I picked up the remains of one today, I guess the top which blows off. The good bit is the remaining metal tag which I guess somebody might need. Get in touch if you do. I can use the split pin and metal tag for the 11 1/2 or 10 pound white practice bomb if any one has one.

This is the bottom and the hole in the middle is where the striker comes through. The shape of the top of the striker is very like the mushroom head on the early Grenade No 5 striker, which comes through a keyhole in a metal plate. The end of this plate has a larger hole which fits over the projecting stud on the right of your photo. The plate can then pivot around the stud when the tripwire is pulled, allowing the spring loaded striker to pass through the large part of the keyhole, into the igniter. This flare has been broken by means other than correct operation otherwise the pin would not be present. The bakelite body does not break up during operation because it would burn out very quickly and not achieve the desired burn time of about 40 seconds for this mark. A closing cap blows off under gas pressure from the burning flare. This mark was quickly replaced when the enemy pioneers realised that the design allowed the tripwire to be cut anywhere along its length, for the flare to become inoperative. It was quickly replaced by a Mk 2 version with a more complex mechanism, which burned for 60 seconds and operated when pulled or cut. This was very difficult to set up and unless you knew what you were doing it went off during set up. This was replaced by Mk2/1 which stayed in service for many years, into the 1970s at least, had a slightly easier mechanism and a burn time of 80 seconds. The flare pots stayed the same but in each case the flare composition was improved.

Surface Trip Flare: Intruder detection light tripwire, used to activate a lightstick

The detection light tripwire is used to trip a 6” ultra high intensity orange lightstick (15cm) . Developed by the U.S. Army to facilitate intruder detection, the tripwire replaces pyrotechnical accessories that are sensitive to damp and that can cause fires to break out.

The lightstick is attached to the plate of the tripwire. When the tripwire, connected to the tripping lever, is pulled, it activates the high intensity lightstick.

This reusable intruder detection light tripwire has several attaching holes for securing it to different types of supports : trees, door or window frames…

Tripflare Kit

The double action Tripflare is activated by either pulling or cutting the trip wire, illuminating the infiltrators with a 45,000 candela flare for 40 seconds minimum.

The Tripflare is designed primarily for use by combat troops in forward areas to: illuminate infiltrating enemy forces, protection of camps, bridges, frontiers and depot stores, illuminate prohibited areas and ambush positions, and provide Front Edge of Battle Areas (FEBA) security.

Signals, Flares, Noise Flashes and Other Products

Mk124 smoke and illumination signal.

This signal consists of an aluminum case with protective caps on each end. The case has two raised beads around the circumference for positive flare identification during night use. The case contains four sub-assemblies: smoke candle, smoke igniter, flare candle, and flare igniter. The igniter consists of an arming lever that must be extended before functioning and a mechanism that cocks and then releases the firing pin.

Signal Smoke Ground

Parachute smoke signals consist of a parachute suspended smoke composition element and a rocket motor propulsion assembly enclosed in a hand-held aluminum launching tube. The base of the tube contains a primer and an initiating charge. As shipped. the firing pin cap is assembled to the forward end and must he reversed for firing. Stabilizing fins on the rocket are folded parallel to the axis of the signal. An assembly bolt which also transfers the initiating charge flash to the propellant extends into the center of’ the solid propellant filling the propulsion assembly. The parachute with suspension cord is packed on top of the smoke charge, and the tube end is sealed with a rocket barrel seal. A label specifying the firing procedure is affixed to the body of the signal. The principal difference is the color of smoke.

M49-A1 Surface Trip Flare

M49-A1 Surface Trip Flare is used for illuminating encampment perimeters or as a booby trap signal. The flare may be fired by releasing the trigger or by removing a pull pin. If a tripwire is used, cutting or breaking the tripwire will also fire the unit. Upon activation the M49-A1 burns for a minimum of 55 seconds with an average luminosity of 35,000 candlepower.

I think it would be nice if there were flares (or something else) to let your friends know where you are on the map when you need help. That is, unless there's some sort of blueprint for each map... because on a map like icebreaker it's near impossible for me to locate my teammates in a ship that has two million rooms.

A flamethrower can be used as a impromptu flare gun, but 9_6 is right, you should really know where your teammates are, sticking together is the best option. Also, the only map I can think of where you get lost is Bedlam, flares wouldn't work there, would they? I think the solution here is to have named zones in all maps, so team chat displays where your players are.

This has been suggested even more than an M14 nerf, and that's going some. Hell, I've even suggested almost this exact thing nearly a year ago. (NOTE: The search function is right between "new posts" and "quick links")  

Flares would be cool to use when marking out postions. But it would be better to be able to get a flare gun for the pyro to use then just flares.

What about hand held flares? That you can drop? So if your fighting in a dark tunnel or something, you can just toss out a flare, that'll keep it lit for a few minutes

In some way, it could be used to show your position, but like 9_6 said I don't look in the air at all while playing. I'd rather see it as a temporary light source though, you shoot in a corner and the flare stay for an X amount of time offering some light. A good alternative if no one's using the 9mm or the shotgun.

For sale is a Federal Laboratories / Webley No. 1 Mk. 1 flare-gun. Serial number- 31283. This Webley is in great condition with smooth operation! Has a chrome finish and all matching SNS! The Webley No 1. Mark 1 Flare Gun was a rush project for the Royal Flying Corps in 1914-1918. These flare guns were used in World War I and in the early stages of World War II. After World War I they were surplus and sold to Police Agencies in the United States. After the war some of these surplus Flare Guns were purchased by the Federal Laboratories for use as tear gas launchers. Federal Laboratories scrubbed the makers mark and manufacture date off the left side of the receiver, stamped their logo into the left side of the wood stock, and all the metal parts were then Chromed to protect them from corrosion. The words No1 Mk1 and the ser#'s were often left intact. It is unknown how many of these Flare Guns were purchased by Federal Laboratories for their use.

Original British WWII Webley & Scott No.4 Mk.1* Signal Flare Pistol - Serial 23966

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available.  This is a nice example of a WWII Webley & Scott No.4 MkI* pattern 1 1/2 inch (37mm) Flare pistol, manufactured by the Webley & Scott firm itself. These were primarily designed for use on RAF aircraft during WWII. It has distinctive locking lugs on the end of the barrel so it could be locked into a firing/locating bracket before being fired from the aircraft. This same feature is seen on many U.S. flare pistols of the time.

The pistol itself is of heavy steel construction, and a mixture of machined and cast parts. The barrel itself is cast and then machined on the front and inside, but not the sides, which gives it a rougher look. The left side of the pistol is marked No.4 MK1* over serial number 23966 . The same serial number is seen on the brass trigger guard, which is just below the Webley & Scott logo on the frame. The barrel and frame have numerous British proof marks, as well as the 1 1/2" size emblem.

The design of the pistol has an interesting hammer-block safety, which is engaged using the breech latch, or the slider on the top. Additionally, this example has a brass trigger guard and what appears to be a Nickel and Copper plated frame, which would indicate possible use in the Royal Navy. The amount of corrosion present seems to suggest this as well.
