The 6 Best Gym Memberships for Travelers

Sep 10 The 6 Best Gym Memberships for Travelers

When the hotel gym doesn’t cut it, these gym memberships will..

Finding a place to train the way you like can be tricky when you're away from home.

For frequent travelers, having the right gym membership, like Planet Fitness , could make all the difference.

Think about it. If you have a membership with a popular commercial gym that you love to use, you could potentially have access to a gym that you know you like, wherever you happen to be.

These are the 6 best gym memberships for travelers:

24 Hour Fitness

Anytime fitness, planet fitness.

Let’s take a closer look at what each one of these commercial gym chains offers its members and how it can be a good option for traveling.

Photo: LA Fitness

LA Fitness has over 700 gyms in the U.S. and Canada. For around $40 a month, members can get access to any LA Fitness in the United States.

In some cases, you may have to pay an additional fee, especially if you are visiting an LA Fitness in a different state than your own.

The great thing about LA Fitness is that they are essentially everywhere. When you land in a new city, you can be reasonably confident that there's an LA fitness nearby.

We should note that three major cities in the U.S. that do not have an LA Fitness are San Francisco, Denver, and Las Vegas.

Photo: Crossfit

CrossFit is a training regimen that consists of constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity.

All CrossFit workouts are based on functional movements, and these movements reflect the best aspects of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing, and more.

CrossFit has been one of the fastest-growing fitness trends of the past decade and gyms, aka boxes, can be found worldwide. There are around 15,000 CrossFit-affiliated gyms around the world, making it incredibly travel-friendly.

Most CrossFit boxes allow visitors to "drop in" - you'll pay a fee to work out (usually between $10 and $20) and maybe walk away with a free t-shirt from that gym. Many boxes will waive the drop-in fee if you buy a t-shirt.

Locating the nearest CrossFit gym to where you are is made even easier with this CrossFit Affiliate Map .

Busy travelers tend to need access to gyms at odd times and 24 Hour Fitness might be the perfect gym membership for someone in finds themselves looking for an open gym after landing in Miami at two in the morning.

24 Hour Fitness has over 400 clubs in 18 states in the U.S. - making it one of the largest gym chains in the United States.

Membership dues are reasonably priced and range between $30 and $60 a month. Choose “all-club” access to go to any 24 Hour Fitness in the US.

Additionally, 24 Hour Fitness has teamed up with GoodLife Fitness and Energie Cardio to give their members access to over 300 gyms while traveling in Canada.

Equinox Fitness has some of the biggest and most luxurious gyms in the world and is considered by many to be the best athletic club to join.

There are Equinox clubs in many major U.S. cities, as well as Toronto and Vancouver. Membership prices vary from location to location, but here's a look at what it might cost you (it's expensive).

For around $250 a month, you can have access to all Equinox clubs in the United States, including all classes and amenities.

For a $300 destination membership (plus a $500 initiation fee), you'll get access to nearly all Equinox Fitness and Sports Club locations worldwide.

Anytime Fitness gyms are open 24 hours a day and there are more than 4,700 locations around the world, including all 50 U.S. states.

Countries with Anytime Fitness gyms include Canada, Mexico, Australia, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

Anytime Fitness has been called the "most convenient gym on the planet" and this makes it the best choice for anyone who travels a lot.

With a membership that costs around $40 a month, you will have access to the thousands of Anytime Fitness gyms worldwide after 30 days of membership.

Run a search for the “best gyms near me” or “cheapest gyms near me” and there’s a good chance a Planet Fitness is going to be nearby.

Planet Fitness is one of the fastest-growing gym chains, arguably the biggest gym in the US, and is a friendly environment for fitness beginners.

There are over 2,000 locations worldwide, including every state in the US, and each one is well-equipped with cardio machines, weight machines, free weights, locker rooms with showers, and personal training.

The PF Black Card costs only $25 a month and allows you access to any Planet Fitness (2000+ gyms) without an additional charge. Note: you can only visit a non-home gym 10 times a month.

The Black Card also has some travel perks, including special deals on hotels, resorts, cruises, flights, and car rentals.

Finding a Gym While Traveling

You can't go wrong with Google for finding good gyms in the area you’ll be staying. A simple search will show you nearby gyms and give you all the info you’ll need.

When it comes to getting access to gyms, consider ClassPass , which has a monthly membership that allows users to access more than 8,000 fitness studios across the country.

You can take as many classes per month as you like and visit the same studio up to three times each month.

ClassPass is available in 50 cities across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia, with plans to expand.

Then there’s TrainAway - an online marketplace for gym day passes.

Search your location on the map in the TrainAway app and choose from one of their 1,200 partner gyms. Select your pass type, complete your purchase, and show the prepaid pass on your phone to the gym staff.

When are these gyms crowded? The busiest, or peak, times for any commercial gym are in the early morning and in the late evening. The best time to go is usually in the early afternoon.

Stay connected while traveling with eSIM compatible phones that allow you to activate plans right from your phone.

Bottom Line

Finding a place to get a good workout doesn't have to be a chore when you're traveling.

I f you don't like hotel gyms or you're picky about where you work out, having the right gym membership can go a long way in helping you always have a reliable place to keep up your fitness routine while on the road.

The gym is just one part of keeping fit and healthy while you're traveling, though.

If you want to make sure you're always on top of your game, make sure you're taking the right supplements for yourself. BodyNutrition.org has some great info about this.

While exploring the world, a VPN becomes an essential tool, serving as both a guardian of your online privacy and a means to unlock content restricted by your geographical location.

VeePN not only ensures your digital security but also grants you access to Amazon Prime Video's sports channels, making it an invaluable companion for your travels.

Travel & Leisure / Kevin Liang

I’ve worked with personal trainers and fitness experts to tailor my fitness routine to meet my specific preferences and fitness goals so whenever I travel, I can keep my routine. I always bring portable fitness equipment to maintain my regiment without worrying about finding a gym or a class. Personal trainer and co-owner of Strong Friends Gym in San Francisco, Julia Seward Gambogi says that “when it comes to workouts, finding something you can do consistently is key and portable workout equipment that you can bring with you is a great way to stay on track and build strength – no matter where you are in the world.”

From virtual workouts to top-quality yoga mats , pilates balls, and resistance bands for strength training, we've rounded up the best portable exercise equipment you can bring with you wherever you go.

Best Yoga Mat

Aeromat elite yoga pilates mat.

We found that this yoga mat has the perfect amount of thickness, which gives a more supportive feel.

This mat has a slightly sticky feel, which enhances grip and prevents sliding, even when sweaty, but not all users will like that stickiness.

We found that the Aeromat Elite Pilates/Yoga Mat is one of the most high-quality mats for the sweatiest and most intense workouts. Made with closed-cell foam, this mat is extra durable and resilient for any type of vigorous exercise. If you’re looking for a thicker mat with superior cushioning, this is an ideal option to provide more support for your joints. Despite its thickness, it is lightweight and easy to roll up, making it convenient for travel and storage without taking up too much space.

Travel + Leisure / Cindy Erskin

Best Resistance Bands

Gaiam restore resistance training workout pull up bands 3 pack.

These durable Gaiam resistance bands come in a three-pack and are lightweight, making them easy to travel with.

These resistance bands are a lot thicker than other loop bands.

There are two common styles of resistance bands and I prefer using these longer loop bands by Gaiam versus wider and thinner resistance bands. “Longer loop resistance bands are best for upper body exercises, such as banded rows, lat pulldowns, and straight-arm pulldowns," Seward Gambogi says. "You can also use them for more isolated arm exercises like bicep curls and tricep kickbacks. These exercises don't require much space, so you can do them in a hotel room or at an airport without making much noise.” These long-loop resistance bands benefit stretching and upper-body workouts because they provide a broader range of motion — making it easier to do deeper stretches and full-arm movements. I regularly use all three bands with varied resistance levels because they have greatly helped strengthen and tone my shoulders and arms.

Best for Ab Workouts

Moveactive 20-22cm pilates ball.

Because of its compact size, you’re able to do your favorite pilates and barre ab exercises anywhere.

When using pilates balls for ab and core workouts, prior pilates or barre class experience could be helpful in understanding the proper placement and technique.

This MoveActive pilates ball comes with me on every trip; it inflates and deflates in seconds and flattens very thinly, making it convenient to pack in any bag. I am an avid pilates and barre fan and have been doing mat pilates and barre exercises  at home for years. I treat myself to a reformer classes every now and then, but I really enjoy doing pilates classes at home and when I travel so I can target certain areas, such as my abs.

One of the most versatile and effective equipment I use is the MoveActive pilates ball especially for core and ab workouts and it has never lost it’s shape or density. Adding the pilates ball to my workouts add an extra challenge to ab exercises, engaging more muscle fibers for a more intense workout. “Using a pilates ball is really great to hold between your legs, so you engage your inner thigh and hip muscles, which can help with a much deeper core engagement,” Seward Gambogi adds.

Best Jump Rope

Wigore jump rope.

Its digital handles connect to an app, helping you stay motivated by counting jumps and tracking calories burned, making it convenient to stay on top of your fitness goals.

While the digital features are a convenient bonus, they might not be ideal if you prefer to avoid extra tech or charging another device.

Personally, I am not a fan of running or cardio machines, so jump roping is one of my favorite ways to get my cardio in and quickly break a sweat. This jump rope by Wigore is convenient to bring in any suitcase or duffel bag . With updated tech features, it is simple to set up, high quality, and durable, helping you keep track of your jumps and calories burned. The main handle has a built-in motor that vibrates to alert you on things such as reaching your goal number or when time is up.

Best for Virtual Workouts

Meta quest 3.

We found that the immersive workouts on Meta Quest 3 fitness apps provide a more effective and engaging workout than some in-studio classes.

Some workouts require more space for movements like kicks, punches, and arm swings, so make sure you have enough room if you're in a hotel.

For a fully immersive and virtual experience, Meta Quest 3 has a variety of exercises, workout classes, and even meditation settings, bringing the gym to the comfort of your own space — whether it’s a hotel room or home rental. The Meta Quest 3 fitness apps include five interactive studios with hundreds of on-demand classes, adding new ones each week including boxing, dancing, sculp, combat, and HIIT classes. Options such as their Xponential+ gives you the ability to exercise in stunning VR locations around the world, and the apps connected to studio classes bring favorites like PureBarre and Rumble to you in any city or country you’re in.

Best for Strength Training

Bala bangles 2-piece wrist and ankle weight set.

We found that these weights are also great for virtual workouts, as you can easily add them to your wrists or ankles to intensify your exercises.

Any weight set is going to add weight to your luggage, so be sure to pack these if your destination doesn’t have a gym.

These Bala Bangles are the perfect addition to bring with you on your upcoming trip and/or for your regular routine. These stylish weights make it simple to add weight for strength training or to enhance your fitness goals and can be worn on your wrists or ankles — providing flexibility no matter where you are. We found that these are simple to put on, taking less than 10 seconds to strap onto your ankles or wrists. You can even wear them to the airport as they are great for walking around the terminal and are discreet enough to wear under a jacket or pants.

Best for Flexibility

Castleflexx mobility and full body strengthening device.

This tool helps you get a deep stretch for your entire body and not just specific areas.

We found that this tool is a bit heavy, so the CastleFlexx might be best for those who frequently exercise and/or are traveling somewhere where they may not have access to a gym or stretching machine.

The CastleFlexx stretching tool is a high-quality, advanced version of traditional stretching aids, designed to relieve tension throughout your entire body. Unlike most tools that focus primarily on the lower body, the CastleFlexx offers deep stretching for both upper and lower body muscles (which is perfect post-flight). Available in various sizes, it accommodates individuals of different heights, ensuring inclusivity. Using this tool can help release tightness and tension in your legs and hips, promoting greater mobility and alleviating lower back discomfort — ideal to use after a long day of traveling.

If you have an upcoming trip planned and want to stay on top of your fitness routine while taking care of yourself with plenty of walking and sightseeing, here are a few items you may be interested in.

Hydro Flask 24 Ounce Wide Mouth Water Bottle : Keep your water and drinks refreshingly cold with Hydro Flask’s insulated stainless steel water bottle. Designed to be compact and portable, it’s perfect for travel and I love how the slim design fits easily into my personal item bag when I’m traveling — making it a convenient companion for any excursion.

Hyperice Hypersphere Go - Vibrating Massage Ball : The Hyperice Hypersphere Mini is a fantastic and effective travel companion for keeping up with your fitness routine. Its compact size makes it easy to pack, and their powerful vibrations help relieve muscle tension and soreness after long flights or active days exploring. This is a must when I travel, especially for my legs and lower back area. You can use it for quick, effective muscle recovery sessions, ensuring you stay on track with your fitness goals while enjoying your travels.

Tips for Buying Portable Fitness Gear

Only pack what you plan to use.

When preparing for a trip, it's essential to pack exercise items that are compact and ones you actually use in your regular workouts. Avoid buying portable workout equipment if you rarely use them at home, as you're unlikely to use them on your trip. Keep it simple by bringing gear that seamlessly fits into your routine, ensuring you stay motivated and consistent.

Look for multi-purpose items

Only pack what you plan to use, focusing on the essentials to avoid unnecessary weight. Consider multi-purpose items such as jump ropes or resistance bands, which are convenient to bring on your trip and allow for a variety of exercises. This way, you’ll be able to maintain your fitness regimen without being burdened by heavy, unused equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Seward Gambogi recommends doing planks and squats as one of the best home exercises to work the entire body with or without at-home equipment. “Planking works the whole core and the shoulders," she says. "And for more intensity, you can add a pilates ball between the knees and squeeze to increase deeper core engagement. Try to hold between 30-60 seconds for 3-4 rounds.” When it comes to squats, they’re a great at-home workout that can work the whole body because they work and activate the glutes, thighs, and hips. “If you add loops and booty bands around your knees while doing squats, it can increase glute activation and build knee strength. Try sets of 10 to 15 reps for 3-4 sets," Seward Gambogi adds.

Seward Gambogi recommends the jump rope as one of the most versatile pieces of exercise equipment because ”the jump rope is an affordable and space-efficient way to add a light cardio component to your workout. It complements strength training with resistance bands and benefits coordination, joint and ligament strength, heart health, and overall cardio fitness."

Seward Gambogi suggests focusing on short, space-efficient workouts using portable equipment to stay fit while traveling. She emphasizes the importance of walking to explore the destination and staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water. “It’s important to get your steps in while exploring the beautiful places you visit," she says. "When it comes to food and nutrition, enjoy the local cuisine, but always stay hydrated and include vegetables in your meals. Most importantly, don’t worry about taking some time off of your routine — it won't mean a lot in the long run. What matters most is that you enjoy yourself."

I've been using the Sweat Sweet waist trimmer for years and I continue to be impressed every time I use it. Made of extra-thick neoprene, this waist band causes you to sweat even harder without doing any extra work. Simply adjust it around your waist using the Velcro strap before doing any cardio and when your workout is complete, you'll be dripping with sweat. It's affordable and can be folded down to take up very little packing space. Even a simple walk with this on around my waist leaves me sweating as if I just went on a long run.

The 12 Best Travel Workout Equipment Pieces You Need to Stay Fit Anywhere

Getting a workout on the road with just your body weight is possible and very easy, but having the best travel workout equipment steps things up – allowing you to train for strength, muscle, and performance anywhere, in a way that you can’t with just bodyweight exercises.

However, sifting through the thousands of trendy (and sometimes worthless) pieces of fitness gear can make it hard to find equipment genuinely good for working out during travel.  ABA will fix that.  In this list, discover the best travel fitness equipment to stay fit, strong, fast, and ready for adventure.

  • The 11 Best Travel Workout Equipment Options
  • Why fitness is important while traveling
  • The fitness that I recommend keeping top of mind

  • Sandbells (Sandbag kettlebells)

  • Portable and Refillabel Sandbags with Handles
  • Jump Ropes and Speed Ropes
  • Full-Length Resistance Bands

The 9 Best Travel Workout Equipment Options

1. portable suspension trainers: the mb2 adventure kit.

The Pocket Monkii is an ultra-portable suspension training strap system that literally fits in your pocket and allows you to do a slew of resistance training exercises anywhere.  These essential suspension training exercises make up the bulk of my fitness routine on the road to maintain strength and stay ready for whatever fun comes next.

2. Mini Resistance Bands with Handles

Getting in a good lower body workout with resistance can be difficult without weights and while traveling.  Fortunately, adding handles to heavy duty mini resistance bands makes for a portable deadlifting and squatting option, to maintain leg and lower back strength while traveling

Read this article to learn more about doing deadlifts and squats using resistance bands

3. DIY Gymnastics Rings with Versatile Anchor

A variation on the suspension trainer, these DIY gymnastics rings anchor nearly anywhere and can be used to as both a suspension trainer or gymnastics rings – allowing for pull ups, dips, presses, muscle ups, and more.  It can be anchored from trees, poles, pull up bars, doors, and more, making for another nearly perfect travel workout option.

