‘You can’t just replace people with a computer’: The sad demise of the tourist information centre

J ess brings Aberdeen alive. “Hi, how can I help you?” she beams in welcome, as she produces the kind of oversized map of the city too big to print at home.

She listens patiently to where I’ve already been on a dozen previous visits and marks half a dozen more places on the map I’ve not. Sadly, it seems there’s no longer room in 21st-century Britain for people like Jess. Visit Scotland recently announced plans to axe its last 25 tourist information ‘iCentres’ within two years.

The tourist board has form, scything down 39 centres in 2017. It’s a no-brainer, according to outgoing chair Lord Thurso. “It would be remiss of me not to prepare the organisation for the future,” he says. “We must look at where we can invest our resources and expertise to make the greatest economic impact.

“After conducting an extensive review, we can do this by focusing on providing information to visitors before they leave home. The world around us has changed and we have no choice but to change with it.”

Lord Thurso assures that there will be no “overnight change” and all the iCentres will remain open until at least September. He also says there will be no compulsory redundancies, but that is not the whole picture that unfurls when I walk into another iCentre and ask the staff – who prefer not to be named – how they feel.

“Only the full-time staff will be retained. All of us seasonal workers will go,” says one. “It’s devastating for us and for the visitors who use the iCentre, especially more mature ones who are less tech-savvy. We help people with maps, accommodation and tips.

“But so much more, as people love that personal contact. Scotland is renowned as a welcoming country and we are the face of that. It’s something you just cannot get online.”

As if on cue a Dutch visitor and her daughter chime in to agree how useful they’ve found this iCentre, stressing that “you just cannot replace people with a computer”.

You may not be able to fully replace people with computers , but that likely won’t deter other tourist offices trying as part of a wider trend for online over in-person.

Yet Scotland also offers lessons for positive solutions to the absence of expensive government-backed in-person services in the form of community-led tourism.

SCOTO (Scottish Community Tourism) and its network are at the vanguard of this growing trend. Executive director Carron Tobin highlights several community-run information centres: “These are run by passionate local people keen to provide a warm welcome to their community and face-to-face responses to questions – you’d be surprised what people ask! Yes, people are making decisions and booking online before they travel, but once they arrive, that local welcome and ‘here and now’ advice is what matters.”

Case in point Bùth Bharraigh Ltd (a community social enterprise providing goods and services for visitors and local people) on the island of Barra stepped up to the plate when the Visit Scotland tourist information centre closed in 2017. Manager Sarah MacLean explains: “For nearly a decade we have been providing tourist information and accommodation finding services for Barra and Vatersay.

“We also have laundry, bike hire, free Wi-Fi with tea and coffee and printing services. Our service is vital to provide people with information and also to help them make the most of their time in Barra.”

It excels beyond what an official centre ever could. “When the ferry is late it’s an issue for people,” adds MacLean. “They might be a single traveller coming to an island for the first time and feel a little daunted. We will stay open to welcome them with a smile and help them.”

In recent years, I’ve spoken to dozens of SCOTO members. The phrase I keep hearing is “temporary locals”, the idea that community tourism brings visitors closer to the community in a symbiotic relationship. Another shining SCOTO member is the Loch Ness Hub . When this Visit Scotland tourist information centre closed, few dreamt of redemption. The local community, though, had other ideas. After coalescing around a passionate village hall meeting, the centre re-opened in summer 2021.

“When people walk in, we want to give them a proper local welcome and savvy local advice,” says the Hub’s Russell Fraser. “We want to be their first point of contact and for them to go away having had a good experience. People remember when you go above and beyond.”

Perhaps encouraged by the success of these community-driven projects, other tourism agencies are reacting. Visit Aberdeenshire’s CEO Chris Foy has already overseen a community volunteer guide programme to greet arrivals in Aberdeen’s new cruise ship harbour. “We’re looking at having a small pop-up space there, being more nimble and reacting to demand without the need of a large landmark information centre,” he says.

Private businesses are watching events closely too. “There will be a real gap with the closure of Visit Scotland,” says Iain Fenwick of the Perthshire Local listings app. “We connect visitors and businesses in a direct way and that works very well on the ground. When people realise we have the local knowledge and that their spend is going straight back into Perth they love using our app and don’t miss the traditional centres.”

The Visit Scotland closures then, while disappointing, offer an opportunity, enthuses SCOTO’s Tobin, “to recalibrate tourism in local areas and explore community responses to providing much-needed local information and inspiration, as well as showcasing local authentic experiences.

“The next two years will be ample time to scope out the possibilities and mirror what has been successful in other places.”

