Biking Tours in Antigua

Antigua is nestled in a valley surrounded by towering volcanoes and mountain ridges, all a short ride away. On an OTO Antigua bike tour, you’ll start your rides from our shop in town. From there, you’ll wind through historic cobblestone streets, into the surrounding farmlands, and up to the mountain and volcanic ridges. We offer multiple mountain biking tours that are sure to satiate the adventure thirst of beginners and the most seasoned advanced riders.

Antigua Highlights:

  • Bike through agricultural fields of corn, peas, the citrus nísperos, coffee and avocado trees.
  • Ride through mountainside villages and get a glimpse of local life
  • Visit local villages like Pastores, the leather ‘Boot Town’ of Guatemala, San Antonio Aguas Calientes, known for local weavers, and more!

We did an 8 mile mixed terrain bike ride from Old Town Outfitters' office in the heart of Antigua, up the side of Volcan de Agua, and ending at a fantastic new brewery "Catorce". The cycling guides are excellent, and they cater to each individual cyclist's needs and abilities. All of the Old Town Outfitters staff were friendly, accommodating, and professional. If you're headed to Antigua or the surrounding area, and you want an adventure offered by a reliable company that knows their stuff, I couldn't recommend Old Town Outfitters more highly!

Yes. In general, Antigua Guatemala is very safe but precautions should still be exercised. Antigua is one of the safest cities in all of Guatemala. In the daytime, the charming cobblestone streets of Antigua are safe for tourists, even if you are traveling alone. At night, the streets are equally safe, but more precautions should be taken to not make yourself an easy target by walking alone or under the influence.

Antigua’s elevation is 5,029 feet (1,533 meters). From Antigua, you can see multiple volcanoes in the distance including Acatenango, which rises up to 13,045 feet (3,976 meters)

The weather in Antigua and much of Guatemala is pleasant year-round. The rainy season runs from April through October. During the rainy season, it is common to have clear mornings and afternoon storms. The day and nighttime temperatures do not fluctuate throughout the year very much. The dry season is primarily from November through March. Clearer skies from December through February bring slightly warmer days and cooler nights.

Although Antigua sits on a huge aquifer and is blessed with good clean water, the delivery system is antiquated and thus tap water should not be drunk. Fresh filtered water and bottled water is readily available around town and certainly on every OTO trip.

Can I use $USD, Euros, etc?The local currency is called the Quetzal (ket-zahl) and is roughly 7.5 to 1 USD. You may find that you can use USD in some establishments in Antigua and other touristy spots, but Q is the preferred currency in Guatemala.

There are some public transport options to get you to and from, but the best way to get to Antigua is to send us your flight info and let us come pick you up from the airport upon your arrival.

What our customers says

guatemala antigua tours

Joyce Verduyn

Soy Tours Antigua is the best pick to do this! The trekking is hard but they take enough rest, meals are good and the guides know what they are doing. When I got supersick the brought me down in the night because I needed to go down. Down I could take a shower and they gave me bed to sleep in untill the group was back. I am super thankfull that the took care of me so well.

guatemala antigua tours

David Angove

My trek with Soy Tours Antigua is one of the best experiences I have ever had. The guides were fantastic, the meals were really tasty and filling. Everything is set up at base camp by the time you get there, so you don’t need to worry about that. I’m super unfit but I did it, and the views of Fuego erupting and the sunrise from the summit of Acatenango made it 100% worth it.

guatemala antigua tours

Go with Soy Tours Antigua, it was the most incredible experience of my travels to date. The guides were amazing and organized, our tents to be set up by the time we reached base camp (a real benefit not having to carry tents) as it is a tough hike, but the views are more than worth it! Everything was really well organized from start to finish and I couldn’t recommend him more. The money also goes back to advancing the community.

“Once you start it, the trip never ends, it is repeated again and again in silent rooms. The mind can never disconnect from the journey.”
“In twenty years you will be more disappointed by the things you did not do than by the ones you did. So untie the ropes and sail away from the harbor. Catch the wind with your candles. Explore, Dream, Discover.”

27 Best Things to Do in Antigua, Guatemala

Home » Blog » Guatemala » 27 Best Things to Do in Antigua, Guatemala

Visiting the historic center of Antigua should be on every traveler’s bucket list. With deep cultural roots and adventurous activities nearby like hiking Acatenango Volcano, there are so many exciting things to do in Antigua, Guatemala. Be careful, you may fall in love with this city and never want to leave.

Antigua Guatemala

The colorful colonial town of Antigua, Guatemala boasts cobblestone streets, cute cafes and volcanoes looming in the distance. This city is unarguably charming and easy to fall in love with.

If I had a dollar for each traveler I who said “Antigua is my favorite city in all of Central America!”, I’d be a millionaire…  ermmm, well I guess I’d have around 15 dollars.  But still.

Upon first glance, it reminded us of  San Cristobal de las Casas , our favorite town we visited in Mexico. So yeah, we definitely have a soft spot for Antigua, and we have a feeling you’ll fall for it too!

There are plenty of things to do in and around Antigua, and we’re going to share our favorites so you can experience the best this city has to offer!

Antigua is not the only highlight of this incredible country.  Check out  Unforgettable Things to Do in Guatemala  next!

Best things to do in Antigua, Guatemala

If you’re looking for the very best things to do in Antigua, here are our top recommendations:

  • See a volcano erupt up close
  • View the city from Cerro de la Cruz viewpoint
  • Visit Caoba Farms
  • Take a free walking tour
  • Shop for handicrafts

Keep reading for more detailed information on each of these things and more ideas of fun things to do in Antigua, Guatemala.

1. See a volcano erupt up close

Hiking Acatenango Volcano Guatemala

Watching Volcano Fuego erupt is one of the highlights of any Guatemala trip. You’ll spend the night at a base camp on neighboring Acatenango Volcano that overlooks Fuego, which is famous for its frequent eruptions*. (Like every 30 minutes or so!)

Cozy up near the bonfire and watch hot lava spew over the edge of the volcano at eye level across the valley. You can do this as a day trip, but it’s highly recommended to do the overnight trek instead.

Fun Fact: Guatemala has 37 named volcanoes, and 3 of those are still active. One of them being Volcan Fuego.

Hiking Acatenango Volcano Guatemala

It is important to note this trek is not for the faint of heart. The hike itself is a grueling 4-6 hour hike, straight uphill.

Near the top, you’ll likely notice the effects of high altitude, like a headache, dizziness or shortness of breath. And that doesn’t include the chilly nighttime temperatures and the fact that you may be sleeping in a tent with strangers.

