Groove Cruise Cabo Finalizes 2022 Lineup, Announces Daily Themes And Activities, Whet Foundation Nonprofit Initiatives, And More

After six years since the last West Coast sailing, Groove Cruise prepares to make a colossal comeback with ‘The Ascension’ sailing from Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas on Wednesday, October 19 – Monday, October 24.

Hosted upon the newly-renovated Norwegian Jewel, Groove Cruise Cabo will offer a truly immersive festival experience featuring five days filled with various themes, activities, and some of the finest acts in electronic music.

Groove Cruise veteran Green Velvet has just been announced as an additional headliner to join the likes of Dirtybird wizard Claude Vonstroke , underground tastemakers Desert Hearts , British trance icon Gareth Emery , and melodic bass maverick Said The Sky . Rounding out the roster, Groove Cruise has also enlisted ACRAZE , Blond:ish , Joel Corry , and MiTiS for direct support on the upcoming Cabo sailing.

Providing an all-encompassing experience for attendees, Groove Cruise has revealed the daily themes for the upcoming sailing to Cabo. The sailing will host both day and night themes daily, offering ten curated costume parties across the 120 hours on board to kick off the Halloween season.

Some of the 2022 themes will include a formal-themed ‘Burlesque & Bowties’ affair, fairytale and sci-fi inspired ‘Mythology & Moonlight’, a nod to Halloween and Day of the Dead with ‘Rave to the Grave’, and more.

In addition to the daily themes, fans can also expect a plethora of scheduled activities aboard the Norwegian Jewel. Catering to a vast audience, Groove Cruise will have an activity suited for everybody and all of the activities will feature a special appearance from one of the artists on the lineup. From artist-hosted panels and master classes to spicy food challenges and whiskey tastings, the activity programming is another reason Groove Cruise has created such a loyal fanbase over the years.

Groove Cruise’s 2022 programming will also feature an exclusive destination event on Friday, October 21 at the Taboo Beach Club and Confessions Skybar in Cabo San Lucas. Attendees will divulge into the beachside location as they enjoy two stages of music and performers from 12:00pm to 9:00pm. The epic adventure in Cabo San Lucas will allow fans to enjoy the idyllic paradise while still enjoying the ethos of Groove Cruise.

Groove Cruise has announced daily themes for the upcoming Cabo voyage. The 120-hour cruise will have day and night themes and ten costume parties to kick off Halloween. Themes for 2022 include ‘Burlesque & Bowties,’ ‘Mythology & Moonlight,’ ‘Rave to the Grave,’ and more.

In addition to daily themes, the Norwegian Jewel offers several activities. Groove Cruise will offer an activity for everyone, and all of them will feature a performer from the lineup. Groove Cruise’s active programming includes artist-hosted seminars, master courses, spicy food challenges, and whiskey tastings.

Groove Cruise’s 2022 schedule will include a unique destination event in Cabo San Lucas on October 21. Attendees will enjoy two stages of music and performances from 12pm-9pm. Groove Cruise lovers can enjoy Cabo San Lucas while still enjoying the Groove Cruise concept.

Rounding out the already-stacked roster of talent with legendary act Green Velvet, Groove Cruise Cabo’s lineup reflects why the festival has remained a leader in the US market for the past two decades.

In their most extensive ship renovation yet, the massive cruise ship boasts brand new venues for your partying pleasure. The ship’s theater, lounge, rooftop and pool deck are all equipped for top-notch productions. If you get thirsty, one of the 15 on-board bars will be able to serve you a refreshing cocktail. Need to detox after too much partying? Check out the Mandara spa, one of six hot tubs, or sweat it out in the fitness center. And when you need some fuel for your dancing, the complimentary restaurants are serving up everything from classic Irish pub food to French bistro faves and Brazilian steakhouse specialties.

Whet Travel, the Floridian company behind Groove Cruise, wants to create a world-class festival experience on the open ocean. For this fest, The Jewel will sail to Cabo San Lucas where it will dock at the Taboo Beach Club and Confessions Skybar. Once arrived there’s a  beachside party awaiting you complete with two beachside stages, pool bars, fire dancers, and other fun performances.

