Island tour mallorca with soller and la calobra, boat trip to cala figuera from cala dor, hot air balloon ride in mallorca, mallorca coasteering experience, aqualand arenal bus+ticket, buggy tour mallorca, starfish boat: dolphin watching with boat and swimming, alcudia market and formentor excursion with bus and boat, marineland mallorca bus + ticket, horse riding in mallorca with bbq and show, off road jeep excursion in mallorca, what to do in cala d'or.

Cala Dor is one of the main tourist centers in the east part of Mallorca, located in the municipality of Santanyi, with about 3,500 inhabitants. Its origin is in 1932 when the marina of Cala Llonga was built, being one of the first yacht clubs in Spain. Cala Dor is based on tourism, so it offers an important tourist infrastructure, with hotels, beaches, bars .... From Cala Dor there are many things to do and places to visit and endless organized excursions to different tourist attractions, plus boat trips in Mallorca .

Spend a day at the Beach: Cala Gran or Cala Esmeralda

Cala Dor is a sun, sea and sand beach destination and therefore one of the most important highlights will be to enjoy some of its beaches. On this stretch of five kilometers of coastline you will find many coves, such as Cala Sa Nau, Cala Mitjana (small and difficult to access), Cala Serena, Cala Gran or Cala Esmeralda. Cala Gran is a beach of fine sand and rock, bathed in crystal clear waters and surrounded by small cliffs and pines. Cala Esmeralda receives its name "Emerald" from the blue-green hue that the sea acquires when it comes into contact with the sun's rays. It is a small cove of sand and rocks, nestled between rocks. It is protected from the winds, with moderate waves, its crystal clear waters invite you to swim. On both of these beaches you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas and you you will find beach bars too. Take your snorkel mask and when you go for a swim in these beautiful waters you can do some snorkelling too.

A walk around Cala Dor

We can take a walk around Cala Dor and visit the marina, whose site was originally an old boat shelter and where the marina was built in 1970, which has numerous nautical services, a shopping area and numerous restaurants. While we walk we can enjoy the typical architecture of white houses with low height and flat roof of this resort, which in a way resembles the style in Ibiza.

In Cala Dor there are hardly any monuments of interest, the most remarkable is the Forti, a fortress built in 1730 during the War of Succession to protect the bay and rebuilt in 1793, from where excellent views can be seen.

Visit the weekly market

Every Sunday from 6pm to 11pm, at the Costa Square, there is a night market held during the summer, for those who want to do some shopping. This is a fantastic place to pick up gift and souvenirs for people back home or for yourself, as there are many stalls with handmade jewellery, crafts, pottery and many other artisan items. It being a night market, there is a great atmosphere of strolling and relax, and it is very nice to have a drink or an ice cream in one of the bars or restaurants in the square as you enjoy the market vibes.

Activities near Cala dor

It's true that there are not many activities to do on Cala Dor other than the usual beach, bars and souvenir shops, but there are some things to do even if you don't want to leave the area. For example you can go for a massage at Quincho Messages - well, you deserve to relax on your holidays after all. You can take a ride on the mini train. This is a tractor-pulled carriage that will take you sightseeing around the resort and which you can use to get from place to place within the resort too, especially as now you can buy a day-pass for a flat rate. Discover Cala Dor's nightlife at the clubs and bars, such as Decades or Bongos. Or if you are feeling adventurous, give scuba diving a try. There are several reputable dive centres in Cala Dor and they will take you on 3-4 hour tours that will help you fall in love with a world you never knew existed.

Visit the town of Felanitx

Among the nearby towns, we have villages like Felanitx, Santanyi (visit that we can combine with its market and Es Trenc beach), Ses Salines or Colonia de Sant Jordi, from where the boat trip to the neighboring island of Cabrera takes place. This boat trip to Cabrera is one of the most popular excursions we have on the web.

Near Felanitx we find the Puig de San Salvador with its monastery, from where we have fantastic views of the island. Another recommended visit is the Castle of Santueri nearby.

The Mondrago nature Parc

The natural park of Mondrago, where there are four self-guided routes to tour the area and finish with a swim from one of its stunning beaches is also a must-visit when staying in this area of Mallorca. Walkers will enjoy trekking along the coast, showing the wilderness of this area of the island. This is one of the most beautiful natural areas in Mallorca and the visitor centre offers lots of information about flora, fauna and in particular about the migratory birds that visit the park annually. All the trails are perfectly marked, and are easy to follow. This constitutes a great day out in Mallorca.

