Summer Concert Tour 2024: Iconic music festival announces hit line up of Simple Minds, Texas and Collective Soul

The Taupō Summer Concert in full swing.

It’s going to be a great summer in New Zealand.

One of the country’s most beloved calendar events of the summer, the Summer Concert Tour has unveiled their exciting 2024 line-up and there is something for everyone but mostly for 80s and 90s music lovers.

Headlining the three shows which will take place in Taupō, Hamilton and Gibbston Valley, is one of the UK’s most successful bands, Simple Minds. Known for their hits such as Don’t You (Forget About Me) , Waterfront and Promised You A Miracle , the tour marks the first time the band has returned to the country since 2017.

But they aren’t the only band you’ll be singing well into the night with. Other acts include the Scottish rock band, Texas, who earned rave reviews after their performance at Glastonbury this year. You’ll no doubt know plenty of their tunes as they have earned spots on the NZ Top 40 charts multiple times with their 80s and 90s hits I Don’t Want A Lover and Say What You Want .

Simple Minds.

Another iconic band taking the stage is Collective Soul. They were formed in 1992 and reached the NZ Top 40 many times in the 90s with their beloved tunes like The World I Know and Shine .

Finally, the show will see an electric performance from Pseudo Echo. They were originally meant to take the stage at the 2021 tour but as many fans recall, it was sadly cancelled due to Covid restrictions. Thankfully, the time has come for the popular band to play all their iconic songs such as Funky Town and Beat For You for their Kiwi fans.

It comes after the beloved music festival revealed they leaving one major location off the list during their tour next year.

Pseudo Echo will play the Summer Tour 2024 in January.

Following the devastating impact of Cyclone Gabrielle, the show’s organisers have revealed they will not be returning to the Coromandel next year due to infrastructure issues.

In a statement issued to the Herald , Greenstone Entertainment CEO, Amanda Calvert said, “We love the Coromandel region,” and noted they have a 10-year agreement in place with Thames-Coromandel District Council for the Whitianga Summer Concert.

Despite this, they were unable to commit to a 2024 concert in the area as construction is due to begin on State Highway 25A’s new bridge and have come to an agreement with the council that a one-year break will “allow time for the planned new infrastructure to bed in.”

Replacing the Whitianga show will be the one-off concert at Claudelands Oval in Hamilton and will include the same show format and line-up as the two other concerts included in the nationwide tour.

The Taupō Summer Concert will take place on Saturday, January 27, and the Hamilton show will take place on Sunday, January 28.

As for the South Island concert punters, the highly anticipated Gibbston Valley Winery Summer Concert in Queenstown also falls on a long weekend taking place on Waitangi weekend, Saturday, February 3.

The Summer Concert tour has become an iconic part of the New Zealand summer festival season with previous shows seeing Pat Benatar, Neil Giraldo, Gin Wigmore, Billy Idol and Smash Mouth among many others perform on Kiwi soil for an unforgettable live outdoor music show.

Collective Soul is an American Rock band that originate from Stockbridge in Georgia, USA. He band is a combination of alternative, hard rock and post-grunge. They formed in 1992.

The group currently consists of lead vocalist Ed Roland, rhythm guitarist Dean Roland, bassist Will Turpin, drummer Johnny Rabb and lead guitarist Jesse Triplett. Lead singer, Roland, is responsible for the band’s formation in the early 90s. He has worked in the music scene since the mid 80s, performing and making demos in his home town of Stockbridge. He started recruiting musicians in order to put a band together and throughout the years, the line-up of Collective Soul changed radically, with members coming and going until Collective Soul was made of the line up we see today.

The band’s breakthrough came early in their career: in 1993 their first official single ‘Shine’ became a mainstream hit and led to them being signed by Atlantic Records, a leading record label company. Following this surprise hit, Atlantic records quickly released the band’s first demo, hoping to cash in on their sudden popularity. The album was a success and went on to achieve double platinum status.

Since this early success, Collective Soul have gone on to achieve enormous mainstream recognition. They have since recorded seven Number one rock hits. Some of their most famous singles include ‘Breathe’, ‘Wasting Time’, ‘Gel’ , ‘December’ and, of course, smash hit ‘Shine’. In 2004 the band created their own independent music label, El music Group, that allowed them greater control over their music and what they released. The band received an enormous honour in 2009 when they were inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in September.