Groove Cruise Cabo 2022 is unique as it’s the only experience with artist-fan interaction on a large scale. Once the artists are on board, there’s really no getting off! The cruise has just announced 35 interactive artist-hosted activities, including fun beer games such as Beer Olympics and Smash Cup; whiskey, tequila, and wine tastings; workout classes and yoga; a pub crawl, Hot Pizza challenge, and poker tournament; and much more. Wouldn’t it be neat to spend your week among some of your favorite artists? Among the activities include a wine tasting with Acraze , a bean bag toss with  Carlo Lio , Bingo Revival hosted by  Claude Vonstroke , a scavenger hunt with  Deepfake , a blackjack tournament hosted by  Gene Farris , and so much more. Each of the activities is set to be hosted by one of the artists on the lineup so fans can partake in festival experiences unlike any other. Sounds like fun!

Additionally,  Norwegian Cruise Line  has lifted its vaccination requirement so everyone is welcome to come aboard for  Groove Cruise Cabo 2022 . If you aren’t vaccinated, be sure you get a proper test, either at home (supervised) or at a testing center. Earlier this year in January, Groove Cruise Orlando  reported an impressive  ZERO cases onboard for their first event back following the pandemic. That’s super impressive!

Groove Cruise wants to bring up and coming talent to the spotlight! They are bringing this to the forefront with Phase 2 of its  Cruisin’ For Kindness DJ contest  on  Twitch , which will be judged by renowned DJ/producers  MAX LOW,  Amidy, Casmalia, Gene Farris, Adam Scott,  and  Rico & Miella . All proceeds from the live stream will benefit Cabo charity organizations  Solmar Foundation  and  Heart4Cabo  via  Whet Travel ’s non-profit branch  Whet Foundation . 

Cruisin’ For Kindness selected the 22 best mixes of 250 entries which were aired live this past Saturday, September 10 from 12 pm – 11:30 pm EST. The eventual winners will receive so many prizes including a dream gig spinning at Groove Cruise Cabo 2022 , an oceanview stateroom accommodations for two, up to $600 in travel expenses, a swag bag with a special gift, an EDM Maniac Artist Spotlight article, and their winning mix featured on the Groove Cruise radio podcast. And the cruise wants to bring some good back to the world too! Started by Whet Travel ‘s founder  Jason Beukema ,  Whet Foundation  seeks to impact the communities visited by  Whet Travel cruises. They even invite cruise attendees to donate and volunteer at their events. The foundation gives back to the communities they visit via clothing, food, school supplies, beach and community cleanups, painting and art programs, purchasing needed items for facilities, repairs, and more. This is wonderful!

In tandem with  Groove Cruise Cabo 2022 , the  Whet Foundation  will be launching one of their biggest initiatives to date; visiting two facilities in Cabo San Lucas,  Solmar Foundation  and  Casa Hogar Orphanage  in partnership with  Heart4Cabo. At these events, attendees will serve breakfast, take part in various projects and interact with the children through live art, games, music, and costumes. Whet Foundation  will also raise money and collect donations for an initiative to build a house for a recently single mother, and purchase new appliances, cleaning supplies, and paint. Sounds like a dream.

Whet Foundation is also making mental health initiatives a big part of their agenda, which is wonderful. Recently, the organization hopped on an IG live with music mental health foundation When The Music Stops  and mental health advocacy art project  Ninobuni .  Groove Cruise Cabo is also set to host mental health panels, workshops, and art classes with a focus on Music, Balancing Mental Health, and Suicide Prevention aboard the ship during this year’s sailing.

Sounds like a good time, yeah?  Well, that’s exactly what I’ll be doing over Halloween weekend!

This all just happened out of nowhere, but I couldn’t be more thrilled to share that I’ll be attending the legendary event known as  THE GROOVE CRUISE .

This is the World’s Largest Floating Dance Music Festival, and I don’t think I’ve ever been more excited for one particular festival in my entire life…

If you have never heard of The Groove Cruise before, take a look at this small preview for what I’m about to embark on…

This is a very special event as it’s the first time The Groove Cruise is making the journey down to Cabo, and because it’s actually the longest festival they’ve ever thrown.  After looking at the itinerary and line-up, I know this is going to be a party I’ll never forget.

This is absolutely the perfect event for me.  It’s combining my passion for travel, music festivals, and photography all into one epic experience!

