Good morning

Good evening

“Uffizi Gallery in Florence is a world class museum with an incredible renaissance art collection. Enjoy a guided tour with a Local Specialist to make the experience more memorable, especially when in front of Botticelli’s stunning ‘Birth of Venus’ painting”

Pino, Travel Director

See Michelangelo's frescoed ceiling in the Sistine Chapel

One of the most important structures of the Catholic faith, the Vatican City’s Sistine Chapel is a must-see on a tour of Italy. Though the chapel walls have witnessed centuries of worship, it’s the renaissance ceiling paintings of Michelangelo that will leave you in awe.

Visit the glamorous Isle of Capri

Enjoy the classic Italian summer in Italy’s picture-perfect Gulf of Naples. Famed for its crystal grottos, dramatic coastlines and endless glamour, our trips to Italy are complete with a day of freedom spent under a striped umbrella, watching sailboats pass by.

Cruise your way through Venice

The charm found in the canals of Venice is nothing short of irresistible. Admire gothic palaces and postcard bridges whilst adrift in a gondola, gaining an understanding of life in a city that floats. Exploring a city by foot will never be the same after a trip to Venice.

Journey to the well-preserved ruins of Pompeii

An unfathomable history lesson is found in the archaeological ruins of Pompeii. Buried and preserved by the ash of a volcano eruption in the year 79, in this Italian town you will discover the progressive life of early Roman times as you walk within the parameters of an open-air time capsule of life on Earth.

Go shopping in Italy's fashion capital Milan

Armani, Gucci, Prada and Versace. These are some of the prestigious fashion brands that call the Italian city of Milan home. In between yearning through boutiques and department stores, stop to sample the city’s delicacies like breaded veal cutlet and ossobuco.

Our top 5 things to do in Italy

It's the moments of quiet stillness that take your breath away on a Trafalgar tour through Italy. Sitting in the calm halls of the Vatican. Floating on the canals of Venice. Standing beside the ruins of Pompeii.

Uffizi Gallery

The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters are found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo dress Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River will show you the building’s architectural brilliance.

Vatican Museums

A collection of Christian artwork that spans centuries and stirs the soul is found in Rome’s Vatican Museums. From the intricate ceiling by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel to the detailed Pope portraits from the 16th century to today, you will be lost for words once inside this blessed museum complex.

Doge's Palace

Home to the leader of Venice from its opening in 1340, Doge’s Palace summarizes the sparkle of this city. An opulent example of Venetian Gothic architecture and home to numerous historical works, this museum is a must when you visit Venice.

Best museums in Italy

The epicenter of the Catholic faith and the birthplace of art’s most renowned masters. Our guided tours of Italy will take you to the many museums found here, whether in the Sistine Chapel, by the canals of Venice or in the grand galleries of Tuscany.

The authentic carbonara experience will take place in Rome, covered in salty Pecorino Romano cheese. A simple dish inspiring heart-warming meal times, this pasta will connect you with Italy’s rich culinary customs - an impressive evolution from its supposed heritage as a coal-miner’s meal.

Pollo alla Cacciatora

Literally translating to ‘hunter’ in Italian, cacciatore offers an appreciation for Italy’s meals of days gone by. Typically a preparation of rabbit or chicken, it’s the simmering tomato stew that makes this dish so mouthwatering. Satisfy a genuine hunger and consume with hand-ripped bread.

Italy tours are best served with an oversized slice of tiramisu. Cementing this country's obsession with espresso, this cake of layered biscuits soaked in coffee is the perfect after hours pick-me-up before an evening stroll through the charming streets.

Best food in Italy

A date with Italian food will likely start and end with a slice of pizza. But it’s the menu items that we share with you in between that will take your appreciation to new heights; think cacciatore and Carbonara with a slice of tiramisu in between.

What to pack for Italy

People packing for a tour

A classic linen outfit

The Italians are famous for their equal parts glamorous and effortless dress sense. Look the part with a few ensembles featuring classic linens in navy and white.

A blank journal

With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Italy, you might find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to remember the traditional Italian recipes you learn.

With such a large expanse of space to explore, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about Italian history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.

A small blanket

When exploring the soul-stirring setting of Tuscany, a picnic may call. Come prepared with a small blanket to cover in wine and cheese.

Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes

A classic memoir that brought the romance of Tuscany to the world, there’s no better time to read this book than when venturing through the country yourself.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and reusable toiletry bottles.

TAUCK VALUE INCLUDES

A boat cruise along the Mediterranean shores of Cinque Terre for an in-depth look at these remote, centuries-old coastal villages (weather permitting)

SEE WHAT YOUR JOURNEY INCLUDES

Active components such as hiking, bicycling and walking longer distances may be included, and hills and/or uneven terrain may be encountered on several days. Guests should be able to walk two to three miles and stand for long periods of time with no difficulty.

Often robust – may include long days, active sightseeing, early starts, evening activities, significant travel times.

Along Europe's Scenic "Yellow Roads"

Think of Italy and a host of images comes to mind... the glories of Rome, taking shape in the now silent roars of the Colosseum, priceless works of art by Michelangelo and other famed Italian artists whose masterpieces eternally evoke awe in Europe's greatest museums...

Discover bella Italia on one of Tauck's most popular journeys... in scenic Tuscan hill towns, centuries-old cities and countryside villages, and along the Amalfi Coast… in the treasures of Florence, coloring an era of enlightenment with a rich palette of paintings and architecture by Renaissance luminaries like da Vinci, Botticelli and Brunelleschi... along saltwater roads in Venice lined with magnificent palaces frozen in time... in sun-dappled Tuscan villages, medieval icons reigning over vineyard-draped landscapes that produce wines and foods that are regionally inspired, locally flavored and ultimately delizioso... and on an after-hours guided visit to the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel for an extraordinary look at ageless masterpieces – without the crowds – during a three-night stay in the Eternal City...

A trattoria lunch in Orvieto

Enjoy lunch at a traditional trattoria in orvieto.

By definition, an Italian "trattoria" is an eatery that's a bit more formal than an "osteria" (which traditionally emphasize wine over the simple food they serve) but less formal than a "ristorante." In any case, the typical trattoria is a casual, welcoming establishment that serves plentiful portions of well-prepared local or regional specialties, often "family style" and without a printed menu. While visiting the Umbrian hill town of Orvieto, you'll enjoy a traditional lunch at just such a place – a trattoria about which one guest said, "the ambiance is rustic and down to earth... I almost felt like I was in someone's welcoming home dining room..."