Live reviews

Before I get to the set list, let me say this was probably one of my top 3 CS shows. As is the case with CS, I can't pick just one anything that's my "favorite".

The venue was intimate but not small and there wasn't a bad seat in the house. I would definitely recommend seeing a show here if you get the chance.

There was no opening band at this show and as the lights dimmed, you could feel the electricity, the excitement, crackling in the air. For me that's always a good sign that the night will be one to remember.

The lights on the stage lit up and the entrance music started to play - quite surprisingly a song that's almost 60 years old: Climb Every Mountain (from the Sound of Music) ... the guys walked on and proceeded to slam head first into Heavy. They rocked through four or five songs before addressing the crowd. Classics like Shine, TWIK, Gel and December were there as well as newer hits from their SWYSBC release. The jewels of the night were two new songs: All Our Pieces and Rule #1. Ed spoke of the writing and recording the band has been doing in Atlanta for a new CD - no release date was mentioned, but be assured new music is on the way. A special moment for me was when Ed sang the first verse of Amazing Grace before launching into Shine.

Johnny Rabb proved once again he is The Man - a man with a mission to rock your socks off. Every beat of the drums vibrated to your very soul and resonated in the shaking of the floor and the furniture. Jesse never fails to disappoint by delivering his licks with passion and energy. Ed was his usual charismatic, energetic, microphone wielding self hopping and dancing across the stage (pausing to photobomb a few selfies with fans along the way).

About an hour into the show, Ed mentioned to the crowd that they "don't do encores". Why? He explained that it's because the venue only gives them a set amount of time to play, and with the time spent leaving the stage, all the clapping, and returning to the stage, they'd rather just play music for us and not waste any of that allotted time.

All in all, a high energy show with everything you love about Collective Soul. As Ed said himself during the show, "We are a band born in the 90s, but we are not a 90s band - and we still f-ing rock!" Yes. Yes they do.

The show was an hour and a half long, with seventeen songs in total played. In order, they were:

Amazing Grace

All Our Pieces

Precious Declaration

Where The River Flows

I only went to the show to see Collective Soul, no offense to Soul Asylum or 3 Doors Down. As usual, they did not disappoint. They started with two new songs, "Now's the Time" and 'Over Me', then launched into "Shine" which brought those not already standing to their feet. Other hits they played included 'December', 'Why Part 2', 'Better Now', 'The World I Know', and 'Heavy'. They did two new songs, 'Right As Rain' and 'Observation of Thought'. RAR was on the live album, but OOT is a brand new song with heavy meaning. They closed out the show with 'Gel', 'Where the River FLows', and 'Run'. Ed Roland played out the band on 'Run' and continued to play while the audience sang the chorus as he left the stage. This is only my 3rd Collective Soul show but it was the best one I have ever seen. I wished they could have played more songs, but I was beat with the heat and humidity so I didn't stay for 3 Doors Down.

Collective Soul is so much more than their hits and the few songs casual listeners to the band know. At the heart of their music is the simple concept of Love and Faith, which can be heard in almost every song they do. Their music speaks to the heart, and the soul.

Collective Soul is an American rock band hailing from Stockbridge in Georgia. The band formed back in 1992 and have been going strong ever since, their music a powerful concoction of alternative, hard rock and post grunge. Ed Roland paved the way for the band to make their musical mark on the world, the band’s sound a recollection of the likes of Aerosmith and other extremely popular 90s bands. The band is still incredibly relevant today, however. Their music may be old school but it stands the test of time, and the band is loved by many today. Indeed, the crowd that turned out in their thousands to watch Collective Soul were full of passion and excitement, and had soon worked themselves up into a wild frenzy full of anticipated excitement. The band played all their hits, including their impressive seven hit number one singles, such as ‘Breathe’, ‘Gel’ and ‘December’. The real climax was, of course, hit single and iconic rock song ‘Shine’, which brought the house down and ended the night on an absolute high.

