Warner Bros. unveils newly revamped studio tour

BURBANK, Calif. — At the newly revamped Warner Bros. studio tour, visitors can lounge on "Friends" character Monica's couch or play foosball just like Joey and Chandler in their New York City apartment.

Visitors can grab a coffee and dine at the Central Perk, the fictional diner where the characters from the popular NBC sitcom often met.

What You Need To Know

Warner bros. unveiled a newly revamped studio tour this summer in burbank the renovated tour was slated to come out in may 2020 but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic the new tour features the studio tram tour around the backlot, along with several new exhibits and interactive displays warner bros. expanded the central perk diner, where the characters of "friends" often met .

And of course, visitors can still hop aboard a tour cart and roam around the various working soundstages and backlot, take a picture in front of the "Full House" house and walk through the set of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." They can even hold and take photos of an Academy Award's Oscar statue from the 1940s as if they had won the actual award.

After being closed for more than a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Warner Bros. studio tour has reopened and features new experiences to bring visitors into the world of television and movies. The tour reopened in June.

"We've really reimagined the tour from where it was prior to the pandemic," said Gary Soloff, director of marketing and communications at Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood. "Now, guests can see the entertainment they love in a more immersive and experiential way."

full house studio tour

Since the 1970s, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour has been a staple attraction for visitors visiting Los Angeles and wanting an up-close look at the various soundstages and backlot sets — the real behind-the-scenes magic of Hollywood films and television.

The tour has grown over the years in size and scope. What started as private tours hosted by Jack Warner of Warner Bros. to special VIP guests of their production facilities is now a full-fledged tour operation open to the public from Thursday to Monday.

Soloff didn't give attendance numbers but said the studio tour has a very healthy demand. Visitors are required to wear face coverings during the tour and inside the exhibits. The tour prices start at $57 for Southern California residents through Sept. 30 and $69 for all other adult visitors.

Warner Bros. began renovating its popular studio tour in 2017. The company was slated to unveil the new tour in May 2020. However, the pandemic and related shutdowns delayed its opening until last month. Soloff didn't disclose how much Warner Bros. invested in revamping the tour.

The tour has several new features. An old parking lot has been transformed into a brand new welcome center, for example.

When visitors first walk in, they'll be able to learn about the four Warner brothers and the founding of the motion picture company.

Along the walls are photos and videos of the various movies and television shows, along with animations that Warner Bros. produced during its history.

Visitors then watch a short introductory film hosted by Ellen DeGeneres before meeting their tour guide, where they'll zip through the soundstages, backlot and prop facilities. The tram ride is about an hour.

"This is where we show how we bring the movie magic to life," said Soloff. "Our guides are expertly trained and give visitors an inside look at how we all put this together."

From there, the guide drops off visitors at Stage 48, the popular "Friends" television show soundstage.

The soundstage has been transformed into an interactive getaway. Here is where visitors can live out the fantasies of their "Friends" and other favorite shows. They can also grab a New York-inspired lunch at the newly expanded Central Perk diner, lounge in the leather chairs like those in Joey and Chandler's apartment, knock on Sheldon's apartment door and take pictures inside the actual set of "The Big Bang Theory."

One hallway showcases famous movie dresses worn by stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis and Lauren Bacall.

There are also plenty of interactive displays — areas where people can learn how motion capture works and forced perspective from "Lord of the Rings."

At the automatic dialogue replacement sound booth, visitors can dub the sound of their voice in place of the Morpheus character from "The Matrix" and tell Neo to take either the red or blue pill.

Additionally, people can grab a video of themselves flying aboard a broomstick or the Batpod in front of a green screen for an additional price. There is also plenty of exclusive merch at a brand new "Friends" store.

New to the tour is a celebration of the DC Universe and Harry Potter franchise.

Inside the building are iconic scenes, props and costumes from "Wonder Woman," "Aquaman" and more. Several of Batman's bat cars are on display, including the original batmobile from the Tim Burton and Michael Keaton film, the Tumbler from Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" and more.

Ever wonder what house you'd be placed in the Harry Potter universe? Well, there's an area where visitors can put on the magical sorting hat.

Soloff said the new and old studio tour experience is about creating an immersive environment to capture the imagination of the fans.

"This is all about the fans," he said. "We do this for the fans. If you're a fan of the Wizarding World or a fan of DC, you want to feel like you're in the story, and you want to be able to share that in 'Instagrammable' moments or a photo op. They want to be part of the story, and this enables them to be part of the story."

Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood Questions & Answers

full house studio tour

To see the Fuller House set, what day and time would be recommended for the week of May 8th? Thanks

full house studio tour

Unfortunately it depends on what is going on. In a week I knew 2 other people who went they saw different to me. The guide always asks what do you want to see and they accommodate!