Go for a nice meal at the Marina de Cala Dor

Stroll down Cala Dor's marina and you will see how the other half really live: the yachts are to die for. The area is beautiful with cocktails bars, chill out bars, white bars and a mixture of trendy restaurants and traditional restaurants. There is a relaxed vibe perfectly suited to the holiday mood. Stroll through the harbour and see which restaurants take your fancy. You are guaranteed a great meal of fresh fish, seasonal veg and excellent wine. There is lots of choice but you won't regret ordering the catch of the day. This area is ideal for couples, with such a romantic vibe, but it is also perfectly suited to families looking for a great evening out or just for an ice cream.

Explore Secluded Beaches: Es Forti and Cala des Pou

If you've already exhausted Cala Dor's five coves and fancy checking out the beaches a little further afield, you won't be disappointed when you discover Es Forti and Cala des Pou, two small coves around 2km outside Cala Dor. You will find white sand, big palm trees and crystal clear waters. Above all, you'll find peace and quiet. Despite their proximity to Cala Dor, the small coves of Es Forti and Cala des Pou are off the beaten track and are the perfect places to sunbathe or snorkel with tranquility.

Book an excursion to explore the island

Cala Dor is located rather far from different places of interest, but there are many options to plan a day that will take you to visit the main places of interest in Mallorca. There is a wide range of excursions and tours, to visit and see some of the most touristic sites in Mallorca, such as water parks, the Caves of Drach, Palma, the north of Mallorca with Formentor and Alcudia ... At the top of the page you will find all the activities with the respective information and the different types of excursions.

12 Things to Do in and around Cala d'Or

Cala d’Or in Mallorca is a great destination for a Summer holiday. So check out my list of top 12 things to do in and around Cala d’Or.

Cala d’Or provides the ultimate relaxing holiday. Packed full of hotels, apartments and beautiful low-rise white washed. villas, many visitors to Cala d’Or are happy to while away the days lying beside the hotel swimming pool.

However, for those keen to break out and explore the area, here is a selection of 12 things to do in and around Cala d’Or to help you get the most out of your holiday.

Table of Contents

1. book a boat trip in cala d’or.

All around Cala d’Or are opportunities to book boat trips. This is by far the best way to see this area of Mallorca.

My advice is to head to Cala d’Or Marina where you will find numerous opportunities to book a charter or even a shared charter.

I can recommend going aboard the Capalina shared charter in Cala d’Or. We experienced a 2.5 hour shared charter in July 2022 and you can see our amazing experience in this video playing on this page.

It really is fantastic value for money if you do not want to charter an entire boat yourself.

In 2022, the cost to join the Capalina shared charter is just 99€ per person, and everything is included.

This means lunch, drinks, and the use of the snorkelling, paddleboard, and bodyboard equipment on the boat. There are life jackets if needed and pool noodles too.

You only need to take your swimwear and beach towel.

There is an option to charter the entire boat for your party which will cost 1,000€ for a party of 10.

There are other boat trips that can be booked in Cala d’Or. Just take a walk around Cala d’Or Marina and explore your options.

2. Watersports in Cala d’Or Marina

There are many more watersports activities to enjoy from Cala d’Or Marina.

You can join a fishing boat charter with the Sea Riders, or even join a jet ski tour.

The cost of a jet ski tour is 99€ for half an hour jet tour from Cala d’Or Marina and you can book it here:

The tour includes a tour guide, fuel, and insurance. What’s more, a jet ski license is not required.

3. Visit the Cala Mondrago and Playa S’Amarador Natural Park

One of the most beautiful coves and beaches in Mallorca is in the Cala Mondrago and Playa S’Amarado Natural Park.

The two beaches link together by an adjoining path which also offers stunning views of the turquoise waters.

This area does get extremely busy during the Summer months.

If you are visiting with a party, then there is a lovely shaded picnic area from Cala Mondrago.

There are also a couple of restaurants on the beach and on the main road leading into Cala Mondrago.

Take the walkway around to Playa S’Amarador. From here there are various points you can jump off the rocks into the water (be careful!), snorkel and swim.

You’ll see many superyachts moored here too.