The Westin Excelsior, Florence

Nights 9, 10 and 11

Enjoy your own personal Renaissance at The Westin Excelsior, Florence

The Westin Excelsior, Florence is an undisputed masterpiece in its own right: a stunning Renaissance palace with cutting-edge contemporary interiors, flawlessly paired with unique Renaissance features. The perfect mix of style and design, each of its guest rooms and suites is beautifully decorated in period style, offering a taste of Florentine tradition. No wonder it's been voted one of the 500 best hotels in the world by the readers of Travel + Leisure…

Ancient Pompeii... frozen in time

Back to 1st century pompeii.

Pompeii was a prosperous Roman city with a population of approximately 27,000 souls until August 24, 79 AD – the fateful day that Mount Vesuvius erupted and completely buried it and its inhabitants under a blanket of volcanic ash. And there it sat until its discovery by an architect more than 1,500 years later. It would be another 150 years before some of the world's earliest archaeologists began excavating the site in the 1740s, slowly revealing a city frozen in time. Today, as you walk with a local guide among the remains of Pompeii's buildings and streets – still an active archaeological site – you'll get a firsthand glimpse of what life might have been like in the Roman Empire during the 1st century AD.

From start to finish, this trip was so wonderful... Every day was special; I think I might actually take this same tour again in a few years!

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE:  Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS:   are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE:   Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much stricter in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S.,  no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Italy. For complete vaccination and inoculation information please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking  here.

If you are a resident of another country,  please contact an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Classic Italy covers 1,270 mi (2,043 km) and, though paced to accommodate all our guests, is nonetheless an active and extensive tour. To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Italy is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, some dating from antiquity. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture will present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. You will encounter cobblestone streets, narrow passageways, and some steep and winding staircases. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do at the various sites and towns is at your discretion.

In addition, coach travel along the many "Yellow Roads" on this tour are very windy and may cause you some discomfort if you are prone to motion sickness. If you are, we advise bringing motion sickness remedies or medication with you.

We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The weather in Italy is temperate and unpredictable. Generally, spring and fall average high temperatures range from 55 to 75°F (13 to 24°C) and summer high temperatures range from 75 to 85°F (24 to 29°C). Rain falls evenly throughout the year in Venice, but more seasonally in Rome and Sorrento, where summers are dryer than winters. Venice experiences very high humidity, with hot weather in July and August. Due to its location on the Adriatic coast, Venice often experiences thunderstorms and rain showers which, particularly in spring and autumn, tend to cause flooding, known as the 'acqua alta'.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

When packing for your trip to Italy, it is important to keep in mind the time of year you are traveling and the current weather conditions for that time. The climate of northern Italy ranges from Alpine near Switzerland to continental along the Po River to Venice. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket for men are acceptable dining attire. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but certainly be comfortable.

Most Catholic churches in Italy require that your knees and shoulders be covered when you enter, even during the hot days of summer.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. By law in Italy, irons and ironing boards are not made available to guests at hotels. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to northern Italy:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Best time for travel reflections of italy.

While just about any month is great to visit Italy, there are a few prime times of the year for the Reflections of Italy tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.

Throughout Italy, the most popular times to visit are April, May, June, September, and October. Along the coast, July and August are busy with locals and Europeans on summer holiday, while cities are usually less crowded.

Winter: Go in December, January, and February for Venice, where you can take a walk beside the canals on a quiet evening and hear your footsteps echoing off the water.

Spring: Enjoy Italy in the spring season, with fewer tourists and comfortable temperatures. In March, the weather is warm, but not too hot. Just imagine exploring the towns’ cobblestone streets during this quieter time of year.

Fall: After the busy summer season, you’ll encounter more of the locals. Fall is a fantastic season to travel in Tuscany, with fewer crowds, cooler days, and a bit of foliage to enjoy – all pairing well with a glass of red wine!

In Milan, take in some of the city’s iconic sights on a walking tour. View the La Scala Opera House and Vittorio Emanuele Gallery before visiting the Duomo – a Gothic cathedral that is the third largest in Europe. Your second choice is to join a local guide for a tour of the Quadrilatero della Moda, Milan’s high-fashion district, including visits to some of the city’s best ateliers and fashion stores.

Enjoy a pleasant serenade with dinner in Trastevere, a charming, bohemian district where Rome’s locals often frequent. Indulge in a hearty, traditionally Roman menu, complete with wine. As you savor the delicious tastes of Italy, talented performers entertain you with folk songs. This lively, fun-filled evening will be an unforgettable part of your visit to Rome and an engaging immersion into Italian culture.

Experience the romance that can only be found in Venice – La Serenìssima – while traveling on its famous waterways. Partake in one of Venice’s most famous pastimes – a gondola cruise. Take a pleasant stroll toward the Grand Canal to board your gondola. As you relax in your elegant watercraft, your gondolier navigates the Grand Canal as well as smaller side canals. Admire the scenery as you listen to the melodic voice serenading you in true Italian style – just like in those romantic Italian movies!

This evening, set off on a scenic drive to nearby Galluzzo, famous for its Carthusian monastery which rests upon one of the beautiful hills surrounding Florence. Prior to dinner, enjoy an after-hours visit to this 14th-century monastery – La Certosa.* Revel in the beauty that lurks inside and experience the monastery’s magnificence as you learn about monastic daily life. Then your evening of fun continues at one of the area’s most popular dining establishments. Experience an authentic and traditional dinner served family-style! Savor local wines and Tuscan food and enjoy the entertainment. It’s a memorable – truly Italian – evening out that you won’t want to miss!

Explore Cortona, the postcard-worthy village that serves as the setting for Under the Tuscan Sun.

The company also operates daylong bike tours that include lunch, as well as guided outings along the Appian Way.

