Despite all the (obvious) positives, traveling can wreak havoc on your skin. Among the culprits: new climates, indulgent food and drinks , fatigue, drying plane cabin air, and more. For this reason, you’ll want to pack a skincare regimen that counteracts these stressors as well as targets your unique everyday needs regardless of the location.

To help you choose the best travel kit for your next adventure , we researched and rounded up selections that address a variety of circumstances and skin concerns, and fall under the TSA 3-1-1 guidelines . Our overall favorite, Fenty Skin’s The Glow Around 4-piece Travel Skincare Essentials Set, stands out for its consolidated product lineup with multifunctional items, a reasonable price point, and the versatility to be used on nearly any type of skin. But, if you want to target specific concerns or environmental stressors, read on. We’ve culled the best items for a multitude of scenarios.

These are the best travel skincare sets to shop:

Best Overall

Fenty skin the glow around 4-piece travel skincare essentials set.

Multiple products in this vegan kit do double duty, and SPF is included.

If you prefer an even more minimalistic travel skin routine, shop the brand’s three-piece set instead.

We’ve long been traveling with Fenty Beauty products in tow, and this skincare assembly — featuring standouts from Rihanna’s Fenty Skin line — is our number one pick. The vegan set, suited for normal, dry, combination, and oily skin types, includes four miniature skincare products: an antioxidant-packed cleanser, a toner-serum hybrid, a moisturizer with sun protection, and an AHA exfoliator with a reusable applicator. It has just a little more than the bare necessities to help combat travel-induced skin stress, but it’s not excessive either; it’ll all easily fit inside a clear quart-sized bag, and won’t break the bank.

We especially love that multiple products in the kit do double duty. The 1.5-ounce Total Cleans’r face wash easily wipes away dirt, oil, and makeup, eliminating the need to pack a separate makeup-removing product. The lightweight 1-ounce Hydra Vizor moisturizer contains SPF 30 and also works well as a primer. Furthermore, the moisturizer’s pump-style container is extra sanitary for travel (so you’re not transferring any germs from your fingers into a product tub). For those who prefer a more minimal routine, the brand also offers a three-piece version of the travel kit (sans exfoliator), which comes with a trial-sized body cream.

Best Overall, Runner-up

35thousand all the radiance set.

Four full-sized products (1.7 ounces each) including an SPF 30 serum and bamboo washcloth come in a clear zip case.

It’s on the more expensive side for the size.

If you’ve never heard of 35thousand, it’s a skincare line that was made for travel — literally. All of the brand’s products are travel-friendly in terms of size, containers, and the skin concerns they address. The set is more of a splurge, but that’s because each product in this vegan kit was carefully designed to function in place of multiple other products. For example, the makeup-removing cleansing balm can double as a hydration mask when left on skin for 10-20 minutes. Or, try the refreshing and toning mist in place of water (along with the cleanser) if you don’t have access to a sink.

We love that the day serum includes SPF 30 and a subtle tint hint for added glow while on the move, and the hyaluronic acid-rich cream delivers much needed hydration. The best part? The items come housed in a clear zip case (with room for a few more products) and there’s a mini bamboo washcloth which comes in a smaller zip case to keep it separate from the rest of your stash.

Best for Sensitive Skin

Ren clean skincare evercalm skin zen trio.

Natural ingredients like plant oils can help soothe delicate skin.

You may want to consult your dermatologist first if your skin is highly sensitive.

If your skin tends to be fickle, you may want to follow a less-is-more approach to your routine. Enter this three-piece system, which includes only the essentials. The ultra-gentle cleansing milk is the perfect wash for delicate skin, and the kit follows that with a calming cream for daytime and a recovery balm with an intensely nourishing barrier for bedtime. Even if you don’t generally have sensitive skin, travel conditions (such as plane cabins, new climates, and bedsheet fabrics you’re not used to) can cause your skin to flare up on vacation, and these soothing products featuring sea buckthorn berry, jojoba, and sunflower seed oils can be a welcome relief.

Best for Combination Skin

Caudalie vinoperfect brightening solution set.

The oil-free gel moisturizer is great for warmer climates.

If you prefer a more matte finish, you might not love the pearlescent moisturizer.

Designed to target uneven skin texture, this three-piece set includes a gentle glycolic essence (which the brand recommends applying with a cotton round after cleansing), a dark spot serum (to be used on face, neck, and décolleté), and a brightening moisturizer (to be slathered on morning and night, after serum application). The oil-free moisturizer has a lightweight gel texture, which makes it a great companion for trips to warmer climates. It also has pearlescent minerals which deliver an immediate visible glow to skin.

Best for Oily Skin

Priori the clear skin now kit.

This no-fuss routine is aimed at clearing and soothing blemish-prone skin.

To avoid possible irritation, start slow with the gel perfector only.

If your skin tends to break out under stress, you’ll need targeted products to combat the effects of a change in daily routine. This small-but-mighty set includes a two-week supply of skincare essentials designed to offer blemish control and clear oily skin. The first step is a calming lactic acid cleanser, which is still tough enough to remove eye makeup. Next comes a salicylic acid gel perfector aimed at balancing oily skin that can lead to breakouts, and that doubles as a mattifying primer. (The brand recommends starting usage at a few times a week to see how your skin reacts and before bumping up to daily application.) Finally, there’s an oil-free, silky-smooth replenishing moisturizer, which can also be used post sunburn to soothe skin.

Best for Dry Skin

Biossance miracle moisture set.

Four squalene-packed products work in tandem to help target parched skin.

The set does not include a cleanser or a product with SPF.

