But it has fewer dining options compared to the larger resorts.

Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta is our go-to spot whenever we want an affordable and diverse alternative to The Inn at Sea Island.

Or maybe you want to spend time with family members that you haven’t had the chance to see in a long time. Whether you want a break from everyday stresses, some extra quality time with family, or just want to be spontaneous, a North Georgia day trip is a great option!

Before you head out on a road trip, follow a few of these easy tips to ensure a safer, smoother trip.

The Shack of Ellijay [118 N Main St, Ellijay, GA 30540] The Shack of Ellijay offers fresh broth bowls, pho, poke, and other healthy options. They focus on a great environment, great service, and decor that’s unique and adds to the cozy atmosphere.

Hole In The Wall [12B Town Sq, Blairsville, GA 30512-3565] This American-style restaurant is known for its delicious breakfast options; however, they offer plenty of other great options! The service is fast, the staff is friendly, and the prices are wallet-friendly. 

The Chocolate Express Fudge Factory [634 E Main St, Blue Ridge, GA 30513] Treat yourself to fudge and decadent desserts at this Blue Ridge staple. Almost everything is made from scratch, too, so you’ll enjoy that homemade taste.

From visiting a winery to ziplining through the Blue Ridge Mountains, this area has something for everyone, which is what makes it the perfect place to visit with your family and friends. When you’re staying in North Georgia, you can also make a quick day trip to Atlanta for favorites like the Georgia Aquarium, Zoo Atlanta, the High Museum of Art, Six Flags Over Georgia, and more!

Horseback Riding in Blue Ridge If you want to experience the beautiful terrain of the Blue Ridge forests, this activity is a great option! An experienced guide will ensure you have a fun and safe experience as you view the unique features of North Georgia, from the Cohutta Mountains to wildlife on the Appalachian Trail . Several companies offer sunset rides, custom rides, riding lessons, pony rides, and more, including Appalachian Trail Rides and Blanche Manor Horseback Riding.

These three bridges connect scenic trails that will allow visitors to capture the beauty of North Georgia. 

If you visit this area during the warmer months of the year, you can visit Bridal Veil Falls at Tallulah Gorge State Park, which becomes known as the Sliding Rock for people brave enough to slide down the rocks and into the pool below. Experienced kayakers will also have the opportunity to brave the waterfalls when “whitewater releases” occur biannually in the spring and the fall.

Other favorite outdoor North Georgia stops include hiking trails to Amicalola (“tumbling waters” in Cherokee) Falls and Anna Ruby Falls, rides on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, Brasstown Bald, Lake Chatuge, and the Chattahoochee River in the Chattahoochee National Forest. 

Historical Sites in North Georgia If you’re interested in historical sites and artifacts that capture the past experiences and events of the area, you’ll have plenty of options. Awesome Small Towns Near Atlanta You’ll Love For Weekend Getaways

Being from the west coast, we don’t have a ton of cute, really old towns with beautiful storefronts and town squares. Doing a North Georgia road trip will take care of that for you, as it’s chalked full of cute towns very near Atlanta, many dating to the early 1800s.  We’ve found that a lot of our friends have family in North Georgia and when they visit they’re not sure just where to go for day trips and such, which is why we’re sharing our favorite small towns. These are great destinations for North Georgia day trips.

These cute Georgia towns are the perfect excuse to escape Atlanta for a weekend and even though they aren’t very far, they’re a world away. Be sure to stop into the small local farm stands and historic museums as you go, and remember, it’s okay to get a little distracted to make your getaway more enjoyable.

Cute Neighborhoods of Cartersville, Georgia

Cartersville is our first small town of mention because it’s just what you’d expect to see in Georgia: cute brick storefronts, mellow community vibe, and incredibly well preserved historic homes. The neighborhoods directly around downtown, Main Street to be precise (I know, actual Main St) are easy to stroll through and if you’re lucky enough to visit at the right time, you can even participate in different events , from markets to craft fairs..