The DIY gymnastics rings/suspension trainer (which I call the Optimus) only costs about $30 to make, and takes about 15 minutes.  Click here for the full DIY suspension trainer tutorial

4. GORUCK Rucker: Weighted Backpack for Weighted Workouts

Using a backpack for your travels that doubles as a gym is an excellent way to get in a workout on the road by either using it as weight for calisthenics, suspension trainer exercises , or Rucking .

The GORUCK Rucker is an uber-tough backpack built to carry 400lbs+, so it will survive heavy abuse.  Heavy duty handles on the top, bottom, and sides, allow you to use the bag in the same way as free weights for improvised workouts and rucking workouts .  If you don’t want the complexity of a workout, just put some weight in your backpack and walk (aka rucking) for a great legs and core workout.

Additionally, consider the GORUCK GR1 – a still tough pack that doubles as a workout in a backpack and a great daily carry thanks to the super padded, “bomb proof laptop pocket.”

You can read more in our full GORUCK GR1 review

For weight, I recommend purchasing two collapsible sandbells for your travels.  These can easily be filled with sand (~20lbs each) or water to use as weights for your ruck, collapse easily, and double as useful drybags.

I highly recommend these sandbells that are available on Amazon

5. Sandbells

Kettlebells are one of the best, most functional pieces of workout equipment.  The handle and ability to pull and move the kettlebell in odd directions – with swings, presses, get-ups, and more – makes you workout muscles you didn’t even know you had.

But carrying around a kettlebell isn’t practical at all.  However, a collapsible and portable sandbell is very practical.

A Sandbell is essentially a heavy duty, specially made roll-top dry bag with a padded handle.  The bag can be filled with sand or water at will, then emptied and collapsed when finished.

These sandbells make great weights for rucks, or are excellent for workouts on their own.  If you don’t know where to start with sandbell/kettlebell workouts, I highly recommend the workout Kettlehell which has been my favorite kettlebell workout for over a decade.

Click here to see available sandbell sizes on Amazon

6. Minimalist Running Shoes

If all else fails just get out and run…or even walk.  A great pair of minimalist running shoes pack down small in your luggage but also work the lower leg (ankles and calves) in a way that its difficult to hit with resistance training.  The result, when done right, leads to healthier knees and feet, along with more endurance on your feet.

Minimalist footwear has the added benefit of not taking up much space and doubling as hiking shoes and comfy footwear – and doing so many jobs is great for sticking to a minimalist packing list .

For a little inspiration, read the entertaining book Born to Run

My go to minimalist running shoes are the New Balance Minimus for the city and light trail, and the Merrel Trail Glove for heavy trail.

Be sure to do a hefty amount of research on minimalist and barefoot running, especially on midfoot and forefoot striking, before getting out there and start with short distances.

7. Running Sandals

Similar to minimalist running shoes except more minimalist, a pair of running sandals are an awesome travel fitness addition.  After adapting to minimalist running, these running kicks are great for use in places with hot weather that leave your feet stifled in shoes.  I’ve logged more miles running in sandals during my time in Southeast Asia than I have with shoes.

Which sandals should you get?

I own and love the Xero Z-Trails (you can read all about it in this Xero Z-trail review ) and highly recommend them.

However, if you prefer a “between the toes” sandal, check out the reliable and well review Lunas Sandals .

8. Lacrosse Balls for Self Massage and Mobility Training

“Myofascial release” is the technical name for massaging yourself with a Lacrosse ball in a way that loosens tightened muscles and stiff tissue much more effectively than stretching can.

Once you understand the technique of myofascial release and self-massaging with a lacrosse ball, fixing anything from a stiff back to painful shoulders is a cinch and can be done within 2 to 5 minutes.  That’s a pretty great return for a $3 ball and 5 minutes of time.  I’ve been able to improve my mobility beyond what it was in my 20’s while staying injury-free for a decade-plus thanks to this technique.

VIDEO: HOW TO PUT YOUR MASSAGE THERAPIST OUT OF BUSINESS WITH A LACROSSE BALL

Bottom Line: If you get nothing else from this list, get a Lacrosse ball on Amazon for a few dollars .

Step 1: Buy 3 Lacrosse Balls

Step 2: Google “Myofascial Release with Lacrosse Ball” or look up the Mobility WOD videos on Youtube, and go from there.

The video above does a great job of sharing how to use a lacrosse ball for self massage

9. Sandbags with Handles: A refillable, portable option for resistance in HIIT workouts

If you will be traveling near a beach or anywhere with a hefty supply of sand, a durable sandbag with handles is a surprisingly functional, useful, and versatile piece of equipment. Each time I take my sandbag to the beach it takes about 5 minutes to fill (at the start) and 1 minute to empty (at the end) and I’m able to get in a resistance workout or Crossfit style HIIT workout, using Olympic lift and powerlift style movements.

During travels, the sandbag folds down into a simple, collapsible nylon bag that can be tucked into the bottom of your backpack or luggage.

An option like this GORUCK “Simple Sandbag” is minimalist and perfect for travel

Find a suitable sandbag for your travels in our list of best sandbags for travel .

Also, check out our list of 31 awesome Sandbag high intensity interval training workouts to see what you can achieve with a single sandbag.

10. Jump Ropes

A simple jump rope is one of the simplest and most effective pieces of gym equipment available and delivers cardio workouts that far surpass the efficiency of running.

Jumping rope burns roughly 1300 calories an hour and jumping rope for 10 minutes is the equivalent of running an 8 minute mile but with the impact share between both legs and thus potentially reducing the risk of knee injury in the long term.

WOD Nation Speed Jump Rope - Blazing Fast Jumping Ropes - Endurance Workout for Boxing, MMA, Martial Arts or Just Staying Fit - Adjustable for Men, Women and Children

Unlike running, jumping rope is possible anywhere – on a rooftop, in a hotel room, in a hostel room, or anywhere else you may be.

I purchased this WOD Nation speed rope for ~$10 on Amazon years ago and have carried it for the last 5 years as my own personal cardio workout option. However any of these well-rated speed ropes on Amazon will do.

11. Full Length Resistance Bands

Full length resistance bands, such as these 41″ Monster Bands from Rogue Fitness make excellent portable exercise equipment that you can use anywhere for a full body workout or for a stretching and mobility routine.

These are the 5 best full length resistance bands I was able to find, and I highly recommend each of them

Once you have solid resistance band, don’t just get in your strength and muscle building workouts, give this shoulder mobility routine (5 stretches in 5 minutes) a shot:

The perfect resistance band shoulder mobility routine

12. Portable Parallettes

Pocket parallettes are another perfect portable exercise equipment option as they facilitate countless exercises while tucking into the bottom of your bag.

These Tumbltrak parallettes are compact enough to travel with you anywhere and add intense strength and muscle building movements to your routine, like deficit pushups, deficit handstand pushups, and 90 degree pushups. After you’re done, these pack back up into their case.

Even outside of travel, a good set of parallettes are an excellent pair workout tools to build full body strength and muscle at home. Check out our 25 best parallettes to find a pair for your home gym.

Why Fitness Is Important While Traveling

Many people see traveling and vacations as a way to take a break. I see the same pleasure and adventure however I see no reason to stop doing things that benefit your life – fitness being among them.  Exercise, and maintaining fitness, are major, positive habits that I think everyone should continue especially while traveling, and this portable fitness equipment makes that possible.

Having a fit, healthy body not only makes us feel better but also empowers us to take on more adventurous travel, safely, and enjoyably.

But how does exercise make traveling better?  Here are 8 great reasons to maintain a fitness routine…especially on the road:

  • Higher energy levels
  • Balanced Hormone Levels and Positive Hormone Boosts
  • Self sufficiency
  • Injury resistance
  • Allows you to adventure further and do more
  • Balance, grounding, and stress reduction
  • Allows us to do more…despite our age
  • Working out helps prevents you from getting sick
  • Better health and fitness always creates better quality of life

1. HIGHER ENERGY LEVELS

The rigors of travel can leave you feeling beaten down – from the jetlag of switched time zones, to the wearing feeling of being on the go constantly – but a fit body is better equipped to make it through everything and still function at it’s peak than an unconditioned body.

A combination of benefits from exercise, from the increase metabolism, to the balancing and boosting of positive hormones (that also improve mood), regular exercise naturally boosts energy levels.

A scientific study on jetlag and exercise showed that hamsters that exercised adjusted to a new time zone in a day and a half, while hamsters that didn’t took more than eight days to get back to “normal”.  Until you’re back to that “normal” other studies show a significant reduction in strength, stamina, and alertness during the “jet lag” phase – which, if you’re traveling adventurously, significantly affects

More energy translates to a more lively and enjoyable experience…all through a little exercise

2. BALANCED HORMONE LEVELS AND POSITIVE HORMONE BOOSTS

From higher and balanced testosterone levels to lower cortisone (stress hormones) and mood-boosting endorphins and serotonin, a good workout can set your body back on track, without the aid (or headache) of drugs.

3. SELF SUFFICIENCY IN ADVENTURES

Having the strength, stamina, and general conditioning is extremely valuable during travel as it allows you to venture alone a little bit more safely.  Whether that means making the hike you can’t find anyone to go with you on, surfing a new spot without friends, or even taking on a motorbike experience down unknown roads – the self-sufficiency, and confidence that you have the strength and endurance to get out of sketchy situations is invaluable.

In my own experience, I don’t think I would have been as comfortable trekking to Everest Base Camp solo or paddling into oversized waves as a beginner surfer if I didn’t think I was in shape to get myself out of bad situations that could have easily come up.

If you rely on the safety of the herd, then you’ll never experience those adventures that lie beyond it.  When traveling adventurously, fitness is its own form of insurance that empowers you to wander solo, and more safely.

4. INJURY RESISTANCE

Most usage injuries, or “old folks injuries” as I like to call them, result from the “natural” degradation of the body.  This usually comes as loss in strength or loss in mobility and flexibility.

You know that lower back pain that everyone complains about in their mid 30’s.  For most, it comes from two things – 1) A weakened core (lower back and abs) and 2) tight muscles in the butt and back of the legs.  Those two factors add up to an injury-prone back that gets thrown out by simply picking up a bag of groceries, and could be easily avoided with some light stretching and a solid, balanced, exercise routine**.  When traveling, that kind of neglect puts you at risk of injury on the canyoning excursion or carrying that backpack over months.

More common in Southeast Asia, those motorbike accidents (not the ones that come from being drunk and not wearing a helmet – that’s just Darwinism in action) will be a lot less disastrous if you have the strength and fitness to control the bike as it goes down, or the mobility and speed to ditch it – saving you an entire vacation waiting for that “Thai Tattoo” to heal.

Do yourself a favor and maintain and strengthen your body to give yourself a little edge when the worst actually does hit.  You may not come out completely unscathed, but trust me, you’ll definitely fare a lot better.

5. ALLOWS YOU TO ADVENTURE FURTHER AND DO MORE

The self-sufficiency definitely allows you to venture beyond the pack, but the stamina and endurance that come with a good exercise routine help you adventure longer, further, and more.

When the rest of the pack calls it quits for the night because the walking tour was too much for them, you’ll still have energy in the tank to continue exploring.

Here on Bali, when I first arrived I made it a point to surf every day for two hours to learn my new passion.

Normally, when people start surfing, two hours in the water paddling around struggling for a wave translates to passing out early – not for me and my friends.  Thanks to the surf workout I did well beforehand, two hours of surfing was easily followed by a workout at the gym (to push my strength and endurance further) and spending the afternoon exploring the rest of Bali – riding 45 minutes to see Balinese Hindu temple complexes floating on the ocean, finding beaches with literally no one but me, and finding villages that had never seen a brotha before (seriously) – all while the rest of the beginner surfers were sleeping, too smoked out to move.

So, by investing 45 minutes into a fitness routine, you get extra hours of experience that the rest of the world misses out on while they’re recovering and sleeping.

6. BALANCE, GROUNDING, AND STRESS REDUCTION

Ask anyone who has traveled for over a year what the hardest parts are and you’ll likely hear “missing family and friends”, “finding (X) food while abroad”, and something along the lines of “not having grounding/ a routine”.

When you’re on the road long enough, not having a home or stability does wear on you – but it doesn’t have to.  Building in healthy, empowering routines, like connecting with family and friends on a routine, scheduled day and giving yourself rest days to chill and veg out on Netflix can make your travels more enjoyable in the long run if you’re wandering long term.  Working out regularly is one of those positive, grounding habits.

By setting that routine every day to run, do yoga, and grab your suspension trainer and do a workout , you’re scheduling in a reliable reset that includes a positive boost of hormones along with the reliability and predictability that can ground you during travel.

This  “stability” when you’re on the go will improve the quality of your wandering much more than you expect

7. ALLOWS US TO DO MORE…DESPITE OUR AGE

Physically, what is so different between our bodies at the ages of 20, 30, 40, and so on?

If we boil it down simply, strength, endurance, mobility, and how quickly recover starts to degrade.  The good news – all of these areas improve drastically with exercise, helping you literally fight the aging process.

You won’t gain strength and endurance as easily as you could at a younger age, but with diligence you can maintain that “spryness”, keeping you mobile and moving well despite your age.

8. WORKING OUT HELPS PREVENTS YOU FROM GETTING SICK

Exercise boosts the immune system and spurns recovery in a way that actually helps prevent you from getting sick.  Though the list of ways this happens and the benefits is nearly endless, here are the highlights

  • Physical activity may help flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways. This may reduce your chance of getting a cold, flu, or other illness
  • Working out positively changes your body’s antibodies and white blood cells – which detect and fight illness and disease.
  • The temperature changes in your body, before, during, and after workouts, can prevent and kill bacteria – similar to how a fever functions – helping you avoid getting sick.
  • Workouts reduce the presence of stress hormones and boost the presence of positive hormones, helping stave off illness and increase positive effects in your body.

So, if you want to spend less time on the road sick, then invest in that workout routine.

9. BETTER HEALTH AND FITNESS ALWAYS CREATES BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE

When was the last time you heard someone say “Oh man, my health is too good. I shouldn’t have done that extra workout?” Yeah…my neither.

Better health, mobility, stamina, and functional strength are things that increase how good your life is the more that you gain them, regardless of how much you have.

With a world full of things that are “good in moderation”, aiming to develop things in your life that are good even in excess is invaluable.

Note: Exercise in excess isn’t necessarily good.  Health, mobility, stamina, and functional strength are good no matter how much you have.  Please head the difference.

10. BEING SEXY ALWAYS FEELS GOOD (…AM I RIGHT?!?!?!)

Let’s be honest…everyone likes looking good, and the better you look, the better you feel.  This isn’t via botox, injections, surgery, dying your hair, or any other way people try to look “better”.

That sexiness that comes from being in good health is a positive change from the inside out, that benefits your body as much as it does your confidence and ultimately improves your overall well being – physically and mentally.

The type of fitness that I recommend keeping top of mind

Though fitness magazines may try to convince you that a certain look is what you need to be “fit”, I highly disagree.  For me, and my travels, fitness involves feeling good and being able to safely adventure, comfortably, and independently as my #1 goal.  Looking good comes secondary, and naturally, after this goal.

This kind of “travel-ready fitness” can be divided into 3 categories, each of which is just as important as the others.  When setting your fitness goals and dividing your time accordingly to achieve them, be sure to balance equally between these three areas.

  • Cardiovascular Fitness and Stamina
  • Functional Strength

CARDIOVASCULAR FITNESS AND STAMINA

One of the easiest elements of fitness to train, cardiovascular fitness, which affects how good are stamina and endurance are, is all about “keeping up” with whatever we have going on.  In terms of travels, whether we’re walking quickly around the airport with bags, spending the entire day on our feet during a tour, or making a short trek up a long hill without huffing and puffing, cardio fitness is useful.

Beyond not being out of breath, good heart health is an investment in your future and will lead to higher energy levels now, making your life more enjoyable now and in the future.

To train cardio, aim to do one of the cardio workouts listed in our travel workouts at least 3 times a week (optimally 4 to 5 times).  Some of the workouts are as short as 5 minutes and can be done as a “smoker” after a normal workout.  Beyond workouts, just aim to get your heart rate up for at least 20 minutes with some activity.

