Hawaii USS Arizona Memorial

MONUMENTS OF THE PAST

No trip to Oahu is complete without paying your respects to the victims of Pearl Harbor at the USS Arizona Memorial. However, there's a lot more to Hawaiian history. You should also learn about Hawaii's Polynesian heritage at Honolulu's Iolani Palace, the former home of the long-ruling Kamehameha dynasty.

Kona Coffee from Hawaii

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Hawaii Cruises Insider

Hawaii is ideal to visit 365 days per year, whether you're looking to laze on a beach, explore the rainforest explorer or scale a volcano. However, prices and crowds increase when kids are out of school and during Christmas and New Year's.

With warm weather year-round, Hawaii is one of the U.S.'s sunniest states. The rainy season goes from November to March, but don't worry too much about the weather during these months; it isn't a constant monsoon — there's simply a greater chance of showers.

Looking for a more remote Hawaiian getaway? Kauai's Napali Coast is renowned but surprisingly uncrowded. If you dock in Kauai, you can drive along the seemingly hidden Napali Coast. Even in Maui, which has become more popular, "secret" beaches (and red ones, like Kaihalulu Beach) provide respite from the crowds.

Plan some slower days during your trip to jibe with the leisure-loving locals. The phrase "island time" isn't a joke.

Don't discount mainstream destinations like Oahu's Pearl Harbor and Kilauea on the Big Island — they're popular for a reason!

While some best practices (like not walking too close to volcanoes) are obvious, be aware of lesser-known laws. For example, it's actually illegal to hike Honolulu's popular Haiku Stairs.

CUISINE POI, PORK, AND POKE

Seafood is an important part of the Hawaiian diet, but there's so much more to enjoy. Visit Hawaii and prepare for a feast like no other, with nods to Polynesia, Japan and even the American heartland.

Hawaii Ahi Tuna Poke Bowl

Poke bowls are a great way to enjoy Hawaii's renowned ahi tuna. Ahi tuna has become famous all over America, most commonly seared and added to Asian-style salads. The best way to sample this Hawaiian favorite, however, is in bowl form. There are several varieties of poke, with modern versions substituting avocado and spicy mayo for classic accompaniments like seaweed and rice.

Polynesian Pork Plate

POLYNESIAN PORK

Is there any meal more Polynesian than a whole, roasted pig? Vegetarians have plenty of choices in Hawaii, but this isn't one of them. After cooking for hours over an open flame, this tender meat is plucked off the bone and plated, or sandwiched in a Hawaiian roll.

Hawaii Taro Root Poi

POI, THE TASTY PASTE

Taro root is a common food in the Asia-Pacific region, but usually not in the U.S. — outside of Hawaii, at least. The purple paste known as poi is a puree of this much-loved root vegetable, and it pairs well with other Hawaiian staples, such as the aforementioned Kalua pork (dip it!) and fresh fish.

These 8 Cruises Make It Easy to Explore Hawaii on Your Next Vacation

Here are our picks for some of the best Hawaii cruises.

cruise ships around hawaii islands

The islands of Hawaii are popular with families, couples, retirees, groups of friends, and really anyone who enjoys warm weather, tropical scenery, and the Aloha spirit of the 50th state. On Oahu, for example, there's bustling Honolulu on the south shore and the more secluded surfing paradise of the North Shore . On the Big Island, the Hilo and Puna regions on the east coast are wet and heavily forested, whereas the Kona region, on the west coast, tends to be much drier.

When is the Season for Hawaiian Island Cruises?

Cruise lines typically visit Hawaii on sailings during two separate time frames, noted as the best time to visit Hawaii . You can frequently find the best island hopping Hawaii cruises during the September to mid-December and the mid-April to mid-June time frames.

These time frames offer the best weather and tend to be the busier months of Hawaii tourism in general. This means that it can be fairly difficult to narrow down your cruise choices as many of these cruise lines have dozens of island hopping Hawaii cruises operating every month!

With so many must-see spots throughout the Hawaiian islands, the most popular months to cruise to Hawaii is during the months of April and May for those looking to snorkel or surf . Hawaiian cruises from mid-December through March can be pricier and more crowded and should be avoided if possible.

The best time of the year for humpback whale-watching in Hawaii is from November to mid-May , but this can also be the rainiest and more expensive months for flights. The best time to find Hawaii cruise deals is between Thanksgiving and mid-December.

There are a couple sailings running Hawaiian cruises during the majority of the summer from mid-June to mid-December as well, but these are far and few between.

How is the Weather on Island Hopping Hawaii Cruises?

The weather on Hawaii cruises differs by the time of year you are visiting. Therefore, you should cater what you pack and shore excursions based on your specific island hopping Hawaii cruise itinerary.

November to March

Hawaii’s wet season typically falls between November and March, with an upwards of 4 inches of rain per month . Therefore, if you are cruising to Hawaii during these popular months, make sure to fully prepare with a rain jacket and umbrella to fully enjoy your Hawaii island cruise.

The sea conditions between mid-December and March include large waves along the north shores of all the Hawaiian islands, especially in the months of December and January. During this time you can see waves topping 40 feet , so if you are inclined to motion sickness, make sure to avoid this time frame or pack some extra Dramamine for during your time on one of the best island hopping Hawaii cruises.

April to Mid-June

If you decide to cruise to Hawaii during the months of April through mid-June, you can expect temperatures ranging between the mid-70s at night and mid-80s during the day . Spring marks the beginning of Hawaii’s dry season , explaining why the majority of cruise lines operate island hopping Hawaii cruises during this time frame.

Planning your Hawaii cruise between the months of April and May is a great time for surfers and those looking to get into the water. This is because the weather is excellent , wave heights are manageable, and water temperatures begin to rise.

Another perk of visiting this island nation on a Hawaiian cruise is the influx of humpback whales in the area– especially around Maui.

Mid-June to August

The final season for Hawaii island cruises is between the months of mid-June and August. Not many cruise lines operate during this time, with Norwegian Cruise Line being the only major line sailing with Pride of America .

