Enjoyable evening tour of Zurich

Certainly recommended, a reasonably priced tour of Zurich with a guide who knows his history of the city and it's darker side. We enjoyed the evening stroll round the old town, very similar to tours around York we have been on previously.

we have joined Dan for the ghost walk last September with a group of about 10 people. Dan is a great entertainer, but in our opinion you could feel that he has done the tour so many times, that it's not that spontaneous anymore. Even jokes are almost like scheduled. We understood that while doing the tour several times per week it's difficult to keep it "loose" But this all doesn't make the tour less interesting, some great stories about houses and locations are being told. Both for tourist and locals this is definitely a great opportunity to see a different side of Zürich.

Very interesting and funny. We had a lot of laugh with Dan as a guide. It is perfect start of the weekend in zurich. Dan has real talent for storytelling and he is well prepared, it is like a good stand-up show.

Dan's charisma is going to show you the eery side of Zurich in a fun way. Brace yourselves, most assured you will enjoy it, but it's better if you know a bit of the city beforehand. And it's even better if you go with friends (so you aren't the only one having nightmares afterwards). I can't believe I haven't heard of this before but it should be a must if you really really want to experience everything that Zurich has to offer (including its ghosts). Go to the bathroom before the tour and with comfortable shoes. You don't want to miss a thing.

  • One Day in Zurich Itinerary: How to See the Best of Zurich in a Day

Aerial view of Zurich, Switzerland

Although Zurich is truly one of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland, due to its size, spending one day in Zurich is the perfect amount of time to experience the major attractions of the city.

Resting in the shadow of the Swiss Alps, Zurich is a treasure trove of historic landmarks, museums, galleries, and restaurants. Given its setting on the shores of the glistening Lake Zurich with the River Limmat flowing through the Old Town, Zurich is a really picturesque destination.

It offers plenty of appeal for urbanites yet the surrounding nature makes Zurich feel all the more spectacular for those who like their cities in a more rural environment.

This one day in Zurich itinerary picks out the most interesting things to see and do and provides a few different options to ensure that whatever the weather is doing, you have a few options to select from. Continue reading to find out how to prepare for your trip and what to do in Zurich for one day.

Useful Info for Visiting Zurich

How to get to zurich.

Zurich Airport, or Flughafen Zurich (ZRH), serves international and domestic flights with direct connections to most major European cities and North American destinations which makes Zurich a fantastic starting point for a Switzerland road trip .

The airport is situated 10 km (6.2 miles) north of the city. You can hop on the S-Bahn train or take the tram (line 10) into the city.

Either way, the journey costs 6.80 CHF (€7) but it’s entirely free with the Zurich Card. If you want to purchase a Zurich Card , it costs 27 CHF (€28) for a 24-hour pass or 53 CHF (€55) for a 72-hour pass, if you are spending longer than one day in Zurich.

The card covers your travel via tram, bus, train, boat, and cableway in the city and surrounding area and grants free or reduced admission to a number of museums. It does not, however, cover the scenic boat cruises mentioned later in this Zurich itinerary.

You can purchase a Zurich Card online, via the Zurich City Guide app. Alternatively, you can buy one in person at the airport or at a ticket machine at a train station in town.

You can also travel to Zurich by train from elsewhere in Switzerland. Zurich Main Station is located super centrally in District 1. As a guideline, the journey from Geneva takes around 2 hours 45 minutes to traverse the 273 km (170 miles).

Zurich Riverwalk

Best time to visit Zurich

There isn’t a bad time to visit Zurich as the city has year-round appeal and it never gets unbearably hot or cold. It really depends on what you want to do while in the city and whether you prefer to spend more time indoors or outside.

This one day Zurich itinerary is designed for any season but note that some attractions, such as boat cruises, do not operate during the winter.

The only months that I would recommend avoiding are July and August as this is when the city is the most crowded and when trying to see Zurich in a day, you’ll risk losing valuable time standing in lines. But, on the other hand, these are the best months for taking a dip in the lake!

Zurich is a joy to explore during the spring, early summer, and autumn months. The temperatures hover between 15-20°C (59-68°F) during these shoulder months and it’s pleasant for walking around. You’ll need some layers for the cooler evenings though.

Winter in Zurich is lovely because the city glows with Christmas markets and yuletide activities. This typically arrives towards the end of November and stays until the New Year celebrations when fireworks erupt over the lake. It rarely snows in Zurich, even during winter, but temperatures can drop to 0°C (32°F). Rain is possible at any time of year so you’ll want to bring something waterproof.

Grossmünster in Zurich, Switzerland

How to get around Zurich

As with most European cities, Zurich benefits from a fantastic public transport system. Actually, it’s slated to be one of the best in the world!

You can use the U-Bahn (metro), S-Bahn, buses, and trams to get around Zurich. For something more alternative, you can ride the Polybahn, a little red funicular railway, which connects the Old Town to the viewing platform at the Polyterrasse.

Zurich is also served by boats and ferries that navigate the Limmat and Zurichsee (Lake Zurich). So if you are wondering what to do in Zurich for one day, you can literally spend it riding all these fun transit systems around if you want to!