2. View the city from Cerro de la Cruz viewpoint

Cerro de la Cruz viewpoint Antigua Guatemala

For a fantastic view of Antigua, the short walk to Cerro de la Cruz is a must. The name, which translates to “Hill of the Cross” is a pretty self-explanatory description of what you’ll find here.

If you’re lucky and are visiting on a clear day, you’ll get a stunning view of the volcano looming in the distance.

3. Visit Caoba Farms

Caoba Farms Antigua Guatemala

Just a short walk from the city center,  Caoba Farms  is a place you should definitely plan to visit during your time in Antigua.

Founded in 2004, the vision behind Caoba was “to contribute to a more environmentally sustainable world through the provision of a community space.”

They’ve achieved this vision in not only providing fresh organic produce to local households and restaurants, but also in creating a learning center which provides permaculture courses and volunteer opportunities.

First, stroll through the beautiful gardens and to see how their food is grown. If you’re lucky, Alex, the owner, will guide you on a tour and share his boundless knowledge of farming practices with you. Then dine in their onsite farm-to-table restaurant where you’ll get to taste the fresh and delicious food for yourself.

Caoba Farms food Antigua Guatemala

With a variety of international dishes as well as traditional Guatemalan cuisine and options for vegetarians, there is something for everyone here. And you’ll feel good knowing where the food you’re eating comes from.

If you’re feeling like a midday pick-me-up, pair your meal with one of the locally brewed beers they serve on tap.

Tip:  Beware that Caoba Farms Restaurant is only open on weekends, and Thursdays/Fridays beginning in March 2021. The restaurant is super popular to call ahead to make a reservation on weekends or expect to wait up to an hour for a table.

Other events at Caoba Farm:

  • Farmer’s Market:  Every Saturday vendors bring out their tables and sell a variety of handicrafts while live music plays.
  • Flea Market:  The first Sunday of the month, you’ll find a variety of second-hand items for sale, live music, food and drink stands, and activities for children.
  • Free Yoga:  Saturdays from 8 – 9:00 a.m. Check the schedule at  Om Where You Roam Yoga  to register.
  • Butterfly House:  Open Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. (Admission: Q15)

4. Take a free walking tour

Antigua Guatemala walking

If you know us, you know we love free walking tours. It’s our favorite way to get our bearings when we first arrive in a new place.

It’s a great way to get a local perspective on the city and its history. Plus, your tour guides can often turn out to be great resources for discovering the best food spots or hidden gems of the city.

Not all free walking tours are made equal and we’ve certainly had ones we’ve enjoyed better than others. However, we’ve always had good experiences with Guru Walk.

There are plenty of options for different free walking tours of Antigua on Guru Walk , just browse the site to find one that works for you.

Some sites you may be able to visit on your Antigua tour include:

  • Central Park ( Parque Central ) and the Central Plaza ( Plaza Mayor )
  • The Arch of Santa Catalina
  • Hotel Casa Santo Domingo
  • La Merced Church
  • The Central Market ( Mercado Central )
  • San Francisco Church
  • San Jose Cathedral (aka the Antigua Guatemala Cathedral)
  • Ruins of El Carmen
Insider tip: Just remember “free” walking tours are generally tip-based and you will be expected to pay what you think the tour is worth through tipping your guide.

5. Shop for handicrafts

handicrafts shopping Antigua Guatemala

Guatemala is known for beautiful artisan goods, and if you’re anything like us, you’ll want to take something home to remember your trip by.

While the best handicraft shopping in Guatemala can be found at the  Chichicastenago Market near Lake Atitlan , you can certainly find some great souvenirs in Antigua.

Here are 3 handicraft markets to check out:

  • Nim’Pot :  This is actually a retail shop that sells consignment goods from local artists. While you can’t barter here, it’s really well laid-out and you can see pretty much all the types of handicrafts you’ll find in the country.  We wandered around to get an idea of what price is fair for some of the items we wanted, and we purchased them elsewhere from the artists themselves.
  • Mercado de Artesanias :  Inside this market, you’ll find lots of little stands with vendors selling all types of goods. Again, bargaining is key, as the initial price is usually much higher than you should pay.
  • El Carmen Ruins :  On weekdays, this market is located indoors, but if you’re visiting on a weekend, you’ll find vendors set up inside the stunning El Carmen Ruins. Prices start a bit high, so be prepared to bargain.

Bargaining tips

  • Walk around the whole market first and get a few different prices before buying something.
  • Be prepared to walk away. Often, as soon as you turn to leave, the price will “magically” drop.
  • Carry small denominations of bills so you’re not stuck in an awkward situation handing over a huge bill after working hard to get the price down.
  • Don’t just talk numbers. Try to get to know the artist, how long it takes them to make their work, what other things they make, where they are from. Being friendly, even with minimal Spanish, will go a long way.
  • While bargaining can be fun, we always encourage our readers to be mindful and willing to pay a fair price, as this is the artists’ livelihood.

6. Toast marshmallows on Volcan Pacaya

Volcan Pacaya Antigua Guatemala (GYG)

Pacaya Volcano is the most accessible volcano, making it also the most visited and one of the best things to do in Antigua.

The hike to the top covers an elevation gain of around 1,500 feet and takes around 2 hours, depending on your fitness level. And if hiking just ain’t your thing, you can also rent a horse to bring you to the top for around Q300 (or $40 USD).

Once at the top, you can experience the moon-like landscape and even toast marshmallows over hot rocks. But don’t expect red, flowing lava here – you’ll have to venture to Volcan Fuego to see that.

7. Take a chocolate making workshop

chocolate workshop Antigua Guatemala

Ek Chuah is a family-owned cholateria in Antigua committed to supporting local vendors and selling only the highest quality products with 100% Guatemalan roots. They offer a chocolate making workshop where you can learn about the stages of chocolate production “from the cocoa bean to that delicious melt-in-your-mouth bar.”

During the workshop you will roast the cocoa and learn how to make an infusion to create the traditional Mayan drink with chili and honey. You will also have the opportunity to mold your own chocolate bars, decorating them with whatever extras you prefer.

The 90-minute workshop costs Q150 per person and is offered 3 times daily. There is also an Express workshop that covers just the bean to bar process in 45 minutes and costs only Q100. You can book your workshop online at  Ek Chuah .

Alternative: Check out the Chocolate Museum

Located on the main drag, the chocolate museum is a popular place to stop in while wandering the town. There are exhibits that describe the chocolate making process, and you can of course find all sorts of the stuff to taste and purchase.

8. Self-guided ruins tour

Antigua Guatemala ruins

Antigua was built in an earthquake-prone region, and a massive earthquake in 1773 destroyed much of the town.  However, some of the main monuments in town were preserved and can still be seen today.

