Board your private bus and settle into your seat, relax while taking in the beauty of the French countryside. Half way through your journey enjoy a pit stop which gives you a chance to grab some breakfast or just stretch your legs. On your approach to the island, your expert English speaking guide will provide insight on the UNESCO-listed island. Listen to interesting anecdotes about the history of this abbey, the island and the surrounding region of Normandy. Upon arrival on the island, your expert guide will make sure you experience the most fascinating attractions, the most famous of them all, the hilltop Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel. Then take some time to yourself and enjoy it at your own pace.

For a more casual and characteristically Breton feed, stop by one of Mont Saint-Michel’s crêperies and feast on galettes (buckwheat pancakes) paired with Normandy cider. After taking in the breath-taking sights that Mont Saint-Michel offers and indulging in fine cuisine your air-conditioned coach will return you to Paris.

Mont-Saint-Michel, an exceptional tourist site

The Mont-Saint-Michel can be discovered during a day trip from Paris. It is one of those timeless sites cut off from time that offer you their most beautiful face with each visit. It is a moving dive into time, the confrontation between men and nature that gives an impression of the end of the world.

A fortified rock between Brittany and Normandy

Only 360 kilometers from Paris, the second most visited tourist site in France welcomes more than 3 million tourists each year, with an influx of up to 20,000 visitors per day during the summer season. Sometimes an island, sometimes a rock erected in the middle of a sea of sand, it is the central character of a picture that is recomposed from hour to hour.

Going to the Mont-Saint-Michel with Paris City Vision is the assurance of a quality guided tour even on a busy day. You will not miss any of the place's curiosities, you will learn more about the history of the abbey, its cloister, and contemplate the high tides that occur in the bay every year. Your coach will take you to the parking lot where you can take a shuttle that spans the sands along a surprising road or go on foot to enjoy a more progressive discovery. Parking lots, shuttles, footbridge, these works have saved this natural wonder from silting up and allow you to continue to enjoy this magical place

The abbey, between tourist attraction and spiritual life

As far as the memory of men goes, spirituality has always been very strong in these wild and isolated lands. Its geographical situation, between sky, sea and earth, already fascinated our distant ancestors: it would have hosted, a very long time ago, druidic cult practices and a pagan stone would have been pulled out by Aubert on the Mont Tombe.

But the notoriety of the place, well before the arrival of tourists and organized trips, is based on its very lively spiritual life. As early as the Middle Ages, the old Mont-Tombe welcomed a first oratory dedicated to the archangel who gave his name to the place and took the name of Mont-Saint-Michel-au-péril-de-la-Mer. The prestige of this first religious monument is reinforced by the legend that surrounds its construction: the Christian implantation on this exceptional site would have been wanted by the archangel in person, appearing in a dream to the bishop Saint-Aubert and marking him on the forehead to testify to the mystical character of his dreams.

If, among the innumerable visitors who go on excursions and visit Mont-Saint-Michel, they go there for religious reasons, the majesty of the abbey, based on successive constructions spread over several centuries, contributes very strongly to the popularity of the site. The statue of Saint-Michel slaying the dragon, gilded with fine gold and more than 4.6 meters high with its wings, still rises more than 156 meters above the sea.

More than just a rocky island

Its geographical location, which places it on the border between the duchies of Normandy and Brittany, has made this rocky islet a strategic issue of primary importance. Its ramparts were built in the 13th century, strengthened and reworked several times, protecting it from attacks. Besieged in 1424 during the Hundred Years' War, it resisted attacks for ten years, the battle led by Montois Louis d'Estouteville in 1434 putting the Mount definitively safe from the English assaults who gave up trying to take this stronghold by force.

From these troubled times, you will appreciate the fortified enclosure and will probably take a picture of it during your visit. The architecture as a whole participates fully in the medieval identity of the place.

V - Child Policy

All reservations made for children under the age of 18 years old must be made by an adult and we must be informed at the time of booking exactly how many children are in your party and their ages. This is vital information as it allows our guide to prepare the proper child sized equipments for the bike tours and the booster seats for all day trips/excursions that use one of our vans. All reservations made for a minor under the age of 18 years old must also include the reservation for an adult who will be 100% solely responsible for the safety and well being of the child while on the tour. Every child, under the age of 12 years old, partaking in a bicycle tour will be required to wear a helmet and a reflective vest as per French Law. The adult who accompanies the child agrees to the responsibility of choosing a properly sized helmet, adjusting the helmet, and keeping the helmet on the head of the child during the whole tour. Blue Fox Travel has helmets in multiple sizes for you to choose from at no cost. Don't forget: Children who will be riding in a baby/child seat, on a tandem attachment bike, or in a booster seat in one of our vans absolutely MUST have their seat reserved beforehand. We NEED to know exactly what your child will need before they show up. Please make it clear in the “Special Requirements” section of our booking form.

VI- Child Bike Policy

Children who will be riding on their own may be subject to a very short test run before the tour starts in which they will be expected to demonstrate: that they are well suited for their bike’s size and settings, that they know how to brake properly and that they are, in general, good cyclists who can be trusted to follow their tour guide in a safe manner. We own 20” and 24” kids bikes (size of the wheel). Adult bikes are 26”. If the guide, or manager, finds that the child is not, for any reason, a good enough cyclist then the guide, or manager, has the right to refuse to let the child follow the tour on a personal bike. This means they will either be asked to ride on one of our ‘tandem attachments’ which is attached to the back of a parents bike OR asked to ride in a child seat attached to the back of a parents bike. If the child refuses the change, then the guide or manager has the right to cancel the reservation, and not allow you and your child on the bike tour. Refunds will not be issued if your reservation is cancelled because of your child not being able to cycle and their refusal to ride attached to you. Baby seats are for kids that are between the ages of 1 and 3 years old (max weight 22 kg (48 lbs)). The Adventure Begins

Rise early to board your private bus from Paris. Once you’ve settled into your seat in the early-morning, you’ll have the chance to catch up on sleep, before we stop for a mid-route pit stop during which you can stretch your legs and pick up some breakfast should you wish.

As we approach the magnificent island, which depending on the tides is either encircled by water or by mud flats, your knowledgeable guide will prepare you for what is to come by providing some background information on the awe-inspiring UNESCO-listed island. Listen to interesting anecdotes about the history of this abbey, the island and the surrounding region of Normandy, whose stunning scenery should be visible through the windows of the bus.

Medieval Island Mont Saint Michel

The island is strategically placed between Normandy and Brittany. Due to the hundred years war between England and France, the island's importance became even more prominent as a stronghold and defensive structure. The island would serve as a military stronghold for the region, warding off British attackers during recurrent sieges.

Upon arrival on the island, your guide will show you around during an orientation tour that will ensure you manage to see all the most important attractions, leaving you outside the most famous of them all, the hilltop Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel. After getting to grips with the layout and major points of interest, you will have a few free hours to explore by yourself at a sightseeing pace that matches your desired speed and stamina. You might want to soak up the splendor of the abbey interior with an audio guide tour or simply stroll the wonderfully picturesque streets in search of the perfect photo opportunity.

Mont Saint-Michel Abbey

Mont Saint-Michel abbey began humbly enough in the eighth century, when – citing orders from Archangel Michael himself – bishop Aubert built a church on this small and secluded rock island. The church was later expanded during the medieval era, becoming more and more vertiginous with every addition, and attracting an increasingly large number of pilgrims.

During the French revolution, the monks were kicked out of the monastery and the area became a prison for refractory priests. In 1811, a decree declared that the abbey would hold common law prisoner and some political prisoners like Armand Barbés and Auguste Blanqui.

You might want to soak up the splendor of the abbey interior using our convenient self-guided audio app or simply stroll the wonderfully picturesque streets in search of the perfect photo opportunity.

Please note that your self-guiding app should be download on your smartphone prior to tour. Credentials and download instructions will be provided on your voucher upon booking.

Sit-down or Lunch on the Go

You may also want to sit down for lunch at an establishment of your choosing. Options range from wooden rafter-adorned dining rooms serving rustic meat-focused fare to sophisticated restaurants with bay-view terraces where seafood from the surrounding waters takes center stage. For a more casual and characteristically Breton meal, stop by one of Mont Saint-Michel’s crêperies and feast on galettes (buckwheat pancakes) paired with Normandy cider. Your guide will recommend restaurants to quell your cravings and match your budget.

In late afternoon, re-board the bus for the return journey to Paris, which will see passengers back in the City of Lights well in advance of bed time. This fabulous tour of Mont Saint-Michel offers a hassle-free way to explore the island during a day trip from Paris with plenty of free time ensuring you don’t have to adhere to a rigid sightseeing schedule.