Where to stay in Zurich

As you are only spending 24 hours in Zurich, it makes sense to book accommodation as centrally as possible to save some time. I’ve rounded up three of the best places to stay in Zurich to suit all budgets.

If you do want to stay further afield, the perk is the wonderful public transport system I already told you about.

Storchen Zürich

LUXURY – Storchen Zürich

This beautiful hotel is located right in the heart of Zurich and has its own boat pier directly at the Limmat River. Rooms come with classic furnishing with warm colors and modern facilities and each room offers a picturesque view of the Old Town. The hotel also has a beautiful outdoor terrace which is perfect for summertime trips.

Hotel City Zürich Design & Lifestyle

MID-RANGE – Hotel City Zürich Design & Lifestyle

Situated by the famous Bahnhofstrasse, this modern hotel is artistically presented with comfortable and spacious rooms. All rooms have a private bathroom and most include bathtubs with overhead showers.

Hotel Marta

BUDGET – Hotel Marta

This no-frills hotel is clean, functional, and fabulously located in the northern point of the Niederdorf quarter of Old Town. Breakfast is included in the rate and the staff goes out of their way to take care of their guests.

Overview of Your One Day Zurich Itinerary

At a glance, this is how you will spend your 24 hours in Zurich. It’s a fairly full agenda but some of the attractions are optional or either/or so feel free to customize this itinerary as you like!

Morning: Museum Rietburg/Rieterpark, Zurich Lake Cruise OR River Limmat Cruise

Afternoon: Zurich Altstadt (highlights include trying raclette for lunch and visiting Limmatquai, Rathaus, Grossmünster, St Peter’s Church, Predigerkirche, Fraumünster, the Old Botanical Garden, and the Swiss National Museum)

Evening: Uetliberg Viewpoint OR Thermalbad & Spa Zürich OR Urania Sternwarte

Morning of Your One Day in Zurich

Museum rietberg/rieterpark .

Located in the southwest of the city, Museum Rietberg is a collection of artworks and archaeological items from Asia, Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. The archive contains a mix of traditional and contemporary objects and is such an unexpected museum to find in the heart of Zurich.

Housed within a 19th-century mansion, the museum is set within the landscaped Rieterpark. If you are looking for more outdoorsy things to do in Zurich for a day then you can cross the road to visit the neighboring Belvoirpark and work your way over to the waterfront.

Museum Rietberg is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am – 5 pm, and until 8 pm on Wednesday evenings. Admission to the permanent collection is 14 CHF (€14.50) and if you want to also visit the temporary exhibitions, the ticket costs 18 CHF (€18.60).

Access to both Rieterpark and Belvoirpark is free and they are open 24/7.

Zurich Lake/River Limmat Cruise

If you want to get out on the water, then you have a couple of options for touring either the River Limmat or Lake Zurich.

The Lake Zurich Navigation Company schedules daily round trip cruises during the summer season, from early April until late October. If you are spending one day in Zurich, then the short tours that sail down to Thalwil and Erlenbach before returning to the city are the best option.

From Rieterpark, you can walk to Zurich Bürkliplatz in 15 minutes and board a boat there. The cruise takes around 1.5 hours and costs 4.40 CHF (€4.55). You can head straight to the ferry terminal but you might want to check the schedule online once you have your dates. They typically depart every half an hour.

Alternatively, you can take a scenic cruise along the River Limmat as part of your exploration of Zurich Altstadt. A round trip from Zurich Landesmuseum to the Zurichhorn in District 8 takes around 1 hour and costs 4.40 CHF (€4.55). Again, you can check the schedule online to help plan your time.

River Limmat Cruise in Zurich

Afternoon of Your One Day in Zurich Itinerary

The Old Town, Zurich Altstadt, is situated within District 1 and straddles both banks of the River Limmat. The area is defined by its enchanting heritage architecture and friendly ambiance and it’s lovely to dedicate a few hours to wander around it all. As there is so much to see, my one day Zurich itinerary pulls out some of the highlights.

Feast on Raclette

Raclette is one of the national dishes of Switzerland and if you love cheese, then sampling the delicacy for yourself is one of the best things to do in Zurich for a day. You’ll find a number of restaurants in Altstadt which serve it so you can always follow your nose and see what you find.

But if you would rather save time looking, you can head directly to Raclette Factory for the most classic quality and dining experience. The restaurant is located on the right bank of the River Limmat and has a menu that offers the finest local cheese and a selection of potato options.

Raclette Factory Zurich

Notable Churches

There are so many beautiful churches in Zurich Altstadt so if you enjoy visiting these landmarks, you’ll have a field day!

On the left bank, Fraumünster Church features an iconic teal spire, its majestic organ, and its elegant stained glass windows by the renowned artist Marc Chagall. There is an entrance fee of 5 CHF (€5.20) to enter the church but the rest of the churches on this list are free to enter.

Less than 5 minutes away, St Peter’s Church brings together Romanesque and Gothic architecture and its signature is the colossal clock ticking down your 24 hours in Zurich!

Across on the right bank, pretty much directly opposite Fraumünster, you will find the twin-towered Grossmünster. Constructed in the 12th century, this church was the backdrop for the preachings of religious reformer Huldrych Zwingli in the 1500s.