Plane cabins are practically synonymous with dry skin. That’s because an aircraft’s filtration system — which takes in outside air and circulates it in the cabin — causes humidity to drop well below what is comfortable for most people. Each of the four steps in this routine (a soothing eye cream, a plumping serum, a rich moisturizer, and a finishing Vitamin C oil) contain squalane , an ingredient said to have powerful hydrating properties. Not only is the kit a good fit for anyone with naturally drier skin or who may be experiencing abnormal dryness due to time of year or destination climates, but it can be great to boost lost moisture due to the flight alone. We love that this set includes a really creamy eye product, since delicate eye-area skin might need a little extra love after an aptly monikered red-eye flight .

Best for Normal Skin

Olehenriksen find your glow brightening skincare set.

Packed with vitamin C, these products can help brighten dull, travel-stressed skin.

This set does not include SPF, and you’ll want to layer some of top of any areas where PHAs were applied.

If your skin isn’t fussy, you can focus your routine on products that target long-term skin concerns. Olehenriksen’s four-piece set is anchored by the hero ingredient Vitamin C , which can treat photoaging and hyperpigmentation. An orange fruit water-based daily cleanser, a Vitamin C serum, a nourishing gel cream, and a color-correcting eye cream are designed to help improve luminosity, which can certainly suffer when we put our skin through the stress of traveling. The weightless-feeling gel is cool to the touch, making this set ideal for warmer-weather locations — but don’t forget to pack SPF for vital sun protection, which is not included in this kit.

Best for Lips

Fresh sugar collection lip care set.

These tiny lip balms deliver moisture and a variety of subtle colors.

Depending on the length of your trip, you may not need five different options.

We’ve talked a lot about skin dryness due to travel, but don’t neglect your parched pout. Fresh’s cult-favorite Sugar lip products are famous for delivering moisture along with subtle, buildable color. They’ll do double duty on your next trip by replenishing chapped lips and potentially replacing any lipsticks you might have considered packing.

This five-piece set includes mini versions of the brand’s best-selling colorless Advanced Therapy lip treatment (a must-have to combat drying plane cabin air), refreshing and softening Mint Rush, and three buildable tinted balms. The color balms — in rosé (a rosy pink), honey (a warm terracotta), and petal (a nude blush) — deliver a subtle tint with one swipe and a deeper shade when layered. If you don’t feel like carrying five lip products, the brand also makes a three-piece set .

Best for Eyes

Charlotte tilbury recovery skin set.

A cult-favorite cream is coupled with two soothing, hydrating serums.

This set is best suited for normal and dry skin types and does not include any cleansing products or SPF.

Jet lag, lack of sleep on red-eye flights, and more can all add up to dryness and redness around the eye area while jet setting. Charlotte Tilbury’s Recovery Skin Set is designed to restore hydration and plumpness with its trio of soothing products. Included is a half-ounce container of the celebrity-loved brand ’s cult-favorite hyaluronic acid-based Magic Cream, a mini serving of a lightweight Vitamin C serum, and a depuffing eye serum containing caffeine. We especially love the eye serum because it has a metal applicator tip which delivers a cooling sensation to your eye area when applied.

Best for In-flight Use

Shielded beauty self defense system set.

We keep these moisturizing minis close while in the air to replenish skin mid-flight.

You’ll need to pack other skincare items for a full routine as this set only has a hydrating mist, facial moisturizer, and hand and body lotion.

Plane cabins are notoriously harsh on skin and just a couple of hours in the air can leave your epidermis feeling parched. Whenever we fly, we love to keep a teeny bottle of hydrating mist — such as the soothing and energizing spritz in this three-piece kit — handy for a little mid-flight refresh. You can even apply it over makeup. Equally essential: the hand and body lotion which can aid any exposed body skin pre-, mid-, and post-flight and the nourishing facial moisturizer. Designed to protect skin against environmental elements, this set is also ideal for packing for new climates that your skin isn’t accustomed to.

Best for Warmer Climates

Image skincare ready, set, discover set.

A minimalistic skincare routine means more time for soaking in your trip .

If you prefer a more radiant finish on your beauty products, the mattifying moisturizer might not be your favorite.

When outdoor activities are on the itinerary, sun protection should be at the top of your packing list (yes, even in colder locations). With ingredients designed to hydrate and brighten — plus SPF — Image Skincare’s three-item set is a great low-fuss find for beach or warm-weather vacations. It starts with a mild cleanser, which is followed by a hydrating and brightening hyaluronic acid- and Vitamin C-packed serum. The last step, a mattifying moisturizer, offers SPF 30 sun protection. A bonus: The products come in a reusable TSA-friendly clear zip case that gives you one less thing to think about while packing for your next adventure.

Best for Colder Climates

Glossier the skincare edit.

The kit comes with two of Glossier’s cult-favorite lip balm minis.

None of the included products have any SPF.

Cold, dry air can quickly lead to skin dryness and redness as well as chapped lips. If you’re traveling to a climate that’s chillier than you’re used to, Glossier’s Skincare Edit set could be a great companion. It includes mini versions of the brand’s makeup-removing Milky Jelly Cleanser, the hydrating Super Bounce Serum (which they recommend pressing 3-4 drops gently into skin after cleansing), a shea- and murumuru-butter-rich moisturizer (which doubles as a primer), and Futuredew (an oil-serum hybrid that should be applied as the last step in your skincare routine, after sunscreen). We love that this kit also gives you two Balm Dotcom lip balms (one non-tinted and one barely-there pink), which will certainly come in handy if your lips dry out when temperatures drop. A bonus: it includes a nylon-spandex headband that's ideal for washing your face, and everything comes in a molded, recyclable paper case.

Tips for Buying Travel-sized Skincare Kits

Prioritize portability.