The line-up for this year’s GC Cabo is absolutely spectacular, and I know the soundtrack for this cruise is going to be nothing but the best electronic music.  While it might be a little more EDM / Trance focused than many of the other festivals I’ve attended recenntly — there are actually a ton of quality underground house & techno artists as well.  The main acts I’m looking forward to seeing are Dubfire, Mark Knight, Mendo, Uner, and Lee Foss.

The past month in California has been musically phenomenal as I recently attended CRSSD in San Diego, and spent 3 crazy days at Dirtybird Campout .  So I’m looking forward to continuing my time back in the U.S.A with non-stop incredible dance tunes.

Confession:  I’ve never been on a cruise before!  It’s always been something I’ve been wanted to do, but my family never takes cruises, and I never really had the opportunity to go on one with friends.

From what I’ve heard — you simply can’t beat the combination of a music festival + the cruising experience.

I’ll never forget when I was doing research for my article on the Top 25 Music Festivals in America To Experience Before You Die  , and discovering The Groove Cruise.  It seemed like the ultimate festival experience, and now I’ll be getting to do understand what it’s all about.

 The Norwegian Sun Cruise Liner  has a capacity of 1,936 guests, so this festival is definitely going to have that intimate feeling that I love so much.  Since everyone is on the same ship, it gives the chance for the attendees to interact with the artists, and become one big Groove Cruise family.

Did I mention that I’m going to CABO!!!?

While the majority of this epic 5-day festival is held on the ship, the cruise does dock in Mexico overnight for one epic day of dancing.  We’ll make our way to the incredible ME resort for an all-day pool party, and then continue the festivities on up a private beach with attendees dancing under the moonlight.

Deep House Yoga

While I may not be the biggest fan of Yoga, this would definitely be my preferred style of music to listen while striking a warrior pose.  There will be three Deep House Yoga sessions, and I hearby vow that I will attend at least one.  It might just be exactly what I need to keep the party going…

Groove Cruise Returns to Cabo, Next Up – Miami!

After four years, Whet Travel’s Groove Cruise made a triumphant return to the West Coast with ‘The Ascension,’ sailing from Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas aboard the recently refurbished Norwegian Jewel from Wednesday, October 19 to Monday, October 24. Welcoming nearly 2,500 attendees from all across the world, Groove Cruise Cabo marked another milestone for the incomparable event brand.

The unrivaled adventure hosted nine stages throughout the cruise ship with 120 hours of non-stop music paired with five day and night time themes that provided attendees with an all-encompassing experience. Some of these themes included brightly colored nautical theme ‘Nauti Neon’, ‘Burlesque and Bowties’ affair, fairytale and sci-fi inspired ‘Moonlight and Mythology,’ an aquatic ‘Under The Sea’ theme, a nod to Halloween with ‘Rave to the Grave’, and more.

In addition to the involved daily themes, Groove Cruise consistently bridges the gap between fans and artists with a slew of artist-hosted activities. This year, ‘The Ascension’ featured a tequila tasting with Said The Sky , a dinner with Gem & Tauri at the Norwegian Jewel’s Chin Chin restaurant, Poker Tournament with Ship Wrek and Sam Wolfe, and so much more.

This year’s Groove Cruise was met with 5D Martian Circus , an immersive and interactive art collective that melds music, visual art installations, and fashion with mind, body, and soul to bring everyone together to a higher plane. It included live instrumentation and provided cosmic jams that blended psychedelic rock with cerebral dance music.

Wednesday kicked off on a high note as both veteran and first-time attendees flooded the Norwegian Jewel prepared for a 5-day adventure unlike any other. Bringing the spirit of Groove Cruise alive, the festival kicked off with a stacked roster of talent.

At the Stardust Theatre, Relief Records hosted a stage takeover with Green Velvet , Claude VonStroke , Gene Farris, and Mary Droppinz including a surprise B2B set from longtime Groove Cruise veterans Claude VonStroke and Green Velvet. Future bass lovers enjoyed N3WPORT, Nurko, Blanke, Amidy, and more at the Bliss stage and attendees celebrated Trance DJ Myon’s birthday with his set at the Atrium Stage.