One final church that you can linger on is the Predigerkirche, which means Preacher’s Church. First erected in 1231 in the Romanesque style, the church has been through a couple of renovations and at the time the bell tower was added, it was remarked on for being unusually tall.

Grossmünster in Zurich, Switzerland

This charming street lines the right bank of the river and is worth taking a stroll along to appreciate views across the water and shoot some postcard-worthy photos as a memento from your one day in Zurich.

One notable sight that you will not miss is the Zurich Rathaus or Town Hall. With a direct view over the river, the Rathaus has occupied this spot since the late 17th century when the building was constructed to replace an earlier town hall from the 13th century.

The Rathaus is the seat of both the local council and the cantonal council.

Rathaus (City Hall) in Zurich

Old Botanical Garden

These 19th-century botanical gardens are located in the western point of Zurich Altstadt on the left bank. The park features flowers, bamboos, and edible herbs, vegetables, and fruits and it’s a tranquil spot to recoup your energy while exploring the best of Zurich in a day.

The gardens are open Monday to Friday, between 7 am – 7 pm, and on weekends, between 8 am – 6 pm. The entrance is free.

Zurich Botanical Garden

Swiss National Museum

Located in the northernmost tip of the Aldstadt at the confluence of the Limmat and Sihl rivers, the Swiss National Museum will tell you everything you could want to know about Switzerland’s heritage and culture. They also curate fantastic special exhibitions about interesting topics.

The museum is a huge complex with loads of detail and you can easily spend 2-3 hours devouring the artifacts. For that reason, I recommend this as an option for history buffs or for those seeking things to do in Zurich for a day during winter or inclement weather.

The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am – 5 pm, and until 7 pm on Thursday evenings. Admission is 10 CHF (€10.30).

Swiss National Museum

Evening of Your One Day in Zurich

For your one evening in Zurich, I have selected a couple of options for you to choose from based on what you would prefer to do. If you are spending longer than one day in Zurich, you might want to tackle all three activities!

Uetliberg Viewpoint

For one of the best views across the city, lake, and surrounding Alps, you can visit the lookout at Uetliberg, a mountain that overlooks Zurich. Trains (route S 10) connect Zurich Main Station and Uetliberg in 25 minutes, then it’s a short walk to the summit.

Whatever time of year you visit, the scenery is epic. For the purpose of this one day in Zurich itinerary, I suggest going up to catch the sunset although you could always flip it over and visit early in the morning.

Trains typically start around 6.30 am and run until around 11 pm but you can check the specific train schedule online.

If you are spending longer than one day in Zurich then there are loads of hiking trails waiting for you up here.

Panoramic view of Zurich from Uetliberg Viewpoint

Thermalbad & Spa Zürich

If you aren’t fussed to visit the viewpoint (or went first thing instead) then you might be tempted to indulge in a thermal mineral bath to soothe your aching feet.

Located in the former Hürlimann brewery, the spa has taken inspiration from the casks to create an aquatic wonderland in deep wooden barrels. There are a number of pools to discover and the highlight is the rooftop pool that provides a view across the rooftops of Zurich. While you’re at the spa you can also opt to get a massage treatment if you wish.

Thermalbad & Spa Zurich is located in Enge. The thermal baths are open from Monday to Friday between 8 am – 10 pm and during the weekend between 9 am and 10 pm. It is not possible to book in advance and you might have to wait if the spa is busy. It is, however, recommended to book massages and treatments ahead. Day admission to the thermal baths is 35 CHF (€36.20).

Urania Sternwarte

One final option for things to do in Zurich for a day at night is to enjoy a spot of stargazing. This 50 meters (164 feet) high observatory in Altstadt hosts public astronomy tours on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at 8 pm during winter and 9 pm during summer.

The fee is 20 CHF (€20.65), but you get a 5 CHF (€5.20) discount if you have the Zurich card.

The official language of Zürich is German, but the main spoken language is the local variant of the Alemannic Swiss German dialect Zürich German. Many museums and art galleries can be found in the city, including the Swiss National Museum and the Kunsthaus. Zurich is rich in cultural highlights, it is one of the leading art trading cities in the world with more than 50 museums and over 100 galleries. The Opera House, Tonhalle Orchestra (concert hall orchestra), as well as the Schauspielhaus Zurich (municipal theater), provides a culture of the highest standards.

Monocle’s 2012 “Quality of Life Survey” ranked Zürich first on a list of the top 25 cities in the world “to make a base within”. According to several surveys, Zürich has named the city with the best quality of life in the world as well as the wealthiest city in Europe in terms of GDP per capita.

The city on the River Limmat pulsates all year round. The highlights of Zurich’s event calendar include the Street Parade, the Zurich Festival, open-air concerts and cinemas in summer, the Weltklasse Zurich (track & field meeting) and New Year’s Eve Magic organized by Zurich’s hoteliers.

Here in this article, we will provide all the necessary information related to nightlife features of Zurich, including a comprehensive list of the best destinations. Live performance at Opernhaus Zurich

evening tour zurich

If you are in search of some world-class opera and ballet performances in Zurich, then the Opernhaus Zurich is the perfect place for you. Open since 1891, the Opernhaus Zurich is the main venue for opera and ballet performances, in the city. We heartily recommend watching at least one opera or ballet performance, simply because the performances are so magnificent. You will be amazed at how beautiful the performances are!

