Coldplay at Etihad Stadium Manchester 2023 – stage times, support act, tickets and setlist

It's a massive gig for the city - here's what you need to know if you're heading down.

Daisy Jackson

Coldplay will finally touch down in Manchester this month for their long-awaited Music of the Spheres World Tour.

The group, fronted by Chris Martin, will be performing a whopping four nights at the 60,000-capacity Etihad Stadium, home ground of Manchester City.

It’s the first time they’ve brought this tour to the city, choosing London and Glasgow on last year’s run of shows.

Coldplay are one of the most successful and popular bands of the last three decades, with nine albums and endless sold-out concerts in their back catalogue.

They’re also famed for putting on a staggering live show.

This 2023 tour promises to be as environmentally beneficial as possible . They’ve even added a kinetic dance floor that harvests energy from the audience’s dancing, and installed electricity-generating pedal bikes so that the crowd can recharge the band’s battery by having a little cycle.

If you’re heading to see Coldplay at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, here’s everything you need to know.

When are Coldplay performing in Manchester?

Coldplay at Wembley

Coldplay will be taking over the Etihad Stadium for FOUR nights – quite a feat.

They’ll be performing on Wednesday 31 May, Thursday 1 June, Saturday 3 June and Sunday 4 June.

Are there still Coldplay tickets available?

Demand for tickets when they went on sale was phenomenally high – fans reported being in 400,000-strong virtual queues .

So as you might expect, tickets are extremely hard to come by at this point.

At the time of writing, there was one single, lonely seat left in the entire venue for the band’s opening show – and absolutely nothing for subsequent dates.

Keep checking See Tickets here for any last-minute releases.

And if you try to buy tickets second-hand, make sure you’re using a reputable resale site so you don’t get caught out by scammers.

Who is supporting Coldplay in Manchester?

Chvrches will support Coldplay in Manchester

Coldplay have called upon the phenomenally talented Glasgow group Chvrches to be their main support act in Manchester.

The trio, fronted by Lauren Mayberry, are famed for hit singles including Get Out, The Mother We Share, and Gun.

Naturally, for a gig of this scale, one support act won’t do – Coldplay will also be supported by Manchester electronic-indie band Porij.

Each of their songs feels like a love letter to the Hacienda rave scene and bands which came before like New Order.

What are the stage times?

According to the Man City site, these are the stage times for Colplay and their support acts.

  • Campus opening time – 2pm
  • Doors open – 5pm
  • Porij – 6pm-6.30pm
  • Chvrches – 7pm-7.45pm
  • Coldplay – 8.15pm-10.15pm

What’s the expected setlist?

coldplay tour england 2023

Setlists will always be subject to change as artists hone their live show, but this is what Coldplay played on their most recent gig in Barcelona.

Higher Power Adventure of a Lifetime Paradise The Scientist Viva la Vida Something Just Like This (The Chainsmokers & Coldplay cover) Magic What’s Love Got to Do With It (Graham Lyle cover) (with Lauren Mayberry) Charlie Brown Yellow Human Heart People of the Pride Clocks Infinity Sign Hymn for the Weekend Aeterna My Universe (Coldplay x BTS cover) A Sky Full of Stars Sunrise Bamboléo (Gipsy Kings cover) (with Gipsy Kings) Nel blu, dipinto di blu (Domenico Modugno cover) (with Gipsy Kings) Humankind Fix You Biutyful

How to get to the Etihad Stadium

coldplay tour england 2023

Public-transport wise, the Metrolink is the most direct way to get to the Etihad Stadium (and its dedicated tram stop Etihad Campus), which is just a few stops away from Manchester Piccadilly.

Both Holt Town and Velopark Metrolink stops, located on either side of the Etihad Campus stop, will not be open for at least an hour after an event at the stadium.

The trams will be very busy though, and the weather looks good, so you might prefer to walk – it’s around a 30 minute stroll from town with this safe walking route recommended.

If you need to drive, official car parking is priced at £25 for cars, £50 for coaches, and £40 for mini buses.

There are unofficial car parks near the stadium too but make sure you’re not getting ripped off.

Weather forecast in Manchester for Coldplay

Oh guys, you’re in luck – for once in its life Manchester has a stunning weather forecast for the entire run of Coldplay shows.

It’s set to be sunny with highs of 19 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday, then there’s more sunshine with a high of 20 degrees on Saturday and Sunday. Glorious.

Football clubs are always going to have to roll the dice on players as we all know promising players who went on to become stars: Kevin de Bruyne, Gerard Pique, Mo Salah and so on just to name a few from the Premier League – but is that what Manchester City have done with Cole Palmer?

The 21-year-old from Wythenshawe was sold to Chelsea back in September 2023, having only managed to make a few scattered but impressive appearances for Man City, scoring crucial goals in the Community Shield and the UEFA Super Cup, but was still ultimately deemed surplus to requirements.