We only got 2 hrs there what wasn't enough time to explore the Abbey and to something to eat.

Wonderful Day

Years ago, I saw a picture of a fairytale-looking castle that was built on an island surrounded by water. After doing some research about France, I discovered that this picturesque island is Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, France. It is so surreal-looking that the Disney movie Tangled modeled their fictional kingdom off of this real life fairytale castle. Being a four hour drive away from downtown Paris, this is definitely pushing the limits of a Paris “day trip.” But I really wanted to see this mythical looking tidal island in person, so we booked a Mont Saint-Michel day trip with The Tour Guy. The coach bus was really comfortable and made the trip seem short. Our guide did a great job explaining France and Mont Saint-Michel’s history on the bus, and we were very thankful to have transportation provided for us because the island feels like it’s in the middle of nowhere! In the abbey, we had an audio guide that explained the church’s history. Throughout the day we learned that Mont Saint-Michel became a place of worship all the way back in 708 AD! Over the centuries, it withstood several sieges and became a prominent place for religious pilgrimages. The island itself is actually an entire village stacked onto a relatively small area. Like most places in medieval times, the working class occupied the lower areas, the knights lived in the middle, and the church was built all the way at the top. It was amazing getting to wander the narrow streets, stroll through the abbey, and walk on the tidal ground surrounding the island. Walking around the grounds, I felt like we were transported back in time. It was an amazing experience getting to see this magical island – I’m so glad The Tour Guy offers a day trip so that we didn’t have to worry about the details of getting there and could just fully enjoy it!

The ancient ramparts guarding the island are inspirational. Many invaders have attempted to take these walls without success. You get great views across the sea and toward the French mainland.

The winding streets leading up to the monastery are lined with amazing medieval buildings. Over 60 buildings on the island are listed historical buildings. There are more historic buildings than people who live on the island!

Explore the fascinating abbey at your own pace or take an audio tour for more detailed information. The ancient cloisters, monks’ dining hall, and Romanesque abbey church are beautifully preserved. Admire the medieval architecture that has stood so strong for almost a thousand years.

4. Best Value Tour: Full-Day Mont Saint Michel Tour From Paris

  • Departure Point : The Palais de Chaillot Architecture Museum
  • Departure Time: 7:00 AM
  • Includes : English speaking guide, transportation to Mont Saint-Michel, and tour of the island

This is a great day trip from Paris for anyone interested in French culture and history. Mont Saint-Michel has featured in key parts of France’s long history.

The fortress island has associations with William the Conqueror who invaded England from Normandy. It served as a symbol for French defiance against English tyranny during the Hundred Years War.

During your journey to Mont Saint-Michel, your guide will entertain you with stories from the history of the abbey. Before you even reach the island, you’ll be familiar with its history and enthusiastic to see the stones that match the images in your head.

On the island, your guide will lead you around to point out interesting structures and landmarks. There is so much on the island that this will only be an introduction.

You’ll then be free to explore the places you’re most interested in on your own. If you wish, you can take an audio-guided tour of the abbey or explore it by yourself at your own pace.

5. Best Small Group Tour: Small-Group Mont St Michel Tour & Cider Tasting From Paris

  • Departure Point : 6 Avenue de Wagram, Paris
  • Includes : English speaking guide, transport to Mont Saint-Michel, cider tasting, and tour of the abbey

If you’re interested in medieval history, you’ll love this excursion to Mont Saint-Michel. During the Hundred Years War, the English knights failed to capture this formidable island fortress. Today, all are welcome to climb its quaint winding streets to visit the ancient buildings above.

Enjoy a comfortable minibus transfer through the Normandy countryside from Paris. Normandy is renowned for its apples, and during your journey, you’ll make a stop to sample the local cider—Calvados and Pommeau.

When you reach Mont Saint-Michel, you’ll be greeted by the familiar sight of the ramparts of the island standing brave over the waves…or the sands, if the tide is out.

But don’t worry about access. In recent years, a road bridge has been built to improve transport to the mainland. On the island, you’ll be mesmerized by the charm of the medieval structures and narrow streets.

The low population of the island combined with continuous use has left its beautiful Gothic structures in remarkable preservation. It is a tangible reminder of the feudal philosophies of its age. The Church sits atop the hill just as God is above all.

The surrounding grand halls are representative of the noble classes, and the lowly fishermen’s huts are at the base of the settlement.

You’ll be transported from Rennes Railway Station to Mont Saint-Michel by private minibus. On the island, you’ll experience a 45-minute guided tour of the village and enjoy a walk out into the bay. Your naturalist guide will help you understand the unique ecology of the surrounding sands.

A further 2-hour tour of the fortified walls and Medieval city streets will help you understand the rich history of the island. It was once an important fortification which the English failed to capture despite several serious attempts during the Hundred Years War.

The highlight of your visit to the island will be a visit to the famous 11 th -century abbey on top of the hill. Inside, you’ll be impressed by the well-preserved Gothic architecture of one of the most beautiful churches in France.

Paris Travel Guide

In TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards 2019, Paris was ranked as the #2 Top Destination in the World. This is no surprise for a city famous for its food, art, and architecture.

Whether you’re looking for gourmet meals, a romantic getaway, a place to immerse yourself in fine art, or a family vacation, France’s capital city is a great destination for you.

Airports & Entry

The two best ways to travel to Paris are by air and by train.

Paris boasts 3 busy international airports which together form the world’s 5 th busiest airport combination and a major transport hub for Europe. Paris’ three international airports are Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris-Orly, and Beauvais-Tillé.

Paris is well served by a selection of budget airlines including Easyjet, Ryanair, French Bee, Transavia, and Norwegian. You can secure better deals by booking at least a month in advance and using a ticket price comparison website, like Omio . You can literally save hundreds of dollars by choosing the right flight. Because Paris is such a major transport hub, flights are very competitive.

Usually, you will find flying both the most affordable and easiest way to reach Paris. However, if you are traveling from a neighboring country, it is worthwhile checking into high-speed trains.

Paris is linked to neighboring countries by a network of high-speed rail links operated by SNCF . Although these trains take longer than flights, they transport their passengers from city center to city center. Flying, of course, usually requires a transfer to an airport some distance away from the city.

For example, if you’re traveling from London to Paris, a Eurostar train that passes through the famous Channel Tunnel will provide a relatively hassle-free journey when compared to flying. Also, in most cases, that journey will be quicker than flying because of the extra time taken up waiting for connections at the airports. And it also gives you bragging rights for using one of the world’s most famous undersea tunnels.

When planning your journey, compare the costs of flights and high-speed trains and decide which is the best option for you. Often flying will be cheapest, but if the cost isn’t too much more, the train will be relatively more comfortable and involve fewer complications.

Planning Tips

Paris is an amazing destination that should be on everyone’s bucket list. Here are 5 tips to help you on your way. On your first day, taking a guided tour of the city will help you zero in on areas you would like to spend more time in will help a lot.

Tip #1: Watch out for Mondays and Tuesdays

When planning your itinerary for your stay in Paris, note that many major attractions, such as the Palace of Versailles and the catacombs, are closed on Mondays. A few attractions are closed on Tuesdays instead, including the Natural History Museum and the Pompidou Center. There are various major attractions open every day, like the Eiffel Tower and Disneyland Paris, so go there on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Tip #2: Buy unique souvenirs and gifts

Paris is, of course, the center of fashion. However, there is one relatively unfashionable item of dress that you might want to pick up during your stay in France’s capital city. The béret is the cliché headwear of France, and you’ll see cheap versions “made in China” in every souvenir shop you pass. But, if you want to buy the real thing, look out for clothing stores that sell bérets made in France. La Cerise Sur Le Chapeau is a well-known chain store around Paris that stocks French bérets.

However, if you’re looking for something distinctly Parisian that few people will own, how about a piece of the Eiffel Tower? Victor Lustig once sold the Eiffel Tower twice in an elaborate con, but this opportunity isn’t a scam like that. During repairs to the tower, inevitably some parts need to be replaced. The removed rivets are turned into unique souvenirs only available in the Eiffel Tower’s official gift shop.

Tip #3: Stay safe while visiting Paris

Although Paris is considered a relatively safe city, don’t forget that Kim Kardashian had all her bling stolen while she was staying in a vacation apartment there. Just like any other busy city, you will find purse-snatchers and pickpockets in crowded locations, especially around tourist hotspots.

Just use common sense. Keep your passport and other valuable documents in a hotel safe. Keep your money in a money belt. Don’t wear ostentatious jewelry in public places.