Jazz Club Moods im Schiffbau

evening tour zurich

The best venue to enjoy jazz music, in Zurich, is the Jazz Club Moods im Schiffbau. The jazz performances at Moods are really wonderful and as one of the most popular jazz clubs in Zurich, Moods attracts well-known local as well as international names. If you wish for some privacy at Moods, you can become the club’s VIP guest and book a gallery area or a private balcony. While listening to some jazz, you can enjoy some drinks, as suitable to your mood, their cool club bar serves a superb selection of cocktails and liquors as well.

Enjoy drinks at the open-air Rimini Bar

evening tour zurich

One of the best ways to make some new friends is by heading to a bar called the Rimini Bar and mingles with the local people over there. The bar is one of the most awesome and overwhelming open-air bars in Zurich! The atmosphere is very welcoming and friendly, with its massive wooden deck for the visitors to have relaxed conversations with one another. With an immense and panoramic view of the Sihl River, you can sit back and have some drinks at the bar. Since Rimini Bar is an open-air venue, it is only open when the weather is friendly.

Party on at Street Parade

evening tour zurich

Zurich is famous for its Street Parade, the electronic music festival in August which sees a long stretch of decorated trucks – the Love Mobiles – make their way through a dancing crowd of about a million people. If you are looking to carry on the party, the Kaufleuten is a classic venue, and you can hardly go wrong with the Plaza or the Mascotte. A marginally edgier (and younger) crowd can be found at the Hive or the Härterei, and newer venues on Langstrasse like Cafe Gold and Kinski continue to attract attention.

Thermalbad & Spa Zurich

evening tour zurich

When there is a freezing and rainy day in Zurich, must visit at Hürlimann Areal and its Thermalbad & Spa. The view over the city from its rooftop pool is really astonishing and wonderful, this alone is worth the entrance fee. But there is more: you can relax in the huge wooden water-filled tubs of the old brewery in the basement and for an additional sum, enjoy the Irish-Roman spa with its steam baths and shallow pools. The venue gets very crowded on weekends, so arrive early to avoid any hassle. If you are looking for a more intimate spa experience, check out the Stadtbad on Helvetiaplatz with its stylish hammam.

Best Bars in Zurich

There are more than enough options available in Zurich to suit everybody’s needs, with a number of quality cocktail bars and summer beach bars on the lake and river, most Zurich bars usually close around midnight during the week and 02 am at weekends. In the dark alleyways of medieval Zurich, the night watchmen were important guards: they not only called out the hours, but also in particular were on the look-out for fires and shady characters such as drunkards and thieves.

Nowadays, tour participants who accompany the night watchman on his rounds through the city after dark embark on a journey back through time to the Zurich of yesteryear.

The night watchman tells participants all kinds of gruesome stories of harsh sentences, executions, hangmen, and witches, and of plagues and devastating fires. If you’re planning on heading out by yourself, we recommend picking a place that can be reached within an hour from Zurich. This will give you enough time to spend at the destination of your choosing without having to spend too many hours on the train.

However, there are also several awesome guided day trips from Zurich that take you beyond this one-hour mark. These fully organised bus tours bring you to places that would be more stressful or sometimes even impossible to visit by yourself. But we’ll get to those later.

Of course, you can also visit the Alps and spend a day in the mountains if you’re thinking about leaving Zurich for a day. Here are a few of our best suggestions that you can easily do in a day trip from Zurich by train and mountain railway.

Rigi is an easily accessible mountain from Zurich and presents a quintessential Swiss experience. The mountain stands tall between Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz and offers a broad range of activities including wellness, gastronomy and outdoor sports. A unique experience is the cogwheel railway trip from Vitznau, which is Europe's first mountain railway, established in 1871. Once at the summit, the Rigi Kulm, you can enjoy panoramic views over the Swiss plateau towards the Black Forest and lots of surrounding lakes.

Stanserhorn

Visiting Stanserhorn is an unforgettable experience. With its open-air cable car, the Stanserhorn Cabrio, you reach the mountain peak and are greeted by an impressive view of the surrounding landscapes. Stanserhorn Cabrio is the world's first double-deck open-top cable car, allowing you to experience the stunning views in a truly immersive way. Aside from the cable car ride, the Stanserhorn also offers opportunities for hiking, bird watching and dining at the Rondorama revolving restaurant. Additionally, the marmot park near the summit makes for a fun family experience.

Mount Pilatus offers an exceptional experience right from the journey to the peak, which can be via a steep cogwheel railway, the world's steepest, or a breathtaking gondola ride from Kriens. Once at the summit, the 360-degree views overlooking Lake Lucerne and the Swiss Alps are truly spectacular. Moreover, Mount Pilatus is rich in legends and folklore with stories of dragons and ghosts adding an exciting aura to the place. Summer or winter, Pilatus offers a variety of activities including hiking, mountain climbing, tobogganing and even concerts.

Zugerberg is the local mountain of Zug and offers stunning views over Lake Zug and the surrounding Alps. Just a short distance from Zurich, it's a great location for families due to its numerous trails, adventure playgrounds and picnic spots. The Zugerbergbahn funicular, with its panorama cabins, can take you up to the mountain in less than ten minutes. Also, the mountain is home to various plants and animals, making it a natural paradise for flora and fauna enthusiasts.

