Tour description
Dine like a florentine on this authentic food and wine experience..
Our Florence evening food tour provides a full introduction to Tuscan cuisine and wine with a local foodie as your guide. You’ll try wine, small plates, classic dishes, and of course gelato—all sprinkled with fascinating stories and a delightful city stroll.
From starters to gelato, enjoy a full Tuscan meal.
Your evening Florence food and wine tour starts in an easy-to-reach piazza in the Oltrarno neighborhood, a step or two off the well-trod tourist path. Just nearby is our first stop, where you’ll try pecorino toscano cheese, a selection of bruschette, and focaccia, all paired with a glass of Chianti Classico. Your guide will talk you through each bite, explaining how and why some of Italy’s key ingredients differ so much from one end of the boot to the other.
From there, we’ll take a stroll through picturesque Oltrarno, stopping at one of the famous Florentine wine windows for a glass of red or white.
Next up, it’s every Italian’s favorite time of day: aperitivo hour. Visit a local enoteca (wine bar) for a selection of regional charcuterie and another glass of wine.
After that, you’ll stop into one of our favorite trattorias in Florence for an authentic sit-down dinner starring the crown jewel of Tuscan cuisine: bistecca alla fiorentina, or Florentine steak!
Last but certainly not least, you’ll end your meal as the locals do: with a gelato, which was invented right here in Florence.
Dine with a local foodie and small group of 12 or fewer for an unforgettable evening out.
Throughout your Florence evening food tour, you’ll be accompanied by a foodie and storyteller as your guide. They’ll teach you about regional ingredients, seasonality, and why there’s no such thing as “Italian” food. Plus, with a small group, your experience will be relaxed and casual—like an evening out with friends you haven’t met yet.

This tour is in a great neighborhood. Lorenzo was an excellent guide and very entertaining too. Nice local experience. Beef was average. Chino Classico wine and snacks excellent. Other wines ok.

Lorenzo was engaging from the start! He made our tour interesting and fun and we learned so much about the culture and history of Florence. He had an extensive knowledge about wine and added fun details about Oltrano. Of course the food was great and substantial.

This was a great way to experience a part of Florence that most tourists don’t venture into. The Ontario is a fascinating neighborhood with great food and wine. Laura was a knowledgeable and entertaining guide. It was fun to eat with people I would not have met otherwise.

Like the people who travel with us, they have different backgrounds and interests – but they’re all so passionate about the place they call home, they choose to spend their free time sharing it with the like-minded travelers matched to them.
When the city lights begin dancing playfully on the Arno River and locals descend on the centuries-old streets, the atmosphere of Florence changes. Spend a glorious evening uncovering all the hotspots and hidden gems. With a local guide to help you cut out all the places catering solely to tourists, Florence night tours will give you a unique glimpse of the locals-only lifestyle
We want to give you the best night ever, so our night tours in Florence are 100% personalized to suit your pace. Don’t be fooled by Florence’s peaceful facade, because the city knows how to party! Take your pick between speaker-shaking clubs, crowded pubs, and loud live music venues. But if you like your evenings on the low-key side, there are plenty of amazing activities to fill your Florence night tours. Sip a Tuscan red at a cozy wine bar, have a drink at a sleek cocktail lounge, indulge in the Italian tradition of aperitivo, or simply take a moonlit stroll down quiet cobbled streets.
Florence is one of the most famous destinations in Italy, so it’s no wonder the city is packed with visitors year-round. Night tours in Florence are the ideal opportunity to explore the city’s iconic attractions and famous locations at your own speed. Maybe you’ll snap pictures of illuminated monuments like the Torre della Castagna and the San Lorenzo church, stroll across sparkling waters on a quiet Ponte Vecchio, or move between artistic treasures in the old city center before ending up where all Florence night tours should: with a glass of Tuscan wine at an atmospheric bar.

My Wife and I booked an 8-hour walking tour in Florence to celebrate our wedding Anniversary. Martina was our local host. The whole walking tour was laid back and we got to experience some of the local haunts including food and drink stops and a one-of-a-kind mosaic family workshop and saw from the outside most of the main sites around the centre of Florence. We would have maybe liked a bit more historical information but having a pleasant and knowledgeable local who tailored the tour according to our wishes, and just enjoying the ambience made this tour special. Thank you, Martina,

Statue of David Evening Tour
See michelangelo's david on a later tour of the accademia gallery with fewer crowds.
Want to see the famous Statue of David and explore the Accademia Gallery without the long wait and the big crowds? This tour lets you do just that! Skip the line and see one of Florence’s most iconic museums with all the stories and insights of an engaging local guide. Even better, this early evening tour gives you a quieter and more peaceful experience with far fewer tourists, and lets you connect more intimately with the gallery’s most celebrated artworks.
- Meeting point at Piazza Santissima Annunziata
- Meet your guide
- Accademia Gallery
- Gipsoteca Bartolini
- Florentine Gothic Hall
- Hall of the Prisoners
- Michelangelo's David
- End in the Accademia
After meeting your small group and expert guide in the early evening in nearby Piazza Santissima Annunziata , you’ll take a short walk to the Accademia Gallery, learning the museum’s rich history along the way. Once there, your skip-the-line tickets mean you can quickly head inside to start exploring.
With much smaller crowds at this time of day, you’ll be able to explore at a leisurely pace and really get up close and personal with the masterpieces and exhibits held within the gallery. The highlight, of course, is the chance for an unhurried, undisturbed viewing of Michelangelo’s iconic statue of David !