If you see abandoned packages or luggage in a crowded public place, especially a Metro station, distance yourself from the package and call 112. Paris is not a stranger to terrorist attacks.

Tip #4: Book in advance, especially during the summer

Paris is a popular destination in summer and during Christmas and Easter. Ensure you book your hotel rooms and any tours you wish to join well in advance of your vacation. You often get better air flight deals when you book in advance, and that is especially true during the summer.

The best time to visit Paris for bargain prices and fewer crowds is during the shoulder season—just before or just after summer. The weather is still fine, but there are simply fewer tourists.

Tip #5: Learn a few French phrases before traveling to Paris

The French are a proud people, not least of all Parisians. They are rightly concerned about the dilution of their native tongue by English words and phrases from Hollywood movies and internationally popular songs. So, if you’ve ever heard someone say that French people are rude, it’s probably because the person telling you expected them to speak English.

Almost all French people you’ll meet speak English. But if you greet them in French and use a few words and phrases like “merci” and “s’il vous plaît”, they will be more likely to treat you with respect in return. You don’t need to speak more than a handful of phrases, and you don’t even need a good accent. Parisians will appreciate your effort.

Restaurants & Eating Out

Paris is recognized by many as the heart of the culinary world. Many internationally-acclaimed chefs trained there, and the terms used in gourmet kitchens worldwide originate in Paris. You won’t have any problem finding good food in the capital of France.

Traditional croissants are a great breakfast treat in any Parisian café. The best area for traditional cafés is the Boulevard Saint-Germain, a tree-lined avenue in the 6 th Arrondissement. The Neo Café is highly rated. But if you’re in a hurry and want your breakfast on the go, grab a fresh pain-au-chocolat from one of the family bakeries (patisseries).

Bo&mie in the 2 nd Arrondissement is the top-rated patisserie in Paris and close to attractions such as the Louvre and the Pompidou Center. In the early morning, you’ll often see Parisians walking out from patisseries with freshly baked baguettes. They do love freshly baked bread rather than long-life bread found on supermarket shelves.

If you want to find the most exclusive, Michelin-stared restaurants, explore the area around the Champs-Elysées. That’s where you’ll find many of the oldest restaurants in Paris. But, if you have a less discerning palate, the same area is where you’ll find McDonald’s, Burger King, and Starbucks. The top-rated French gourmet restaurant here is Pierre Gagnaire on Rue Balzac. Be prepared to spend at least €200 per person and you will require a reservation.

While in Paris, you should try at least one distinctively French dish, like coq au vin or ratatouille. If you’re feeling courageous, you could opt for snails or frogs’ legs…just so you can say that you did.

You should consider taking a French cooking class while you are in Paris. Learn from the best and make the dishes you love at home!

Snacks & sweets

For traditional street food, try the amazing crepes that you can buy from many street corners. You can eat these tasty pancake treats while you walk with savory or sweet fillings.

Before you leave Paris, ensure you sample some of its amazing desserts. The Crème Brulée is a delicious traditional sweet, and meringues are sweet and satisfying but also very messy.

Nightlife & Entertainment

Paris is famous as a getaway for romantic weekends, so of course you’ll find a rich variety of nightlife.

The most famous nightspot in Paris is undoubtedly The Moulin Rouge in the area of the 18 th arrondissement known as Pigalle. This historic cabaret club is where the Can-can dance was created and a favorite haunt for many famous celebrities over the past century, from Toulouse-Lautrec to Frank Sinatra. You can enjoy a cabaret here for around €145 ($160).

However, be aware that Pigalle is regarded as the red-light district. Watch out for overly friendly ladies and gentlemen inviting you into dance clubs in this district.

Champs-Elysées

The most exclusive nightclubs, restaurants, and live music venues are found in the 8 th arrondissement, around the Champs-Elysées. Many of the clubs here are impossible to enter unless you are a recognizable celebrity, royal, or billionaire.

You’ll need to dress up smart to get into any of the decent clubs here. And if you do enter, be careful whose drink you nudge and spill! But a word of caution — the exclusive clubs in this area also include a few strip clubs! They’re very different from the strip clubs in Pigalle, but still strip clubs. One to watch out for is the famous Whisper Club .

An example of a bar in palatial settings where you might be concerned about scuffing the silverware and smearing the crystal is simply called Le Bar in the George V Four Seasons Hotel.

This same area is also home to more touristy haunts which you won’t find so difficult to enter. However, these often contain more tourists than locals, so don’t expect a uniquely French experience. The club with the most laid-back reputation is the Dogstar Club . You might get past the bouncers without a $10,000 watch on your wrist and a designer cocktail dress.

Place Vendome

The 1 st arrondissement is literally the center of the city around the Louvre and where you’ll find boutique hotels with historic bars frequented by celebrities and the beautiful rich. Most of these hotels have strict dress rules to enter the bar, and you’ll need a healthy income to survive the night.

The area around the Metro Bastille, on the borders of the 4 th , 11 th , and 12 th arrondissement, is where the younger and more relaxed crowd hang out. You’ll find decent nightclubs, cafés, live music venues, and dive bars frequented by local 20-somethings.

Check out the Niki Club on the Rue de Lappe for a casual night, or maybe the Black Star Club in Passage Thiere if you enjoy live rock music or jazz.

If you enjoy the LGBT scene, the Marais district in the southern part of the 3 rd arrondissement and northern part of the 4 th is where you’ll find welcoming cafés, bars, and live music venues where all genders and sexualities are made welcome. Café Cox is one bar legendary for its welcomes.

Getting Around

When you’re trying to find your way around, you might get confused by the way addresses sometimes emphasize the arrondissement, sometimes the name of the area, and sometimes the zip code. To simplify this a little, the last two digits of the zip code are the arrondissement number. So, the Eiffel tower is at 75007, meaning it’s in the 7 th arrondissement.

You might be surprised to discover it’s not in the 1 st arrondissement since it’s so central to the city. However, the way the arrondissements work is beginning in the Louvre — the 1 st arrondissement and true center of Paris (where the king’s palace is) — and then radiates out from there. The first layers are numbered from the north clockwise and wrap around the central arrondissements. The arrondissements get larger as you get further from the center.

Most of the main attractions are found in arrondissements 1 through 8, which form the core of the city. This means that it’s possible to walk from attraction to attraction. But if you want to go a little quicker, Paris boasts an affordable and efficient public transport system. And the best way to get around is on the Metro.

With 300 Metro stations, everywhere in Paris is within a 10-minute walk of a station. A Paris Visite Travel Pass provides unlimited Metro travel within a specified zone for a set period of time. The Travel Pass may also be used on trams, buses, and the RER underground train system. A 1-day ticket for Zones 1 to 3 costs €12 ($13).

There are even more bus stops than Metro stations and bus services run every 5 to 7 minutes. This means that buses are often more convenient for shorter journeys than the Metro. Since a Travel Pass allows you to swap between the Metro and buses, you can simply take the bus when it’s most convenient but use the Metro for longer destinations. To learn which would be most convenient for your planned journey, you can check the route maps on the RATP (Regie Autonome des Transports) website .

Hire bicycles

Like many capital cities in Europe, Paris has a public bicycle hire scheme. Around the city, you’ll find 1,800 Velib bike stations with 24,000 bicycles. You simply require a credit card with a chip to rent a Velib bike.

There are over 16,000 taxis in Paris. Taxis are an expensive but convenient mode of transport. You can take a taxi from a taxi rank or hail one down in the street.

While you can opt to hire a car in Paris, be aware that Parisian drivers have a bad reputation for safety. Also, the congested roads are difficult to navigate and parking places rare. If you really want to enjoy your time in Paris, walk or use public transport.

Accommodations

When choosing where to stay in Paris, you should consider why you’re there. If your main interest is in taking your family to Disneyland, Paris, then you’ll find accommodation near there more spacious and much more affordable than most places in the city.

However, if you want to visit the historical and cultural attractions, then you should confine yourself to the central areas between the 1 st and the 8 th arrondissements, where hotels are within walking distance of the main sites.

Below, I’ve divided the kind of accommodation by area. However, this is only a rough guide. You’ll find 5-star luxury hotels in the budget and family areas, and I’ve previously stayed in a very cheap family guesthouse about 2-minutes-walk from the Arc de Triomphe.

You’ll find a lot of budget accommodation around the 5 th and part of the 6 th arrondissements simply because these areas are a little further from the most popular tourist attractions and famous streets.