The UK tourist information centres under threat

Scotland is certainly not alone in the closure of tourist information centres, with a swathe shutting down across the UK or at risk.

Norwich

Information centres run by individual cities in England are under threat too. In 2021 the decision was made to close Norwich’s once-popular city centre resource due to budget issues, with the move to acknowledge what Norwich council called a “growing digital world”, saving over £100,000 a year.

Morecambe and Lancaster

The closure of the Morecambe Visitor Information Centre and the Lancaster Visitor Information Centre, which each cost around £250,000 a year to run, was announced last year. The council has been quoted as saying the closures come as part of a

“long-term review of how the council provides tourist information, both online and in-person”, with talk of funds being used both for high-tech information systems and increased marketing.

Peak District

As reported by Telegraph Travel in spring last year, a quartet of visitor centres in Bakewell, Castleton, Edale and the Upper Derwent Valley were under threat of closure at a time when the UK’s national parks have never been busier . These centres in the Peak District collectively attract 400,000 people per year, and provide a personalised information service.

In June 2023 the park authority announced a surprise and welcome reprieve after a charity stepped in to provide three years of funding while alternative plans are formulated to avoid permanent closure.

Winchcombe

This tourist information centre housed in the Winchcombe Museum building was funded by Winchcombe Town Council, who took the decision to close it last month, due to “changes to the way customers are now accessing tourist information”. Instead they are looking to “direct the money towards other ways of promoting Winchcombe as a tourist destination.”

Chesterfield

Chesterfield Borough Council have defied over 4,000 campaigners signing a petition to make the decision to close the centre this year, explaining that “the service is to be digitalised”. Campaigners had argued not everyone can access the new digital-only systems and might find them confusing even if they could compared to in-person contact.

Totnes

The council decision to close the information centre in Totnes was based both on community consultation and only receiving 2,279 in-person enquiries in 2023, while www.visittotnes.co.uk received over 330,000 visits. The council estimates that the closure will save around £95,000 a year.

Medway

This information centre run by Visit Medway offered visitors the chance to “pop in for local information, to visit the art gallery and to grab a souvenir”. It brought life and information to Rochester High Street. It closes for good on April 19, 2024. Local resident Daniel Parsons says: “It’s a real shame as when I had any friends visiting we would always pop in here for a friendly introduction to the area.”

Coffi Vista, Caerphilly town’s popular tourist information centre, opened in 1995, had morphed with the times, adding a coffee lounge and changing its name. That has not prevented a decision to close this popular hub this spring, a decision made by Caerphilly County Borough Council as it battles a major hole in its finances. Staff members have been quoted as complaining the closure is a “backwards step” at a time when the Welsh Government is trying to grow tourism .

Centre for Alternative Technology, Corris

The Centre for Alternative Technology, an innovative information centre, has been based in Corris, near Machynlleth in Wales, since the 1970s. It is a “showcase for solutions to tackle climate change” and an information centre too. Over the decades it has attracted thousands of tourists and brought in educational visits. Run by a charity, it closed to day visitors in 2023.

Northern Ireland

While no plans to close official tourist information centres en masse like Scotland have been announced, local travel journalist and radio host David Gordon says: “There is no doubt that the local authorities in Northern Ireland will be watching what happens in Scotland very carefully.”

The official ‘Visitor Information Plan for NI’ sounds ominous. It “seeks to maximise the potential opportunities of the changing scope of visitor information and the opportunities provided by the existing Visitor Information Centre network.”

Taipei Taoyuan Airport Guide: Taipei Airport to City

All your options to get from Taipei airport to city center in this Taipei Airport Guide. The best option is the Taipei Airport express but after hours you’ll need a Taipei airport taxi. In this Taipei travel guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about arriving at Taipei Taoyuan airport (TPE Airport).

If you’re looking on more information regarding trains, buses and the subway in Taiwan, check out my How To Get Around Taiwan post.

Arriving At Taoyuan International Airport (TPE Taipei Airport)

There are two terminals at TPE airport: Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. You can travel between both Taipei airport terminals for free via the Skytrain.

taipei airport sign

Taipei Airport Code

There are two international airports in Taipei:

  • TPE : This Taipei airport code is for Taoyuan Taipei International Airport
  • TSA : This Taipei airport code is for Taipei Songshan Airport

TPE Airport is located in Taoyuan . To get from TPE Taipei Airport To City Center, it takes approximately 35 minutes.

TSA Airport is located within Taipei in the Songshan district. If you’re traveling to Taipei, arriving/departing from Taipei Songshan airport is much more convenient than going to Taoyuan airport.