Shown the exit through nothing other than the sheer quality of Pep Guardiola ‘s starting XI, not to mention plenty of strength in depth and quality off the bench already, the West London club paid what looked to be a handsome £42.5 million for the still relatively unproven youngster at the time.

However, with another hattrick to his name – a perfect one scored all inside half an hour, no less – and a fourth for good measure thanks to a penalty against Everton, he’s quickly become by far and away Chelsea ‘s star man.

ICE-COLD CARIBBEAN COLE PALMER 🇰🇳🥶 SCORED HIS HAT-TRICK IN 29 MINUTES!!! THE QUICKEST EVER HAT-TRICK FOR CHELSEA IN PREMIER LEAGUE HISTORY!!! pic.twitter.com/ggCNKkSPF3 pic.twitter.com/MqVzVTwkMt pic.twitter.com/qSzeiCkYc7 — Football Report (@FootballReprt) April 16, 2024

In the same breath, many are now naturally wondering why he was sold in the first place. It’s no secret that City are spoilt for choice when it comes to talent amongst their ranks and certainly didn’t need the money from his sale; it was simply a case that Palmer wanted more minutes that Pep couldn’t promise.

Shouldering the responsibility for the decision at the time, Guardiola said he completely understood the Manchester-born and bred star’s drive and ambition, admitting that “[With] young players, we always want them to stay but this is normal.

“After one season it is nice, and the second season, but the third season it is, ‘Oh guys, I want to play, I don’t want to sit on the bench’. It’s normal. We understand as a club. We got an offer from an incredible top club like Chelsea and I’m really happy for him. In all clubs these types of things happen.”

However, we dare say that if you were to tell the Catalan coach that same hungry prospect would end up being joint top-scorer with his Erling Haaland the following season and being, we think it’s fair to say he might at least hesitate before green-lighting his departure – and there are plenty more stats to boot.

Now, it’s impossible to know whether or not having the knowledge he has now would have made Pep second-guess his decision and take a chance on integrating Cole Palmer into City’s first team more regularly but put it this way, 25 goals and 13 assists in all competitions is hard to ignore.

Cole Palmer's 20th Premier League goal brings him level with Erling Haaland in the race for the Golden Boot 🤝 pic.twitter.com/8Nq2Bn5bLH — B/R Football (@brfootball) April 15, 2024
  • United, GMP and the Council are clamping down on ‘illegal’ matchday parking at Old Trafford
  • Stockport County secure promotion back to League One after 16 years
  • Phil Foden has to start for England at the Euros – and not just because of his goal contributions

That’s all inside what is for all intents and purposes his full debut season as a first-team starter (which isn’t even over yet), let’s not forget, and while they’ve had similar situations play out with the likes of Jadon Sancho in the past, it must be a little frustrating to see him playing this well in the same only league only in a darker shade of blue.

On the other hand, it’s still early days Palmer could also follow that same narrative even further and see that huge momentum trickle out depending on how his sophomore season goes. He’s also a boyhood Man United fan and not that we’re saying we can see him make that move down the line, but we all know how that switch sadly ended up for Sancho.

For many fans, City or otherwise, the logic seems to be that letting him go was the right decision for everyone, as it’s allowed him to get that crucial playing time and shine like he has this season, which may not have happened while waiting to grab his opportunity off the bench at the Etihad.

Moreover, it’s not like the treble-winners aren’t still looking like they could defend all three of their trophies this year – although it would be interesting to see what impact Palmer has when he comes up against his former club in the FA Cup semi-final this weekend.

What do you think, were City right to sell Cole Palmer or should they have held on to him and given him the minutes he was clearly more than ready for?

England player stats this season are starting to make us think we could actually win Euro 2024

When was the Manchester Marathon too short?

One of the most popular runs in the UK returns this weekend as the 2024 Adidas Manchester Marathon gets underway on Sunday morning, but did you know the famous race was once too short to count as the full shebang?

Yes, it may very be one of the flattest and most accessible races anywhere in Europe but once upon a time the Manchester Marathon was technically a marathon, as those in charge of measuring the thing up didn’t quite nail it.

One job, guys. You had one job…

Here’s the story of for three whole years, tens of thousands of runners sadly didn’t technically complete the Manchester Marathon.

coldplay tour england 2023

Manchester Marathon: The ‘ish’ years

As was widely publicised at the time, in 2016 it was found that roughly the three previous years of the race course that runs throughout Manchester city centre, into the likes of Trafford, Chorlton, Altrincham and beyond didn’t actually fulfil the complete distance needed to qualify as a marathon.

While the race route has to stretch for 26.2 miles, or approximately 42.195 kilometres if you prefer metric (always one that splits the crowd) to count as an official marathon, it turned out that in 2013, ’14 and ’15, Manchester’s biggest running event fell just short of that mark.