Your target heart rate should be 180 minus your age.  For me, my target minimum heart rate for a good cardio workout is 180 – 35 = 145 beats per minute.  Anything that gets my heart pumping like that – surfing , running, rucking , you name it.  It’s all good

FUNCTIONAL STRENGTH

When most people think of “strength”, they think of strongmen and Crossfit workouts , but this doesn’t capture the whole picture.  Functional strength simply means having the strength to easily navigate your daily life.  On the light side, this could be carrying grocery bags or lifting a heavy backpack, or hiking with a heavy backpack.  An even more practical case is having the back strength to walk in old age with good, comfortable posture.  All of these activities require functional strength and maintaining it.

On the more extreme side, it could be having the strength to lift your own body (or a friend’s body) after an accident, controlling a surfboard, or lifting a motorbike that’s fallen while motorbiking Southeast Asia.

Last, functional strength makes you more injury-proof.  Whether this comes in the form of the strength to safely catch yourself after a fall,

Whatever your daily life consists of, a certain level of functional strength will make it easier.

To maintain functional strength, calisthenics, high-intensity calisthenics, or resistance training is key.

For men and women alike, I highly recommend these workouts and resources:

  • The Essential Suspension Training Workouts
  • 101+ Crossfit Travel Workouts
  • 69 Crossfit Hotel WODs: Workouts you can do in a hotel room or anywhere
  • The Perfect Workout (for Strength and Muscle)

Mobility is one of the most essential, yet overlooked, aspects of fitness.  The ability to move freely, without pain, and with strength through the entire movement.

Though many of us take this youthfulness for granted, it degrades more over time if not maintained, and especially quickly if we work out.

Mobility and flexible muscles aren’t just essential for feeling good, they’re essential for healthy movement and reduced risk of injury, when adventuring and in daily life.  From tight hamstrings in glutes that pull on the lower back, leading to many injuries, to the bad posture and shoulder pains that come from crouching over a computer all day – these stiff muscles inhibit movement at best and put us for higher risk of injury at worst.  We can counter this risk with a good stretching and mobility routine.

My go-to stretching routine consists of hitting every muscle group with a single, long, slow stretch for at least a minute, and 2-4 minutes if I’m feeling pain or excessive tightness in that “chain”.

To maintain your mobility, I recommend adopting this **ultimate stretching routine.

Now that we know why fitness is important to adventurous travel and what elements of fitness we need to include, let’s look at some of the best and most convenient workouts to do while traveling – to maintain our fitness goals.

The good news is, there are plenty of easy options, domestically or abroad, for someone looking to lift weights, run on a treadmill or even take part in a boot camp or yoga class. You can maintain your fitness regimen and find a gym, studio class or personal trainer no matter how far away from your local gym you travel.

Here are a few gyms and classes we love — just remember to call a specific location to confirm pricing ahead of time.

Hilton is now offering exercise equipment in some rooms, as well as BOSU balls, sand balls, resistance bands and yoga mats as part of its Five Feet to Fitness program. Select properties in popular destinations such as Orlando, El Paso and Chicago offer these specialized in-room fitness options.

Hyatt offers on-demand, in-room content streaming barre, HIIT and yoga classes at select Hyatt Regency, Hyatt Place and Hyatt House hotels. Spotify playlists and running maps are available at Hyatt Centric.

Consider ClassPass

With a ClassPass subscription , you can access yoga, strength training, barre, martial arts, Pilates, boxing, and indoor cycling classes, as well as use health clubs, via its flat-rate monthly subscription service. It's a great option to consider if you travel a lot, given it's currently available in over 2,500 cities around the world, including cities in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Asia, Australia and the Middle East.

ClassPass can also be a good way to identify high-quality studios and unexpected activities near you. Doesn't an 80's themed trampoline aerobics class in NYC sound exhilarating?

Hire a Private Instructor

If you have the money to spend, hiring a private instructor or coach is an excellent option. With a dedicated professional helping you achieve your fitness goals, you're guaranteed to receive the most customized and personalized program no matter where in the world you go. But it will cost you! Elite, experienced and highly credentialed trainers can charge anywhere from $125 to $275 for an hour-long session.

Contacting smaller gyms in the area and asking for referrals is one way to find a trainer. Or turn to social media and ask for guidance. Taking a look at a trainer's social media platform or website should give you an idea of what type of specialized technique each offers.

Lastly, don't forget to use the right credit card if you plan to pay for a gym membership, day pass to a fitness club, private instructor, etc. These kinds of purchases don't qualify for the typical credit card bonus categories, so using one of the best cards for everyday spending is likely your best bet.

With the Chase Freedom Unlimited, for example, you'll earn 1.5% cash back (1.5 Chase Ultimate Rewards points) on purchases - including those made at health clubs. If you spend $1,500 per year on fitness club expenses you'll earn 2,250 Ultimate Rewards points, which are worth $45 according to TPG's valuations . That's not a bad return for purchases you'd planned on making anyway.

Exercise When Traveling With Portable Workout Equipment

Traveling is fun, and so is exercising, so how do you combine the two? Well, with portable workout equipment that lets you exercise no matter where you are.

After traveling for a couple of years, my wife and I figured out what kind of equipment works best for us, but it took us a while.

Now we exercise daily with resistance loop bands (click to view on Amazon) , and we’re having more fun than we ever had in a gym because we can do it anywhere.

Outdoors in the desert, playgrounds, parks, in the RV, or even in airplanes (okay, we haven’t tried that yet).

Today I would like to help you find the best travel workout equipment so you can stay in shape no matter where you go.

There are ways to do strength training, cardio, and yoga even if you travel by air and need something that fits in a suitcase.

Maybe you’re a truck driver and need something compact and portable to stay in shape on the road.

It’s also possible that you’re looking for mobile equipment to bring to work, and we’ll talk about a couple of office-friendly tools as well.

Best Portable Strength Training/Weights Workout Equipment

Fitnessery ab roller.

Check Price at Amazon

When it comes to portable exercise equipment, the ab roller is one of the most known tools in the world.

It’s nothing new, but it’s one of the best ab exercise accessories for everybody that wants to strengthen their core .

With its distinctive look and compact design, it’s easy to travel with. Travel by air, car, RV, van, or even by foot, and the ab roller won’t be a hassle to pack or add tons of weight to your bag.

The ab roller wheel will not only make your abs sore, but it will fit in most bags since it’s so compact and light.

If you’re traveling by air, the ab roller wheel will not add a lot of weight and could even go in your carry-on bag. It’s the ultimate fitness buddy!

Using the ab roller is easy and does not require a gym or any other exercise equipment.

It’s easier to do on a hardwood floor than outdoors on gravel, but most ab rollers are made with materials that can handle rough grounds as well.

The Fitnessery Ab Roller is just one of many ab rollers on the market.

This particular one comes with a knee pad which you’re going to want to protect your knees. It also comes with two e-books related to working out abs and dieting.

When using the ab roller, you want to make sure you have proper form not to hurt your lower back.

I recommend watching the video below about this specific exercise. Do a couple of sets with the ab roller, and you’ll wake up with sore abs.

gym to travel

While the ab roller wheel mostly works out your core and strengthens your abs, side, and lower back, it also activates your upper back, biceps, chest, thighs, and shoulders.

You should, however, focus on and think about flexing your abs while doing the exercise. Doing so makes it easier to do it the right way and not cause injury.

But don’t stop there, there are several other exercises that you can do with the ab roller.

Yuri Elkaim has written a great post about different exercises using on the ab wheel.

I recommend the Fitnessery kit because it’s an affordable quality product that can be used both indoors and outdoors.

With a wheel made out of heavy-duty PVC and rubber and a handle made out of stainless steel, it will take a beating and last a long time.

It also has comfortable grips so you can focus on doing the exercise right instead of how your hands are aching.

Ab Roller for Abs Workout - Ab Roller Wheel Exercise Equipment - Ab...

Mix the ab roller with some bodyweight exercises, and you can do a full-body workout no matter where you are.

For the best bodyweight workout, check out the FAQ at the bottom where I answer a question about this.

If you’re not looking to buy an ab roller for yourself, it also makes an excellent gift for people that like to spend time at the gym or people that want to get into exercising but haven’t taken the step yet.

Just make sure your friend learns how to do the roll correctly not to hurt their lower back. For other great gifts for travelers, check out this post.

NewMe Fitness Bodyweight Exercise Cards

Bodyweight exercises are done using only your body as weight and is a way of training that is very easy to do no matter where you are.

If you travel with limited space, knowing a couple of simple bodyweight exercises can be very useful.

There are lots of workouts to do both for beginners and more advanced fitness fanatics that will leave you sweaty and wake up sore in the morning.

NewMe Fitness makes this deck of cards that each have an exercise on them. Each card shows in pictures how a specific activity is performed.

On the other side, you’ll find the exercise explained in words, what muscles it targets, and what to think about. It’s like having a personal trainer in your bag at all times.

The pack includes 50 cards with exercises targeting your core, abs, glutes, chest, shoulders, arms, upper body, and legs, in other words, you can do a full-body workout using only these cards for guidance.

Included are also some cardio tips, stretches, a goals card, and several workouts. In total, there are 62 cards.

What I like about this deck of cards is that they will take you through a full workout, while being extremely portable, lightweight, and easy to travel with.

For somebody that travels full-time in my RV, the more compact my workout equipment is, the better, and you won’t find anything more compact than these.

A kit like this is perfect for RV, van, car, truck drivers, or air travelers.

NewMe Fitness Bodyweight Workout Cards, Instructional Fitness Deck for...

Sure, an app on your phone could do the same thing, but then you have to focus on not letting your phone screen go dark while you’re exercising, and keeping your phone charged.

This deck of cards will always be there and easy to access. No machines, electronics, or other workout equipment is needed.

For some of the workouts, I recommend using a yoga mat (click to view on Amazon) that you put on the floor.

The reason is that some of the exercises are done seated or on your knees, and a gym mat will make them easier to do without hurting your knees.

Simple bodyweight exercises are also great for seniors.

Always having a pack of activities in your bag as a senior will make sure you will get your exercises and stretches done and keep your body in good shape.

Always consult with a professional about what exercises would be the best for you.

What if you’re into strength training, will the bodyweight cards be useful? Yes, definitely!

What I like about bodyweight is that there are exercises for everybody. Both beginners and serious athletes can gain from doing bodyweight.

Some of the cards in this kit also have a picture showing harder ways to do an exercise.

For example, the single-leg squat can be done both with and without a bench or a chair, where without a chair is much harder and not an exercise I recommend for beginners.

Sometimes it’s hard to get into the exercise mood when you’re in a hotel room or nature.

What gets me going is some great music in my ears, and I recommend using noise-cancelling headphones so you can turn all of the outside noise off completely.

Check out our post on the best noise-cancelling headphones so you can work out in peace while listening to your favorite tunes.

If you’re interested in bodyweight workouts, check out the FAQ at the bottom of this post where I answer a question about working out with no gym equipment whatsoever.

Weinas 11 Piece Resistance Bands Set

Another tool handy for beginners, experienced, and seniors are resistance bands. Resistance bands are known for their portability and ease of use.

They’re very beginner-friendly, which is why they’re often used by physical therapists to help clients strengthen their bodies enough to move and do daily activities.

The resistance band kit by Weinas comes with tons of accessories to assist you during a workout.

Two foam handles, two door anchors, two ankle straps, and a carrying bag to put everything in while you’re on the move.

If you have ever been to a gym and done exercises on a rope machine, you’re going to like the door anchor.

With the door anchors, you can create more natural push and pull movements by anchoring the straps to the top of a closed door.

The light foam handles connect to the bands with carabiners and can easily be swapped between the many bands.

Ankle straps are included to make it easier to perform some of the leg exercises often found in resistance band workouts.

See Also:  Best Plastic Rugs & Mats For Outdoor, RV & Patio Use

Weinas has put a lot of thought into these bands and added an extra nylon sleeve to protect both the bands and your body.

Most resistance bands on the market are “naked” and can whip you if they snap or by accident.

Included with the kit is also an e-book. The e-book is a workout guide that will teach you how to exercise with resistance bands.

Five bands with different resistance allow for a full workout. The bands offer 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 pounds of resistance.

This is an excellent variety for both endurance exercises and lower rep strength training.

Each band is individually colored to make each easier to recognize, but a small tag is also sewn onto each with the respective resistance printed.

resistance-bands-workout-exercise-portable-the-camping-nerd

What I like about resistance bands is that they’re very portable, lightweight, and versatile.

Even though the bands in this kit range from 20 to 40 pounds, you can add several bands together to create more resistance when needed. The exercises are simple yet rewarding.

I exercise with resistance bands and what I like the most is that I can do my workouts no matter where I am.

I can be outdoors, in the RV, at a playground, or at a friend’s house and get a great workout. The bands are light enough to bring with me on a hike, that should tell you something.

If you or somebody you know travels for work, resistance bands are a great way to get a workout done for all body parts.

I have used my bands in hotel rooms, and it’s a freeing feeling when you can stay in shape even on vacation. The fact that they’re so lightweight makes it all possible.

Resistance bands also make a great gift to guys and girls that like to exercise.

Even if somebody goes to the gym a lot, resistance bands can be of great benefit when they can’t make it to the gym, or even better, be brought to the gym and used together with free weights.

They’re a great gym accessory for both men and women.

The YouTube channel HASfit has made a great video showing a full 30-minute resistance band workout that is easy to follow.

For some of the exercises, a gym or yoga mat is recommended to make it easier on your knees.

If you’re a more experienced lifter, I recommend Undersun Fitness Loop Bands Set down below that offer more resistance.

I also recommend using bands together with regular weights if you have access to a gym.

Studies have shown that it’s a great combination, and I suggest reading through this study if you want to learn more about it .

Meister Elite Portable Sandbag Kettlebells

Meister Elite Portable Sand Kettlebell - Soft Sandbag Weight - 10lb /...

Another popular way of exercising is with kettlebells.

Most free weight exercises can be done using a kettlebell, so it’s easy to understand why most gyms have a couple of kettlebells in a corner.

Kettlebells have also become a popular accessory for yoga.

The thing with kettlebells is that just like free weights, they weigh.

That’s what this company is trying to solve with this product.

Meister Elite Portable Kettlebells are sandbags that you fill with sand, gravel, or water until it weighs the desired weight for a specific exercise.

The kettlebells are not sold in a kit but singular. There are a couple of sizes to choose from. 0-15 pounds, 0-30 pounds, and 0-45 pounds.

Selecting a heavier weight means that the bag will be bigger to fit more sand or water.

A comfortable rubber handle makes it easy to hold the kettlebell during your exercises.

If you’re new to kettlebells, here are ten great kettlebell exercises to get you started.

gym to travel

I love portable workout equipment like this. They’re so lightweight and compact when not in use and can be put in any travel bag.

If you’re going on vacation to the beach, this will be a great tool to have.

Fill it up with some sand from the beach, do your exercises, and then go for a swim. No machines are necessary. Doesn’t that sound fantastic?

The exercises shown in the picture above are great for people of all ages, and it doesn’t matter how much experience you have.

They’re simple to do and will make both a beginner and a fit person sore. They’re also good for seniors using less weight.

Kettlebells are so versatile, which also makes them a great gift for friends that like to work out.

Even if your friend is into strength training, a kettlebell can help them progress when they’re traveling.

If you can’t decide between resistance bands and kettlebells, let me help you.

A set of resistance bands will be easier to get a workout started with, and if you’re aiming for hypertrophy or strength, resistance bands are the better choice.

The fact that you can combine several bands to create more resistance is a great feature on its own.

Kettlebells are great for some bodyweight exercises to add some weight to them, but you’re more limited since the max load in this kit is 45 pounds.

If you’re new to lifting or prefer endurance exercises for more tone than muscle, kettlebells are a great option.

Last but not least, I think kettlebells are fun to work with since you can do some swings and workout differently compared to resistance bands or free weights.

Undersun Fitness Loop Bands Set

This set by Undersun Fitness is also a resistance band kit, but they’re different in the way that they’re loop bands and don’t have handles.

The guy behind these bands is James Grage, a YouTuber who in the past couple of years states that he works out exclusively with loop bands.

Before I praise these bands too much, I want to make it clear that I am not associated with Undersun Fitness or sponsored by them.

I am excited about this product though, as I have been in and out of the gym for the past eight years.

It was not until now that I found a product so portable, light, and compact usable outside of the gym that can give me a workout as a free weights gym can.

Since my wife and I started traveling full time in our travel trailer, we only workout with these resistance bands. We purchased this kit that comes with five bands.

Each band is different from the others and offers different levels of resistance. The resistance levels are 0-15 lbs, 15-25 lbs, 30-60 lbs, 45-100 lbs, and 50-120 lbs.

If the resistance is not enough, take a step back to make the band longer, which increases the resistance.

Undersun Resistance Bands for Working Out | 5-Level Heavy Resistance...

You can buy the bands separately as well if you want to try them out.

