Check out this list of the best family farms near Los Angeles including Ventura, Orange, San Diego, Riverside and Santa Barbara Counties. This is an opportunity for students to learn about a real working farm in their local area.

Do your children know where their food comes from?  In a desire to teach my own, I have taken my children to a couple of local farms in Los Angeles to take a tour.  The purpose of a farm tour is to connect people with the farmers and land that grow their food.

During a tour, you get a behind-the-scenes look at how a variety of food is grown and meet farmers who grow crops and raise livestock.   In fact, the food your family eats may in fact come from one of Southern California’s family farms.

So take a peak at this list of local farms in our area and schedule a tour today!

Sunday 22nd of January 2017

Hello, my name is Michael and I run a Non-profit for mentoring inner city kids. Our mission is to change their environment, and change their mindset. I have been looking for an opportunity to take a group of kids to experience working on a farm, so they can witness new possibilities to help expad their minds and possibly inspire them to pursue more than they thought possible. We are based out of Los angeles.

What an awesome organization you have started mentoring kids in need. I am in awe. You said you were interested in taking the kids to a farm. Did you see the complete list? If you are interested in taking the kids, I would recommend that you reach out to a farm that you see on list and tell them what you would like to do. Each individual farm has their pricing, field trip programs, etc. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. Thanks!

A visit to a farm gives children the opportunity to learn and explore in new ways, get up close with different animals, and learn more about how food is grown and how it arrives on their plate. And with any luck, your kids will find some new foods they’re willing to try!

To get you started with the planning, here is our list of 15 Fun, Family-Friendly Farms in Los Angeles .

The Gentle Barn teaches children about animals in a way that will change their perspective about themselves and the world around them. We want to show children that even though we all look different, we are all the same inside. Every living being has language and needs food, water, shelter, and love. Our programs follow the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to make sure that we support teachers' curricula.

We teach the children a wide variety of things including what animals eat, where they sleep, how they have families, why roosters crow, why pigs love mud, why goats chew, and how each species communicates through body language. Here at The Gentle Barn, kids gain an understanding of animals, see how much we all have in common, and get to expand their empathy for all living beings.

After a presentation that is geared to age and grade level, the children get to brush the horses, hug the cows, give the pigs tummy rubs, talk to the turkeys, play with the goats and the sheep, and so much more. It is an educational, hands-on experience that they will never forget. Our school program is appropriate for kids K-12.

Take a Tour of This Inspiring Urban Farmstead in the Heart of L.A.

A small experimental farm shows what’s possible when sustainability pioneers work together to turn dormant soil into a source of food and community.

Dinner and garden area at Little City Farm LA

If you stand quietly in the middle of Little City Farm, next to the tall bamboo tripods heavy with climbing bean stalks and the rows of tomatoes, peppers, chard, and onions, you can tune out the sounds of chickens clucking and children playing just long enough to hear the roar of cars speeding down Olympic Boulevard.

Look up, and beyond the 100-year-old palm trees that stand at attention on the neighboring streets, you might spot an LAPD helicopter crossing the blue sky.

It’s so easy to forget that you’re in the literal center of sprawling Los Angeles when you arrive at this urban homestead, surrounded by hay bales, backhoes, and pitchforks. It’s such a wonderland of edible, growing things that guests (and magazine writers) spend the first few minutes on the grounds a little dumbfounded by the abrupt change in atmosphere.

“Now imagine that all of the houses on the street were like this, growing different types of vegetables and fruit, and they were sharing it with their neighbors,” says Ben Hirschfeld, the founder of 3R Garden Design, who created this small-but-mighty farm with the homeowner, sustainable design entrepreneur Jenny Silbert, and chef David Kuo, owner of the West L.A. restaurant, Little Fatty , using reclaimed materials, many donated plants, and hours of hard labor.

“I want this garden to be an example of the future, of how hyper local food could be,” says Hirschfeld.