Since Taipei Songshan Airport serves mostly domestic flights, going through immigration for the few international flights it does serve is a breeze! Typical wait times at Taipei Taoyuan airport immigration can be around 1-hour.

Taipei Travel Guide: Exchanging Money At TPE Airport

If you want to exchange money in Taiwan, you can exchange money at Taipei International Airport or at local Taiwanese banks.

Local Taiwanese banks do charge a fee for exchanging money that works out to be around 8-12% depending on how much you exchange.

I prefer just using the ATM and taking on the bank fees because percentage wise, it tends to work out in your favor.

Refunding ATM Bank Fees

You can get your bank fees refunded ! At the end of your Taiwan trip you’ll accumulate a lot of international bank fees. When your statement arrives, just call up your bank and ask them as a one-time courtesy to remove those bank fee charges because you “didn’t know” there was a fee.

Taipei Travel Guide:Getting SIM cards or Pocket WiFi

It’s incredibly helpful to have mobile data starting at the Taipei Taiwan airport. Since you can look up directions, order an Uber and translate things in real time. Personally, I don’t use SIM cards or pocket WiFi when I travel because Google Fi is much easier.

Google Fi is one of the cheapest phone services in the United States and it’s the highest quality since they have contracts to share existing cell phone towers.

But if you don’t have Google Fi, you can pick up a SIM card or a pocket WiFi router at Taoyuan International Airport or Songshan Airport for mobile data in Taipei.

Compared to what they try to sell 4G SIM cards and pocket WiFi routers at Taipei Songshan Airport, Klook sells them at 30-60% less.

Compared to what they try to sell 4G SIM cards and WiFi routers at Taipei Songshan Airport, Klook sells them at 30-60% less .

Taipei Airport Transportation To City: Transport from Taoyuan Airport To Taipei

Transportation from Taoyuan airport to Taipei city can be achieved via bus, taxi, Uber, private car but the best option is the Taipei Airport MRT Express train.

How do I get from Taipei airport to city?

The most convenient transportation from Taipei airport to city is the Taipei Airport MRT. That operates from 06:00 – 00:00. If you happen to be arriving in Taipei Taoyuan Airport outside of the Taipei Airport MRT operating hours, you other options are taxi, Uber and private car.

Taipei International Airport Bus

The next best option after the Taipei Airport MRT. The Taipei airport bus is very affordable and runs even during the odd hours of the night. You can find the ticketing counters on B1 of Taipei airport. This is the cheapest option from Taipei airport to city after midnight.

You can find Taipei Airport bus tickets cheaper on Klook .

Taipei Taoyuan Airport Taxi

Taipei taxi fare from airport to city.

Taking a taxi from Taoyuan airport to Taipei will cost you a flat rate of NT$1000. The rate for Taipei airport to city after midnight is the same.

Taipei Taxi Fare From Taipei To Taoyuan Airport

Taking a taxi from anywhere in central Taipei to TPE Airport will cost you a flat rate of NT$1000. Taxis need to be reserved in advance so if you’re staying at a hotel, they can call and make the arrangements for you.

Where To Stay in Taipei: Where Where To Go and Where To Eat

Tipping the taipei airport taxi.

When taking the Taipei airport taxi or any Taipei taxi, tipping is not expected. Tipping is not part of the Taipei taxi fare customs and etiquette.

Uber Taipei

Is uber or taxi cheaper in taipei.

Uber is available in Taipei and you can also use Uber to order local metered taxis. For Uber rides in Taipei city during non-peak hours, the rides tend to be about 20% cheaper than a metered taxi. This is just from my experience taxis and monitoring the Taipei taxi fare compared to Uber.

How Much is Uber from Taoyuan Airport To Taipei City?

Taking an Uber from Taipei airport will cost you about the same as the Taipei airport taxi at NT$1000. This is another comfortable option from Taipei airport to city after midnight.

So if you don’t want to use the buses or amazing MRT Taipei system, you can call an Uber. WiFi is available in most of the city but if you want a SIM card or pocket WiFi, please refer to the “Getting SIM cards or Pocket WiFi” section above.

Tipping Uber In Taipei?

Nope. In America, you’ll see an option to tip on your Uber app. With the exact same Uber app in Taipei, there will be no option to tip your Uber driver.

Is it safe to take Uber in Taiwan?

Yes! It is safe to take Uber in Taiwan. The Taiwanese government has strict regulations for ride-sharing to ensure the safety of the people. Every Uber in Taiwan is insured.

Cars are expensive in Taiwan so many drivers will rent a car to driver for Uber in Taiwan. If the driver is using a rental car, when your Uber in Taiwan ride is completed you will receive an e-mail with all the car and driver information.

