Fonseca (born May 29, 1979) is the stage name of Colombian Latin pop and tropicana-themed pop musician, Juan Fernando Fonseca, who rose to national popularity with his self-titled, debut album – hailing from Bogotá, Colombia.

From a young age Colombian Juan Fernando Fonseca had developed a passion for music, a passion which was encouraged by his parents. At the age of 12, the budding musician recorded his debut song which he later sold to friends and family. Fonseca subsequently attended Pontificia Universidad Javeriana studying music as well as the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he expanded his musical and performance skills. Upon returning to Colombia, Fonseca recorded his debut album “Bomba de Tiempo”, which he flogged door-to-door and in small bars.

In 1977 the singer-songwriter and guitarist met Colombian musician José Gaviria who attempted to get him signed to the U.S. label Sonolux. The deal remained in the works until 2002, when Fonseca signed a three album deal with the EMI Capitol imprint Líderes Entertainment Group. The singer’s official self-titled, debut album was subsequently released in February 2002 in Colombia, and earned its international release three years later in 2005. Spawning the singles “Mangangué”, “Noche de Carnaval”, “Sueño”, and “Confiésame”, the album is epitomised by the tropipop sound, popularised by Carlos Vives’ musical output. The success of the album led the singer-songwriter to tour alongside Shakira and Juanes, and raised his profile to new, international levels.

Released in May 2006, Fonseca’s sophomore full-length, “Corazón” saw the singer build on his success with the album rising to No. 7 on the U.S. Tropical Albums Chart. Combining the thematically Latin vallenato, bullerenuge and tambora rhythms with Western influenced pop/rock, the record was well-received, aided by the singles “Como Me Mira”, the Latin Grammy-winning “Te Mando Flores”, and “Hace Tiempo”. Led by the singles “Enrédame”, “Arroyito”, “Paraíso”, and “Estar Lejos”, Fonseca’s third studio album “Gratitud” appeared in May 2008. The full-length “Ilusión” followed in 2011, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Album.

Juan Fernando Fonseca better known by his surname onstage is one of Colombia's most respected international performers and musicians. Studying at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Fonseca has always been determined to realise his dream to be a celebrated and successful musician and this reality was realised following on from the release of his debut self titled album in 2002.

Since then he has recorded and released three more albums and his following has expanded across countries much to the delight of the artist who gets to travel all over with his music. There is a look of complete and utter delight as he steps onto stage and hears the cheer of the crowd. Taking his place rather uneasily to begin with, he soon eases into the performance after playing some recognisable notes on his guitar. After his Grammy nomination, he does seem to be more noticeable on the scene but it is nice to see the fans embracing all of Fonseca's tracks. He says warm thank yous towards the end as the crowd rain more applause and gratitude on this unassuming singer/songwriter.

It was an excellent show. I did not think it was going to be as excited and fun as it was. Fonseca was just awesome... it was definitely a memorable concert, I will go to see him everytime he comes to Atlanta.

Simply amazing! I would recommend a Fonseca concert any time. His music, talent and charisma are felt from the first song. Can’t wait until next time he comes back to Atlanta.

Fonseca ‘s “Besos en la frente” is a contemporary lullaby imbued in tenderness, augmented by the veteran singer’s pathos-filled voice. It’s actually a song written after a tragedy — and perhaps an odd choice to kick off the 10-track set that celebrates Fonseca’s 20-year recording career.

But Fonseca’s choices have always been driven by what works musically — and this, he says, was the best choice. Those musical choices have led to a commercially successful two-decade career is encapsulated in Viajante , an album of all original material that goes from melancholy to partying to romantic, seamlessly blending Fonseca’s many influences. It’s hard to find good melodies in Latin music today, but here, there’s 10 of them.

The album’s title, Viajante (a derivation of traveler), explains it. “The difference between ‘Viajero’ and ‘Viajante’ […] is that a viajante stays the same as he travels from one place to the next,” says Fonseca. “In my case, the excitement and respect and love for music has remained intact all these years. Picking up a guitar still makes me anxious and excited.”

1. What did you learn during quarantine?

I took advantage of the time to write, and it’s perhaps the album where I’ve written most. And between reflections, and time with friends and family, I feel my biggest reflection is that in life, no matter what we each do, we are here to serve. As musicians, we do that. With my music I’ve helped people party, and fall in love, but I’ve also helped people get over pain and loss.

2. Any new acquired skills?

I learned how to write décimas [poetic verses or song lyrics consisting of a single four-line stanza followed by four 10-line stanzas with eight syllables per line]. I took classes with a Cuban poet over Zoom.

3. Which person first believed in your musical talent?

Actually, two people: My parents. Since I was five years old, and they heard me sing, they started taking me to classes and concerts and everything related with music.

4. What is a before-and-after moment in your career?

“Te mando flores” [Fonseca’s hit song from 2005].

5. And on that subject, tell us about your new song “2005,” featuring fellow Colombians Greeicy and Cali y El Dandee, which riffs off “Te Mando Flores…”

I’ve wanted to do something with “Te Mando Flores” for a long time, but I didn’t want to simply do a new version. I sat with [producers] Andrés Torres and Mauricio Rengifo and we decided to write a new chapter about a relationship today that harks back to that 2005 chapter. I owe so much to the song that I wanted to thank it and pay homage to it and do it differently.