Due to a measuring error – for which blame was placed on the Association of UK Course Measurers (AUKCM) , who said an accredited measurer had ridden the course in 2013 but fell foul to an error in the calibration of the bicycle wheel – those three years ended up being 380m too short.

As a result, roughly 24,000 runners who ran the Manchester Marathon during this three-year period essentially had their races voided, including plenty of elite athletes, as the official UK Athletics governing body simply could not recognise their times. How fuming would you be?

  • Manchester United squad make magical memories as they meet fans for ‘Dream Day’
  • The biggest Padel Club facility in the North is coming to Greater Manchester
  • Russ Cook, a.k.a. ‘Hardest Geezer’, is spurring on an entirely new generation of runners

Speaking in an official statement at the time , AUKCM said they regretted the mistake, confessing: “Significant errors in measurement are rare – our procedures are designed to find them at the reporting or checking stages”.

Xtra Mile Events, who were still the organisers of the event at the time, went on to add: “We all understand the anguish and huge disappointment this creates and want to assure our runners that we share the upset and emotion from the AUKCM news regarding the race distance.”

Thankfully, such mistakes haven’t been suffered since and now under the umbrella of sporting giants Adidas, you won’t catch them making the same slips-ups.

Best of luck to all of you racing this Sunday and rest easy in the knowledge that while you might be absolutely dying by those last few miles, at least you can be sure those every one of those final yards is going to count. Now go and smash it!

Coldplay announce new UK and European shows for 2023

The lengthy ‘music of the spheres’ world tour continues next may.

By Tom Skinner

Coldplay performing live on-stage in 2022

Coldplay have announced three new UK shows for 2023 as part of their extensive ‘Music Of The Spheres’ world tour. Last night (August 21) saw the band wrap up a six-night run of London concerts at Wembley Stadium ahead of two scheduled dates in Glasgow this week (August 23, 24). A series of South American gigs will take place between September 10 and November 8. Today (August 22), it’s been confirmed that Coldplay will head back out on the road for further UK and European shows between May and July, 2023. This additional leg is due to begin in Coimbra, Portugal on May 17. Following a two-night billing in Barcelona, Spain (May 24, 25), Chris Martin and co. will return to these shores to play a pair of concerts at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester (May 31, June 1). They’ll then take to the stage at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales on June 6. Tickets go on general sale at 10am local time this Thursday (August 25) –  you’ll be able to purchase yours from here .

Coldplay’s 2023 UK tour dates are as follows:

May 2023 31 – Manchester, Etihad Stadium

June 2023 1 – Manchester, Etihad Stadium 6 – Cardiff, Principality Stadium

After those gigs, Coldplay are set to visit Naples, Milan, Zurich, Copenhagen, Gothenburg and Amsterdam throughout late June and into July. You can find the group’s full live itinerary for this year and next here . The band have shared an official trailer for their forthcoming UK and European tour – check it out above. This past weekend, Coldplay teamed up with Alan Partridge at their penultimate London concert to cover ABBA ‘s ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You’ and Kate Bush ‘s ‘Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)’ . Steve Coogan’s much-loved character donned a jacket emblazoned with  Snow Patrol ‘s band logo. “If you’re running up a hill, make sure you wear the correct footwear. Goodnight!” Partridge said to the Wembley crowd. Other guests to have joined Coldplay on-stage in the capital recently include Craig David ,  Natalie Imbruglia  and All Saints’  Shaznay Lewis . In a four-star review of Coldplay’s latest album, last year’s  Music of the Spheres ,  Rolling Stone UK described the project as “spellbinding” . “It’s the sound of a supremely confident band, so aware their music now matches the euphoria of, say, a stadium triumph that ‘Infinity Sign’ slyly reworks rudimentary football chant “Olé Olé Olé” into something quite beautiful. It shouldn’t work but it does: epitomising Coldplay’s breathless ascent ever higher. It’s just a thrill to be along for the ride.”

Coldplay announce 2023 UK & European dates for the Music Of The Spheres World Tour!

coldplay tour england 2023

The morning after completing their triumphant run of six sold out nights at London’s Wembley Stadium, Coldplay have today announced further European and UK stadium shows for their Music Of The Spheres World Tour in Summer 2023.

The dates include the tour’s first visits to Portugal , Spain , Italy , Switzerland , Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands , alongside UK shows in Manchester and Cardiff .   Since the band’s record-breaking tour began in Costa Rica in March 2022, more than four million tickets have been sold for the dates in Latin America, North America and Europe, which have attracted rave reviews from fans and critics alike (as per the recent praise for the Wembley shows above).