Accademia and David Evening Tour Description
Your 1.5-hour tour includes:
Skip-the-line evening tickets to the Accademia Gallery
After-hours access to the David and other exhibits
An engaging, English-speaking guide with art history expertise
A maximum group size of 18 people
Evening Tour of the Accademia Gallery
Your tour begins with skip-the-line entry to the Galleria dell'Accademia. After the Uffizi Gallery, the Accademia Gallery is the most visited museum in Florence. This means that long lines are usually a sure thing. Luckily, we reserve your Accademia tickets ahead of time, meaning that you'll skip the general admission line with our shorter access line.
Your guide is an expert in bringing the gallery's masterpieces and exhibits to life with entertaining stories about their history and meaning, and they'll help you connect more closely with the stunning artwork you'll see, including the most famous piece of all.
Halls of the Accademia
Aside from Michelangelo's David , there's plenty more to see within the Accademia Gallery's walls. Your guide will show you all of the most celebrated exhibits, including Gipsoteca Bartolini, which is a large hall covered floor to ceiling in sculptures. There, you'll be transported back in time to a period when the Accademia was a teaching gallery. In this hall, you can find countless works that aspiring Florentine artists crafted.
You'll also be able to visit the Museum of Musical Instruments, Florentine Gothic Hall, as well as the Hall of the Prisoners. In these galleries, you'll become acquainted with early forms of Gothic art that paved the way to the Italian Renaissance period.
Michelangelo's David
The highlight of the tour for most is the chance to see Michelangelo's iconic statue of David without the huge crowds that usually surround it. When you enter the gallery in which the David stands, you'll immediately notice his height, beautiful smooth surface, and famously determined expression.
Your guide will explain how Michelangelo heroically carved this masterpiece out of a block of Carrara marble that no other artist wanted to touch. Make sure you take a good look at David 's hands and feet, as they're out of proportion as the statue was supposed to be placed on top of the Florence Duomo.
In the summer months, the Accademia Gallery stays open until 10 pm. If you want to stay inside the Accademia Gallery after the conclusion of your evening tour, you can take your time and revisit the David or your other favorite works of art.

Statue of David Tour
Our guide was very knowledgeable. Very much worth it. Check-in was easy and everything was on schedule. On these tours the guide has a microphone and transmitter and each person gets a receiver and ear bud. Sometimes the surrounding noise from so many people made it difficult to hear our guide. I would suggest using double ear buds instead of single ear bud and maybe a better quality microphone for the guide that would help filter out more of the surrounding noise.
Only David Tour
Very basic tour. Tour guide knowledgeable of Michelangelo’s process for sculpting and of David statue, but no discussion of anything else in museum. And her description of who David as a Bible person did not match the Bible. So basically 45 min line to get in and then about 45 min discussion of sculpting process and walking around the statue. Would not recommend unless your only way to get in to see David.

15 Things To Do In Florence At Night – A Local’s Advice
Florence at night is a completely different city than during the day. The daytime can be glorious, under the Tuscan sun , but it can also be hot , crowded and rumoroso (loud).
When my husband and I want to soak up Florence, we pick one of these 15 things to do in Florence at night.
While you can do some of these activities if you have kids, most of these things to do in Florence at night are simpler and more enjoyable (in our opinion!) kid-free.
Here’s our list of 15 favorite things to do in Florence at night.
Table of Contents
Take A Walk Along The Arno River
In the heat of summer or the middle of winter, an evening stroll along the banks of Florence’s river is a nice way to pass an hour or so.
If you’re in a sporty mood, you can walk (or run!) on the gravel and dirt paths on the Oltrarno (meaning, other side of the Arno – the opposite side of the river from the historic center with the Duomo). In the evening, the paths are full of locals running, walking, and cycling, so it’s a fun way to mingle with Florentines and get some exercise.
If you’re dressed in non-sporty clothing (maybe even new purchases from Florence’s shops), go for a romantic walk along the river. You can do a loop from Ponte alle Grazie (beautiful views of Ponte Vecchio with the sunset in the background if you time it right) along the river to Ponte Amerigo Vespucci, cross the bridge, and make your way back to the Ponte alle Grazie. It’s a little over 3 kilometers and takes around 45 minutes (without stops). Want to make it shorter? Cross over any of the bridges you pass along the way.
Tip – While it’s a nice spot for a walk or jog in the morning or daytime, I don’t recommend hanging around the Parco delle Cascine trails at night. There are lights in some places, but if you don’t know the area well, I’d avoid it. It’s a huge park and it’s easy to lose your way or end up in a dark and possibly unsafe area.
Head Over To The San Frediano Neighborhood
San Frediano is lively (but not wild!) in the evenings. There are a lot of restaurants, bars, and cafes, some of which spill onto the streets. The evening begins with aperitivo and you’ll find all ages sipping glasses of wine and Aperol spritz inside cosy bars, standing on the sidewalk, or sitting at an outside café.
Lonely Planet even listed the neighborhood as one of the 10 Coolest Neighborhoods in the World in 2017.
For Florence’s best sushi, head to Momoyama (and have aperitivo next door at its sister sake bar, Kawaii .
La Cite Libreria is a library/café/bar and has a chill vibe and cozy atmosphere. Locals and visitors line up for gelato at the neighborhood’s two best gelaterie , Gelateria La Carraia and La Sorbettiera .
Tip – This neighborhood is also worth a visit during the day. It, and the nearby San Niccolo neighborhood are full of artisan shops and great places for a bite to eat.
Get A Gelato
Most agree that Florence is the birthplace of gelato. ‘Study’ your history by sampling some! And it doesn’t need to be a summer evening – you’ll see Florentines eating gelato even in December .