If you’re unfamiliar, a pilgrimage in Georgia is an event where historic homes open their doors to the public to visit. Many are still furnished with period appropriate pieces and art, but also many are active homes where real people live today. It’s pretty cool.  Also in Cartersville, Etowah Mounds historic site – we need to visit again before telling you all about it.

Dining tip :  check out 4 Way Lunch and Coconuts Ice Cream for a fun, kid friendly Georgia lunch. It’s our niece and nephew’s favorite spot!

Acworth for Louisiana flavors (and other great restaurants)

For as big as the town of Acworth is, its downtown area is quite small and concentrated on two small streets. That doesn’t mean it’s not worth a visit!  Downtown Acworth is seeing a revival with all kinds of unique restaurants and shops. From kitschy decor shops to ice cream and local Georgia cuisine, it’s a great small town to visit. And they really know how to dress up the town for Christmas !

The best part of downtown Acworth though is having dinner at Henry’s Louisiana Grill . Beside fried chicken and a thousand varieties of biscuits, Georgia cuisine blends into the surrounding states and borrows a lot (in my opinion). Henry’s Louisiana Grill owns it and is crazy delicious. And fun. With all the dishes you might equate with New Orleans and some really creative twists, Henry’s is our new favorite Georgia experience.

And what’s really cool, Henry is a real guy and he’s super cool. He likes to check the vibe of his restaurant and make sure his guests are enjoying themselves. He’s just as unique and spicy as our dinners, only difference was that our dinners didn’t stand up and throw beads around our necks like a Mardi Gras parade. Really, I cannot wait to visit our family in Georgia again so we can go back to Henry’s.

Tip : hide as much of the spiced cornbread as you can in a backpack or something. They’ll keep bringing you more and you can live off of just that for days!

Kennesaw for Civil War History Near Atlanta

I’ll start with my disclaimer: a lot of Georgia still whitewashes the Civil War and slavery as just a bumpy chapter in American history, and that includes some museums and monuments. Yes, some sites very much own it, like Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield . With miles of hiking and running trails, it’s a wonderful place to visit for getting some quality outdoor time, but it’s also got a good, small museum about the Civil War. Yes, there are a good many museums about Civil War history and events, but this one is great for understanding and explaining battles and why the war in Georgia went the way it did.

Tip :  if you’re not into the historical aspects, the trail systems are excellent on their own, particularly in the summer when all you want is a little shade.

Note : despite the beautiful lawn and ample open space, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield is not a place for a sprawling picnic. There are designated picnic tables, but all across North Georgia, and everywhere else, picnicking on battlefield sites is either prohibited or discouraged.

Another Civil War site to visit in Kennesaw is the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History . It’s actually pretty neat with its kid-friendly displays and exhibits. The highlight is the General, a historic locomotive engine. If you’re into trains (or have a kid that is) this is a great stop to add to your North Georgia road trip. There is also a fair amount of outdoor space that’s set up like an old town, so it’s easy to get the kids to burn off energy before going through the museum.

Note : this is one of the places that has some whitewashing of the Civil War, so use your discretion when reading the exhibit signs with kids. Example: the statue of Nathan Bedford Forest, a founding member of the KKK…

An afternoon in Artsy Marietta

We love Marietta. It’s set up so perfectly around its town square and is great to explore with kids. The town is artsy and quiet, and is very near Atlanta. With several unique cafes and restaurants, you can visit any time of day for a quiet stroll and shopping. We prefer to visit in the afternoon so the kids can enjoy the play structure in the square. It is actually a miniature version of the General locomotive (see above).

Other great things about downtown Marietta are the toy and magic shops, the vintage theater and the local coffee roaster. What’s not to love?

