If you’re cruising out of Vancouver, chances are you’ll arrive by plane and need to figure out a way to get from the airport to the cruise terminal. Luckily, there are several options, depending on your budget.

Best Ways to Get from the Airport to Cruise Terminal

1. uber or lyft.

For years, taxi companies had Vancouver on lockdown, but as of January 2020, the Passenger Transportation Board approved ride-sharing in the city.

Keep in mind you may need an international data plan in order to use a ride-sharing app without getting charged international data usage rates. The ride itself should take about 30 minutes or less.

While taxis are no longer the only game in town, they’re still a viable and popular option for people wanting to make the trip to and from the airport. This is especially true if you don’t have international data to use on a ride-sharing app.

Plus, there are almost always cabs at the ready, whereas you might find yourself having to wait for an Uber or Lyft.

Worried about being overcharged? Don’t be. The fare is set based on zones, so you’ll know exactly how much you’re going to be charged.

To grab a taxi from the airport, leave the baggage claim area, walk out of the building, and you’ll see a taxi queue. You simply hop in line, and they will assign you the next available cab.

Because Vancouver airport controls the taxi companies, you don’t have to worry about being taken advantage of. They also have signs posted explaining the various zones and rates.

Vancouver has a very intuitive rail system that is easy to navigate. The best part is you can take it right from the airport to the waterfront downtown. This option works best if you’re on a budget and don’t mind doing a little bit of walking.

To catch the SkyTrain, go to Level Three, and you’ll find the train right next to the parking garage. You don’t have to worry about getting on the wrong train because there’s only one route that services the airport, Canada Line. This route will end at the waterfront where the cruise terminal is located.

4. Cruise Line Transfer

All of the major cruise lines offer transfer services from the Vancouver Airport to the cruise ship. Most, however, only offer this service on embarkation and disembarkation day only. In other words, if you’re flying in a day early, this option won’t be available to you.

Otherwise, this is the option many cruisers find to be the most convenient. Most cruise lines charge somewhere in the ballpark of $30 per guest (each way) and require that you purchase transfers in advance so they know exactly how many people will be using the buses.

You can book the return transfer back to the airport during your cruise.

As an example, Carnival Crusie Line charges $27.99 per guest each way. At that rate, it’s cheaper to use one of the above methods if at all possible.

Pro : Someone will meet you at the baggage claim and be able to help you with your luggage.
Con : Typically, the bus won’t leave for the port until it is full. This means you could wind up circling the airport a couple of times, collecting fellow guests.

The Vancouver cruise ship terminal is downtown at Canada Place, on the Burrard Inlet waterfront. With a distance of 8.5 miles or 13.8 km to the cruise port, cruise passengers won’t have the stress of travelling too far after their plane has landed.

Since the port of Vancouver only sees cruise ships during spring and summer, the airports lack the shuttles services commonly found in Miami, Los Angeles, and other United States hubs. While airport shuttles exist, cruise passengers need to book one in advance.

When traveling to the airport for your return flight, taxis are plentiful downtown. Although, if there are multiple ships in port, you may have to queue for one.

If you have limited time between disembarkation and your flight, a taxi may not be the fastest option.

Use Uber Or Lyft

The city of Vancouver has ride share. Lyft and Uber services are readily available but rates will vary upon availability. Wait until you’ve collected your luggage before requesting a ride with their smartphone app. Then wait outside on level 2, in the designated rideshare area.

International travelers can use the airport’s free Wi-Fi to use the app without roaming charges.

With Uber, you can choose from an UberX or Uber XL. UberX can accommodate up to four people, and the latter can take up to six. Lyft offers a similar choice with a smaller and larger vehicle option (that takes up to five).

However, if you’re traveling as a group of four, it’s recommended you get a larger vehicle. The smaller one may not accommodate all of your luggage. Bear in mind, that smaller vehicles are more plentiful, so you may wait longer for an UberXL or Lyft XL.

An UberX or Lyft costs CAD 30, and the larger vehicles CAD 48. Both Uber and Lyft will drop off passengers at the same area at the Canada Place cruise terminal. With a difference of CAD 6 between rideshare and taxi services, the savings may not be worth the wait.

My preferred means of public transportation is Skytrain. Skytrain, or Vancouver’s rapid transit system, is easy to use, inexpensive, and provides the best way to get downtown. Follow the directions at the airport to the trains.

You’ll want to purchase a ticket to the “Waterfront Station” at the end of the “Canada Line.” The train service starts at 5:07 am, and the last train leaves at 12:56 am.

Tickets cost under CAD 9.35 for adults, CAD 8 for seniors and children 13 yrs. or older, and under 12 are free. Trains leave every 7 minutes and expect the journey to take 25 minutes.