Garden area at Little City Farm LA

Thomas J. Story

Silbert lives in the house at the top of a flight of stairs on the double lot with her husband, Aengus O’Neil-Dunne, and their three kids. Silbert is an architect, a designer, a self-described “master scavenger,” and the founder of Rewilder , a company that upcycles waste, turning the banners advertising the Hollywood Bowl that hang on street lights across the city into tote bags, and foam scraps from the mattress industry and discarded industrial fabric into outdoor furniture. When the family bought the property back in 2016, the main house occupied one lot, and a tennis court and a smaller bungalow and a patch of yard was on the other.

A chance meeting with Hirschfeld changed everything.

“I was at a sustainability pop-up market at the Google headquarters in Venice for Rewilder,” she says. “Ben was in the booth next to mine selling furniture he made from reclaimed materials, and we just started talking.”

Hirschfeld described his passion for planting edible landscapes to Silbert. Silbert shared that she wanted to plant a garden at her home, using the sizable lot they had, and to have her kids experience harvesting their own food. Within months, she’d hired him to plant a small orchard that was irrigated with gray water from the house.

It was a modest success, but Hirschfeld had bigger plans.

For years, he had been talking about his urban garden dreamscape—a fantasy world where the city offers rebates for edible gardens in the same way it rewards people for planting drought-tolerant natives and no-water lawns— with anyone who would listen. His business creating school and community gardens, and maintaining smaller residential gardens, was starting to thrive. And he was trading his produce for free meals at restaurants like Little Fatty, Kuo’s popular Taiwanese restaurant.

“I would show up with a wheelbarrow full of vegetables, and I would take all of the women I met from the dating apps there for dinner,” says Hirschfeld, who grew up in Beverly Hills and is a self-taught farmer. “I was kind of a VIP.”

Hirschfeld’s goal was to partner with a restaurant and supply food for seasonal dishes on the menu, as an example of what truly local farm-to-table dining could be. After years of preaching about his vision to Kuo, the chef’s interest was piqued.

Little City Farm's Ben Hirschfeld, Jen- ny Silbert, and chef David Kuo

Silbert, meanwhile, wanted a farm partner to help defray some of the costs of maintaining the orchard and planting a larger garden. So the three of them sat down over brunch to hatch a plan: They’d take a jackhammer to half of the tennis court and plant a full-fledged vegetable plot, a kind of backyard garden partially maintained by Kuo as a way of navigating current laws around agriculture and farms that supply food to restaurants.

Kuo, for his part, has been patient with the process. He describes growing up as a first-generation Angeleno, in a house known in the neighborhood for “growing weird plants in the backyard,” before the Asian veggies his mother wanted to eat and cook with were widely available at local markets. And he’s excited to see how the relationship grows.

“I still have to order ingredients from larger suppliers, because we’re never going to get 200 pounds of onions from Little City,” says Kuo, who worked with Jean-Georges Vongerichten and in a Wolfgang Puck kitchen before opening his own restaurant. “But it’s been a great partnership. We have been selling the vegetables at a sandwich shop and market next to the restaurant, and people are really into the idea.”

When the coronavirus hit, it seemed like there was nothing but time to spend outside, and the mood was ripe for radical, life-changing ideas.

People drinking cocktails at Little City Farm LA

“No one can believe that this land was a tennis court for almost 100 years, until March of 2020,” says Silbert, who hired Elle Street Art to paint a vibrant mural across the remaining sports court. “It’s astounding, actually, when I think about the timeline. We spent a month digging out rocks. Everything about this land was literally the polar opposite of what is here now. It’s extraordinary to see how it’s grown. It feels really profound.”

“We had to till it, and truck in some soil, and amend it until it was rich enough to grow plants,” adds Hirschfeld, who works 16 to 20 hours a week at the farm. “Everyone I talk to is excited about our progress. The owner of C&S Nursery will just give us flats of seedlings. He wants this to succeed.”

The experiment appears to be paying off. Silbert is using the garden and the smaller house to host events, as an educational garden, and as an urban farm rental on Airbnb. She’s hosting the “Women in Green” forum on the property, and is organizing a gathering with Good Is the New Cool: The Principles of Purpose author Afdhel Aziz.