Mount Titlis is a unique experience for anyone visiting Switzerland. Located in Central Switzerland, it's the only place in the region where you can enjoy snow and ice all year round, thanks to its glacier park at over 3000 metres above sea level. The highlight is the Titlis Rotair, the world's first revolving gondola, which offers panoramic views of the snowy peaks, deep crevasses, and pristine white glaciers. For adventure seekers, there's the Titlis Cliff Walk, Europe's highest suspension bridge.

Bürgenstock

Bürgenstock, perched above Lake Lucerne in Switzerland, is an exquisite mountain that provides a unique blend of natural beauty and luxury experiences. This mountain peak is renowned for its world-class Bürgenstock Resort, which offers exceptional views, wellness facilities, and gourmet dining options. For nature lovers, the Bürgenstock Felsenweg and the Hammetschwand Lift, Europe's highest outdoor elevator, provide breathtaking views of the Swiss Alps and the surrounding lake.

Flumserberg

Flumserberg is a beautiful destination throughout the year. As the largest winter sports region in Eastern Switzerland, it offers a wide range of slopes for skiing and snowboarding. In summer, it transforms into a hiking and biking paradise, with well-marked trails and routes suitable for all levels. The 8-seater gondola Prodalp-Express can take visitors up to the mountain offering stunning views of the Churfirsten mountain range and the Walensee. Rhine Falls

The Rhine Falls, which are located next to Schaffhausen, are Europe's largest waterfall and a thrilling spectacle of nature. Its thunderous roar and misty sprays can be best experienced from the various viewing platforms or a boat ride that takes you close to the roaring waters. Not only is the falls itself a sight to behold, but the surrounding scenic landscapes make it a perfect day trip from Zurich. And they can easily be combined with a visit to the beautiful town of Schaffhausen.

Take a leisurely boat ride or enjoy the many hiking trails around the lake, offering majestic views of the surrounding mountains. If you buy a day pass for Lake Lucerne, you can jump on any boat you like and explore the area.

Lake Zurich

Since you’re already in Zurich, you might as well spend a day on and by its very own lake, right? You can spend a day exploring the lake on one of the many cruise boats or simply relax at the lively lake promenade, known for its cafés, restaurants, and vibrant art scene. The lake also offers several recreational activities like swimming, sailing, and stand-up paddleboarding in the summer. Moreover, several parks and gardens along the shore provide excellent picnic spots, allowing visitors to unwind amidst nature, right in the city's heart. Our favourite town to visit in combination with a boat ride on Lake Zurich is Rapperswil.

A hidden gem in the heart of Switzerland, Lake Zug is renowned for its tranquil beauty. The old town of Zug, with its quaint narrow streets and historical buildings, is a charming place to explore. With cycling routes, water sports, and fishing opportunities, Lake Zug offers a peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Sailing down the River Rhine from Schaffhausen to Stein am Rhein offers a glimpse into the Swiss countryside's charming beauty. 2024 Zurich Classic leaderboard, scores: Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry among leaders after Round 1

Mcilroy and lowry headline a crowded leaderboard as the competition moves to foursomes for friday.

rory-mcilroy-shane-lowry-round-1-2024-zurich-classic-g.jpg

There aren't many firsts left for Rory McIlroy to achieve in his PGA Tour career, but he checked one off the list Thursday at TPC Louisiana. Making his debut appearance in the Zurich Classic, the 34-year-old looked like the seasoned veteran he is alongside Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry. The two fired an 11-under 61 in the four-ball format amid the windy afternoon conditions to sit with the teams of Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard, Aaron Rai and David Lipsky and Ben Kohles and Patton Kizzire atop the leaderboard after Round 1.

While this week marks McIlroy's first attempt at claiming the PGA Tour's annual team event, it also represents his 11th start of the year as he continues to play through some relative early season struggles. McIlroy had no issues in the first round as he drove the ball beautifully, struck towering iron shots and picked apart the par-72 layout in unison with Lowry.

"You know that you sort of need to get off to a good start, and thankfully we did," McIlroy said. "We were 4 under through 4, which was really nice to see, and from there you've got some momentum and you're just trying to keep it going. But for the most part today, we kept both balls in play. We were having two looks basically on every hole at birdie, and that's the way you need to play better ball. Everyone thinks it's maybe a bit more gung ho than that, but as long as you have two balls in play off the tee, two balls on the green, I think you're always going to do pretty well in this format."

The two began their days with four birdies out the gate and tacked on a couple more to turn in 6-under 30. A birdie on No. 10 was followed with a disappointing par on the par-5 11th, but that did nothing to dampen their spirits. McIlroy struck his best iron of the day into the 12th when he feathered an 8 iron against the wind and to tap-in distance.

Lowry picked him up on the very next hole with a birdie of his own to get the team to 9 under and added another on the difficult par-3 14th to get to double digits under par. With four holes remaining, the two appeared likely to overtake the clubhouse lead, but a couple middling pars to go along with one last birdie on the par-5 18th meant there will be four teams sleeping on the lead tonight before the competition transitions to foursomes on Friday.

Let's take a look around the rest of the leaderboard after the first round in Louisiana.