Gelato Flavors To Try While You’re In Florence:
- buontalenti – buontalenti
- ricotta e fichi – ricotta & figs
- pistacchio – pistachio
- nocciola – hazelnut
- melone – cantaloupe
- cocomero – watermelon
Tip – Avoid gelato that’s piled high in the displays or that’s very colorful! Neither are signs of high-quality gelato.
Read about my Favorite Gelaterie in Florence
Take A Cooking Class
This one requires a little planning ahead, but there are plenty of cooking classes available in the city center. We love Jacopo and Anna’s cooking class (it’s great with kids too!). You’re cooking in a real kitchen and it feels like you’re spending your evening cooking with friends.
Learn how to make ravioli, how to cook arista alla Fiorentina (Florentine-style roasted pork loin), or a special Italian dessert. You can find classes tailored to your cooking level and menu preferences, like this gluten-free cooking class .
Have A Sunset Aperitivo
Try a spritz or a negroni at Grand Hotel Baglioni’s B-Roof , sip a trendy cocktail at The Westin Excelsior’s fashionable Sesto or enjoy a glass of Tuscan wine with a view of the Florence skyline at Empireo at the Plaza Hotel Lucchesi.
Be sure to reserve a table with a view (it’s not guaranteed!). The fee hotels charge outside visitors is hefty, but it’s worth the splurge for the views!
Some aperitivi also have finger foods and snacks. Large spreads are increasingly common and have their own name – apericena – a combo of aperitivo and cena (dinner).
Tip – If you want the view but not the price tag, pick up some wine, cheese, and olives at a supermarket and check out the suggestion below. See our Guide to Italian Grocery Stores + 5 Important Things to Know !
Walk Up To Piazzale Michelangelo
As the sun sets, this large piazza overlooking the city is a prime spot for viewing bella Firenze . Don’t go expecting a quiet, romantic moment – it’s a crowded spot in the evening.
If you’re looking for a more tranquillo setting – walk a little bit further up the hill, to San Miniato al Monte and its equally incredible view. If you time it right, you can hear the monks chanting the evening prayers (currently 18:30 but check here for the latest info). If you want to check out the church (and not just the view of Florence), make sure you check the website for closing hours.
Climbing up to Piazzale Michelangelo (and San Miniato al Monte) is a nice little workout. If that’s not your thing (or you’re decked out in a fancy dress and high heels), you can also take the bus to the top.
Read our Complete Guide to Visiting Piazzale Michelangelo
Window Shop On Via De’ Tornabuoni
Gucci, Ferragamo, Fendi, Prada, Armani, Bulgari, Versace, Tods, – check. This pedestrian street is the place for high-end Italian designer shopping (and there are plenty of other international fashion powerhouses).
Stroll down the street for some window shopping when the shops are closed.
When your eyes are tired, satisfy your tastebuds with aperitivo (the truffle panini are worth the stop!) at Procacci , or have an elegant evening at the Cantinetta di Antinori or a nearby Michelin-starred restaurant .
Tip – Procacci also has a wall full of specialty food items that make perfect souvenirs.
Have Dinner In A Lively Piazza
You can’t go wrong with a place like Piazza della Passera and its surrounding side streets like via del Pavone. The restaurants’ tables spill out onto the piazza and streets and the scene can feel like a movie. Make a reservation if you’re set on a certain restaurant or want a great outdoor table.
We’re loving Osteria del Pavone, with its artsy interior and mix of classic and unique dishes.
Tip – Skip dessert and get a gelato at Gelateria della Passera, an excellent (tiny!) gelateria located right in the piazza.
Climb To The Top Of The Duomo
Most people think of climbing to the top of the Duomo or Giotto’s belltower as a daytime ‘touristy’ activity.
Climbing the 463 steps to the top of the Duomo is a whole new experience at night. Not only can you check out the frescos on the inside of the dome – you also have a magical view of Florence and the twinkling lights of the city.
Get a close up look at the Duomo by climbing the bell tower next door. There are more than 400 steps to the top, but you can catch your breath at platforms along the way.
Tip – Skip these climbs if you’re claustrophobic or have heart or knee problems. The walkways up to the top are maintenance staircases and are steep and narrow. There are no elevators!
Sample Tuscan Wines
Florence is surrounded by prime wine territory in all directions – Settle onto a stool at a wine bar at Le Volpi e L’Uva or Enoteca Pitti Gola and sample Tuscany’s incredible wines.
The region is home to the famous Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano , and Super Tuscan wines.
Check out some of the lesser-known but equally satisfying Tuscan wines like Morellino di Scansano and Vernaccia di San Gimignano.
Listen To Music On The Ponte Vecchio
Florence’s iconic Ponte Vecchio is worth a visit during the day when the bridge’s gold shops are open and the wares are on display (we love Vettori and even got our wedding rings there!). The jewelry is beautiful and the shops are such an important part of the city’s history.
In the evening, the shops are closed and boarded up, but the crowds come back for sunset. Often, a musician or group of musicians will play. It can be crowded but still a great experience.
Do An Evening Museum Tour
Many of Florence’s museum ‘biggies’ offer evening tours. You can combine aperitivo with an evening stop at:
- The Accademia and its famous David statue looks different after a glass or two of prosecco.
- The Uffizi Galleries have an elegant and calm atmosphere in the evening.
- Palazzo Vecchio is worth an evening visit to see the map room and Michelangelo’s Genius of Victory without the crowds.
- Palazzo Strozzi often has interesting modern exhibits to counter all of the Renaissance art you saw during the day.