The dinner they hosted for Sunset, with a Yola mezcal cocktail and a family-style meal by Kuo, featuring produce from LCF, was an example of how thoughtful, local, sustainable entertaining can also be beautiful.

“For Ben, it’s about farming. For David, it’s about food. But for me, it’s about community,” says Silbert. “Living in harmony with your values in a city like this is a hard thing to reconcile. The farm has made it easier for me.”

Interactive Farm Map

Apricot Lane Farms was founded in 2011 by John and Molly Chester, and today spans 234 acres of countryside in Moorpark, California, just 40 miles north of Los Angeles. We regeneratively grow more than 200 varieties of fruits and vegetables, and raise sheep, cows, pigs, chickens and ducks with care and respect, while working in harmony (or a comfortable level of disharmony) within our dynamic ecosystem. The farm is certified organic and biodynamic.

THE BIGGEST LITTLE FARM

Apricot Lane Farms is also the home of the award-winning, critically acclaimed feature documentary The Biggest Little Farm . Directed by filmmaker and farmer John Chester, the film is a testament to the complexity of nature, following John, his wife Molly and their dog Todd on an epic odyssey to attempt to farm within a reawakening ecosystem. The film was released theatrically in North America by NEON in 2019, and has since screened in over 275 theaters across the US, and has been released in more than 20 countries worldwide …and counting.

It’s currently available via streaming on HBO Max, Youtube TV, Prime Video, and Apple TV, as well as to purchase on DVD & Blu-Ray. The Biggest Little Farm is also available for educational and other special screening licenses.

Regenerative Farming

123 Farm is nestled within the historic property now known as Highland Springs Ranch & Inn, which dates back to 1884 when it was established first as a stagecoach stop and later developed into a health resort in the late 1920s. As a health resort, the property became known for helping those who were sick heal through natural remedies, utilizing organic produce grown onsite. In an effort to continue with this philosophy, 123 Farm has been practicing regenerative farming, which incorporates permaculture and organic farming practices to build up biodiversity, cultivate farmlands and revitalize degraded soil. Through regenerative farming, we are able to produce high quality, nutrient-dense foods while simultaneously reversing economical pollution and climate change, helping us work through the ultimate goal of having a productive farm and contribute to a healthier community. ‍

Once upon a time, before condos and strip malls and acres of residential subdivisions, Southern California was full of little farms.

It was “the largest, most bountiful agricultural county in the U.S.,” said Rachel Surls, sustainable food systems advisor for UC Cooperative Extension in Los Angeles County and author of “ From Cows to Concrete: The Rise and Fall of Farming in Los Angeles .” And then, after World War II, it became more lucrative to build houses than grow food.

“Really what changed was the value of land,” Surls said. After the war, the county’s population soared “and land was valued for other things than agriculture. Even the farmers who wanted to stay in business couldn’t because the taxes on land went up — sometimes as much as 300% in a year — and ancillary businesses they relied on, like packing houses, closed and went out of business.”

Should we pick our homegrown tomatoes when they’re green? Three experts weigh in with harvesting tips, plus plant-related activities for September 2023.

Then new municipal rules made farming illegal in many cities, she said. As the region became more urban, “people didn’t want cows and tractors in their neighborhoods. They didn’t want to live down the street from a poultry ranch or dairy and they didn’t want to drive their nice new car in their nice new subdivision behind a tractor going 10 miles per hour.”

All of that seems pretty quaint now; how many of us yearn to live near someone who grows fresh strawberries or raises chickens for eggs? Surls helps urban farmers as part of her job, and she says though there aren’t any formal statistics about the number of urban farms in our region, subjectively it feels like the tide is turning and more small farms are creeping into our urban area.

But it’s still a tough slog. Many urban farmers are growing on leased land that could be sold out from under them if the owner gets an offer too good to refuse, she said. And many use organic methods to farm, but can’t call themselves organic because they haven’t taken the time — up to three years — expense and bookkeeping required to get and keep a USDA organic certification.

