 months before your travel date. We do our best to return all payments that we can in case of cancellations due to Covid-19. However, it is hard for us to return costs that have already been incurred especially if we already started the program. Each of the regional offices of WildChina Education can handle about 800 students in one week.

You will receive a “ Pre-Departure Packet ” which is a very thorough document of about 30 pages to circulate as you see fit. This includes an exhaustive packing list, and pages upon pages of all other essential and useful information, from the climates you will experience to recommended book lists . Trip activities

Discover a world of possibilities on a school language tour to China with Educating Adventures. Bespoke language itineraries to meet your teaching objectives visiting Xi'an, Shanghai and Beijing.

Shanghai is the second most populous city in the world. As a major city and hub for international trade and finance, Shanghai has substantial economic importance. Renowned for its museums, historic buildings and sights such as the Shanghai Tower, the beautiful Yu Garden and the enchanting Huangpu river, this expanding city is an exciting and unique place for students to visit on a school language and culture trip to China.

With so much on offer, you could easily spend weeks immersed in Beijing. However, some must-do's for school groups on a tighter timeframe include a rickshaw tour through the enchanting Hutong, a Tai Chi experience at The Temple of Heaven, and visits to both the Forbidden City and Summer Temple. Both an imperial gem and a modern wonder, Beijing is the perfect destination to complement any school trip.

Pronounced 'see-an', Xi'an was once the terminus of the Silk Road and home to many emperors, courtesans, poets, monks, merchants and warriors. The glory days of Xi'an may have ended in the early 10th century, but a considerable amount of Xi'an's Ming-era ancient city has survived. A trip to Xi'an is not complete without a visit to the Army of Terracotta Warriors. One of the most famous archaeological finds in the world, it is home to a collection of thousands of life-size warriors constructed in 246–221 BC

Far Fewer Young Americans Now Want to Study in China. Both Countries Are Trying to Fix That

The imbalance in the U.S.-China relationship extends beyond trade to the world of higher education

David Moser, an American and associate professor at Capital Normal University in Beijing, poses for a photo at the university, Friday, March 22, 2024 in Beijing, China. Only about 700 American students are studying at Chinese universities, while there are nearly 300,000 Chinese students are at U.S. schools. Without these U.S. students, “in the next decade, we won’t be able to exercise savvy, knowledgeable diplomacy in China,” warned Moser, an American linguist who went to China in the 1980s and is now tasked with establishing a new master's program for international students at Beijing Capital Normal University. WASHINGTON (AP) — Stephen Garrett, a 27-year-old graduate student, always thought he would study in China, but the country’s restrictive COVID-19 policies made it nearly impossible and now he sees interest among fellow scholars wane even after China reopened.

Common concerns, he said, include restrictions on academic freedom and the risk of being stranded in China.

These days, only about 700 American students are studying at Chinese universities, down from a peak of close to 25,000 a decade ago, while there are nearly 300,000 Chinese students at U.S. schools.

Some young Americans are discouraged from investing their time in China by what they see as diminishing economic opportunities and strained relations between Washington and Beijing.

Whatever the reason for the imbalance, U.S. officials and scholars bemoan the lost opportunities for young people to experience life in China and gain insight into a formidable American adversary.

And officials from both countries agree that more should be done to encourage the student exchanges, at a time when Beijing and Washington can hardly agree on anything else.

“I do not believe the environment is as hospitable for educational exchange as it was in the past, and I think both sides are going to need to take steps,” said Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell.

The U.S. has advised its. citizens to “reconsider travel” to China over concerns of arbitrary detentions and widened use of exit bans to bar Americans from leaving the country. Campbell said this has hindered the rebuilding of the exchanges and easing the advisory is now under “active consideration.”

For its part, Beijing is rebuilding programs for international students that were shuttered during the pandemic, and Chinese President Xi Jinping has invited tens of thousands of U.S. high school students to visit.

The situation was far different after President Barack Obama started the 100,000 Strong initiative in 2009 to drastically increase the number of U.S. students studying in China.

By 2012, there were as many as 24,583 U.S. students in China, according to data by the Chinese education ministry. The Open Doors reports by the Institute of International Education, which only track students enrolled in U.S. schools and studying in China for credit, show the number peaked at 14,887 in the 2011-12 school year. But 10 years later, the number was down to only 211.

In late 2023, the number of American students stood at 700, according to Nicholas Burns, the U.S. ambassador to China, who said this was far too few in a country of such importance to the United States.