The weather during this time frame typically run in the mid-70s at night and mid-80s during the day . These months also tend to be the driest time of Hawaii’s dry season , so make sure to pack plenty of sunscreen, your favorite pair of sunglasses, and a protective sun hat!

The sea conditions during mid-June to August Hawaii cruises include a higher surf around Oahu meaning reduced visibility at sea. The ocean temperatures run around 80 degrees , a temperature ideal for eager cruisers looking to swim or snorkel. This is also the best time for first-time surfers to try the calm Hawaiian wakes.

September to November

This final time to enjoy island hopping Hawaii cruises is between the months of September and November. The Hawaiian dry season wraps up by the end of October, but you can still enjoy temperatures in the mid-70s at night and mid-80s during the daytime .

Once November and early December rolls around, temperatures will sit around the high-60s at night and the low-80s during the daytime . You will also see an increase in the amount of rainfall on the islands during any of the island hopping Hawaii cruises during this time.

The sea conditions during this time frame around completely unpredictable . The wave heights depend on the area of Hawaii you are in and the time you are passing by each of the Hawaii islands on a cruise. From late November to mid-December, many of the Hawaiian cruise locations throughout the island will be experiencing large ocean swells , so there may be an influx of warning signs and flags at the Hawaiian beaches.

If you have never been on a cruise before, you may have some questions about cruise logistics and how to plan a cruise .

First, you will want to get an idea of what your  must-see attractions are. Most island hopping Hawaii cruises follow the popular itineraries of either departing from a California port , Hawaii-only, South Pacific Islands, and Repositioning cruises.

Each cruise line offers a unique experience for every type of cruiser. Then, you can select a date with that perfect cruise line and itinerary to book and mark in your calendar!

I highly recommend  booking a balcony or higher stateroom on your cruise ship as you will not regret waking up to the breathtaking Hawaii cruise landscape from your own private balcony. Also, make sure to avoid the loudest staterooms onboard to completely relax on your Hawaii cruise.

Once booked, you will receive access to more booking options like  onboard packages, shore excursions, and stateroom upgrades . I highly suggest taking advantage of these pre-travel opportunities to have your vacation planned out before you leave on your Hawaii island cruise!

Which cruise lines operate in Hawaii?

Several cruise lines operate in Hawaii, including Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Holland America, among others.

How long is a typical Hawaiian cruise?

Most Hawaiian cruises range from 7 to 15 days, but the duration can vary depending on the itinerary and starting port.

Where do Hawaiian cruises depart from?

Many Hawaiian cruises depart from Honolulu, the capital city of Hawaii. However, some cruises also start from ports on the U.S. mainland, such as Los Angeles or San Francisco.

Which islands can I visit on a Hawaiian cruise?

Most Hawaiian cruises visit the four main islands: Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island (Hawaii). Some cruises might also stop at smaller islands like Lanai or Molokai.

Are there any visa requirements?

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling on a Hawaiian cruise that begins and ends in the U.S., you do not need a visa. However, non-U.S. citizens should check visa requirements depending on their nationality and cruise itinerary.

What’s the best time to cruise to Hawaii?

Hawaii has a pleasant climate year-round. However, the peak season is during the winter months (December to April), while the off-peak season is during the fall (September to mid-December).

What activities can I expect on the islands?

Hawaii offers a wide range of activities including snorkeling, surfing, hiking, luaus, whale watching (during the winter months), and exploring volcanic landscapes.

What should I pack for a Hawaiian cruise?

Pack casual summer clothing, swimwear, sunblock, comfortable walking shoes, formal attire for special nights on the cruise, and lightweight jackets for cooler evenings.

Are there any special health precautions I should be aware of?

No specific vaccinations are required for Hawaii. However, it’s always good to be updated on routine vaccines and consult with your doctor before traveling.

Is seasickness common on Hawaiian cruises?

While modern cruise ships are designed to minimize motion, some passengers may still experience seasickness. It’s a good idea to bring anti-nausea medication or wristbands if you’re prone to it.

Do I need a passport for a Hawaiian cruise?

If you’re a U.S. citizen on a closed-loop cruise (one that begins and ends in the same U.S. port), you do not need a passport, though it’s recommended. However, a government-issued photo ID and proof of citizenship (like a birth certificate) are necessary.

Can I book excursions in advance?

Yes, most cruise lines allow you to book excursions in advance through their website. It’s a good way to ensure you get the activities you want, especially during peak seasons.

What’s included in my cruise fare?

Typically, your cruise fare includes accommodation, meals in main dining areas, entertainment, and most onboard activities. Spa services, specialty dining, alcoholic beverages, and shore excursions usually cost extra.

Do I need to tip on the cruise?

Many cruise lines automatically add gratuities to your onboard account. However, it’s always a good idea to check the cruise line’s tipping policy in advance.

Is Wi-Fi available on the cruise? Most cruise ships offer Wi-Fi, but the speed and cost can vary. Some cruise lines offer packages, while others charge per minute. It’s usually slower and more expensive than what you might be used to on land.

What type of power outlets are on Hawaiian cruises? Most cruise ships cater to international travelers, so they might have a mix of U.S. standard (Type A & B) and European (Type C) outlets. It’s a good idea to bring a universal adapter just in case.

Can I bring my own food and drink onboard? Cruise lines generally have strict policies about bringing food and beverages onboard. While some might allow sealed, pre-packaged snacks, most prohibit bringing alcohol. Always check your cruise line’s specific policy.

Are there age restrictions for travelers? Most cruise lines require that at least one person in each cabin is 21 or older. There are also age restrictions for alcohol consumption and certain activities like the casino.

What dining options can I expect on the cruise? Cruises typically offer a range of dining options from buffets and main dining rooms to specialty restaurants, cafes, and room service. Dietary needs can usually be accommodated with advance notice.

How do I pay for onboard expenses? Most cruise ships operate on a cashless system. At the start of the cruise, passengers typically set up an onboard account linked to a credit or debit card. Expenses are then charged to this account.