I recommend starting with the light bands. In the beginning, the X-large 50-120 pound band won’t be used much unless you’re somebody with a lot of gym experience.

The reason we decided to go with loop bands is that we had a set of resistance bands like the ones above with handles, but felt that we wanted to try something new.

We like both kinds, but the amount of resistance you can get with these loop bands is higher than the handle bands.

Compound exercises work multiple muscle groups at the same time and are what most lifters start their workouts with.

Exercises like squats, deadlifts, bench presses, and pull-ups are all compound exercises.

With the Undersun Fitness Loop Bands Set , we can begin our workouts with these using a lot of resistance.

Just like with the other kind of resistance bands, you can add several bands together to create more resistance. We haven’t gotten to where that has been needed, but it’s a neat feature.

When we travel down the road, we can stop pretty much anywhere and get our workouts done.

In public parks, playgrounds, football fields, or a relative’s house during holidays.

There is no need for a gym, machines, or other tools to get our workout done.

If you travel for work and spend days or weeks away from home at a time, you’re going to fall in love with these bands quickly when you realize the potential they have to break a sweat.

Some hotels have gyms, but they often lack free weights to do the heavier lifts, these will let you work out without leaving the room.

James Grage has lots of videos showing how he exercises with resistance bands on his YouTube channel , but for a full-body workout, check out the video down below.

He goes through not only chest, legs, and back exercises but also shoulders and arms.

gym to travel

The bands come with a string bag for easy transport. They’re easy to pack down into a suitcase and travel with all over the world.

I like to call them a portable all in one gym tool since I can work out my whole body no matter where I go.

If you know somebody that travels full time in an RV or for work and struggles with not being able to visit a gym, these make a great gift.

As someone that has been lifting weights for the past eight years, I can tell you that I don’t go anywhere now without my bands. They’re great for both men and women.

Resistance bands are also great for truck drivers. Since these are stored in a bag when not in use, they won’t take up a lot of space in your truck.

Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells Pair

Some people have tried resistance bands, bodyweight exercises, kettlebells, or a deck of cards with exercises, but they can’t quit using free weights. Free weights are the most traditional tool in the gym.

Using gravity to create resistance instead of a band is the way some people like to do it, and that’s fine.

Fortunately, there are ways to lift heavy weights when you’re traveling, with the downside being that you have to bring the heavy weights with you. But if it has to be done, this is the way.

The Bowflex adjustable dumbbells are sold in pair and let you adjust how heavy you want the dumbbells to be. When I lived in an apartment, this is what I used to exercise at home.

You can set the weights from 5 to 52.5 pounds. They adjust by turning a dial to the desired weight. I like this kind better than the adjustable dumbbells with discs you take off because discs take longer to adjust. With these adjustable dumbbells, it’s done within seconds.

BowFlex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells

The reason I believe they’re the best free weights for traveling if you want real weights is that they weigh 118 pounds in total.

That might not sound like a good thing, but imagine bringing a weight set with you capable of the same weight. Having separate dumbbell sets weighing 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 pounds would weigh 300 pounds.

If you travel by air, it won’t be possible to bring free weights like these, but if you travel on the road in a car, van, RV, or truck, it’s not impossible.

Match it with a portable workout bench like the Escape Fitness Deck Workout bench (click to view on Amazon) , and you’ll have a gym with you at all times ready to go.

It’s not the most portable solution to working out when traveling, but it’s the one that will be the most like an actual portable gym.

Menshealth has a great post about the 10 best dumbbell exercises that you can read by clicking here.

Note that Bowflex also makes a bigger set that can be set from 10 to 90 pounds, the Bowflex SelectTech 1090 dumbbell (click to view on Amazon) , not sold in pair.

ASICS Women's Gel-Contend 6 Running Shoes

Best Portable Cardio Workout Equipment

If there is one thing most of us did as kids, it’s skipping rope. During the breaks in school, my friends and I would go out and jump and try to do it for as long as possible.

What we didn’t think about then is how good of a cardio workout it is. The fact is that jumping rope for only 10 minutes is equal to a 30-minute run.

Not only is skipping rope an excellent cardio workout to burn a lot of calories in a short amount of time, but all you need is a rope, which is extremely portable.

It might be the most compact workout accessory in this whole post. You won’t notice it in your suitcase or bag when traveling.

Skipping, or jumping rope can be done in more than one way for a better workout. Check out the image below by Darebee.com for a full jump rope workout.

gym to travel

The is a premium kit made with high-quality materials so you can focus more on your workout than your gear.

Steel bearings make the rope smooth to skip with, and the set is very lightweight at less than three ounces.

If the rope is too long for you, you can easily adjust it by shortening it with some wire cutters.

A downloadable manual is included with your purchase and tells you how to size it for your length. It also includes a guide with exercises.

Skipping rope can be done anywhere you have a flat area to stand on. It’s hard to find exercise equipment this lightweight and so effective.

Sometimes there is not enough time to go for a run, or it’s way too hot outside, then a jump rope can be used indoors and with better results.

ASICS Women’s Running Shoes

This one might be obvious to most of you, but a great way to get a cardio workout done when you’re traveling is by running.

So why not bring a great pair of running shoes, so you’re always ready to go?

A lot of hotels nowadays have an exercise room with treadmills and sometimes a machine or a couple of free weights.

You should use this room to get your exercises done when you’re on vacation.

Even if it’s 100 degrees outside, you can get a run done in this air-conditioned room.

I recommend ASICS running shoes because it’s what my wife prefers.

They’re not the fanciest running shoe there is, but great for the occasional run.

There are running shoes for all budgets so if you’re new to running I recommend getting a relatively cheap but good pair so you can go for a couple of runs to see whether you like it or not.

I don’t recommend running without running shoes.

When buying brand shoes online, you must be careful not to buy knockoffs. Usually, the reviews will let you know so you can make a judgment.

The most significant difference between running shoes and regular shoes is that they usually have more cushioning in the heel.

They’re designed that way to handle the impact better when you run. I recommend reading this publication on selecting the right shoe for you depending on your specific foot pattern.

You might wonder, can I wear my running shoes all the time?

While I agree that it sounds comfortable to wear your running shoes even when you’re exploring a city, it’s not a great idea to mix walking and running with the same shoe.

The reason is that when you run, the shoe gets worn in a different pattern than when you walk.

What I recommend doing is having a pair of running shoes for running and a pair for walking.

The walking pair doesn’t have to be as cushioned as your running pair, but they should still be comfortable enough to not hurt your feet after exploring a city for a day.

Since most shoes are lightweight, they won’t add too much weight to your suitcase.

That’s what my wife and I do, and we both like how most running shoes are more breathable than sneakers, so our feet don’t get as warm and sweaty from all the walking.

While running is an exercise most of us can do, it can be harder to go running at night. For this, I recommend a great headlamp so you can see what’s ahead.

Even if you have been running since you were a kid, it’s worth it to read a little bit about how to run correctly.

Running correctly is essential not to injure yourself in the long run and cause unnecessary wear and tear on your muscles and joints.

As with any exercise, doing it with the proper form is crucial.

This image made by primermagazine.com goes through the most critical points when it comes to running.

gym to travel

A cardio exercise like running is also suitable for seniors. Studies have shown that it’s a good way to slow down the maximal endurance capacity loss for people aged 30-70.

While sedentary adults lose about 10 percent of their capacity every decade, people that did exercises like running lost only about 5 percent until age 70.

Sunny Health & Fitness Mini Stepper with Resistance Bands

There are not a lot of portable exercise machines that work, but this mini exercise stepper is one of the few.

A mini stepper is a low-impact aerobic exercise that mostly gives you a good cardio workout.

Its hydraulic drive system gives resistance hard enough to feel like you’re going on a brisk walk.

It can be used anywhere there is a flat surface which makes it a great option for travelers.

It weighs 15 pounds so while it could fit in a suitcase and be taken all over the world, it’s more for car, van, or RV travelers.

I also recommend it for truck drivers that sit still for hours on end. Getting on a mini stepper for a while after a day of driving can extend your life by years.

The range of motion on a mini stepper is more limited compared to a bigger machine, but still very effective for being in such a small and compact form.

It’s not the machine you build huge muscles on, but one that can give you a good cardio exercise and tone your body.

If you’re stuck in a hotel room because it’s too hot outside but still want to exercise, a mini stepper is a great tool.

gym to travel

There are mini steppers for all budgets, and while most of them look the same, it’s important to take a more in-depth look at what features they offer.

This one made by Sunny Health & Fitness is a popular one that I like for two specific reasons.

First, it comes with resistance bands that you can use while you’re stepping.

I have praised resistance bands above and the many exercises you can do with them. I like that Sunny Health & Fitness put these on the mini stepper to expand the workouts you can do on this little machine.

The second reason I like this specific model is that there is a height adjustment. This will let you choose between short bursts or long steps.

That’s a useful feature since most mini steppers only have one level of steps, and being able to choose means that you can do different workouts on it.

Shorter steps will be easier to do for a long time, and if you would like to stand on it for an hour, this is the setting to choose.

Longer steps will be more like the bigger machines found at gyms and work out your legs more.

How many calories you’re going to burn will also depend on your step intensity. For a tougher leg exercise, do long steps with high intensity.

A small digital monitor shows the step count and calories burned. This makes it easy to track your workouts and record them on your phone or paper.

For a quick stationary cardio workout, mini steppers are a great and practical choice.

Mix it with some rope skipping or a couple of bodyweight exercises, and you’ll burn a lot of calories in a short amount of time.

A portable exercise stepper is also a great option for somebody working in an office.

These are portable enough to take to work during the week and put under your desk. You don’t have to do it intensively if you’re doing it for an hour or two to benefit from it.

Exerpeutic Folding Exercise Bike

Who knew that an exercise bike could be portable?

This model by a company called Exerpeutic measures 22 by 20 by 55.5 inches when folded up, which makes it portable enough to bring with you in a car, van, and RV.

You would have to be brave to bring it with you as a carry-on, but it might be possible. It won’t fit in a suitcase, however.

It has a 300-pound weight limit, with a nice large seat cushion for comfort during long bike rides.

A large LCD display will show distance, calories burned, time, speed, and your current heart rate.

Exercise bikes are one of the most popular forms of exercise, especially in gyms.

Every gym I have ever been to, and that includes workout rooms at hotels, has had a couple of exercise bikes. My grandpa even used to have one in his office!

What’s great about exercise bikes is that they usually have several levels of resistance.

This specific one by Exerpeutic has eight different levels of tension. It allows the user to choose if they want to go on a light bike ride or a heavier, more intense ride.

I recommend doing HIIT cardio, which stands for high-intensity interval training. HIIT is easy to do on a bike. It’s a great cardio and leg exercise.

Check out the video below to understand how a HIIT workout can be done on a portable exercise bike like this.

gym to travel

You might have heard that HIIT is the best kind of cardio exercise, but most studies done surrounding the subject haven’t found that to be 100 percent true.

The best way to exercise is to do a mix of things. Do resistance training some days, go for a brisk walk some days, and do HIIT cardio once a week.

Nerdfitness.com has a great post on the subject that I recommend reading if you’re interested in what the studies have said.

Whether you choose to do HIIT cardio or sit on the bike for 30 minutes isn’t as important as getting on the bike in the first place.

As long as you get on the bike a couple of times a week, you’re doing great!

While exercising on your bike, I recommend playing some music to get you excited and in the right mood.

Check out our post on the best portable Bluetooth speakers.

Working out on a bike is simple enough for anybody with functioning legs to do it. The downside is that it’s not as portable as some of the other tools.

Exerpeutic also has a model called ExerWork 1000 (click to view on Amazon) that is a folding bike with an adjustable desk.

If you do most of your work on a laptop, this can be your desk while also being your exercise tool. I

can see somebody leaving this set up in their RV or semi-truck permanently, to have a place both to work and move your legs to stay in shape.

Schwinn Loop Folding Bicycle

Last but not least, I must show you this folding bicycle.

There is nothing quite like exploring a town or a road on a bicycle, and with this compact folding bike, it can become a reality without being too much of a hassle to travel with.

Schwinn makes this 7-speed model with front and rear fenders, a rear carry rack, and a kickstand.

The wheels are 20-inches, which makes it perfect for going around a town or the campground.

It folds down and measures 29.5 by 29 by 19 inches when in storage which makes it a great small option.

A popular way to bring bikes when traveling is to get a hitch bike rack that can hold several bikes.

That requires quite a lot of work every time you want to get on the road though, as you must make sure they’re secured and safe for the highway.

With folding bikes, you can store them easier either inside the RV or in the back of your truck.

Schwinn’s folding bike weighs 33 pounds. The selling feature here is that it folds and can be stored easier.

folding-exercise-bike-the-camping-nerd

I don’t recommend taking this kind of bike on any intermediate mountain biking trail, but it’s good enough to take on scenic trails or through cities.

Just remember to wear a helmet and carry a patch kit (click to view on Amazon) in case you get a flat tire.

All you have to worry about when it comes to bike rides is the weather.

I recommend traveling with a great weather station with forecasts built-in , so you will be ready for whatever mother nature decides to do.

Biking is a great way to get a cardio workout while having lots of fun. It’s for all ages and great for your body.

With a compact folding bike like this, the bikes can be stored in an RV without any extra accessories needed.

Gaiam Yoga Mat Folding Travel Fitness & Exercise | Foldable for All...

Best Portable Yoga Workout Equipment

Gaiam folding travel yoga mat.

You have most likely heard about Yoga . The exercise form focuses on becoming more flexible, improving your breath, and learning how to relax.

It’s a philosophy that I think most of us need more of.

I think part of why yoga has become popular is not only because it’s a philosophy a lot of us feel like we need more of, but because it’s so easy to do without any equipment.

The only tool that makes it easier to do no matter where you are is a yoga mat.

Yoga mats are great not only for yoga, pilates exercises, and stretches but for strength training, cardio, and resistance band exercises we have talked about earlier.

There is no need to go to a gym for your workouts when you have this mat in your suitcase or backpack.

On hard floors, it adds a comfortable base to do your yoga exercises on.

In other places, like a hotel room, it lets you do your workouts on the floor without touching the nasty hotel carpet.

The Gaiam Folding Travel Yoga Mat is the perfect travel mat since it folds down and becomes a compact 10 by 12 inches.

It’s 2 mm thick and has a sticky non-slip texture so you can focus more on your form than on not slipping.

When it’s unfolded, the mat measures 68 by 24 inches.

It weighs 1.8 pounds which makes it portable enough to throw in a suitcase or bring with you in a car, van, RV, or truck.

Gaiam lets you choose from five different colors and patterns.

If you have never done yoga but are interested in getting started, I recommend reading this post by Kristin McGee over at DoYouYoga with ten great beginner poses to get you started.

With a portable yoga mat, you can do these anywhere.

  • Folds to Small Size
  • Great for All Ages

NewMe Fitness Yoga Cards

The same company that makes the bodyweight deck of cards we looked at up in the weights section also makes these yoga cards.

Seventy cards have a unique yoga pose that will both teach and remind you how to do the most common yoga poses.

These are great not only for beginners but intermediate and advanced yoga fanatics since it can be hard to remember poses sometimes.

With 70 of them in your pocket, you can be an expert no matter where you are.

A deck of cards like this is very portable, lightweight, and small. Why not have a collection of different types of exercises and stretches?

Each card shows a different pose illustrated. The name of the specific post is also printed together with a card number so you can quickly find what you’re looking for.

On the back of each card, you’ll find instructions on how to do a specific pose.

It will also let you know how hard a pose is on a scale.

NewMe Fitness also includes these neat sequence cards; nine of them come with this pack.

As an example, one sequence is called “Yoga for beginners” and tells you card numbers and in what order it wants you to do them.

It’s a creative way of including nine workout guides without taking up a lot of space.

The best yoga poses are the ones you can do and gain something from, but I recommend starting with the easy poses in the beginning and working your way up.

I like these cards a lot because they’re beginner-friendly. Anybody can get through a yoga workout with these, without a gym or extra accessories.

A yoga mat makes it easier to do at home, or in hotel rooms, but I recommend visiting a nearby park when you’re traveling and doing it on the grass.

In addition to yoga cards, I recommend traveling with a portable power bank to keep your phone and other devices charged up at all times.

Portable battery packs can be brought onto planes and fit in any bag. Check out our post on the best alternatives on the market.

If you have a friend that has been talking about yoga but can’t seem to get started, or recently started, then this deck of cards makes a great gift.

URBNfit Exercise/Stability ball

When I was a kid, I would always get excited when I saw one of these balls.

I would jump on them and go flying across the room. I used it more than my mother who bought it to do some exercises.

A company called URBNFit makes this exercise/stability ball which comes in lots of different sizes and colors.