City Wonders – Florence Fully Guided Tour with Uffizi Gallery, Michelangelo's David and Accademia

Price: Adults from $108; kids from $102 Duration: 5 hours

Bypass the lines to enter both the Uffizi Gallery – home to 14th-century and Renaissance masterpieces by the likes of Botticelli, Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo and Caravaggio – and the Accademia Gallery – where Michelangelo's 14-foot David sculpture resides – on this tour. In addition to independent visits to the galleries, the small-group outing includes a two-hour guided walking tour of the center of Florence to see top sights, such as its cathedral, the Ponte Vecchio bridge, the leather market and Piazza della Signoria. Tour-takers generally appreciate the guides' commentary regarding the city's art, architecture and history. Others warned future travelers that the visits to the galleries are unguided.

Half-day tours with 10 and 10:30 a.m. start times happen daily. Prices are about $108 for adults and $102 for children 4 to 14. Children 3 and younger tour for free. Groups are limited to 17 people.

Walkabout Florence Tours – Cinque Terre Day Trip from Florence with optional Hiking Tou

Price: Adults from 113 euros (about $123); kids from 100 euros (about $109) Duration: 13 hours

This daylong expedition takes travelers to the towns comprising the Cinque Terre , a string of old fishing villages overlooking the Mediterranean Sea that form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Buses travel from Florence to Manarola, home to vineyards and colorful buildings typical of the area. From there, trains head to Corniglia, which boasts unrivaled views of the sea. After lunch, participants can either hike the mule trails that connect the towns or ride a train to Vernazza, where swimming or visiting cafes and bars are among the optional activities. Trains then proceed to Monterosso, a town known for both beaches and shops. Weather permitting, the tour also includes a boat ride to the fifth and final Cinque Terre town, Riomaggiore. Trip-takers rave about both the scenic locations and the efficient, personable guides.

Tourgoers return to Florence approximately 13 hours after the daily 7:30 a.m. departure time. Tickets for the tour start at around 113 euros (about $123) for adults and 100 euros (about $109) for kids 8 to 17. Children younger than 8 are not permitted. Prices do not include lunch in Corniglia, but an upgrade is available for an additional fee.

Delicious Bologna – Daylight Food Tour Bologna

Price: Adults from 90 euros (about $98); kids from 70 euros (about $76) Duration: 4 to 5 hours

Taste some of the essentials of Italian cuisine on this small-group walking tour. In addition to a light breakfast of cappuccino and cornetto (a croissant-like pastry) and lunch of multiple pasta dishes, this outing features samples of local cheese, cured meat, vinegar and wine. It also visits a food market and a pasta factory. Throughout, guides provide commentary about regional culture and traditions, which culinary enthusiasts tend to find informative.

Tours take place every day except Sunday at 10 a.m. and last four to five hours. Groups of up to eight people begin the day at the Piazza di Porta Ravegnana. Fees start at 90 euros (about $98) for adults and 70 euros (about $76) for kids and teens ages 2 to 14. (There's no charge for infants.) Additional food and wine tours, as well as cooking classes, are hosted by Delicious Bologna.

Streaty Street Food Tours of Italy – Palermo Street Food and Local Market Tour

Price: Adults from 54 euros (about $59); kids from 20 euros (about $22) Duration: 3 hours

Samples are likely to include arancina (stuffed rice balls), cazzilli fritters, pani câ meusa (a veal offal roll), sfincione (focaccia with tomato sauce), cannoli filled with ricotta, broscia col gelato (an ice cream sandwich) and seasonal items, as well as beer and wine. After departing from Teatro Massimo, tours wind through backstreets rather than the city's main thoroughfares. Travelers typically find this tour both fun and educational.

Walks last three hours and are available at multiple times Monday through Saturday all year, usually starting between 10 and 11 a.m. Prices start at 54 euros (about $59) for participants ages 12 and older and 20 euros (about $22) for children 6 to 11. Groups are limited to 10 participants. The company also offers an evening food tour in Palermo.

Etna Tribe – Excursion Etna and Taormina

Price: Adults from 85 euros (about $93); kids from 70 euros (about $76) Duration: 9 hours

Explore Mount Etna , an active volcano on the east coast of Sicily that ranks as the highest island mountain in the Mediterranean, on this daylong tour. Your guide will drive you from Catania to a section on Etna's south face where you'll hike up to 6,560 feet above sea level, or (for additional fees) take a cable car up to 8,200 feet. From there, you'll have the option of taking a van to Torre del Filosofo, which sits at an elevation of more than 9,500 feet. With an alpine guide leading the way, you'll explore the lava-carved terrain. The trip also includes a stop at an organic farm and a visit to the town of Taormina, where you'll have time to wander among attractions, such as a cathedral, a clock tower, a palace and a theater, before the drive back to Catania. Tour-takers enjoy walking among the volcano craters and learning about the area from the friendly, accommodating guides.

Pickup starts at 8:30 a.m. and tours, which occur daily, last approximately nine hours. Prices start at 85 euros (about $93) for those 12 and older, 70 euros (about $76) for kids ages 3 to 11 and 20 euros (about $22) for infants. Paying online in advance may save you a few euros per ticket. The optional cable car ride costs an additional 50 euros (about $55) and the high-altitude option, including both the cable car and the van rides, start at 78 euros (about $85) per person. Etna Tribe also offers sunset excursions to the mountain, among other options.

Small Group Tour of Sicily: Highlights (Maximum 8 Guests)

This was a great experience. Four Australians and four from the USA. The hotels were top notch, the tour guides knowledgeable, the communication was very well done. There was one glitch related to transporting luggage from one hotel to another, which was immediately fixed. Wine tours, included meals and of course Sicily. All eight of us enjoyed this tour immensely, and my wife and I will definitely travel via Tour Radar again. Would love to assemble the same group!

Small Group Sicily Food & Wine Tour (Maximum 8 Guests)

I was extremely impressed with everything surrounding the tour. This was the first tour I’ve taken after years of traveling. I enjoyed all of our guides and the knowledge they shared with us about the area we were in. The itinerary was very manageable and loved having enough time to explore on our own at each destination. The wineries we visited were beautiful and the wines were excellent.

