They are photos of the inside of the Qingdao factory in China that produces Epiphone guitars, and they offer a small look into the facility. A few years ago, I was approached by the founder of Goldfinch Guitars who was trying to convince me to pre-order one of his guitars.

However, due to rising costs in Japan, the production moved to Korea in the 1980s. And by the 1990s, the President of Gibson, David Berryman opened an office in Seoul for Epiphone. In 2004, the demand for Epiphone guitars was so high that production moved to China into a dedicated Epiphone factory that is still operating today, the Qingdao Factory.

Epiphone Sheraton II made in China...
They have been making Epis in China at the Unsung Qingdao pfactory since 2002, and it's the chinese Epiphone division of Gibson. As such, this cihnese plant has access to proprietary manufacturing techniques from Gibson. I have not played a MIC Sheraton II, but I do have a Epi EB-3 bass that is also made in the Qingdao factory.

Having seen footage from inside the Gibson factory, I agree that it seems like there's more hand work in Qing Dao. That's not to say Qing Dao is better, granted - the Gibson factory is simply more modern and mechanized ...

Most Epiphone guitars are now made in Quingdao, China - where Gibson opened two factories in 2004. The main GQ factory has a capacity of around 700 guitars per day, with their staff having an average of 10 years of experience (at time of writing this article), and their quality control staff around 12 years.

Which korean Epiphone factory is better?
The Qingdao factory is owned by Gibson and managed by Gibson staff. IMO the guitars being produced there are as good as anything else. As Davies pointed out you can get a good one or one not so good regardless of which factory it comes from. This is true with all brands and not just Epiphone.

I think that Gibson made the right choice by moving Epiphone to a dedicated factory instead of a handful of OEM factories that make Epis today and ESP's tomorrow, and their own brands like Silver Star, Agile, and Indie on Wednesdays and Thursdays... or whatever their production schedule was!
