31 Cruise First Aid Kit Essentials You Need to Have

31 cruise first aid kit essentials you need to have

Sharing is caring!

As you are getting ready for your cruise and working on your packing list, don’t to forget about your cruise first aid kit essentials.

As travelers and cruisers, we hope not to have to use them. However, being prepared with your travel first aid kit , is one of the most important cruise preparations you can make.

I like to keep my cruise first aid kit together, and ready for use every time we cruise. Before each cruise, I simply take inventory and replenish as necessary.

Now, if you did forget something, you can pick up a few small items in the cruise ship’s convenience store.

That said, I will guarantee you that it will be more expensive and the variety of items is extremely limited. Worse than that, if something occurs when the shop is closed (as they close while in port as well as at night), you could be really stuck.

To Note: On a cruise ship, there is a ship’s doctor and medical staff. So while this post is about being prepared for minor situations where first-aid treatment or pharmaceutical products might be necessary, please do not hesitate to visit the medical centre should you need medical treatment or advice.

First Aid Essentials for a Cruise

Small wound treatments.

It’s so common while on a cruise, or on any travels, to get small cuts, scrapes, blisters etc. Those little non-emergency things can happen so bring along a few things to make sure a little issue doesn’t become a bigger issue.

1. Band-aids

cruise media kit

I always need a few bandages for blisters . New shoes, or walking so much more than usual just seem to bring this on. I bring some that are made for blisters, that will stay on in that water.

cruise media kit

Recommended: Blister bandages of different sizes (see details & over 4000 reviews on Amazon here)

2. Antibiotic Ointment

Antibiotic ointment is great to have with you on excursions or in your cruise cabin. It heels small cuts so quickly and is said to prevent infections and is a must-have when you travel.

cruise media kit

Recommended: Travel size antibiotic ointment

3. Hydrocortisone Cream

cruise media kit

Recommended: Hydrocortisone cream (check price & read more than 30000 Amazon reviews here)

4. Gauze and Alcohol Wipes

Some small gauze and alcohol wipes can be useful for scrapes or anytime you need to disinfect, especially if you’re on a shore excursion or off the ship.

Emergency Travel Kit for your cruise PIN image

5. First Aid Kit

A first aid kit that you bring with you on your cruise is such a good idea! Plus, you can use it later in the house or even for road trips – plus future cruises of course!

cruise media kit

Recommended: Emergency first aid kit (see price & 60,000+ Amazon reviews here)

Medications and Pharmaceutical Products

6. pain relief medication.

Bring along some of your preferred pain medications such as Advil and Tylenol or a brand you like and trust.

7. Cold Medicine/Sinus Medication

cruise media kit

8. Cough and Sore Throat Medication

cruise media kit

Cough candies and throat lozenges are a must, with dry sea air, bring some along in different flavors.

cruise media kit

Recommended: Cough and sore throat drops

Tip: Make your own mini DIY travel first aid kits in small ziplock bags. These are perfect for the plane, for cruises and road trips.

9. Prescription Medication

It may go without saying, but do make sure your regular (or less regular) prescription medications make it onto your cruise packing list . There may be medications you don’t use daily, but they are important to have with you just in case. So, do make sure these are packed.

Tip: Cruise lines recommend that you bring at least 14 days of extra medication, as an extra precaution.

31 Essentials You Need for Your cruise first aid kit

10. Coldsore/Fever Blister Medication

cruise media kit

11. Eye Drops

cruise media kit

Recommended: Eye drops (see reviews and check price on Amazon here)

12. Ear drops

cruise media kit

First Aid Tools

13. tweezers.

Tweezers don’t seem necessary until you or your child gets a splinter. Just throw it in there and forget about it.

14. Thermometer

A thermometer should be part of your first aid kit, but if you have kids, having one on hand is a necessity.

15.  Travel Flashlight

cruise media kit

I like to bring a small flashlight when we travel. I just make sure the battery is still working, and if not I replace or buy a new one.

This is really my own thing and I know not everyone is a worrier like me.  When I get to a hotel I always check where the exits are so you get where I’m coming from – I’m safety conscious.

However, I think there’s a good case to be made for why a flashlight could be very important in an emergency situation, so it lives in my cosmetic bag and travels with us.

Recommended: Small bright flashlight (check price & see 20,000+ excellent Amazon reviews)

first aid essentials

Stomach and Digestive Issues

16. antacids .