When traveling, especially via plane, you’ll want your skincare regimen to follow certain guidelines. First, anything going in your carry-on should adhere to the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule (all liquids, gels, and aerosols must be in containers of 3.4 ounces or less and should all fit into a single, clear quart-sized bag). You’ll also want to minimize the number of products you’re hauling as much as possible, per the quart-sized bag.

Consider your usual skin concerns and the climate at your destination

You’ll also want to think about the specific stressors your skin will be exposed to on your trip and stock up on products that can help combat those: Will you be spending ample time in the sun? Are you entering drying, cold weather? Will you be wearing more makeup than usual? These are all things to take into consideration when shopping for products to pack for your next vacation.

What Is Wellness Tourism? A Complete Guide to Taking a Health-Inspired Vacation

Lauren Bedosky

Practicing health and wellness in our daily lives isn’t enough for many of us — we seek well-being when we travel, too.

Enter: wellness tourism, a concept that the U.S.-based nonprofit organization Global Wellness Institute (GWI) defines as travel associated with the pursuit of maintaining or enhancing overall personal well-being.

It’s important to note that, though “wellness”’ and “well-being” are often interchangeable and related terms, they have slightly different meanings. According to Gallup , wellness is a part of well-being and describes a healthy lifestyle beyond acute illness, whereas both Gallup and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) define well-being in a broader life context — feelings of contentment and satisfaction, and positive function in career, social, financial, physical, psychological, and other frameworks — which are important for personal and public health.

Wellness tourism, as a mechanism to support overall well-being, comes in a variety of forms.

For some, it may entail a trip or destination exclusively for wellness purposes, like a yoga retreat in the mountains, and for others, it may involve incorporating healthy habits and experiences into established trips. For example, you might bring your family to a hot spring during your annual vacation, or stop in at a spa for a massage in between sessions at a work conference.

For others still, immersion-based wellness travel, such as a pilgrimage, intensive yoga training, a visit to a humanistic integrative education center (like the nonprofit Esalen Institute ), a silent vipassana meditation retreat, or an indigenous-informed plant medicine retreat, may help deepen a spiritual, self-inquiry, or purpose-driven path.

The main point? These types of trips and health-forward activities aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. The global wellness tourism market value currently sits at $451 billion, but a 2022 report by Grand View Research reveals that it’s expected to jump to $1.02 trillion by 2030.

Here, we unpack how wellness tourism works, the possible benefits, and how to plan your next health-inspired getaway.

Common Questions & Answers

History of wellness tourism.

Wellness tourism may be everywhere today, but people have traveled with health or wellness as the primary focus for centuries.

According to  Health-Tourism.com , most ancient civilizations recognized the therapeutic benefits of mineral thermal springs , and many built healthcare facilities around them.

Ancient Greek, Egyptian, Roman, Celtic, and Hebrew cultures created health centers that attracted travelers from all over the world, per past research . Baths of different temperatures, swimming pools, exercise rooms, and rooms for massage and other health treatments became a mainstay in Roman culture, according to the World History Encyclopedia . And as early as 5,000 years ago, people trekked to India to seek benefits from Ayurvedic medicine , a holistic approach to physical and mental health.

But while traveling for wellness dates back thousands of years, wellness tourism as a global industry is relatively new, notes the Wellness Tourism Association (WTA) .

“In the early 2000s, the spa industry’s marketing message went from ‘pampering’ to ‘prevention’ and that, along with the so-called ‘wellness revolution’ was the beginning [of wellness tourism],” says Anne Dimon , the Denver-based cofounder, president, and CEO of the WTA , and the editor of TraveltoWellness.com .

These days, the wellness-travel offerings are practically endless. Whether your interests lean toward yoga and meditation, spa experiences, weight loss, hiking, or even treatments purported to be customized to your DNA — like the Chenot Palace Weggis health and wellness retreat in the Swiss Alps — there’s a trip to suit your needs.

How Wellness Tourism Works

Do you ever feel like you need a vacation after a vacation? That may not be the case with wellness tourism. Whereas traditional vacations are often busy and stressful, wellness trips aim to relieve stress and promote health, so you can reenter everyday life feeling rejuvenated and grounded.

“[Wellness tourism] provides an opportunity for people to take a break from their lives and focus solely on themselves and their well-being,” says Jeanette Lorandini, LCSW , a New York City–based licensed clinical social worker and the owner of Suffolk DBT. It can allow you to de-stress and relax without any, or few, distractions.

Many people also find that they’re more open to changing their behaviors when they don’t have to worry about everyday responsibilities. “For the most part, people try to make their lives as orderly and predictable as they can, because the less you have to think about your normal day-to-day life, the easier it is to manage,” says Michael Brein, PhD , a travel psychologist living on Bainbridge Island, Washington. “All that goes out the door when you travel.”

Being in an environment where you don’t have to make everyday decisions may allow you to experiment with new behaviors or focus on cultivating ones you’ve neglected. This can help you create healthy habits, like sleeping better, eating well, and exercising daily, that you want to follow once you return home. A small observational study out of Australia, published in the February 2017 Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found weeklong retreat experiences may lead to substantial improvements in multiple dimensions of health and well-being, maintainable for six weeks after the fact.

Plus, many wellness trips provide access to services that can positively affect mental and physical health, such as massage therapy , yoga classes , and nutrition consultations. These experiences can help you return home feeling refreshed and better equipped to handle day-to-day stressors, Lorandini notes.

Many people plan their own wellness-travel experiences, but you can hire a travel adviser if you don’t have time or need to pull it off, or need help finding high-quality options. The WTA offers a member directory where you can find vetted travel advisers who specialize in wellness tourism.