I really wanted to see Big Bang Theory but they were filming at that time.

full house studio tour

I saw the Fuller House set (no cast) on my travels on Monday 3rd April in the 11.00 session. However, like everyone else has said it entirely depends on the schedule of the show and what is available. I overheard our tour guide get a walkie talkie buzz saying the set was open, so I wonder where we were going to go had that buzz not come through! Hope this helps - I totally recommend calling the studio though if this is a must-do on your list!

There is no way to predict what current sets you will see as schedules change by the day. Every tour is different, but still excellent on its on merits. On the day you visit and before going inside to buy tickets, suggest you go to the patio area in front of the Warner building where the tour golf carts gather and ask one of the guides/drivers what's being seen that day. The guides are super friendly and will be happy to assist you.

full house studio tour

It will depend on what is being filmed at the time of your tour. Some things are open and can be visited on tour, others are in use for your favorite program or used as part of another set.

Where Was ‘Full House’ Actually Filmed? The Truth Behind the Iconic Tanner Family Home

Where Does Kathie Lee Gifford Live? Photos of Nashville Home

For eight years, Full House was an integral part of ABC’s lineup of sitcoms, bringing feel-good family moments and relatable storylines to homes across the U.S. The show chronicled the lives of the loveable Tanner family in their San Francisco abode. Keep scrolling to find out where the series was actually filmed.

Where Was ‘Full House’ Filmed?

The sitcom’s opening credits showed actors Bob Saget , John Stamos , Dave Coulier , Jodie Sweetin , Candace Cameron Bure and Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen as they cruised in a car on the Golden Gate Bridge. The show’s theme song, “Everywhere You Look,” played as the Tanner family was seen hanging out around San Francisco, visiting parks and landmarks.

The credits closed with a number of aerial shots of the city and a few images of a two-story home with a red door in which the characters supposedly lived. While it appeared the show was filmed in San Francisco, that’s actually not the case. Most of the series was filmed at Warner Bros. Studios in Los Angeles. Producers took shots of a real two-story house located in San Francisco to offer the illusion that the characters were all living there.

There was only one episode throughout the franchise that was actually filmed in multiple spots around the city — season 8’s “Comet’s Excellent Adventure,” per IMDb. After the Tanner family’s beloved pooch, Comet, goes missing during the episode, they’re seen searching around San Franscisco to find him. It wasn’t the only episode of the series that was not filmed on the WB lot.

In the season 3 episode “Tanner’s Island,” patriarch Danny Tanner took his kids to Hawaii. The cast actually got to travel to paradise to complete scenes for the episode. Three seasons later, the characters were seen visiting Walt Disney World in Florida for the two-part season 6 finale where Danny proposes to Vicky Larson.

How to Visit the Iconic ‘Full House’ Home

The house that was used for scenes in the opening Full House credits is now a nostalgic tourist attraction. Fans of the sitcom gather outside of the Victorian-style home built in 1883 to snap photos pretty often. Unfortunately, it is a private residence, so you are not allowed inside. Still, it’s worth a trip to 1709 Broderick Street in San Francisco to visit the abode if you can’t get enough of Full House reruns.

The Connection Between Full House And Friends You Likely Never Knew

Danny Tanner serious

"Full House" was a feel-good family sitcom that dominated ABC's primetime schedule from 1985 to 1997. It helped launch the careers of Candace Cameron Bure as DJ Tanner, Jodie Sweetin as Stephanie Tanner, and famous twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who took turns playing Michelle Tanner on the series. The plot revolves around single widower Danny Tanner ( Bob Saget ) and his struggles to raise his three daughters while sharing the same home with his rock star-wannabe brother-in-law Jesse Katsopolis (John Stamos) and his best friend, Joey Gladstone (Dave Coulier). As you might expect, hijinks ensue with that many people living under the same roof. The beloved show still has an 80% approval rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes .

Speaking of large ensemble casts living in close quarters, "Friends" was another popular sitcom that aired on NBC from 1994 to 2004. On the surface, there aren't many similarities between the two shows, other than the fact they're both comedic network sitcoms that enjoyed long and successful runs. "Full House" was about a Southern California suburban family struggling with a tragic loss, whereas "Friends" was about six single young adults from New York trying to succeed in life and love. But the two shows have one very important thing in common, one which only the most ardent superfans might be aware of.