Tums, Rolaids or Pepto Bismol can be useful for nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset Stomach, and diarrhea. Whether it’s due to eating or drinking too much, or just having a bit of traveler’s stomach, it can be so useful. We’ve even found if a touch of ship movement is bothering us, a chewable antacid has brought such relief.

I also bring a few of these along in a little portable ziplock first-aid baggie I make up for excursion days.

31 Things to Pack in a Cruise Medicine Kit

17. Imodium (diarrhea medication)

You can get an upset stomach for a variety of reasons. Now if it’s a flu and you need to see the ship’s doctor, definitely do so. However, if you get a bit of traveler’s stomach bring along some Imodium.

18. Re-hydrating tablets

If you’ve felt ill or gotten to much sun, re-hydrating tablets can help to make you feel like yourself again. Basically this replenishes your electrolytes (it’s amazing what we lose in energy when our electrolytes are off).

19. Laxatives

cruise media kit

Sun safety and preventing sunburn on a cruise

20. sunscreen.

Having a high SPF, good quality sunscreen is a must, especially if you’re on a Caribbean cruise.

On our first cruise, we couldn’t believe it! Although we’re Canadian, we actually love the sun and had a pretty good base from many hours at our community pool that summer. My husband was a bit stubborn and didn’t want to wear the sunscreen that first day.

Needless to say, he suffered a bit the next couple of days and was slathering on the aloe vera!

That  hot sun reflecting over the water is something else!

If you are cruising in the Caribbean or Bahamas, it’s a good idea to bring reef safe sunscreen .

31 things you need for your cruise first aid kit

Allergic Reactions

26. benadryl.

Allergic reactions can happen and can be unpredictable. Obviously if you already know you or your child has an allergy, you probably have medication (perhaps a Epipen) and know what to do should this occur.

However, people can get unpredictable allergic reactions, or even sensitivities unpredictably. Whether from a food that’s new, or from a lotion or product, reactions such as swelling and hives can happen.

Seasickness Medications

There are many ways to deal with seasickness while on a cruise , and having some of these items with you is a good idea.

31 First Aid Kit Essentials for your cruise PIN image

27. Motion Sickness Patches (behind the ear)

Placed behind the ear, motion sickness patches are a recommended treatment if you are prone to motion sickness. There are some pros and cons, so make sure to check any potential side effects.

Recommended: Motion sickness patch

28. Seabands

This is a favorite for many as they are natural, reusable, and so many people love them and have good results.

cruise media kit

29. Seasickness Medications

I definitely recommend bringing some seasickness medications in your cruise first aid kit. I really don’t get seasick, but I’m always prepared just in case.

Either Dramanine or Bonine work well for many cruisers. My husband is more affected by the movement, and does very well with Bonine and does not experience drowsiness.

cruise media kit

Recommended: Bonine motion sickness tablets

cruise media kit

Recommended: Ginger chews (check price & Amazon reviews here)

Other Essentials to Stay Healthy on a Cruise

31. Hand Sanitizer

Bring a small hand sanitizer bottle everywhere, and especially when you leave the ship to go on an excursion or even to go shopping. You touch money and all sorts of things, and hand sanitizer is great until you get back to the ship and can wash your hands with soap and water.

Travel Tip: Create portable mini-first aid packs (with ziplock baggies)

Something I always keep with me on my cruise packing list , is ziplock baggies. I always have a little ziplock baggie filled with a few simple first aid products that stays in my tote or beach bag for excursions.

Although our larger cruise first aid kit is filled with various products and medications, it stays in our cruise cabin unless we need anything. The little mini first aid emergency kit just keeps a few basics such as waterproof bandaids, neosporin, alcohol wipes, tums or pepto bismol, pain reliever. You can personalize this to your needs.

We keep one packed in our shore excursion bag ready to go!

We’ve gone over the most important products to bring with you on your cruise in your cruise first aid kit. Keep in mind that the ship stores are quite small and products are limited. As well, the prices will likely be double or more than what you’d pay back home.

Take a look through the list and see which items will be most necessary for you and your loved ones on this cruise.

Great list! The cruise ships overcharge for these items – if they have them!

So glad this list was helpful. That’s very true. It’s the worst when you can’t even find what you need!

Thanks for taking the time to comment!

I always pack at least two flashlights in my 1st aid kit. You never know when a power outage my occur, don’t want to use up my cell battery running the flashlight.