Types of Wellness Tourists

According to the GWI, wellness tourists fall into two main categories.

This traveler is mainly motivated by wellness when choosing their trip or destination. For example, they may book a weekend at an all-inclusive health resort or go on a dedicated meditation retreat.

This traveler seeks to maintain wellness while traveling, no matter what kind of trip they’re on. For example, they may take a yoga class during a family vacation or visit a spa during a business trip.

Possible Benefits of Wellness Tourism

Most of the health perks of wellness tourism are anecdotal and can’t be backed up by research. Moreover, existing research primarily focuses on general travel, not wellness tourism. That said, we may be able to pinpoint a few potential benefits of wellness travel.

1. It May Boost Happiness

New experiences and changes in scenery can give some people a mood boost. In a study published in July 2020 in Nature , people with more variability in their day-to-day location tended to be happier. Meanwhile, a past study found that women who vacationed twice a year were less likely to suffer from depression and chronic stress than women who vacationed less frequently.

2. It Provides Lasting Stress Relief

A wellness-inspired getaway enables you to escape the stress of everyday life and focus on activities and experiences that promote well-being. And the stress-relieving benefits of this kind of travel are almost immediate. According to a nonacademic online survey by Expedia referenced in 2018 by the Global Coalition on Aging , 88 percent of U.S. respondents reported feeling more relaxed and less anxious after being on vacation for just a day or two, and the same percentage felt optimistic and positive after a trip.

Time spent disconnected from daily stressful situations can also lower your overall stress once you return home.

Even a short trip (including to local venues) can potentially offer lasting stress relief. In one small study published in 2018 in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health , researchers had 20 midlevel executives spend four nights in a hotel outside their usual environment, while a control group of 20 spent their vacation at home. While both groups noticed immediate improvements in stress and well-being, the hotel cohort saw greater benefits. What’s more, the positive effects could still be felt 45 days post-vacation.

3. It May Improve Heart Health

The stress-lowering effects of travel may have benefits for your heart.

In a past study , middle-aged men at high risk for heart disease who reported that they had taken a vacation in the past year were 17 percent less likely to have passed away than men who hadn’t traveled, in research conducted over a nine-year period.

That said, the authors of the aforementioned study note that, while vacations may improve heart health by lowering stress, it may be that healthier people are more likely to travel. More research is needed to determine if and how travel benefits the heart and mortality risk. If you have a heart condition, be sure to consult your physician before you take a trip.

4. It May Enhance Brain Health

Exposure to new behaviors and environments through travel may stimulate the brain in new ways, potentially helping you stay sharp, according to the report from the Global Coalition on Aging.

In fact, when the authors of a past study followed more than 2,000 older adults for three years, they found that those who regularly participated in social or leisure activities, such as traveling, had a lower risk of dementia. According to the CDC , dementia is a general term for when the impaired ability to remember, think, or make decisions interferes with everyday life. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia , and it mostly affects older adults, per the CDC.

Wellness Tourism Risks

Travel of any kind comes with risks. You may face personal safety or environmental risks, such as altitude challenges, heat and humidity, foodborne and waterborne illnesses, and diseases carried by animals and insects, notes the World Health Organization (WHO) .

Traveling with a medical condition can also be risky. Air travel in particular can pose risks for people with cardiac failure, heart rate or rhythm disorders, epilepsy , and those who have recently had a heart attack or stroke, according to  Johns Hopkins Medicine .

Consult your medical healthcare provider if you plan to take a trip so they can offer guidance and support and help you craft an experience that’s appropriate for your healthcare needs.

Who Might Want to Try (and Avoid) Wellness Tourism

Wellness travel is for anyone and everyone. If you have the desire and the budget for a wellness trip, it may make you happier, relieve stress, and potentially improve brain and heart health.

Given the nature of being outside of your daily comfort zone, wellness tourism may be a stressful experience. “People with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression may find the experience more difficult than someone without these issues, so it’s best to speak with your doctor before making any plans,” Lorandini says.

People with chronic conditions don’t necessarily need to avoid travel. You should see your healthcare provider as early as possible before traveling to discuss any risks and create a care plan, per Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Access to Wellness Tourism

Wellness tourism can be expensive — for example, a seven-day stay at the Chenot Palace Weggis health and wellness retreat starts at $5,722, and tuition at Esalen Institute varies from $540 to $8,000 depending upon accommodation choice and workshop fees. But there are plenty of budget-friendly wellness-travel options out there, Dimon says. Just keep in mind that what’s considered affordable to one traveler may not be to another.

When searching for affordable wellness retreats and other health-inspired travel options, be sure to factor in transportation (airfare, train fare, car rental). Staying closer to home can cut down on your expenses significantly, and as mentioned above, even getting away on a local trip brings possible health benefits.

Depending on where you stay and what you do, you may also save money by designing your own wellness vacation; no rule says you have to sign up for a weeklong all-inclusive trip. “Think about it,” Dimon says, “Someone could enjoy a self-guided wellness vacation at a three-star hotel, reading, relaxing, walking in nature, making healthy food choices, getting a good night’s sleep, and simply being away from the stress of their everyday lives.”

Creativity and wellness tourism go hand in hand. With endless options available, you can craft a wellness trip to fit any budget.

4 Tips for Getting Started With Wellness Tourism

Follow this expert advice for making the most of your next wellness-travel adventure.

1. Start Small

You don’t have to spend a lot of money or time to be a wellness tourist. If you already have a family or business trip on the calendar, look for opportunities to focus on your health and well-being while you’re away. Check out the area you’ll be visiting to see if there are any wellness supportive experiences you’d enjoy. Consider yoga studios, hiking trails, healthy breakfast spots, spas, hot springs, and cooking classes. If you don’t have a trip scheduled, consider planning a self-guided wellness vacation. If you’re working with a limited budget, look for a hotel, AirBnB, or campground you can drive to and spend a few days away from your usual environment.

