2017 Dodge Journey

2017 dodge journey

Select a year

  • Lows Underpowered engines, ponderous handling, lack of technology.
  • Verdict The Journey is a practical choice for families on a tight budget, but rival crossovers beat it in most key areas.

Introduced nearly a decade ago, the aging mid-size Journey has survived this long thanks to its affordability and practicality, but it’s decidedly lacking in the latest technology and safety equipment. Despite the availability of five trim packages, the choice of inline-four and V-6 engines, front- or all-wheel drive, and five- or seven-passenger seating, the Journey is just not truly competitive with the best family crossovers. It’s only worth considering if there’s a steep discount working in your favor.

What's New for 2017?

Not much. Other than a few new paint colors, the Journey’s biggest update this year was the renaming of its top trim level from R/T to GT.

Original MSRP:

  • SE: $22,290
  • SXT: $26,590
  • Crossroad: $28,090
  • Crossroad Plus: $29,835
  • GT: $33,090

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The base Journey comes with an underpowered 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and an ancient four-speed automatic transmission that’s best avoided. We can confidently say that its 173 horsepower isn't enough to adequately power this two-ton SUV. Even the 283-hp V-6 model is slower than most rivals. The bigger engine is punchy enough for everyday driving, but its six-speed automatic transmission is sometimes slow on the uptake when you request more power, hampering the Journey’s responsiveness. Front-wheel drive is standard with either engine; all-wheel drive is optional on the V-6 and not available with the inline-four. The Journey’s numb, ponderous handling leaves it wallowing in corners with lots of body roll and imprecise steering. The benefit of its soft suspension, however, is a comfortable ride on the freeway.

Fuel Economy

Interior, comfort, and cargo.

The Journey’s cabin is far from upscale, and fitting anyone in the third row—even children—requires compromises from those in the second row. Cheap-feeling bits, such as a plasticky shifter and hollow-sounding interior door-trim panels, are especially egregious in higher-trim Journeys. Several luxury features, including a power-adjustable passenger seat, cooled seats, and heated rear seats are notable in their absence from the options list. Practicality is one of the few areas where the Journey shines: its interior is easily configurable, and it has tons of cubby storage for odds and ends, even if its total cargo capacity isn’t as large as some rivals.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Journey comes with the same easy-to-use Uconnect touchscreen as many other Dodge products. However, only the optional system, with its larger screen, incorporates the latest connectivity features. The Journey’s standard infotainment setup has a small 4.3-inch touchscreen with only the basics: AM/FM radio, a USB port, and an auxiliary audio jack. We’d choose the optional 8.4-inch touchscreen, which has much larger touch zones and more available features, including optional navigation, voice command, and Bluetooth connectivity. Neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto is offered, and there’s only a a single USB port up front.

2017 3.6 idle only LOUD knock

Well, she brought the car by today and this happened. I know the audio isnt the greatest but  maybe there is enough info there. So, she has been driving it for over 3 weeks like this with the only complaint being the noise. This thing is LOUD at idle. so much that people ask at the stoplights if everything is ok. It goes away the second she raises the idle. It seems like a rod knock but those usually rattle the whole way up, show low oil pressure, and dont run well. I replaced the driver side cylinder head last year to fix the infamous cylinder one misfire issue. No noises till a few weeks ago.

I have done a basic once over on the pullys, belt, and hardware. It really sounds like its coming from the area between the the trans and block but if I go up top, it sounds like it may be coming from the intake. I am getting ready to drain the oil to see if that may give me a hint but....any ideas? I thought i read something before about some purge valves or flaps somewhere that could be causing this. Thanks!!

Please have a listen if you dont mind.

Sounds a lot like timing chain hashing more than a bottom end crank noise. Sound clips are tricky for trouble shooting.

Look for metal filings when you dump the oil. Scan for codes even if mil light not on. If the chain/tensioner was becoming an issue there might be codes for that.  Curious, how many miles on engine.

What is cluster showing for oil pressure at idle.?

Could run for 20 secs without surpentine  belt to make sure it’s block related. Water pump won’t turn, so short test only.

Of course it's John to help out here! Good to see you are still around. I uploaded another video, from inside the cab trying to give somewhat of a sound profile. I know its terrible, its always been hard to hear these kind of things over recordings from our phones. If I let is settle down to idle and blip the throttle, i can make it "rattle" like that gggggg sound when you dry gargle your throat (cant think of another way to describe it, lol).

Another video/audio clip from the cab.

Oil pressure settles between 65 and 70 at idle.

I have not drained the oil yet. Wanted to get a little more testing ideas out of the way before I dry her out. Oil level is good, oil does not appear to be thin. There is just shy of 90k on this car and the front (driver) head I ended up replacing because of the valve issue on Cylinder 1. I ended up replacing it instead of rebuilding so I had a second head to rebuild to help someone else with if the problem over came up.

No fault codes, double checked, no historic codes either. No codes since they were cleared back when I replaced the head.

I was definitely in there working with the chain and guide as I had to completely remove the old head, and even moved the cams over to the new replacement head. All this was finished up I want to say near the end of last year with no rattling noises or any weird noises for that matter.