Throughout the city, you’ll find a handful of churches, a monastery, a convent and even a school that date back as early as 16th century.

Download this  self-guided tour  on your phone to get a bit of the history between 6 of the ruins in Antigua.

The sites featured in this guide include:

  • Church of Candelaria (ruins)
  • Church of Santa Rosa (ruins)
  • Church of Santo Domingo (ruins)
  • Convent of the Capuchins
  • El Carmen Church (ruins)
  • Santa Clara Convent and Church
  • San Jose Cathedral (ruins)
  • Church and School of the Society of Jesus (ruins)
  • San Jeronimo Convent (ruins)
  • La Recolección (ruins)

9. Photograph the famous arch

The most iconic sight in the city, Arco de Santa Catalina, is a must-see while in Antigua. Make sure you bring your camera, because it is stunning.

On a clear day, you will have a fantastic view of Volcano Agua. And if you’re lucky enough to be in Antigua during Semana Santa , or Holy Week, be sure to wander around this area as it will be all decked out in colorful decorations!

What is the purpose of this arch, you ask? Well, the building on the west side of the arch was used as a convent back in the day. Eventually, they expanded and bought a building on the other side of the street as well.

But since the nuns were supposed to live in isolation, they needed a way to cross the street without being bothered. Solution: Build a passageway inside an arch! And what a beautiful solution it was.

Insider Tip:  For the best photo ops, go early in the morning, because you’re not the only one who wants a picture of this beauty, and the crowds get thicker in the afternoon. Plus, you’ll have a better chance of getting a clear sky.

10. Cheers with a view at a rooftop bar

rooftop bar Antigua Guatemala

Antigua is beautiful from above, and luckily, there are a handful of great places you can enjoy a drink while glimpsing the city’s colorful architecture and charming cobblestone streets.

  • Cafe Sky :  Likely the most popular rooftop bar in the city, Cafe Sky offers tasty cocktails with a fantastic view.
  • Los Tres Tiempos :  With excellent food and just as noteworthy views, this is a great choice if you’re looking for dinner with a view.
  • Antigua Brewing Company  (and Kafka restaurant): If it’s craft beer you’re after, look no further than ABC (aka Antigua Brewing Company).
  • Rooftop Antigua :  In partnership with Bella Vista Coffee, this unassuming shop leads to a rooftop with beautiful views and a delicious menu (not to mention top-notch Guatemalan coffee). It’s open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

11. Take a cooking class

Pepián Cooking Class (DLG)

While Guatemalan cuisine is not as well-known as its northern neighbor (aka Mexico!), taking a cooking class will be a surefire way to delve in and try more than just rice and beans.

We’ve always been huge fans of taking cooking classes on our travels because it gives us deeper insight into the culture.

There are a handful of great cooking schools in Antigua to choose from.

But if you want to support locals and make sure your money is going back into the community, we’d recommend booking a  Pepian cooking workshop through De La Gente . The workshop is $35 USD per person and makes for a great experience, plus it includes a tasty meal!

Alternative:  If you want to learn more about food in Antigua, take a  walking food tour . Take a morning and learn about various foods in the city, where and what locals eat and you’ll get samples along the way.

12. Try pepián

Pepian Antigua Guatemala

Considered by many as Guatemala’s national dish, this hearty meat and vegetable stew can be found everywhere from street vendors (for a few dollars) to restaurants ($5-15) to locals’ homes.

It is said to be a fusion of flavors from both Mayan and Spanish culture, and is absolutely delicious!

Here are some top restaurants to try pepián:

  • Rincón Típico
  • Los Tres Tiempos
  • La Cuevita de los Urquizú

Or for the best pepián you’ll try, learn how to make it yourself in a cooking class. Read more below…

13. Hike the Corazon de Agua trail

Corazon de Agua hike Antigua Guatemala

  • Distance: 2.9-mile loop (4.6 km)
  • Elevation gain: 1,184 ft / 361 m
  • Difficulty rating: moderate
  • View the trail notes

If you’re itching to get out of the city and into nature, another popular hike to do near Antigua is the Corazón de Agua trail.

This 3-mile (4.6 km) loop trail takes you through the Corazón de Agua Ecological Park. At the top of the hike you’ll reach a small developed park with views for miles in every direction.

The hike itself is moderate and can be done by hikers of every fitness level.

Tip:  Pack a picnic lunch and make use of the tables and picnic benches at the top while enjoying the views.

14. Try a cocktail in a secret speakeasy

Ulew cocktail bar Antigua Guatemala

Inspired by the prohibition-era in the United States, speakeasy cocktail bars are popping up in destinations all over the world these days, and Antigua is no exception.

Ulew Cocktail Bar is a true hidden gem in the city. Located beneath the Antigua Brewing Company, you’ll have to enter the brewery first, and then enter the “secret” cocktail cave through the phone booth in the corner.

The bar itself is quite small and feels a bit like you’re in a cave rather than a fancy cocktail lounge.

With no official menu, the skilled mixologists will ask you a few questions about your taste preferences and whip up something just for you . They even earn extra points for creativity and presentation.

15. Have brunch at a macadamia farm

Valhalla Macadamia Farm brunch Antigua Guatemala

If you haven’t caught on yet, there are tons of farms in and around Antigua, each as unique as the next. The Valhalla Macadamia Farm is just a 15 minute Uber ride outside the city and well-worth a visit to discover their indulgent brunch menu.

Once you’ve gorged yourself on macadamia pancakes and lattes and/or smoothies made with macadamia nut milk (don’t worry they have a full menu with non-macadamia products if that’s not your thing), you can take a quick free tour of the farm in which you can learn about how the nuts are grown and harvested.

The best part of the tour? Well actually there are two…

Valhalla Macademia Farm Antigua Guatemala 2

First, you will get to try some macadamia nuts and chocolate samples that are lip-smackingly delicious.

Second, you are offered a free facial massage to demonstrate the benefits of macadamia oil on the skin. Picture kicking back in a cushy armchair while your face and head get massaged for a few minutes. It’s a truly relaxing experience!

If you are now in the mood for some more relaxation, head over to their on-site spa where you can indulge in a deep tissue massage or facial.

16. See live music at Cerveceria 14 brewery

Cerveceria 14 Antigua Guatemala

If you love craft beer as much as we do, you won’t be at a loss during your Antigua travels. There is actually quite a nice craft beer scene here and the pinnacle is Cerveceria 14.

Located on a 7-acre farm just a 15-minute Uber ride from downtown Antigua, this brewery is a great place for kicking back and enjoying the sunshine and volcano views with a pint of good beer.