You can choose between five different sizes, 45 cm to 85 cm, and 11 different colors.

The size that’s the best for you depends on your height.

URBNFit Exercise Ball - Yoga Ball for Workout, Pilates, Pregnancy,...

Exercise balls can be used for not only exercises of different kinds like cardio and yoga, but also as desk chairs.

The reason that this has become increasingly popular in the past decade is that it’s believed that it increases your posture, engages your core, and decreases discomfort compared to regular desk chairs.

So, is there any truth to that? The studies say: No.

If you plan on buying an exercise ball, let’s use it for exercising and not sitting on while getting your work done.

Fortunately, a workout guide in PDF form is included with this kit that shows a handful of exercises.

However, I recommend looking up some videos online like the one below for a good full workout.

gym to travel

Traveling with a huge ball is of course not optimal, but as you might already know, it deflates and inflates with a pump.

A dual-action inflation pump is included to inflate it no matter where you are.

When deflated, it’s portable and lightweight enough to put in a suitcase.

It’s a great accessory for car, RV, or van travelers since it barely takes any space at all when deflated.

It’s very common to use resistance bands with stability balls in strength training routines since it lets you do exercises like chest presses and seated rows on the move.

Verywellfit.com has a great post on some of the most common uses for this.

If you plan on doing strength training with the stability ball, I recommend choosing the kind with a stability base (click to view on Amazon).

The reason I recommend using stability balls for yoga is that it makes it easier to start doing the more advanced yoga poses sooner.

Using an exercise ball when you first start with the more intermediate and advanced poses means that you can slowly build the muscles and the balance you’re going to need to do them without the ball.

It also makes a great gift for somebody that struggles with the more advanced poses.

JBM Cork Yoga Blocks

If you’re into Yoga, you have probably seen yoga blocks in videos or a class. They’re a great yoga accessory for beginners and intermediates.

The reason they’re good for beginners is that they can be helpful for certain poses or stretches that you’re not 100 percent comfortable with yet.

A good yoga block is made from cork, and that’s exactly what these are made of. JBM sells these in pairs, and with the purchase, you also get a yoga strap.

Yoga straps are used to help you improve your poses while increasing your flexibility and physical rehabilitation.

So why use cork for yoga blocks? Because cork is an excellent odor-free, non-absorbent, and moisture-proof material.

Perfect for yoga due to their soft grip and not the kind of exercise equipment that will get filled with bacteria.

Note that while the blocks come in different colors, only one of them is made with cork, the rest are foam.

Foam is also a great and safe material to use, but I prefer the grip of the cork.

Yoga blocks are brick-sized and weigh 0.38 pound each. Each block measures 9 by 6 by 4 inches.

The YouTube channel PsycheTruth has a great video on how to use yoga blocks.

gym to travel

I like the JBM Cork Yoga Blocks because they’re portable, adding less than a pound to your suitcase, meaning that it’s very travel-friendly.

You don’t have to stop doing yoga because you travel since you can bring a travel mat and yoga blocks with you.

Sure, you can’t fold these blocks in half, but they’re such a lightweight and compact exercise tool that it might be worth bringing.

Finding a place to store these in a car, van, RV, or semi-truck shouldn’t be a problem either.

Yoga is great because you don’t need a gym, machines, weights, or specialized gear.

This kind of accessory is only to assist you, making it easier for your body to do certain poses and stretches.

  • Helps Beginners Do Yoga
  • Yoga Strap Included

Nature’s Integrity Yoga Wheel

Another yoga accessory used much like the blocks is the yoga wheel. It’s a great tool for beginners that are looking to improve their poses and stretches.

Nature’s Integrity sells this high-quality yoga wheel. It’s 13 inches and made with quality materials to keep you safe while doing the more difficult stretches.

The wheel doesn’t flex or bend while you’re using it.

It has a 650-pound weight capacity, a non-slip and sweat resistant surface, and thick TPE foam padding around the whole wheel for comfort and support.

Getting started is easy, as Nature’s Integrity includes a workout guide in PDF form with 18 exercises and stretches to try.

The wheel weighs 2.8 pounds and can easily fit in a suitcase. Its portability and utility are why it makes such a great accessory for a traveling yoga lover.

When you learn how to do the exercises, you’ll be set for life and be able to do yoga no matter where you are.

It’s five inches wide, so you will feel safe and stable while stretching.

The padding is 6mm thick for comfort so you can focus entirely on your form instead of how much it hurts.

A wheel with thick padding is obviously preferred since you will be putting a lot of your body weight on it for certain exercises and poses.

yoga-wheel-exercise-portable-travel-the-camping-nerd

So, is it good for your body to roll over a wheel?

Yes, when done right, it’s a great way to stretch your back and spine, improve your range of motion, and help with lower or upper back pain.

The size of it makes it better to use than the small foam roller kind.

YogiApproved.com has a great video on how to start using a yoga wheel.

gym to travel

I recommend starting with the easier stretches, like stretching your back after a long day of work.

Get to know the wheel and find your balance before you try anything more advanced.

Even if you have used a yoga block or wheel before, each one can be different from the other, so for safety reasons go through a couple of easy workouts before you advance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Portable Exercise Equipment

What exercises or workouts can i do with no workout equipment when traveling.

Working out when traveling is extremely easy to do even if you don’t have any gym equipment.

You shouldn’t feel like you need to buy anything since there are so many other things you can do and count as exercise.

If you’re a frequent gym-goer and mostly exercise by lifting weights, it’s a little bit harder to do it without any equipment at all, but it’s still possible with bodyweight exercises.

Here are a couple of ways you can exercise when you travel that don’t require any gym equipment (except for a good pair of running/hiking shoes for those activities).

Hiking is so good for you, and available pretty much anywhere you go.

There are hikes everywhere, and finding trails to hike is easy to do with a website like AllTrails.com .

Whenever my wife and I visit a new city or town, we look up popular hikes in the area. You can see so much more of an area by taking a walk.

It doesn’t have to be a hike that takes all day.

Climb a steep mountain, and you’ll get a tough cardio workout done in a couple of hours that will keep burning calories throughout the day.

If you’re staying at a hotel, there might be a pool available that you can use for a swim.

I prefer swimming outdoors in the ocean and rivers, but hotel pools are better than nothing if that’s the only thing available.

How many calories you burn when you swim depends on how much you weigh, and if you’re more interested in that, I recommend checking out Active.com’s article on the subject .

Just like there are trails for hiking, there are lots of trails for biking.

Mountain biking is so much fun and is an activity and workout available to anybody of any age with any experience.

Even if you have never been mountain biking before, you can rent a bike and try out a beginner-friendly trail.

It can be extremely taxing on your legs and give you a great workout.

Nowadays it’s very common to rent bikes in cities as well, so you can rent a bike and explore the town while getting a cardio workout.

It’s safer than renting an electric scooter, and your body will gain something from it.

We talked about running shoes in the cardio part and how it’s a great way to get exercise.

I have never been anywhere where I have felt like I can’t go for a run, so keep it on your mind.

If you’re more into strength training than cardio, I recommend doing HIIT cardio, high-intensity interval training .

Thomas DeLauer has a video about HIIT and how to do it properly.

gym to travel

Exploring a new-to-you city or town on foot is always fun. All you need is a good pair of shoes.

Take a brisk walk through a city to see what it has to offer, and I bet you will feel good when you go to bed that night.

To me, walking is very energizing, and I like being able to stop and go as I want. It’s relaxing and enjoyable.

Walking around a city

I bet you have walked down several floors of stairs sometimes and ended up out of breath, or even sore the day after.

Stairs are such a great workout that they even make machines to imitate the movement.

If you’re at a hotel, there are probably several floors of stairs you can climb. Maybe you’re visiting a capital city in the United States.

Then you should head to the capitol building because that’s another place where there often are lots of stairs in front of the building.

One of my favorite ways to exercise is by doing bodyweight exercises.

If you’re somebody that has been working out for years, you might think that your body won’t be enough to give you a workout, but believe me, it can.

Bodyweight exercises are exactly what they sound like; all you’re using is your body.

You don’t need any accessories or equipment, and it can be done anywhere in the world.

Do you know squats and push-ups? Those are bodyweight exercises.

Finding ways to work out when traveling is a lot about being creative.

You don’t need a gym to get a good workout. It’s all about knowing how to use things around us to get the blood pumping.

What are the best bodyweight exercises for beginners?

There are lots of bodyweight exercises that are great for beginners. Some of the best are ones you have probably heard about, like squats, pull-ups, push-ups, and the plank.

I recommend watching this video by Fraser Wilson for a quick 10-minute bodyweight workout.

gym to travel

How important is it to exercise when you’re traveling?

During a time when cardiovascular diseases are the number one cause of death globally , most of us need to start being more active.

It’s not always easy to do, depending on where you live. Some live full time in their RVs and travel around and feel like they don’t have access to any exercise equipment or gyms.

The first thing I want you to remember is that you don’t necessarily have to go to a gym to get a workout, you also don’t have to lift heavy weights.

Exercise can be as easy as biking, swimming, climbing stairs, jogging, or even walking.

According to the American Heart Association, 30 minutes a day, five days a week will improve your heart health , which leads to a reduced risk of heart disease.

Exercise while traveling is just as important as exercising while not traveling.

If you’re a truck driver and spend a significant amount of time on your butt while driving, exercise becomes even more important .

What is the best travel bag for workout clothes?

If you want a special bag just for your workout clothes and workout accessories, I recommend looking for a duffle bag like this one by Under Armour (Click to view on Amazon) .

The reason I prefer duffle bags instead of backpacks for my workout gear is that I like being able to both put it on my shoulder and carry it in my hand.

It’s easier to take in and out of a vehicle, and bring on a plane. They also appear more sturdy and durable.

What is the best portable pull-up station?

It’s hard to find a pull-up station that fits in a suitcase, but there are some that are portable enough to fit in vehicles, like the Stamina Power Towers (click to view on Amazon) .

You do have to take it apart to fit it in most vehicles, but when you put it together you have a tower that you can not only do pull-ups on, but also tricep dips, push-ups, and sit-ups.

The most portable exercise equipment for pull-ups is the doorway pull-up bars, like this one from Perfect Fitness (click to view on Amazon) .

It can hold up to 300 pounds, but you need to find a safe door frame to use it on.

Its portability makes it perfect for travelers that stay in hotels. It weighs 8 pounds.

How much cardio workout can you get from a portable foot peddler?

Portable foot peddlers like this one from Vaunn (click to view on Amazon) are made for low impact and gentle exercising.

It’s not ideal to go all in like you would do on an exercise bike, for several reasons.

It is, however, a good way to keep your legs moving for a longer time, like if you’re working at a desk for eight hours a day.

Don’t buy a portable foot peddler and expect to do 10-minute workouts every other day that is going to make you sore or build muscle.

But if you work at a desk, and want something that will get your legs moving it’s a great portable option.

To answer the question, it’s going to be similar to a slow walk in most cases. How many calories you burn will also depend on how fast you paddle, and with what resistance.

Don’t trust the calorie counter on the screen though, and I recommend getting a fitness tracker like the Fitbit Fitness Tracker (click to view on Amazon) that can monitor your heart rate.

What is the best portable home exercise machine for a small space?

It depends on what kind of exercises you would like to do.

If you’re more into strength training than cardio, I recommend something like the Total Gym APEX G3 (click to view on Amazon) .

The newer BodyBoss Home Gym 2.0 is also a really popular package that comes with a base, a collapsible workout bar, resistance bands, handles, limb straps, and a door anchor.

With the BodyBoss you can do a full-body workout no matter where you are, all you need is a flat space large enough to put the base on.

You can use it at home, outdoors, in hotels, in the garage, or even inside an RV.

The base of the BodyBoss folds and weighs less than 10 pounds, which makes it a very portable exercise tool.

For cardio, it’s hard to beat the portable exercise bikes that fold, like the Exerpeutic Folding Exercise Bike (click to view on Amazon)

How do you travel with workout supplements and which ones are the best?

How I travel with supplements depends on how long I am going to be gone.

Since I pull my home behind my truck (I live in an RV full time), I always have my protein powder and creatine with me.

If I am going somewhere for a night or two without my travel trailer, I often fill a plastic bag with protein powder, or my BlenderBottle shaker (click to view on Amazon) .

Fill a couple of plastic bags with a scoop each of protein powder, close them up, and store them in your shaker.

This is also a great solution if you bring the shaker to a gym. All you have to do is fill it with water and shake it when you’re ready to drink it.

If you’re going on an airplane, you might run into some questions at the security check if you’re unlucky, but I have been through security checks with a couple of bags in my shaker and haven’t had any issues.

When it comes to what workout supplements are the best, I only recommend protein powder and creatine.

The best tasting protein powder I have found is the Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard (click to view on Amazon) .

Creatine monohydrate doesn’t taste like anything, but the one I usually buy is this one (click to view on Amazon) .

No other supplement has helped me like creatine has and it’s a natural supplement.

It feels like you have superpowers when you can do more reps and sets than before. I recommend reading through Examine.com’s post about creatine.

Are “as seen on TV” exercise products legit?

I can’t comment on all of the “as seen on tv” workout equipment out there, but anything that doesn’t involve you getting involved is most likely not legit.

There are no shortcuts to exercising, and you will feel it when you do it.

You can’t put a vibrating machine on your belly and sit on the couch. The body does not work that way.

There is also no way to burn fat on a specific part of your body. These machines on TV often promise a thinner stomach, legs, or arms.

You can’t control where the body burns fat when you work out.

A big part of weight loss happens in the kitchen. Fewer calories in than out will equal weight loss.

I suggest Googling about the specific product being sold as “as seen on TV” and you should be able to find reviews from regular people.

What are the best workout apps for iPhone/Android?

Which workout app is the best for you depends on what kind of workouts you do. If you run, bike, do yoga, or work out in a gym, there are different apps for each purpose.

Map My Ride ( iOS / Android ) is my favorite biking tracker app. There is also a Map My Hike ( iOS / Android ) app if you prefer walking or hiking.

For yoga, I recommend Daily Yoga ( iOS / Android ). A simple yet intuitive way of helping you go through a yoga workout with ease with a big database of classes, poses, and stretches.

portable-yoga-exercise-equipment-the-camping-nerd

For working out with weights in a gym or at home, I recommend tracking your workouts with Strong ( iOS / Android ).

It’s easy to create your own workouts in the app and track exercises, rest, sets, reps, measurements, and 1RMs.

Strong also has a vast database of exercises, with instructions in image and text form to make sure you perform the exercise with the proper form.

If you’re looking for a workout routine, I recommend checking out Bodybuilding.com’s plans .

You don’t have to follow them to 100 percent, but you can take inspiration from them and set up your workouts in similar ways.

For some, it truly doesn’t get any better than a sweat filled workout after a long and hard day. Most fitness enthusiasts love to workout due to the fact that for that hour or two, the stresses of life just seem to vanish. It’s just you and the weights or that cardio machine.

A gym setting is key to one’s experience. The first gym opened up back in 1852; the Boston Young Men’s Christian Union claims to be the first ever American made gym. We have only seen that trend grow in the years that followed. Nowadays it isn’t hard to find a gym wherever you are. However, there is something to be said on the quality of a gym. A place like Planet Fitness just doesn’t cut it for everyone.

In this article, we take a look around the world featuring some of the best gyms, and we chose diversity as a theme. We highlight the finest gyms in terms of luxury and decor. However, we also include fine Cross-Fit establishments along with must visit gyms for those meat-heads out there. Outdoor gyms will also be featured in the article. We go around the world from The Mecca Gold’s Gym in California all the way to Oxygen Gym in Kuwait.

Enjoy the article fitness junkies, and like always, be sure to share it with a friend. Maybe one day you can cross a couple of these destinations off of your bucket list. Here are 20 of the best gyms from around the world fitness enthusiasts need to travel to. We begin with a unique outdoor gym setting offering a unique experience you won’t forget.

20 Tulum Jungle Gym – Tulum, Mexico

Heading over to Mexico? Are you in need of a serious pump? Well there truly is no better place than the self-proclaimed “World’s Best Beach Gym”, located on the beautiful Tulum beach. It is one of the top tourist attractions with its unique weight display located just in front of the water.

The facility is open on a daily basis from 8 to 5. However, it’s a little pricey. A day pass goes for $25 US. However, given the uniqueness of the gym it is definitely worth the visit and admission fee. You’ll likely be posting a ton of pics to your social media account, whether it be using the cool machines or funky weights and barbells.

19 Muscle Beach Gym – Venice Beach

It would be sad not to include one of the fitness Meccas out there, Muscle Beach Gym to our list. Muscle Beach was founded way back in the 1930s, if you can believe it, and the trend continues to stay hot these days.