See A Movie At The Cinema
Odeon Firenze is located just off Piazza della Signoria and it will probably be the most gorgeous cinema you’ve ever been to.
It dates to 1922 and found its destiny as a cinema after the original plans to create a luxury hotel were scrapped.
It’s hosted many international stars – and you could be next! Grab a snack, settle into your cushy seat and enjoy current films, replays of classics, and foreign movies.
Look For Street Art
Florence’s most famous street artist is Clet . Originally from France, he’s made his home in Florence and has a studio in the San Niccolò neighborhood.
Many of his works are part of street signs and have political messages.
You can download an app from his website and go on a search for some of his art that’s located throughout the city center.
Toast The Night In A Bar, Lounge, Or Nightclub
Admittedly, my husband and I don’t do this anymore. We have to get home to our little ones.
But, if you’re visiting Florence, stopping by a trendy bar or nightclub can be a fun and entertaining cultural experience.
Colle Bereto – is ‘contemporary, sophisticated, and lively’ and whenever we pass by in the evening, it looks like a great spot for people-watching and passing the night away. It also has a clientele over the age of 20 (which isn’t the case for many lounges and nightclubs in Florence).
There you have it – our list of our favorite things to do in Florence at night. I hope you’ve found something on this list for your evening out in Florence.
Whatever you decide to do, please remember to be safe – don’t do anything you wouldn’t do in your hometown at night!
The historic center is very walkable, but if you need to, you can call a taxi (of you’re your restaurant call one for you). Women traveling solo from 21:00 to 02:00 have a 10% discount on taxi fare.
Florence and Night FAQ
Yes! Check out my Florence Directory for my up-to-date recommendations for guides and tours.
If you’re in the historic center, you may be a quick, easy walk away. However, you can always call a taxi at +39 055.4242 or +39 055.4390.

To witness the charms of Florence at night is a truly special experience.
Trust me, if you thought the city was a knockout during the day, just wait until you see the Florence skyline sparkle with twinkling lights as the sunset paints the evening sky.
However, if you’re somehow convinced that “day time is play time” and nightfall is for sleeping, then it’s my mission to open your mind to a little night magic, Florentine style!
So whether you’re a natural-born night owl or seeking some amusement after a day in Florence (beyond admiring the Duomo views from your hotel room ), you’re in the right place!

Florence at Night: Best Sunset Activities
1. watch the sunset from the best viewpoints in the city.
The Florence skyline is pretty remarkable at sunset, especially if you can snag a spot at one of the top places in town, such as by the Ponte Vecchio Bridge.
In fact, seeking out at least one sunrise or sunset while you’re in the city is a Florence travel tip you shouldn’t overlook!
While the sunset will be special from pretty much anywhere, here are some of the most spectacular sunset spots:
- Ponte Vecchio Bridge
- Piazzale Michelangelo
- Atop the Duomo
- Fort Belvedere
- Boboli Gardens
- Bardini Garden
2. Sip & Savor on a Sunset Wine Tasting Walking Tour
How does the idea of sampling some fine Italian wine while watching the sun go down hit ya?
If you’re nodding and smiling, then this next activity will be right up your alley! A wine tasting walking tour will lead you to some of Florence’s most beautiful sights, from the Ponte Vecchio to the Oltrarno District, which come alive with twinkling lights at night.
Along the way, you’ll stop to enjoy both red and white wines – including Tuscany’s trademark Chianti – paired with tasty locally-prepared bites.
This enchanting tour will end at the magnificent Duomo where you’ll toast to the good life with your final glass – and enjoy a delicious plate of fresh crostini!
Satisfy Your Appetite While in Florence at Night
3. grab some drinks & appetizers at a rooftop bar.
Enjoying the sunset with an aperitif is the Florentine way.
And not to worry – there’s certainly no shortage of incredible rooftop bars with jaw-dropping views of the city. In fact, I’ve dedicated an entirely separate blog post to just that!
(Well, that, and all of the other awesome places to check out Florence’s amazing skyline views .)
So make sure to hop over and check that out before you go so you don’t miss one!
4. Join an Aperitivo Tasting Before Dinner
If you’d like to take things up a notch, you should consider joining a more formal aperitivo tasting. This 2.5-hour tour will introduce you to fabulous Tuscan wineries in some of Florence’s wonderful under-the-radar neighborhoods.
During the tasting, you’ll enjoy a wine and food pairing with helpful commentary from a local sommelier.
5. Savor a Romantic Dinner
While wine and cocktails are certainly wonderful, it would be a sin not to savor all of the delicious food while in Italy! Fortunately, Florence has plenty of wonderful options to choose from for a satisfying dinner.
Here are some top recommended restaurants in the city to put on your radar:
Traditional Tuscan/Florentine Classics:
- Trattoria Sergio Gozzi
- Trattoria Mario
Tuscan Focusing on Seasonality:
- Il Santo Bevitore
Fusion of Traditional Tuscan & Modern Elements:
- Borgo San Jacopo
Steakhouse:
- Regina Bistecca
- Cestello Ristoclub
- L’Angolo del Mare
- Fishing Lab alle Murate
6. ...Or Link Up with Other Travelers for a Restaurant & Bar-Hopping Tour!
If you’d prefer to connect with other travelers and dine in more of a group setting, you may wish to consider a fun restaurant and bar-hopping tour.
This experience will provide an introduction to several authentic local neighborhoods and some of the best wine bars and restaurants in the city.
As you uncover local delights with the help of a guide, you’ll sample Tuscan charcuterie and local wines while learning how Florence gained its recognition as one of the foodie capitals of the world.