Not a beer lover? Don’t worry! The brewery is set up for fun for the whole family.

Surrounded by views of the volcanoes of the Panchoy Valley, there is plenty of green space to lounge, a large park and play area for children, multiple full bars (they serve more than just beer here!) and lots of tasty food options. You can also take a tour of their 15-barrel brewery if that’s what you’re into.

Oh yeah, and of course there is live music! A large stage makes up a natural amphitheater and hosts both local and international musical acts on weekends.

17. Eat world-famous Texas BBQ

Pappy's BBQ Antigua Guatemala

Yes, you read that right… Texas BBQ, right in the heart of Antigua!

Pappy’s BBQ is an Antigua staple that is not to be missed for those meat-lovers traveling in Antigua. Their traditional Texas-style BBQ is slow cooked using white oak in their handmade pits.

Prepared with consistency and care, their menu features all your traditional BBQ favorites such as ribs, brisket and pulled pork. Their Pappy’s Burger is the best burger you’ll find in Antigua and the grilled cheese rib meat sandwich is one for the books.

18. Tour a coffee farm

Coffee farm tour Antigua Guatemala

The region surrounding Antigua produces high quality beans that are shipped around the world; and it’s likely that they have ended up in your mug on more than one occasion.

Get a deeper understanding of where your favorite morning beverage comes from, and meet the people responsible for bringing it to you.

De La Gente  translates to “of the people”, and this organization does just that: it focuses on the people behind the coffee. Tour a small family-run coffee farm to learn about the process, and know that your money is going directly to better their lives.

19. Visit the Mercado

Mercado Antigua Guatemala

No matter where in the world we are traveling, we love visiting local markets all around the world. It is a great way to experience a taste of local life and get a feel for what ingredients and items are important in the culture.

At the main Mercado in Antigua, you’ll find everything from produce to clothing, to freshly butchered meats and fish.

While the market is open every day from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., the main market days are Monday, Thursday and Saturday, and will be significantly busier (that may be more exciting or more frustrating, depending on what vibe you’re looking for).

Insider Tip:  Whenever eating produce in Guatemala, be sure to wash it thoroughly with filtered water. You don’t wanna know what happens when you don’t…

How to get there:  The easiest entry point is at the end of  3rd Calle Poniente  and  4a Calle Poniente.

20. Check out Casa Santo Domingo

Casa Santo Domingo Antigua Guatemala

If you’re wondering why we are suggesting you go to a hotel, let us explain…

Casa Santo Domingo is so much more than just a hotel. It’s an Antigua institution. The ruins of the historical church and monastery (dating back to the 17th century!) have been transformed and built up around to become a combination hotel, restaurant, spa and museum.

There are 6 permanent museums and 2 art galleries with rotating temporary exhibits at Casa Santo Domingo. Wander around their indoor and outdoor settings and take in the art alongside the 17th century ruins.

Casa Santo Domingo spa Antigua Guatemala

You can get a day pass to the spa and book a 60-minute massage for under $100! Did I mention the spa includes indoor and outdoor areas for sunbathing around a private pool, wet and dry saunas, jacuzzis, cold baths and a variety of other wellness treatments.

If you’re looking for a day of relaxation (especially after something like the Acatenango trek!) this is the perfect place to land.

21. See the artwork of the “Guatemalan Picasso” for free

Santo Domingo del Cerro is an open-air gallery houses the works of Guatemalan artists, the most famous of whom is Efrain Recinos. Known widely as the “Guatemalan Picasso”, it’s a wonder you can see his works (as well as the works of many more artists) free of charge!

This art gallery is open every day except Mondays, and the Hotel Santo Domingo offers free shuttles every hour.

22. Pay a visit to the quirky town of Hobbitenango

Hobbitonengo Antigua Guatemala

If your mind just went to the Lord of the Rings and you’re picturing the pint-sized movie set of Hobbiton that tourists come to visit on a  trip to New Zealand , you wouldn’t be that far off. Hobbitenango is a hobbit-themed eco park, restaurant and hotel situated high on a mountaintop outside of Antigua.

The destination is a popular visit for local families from all over the surrounding region and if you come on a weekend, you’ll surely run into crowds.

Nevertheless, it’s a quick and fun experience to walk around the themed lands, take in the stunning views of the surrounding volcano peaks and take lots of cheesy Hobbit-themed photos! If you’re really feeling adventurous, you can stay a night in one of the hobbit houses that were built to look just like those on the set of Lord of the Rings.

Hobbitonengo Antigua Guatemala 3

To get to Hobbitenango, take an Uber about 25-minutes northeast of Antigua. Your Uber driver will drop you off at the ticket office where you can purchase a day pass for Q25 per person. Then you’ll have to wait in line for the shuttle to bring you up the incredibly steep dirt road to the park entrance.

Tip:  These lines can take really long on weekends. Another option is to take the walking path, but be prepared for the steep incline, a bit of dust, and make sure you wear the right footwear!

Hobbitonengo Antigua Guatemala 4

Hobbitenango has 2 restaurants, a pub, activities for children, and 26 distinct areas to explore. Have a stroll around the grounds, try your hand at axe throwing or archery, and be sure to get a photo of yourself on the giant’s hand looking out over the valley.

With no wifi, this is the perfect place to disconnect from technology and reconnect with your travel partners and nature.

Tip:  It can also get really chilly up there, so it’s a good idea to wear layers. There is a small stand at the park entrance selling second-hand sweaters and jackets if you get desperate.

23. Take a yoga class

yoga in Antigua Guatemala

While many yogis flock to Lake Atitlan to get their downward dog on, Antigua has a few yoga studios where you can deepen your practice, or just stretch out after a bumpy bus ride (a real struggle!).

Whether you’re staying in Antigua for a while (trust us, it has a way of drawing you in!), or just exploring for a few days, you can drop into a studio and get a flow in.

Here are two of the most popular yoga studios in Antigua:

  • Shakti Shala  – With an onsite smoothie bar, Shakti Shala is one of the most developed studios in Antigua. They offer a variety of classes for all levels and the drop in rate is Q55 ($8 USD).
  • YogAntigua  – Offering a variety of courses, from the typical flows to aerial yoga, YogAntigua is a good choice for a drop in class. Drop in classes start at Q70 ($9 USD).
  • Om Where You Roam  – Check their calendar to find yoga classes in Antigua that are held outside of studios, sometimes on a donation basis.

24. Practice your Spanish

Spanish Antigua Guatemala

If you are looking for a city to base yourself in while practicing your Spanish, we can’t think of many options better than Antigua. It is the perfect size: with lots to do (aka all the things on this list!), yet small enough to make you feel at home, we could see ourselves staying a while.