The tour has also been heralded for its groundbreaking set of sustainability initiatives which include a show powered by 100% renewable energy in almost all locations; the world’s first tourable battery system (made from 40 BMW electric car batteries); power bikes and kinetic dancefloors allowing fans to help power the show; solar panels and wind turbines at every venue; a pledge to cut tour emissions by 50%; incentives to encourage fans to travel by green transport; and one tree planted for every ticket sold.

The new tour dates were teased via Easter eggs in the band’s new video for Humankind (taken from their number one album, Music Of The Spheres ) which premiered last week. To the excitement of the band’s eagle-eyed global following, the video also hinted at further shows being announced for south-east Asia and North America.   Tickets for the new European and UK shows will go on sale at 10am local time on Thursday, 25 August. Coldplay confirm 2023 tour and drop cryptic clues for UK dates

What are they up to?

Currently in the midst of their six-date residency at London’s Wembley Stadium, Coldplay have confirmed they will tour again in 2023 and they’ve dropped clues for where the UK dates might take place.

Coldplay sent an email to their mailing list yesterday (17th August), revealing they will hit the road again next year, writing: “Tonight, the band play the fourth of six sold out shows at London’s Wembley Stadium. Further 2023 dates are expected to be announced soon…”

The post also included emojis of a TV, an egg hatching and a magnifying glass.

At around the same time the email was sent, the visually spectacular video for Coldplay's new single ‘Humankind’ premiered, which captures the band in their kaleidoscopic live glory in Mexico City.

As pointed out by Coldplay fan site Coldplay Xtra, eagle-eyed fans have spotted the names of various European cities in the opening sequence of the video including Coimbra, Barcelona, Milan, Naples, Zurich, Copenhagen, Gothenberg and Amsterdam.

There are also two UK cities alluded to in the opening sequence – a picture of Cardiff Castle at the top of some escalators, and the word ‘Manchester’ written in digital lettering.

It’s currently unclear exactly what these clues mean, but it hasn’t stopped Coldplay fans speculating that they point towards the locations of live shows next year.

We’ll wait and see.

Coldplay finish their London Wembley Stadium residency on Sunday (21st August) before they play two nights at Glasgow’s Hampden Park next week.

They then head back to Latin America for a run of dates which concludes in spectacular style with ten sold out nights at Estadio River Plate in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The terrible original names of famous bands, including Coldplay:

Stereophonics - tragic love company.

Members of various bands in their hometown of Cwmaman in the late eighties and early nineties, Kelly Jones, Stuart Cable and Richard Jones eventually became a trio in 1992 and started gigging as Tragic Love Company. The moniker was taken from the name of three of their favourite bands at the time; the Tragically Hip, Mother Love Bone and Bad Company. After they recorded an early demo of their seminal anthem 'A Thousand Trees', local promoter Wayne Coleman booked them to play a series of shows across South Wales on the provision they changed their name. Late-great drummer Stuart Cable got the final name from the 'Falcon Stereophonic' gramophone.

The Stone Roses - The Angry Young Teddy Bears

According to producer John Leckie, who helmed The Stone Roses' seminal self-titled 1989 debut album, the band almost called themselves The Angry Young Teddy Bears. "That's ('The Angry Young Teddy Bears') what the Roses were thinking of calling themselves when I met them," Leckie told Q Magazine in 2016. "It sort of suits them in a funny way. The thing with the Roses is that even though there is a punk heritage, they're hippies. Ian especially. It sounds corny, but there's a lot of love there, and you don't really get that with other Manchester bands." They ultimately opted for The Stone Roses and the rest, they say, is history.

Kaiser Chiefs – Runston Parva

When Nick Hodgson, Andrew White and Ricky Wilson formed the band in 1996, they took their bizarre Runston Parva moniker from the name of a small East Yorkshire hamlet called Ruston Parva. With Nick Baines and Simon Rix later in their ranks, they dumped the 'Runston' and they were signed up to the Beggars Banquet Records subsidiary label Mantra Records. However, despite four single releases, Parva were left label-less when Mantra folded in 2003 and their album '22' went unreleased. Fed up with their bad luck, they renamed themselves Kaiser Chiefs after the South African football club Kaizer Chiefs.

Muse – Rocket Baby Dolls

When frontman Matt Bellamy and drummer Dominic Howard's former band Gothic Plague (surprisingly not a death metal group) split following a series of rifts, they enlisted new bassist Chris Wolstenholme and changed their name to Rocket Baby Dolls. Soon realising it was woeful, after just one gig – their triumphant battle of bands performance at Broadmeadow Sports Centre in Teignmouth in 1994 – they switched it for Muse.

Goo Goo Dolls – The Sex Maggots

Originally a covers band, Goo Goo Dolls were known as the Sex Maggots when they were gigging around Buffalo, New York in 1986. However, they were reportedly forced to find a new moniker when a local promoter refused to put their band name on his marquee. They took their name from a toy called a Goo Goo Doll that they stumbled across in an advert in True Detective magazine. Singer Johnny Rzeznik has since quipped: "It's the best we came up with, and for some reason it stuck. If I had five more minutes, I definitely would have picked a better name."