The leaders

T1. Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry, David Lipsky/Aaron Rai, Ryan Brehm/Mark Hubbard, Ben Kohles/Patton Kizzire (-11)

Outside McIlroy and Lowry, the top of the leaderboard is surprising, to say the least. Hubbard has notched a couple top 20s, a top five and has yet to miss a cut this season while Rai has been solid, but the rest of the lot haven't seen the weekend with much consistency. Hubbard's teammate, Brehm, has seven missed cuts in 11 starts. Rai's teammate, Lipsky, has missed eight cuts in 11 starts and is without a top 40. Kizzire has six missed cuts and a withdrawal in nine starts, and Kohles has six missed cuts and a withdrawal in 11 starts. Four-ball can hide deficiencies, but the same cannot be said for foursomes, which will be played Friday and Sunday.

"Just like usual, we ham-and-egged it," Hubbard said. "I don't think either of us were feeling amazing about our games coming into the day, but we just feed off each other really well. We relax each other out there, and best ball is just a fun format. I didn't putt great last week, but he had a lot of holes where he snuggled it up there nice and close for par and it really freed me up. You just kind of get confidence that way, and I think even you watching me make some putts gave you confidence and you poured them in at the end."

Other contenders

T5. Davis Thompson/Andrew Novak, Thomas Detry/Robert MacIntyre, Cameron Champ/MJ Daffue (-10) T8. Sam Stevens/Paul Barjon, Garrick Higgo/Ryan Fox, Luke List/Henrik Norlander, Corey Conners/Taylor Pendrith, Zac Blair/Patrick Fishburn, Marc Meissner/Austin Smotherman, Callium Tarren/David Skinns, Keith Mitchell/Joel Dahmen (-9)

Detry and MacIntyre got off to a dream start by playing their first four holes in 4 under. After hitting a lull, the two turned it on and carded six back-nine birdies to shoot 10-under 62. MacIntyre has the team experience from this past fall's Ryder Cup, while Detry has been enjoying a very solid 2024 campaign. The staying power of all these teams on this leaderboard is interesting given the volatility of foursomes, but the two Europeans should be up to the task.

I think it's about leaving each other to it," MacIntyre said regarding Friday's strategy. "We're both good players, both know what we're doing with the golf ball. It's just trusting each other. If I hit a good shot, you hit a good shot. If you hit a bad shot, don't say sorry, you're not meaning to do it. You just keep walking forward and keep trying to hit good shots and committing to them and see where we end up. Can't really do anything about it. It's difficult because you might not hit a 5-foot putt until the 17th hole. It's completely different. All you can do is try your best."

2024 Zurich Classic updated odds, picks

Odds via Sportsline consensus

  • Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry: 13/5
  • Xander Schauffele/Patrick Cantlay: 10-1
  • Aaron Rai/David Lipsky: 15-1
  • Thomas Detry/Robert MacIntyre: 16-1
  • Andrew Novak/David Thompson: 16-1
  • Nick Taylor/Adam Hadwin: 18-1
  • Corey Conners/Taylor Pendrith: 18-1
  • Joel Dahmen/Keith Mitchell: 20-1

Let's roll with the 2022 champion at 10-1. Schauffele and Cantlay burned a ton of edges on Thursday but kept themselves in it with a late flurry of birdies. They now transition to foursomes for two of the next three days where they were dominant a year ago. In 2023, the two fired a 9-under 63 in Round 2 and a 6-under 66 in Round 4 in this format. If they card something similar in the mid 60s tomorrow, they should be in business heading into the weekend.

One Day In Zurich Travel Guide For A Zurich City Break

Luxurious financial capital of switzerland with a cultural flare.

Z urich is a beautiful city that offers plenty of attractions and activities for solo travelers. It is a city filled with art, history, the amazing shopping, as well as close to nature. Everyone can find something to suit their taste in this Swiss metropolis. Here are some ideas on how to spend 24 hours in Zurich as a solo traveler.

The city has long been known as the financial capital of Europe, but it also has rich history since the Roman times. Zurich, like Geneva Switzerland, is two of the most expensive cities in the world. While Zurich may not be known as a cultural city with a decent nightlife scene, it actually is undercover really cool. It shouldn’t be missed even if you only have 24 hours to spare.

One way to do this is to make this a one-night stopover on your trip. Arrive early, take a bus or free walking tour in the morning. Keep your schedule flexible, but you may want to make reservations for two hot items on the visit, namely a visit to the Lindt Chocolate Factory or a great food tour with some Swiss Fondue as well as some other foodie hot spots. Below are some suggestions for all budgets visiting Zurich for 24 hours.A day or two in Zurich can give you a great introduction to the German speaking area of Switzerland.

A Brief History of Zurich

Zurich dates back to 15 BC and was founded by the Romans. It was part of a route that permitted trade to travel over the Alps. While we know it has Zurich, the Romans called it Turicum. If you tour the city some ruins remain under parts of the city. The city prospered in the 11th and 12th centuries, helped by the Fraumunster, which as a convent attracted many rich European princesses.