Is there a dress code on the cruise? Daytime attire is usually casual. However, in the evenings, some cruise ships have formal nights where passengers are expected to dress up. Always check the cruise’s specific dress code policy.

What safety measures are in place on cruise ships? Cruise ships have comprehensive safety protocols, including lifeboats, life vests, fire safety systems, and trained personnel. Upon embarkation, passengers are typically required to participate in a muster drill to understand emergency procedures.

Can I smoke on the cruise ship? Most cruise ships have designated smoking areas, usually on the outer decks. Smoking is generally prohibited in cabins and public interior areas.

Are there medical facilities onboard? Yes, most cruise ships have a medical facility staffed with trained medical professionals. However, these services are not typically included in your cruise fare and can be expensive.

Do I need travel insurance for a Hawaiian cruise? While not mandatory, travel insurance is highly recommended. It can cover unforeseen expenses related to medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost luggage, and more.

Can I disembark at any island I wish? You can disembark at scheduled ports of call. However, if you don’t return to the ship by the designated “all aboard” time, the ship may leave without you. Always be punctual and aware of the ship’s schedule.

Is there a limit to the amount of luggage I can bring? Cruise lines usually don’t have strict weight limits, but they might have size and number restrictions for convenience and safety. Always check your cruise line’s luggage policy.

An AdventureSmith expert shares his experience on the 8-day Hawaiian Seascapes cruise aboard the 36-guest Safari Explorer.

What’s the first question a newly-married couple gets? “Where did you guys go on your Honeymoon?” We are outdoorsy and adventurous. We enjoy hiking and getting out there, we want to experience things that others could only read about. We didn't want to completely rough it on our honeymoon but we also didn't want the resort or the 2,000 person cruise ship.

As I drift off to sleep I begin to dream of the amazing experiences that I couldn't even have imagined only seven days ago. I dream of diving with manta rays, of Pele, the goddess of fire, of paddle boarding at Shark's Fin Cove and swimming in the cool water under the cascading falls of Moâ'oula.

We loved the luxury of the cruise, combined with the various active adventures. Perfect!

The guides were always enthusiastic, considerate of all passengers' abilities and extremely knowledgeable. The entrees were always fresh and locally sourced. Thank you Arielle for your help and quick response to questions.

The trip leaders were all excellent. Friendly, accommodating, helpful, fun. No request was ever too much, unless it was unsafe.

We've always wanted to see Hawaii but didn't want resorts or large cruise ships. This trip was very active, yet relaxed and intimate -- perfect for us.

This trip exceeded our expectations! We wanted to experience the different islands of Hawaii, and we love water adventures, so this was a perfect fit! We enjoyed all the water activities the most...mostly because that’s what we enjoy, and they were worth the effort. We saw lots of great fish, coral and other wildlife. We loved the whales, they put on quite a show! The group seemed to connect fairly quickly. Some great new friends!

Accommodations Review

The room on Safari Explorer was very nice. Bed was very comfortable!

Crew & Guides Review

The entire crew was amazing. They got to know us within minutes of our first encounter, and always seemed to have a genuine concern for us. Jessica and Lauren were amazing. Both we well informed and found the best opportunities for us in every situation. Always very concerned and watching out for our safety. Both had a great sense of humor, Lauren tells some pretty good jokes! Jessica was always very positive and optimistic, and authentically sincere! They were an absolute delight! I don’t remember the name of the boat driver in Kona, he drove the Black Pearl. He was very informative and a lot of fun.

Simply fantastic. We loved the luxury of the cruise, combined with the various active adventures. Perfect!

We had wanted to see Hawaii, but are not overly enthusiastic about crowds and commercialism. We wanted to see multiple islands, but did not know which ones to pick. This cruise was perfect, since they took us to 4 different islands and arranged lots of great activities. It was especially great because everything (including the alcohol) was included in one price.

Amazingly good food!

Maria and Jess did great jobs as our expedition leader/guide. We thoroughly enjoyed the activities and their enthusiasm.

We appreciated the advance information. And my questions were promptly and accurately answered.

Traveler Advice

There was one hike that was a bit grueling for me, but they were up front about it at the beginning. In spite of that, it was good to be out in the forest in Hawaii and see some things we don't see at home.

Beyond excellent in all ways! Snorkeling every day in a wide diversity of settings was our favorite activity. We also felt that all the excursions were planned so that you were fully immersed in the Hawaiian culture and experience.

Our ship quarters were compact but had ample storage even for over-packers like us.

The entrees were always fresh and locally sourced. Portion size was not overwhelming which I appreciated. You were always able to modify a dish or even request salads or oatmeal. Desserts were amazing, quality over quantity. Great specialty drinks and appetizers.

The guides were always enthusiastic, considerate of all passengers' abilities and extremely knowledgeable.

Thank you Arielle for your help and quick response to questions.

This is a well tuned adventure. The staff are very experienced with the itinerary, the excursions and activities, the ship, and seemed to really enjoy working with each other. The itinerary is busy if you participate in everything, but allows opting out choices for people who want to relax. The route is a slow pace, and flexible to allow for sudden changes in weather or whale sightings. The weather was perfect, and we got up close and personal with whales, dolphins, green sea turtles and many fish while snorkeling. We also got insights into life in the less visited islands of Lana'i and Moloka'i.

The rooms are pleasant, simple and functional. There was plenty of hot and fresh water. The beds are very comfortable.

The food was excellent - local, varied, and very flexible. The pastry chef was even more amazing. For this particular chef, he seemed to love garlic and salt. I would recommend easing up on both.

It's a fabulous adventure.

This was an ideal trip -- so many fun activities in a beautiful variety of Hawaiian locations, and yet without crowds and hustle-bustle. We loved the snorkeling and whale watching most. Both gave us a sense of awe at nature's variety and beauty, and the small groups with expert guides provided a rare atmosphere of intimacy. Everyone in our group of 25 was good-natured and enthusiastic. The night snorkel with manta rays was a disappointment because only one ray appeared that evening, but there were dozens of unruly tourists.