There are beach chringuitos (beach bars) where you can get refreshments and toilets too.

There is also a car park a short walk from both Cala Mondrago and Playa S’Amarador.

Playa S'Amarador Mallorca

My tip is to arrive early in the Summer to ensure you can get a parking spot.

You can also get the 521 TIB bus from Cala d’Or to Cala Mondrago.

If you want to see how to take TIB bus in Mallorca, you can read about it here.

4. Dolphin Watching in Cala d’Or

A must-do activity in Cala d’Or is to see the dolphins. You will see the Starfish glass bottom catamarans cruising the calas picking up passengers several times a day.

The catamaran follows a route along the coast so this is a great way to see the other calas (or coves).

The boat then heads out into the water towards the fishing boats where the dolphins will be waiting.

It’s almost guaranteed that you will see the dolphins. Besides, where there is food, there are dolphins.

You can read more about dolphin watching in Cala d’Or here .

The cost of this excursion is around 50€ for an adult and 30€ per child.

It includes a stop-off at Cala Mondrago for a snorkel and swim, so essentially this is two days out for the price of one!

5. Explore the coves in Cala d’Or

Cala d’Or as a resort is quite spread out and covers a large area.

So if you so wish you can explore the many calas on foot.

From Cala Gran beach, you can easily walk to Cala Petita, as well as down to the Marina.

From there you can also walk to Caló des Pou and over to Cala Egos.

Going in the other direction from Cala Gran beach, you will arrive at Cala Esmeralda and then Cala Ferrera and onto Cala Serena.

Don’t forget I have videos showing exactly what these Calas are like on my Youtube channel and you can watch them here:

Cala d’Or in Autumn

Cala d’Or in Spring:

6. Visit the Night Markets in Cala d’Or

During the Summer months, you will find a couple of night markets in Cala d’Or.

The most popular is the night market in Cala d’Or centre around Burger King in Plaza Toni Costa .

Here you will find some great holiday souvenirs including clothes, jewellery and arts and crafts.

The market runs from around 18:30 until 23:00.

There is also a night market in Cala Egos centre on a Thursday evening also running from 18:30 until 23:00 where you will also find similar products.

I would be really keen to see photos from either of these Cala d’Or markets. So please go and post your experience over on the Mallorca under the Sun Facebook group here.

7. Golfing in Cala d’Or

Golfing enthusiasts will enjoy some of the best golfing on the island at the Vall d’Or golf club.

This 18-hole golf course is different to many others in that it is elevated with amazing coastal views.

With all the facilities expected from a high-end golf club, visitors can also enjoy a meal at the Máxime restaurant.

8. Horse riding in Cala d’Or

For those looking to get out and explore the Cala d’Or countryside on horseback, then there are some great horse riding excursions to enjoy.

Rancho Jaume is the go-to riding stables in Cala d’Or offering tours of the calas, coves and countryside.

Of course, you will not see horse tours taking place during peak season, but this is a great professional centre to try for an alternative activity, whatever your horseriding level.

9. Nightlife in Cala d’Or

The nightlife in Cala d’Or is not as lively as you would find on the South West of the island in resorts such as Magaluf or El Arenal, but the nightlife here is fun all the same.

The main areas to enjoy include the bars and restaurants along Cala d’Or Marina, and also in Cala d’Or Centre.

Visitors looking for a place to dance into the early hours of the morning should head to Club Tiempo which opens at 22:00.

Located on Carrer Toni Costa 33, in Cala d’Or, you can see where this and many of the other bars are located in Cala d’Or centre.

10. Visit Es Forti in Cala d’Or

Cala d’Or lacks the historical monuments that you would find in Palma.

Therefore I would recommend if you are looking to uncover some history and architecture in Cala d’Or, my recommendation is to visit Es Forti .

Built as a military base in1793, Es Forti is also a site of Cultural Interest here in Mallorca.

You can get views of Es Forti from Cala Petita , or you may wish to walk there from Cala d’Or marina.

Es Forti Cala d'Or Mallorca

11. Visit the Caves of Drach or Caves of Hams

For one of the top 12 things to do in and around Cala d’Or, jump on the local bus to Porto Cristo to visit the Caves of Drach and the Caves of Hams.

This is a great excursion to make if you’ve had too much sun and your skin is screaming for a break.

Head underground at either of these two attractions to see incredible rock formations.