Remember how above I mentioned doing an event or checking out the historic homes in Cartersville? Marietta does a pilgrimage and it’s actually a large, ticketed event to be able to visit some of the beautiful houses. This historic home tour is done in partnership with the visitors bureau in town, so if you’re interested, check out their website for upcoming Marietta pilgrimage dates.

Tip: if you’re making a North Georgia road trip in order of the small towns we’re sharing, between Marietta and the next one, Dahlonega, you’ll find Blue Ridge, GA . It’s adorable and worth checking out if you have the time!

Dahlonega: the North Georgia Gold Rush town

What an adorable place! Founded in the early 1800s, Dahlonega is a must-stop spot on a North Georgia road trip. Like Marietta, it’s quaint with a great town square. The buildings have really stood the test of time and are a great backdrop if you just have to spend a day playing Instagrammer.

We really enjoyed lunch at the old time saloon, the Crimson Moon, where they feature local bands each night. Following some delicious Georgia meatloaf, a walk around the town brought us to the gold rush museum in the center of the square. This isn’t a great stop for kids unless they’re very into history, as it’s 90% reading and 10% engagement/video. Perfect for history-hungry adults though!

The highlight in Dahlonega for us was actually visiting a mine. We went to the Crisson Mine to do some gold panning and look for gems, and we totally struck it big. The mine crew was great with the kids helping them swirl and find gold, and then we all had a blast doing a scavenger hunt for gems. We left with emeralds, citrine, garnets and more. Bonus for us: outside was a whole setup showing how mining works with displays, working exhibits and tons of mining equipment.

Tip : if you have older kids or it’s just brave adults, there is another mine, the Consolidated Gold Mine , that you can actually tour and go 200 feet down into the earth, kind of like we did in Breckenridge . It’s pretty cool if you’re cool with small dark tunnels.

Picturesque Alpine Helen: a taste of Bavaria in Georgia

In Washington we have the adorable town of Leavenworth . In California they have Solvang (one of the cutest Christmas towns in Cali ) for getting into the European spirit. In Georgia it’s all about Helen. Alpine Helen is a themed town set at the edge of the Appalachian / Blue Ridge Mountains. The Chattahoochee River winds through from start to finish and it’s just gorgeous. All around the town are awesome outdoor experiences, including river tubing, but the town itself is an attraction.

Polka music pumping and gingerbread house style storefronts, our kids thought Helen was a hoot . Of course the town runs on tourism, but it really owns it which makes the campiness wonderfully fun. And they keep Christmas up way past the holiday season, so it’s got that going for it too.

Highlights in Helen for our family included authentic German lunch of sausages, sauerkraut and bacon/dough pinwheels; watching glass blowers hard at work; visiting Charlemagne’s Kingdom aka the model train hall; and just taking in the town. If you’re visiting Atlanta or doing a road trip, no matter the time of year, just go visit Helen and enjoy the spectacle of it all.

Clarksville, GA for BBQ and relaxation

We didn’t take the last train to Clarksville , but we drove as part of our North Georgia road trip. Laid out similarly to Dahlonega, Clarksville is built around a square and has been able to maintain it’s small town southern charm. It’s actually really turned itself into a foodie destination.

Mixed into the artisan shops and cafes, Georgia cuisine has made its home around the square. Local favorites include the Copperpot, the Attic, and Harvest Habersham. Our favorite was actually not here on the square though…

Hawg Wild BBQ and Catfish House was the winner for us. Our kids fell in love with smokey pulled pork when we visited Estes Park , Colorado and since then, it’s become a favorite for them. When you can sell kids on plain meat and bread without needing anything else, you know you’ve mastered it. I personally loved the brisket. True, I had to dissect the fat off it, but I’m so glad they cooked it the way they did because the rich flavor was incredible.