Additionally, the Embark party featured sets from Joel Corry , Sam Blacky, Adam Scott, and more on the Pool Stage. The first evening concluded with the highly-anticipated Desert Hearts Takeover hosted by Porky, Mikey Lion, Lee Reynolds, Marbs which featured a special Desert Hearts B2B on the Sports Court After Hours Stage.

On Thursday, ACRAZE packed out the Main Pool Stage with his electrifying set, and the stage was closed out with performances by Ship Wrek, Max Low, Mary Droppinz, and Electric Polar Bears. Artist activities included Wine Tasting with ACRAZE and Casmalia, a Pub Crawl with record label Hood Politics, and the Great Bingo Revival with Claude VonStroke.

Friday morning kicked off with a high-energy sunrise B2B between ACRAZE and Gene Farris. The programming for the day included an exclusive destination at Me Cabo Hotel where attendees enjoyed music at two-stages at Taboo Beach Club and Confessions Skybar, featuring sets from Ekonovah, Gem & Tauri, Scooter & Lavelle, BLOND:ISH, Sam Wolfe, and more. Marking another first for Groove Cruise, organizers hosted a special Fire Flyboarding performance from a ProFlyBoarder as the night closed out with a fireworks show.

Cabo San Lucas also gave attendees a chance to explore and participate in on shore activities ranging from on-shore excursions such as jet skiing, swimming with dolphins, boat tours, hanging out on the beach with breathtaking views of the Norwegian Jewel in the background and more.

While docked in Cabo, Whet Travel launched their biggest initiative to date with the Whet Foundation. The foundation visited Casa Hogar in Cabo San Lucas made famous by the Netflix movie Blue Miracle with Dennis Quaid and Jimmy Gonzalez, along with Solmar Foundation and Heart4Cabo . Nearly 100 volunteers served breakfast and interacted with children through live art, games, music and costumes. Whet Foundation raised money and collected donations for this initiative to give back to the communities of Cabo. Additional outreach initiatives included various mental health awareness panels and workshops hosted by When The Music Stops and Ninobuni.

On Saturday, artists making their Groove Cruise debuts made history starting with the Cloud 9 Takeover at the Stardust Theatre Stage with sets from Blanke, MitiS, Said The Sky, and Trivecta who later brought their crowd to the Bliss Stage where they threw an impromptu party with Gem & Tauri. Saturday’s fun ended with a special set from DEEPFAKE at the Main Pool Stage, a five and a half hour marathon sunrise set from Anthony Attalla preceded by a Carlo Lio set at the Sports Court After Hours Stage. The Casino saw a B2B from Casmalia and Speaker Honey, and attendees could auction off their non-monetary items in Frick Frack Blackjack at the Bliss Stage.

On Sunday, the Groove Cruise attendees, affectionately known as #GCFAM, were awakened with a Deep House Brunch with sets from CHZY, Gettoblaster, Lizzie Curious, Scotty Boy and more. Closing out the festivities, Said The Sky, Nurko, Blanke, and N3WPORT hosted the Sirens Sunset at the Pool Stage. As the cruise arrived back in Los Angeles, Green Velvet and Friends set that welcomed the Monday sunrise.

This thrilling and interactive experience gives Groove Cruise attendees a glimpse into what the almost sold out Groove Cruise Miami will emulate for its 35th sailing from Miami, Florida, to the private paradise of Labadee, Haiti aboard the state-of-the-art and award-winning Celebrity Summit from Thursday, January 19 – Monday, January, 23, 2023.

The cruise consists of 96 hours of non-stop music from more than 50 artists from around the world. Headliners include Swiss-South African deep house connoisseur Nora En Pure, German trance music legend Markus Schulz, the mysterious Claptone, and Bite This label head Jauz who will be performing a special ‘Off The Deep End’ set along with 70 more of the top artists in dance music.

Groove Cruise Cabo has revealed The Ascension, featuring top-tier electronic acts that are making this one of the best lineups of the year. Groove Cruise founder Jason Beukema swung by ahead of the upcoming Cabo sailing to give insight on the party at sea that also gives back.