Antigua es una ciudad muy hermosa y divertida.  After your class, you’ll know what that means!

There are a few Spanish courses out there, but after doing a bit of research, the offering from  Spanish Academy Antiguena  seems to be one of the best.

25. Find your groove at Salsa lessons

What better place to learn Salsa than in Latin America? Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to move your hips because Salsa clubs are plentiful in Antigua.

You can sign up for private lessons, or show up to one of many free lesson nights at a Salsa club to get some beginner tips. Here are some of the best places in Antigua offering free Salsa classes:

  • La Sala :   Every Sunday, 8 – 9:00 p.m.
  • New Sensations : Mondays & Thursdays at 5:00 p.m.

26. Stay on an eco farm

Earth Lodge View - Credit: Earth Lodge

Located 8 kilometers outside of Antigua,  Earth Lodge  offers a tranquil escape from the city center. With stunning volcano views and famously delicious home cooking, you might just fall in love with this special eco-friendly lodge and avocado farm.

Stay in a magical treehouse and make your childhood dreams come true! Or if you have flexible travel plans, stay a little longer as a volunteer. The minimum stay is 6 weeks, but many volunteers stay even longer.

27. Take a sunset ATV tour

Antigua ATV Sunset Tour (Viator)

If you have a need for speed, joining this half-day excursion in the mountains, just might be one of your favorite things to do in Antigua, Guatemala.

This adventurous tour lasts for 4-5 hours and includes watching the sunset over the city from some of the best viewpoints at Hobbitenango. Pick up and drop off in Antigua makes it an easy way to get outside of the city while visiting, and a local guide will give you all the information along the way.

What former participants are saying:

“Really worth it. The experience was sooo nice. I recommend it to see the most beautiful sunset in Antigua.” – Stephanie, January 2023

How many days do you need in Antigua, Guatemala?

Antigua Guatemala

The ideal amount of time to spend in Antigua, Guatemala really depends on your interests and travel pace.

For a well-rounded experience, we’d suggest spending 3-5 days in Antigua if you’re traveling around and planning to hit all the things to see in Guatemala .

This time frame allows you to explore the charming cobblestone streets, visit historical sites such as the colonial churches and ruins, enjoy the local cuisine, and take part in any nearby activities or day trips. Be sure to factor in 2 extra days if you plan to do the Acatenango Volcano overnight hike .

Best time to visit Antigua, Guatemala

The best time to visit Antigua, Guatemala, is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. This period experiences lower rainfall, making it more comfortable for exploring the city and its surroundings. The weather is generally pleasant, with warm days and cooler nights .

If you want to avoid crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of late April to early June or September to early November. During these times, the weather is still favorable, but there are fewer tourists.

However, keep in mind that Antigua, Guatemala sits at an elevation of just over 5,000 ft (1,545 m) so its climate is much cooler than what you’d experience on the coasts.

Tips for visiting

Santa Catalina Arch Antigua Guatemala

Here are some of our top tips for making the most of your visit to Antigua, Guatemala.

  • Bring comfortable walking shoes. Antigua’s cobblestone streets can be uneven, so wear comfortable footwear to navigate the city without stress.
  • Pack layers as the weather can vary. Light clothing for daytime explorations and a sweater or jacket for cooler evenings is advisable.
  • Beware of altitude sickness. Antigua is at a higher altitude (just over 5,000 ft), so take it easy the first day to acclimate. Stay hydrated and be mindful of any altitude-related symptoms.
  • Bring your debit card to withdraw local currency from ATMs. While credit cards are widely accepted, having some cash, especially in smaller denominations, is useful for local markets and transportation.
  • Learn basic Spanish phrases. While many people in tourist areas speak English, learning a few basic Spanish phrases can enhance your experience and interactions with locals.
  • Don’t miss out on trying local dishes. Antigua has a vibrant food scene, and sampling traditional Guatemalan cuisine is a must. Be adventurous and try street food from reputable vendors.
  • Dress modestly when entering religious buildings. Guatemala has a rich cultural heritage. Respect local customs and traditions, especially when visiting churches and religious sites.

Where to stay in Antigua

There are tons of options when it comes to accommodation in Antigua. But compared to other parts of Guatemala and Central America, you’re going to notice that it’s quite a bit more expensive.

The best place to stay near all the action will be in the historical city center of Antigua.

We were looking for a social atmosphere, but it seemed many of the nice hostels only had dorm rooms. And well, we are a bit past our dorm days… We found that private rooms in hostels were quite expensive for what you get.

Tropicana Hostel

Budget Dorm Room:  Tropicana Hostel  – The best hostel stay in Antigua. Best parties, best tours, and low prices. Great way to meet other travelers while in Guatemala.

Selina Antigua

Budget Private Room:   Selina Antigua  – This upscale hostel chain in Central America caters to digital nomads and does not disappoint with their private rooms. Stylishly decorated, co-working space with strong WiFi, and has a great location in downtown Antigua.

Hotel Casa del Parque

Mid-Range Hotel:  Hotel Casa del Parque  – Luxury style hotel without the luxury price tag. Heated outdoor pool and sauna, one block from the main square, and spacious rooms.

Porta Hotel Antigua

Luxury Hotel:   Porta Hotel Antigua  – 5-stars, onsite spa, outdoor swimming pool and more, plus rooms come with fireplaces. How cute is that! This well located hotel will be one of the highlights of your trip.

Where to eat in Antigua

Food in Antigua Guatemala

There are plenty of dining options in Antigua, from fine dining to local eats. This is by no means a comprehensive list, but instead a few of our favorite options for every type of cuisine!

Guatemalan Food

  • Rincón Típico :  Servicing up Guatemalan specials for every day of the week, this is a great place to try the Pepián. (But note they only serve it Thursdays – Sundays)
  • Los Tres Tiempos :  Guatemalan dishes served with a rooftop view.
  • Saberico :  Serving up Guatemalan comfort food in a beautiful little courtyard garden.
  • La Cuevita de los Urquizú :  This spot is as close as you’ll get to street food from a restaurant with a buffet of traditional dishes and sauces to choose from.