Amalfi Coast Walking - Agriturismo

We had a wonderful time hiking the Amalfi coast. Matteo, our guide, was great! Super nice, considerate, polite. He was always on top of safety and the well-being of all of us throughout our hikes; he was always ready to answer questions and to provide information about alternate activities. Overall, it was a great experience, although there are a few things that can be improved. Agriturismo Luna D'Argerola: Facilities/ Accommodations: good, clean and well mintained. Food: very mediocre (a bowl of lettuce is not a salad, especially in the Mediterranean region; poor preparation in general, lacking in variety; very low-quality wine) Staff: not well trained to interact with tourists, rude and not accommodating for basic courtesy like leaving me in the common area in an absolute dark knowing I was there using the WIFI; no information whatsoever upon arrival of our group

Sicilian Landscapes: Catania-Catania (8 days/7 nights)

1st nite was awful .no proper welcome. Put in a basement of Il Principe fr dinner very slow service food was awful..cold and boring.air con also broken. Making arancini shoulf have staryed earlier. Dinner was very late. 3rd day we were dumped fr 2 hrs at shopping outlet in the middle of nowhere. No one was interested in designer goods. Skip it and give us more time in Cefalu. Not enough time there to explore. Cheese tasting in Ragusa was fiasco. Forced to leave by other tour guide Daniela after 5 mins even though we had bought wine to drink. In Marsala we had to wait fr Daniela group half an hr. Cut our tasting short. Last night dinner no alternative to fish except salad. Not satisfactory.

Hiking in the Dolomites Tour

Hiking in the Dolomites

Great value for money. Good tour guide. Excellent travel company. Some days the hiking was a bit light. Would have given it 5 stars if the hiking was every day. Also tourradar/intrepid could also consider providing a higher cost tour where we stay at different refuges every day. This will reduce the transportation constraints and time and increase the Dolomites amazing experience.

Local Living Italy—Amalfi Coast Tour

Local Living Italy—Amalfi Coast

I completed an Upgraded tour in Italy recently - the tour itself was great (although accommodation not great but I new that going into a G Adventures tour), the guide amazing but its just dealing with the company is where the real struggle lies. The website is often down, you have to wait an hour on the phone just to make a payment as you cannot make payments via our account on the website. No one calls you back or replies to your emails. And although I live about 3km from the head office I get charged a sneaky $30 international currency exchange fee! If you like things to be unnecessarily hard, frustrating and time consuming this is the company for you!

Best of Sicily - 8 Days (Small Group Tour)

I took the Best of Sicily Tour with TourRadar. We had a small group of 5. It was fantastic. We had a different tour guide each day but one. They were all very knowledgeable, well educated in their fields of study, and answered all our questions and more! They made sure that the restaurants were well aware of those of us with food allergies. Communication with TourRadar and Click Tours before and during the trip was easy and they responded immediately to any questions or concerns. I will use them again!

Deluxe Italian Escape with picturesque Cinque Terre

We were in Italy! We liked the places visited that were chosen by the tour! No need to worry about payments for hotels and trains! We appreciated having free time in each city! We would have liked the hotels to be closer to the train stations to avoid expansive taxis and for it to be easier with the suitcase. Not easy to know which bus to take to get there and which stop... We would have preferred a shuttle (included in the price) to pick us up and take us back to our hotel for all the activities/cities (Colleseum, gondola ride...). It is more reassuring when you are in a foreign country. It was great that «Just Drive » was able to do this in Florence! We were in Pisa from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. It's so pretty! We could not climb to the top of Pisa before 9:00am. It’s was sad that we couldn’t see the inside because we had to leave for Quince Terra. We enjoyed the organized tour! We were able to discover important places in Italy! Thank you for doing your best that you could so that we could go to Quince Terre and Pisa despite the people who canceled and thank you for being available through WhatsApp every day! :)

Taste of Salento-Authentic Culinary Experience Tour

Taste of Salento-Authentic Culinary Experience

We have recently returned from Discover Matera and Taste of Salento tour arranged by Soleto Travel. Omar of Soleto Travel has been most helpful and responsive to our pre tour and on tour queries. In one instance he arranged invaluable medical assistance following an accident to my partner. The tour was excellent and met expectations. Be prepared to climb a lot of steps in Matera. In particular our hosts at Tenuta Linazza (masseria) were most welcolming and the food was genuine Italian with a wide variety of dishes available - ranging from delicious desserts to great pasta and seafoood dishes accompanied by hgh quality Puglia wines. Emiliio is a chef extraordinaire as well as being a most professional and insightful guide into Puglia customs and culture. His family members Clara, Michel and Antonio also acted as tour guides and shared these same attributes. The tour flexibility offered is a plus in satisfying the consensus wishes of touring participants. Accomodation at the farm cannot be faulted - spacious and clean with good facilities. There is the added bonus of Pongo the family dog who occasionally walks with you to the local coffee outlet to meet the Castiglione locals.

Mamma Mia! - 13 Days/12 Nights Tour

Mamma Mia! - 13 Days/12 Nights

This tour allowed me to experience THE must see locations in Italy. The guides were extremely knowledgeable. In addition, at each location, the travelers had time to explore the city and cites on their own. The tour guides also had tremendous food recommendations. Honestly, pizza will never be the same. If you like to plan your trips down to the very last detail but don’t know where to start, go with Italy on a Budget!

