El Galeon AndalucÃa
Currently docked in Old San Juan until January 31, 2016, El Galeon is open daily for tours. If you have the chance, take the time to check it out and step back 500 years and see what life was like sailing the seas in the 16th &17th century’s.
The ship is open to visitors daily from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm with five of the six decks available to tour.
El Galeon is 500 ton galleon that is about 160 feet long with a 32 feet beam. The ship has four masts that hold 6 sails for a total of 11,000 square feet. The ship can average speed around 7 and typically has a crew between 15 to 35 people.
Ignacio Fernandez Vial designed the replica for the Nao Victoria Foundation and it took 17 months to build and was launched in Spain in November 2009.
We visited the ship the other day and loved the experience. The weather was on the windy side so the ship was swaying a little, but that just added to the experience, though my wife was not too thrilled about the movement…
The ship is filled with history and being able to stand on the deck and wander around this tall ship really gives you a perspective on how life would have been back in the day. The attention to detail is evident in every part of the ship, from the Captains Wheel to the numerous cannons that protected the ship from pirates and enemies.
You can roam around the ship and take as long or as short as you want, with most areas open to the public. The only negative I will say is that the area on the top deck with the Captains Wheel was roped off and you had to pay an extra $5 if you wanted a photo at the wheel. That dissapointed me.
Having said that, there is plenty to see on the ship and it’s not everyday that you have chance to stand atop of a tall ship and imagine sailing the seas.

A Spanish galleon received a true Brixham welcome when she made her way into the port for the start of the 2023 Brixham Pirate Festival. El Galeon was accompanied into the harbour by the tiny Brixham fishing boat Adela.
The two vessels provided a “Little and Large” spectacle and spectators looked on from the harbour walls as El Galeon made her majestic entrance. The Spanish ship will be open to the public until Monday.

Her stopover in Brixham is part of her 2023 tour of ports in Europe.
The fun of the festival got underway with a pirate “muster” at Bolton Cross at 10am on Saturday, followed by a parade and the official opening, and from then onwards the programme promises three days of family-friendly action. Live music on the main stage under the Old Fish Market canopy will feature new acts as well as old favourites from 10.30am until the end of the afternoon on all three days.
There will be “skirmishes” on board the Golden Hind in the inner harbour at 1pm on Saturday and Sunday. Shanty crews will perform in Fore Street while the Scala Hall will be the venue for children’s entertainment sponsored by Brixham Town Council. traders while food and craft stalls will line the harbourside.
The Brixham Pirate Festival began in 2002 when members of the community decided to create an event to liven up one of the quietest bank holidays of the year. Since those humble beginnings, the festival has grown into one of the biggest pirate gatherings in the world.
The 2022 event saw thousands of pirates make their way to Brixham for the biggest festival yet, and a change of committee during the winter has kept the enthusiasm going.
A spokesman said: “The excitement and enthusiasm amongst the fresh crew is intoxicating and the festival is sure to be the best yet. We don’t want to change the festival that Brixham has come to know and love, but sail it into the future as there are more new adventures on the horizon.”

More about El Galeón
Ships such as this one sailed Florida's coastal waters during the 16th and 17th centuries, crossing the ocean from the Old World to the New for trade and exploration purposes. The Nao Victoria Foundation of Seville, Spain, began building this authentic replica tall ship in 2006. Since her completion, El Galeón has sailed the world and now calls St. Augustine her homeport.
The 170-foot, 495-ton El Galeón requires a crew of 28 to operate the seven sails (more than 9.600 square feet in area) on three masts in the same method used by sailors in the 16th century. The ship was used in the making of the television series "Crossbones" on location in Puerto Rico.
The first historical ship like El Galeón to arrive in St. Augustine was the San Pelayo, the flagship of city founder Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. It was one of the most powerful ships of its day, weighing some 650 tons and carrying 800 colonists and supplies. Menéndez and his colonists established St. Augustine, the first permanent European settlement in the United States, in 1565.