Beyond food, Clarksville is also home to golfing and a really wonderful resort. We planned a few days at the Apple Mountain Club Vacation Resort and didn’t want to leave. The resort is part of Holiday Inn’s timeshare brand ( and you know that we love and utilize timeshares ) and it’s perfect for families. We took full advantage of the mini golf, recreation hall, cafe, hot tub, movie check-out and more. If it was summer, we would’ve been all about the pool, onsite playground, basketball, BBQs, oversized chess and more. We’ll actually be returning in the summer because it’s awesome.

Note : there are also horse stables for trail rides and horse experiences, but they do have age requirements for riding (8 years and up). We didn’t ride this trip, but next time!

Whether the goal is to do a series of North Georgia day trips or to add on a weekend getaway from Atlanta, there are lots of great, fun choices. North Georgia is beautiful and quiet. The activities are endless, and in the summertime, it’s a outdoor adventure destination.

Tips For A Family Day Trip To Savannah, Georgia

Are you taking a day trip to Savannah, Georgia, looking for some family-fun things to do with kids or teens? If so, you’re in the right place. We recently spent one day in Savannah with our two teenage sons and 11 year-old daughter. Even with limited time, we wanted to experience the essence of this beautiful coastal town without feeling rushed.

Savannah is known for its well-preserved architecture, beautiful old oak trees draped in Spanish moss, and its history. Sounds perfect for couples, adults, and retirees, but what about families? While I was fairly certain my husband and I would love Savannah, I wanted to make sure my kids had a great time, too.

Day Trip to Savannah the whole family will enjoy

With only one day in Savannah we managed to sprinkle in fascinating learning, fun exploring, and lots of good eating. Our family of five thoroughly enjoyed our time in Savannah. Here’s how your family can do the same.

Prepare for your day trip

To make the most of your day trip to Savannah, prepare a bit before arriving so you can make efficient use of your short time in the city and keep kids engaged and excited about exploring.

1. Familiarize yourself with a map of the city.

Known as America’s first planned city, Savannah is laid out in a grid format. The city includes more than 20 squares filled with beautiful parks, grassy areas, businesses, churches and monuments. Savannah’s Historic District is designated as a National Historic Landmark District by the National Park Service. In fact, Savannah encompasses more than 1,600 restored structures in just over two square miles and is the largest Historic Landmark District in the country. The area is walkable, so decide approximately where you want to start and which direction you want to explore. We started in Forsyth Park and headed north to the river.

2. Read up briefly on Savannah’s history.

It helps to know some of Savannah’s history before arriving. I quickly reviewed a little bit about Savannah with my three kids so they would be familiar with names and places we would encounter during our tour of the city. James Oglethorpe , for one, was a name I knew we’d read/hear a lot about throughout the city. A military leader and social reformer, Oglethorpe founded the city of Savannah in 1733. I briefed them on Oglethorpe’s friendship with Tomochichi , Head Chief of the Yamacraw Indians – an intriguing story that made visiting Tomochichi’s grave site all the more interesting when we happened upon it.

3. Research restaurants ahead of time.

You will have your fill of delectable and fun dining options. In fact, the amount and variety of restaurants to choose from may be a tad overwhelming, so do your research ahead of time. This will save time and ensure the entire family is happy with the choices. It’s also important to plan ahead if reservations are necessary. Keep reading to find out about some of our favorite foods from our day trip to Savannah.

4. Vote on how to spend your time.

It’s best to have somewhat of a plan before arriving in Savannah. There are many ways to get around – walk, bike, trolley, etc. as well as different sights to see. With limited time, you won’t be able to experience everything Savannah has to offer, so decide as a family how you want to spend your time to get the most from your day trip.

Family-fun Ideas During A Day Trip To Savannah

While spending more than a day in Savannah would be nice, you can actually cover a lot of ground and get a good taste of the city in just a day trip. Fortunately, Savannah has plenty of kid/teen-friendly activities to mix in with all of the history you’ll encounter to make sure everyone has a good time.