Thanks for the tips so far both of you. I had to take break for a bit, the sun in Ohio today has been getting me! I did get the serp belt pulled and let it run just enough to hear it at idle and unfortunately the sound was still there. I havent found anything loose yet but Im working my way through still.

My brain keeps wanting to go to the cam guide that I moved over from the original head. I had the valve cover off yesterday and couldn't feel any looseness, but it still is stuck in my head to check it better...

That’s good oil pressure for idle. Timing chain tensioner works with combination of spring and oil pressure, if oil pressure was low, tensioner could have been generating extra noise from that. Back of tensioner against block has a tiny oil passage.

On timing belt motors the full replacement kit had idler pulley, tensioner pulley, new belt, water pump and finally a brand new belt tensioner.  Some car mechanics I know (I’m not a licensed car mechanic) say you should always replace the tensioner on chain motors if you are working with front cover off.   I replaced a weak one on a Malibu 2.4 motor on my wife’s  car a few years ago. On cold start ups it would give a rattle noise similar to what you described (only 60k miles) New chain and tensioner and two Teflon chain case guides got rid of the slowly increasing rattling noise. Awkward and time consuming, as you know.

Hopefully I wrong and it’s something else.  I’m old and my hearing is not great from working in manufacturing for over 35 years.

Hey thanks both of you again. I am oncall right now for work and well, it called lol I havent been able to dig in past the serp belt test yet and she is closed up for the night. I do not have a stethoscope unfortunately. I do have some new oil lines and heater hose, I could give that trick a try! This sing sounds so horrible it draws the attention of EVERYONE that is outside when the vehicle is at idle....Normally a sound this nasty to me leads to near catastrophic failure if you attempt to keep driving it. This thing has not lost any power. still drives smooth, heck, she commutes roughly 100 miles for work each way, each day, and has been driving it like this for about 3 weeks. This one is driving me nuts!

This sound is one that your neighbor heard you coming before you even came round the corner, it is not quiet AT ALL lol.

my son just had a noise coming from his truck that had a 318 engine that was making a noise he thought belt or tensioner so he replaced that stuff first ...ended up being his water pump and also while replacing that he replaced the clutch fan as well...noise gone  it was the water pimp bearing going out with no leaks as well

Hey, thank you for the heads up. I am leaning towards the timing chain/guides area but that whole kit will include a new waterpump as well. Lets see what I come up with today after some more testing.

Has anyone here witnessed a rod knock that would act like this? I would think if it was that big of a problem, I would have looowwww oil pressure, and it would run pretty terrible.

finally got a chance to start ripping into  it again. Intake manifold , driver side valve cover, spark plugs, nothing found inside the cylinders so far. The coolant is draining at the moment, then I will take the passenger side engine mount off to gain access to the cam chain cover on that side of the head. Will see what this can tell me here in a bit.

This is exactly what I am experiencing. The flex plate does make a little clanky noise when moving it by hand from underneath. I need to go get some oil to put back in her before firing up again, but I think its going to be the culprit...

2014 Dodge Caravan Flexplate Clattering Noise - YouTube

Check the grub screws for tightness. I think they use blue loctite on them. If it’s cracked flex plate I think tranny has to be pulled to change it. Very unfortunate, but your head change work did stand up, which is good.

Stay away from this journey

I have had nothing but problems with this car. Especially with the transmission. Dealership told me i needed a flush.so i got the flush..2 weeks later trans was slipping and not shifting.took it back and said i needed new trans at the tune of $5000 Got a rebuilt for 2600 Dealer would not cover or help with cost because i was 3000 miles over warranty. Rip off and lemon Will not buy another dodge product

Great SUV love the power and comfort

Just keep up on the maintenance I've been told. Have had any problems at all.

Started fine, now a deathtrap at 30K miles

Bought the 2017 Journey SXT new 3.6 6 cylinder with 6 speed transmission. I like the 3rd row seats for the grandchildren (though no LATCH for 3rd row seats, so not safe for small children) and it is the right height for me to get in the vehicle. The cargo area (with 3rd row down) is a nice size, fuel economy relatively poor. Handles like a truck (actually my 20 year old chevy truck has a tighter front end). At 15,500 miles the transmission failed (it was the valve body in the transmission). At 23,500 miles it started stalling intermittently and not throwing a code. Without a code and unable to cause it to fail, the dealership told me to continue driving, it will get worse and throw a code. At 29,600 miles, after hundreds of stalls in all driving conditions, it finally threw a code, crankshaft position sensor. Dealer replaced the sensor and it stalled before I made it home. They replaced the connectors on the wiring harness and it stalled again only with a new twist, the traction control light came on and no brakes after I started up and moving again. After taking it back to the dealer, they found that wires in the wiring harness were cut and twisted together. The dealer spliced the wires to fix (rather than replace the wiring harness). Six months after splicing the wires together, the Journey started to stall intermittently again, with no codes being thrown. With no code, the dealer cannot fix. Like before, this went on for several months until a code was thrown, the same code as before "Crankshaft position sensor". Even with the code active, all tests were within range. After opening a STAR case, the Chrysler engineer suggested replacing the A/C Pressure Sensor. Fuel economy immediately improved and the vehicle appeared fixed. The A/C Pressure Sensor is on the same circuit as the crankshaft position sensor, so its failure interferes with the crank shaft sensor data sent to the computer. This is important to note why the Dodge Journey is a DEATHTRAP. Noncritical sensors are on the same circuit as critical sensors, a safety no-no. (this seems to be true of all FCA 3.6 L engines). This fix lasted about 3 months before the fuel economy dropped and the Journey began intermittent stalling again, with no codes thrown. I gave up on the Journey (and Dodge products in general). I cannot have a vehicle that stalls with no solution in sight. I traded it for a Chevy.