Discover Matera and Taste of Salento Tour Tour

Discover Matera and Taste of Salento Tour

SOLETO TRAVEL: First of all, Omar at Soleto Travel was great, from my first inquiry to the last day of the trip. He returned emails promptly, answered questions clearly, made suggestions and generally made the whole experience very easy. I highly recommend Soleto travel and would not hesitate to book any of their tours. The trip I took was Discover Matera and a Taste of Salento. I was a solo female traveler on this tour and just took a leap of faith - it was well worth it. TASTE OF SALENTO: Pretend that someone told you that you had long lost relatives who owned an olive oil farm in Salento and wanted you to come visit for six days? That is exactly what this felt like. From the moment Antonio (the father) picked me up at the train station to the moment Emilio dropped me off in Matera, I could not have been treated more warmly. This did not feel like a “tour”, it felt like a “stay”. Don’t get caught up in the printed itinerary and stated activities. Emilio adjusts the schedule based on the season, the weather and other circumstances. You might not get every single thing listed, but you will get a lot more that are not. Emilio fixes a light breakfast every morning and explains where we’re going and what we’re doing that day. Because this experience is capped at four people (we had two), Emilio drives you in the family car to all the cool places (many that would be inaccessible by a tour bus). You walk around while he explains the history of the place or his experiences there. You set the pace (the other woman in my tour had hurt her foot and couldn’t walk very fast - no problem. We were still able to see everything). And you get free time to walk around, grab a bite, shop or just sit and appreciate the experience. The highlight of every day was dinner. Emilio is a fabulous chef and prides himself on cooking fresh, organic, local food paired with local wine (all served with his family’s organic olive oil of course). His passion is evident and every meal was excellent. Two of the days we had Carlo as a guide, who was fun and knowledgeable. One day Emilio’s wife Clara took us wine tasting and sightseeing. And of course Antonio, who was a character, popped by to say hi and stir up trouble! I could go on and on but I will stop and just say this: If you want a 4-star hotel with a “farm” theme in a big city, this is not for you. This is an actual farm in a very small town with very comfortable accommodations run by a sweet and generous couple (plus four kids and a dog) who want nothing more than for you to learn about, experience, and hopefully appreciate, the land they love. No tour buses, no guides with hankies tied to poles, no one-size-fits-all restaurants or cookie-cutter tours. Live like a local, with locals, for a one-of-a-kind experience. I highly recommend it. DISCOVER MATERA: I knew nothing about Matera so I was excited to arrive and see this beautiful city. The only thing I would mention is the whole city is practically stairs, including up to the room, so it might be a difficult city for some people with mobility issues so keep that in mind when booking. That said it is such a beautiful and unique city and I loved just wandering around and getting lost in all the little streets and passages. The accommodations were fabulous and so unique (a room built into a cave!) My guide was Cosimo, who took me one day on a city tour and the next on a tour of Murgia Materana, the park across the ravine. He was so knowledgable, friendly and patient with all my questions. Even though I was the only one, our tour went beyond the allotted time and he did not complain or try to rush me. I also got a private food and wine tasting with Lucca who was also wonderful, knowledgeable and generous. The place I stayed had a restaurant, but because I was the only one there, I would have my breakfast on site and then they would book dinner for me at a nice local restaurant. I loved Matera and wish I had a couple more days there. All in all this was the perfect vacation. The people were wonderful, the food and wine delicious, the history fascinating, the scenery breathtaking and the experience unique. I highly recommend this tour and Soleto Travel to anyone!

Italy By Train Tour

  • Train & Rail

Italy By Train

Our tour included a 2 day rail pass for Cinque Terre for a party of four, but it turns out what we received was only good for one day. We found this out when our tickets were checked by an official from TrenItalia. As a result we were each fined 55 Euros, plus we were required to purchase a ticket back to La Spezia. I have contacted Wingbuddy, but their after sales service is abysmal. They appear to be seriously understaffed. They no longer answer the phone for existing reservations, and they don't accept voicemail messages. As a result you need to send them an email, and it typically takes several days to get a response. This incident happened on Sept. 19, and as of Oct. 1 it has not been resolved. To date, I have received one email that says this will require investigation. While the rest of the experience was good, the poor customer service makes me very hesitant to recommend them.

Reviews of Small Group tours to Italy

This tour was the very best experience we have ever had traveling overseas. The booking process was seamless and painless. We felt especially grateful that while the group was limited to 8 participants, it was guaranteed to proceed with 2 people. As it ended up, our trip was just me and my husband and we felt so fortunate to have had the attention of the guides in such a personal way. The guides were all tremendous and I am confident that a larger group would have felt equally tended to. Special thanks to our guides and drivers: Denise, Orazio, Roberto, Carlos, Fabio and Massimo. Part of what was truly evident was how passionate they each were about Sicily and how many of them had connections with people at the restaurants, local businesses and attractions that we went to. We felt like we were in such good hands during the time we were with all of the guides. Each tour and activity was enlightening and educational. The included lunches and other meals were top notch. The opening night walking food and wine tour was a great way to kickoff the trip. There were some others who joined us for that portion, and it was most welcome. I don't think it would have been as much fun for the restaurants and enoteca to have just 2 people and the guide show up, and we knew the rest of the trip we would have individual attention. We felt pampered with our lunches on the Mafia tour, at the winery on Etna, in Marzememi and Agrigento. There was never a feeling of penny-pinching, more plush and like what we would have chosen for ourselves! The selected hotels were excellent! Centrally located, each with a fantastic breakfast spread and fun bar/restaurants. We would happily go back to any of them again and recommend them. We loved the scheduling each day and felt like we had a great mix of free time to explore on our own. Lastly, Graziana was out lifeline while we were traveling. She connected with us daily to check in, and to share the next days plan and name of our guide and where they would meet us. She made dinner reservations for us while we were there and provided recommendations that were helpful. We didn't encounter any issues, but felt that we had a ready ally if needed. Massimo also checked in midtrip, so we truly felt like everyone was interested in us having the best possible trip. I cannot wait to return to Sicily. We have recommended Sicily Activities to many people since our return and would book again in a heartbeat.
The food and guides were great! Hotels were very comfortable. Drivers were excellent!

DAY 1 – ARRIVAL

This tour starts in Bari and ends in Venice. You can fly into Bari and home from Venice.

You will arrive in Italy at Bari airport, and be privately transferred to your hotel in Alberobello, Apulia. There will be a welcome briefing from your local tour host at the hotel, followed by a delicious welcome dinner for your first night in the country.

Southern Italy Puglia

DAY 2 – ALBEROBELLO, LOCOROTONDO AND CISTERNINO

Your first full day of this tour will start with breakfast at your hotel, after which you will be met by a private driver-guide who will take you around the Val d’Itria. This is a beautiful drive through woodlands and vineyards in the countryside, and your first stop will be in the village of Locorotondo.

Locorotondo is a beautiful, quiet hilltop town in Puglia, perfect for spending a morning people-watching from a shaded cafe. The historic town centre is famous for its circular shape and is a maze of whitewashed streets that are full of the interesting old buildings and baroque architecture, ideal for strolling around if you want to stretch your legs.

Next, you will visit Cisterno, which is thought to have been inhabited as early as the Middle Palaeolithic period. Now, the charming town maintains a historic atmosphere and is full of pretty white houses, beautiful churches and a central square that offers panoramic views of your surroundings.