Ed Roland, Dean Roland, Will Turpin, Johnny Rabb and Jesse Triplett otherwise known as Collective Soul are the Georgian rockers who always bring the party with their live show. They have enjoyed international commercial success and have gained a large following for their music. Away from the obvious breakout hit 'Shine', the group has a number of other major releases and a show that blends all this music together.

The quintet makes one hell of a large sound onstage and frontman Ed Roland has no problems in whipping the crowds up into excitement before the band begin the introductions to 'The World I Know'. They thrive on the cheers and the more the crowd gives, the more the band gives as they really thrash out their instruments during extended versions of 'Listen' and 'Good Morning After All '.

The audience rocks along vigorously due to the enthusiasm of the band and the hits such as 'Better Now and 'Shine' keeps the whole gig moving at a fluid, fast pace. The band proves they will never be considered one hit wonders.

When people think of Collective Soul they think of one song. Shine. Not only do they have many other great hits, but the men of the band put on one of the best shows in rock and roll. As a long-time concert-goer, I have seen every band from The Rolling Stones to The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Out of the 60+ bands I have seen, none have put on a better show than Collective Soul.

Ed Roland is charismatic, engaging and supremely entertaining when he is on stage. He loves to move around and never stands still. He makes every audience member feel like he is singing just for them.

Every band member brings their own special piece of the puzzle to every show. My husband and I have seen them 9 times in the last 3 years and each concert has been a great experience. With a new album coming out this year and an upcoming tour, we couldn't be more excited to see them for a 10th time.

If you have the opportunity to see Collective Soul, please don't hesitate. You won't be disappointed!

I went to this concert knowing all the songs and excited to hear them played live. But it is indescribable how much more amazing they are live. "Precious Declaration" was so much fun, and their new song, "Confession", was an absolute blast. Being one of the youngest people there, I only wish that the audience had been a little more excited and that they had danced a little more. I was in the second row, though, and the band members were fired up and great at interacting (even with the somewhat quieter) crowd. Ed has such a great frontman personality, the band really knows how to use the stage, and each of them are talented artists. So all I am saying is: go! Please go and see Collective Soul! But bring all your friends with you that will want to dance so that this great band will get more of what they deserve.

If you haven't seen Collective Soul in a long time, or ever, I highly suggest it! And definitely get their new album! (they give out free digital copies with your ticket!)

Collective Soul gave a great performance! I have loved them for years, and they keep showing me why I love them so. Their new music is as strong as ever. The harmonies, melodies, rhythm, and, especially, the beautiful lyrics, are as beautiful and thoughtful as anything, if not better, that they've ever done. The show was strong. The two new guys, Jesse and Johnny, are great. I did get to touch base with the band and compliment them on the new material. They were so appreciative, as they've always been. I love that they come out and meet fans, pose for pics, sign items, and just chat as regular guys.

Epic Show! Great sound at the Jubilee Auditorium! They played all the hits and even a brand new song from their next album that had never before been played live. I hung out after the show and got to meet Dean, Will, and Ed who are such easy-going, genuinely nice, down to earth human beings. Even though it was late and they had a long nights drive to Vancouver they took the time to meet some fans, sign some autographs, and discuss how they like to just rock out on the stage! Also I have to say Kudos to the Edmonton fans who are always excited and energetic to see collective soul. They are also a big part of why this show was what it was!

I booked flights, hotel and bought tickets for this show as a surprize gift for my husband for our one year anniversary. The night before the show my husband injured his knee and we unfortunately ended up in ER for 10 hours the next day and completely missed the show. Hopefully get another chance to see them again sometime. :(

amy-drake-1’s profile image

It was a good show, the venue wasn't too big so that even if you're in the back of the seating area, there's still a good view. I've been listening to Collective Soul my whole life and they played old favorites as well as a few new ones. The only complaint I have is that the show was too short, just about an hour long.

International line-up announced for Summer Concert Tour 2024 at Claudelands Oval

collective soul nz tour

Having confirmed dates and venues for 2024, the team at Greenstone Entertainment are excited to announce their mega line up of international artists and tickets details for one of New Zealand’s most sought-after summer festivals, the Summer Concert Tour 2024.

Four amazing acts -   SIMPLE MINDS ,   TEXAS ,   COLLECTIVE SOUL , and   PSEUDO ECHO   - will take centre stage at Claudelands Oval, Hamilton on 28 January 2024.