2. Find Inspiration

Wellness tourism offers so many possibilities that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Where should you go? Should you sign up for a weekend retreat or try to DIY? Asking friends and family for recommendations is always a good first step. But you can also find inspiration by reading about other travelers’ experiences. TraveltoWellness.com , an online magazine for wellness-minded travelers, offers many articles detailing new travel options and stories from contributors who have visited a particular place. Use this and other online travel resources to help you discern what wellness experience fits you. (Also, see our wellness travel resources section at the end of this article for more.)

3. Identify Your ‘Why’

What’s your reason — or your “why” — for taking a wellness trip? Do you need a relaxing environment where you don’t have to plan anything or make decisions about food or activities? Or do you want to learn more about yourself, a culture, practice, or activity? Setting your intention and articulating your “why” may guide you toward finding and planning the right travel experience for you, says Lisette Cifaldi , the director of behavioral health at Hilton Head Health, a weight loss and wellness resort on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina.

4. Hire an Expert

If you dislike planning trips, you’re too busy, or you’re not sure where to start, reach out to travel advisers who specialize in wellness, Dimon suggests. The WTA offers a directory of travel advisers who offer wellness-travel guidance. Looping in a professional who knows the industry and who can make suggestions tailored to your well-being goals may be a solid starting point.

How to Make the Most of Your Next Wellness Trip

Follow these expert tips for preparing for and winding down from your wellness travel adventures so you can maximize the benefits of taking precious time off.

Before You Go

  • Set a goal  Give yourself a goal to focus on during your trip. This way, you can plan your trip around that goal and maximize your time, Cifaldi says. You can also think about how you want to feel after returning home “and use that as inspiration when planning activities or experiences during your stay,” Lorandini says.
  • Plan logistics.  Whether you’ve scheduled an all-inclusive experience or you’re DIY-ing, some logistics will be involved. “Read up on the different activities and services available at the destination so you can make informed decisions about how to spend your time there,” Lorandini says. Plan as many logistics as possible beforehand so you don’t have to worry about them during your trip. For example, if you’re doing a self-guided vacation, come up with a list of healthy food restaurants or grocery stores near your place of stay.
  • Get support.  Can any friends or family members help with everyday responsibilities (childcare, pet-sitting, plant-watering) while you’re gone? Can your coworkers cover for you while you’re gone? Having a support system in place to handle routine tasks allows you to stay present and relaxed during your trip, Cifaldi notes.
  • Practice self-care.  Preparing for a trip can be stressful, but try to take care of yourself mentally and physically in the days leading up to your departure. This means eating nutritious meals, getting enough sleep, practicing relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation, and exercising, Lorandini says.

After You Get Back

  • Reflect:   Go easy upon reentering everyday life. Take some time to let the experiences you had on your trip soak in. “Journaling about your experiences can be a great way to process all you learned and hold onto those feelings of relaxation and well-being,” Lorandini says.
  • Change your environment.  Continue your wellness journey once you return home by tweaking your environment to encourage the healthy habits you practiced on your trip. “You might clean out your pantry to include more health-friendly options or find a space in your home to dedicate to a daily meditation practice,” Cifaldi says.
  • Find a community.  Connect with people who share your wellness interests. Cifaldi suggests starting with group wellness or fitness classes. You may meet people who are walking a similar well-being path and can support you along your journey, she says.

Travelpro Platinum Magna 2 29

Travelpro's Platinum Magna 2 is the best suitcase to invest in. It’s solid construction will survive years of vacations, trips back and forth from college, or extended business travel.

The 29-inch design offers 137 liters of packing space, which was more than adequate to house all of the items we packed into it during testing. Its rugged Cordura exterior ensures it'll come out of your plane's cargo hold in one piece, no worse for wear. The suitcase, which measures 29 x 20.5 x 12.75 inches in size and weighs just over 11 pounds, has four spinner wheels that are aligned by magnets. This guarantees that all of the wheels move in the same direction at the same time, no matter which way you push or pull the suitcase. Whether you’re wheeling through customs or throwing it in the back of a rental car, this suitcase is easy to use.

If you're in the market for a stylish bag to take aboard the plane, we really like Away's Bigger Carry-On. The compartments inside are very functional, including sections for shoes, toiletries, clothes, and even dirty laundry. With its sleek design, ejectable battery, innovative compression system, and personalization options, the Away isn’t so much a piece you own but a companion with whom you’ll share your most precious travel memories.

Nectar's foam mattress is our top pick for its comfort—which strikes a balance between firm and plush.

The company also offers "white glove" delivery for an extra costthat starts at $149. Our test mattress had a bit of a weird "packaged" smell at first, despite the site claiming you shouldn’t notice any odors, but that dissipated after about 12 hours and "was never an issue for me, my partner, or our cat," our tester wrote.

The best mattress in a box - Tuft & Needle

Tuft & Needle's Original Mattress offers a lot of bang for your buck.

The mattress is cased in a mattress cover that’s designed to be breathable, though it is slightly cheap-feeling than others and bunched up a bit beneath tight-fitting sheets, though not distractingly so. Tuft & Needle's excellent, prompt, friendly customer service is a perk, as well. At this intersection of price and quality, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better pick.