If you speak with Jason Beukema for just a few minutes about his “babies” ( Groove Cruise , Whet Travel , and Whet Foundation ), we dare you not to get caught up in his enthusiasm. His passion is infectious and likely a huge part of what has made the Groove Cruise brand what it is today. Not only is his longstanding brand in the scene known for its amazing parties, themes, and destinations, but it also uses all that energy to do some good. In Jason Beukema’s words, “We want to leave the communities we visit in a better place than we found them.”

Aside from the annual editions of Groove Cruise, Jason Beukema also dedicated himself to charity with the Whet Foundation, which has so many initiatives we couldn’t touch on them all when we sat down to chat with him. That’s an amazing feat – to effectively be a successful festival organizer who spends more time figuring out how to give back rather than how to put more money in their pocket. Then again, shouldn’t this be the part of the PLUR ethos that festivalgoers claim to live by? Groove Cruise makes it easier for revelers to give back without figuring out the “how” in those efforts.

Beyond philanthropy, Groove Cruise sailings are wild parties with endless activities from the moment you board the ship until you disembark at your home port. Jason Beukema books boldfaced headliners to provide beautiful beats on the high seas, like Claude VonStroke , Markus Schulz , John Summit , Gareth Emery , and Blond:ish , to name a few. Additionally, cruisers visit many beautiful port cities, can partake in activities and parties off-ship and have 24/7 access to meals, drinks, and snacks.

Ahead of the upcoming embarkation of Groove Cruise Cabo, we caught up with the mastermind behind it all for a quality chat. Read on for the full interview with Jason Beukema, and again, we dare you not to get caught up in his enthusiasm!

Hi Jason, thanks for sitting down with us today. Many people know the Groove Cruise brand but not the Whet Travel and Whet Foundation brands. What are each of these, and how are they all related?

Whet Travel is the parent company, and whet means “to excite or to simulate.” “We excite people’s lives,” and that’s our tagline. I started Whet Travel and the Groove Cruise sub-brand at the same time, almost 19 years ago, and Whet Travel hosts festivals and corporate events on cruise ships. We charter cruise ships from Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, Celebrity, Princess, and MSC and transform them into a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the community we’re targeting. 

We’ve done a lot of music themes, including electronic music (Groove Cruise), rock, heavy metal, and country. There’s also a board game cruise coming up and a dental hygienist continuing education cruise called Smiles At Sea. We bring like-minded people together on a cruise to share their passion and lifestyle.

You’ve got several Groove Cruises upcoming. How is each of these similar and different?

Groove Cruise has been continuously sailing out of Miami and the South Florida area since 2004. We’ve also been sailing from the west coast since 2015, but not every year. The most significant differences are the ports and destinations. 

For example, we have Groove Cruise Cabo coming up in October, sailing from Los Angeles. We’ve also done Catalina Island and Sonata from there. Out of South Florida, we’ve sailed to the Bahamas, Cozumel, Mexico, Costa Maya, Mexico, and Jamaica. Our next one is coming in January and sails to Labadee, a private peninsula of Haiti. It’s my favorite cruise destination, and I’ve been on over 145 cruises! It’s absolutely stunning.

And then, in terms of the onboard experience, it’s pretty similar for each Groove Cruise, and the types of people that go are very similar.

You mentioned the October Groove Cruise Cabo sailing from Los Angeles. This cruise includes several Whet Foundation initiatives. Tell us a little about these initiatives in particular.

I started Whet Foundation 10 years ago, and it’s truly been a labor of love. It’s a 501(c)3, which means it’s a legitimate, tax-exempt organization that no one owns. I don’t own it. Yes, I started it, but it’s owned by the public, if you will. Finances are all transparent, which is important to me. We used to work with outside groups, but I wasn’t sure that the money was effectively getting to the kids and families that needed it, so I started Whet Foundation to oversee this.

The Whet Foundation component of Groove Cruise is called Destination Donation, and in Cabo, we’re working with a local orphanage. We ask them what they need, and then we ask everybody on the cruise to bring things like used cell phones, iPads, clothing, school supplies, and books. Somewhere between 50 to 100 volunteers will then participate in bringing these items to the kids. We’ll also cook for them, play games, and perhaps do an art project with them. 

One group needs a new refrigerator, so we’re buying them a commercial refrigerator. Another needs to build a home for a single mother, so we’re working to buy all the materials so they can build that home. We want to leave the communities we visit in a better place than we found them. And our favorite part is that when the post-cruise surveys come back, those that did the Destination Donation rate this as their most memorable experience!