There’s been a ground swell of hype on who will be heading to our shores next year with this one not to be missed on your summer concert calendar.

SIMPLE MINDS   are one of the UK’s most successful bands with 60 million records sold worldwide. Having not been here since 2017, you’ll want to be front and centre to experience the unmistakable   Don’t You (Forget About Me) , just one of an incredible 15 hits that reached the NZ Top 50 singles charts throughout the 80’s, with   Waterfront   reaching No1 for 13 weeks, along with   Promised You A Miracle   and   Alive & Kicking   to name but a few of their huge string of hits. Over the past 10 years Simple Minds have rekindled the magic that made them a vital artistic force in their early days which has found themselves playing to hundreds of thousands of people every year, all over the world.

TEXAS   are a Scottish rock band who formed in 1986 and continue to be fronted by founding member Sharleen Spitiri. They recently performed the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury 2023 to rave reviews and will bring that energy with them to New Zealand with Top 40 NZ singles from the 80’s and 90’s, including   I Don’t Want A Lover   and   Say What You Want , plus   Black Eyed Boy   and   Summer Son , all of which feature in their album The Very Best Of 1989 – 2023, which was released in June 2023 to coincide with their appearance at Glastonbury.

COLLECTIVE SOUL   are a formidable five-piece rock band, who formed in the states in 1992. Most of the band grew up together and knew each other as kids, making the perfect recipe for them to bring their awesome chemistry of live rock to the Summer Concert Tour shows with their indelible set list of classics including   The World I Know ,   Shine   and   December , all Top 40 NZ hits from the 90’s, as well as   Where The River Flows   and electrifying new meshes from their new album Vibrating.

PSEUDO ECHO   pioneered the eighties with their avant-garde look and electro sound, introducing audiences to a new sound in an era of pub rock. Having originally been on the bill to play the Summer Concert Tour in 2021, they’ll  be sure to please with their stylized look and electro sound including hit singles   Funky Town , which reached No. 1 on the NZ Singles Charts in 1987 and was on the charts for 19 weeks, as well as   Beat For You ,    Listening   and the unmistakable   Send Me An Angel .

Of today’s announcement, Greenstone Entertainment CEO Amanda Calvert comments “We’re thrilled to have secured the amazing line up of four international artists for next year’s Summer Concert Tour. Our fans will love the awesome array of 80’s and 90’s hits that will bring a real summer festival feel to our already well-known show locations of Taupō and Queenstown, as well as the exciting new venue of Claudelands Oval in Hamilton that we have introduced as an interim measure before returning to the Coromandel in the future. With over a decade of bringing some of the best of international live music to our shores, we’re also delighted that our North Island dates will fall on Auckland Anniversary long weekend again, with Queenstown the following weekend for those who want to make a long Waitangi weekend of it.”

Ed Roland can describe 30 years in Collective Soul with two words.

“It’s an honor and privilege,” said the frontman and songwriter behind the Georgia-born band known for a bedrock of time-tested hits. “It’s that simple. Just being able to do what you love, it’s an honor and a privilege.”  Since launching a major label career in 1994, Collective Soul has charted a path that most rock bands dream of, but only few achieve. They cut through a noisy 1990s rock scene with a knack for stick-to-you-like-glue melodies, roof-shaking guitars, and a touch of Southern grit. Behind enduring singles like “Shine,” “December” and “The World I Know,” the band hit the ground running for what would not be a short-lived sprint, but a steady marathon of uncompromising – and always catchy – albums . Since launching, they’ve become one of the most reliable rock bands in America, a tried-and-true force in a world often defined by turmoil and turbulence.

And in the same year the band celebrates three decades of music making, Collective Soul returns with what may be its most ambitious project to-date: HERE TO ETERNITY , a double LP cut in the California home once owned by Elvis Presley. With sharp, polished rock riffs and Roland’s signature wise-to-the-world storytelling, HERE TO ETERNITY plays like a full-throttle Collective Soul album from the moment it begins spilling out of stereo speakers.