But if you don’t mind a little more walking, the area of Montmartre is still pretty central and boasts character-filled, winding streets. And with Metro stations dotted all around the area, it’s as convenient as any other central location if you plan to get around on public transport.

An example budget hotel in this area is the Hotel Marignan  on a quiet street in the Latin Quarter. This historic hotel has hosted many famous guests, such as EE Cummings, and is within walking distance of Notre Dame.

The Rive Gauche area of the rest of the 6 th and the 7 th arrondissements is an easy walk from places like the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower. This makes the affordable hotels there perfect for families with young and impatient kids who just want to get there quick. Many of the hotels in this area vary between small boutique hotels and cozy, family-run hotels.

The aptly named Eiffel Rive Gauche Hotel is super close to the Eiffel Tower and would provide a great base for your family to explore the French capital.

While a few of the most exclusive hotels are in the 1 st arrondissement, the main selection of high-class hotels is found along the Champs-Elysees in the 8 th arrondissement. You’ll notice this coincides with where the most Michelin-starred restaurants and high-class bars and clubs are, many of which are attached to or inside the luxury hotels.

In terms of distance, the 1 st and 8 th arrondissements are neighbors, with the Champ-Elysees running between the Louvre area in the 1 st and the Arc de Triomphe in the 8 th . Government officials and important people have long made their home in the 8 th arrondissement, and it is considered the cultural heart of the capital.

A great example of a luxury hotel in this area is the Hotel de Crillon , which looks more like a palace or museum than a working hotel.

Although it’s fairly inland, Paris still benefits from an oceanic climate with cool but mild winters and pleasantly warm summers. Generally, the city sees light rainfall distributed evenly through the year, though sudden heavy showers can occur.

Paris gets coldest in January, with an average daily high of 45 0 F and a low of 37 0 F. During spring, the temperatures warm so that by April it reaches an average high of 60 0 F and low of 45 0 F. Spring is a great time to visit Paris because the flowers are blooming all around the city and the summer crowds have yet to descend upon the city.

The hottest month of the summer is July, with an average high of 77 0 F and low of 60 0 F. That’s when the city becomes crowded with visitors from all around the world. By October, the average high drops to 61 0 F and the low to 49 0 F. The fall is another great time to visit because the weather isn’t too cold but the crowds have diminished and the trees have donned their beautiful autumnal cloaks.

Attractions

The main attractions radiate out from the center of the city, which is the 1 st arrondissement.

The Louvre Palace in the 1st arrondissement was the main residence of the Kings of France from the 14 th century onward. Today it is much better known as the home of the world’s greatest art museum, the Musée du Louvre . If you want to see such world-famous masterpieces as the Venus de Milo sculpture and the Mona Lisa painting, then you should head straight for the glass pyramid in front of the grand palatial building.

The great cathedral of Notre-Dame in the 4 th arrondissement is so spectacular and famous that I cannot justify leaving it out of this list. However, please note that the Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Paris is closed for at least the next four years and maybe more.

After the devastating fire of April 2019, the cathedral and nearby surrounding area were closed to public access until sufficient repairs can be made to make the area safe once again. You can still admire its amazing Gothic architecture from a distance and maybe catch a glimpse of some of the restoration work in progress.

Eiffel Tower

The most visited attraction in the center of Paris is the Eiffel Tower in the 7 th arrondissement. Although this renowned iron tower was erected as a temporary structure in 1889, it is still standing strong and looks good for another few centuries of service. The fact that it was the world’s tallest building when built is eye-opening when it is compared to the Empire State Building in NYC or the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, but it is still the best place for a panoramic view in Paris.

Arc de Triomphe

This triumphal arch in the 8 th arrondissement was commissioned by Napoleon but wasn’t built until 1836, long after his death. It stands on a huge roundabout at the northern end of the Champ-Elysees and is one of the most recognizable and photographed monuments in the capital. The Arc de Triomphe is also home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Flame of Remembrance that is kept alive in daily ceremonies.

You have to leave the city and travel 12 miles southwest to reach the Palace of Versailles , where Louis XIV moved his court in the 17 th century. Now this famous palace is a grand museum full of amazing reminders of the power of the great Sun King. Look around the interior and exterior of the palace for the many sun-emblems reminding visitors who lived here. But the true highlight for many visitors is the beautiful formal gardens that surround the palace.

Disneyland Paris

Also outside the city, despite its name, is Disneyland Paris, 20 miles to the east. This famous theme park is the most visited attraction in France. If you’re visiting Paris with children, you’ll probably want to devote two days to Disney because there are two separate parks here: Disneyland Park opened in 1992 and Walt Disney Studios Park opened in 2002. Inside both, you’ll find thrill rides for all ages as well as classic attractions, like actors dressed up as your favorite Disney characters and Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. The easiest way to get to Disney Paris is with a shuttle and entrance ticket deal .

Best Ways to Visit Mont Saint-Michel from Paris

Paris to Mont St Michel by Car

Time needed: 4-5 hours (one way)

Of course, this is the best option to visit Mont St Michel on a day trip from Paris, but if you don’t have a car, we don’t recommend renting one only for visiting Mont St Michel.

For those arriving by car, there is a dedicated car park on the mainland, 2.5 km away from the island, to preserve the maritime beauty of the place. Once you have parked the car, you must walk to the Place des Navettes and board the free shuttle to the island. Place des Navettes is 800 m from the car park, and the shuttles stop 450m away from the island itself, so there is a fair bit of walking involved too. The shuttles operate every day from 7:30 am to midnight.

Paris to Mont Saint Michel by Train

Time needed: 3,5 – 4 hours one way (depending on the train)

Take a TGV from Paris’ Gare Montparnasse to Rennes , from where Keolis buses travel to Mont St. Michel up to four times a day (follow the signs “Exit North”, and “Bus Station”).

You can also change trains at Rennes and take a local train from Rennes to Pontorson-Mont St-Michel train station.

Once you arrive at the edge of the mainland, you can either take a shuttle or walk across the 900 meters-long causeway ( Pont Passerelle ) that connects the mainland to the island. The shuttle will cost you €2 shuttle one way.

Mont Saint Michel Tours from Paris

Usually, a Paris to Mont St Michel tour is the most comfortable way to get to Mont Saint-Michel. Sit on the van and enjoy the landscape without worrying about directions, transfers, or train connections.

Nowadays, Mont Saint Michel tours are not ‘follow the umbrella’ tours. You will be exploring the abbey and the fortress at your own pace with the help of an audio guide, and you can decide where and when to have lunch.

This small-group Mont St Michel tour from Paris by minibus or van comes with skip-the-line tickets and a special stop to taste some of the famous Cider Pommeau, and Calvados drinks so typical of Normandy.

And why not extend the fun? Book this 2-day guided tour from Paris and visit two of the most famous areas in France, Mont Saint-Michel and the Loire Valley Castles.

History of Mont Saint Michel

day tours from paris to mont st michel

In the past, the island was called  Mont Tombe . Most probably, this name referred to a stone or a megalithic monument on the island for a pagan cult.

In the 8th century, the bishop of Avranches constructed an oratory in honor of the archangel St. Michael after having a vision.

In the 10th century, the Benedictine monks settled on the island at the request of the Duke of Normandy, Richard I, and they started to build an abbey.

Very quickly, the abbey became a major place of pilgrimage for the Christian West but also a center of medieval culture where a large number of manuscripts were produced, preserved, and studied.

Mont Saint Michel’s strategic fortifications (13th – 16th centuries) helped the island to survive The Hundred Years’ War, the French War of Religion, the French Revolution , and the hard times under Napoleon I.

Mont Saint Michel and its bay are listed as Unesco World Heritage since 1971.

Things to Do on a Day Trip to Mont St Michel from Paris

1. visit the abbey.

The  Mont Saint-Michel Abbey  is a fine example of French Gothic flair architecture with a Romanesque touch. It is a construction built over the centuries on a very particular topography, so it isn’t easy to compare it with other abbeys or cathedrals in France.

Take the time to admire the beautiful structure, with its pointed arches and narrow windows, sculptures, and other details that decorate the building.

The island is the permanent home to around 50 people (including the monks in the abbey). Medieval houses and narrow cobble-stoned streets wind up their way up the rocky island, and there’s a magical atmosphere (when there are no crowds).

The Grand Degré is the name of the iconic set of stairs that lead up to the abbey from the Grande Rue. Take your time to climb up the stairs to the abbey, and admire the abbey’s grand architecture perched on the top of the hill, as well as the beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding bay and countryside.

Book this insightful private walking tour  with an enthusiastic guide and explore the area on a custom journey. Learn about its changes over the centuries and the most fascinating histories – the better and less known – of Mont Saint Michel.