Coldplay - Starfish

When future Coldplay frontman Chris Martin met Welsh guitarist Jonny Buckland at University College London in 1996, the musical kindred spirits formed a group called Pectoralz. With bassist Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion joining their ranks the following year, they changed their name to Starfish. The band performed their debut show at the now closed Laurel Tree pub in Camden in January 1998 as Starfish and had a number of equally terribly titled songs including the cringey 'Ode to Deoderant'. Several weeks later they changed their name to Coldplay after a good chum called Tim Crompton kindly agreed they could nick the moniker of his own group.

Elbow - Mr Soft

Formed in Bury in 1990, Guy Garvey, Mark Potter, Richard Jupp and bassist Pete Turner called themselves Mr. Soft in homage to the character in the Trebor Softmints advert in the late eighties that was soundtracked by Cockney Rebel's song of the same name, 'Mr. Soft'. Soon shortened to just Soft, the band redubbed themselves Elbow in 1997 and took inspiration from the BBC TV drama The Singing Detective where a character called Philip Marlow calls the word "elbow" as the prettiest word in the English language.

Pearl Jam – Mookie Blaylock

Keen aficionados of the legendary New York Jets basketball player Mookie Blaylock, Eddie Vedder and co. decided to name their band in his honour. After playing a series of shows as Mookie Blaylock, they renamed themselves Pearl Jam in October '90 after signing to Epic Records. The origins of the name are somewhat cloudy, related either to Eddie Vedder's great grandmother Pearl / seeing Neil Young "jam" live / a naughty euphemism, depending on who you talk to... Mookie himself is said to be a big fan of Pearl Jam's music.

Nirvana – Pen Cap Chew

Previously a member of the delightfully named Fecal Matter – aka Brown Towel – Kurt Cobain already had a history of hilariously bad band names before starting his new outfit with Krist Novoselic. After trialling a few dodgy names including Skid Row, Ted Ed Fred and, most notably, Pen Cap Chew, they had a eureka moment and settled on Nirvana. Kurt told Rolling Stone in 1992: "I wanted a name that was kind of beautiful or nice and pretty instead of a mean, raunchy punk name like the Angry Samoans." A superb choice.

Radiohead – On A Friday

Formed while students at Abingdon School, Oxfordshire in 1985, Thom Yorke, Philip Selway, Ed O'Brien, Johnny Greenwood and Colin Greenwood called themselves On A Friday in reference to the rehearsal day in their school's music room. The name stuck for six years until they signed a six-album deal with EMI Records in 1991 and the label requested they ditched it. They opted for Radiohead after the 1986 Talking Heads song 'Radio Head'.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem

Founded at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles in 1983, Anthony Kiedis, Hillel Slovak, Flea and Jack Irons gave themselves the flabbergasting name Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem. According to Kiedis, the name was intended to reflect the "majestic and chaotic" nature of the band. After two shows as Tony Flow… in November of '83 the group opted for the comparatively normal moniker Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Creedence Clearwater Revival - The Golliwogs

Originally named The Blue Velvets, when the band recorded some tracks for Fantasy Records in 1964, label co-owner Max Reiss decided to change it to The Golliwogs after the minstrel doll of the same name. Late rhythm guitarist Tom Fogarty said: "I think, at least to Max anyway, 'Golliwogs' sounded sort of British. We always hated the name but Max owned the label and we were new and wanted very much to make records, so we went along with things." Three years later the name was thankfully dropped.

Nickelback – Village Idiots

When the young Chad Kroeger, Ryan Peake, Mike Kroeger and former drummer Brandon Kroeger formed a covers band in the early 1990s largely pilfering from Metallica, Led Zeppelin and Megadeth's back catalogue, they dubbed themselves the Village Idiots. Realising it would make them a laughingstock on the bigger stage, they later changed it to Nickelback in reference to the nickel in change Mike often gave his customers while working at Starbucks – "Here's your nickel back."

Black Sabbath – The Polka Tulk Blues Band

It's almost impossible to think of a more inappropriate band name as The Polka Tulk Blues Band to fit with Sabbath's crushing heavy metal sounds. Fortunately, they saw sense and abandoned the name in the late 60s with a scathing Iommi telling Ozzy: "Every time I hear it, all I can picture is you, with your trousers around your ankles, taking a f***ing dump. It's crap." Black Sabbath was inspired by three things - the Boris Karloff film of the same name, a dark vision bassist and lyricist Geezer Butler once had, and the work of occult novelist Dennis Wheatley.