6. What was the first album you bought with your own money?

The Beatles’ Help!

7. What song makes you cry?

“Yesterday.” When I bought that Beatles album, Help! , I sat down in my parent’s studio to listen to it — and when I got to “Yesterday,” it brought tears to my eyes.

8. The first concert you went to?

[Rock bands] Prisioneros and Hombres G at Coliseo El Campín in Bogotá. I must have been 13 years old. It’s engraved in my mind. Especially the roar of the crowd when they turned on the lights. I remember the entire concert, but that moment really struck me.

9. What did your parents do when you were young?

My dad was working in the flower business. My mom was a psychologist, but she spent a lot of time with us.

10. What was the first gift you bought your mother with money earned from music?

It was a trip. I invited my parents to Africa.

11. Concert you’d like to see by any artist, dead or alive?

I would have loved to see George Michael. He’s one of my most favorite artists, especially in terms of his vocals.

12. If you could have dinner with any person, dead or alive who would it be?

I’d have dinner with Paul McCartney.

13. What’s your favorite karaoke track ?

Any Luis Miguel track.

14. Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us.

I love poker. And yes, I bet. Not huge sums of money, but I’ve played for years — and every time I’m in Las Vegas at an award show, I play!

15. What do you spend too much money on?

16. What are you afraid of?

Lack of inspiration in music.

17. What series did you binge watch during quarantine?

I just finished watching Pieces of Her . And one thing about it, literally, it scared the heck out of me.

18. If you hadn’t been a musician, what field would you have worked in?

Something music industry related. Maybe an A&R, or something in management. I was actually asked to be an A&R while I was already a recording artist. I felt very honored. But it wasn’t for me.

19. What advice would you give your younger self?

When I look back to when “Te mando flores” came out and amazing things began to happen and it was a very intense time. Nothing was happening and suddenly everything was happening. I didn’t pay attention to a lot of things I should have paid attention to. But you’re inexperienced, and you don’t understand the industry and all it entails. I would have liked if someone told me, Bro, you have to be patient and this is going to take time. That would have been good advice. Until I finally understood

I always want a good sancocho.

Fonseca has won seven Latin GRAMMYS and received 17 nominations. He has also received 2 GRAMMY nominations and in 2006 won the VMALA award for Best New Artist. Fonseca was awarded La Musa Premio Triunfador by the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame, and received the first-ever Contemporary Icon Award at the SESAC Latina Music Awards. Fonseca was awarded “La Orden de Boyacá en grado Oficial”, the most important recognition given by the Colombian government for his work as a promoter of reconciliation and peace. He released his newest album Viajante in April of last year. The album received 4 Latin Grammy nominations and contains songs including “Cartagena”, “Para Poder Decirte Adiós”, “Besos en la Frente”, and “2005”.

Tickets go on-sale to the public on February 16, 2023, with pre-sales beginning Tuesday, February 14th.

Colombian singer and songwriter FONSECA has received seven Latin Grammy Awards. His career began with his self-titled debut album. He quickly rose to international fame with his 2005 album Corazn , which featured the hit single “Te Mando Flores.” Since then, he has released eight more albums that have produced multiple #1 airplay hits on the Billboard charts. MIAMI , Feb. 16, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- The seven-time Latin GRAMMY® winner and three-time GRAMMY® nominee, Fonseca , announces his most recent 2023 tour  'VIAJANTE USA TOUR'  that will take him to 10 cities in the United States . The tour will begin in June in the cities of Houston and Dallas , will then go through Washington , Boston , and New York , among many others, and culminating in Florida with two grand performances in Miami and Orlando .

'VIAJANTE USA TOUR'  follows the release of Fonseca's ninth album, titled "VIAJANTE," which earned him four Latin GRAMMY® nominations and a GRAMMY®. This album is a special one for the Colombian singer-songwriter because he reached the depths of his soul as he musically captured his personal experiences, and in 10 songs he outlined landscapes and stories.

The highly anticipated tour by the Colombian artist,  'VIAJANTE USA TOUR'  is produced by Loud And Live, the entertainment, marketing, and live events company based in South Florida . This tour will have the highest technology in lights and sound to bring Fonseca fans one of the most unique musical experiences of 2023 in the United States .

Just days ago, Fonseca premiered the music video for his single  'En Vivo y En Directo' , a song that is part of his  "VIAJANTE"  album and that is included in the extensive musical repertoire of the tour that will also feature the most select of his hits such as  "Te Mando Flores" ,  "Eres mi Sueño" ,  "Arroyito" ,  "Vine a Buscarte"  and  "Enrédame"  among many others.

About Fonseca Juan Fernando Fonseca , Colombian singer-songwriter, winner of seven Latin Grammy®, ventured into the artistic field for the first time in 2002 with his album, Fonseca. The internationalization of his musical career came in 2005 with his second album Corazón and the hit "Te Mando Flores."