TIP: we always recommend spending one night on-site, within the island walls. When the day crowds are gone, the atmosphere at Mont Saint-Michel is magical. Check out the best hotels in Mont Saint-Michel for a memorable trip.

3. Taste Mont Saint Michel’s Famous Dishes

Your day trip from Paris to Mont Saint-Michel wouldn’t be complete without tasting some local specialties. And there’s no need to worry about food in Mont Saint Michel, there are places to eat within the walls for everybody!

Mère Poulard’s fluffy omelet is the most famous dish to eat at Mont Saint Michel, and it is supposed to be the best omelet in the world! La Mère Poulard has been around since 1888, located close to the King’s Gate and in front of the Tourism Office. Book your table well in advance and be ready to pay around 30 € for a traditional omelet (but hey, it’s an experience!)

Another must dish in Mont Saint Michel is the Lamb (AOP) Prés salés du Mont-Saint-Michel . These are the lambs that you see eating the salty grass around the island. The lams are carefully selected to resist harsh climatic conditions, the risk of getting bogged down, prolonged walking, and halophilic vegetation. The meat is very tender and has an exquisite, slightly salty taste.

To taste the authentic, best lamb of the pré salé (AOP), book a table at  Le Pré Salé  (Route du Mont Saint-Michel | Bp 8, 50170 Mont-Saint-Michel).

4. Explore the Bay with a Local Guide

day tours from paris to mont st michel

For your day trip from Paris to Mont St Michel, consider exploring the bay with a local guide.

Low tides in Mont Saint Michel are also interesting. It will let you explore the island’s surroundings and admire the medieval fortress and the abbey from another point of view. Close to Mont Saint Michel is another granite islet, Tombelaine, which also has a rich history directly linked to that of Mont Saint Michel. The bay is home to a wide variety of birds and seals.

During the summer, you can walk around the bay barefoot, but in winter (November to February), the tours are with boots.

Escape the bustling city and visit a place that’s a fortified village, an imposing abbey, and an isolated island rolled into one. Taking a Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel day trip from Paris makes for a unique (and somewhat magical!) experience.

Mont Saint Michel, a tidal rock island capped with a tall medieval abbey, is located in the expansive harbor where Brittany and Normandy meet and is surrounded by some of the fastest tides in the world.

It was an inspiration for the visual style of The Lord of the Rings and is one of France’s Top Ten Icons.

The enthralling Mont-Saint-Michel, or Saint Michael’s Mount, is an absolute must-visit when you get to France. Plus, there is more than enough to do and see at this enormous abbey and monastery to fill a whole day.

The islet was originally called Mont Tombe and was founded by an Irish hermit.

The bishop of Avranches, according to legend,  got a visit from the Archangel Michael in 708 and was instructed to construct a church on the island. Its impressive fortifications kept it from being conquered even by the powerful English.

William Longsword, the second king of Normandy , formally annexed the mount into Norman territory in 933.

By the time the French Revolution began, there were so few monks living at the abbey that it was turned into a jail.

The prison was shut down in 1863, and by 1874 it had been designated a historic monument thanks to the efforts of people like Victor Hugo.

For centuries Mont-Saint-Michel was supported by French Royalty , survived the English Armies, and drew in pilgrims in search of religious knowledge.

Now, Mont Saint Michel is an icon of France and one of its most breathtaking destinations.

To help you visit this enchanting islet with less to zero hassle, we have put together a guide to visiting Mont Saint Michel day trip from Paris so that you can get the most out of your trip.

From the different ways to get there to some practical tips, this guide has got you covered.

Practical tips for the day trip

  • November and early December are the best months to visit Mont Saint Michel because of the lack of tourists. Fewer tourists also show up at the end of January, February, and March.
  • If you really want to visit Mont Saint Michel in the summer but don’t want to deal with the throngs of tourists, we recommend going either very late in the day (after 3 p.m.) or very early in the morning (before 9 a.m.).
  • If you are visiting Mont-Saint-Michel during the summer, make the most of it by staying until around 7 pm for the stunning light and sound show, which usually has an extra charge.
  • Keep in mind that Mont Saint Michel has a lot of stairways and steps. Those who use wheelchairs or have mobility issues will find it challenging to get around here. It’s best to have a companion when you visit.
  • To fully enjoy your exploration of Mont-Saint-Michel, it’s essential to equip yourself with a reliable pair of walking shoes.
  • It is advisable to avoid carrying a large bag. The bustling streets are filled with narrow passageways and a sea of people. When considering purchasing souvenirs, it’s a great idea to invest in a practical and versatile item like a foldable tote bag.
  • If you want to buy souvenirs, it’s best to steer clear of the stores in Mont-Saint-Michel. Instead, visit Maison Pélerin, conveniently located just a short 5-minute drive away. Here, you can buy MSM items such as caramels, black garlic sourced from the bay, and a heavenly collection of cookies, lovingly baked by the talented sisters of the Abbey.

A bit of History of the Mont Saint Michel

View of Mont Saint Michel from the walkway

The legend goes that archangel Michael appeared to Aubert of Avranches, the bishop of Avranches in 708 in a vision and directed him to construct a church in his honor.

The bishop obliged and after years and years of hard work, the Abbey of Mont Saint Michel was born.

Over the years, Mont Saint Michel became a pilgrimage place, a home for various monks, and at one point a prison during the rule of Napoleon since it was perfectly fortified and a bit far from everything which was the perfect environment for prisoners.

Mont Saint Michel also faced a number of sieges over the years but due to its strategic location and fortification, it survived them, including the Hundred Years’ War, French wars of religion, and the French Revolution.

You can read more historical details about Mont Saint Michel here .

Now that you know a little bit of history about this wonder, let’s look at the complete guide to planning your trip to Mont Saint Michel from Paris.

How to Get From Paris to Mont Saint Michel

One of the most frequently asked questions is how to get from Paris to Mont Saint Michel!

To simply answer that question, you can go by car, by train, by bus, or on an organized tour.

The option you choose entirely depends on your budget and your style of travel, and to help you choose the most appropriate option, below is a detailed guide on how to use each.

View of the Abbey of Mont Saint Michel

How to Get from Paris to Mont St Michel by Train

Unfortunately getting from Paris to Mont St Michel by train is not that direct since there is no direct train (except in some months) and you might need to switch lines and hop on buses in between.

However, it is one of the most economical and the best way to get to Mont Saint Michel.

Most trains to Mont Saint Michel leave from Gare Montparnasse in the 14th arrondissement but bear with me, I will give you all the possible options.

1st Option: Take a train from Gare Montparnasse to Villedieu-les-Poêles . This should take around 4 hours. From here, there will be a bus to take you to Mont Saint Michel parking which takes around 45 mins to 1 hour. This is probably the easiest and cheapest Paris to Mont St Michel Train . You’ll need to purchase your ticket on the SNCF website in advance as it requires booking seat numbers. I should also note that this one ticket caters to both the train and bus rides.

Interior of the Abbey of Mont Saint Michel

2nd Option: Take a TGV from Gare Montparnasse to Rennes which takes about 2 hours. From Reins, take a bus to Mont Saint Michel (the bus runs only a couple of times a day, so make sure you plan your time well). If you don’t feel like riding the bus for long, you can switch lines and take another train (TER) from Reins to Pontorson-Mont St-Michel and then a bus from Pontorson-Mont St-Michel to Mont Saint Michel parking .

3rd Option: Take a Normad train (Trains written on Region Normandie) from Paris Saint Lazare to Caen . Take another train (TER) from Caen to Pontorson-Mont St-Michel and then a bus to Mont Saint Michel parking .

Please note that no tourist bus or car can go beyond the Mont Saint Michel Parking. From the parking area, you can either walk to the Mont or take a free shuttle that runs every 10 minutes, sometimes shorter though.

How to Get to Mont Saint Michel From Paris By Tours

If you’re someone who hates planning and figuring out all the already complicated ways of getting there, the best option is to take tours from Paris to Mont St Michel.

With this Mont St Michel day trip tour from Paris , you’ll easily be transported to Mont Saint Michel in an air-conditioned bus (and back to Paris at the end of the visit) and eliminate the trouble of switching trains or even missing them if you don’t plan well.

The tour comes with a knowledgeable tour guide to take you through all the history of this monument and an entrance ticket to the abbey. And if you want to visit at your own pace, this tour also offers that option.

You can also check out more tours from Paris to Mont Saint Michel from the widget below and choose the most appropriate one. These tours are offered by GetYourGuide — my trusted platform for booking tours.