Finish off the evening with the grand finale, bistecca Fiorentina, before indulging in a dessert wine and a delicious gelato.
7. Join an Evening Walking Tour with an All-You-Can-Eat-Buffet
If an all-you-can-eat buffet sounds a bit indulgent, how about balancing it with an evening walking tour?
This budget-friendly guided experience is the perfect opportunity to mingle with locals, learn about some of the most significant architectural sites in the city (like the Duomo and the Palazzo Vecchio, to name a few), and savor a buffet of Italian wonders!
8. Join a Fun Pub Crawl
Is a relaxed pub crawl experience more your speed?
Then the Original Florence Pub Crawl should fit the bill. You’ll have the chance to link up with other travelers, enjoy some fun games and free shots, and experience the best bars that Florence has to offer!
9. Hunt Down the Best Gelato in the City
It wouldn’t be right to gush about tasty Tuscan cuisine without crediting one of the most delicious European desserts , gelato!
So…are you salivating yet?
If not, perhaps this picture will get the ol’ salivary glands going…
PRO TIP : When hunting down the best gelato in Florence (or anywhere in Italy for that matter), you want to make sure of two things:
- That the appearance isn’t overly vibrant and colorful (this signifies artificial dyes)
- That it isn’t piled super high (this speaks to a lack of freshness)
Personally, I’d love to tell you exactly where you can get the best gelato in the city, but sadly, I haven’t tried them all (though that would make for a really fun experiment and future blog post, no?)
Then again, part of the fun is the thrill of the chase, as they say! So why not follow your tongue and go on a fun gelato hunt?
P.S. If you do, please let me know about your findings in the comments! It can never hurt to keep a running list of the best gelato spots…
In any case, as long as you follow my two pointers above, it’s hard to go wrong with gelato in Florence. Personally, I can attest to the deliciousness of the gelato at Gelateria La Carraia .
But again, you should be good to go as long as you keep my insight in mind and avoid touristy areas with inflated prices.
In general, as you travel around Italy , it’s best to avoid gelato shops near super famous monuments.
10. ...Or Enjoy Your Gelato on an E-bike Tour!
If you’d prefer to “earn” your gelato, why not experience Florence at night with an electric bike tour?
(Side Note: I’d like to go on record as saying that gelato isn’t something you need to earn; by all means, treat yourself! I’m just saying that if a bike ride helps you feel more justified in eating gelato, I can totally jive with that, too.)
Plus, if your legs are tired after a long day, an electric bike is a super efficient and fun way to skirt around the city and take in all the gorgeous monuments at night.
…And then of course there’s the whole treating-yourself-to-gelato-after-it thing!
Enjoy Live Music in Florence at Night
11. swing into a jazz club.
If jazz is your jam, you’ll find plenty to keep you busy in Florence at night.
Whether you’re getting cozy in the local-favorite Florence Jazz Club or looking for some other awesome jazz venues throughout the city, you’re sure to find something that fits the bill!
12. ...Or Kick Back at a Nightclub
Alternatively, if nightclubs are more your style, you’ll find plenty of places to enjoy the Florence nightlife scene.
Whether you want to enjoy a few drinks, dance the night away, or anything in between, you definitely won’t be bored in this lively city!
Fun Ways to Get Around Florence at Night
13. zip around florence on a night segway tour.
Does the idea of covering a lot of ground quickly (and feeling the evening breeze run through your hair) sound appealing?
Then you should consider joining a night Segway tour! Tour groups are intentionally kept small to help foster a more personalized experience.
On this 2.5-hour tour, you’ll hit some of the best spots in the city, including Republic Square, Signoria Square, and Brunelleschi’s Dome, while enjoying some other noteworthy landmarks in between.
14. Experience Florence by Boat on an Evening River Cruise
For a uniquely stunning perspective of the city, you have to experience Florence by boat!
A cruise along the Arno River is one of the most peaceful ways to end the day in Florence. As you glide along, you’ll sip a delicious aperitivo and learn the ancient secrets of the river as told by an expert guide.
If the novelty of hopping aboard a vintage barchetto and cruising along on a romantic gondola ride appeals to you, you’ll relish your time as a seafaring sunset chaser!
Additional Florence Activities for Night Owls
15. pay an early evening visit to a museum or art gallery.
With a city as rich in history as Florence is, you’ll likely want to pay a visit to at least one museum during your stay.
While afternoon tends to be the popular time amongst museum-hoppers, it can also be a much less enjoyable experience when you’re bumping elbows with tourists!
Fortunately, you have a couple of options if you’d prefer an early evening museum visit:
- Uffizi Gallery – Art gallery open until 6:30 PM daily (except Monday)
- Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Firenze – Archaeological museum open from Tuesday – Sunday until 7PM (only until 2:30PM Saturday – Monday)
- Museo di Palazzo Vecchio – History museum open until 7PM daily (except Thursday)
16. Take in a Film at a Cinema Under the Stars
If you’re fortunate enough to visit Florence during the summer, you can take advantage of an outdoor film night!
I mean, what better way to take in the night sky than to look up at it from a giant movie screen?
Although 2022 cinema locations and dates look as though they’re TBD for the time being, you can at least keep up with the Cinema in Villa schedule here . This is the event page for film nights at Villa Bardini.
17. Explore Famous Streets & Landmarks without the Crowds
One of the best things about exploring Florence at night is avoiding the typical daytime crowds.
From claustrophobia-inducing squares to over-touristed monuments, the mid-day pandemonium can quickly wear thin in a city as popular as Florence.