We understand this cruise will visit Solmar Foundation and Heart4Cabo to serve breakfast and interact with local children. How did you select these programs, and what can attendees expect from these visits?

The actual facility is Casa Hogar, which is the orphanage we’re visiting. Heart4Cabo is an important partner, and they are made up of DJs, so we really connect with them. Attendees who volunteer get free transportation and priority departure from the ship. We all go to the orphanage and participate in activities with the kids. At the end of the day, they are bussed back to the Groove Cruise party and meet up with the rest of the attendees for the night. It’s a pretty amazing day to experience!

There’s also a mental health initiative, right?

Yes. Every human has dealt with mental health issues at some point, and for me, it was early in COVID. I was watching my baby, these cruise events, die overnight. I was depressed, and I didn’t know what to do. These issues are close to home, with my sister-in-law speaking publicly about her issues and even having spent a few months in a facility. This past January, our Groove Cruise production manager committed suicide. So this has been very personal.

After working through my own needs, I came up with a multi-track program. We’re going to have a bunch of artists talking about how they deal with mental health issues, how they deal with being on the road, how they deal with playing hundreds of shows a year, being in and out of nightclubs, partying, drugs, etc. That’s going to be an open conversation with several artists. 

Then we partnered with When The Music Stops for a suicide prevention track. Founder, Josh Donaldson, has been a total blessing to work with and is a suicide prevention counselor. He’s had his personal, very, very difficult things that he’s dealt with. 

If we save one person’s life or help someone have a mind-opening experience that puts them on a different trajectory for life, we call it the one-millimeter rule. That one-millimeter change is not a big change, but it’s a massive change over time. I think we’re doing the right thing.

You mention that the Destination Donation is often the most memorable for attendees, and they are obviously here for the parties, too. Aside from the incredible music from the likes of Green Velvet and Said The Sky, what other activities are in store?

Over a 5-day cruise, there are ten themes, one each day and night. The first thing after you board the ship is called Represent, so you can showcase where you are from, your heritage, and your favorite sports team – it’s a bit of an icebreaker. Then there are so many other themes like Burlesque & Bowties, Naughty Neon, Mythology & Moonlight, and Flotation Infatuation, to name a few. Regardless of the activities that go along, people get into them! It’s less awkward than doing this at home because you are in a judgment-free zone from the moment you get dressed to the moment you hit your bed. You can also change outfits many times a day because your room is just a few minutes away.

For the activities, it’s really cool because we’re one of the few places you can get artist interaction. So you can play bingo with Claude VonStroke, do a tequila tasting with Said The Sky, or do a hot pizza challenge with Trivecta.

You already mentioned the recurring ports for Groove Cruise. Are you considering adding others in the future?

There was a Groove Cruise New York in 2009 that went to St. John in New Brunswick, Canada. Part of the challenge with New York is that for a short cruise can only go there or to Bermuda. And we’ve also done one from Barcelona to Ibiza. We’re always looking at New York and other options like Texas, the Great Lakes, or perhaps Asia.

Is there anything else that Groove Cruise fans should look forward to for 2023 and beyond?

I’m not skipping over West Coast 2023; we’re still seeing if that’s an option. But January 2024 will be the 20-year anniversary and the biggest ship we’ve ever done. The most ridiculous beach parties, the most insane lineup, we’re going all out. We have this partnership with Martian Circus, a 5D experience – they play improvised music for 8 to 10 hours straight. They bring in all this decor, actors, performers, and band members. I’m not sure what it will turn into, but it sounds cool!

And we’re always listening to our captains. They steer the ship and send us ideas. Hey, I saw this at this festival. That’s how I’ve prided myself in building Groove Cruise over the years, just listening to our captains.

One last fun question. What’s your favorite food or activity offered on the Groove Cruise ships?

Ah, good question! My favorite food is definitely soft-serve ice cream. As soon as I get on a cruise ship, I don’t know what it is that comes over me because I don’t really eat ice cream, but I beeline straight to the free ice cream machine, and I get my chocolate vanilla twist. I eat several of those every day. And for my favorite activity, it’s definitely the Whet Foundation destination donation experience. That one, for sure!