How to Get to Mont St Michel from Paris By Car

This is probably the most flexible option if you’re planning a Paris to Mont St Michel day trip. You choose when to go and how many stops to make, and if you decide to visit other areas near Mont Saint Michel, it will be quite easy.

The only downside to this is that you’ll have to drive for about 5 hours to and fro which can be a lot considering that after the drive, you’ll still have to visit the Mont which requires a lot of climbing.

To get there by car, you can either take the A13 motorway towards Caen , then the A84 towards Avranches Rennes .

Alternatively, you can take the A11 motorway towards Le Mans , then A81 towards Fougères , and finally A84 towards Caen .

The second option is quite longer compared to the former but it gives opportunities to see various popular attractions along the way.

As I mentioned above, you won’t be able to go in your car to the entrance of Mont Saint Michel.

As a way of preserving the place and reducing the number of cars in the small parking just outside the walls of the Mont, there is now a dedicated parking 2km (1.2 miles) from the island. From there, you can either walk or take the free shuttle.

La Grande Rue in Mont Saint Michel at night

How to Get From Mont St Michel to Paris

While it’s important to know how to get to Mont Saint Michel from Paris, it’s also equally important to know how to get from Mont Saint Michel to Paris. Below are 2 options to consider.

Option 1: If you came by train using the 1st Option (See details of the 1st option above), you can still go back in the same exact way. Take the bus from the parking (the driver will mention the exact time the bus will leave for Villedieu-les-Poêles) and then a train from Villedieu-les-Poêles back to Gare Montparnasse .

Option 2: There is a bus from Mont Saint Michel (it has a station on the wooden walkway near Mont Saint Michel and others near the hotel area) to Pontorson Mont St Michel . You’ll need to pay for the bus ticket when you board. It’s just a few Euros. From Pontorson Mont St Michel, take a Nomad train to Gare Saint Lazare in Paris. Some trains are direct but for some, you may need to switch trains. If that’s the case, the train goes from Pontorson Mont St Michel to Caen and then from Caen to Paris Saint Lazare .

Which option should you choose?

If you’re on a day trip from Paris to Mont St Michel and came using the “1st Option”, you can still go back in the same way, however, you can also go back to Paris using “Option 2”.

Ultimately, the option you choose to go back depends on the time you want to leave Mont Saint Michel as both options have slightly different departure times and the train station you may want to stop at back in Paris.

Opening Hours for Mont Saint Michel

view of Mont Saint Michel

This may come as a surprise that there are no set hours to enter Mont Saint Michel (I am referring to entering the walls of the Mont). Just like any village/city, Mont Saint Michel doesn’t close. You enter as early as you want and leave as late as possible.

However, the Abbey of Mont Saint Michel has opening and closing hours.  It stays open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. between September and April and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. between May and August. It also stays completely closed on December 25, January 1, and May 1.

Best Things to Do at Mont Saint Michel

Whether you’re on a day trip to Mont St Michel from Paris or spending the night there, these are some of the cool things to do.

1. Visit the Abbey

Visiting the Abbey is one of the fun things to do on a day trip from Paris to Mont Saint Michel.

The Abbey is the highlight of any visit to Mont Saint Michel. It took over 1000 years to construct and the labor and pain can be seen from both outside and inside.

From the outside, a tower spirals the sky with a golden statue of Archangel Micheal and when you step inside, you’ll be treated to an architectural wonder.

Some of the must-visit rooms in the abbey include the monks’ rooms, cloisters, chapels, the Abbey Church, and more.

Don’t worry about looking out for these places, if you book this Abbey entry ticket and pay for an audio guide (to be bought on-site), you’ll know exactly where to go and what you’re visiting.

Please note that visiting Mont Saint Michel is free but you’ll have to buy a ticket to access the Abbey.

2. Take a Stroll Along La Grande Rue

La Grande Rue in Mont Saint Michel

Impossible to miss, La Grande Rue is the main street inside Mont Saint Michel. As soon you enter through the gate, you’ll see a narrow street full of restaurants and souvenir shops.

Take some time to stroll the streets, pop inside the shops to window shop, or better yet buy yourself a souvenir if you feel like it.

3. Climb the Ramparts of Mont Saint Michel

Climbing the Walls is one of the fun things to do while on a day trip from Paris to Mont Saint Michel.

Like many Medieval cities around the world, Mont Saint Michel is also surrounded by Ramparts that were used mostly for protection.

You can walk around the walls as you contemplate their history, look down at the Bay, and enjoy stunning views as there are many vantage points.

4. Take a walk on the Bay

Me walking in the bay of Mont Saint Michel

One of the most exciting things to do on a day trip from Paris to Mont Saint Michel is to walk on the bay.

On top of the nice feeling of walking on super soft sand, the experience is fulfilling knowing that at one point the tides will come and cover the very place you can now access. This is an experience you shouldn’t miss.

Just take off your shoes and go for a walk. Don’t worry about cleaning afterward; there are taps where you can clean your feet. (Not the tap at the main entrance but one at another side entrance.)

Be sure to check the tides timetable to avoid being stranded when the tides find you in the middle of the bay and try to always go with a guide.

5. Visit Église Saint-Pierre

Église Saint-Pierre is one of the places to visit in Mont Saint Michel.

Though the Abbey gets all the attention for obvious reasons, another place to see while on a day trip to Mont Saint Michel from Paris is the catholic church of Saint-Pierre.

Regardless of its small size, it holds a lot of importance as it used to be a pilgrimage place.

6. See the Cimetière du Mont Saint-Michel

Gravestones in Mont Saint Michel cemetery

Though quite small in size, it’s worth a stop while exploring the alleys of Mont Saint Michel.

The graveyard is in a quiet spot just behind the Grand Rue. You can also admire the beautiful flowers in the cemetery.

7. See How an Omelet is Made in Normandy

Man making the traditional Normandie omelet in Mont Saint Michel

You may think you know how an omelet is made, but you’ll be surprised! At least when it comes to a “Normandie omelet”.

Located on Grand Rue a few steps after entering the city is La Mère Poulard , a restaurant that has become famous for making omelets in a traditional way.

They’ve been making omelets since 1888 and tourists are welcome to watch the process. Just move closer to their open kitchen and you’ll be fascinated by the process.

And if you feel like it, sit down and have a taste of your own. I’ve gotta warn you though that it’s a bit too pricey, much like anything inside the Mont since it’s very touristy.

8. Take in the views of Mont Saint Michel from Barrage sur le Couesnon

View of Mont Saint Michel from Barrage sur le Couesnon.

While most people walk straight to the Mont or just take the shuttle as soon as they reach the parking area, Barrage sur le Couesnon (the dam on the mainland) is hands down the best place to enjoy the stunning view of Mont Saint Michel.

The good thing is that since most people don’t stop here, it’s not as crowded as you’d imagine.

It’s also a nice spot to sit and watch the sunrise or sunset or just to take in its full beauty at any time of the day.

9. Catch a Sunset with the Mont Saint Michel

With the imposing beauty of Mont Saint Michel, you can imagine how beautiful it becomes at the golden hour.

Depending on your return time from Mont Saint Michel to Paris, this is one thing you shouldn’t miss. This is however possible for people staying overnight instead of day-trippers.

As I mentioned above, the Barrage sur le Couesnon is the best place to enjoy it but the view from the wooden bridge walkway is equally beautiful too.

10. Take in the Beauty of Mont Saint Michel at Night

Mont Saint Michel lit at night

Don’t be in a rush to leave! Wait until dark and you’ll appreciate the beauty of Mont Saint Michel even more at night. In the summer, that may be close to 10:00 p.m. or so, but earlier during the winter.

Though the entire Mont Saint Michel doesn’t light up, (except in the summer) the few lights that are turned on at night create a magical sight when viewed from the wooden pedestrian bridge.

However, if you visit in the summer during the months of July and August, you’ll be mesmerized by the image, sound, and light show at the Abbey.

11. Admire the Beauty of Mont Saint Michel with and without the Tides

View on the bridge with low tides in Mont Saint Michel

One of the fascinating things about Mont Saint Michel is how quickly the place becomes an island surrounded by water and how fast it dries out too.

View of Mont Saint Michel from the bridge with no tides.

Sounds impressive in words but it’s even more magical in reality. One morning you see Mont Saint Michel floating on water and in a few hours, you see the water starting to disappear. It’s such a fulfilling phenomenon worth seeing.

View of the bridge with high tides in Mont Saint Michel

However, to be able to see this, you’ll need to visit on a day that has both very low tides and high tides at the same time. Check the tides timetable and plan your visit accordingly.