Fortunately, you won’t have to deal with this chaos come nightfall (at least not to that degree). This is why I recommend saving some of the more popular spots for the evening, when you can enjoy them without everyone else in town clamoring for a picture.
Here are some spots to consider visiting in the evening:
- Florence Academia & the Statue of David – Open daily until 6:15PM (except Mondays)
- Palazzo Vecchio – Open daily until 11PM (except Thursdays) from April – September
- Palazzo Strozzi (Strozzi Palace) – Open daily until 8PM (11PM on Thursdays)
18. Tap into Florence’s Haunted History with an Interactive City Exploration Game
If you’re at all familiar with my American Horror Story obsession (and my horror genre obsession in general), it should be no surprise that I love a good haunted city. So of course I have to include a spooky recommendation on this list, just in case you’re anything like me.
This fun, interactive game is a bit more like the game of Clue , as you’ll be solving mysteries and unlocking stories right from your phone. Plus, you’ll learn everything from ancient spells to the mysterious spirits and skeletons of Florence.
Although this is arguably one of the more unusual things to do in Florence, it can be a great way to stumble upon some interesting spots you may otherwise have never seen!
Simply decide whether you’d like to solve clues along with a group of fellow travelers or whether you’d prefer to split up and make a fun competition of it!
Also, if haunted histories and the paranormal are of interest, I highly recommend checking out my 3-day Savannah itinerary . This gorgeous Georgia gem is one of the most haunted cities in America!
19. Take an Evening Stroll Along the Arno River
There’s just something about strolling around Florence at night that’s so darn romantic!
Trust me, even if you’re visiting as a solo traveler, I’m sure you’ll feel the magic in the air once that sun starts to set.
Personally, I felt transported to the set of a Woody Allen film!
In any case, it’s hard to deny the beauty of the gorgeous Arno River. As the most famous river in Central Italy and the second most significant one in all of Italy (after the Tiber), the Arno runs through Florence and Pisa, dividing Florence into two separate parts.
Spanning an impressive 150 miles, the river offers numerous viewpoints for visitors to stop, savor, and capture the magic.
So if you’re all about free things to do in Florence, my personal recommendation is to head toward the Ponte Vechhio and stroll along the Lungarno delle Grazie. This lovely riverwalk area overlooks Pointe alle Grazie and the Ponte Vechhio. It’s truly magnificent at sunset and photos don’t even do it justice.
20. Practice Your Nighttime Photography
If you’re looking to level up your nighttime photography, Florence is the perfect place to practice.
In the evenings when crowds thin, you can venture into sparsely populated city squares or hike up to some of the best views of Florence and snap away to your heart’s content.
While we’re on the topic of photography, make sure to take a peek at my full photography equipment guide for all of my best recommendations (including exactly what my husband and I shoot with).
I hope these activity recommendations have inspired you to experience the magical city of Florence at night! It’s truly one of the best times to appreciate the unique beauty and history of this incredible city without crowds – and with cotton candy skies and starry nights as your backdrop!

An evening in florence.
Your Evening Tour of Florence will start in Piazza delle Signoria . The history of Florence comes alive with stories of events like the infamous Bonfire of the Vanities.
Even in the evening, the square is full of life: locals meeting, children playing on the Loggia dei Lanzi , visitors stopping to see where Michelangelo’s David originally stood (and to snap a pic with the copy). If it’s still open, peak inside the courtyard of the imposing Palazzo Vecchio , then wander past the Uffizi Gallery and down to the River Arno .
Over the Arno
You’ll cross the river at its narrowest point on the famous Ponte Vecchio. On the other side, you’ll discover the Oltrarno neighborhood and the Medici’s Pitti Palace. You’ll catch glimpses of the lovely Boboli Gardens as you walk, tempting you to come back. Many forget this quieter part of Florence and miss its treasures like the first work by the young Michelangelo at the Basilica di Santo Spirito.

- 3 Itineraries to see Florence by Night
3 Evening and Night Time Itineraries in Florence
Bring the City Alive at Night
It's easy to find an itinerary that will take you through the beauty of downtown Florence during the day, pointing out the famous monuments, the glamorous museums, and the elegant palazzos .
But in the summer heat , the idea of venturing outside of the cool interior of your hotel, restaurant or museum is not enticing? Or after the last weekend in October, which signals the rolling back of time, and sunset descends with lightning speed and you are looking to fill those long evening hours?
Here are three possible itineraries for a wander around the city once the sun has gone down and other tourists start to desert the streets for their hotels and B&B's. You will find a map at the end of the article, just click on the name of the itinerary you wish to follow and it will pinpoint the road and the highlights along the way.
We may suggest these itineraries for escaping the summer heat, however, with a few minor changes (take your refreshment indoors), these three ideas become the perfect way to extend your day and make the most of your limited time in Florence in any season.
The starting point is the same for all three (Piazza Michelangelo) because before, during and after sunset, there is probably no better place to start a panoramic tour in the evening. Just a thought, though you can walk up to the piazza, make it easy: catch bus number 13 and get off at the square. When possible, I tried to be precise with road names, but sometimes the fun is getting just a little bit lost while wandering around.
Itinerary # 1
Length: 4.9 km with Walking Time about 90 min
From Piazzale Michelangelo , (with the city to your back) stroll to the left, down the wide sidewalk of the Viale Michelangelo downwards along the main road and you will end up in Piazza Ferrucci. This square is named after Francesco Ferrucci, also known as Francesco Ferruccio , a Florentine war hero from the 1500's. A stop on the bridge Ponte S. Niccolò will give you a brilliant perspective of the city skyline (see if you can identify Santa Croce , Palazzo Vecchio , Giotto's Bell Tower and the Duomo ).