Forsyth Park

You’ve likely seen Forsyth Park’s famous fountain in photographs. Surrounded by beautiful flowers and large oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, Forsyth Park is the epitome of Savannah’s natural beauty and enchantment. Stroll through the park, pose for pictures or just sit on a park bench and soak in Savannah’s charm. On this bright blue sunny day, even my teen boys were taken in by the allure of this park. For younger kids, check out the two playgrounds just down the walkway from the fountain.

Historic District

Continue on through the Historic District, walk up and down the roads, read the signs in the squares telling of Savannah’s famous people and history. You’ll encounter churches steeped in history, beautiful 18 th and 19 th century homes, the birthplace of Girl Scouts founder, Juliette Gordon Low (on Oglethorpe Avenue), and grave sites of historical figures like Button Gwinnett, a signer of the Declaration of Independence buried in Colonial Park Cemetery.

Now, in case your kids are like mine and are only interested in history to a point, it’s good to mention that as you meander through these beautiful history-filled streets, you’ll also be making your way toward some really great spots for lunch.

Tours, if time allows

While our family decided to do our own walking tour of the city, we saw plenty of families on guided tours. There is a variety to choose from and can be a fun way to keep kids entertained while exploring Savannah. Your family can glide around town on Segways, ride bicycles, take narrated carriage rides, guided walking tours, or trolley rides. The hop-on, hop-off trolleys are popular, but I’ve heard they can get busy and can include long wait times to catch the next trolley, so keep that in mind if you’re short on time. You’ll want to research which tour makes sense for your family and fits within your schedule for the day.

Forrest Gump bench site

Head to Chippewa Square on Bull Street to see the location of the bench scenes from Forrest Gump. The bench has been moved to a museum, but it’s still cool to see the exact site Tom Hanks played this iconic role. The scene took place on the north side of the square facing Bull Street. There is a garden there now so it doesn’t look exactly the same as it did in the movie, but the background contains the same monument and grassy area. Note: Be sure to check out the statue in Chippewa Square of colonial founder James Oglethorpe.

If you’re in Savannah for just one meal or three, you’ll wish it was more. There are so many restaurants to choose from, you may have a hard time deciding. From southern fried chicken to scrumptious seafood and everything in between, there are restaurants steeped in history, British-style pubs, places serving family-style and sites said to be haunted. One interesting place is The Pirates’ House which dates back to 1753. It started as an inn for seafarers but eventually became a gathering place for pirates. The pirate theme atmosphere can be entertaining for kids, but the wait for a table can be long, so plan ahead. Our family chose to eat at Goose Feathers Café on Barnard Street since our kids were craving breakfast for lunch. The cozy cafe is very highly rated and the long line proved its popularity. The wait went fast, though, and it was definitely worth it. The kids gobbled up their whipped cream and fruit-topped waffles and I highly recommend their veggie panini. If you go, know that Goose Feathers is only open until 2 p.m.

Leopold’s Ice Cream

After discovering more of the city we made sure to incorporate an afternoon snack. We headed to Leopold’s Ice Cream on Broughton Street – a very popular Savannah tradition since 1919. However, the line was out the door, down and around the block. We didn’t have the time or desire to wait in line, so we ventured to Hokulia just down the street for some shaved ice and smoothies. (They also serve ice cream and gourmet popcorn.) We made note to check out Leopold’s the next time we’re in town. I’ve heard people wait as much as an hour to get their scoop of ice cream. People say it’s worth it, so fit this in your schedule if you can.

Savannah’s Waterfront

Savannah’s waterfront includes wide cobblestone streets lined with old cotton warehouses turned into shops, galleries, restaurants, and hotels. Ex-Alpharetta office manager who stole $8.5M for designer bags, trips, football tickets sentenced

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A former manager and executive assistant for a company in Alpharetta has learned her fate for embezzling millions to pay for trips, designer bags and college football tickets.