Xtreme Comforts pillow - Best Overall

The Xtreme Comforts pillow, despite its overzealous name, is the pillow we're happiest to recommend for most people. Where it really shines is its customizability. The pillow’s packaging states that is is intentionally overstuffed for the user to modify to their desired loft. Our tester removed about a quarter of the bamboo memory foam and kneaded the pillow until the foam was evenly redistributed and it felt comfortable to lie on. As the foam is shredded, you don't feel lumps and bumps—the contents mold around your head, neck, and spine so you feel supported.

It might seem a little strange that the least expensive comforter in our testing roundup beat out its competition, especially when several are more than 10 times the cost—we were surprised, too. But our testing scores don’t lie.

The Linenspa Comforter edged out the other comforters in a few key areas. It's super-soft, thanks to its microfiber fabric, which is almost a shame to cover with a duvet. It's incredibly warm, filled with a hypoallergenic down alternative. It also comes in every size you could want, from Twin XL to California King, in white and several basic colors and patterns to choose from. With the exception of the white, these comforters are reversible to give you two styling options, or you may cover with a duvet, though there's no need as the fabric washes beautifully.

Here’s the skinny on these amazing sheets, which bested 10 other brands for the top spot on our test. Each set comes with a pillowcase or two (based on size), a flat sheet, and a fitted sheet that fits mattresses up to 15 inches deep. The 100 percent cotton fabric is constructed in a sateen weave, which means the sheets are smooth to the touch and have a somewhat shiny appearance. The Brooklinen Luxe Core Sheets aced our other tests, as well. They wrinkle significantly less than other options, likely due to their sateen weave, and stains came out easily.

There are more than a dozen standard colors and patterns to choose from, and you can get this set in sizes from Twin XL to California King.

For that tucked-in feeling, the Gravity Blanket was the most luxurious and well-crafted weighted blanket we tested. While the price isn’t cheap, this blanket’s quality construction will likely last for years to come. The model we used measures 72 by 48 inches, roughly the size of a small throw, and it comes in 15-, 20-, and 25-pound options, as well as two colors. The weight is just right, providing a comforting amount of pressure without feeling suffocating, and because the blanket isn’t too thick, you don’t get too hot while sleeping under it. Plus, the velvet cover feels incredibly luxurious and cozy. We also like that this blanket isn't bulky, making it easier to fold up and store than several other options. Its cover is also machine-washable, unlike much of the competition.

For many runners, the only thing more important than the shoes on their feet is the GPS watch on their wrist. Our testers, avid runners themselves, selected the Garmin 245 Music as the best option out there for recording runs and displaying stats—such as time, distance, and pac—on the run.

Like most running watches, the 245 also tracks daily steps, sleep, and other workouts such as bike rides and swims. It has some smartwatch features, including calendar, text, and phone alerts, and weather report. In addition, many premium features that were once only available on pricier Garmin models have trickled down to the mid-priced 245, including free race training plans, the ability to design and follow workouts from your wrist, and safety and tracking options that allow you to share your activity and location to others via email or text.

Fitbit Charge 3

Some of us need a bit more motivation to get up and moving. The Fitbit Charge 3's activity reminders, its massive battery life, its easy-to-use interface and app, and its community of users make this our top fitness tracker. You can view all of your stats (steps, heart rate, calories burned, distance moved, etc.) on the tracker, and its side button and touch screen makes it easy to navigate and view your info. These stats also sync to the Fitbit app, so you can track everything there in greater detail. You can enable notifications for texts, calendar events, and weather updates, and use it to track all kinds of workouts, including swimming, as it's fully waterproof. What really stands out with the Charge 3 is the battery life. It lasted 10 days the first time we charged it and continued to impress us.

When it comes to establishing a regular yoga practice, having a great mat is of the utmost importance. The Lululemon Reversible impressed our testers with its tactile surface that allows you to firmly plant your hands and feet without slipping while switching or holding poses. The rubber base has just the right amount of softness for comfort without causing unsteadiness. It’s easy to wipe down after a workout, too, though it does take some time to fully dry. And while it's a bit on the heavy side, it rolls small, which is great for portability.

If you only want to zap excess moisture to avoid sleeping on or leaving the house with wet hair, this dryer can do that in less than five minutes—yes, it’s that powerful. When our lab experts tested the dryers’ strength by balancing ping-pong balls above each nozzle and turning on the highest airflow options, the Bio Ionic surpassed most other dryers, with only one out-blowing it.

It's also among the lightest dryers we tested and is incredibly intuitive to use. In addition to the two power settings, the dryer has three heat settings (high, medium, and cool) one “cool down” button, and two nozzle accessories to help control airflow. Styled hair came out so smooth that our tester, who normally flat-irons her curly hair post-blowout, could skip that extra step.

Wahl is synonymous with professional hair grooming and has been a trusted brand in the industry for nearly 100 years, and this beard trimmer proved worthy of the prestige. It combines a sleek, travel-ready design with a comfortable and effortless trim. On top of it all, its impressive battery life is leagues above its competitors.

Right out of the box, the Wahl’s quality is apparent in its slender-yet-substantial stainless steel frame. This trimmer has a welcome heft to it and felt less like a toy and more like a professional grooming tool than others we tested. With a quick charge, the trimmer was ready for use and offered extremely fast and precise blade movement that made for a very comfortable trim. It’s not as easy to clean as a waterproof trimmer, but it’s not hard to keep blades in top shape with the included cleaning brush and oil.

While the Wahl trimmer may not offer the variety of trim lengths that some other trimmers do, there’s simply no replacement for the product’s quality, effectiveness, and battery life.

InnoGear diffuser

Warm aromas and cool lights go together.

The InnoGear essential oil diffuser was by far our favorite, with its combination of thoughtful features and low price. The 150ml capacity means this diffuser can emit your favorite fragrance for seven to nine hours continuously, or nine to 11 hours on intermittent mode.