I was lucky to see this and all I can say is that it’s just mindblowing! You could plan to stay overnight to maximize your chances of seeing this wonder.

12. Visit the Museums in Mont Saint Michel

Exterior of the Historic Museum in Mont Saint Michel.

Lastly, another thing to do on your Paris to Mont Saint Michel day trip is to visit the museums, or at least one.

Granted they’re not as impressive as the museums in Paris but you can still consider them if you have more time.

There is a total of 4 museums on Mont Saint Michel with each focusing on a different theme.

The Maritime Museum focuses on sea life, the Historical Museum on a walk through the history of the Mont, the historic house of Bertrand Du Guesclin on a former French military man, and the Archeoscope on the mysteries of Mont Saint Michel.

You can either buy this 4 Museums Entry Pass to have access to all 4 museums at a discounted rate or pay for each individually.

Should You Visit the Museums in Mont Saint Michel?

I saw this question a number of times and I thought I should address it here! If you’ve visited big museums, you’ll definitely be underwhelmed by the museums in Mont Saint Michel.

The museums are quite small — you could visit each in under 15 minutes and there is not much to see. Plus, they’re a bit overpriced for what you see.

So, if you’re just on a day trip from Paris to Mont St Michel with a few hours to see everything, I recommend skipping them.

If you’re staying overnight and probably run out of things to see, you can see some. If you choose to visit one, I’d recommend going to the Historical Museum , but if you feel compelled to add a second one, it should probably be the Archeoscope Museum .

Otherwise, you’d not miss much if you choose to skip the museums but I wanted to mention them so that you have various options for things to do in Mont Saint Michel.

13. Walk Through the Narrowest Route in Mont Saint Michel

The narrowest route in Mont Saint Michel.

One of the fun things to do in Mont Saint Michel is to walk through its narrowest street.

It’s just off La Grande Rue and easily traceable as you’ll find a number of people trying to go through it.

Even if you choose not to go through it, it’s still funny looking at people trying to fit themselves in it.

Where to Stay in Mont Saint Michel

Although a number of people just treat it as a day trip, I recommend staying overnight. You get to see the beauty of Mont Saint Michel at sunset and when it lights up at night.

If you choose to spend a night, there are a number of hotels to stay at both inside Mont Saint Michel and outside.

Hotels to opt for inside Mont Saint Michel

If you want to stay inside the Mont Saint Michel, I’ve gotta warn you that the hotels inside don’t have the best reviews as they’re a bit pricey for what they offer.

But, I can also understand the excitement that comes with staying within the walls of Mont Saint Michel. If you feel compelled to stay there, then you can check out the highly-rated ones below

Auberge Saint Pierre : This is probably the best hotel inside Mont Saint Michel. It’s clean and comfortable and has the highest rating among all hotels in Mont Saint Michel.

>>> Click here to check rates and availability <<<

Hôtel la Croix Blanche: This hotel has basic but comfortable rooms. Nothing special to write about back home but it’s a great option if you want to stay in Mont Saint Michel. Some rooms even offer views of the bay. The main downside is the lack of value for money.

Le Relais Du Roy hotel room in Mont Saint Michel

Hotels to Opt for Near the Mont Saint Michel

Hotels outside Mont Saint Michel are a bit more modern and offer more amenities. They also offer more value for money and some even have views of Mont Saint Michel itself.

Le Relais Du Roy : This is where I stayed when I visited Mont Saint Michel from Paris. The staff are helpful, the rooms are clean and comfortable and they offer all the basic amenities for a low budget. The best part is that it’s one of the hotels near the Mont Saint Michel so you can walk there if you choose to and you also get to enjoy a nice view of the Mont from their tiny balcony.

Chambres d’Hôtes Les Vieilles Digues : This bed and breakfast is one of the best options to consider. It is also near Mont Saint and rated the highest in the area. It is set in a Breton-style house with clean and comfortable rooms. It is also priced very well for what they offer.

Practical Tips for Visiting Mont St Michel From Paris

Now that you know how to get there, what to do, and where to stay, here are the practical tips for planning a day trip from Paris to Mont Saint Michel.

Wear Comfortable Walking Shoes

Stairs, stairs, and more stairs! Mont Saint Michel has a lot of stairs so you can expect to be climbing almost all the time. Instead of boots or sandals, stick to your walking shoes.

Take a refillable Travel water bottle

With all the walking required, you can be sure of thirst. Instead of wasting money on buying bottled water and in turn increasing the plastic usage, you can come with your own refillable water bottle. Check out my favorite refillable travel water bottle .

There are some drinking water fountains to refill your bottle every now and then. Unless the tap clearly says that the water is undrinkable, it’s pretty safe to drink from it.

Drinking water tap at the entrance of Mont Saint Michel.

Pack Your Own Food and Snacks

Mont Saint Michel being a touristy spot, restaurants fill up fast and not to mention pricey. If you’re on a day trip to Mont Saint Michel from Paris, you’re better off carrying your own sandwiches.

If you can’t make your own, just grab some cheap ones from a supermarket before your trip. You’ll find a number of people during the lunch hours unpacking their meals, so don’t be afraid to pack your own.

Carry Sunscreen

If you’re visiting in the summer, make sure that you don’t leave sunscreen. It shines a lot and there is not much shelter. You can buy this one if you don’t have one already.

Mont Saint Michel is not wheelchair friendly

Unfortunately, Mont Saint Michel is not wheelchair friendly ror accessible for people with reduced mobility due to the number of stairs. (See photo above!)

Take a warm coat/Sweater/Fleece

Even if you’re visiting in the summer, I advise you to take a warm coat, a sweater, or a fleece if you’re staying overnight because the temperatures change drastically.

Even if it’s burning hot during the day, as soon as it gets dark, it gets incredibly cold. After all, it’s right on the sea.

From Paris to Mont Saint-Michel: 4 Best Ways to Get There

Written by Lisa Alexander Updated May 26, 2022 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

An awe-inspiring sight for tourists and spiritual seekers, the magnificent Gothic monastery of Mont Saint-Michel stands on an island off the Normandy coast . The Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel has been a sacred pilgrimage destination since the 10th century. Today, Mont Saint-Michel still draws visitors who arrive by foot at low tide just as pilgrims did during the medieval era.

There are many options for getting to Mont Saint-Michel and touring the site. You can choose from an organized excursion as a day trip from Paris, you can drive there, or you can take public transportation on your own. Deciding on the best way to get to Mont Saint-Michel depends on your interests and how you prefer to travel.

Visitors arrive at the town of Beauvoir on the mainland (about three kilometers from Mont Saint-Michel), as the island of Mont Saint-Michel is not accessible to cars and other automobiles. Visitors must park their cars at the parking lots in Beauvoir or get dropped off there by taxi.

From the parking lots in Beauvoir, tourists can either take a short shuttle-bus ride or walk along the pedestrian path, then cross the bridge (Pont Passerelle du Mont Saint-Michel) that leads to Mont Saint-Michel. It takes about 45 minutes to walk from the parking lots to Mont Saint-Michel. Strolling across the bridge offers the chance to admire fabulous views of Mont Saint-Michel.

The Passeur (shuttle bus) picks up visitors at the Place des Navettes (near the Tourist Information Center) for a quick shuttle ride to Mont Saint-Michel. This free shuttle service runs frequently on a daily basis (between 7:30am and midnight) and takes less than 15 minutes to arrive at Mont Saint-Michel. The shuttle drop-off point is about 450 meters outside the ramparts that enclose the medieval village and abbey of Mont Saint-Michel.

1. From Paris to Mont Saint-Michel by Guided Tour

Mont Saint-Michel

For most tourists, a guided tour is the best choice when visiting Mont Saint-Michel as a day trip . An organized excursion provides round-trip transportation, which is much easier than driving yourself and quicker than taking the bus or train. Plus, participants appreciate learning from a knowledgable guide about the history of Mont Saint-Michel.

The Mont Saint-Michel Day Trip from Paris is ideal for those who want to maximize their time by taking advantage of an in-depth full-day trip. On this tour, you will embark on the journey from Paris to Mont Saint-Michel early in the morning. After spending plenty of time exploring Mont Saint-Michel, you'll return to Paris around 14 hours later .

Your guide will share interesting insights about the history of pilgrimages to Mont Saint-Michel, as well as explain the perils of arriving here by foot during the Middle Ages. You will visit the Abbey de Saint-Michel, where you can admire the marvelous Gothic architecture. The tour includes brunch and free time to browse the boutiques in the village of Mont Saint-Michel.