And then there’s the competition from supermarkets and grocery stores where you can find almost any produce, no matter whether it’s in season here or not, at prices often lower than what farm stands can afford to charge.

Planning your weekend?

Stay up to date on the best things to do, see and eat in L.A .

Really, the big advantage that urban farms have is their freshness, a commodity that’s slowly reestablishing itself in American homes. You can see where your food was grown and — in some cases — even pick it yourself.

But many urban farms grow for restaurants, subscription boxes or even farmers markets in an attempt to regulate their income, so it’s not always easy to find a place where you can go and buy those freshly picked fruits and vegetables, or pick them yourself. That’s why we’ve compiled this list, to help you find your own farm experience.

We looked for places that are within L.A. or a two-hour drive away, selling produce primarily grown on their farms (although some larger farm stands may sell additional produce, eggs and other items produced elsewhere).

Note that only a few of these stands operate daily. Smaller farms only sell once a week or every other week because they just don’t have the space or help to grow and harvest enough food for daily sales. Others have created a whole “farm experience” around their stands, offering tours, “u-pick” options, petting zoos and other activities to draw customers in. If we’ve missed one of your favorite stands, email me at [email protected].

A variety of unique products is on sale at the farm. Chocolates are a reliable souvenir for friends and family back home. But an Arabian Spices Camel Milk Chocolate  Bar is far more interesting than a box of Russell Stovers. Infused with an exotic mix of Middle Eastern flavors, it’s one of several imported specialty items available in the gift shop.

Powdered milk that comes from the camels on the farm is also available. Camel milk handmade soaps, lotions, and even lip balm can be purchased. Their soaps are one of their best-selling products.

Oasis Camel Dairy Farm Products

Made with all-natural ingredients, they come in some unique scents. Try Gold Frankincense and Myrrh or Rosemary and Mint. The camel’s milk has moisturizing properties that soothe dry and cracked skin and lips. All proceeds from the store go towards the upkeep of the farm and the creatures who call it home.

Bondolio Farm Tours

Olives for all of us.

Olives falling from crate

BY APPOINTMENT ONLY

Tours of the Bondolio farm and mill are offered by appointment only. You’ll receive a tour of our farm, our grove with its lovely trees (if not raining), our mill, and of course our indoor tasting room. Many folks tell us our tasting is the best and that they’ve never experienced another like ours.

While we can usually accommodate most tours, Bondolio is a family-run farm and we respectfully ask that you request your tour at least a month prior to the preferred date.

To schedule a tour, please call Karen at 916-715-9007 or send an email to [email protected] .

Tour  $50 per person

Tour and Pizza  ($75 per person) If you have 10 people or more, we will be happy to light our outdoor pizza oven and make authentic wood-fired pizza for everyone. Our Tuscan clay wood oven takes 72 hours to bring it up to proper firing temperature.

Other ways to visit

The farm is open to the public every year on the second Sunday in December. Come celebrate the Harvest, taste our fresh-milled oil, and enjoy a made-to-order, wood-fired pizza on the patio.

Even if you you can’t visit us in person, you can take a virtual tour below. Watch the video and learn more about our old world farming methods and beautifully engineered Italian mill.

Join Us for Our Annual Olio Nuovo Celebration

On the second Sunday in December every year, we celebrate the first of the harvest with our olio nuovo , the new oil. As the olives change from their brightly colored green to a softer, less flashy shade with multi colors of rose, purple and black, we start harvesting.

We harvest by hand (rapidly becoming a lost art in California) when the olives are just right, and they go from tree to bottle in less than 90 minutes. Because the “new oil” has yet to settle down, the taste profile is fruity, buttery, and delightfully green and peppery on the palate. Each year we bottle a very limited amount of this seasonal gift.

You can be a part of the Olio Nuovo celebration.

Free tastings with Karen and Malcolm makes from-scratch pizza in our wood-fired outdoor oven to raise funds for Angel Flight West .