<3 my DJ

PROS: Throaty V6, sporty exhaust, 3rd row, AWD, roof rack, towing capability, comfy like caravan just lower roof height, but nice and wide for hip and elbow room, Spare tire mounted outside of vehicle underneath where it should be to maximize interior cargo space. CONS: European styling caused front end to have way to much plastic and I do not like the dodge intrepid placement of the battery in the front bumper outside of the engine compartment. No front footwell lights, but has lights in door.

a dependable car

the awd is great for rain and snow,we have done just normal maintanence.replaced tires .162,000 miles.this is our second one

P06DD Dodge Journey: A Common Code With Uncommon Fixes

P06DD Dodge Journey

Chrysler-made vehicles, such as the Dodge Journey, commonly use an oil pump with a high-pressure mode and a low-pressure mode. P06DD is stored in the PCM’s (powertrain control module) memory when the engine is stuck in low-pressure mode.

P06DD is a very common code to find in the Journey. P06DD can be caused by a failure in the dual-stage oil pump, More often than not, clearing this code will not involve dealing with the oil pump.

P06DD Definition: Dual Stage Oil Pump – Stuck Low

Dodge Journey P06DD Definition

The definition of Chrysler P06DD consists of two parts. The first part is the part of the vehicle that is having the issue, and the second is what that issue is.

Dual Stage Oil Pump

Your Dodge Journey uses a dual-stage oil pump. The design uses seven vanes and a moving element to regulate oil pressure and keep it at a near-constant level. It can run in low or high-pressure mode depending on the engine’s needs.

  • Low-Pressure Mode – This mode is activated when the control solenoid is on. It keeps your Journey’s oil pressure around 29 psi and is active from idle to around 3000 RPM.
  • High-Pressure Mode – High-pressure mode is activated somewhere between 3000-4000 RPM and keeps the engine’s oil pressure around 65 psi. It can kick in earlier if the oil and coolant temperatures are low.

Maximum oil pressure is limited to 145 psi by a relief valve and monitored by the Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) sensor.

The engine goes into low-pressure mode when the oil pressure control solenoid is switched on.

The dual-stage oil pump is stuck in the low-pressure mode described above, which means the engine may not be getting enough oil pressure above 3k RPM.

Dodge Journey P06DD: Symptoms

Assuming there are no other codes, the only symptom you should notice with P06DD is the check engine light.

Dodge Journey P06DD: Causes & Diagnosis

P06DD Diagnosis

Below, we’ve listed some of the most common problems that can cause P06DD in the Dodge Journey. It’s not often caused by a bad oil pump (a common misdiagnosis).

Check TSB’s

The first thing you need to do is check to see if there are any technical service bulletins for your model year Journey. Some years (particularly before 2017) require an ECM reflash to fix this problem.

There are plenty of TSB sites where you can look these up.

Oil Problems

If the engine oil is too low , your Journey’s dual pressure pump can’t increase oil pressure past the low-pressure range. The first thing you should do if you have P06DD is check the oil. Dirty oil can cause P06DD. Any oil that has lost its viscosity can cause this code.

Wrong Oil Filter

Penstar engines will often get P06DD when the wrong type of oil filter was used. If you’ve recently had your oil changed and the check engine light came on, this is a very likely cause.

When replacing your Journey’s oil filter, verify the oil pressure bypass valve is intact. A missing bypass valve is a less likely cause, but as long as you’re down there anyway, you might as well check.

Change the oil filter to the MOPAR Oil filter recommended in the owner’s manual. This is a very common fix for P06DD.

Oil Pressure Sensor

The oil pressure sensor is one of the most common fixes for P06DD. Here’s a video on diagnosing and replacing one on a Chrysler 3.6L engine.

The oil pressure sensor could have a wiring issue (short or open). But, it takes a decent amount of digging to get to the harness. As you can see in the video above, you must pull a lot of the engine apart to get to it.

Mechanical Issue

Here are some of the common mechanical issues that can cause P06DD in the Dodge Journey:

  • Bad/Missing oil bypass valve
  • Bad dual-stage oil pump
  • Use of an oil filter adapter

P06DD in the Dodge Journey can be a challenge to diagnose. But, there many of the common fixes are super easy to check. Good luck!