Lunch will be served after a wine and cheese tasting session in Cisterno, sampling some of the area’s best produce. You will eat at a local Masseria; a farmhouse complex found across the Puglia area that has been fortified and was usually built in the 16th century. On your return to Alberobello, you will be given the rest of the afternoon to explore the town on your own.

Alberobello is a town that is best known for its streets of distinctive, whitewashed  trulli  huts with conical stone roofs, clustered together to create a truly unique settlement. The world  trulli  comes from the Greek ‘tholos’ which means dome, and many of the roofs are painted with symbols which just adds to their other-worldly effect. The Rione Monti quarter if the town has the best collection of the buildings and is an absolute must-see for your time in Alberobello.

You will spend the evening in Alberobello, and enjoy another night at your hotel.

DAY 3 – OSTUNI, POLIGNANO AND MONOPOLI

Your third day of this tour includes more excursions from Alberobello to nearby towns in the Apulia area, again getting the chance to see more of the beautiful Italian countryside as you travel.

First visit Ostuni, which is nicknamed the ‘White Town’ because of the whitewashed houses that make up the town’s historic centre and is spread out across three hills that are over 200 metres above sea level. Ostuni’s architectural highlight is the Romanesque-Gothic cathedral from the 15th century, but there are also many elegant houses and churches are particularly lovely to look at in the old town as well, along with ancient town gates still allowing visitors in through the Aragonese walls that guard the settlement.

The next stop on the tour is Polignano; a town which is thought to be one of the oldest settlements in the Puglia area. Perched on the edge of a rocky gorge, Polignano is a lovely place to just sit and watch the waves from its popular Cala Porto beach, or to explore in the early afternoon and discover the snippets of poetry that adorn buildings around the town.

Your final stop will be Monopoli, home to the ‘paese vecchio’ in the centre of the town that features multiple churches lined up next to one another. The domestic buildings in this area are charming and have been inhabited by generations of the same families who still work in fishing, farming and winemaking.

Your driver will drop you back off in Alberobello at the end of the day for your final night there.

DAY 4 – MATERA AND SORRENTO

After breakfast this morning, your private driver will meet you at your hotel in Alberobello and transfer you to your accommodation in Sorrento. On the way, you will stop off in the historic location of Matera and have free time to explore the city.

Matera is the third oldest city in the world and is overflowing with stories and history, the most fascinating element of which are the man-made caves that have been carved into the area’s limestone. You can visit these underground homes that have contributed to Matera’s title of a World Heritage Site, and learn more about what life in these caves would have been like.

Matera was named the cultural capital of Europe in 2019, and along with the fascinating cave systems is also home to several beautiful churches, pedestrianised squares and streets of shops and cafes. You might also recognise its surrounding landscape from several films and television shows, as the area’s dramatic scenery makes it a very popular location for filming.

You will have time for lunch in Matera before returning to your driver and continuing to Sorrento, where you will spend the night.

DAY 5 – AMALFI DRIVE

Today your driver-guide will take you along the Amalfi Coast; one of Italy’s most popular destinations. Enjoy the dramatic cliffside landscape and seaside atmosphere as you travel, with miles of beautiful coastline, pretty villages and luxurious beach resorts to admire on the journey.

You will first visit the historic, cliffside town of Amalfi, with free time to discover some of its medieval architecture or walk along the seafront promenade and admire the boats tethered in the marina. After Amalfi, you will stop in Minori and experience a dessert tasting session that centres around lemons, one of the Amalfi Coast’s finest ingredients. This will take place at Sal de Riso, a restaurant owned by one of Italy’s most famous pastry chefs.

From Minori you will travel to the romantic location of Ravello; a town spread out across steep, terraced slopes cut into the cliffs. Ravello is one of the best spots on the Amalfi Coast to enjoy panoramic views of the ocean, and is filled with beautiful gardens and quiet corners to stop and catch your breath.

Your driver will drop you back in Sorrento in time for an evening meal of your choosing.

DAY 6 – POMPEII

After breakfast at your hotel, today’s itinerary consists of a visit to Pompeii for a guided tour around one of the best-preserved ancient Roman settlements in Italy, thanks to the eruption of nearby Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. It is also one of the country’s most popular towns with tourists, and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its historical value as an archaeological location.

Your private tour guide will tell you about Pompeii’s origins as a holiday resort for wealthy Romans and show you the remains of some of the civic buildings in the town that showcase some of the Roman Empire’s finest architecture. Amongst these iconic ruins is the House of Mysteries; a building named after the murals covering its interior that depict the initiation rites of a cult of the Greek god of wine and madness, Dionysus.

Pompeii is known for the historic graffiti that can still be found on the walls of the majority of its buildings, which historians have used to learn a lot about the lives and attitudes of Roman people. At the time of the eruption elections meant to be happening in the town, and so much of the graffiti is related to political figures and events, as well as some cruder writing!

On your return to Sorrento, you will be treated to a wonderful candlelit dinner on a terrace with a sea view, and enjoy some of the area’s best food and drink for your final night in the area.

DAY 7 – OPTIONAL DISCOVERY

At the end of your first week in Italy, you have a day of free time to allow for rest and relaxation, or for the chance to visit different parts of the area.

If you do decide to spend the day exploring, we recommend an afternoon visit to the Pompeii Archeological Park, a boat excursion in Capri or along the Amalfi Coast, or a combination of visiting Pompeii again with Vesuvio.

DAY 8 – HIGH-SPEED TRAIN TO ROME

After breakfast in Sorrento, you will be transferred to Naples Railway Station and catch the high-speed train to Rome, taking you to Italy’s capital city in under two hours.

On arrival in Rome, you will be met at the station by private transportation and dropped off at your hotel in the city centre.  Check in and the rest of the day is free.

DAY 9 – THE VATICAN AND THE HEART OF ROME

On your first full day in Rome, you will be met by a private guide and join a small group tour of the  Vatican Museums  within the Vatican City; an independent city-state in the centre of Italy’s capital. Your guide will give you unique insight into the collections and masterpieces of the Vatican Museums such as the Raphael Rooms, Belvedere Courtyard, the Galleries of the Candelabra, the Maps and the Tapestries, and then lead you through the famous Sistine Chapel, home to some of Michelangelo’s finest frescos.