“The Taiwan government requires Uber to provide you with a car rental notification when you request a ride via the Uber app. This is not a receipt.”

Are there Uber in Taiwan?

Uber is available in Taipei, Kaoshiung, Taichung and several other parts of Taiwan.

Private Car

You can schedule a private car from Klook and it will be cheaper than taking a taxi. If you want to get a little fancy, you can take a luxury sedan for a little bit more money. It’s a great option to get from Taipei airport to city after midnight.

Moscow International Business Center (Moscow City)

  • Guide to Russia

What can you do at Moscow City?

  • Dine in style: Moscow City is home to 100+ cafes and restaurants, including Europe’s highest restaurant and ice-cream shop
  • See Moscow like never before: Ascend to one of Moscow City’s observation decks for an unparalleled panorama of Moscow
  • Admire world-class architecture: Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers has distinctive architecture and design
  • Learn something new: Visit the Museum of High-Rise Architecture in Moscow or the Metro Museum

Moscow City is a multifunctional complex in the west of Moscow, which has come to represent the booming business of Russia’s capital. Its skyscrapers enrich Moscow’s skyline, contrasting the medieval cupolas and Stalinist high-rises. Visitors to Moscow City can enjoy entertainment high in the sky, as the complex is home not just to offices, but to restaurants, cinemas, viewing platforms, and museums.

History of Moscow City

Moscow City was first conceived in 1991 by honoured Soviet architect Boris Tkhor, who proposed to construct a business center in Moscow. It would be complete with gleaming skyscrapers rivalling those of New York and London, to reflect the new life and growing ambitions of post-Soviet Russia.

The chosen site was a stone quarry and disused industrial zone in western Moscow, in between the Third Ring Road and Moskva River. Initially, the territory was divided into 20 sections arranged in a horseshoe shape around a central zone. The skyscrapers would increase in height as they spiralled around the central section, with shorter structures built on the waterfront to give the taller buildings behind a view of the river.

Architect Gennady Sirota, who contributed to iconic projects such as the Olympic Sports Complex on Prospekt Mira, was selected as the chief architect, and many other world-famous architects were attracted to Moscow to realise their visions in Moscow City.

What can you see and do at Moscow City?

Where Moscow’s cityscape was once dominated by Stalin’s Seven Sisters skyscrapers , this is no more. Moscow City is home to eight of Russia’s ten tallest buildings, six of which exceed 300 metres in height. More buildings are still under construction there today, including the One Tower (which will be Europe’s second-tallest building). Once completed, Moscow City will comprise more than 20 innovative structures.

Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers was designed by its own architect, lending the cluster of skyscrapers a unique appearance. Aside from being a site of architectural wonder, Moscow City is a place for leisure and entertainment with over 100 cafes and restaurants, exhibition spaces, cinemas, viewing platforms, and more.

Federation Tower

  • East Tower: 374m, 97 floors; West Tower: 243m, 63 floors
  • Completed in 2017
  • Architects: Sergey Tchoban and Peter Schweger

The East Federation Tower is the tallest building in Moscow, and the second-tallest building in Europe after the Lakhta Centre in St Petersburg. Visitors can enjoy a luxurious meal of seafood, truffles or steak at restaurant ‘Sixty’ on the 62nd floor of the West Tower, or visit Europe’s highest observation deck, ‘Panorama 360’, on the 89th floor of the East Tower.

Did you know? The ice cream and chocolate shop on the 360 observation deck are the highest in the world!

  • South Tower: 354m, 85 floors; North Tower: 254m, 49 floors
  • Completed in 2015
  • Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP

The South OKO Tower is the third-tallest building in Russia and Europe. Here, you can visit ‘Ruski’ to dine on hearty Russian cuisine cooked on a real Russian stove, and have a drink in the ice bar. Alternatively, visit restaurant, nightclub and performance space ‘Birds’; the restaurant is the highest in Europe, situated on the 86th floor roof terrace alongside an observation deck. The OKO Towers are also home to karaoke club ‘City Voice’.

Did you know? Underneath OKO Towers is the largest underground parking in Europe, with 16 levels and 3,400 parking spaces.

Mercury Tower

  • 339m tall, 75 floors
  • Architects : Mikhail Posokhin, Frank Williams, Gennady Sirota

Another multifunctional skyscraper, which was designed as the first truly ‘green’ building in Moscow. The Mercury Tower has a distinct geometric shape and copper-coloured glazing, and was the tallest building in Europe upon completion. Visit ‘More i myaso’ (Sea and meat) on the first floor of the tower to enjoy European and Mediterranean cuisine whilst surrounded by greenery. On the 2nd and 40th floors a modern art gallery, the ‘ILONA-K artspace’, has just opened.