According to court documents, between 2015 and 2020, Sonya Hesenius, 60, of St. Petersburg, Fla., was an employee at a company in Alpharetta as an office manager and executive assistant who provided third-party yard management services.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia said during her employment, Hesenius made fraudulent charges on corporate credit cards and caused the company to reimburse her credit card for personal expenses. Officials said to hide her scheme, she approved all the charges herself, withheld supporting documentation from the company, and disguised the unauthorized spending in the company’s accounting system as legitimate expenses such as newspaper advertisements.

Hesenius’ activities included the following:

• Using more than $172,000 on her daughter’s wedding
• Over $600,000 at Saks Fifth Avenue on items such as designer handbags
• Over $460,000 for herself, family members, and friends to travel all over the world
• Flying herself and her family on private jets to vacations in France, Greece, Hawaii, and Turks and Caicos, totaling more than $145,000
• Tickets to attend University of Tennessee sporting events, the Kentucky Derby, the Masters, the Stanley Cup Finals, and various concerts, totaling more than $238,000
• A recreational vehicle costing more than $100,000, using $40,000 of company money as a down payment
• Hundreds of thousands of dollars on high-end furniture
• Plastic surgery and dental expenses
• Conversions of company funds into cash through over $1 million in PayPal, Venmo, and Square transfers to herself and family members

In total, Hesenius stole $8,614,729.37 throughout the fraud scheme.

“Hesenius was entrusted with handling the financial responsibilities for the company where she worked.  But she chose to steal from the company, blatantly using company funds to pay for expensive, overseas vacations for herself and family members, plastic surgery, shopping binges at exclusive retail stores, and other exorbitant purchases,” said U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan.

She was convicted on these charges on November 29, 2023, after she pleaded guilty.

Hesenius was sentenced to six years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Hesenius was also ordered to pay restitution for $8,614,729.37.

Christina Applegate Says She Walked 9,000 Steps a Day Without Cane During Family Trip

Christina Applegate far exceeded her own expectations for herself during a recent vacation.

Applegate, 52, who has been candid about her battle with multiple sclerosis since her 2021 diagnosis , shared the win during the Tuesday, April 9, episode of her and Jamie-Lynn Sigler ’s “MeSsy” podcast.

“I ended up walking. I couldn’t believe it. The first couple of days I walked with my cane and then I started to feel like that was actually hindering me a little bit in some weird way,” Applegate said of the family trip to The Netherlands and Paris. “All of a sudden this, like, strange superpower took over and I just ended up walking without my cane the whole rest of the time and was amazed by it.”

The Dead to Me alum noted that her level of activity surprised her, as she hasn’t “gone over maybe 2,000 steps in a day” in two years.

“And I was looking at my Fitbit and it was like 9,000 [steps] a day,” she said.

Applegate described the “great” getaway as a “big family get-together” and noted that her husband, Martyn LeNoble , has family in the Netherlands.

The update comes after Applegate admitted during an episode of the podcast earlier this month that she hadn’t “taken a shower in three weeks” because she was unable to stand up in the shower due to her MS symptoms.

“[I have] insane tingling that just has spurts of tingles that are weird coming from, like, my butt down,” Applegate explained. “I haven’t slept for 24 hours because my eye is doing something weird where every time I close my eye to go to sleep my right eye starts to shift.”

She continued: “[I] definitely am going to have to go in and see someone because it’s a little scary and freaking me out that my eye is going to burst out of my face or something. I’m a little concerned about that, and my legs have never been this bad, so I don’t know what’s going on.”

Sigler, 42, who also has MS, said on Tuesday that Applegate pushing herself out of her comfort zone on the trip to Europe seemed to do wonders for her. She pointed out that while deviating from her routine often causes her stress, it seemed to have the “opposite” effect on Applegate.

“You got out of your element. You and I spoke briefly and you mentioned to me it was almost like a purpose that you had every day [and] that you were able to see how much more you could physically do,” she said. “And I think that’s really important for you to realize.”