International Cuisine

  • Pappy’s BBQ :  Authentic slow cooked Texas BBQ in Guatemala… enough said!
  • Taqueria Doña Lupita :  Best tacos we had south of Mexico! For a cheap and delicious meal, head to Doña Lupita for tasty food and great service. After your meal is prepared, you can top it off with a variety of fresh salsas from their buffet. They have meat and veggie options.
  • Toko Baru :  For a huge meal at a super cheap price, Toko Baru is where you need to go! They serve Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine. Order the falafel plate and be sure to try all the sauces that are served with it. We were tempted to eat them with a spoon!
  • Ni-Fu Ni-Fa :  For a nice dinner out, head to this Argentinian steak house and eat under the stars in their beautifully lit courtyard.
  • Por Que No? Cafe :  A fun and quirky spot with delicious bar food.
  • Kombu Ramen Shop :  This spot will have you feeling like you’re eating ramen in Japan instead of a small city in Guatemala.

Healthy Eating

  • Samsara :  With delicious vegan eats, even carnivores can appreciate this menu. They also have a location near Lake Atitlan.
  • Restaurant at Caoba Farms :  While this isn’t super cheap, it is fairly priced when you consider the quality of the farm-to-table ingredients that are grown on site. A visit to this beautiful farm is well worth a visit.
  • La Bruja :  A cute little vegetarian restaurant with courtyard seating.
  • Amanecer Juice Bar & Coffee :  This hole-in-wall spot is easy to be missed, with only 2 tables in a tiny location, but they have amazing juices, smoothies and healthy vegetarian food.
  • Wachuma :  This vegan restaurant has a menu packed with healthy alternatives such as veggie burgers, Buddah bowls and vegan tacos.

Transportation in Antigua, Guatemala

Antigua is a very walkable city, especially if you are staying downtown within the historical city center. Uber is available here and is safe, easy and cheap to get around and back and forth from the Guatemala City airport.

The local public transportation is by “chicken bus”, the brightly colored American school buses that get their name because locals bring everything on board—from machinery parts to giant bags of produce to, you guessed it—chickens!

While these busses are everywhere, we don’t recommend this if you are trying to get somewhere fast, they are notorious for stopping constantly and not offering very direct routes.

GuateGo  is a reliable and easy to navigate site that we’d recommend using to book your transportation throughout the country. You can find busses, shuttles, private transport and even flights on the site that’ll take you all around Mexico and Central America.

What to pack for Antigua, Guatemala

Antigua Guatemala

Keeping in mind that Antigua sits at a higher elevation than the costs, the climate here is much cooler than some people expect. Always check the weather before you pack to see what temperatures you can expect for days and nighttime.

Here are some specific items we’d recommend packing for Antigua, Guatemala:

  • Layers, layers, layers!
  • Light jacket for the cooler evenings
  • Rain jacket
  • Insulated water bottle
  • Bug repellant (solids are the way to go)
  • Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
  • Comfortable footwear

Digital Nomads in Antigua

A popular short-term base for  digital nomads , here are some of our best tips for living in Antigua.

Plugs:  Typical plugs in Antigua are the combination Euro-North American style plugs with 120W voltage.

SIM Cards:  Claro and Tigo are the two major cell carriers in Antigua. Most corner shops sell “chips” (aka SIM cards) for both carriers and you’ll see signs for them everywhere. There are also stores for both located in Antigua and both offer no-contract monthly data plans at a reasonable cost.

Psst! Wondering how to stay connected awhile traveling? Use our ultimate guide to getting an international SIM card , including helpful tips for using your phone abroad.

Comments (11) on “ 27 Best Things to Do in Antigua, Guatemala ”

Thank you for posting; this is essential data.

Thank you for all this information on Antigua. I have read lots about hiking Volcan Acatanengo and reading in detail about it on here, plus all the info on Antigua has made me so excited and let me know what to expect and plan for! Muchas gracias!

Thank you for all this great information! My family and I are headed to Guatemala over Thanksgiving, and we were hoping to take a cooking class in Antigua. I saw the recommended pepian class, but I am looking for some other options to compare with. I’m having a hard time finding options that are currently offering classes. Seems Covid may have disrupted some operations. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Thank you for sharing about our beloved country! Greetings from Antigua, Guatemala 🙂

Hi, I enjoy your recommendations and wish I saw them before my Thanksgiving trip to Antigua! A definite thing I wish we did: stay longer and hike a volcano! And cooking classes?! Who knew?

I’m looking for an upscale artisan shop on a main drag that begins with a W. It’s pretty new (maybe one year old), is a clean, modern space and showcases local artisans and their accessories. I think German owned. One (small) clothes rack, space for yoga and small meetings, and gorgeous bracelets are things to check out.

I’ll say we “misplaced” a sliver-plated tri-bracelet that we got there (I think my then boyfriend sadly regifted it) and I’d like to replace it. But I can’t find the store online now. 🙁

So, perhaps… come up with a list of fabulous smaller boutique shops that aren’t always showcased (like in the usual top lists of Trip Advisor and Fodor. Wink.) There are some interesting and hidden gems in wonderful Antigua… so many shops vying for our visits and perusals… too many beautiful sites not to miss.

Keep on traveling and telling!

Daniela (another wandering sole)

Hi guys! We just read this, thank you so much for adding our coffee tour and Pepián workshop. We hope you continue to share all your experiences with other travelers out there.

Quite the price jump from Q100 to USD 38 for the pepian workshop..

What a great place to visit! I would love to see the volcano – I find them so fascinating!!

Yes, the volcano looming in the distance is stunning! Plus, the city itself is such a wonderful place to visit 🙂

Hey Vicki! The volcano was amazing! Highly recommend it. Tons to do in Antigua!

It's important to note that due to the challenging terrain, driving experience is recommended, as the journey can be demanding for those who haven't driven before .Once we arrive we are able to have an aerial view of the entire lake seeing the volcanoes, different towns, all the boats traveling in the lake and if we get lucky some paragliders lifting off or touching down from their flights.  After spending some time here we head back down the mountain and visit the town of Santa Catarina Palopo o ur main stop is the Cafe Tuk, a small local coffee shop known for its organic coffee. Here, the coffee making process is a hands-on experience, with beans manually smashed to create a fresh and authentic brew. For those who like to venture out you can take some time to walk around the edge of the lake and meet some locals.  After visiting Santa Catarina, we head to our last stop which is a restaurant  in Panajachel that allows us to watch the sunset over the lake.  Here we have an opportunity to grab dinner or some snacks and drinks while watching the sunset from the lake shore y ou have the flexibility to wrap up the tour at this scenic spot, offering you the option to linger and enjoy the atmosphere a bit longer. Alternatively, if you're ready to conclude the evening, a quick 5-minute ride back will take you to our office in Panajachel, providing a convenient endpoint for your tour.