“We need young Americans to learn Mandarin. We need young Americans to have an experience of China," Burns said.

Without these U.S. students, “in the next decade, we won’t be able to exercise savvy, knowledgeable diplomacy in China,” warned David Moser, an American linguist who went to China in the 1980s and is now tasked with establishing a new master's program for international students at Beijing Capital Normal University.

Moser recalled the years when American students found China fascinating and thought an education there could lead to an interesting career. But he said the days of bustling trade and money deals are gone, while American students and their parents are watching China and the United States move away from each other. “So people think investment in China as a career is a dumb idea,” Moser said.

After 2012, the number of American students in China dipped but held steady at more than 11,000 for several years, according to Open Doors, until the pandemic hit, when China closed its borders and kept most foreigners out. Programs for overseas students that took years to build were shuttered, and staff were let go, Moser said.

Amy Gadsden, executive director of China Initiatives at the University of Pennsylvania, also attributed some of the declining interest to foreign businesses closing their offices in China. Beijing's draconian governing style, laid bare by its response to the pandemic, also has given American students a pause, she said.

Garrett, who is on track to graduate this summer from Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, said he is ambivalent about working in China, citing the lack of access to information, restrictions on discussions of politically sensitive issues and China’s sweeping anti-spying law. He had lived in Hong Kong as a teenager and interned in mainland China, and said he is still interested in traveling to China, but not anytime soon.

Some American students remain committed to studying in China, said Andrew Mertha, director of the China Global Research Center at SAIS. “There are people who are interested in China for China’s sake,” he said. “I don’t think those numbers are affected at all.”

About 40 U.S. students are now studying at the Hopkins-Nanjing center in the eastern Chinese city, and the number is expected to go up in the fall to approach the pre-pandemic level of 50-60 students, said Adam Webb, the center’s American co-director.

Among them is Chris Hankin, 28, who said he believed time in China was irreplaceable because he could interact with ordinary people and travel to places outside the radar of international media. “As the relationship becomes more intense, it's important to have that color, to have that granularity,” said Hankin, a master's student of international relations with a focus on energy and the environment.

Jonathan Zhang, a Chinese American studying at the prestigious Schwarzman Scholars program at Tsinghua University in Beijing, said it was more important than ever to be in China at a time of tense relations. “It’s really hard to talk about China without being in China,” he said. “I think it’s truly a shame that so many people have never stepped foot in China.”

Zhang was met with concerns when he deferred an offer at a consulting firm to go Beijing. “They’re like, ‘oh, be safe,’ or like, ‘what do you mean, you’re going back to China?’” Zhang said. “I feel like the (Chinese) government is trying with an earnest effort, but I feel like a lot of this trust has been broken.”

Gadsden said U.S. universities need to do more to nudge students to consider China. “We need to be more intentional about creating the opportunities and about encouraging students to do this deeper work on China, because it’s going to be interesting for them, and it’s going to be valuable for the U.S.-China relationship and for the world,” she said.

In China, Jia Qingguo, a professor of international relations and a national political adviser, has suggested Beijing clarify its laws involving foreign nationals, introduce a separate system for political reviews of foreign students’ dissertations, and make it easier for foreign graduates to find internships and jobs in Chinese companies.

Meanwhile, China is hosting American high school students under a plan Xi unveiled in November to welcome 50,000 in the next five years.

In January, a group of 24 students from Iowa’s Muscatine High School became the first to travel to China. The all-expenses-paid, nine-day trip took them to the Beijing Zoo, Great Wall, Palace Museum, the Yu Garden and Shanghai Museum.

Sienna Stonking, one of the Muscatine students, now wants to return to China to study.

“If I had the opportunity, I would love to go to college in China,” she told China’s state broadcaster CGTN. “Honestly, I love it there.”

Kang reported from Beijing.

WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to China this coming week as Washington and Beijing try to keep ties on an even keel despite major differences on issues from the path to peace in the Middle East to the supply of synthetic opioids that have heightened fears over global stability.

The rivals are at odds on numerous fronts, including Russia’s war in Ukraine, Taiwan and the South China Sea , North Korea, Hong Kong, human rights and the detention of American citizens. The United States and China also are battling over trade and commerce issues, with President Joe Biden announcing new tariffs on imports of Chinese steel this past week.

The State Department said Saturday that Blinken, on his second visit to China in less than a year , will travel to Shanghai and Beijing starting Wednesday for three days of meetings with senior Chinese officials, including Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Talks between Blinken and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected, although neither side will confirm such a meeting is happening until shortly before it takes place.