And then enjoy a walk through Porto Cristo itself.

You can book tours from Cala d’Or here to the Caves of Drach and the Hams Caves:

Alternatively, take the 428 TIB bus to Porto Cristo at the bus stop at the top of Cala d’Or town centre.

You can see my experience of the caves of Hams in this video here:

12. Visit Portopetro from Cala d’Or

A visit to Cala d’Or needn’t be all about the beautiful beaches and coves.

Just a 10-minute bus journey on the 521 TIB bus will take you to the heart of Portopetro, where you can experience a real working fishing village.

Come here to enjoy an evening meal, and stroll along the harbourside.

There are some great fish restaurants here too.

The Smooth Escape

Best things to do in Cala d’Or, Mallorca

The popular holiday town of Cala d’Or is located in southeastern Mallorca, the largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands. Extending along an incredibly beautiful stretch of coastline, the town and its surroundings are known for their heavenly beaches (or calas) with vibrant blue water and white sand.

While beach-hopping is undeniably one of the best things to do in Cala d’Or, there’s more to do in this dreamy resort town than lounging on its sun-soaked shores. From walks in nature and boat trips out on the sea to romantic strolls around a yacht-filled marina, Cala d’Or or the ‘Golden Bay’ offers a variety of activities.

People swimming in the turquoise waters at Cala Esmeralda beach, one of the best beaches in Cala d'Or

I spent a few days in Cala d’Or during my week-long trip around the island and can definitely recommend including this place in your Mallorca itinerary . After all the hiking and exploring I did in northern Mallorca, in the Soller area , Cala d’Or was the perfect place to slow down a bit and take in the blissful Mediterranean beach town vibes.

Below, you’ll find my list of the top things to do in Cala d’Or as well as my recommendations on the best hotels to stay. Ready to start planning your trip?

Disclosure: This article contains affiliate links from which I may make a commission at no additional cost to you if you make a purchase.

Best things to do in Cala d’Or

1) relax on the beaches of cala d’or.

There’s no doubt that one of the best things to do in Cala d’Or is to relax on its gorgeous beaches. The town is home to several small coves, known as calas, which feature white sand and mesmerizing turquoise water. Surrounded by rocky outcrops, the calas are sheltered from big waves and usually have calm waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

From east to west, the beaches to explore here are Cala Serena, Cala Ferrera, Cala Esmeralda, Cala Gran, Cala Petita, Calo d’es Pou and Cala Egos. The largest of them is Cala Gran. It has toilets, showers, several beach bars and rentals for SUPs and pedal boats. There are also umbrellas and sunbeds for rent.

a footpath surrounded by shrubs leading to Cala Esmeralda beach in Cala d'Or

While the Cala d’Or beaches are undeniably beautiful, they tend to get very crowded in the summer season. If you’re looking for a beach with fewer crowds, Cala Serena might be your best bet.

2) Spend a day at Mondrago Natural Park

Another one of the best things to do in Cala d’Or is to visit Mondrago Natural Park. This coastal nature reserve is just 6 km (3.7 mi) from Cala d’Or and can easily be reached by car, bus or bike. If you’re looking for a bit of adventure, you can also visit the park on a guided jet ski tour .

With its peaceful pine forests, white-sand beaches, wetlands and numerous bird species, the park is a lovely place to spend a day in nature and is free to visit. There are several walking trails and viewpoints to explore here as well.

A walking trail in a coastal pine forest at Mondrago Natural Park, one of the best day trips from Cala d'Or

Most people visit the park for its three beaches – S’Amarador Beach (the largest), Cala Mondrago and Calo des Borgit (the smallest). These beaches are known for their dazzling blue-green water and some people even consider them to be the most beautiful beaches in Mallorca.

When the sea is calm, these beaches are great for snorkeling. Apparently, lots of fish tend to hide here near the rocks along the shoreline.

Unfortunately, during my visit, the sea at Mondrago Natural Park was really rough and full of debris so I didn’t get to see those wonderfully calm neon blue waters that the park is famous for. Just another reason to come back!