If you’re visiting the Los Angeles, California area, it is a must stop for any fitness lover out there. Working out in the outdoor setting is also affordable (at the modest price of $10 per session). You can also choose to watch with various events on display or even some of the top weight lifters in the world getting a good sweat on.

18 Doherty’s Gym – Brunswick, Australia

Australia is another country with a strong community of fitness enthusiasts. Fitness type expos take place in the area yearly - one of the preferred fitness destinations for some of the most popular trainees is the historical Doherty’s Gym. It is a unique and compact setting, making it a must. You get an old school vibe in the facility, and for that reason lots of fitness YouTubers make it a must when they head to Australia.

The gym originated back in 1994 opening up in a small warehouse setting. That has changed these days with various locations. But wait, there’s more, you can train at the gym any time you want; it’s always opened 24 hours/day! Weekly passes are also extremely affordable, starting at just $15.

17 Oxygen Gym – Kuwait

Meat heads be aware, Oxygen Gym isn’t the type of fitness facility in which you can slug around weights and grunt uncontrollably (unlike some of the other hardcore gyms on the list). In truth, the gym setting looks like a fancy hotel from the outside. Fitness enthusiasts have posted videos to YouTube and the gym seriously looks like a paradise.

The lobby itself looks as though it’s the size of the average gym. The amount of space in the facility is truly remarkable. If you like top of the line equipment and your own space; then Oxygen Gym is definitely worth the visit.

16 Barbell Brigade – Los Angeles, California

We have chosen to include a wide variety of gyms on this list. We have lots of hardcore gyms, along with some of the finest and most luxurious establishments. However, we also must give a shout-out to Cross-Fit-like gyms such as Barbell Brigade. In truth, you can easily complete any type of workout at the gym. It is known for lifting big weights on its various squat and deadlift platforms. Once again, with various fitness conventions in the LA area, Barbell Brigade is a preferred destination for lots of popular fitness enthusiasts.

Don’t worry if you’re a dumbbell guy, the fitness location has up to 200 pound dumbbells. It also includes 11 flat and incline bench presses along with various other pieces of equipment. It's a lot more than just a Cross-Fit gym.

15 Green Heart Outdoor Gym – Shaw Park, UK

When it comes to Green Heart Gym, it is the total opposite of New York’s Bev Francis establishment. However, even for hardcore lovers it would be an experience they'd never forget. The layout of the gym looks like a playpen that’s basically made up of fitness equipment. A couple of bros out there might be salivating at that thought.

The goal of the outdoor gym is to basically turn people power into electricity. Yes, it is pretty advanced to say the least. The outdoor gym uses the energy from the machines and converts it into useable electricity. You won’t find a bench press but you’ll leave the setting with an unforgettable experience.

14 Embody Fitness – Dubai

Just hearing about a gym in Dubai, you would figure the fitness facility is likely to be top notch. Heck, the decor in the main lobby looks better suited for a high-end Wall Street office in New York. The establishment promotes luxury items along with World Class results - we're not sure about the results but luxury is a guarantee.

You can find the gym in Dubai’s legendary Lamborghini headquarters. The view alone is worthy of the admission price in truth. It is the largest gym in Dubai and it includes various must-see sections such as a private VIP Olympic quality room along with what they call 'private training studios'.

13 Makeshift Gym – Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro

Heading to Brazil? If so, Copacabana Beach needs to be a destination you make a pit stop at. You’ll find the amazing Makeshift Gym located on the sandy Rio de Janeiro beach.

Like the Tulum beach gym setting earlier in the article, the layout is just so unique. It truly doesn’t get any better than showing off that beach body you worked so hard for while getting your sweat on. With the strong Brazilian sun hitting your skin during the workout, you’re destined for one of the greatest pumps of your fitness career. The unique dumbbells and barbells just add to the experience.

12 Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym – Syosset, New York

So we touched on an outdoor gym and a luxurious gym in the last two entries. If you’re more of a meat and potatoes guy when it comes to fitness, then Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym in New York is the place for you.

It’s a historical gym with lots of bodybuilders and athletes making a pit stop in the past. Hardcore gym lovers would salivate at the old school vibe that this New York gym has to offer. Sweat, growth and groaning is definitely allowed! A gym with such a history and regarded as the top fitness destination on the East Coast, the price tag for a day pass is quite pricey at $25.

11 City Athletic Club – Las Vegas, Nevada

Aside from the "passionate bro", most people who choose Vegas as a vacation destination really aren’t thinking about which gym to hit. Instead, the area is littered with casinos, fine dining and high class night clubs. However, the City Athletic Club might be worth the pit stop. It is one of the most luxurious fitness centers in the world. You’ll feel like you’re in a Vegas club given the decor and lighting inside of the beautiful fitness facility.

The gym isn’t small with 48,000 square feet. It includes various rooms such as private exercise studios, the largest free weight section in Vegas, a double level cardio section and much, much more.

10 Equinox Luxury Fitness Club – Vancouver, British Columbia

For those familiar with the Equinox name in the fitness industry you are likely well aware that the locations tend to be of the high-end nature. Take a quick glance at photos from the Vancouver, Canada setting and you’ll be amazed by its decor and high quality machines and weights.

You can find the gym in various cities across both the US and Canada. If you plan on making a pit stop in beautiful Vancouver, it is definitely worth the workout. Voted the best gym in America by Fitness Magazine , it won’t disappoint when it comes to the luxury factor.

9 DAS GYM – Wien, Austria

DAS Gym in Austria is a heaven for the meat-heads out there. It is regarded as one of the top strength based fitness locations out there. The gym is massive and has even hosted bodybuilding competitions on the upstairs floor in the past. You can also find a full blade of artificial turf on the upstairs.

The gym is a magnificent setting to look at with a lounge area, various bodybuilding posters blown up and just about anything you can need in terms of a workout. This gym is suitable for all training types, whether it be a bodybuilder, Cross Fitter or even an endurance cardio junkie. You have plenty of space to do what you want in this awesome establishment.

8 Metroflex Gym – Arlington, Texas

Like Bev Francis Gym earlier in the article, Metroflex is another highly respected gym visited by various bodybuilders over the last couple of years. The establishment is regarded as the home of various bodybuilding icons such as Ronnie Coleman and Branch Warren. For bodybuilding enthusiasts, that factor alone is worth the trip to this historical gym setting.

With dumbbells ranging from 5 to 250 pounds, you’ll find no shortage of weights, that’s for darn sure. The gym setting is also home to various events such as bodybuilding competitions. For Generation Iron type of trainees; this is another must-visit gym to put on your bucket list.

7 Hydropark Outdoor Gym – Kiev, Ukraine

Old school? Yes. Barbaric? Yes. No nonsense? Yes. Outdoors? Yes. This gym just about checks everything a hardcore gym goer looks for. However, if you are more of a luxury-type trainee that needs fancy equipment and an air conditioned setting - then the Hydropark just isn’t for you. Located in Kiev, the blue rusty equipment makes the setting that much more unique. It looks like an abandoned park except instead of rusty equipment, it's fitness machines, dumbbells and barbells.

Again, we emphasize different in this article and rest assured training in this Ukrainian gym offers the chance at a workout you’ll never forget.

6 Muscleworks Gym – East London

It might be a tight space, however Muscleworks is another fitness Mecca located in the UK area. The classic bodybuilder photos that litter the gym might make you feel like you’ve time-warped back to the 70s or 80s. It’s such a cool and different feel, and the old school equipment is another fantastic part of the gym. Again, fans of luxurious gyms might want to stay away but those that love historical bodybuilding settings, Muscleworks is definitely worth a visit or two.

The gym has an extensive history, opened since 1985. You can even stop at the gift shop with various merchandise available, it’ll make the workout session one you won’t forget.

5 David Barton Gym – Westside, Los Angeles, California

David Barton’s gym in LA is another fitness facility that offers a gym goer one of the most unique experiences. In truth, the gym looks like a club out of the LA area. The decor is definitely one of a kind. The gym is upscale and pretty much tailor-made for anyone that loves luxury-type gym settings.

A 40,000 square feet facility, the gym is loaded with various classes on the daily. It also includes various rooms such as a strength training section, boxing ring, jacuzzis, MMA studio, cardio room, sauna and even a live DJ set. The facility seems like a place you can spend an entire day at, never mind a training session...

4 The Bunker Gym – Sydney, Australia

The Bunker Gym literally feels like you’re training in a bunker. But let’s be honest, it is no grungy bunker. Instead it is one of the coolest and most modern gym settings you’ll ever train at. It seriously looks like a massive basement gym (that we all dream of owning).

The slogan on the website describes the gym best: “descend beneath the city to enter a futuristic world of concrete, neon lights and brushed metal”. I bet we lost a couple of the bros out there who have already booked a ticket to Australia. Make this gym setting a priority if you’re planning a trip to the beautiful Sydney location. We assure you, you won’t regret it!

3 Emporium Gym – Birmingham, UK

You’ve likely heard of this gym in the past. UK is another country loaded with fitness junkies. Some of the best in the industry visit the area on the regular during fitness conventions. One of the stops normally made is at the grand Emporium Gym - one of the legendary fitness facilities in the Birmingham area. The gym has welcomed some of the best of the best in the industry; the likes of Kai Greene, Ulisses World and YouTuber Bradley Martyn have all busted out reps inside of the iconic location.

A simple setting with modern day fitness machines and dumbbells, it’s the perfect gym for a quick workout.

2 Sky Wellness – Beograd, Serbia

Located in Serbia, you would think that you're training in the future - like 50 years from now. The gym decor is just so different, from the fascinating outside structure to uniqueness on the inside. This is a must-see gym based off the decor alone. It’ll definitely give you a workout you’ll never forget.

The gym has just about everything you need from various pieces of cardio equipment to dumbbells and barbells. The gym also features a plethora of modern day machines enough to work any body part. Even if you just want to blow off some steam, a kickboxing section exists with various kicking and punching bags available.

1 Gold’s Gym Venice – Venice, California

Nope, Planet Fitness doesn’t come in at number one. Instead, we have placed 'the Mecca of bodybuilding' Gold’s Gym Venice as THE must-see fitness destination. Unlike the other gyms that sell luxury or a futuristic type of workout experience, the Mecca is worth the trip just based off of history alone.

Opened since 1965, you’re bound to run into a familiar face at the gym location, whether it be a well known bodybuilder or even a famous fitness YouTuber. Bodybuilder or fitness enthusiast, most have already made the trip down to the Mecca. The question remains, have you? If not, pack up that gym bag and get ready!

10 Lightweight, Portable Pieces of Exercise Equipment To Pack With You While Traveling

gym to travel

Whether you're hitting the road in a camping van or escaping to an all-inclusive wellness resort , travel can give you a much-needed reset and break from your busy schedule. But if you're someone who enjoys regular exercise, squeezing in a workout on the road can be tricky. Be it limited access to fancy gym equipment or access to a workout space altogether, and getting those reps in on vacation can be a hassle.

Well, it used to be. Thanks to innovations in portable exercise equipment, you can now bring your workout with you wherever you roam. And no, we're not suggesting you shove your iron dumbbells into your carry-on bag. (Please, don't.) Nowadays, there are plenty of lightweight exercise equipment options that'll help you get moving on your next trip. For glute and leg workouts, a pack of resistance bands and ankle weights should do the trick. For a quick cardio session, add a cordless jump rope , or use Elite Sportz Sliders ($9) to engage your core.

No matter your fitness goals, there's a travel-friendly piece of workout equipment that's eager to tag along. We did the leg work (lol) to find the best portable and lightweight exercise equipment options, which you'll find below.

The best portable exercise equipment for travel

For legs and glutes.

If you’re devoted to maintaining your squat game—even on vacay—get this squat band. It’s designed to let you squat anywhere: In the back of your camper, near the pool, even in the airport (if you so wish) while you’re waiting for your flight. Rather than using just your body weight, the bands add a bit of resistance while ensuring a smoother dip. It’s hands-free, simple, and can be shoved in your beach bag without weighing it down.

Strap on some ankle weights to add a little oomph to your runs, leg workouts, and core training. Each set comes with five removable sand pockets, each weighing 0.97 pounds., and is made of neoprene for a comfy fit. Since it’s heavier than other items on this list, we’d recommend them for checked luggages.

For arms and chest

This easy-to-use resistance band set will have your upper body challenged on your next vacay. What’s included? Five workout bands, non-slip handles, a door anchor, and ankle straps. Anchor one of the workout bands to the door for chest presses or hook up a non-slip handle for some bicep action. It also comes with carabiners, which you can connect to cable equipment if you’ll be staying at a hotel or Airbnb with a fitness center. The whole set weighs only 2.4 pounds, so if you’re checking a bag, no worrying about going over the weight limit.

Slide on these chic Bala Bangles over your wrists to add some weight to your next workout. Available in1- and 2-pounds, they’re a fun way to level up an arm workout on the go. Strap ’em on while you go for a hike, or bring them to a beach-side cardio session.

For core and abs

If you have extra space in your checked luggage or room to carry on another item, consider bringing this all-purpose yoga mat. Made of high-density, anti-tear foam, this mat is ideal for stretching, core, and yoga workouts. It weighs only 1.8 pounds and comes with a carrying strap for easy transport. Open up your YouTube workout video, roll out your mat, and get grooving.

Put your core to the test with these gliding discs, which can be slid into your bag in between your socks and your undies. The discs are double sided, so they can be used on all types of surfaces and make for a great companion during knee tucks or mountain climbers. Weighing only 0.35 pounds, they’re lightweight and small enough to fit in a personal bag or carry-on luggage.

Jumping rope is one easy way to get your heart rate up, and this one is cordless. Yes, cordless! So now worrying about it getting tangled up in your suitcase. Instead, it can rotate 360 degrees to mimic a real jump rope, minus the fear of tripping you up or hitting furniture or walls. The handles are made of odor- and sweat-resistant foam, so you don’t have to worry about throwing them in your suitcase afterwards. Plus, they weigh less than a pound.

If night-time jogs or bike rides are going to be on the itinerary, bring these battery-powered safety lights with you. Weighing at less than an ounce each, they’re totally packable in a pinch. Each light has three brightness modes and three strobe modes to keep you safe when the sun goes down, lasting for 100 hours each.

For yoga and pilates

These cute resistance bands are here to turn the heat up on your pilates session. The loop design fits comfortably around your legs, adding resistance when you stretch, scissor-kick, and squat. Each pack includes a light and medium resistance band, so you can switch things up when you want to turn up (or down) the burn.

While it may be a bit chunky to shove into your carry-on tote or duffel, the lightweight design (4.6 oz.) of this yoga block is worth packing along. It’s constructed of non-slip EVA foam that makes modifying your yoga poses and adding extra support a breeze. You can prop, bolster, grip, and balance on them, transforming your practice wherever you may perform it.

Life is a special gift. Within that there’s no better gift than good health; physical and mental.

But we love to travel – and when you’re on the move, it can be hard to prioritise health. When we discovered fitness resorts and wellness programmes, it completely changed the game.

Finding a Fitness Retreat for You

Top fitness retreats in the world, best fitness resorts in the outdoors, best surf retreats, meditation and yoga retreats, best wellness retreats, best fitness retreat for you bad folks, best affordable fitness retreats, best luxurious fitness retreats, faqs about the best fitness retreats, final thoughts on the best fitness retreats in the world.

The days of MTV girls’ gone wild beach resorts are behind us. Wellness travel is now one of the fastest-growing sectors in tourism because people are tired of needing a vacation from their vacation.

People are looking to detox on holiday, not to destroy their livers in the process. People are looking for ways to get away from the stress, not deplete their adrenals faster than their bank account.

Don’t get me wrong: there are times and places for partying and letting loose (this is a backpacker blog, after all), but there is also a time and place for staying fit on the road and fitness classes that are actually restorative and rejuvenating.

Although there are some expensive retreats out there, I’ve hand-picked the getaways and fitness resorts that are worth your money. I’ve also included many affordable getaways so even we backpackers can take a break from the crazy hostel life once and a while.

surfing fitness retreats

As someone who personally likes to work out hard, hit the gym, and go on adventures, I also appreciate   working inwards through yoga and meditation, digital detoxes, and nature immersion. I always ensure my backpack is equipped with light and reliable travel workout gear to stay fit on the roads.

You can trust that I’ve covered a solid variety of wellness and fitness getaways that encompass my passion for health and travel.

I’d like to point out that wellness and fitness are not interchangeable, and sometimes athletes sacrifice health and longevity to achieve maximal physical fitness and performance, but the two can go hand in hand. Many of the fitness and wellness retreats I cover below incorporate healthy food, restorative rest, digital detoxes, mobility, and recovery in balance with intensive workouts and adventures.