Snow Patrol – Shrug

Four years before the formation of Snow Patrol, singer Gary Lightbody and bassist Mark McClelland along with drummer Michael Morrison formed the rather indifferent monikered band Shrug. They self-released the brilliantly titled demo 'The Yogurt vs Yogurt Debate' in 1994 and changed their name to Polarbear in 1996 after discovering there was already an American band called Shrug. Following an EP called 'Starfighter Pilot' in 1997 and the exit of Morrison, the band morphed into Snow Patrol the following year.

KISS – Wicked Lester

Binning their Rainbow moniker when they discovered there was already another band with the same name, in 1971 the group renamed themselves Wicked Lester. During their brief existence the folk/pop/rock group played in public just twice before Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley decided to delve into rock and roll and recruit new members. With Ace Frehley on board by Christmas '72 they changed their name to KISS and played their first live show a month later.

Van Halen – Rat Salad

Van Halen originally called themselves Genesis until they found out a certain British progressive rock band shared then name. The band then redubbed themselves Mammoth… only to discover that was being used too! Still predominately a covers band, the Van Halen brothers toyed with Rat Salad (after the Black Sabbath song) but Dave Lee Roth countered with their surname. Originally worried about it sounding self-absorbed, the whole band eventually agreed to adopt it.

Creed – Naked Toddler

The astonishingly atrocious and inappropriate band name was suggested by guitarist Mark Tremonti in the mid-nineties after he read a story in the press about an abducted child. Unable to settle on a suitable band name at the time, they often performed under a name taken from the headlines in that day's newspaper. Naively adopting Naked Toddler for one show at a club called Yanni's, Scott Stapp revealed in his 2012 autobiography that it was rightfully met with indignation. "The name didn't go over well. Girls hated it and said it made them think of paedophilia. They had a point." We couldn't have put it better ourselves…

U2 - Feedback/The Hype

When drummer Larry Mullen posted a notice looking for band members at Mount Temple Comprehensive School, the resulting group were called The Larry Mullen Band "for about ten minutes" before Bono swept aside the idea. They then opted for Feedback, after the screeching sound that came out of their amps, only to switch it for the decidedly pop band-esque name The Hype in 1977. Eventually they settled on U2 for its "ambiguity and open-ended interpretations."

Blur – Seymour

Formed from the ashes of Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon and Alex James' previous group Circus, the band called themselves Seymour in December 1988 after J. D. Salinger's 1963 novella 'Seymour: An Introduction'. When they were signed to Food Records in 1990, the imprint wisely rejected the terrible name and the band decided on Blur after drawing up a list of alternatives.

Simon and Garfunkel – Tom & Jerry

When they were just 15 years old in 1956, the fresh-faced Paul Simon and Arthur Garfunkel assumed the name Tom & Jerry seemingly in reference to the hit Hanna and Barbera cartoon of the same name. Simon even dubbed himself Tom Graph and Garfunkel took on the name Jerry Landis. The pair scored a minor hit called 'Hello Schoolgirl' before going their separate ways. In 1964 they reconvened as a duo and decided to use their real names to stay "true" to themselves.

Linkin Park – Xero

Formed by high school chums Mike Shinoda, Rob Bourdon and Brad Delson in 1996, with Joe Hahn and singer Mark Wakefield recruited later that year, Linkin Park were somewhat regrettably originally known as Xero - a name that sounds more like a brand of photocopier than a band. After recording a self-titled EP, Wakefield quit the group when tensions grew when they failed to secure a record deal. Xero recruited Arizona vocalist Chester Bennington in 1999 and they changed their name to Hybrid Theory before eventually settling on Linkin Park in homage to Santa Monica's Lincoln Park.

Pink Floyd – Screaming Abdabs

Pink Floyd were formed from the ashes of a band that had a series of bizarre transitory names. First called Sigma 6 (there were six members including Roger Waters, Richard Wright and Nick Mason), in 1964 they adopted a series of short-lived but gloriously ridiculous names including Leonard's Lodgers, the Meggadeaths and the Screaming Abdabs. A year later Syd Barratt coined Pink Floyd after finding inspiration from the Piedmont blues musicians Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

Recent tour reviews

I had always heard Coldplay were a fantastic band to see live. They did not disappoint last night at Fedex Field, right in the midst of their joyous and decidedly over-the-top Head Full of Dreams tour.

The show began with an explosion of color and light (including the LED wristbands supplied to every concertgoer) in the titular track on the band's touring album. Then came fan-favorite "Yellow," followed by "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall," the ever-popular "The Scientist," and "Birds" (the latter was a bit of a personal disappointment as it replaced the brilliant "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face" from recent setlists). This part of the show finished with the anthem "Paradise," featuring an incredible remix outro.

Next the show slowed down for an intimate trio of songs (most of us actually took a seat). This included one of the better tracks from the sub-par "Ghost Stories", "Magic."