The water reservoir has a clearly-marked “max” line, but it also comes with a measuring cup so we could easily pour in the exact amount of water needed. Because the top locks onto the base instead of just lifting off like most other models, it was simple to take it from room to room without spilling the contents. The buttons on the front discreetly but clearly indicate which is for the light, and which is for the mist.

The InnoGear had everything we were looking for in a diffuser and at a low price. There are prettier diffusers out there, but the neutral look, helpful features, and affordable price convinced us that this is the best overall diffuser on the market right now.

There are other wool shoes on the market, but Allbirds stands above the rest in terms of design, comfort, and washability. Their unique aesthetic makes them one of the most recognizable shoes out there, and with a wide range of colors, your pair of Allbirds won’t necessarily look like those of your neighbor. And although all wool shoes are ultimately cozy and soft, Allbirds are the lightest our tester has tried and have a supportive sole that can withstand even the longest days of sightseeing and exploring. If you’re in search of your next great shoe obsession, Allbirds may just be the place to turn.

Wellness used to be as one-dimensional as a spin class and a smoothie. Diet and exercise are of course still fundamental, but we’ve finally started to embrace a more holistic approach to achieving better health. This means focusing on long neglected areas like a solid sex life, socializing, rest and recovery, and emotional and mental wellbeing. Feeling good now trumps looking good and healthspan—the quality of our years—has become just as important as lifespan. Longevity, the concept of living a longer and healthier life, will be the biggest buzzword of 2024, with wellness clinics as well as sybaritic beach retreats offering the latest biohacks (cryotherapy, infrared light treatments, poolside vitamin IV drips) to optimize our performance. Tantra gurus and sex therapists will be the new must-have in-house expert and artificial-intelligence empowered smart beds are fast becoming an expected amenity.

Wellness tourism is expected to hit $1.3 trillion by 2025 . Anticipating that the next generation will continue to fuel that growth, acclaimed adults-only retreats are finally opening up to kids and teens and even offering multi-generational spa retreats . With health-conscious offerings infiltrating every type of travel— family vacations , couples getaways , fly-and-flop beach escapes —it’s easier than ever to be well on your next trip . Here are the wellness travel trends and destinations, resorts , and retreats that promise to boost your health in 2024.

Sexual Wellness

According to research from the World Health Organization, boosting your sexual wellbeing is key to improving overall mental, physical, emotional, social, and spiritual health. Yet, for years, experts have touted the importance of honing a mind-body connection without mentioning the word sex. Forward-thinking wellness retreats are helping shatter the taboo with new programs focused on exploring intimacy and desire . Tantra sessions are primed to be the new couples massages with properties like Hotel Wailea in Maui introducing tantra classes rooted in themes such as exploring sacred sensuality. Hotels like Shou Sugi Ban House in New York have started hosting sexual and emotional intimacy retreats led by tantric experts and clinical sexologists. At Miraval resort in Arizona , workshops on sex and desire and one-on-one sessions on embracing pleasure address topics like low libido and the female orgasm. Earlier this year, SHA Wellness Clinic in Alicante, Spain, launched a sexual health unit staffed with gynecologists, hormonal experts, and urologists. SHA Mexico , which debuts this January in the Yucatán Peninsula , will also have a dedicated sexual health unit offering similar therapies and diagnostic testing capabilities. In October 2024, private island wellness resort Aerial BVI will host its first Elevate Love Summit, a four-day retreat rooted in love-language mastery and rekindling physical and emotional intimacy.

Biohacking Beach Vacations

Islands you once escaped to for sybaritic pleasures are now attracting a health-conscious crowd in search of more than vitamin D and salt air. Beach vacations now deliver the latest biohacks to boost longevity (or at least help you recalibrate after a full moon party). Guests at 1 Hotels Hanalei Bay in Kauai are welcomed with a vitamin B 12 shot rather than a traditional mai tai and an exclusive collection of Within Wellness rooms and suites are equipped with recovery tools like infrared PEMF mats that stimulate cell regeneration. ONDA, the just-opened spa at Susurros Del Corazón, Auberge Resorts Collection in Punta Mita , Mexico has a "wellness library" stocked with loaner Theragun massagers and compression technologies to improve circulation, and guests will soon be able to request in-room IV infusions that aim to strengthen immunity.

Katikies Kirini in Santorini has supplemented its spa with an outpost of a ZOE Bio Regenerative Wellness Clinic where guests can get live blood analysis or book hyperbaric oxygen chamber sessions. Six Senses Ibiza recently teamed up with biotech company RoseBar to offer guests full diagnostic testing that can inform biohacking treatments like localized cryotherapy and Soneva Soul wellness centers at Soneva Jani and Soneva Fushi in the Maldives will soon be offering stem cell therapy. Through a partnership with Next/Health longevity center, Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea has launched a multi-day Longevity Protocol package that includes everything from stem cell therapy to NAD+ (aka the fountain of youth) IV drips.

Intergenerational wellness programs are on offer at Zulal Wellness Resort in the heart of Qatar’s desert landscape.

Multi-Gen Wellness Getaways

Wellness has long been an individual pursuit with adults-only health retreats forcing parents to leave the kids at home and focus on self-care. Now, wellness vacations are becoming a family affair. At the 2023 Global Wellness Summit Krip Rojanastien, CEO of Chiva-Som International Health Resorts, noted it’s “crucial that wellness knowledge and understanding be built into early education” and as knowledgeable professionals we are “well-placed to provide guidance on physical and mental health at all ages.” To that end, Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som in Qatar has introduced family bonding retreats aimed at fostering healthy eating and exercise habits as well as intergenerational retreats for grandparents and grandkids that involve healthy cooking classes, family fitness activities, and intergen spa time. Health retreat pioneers, Miraval and Canyon Ranch, will both welcome guests of all ages for the first time in 2024. Miraval Berkshires resort in Massachusetts will host a Spring Break family week and in July, Canyon Ranch Lenox , also in Massachusetts, will run a week-long family summer camp complete with kid-friendly spa treatments and outdoor family adventures.