City of Capitals

  • Moscow Tower: 302m, 76 floors; St Petersburg Tower: 257m, 65 floors
  • Completed in 2009
  • Architect: Bureau NBBJ

The unique geometric design of the City of Capitals towers resembles stacks of rotating blocks, and is rooted in Constructivism of the early Soviet period (many Soviet Constructivist buildings can be found in Moscow). Visitors to the Moscow Tower can enjoy a range of cuisines – traditional Italian dishes on the summer terrace of ‘Tutto Bene’, Panasian cuisine in the tropical luxury of the ‘Bamboo Bar’ on the 1st floor’, and poke or smoothie bowls at ‘Soul in the Bowl’ cafe on the 80th floor.

Tower on the Embankment

  • Tower A: 84m; Tower B:127m; Tower C: 268m, 61 floors
  • Completed in 2007
  • Architects: Vehbi Inan and Olcay Erturk

After completion, the Tower on the Embankment was the tallest building in Europe, and is now the 13th tallest. It houses the headquarters of several large Russian and international  companies, including IBM and KPMG. There are two cafes located on the 1st floor of Tower C – self-service café ‘Obed Bufet’ (Lunch Buffet) and Bakery Chain ‘Khleb Nasushchny’ (Daily Bread).

Evolution Tower

  • 255m tall, 54 floors
  • Architects: Philip Nikandrov and RMJM Scotland Ltd

Evolution is Moscow City’s most recognisable tower, and the 11th tallest building in Russia. Its façade is a true architectural marvel, comprising continuous strips of curved glazing spiralling high into  the sky. According to the architect, Philip Nikandrov, the spiral shape of the tower honours centuries of architectural design in Russia, from the onion domes of St Basil's Cathedral to Vladimir Shukhov’s Tatlin Tower, a masterpiece of Constructivist design. Outside the Evolution tower is a landscaped terrace and pedestrian zone descending to the Presnenskaya Embankment, which was also designed by Nikandrov.

Did you know? Moscow’s largest wedding palace was supposed to be built on the site of the Evolution tower, though the project was abandoned.

  • 239m tall, 60 floors
  • Completed in 2011

Imperia’s interesting design has a curved roof and an arched glass façade. Inside the tower are various cafes including ‘City Friends’ for all-day breakfasts and light lunches, ‘Mama in the City’ for simple meals of Russian cuisine, and ‘abc kitchen’ for European and Indian-inspired dishes. Alternatively, visit ‘High Bar’ on the 56th floor for cocktails with a view. In Imperia you’ll also find the Museum of High-Rise Construction in Moscow (suitably located on the 56th floor), and the Camera Immersive Theatre.

Did you know? Inside Vystavochnaya metro station is the Metro Museum , dedicated to the history of the beautiful Moscow Metro!

  • 130m tall, 26 floors
  • Completed in 2001
  • Architect: Boris Tkhor

Tower 2000 was Moscow City’s first tower. It stands on the opposite bank of the Moskva River, and houses a viewing platform from which visitors can admire an unparalleled panorama of Moscow City. The Bagration Bridge reaches across the river from the tower to Moscow City, and underneath are piers from where you can take boat trips.

Afimall is Moscow’s largest entertainment and shopping complex, home to 450 shops, cafes and restaurants, a cinema, and a virtual-reality game park. The shopping centre is located in the central section of Moscow City, and a cinema and concert hall are currently under construction there.

What’s nearby?

Sechenov Botanical Gardens: The botanical gardens of the First Moscow State Medical University was created for students’ training and research in 1946. Today it is open for free visits, and is home to a large arboretum.

Park Krasnaya Presnya: This park belonged to the Studenets estate of the Gagarin princes. It is a monument of 18th and 19th century landscaping, with Dutch ponds, ornate bridges, and tree-lined alleys. There are also sports facilities, sports equipment rental, and cafes.

District Centre by Digvijay Singh, Dhruv Kukreja, Himanshu Lalit, Kapil Grover & Mohit Singh

district centre travel

The journey began with some glimpses images of spaces followed by our imagination which led us to the final design. Guiding contrasting typologies under a single roof & upholding the value of each typology itself is challenging. The site is located in Noida, Delhi.