The department said in a statement that Blinken would “discuss a range of bilateral, regional, and global issues,” including the Middle East, the war in Ukraine, the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait.

He will also talk about progress made in “resuming counternarcotics cooperation, military-to-military communication, artificial intelligence, and strengthening people-to-people ties” and will reaffirm how important it is for the U.S. and China to be “responsibly managing competition, even in areas where our two countries disagree,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said.

The trip follows a phone call this month between Biden and Xi in which they pledged to keep high-level contacts open, something they had agreed to last year at a face-to-face summit in California. Since that call, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has visited China and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has spoken by phone with his Chinese counterpart . Meetings at lower levels also have taken place.

Despite those encounters, relations are rocky. The U.S. has recently become more vocal in its calls for China to stop supporting Russia’s military-industrial sector, which Washington says has allowed Moscow to boost weapons production to support the war against Ukraine .

“We see China sharing machine tools, semiconductors, other dual-use items that have helped Russia rebuild the defense industrial base that sanctions and export controls had done so much to degrade,” Blinken said Friday. “Now, if China purports on the one hand to want good relations with Europe and other countries, it can’t on the other hand be fueling what is the biggest threat to European security since the end of the Cold War.”

Blinken also has pushed for China to take a more active stance in pressing Iran not to escalate tensions in the Middle East . He has spoken to his Chinese counterpart several times since the Israel-Hamas war began six months ago as he has sought China’s help in getting Iran to restrain proxy groups it has supported, armed and funded in the region.

That topic has taken on new urgency since direct back-and-forth attacks by Iran and Israel on each other’s soil in the past week.

Also high on the agenda for Blinken will be Taiwan and the South China Sea.

In the South China Sea, the U.S. and others have become increasingly concerned by provocative Chinese actions in and around disputed areas. In particular, the U.S. has voiced objections to what it says are Chinese attempts to thwart legitimate activities by others in the waterway, notably the Philippines and Vietnam.

That was a major topic of concern earlier this month when Biden held a three-way summit with the prime minister of Japan and the president of the Philippines.

Germany’s Leader Walks a Fine Line in China

Chancellor Olaf Scholz tried to promote German business interests while delivering warnings from Europe about trade and geopolitical tensions.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany and Xi Jinping, China’s leader, both in dark suits, stand on a red carpet in front of large Chinese and German flags.

By Alexandra Stevenson and Melissa Eddy

Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany tried to strike a delicate balance on a trip to China this week, promoting business ties with his country’s biggest trading partner while raising concerns over its surge of exports to Europe and its support for Russia.

Mr. Scholz met with China’s top leader, Xi Jinping, at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing on Tuesday, the culmination of a three-day visit with a delegation of German officials and business leaders. He also met with Premier Li Qiang as the two countries navigate relations strained by Russia’s war in Ukraine and China’s rivalry with the United States, Germany’s most important ally.

Throughout his trip, Mr. Scholz promoted the interests of German companies that are finding it increasingly hard to compete in China. And he conveyed growing concern in the European Union that the region’s market is becoming a dumping ground for Chinese goods produced at a loss .

But Mr. Scholz chose a conciliatory tone over a combative one in his opening remarks before sitting down with Mr. Xi on Tuesday morning, in a meeting that stretched over three hours and turned into a walk and lunch.

It was the German leader’s first visit to China since his government adopted a strategy last year that defined the Asian power as a “partner, competitor and systemic rival ,” calling on Germany to reduce its dependency on Chinese goods.

Germany’s economy shrank last year, and its weaknesses have exposed a reliance on China for growth. Energy prices have risen because of the war in Ukraine, which has been facilitated by Beijing’s support for the Kremlin. German companies have pushed for more access to China and complained that they face unfair competition .

The chancellor visited German companies with extensive investments in China and met with trade representatives and officials in the sprawling industrial metropolis of Chongqing in China’s southwest and in Shanghai and Beijing.

At a talk with a group of students in Shanghai on Monday, Mr. Scholz fielded a question from a student who planned to study in Germany this year, who said he was “really worried” because the country had partially legalized cannabis. “When you study in Berlin, you can run around the whole time and never meet anyone who does that,” the chancellor assured him.

But he also used the platform to push more serious messages about trade. “Competition must be fair,” Mr. Scholz told the students. “We want a level playing field,” he said.