Soon, however, things picked up with the timeless piano strokes of "Clocks," themed to a magical red light show. Next came the lighthearted "Charlie Brown." Before it began, lead singer Chris Martin asked everyone to put away their phones and simply enjoy the show. This was followed by the radio hit "Hymn for the Weekend," a candlelit (okay...Iphone flashlight lit) "Fix You," and "Viva la Vida." This last one was remarkable, as nearly the entire stadium knew the lyrics and sang along to the triumphant "Oh-oh-ohhhh" chant. The groovy "Adventure of a Lifetime" finished off this section, featuring Chris gettin' down with the audience, asking everyone to "Get low!"

Then came the highlight of the night for me: an acoustic quad of older (*cough* better *cough*) Coldplay songs which were as intimate as they were nostalgic. The lovely riffs of "In my Place" started off the set. "Don't Panic" was sung by drummer Will Champion; it's one of my favorites. But it couldn't top what was (for me) the best song of the night: "Trouble." Somber but beautiful in its own way, "Trouble" is a rare find in the setlists of today's Coldplay and was absolutely fantastic. Finally came another rare gem: "Green Eyes," which was somewhat marred by Chris's well-intentioned attempt at giving the local Redskins some luck (HA! what folly) by changing the lyrics.

The finale of the show was the hopeful and popular trio of "Something Just like This," "A Sky Full of Stars," and "Up and Up." This last track was played against the backdrop of the magical and visually stunning music video for the song.

And if there were two adjectives to sum up the show as a whole, they would be just that: magical and visually stunning. Thanks for an awesome show, Coldplay!

First of all I need to just say wow! Wow! Yesterday I experienced one of the greatest nights of my life. Yesterday I really did feel like I was part of something special, something so big and beautiful. The love, the happiness and the excaitment people were feeling last night were something you can't put words on. We stood in the rain for so many hours, we sat in a que and then we stood in the rain again.. but let me just say that when Coldplay came on stage they put on the best god damn show ever. You could really feel their thankfulness during the show. They promised us (in Chris Martins own words) "The best fucking show ever" and let me tell you it was! During the night I got to experience people from different countries dancing and singing along together, I got to experience that moment when Chris decided to write a new song about Sweden and Gothenburg! The night was amazing in so many ways. And just as he said during the night, that he believes when people are working together and last night everybody in that arena stood together. We celebrated the music, the evening and most of all we celebrated the love. Because in the end of the day Love is what matters and it will always win.

Yesterday was beautiful, just pure beautiful!

A Coldplay concert is a real face to face experience for a someone who love their songs. It may not be an intimate experience but considering the legions of fans that they have only a concert can accommodate everyone who are waiting all their lives for a chance to hear them live. and they never disappoint. A total performance complete with lasers and light and firework BUT without much fanfare, just them singing & playing their hearts OUT song after song alone or in harmony with the fans some crying, most gleefully dancing to their upbeat song or swaying OR slow dancing to slow Fix You or Yellow and probably thinking of someone they "cannot replace". Chris Martin is an awesome guy and so are the rest of the band. May their personal lives be as awesome as their professional lives, they deserve that too. as to Singapore, it may not be as engaging as it would be in the Philippines but hey, no one can complain; i had the best time celebrating my birthday in one of the best stadium this side of town with around 50K Coldpay fans celebrating with me :) :). Long live Coldplay, may you continue to bring joy to you fans worldwide. Looking forward to another Coldplay concert experience in the future.

Israel carried out strike on Iran, US officials say

How much glastonbury 2024 tickets cost - including coach prices, car park or campervan passes and tipis.

Glastonbury fans will have their final chance to get their hands on tickets for the 2024 event as two resales takes place this week.

The legendary festival returns to Worthy Farm on June 26, with hundreds of thousands of music lovers descending on the Somerset site for the five-day bash.

It was revealed back in March that Glastonbury veterans Coldplay, and first-timers Dua Lipa and American singer Sza, will all headline the Pyramid Stage at this year's festival, with country singer Shania Twain taking the Sunday afternoon legends slot.

READ MORE: Glastonbury Festival 2024: National Express adds new coach locations including in Greater Manchester

Tickets initially went on sale in November and were snapped up in a matter of minutes. Festival-goers had to pay a £75 deposit at the time, before settling their balance during the first week of April.

Anyone who didn't pay their ticket balance by the deadline has now lost their ticket. But it's good news for anyone who missed out the first time around as those unsold tickets will go back on sale this week, giving fans one last chance to snap one up.

The first ticket resale will be for coach packages - which include a festival ticket as well as coach travel from one of a number of UK cities. Coach tickets will go on sale at 6pm on Thursday, April 18.

A general sale of standard tickets will then take place at 9am on Sunday, April 21. This time around, customers will have to pay the full price of their ticket or coach package upfront.