There are twelve stops from the Vancouver Airport to the Waterfront Station, with Waterfront being the last. During rush hour, Skytrain travelers will get to their cruise ship faster than those using a taxi or Uber.

If there are line-ups at the ticket machines, you can use a credit card to tap in when you enter Skytrain and tap-out when you exit. The tap-in and out system makes it super fast. However, you will need a separate credit card per person.

Once you arrive, exit the building, turn right and walk one block to Howe Street. Turn right and it’s a short walk to the city’s cruise terminal. Canada Place and the Vancouver cruise terminal will be in front of you.

If you walk around from one side to the next, you’ll probably see your cruise ship. To access the Canada Place cruise ship terminal, follow the ramp that slopes down into the parkade. Signs clearly mark the directions for cruise passengers.

Alternatively, you can enter Canada Place and take an elevator down to the cruise terminal.

The Skytrain’s Canada Line provides an inexpensive option and the best choice if you can walk a few blocks and manage your luggage. Obviously, it doesn’t work if you’re mobility challenged, or your plane arrives outside of operating hours.

Although, if your plane arrives around midnight, I’d suggest staying at one of the Richmond hotels near the airport, and taking the Skytrain to the cruise ship terminal the following morning.

Try A Limousine Service

If you want to arrive in style, Vancouver offers limousine service. Here are a few private transfer options from the airport to the Vancouver cruise port. A limousine service is a great option for a larger travel group. Prices are current for spring 2024.

Time Limousine Service (604)340-9200 charges CAD 117 for a private airport transfer. Ritz Limousines (604)937-7480 charges CAD 110+. My Limo Ride (604)597-9040 charges CAD 135.

Long Term Parking Options

For those who live within driving distance of downtown Vancouver, the cruise terminal offers long-term parking. However, cruise passengers need to pay CAD 32.00 a day. That gets expensive when a 7-day cruise costs an additional CAD 232 in parking, 14-days cruises CAD 450+ etc.

Most of the parking is due to fees. The rates include a CAD 7.50 convenience fee, 24% transit levy parking tax, 5% goods, and services tax, and a 7% provisional sales tax on the convenience fee.

Instead, I park at the Value Long Term Lot at the Vancouver International Airport and take the Skytrain downtown. The Value Long Term Parking lot is accessed at 3211 Grant McConachie Way, with a Skytrain station (Templeton Station) in the lot.

The lot is huge and always has plenty of spaces. There are spots near the Skytrain station for electric vehicles too. It’s cheaper to pay online rather than at the lot.

A 7-day stay costs approximately CAD 120, and a 14-day stay costs CAD 220. The Skytrain ticket to get downtown is under CAD 10 per person.

If you’re flying in the night before your cruise and arriving late, the Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel provides luxury accommodation without leaving the terminal.

With an in-house restaurant, spa, and lovely rooms, you can rest the moment you land and make your way to the cruise port the next morning.

A couple of hotels offer complimentary shuttles to the port. These are:

Canada Place cruise terminal is about 10 miles from the airport, so on a Sunday afternoon it should be about 1/2 hr from departing the airport to arrival at the cruise port.

The hotel/mall across the road from Canada Place has a food court/McDonalds. The closest Liquor Store is in Harbour Centre, which is across from Waterfront Skytrain/Seabus Station and is about 400 yds from Canada Place.

The only addition I'll make to Heidi's reply is that with HAL transfers you have two complete unknown delays - firstly how long Immigration/Customs will take (very much dependent on how many other flights touch down relatively close to yours), and how long HAL will have you sit around waiting to fill a bus! If you're the last two folks boarded on HAL shuttle, great - but you could be waiting another hour if they are expecting others on flights after yours. You could be at the pier any time from an hour after you touch down to ~2.5 hours after, with the best guess somewhere in the 90min ballpark.

I'd grill the HAL minion at luggage claim/arrivals hall (sometimes folks are waiting by the carousels, other times you have to schlep your own bags out through the secure doors) whether you have time to go grab some sammiches from the food court at the airport or if the bus will be leaving right away (in which case you'll have plenty of time to grab a bite at the pier).

From the Airport in Vancouver, I take the "SkyTrain"...the station is right across the street from baggage claim--virtually right in the terminal...Trains leave every few minutes and it's only a 25 minute ride to Waterfront Station--which puts you about a block from the cruise terminal...and, if you really have to eat something before getting on the ship, there's an A&W and a Subway as you leave the train station and a McDonald's a block away--right in front of Canada Place...and a Starbucks, of course...

OTOH, you can just get on the ship and hit the buffet...

The Skytrain is an excellent option, depending on time of day and amount of luggage. I have been on Skytrain many times, including the airport line, that I wouldn't want to have luggage.