Applegate admitted that the “devastation” of her diagnosis sometimes takes over “to the point where I don’t want to try.” She shared that although she was on her feet more than she anticipated during the trip, it was “hard” to accept her slower pace.

“It was hard seeing everyone’s backs,” she said. “Just kind of being the little caboose the whole time, which, you know, is a hard feeling. But then everyone kind of saw that and then would try to stick with me and make me feel like we could walk at my pace too. So, I felt good about it.”

Thinking of taking a last-minute drive to see the eclipse here's what to know.

NASA says that roughly 31.6 million people live in the path of this year's total solar eclipse, and a little under half of the U.S. population lives within 200 miles driving distance of the path of totality .

That could mean many millions of Americans will hit the road to get a better view on April 8. If you're still pondering whether or not you want to make the journey, here's what to consider.

Have some destinations in mind, and check the weather and cloud cover forecasts in advance

It's a good idea to scout out one or more locations within driving distance, so that you have some flexibility if traffic or weather is threatening your plans, says Jonathan Upchurch, a professor emeritus of civil engineering at Arizona State University who has studied travel around solar eclipses.

There are several interactive tools that show the path of totality, including Eclipse2024.org and the National Solar Observatory . You can use them to figure out what sites might work best for you.

In terms of weather, check not just the weather forecast, but also the cloud cover forecast. Some websites, such as Windy.com will predict cloud cover ahead of time, giving you a sense of whether you'll actually be able to see the eclipse in all its glory.

During the total solar eclipse in 2017, Upchurch says he chose to go to Idaho "because there were some great chances of having sunny skies, and I had the opportunity to be nimble and relocate if I wanted to."

Before driving into the path of totality, make sure your gas tank is full and that you've got everything you need

During the last total solar eclipse in 2017, it's estimated some 5 million people took to the roads, and those numbers will potentially be much higher this year.

Given all that, Upchurch says it's important to make sure you're taking what you need into the path of totality. You should make sure your car is gassed or charged up, and that you have plenty of snacks and water with you in case you get stranded for a while, especially when trying to leave.

Simple tips to safely photograph the eclipse with your cellphone.

Also don't forget to bring eclipse glasses, which must be worn anytime you're looking at the sun, except for the few minutes when it is completely blocked by the moon.

Some state emergency planners also recommend bringing a paper map or road atlas in case cellular networks become overloaded with visitors seeking directions from their phones.

Arrive early and stay late

Once you figure out where you're going to watch the eclipse, and you've got your supplies, try to get there early. Although traffic is likely to be heavier than normal on the morning of eclipse day, it still should be possible to reach many destinations without too much hassle, says Upchurch.

"Leaving is definitely going to be more of a problem," he says. As the eclipse concludes, people will take to the roads all at once to try and get home as fast as they can. In 2017, that led to traffic jams that lasted many hours in some areas. If possible, Upchurch says, people should stay put for a while to try and avoid the worst of the post-eclipse rush, which in 2017 stretched even into the following day in some parts of the country.

And one more thing: If you do find yourself on the move near the time of the eclipse, state officials stress that you should not simply pull over to the side of the road or highway you're driving on. It's important to be parked legally and safely at the moment of totality.

If you're already in the path of totality: Relax and enjoy!

Several major metropolitan areas including Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo are already inside the path of totality, so there's no need to seek a better view, Upchurch says. You'll probably have the most fun simply staying where you are.

If you're on the edge of the path of totality, however, you might consider making a short trip to get closer to the center of the eclipse's path.

"If you're within about 40 miles of the center line, you'll have two-and-a-half minutes or more" of complete totality, Upchurch says. It's up to you to decide whether it's worth making the trip to a more central location.

Despite studying the potential hassles of traveling extensively, Upchurch says he's still looking forward to seeing the 2024 eclipse, which he plans to watch from Texas.

"Totality is absolutely spectacular," he says. "If you have a chance to witness it, I would do it."