3) Walk around Cala d’Or Marina

The lively Cala d’Or Marina is situated in the long and narrow Cala Llonga, just a short walk from the town center. Lined with palm trees and filled with gleaming white boats, it’s a scenic place for a stroll. This is also where jet ski tours and boat tours depart from and where you can charter yachts.

a row of white yachts docked in Cala d'Or Marina

Around the marina, there’s a wide range of restaurants and bars to choose from. They offer a variety of cuisines, ranging from seafood (like in the upscale restaurant Port Petit) to burgers, tapas and even Chinese food. The marina really comes to life in the evenings since that’s when everyone comes here to have dinner.

Tip: If you’re in the mood to explore, continue walking along the coast, past the marina until you get to Es Forti fortress. It’s an 18th-century fortress with great views of the nearby calas and the sea.

4) Go on a boat trip

Taking a boat tour is one of the most fun things to do in Cala d’Or and a wonderful way to discover the scenic coastline, hidden coves and the azure sea.

From private tours on luxurious catamarans and sailing yachts to group tours on more basic motor boats, there are options to suit all budgets. A highly popular and family-friendly option is to take a tour on the Starfish glass bottom catamaran.

On the boat trips, you’ll typically visit a variety of beautiful swimming spots, have the opportunity to go snorkeling and stand-up paddle boarding or simply relax with a cold drink and work on your tan. You can also choose to go on a sunset dinner cruise or a dolphin watching tour.

If you want to explore independently, at Cala d’Or Marina, you can rent a private electric boat which doesn’t require having a license, and go on a self-guided excursion.

5) Enjoy Cala d’Or nightlife

One thing that really surprised me about Cala d’Or was how vibrant its nightlife scene was for such a small town. Although you won’t find huge nightclubs here like in some of the other places in Mallorca, you can definitely find some fun parties and dance the night away if that’s what you feel like!

The majority of the pubs, nightclubs and cocktail bars are concentrated in Cala d’Or center, along the streets of Carrer d’en Toni Costa, Avenida de Bélgica and Carrer de Santanyi.

Some of the most popular bars here are Mabu-Hay, Dugan’s Irish Pub and Cheeki Tiki Bar. In the evenings, many of the bars also have free live music performances.

6) Take a day trip to Calo des Moro

While visiting Cala d’Or, be sure to also take a day trip to Calo des Moro. This little sandy cove sits about 20 km (12 mi) southwest of Cala d’Or and is often considered the most beautiful beach in Mallorca.

After visiting this place I certainly understand what the hype is about! Even on a cloudy day, the water in the cove was the most incredible shade of turquoise. It was so vivid that it looked as if it was glowing!

The small cove of Calo des Moro with vivid blue water surrounded by cliffs, a great day trip destination from Cala d'Or

Because of its beauty and small size, Calo des Moro tends to get very crowded in the summer months. Therefore, if you want to enjoy it, come here early. Apparently, in July and August, people sometimes have to wait for an hour or longer to be able to access the beach since the authorities regulate the number of people they let there.

Just a short walk from Calo des Moro lies Cala S’Almunia, which is also very picturesque and definitely worth a visit. Here you’ll find a tiny cove with crystalline water sheltered by rocks and surrounded by old boat houses. It’s like a natural swimming pool and the perfect spot to cool off in the summer heat.

The natural pool of Cala S'Almunia with clear turquoise water surrounded by rocky shores and a white boat house

7) Visit the Drach Caves

Another one of the major attractions in this part of Mallorca is the Drach Caves or Cuevas del Drach, which are about 25 km (15 mi) from Cala d’Or. Consisting of 4 separate massive caves, this wonder of nature features impressive stalagmites and stalactites and one of the largest underground lakes in the world – Lake Martel.

To explore the caves, you’ll have to take a guided tour, which lasts for about 1.5 hours and takes you through a 1.2 km (0.7 mi) long route inside the cave. During your visit, you’ll also get to see a light show and a performance by a small orchestra inside the cave.

Hotels in Cala d’Or: Where to stay?

Cala d’Or has a wide range of places to stay – from family-friendly hotels and beautiful holiday apartments to lovely whitewashed villas and ‘adults only’ hotels.

In terms of location, the best area to stay would be somewhere near the calas if you want to have the beach at your doorstep. However, since Cala d’Or is such a small town, wherever you decide to stay, you’re always just a short walk away from the beach.

If you’re going to visit Cala d’Or in the summer, book your accommodation well in advance since this is a popular holiday resort and many hotels get sold out.