They were both filmed on the same soundstage in Southern California

As they say in the real estate business: location, location, location! It turns out that the same is sometimes true for network sitcoms as well. Whether it's pure coincidence or some magical bit of luck, filming both shows on the same sound stage (Sound Stage 24, to be precise) was one of many variables that may have led to both shows' critical success. According to L.A. Magazine , when the modern-day reboot "Fuller House" was launched in 2016, it was filmed on Sound Stage 26, and the network went to the trouble of building a replica façade of the San Francisco Victorian home used for the opening credits. But viewers on Rotten Tomatoes ranked the show lower than its predecessor, coincidentally ... or maybe not-so-coincidentally?

Since there was a bit of a production overlap, the cast of "Friends" didn't grace Sound Stage 24 until Season 2. And the studio did such a good job recreating apartment life in Manhattan that even to this day, fans like u/nokia621 are surprised to learn that it was filmed in Los Angeles. Sadly, both apartments and the Central Perk stages were dismantled after the show wrapped up filming, although the sound stage is still known as The Friends Stage (via The Hollywood Reporter ) to this day.

Anybody who's feeling nostalgic, has at least $69 to burn, and can afford transportation to the Hollywood area can go on a special Warner Bros. Studio Tour that features Stage 24 as a popular stop among its many highlights.

How to Find the "Full House" in San Francisco

full house studio tour

Whenever I'm guiding a tour in San Francisco, I can usually look forward to certain specific questions, and one of the more popular queries is about the Full House location.

That's why I wrote this post to explain how to find the Tanner's house from the show Full House, set in San Francisco.

In addition to providing the Full House address, I'll also include details about some of the other houses shown on the sitcom and why these locations are so culturally and historically relevant.

I'll also include a selection of useful tips and comments from San Francisco travel groups on Facebook.

What is the "Full House" House?

  • Where is the Full House?
  • Tips For Visiting
  • The Painted Ladies

Suggestions From Locals and Travelers

If you were an American kid in the late 80s and early 90s, you likely remember TGIF television, a block of Friday night shows run on the ABC television channel.

DC Tour Guide Canden on a Trip to San Francisco

Full House House Painted Ladies

Part of this lineup of shows included Full House , a sitcom described online as a “G-rated dysfunctional family”.

The family, The Tanners, lived in San Francisco. It was here that the widower father, his best friend, and his brother-in-law joined forces to raise three precocious little girls.

This show, with its simple one-liners and audience laugh track, struck a chord with American kids, allowing the makers to churn out hundreds of episodes before it was canceled in the mid-90s.

In recent years, new episodes have been taped for Netflix under the name Fuller House .

These have drawn huge ratings due to now-adults nostalgic longing for these simple childhood characters and storylines.

THE ACTUAL TANNER HOME

In some versions of the credits, a camera shot pulls out from a red door and a large home. This is where the Tanner’s live, at the made-up address of 1822 Gerard.

The real-life location of the Full House address is 1709 Broderick Street . This house is in the Lower Pacific Heights neighborhood, about a mile from the Painted Ladies.

One of the creators of Full House recently purchased and renovated the home, listing it for sale with one of the most prestigious real estate firms in California.

Sadly for fans, the interior does not look like that of the one on Full House, pre or post-renovation.

Lest you think this dwelling is a step down from one of the Painted Ladies, the most recent sold price for the “Tanner Home” had a price tag of $7.5 million (€6,930,000).

San Francisco is arguably the most expensive housing market in the United States.

It’s unlikely that the adult characters in the show, (a local morning talk show host, a some-time musician, and a stand-up comedian) could afford it in the real world today.

How to Get Here

If you’d like to visit 1709 Broderick Street and snap a picture of her no-longer red front door (from a respectful distance, of course),  there are several options.

The closest stations are Geary Boulevard and Masonic Avenue, a 12-minute walk from the home.

  • By Bus, five lines pass nearby: 1, 24, 28, 28R, and 42
  • By Bart, you would take lines RD and YL
  • Street parking is available although it can be hard to find a spot. You may have to park a few blocks away and walk.

TIPS FOR VISITING THE TANNER HOME

You will likely not be alone as the neighborhood can often be full of tourists trying to snap a picture. There can be between 1000-1500 visitors stopping by every day!

Neighbors do tend to get upset with those who don’t remember that private individuals live in the surrounding homes.

They have convinced the city to ban tourist buses altogether in an attempt to cut down on traffic.

Because parking enforcement or police patrols can often be found standing by, it’s best to get in and out with as little fuss as possible.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sf Painted Ladies (@paintedladiestourcompany)

Some tips for things to avoid are:

  • Blocking the sidewalks
  • Double parking
  • Parking in neighbors' driveways
  • Attempting to gain access to any of the homes/ringing the bell
  • Making a lot of noise

If you can avoid those, you should be able to snap a golden picture, one that takes you back to your childhood every time you look at it!