Architects: Pixelated Paper Team: Digvijay Singh, Dhruv Kukreja, Himanshu Lalit, Kapil Grover, Mohit Singh Location: Noida, India Area: 6000.0 sqm Status: Concept Project Year: 2017

district centre travel

The proposed centre consists of various programs which are organized on different levels and masses bringing visitors around the centre piece of the plaza; the build model itself is positioned within the scooped space of the build mass. From the initial stages of our design journey it was clear building shall not be known for how tall it would be.

district centre travel

The building defines the formal vocabulary of spaces with the dynamism of rotation and prominence of the blocks creating rhythmic visual balance. To make the building functionally viable we’ve focused on the connectivity, providing each group a field of their own significance. The contact was made with the visual tools like the play of rotation and the hierarchy of building blocks defined with respect to its function and maintain a good relationship between users and the spaces.

district centre travel

Considering Light and greenery an influential element in a design we scooped out a massive chunk of concrete to have a sense of openness and greeting ample light into building and turned the scooped area into an open green space. This further helped in visual separation of the masses internally and also created a large space for interaction.

district centre travel

This valley between huge concrete blocks creates a contrasting images to District centre from inside outside. Separate access are provided for major functions like Hotel, Hospital and shopping area. Levels are branched to get a full advantage of rotation in blocks which enhance the façade surfaces and allowing more number of voids.

A brand new shopping development with M&S and Aldi stores is set to open later this year. The £19m complex at the former Seaton Barracks in Plymouth is expected to be ready by September.

Confirmed tenants at the Derriford District Centre include a Marks and Spencer Foodhall, an Aldi supermarket, a Costa Coffee, a PureGym, a Pets Corner pet shop and an Oggy Oggy pasty shop. There are also plans to lease another unit to a hot-food takeaway operator.

The Plymouth City Council-owned site will create about 100 jobs and provide new facilities for the growing population in the north of Plymouth. Developers ADC Kimberley Ltd are working with Devon Contractors Ltd on the project, which is near the Future Inns hotel and The Range's global headquarters and superstore.

Cllr Tudor Evans, leader of Plymouth City Council, said: "The developers are really cracking on with the job and it's brilliant to see a site that was once empty so full of workers, especially young people learning new skills. This is a hugely important regeneration project for the city and is the last major area of land on the Plymouth International Science and Medical Park to be developed."

"Regeneration plans can take a long time to come to fruition, but this centre is well on its way to being open. I'm thrilled that the council has played a part in helping to create something of this scale to serve the north of the city."

In May 2023 Cllr Evans signed a decision to spend £1m of borrowed cash to unblock the project as it was hit by rising construction costs. The council was already funding the development to the tune of £18.9m after costs leaped from the £17.86m allocated in 2021.

The project is now providing work for 20 sub-contacting businesses employing a total of more than 150 tradespeople through the build. The majority are based locally, boosting the Plymouth economy and helping many improve their skills with significant on-the-job training.

The development includes 12 electric vehicle charging points, sustainable transport links to reduce car use, cycle lanes and easy pedestrian access to bus stops. It's near a major new housing development and some of Plymouth's biggest employers, including Derriford Hospital and the Land Registry.

Jonathan Banham, from ADC Kimberley, said: "It is fantastic to see this project delivering, not just for the people of Plymouth who will get a range of vital new facilities in this part of the city, but also for young people who want to follow a career in construction."

There are usually five or six apprentices on site at any one time, three employed by roofing and cladding contractor Progressive and the others working for bricklaying subcontractor Plym Bricklaying.

Darren Harper-Thomas, one of the apprentice bricklayers on the site, said he had been working on a number of sites and was now pleased to be part of the team at the Plymouth District Centre.

"We've been doing some six-inch blockwork on the Aldi supermarket," the 17-year-old said. "I've always wanted a job in construction it's proper grafting and you learn a skill. I'm hoping that when I finish my apprenticeship I can get a full-time job with Plym Bricklaying I love it!"

Emma Hewitt, who leads on skills at Plymouth City Council and represents Building Plymouth, said: "Investment in developments such as the Derriford District Centre create massive opportunities for construction skills, training, job creation including apprenticeships.

"Working closely with the onsite team at Derriford, we are creating exciting chances for young people to understand careers in construction through opening the site for local school visits, offering work experience placements, delivering careers activities, and also supporting new apprentices to take their first steps into the industry.

"In addition, we are supporting job seekers and career changers including our military service leavers to take advantage of the employment opportunities that such a major construction project generates."

Middle East latest: Iranian commandos hijack Israel-linked cargo ship by helicopter - Israel vows 'consequences'

Iranian forces have seized an Israel-linked cargo ship with 25 crew members on board, steering it towards Iran. Israel has vowed there will be "consequences" for the hijacking, and demanded the EU sanction Iran and deem its Revolutionary Guards terrorists.