This trip was a blissful contrast to the "touristy" experience one often finds elsewhere in Hawaii. We've always wanted to see Hawaii but didn't want resorts or large cruise ships.  This trip was very active, yet relaxed and intimate -- perfect for us.

The ship was comfortable and welcoming.  Our cabin, while not large, had plenty of storage and was well appointed.

We thought the food was superb.  Both the chef and pastry chef offered a wonderful variety of delights at every meal, and we were always given choices.  The service was always capable and gracious

Our leaders (Jill Q. and Jill B) couldn't have been better.  They were highly knowledgeable, obviously loved nature and Hawaii, always positive and helpful -- they had that elusive balance of energy and even temper.  They went out of their way to give us a beautiful experience!

The information provided and Aaron's helpfulness were great.

Try to plan some time in Hawaii before and after the cruise.  The "before" allowed us to explore another part of the islands -- and gave the airline time to get our luggage to us two days late!  The "after" gives a chance to transition from the relaxation of the cruise to the hassle of the flight home.

10 best Hawaii cruise tips for getting the most from your island-hopping trip

Donna Heiderstadt

A Hawaii cruise solves one of the major hassles of island-hopping in the 50th state: Packing and unpacking as you take multiple inter-island flights in a bid to experience Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Island of Hawaii (aka the Big Island) in a single vacation. Most Hawaii cruise itineraries visit all four of the main islands and offer full days — and, in some cases, overnights — in port, so there's ample time for sightseeing and learning about Hawaiian culture.

On the other hand, compared with a weeklong, land-based visit to just one or two islands, you might find yourself hard-pressed to fit in everything you want to do in each port of call. You need to make sure your cruise ship and itinerary help you reach your vacation goals — not hinder them.

Here are my top 10 Hawaii cruise tips to help you make the most of your sailing and your time in the islands.

Choose your cruise based on your love (or loathing) for sea days

cruise ships around hawaii islands

There are several ways to cruise the Hawaiian Islands and the itinerary you choose depends on factors such as the amount of vacation time you have, whether you want to fly to Honolulu, your openness to spending up to 10 days at sea and the time of year you want to sail.

If you love the actual "cruising" part of cruising, many of the major lines offer round-trip sailings from West Coast ports on itineraries lasting two weeks or more. This means you'll spend extensive time on board your ship as you cross the Pacific Ocean, but only four or five days in port in the Hawaiian Islands. Lines such as Princess Cruises , Royal Caribbean , Carnival Cruise Line , Holland America and Viking offer 14- to 18-night round-trip sailings to Hawaii, usually in the winter months.

If you'd rather spend the majority of your cruise visiting the islands and sightseeing, a seven-night itinerary that sails round-trip from Honolulu or between multiple islands is also an option. The most popular all-Hawaii cruise option is on Norwegian Cruise Line 's Pride of America, which sails round-trip from Honolulu year-round, departing and returning every Saturday.

On a much smaller scale, UnCruise Adventures offers inter-island sailings on the 36-guest Safari Explorer from November to April. The focus is on exploring the natural wonders of Hawaii via active, small-group land and water excursions, and itineraries include lesser-cruised islands such as Lanai and Molokai.

Avoid the holidays and summer months for fewer crowds

The busiest times to cruise the Hawaiian Islands are the last two weeks of December through March, plus July and August. Expect larger crowds as well as higher cruise fares and hotel rates if you travel during these periods.

Instead, choose a shoulder season sailing. May and November are excellent months to cruise the islands. The weather is ideal in May and the summer vacation rush has yet to start. November is also a month with fewer crowds and generally favorable weather. If you visit early enough in May or late enough in November (into early December), you may even catch sight of the humpback whales that winter here, especially in the waters around Maui.

Book a pre- or post-cruise hotel stay if embarking in Honolulu

If your cruise embarks and/or disembarks in Honolulu, you won't actually have much time to enjoy Oahu's sights and attractions unless you arrive a day or two early or add a night or two post-cruise. Extending your Hawaii vacation with a hotel stay can add to your relaxation, help you adjust to the time change and allow you to fully enjoy much of what Hawaii's most populous island has to offer, from Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head and Pearl Harbor to the scenic North Shore.

If you're truly strapped for vacation time, a round-trip Honolulu itinerary can efficiently deliver a four-island experience and let you see a bit of Oahu with a disembarkation-day excursion that combines a Pearl Harbor or North Shore tour with an airport drop-off.

Plan your sightseeing in advance

cruise ships around hawaii islands

Unlike some ports in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, Hawaii isn't a destination where it's easy to just walk off the ship and explore on foot. The ports in Honolulu, Kahului (Maui), Nawiliwili (Kauai) and Hilo (island of Hawaii) aren't located near top sights, while Kona, also on Hawaii, is a tender port where ships anchor offshore and ferry passengers in tender boats to a dock, although some shops and restaurants are within walking distance.

The solution? Once you've booked your Hawaii cruise, do some research and decide what you want to see — and what the best way is to do that. Your strategy can include a combination of shore excursions booked via the ship or arranged independently and exploration in a rental car.

For example, if your cruise overnights on Maui, you may want to explore the island on your own in a rental car the first day, visiting a beach, a resort area or Upcountry and the summit of Haleakala, and then book a snorkel trip or a ship's shore excursion along the Road to Hana for the second day when you'll need to be back on board in time for sail away.

Kauai is easily explored on your own via car, whether you're heading into the Waimea Canyon to go hiking or seeking out the perfect beach. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is just 45 minutes from Hilo on the Island of Hawaii, meaning you can drive there yourself and visit more areas, including Chain of Craters Road, than on standard cruise ship shore excursions.

Choose a convenient rental car pick-up location

Opting for the rental car route can also be quite cost-effective, since the daily rate can be much less than the cost of two excursions and offer major savings for a family of four. Mixing your sightseeing up with independent exploration can also alleviate "tour bus burnout."