The last stop on this morning tour is St Peter’s Basilica, considered by many to be one of the most magnificent churches in the world. After an independent lunch in Rome, your afternoon will be spent on a guided walking tour of the city’s Baroque Town, including visits to the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, the Italian Parliament, the Pantheon and the Piazza’s Navona and Spagna.

After the walking tour, you have the rest of the afternoon to either return to your hotel or continue exploring Rome into the evening.

DAY 10 – ROME

This tour has been designed to combine days of guided sightseeing with leisure time, ensuring that you enjoy the best elements of both a touring holiday and an independent trip. Today has been left free to allow you to set the pace of your itinerary so that you can either relax in one of Italy’s greatest cities or choose your own activities to fill the day.

If you do decide you want to take a day trip, you can take an excursion to Capri or Pompeii for views of the coast, or travel by high-speed train back to Naples and explore this famous area. The nearby Viterbo area also offers wine tasting and vineyard tours, or you can stay in Rome and visit popular spots such as the Colosseum and Roman Forum.

On your final night in Rome, you can choose where to eat dinner, and then stroll back to your hotel through the darkening streets and admire some of the city’s famous monuments as they are lit up.

escorted tour of italy

DAY 11 – EXPERIENCE TRUE TUSCANY

Today you will meet your tour host at your hotel and depart Rome for Florence, travelling on a coach into Tuscany. This journey allows you to admire the famous Tuscan hills from the comfort of your seat as they pass by, spotting hilltop medieval villages and passing through the region’s finest vineyards.

This transfer to Florence includes a stop in Siena, which centuries ago was said to be the only rival to Florence in terms of wealth, power and culture. Today Siena is one of Tuscany’s oldest and most beautiful cities, full of medieval and Renaissance architecture that will fascinate fans of history and design.

Your guide will take you on a walking tour of the city, where you will visit the Piazza del Campo that is used as the venue for the city’s famous annual Palio horse race. From here you will then walk around some of the seventeen city districts that compete in this tournament each year, exploring Siena’s quieter back streets.

In the afternoon you may get that chance to stop off in Monteriggioni if there is time, which is a small and very interesting walled town in the Chianti region. You will arrive in Florence in the early evening, and spend the night in the city.

escorted tour of italy

DAY 12 – MAGNIFICENT FLORENCE: BETWEEN FOOD AND ARTS

Today you will enjoy a guided tour of some of Florence’s best areas, beginning after breakfast by exploring back streets, visiting some of the city’s quieter areas, and experiencing the San Lorenzo market. Fresh local produce arrives here each morning from the countryside, and it’s a great place to sample new flavours and pick up something for lunch.

In the afternoon your guide will take you into the city centre, and you will learn how the ancient statesman Lorenzo de Medici brought writers, artists and architects to Florence in the 15th century, securing its reputation as the birthplace of the Renaissance. Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli are just some of the famous names whose work is now on display in Florence, all of which contribute to its incredible artistic heritage.

Your tour will take you past the Palazzo Vecchio, over the Ponte Vecchio, through the Piazza della Signoria and end with a visit to the Accademia gallery. Here, your tickets will allow you to skip the queues and see Michelangelo’s influential statue of David, as well as other classic artworks.

You will return to your hotel after this full day of sightseeing, and spend another night in Florence.

Cinque Terre Town

DAY 13 – OPTIONAL CINQUE TERRE

Today gives you another chance to decide on your own itinerary for the day, with the option to join a small-group excursion to the coastal region of Cinque Terre. This will take you to a few locations by boat, allowing incredible views of the cliffside villages from the water.

Cinque Terre translates to ‘five lands’, referring to the five small villages and towns that are linked along the cliffs by a railway and popular hiking trails. You can escape from the city crowds you have been a part of the last few days, and enjoy the area’s incredible seafood, lemon-inspired dishes, and wine.

escorted tour of italy

DAY 14 – WELCOME TO VENICE

After your final breakfast in Florence, you will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the city’s train station. Here, you will board another high-speed train, this time to the floating city of Venice for your final three days of the tour.

On arrival in Venice, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in the city. You will have the rest of the day to get your bearings and explore the area you are staying in, before sending your first night in your hotel.

Venice

DAY 15 – ENJOY “LA SERENISSIMA” VENEZIA

After enjoying the morning at your leisure, your guide will meet you in the afternoon for a guided tour of Venice. Most tourists have left the city by the afternoon, making it a brilliant time for a walking tour around the narrow, twisting streets and beautiful squares, churches and towers.

Your guide will not only lead you to some of the main attractions in Venice, but also take you to some of the less-visited areas so that you get a real feel for the city’s authentic atmosphere. The tour will end with a gondola ride; a classic activity for those visiting Venice who want to enjoy admiring the city from the water.

In the evening, you will be treated to a traditional Venetian dinner as your farewell to Italy and this tour.

Alberobello, Ostuni, Polignano, Matera, Sorrento, Amalfi, Ravello, Positano, Pompeii, Rome , Siena, Florence and Venice.

This unforgettable trip takes you on a grand tour of Italy, offering the chance to see some of the country’s finest locations and experience a range of different Italian towns, cities, landscapes and attractions.

Beginning in Apulia, you will travel through the picturesque Val d’Itria countryside filled with vineyards, villages, and fields, and enjoy a specialist wine and cheese tasting session in rural Masseria. Next, explore the World Heritage Site of Matera and visit the famous series of underground, man-made caves that the city’s first inhabitants lived in, followed by a trip to ancient  Pompeii  to see some of the famous ruins and remains that survived the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

After enjoying the hospitality of Sorrento, you will next travel to  Italy’s capital city of Rome  and spend a few days exploring with a guide and independently, giving you the chance to see some of its most popular sights and discover a few hidden gems of your own. From Rome, you will travel to  Tuscany  and visit two of its most popular locations;  Florence  and Siena.

Finally, end your holiday in  Venice ; a unique and romantic city floating in a lagoon at the top of the country. ‘La Serenissima’, as Venice is known, is one of the cultural highlights of the country, and you will be treated to a gondola tour of the winding canals that link the city together as your last memorable experience of this tour.

This is not fully escorted tour, starting in Bari and ending in Venice. You will have private local guides for your days of sightseeing and private transportation between locations. Local assistance will also be on hand 24/7 in each destination in case you need anything else.

THURSDAY : Boarding your overnight flight, you’re off on a journey that will remain etched in your memory forever!