Israel's defence minister has urged people not to take "revenge" over the death of an Israeli teenager in the West Bank.

Yoav Gallant said he was "saddened" by the death of Binyamin Achimair, who he said was "murdered in cold blood".

"I appeal to the public, let the security forces act quickly in the hunt for the terrorists - revenge actions will make it difficult for our fighters in their mission - the law must not be taken into one's hands," Mr Gallant said on X.

The 14-year-old boy went missing on Friday, and his body was found earlier today by Israeli security forces and police.

The Israeli army has said he was killed in a "terrorist attack".

His disappearance sparked a large attack by Israeli settlers on a Palestinian village.

Palestinian health officials said one man was killed and 25 others were wounded in the attack on Mughayyir.

Canada has warned its citizens to avoid all travelling to Israel, Gaza and the West Bank.

The country has upgraded its risk assessment of the region due to the increased threat of attacks on Israeli territory.

Foreign Minister Melanie Joly posted a statement on X, saying Canadians already in the area should consider leaving by commercial means.

"With a heightened risk of attacks on Israeli territory, the regional security situation remains highly volatile and could escalate without notice," she warned.

The federal government had previously advised Canadians to avoid non-essential travel to the region.

A British-Palestinian surgeon who volunteered in Gaza hospitals during the first weeks of the war said he was denied entry into Germany for the duration of a pro-Palestinian conference this weekend.

Dr Ghassan Abu Sitta was due to take part in the conference, but when he arrived at Berlin airport yesterday, he was held for several hours and then told he had to return to the UK, he said.

Police at the airport refused entry due to "the safety of the people at the conference and public order," Mr Abu Sitta told the AP.

The gathering, entitled the Palestine Congress, was to discuss a range of topics including German arms shipments to Israel and solidarity with what organisers called the Palestinian struggle.

Police at Berlin airport could not immediately be reached for comment.

Mr Abu Sitta has worked during multiple conflicts in the Palestinian territories, beginning in the late 1980s during the first Palestinian uprising.

He has also worked in other conflict zones, including in Iraq, Syria and Yemen.

He spent 44 days in Gaza hospitals as a volunteer for Doctors Without Borders.

Protestors have been demonstrating outside the US embassy office in Tel Aviv.

People held placards and stopped traffic during as they called for a deal to release Israeli hostages held in Gaza.

Levels of protest against Benjamin Netanyahu's approach to the war have been steadily increasing in Israel.

Footage shows a barrage of rockets fired toward northern Israel last night.

The IDF said Hezbollah launched approximately 40 rockets into the north of the country.

While some of the rockets were intercepted, others fell in open areas and sirens were sounded to warn of falling shrapnel.

There were no injuries reported during the attack, the IDF said.

Hezbollah - an Iran-backed militant group based in Lebanon - has regularly exchanged fire with Israel since the 7 October attacks.

Israel's "blatant" provocation of Iran means a response was expected, says Yoss Mekelberg, associate fellow at Chatham House's Middle East and North Africa programme.

But the seizure of a commercial ship in the Strait of Hormuz was "not exactly the response we expected, it is a relatively minor one," he said.

Iran either felt that it had to do something but did not wish to escalate the situation, or this is the "first among other acts".

Mr Mekelberg said it was difficult to know what Benjamin Netanyahu's priorities were, having lost much of the support of the international community in Gaza and now "provoking [Iran] to react".

Iran blames an attack on its consulate in Syria that killed senior commanders on Israel - Israel has not said it was responsible.

"It was so blatant there is an expectation... for a response, the question is what kind of response," said Mr Mekelberg.

A total of 33,686 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's military offensive so far, the Hamas-led health ministry has said.

A further 76,309 people have been wounded, it added.

There have been 52 Palestinians killed and 95 injured in the last 24 hours, it said in a statement.

The ministry does not differentiate between civilian and militant deaths.

While some Israeli officials have sought to cast doubt on fatality figures given out by the Palestinian Health Authority in Gaza, a number of independent groups say they have proved to be largely reliable and broadly in line with those later produced by the UN and Israel itself.

Examination of data from previous Gaza conflicts - the health ministry's counts compared with the post-war United Nations analysis - shows that the initial data is largely accurate with, at most, a 10-12% discrepancy.

The Netherlands will close its embassy in Tehran tomorrow as a precaution, the Dutch foreign ministry has said.

It cited rising tensions between Iran and Israel.

The ministry added that it would decide on Sunday whether the embassy would reopen on Monday.