The Pacaya Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in Guatemala, with a height of approximately 2,500 meters above sea level. The environment is made up of wet forests and rocks. It has stunning views of the Calderas Lagoon which we visit from the seat of our ATVs and three other volcanoes: Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango. On our unique Adventure we will take ATVs from San Vicente Pacaya to various areas near and around the Pacaya Volcano. We will go on various trails to some of the villages located at the base of the volcano, where we are able to hike up the side of the volcano on top of the petrified lava flow as high as you are able to go. Throughout the tour we will be able to admire different views of the volcanoes and drive through some of the villages located near the base of the volcano.  We will drive through different off road trails, and we will even take some time to drive on the volcanic sand and lava fields inside of a private plantation.

The trails, stops, and views can vary depending on the season and how active the volcano is during that time.

We DO NOT go to the San Vicente Pacaya National park.

The Tour Includes: Ground transportation, bilingual guide, ATV, entrance and parking fees, 1 bottle of wáter, 1 bottle of Gatorade, chocolate, chips, cookies and a sandwich.

14 Ideas For What to Do in Antigua, Guatemala

A ntigua is one of the most captivating destinations in Guatemala. It has a unique blend of colonial charm and natural wonders, making it a dazzling sight to witness no matter when you visit.

From walking the city’s cobblestone streets to marveling at ancient churches and bustling markets to hiking active volcanoes and diving into the city’s gastronomic delights – there is no shortage of things to do in Antigua, Guatemala.

But if you’re not sure what to do in Antigua, Guatemala, then you’ve come to the right place. We’ve listed some of our favorite attractions and activities so you can plan the perfect trip.

Is Antigua Worth Visiting?

1. admire the ruins of antigua, 2. try guatemalan coffee, 3. try the street food, 4. hit the markets, 5. check out day of the dead kite festival, 6. attend semana santa – easter/holy week, 7. go on a volcano hike, 8. take a day trip to lake atilan, 9. take a trip to tikal, 10. take a photo of santa catalina arch, 11. admire views from cerro de la cruz, 12. relax on one of the rooftop terraces, 13. learn about craft beer at antigua brewing company, 14. take a chocolate making workshop, best time of year to visit antigua, getting to and around antigua, where to stay in antigua, final thoughts, more guatemala travel tips.

Antigua is the last true Colonial City remaining in Latin America . It’s small enough to walk around and yet brimming with attractions and things to do.

You can have the cheapest Spanish lessons in the world here, and the locals are so friendly and welcoming. The Mayan culture still breathes deep for the local people, which intermingle with the foreigners.

The cobblestone streets, colorful houses and huge Central Park offer the perfect backdrop for photos, as well as a quiet spot to watch the local life go by.

Not only is the city beautiful, but Antigua is surrounded by three gorgeous volcanoes (one of which is VERY active and gives off smoke daily – but more on that later).

If you’re wondering if Antigua is worth visit, the answer is a resounding yes. Not only do you get history, beauty, and surrounded by nature’s ferocious tenacity, but you simply get SO much more for your money with hotels, restaurants, souvenirs and other stuff because Guatemala is a cheap country to visit.

What to Do in Antigua

Antigua experienced two severe earthquakes; in 1843 and 1974. These quakes caused a lot of damage and destruction, and you can visit hundreds of ruins all around the city that are preserved to bring you back to those moments.

The most notable ruins are the churches. These were built during the colonial era and were not built to last the magnitude of earthquakes.

One of the most famous is of the La Ermita de la Santa Cruz, which was built in the colonial era and has stunning Baroque architecture.

One of my favorite ruins is that of Convento Capuchinas, which is a former monastery that features both European and Mesoamerican architecture.

This former santuary home features the ruins of a church, cloister, and the nuns living quarters, as well as a striking central courtyard with a fountain.

Along with the ruins of churches and cathedrals that once were, there are still 35 active churches in Antigua as well. The most popular one stands along Antigua’s famous Parque Central (Central Park), known as Catedral San José, which retains much of its 16th century beauty.

Check out this walking tour of Antigua which takes you to see the most iconic ruins and landmarks.

Coffee is one of Guatemala’s most priced commodities and some of the best coffee plantations are just a few minutes outside of Antigua.

If you want to try the freshest beans, then you will find it here in Antigua.

I highly recommend you take a Guatemalan coffee tour to find the best cafes and coffee shops.

Combo Tour: Colonial Antigua & Guatemala City Explorer Tour: Enjoy 2 wonderful cities, ancient colonial city of Antigua, a UNRSCO World Heritage Site, and Modern Guatemala City at the same day. Learn more here !

Antigua is probably one of the best places in Central America for restaurants. You can find everything from typical Guatemalan restaurants to internationally known chefs cooking up gastronomical masterpieces.

However, it’s the street food that will give you the best flavors and is so cheap. There are street vendors all around Antigua, mainly by the parks and churches.

From the savory Chuchitos, which are flavorful tamales wrapped in a corn husk, to the aromatic and rich chicken pepián, the street food scene offers a diverse culinary experience.

Look out for tantalizing options like Atol, Rellenitos, and Tostadas with guacamole, beans, or tomato sauce, each providing a unique taste of the region’s gastronomic heritage.

Want to learn about street food from a local? Check out this street food tour at night!

If you want to do some shopping and bring home souvenirs, there are three places you can shop; Arc Street where all the best Jade is sold, Central Market (Central Mercado), which is close to the bus terminal (this is more of a local market with a handicraft market attached to it), and Capuchinas Ruins Market .

Antigua is world known for the best jade. This was a sacred stone to the Maya and is sold in stores all over the city.

One word of advice, for good quality Jade get it in the stores, not at the markets.

For souvenirs, I recommend Capuchinas Ruins market . This is a year round market of great handicrafts. Market days are every day, but during the week it’s only indoors and on weekends they have more vendors sit outside.

The Day of the Dead Kite Festival is a vibrant and poignant celebration honoring departed loved ones. This ancient tradition, held annually on November 1st, brings together families to fly exquisitely crafted kites adorned with intricate designs and vibrant colors.

The kites are on average between 10 – 30 feet in diameter – they are huge!

As the kites soar into the sky, it is believed that they carry messages to the spirits of their loved ones.

The festival blends solemn remembrance with artistic expression, serving as a beautiful symbol of the enduring connection between the living and the departed.

Semana Santa is a vibrant celebration that commemorates the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

This annual event, held from Sunday, March 24 to Saturday, March 30 in 2024, is a deeply cherished tradition in Guatemala, and is filled with elaborate processions, colorful street carpets made of flowers and sawdust, and religious reenactments.

It holds immense significance for the local community and attracts over a million visitors each year.

The festivities blend both indigenous Mayan traditions with Catholic rituals, creating a unique cultural tapestry.