Admission to Glastonbury Festival has risen steeply over the years, with some criticising the festival for upping its prices last year. Back in 1979, in the very early years of the festival, tickets cost a fiver - but attendees will have to fork out more than £350 for the festival this year.

Here's what you can expect to pay for a ticket, as well as any extras you might need such as car parking passes or pre-erected accommodation.

How much are Glastonbury festival tickets?

Festival-goers for the 2024 event will be charged £355 plus a £5 booking fee for a standard ticket. You'll also have to pay for secure delivery of a general admission ticket at £9.95 per order.

This year's ticket price has seen a £20 increase from last year’s event. The festival cost £335 plus a £5 booking fee in 2023, which was up £55 from the 2022 price of £285.

During the main sale in November, customers paid just a £75 deposit when they purchased their ticket, before paying the rest of the ticket price earlier this month. However, any tickets purchased in the resale have to be paid for in full.

That means if you're buying tickets for a large group, you'll want to make sure you've got the funds to cover the total cost before you try and purchase tickets. Any mistakes or delays at the booking stage could see you booted off the page and cost you and your group your tickets. You can read more about the rules around buying tickets here.

How much are coach packages?

If you are buying a coach ticket on Thursday evening, you have to pay the price of your coach travel on top of the price of your festival ticket. There are one-way or return travel options and you can choose between a departure day of Wednesday or Thursday from one of several major cities including Manchester, London or Bristol.

Return coach tickets range from £44 (Bristol) to £151 (Edinburgh). One-way tickets are available from five destinations - Bath (£24), Bristol (£24), London (£40), Reading (£35) and Taunton (£29). You can find the full list of prices on the Glastonbury website here.

Festival-goers who have booked a coach package will not receive their festival ticket until they are on the coach. That means there is no ticket delivery fee, but you will have to pay a £2.75 e-Ticket fee per order for your coach ticket.

How much are car park and campervan passes?

If you want to drive to the festival you will need to purchase a car parking pass so you can park your vehicle on site. A car parking pass costs £55 and can be purchased when you book your ticket.

If you want to bring a campervan or a caravan you need a different pass that lets you pitch up in the designated campervan areas. Campervan tickets for 2024 cost £200 for a standard pitch or £300 for a large pitch.

Passes are only available to general admission ticket holders, not people on coach packages.

How much are tipis?

For people who don't want to camp, Glastonbury has an area of pre-erected tipis that can be hired for the weekend. The festival's Tipi Village offers pre-erected 18-foot tents that can accommodate up to six adults.

A tipi for Glastonbury Festival 2024 costs £1,750 to hire for the weekend - and that does not include the cost of your festival ticket. A resale for tipi hire will take place at 11am on Sunday, April 21.

Glastonbury resale: 2024 coach tickets sell out in 18 minutes

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Coach resale tickets for Glastonbury Festival have sold out in 18 minutes.

Music lovers who missed out on their first chance of nabbing a ticket in November were able to try again in a resale for coach and ticket packages at 18:00 BST.

Festival organisers had warned tickets for the 2024 resale were "very limited" .

There will be one more opportunity to buy general resale tickets on Sunday.

In a post on X, See Tickets announced coach resale tickets had sold out by 18:18 BST .

Last year, resale tickets sold out in just seven minutes .

Five things you may not know about Glastonbury Festival

The areas you don't see at Glastonbury Festival

Tickets for the 2024 festival cost £355 per person plus a £5 booking fee, up from £335 for 2023's event . Tickets bought in the resale had to be paid in full at point of booking.

The number of tickets available for the resales depended on the amount of people who did not pay the full price for their ticket, after paying the deposit in November.

The upcoming festival marks the first time the event will have two female headliners - Dua Lipa and SZA - with Coldplay as the third act topping the bill.

Shania Twain will play the coveted "legend slot" on Sunday afternoon.

The likes of Lulu, Frank Turner and Kate Nash were added to the bill on Tuesday.

Other acts include Afrobeats artist Burna boy, award-winning UK rapper Little Simz, Avril Lavigne, Keane, Cyndi Lauper, with more artists still to be announced.

The festivities return to Worthy Farm near Pilton, Somerset in the final weekend of June, from Wednesday June 26 to Sunday June 30 .

The bulk of the Glastonbury 2024 line-up has been shared, with Dua Lipa ,  Coldplay  and  SZA  set to headline the iconic Pyramid Stage in June.  Shania Twain , meanwhile, will perform in the coveted legends slot on the Sunday.  Check out the rest of the bill here .

In return for your ticket, you’ll be asked to complete shifts across the festival – the length and number of these vary, depending on which charity you attend with. Be warned: you may have to pay a deposit for your ticket, which can be the same price as the entry to the festival. For more information,  visit Glastonbury’s jobs page .