Here are some of the best hotels in Cala d’Or for different budgets:

BUDGET: Hotel Antares This low-cost hotel is located in Cala d’Or center, close to all the shops, restaurants and beaches. The rooms are simple but modern and come with an AC.

MID-RANGE: Casa Ceiba Maria A pretty family-run guest house located only 300 meters from the beach. With their fantastic breakfast, large rooms and an outdoor pool, this place offers great value for money.

LUXURY: Inturotel Cala Esmeralda This fabulous beachfront hotel is the ideal option for those looking to pamper themselves. It is ‘adults only’ and boasts an on-site spa, beautiful gardens, multiple outdoor pools and direct access to Cala Esmeralda Beach.

Starfish Glass Bottom Boats

Cala d’Or is one of the most popular southern coastal areas of Mallorca. It is made up of a serie of small sandy coves of similar features. You can gather magnificent beaches, shopping, gastronomy, and nightlife areas, as well as interesting excursions. The Cala d’Or marina called Port Petit is one of the most appreciated in Mallorca.

In addition to the Cala d’Or beach, we find Cala Gran , Cala Esmeralda , Cala Ferrera , Cala Serena , Cala Galera , Cala Egos , and Caló d’es Pou . The beaches, framed in low sandstone cliffs contrasting with clear turquoise waters are deeper than long.

The two closest excursions are the old 18th century military fortress Es Fortí declared site of cultural interest, and the Mondragó Natural Park and its surrounding bush. Mondragó includes splendid sandy beaches such as Ses Fonts de n’Alis and S’Amarador , is considered as one of the most beautiful coves in Mallorca.

Cala d'Or, Mallorca

Holiday beach resort in the east of Majorca

Cala d'Or or ‘Golden Bay’ in English is the name given to a widely popular, family-friendly tourist resort in the east of the island. Its name could be related to the fact that you are guaranteed the greatest number of sunshine hours on this eastern coastline, being furthest away from the disruptive Serra de Tramuntana mountains, and is close to some of the best beaches.

Cala d'Or actually covers a stretch of development that includes a number of coves: Cala Ferrera, Cala Esmeralda, Cala Serena, Cala Gran, and Cala Llonga. Each of the various 'calas' or bays have their own distinctive character and former fishing harbours have been turned into 21st-century marinas. It’s also worth noting that there’s a mini train connecting them, making it easy for holidaymakers to travel from the main resort to these beaches.

Cala d’Or has been tastefully developed. Thanks to regulations imposed on all construction of apartments and hotels in the area, its whitewashed Ibiza style buildings are really quite pretty. The fact that it's divided into different areas means that most people can find a holiday here to suit their individual needs, whether it's sailing, diving or drinking wine in the waterfront bars. Those who prefer a quieter holiday, sitting on a sun lounger by day and eating a lovely dinner by night, are also well catered for. A bonus for foodies is that Cala d'Or is home to plenty of decent restaurants . Head to the main marina to find waterfront eateries or just choose from the great selection along the streets within the town centre.

The coves boast charming little beaches surrounded by woodland and cliffs. The beaches themselves are pretty small and get very busy during peak holiday season so do get down early to reserve your spot. The water is wonderfully clear and inviting, ideal for swimming on a warm summer's day.

Sights & Attractions in Cala d'Or

If you have rented a car and want to sample some local historic sights, then there are some interesting ruins you can visit in the east of the island. On the top of a nearby hill towards Felanitx, you will find Santueri Castle which boasts epic views across the east coast. The ruins date back to Roman times and, being 423 metres above sea level, they offer breathtaking views. On a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of the island of Cabrera from here. The castle is open daily from April until October, from 10:30 until 18:30 and entry is €4 per person.

Across the valley from Santueri Castle, on top of another hill, is the Sanctuary of Sant Salvador , an iconic monastery dating back to the 14th century which again offers magnificent views over Mallorca’s countryside and out towards the sea. At the beginning of the 18th century, the present church was built along with a statue of the Lady of Sant Salvador which was placed above the altar. Here you will also find a large stone statue of Christ built in the 20th century.

Beaches in Cala d'Or

Cala d'Or beaches The area of Cala d'Or comprises five small beaches , and they are some of the most picturesque you could ever wish for. Here, turquoise shallow waters are met by soft gold sand, and some of the prettiest are lined by pine forests and greenery. The largest of them is Cala Gran which is only 40 metres wide. It is, however, 100 metres deep so, as long as you don't want to lie right by the water's edge, you should be able to find a place to sit. The other four beaches are similar in that they are located within sheltered coves, making them quite small and charming.