Great idea!

Most cruise ships offer first aid services but why not make sure that you have everything you need at the palm of your hands, right? Personally, I also like having medications and most of the things I need in my luggage.

Absolutely – every cruise we’ve been on has first aid services, so there’s never an issue. I’m with you, I like to be prepared so I don’t have to go to the infirmary (and pay) for small issues.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.

I’ve done a few cruises and traveled a lot and always take my own first aid stuff. This has actually made me realize I’m missing a few things and I love the idea of the small baggie for excursions. Thank you and I’m going to redo my first aid stuff right now. Cruise is in early September to Alaska.

Glad you found that little tip helpful. Have an amazing cruise!!

' src=

I love that you touched on getting some gauze and alcohol pads so that you can have access to those when you need to disinfect. My partner and I are thinking about going on some trips this year and we want to be sure we know how to provide first aid. I think it’s a good idea to take a class so that we get taught by professionals.

I think that’s a great point. I actually wish we all took a first aid course both in high school, and every few years as adults. I take one every few years as a requirement, and agree it’s extremely beneficial.

I hope you have a great time on your future travels!

' src=

When you’re confused on a cruise or during a foreign port on a shore excursion, care provides will be overpriced and generally laborious to search out. Although giant cruise ships do have a medical workplace with a doctor and several other nurses, you almost certainly won’t need to go to only for one thing basic sort of a band-aid or some Nuprin. I think it’s a great list. And quite helpful too.

Glad you found the list helpful Mark. I agree it’s better to have some basic first aid stuff, rather than to go to a medical center unless you need too.

I am a retired RN and there are some really freat ideas here which have me adding to my list! Thank-you.

I’m so glad this was helpful!

Carnival Cruise Line bans 1 onboard activity, but not another

C ruise ships have different rules than land-based hotels and entertainment venues. Some of those rules are practical. You can't, for example, light a candle in your cabin.

On land, a candle may help set a romantic mood with only a small chance of burning down your house, but on a cruise ship, the dangers are much more significant. A small fire can become a catastrophe so candles, power strips, curling irons, and clothes irons, among many other things are banned on cruise ships.

Related: MSC Cruises makes bold moves to take on Carnival, Royal Caribbean

Cruise ships also have very specific rules when it comes to smoking. You can never smoke in your cabin or on a cabin's balcony. That's partially due to the risk of a fire and partly due to how smoke travels.

Most regular cruisers have experienced someone breaking the smoking rules on their balcony, Smome travels up and smoking in places where it's not allowed generally leads to other passengers calling security and the penalty for being caught could be anything from a warning to being thrown off the ship.

Both Carnival Cruise Line ( CCL ) and Royal Caribbean allow smoking in parts of their casinos. Royal Caribbean does have small non-smoking casinos on its Oasis-class ships while its Celebrity Cruises line only allows smoking in a small section of its pool deck.

The two rival cruise lines, however, both have strict rules when it comes to gambling.

Carnival asked a key question on onboard rules

If you walk around a cruise ship, you will usually see people playing various games. Some play card games, while others have packed dominos, board games, and other types of games. Carnival and Royal Caribbean ( RCL ) encourage gameplay — they even hard card/game rooms on some ships — but there are certain rules.

Carnival brand ambassador John Heald recently responded to an onboard controversy involving gameplay.

"Why has LRC been banned? Left Right Center is a game played by hundreds of Carnival cruisers every week on your ships. I ask because according to Cruise *** website, the game has been banned from the ships," wrote "V" on Heald's Facebook page. "We’ve played this game with my friends who cruise with us for years. Why this game and not others? Please explain."

The poster followed their question with threats and anger.

"This is the kind of rule that will turn Carnival cruisers away and to other cruise lines. This is being done to line the pockets of the casino. Just admit it and stop being a fool," they wrote.

Carnival makes its gambling policy clear

Heald has addressed this issue before, but he made it clear in his response that the game is not the issue.

"Thank you 'V' and the game itself has not been banned. Playing for money on any game outside of the casino is strictly not allowed. No exceptions, even for quarters as I may have misspoken about a few days ago," Heald wrote.

This post came after an incident where a number of passengers had been playing the dice game for money on one of Carnival's ships. Heald shared the rules again because he saw some media outlets getting the cruise line's policies wrong.