Hey TerrydTx, Canada Customs allows up to two 750ML bottles of wine to enter into Canada with you. If you have a favorite bottle or two, pack them in your CHECKED luggage before departing home (it is permitted by the airline) and save yourself the hassles of looking for wine there (altho there are some great BC wines). Just be sure to wrap the bottles in a plastic bag each before padding them in your bag. Happy Sailing! 🍷 🍷

Outside of the AM/PM commute and any special events downtown you should have no problem with luggage. However, during the AM commute and prior to special events, going into Vancouver the trains can be very crowded shortly after leaving the airport.

It won't be a problem with luggage.

First the Canada Line trains were designed with the airport travellers in mind and they created areas where you can put your luggage while on the train.

Second, while the trains certainly do get crowded you are getting on at the airport which is the terminus station and getting off at Waterfront station which is the other terminal so you won't have trouble with luggage on the trains.

Personally I would not book one before noon at the absolute earliest.

How many options for flights to NC do you have?

Upon disembarking from the ship you must do Canadian customs and immigration. That takes time for a whole ship and more if there is more than one ship in port.

If your flight is to an American city then you’ll need time at the airport for USA Pre clearance.

I wouldn’t try for a flight before 2 pm.

Whether you are cruising on a mega-ship loaded with adrenaline-pumping activities, or a small vessel lavishing intimate vibes, these tips will help you get the most out of your trip.

Don’t grab the first deal you see on the internet, the best deals can often be had by booking directly with the cruise line, or with a travel agent. If space exists, both may potentially add a room upgrade, perhaps with a balcony, or a booking bonus. Booking bonuses are onboard “free cash” credits to spend on extras including: Wi-Fi, shore excursions, specialty dining, beverage packages, spa treatments, onboard shopping, or special activities like culinary classes.

If your itinerary visits foreign ports of call, it’s worth checking with individual country consulates for visa requirements. It’s possible the cruise line may cover visa requirements for the ship’s guided excursions, but not if you venture out independently.

Plan to arrive early

It’s worth arriving a day early at your embarkation point, even if it is in North America. Most cruise lines start boarding around noon and depart around the dinner hour. If your flight is delayed, the ship will not wait for you. You may need to arrange a flight or ground transportation to meet the ship at the next port at your own expense.

If you’ve bought the flight inclusive air-sea package, the cruise line bears responsibility to get you to the next port. If several air-sea passengers are delayed, the ship may postpone the departure. After booking, note your ship’s toll-free emergency number in case you have to inform them of a delay.

Think of the extra day as an extension of your holiday, a pre-holiday holiday if you will. You’ve paid for that first cruise day. Enjoy it to the max, feeling rested and raring to go. You’ll appreciate the day to unwind, perhaps take a walk or use the time to explore the port city. For example: for the Port of Miami, explore South Beach, or stroll through colourful Wynwood Walls, Miami’s street art museum.

If your cruise departs overseas, arriving two or three days early allows you to get over any jet lag, while giving you time to explore a new country. It’s worth considering the cruise line’s pre-cruise packages, as they include transfers from the airport to a well-situated hotel with full breakfast, a guided city tour, plus transfers to the cruise ship, and back to the airport after the cruise. For a recent Viking cruise on the Seine River, my Paris pre-cruise package – which originally seemed pricey – proved economical. In the height of the season, my package cost less than I would have paid for the same hotel room alone.

First things first

As soon as possible after booking, sign in to the cruise line’s reservation system or mobile app. This allows you to pre-book your preferred options.

The most desirable activities book up quickly. These may include specialty restaurant reservations, art or culinary classes, theatre productions, excursions, or once-in-a-lifetime experiences including submarine dives or helicopter flight-seeing. When it comes to excursions, book your top choices as soon as possible. For example, if you dream of visiting Rome on a Mediterranean cruise that stops in Civitavecchia, don’t chance missing out on your preferred guided excursion or a shuttle to the city centre.

While the ship’s app may have a calendar to peg your choices, it’s helpful to print out a simple calendar based on the cruise itinerary, noting the ship’s departure time from each port.

Book your boarding time as soon as possible to maximize your first day on board.

Research port excursions and activities

Research each port before booking the cruise line’s excursions. While excursions may be pricey, they can be time efficient. For example, Barcelona is easily explored independently, but if you’re keen to understand Gaudi’s architectural influence, the paid excursion takes you from place to place for a comprehensive view.

Independent touring may be best if you have specific interests in nature, culture, or history. Consider booking a private guide ahead of the voyage. Two companies with credible reputations for their English-speaking guides are ToursByLocals and Viator.

If you explore independently note the cruise departure time. Before taking a taxi to a remote area, ensure you can get a ride back.