No where in the world will you see alfombras (carpets) and processions as you would in Antigua. The two main days are the Thursday and Friday before Easter Sunday.

Antigua is surrounded by volcanoes. Not just dormant ones, but active ones too. The most famous is Fuego, the notoriously active volcano responsible for causing much devastation, including in November 2018 when the eruption took the lives of 4,000 people.

If you want to see Fuego spit it’s firey flames into the air, then you’re better off hiking Acatenango Volcano, which offers an amazing view of Fuego but at a safe distance.

The hike is pretty challenging, not going to lie to you, and you’ll need to prepare for the altitude of 3,976 meters above sea level. The altitude is tough but the trail is tougher, since you’re hiking up volcanic ash and sand. Hiking boots and poles will help you a lot here.

If you want to see a volcano without a difficult hike, Pacaya is a good alternative. The hike can be done in half a day and takes you up the side of this active volcano, where you can gaze upon lava flows and toast marshmellows over hot spots. You can also do ATV tours of Pacaya too if you don’t want to hike.

Check out this half day hiking tour of Pacaya Volcano from Antigua!

Check out this 2 Day / 1 Night hiking tour of Acatenango from Antigua!

One of the most breathtaking natural wonders in Guatemala is Lake Atitlán, which is nestled amidst towering volcanoes and surrounded by charming Mayan villages.

This is a volcanic lake, which was formed 84,000 years ago after a volcanic eruption, and sits at 1,500 meters above sea level.

It’s a huge lake spanning 18 kilometers, and is also the deepest lake in Central America .

You can go kayaking in the shimmering waters or relax at one of the lake-side restaurants, go for a swim (though we wouldn’t recommend it – it’s said that waste and sewage run off into the lake . Though it’s pretty to look at!) or you can explore the vibrant markets brimming with local crafts.

It’s the perfect day trip to take if you want a serene escape from the bustling Antigua.

Check out this day tour of Lake Atilan from Antigua!

Possibly the most famous Mayan ruins (aside from Machu Picchu) is Tikal. Tikal isn’t close to Antigua, however it’s one of the most unmissable attractions in Guatamala, so you can many tours that include flights to this iconic archaeological site easily in Antigua.

The beauty of visiting Tikal from Antigua is that the flight allows you to gaze upon the ruins from above, offering a bird’s eye view from the plane.

Nestled in the depths of the Guatemalan jungle, this UNESCO World Heritage Site spans for miles, with the occasional temple ruin perched beneath the trees.

Tikal is still an ongoing archaeological site, so with each visit there is something new to explore. It’s estimated that it dates back to the 1st century A.D., and was once a thriving citadel and city with temples and palaces, but was later abandoned and left to ruin.

Some of the most notable sites in the park include the Lost World Pyramid (Mundo Perdido) and the Temple IV, which is a staggering 70 meters tall. This makes it the tallest pre-Columbian structure in the whole of the Americas.

Check out this tour of Tikal from Antigua which includes the flight.

One of the most iconic scenes in Antigua is of the Santa Catalina Arch, which could be considered an artistic ode to the city’s vivid narrative.

This architectural masterpiece, adorned with vibrant yellow tones and intricate details, allows you to capture the iconic cobbled streets and colonial heritage, set against the backdrop of majestic volcanoes.

No tourists visiting Antigua can leave without capturing a photograph of the Santa Catalina Arch, which is the backdrop that says “I’ve been to Antigua!”.

Overlooking the colonial splendor of Antigua, is the Cerro de la Cruz. This enchanting vantage point is the perfect place to go for sunset or to get a unique perspective of the city.

The ascent to this hill of the cross unveils a mesmerizing panorama, offering sweeping views of the city’s iconic architecture, nestled amidst the breathtaking backdrop of Volcán Agua.

One of the best places to relax in Antigua is from a seat at one of the city’s rooftop bars. This is the best place to see the incredible volcano vistas and colonial rooftops that make Antigua so unique.

My favorite rooftop bar is Café Sky, which has a lovely rooftop terrace with incredible views. The menu serves up traditional Guatemalan dishes and a few international favorites, but it’s the view you come for.

It’s the perfect place to relax after a day of adventure and sightseeing.

The Antigua Brewing Company is a craft brewery, housed within a captivating colonial house, which offers a delightful fusion of handcrafted artisanal beers and delectable cuisine in a vibrant atmosphere.

Indulge in the rich flavors of their meticulously brewed beers, whilst admiring the historical charm of the setting.

The Antigua Brewing Company is one of the most bustling places to be in Antigua, and should be high on your list of things to do in Antigua at night.

As well as coffee beans, Guatemala also has rich soil perfect for growing cacao beans, used for making chocolate.

You can visit The Chocolate Museum in Antigua where you can make your own chocolate with a chocolate making workshop.

This is not only a memorable activity, but a great way to bring home a unique souvenir from your trip.

The best time to visit Antigua is during the dry season, which is when you have the best weather of the year. This runs from November through April, and June until August.

If you want to come for Semana Santa, then Easter week is the best time.

The low season is May (the weather is still great) and also September and October (but it can get rainy during those months).

My advice, if you’re not coming for the major festivals, coming off season is the perfect time to be here . It hardly rains, certainly not enough to put a dampen on your trip. Plus, you have Antigua for yourself!

To get to Antigua, Guatemala you need to fly to Aurora International Airport (Guatemala City Airport) in Guatemala City which is about 45 minutes from Antigua itself.

To travel within Guatemala you will need to do either private or collective shuttles to other destinations such as Lake Atitlan, Chichicastenango, Tikal and other areas of interest.

Antigua is small enough to be able to walk everywhere you have to. However, if you want to get somewhere fast or are tired there are hundreds of Tuk Tuk’s and taxis.

The public buses take too long and are more for getting to the surrounding areas rather than Antigua center.

When you want to explore more of Antigua, such as Lake Atitlán, you’ll need to look out for one of these…

Antigua has some of the most gorgeous colonial hotels in this part of the world. You can stay in a luxury hotel for less than other countries.

Although, there is no shortage of the hundreds of hostels with dorms and private rooms for backpackers, too.

One hotel stands out above all else; Casa Santo Domingo . Staying here is more of an experience rather than just a place to sleep. It doubles up as a museum and is one of the most historic hotels in the city.

Chances are if you don’t stay here you will definitely visit it at one time or another during your visit to Antigua.

Antigua is so special and unique on every level. It’s small enough, yet big enough to have everything you need.

The people are humble and kind and they love kids. The food selection is amazing. Best of all, there is always something to do.

We hope that this guide gave you some inspiration for what to do in Antigua and helped you plan your trip!