By  Alex Rossi , international correspondent

This was no act of maritime piracy and it was not meant to be. It was a warning from a major state which would have been sanctioned at the highest levels in Tehran.

In daylight, commandos from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps board and takeover a ship in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Huge amounts of oil and gas pass through the waterway everyday - if it was closed, it would have huge ramifications for global trade. In short, it would cause chaos.

Why have the Iranians done this? Well, timing is everything.

The ship, the MSC Aries, is Portuguese-flagged but it is linked to Zodiac Maritime, which is part of Israeli billionaire's Eyal Ofer's portfolio.

Tensions between Israel and Iran are extraordinarily high - US intelligence claims an Iranian missile attack on Israel as retaliation for the Damascus consulate strike is imminent.

The taking of the ship is unlikely to draw a military response from the IDF but it sends signals.

It is a provocation to Jerusalem but it's also a message to Israel's allies that Iran can cause mayhem by closing the Strait of Hormuz.

In that sense it is a projection of Iranian power and a warning that standing with Israel can bring consequences.

Earlier this morning, an Israeli human rights group said dozens of settlers stormed a Palestinian village in the occupied West Bank, shooting and setting fire to cars and houses.

Settlers entered the village of al-Mughayyir in search of a missing 14-year-old Israeli boy, according to rights group Yesh Din, before killing a man and wounding 25 others.

The Israeli army has now said the body of the Israeli boy has been found.

Binyamin Achimair was killed in a "terrorist attack", the IDF said.

"Security forces are continuing the pursuit after those suspected of carrying out the attack," the army said.

Man charged over €32m Ballyseedy Garden Centre crystal meth haul refused bail due to flight risk

Father offered to sell home and put up €200,000 as a surety for james leen (41), who court heard is working on a travel app.

A man charged over the country’s largest-ever crystal meth seizure, valued at more than €32 million, has been denied bail by the High Court despite his father’s offer to sell the family home and put up €200,000 as a surety.

James Leen (41), of Pilgrim Hill, Kilmourna, Listowel, Co Kerry, faces two charges of drug importation at Cork Port, Ringaskiddy, on October 16th last. The father of three is also accused of possessing methylamphetamine, known as crystal meth, worth €13,000 or more at Ballyseedy Garden Centre between October 27th last and mid-February.

He and his co-accused, businessman Nathan McDonnell, chief executive of Ballyseedy, were denied District Court bail in February and Mr McDonnell was also refused High Court bail.

High Court judge Ms Justice Mary Ellen Ring on Friday refused Mr Leen bail after deeming him a flight risk.

The hearing was told that Mr Leen was setting up a travel app and the judge described it as a “conundrum” that a man on legal aid could travel so much when given a list of countries he had visited in recent years.

Det Sgt Ernie Henderson also objected to bail. He said that on February 15th, based on information gathered by the Kerry Divisional Drugs Unit, Customs officers at Cork Port examined a container.

He said the magnetic separator machine inside was not operative and featured “sophisticated concealment” which was purposely built to hide drugs. It contained 543kg of crystal meth. The court heard gardaí had established that the shipment arrived at Cork Port from Mexico on October 16th.

Det Sgt Henderson said it was believed that Mr Leen was the logistics figure in the importation and allegedly liaised with different figures internationally. It was claimed a company and its since deceased chief executive, code-named ‘Grandma’, had paid €40,000 for the machine.

The bail hearing was told that Mr McDonnell paid the €20,000 shipping charges. The machine remained at Ballyseedy Garden Centre for months before being moved to Cork Port for transportation to Australia.

Det Sgt Henderson said the value of the drugs in Ireland was €32.8 million but it would have been “substantially more” in Australia. The court heard further serious charges are to be considered in the case.

The court also heard there was CCTV footage of Mr McDonnell loading the machine into a container at the garden centre and giving Mr Leen documents from a shipping company. The offences, on conviction, carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and a maximum life sentence.

The officer also said Mr Leen spent a large amount of time out of Ireland and went to countries including Columbia, Spain, the UAE, Brazil, and the Netherlands. He said he feared that if bail were granted, Mr Leen could “put himself beyond the reach of An Garda Síochána”.

Defence counsel Ronan Prendergast told the court he was instructed that his client had been setting up a travel application for phones that was about to “go live”. He argued that while his client did not own an Irish property, he had ties to Ireland through his family’s presence here.

Mr Prendergast said his client’s father, who watched from the public gallery, had instructed the defence that he would put his home on the market to raise €200,000 bail.

Refusing the application, Ms Justice Ring said Mr Leen enjoyed the presumption of innocence, but she held that the evidence supported the contention and probability that he would not attend his trial if released.