In 1351, Zurich joined the Swiss Federation and during the 14th and 15th centuries, its territory was exclusively established for trade and money lending. Until the end of the Old Zurich War (1436-1450), it swayed between remaining with the Swiss Federation and Austria. Switzerland became an independent country in 1815, with its 1848 constitution not permitting them to enter any wars. Zurich remains the country’s largest city, with the largest airport in the country (with fantastic shopping), and its financial capital.

Zurich Itinerary For One Day In Zurich

The city is well-located in Central Switzerland and they say, is the heart of Europe with its beautiful city. Notably, you can get to Zurich by car, bus, train, or airplane with many airlines offering services. I arrived by plane to allow both visiting times that day, with a night stay, to allow a full day to make a 24-hour trip, although some may want to add a day depending on your interests.

Next, I looked into my top choices to visit in case they required a reservation. Lindt Chocolate is so popular it was sold out for a few days, so make sure you make reservations if you are a chocolate lover like me! (Luckily I did make it on a tour to get my supply of chocolates for my trip.) Also, it may depend on your budget, but various things are free like walking through the old town or around the lake, It also ma

How to Get to Zurich Switzerland and “Where is Zurich”?

Zurich is in Central Europe and a hub for many modes of transportation, making it a great and easy place to visit.

  • Main Zurich Train Station: You may find yourself coming to Zurich Hauptbahnhof (also called Zurich HB); it is the largest train station in Switzerland. It is about 6 miles from the airport in Zurich. Most local trains come through this station. I chose to buy a 24-hour transportation card called the Zurich Card City Pass. Notably, it can be purchased for a 24 or 72-hour timeframe and entitles you to travel on an unlimited 2nd class basis on any public transportation. You can buy it via the Zurich City Guide app or at the station. The price is reasonable and it does cover you on the river/boat, public transportation on the lake, as well as the funiculars like the Polybahn. The Polybahn connects the central square with the Polyterrasse via its historic red funicular originally built in 1889. It is only a short ride of a few minutes but is free and you can get the best views of Zurich. Check online for train hours since it is closed on holidays and Sundays.
  • Zurich Airport (ZRH) is the major international airport in Switzerland and home to Swiss International Airlines. This is how I made it to Zurich, I also loved the airport with all its upscale stores and some great places to eat. The airport is a short 15-minute train ride from the City Centre. Notably, the city is pretty compact, especially the historic old town, so it is easy to see,

Best Place To Stay In Zurich For All Budgets

I arrived in Zurich and planned to stay overnight so I can see more of this historic city. Being one of the most expensive cities in Europe, I am showing a few options below, but there are also some large chains here.

  • FIVE Zurich Hotel – Luxury city resort @fivezurich

www.zurich.fivehotelsandresorts.com

Besides these options, there are the hotels including Marriott, Hilton, etc, as well as AirBnB, VRBO, etc.

Things to Do in Zurich Switzerland

Although it is known as an expensive city, there are various things to do in Zurich for all budget levels.

  • Swiss Food Tour: This was a fantastic food tour and this company offers lunchtime and evening tours. If you plan to take a tour, I would make a reservation, since some do sell out.  www.swissfoodtours.com  If you want to experience an elevated foodie experience there are two options a private food tour like I took or an option for those looking to experience the food scene on a small group tour. My guide took me to places I would never have found on my own and also shared a range of both local cuisine and fun cocktail spots. The private tours can be catered to your interests and had a few special surprises. However, you will have to subscribe to my Youtube channel so you don’t miss the Swiss travel adventures.
  • Archeological Windows Zurich- If you want to satisfy your inner Indiana Jones, check out the Archeological windows where you can get a key from the city in order to see the ancient roman ruins underground. I learned about this and got to try it out thanks to my amazing tour guide at Swiss Food Tours on the private tour.

  • Lindt Home of Chocolate Tour: This self-guided tour takes about 2 hours. It was awesome, but I almost missed it so make sure you reserve in advance. I particularly loved the all-you-can-drink chocolate, learning about the history of chocolate in Switzerland, as well as getting to take home plenty of samples. They also have the world’s largest retail Lindt store. This is a must if you are a chocolate lover! If you go on the self guided tour it is about $16 USD plus the cost of taking public transit. However, there is also a sweet small group tour that includes a tour, boat trip on Lake Zurich, and transportation if you don’t feel like going solo.

Explore the History, Culture Art of Zurich, Switzerland

  • Walking Tours: There are both free tours (Free Walking Tours Zurich) and paid tours. It’s a great way to learn more about the area, especially the history and culture of the city. Also, this is the perfect activity if you are solo traveling to meet other travelers.  www.freewalk.ch
  • What is Dada? It is an art form that formed during the First world war, and its main purpose was to challenge social norms of society and make art that would shock, confuse or outrage people. Dadaism’s main purpose was to challenge the social norms of society, and purposefully make art that would shock, confuse, or outrage people. Here you can explore the largest collection of DADA art in the world.