With a little pre-travel research, you can pinpoint the nearest rental car location to the port. Some rental car companies used to provide shuttles from certain locations to the port, but that is no longer the case.

For example, there's an Enterprise location that's an easy 10-minute walk from the cruise terminal in Kahului, Maui. The only downside is that the location is only open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., so if you're renting on a day when you're overnighting in port and you want to keep the car to head to dinner or a luau, arrange to return it to the nearby Kahului Airport (OGG) location, where vehicles can be returned after hours; then take an Uber or taxi back to the ship.

On Kauai, there are multiple national rental car agencies at Lihue Airport (LIH), which is a five-minute drive (by taxi or Uber) from the port at Nawiliwili Harbor. The cruise port in Hilo on the Island of Hawaii is about 8 minutes' drive from Hilo International Airport (IHO), home to Avis, Enterprise, Thrifty, National and other agencies, while both Thrifty and Hertz have locations within walking distance of the tender pier in Kona.

Pack for both sun and rain

The Hawaiian Islands get lots of sunshine — 270 days on average annually — but rainfall is also frequently in the forecast. This is especially true from December through March and most notably on the windward sides of each island, which ironically are the most scenic areas known for their lush landscapes and cascading waterfalls.

This variability is important to remember when packing for your Hawaii cruise. Alongside those multiple bathing suits, cover-ups and sun hats, be sure to stash a travel umbrella and a lightweight rain jacket. The latter will also do double duty as a protective layer should you venture to the summit of Haleakala, where winds can be fierce and the elevation often drops temperatures into the 50s and 60s.

Don't forget to taste local specialties

cruise ships around hawaii islands

Many cruise passengers fall into the trap of rushing back to their ship for lunch and dinner — why pay extra to dine in port, right? But if you always eat on board you'll miss out on Hawaii's unique culinary experiences. And most of them are quite affordable.

If you like sushi or ceviche, be sure to try poke, which is raw fish (most often ahi tuna) marinated with soy sauce, sesame oil and green onions and typically served in a bowl. Another popular midday option is the traditional Hawaiian plate lunch (or mixed plate), which consists of favorite Hawaiian foods such as loco moco (a hamburger patty topped with brown gravy and a fried egg), kalua pork (slow-cooked pork shoulder), lomi lomi salmon or even grilled Spam, served with scoops of white rice and macaroni salad.

If you opt to explore the North Shore of Oahu, a tasty lunchtime indulgence is locally farmed garlic shrimp served up by assorted "shrimp trucks" parked along the Kamehameha Highway.

For an afternoon cool down, have a shave ice, which as its name implies is a cone or cup of shaved iced drenched in sweet fruit syrup, or enjoy a few slices of ripe, freshly cut Hawaiian pineapple or other tropical fruit such as mango, lychee or sweet apple bananas. Other flavor-packed snacks not to miss are macadamia nuts and taro chips. Indulge in fat-laden carbs by trying malasadas, tasty Portuguese fried donuts.

Serious foodies should make time to sample the islands' signature Hawaii Regional Cuisine. Developed over the past three decades by a dozen top Hawaiian chefs that include Roy Yamaguchi ( Roy's ), Peter Merriman ( Merriman's ) and Beverly Gannon ( Hali'imaile General Store ), the movement focuses on local and sustainable ingredients that emphasize Hawaii's melting-pot culture and fusion of Polynesian, Asian and Portuguese flavors. If your ship is overnighting in Oahu or Maui, reserve a table in advance for dinner; Hali'imaile General Store on Maui is also open for lunch.

Seek out reef-safe sunscreen

Hawaii has been at the forefront in passing legislation to protect vulnerable coral reefs from bleaching and erosion caused by certain ingredients in sunscreen products. In early 2021, the state banned the sale of sunscreens containing the chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate, so look for the words "reef safe" on any sunscreen you purchase for use in Hawaii.

Using sunscreen in the islands is key if you want to prevent severe sunburn, which can happen quickly, especially in the middle part of the day. Hawaii's location (it is about 1,300 miles from the equator) means the sun's rays are more intense than they are in much of the mainland U.S. You'll also be spending the majority of your time outdoors, so as added protection it's a smart idea to also pack an SPF-rated swim shirt or rash guard to wear while enjoying water-based activities.

Prepare to hit the beach

All beaches in Hawaii are, by law, open to the public. That doesn't mean, however, that you can just head to a resort, select a lounger and act like you're a guest. Instead, there are public access points for popular resort beaches, such as Wailea and Kaanapali on Maui, Waikiki on Oahu and Poipu on Kauai. You'll be able to stake a spot on the sand, generally to either side of a resort's beach chairs — so bring along beach towels and/or pareos as well as water and snacks.

Don't overlook Hawaiian history and culture

cruise ships around hawaii islands

It's certainly tempting to spend your time in port enjoying Hawaii's natural beauty and its myriad water-based activities, but be sure to take off your mask and snorkel from time to time and get to know the islands' unique history, language and culture. Opportunities to learn abound — and it's fun to be able to use a few key Hawaiian phrases while in the islands. In addition to aloha, which means hello and is used as a greeting, words you'll likely hear are mahalo (thank you), hale (house), kama'aina (local person), ohana (family), honu (turtle) and pupu (appetizer). But the most fun word to learn to pronounce is the 21-letter name of the Hawaiian state fish: humuhumunukunukuapua'a.

Cultural sites also give context to the Hawaiian way of life. When in Honolulu, you can delve deeper into the islands' natural history with a visit to the Bishop Museum or head to Iolani Palace to see how Hawaiian royalty lived in the late 19 th century before the U.S. annexed the islands. The Royal Hawaiian Center in the heart of Waikiki also offers free cultural programming that includes hula and ukulele lessons.

On Maui, you can step back in time with a visit to the artsy Upcountry town of Makawao in what's known as paniolo (cowboy) country. And on the island of Hawaii, it's possible to visit the Puʻuhonua National Historical Park, also known as the Place of Refuge, an ancient spiritual sanctuary for defeated warriors who would be protected from death there.