FRIDAY : Benvenuti a Roma ! Your Perillo representative will be at the airport to greet you. We are pleased to offer complimentary transfers from the Rome airport to your hotel at scheduled times.

This afternoon you’ll have some time to relax or better yet, explore the Eternal City. There’s so much to see and do!

Tonight, we’ll meet our tour leader for a brief orientation and welcome drink. After orientation, you’ll be free for the remainder of the evening. Be sure to ask your tour leader for restaurant recommendations – so many wonderful places to eat in this amazing city!

SATURDAY : Rome wasn’t built in a day, and you certainly can’t see it in one—but we’ll try to show you as much as possible in the next few days!

This morning, we travel ten-minutes to another country—Vatican City. With our expert local guide we’ll tour the Vatican Museums, a massive collection of ancient Greek sculptures, medieval tapestries and Renaissance paintings. Our visit culminates in the Sistine Chapel, the room where the Pope is elected.

Next we visit St. Peter’s Basilica, by far the largest church in Christendom. We’ll see Michelangelo’s Pietà, sculpted when he was just 24, as well as Bernini’s seven-story bronze canopy located above the main altar.

Tonight, we’ll recount our explorations with good food and wines fit for an Emperor at a local Roman restaurant!

( Please note that the visit of St. Peter’s Basilica is subject to availability based on the events planned by the Pope. )

SUNDAY : Hail Caesar ! All aboard our chariot for a relaxing, panoramic driving tour of Imperial Rome including the Roman Forum, downtown ancient Rome, the Circus Maximus, and the Great Synagogue, built in the heart of the Jewish quarter.

Then we’ll enter the Colosseum, reliving the brutal entertainment of the gladiators and the lions, refereed by the Emperor himself.

Tonight, we thought you’d enjoy a dinner on your own. Ask your tour guide for a nearby recommendation or venture out and explore the local restaurants in Rome! Be sure to try a “ Supplì ,” a quintessential Roman specialty: Fried ball of rice filled with tomato sauce, meat and melted mozzarella.

*Colosseum entrance subject to ticket availability*

MONDAY : After a delicious breakfast in the hotel, we’re off on the beautiful drive south to Pompeii! On the way, we approach the view of the Bay of Naples, birthplace of Caruso, Sophia Loren, Bel Canto and ‘O Sole Mio.

We travel back to the Pompeii of 79 AD. A city perfectly preserved by the ash that rained down from Mt. Vesuvius. You’ll see the tragic fossils of the people trying to escape with their children and dogs, and streets, homes and stores that are all amazingly intact.

This evening we enjoy a dinner out at a local restaurant.

TUESDAY : This morning, we board our speedy jetfoil to the world’s most enchanting island—Capri. We’ll enjoy a private boat tour around the island (weather permitting). We’ll cruise by the magnificent Faraglioni, Capri’s iconic rock formations which tower above the Mediterranean Sea.

Next, we visit one of the lesser-known but equally beautiful sea caves, the Grotta Bianca. Then we’ll have free time to explore the island on our own, or take advantage of a special optional excursion with our tour leader.

Later this afternoon, we sail back and have some time to relax before heading out to a great Neapolitan restaurant for dinner.

WEDNESDAY : This morning, after a delicious breakfast, we board a train to Florence! We’ll arrive in time for lunch followed by a walking tour of the historical center of this most famous of all Renaissance cities!

We’ll visit the majestic Duomo Complex built in 1296, Giotto’s Bell Tower and the Baptistery with its renowned Gates of Paradise doors.

We follow the medieval streets to the most striking square in Florence, Piazza della Signoria.

“Breathtaking” is the only word to describe one’s first view of Michelangelo’s David. Yes, it’s quite large and detailed. But the real magic is in how Michelangelo transformed a lifeless rock into a man—full of pride, wary of his adversary, yet quietly confident. All with just a hammer and a chisel!

Tonight, we enjoy a Florentine dinner in our hotel with fine wines

*In the event of a train strike or such problems, we will travel to Florence by bus.

THURSDAY : The Grand Canal is just a short train ride away from Florence. Should we go? … SI! ANDIAMO A VENEZIA !

There is no normal life in Venice. Here, everything and everyone floats luxuriously with a sense of freedom, never tormented by traffic or even the sound of a horn.

Your guide will show you all the sights—St. Mark’s Square, the Basilica, and the Bridge of Sighs. Just around the corner from St. Mark’s Square, we’ll enjoy a special Venetian lunch in a town renowned for its seafood specialties.

This evening we return to Florence for dinner on your own. Make sure to try Pappa al Pomodoro, a rustic Tuscan soup made with tomatoes, garlic, onions and of course, Tuscan bread!

FRIDAY : Our last day together will be at our favorite winery! You’ll visit the Tenuta Torciano winery in Tuscany and meet our dear friend, Pierluigi Giachi, the world’s most enchanting sommelier. You’ll learn about the grape, the nose, food pairings and most importantly—which glass to use with each wine! You’ll also get to experience an olive oil and truffle oil tasting…and of course have some fresh bread with it!

This will all be followed by a fabulous lunch and wine tasting. Salute! Enjoy the remainder of the day and evening on your own, perhaps shopping for last minute souvenirs!

SATURDAY : This morning board your flight home, arriving in the USA the same day. Unless, of course, you have chosen to extend your stay! A warm Grazie for traveling with the Perillo family and please return soon.

format_quote Testimonials

I could not imagine coming to Italy and not doing another Perillo Tour. Mirna was an excellent guide.

Mr. & Mrs. J.A.

What can I say about our Vesuvius Tour other than it was amazing. Our tour guide Daniela Senise was exceptional. I had a medical problem on the trip - got on the plane in New York walking - got off the plane in Rome unable to walk. Through Daniela's caring, she arranged for a doctor to see me at the hotel, welcomed me on the parts of the tour I could do and was very honest in telling me which parts of the tour would have been impossible for me to do on the walker and eventually in a wheelchair for the last five days of the trip. She was always helpful, never made me feel like I was an imposition/bother. It is because of her that we can still say we had a marvelous time. She is smart. She is friendly. She is knowledgeable. Everything moved smoothly. Daniela is a pure treasure and Perillo Tours should hold on to her.