Mondragó Natural Park beaches If you are prepared to travel a little further afield (and by that we mean you need a car or a boat), then you should head to Mondrago Natural Park . This area is protected from development and has a real 'back to nature' feel. There are two beaches here, S'Aramador and Cala Mondrago , both offering gorgeous soft white sand and an incredibly blue sea. They are linked by a paved promenade and you can find beach bars at both. Mondrago Natural Park also has several trails that you can explore on foot.

The secluded cove To get away from the more touristy beaches try Cala Varques , a 90 metre long stretch of golden sandy beach favoured by locals. There’s no car park at the beach and you have to walk 15 minutes to access it but it’s well worth it for its picture postcard setting. There are no facilities here so make sure you bring your own provisions.

Things to do in Cala d'Or

Whilst there’s certainly a leisurely, slow-paced way of life in Cala d’Or with many opting for a kick back and relax on the beach kind of holiday, if you can’t sit still, then there are plenty of activities and entertainment on offer for visitors in the summer months.

Boat Trips There are so many hidden coves which are only accessible by sea in the area that we would highly recommend taking to the water at some point on your holiday. A number of companies offer boat trips in Cala d'Or , both for full and half days. For a more private experience, you can charter your own boat , with or without a skipper, which allows you to explore the coastline at your own pace.

Watersports Cala d’Or offers a few family-friendly watersports to enjoy in the summer months between Easter and October. Pedaloes are available at most of the beaches or, if you fancy taking things to the next level, why not rent a kayak or go paddle boarding?

Diving & snorkelling If you’d like to get up close and personal with some of the underwater attractions of Mallorca, then snorkelling or diving could be for you. There are a number of diving schools in the area, including La Morena Diving Center, Petro Divers and MDS My Diving School.

Shopping If you are in need of some last-minute holiday essentials, there are a plenty of fashion boutiques along with the usual souvenir and convenience stores around the resort. Whilst there’s no market in Cala d’Or, the closest big one is at Santanyi on Wednesdays and Saturdays or Felanitx on Sundays, both within a 20 to 25-minute drive.

Tennis There are tennis courts available to hire at Tennis Club Cala d’Or for €15 per hour. There are discounts available for multiple slots.

Golf There’s an 18-hole golf course at Vall d'Or , within a 10 to 15-minute drive. This par 71 and 5,538m long course boasts spectacular views out over the Mediterranean sea and a wonderful breeze. The restaurant in the clubhouse is widely respected and, in the summer, holds a BBQ every Friday evening with live music.

Cycling Cycling is very popular in Cala d'Or where there are many marked cycle routes to choose from. You can hire bicycles from Moto-Sprint, and there’s Mar I Monte or Danilo Hondo ePoint also offering rental services.

Walking There are some hiking trails in the hills behind the east coast in the Llevant mountain range , more hillocks than mountains but beautiful all the same! More gentle walking trails can also be found in the stunning Mondrago Natural Park .

Dining in Cala d'Or

You certainly aren’t short of places to eat in Cala d’Or. Bars, cafes and restaurants offering a huge variety of cuisines line the streets of the resort. There’s something for everyone from cheap and cheerful eateries to sophisticated dining experiences.

Restaurants in the town centre Within the town, there are pedestrianized streets filled with different restaurants so you’ll be sure to stumble upon something to tempt your appetite. A rendezvous with tapas is a must whilst holidaying on this Spanish island so do head on down to Restaurant La Bodega where you will find all your tapas favourites like garlic prawns, dates with bacon, charcuterie and cheese boards. We love this place for its authentic style, oversized tables and great selection of wines.

If you want to try something more unusual, then Restaurant Diferent has built a solid reputation over the past decade and serves innovative fusion food where traditional meets modern. It also serves some of the best cocktails in the area, so do make sure you sample their creative delights. For Asian food and sushi, then we highly recommend Soy Asian Kitchen & Bar . Their sushi is first class and you are bound to find your favourite Asian dishes here including Pad Thai, Chicken Satay or Ramen soup. Finally, those looking for a hearty meat feast will find that Meatclub will cater for all carnivorous desires.