In the summer, you can make a "pit stop" along the river at two areas on either side of the bridge, where you can sit and enjoy a beer, some music, and watch the river as it meanders through the city . Decide where when you are crossing the bridge S. Niccolò: on the right hand side, along Lungarno del Tempio, watch the water flow from the garden chairs on the bank (at il Tempio ) or, on the left side, there is a summer bar that features live music and a big screen for those exciting summer football matches (at the Fiorino sull'Arno , along Lungarno Pecori Giraldi).
From here, continue straight ahead along Viale Amendola to one of the few still standing (and newly restored) "doors" to the city, Porta alla Croce. This entrance to the city was built in the late 13th century and standing in the center of the considerably newer (1876) Piazza Beccaria . This busy intersection circles around the ancient entrance that was founded along the fourth set of walls that surrounded Florence (the walls were destroyed in the 19th century).
Once you have crossed the road under the arches of the "porta", I suggest you head towards one of the "happening" streets in Florence: Borgo la Croce . With small cafes, restaurants, bars and other meet up places lining the road, you can visit a few of our favorite gelato shops , stop for a drink at one of our favorite happy hour spots ( look at Donna's 2nd choice ) or simply enjoy the thriving outdoor nightlife. This works well in all types of weather!
This route will take you right next to the Loggia del Pesce (fish market), commissioned by Duke Cosimo I de' Medici to Giorgio Vasari. These newly restored nine arches separated with 8 " tondi " in blue and white terracotta depict different types of fish and once stood in Piazza della Repubblica . It was dismantled in the late 1800's with the remodeling of Florence and only put on display again in 1955 in Piazza Ciompi.
I suggest that you follow via Pietra Piana until you come to Borgo degli Albizi , enjoying the little stores and busy streets. Once you find Via del Proconsolo, turn left (skip the Duomo, for now, you'll come back to it soon) and then right on via di Dante Alighieri to walk in front of the museum at Dante's house .
What many don't know , according to official documents, is that his real home was just a tad bit further down (on the right) directly across from the Torre della Castagna which was already standing in the year 1038 (on the left-hand side).
Take a left in front of his "real" house at Piazza San Martino and follow via dei Magazzini which will open into Piazza Signoria and the important Palazzo Vecchio , next to the Uffizi and Loggia dei Lanzi. Take a moment to enjoy the romantic atmosphere, listen to the street musicians before following the road via dei Calzaiuoli, passing by Orsanmichele to finish in front of the Duomo .
Itinerary #2
Length: 3.8 km & Walking Time about 60 min
This itinerary has you winding down the paths underneath Piazza Michelangelo. You might need to make use of the torch or flashlight on your cell phone to navigate the trail, with your descent passing next to the newly restored "Rampe del Poggio di San Niccolò" ending in front of the Tower of San Niccolò. These ramps were built between 1872 (the year following the transfer of the capital from Florence to Rome) and 1876.
This path is perfect for those who want to live a bit of the nightlife of Florence: to the right and to the left of the tower you will find a collection of little restaurants: touristy but at the same time not too touristy that Florentines themselves shun them. You will find a selection of menus that vary providing outdoor seating (and heaters for the winter!).
Once you have enjoyed your stop, continue your walk parallel to the Arno River towards Ponte Vecchio , turning right at the first bridge for some great photo opportunities of the bridge. Once on the other side of the river, veer to the right to find the Biblioteca Nazionale . It is here that the Mud Angels had the most memorable impact after the November 1966 flood when the library became the sad symbol of the massive destruction wrought by the rising river waters. Founded in 1714, it is one of the largest libraries in Italy and one of the most important in Europe. It is not open for tourist visits, so you can only really appreciate it from the outside .
Turn back towards the city center on Via dei Benci and take your first right towards the square of Santa Croce where the Calcio Storico is played out in the shadow of the amazing church of Santa Croce and the imposing statue of Dante gazes down with a disapproving glare ( maybe his team wasn't winning? )
On the far right-hand corner of the piazza, with the church to your back, you will see a plaque which indicates the different flood levels that the Arno River reached in the past through the centuries.
Head straight down via Torta, where you can take a right on via Isola delle Stinche towards a refreshing gelato ( Vivoli ) . Leaving the gelato shop behind, you backtrack along via Isola delle Stinche past Via Torta to take a right on via dell'Anguillara, which becomes via della Condotta and then via di Porta Rosa. Just enjoy the neighborhood as you head back into the heart of the city center.
You will find the (now empty) Mercato Nuovo and the Porcellino (little pig), a bronze copy of - a Roman copy of - a Hellenistic marble statue that Pope Pius IV donated to Cosimo I in 1560. That is a mouth full! Tradition has it that with a pat on the nose, your return to Florence is assured.
The complete procedure for a return to Florence (or good luck) would be to put a coin in the mouth of the boar after having rubbed the nose. If the coin falls through the grate where the water drops, your luck will increase.
What you see before you now is actually a copy of the original bronze statue by Piero Tacco (yes, another copy! The original is in Museum Bardini ).
With this space empty for the evening (no leather bags or silk scarf stands), this is a good time to look for a circular stone on the floor of the market which symbolizes the spot where the " carroccio " would stand — which is not easy to find when the stands with leather, silk, and gadgets are on display. The carroccio was a four-wheeled wagon from medieval times which served as a "war altar" , holding the town standard (banner) and drawn by oxen and this is where priests held services before battle.