We are deeply saddened to hear about the wildfires currently impacting the town of Lahaina in Maui.  We have a very special relationship with the people and islands of Hawaii, as we sail to the beautiful state year-round.  It is a magical destination and one that is highly sought out by our guests for its natural beauty, culture and unparalleled experiences. To support local relief efforts, we have donated $50,000 to Maui United Way and are encouraging others to join our efforts by donating at mauiunitedway.org .  In addition, together with our partners, we have collected and will be donating over $150,000 in supplies such as food, clothing, and mattresses to the Hawaii Community Foundation, whilst also activating our network of suppliers to support with in-kind donations. As of September 3, 2023, we have recommenced our weekly overnight calls to Kahului, Maui following the guidance and encouragement of the Maui community, Hawai'i state governor Josh Green and the Hawai'i Tourism Authority.

Best Hawaiian Cruise Destinations

cruise ships around hawaii islands

Rather than choosing the best Hawaiian island to visit, unpack once and explore four of the top Hawaiian islands when you cruise to the Aloha State with Princess®. Travel on the Road to Hana in Maui, visit Pearl Harbor on Oahu, hike to cascading waterfalls on Kauai and walk along the black-sand beaches of the Big Island. Whether traveling to Hawaii for a honeymoon, family vacation or quality time with your best friends, here are the best Hawaiian Islands to visit for every occasion.

Best Hawaiian Island for Your Honeymoon

Nothing says romance quite like Kauai. As one of the quieter islands, it allows couples to share special moments amidst the spectacular landscapes. Home to Waimea Canyon — the Grand Canyon of the Pacific — Kauai is brimming with emerald mountains, copper valleys and azure waters that are known to inspire love stories. Boat to waterfalls and sea caves, then jump into the sparkling sea, hand-in-hand with your spouse, and get close to rainbow-colored marine life. Hike through lush rainforests and along calm beaches for a special moment with your loved one. Or, soar in a helicopter to enjoy aerial views of both land and sea while descending deeper into the dramatic canyons. From the romantic scenery to the whimsical excursions, Kauai is truly one of the best Hawaiian islands for honeymooners.

Best Hawaiian Island for A Family Vacation

Thanks to its abundant wildlife, culture and outdoor activities, Maui is known to be one of the best Hawaiian Islands for a family vacation. Famous for whale watching, this serene island invites you to sail into the waters for a chance to see beloved humpback whales. Kids can listen for them singing beneath the sea while parents stay camera-ready for their shy appearance above the surface. Or, travel along Hana Road in a limo-van where you can stop for a waterfall swim and enjoy a beachside picnic. With adventures for family members of any age, it’s no wonder that Maui is one of the best Hawaiian Islands to visit with your loved ones.

Best Hawaiian Island to Visit with Friends

Between the tranquil beaches and slower island pace, Hawaii is the perfect destination to reset and recharge with your friends. But, you don’t have to forgo the energy and nightlife of a city on your trip to the Aloha State. Oahu is the best Hawaiian island to visit with small or large groups as it offers something for everyone. Sail along the city-lined shores on a two-hour sunset dinner cruise with your favorite friends. Attend a luau and savor traditional Hawaiian food together and meet other guests at your table. Or, stop into any of the tiki-style bars and toast with companions, old and new. As the most popular destination in the Aloha State, Oahu is undoubtedly included among the best Hawaiian Islands to visit for those looking to disconnect from reality and reconnect with friends.

Best Island to Visit in Hawaii for Your First Time

The best island to visit in Hawaii for your first time depends on your desired itinerary. Adventurous guests may want to hike the trails of Kauai whereas those looking for cultural exploration may prefer the Big Island. With each destination offering something unique, the best way to experience all that Hawaii has to offer is on a cruise vacation where you can get a taste of every island.

Best Time to Cruise to Hawaii

The summer temperatures and warm ocean breezes never go out of season in Hawaii. Whether you want to honeymoon in April or explore in December, you can revel in the state’s summer-like conditions all year round. So, when debating the best time to cruise to Hawaii , the answer is simple — anytime with Princess.

Hawai'i Cruise Details

Day-by-day details  for Molokai to Kona, Hawaii (*or reverse); variations may occur to maximize your experience.

Day 1 – Molokai, Hawaii* – Embark

Welcome to Hawaii! You’ll be transferred to our hospitality area on Molokai. Later, the Captain and crew greet you with smiles and champagne as you board the awaiting Safari Explorer. Settle in and enjoy dinner (the first included meal of the rip) aboard the yacht, before a presentation about your week ahead.

Day 2 – Molokai

A warm Aloha spirit gives you a sense of Hawaii long ago. No stop lights, no high-rises, just a welcome slower pace. “Talk story” with locals and experience their land and traditions as few visitors ever do. You’ll hear legends and lore, then take in a cultural lesson in taro patches and poi making, or hike to a towering waterfall in Halawa’s cathedral valley-one of the island’s most historic places. At the Molokai Museum, discover the history of this ancient homeland as you enjoy an evening paina (feast), complete with a home-style Hawaiian jam session.

Day 3 – Lanai

Gear up for a day of play on the “Private Island.” Thousand foot sea cliffs line the shore and ancient volcanic plugs sit both above and below the water’s surface as host to a wide diversity of marine life. Snorkel, paddle board, kayak, explore by skiff, or stretch your legs on hike-whichever activities suit your fancy. Take a stroll to ancient Hawaiian historic site. Learn about the islands plantation days and unique history.

Day 4 – Maui

Today we may snorkel among coral gardens teeming with underwater life and a known sea turtle habitat. The Humpback National Marine Sanctuary located between Lana’i, Molokai, and Maui provides front-row seats as you cruise through these productive breeding grounds searching for dolphins, whales, and other marine life. Look above and below the surface. Then stretch your legs in Lahaina for an afternoon amble through this historic town or take a leisurely beach stroll.