Explore Old Town Zurich

  • Zurich’s Old Town known as Altstadt: Stroll the streets of historic Zurich and its lovely buildings, stores, and restaurants. It is along both sides of the Limmat River and it’s free to stroll the area. This area encompasses everything built in Zurich before 1893.
  • Roman Ruins: In, under, and around Zurich are some old Roman ruins since it was once inhabited by the Romans. There is one free site called the Archeological Window in the Lindenhof cellar. While it is free through the Town Hall, you need to leave a credit card as a deposit so they get back the key to it. There are also other locations like the opera house. It just depends on your time and level of interest.
  • River Transport or Boat at Lake Zurich: If you have a Zurich Card pass, you can use public transport on the river or the lake. Zurich’s Old town hugs the Limmet river on both sides, and is something to witness by water. Luckily it is included in your day pass for public transit!  www.zuerich.com

More Things To Do In One Day In Zurich

  • Ride on the Polybahn (Funclaire): For a great view of the city, go up the furnclair. It goes up to have a great view of the city. It is located near the universities and you can have a drink or food up there, or make your own picnic..  www.polybarn.ch
  • Swiss National Museum: This unique building was constructed in 1898 similar to a French Renaissance chateau. Check opening hours, but is generally open from 10 am-5 pm Tuesday through Sunday, although it is open until 7 pm on Thursday. It costs ten Swiss francs. Although it’s free for kids under 16 and Zurich Card holders.  www.landesmuseum.ch
  • Zurich Opera House: The opera house is a lovely building, housing the Zurich Opera since 1891 and It is also home to the Zurich Ballet. So you may enjoy a performance or just see this grand building.  www.opernhaus.c om
  • Retail Therapy – walk the Bahnhofstrasse: This is the most exclusive avenue for luxury shopping. Stroll the avenue.

The Four Churches of Zurich Old Town

  • Grossmunster Church: This twin-tower romanesque protestant church is an icon in the city. It is free to go in but there is a cost to climb the tower,
  • Fraumunster Church: Another iconic church with a copper-topped spire. The church does have a crypt museum and stained glass by Marc Chagall.
  • St.Peter’s Church: This protestant church is one of the four main churches in the Old Town area of Zurich, This church was consecrated in 1706, the bells date back to the 1880s, and the church was restored in the 1970s. Oddly the church steeple is owned by Zurich, while the rest is owned by the parish. The church’s clock is very large, having the largest face in all of Europe.
  • Predigerkirche Church: Explore the 4th oldest church in Zurich’s Old Town. Predigerkirche is known for it’s high steeple and being the highest edifice in Zurich.

My advice is to plan out your route saving the locations on Google Maps so you maximize the use of your time.

Food in Zurich, Switzerland – Restaurants, Cafes, and Cheap Eats In Zurich

Given I had a fantastic food tour that takes 3-4 hours of your day. I decided to eat some smaller meals in cafes too. The Swiss Food Tour I mentioned above was superb. There are also so many restaurants and cafes to try, including many with Michelin stars. You can’t forget to try the Cheese Fondue and Rosti (fried potato pancake), Here are some suggestions of places to try:

  • Cafe & Conditorei 1842: This cafe offers great homemade chocolate and pastries, and is a cozy baroque setting. There is also a terrace depending on the weather, (Hint: I had the best hot chocolate here, it’s a bit more but I enjoyed it. www.cafe1842.ch Do yourself a favor and get the hot chocolate here!
  • Raphael’s: Raphael’s has great handmade chocolates, coffee, and ice cream. So many great options.  www.raphaels1989.com  I am a coffee fanatic, so I loved recharging my energy with a great latte here.
  • Le Dezeley for Fondue! I was lucky to find this place on the Swiss food tour and this place rivaled the fondue spot I found in Geneva.
  • Best View and cocktails (or mocktails): Jules Verne Panorama Bar is great for creative cocktails or cocktails and has the best view of the city all year round. It is located in an old observatory, which makes the experience extra special.
  • Best Bakery: Bäckerei Vohdin is the oldest bakery in Zurich selling traditional sweets and baked goods. It is cash only. I was lucky to try it thanks to the kindness of a stranger who bought me two sweets to try before I left on the plane. It is also really close to Old Town Otter Hostel so perfect for budget-friendly breakfast or lunch!

Recommendation

Zurich Switzerland is a culturally rich city, and not just the banking capital of Switzerland. Many tourists skip Zurich to see other picturesque Swiss towns or head to the Swiss Alps, but it is definitely worth at least 24 hours. Being one of the major hubs in Europe, it is very easy to reach and explore in a one or two-day stopover. Zurich maybe expensive, but there are still things to do in a day in Zurich for all budgets as well as solo travelers. While planning your trip, remember you may want to make reservations ahead of time, especially for the Lindt Chocolate Museum and food tours.

If you are visiting for a short amount of time just use your card because Switzerland uses a different currency from the rest of Europe. Switzerland uses the Swiss franc.

In conclusion, there are many things to enjoy in Zurich from food and nightlife to cultural experiences and museums. It may be one of the most expensive cities in Europe, but there are plenty of things to do in Zurich for all budgets and it is a place you should not skip if it is close to your other European adventures.

Fun Zurich Fact

There are over 1,200 fountains in Zurich. Bring a reusable water bottle because the water is drinkable.

Also, there are four official languages in Switzerland including Swiss German, French, and Italian, and about 60,000 people speak Romansch. Zurich is located in the Swiss German section of Switzerland so be sure to brush up on a few phrases although most people speak English in the city center.

What would you not miss in Zurich if you only had 24 hours? Save this for later to help plan your trip!