Take your time strolling down Via Calimala toward Piazza della Repubblica before ending in front of the Duomo.
Itinerary #3
Length: 3.9 km & Walking Time about 70 min
With Piazzale Michelangelo to your back, you will head towards your right. FYI: look up you will see the illuminated church of San Miniato . Right after the bar/cafe at the corner of the Piazzale (before San Miniato), there are steps called "Scalea del Monte alle Croci" which take you down past the Rose Garden . Follow these steps down to the Porta San Miniato to what is often known as the "Bohemian corner of Florence".
Here, you will find a mix of bars ( il Rifrullo and others), the art studio of Clet Abraham (the artist behind the funky street signs) and a few cafés which are practically an institution ( Negroni Cocktail Restaurant ). This last place is named after the Negroni, a cocktail whose origins are said to originate right here in Florence in the year 1919 and named after Count Camillo Negroni.
Another "institution" would be the nearby pizza place ( I Tarocchi Pizzeria ) established in 1979 with what was once considered an innovative menu (pizza and spaghetti at the same place) and decor (paper placemats with the menu printed on them).
All this surrounds Piazza Demidoff, named after Count Demidoff, a Russian statesman, and diplomat who immigrated to Italy becoming a prominent patron, philanthropist, and businessman in Florence. The gazebo-covered marble statue was placed here during Florence's attempt to update itself as the capital of Italy in the late 1800's by offering more parks and modern architecture to the city.
Walk along the river, Lungarno Torrigiani, from where you can see the Ponte Vecchio , and the Uffizi museum . Take a quick walk to the middle of the Ponte Vecchio for a few photo opportunities and then backtrack up Via de' Guicciardini to view the magnificent Palazzo Pitti . The large stone paved slope in front of the palace is a great place to do a bit of summer stargazing ... even if it isn't the darkest corner of the city .
Via dei Velluti, in front of Palazzo Pitti, is a little road that will take you winding through some of the quaint back streets in the Oltrarno. I suggest that on this itinerary you take a right on via Toscanella towards Piazza della Passera, a small, charming corner of Florence where you can opt to enjoy the tranquil environment. But I suggest that you hold out for a gelato!
Continue towards Via dello Sprone and Piazza dei Frescobaldi to continue strolling along the river until you come to La Gelateria Carraia ( by the bridge alla Carraia, a personal favorite! )
With your stomach full, cross the bridge and walk back towards Ponte Vecchio until you come to the next bridge (Ponte Santa Trinità, one bridge before Ponte Vecchio) and turn left onto Via de' Tornabuoni : this street is synonymous with fashion in Florence.
This road will lead you to Palazzo Strozzi where you will turn right and head towards Piazza Repubblica and several historic cafes - many with live music all year long (and if you want a cocktail or more live music, there is Hard Rock Cafe to your left at the far corner of the square). Last stop, the Duomo , which is truly impressive at night with its white, pink and green marble shining under the moon.

It has been more than 25 years since I took my first steps in Italy and I still haven’t found a good reason to leave. Between the food, the culture, the history, the art, the landscapes … did I mention the food? I have become a lifelong student. It didn't take long to learn that Italians all have stories that long to be told; stories that paint a picture of how hard work produces character, how life is made of ups and downs and how good it feels to laugh.

How to get BBC Proms 2024 tickets, plus this year’s schedule and dates
Everything you need to know about the 2024 edition of one of the world’s best classical music festivals
Anyone who’s ever stepped inside the Royal Albert Hall will understand that it can’t be filled with just any old music – it needs scale and drama. And every year it gets exactly that with the BBC Proms, one of London’s best-loved and most dazzling cultural festivals.
The Promenade Concerts (as they’re also known) have taken place in the RAH throughout the summer since way back in 1895. They’ve been organised by the BBC since 1927.
The likes of Pete Tong, Stormzy, Kylie Minogue and even Dame Judi Dench have all made appearances at the Proms in the past, and this year the likes of Florence + the Machine and Sam Smith are set to perform. It’s not all orchestral renditions of classic classical pieces of music (although there will be plenty of that, too).
2024’s season of BBC Proms is kicking off in mid-July. Want to bag yourself a ticket? We’ve got all the info on tickets, dates and the schedule: here is everything you need to know about the BBC Proms 2024.
When is the BBC Proms?
The proms are running throughout the summer, from Friday July 19 until Saturday September 14 2024 .
When do Proms tickets go on sale?
Season passes for the Proms go on sale at 9am on Thursday May 16 and general tickets go on sale at 9am on Saturday May 18 (but this doesn’t include Last Night at the Proms – these will likely be allocated by ballot).
They’ll be available from the Royal Albert Hall website here .
What’s this year’s schedule?
More than 90 concerts will be taking place over the 58-day festival, most of which are at the Royal Albert Hall. First Night at the Proms will feature performances by BBC Singers, Symphony Chorus and Symphony Orchestra, as well as a First Night debut for conductor Elim Chan.
Other highlights include Everybody Dance: The Sound of Disco (Jul 20) where hits by Chic, Gloria Gaynor, Diana Ross, Boney M and more will be brought to live with an orchestra, Florence + The Machine – Symphony of Lungs (Sep 11) where Florence Welch and conductor Jules Buckley lead celebrations of her BRIT Award-winning debut album, and of course, the Last Night at the Proms (Sep 14), which is apparently the world’s biggest classical music party, celebrating the end of 2024’s season.
You can look at the list of events on the BBC’s Proms calendar here , or view all the performers and conductors or the composers . There’s also a full festival guide, which you can learn more about here .