Some of the best fitness retreats in the world include surf and yoga retreats, outdoor escapes, adventurous locations, luxurious getaways, and more. As mentioned, I’ve included a few amazing surf and fitness camps for those of us on a budget.

I am going to cover a few fitness retreats that focus on your physical fitness as well as particular skill sets like martial arts and CrossFit. Some will focus more on group settings, while others on silent meditation.

Whatever your health goals are, it’s likely there’s a wellness holiday out there for you. Let’s dig in, shall we?

Where:  Sayulita, Mexico (+ Costa Rica and Portugal destinations)

Their mantra is “find your balance” and that’s exactly what you’ll find. Find your balance on the board, in the studio, and life. They help you go deep into the movement. Point Break is unique as they blend the art of ballet with the athleticism of surfing. While a lot of the best fitness resorts include yoga classes, this section focuses on ashrams, all-inclusive yoga retreats, and meditation retreats, specifically. I have listed some of the most popular yoga retreats, but generally included many of the best retreats and shalas offered in India and across the world.

I have excluded obscenely priced retreats from this section. Please see my luxurious fitness retreat section below for those. Most of these the best yoga retreats in the world reside in yoga’s birthplace of India, though not all, and I added a couple of different retreats elsewhere.

Keep in mind, you can show up to travel India or Asia and find a retreat that speaks to you, but if you want to book everything ahead of time, then these suggestions are a great place to start.

Young Girl Yoga, Nusa Lembongan

17. Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Light of BKS Iyengar

Where: Puna, India

This might be one of the most popular yoga retreats in the world, as it is the heart and soul of Iyengar Yoga. There is a great significance behind the unique design of RIMYI. The three floors represent the body, mind, and soul. Its height is 71 feet and has 8 columns which represent the eight limbs of ashtanga yoga i.e.yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, Dharana, dhyana and samadhi. The institute conducts regular classes for beginners, intermediate, and advanced yogis.

18. Samma Karuna

Where: Koh Phangan, Thailand

Looking for a meditation trip? One of the best yoga retreats in the world? A place to meet like-minded people? Samma Karuna is located amongst the palm trees, beautiful beaches, and jungle landscapes of Koh Phangan, and this place is more like a community than a retreat.

They offer various packages, teacher training courses, a unique 1-month Awakening and Healing program, and shorter stays too. My friend has raved about how incredible this yoga getaway is.

Don’t be alarmed that Koh Phangan is the infamous Full Moon Party island because there are many lowkey spots on the island as well, and I’ve heard the yoga on Koh Phangan is overall incredible at many studios and retreat centers.

19. Mysore Mandala

Where: Mysore, India (Ashtanga’s birthplace)

If you are looking for an Ashtanga-style yoga and meditation retreat in India , this is one of the best Yoga retreats in India. Mysore Mandala Yoga Shala is a Yoga and Cultural Centre located in charming Heritage House with a cafe supplied by the owners’ organic farm on-site.

It’s closer to a western-style studio than traditional ashram but remains authentic. They mainly teach Ashtanga, Mysore Style, but also offer Hatha, shatkriya (cleansing), back bending, and pranayama as well as instruction in Sanskrit, in the yoga sutras, and Ayurveda, the Vedic medical system. The personal training sessions are highly regarded here.

20. Sagrada Wellness Retreat

Where: Santa Margarita, California

Right in my backyard of California’s Central Coast, The Sagrada Wellness retreat is nestled amongst the quiet hilltops of Santa Margarita, California. I love that there is no internet, and you can fully disconnect from technology to practice yoga, eat farm-to-table organic foods, meditate, journal, and spa in peace.

As someone who lives around here, it’s hard not to eat and feel well among the California hilltops!  Bonus points for their 100% solar-powered home, saltwater pool, Jacuzzi, and nearby hiking spots. They also run “Singlehood Retreat” making them one of the best spiritual retreats for singles. Considering the location, there are wine and yoga retreats, too because of wine not?

21. Ana Maya Resort

Where: Montezuma, Costa Rica

More than just a yoga retreat, Ana Maya is a paradise nestled in the Costa Rican jungle overlooking the ocean. They do all-inclusive yoga retreats ranging from a few days to weeks. You’ll get nothing less than all organic, healthy meals – gourmet style, yoga packages, spa services, and specialized workshops.

Ana Maya Resort works with the neighbouring Rancho Delicioso to do yoga packages with their permaculture courses, scuba and surf camps, aerial silk, and archery. Rancho Delicioso is just a few miles away. It’s more affordable but not as luxurious as Ana Maya, and so many guests do one week at Anamaya and one at Rancho Delicioso.

22. Yoga Goa Purple Valley

With access to the world’s best Ashtanga teachers (John Scott, Petri Raisanen, Alexander Medin), Goa’s Purple Valley one of the best yoga retreats in the world to practice Mysore-style yogic living.

The yoga retreat is spread over two Portuguese-style houses and landscaped gardens with a tropical forest feel. Two international and one Ayurvedic chef prepare delicious, healthy meals.

You may also meet with Ayurvedic doctors and massage therapists. We consider this one of the best spiritual retreats in India for singles, though couples you are welcome too.

23. Sleep YourSelf Awake Retreat

When: Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Located between the jungle and a private beach, this is one of the best meditation and yoga retreats in the world. I love their focus on yoga nidra sessions to work through the stages of sleep and get restorative sleep.

Yoga Nidra brings the nervous system into a coherent state, resting in a place where healing can occur on all levels. You can also expect body mapping and dream mapping workshops, and the option to participate in a traditional  temazcal  (Mayan sweat lodge) ceremony.

24. Aro Ha in the Southern Alps of New Zealand

Where: Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand

Aro Ha is a multi-award-winning retreat where wellness traditions meet luxury. Each retreat aims to achieve that by focusing on the BREATH acronym: Being, Relating, Eating, Activity, Toxicity, and Healing.

Salute the rising sun with vinyasa yoga, be immersed in nature, and use a variety of practices to elevate your body and mind. The accommodation features a range of eco suites in a home with a shared foyer with communal space to sit and share tea. From the hydrotherapy spas set into the mountainous earth to the yoga studio with panoramic views of Lake Wakatipu, you’ll find peace everywhere you turn.

The all-inclusive program serves up vegetarian, paleo-friendly, gluten-free, and dairy-free cuisine to help reset your eating habits; and fitness classes, spa therapy, and mindfulness practices take care of the rest of the body and mind. This will translate nicely into all your mindful training in the gym, on the mat and elsewhere.

Aro Ha is a self-sustaining retreat that merges ancient traditions with modern technology. From the organic produce grown onsite and stored in ambient, earth-cooled cellars, to our state-of-the-art solar and hydro energy system, each wellness journey leaves no trace.

25. Akasha Wellness Retreat

Akasha Wellness Retreat combines some of the best hiking in the world with a yoga retreat. It is in a quaint village in the mountains of Transylvania close to the city of Brasov. It is the perfect wellness retreat getaway from Western Europe, as it’s – as they say – “remote and rural on purpose.” You’ll practice yoga and hike amongst pure mountain air and nature, and eat some of the best homemade food.

You’ll have unlimited access to Swedish & infrared sauna, and outdoor jacuzzi hot tub, both with views of the mountains. Body therapies, energy healing, and massages can be booked on arrival.

26. Seven Senses

Where:  Todos Santos, Mexico

Throughout this week-long retreat, holistic naturopath, Dr. Erica Matluck and sound practitioner, Paul Kuhn will lead you through a series of exercises, ranging from breathwork and sound therapy to yoga and empowering purpose-driven workshops, to optimize your seven chakra centers.

At the end of this transformative journey, you will have the access to and understanding of powerful physical and metaphysical tools to unblock, strategize and manifest boundless success and happiness back at home.

BAD, essentially meaning good, but with a little spice and an element of being unconventional and eccentric.” They do adhere to some traditional yoga but are not afraid to throw on some bumping music and dance.

The Best Travel Workouts You Can Do With No Equipment

Image may contain Human Person Sport Sports Fitness Exercise Working Out Stretch and Yoga

When it comes to reaching your fitness goals, consistency is key . And while travel workouts are obviously great if you can fit them in, don't stress about taking a few days off— skipping your workout for a few days isn't going to set back your progress.

But there are so many benefits to breaking a sweat that are worth setting aside some time to train while traveling, including more energy and improved mood. That's why we rounded up some of our top equipment-free , minimal-space travel workouts to help you make it happen no matter where you are. Plus, squeezing in a quick workout or two during your trip can make it easier to get back in the swing of things after you've unpacked your suitcases.

So whether you're on the road for work, fun, or visiting family, here are eight travel-friendly workouts to try.

Image may contain Text Brochure Paper Advertisement Flyer and Poster

Repeat 3x: • 10 Plank Ups • 10 Lateral Plank Walks • 10 Burpees With Push-Ups • 10 Planks With Shoulder Taps • 10 Diamond Push-Ups • 10 Mountain Climber Twists

Developed by FitFusion trainer Kenta Seki , this workout might make it hard to blow dry your hair tomorrow. It will take about 10 minutes to complete—get all of the workout details here .

Image may contain Text Advertisement Poster Flyer Paper and Brochure

Do 12 to 15 reps per side for each exercise.

Repeat 4x: • Side-Step Squats • Single-Leg Glute Bridges • Curtsy Lunges With Side Kick Rest — 90 seconds

No squats required for this workout from Jill Penfold , LA-based personal trainer and creator of the 12-week LA Bride Body program . Get the workout details here .

If you're a beginner, do 30 seconds of work, 30 seconds rest per move. Intermediate: 40 seconds work, 20 seconds rest Advanced: 50 seconds work, 10 seconds rest

Repeat 2x: • Mock Jumping Rope • Burpee With Push-Up • Squat Jump • Plank Taps • Jumping Lunge

Get up on the right side of the bed (even if it's not your bed) with this 10-minute burner from Jill Penfold , LA-based personal trainer and creator of the 12-week LA Bride Body program . Get the workout details here .

Do each move for 2 minutes, rest for 30 seconds between moves: • Bodyweight Squats • Push-Ups • Plank With T-Rotation (switch sides after 1 minute) • Alternating Standing Oblique Crunches

The perfect routine if you've only got 10 minutes to spare (and no extra time to get ready again afterward). It was developed for SELF by Jessica Bolbach, owner of NYC fitness studio KORE . Get the workout details here .

Repeat 2x: • Plié Squat pulses With One Foot Raised — 30 seconds per side • Alternating Side Lunges — 30 seconds per side • Skater Hops — 15 seconds • Curtsy Kicks — 30 seconds per side • Goblet Squats — 30 seconds • Jumping Jacks — 15 seconds • Pilates Scissors — 30 seconds • Clamshells — 30 seconds per side

This workout from exercise physiologist Michelle Lovitt , M.A., will set your inner thighs on fire. Keep in mind that spot training is a fitness myth. If your goal is muscle definition or fat loss in a particular area, you'll need to do a combination of strength training (both of that specific muscle group and everywhere else), reducing overall body fat, and eating a diet that contributes to body fat loss and muscle-building. With that disclaimer, get the full workout details here .

We train with purpose and intention so you can live a life free of limitations. In class, you do movements like barbell squats, kettlebell swings, and body weight movements with traditional cardio exercises. All led by a professional coach.

Each class is led by professional coaches. We always start together with a warm-up designed to activate the muscles being used in the workout. The coach will brief the group on the workout, the movements, and the proper form. During the workout, the coach will be guiding and providing instruction. At the end of class, we will cool down together to accelerate recovery and reduce potential injury.

Strong as a Mother was designed and created out of necessity by our owner, Mallory.  Mallory after giving birth to her first son observed a large gap in the fitness space around support for mothers, pelvic floor health, and lack of information around the slew of benefits (both physical and mental) of safe exercise before, during and after pregnancy.  Now a pre and postpartum certified fitness specialist, Mallory built the small group Strong as a Mother programs, by moms for moms.  Get the support you need in all aspects of the motherhood journey.

Active Life certified professional, Robert Hull, works with you to get you out of pain.  Stop being held back by pain limitations and start living pain free.  Have you recently been released from physical therapy & are now unsure or hesitant about returning to your daily interests? Are you tired of chronic pain, or have movement limitations that hold you back? Do you want a plan that takes all of your lifestyle factors into consideration-sleep, diet, stress, support system, work schedule, etc.  Robert currently serves clients who: Want to return to hiking on vacation, but are afraid after a total hip replacement. Have dealt with on and off back pain for 10 years, avoid picking up heavy objects off the ground, and have discomfort when they run. Tried things in the past like CrossFit, Orangetheory, a regular gym, and nothing quite seems like it was what they really want/or has not provided the results they were looking for.

Elevete’s own professional coach, Brette Peeples, brings years of industry knowledge, experience and scientific insights to help women who are experiencing the effects of perimenopause and menopause symptoms.  Are you tired of dieting?  Are you not seeing progress where you did in the past?  Feeling the hormonal imbalance?  This tailored fitness and nutrition program is designed to help you start working with your body instead of against it and start feeling like yourself again. Let’s get to work!

5 Ways to Improve Your Fitness on Vacation

Fitness experts share their tips for managing your workout routine while traveling.

A man wearing a black and white tank top is seen from behind lifting resistance bands in the air.

By Anna Maltby

The next time you’re trying to fit in a workout on a trip, it might be comforting to know that even fitness experts don’t necessarily recommend a “no excuses” attitude.

Cedric Bryant, the president and chief executive of the American Council on Exercise, said you should prioritize balance and your well-being when deciding whether — or how much — to exercise on vacation. “The key is to be smart enough to listen to your body and your mind, and do what feels right for you,” he said.

Still, making a little time to move has clear benefits: Physical activity helps reduce stress and lower cortisol, which can enhance how relaxed you feel, Dr. Bryant said. Plus, staying active can help regulate your sleep, which could make it easier for you to adjust to a new time zone.

Here are a few ideas from fitness trainers and coaches for how to approach your exercise routine while traveling.

Use exercise to explore the area

Most people walk a lot more on vacation than at home without realizing it, said D’Annette Stephens, a personal trainer and the fitness programs coordinator at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. Walking, running and biking are all excellent ways to experience a new place — and get some cardiovascular exercise while you’re at it. Walking just 4,000 steps per day can reduce the risk of dying from any cause, according to one study from last year.

A hotel, resort or studio in another city can be a good place to try a new fitness class, said Jamie Carbaugh, a weight-inclusive online personal trainer: “It’s a great chance to explore something outside your comfort zone without the worry that your co-worker might show up right next to you,” she said.

If you’re visiting somewhere with outdoor recreation access, activities like hiking or kayaking can also be great options. Paul Valukas, a strength and conditioning coach in Madison, Wis., likes to mountain bike on trips to Colorado with his wife. That way, they can get outside while challenging themselves physically.

“I’m not going to go sit in a squat rack in Crested Butte,” he said.

Pack light equipment — if you’ll use it

Resistance bands are easy to pack and can be used for a variety of strength training exercises, Dr. Bryant said. A looped band can go just above your knees for hip strengthening exercises like clamshells and monster walks, and you can use a longer band with handles for overhead presses and rows, Ms. Stephens said. Resistance training can improve both muscle strength and cardiovascular health .

Then again, if you can’t realistically see yourself doing a banded workout in your hotel room or on the beach, don’t bother packing them, Mr. Valukas said. Bring what you’ll actually use.

In case you need extra motivation: Strength training can help reduce the aches and pains of travel, Ms. Stephens said, whether from walking, sitting on airplanes or sleeping on hotel mattresses.

Embrace bite-size routines

If sightseeing or that juicy airport paperback is demanding most of your time, don’t stress about finding the hours for a long, involved workout. Focus on what you can get done in a few minutes — ideally in the morning, before the fun of the day pulls you away, Ms. Carbaugh said. Numerous studies suggest that even short bursts of exercise offer real health benefits .

A short walk or dynamic stretching can help you warm up quickly. Then, try a few sets of simple body weight exercises. Ms. Carbaugh suggested 10 to 15 reps of things like squats with heel raises, push-ups with hands on a park bench (or sturdy table) and a dynamic stretch like downward dog with alternating bent knees. Cool down with some chest openers and lower-body stretches.

For something higher intensity that you can easily do in a hotel room, Mr. Valukas said to consider an AMRAP workout, short for “as many rounds as possible.” Set a timer for 15 or 20 minutes and cycle through four reverse lunges on each leg and six dead bugs on each side as many times as you can before the timer goes off.

Focus on recovery and supplemental work

If you often think about stretching or mobility work but never actually make time to do it, vacation can be a great opportunity to practice — especially if you can pack a small massage ball or borrow a foam roller, Ms. Stephens said.

The same applies to lower-intensity — but still challenging — workouts like Pilates and yoga , or even just squeezing in some core exercises . These are the things people tend to skip at home, Ms. Stephens said, but they’re a great way to keep your body feeling good.