Embarkation day – Let the fun begin

At the cruise terminal, prepare to show your passport, cruise ticket, pre-printed boarding pass, and credit card for onboard expenses. Be aware of the currency used for onboard charges. Most cruise lines charge in US dollars while some Europe-based ships (including Explora Journeys) may charge in Euros.

Your room may not be ready, so bring a bag with swimsuit, hat, suntan lotion, and your needs for the day. Your suitcase will be wisked away by porters. So, keep with you all essentials including medications, valuables, smart phone, and other technology.

After boarding, you will find lunch served in various locations, including the main pool deck.

Boarding time is when many people rush to book excursions, spa treatments, specialty restaurants, art or culinary classes, and – for mega-ships – reserve seating for theatre productions and ice shows. If you haven’t done so before boarding now is the time.

If you miss getting dinner reservations in a special Asian, French, Italian or steakhouse restaurant, try lunch, which is usually cheaper anyway. Spa treatments and access to the thermal suite – which may have a sauna, ice room and therapeutic pool – are most popular on sea days. If you’re budget conscious, wait to check the ship’s daily rosters for discount deals, usually given on port days.

Beverage packages

Before sailing, consider your drinking habits. Aside from all-inclusive cruises, most lines offer various packages including spirits, wine, beer and/or artisan coffee and tea. Unless you anticipate drinking a lot, you may be better off paying per drink. While it’s easy to flash your room card for a drink, you can economize by visiting self-serve stations for included water, juices, tea and regular coffee. Or enjoy your libations when discounted at happy hour specials.

Read the fine print

Unless your cruise is totally all-inclusive, beware of hidden costs, such as gratuities for beverages and spa services, or charges to access therapeutic pools, fitness classes or adult sundecks. Check your chits, especially for drinks or spa services, which may inconspicuously include a space for “optional” or second tip.

Wi-Fi communications at sea

Whatever your roaming package, use the ship’s Wi-Fi plan. Put your phone on airplane mode before boarding and sync to the cruise ship’s Wi-Fi. Leave it that way throughout the cruise, as even a second of satellite transmission may cause huge fees. Onboard Wi-Fi plans usually allow email, calling, social media, and internet surfing. The trick to saving pricey internet time is to create and save all the emails you want to send in a note or document file while offline. Then after you do log on, copy and paste the information into the email for a quick “send.”

Savvy packing

Check the dress code. Ensure you have layers and gear for the anticipated excursions. All ships have launderettes or laundry services. If you like to rinse favourite items in the sink, pack a plastic hanger or two to give them shape while drip drying.

Though it sounds tedious, bring everything you may possibly need: camera batteries, sunscreen, moisturizer, Tylenol, aspirin, Band-Aids, allergy medicine, lozenges, seasickness pills, plus emergency antidotes for constipation or diarrhea. Such items are pricey on board. With new ecology sustainability measures: some cruise lines no longer supply shower caps, or body lotion. Most of all, pack your patience and a smile.

Cruise ship carrying 1,500 passengers stuck in Spain port due to Bolivian passengers' visa problems

A cruise ship reportedly carrying 1,500 passengers was stuck Wednesday in the Spanish northeastern port of Barcelona due to the visa problems of a group of Bolivian passengers who were due to disembark there, officials said.

Authorities say 69 Bolivians were not being allowed to leave the ship because they lacked valid documents to enter the European border-free Schengen area. Solange Duarte, a Bolivian diplomat in Barcelona, told The Associated Press she received reports some of the stranded Bolivians had been duped into obtaining fake visas but had no further information.

"We have asked the families to indicate who has processed this visa and we have not gotten answers," she said, adding she heard it was possible the Bolivians would be transferred to a different ship.

Spain's national police was looking into the possibility of a fake visa scam, Duarte said.

Spanish state news agency Efe and other media said some 1,500 passengers were on board the MSC Armony hoping to continue the cruise to Croatia.

Bolivia's deputy foreign affairs minister, Fernando Perez, said the country was waiting "to see what the Spanish authorities decide what to do."

A statement from the Bolivian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said the Bolivian Embassy in Spain and the country's Consulate General in Barcelona "are carrying out the pertinent steps to address this case," coordinating with Spanish authorities, as well as with the MSC Cruises Company.

MSC Cruises said in a statement the Bolivians included families and children.

It said the "passengers appeared to have proper documentation upon boarding in Brazil. We have been informed by the authorities that the visas are not valid for entry into the Schengen area. As a result, passengers have not been able to disembark in Barcelona, which was their final destination."

The company said the ship remained in port while it works with authorities to facilitate the process.

The Schengen area is an ID-check-free travel zone comprising 29 European countries, most from the European Union.