2. From Paris to Mont Saint-Michel by Car

Road to Mont Saint-Michel

The drive from Paris to Mont Saint-Michel takes between 3.5 and 4 hours. One route is to take the A13 motorway in the direction of Caen , then merge onto the A84 motorway towards Avranches in the direction of Rennes. This is the most direct and quickest driving route from Paris to Mont Saint-Michel.

Another route is to take the A11 motorway to Le Mans , then connect to the A81 motorway towards Fougères . This way takes slightly longer, but would be a good route to choose if you want to make stops in Chartres (to see its UNESCO-listed cathedral) and/or Le Mans (to wander its captivating historic center) in the Loire Valley or in Fougères (to visit a fairy-tale castle) in the Brittany region.

The real advantage of having a car is that you can extend your vacation itinerary and visit tourist attractions near Mont Saint-Michel in the Brittany and Normandy regions. For instance, Saint-Malo, Dinan, and Fougères in Brittany are all within a one-hour drive from Mont Saint-Michel. About a 1.5-hour drive from Mont Saint-Michel, Caen in Normandy is a good starting point for tours of the D-Day Landing Beaches and Memorials .

It is also helpful to have a car if you want to spend the night in Mont Saint-Michel. This is the ideal way to experience Mont Saint-Michel without the mobs of visitors, so that you can appreciate the serene tranquility and mystical ambience of the island in the morning before day-trippers arrive and in the evening after they leave.

There are only a handful hotels on Mont Saint-Michel (the most famous is the La Mère Poulard ). Keep in mind that you need to carry your luggage up the hill when you arrive at Mont Saint-Michel. Other accommodations are available on the mainland; these hotels feature parking lots, which makes things much easier if you have a car.

Renting a Car in Paris : Travelers can rent a car at Charles de Gaulle Airport or at one of several locations in central Paris. Convenient places to pick up a rental car in Paris include Europcar at the Gare Saint-Lazare in the 8th arrondissement; Europcar, Alamo, or Virtuo at the Gare Montparnasse in the 15th arrondissement; and AAA Luxury & Sport Car Rental in the 16th arrondissement, which also offers chauffeur services.

Parking Information : There are several paid parking lots for visitors near Mont Saint-Michel on the mainland in Beauvoir. You have to park in a specific lot, depending if you are visiting for the day or staying overnight at a hotel. All the parking lots are near the pedestrian path and bridge.

Crossing the Bay of Saint-Michel by Foot : If you wish to cross the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel by foot, you must take a guided walk led by an accredited guide . Taking an official guided walk ensures that you will cross the bay safely (when the tide is low enough).

Tourists should keep in mind that it is dangerous to walk across the bay at certain times, because the mud flats can have quicksand, and tides can rise quickly. An accredited guide knows the tide schedules and will only lead guided walks when it is safe to cross the bay.

3. From Paris to Mont Saint-Michel by Bus

Bus heading to Mont Saint-Michel

There are several companies that provide public transportation by bus to Mont Saint-Michel. This is often the most affordable way to go, although a bus ride takes longer than driving.

The BlaBlaCar Bus is an excellent option for getting from Paris to Mont Saint-Michel on a budget. The bus departs from the Gare Routière Bercy-Seine in Paris and takes five hours and 45 minutes to arrive in Beauvoir. There are two stops (in Courbevoie and Caen) on the way.

The bus drops you off in Beauvoir near the pedestrian paths and bridge to Mont Saint-Michel. You can either walk or take the Passeur shuttle bus from there.

BlaBlaCar offers this bus service Thursday through Sunday, with one bus route a day (leaving Paris at 9:20am and arriving at 3:05pm). Taking the BlaBlaCar Bus only works for travelers who are planning to stay overnight in the Mont Saint-Michel area.

Transportation by bus also makes sense for travelers who are visiting Mont Saint-Michel as part of an itinerary through the Brittany region and/or the neighboring Normandy region. Top tourist destinations nearby (in Brittany) include the fishing village of Cancale, the beach resort of Dinard, and the medieval walled seaside town of Saint-Malo.

4. From Paris to Mont Saint-Michel by Train

Train tracks and Mont Saint-Michel

In terms of affordability and travel time, the train is a great choice of transportation from Paris to Mont Saint-Michel. The train ride is several hours quicker than the bus. However, the train is less convenient because you need to make multiple transfers. Travelers can check train schedules at the official SNCF site .

The most efficient SNCF route is the 2.5-hour TGV train (rapid-velocity train) from Paris Montparnasse station (in the direction of Saint-Malo) to the Dol-de-Bretagne station , which is 30 kilometers from Mont Saint-Michel. This route usually does not require making any connections (unless you take the train that stops in Rennes or Saint-Malo). From Dol-de-Bretagne, you can take a (30- to 45-minute) taxi ride to Mont Saint-Michel.

Another TGV train route option is from Paris Montparnasse station to Rennes in Brittany, which only takes 1.5 hours. In Rennes, you then take the TER Train (in the direction of Saint-Malo) to Dol-de-Bretagne, which takes 45 minutes. Once in Dol-de-Bretagne, follow the above instructions to get to Mont Saint-Michel.

The SNCF offers a direct train route, once daily, from Paris Montparnasse station to Mont Saint-Michel with a connection (10-minute stop) in Villedieu Les Poeles . The train departs from Paris Montparnasse station at 9:19am, and the entire journey takes three hours and 50 minutes, arriving at Mont Saint-Michel at 1:09pm. This option is best for an overnight stay in Mont Saint-Michel because of the limited number of trains returning to Paris.

Normandy Cultural Heritage Spiritual Tourism Cities

Couchée du soleil sur le Mont-Saint-Michel.

Reading time: 0 min Published on 2 February 2024, updated on 15 April 2024

From every angle, Mont-Saint-Michel is a wonder, almost a mirage. Its reflection, in the splendid bay of the same name, doubles the illusion. Behold the abbey, an architectural jewel and its gardens. Come and listen to the religious hymns of monks and nuns. Observe, from above, the exceptional view of the Mont-Saint-Michel Bay.

One of the most visited sites in France

Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, Mont-Saint-Michel is one of the most visited sites in France! Every year, 2.5 million people from all over the world come to discover the sacred Mount. Among them, tourists and pilgrims, in search of discovery or spirituality.

Mont Saint Michel vagues

Mont-Saint-Michel, a sacred place steeped in history

Mont-Saint-Michel owes its existence to Archangel Saint Michel (hence its name), bishop of Avranches. At the request of the Saint, the bishop had a sanctuary built in 709 on Mount Tomb.

In 966, at the request of the Duke of Normandy this time, a Benedictine community took over the rock, on which a Benedictine abbey was built.

day tours from paris to mont st michel

A most fabulous medieval construction site

Gradually, over the centuries, the complex continued to be built: the Romanesque abbey church and monastery buildings were built during the 11th and 12th centuries. And finally, the buildings of the Wonder (including the cloister and the refectory) were built during the 13th and 16th century.

Not to mention the protective military constructions in the 14th century (which helped to preserve the mount and its village from the Hundred Years War).

All of those constructions were a miracle : brought back from the Chausey Islands , the granite blocks were carved and then hoisted to the top of the mountain.

Ultimate religious site

Throughout the centuries, Mont-Saint-Michel has always been a renowned religious site . It was, along with Rome and Santiago de Compostela, one of the most important pilgrimages of the Medieval West.

Its primary vocation are prayers and welcomings since 2001 with the presence of the Brothers and Sisters of the Monastic Fraternities of Jerusalem. It is therefore quite natural that Mont-Saint-Michel is now one of the 13 Sanctuary Cities of France.

The must-see attractions of Mont-Saint-Michel

Visit the museums:

  • Historical or the museum of the sea and ecology.
  • Discover the Tiphaine dwelling, the historic home of the knight Bertrand du Guesclin (constable of the armies of the King of France);
  • Admire the parish church, the pilgrim's house and its religious library.
  • Cross the Mont-Saint-Michel Bay with a guide.

Beware Adventurers! Venturing alone is prohibited and very dangerous. The quicksand and rising waters have been no good for many pilgrims in the past... It is not for nothing that the mountain was called the "Mont-Saint-Michel at the risk of the sea’’.

Visiting the Mont-Saint-Michel: what is there to see?

This is a must-see French landmark and it’s worth allowing enough time to visit its accompanying museums, hotels, restaurants and boutiques. In addition to the abbey itself, don’t miss:

The Musée de la Mer et de l’Écologie , housing a collection of 250 ancient boat models where you can learn about the Mont Saint-Michel Maritime Character Restoration project