THE PAINTED LADIES

One of the most memorable images from the show comes from the opening credits.

Here you see the members of the household driving across the Golden Gate Bridge, then posing at various San Francisco landmarks, before ending on a shot of them picnicking in a park across from some pastel-colored hillside homes.

It is these homes, in real life known as the Painted Ladies, that folks most remember from the credits.

Painted Ladies San Francisco

These 7 houses are set on what is referred to as Postcard Row and teh Seven Sisters.

While well-known in the past, these homes are one of the most famous attractions in San Francisco, partly due to their appearance on the show.

Many folks believe the characters of Full House lived in one of the Painted Ladies, but they were merely the backdrop for the credits.

For directions on how to visit Postcard Row and the Painted Ladies, read our post here .

We always do our best to provide helpful information, but sometimes we might miss a few things. That's why we have a San Francisco Travel Tips group on Facebook!

This group and many others such as San Francisco Travel are great places to find tips and advice from residents in the area and other travelers who have been to the Bay Area.

Here are a few of the most helpful suggestions we found in these Facebook groups.

full house studio tour

Before we talk about anything else, it should be noted that even the house at 1709 Broderick Street is not technically the "Full House" House.

The house you can see from the street is the residence used as a model for the house, which was made on a studio set.

As a result, if you want to see the physical location of the show, you'll need to visit Warner Brothers Studios in Los Angeles and take a tour of the backlot!

full house studio tour

Although we did mention this earlier in our post, it is worth noting that the Full House location is not the same as the address of the Painted Ladies.

That said, it is only about a mile away, and a slightly downhill walk from the Painted Ladies, so you might want to consider walking between these attractions.

full house studio tour

One of the reasons to consider walking is that they don't allow buses or other tour companies to drive past the house, so it's not that easy to get there unless you take an Uber or rent a car.

If you are interested in seeing both attractions, it'll be much easier to see the Painted Ladies first.

Where to Find the House Used on Full House and Fuller House

Some of you know how much I love Full House and now, Fuller House ! When I went to San Francisco back in 2009 I had to stop by the Tanner house used on Full House . Remember how they used to show the houses, known as the painted ladies, in the opening credits of the show? Well silly me, I thought that one of those houses was the Tanner house even though none of them looked like it. So I went to Alamo Square and took a picture thinking I was in the right spot.

Now that I know I was in the wrong spot I will be sure to make it to the correct house the next time I’m in San Francisco. If you want to visit the house that was used for the exterior shots of the Tanner family home you will need to go to 1709 Broderick Street . Did you know that Jeff Franklin, the creator of Full and Fuller House , purchased the house? He hopes to turn it into a museum that fans can visit. I will have to go check that out if it actually happens.

Last year the cast was in San Francisco to celebrate the season 2 debut of Fuller House on Netflix. The cast stopped by the Tanner house and put their hands and feet in the cement. A friend of mine visited the house recently and said that the hands and feet prints are not on display outside of the house. So maybe if the museum opens up we will be able to see those.

It is possible but unlikely. But, we keep our eyes open. Of course, we use professional actors and comedians as guides, so maybe you’ll recognize your guide in the next television show or movie you watch.

Is there movie trivia?

Of course! We entertain you with trivia about your favorite films, actors, and directors. Here’s an example: According to one biography, Robin Williams decided to test out the believability of his Mrs. Doubtfire character during filming by going – as Mrs. Doubtfire – into an adult bookstore and making a purchase. He was able to do so without being recognized. And one more: During the filming of The Rock , Sean Connery insisted the producers build a cabin for him on Alcatraz as he didn’t want to travel from the mainland to the island every day; he got what he asked for.

Are the tours conducted in languages other than English?

At this time, the tours are only conducted in English; however, due to the popularity of Hollywood movie culture worldwide, we are planning to offer tours in various languages soon. Stay tuned!

Can I take pictures on the tour?

Absolutely. We welcome it and provide numerous opportunities for fantastic San Francisco photos. Feel free to take along your camcorders and cameras to capture the sites of San Francisco. Keep in mind that the tour is copyrighted by Carpe Diem Ventures, LLC so the content cannot be used commercially without permission.

Is there parking available nearby?

Most street parking is limited to one hour, so we suggest using one of the nearby parking garages. There are a number of garages near the main pickup location at Fisherman’s Wharf. We also suggest the use of SpotHero.com ( www.SpotHero.com ) to help find parking locations.  In your search, use the address of the Boudin Bakery (160 Jefferson Street, SF, CA 94133) located very close to our meeting location.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