"I saw some of the cut-and-pasting news sites who report on my posts and repost them on their page had headlined we had banned the game. We have not. You can play any game you wish but not for money. And to suggest that this is so that money will be spent in our casinos is silly billy nonsense," he added.

The post was largely supported by Heald's Facebook followers.

"I love it when they say 'this will turn people away.' These are not real problems that are going to stop people from cruising. That statement should only be allowed if John stated that the entire ship was removing all food or they would no longer have stateroom doors," Stephen Phillip Hawker posted.

Andy Samberg, with long blond hair, a pink headband and yellow muscle shirt, winds up to hit a tennis ball in 7 Days in Hell

7 Days in Hell did Challengers before Challengers — threesomes and all

Andy Samberg stars in a tennis mockumentary full of Challengers-level ridiculous rallies, homoerotica, and more

It sometimes seems surprising that tennis doesn’t inspire more movies. Its one-on-one gladiatorial clashes are inherently dramatic and psychological, while the devious scoring system means no match is ever lost until it’s lost. Nail-biting climaxes and last-minute turnarounds are baked into the design. On the other hand, the fast-moving, seesawing action is technically difficult to frame in a way that’s both exciting and legible — and that same scoring system might drastically confuse anyone who doesn’t follow the sport.

Or maybe there are only so many tennis stories to tell. It’s certainly true that after watching Challengers , the torrid, wildly entertaining new tennis melodrama starring Zendaya and directed by Call Me by Your Name ’s Luca Guadagnino, I was struck by some surprising similarities to an earlier film. Only this film isn’t a proper sports movie, or even a pseudo-serious bit of prestige pulp like Challengers . 7 Days in Hell is a profoundly silly 43-minute HBO mockumentary from 2015, starring The Lonely Island’s Andy Samberg and streaming on Hulu and Max.

It’s tough to prove my point without comprehensively spoiling either film. You should watch them both; they’re both lots of fun. Let’s just say that both feature a hotly contested, emotionally (and maybe sexually) charged match between rival male players that goes the distance — and far beyond. Both movies also feature varying degrees of hot threesome action; an absurdly extended, physically impossible rally at the net; and a certain gesture that takes things up a gear. And they both end in strikingly similar ways, even though the actual outcomes are very, very different.

Andy Samberg raises his arms in victory in a loud jacket in 7 Days in Hell

Above: Andy Samberg and Kit Harington in 7 Days in Hell . Below: Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor in Challengers .

Perhaps the key to both films’ success is that they recognize that tennis, with its strange rituals, hourslong matches, hushed intensity, and soundtrack of echoing pops, grunts, and smacks, is actually pretty ridiculous. Guadagnino’s movie spends more than two hours edging along the border of high camp, urged along by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ pounding gay-club score. 7 Days in Hell is an all-out parody; it has no such restraint, if restraint is the word.

7 Days in Hell spoofs an ESPN 30 for 30 -style sports documentary. Its subject is the longest match in tennis history, a first-round clash at Wimbledon that lasted for seven days. The top seed is Charles Poole ( Game of Thrones ’ Kit Harington), a tragically dim Brit carrying the nation’s hopes on his shoulders. The wild card is Aaron Williams (Samberg), a washed-up “bad boy of tennis” in the Andre Agassi mold who happens to be Venus and Serena Williams’ adoptive brother. (In one of many talking-head cameos from famous real-world tennis figures, Serena explains that her father, Richard , adopted a white boy off the streets and turned him into a tennis pro in a “reverse Blind Side .”) Aaron is on the comeback trail after killing a line umpire with a 176 mph serve in the 1990s.

7 Days in Hell ’s prime target is the absurdly extended matches that the Grand Slam tournaments are known for — particularly Wimbledon, where rain often delays play into the next day, and tie breaks weren’t used in the final set until 2019, making endless matches theoretically possible. The movie delights in the absurdism and masochism of both playing and watching this sport, as rain, streakers, traffic accidents, conjuring tricks, and more conspire to imprison the two players and their audience in an agonizing weeklong death spiral.

The fun comes from 7 Days in Hell ’s extremely broad, even crude, humor (you’re going to need to enjoy dick jokes — this is a Samberg joint, after all) mixed with its savage parody of both the tennis world and the sports-documentary format. The film’s best gag is a brilliantly sustained digression into the history of Swedish courtroom sketch art, delivered with completely straight faces by tennis legends John McEnroe and Chris Evert, as well as the film’s stacked cast of comic actors. It’s a sly satirization of the way docs can use celebrity and misappropriated expertise as a vehicle for all kinds of barely relevant, unexamined information.