“When I gave the album to management and radio promo,” he said, “I was like, ‘Put the needle on any song, I’m that proud of it.’”  Roland – alongside brother and co-founding member Dean Roland (guitar), childhood friend and bassist Will Turpin, guitarist Jesse Triplett and drummer Johnny Rabb – decamped for a month to Palm Springs, California, to record virtually all of HERE TO ETERNITY inside a house once owned by Elvis and Priscilla Presley. Called the “Elvis Presley Palm Springs Estate,” it’s believed to be the only home besides the famed Memphis estate owned by Presley at the time of his death.

Stepping inside the King’s one-time California getaway, his influence seeped into the album-making process. Ed Roland and album co-producer Shawn Grove slept in the home for the duration of the sessions, which overlapped with the death of Presley’s daughter Lisa Marie in early 2023.

“The sticky DNA, with Elvis being there,” Turpin said, “You can just tell it was his designs. All pink tiles. It’s straight out of 1977. It was super cool just to be there and in the zone.”

Or, in Triplett’s words: “It’s not something you can put your finger on specifically, but the vibe and energy of that place translated through the music. You almost don’t realize until the end and listen to the rough mixes and you go ‘oh shit … we did that.’”

Rabb added, “The energy was natural and the flow was incredible. We were all just in the pocket and the chemistry works so well.”

Listeners hear the results on HERE TO ETERNITY , a thrilling no-skips effort from start-to-finish. The album kicks into gear with songs the blues-tinged “Bluer Than Blue” and jangly roots rocker “Not The Same” before later cruising into the band’s long-running appreciation for Elton John and The Beatles with “Sister and Mary.”

They incorporate a Presley-like shuffle beat on throwback rockabilly jam “Matter of Fact,” adopt stripped-down balladeering on tender-to-the-touch number “Letter From E,” and croon a piano-backed tale of love on “Be The One,” which Ed Roland recorded solo in Elvis’ former bedroom. Plus, one of the standout songs on HERE TO ETERNITY wasn’t cut in Palm Springs, but in another room where Elvis once walked – the famed Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. Ed Roland tracked a live rendition of “Bob Dylan (Where Are You Today)” during a sold-out tour stop inside the hallowed Ryman halls.

But no song grabs on the first listen quite like “Mother’s Love,” the lead single and opening number debuted on the road last year. Featuring longtime Paul McCartney guitarist Brian Ray on slide guitar, “Mother’s Love” blasts off the turntable with a foot-stompin’, gnarled riff before gliding into a chorus layered by high-flying harmonies.

On “Mother’s Love,” Ed Roland sings: “Guess we’re all misunderstood/To what we can and what we should/Still I find above/All my strength from Mother’s Love.”

Alongside Ray, who lives in Palm Springs, guests on the album include longtime Sheryl Crow bandleader Peter Stroud and Mickey Thomas of Jefferson Starship fame.

“I happened to be walkin’ down the street and I had met Brian Ray a couple of times,” Ed Roland said. “I saw him and was like, ‘Brian, hey man. Why don’t you come over and break bread? We’re up at Elvis’ house.’”

The invite for a bite of grub turned into a session, of course. With a laugh, Ed Roland added, “I’m gettin’ pretty sneaky in my old age.”  And the album closes with “Over and Out,” an ominous folk-rock tune about life moving on – no matter if you’re ready or not.

“Last year, my niece was going over to college…and I don’t understand that yet, because my son’s 14,” Ed Roland said. “The song’s about letting your children go and letting them start their adulthood. I tried to feel what my sister and brother-in-law were feeling, which I’m about to feel.”

This summer, the band takes HERE TO ETERNITY on the road with Hootie & the Blowfish and Edwin McCain for the “Summer Camp with Trucks Tour.” A coast-to-coast run inside some of North America’s premier venues, stops including Fenway Park in Boston, Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, the Honda Center in Anaheim, California and Pine Knob Music Theatre in Detroit.

With 20 new songs, how does the band decide which to play live? You’ll have to catch a show to find out.

“It’s tricky,” Dean Roland said. “We know we wanna play the songs people came there to see, but it’s still fun. We’re gettin’ up there, doin’ our thing.”

And fans can bet on Collective Soul taking songs from HERE TO ETERNITY on the road for years to come. As the album title suggests, three decades is just the start.