We also have a thoughtfully curated selection of gourmet food items and unique gifts…just in time for your holiday entertaining and giving. We’ll even help you assemble the perfect gift basket for your favorite foodie or to say thank you to someone for their hospitality.

No appointment needed for this event! Visit our Facebook page for more information as Harvest draws near.

Growing, Harvesting, and Milling

Here’s a video and more information about our sustainable growing practices, gentle harvest-by-hand, and organic milling at the farm.

Take an up-close look at the olive harvest at our farm. Here are some things to watch for:

  • Open centers in the trees. Careful pruning allows sunlight and air to circulate and encourages healthy growth. We love our trees and Malcolm is meticulous about pruning.
  • The water tower and irrigation lines. Olive trees are quite happy in our semi-arid Californian climate. They only need a sip of water every so often to produce fat olives.
  • Hand picking. We are gentle with our trees and their olives. Hand picking is labor intensive, but we don’t shake our trees or use machines to harvest because it causes stress and bruising. (Also, see note above about how much we love our trees.)
  • The long building on the right. This houses our mill, where we cold-press and bottle the oil at our farm. Olives go from branch to mill in 90 minutes and, during harvest, the air smells so fresh and green!
  • The mill itself. The gorgeous Molinova mill is A+ engineering from Pieralisi. It takes our olives from start to finish, without needing heat or chemicals to extract the oil. The end result is clear, pure, organic Bondolio.
  • All those beautiful olives! Our signature Sicilian flavor profile – what Karen calls “the smile taste” – is a balance of grassy Nocellara, peppery Cerasuola, and wonderfully buttery Biancollila olives.
  • And for fun…if you watch carefully at the beginning, you can see the big bike sculpture in the Bondolio grove.

Thank you so much to the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, UC Davis for filming this!

Coo over precious ‘Barnyard Babies' on this Sonoma County Farm Trails tour

Go "bee"-hind the scenes to learn about beekeeping, cheesemaking, and the agrarian experience., by alysia gray painter • published march 29, 2024 • updated on march 29, 2024 at 3:55 pm, what to know.

  • Blossoms, Bees & Barnyard Babies Spring Tour along the Sonoma County Farm Trails
  • May 4 and 5, 2024
  • Free but you'll need to register in advance; the self-guided tour will take you by many busy farms in the area, with inside looks at animals, orchards, and more

BABYLAMBSCROLL: There are many social sites tailored to just what we want to see nowadays, but what we're really looking for is the kind of page that delivers photo after photo of little fuzzy farm animals enjoying hay, romping with their siblings, and basking in the soft sunshine of spring. Perhaps this app could be called BabyLambScroll or even BeeUptoDate or another name informing potential users that the cute critter quotient will be adorably high. Of course, we could always go directly to where lambs and chicks and ponies live, all to meet them in real life while also learning about their care. Several great go-on-your-own farm tours thread throughout California, from Ventura to the northern counties, and joining one can be a heartwarming, knowledge-growing exercise in joy and connection. Coming in early May is one of the biggies, and it is baaa -ck for more behind-the-scenes peeks, demos, talks, and, sweet, chances to meet animals.

THE SONOMA COUNTY FARM TRAILS... is hosting "Blossoms, Bees & Barnyard Babies" on May 4 and 5. Attendees are invited to "choose their own agrarian adventure" by perusing the long list of activities, from an orchard tour at Ambix Spirits to Bohemian Creamery's cheesemaking tour. A soap-making lesson, a talk on raising cattle, and opportunities to squee over little bunnies and lambs are also part of the rural-strong roster. So are opportunities to snack on what is grown and made right there: "Taste farm-fresh cheese, honey, juice, wine, olive oil, and jams" is the enticing call to action. Shopping, too, is part of the springful celebration, if you'd like to head home with some of the farm-made goodies. Wending your way from farm to farm is free, but submitting your RSVP ahead of time? We "kid" you not: You must do so before you goat, er, go.