Among those self-mocking talking heads, McEnroe is particularly good value throughout. (His best line delivery: “Aaron probably should have forfeited after killing a guy. But he didn’t, because he’s an asshole.” McEnroe remains undefeated at cursing .) David Copperfield also sends himself up beautifully. The pro performers are great, too, with Fred Armisen as All England Club chairman Edward Pudding, MCU veteran Karen Gillan as Charles Poole’s supermodel ex-girlfriend, Mary Steenburgen as his overbearing mother, Lena Dunham as a fashion CEO, and an unforgettable turn from Michael Sheen as Caspian Wint, a pervy, chain-smoking British sports broadcaster. The smooth narration comes from Jon Hamm.

Before things come to a head on day seven of the match, the two players hold a joint press conference. A dispute starts, and they square up against each other, hurling insults, in an argument that briefly turns into a confused, thwarted embrace. Fundamentally, 7 Days in Hell and Challengers are saying the same two things. One: Sport may be about competition and dominance, but it’s a thin line between dominance and desire. And two: Tennis is absurd.

7 Days in Hell is streaming on Max, Hulu, and YouTube ( with a subscription ) and can be rented on Apple TV , Google Play , and other digital platforms.

From Tom Cruise breakdancing to Spice Girls reuniting, reports from Victoria Beckham's bash capture imagination

cruise media kit

Tom Cruise breakdancing, a Spice Girls reunion and tons of A-list celebrities gathering in one location have social media and the general public in awe over Victoria Beckham's 50th birthday party.

Beckham, who celebrated half a century over the weekend, posted about the luxurious soiree Sunday on Instagram.

But some of the most buzzworthy moments went intentionally unrecorded.

"I don’t think I’ve ever felt as loved as I did last night," Beckham's post said. "Thank you all for coming from near and so far!! X"

In the post, Beckham shared pictures of her with actor Eva Longoria, celebrity Chef Gordon Ramsay, her husband, soccer star David Beckham and some of the couple's children.

In another Instagram post, Beckham shared a picture of her and the four other members of the English pop group, the Spice Girls.

"The best gift to be reunited!! Thank you to all my friends and family for celebrating with me. Kisses! xxx," Beckham's post about the Spice Girls said.

Guests 'absolutely dumbfounded' by Tom Cruise's dancing, reports say

Not included in either post were other famous attendees who came to celebrate with the Beckhams at Oswald’s, a private member’s club owned by Robin Birley in London's Mayfair district.

Oswald's is strict about taking photos and allowing social media within the venue , according to the club's member's privacy notice.

Actors Tom Cruise and Salma Hayek both made an appearance at Beckham's party and while one left an impression with their outfit, the other left it all on the dance floor, the Daily Mail reported.

Cruise, who turned 61 in July 2023, stunned guests when he began demonstrating "a series of breakdancing moves, culminating in splits," the outlet said.

"People were absolutely dumbfounded," one guest told the Daily Mail.

Social media reacts to Tom Cruise's 'split mania' and not receiving an invite to Victoria Beckham's party

While no photos or videos of Cruise dancing exist online, social media users continue to poke fun at the expense of the "Mission Impossible" movie star. An X user who goes by @Douggernaut_2 posted a clip of actor Mike Myers dancing in the film "Austin Powers" and said, "Tom Cruise arriving at Victoria Beckham's bday."

Several social media users hearkened back to when Cruise played the Les Grossman character in the 2008 comedy movie "Tropic Thunder." Cruise would hilariously reprise the character during the 2010 MTV Movie Awards and dance to rapper Ludacris' song "Get Back."

"Remember when Tom Cruise did this," X user @charletty_ said Monday in a post reacting to the video of Cruise's full dance routine at the awards show.

During the routine with singer and actress Jennifer Lopez, Cruise does a split on stage. X user @danilo_parks said Monday in a post, "It's real Tom Cruise does the splits mania out there today."

In addition to seeing Cruise do splits and the Spice Girls perform, guests also received goody bags full of Beckham's branded products, including a candle and a fragrance, the Telegraph reported.

All the fun has people wondering where their invite was to Beckham's birthday party, including X user @StaceyVaselaney who said, "I’m sitting here shaking my head wondering why wasn’t I invited to Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday party."