Day 5 – Captain’s Choice Exploration

Leave it to your Captain and crew to seek out and unveil the best opportunities the islands hold in store today. Dramatic volcanic backdrops, marine life sightings, and chances for snorkeling, kayaking, and paddle boarding are all possible!

Day 6 – Kona Coast

Fringed by coconut palms, Kealakekua (more commonly known as Captain Cook Bay, the fateful location of his unlucky demise) offers a morning filled with corals, sponges, and tropical fishes all set to the tune of the rich history of the Hawaiian Dynasty of Kings. From the tiniest fish to the widest stretch of coral, it’s all spectacular. Depending on weather and your mood, spend the day in the water or let us do the work, and explore the rugged coastline on a skiff ride.

Day 7 – Puu Waawaa State Wildlife Sanctuary

Active adventure guests are off to Puu Waawaa State Wildlife Sanctuary where you and a local naturalist climb the trails above the Kona coast. Head up Hualalai Volcano, then set out on a long hike up the cool and misty slopes, complete with natural history interpretation. Hike through dryland native forest and past lava tubes, and peer into a pit crater from its edge (if you’re up for it, you can even go inside a lava tube). A shorter option boasts views of craters, fissures, and lava tubes.

While more relaxed guests visit with a ranger (and become a Hawaii Junior Ranger if you choose), hike the trail to petroglyphs, or check out the Kaloko fishpond and remnants of the Aiopio fish trap. Bird watch or relax on the white coral sand beach—you may spot a green sea turtle.

For your final afternoon, relax onboard or go for one last dip. Celebrate with the Captain’s Dinner and a photographic recap of your adventure.

Day 8 – Hawaii, the Big Island – Disembark

As the Safari Explorer docks at Kawaihae Harbor, you’ll be transferred to the Kona Airport for your return flight home. Breakfast will be the last included meal of the trip.

*For trips departing from Hawaii, the Big Island to Molokai, the itinerary will be in reverse.

Some of Norwegian’s most exciting itineraries are in Europe, where the line is a significant player. It offers a wide range of itineraries in the Mediterranean and across northern Europe.

Norwegian will typically deploy around half of its 19 ships to the continent from spring to fall, making Europe its biggest focus for more than half the year. Norwegian also sometimes offers Europe cruises in the winter — albeit typically with just one ship.

Norwegian’s Mediterranean sailings provide the chance to see such iconic destinations as Barcelona in Spain; and Florence, Rome and Naples in Italy in a single cruise. Or, you can sign up for a Mediterranean cruise that focuses on the Greek Islands.

In northern Europe, Norwegian will take you to such famed Baltic cities as Stockholm; Tallinn, Estonia; and Helsinki in a single sailing.

In past years, such Baltic trips have also included a multiday call at St. Petersburg, Russia — traditionally the highlight of any Baltic sailings. However, like all major cruise lines, Norwegian pulled St. Petersburg from Baltic itineraries for 2022 and 2023 in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

As of the publishing of this guide, Norwegian had opened bookings for all of its Baltic sailing through late 2025, and St. Petersburg remains off the schedule for all of them. The line hasn’t said when it might return to St. Petersburg.

For those looking to explore northern Europe, Norwegian also offers itineraries that zero in on Iceland, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Norwegian’s Europe voyages range widely in length from just three nights to a whopping 19 nights.

Among the longest sailings that Norwegian offers that include calls in Europe are one-way trips between Piraeus, Greece (the port for Athens), and Dubai. Typically lasting 18 or 19 nights, these will often include stops in Israel and sometimes Greece, as well as visits to Egypt, Jordan, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

In Northern Europe, Norwegian ships mostly sail out of Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen, England’s Southampton and Reykjavík in Iceland.

In the Mediterranean, the line’s hubs are Barcelona, Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Venice in Italy, Piraeus (the port for Athens) in Greece, and Istanbul.

The Caribbean and the Bahamas

The Caribbean and the Bahamas have always been a big area of operations for Norwegian. In fact, for a long time, the regions were so much the focus that the line included “Caribbean” in its name. Up until 1987, Norwegian was known as Norwegian Caribbean Line.

These days, Norwegian usually keeps just two of its 19 vessels in the Caribbean and the Bahamas year-round (in recent years, the year-round ships have been Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Escape, both sailing to the Caribbean and the Bahamas from Florida ports). However, it really ramps things up in the region in the winter, when it deploys a large portion of its ships to the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

Norwegian currently has 15 of its 19 ships scheduled to sail to the Caribbean and the Bahamas for at least part of 2024 — including its newest and most advanced ship, the 3,219-passenger Norwegian Viva.

Norwegian offers a broad range of Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries from more than half a dozen home ports. If you’re looking for something short, the line has you covered in the form of lots of quick, three- and four-night trips from Miami to the Bahamas.

It also offers an abundance of seven-night sailings to Caribbean and Bahamian ports, as well as a handful of longer trips in the region that range from nine to 14 nights.

At the core of the line’s Caribbean and Bahamas program are its seven-night sailings, which break down into three broad categories:

  • Eastern Caribbean voyages
  • Western Caribbean voyages
  • Southern Caribbean voyages

A typical seven-night Norwegian sailing to the Eastern Caribbean includes stops in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; and Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian’s private island in the Bahamas.

Norwegian’s seven Western Caribbean voyages will typically include a visit to Roatan, Honduras; Harvest Caye, Belize; and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico.

The line’s Southern Caribbean itineraries will often bring visits to Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, St. Lucia and St. Kitts. They typically begin and end in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

When sailing to the Caribbean, Norwegian ships generally sail out of Miami, Port Canaveral and Tampa in Florida; and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The line also offers Caribbean sailings out of New Orleans, New York City and, occasionally, Panama City, Panama.

Norwegian is the undisputed leader in Hawaii cruises. Most cruise lines that offer sailings to Hawaii only offer a limited number of such trips during a few months each year. Norwegian, by contrast, offers sailings around the Hawaiian Islands out of Honolulu every week of the year — the only cruise line in the world to do so.