Mr. Scholz’s trip was an example of the difficult dance that Germany is trying to do: maintaining economic ties with China while managing U.S. pressure to align itself more closely with Washington against Beijing.

In his meetings, Mr. Scholz highlighted Germany’s commitment to doing business with China, but he also warned that Beijing had to curb the flood of Chinese goods into Europe. At the same time, he expressed reservations about the European Union’s investigations into China’s use of subsidies for green technology industries, saying that any discussion about trade must be based on fairness.

“This must be done from a position of self-confident competitiveness and not from protectionist motives,” Mr. Scholz told reporters on Monday.

China’s manufacturing push in green sectors like electric cars and solar panels has touched off trade disputes with Europe and the United States, where such industries have also received government support. But with 5,000 German companies active in the Chinese market, Germany stands to lose more than many of its European partners would if Beijing were to retaliate against the European Union.

“If the E.U. goes too hard against China, we could expect countermeasures and this would be a catastrophe for us,” said Maximilian Butek, the executive director of the German Chamber of Commerce in China.

“For us it’s extremely important that the Chinese market remains open,” he said.

In his meeting with Mr. Xi, Mr. Scholz indicated that Russia’s war on Ukraine and its arms buildup were high on his agenda. “They directly affect our core interests. Indirectly, they damage the entire international order,” he said in opening remarks at the meeting, a transcript of which was provided by Mr. Scholz’s office.

Despite pressing the issue with Mr. Xi, he did not appear to win the commitment that he had sought from the Chinese leader to take part in an international conference for Ukraine planned in June. Germany had hoped that China could use its influence over Russia to help work toward a peace agreement.

Germany would also like China stop selling goods to Russia that have potential uses on the battlefield, and Mr. Scholz told reporters that he had brought up the issue in his meeting. “The point has been made,” he said. “There can be no misunderstanding about how we see things.”

China is hoping to drive a wedge between Europe and the United States by courting leaders such as Mr. Scholz. State media reports depicted his visit as demonstrating the strength of China’s relations with Europe, playing up its economic ties with Germany.

In his opening remarks to Mr. Scholz, Mr. Xi said cooperation between China and Germany, which have the second- and third-largest economies, was beneficial to the world, a remark that could be read as directed at those who have urged Berlin to distance itself from Beijing.

“The two countries should view and develop bilateral relations from a long-term and strategic perspective and work together to inject more stability and certainty into the world,” Mr. Xi told Mr. Scholz, emphasizing the importance of seeking “common ground.”

Beijing is sure to welcome the message that German businesses are committed to China. The Asian giant is trying to court foreign investment to reinvigorate its economy, which has faltered because of a housing slowdown. Some Western businesses and investors have also been rattled by Mr. Xi’s emphasis on national security, which they regard as making it riskier to operate in the country.

From China’s perspective, Germany may be its best hope of delaying or watering down any trade restrictions from Europe, said Noah Barkin, a senior adviser in the China practice at the Rhodium Group, a research firm.

German carmakers have invested billions of dollars in China, and much of their revenue comes from there. Many worry that if the European Commission imposes higher tariffs on Chinese exports, and Beijing retaliates, German businesses will suffer most.

Chinese officials “know that German companies are heavily invested and they use that politically to influence political decision making in Berlin,” Mr. Barkin said.

Germany’s biggest companies, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz and BASF, have large operations in China and strong, effective lobbies in Berlin, Mr. Barkin added. Executives from those companies, along with several others, traveled with Mr. Scholz to China.

“The supply chain in China is stuffed with German goods,” said Joerg Wuttke, a former president of the E.U. Chamber of Commerce in China. “If China has a price war with Germany, then no one will make money anymore.”

Mr. Scholz also brought along the German ministers for agriculture, the environment and transportation, officials who experts said would be particularly interested in working with China.

“You set an agenda with these three ministers, the tonality is overall a cooperative one, these are areas that we want to work on,” said Janka Oertel, director of the Asia Program at the European Council on Foreign Relations.

Chinese officials, for their part, have brushed off the European accusations of unfair trading practices, calling them groundless and an act of “ typical protectionism .” They have hinted that they could retaliate for any actions taken by the European Union, saying that China was “strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposes” its investigations.

In an interview with the German newspaper Handelsblatt, Wu Ken, China’s ambassador to Germany, said the competitive edge of Chinese electric vehicles “relies on innovation, not subsidies.”

“The challenge faced by developed countries lies more in the fact that Chinese companies are more efficient,” the ambassador said.