Waterfront restaurants If you prefer waterside dining, then head on down to the marina where you'll find plenty of restaurants on offer. The Yacht Club is an age-old favourite and is highly regarded for its seafood and impeccable views over the marina. Rucula del Puerto Restaurant is a Mediterranean eatery which specializes in fresh seafood and has a wonderful cellar featuring some of Mallorca’s best wines. Port Petit has earned its place as one of the top-ranked restaurants in Cala d'Or thanks to its unparalleled service, creative Mediterranean cuisine and wonderful set menu. Gadus is another favourite which retains a loyal following owing to a good selection of international food suitable for the whole family along with excellent views over the port.

Nightlife in Cala d'Or

If you are looking for somewhere to enjoy some early evening sundowners, we recommend heading to Waves Bar to soak up the wonderful views over the port whilst savouring the last rays of sunshine. Once the sun has gone down, there are plenty of places to partake in some late-night fun. Upstairs Bar can be found in the middle of the resort and caters for a variety of people as it possesses an open-air terrace to kick back and relax with friends over cocktails, but also has a DJ and dance floor inside.

If you are up for some karaoke whilst holidaying in Cala d’Or then Betty’s Music Bar is your best shout. It’s always got a bit of atmosphere and provides some good late night entertainment. Dugan’s Irish Pub is the place to dance to some live bands playing indie and rock music.

To dance until the early hours of the morning, then Sparkles Music Bar in Cala Egos is one of our top picks. But, for the ultimate night out, Farah’s is the only proper nightclub in Cala d’Or and it is famous for its themed parties and contemporary House music.

Villas in Cala d'Or

You can escape to the country in this area on the east coast and enjoy the privacy of an old-style finca or a modern villa . This type of accommodation is suitable for large groups and families looking to relax by the pool.

Hotels in Cala d'Or

Cala d'Or is a purpose-built holiday resort and, as such, has a huge selection of hotels . There’s everything from large-scale, all-inclusive hotels to small independent establishments. If you'd like to stay in something a little more characterful, you will need to head into the hills to the west of Cala d'Or for a finca hotel in a converted farmhouse .

Melia Cala d'Or Hotel is a little oasis away from the hustle and bustle of Cala d’Or, and one of the most luxurious hotels in the area. It has everything you could want for, including an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, spa facilities, a good buffet breakfast and of course first class service at the poolside bar and evening restaurant.

Hotel Cala d’Or is a 4-star, adults-only hotel just a stone throw away from the beach offering superb views over the sea. Its highlights include a spa & wellness centre and leisure activities like aqua gym and yoga. A lovely spot for some rest and rehabilitation.

How to get to Cala d'Or

By car By car , it takes just under an hour to get to Cala d’Or from the airport. Take the Ma-19 towards Llucmajor and continue onto Campos before taking the Ma-5120 for Felanitx. At Felanitx, hop on the Ma-14, followed by the Ma-4016, then the Ma-4013 carries you through to Cala d’Or.

Public transport A public bus travels between the airport and Cala d’Or. Take the AeroTIB bus line A51 which only takes 1h20. TIB bus number 501 travels between Palma bus station at Plaça d'Espanya and Cala d’Or and takes over 1h30 because it has more stops. Both buses connect Cala d’Or to Santanyi, Campos, Llucmajor and S’Arenal.

We Recently Sailed On Vita Bel. The crew are amazing host’s and we were made feel very welcome on his boat. We had great trips in the past and this one didn’t disappoint! When you take the Sunset Tour on Vita Bel the aim is to relax and chill and have fun which is very easy to do. The Mediterranean Sea is beautiful in the evening. It was a lovely relaxing experience and I highly recommend it.

Jefferson Morris, June 2022

We had the best day of our trip on the Vita Bel! Nigel and Juan went above and beyond to give us such a fun and special day. The boat was very spacious and clean. The food they served for lunch was so good and features great local Spanish cuisine. They made sure we got to stop several times in various coves for a swim and paddle boarding, but also made sure we had plenty of timing for actual sailing on the open water. I highly recommend using Vita Bel for a day charter while in Cala D’Or!

Vita Bel remains the best run and fun experience on the Island. We’ve returned year after year because it gives us a great day out. This time we chose an evening cruise and it was exactly as described. The atmosphere, the experience and the food was second to none. I just don’t know how Nigel manages to produce such an excellent meal from a small galley! Highly recommended.