Norwegian’s Hawaii voyages are also more intensely focused on Hawaii than the Hawaii trips offered by most other lines. This is because Norwegian offers its Hawaii cruises on one of the only cruise ships in the world that meets the regulatory requirements allowing it to spend all its time in the destination.

Norwegian’s Hawaii trips take place on Norwegian’s 2,186-passenger Pride of America, which has the rare distinction of being both U.S.-flagged and U.S.-crewed. By law, only such a vessel can cruise full-time in Hawaii without regularly traveling long distances to foreign ports.

An iconic presence in Hawaii, Pride of America has been permanently dedicated to the archipelago since its debut in 2005. It offers a repeating seven-night itinerary that begins each Saturday in Honolulu and brings the chance to visit four different Hawaiian islands on a single seven-night trip.

Beginning and ending on the island of Oahu, the itinerary includes two days each on the islands of Maui, Kauai and Hawaii. The two-day visit to Maui involves an overnight stay at the port of Kahului.

The two-day visit to Kauai involves an overnight stay at the port of Nawiliwili. The two-day visit to Hawaii is split between a call at Hilo and a call at Kona.

Norwegian isn’t the biggest player in Alaska cruises. The giants of cruising to Alaska are Princess Cruises and Holland America , which are sister lines that control a large percentage of the market.

Still, Norwegian typically sends three to five vessels to Alaska every summer, and its big, activity-filled ships are a popular pick with families looking to visit the destination.

The Alaska cruise season is a short one, lasting roughly from May to early October.

For 2024, Norwegian plans to deploy four ships to the Alaska market for the full season:

  • Norwegian Encore : Norwegian’s biggest vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. It will call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, plus Victoria, British Columbia. It will also visit Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing.
  • Norwegian Sun: This ship will operate a mix of nine- to 11-night sailings to Alaska out of Seattle. The list of port calls varies based on the length of the trips.
  • Norwegian Bliss : The 4,002-passenger vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. On most sailings, it will call at Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan and Icy Strait Point in Alaska, plus Victoria, British Columbia. It will also visit Alaska’s Endicott Arm for glacier viewing. Some sailings at the start and end of the season substitute a visit to Skagway and Glacier Bay National Park for the stops in Sitka and Icy Strait Point, and drop the visit to Endicott Arm.
  • Norwegian Jewel. The 2,376-passenger ship will operate one-way voyages to Alaska between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Seward, Alaska. The trips typically include stops in Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan, plus a visit to either Glacier Bay National Park or Icy Strait Point.

In recent years, the 2,018-passenger Norwegian Spirit also has spent its summers sailing in Alaska, but its Alaska voyages for 2024 were canceled as a result of the vessel being chartered to another company.

The appeal of the one-way sailings on Norwegian Jewel is that they can be combined with Norwegian-organized land tours of Alaska lasting from three to six days to create 10- to 13-night “cruisetours.”

The land tour portion of such trips brings visits to such well-known interior Alaska locations as Denali National Park and the town of Fairbanks.

Norwegian usually deploys two ships on Bermuda runs every year — one out of New York City and one out of Boston.

In both cases, the sailings offered are mostly seven nights in length and include a two-night stay in Bermuda.

For 2024, Norwegian will devote one of its biggest and newest ships, the 3,802-passenger Norwegian Joy, to Bermuda. It will run out of New York. The line’s 2,394-passenger Norwegian Gem will sail to Bermuda out of Boston.

In addition, the line’s 3,969-passenger Norwegian Getaway will operate a handful of sailings to Bermuda out of New York during the early part of 2024, and the 3,963-passenger Norwegian Breakaway will operate a few sailings to Bermuda out of New York toward the end of 2024.

The line’s relatively new Norwegian Prima will operate a single Bermuda sailing out of New York at the end of 2024.

While most of Norwegian’s Bermuda sailings are seven nights in length, the line also sometimes offers a few shorter four- and five-night Bermuda sailings and, occasionally, a longer, nine-night Bermuda sailing.

Note that the shorter Bermuda sailings can offer very little time in the country, sometimes as few as nine hours.

Bottom line

Norwegian offers a wide range of itineraries in destinations around the world, from the Caribbean to Asia. However, you’ll find the most choices among Norwegian itineraries in the Caribbean and Europe.

The line is also well-known for voyages around Hawaii and to Bermuda. Its Hawaii sailings, in particular, are something of a rarity in the industry.

The Bay of Islands is an area located on the east coast of Far North District (Northland Region) of New Zealand's North Island. Currently, it is one of NZ's most popular fishing, cruise ship- and tourism travel destinations. Port Russell (locode NZRUS) is the Bay of Islands' principal cruise port, while Paihia is the main tourist town. The town of Russell (aka Kororareka) was established in the early-19th-century as New Zealand's first permanent European settlement and seaport.

The Bay of Islands is approx 60 km (37 mi) northwest of Whangarei City (Northland Region's capital and NZ's northernmost city). Cape Reinga (Aupouri Peninsula's northwesternmost tip) is approx 210 km (130 mi) further to the northwest. The Bay of Islands groups a total of 144 isles, the largest of which is Urupukapuka (208 hectares / 514 acres / 2,1 km2).

Regularly scheduled ferries interlink with daily crossings Urupukapuka with Russel and Paihia. Whangarei has population around 55,000. Paihia (approx 60 km / 37 mi north of Whangarei) has population under 2000. Russel has population under 1,000.

Bay of Islands cruise terminal

Bay of Islands cruise port (New Zealand) has no dock that is able to handle passenger ships. Cruise vessels anchor in the bay (near Russell) and passengers are offloaded via the ship's tender boats.

  • Most cruise lines tender to Paihia, but it depends on the ship's daily arrangement.
  • A ferry service is available between Russell and Paihia.
  • At Waitangi (western side of the bay) there are free of charge shuttle busses to Paihia.