Or … give yourself permission to rest

Rest and recovery are an important part of a well-rounded exercise regimen, Mr. Valukas said. “We don’t get stronger when we’re lifting; we get stronger while we’re recovering,” he said. “Even athletes have breaks built into their year.”

If you’re anxious about losing the fitness progress you’ve made by taking time off, don’t be, Dr. Bryant said. While the effects of a rest from exercise varies based on your age, activity level and overall health, research suggests that it takes longer than a week or two off to see a significant impact on cardiovascular health and muscle strength . “For a lot of people, that time off can be just what the body needed,” Dr. Bryant said.

White Plains friar used donations to fake charity on gym membership, plastic surgery: Feds

Portrait of Asher Stockler

A Catholic friar with a White Plains-based order raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for a fake charitable enterprise and spent much of the money on personal expenses, such as luxury gym memberships, trips to the Hamptons, plastic surgery and meals at high-end restaurants, the U.S. Department of Justice alleged in a newly unsealed criminal complaint Monday.

Pawel Bielecki, 48, is a friar with the Province of St. Mary of the Capuchin Order, which is headquartered in White Plains. The friars take a vow of poverty and are severely limited in the amount of personal assets they are allowed to maintain. But according to the Department of Justice, Bielecki concocted a wide-ranging scheme to raise money for medical services in Beirut, Lebanon, and withdrew the funds for his personal use.

Bielecki solicited and received hundreds of thousands of dollars from crowdfunding websites, radio appearances and other public solicitations, the Department of Justice's complaint alleged. The purported reason for the fundraising was to support medical clinics Bielecki runs in Beirut ‒ for the purchase of medicine, medical equipment, baby incubators, food and an ambulance.

However, Bielecki's clinics "do not exist," said Sean Smyth, a special agent with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan.

"I believe that Bielecki was present in New York on specific dates when he claimed, in his radio appearances and in other electronic communications, to be in Lebanon on behalf of his purported medical clinics," Smyth wrote.

According to the complaint, Bielecki raised at least $78,000 through various crowdfunding websites and more than $230,000 through direct contributions.

Since 2017, he had withdrawn $50,000 in cash and used more than $600,000 from his bank account to pay down personal expenses on his credits cards, the complaint alleges.

Some of these expenses included, according to the complaint, a $334-per-month gym membership fee, trips to the Hamptons and meals at high-end restaurants.

On one occasion in January 2022, the complaint says, Bielecki received $10,000 from a Pennsylvania woman, who believed the money was going to pay for expenses associated with running an ambulance.

The woman thanked him for ensuring that "the many prayers for an ambulance were answered."

Around two weeks later, Bielecki attended a "Body Contouring Examination" at a liposuction clinic, the complaint alleges, and scheduled a $15,000 procedure.

Smyth also says that Bielecki adopted multiple false aliases and made up information about his background, including claims that he was a researcher for the United Nations and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, a component of the U.S. Department of Defense.

Bielecki could not be reached for comment. He was charged with wire fraud and mail fraud and is currently being held at a federal detention facility in Brooklyn.

The Capuchin Franciscans of the Province of St. Mary strive to live the Gospel in the spirt of St. Francis of Assisi, according to their website. "Through their dedication to serving those in need, through their living simply as a fraternity of brothers and through their lives of prayer they seek to bring about the Kingdom of God here on earth," it says.

The Friars of the Province of St. Mary serve in parishes and other ministerial sites across New York state and New England.

How to get rid of a UTI: your expert guide to dealing with the nasty infections

Yes, they're awful. Yes, you can get to work on clearing them up, stat

how to get rid of a uti

You know the root of the issue instinctively – it’s a UTI . As you know, urinary tract infections are seriously common. Over half of women will get deal with one at least once in their lives. At least. It's deeply likely that you've been there yourself, there, desperately asking Dr Google 'how to get rid of a UTI immediately?' as the familiar pain sets in.

If you’re in this boat, we feel for you. It’s important to remember that UTIs are normal and easily resolvable, particularly with medical assistance. Just be sure not to leave your symptoms untreated, as this can lead to more severe issues.

As Mohammed Belal, Consultant Urological Surgeon, University Hospitals Birmingham, tells Women’s Health : 'If a UTI is left untreated the bladder infection may escalate to a kidney infection. This can cause permanent damage and lead to serious complications like sepsis.'

There’s also a risk of developing chronic UTIs , which can be difficult to treat, and a nightmare to live with.

So, what is a UTI?

You know how they feel, but what about the actual biology of these nasty issues? A UTI is an infection of any part of the urinary system, or urinary tract. This includes urethra, bladder or kidneys.

When bacteria enters the urethra a UTI can occur, resulting in painful, cloudy or bloody urination, pelvic pain and more frequent urination.

'Once inside the urethra, these bacteria colonise and establish themselves, and then they can ascend up to the bladder, and then they can go up to the kidney [if left untreated],' Dr Ranee Thakar , a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist and president of the Royal College of Obstetrician and Gynaecology, tells WH.

UTIs are common after sexual intercourse – which is why it’s so important to pee after sex – after going to the toilet (because bacteria from your back passage can infect your urinary tract, depending on how you wipe – remember, always go front to back!), if you’ve had a catheter or kidney stones , if you’re immune system is weakened or you’re pregnant, and if you haven’t been drinking enough fluids.

What causes a UTI in females?

Women are much more prone to contracting UTIs than men, and this is largely down to our anatomy. UTIs, explains Dr Thakar, often start in the urethra, which is the tube through which urine leaves the body. 'The urethra is quite short in females,' she says. 'So, because there is less distance for the bacteria to travel into the bladder and the urinary tract, women are more likely to get UTIs.'

Mr Belal adds that 'certain contraceptive methods, like diaphragms or spermicides, can increase the risk,' as can hormonal changes relating to menopause.

Will a UTI go away on its own?

There are two types of UTIs: complicated and uncomplicated. 'An uncomplicated UTI is usually quite easy to resolve with antibiotics, or sometimes it can clear on its own,' says Dr Thakar. 'Occasionally, if a person drinks a lot of fluids, particularly water, they can clear on their own.' (Although, it’s important to note, antibiotics are the most effective treatment).

Complicated UTIs occur when a person has 'additional challenges to the urinary system,' such as strictures (scars that narrow the urethra, making it more difficult for urine to pass) or kidney stones.

'When urine cannot come out, it tends to accumulate, and that forms an area where the bacteria can grow very easily, just like in stagnated water,' says Dr Thakar. Other conditions such as kidney issues, immune problems like diabetes or cancer, or catheters – anything which can make a UTI worse, or more likely – can cause complicated UTIs.

In these instances, says Dr Thakar, antibiotics will likely be needed, though there is a risk of building up a resistance to them.

How long does a UTI last?

Thankfully, UTIs don’t last too long, assuming you treat them as quickly as possible. Typically, says Mr Belal, a UTI resolves within a week, but it may take several weeks for the symptoms to improve.

'With antibiotics, symptoms usually improve within a few days,' he adds. 'It’s crucial to finish the entire course of medication to ensure the infection is completely gone.'

How to get rid of a UTI, fast

Unfortunately, there’s no quick fix for UTIs, other than drinking lots of water and taking antibiotics as prescribed. However, there are some home remedies which can help to reduce symptoms, as well as helping to prevent UTIs more generally, when done consistently.

'Take probiotics,' says Mr Belal. 'These can support a healthy balance of bacteria.' Also, he adds, try to avoid irritants, like caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods and artificial sweeteners.

The Best Labor Day Mattress Sales

Portrait of Amelia Jerden

Summer is rapidly coming to a close, and with the end of the season comes yet another big mattress sales holiday: Labor Day. Though we’re still a couple weeks away from the long weekend, many sales have already begun. Below, I’ve rounded up a few of the best early discounts on some of our favorite mattresses , but if you can wait just a bit longer to make your purchase, I’d recommend checking back as we get closer to Labor Day itself — lots of brands tend to sweeten the deal right before the long weekend, and I’ll be updating this post all the way through.

Amerisleep sells three fairly standard mattresses, but what does set them apart a bit is the company’s Bio-Pur foam , a memory-foam alternative made from plant-based materials and significantly less petrochemicals than true polyurethane foam. The brand says it also is bouncier and more breathable than traditional memory foam. For Labor Day, take up to $500 off any mattress with code LD500. You can also get 20 percent off pillows, toppers, and sheets with the code LD20.

Amerisleep AS2

Get up to 20 percent off Avocado’s line of mattresses made with natural and nontoxic materials, no code needed. Avocado is also offering up to 50 percent off bedding and 10 percent off furniture and pillows — it’s not a huge discount, but that’s about as good as it ever gets at Avocado, which does make some of my favorite latex pillows .

Avocado Green Mattress

Like Avocado, Awara makes its mattresses with natural materials. It doesn’t have quite as many models as Avocado, but all three of Awara’s beds are good, affordable latex-hybrid options. For Labor Day, the brand is offering up to 50 percent off mattresses.

Awara Natural Luxury
Hybrid Mattress

Bear is offering 35 percent off sitewide with the code STRAT35. Each mattress purchase includes a free bedding bundle that contains two pillows, a sheet set, and a mattress protector. Its mattresses range from the ultrabasic Bear Original to the luxe Bear Elite Hybrid, but all include the option of adding a cover made from Celliant performance fabric, which is intended to promote muscle recovery.

Bear Original Mattress

Bedgear sells a few different mattresses, including a modular one that you can customize to your preferences by swapping out comfort layers. You can also customize each side of the bed to have a different firmness level — ideal for those who have a partner with opposite preferences. The brand is offering up to $500 off mattresses, as well as some buy-one-get-one 50 percent off deals on pillows and sheets.

Bedgear S Performance Mattress

Use the code STRAT25 for 25 percent off sitewide at Birch. Plus with each mattress purchase, you’ll get two free Eco-Rest pillows — plush down-alternatives filled with recycled PET (a.k.a. plastic bottles). Birch offers two mattresses, the Birch Natural and a Luxe version, as well as a child’s mattress. Former Strategist editor Maxine Builder described the Birch Natural as supportive yet plush: “A dream for a stomach sleeper like me, who tosses and turns throughout the night.”

Birch Natural Mattress

Brentwood Home

Brentwood Home manufactures the majority of its products in California with a bent toward natural materials and ecofriendly processes. For Labor Day, the brand is offering 10 percent off mattresses, but there are deeper discounts on other products, including 60 percent off adjustable bed bases, 50 percent off crib mattresses, and 50 percent off throw blankets.

Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex Mattress

Brooklyn Bedding

This Arizona-based mattress-maker is offering 25 percent off sitewide with code STRAT25. In addition to nice hybrid beds like the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe and the Signature Hybrid, Brooklyn Bedding also makes the ultrafirm Plank, which is one of our favorite firm mattresses , and the Titan Plus, which offers additional support for heavier folks.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Mattress

Casper is offering 30 percent off all mattresses, so it’s a good time to buy a bed from its new lineup of mattresses that launched earlier this year. Senior editor Kiki Aranita is a big fan of the brand’s flagship model, the Casper One, and says it has an ideal middle-of-the-road firmness.

Casper One Mattress

DreamCloud makes three memory-foam mattresses — the Original, the Premier, and the Premier Rest — as well as a hybrid version of each. For Labor Day, the brand is taking up to 55 percent off all mattresses.

DreamCloud Mattress

If you’re shopping for a latex pillow, mattress, or mattress topper, Eco Terra is a good brand to check out. It’s taking $400 off its latex mattresses and up to 40 percent off toppers for Labor Day.

Eco Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress

For Labor Day, Emma is running its usual deal of taking up to half off mattresses.

Emma Original Mattress

Helix is offering up to 27 percent off sitewide with the code STRAT27 and throwing in two free pillows with any mattress purchase. Helix mattresses are divided into three lines — Core, Luxe, and Elite — which each contain six mattresses ranging from ultrasoft to ultrafirm. The Core mattresses are the cheapest and most minimal; the Elite are the most expensive and extravagant (seriously, they are some of the most luxurious mattresses I’ve seen).

Helix Midnight Mattress

Latex for Less

This purveyor of all things latex is offering up to $600 off mattresses, as well as up to 40 percent off latex toppers.

Latex for Less Natural Latex Mattress: 2-Sided (Medium and Firm)

Layla is offering up to $200 off mattresses and throwing in two free pillows with each mattress purchase. Both of the brand’s mattresses are twofers because they are flippable with a soft and a firm side. Strategist writer Tembe Denton-Hurst tested the Layla Hybrid and says that both sides were supportive, but she appreciated the option to flip the mattress because she ultimately preferred the softer side.

Layla Memory Foam Mattress

Leesa is taking 25 percent off select mattresses, bedding, and bed bases, as well as 15 percent off kids’ mattresses. Leesa sells a wide selection of mattresses, including our favorite all-foam mattress, the Leesa Original. Each mattress purchase will also get you two free pillows.

Leesa Original Mattress

The Nectar Original is one of the most popular memory-foam mattresses on the market — it’s currently our top pick for memory foam . Nectar is offering up to 40 percent off the Nectar Original and the rest of its mattresses.

Nectar Memory-Foam Mattress

Take 35 percent off sitewide at Nolah, and select mattresses will also come with two free pillows. Nolah sells a good variety of mattresses at different price points, including hybrids, all-foam mattresses, and even a natural latex hybrid option.

Nolah Original 10-Inch Mattress

The maker of our favorite latex mattress, PlushBeds, is taking up to 50 percent off all mattresses and throwing in a free bedding bundle with every mattress purchase, so you’ll also get two pillows, a sheet set, and a mattress protector.

PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Hybrid Latex Mattress

Purple — the brand known for its squishy, flexible purple grid layer — has several mattresses on sale. That biggest discount is on the Rejuvenate line of mattresses (which is quite expensive), but the brand is also offering up to $200 off the (more modestly priced) original Purple mattress.

Purple Mattress

Saatva makes our favorite mattress overall , the Saatva Classic, and right now the brand is offering up to $600 off mattress purchases. You can also save $100 on adjustable bases and frames when purchased with a mattress. I’ve tested several Saatva mattresses and find them to be really high quality, and the company provides free white-glove delivery, meaning it will deliver your new mattress, set it up in your room of choice, and take away your old mattress, too.

Saatva Classic Mattress

Longtime mattress-maker Sealy is taking up to $300 off mattresses in its Posturepedic Plus collection and will include a free bundle of pillows, sheets, and a mattress protector with your purchase. Take $450 off the Posturepedic Hybrid with the code PPHYBRID, bringing it down to $799 for a queen size. Or take $200 off the Posturepedic Spring with code PPSPRING, bringing it down to $599 for a queen size. Sealy is also offering up to 35 percent off its budget-friendly Cocoon by Sealy mattresses.

Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid Mattress

Already a budget-friendly brand, Siena is offering a discount of up to 50 percent off its Siena Memory Foam, Essential Memory Foam, and Premier Hybrid mattresses. That last one is the most expensive, but it’s still under $1,000 at full price for a queen.

Siena Essential Memory Foam Mattress

Stearns & Foster

Take $300 off Stearns & Foster’s Studio and Estate models, $600 off the Lux Estate and Lux Hybrid, and $700 off the Reserve. I’ve tested a Lux Estate model and can confirm it is quite luxe — like what you’d expect to sleep on in a high-end hotel.

Stearns & Foster The Estate Collection

Tempur-Pedic

I’m a big fan of Tempur-Pedic’s mattresses — they offer the classic “hugging” feel of memory foam in a way many other beds can’t compete with. But they are expensive, so sales are always welcome. Use the code CLOUD30 for 30 percent off the affordable, bed-in-a-box Tempur-Cloud mattress. Other models are discounted by up to $500 off, no code needed. My favorite mattress topper is also 40 percent off with the code TOPPERS40.

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud Mattress

Vaya is a small brand that makes just two mattresses — one all-foam and one hybrid . You can get either one for $300 off with the code VAYA300. The brand is also offering 15 percent off platform beds with the code LD15.

Vaya Mattress

Take $300 off all mattresses, of any size, at WinkBeds. The WinkBed is our top pick for the all-around best mattress for back pain , in part because it comes in four firmness levels (including a Plus option for heavy folks). It’s a versatile and sturdy mattress — New York features editor Katy Schneider has been sleeping on one for six years and still loves it.

WinkBed Mattress

Zoma sells three different mattresses — one all-foam option and two hybrids. It also sells a few pillows, bedding items, and frames. For Labor Day, Zoma is taking 25 percent off any mattress with the code SLEEP25 and 20 percent off pillows with the code LDPILLOWS, as well as discounting mattress-and-adjustable-base bundles.