Grief-focused retreats include everything from surf therapy to hypnotherapy.

Grief-Related Wellness

The last few years have been heavy, and many people have struggled to cope with the overwhelming weight of the world. Experiencing fleeting feelings of sorrow is normal, but when grief lingers it can have serious physical and emotional repercussions such as depression, anxiety, and chronic stress. Talk therapy sessions are no longer the only option to move past the loss of a loved one , the end of a relationship, or a traumatic event. New grief-focused retreats prescribe everything from surfing to chakra realignment. The grief recovery program at New Life Portugal, a wellness center in Serra da Estrela Natural Park, incorporates meditation and yoga and workshops on topics like transitions and wonder and awe. In the UK, the Grief Space taps into the healing powers of nature during its five-day Grief Alchemy retreat on the bucolic grounds of Erth Barton manor in Cornwall. Wave riding is the foundation of trauma resolution retreats hosted by surf therapy company, Resurface. Week-long trips in Sri Lanka and Morocco include daily surf lessons as well as mindfulness practices and group therapy sessions.

For those hesitant to share their feelings in a group setting, Carillon Miami Wellness Resort ’s resident hypnotherapist taps into the subconscious to help guests manage grief and release emotional blockages. Hotel Las Torres in Chilean Patagonia recently introduced grief-relieving massages designed to release oxytocin (the mood-boosting hormone) and L’Auberge de Sedona ’s customizable Pursuit of Peace experience taps into aromatherapy, reiki, sound healing, and chakra reboot sessions to help guests find closure—no talking required.

Blue Zones Retreats are the New Bootcamp

Netflix’s hit series Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones reignited our obsession with discovering the fountain of youth. This fascination with longevity will likely bring a boom in tourism to the five Blue Zones: Okinawa, Japan , Sardinia, Italy , the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica , Icaria, Greece , and Loma Linda, California . Italian tour company Tourissimo has already designed a Blue Zone Diet, chef-led cycling itinerary in Sardinia . This summer, Andaz Costa Rica Resort at Peninsula Papagayo will host a six-day Blue Zones retreat that explores the secrets of regional centenarians. And pioneering wellness sanctuary Kamalaya in Thailand has developed a Blue Zones group retreat rooted in plant-slanted meals inspired by these regions’ traditional diets, natural movement, and other Blue Zones Power of 9 lifestyle habits.

Sleep Is Still in the Spotlight

The quest for improved sleep hygiene has become such a top priority that resorts are designing dedicated suites and retreats to help insomniacs embrace better habits. And they’re enlisting the help of artificial intelligence-powered smart bed companies to ensure guests get a solid night’s rest. Select rooms at California’s Mission Pacific Hotel now have Eight Sleep smart beds which leverage AI to dynamically cool and heat the body to keep guests snoozing and the Malibu Beach Inn ’s new sleep suites feature Sleep Number smart beds and heated eye masks equipped with biometric sensors that calm the heart rate to induce a state of relaxation. Carillon Miami Wellness Resort recently partnered with high-tech mattress company Bryte to launch a four-night Sleep Well Retreat that includes a luxury apartment with a Bryte Balance Smart Bed, plus a Sleep Well Circuit of treatments such as quantum harmonic sound therapy table sessions and vibroacoustic, electromagnetic, and infrared therapies.

Innovative light and sound therapies are hallmarks of the latest sleep aids. The new six-plus hour Dream Like Relaxation treatment at the spa at T he Logan Hotel in Philadelphia takes place in a room with specialized lighting to mimic the night sky. In January, Swiss wellness brand Chenot will introduce an option for guests to enhance their detox program with a Sleep Cycles module focused on increasing time spent in deep sleep. Specially designed sleep suites are equipped with technology that mimics the natural acoustic environment (panels on the ceiling filter sound like a leafy tree canopy), and light sequences mimic a natural sunset and sunrise. And nanobionic bed linens emit far infrared light (the longest wavelength that penetrates deeper into the tissue) for a more restorative sleep. Treatments, such as photobiomodulation, neuro acoustic deep relaxation, and cryotherapy are specifically timed to each guests’ chronotype and circadian rhythm.

Women’s health retreats, particularly those targeting menopause, will be a big area of growth in 2024.

The hotel has partnered with nutrition expert Amanda Hamilton to offer detox-style meals focused on metabolic and gut health. When Longfellow Hotel opens in Portland, Maine in the spring of 2024, women’s health, particularly menopause, will be a focus of its programming.

Oily skin, red eyes, and greasy hair: That paints a pretty accurate picture of what many of us travelers look like when we step off the plane for vacation. On the return trip, add sunburn, exhaustion, and blisters.

Making sure you’re armed with the right travel beauty products might not seem like a trip-planning priority, but living out of a suitcase shouldn’t mean neglecting your skin and hair. It’s nearly impossible to keep up with your regular beauty routine when on the road, especially during days-long continent-crossing trips to the far side of the planet. But with the right assemblage of packable beauty products, you can maintain a fresh and bright appearance no matter where your travels might take you.

Travel Beauty Tips Experts Swear By

You don’t have to pack your entire medicine cabinet to maintain a beauty regimen on the road. These multiuse packable products are your best bets for keeping beauty pitfalls at bay while traveling. Here are travel beauty tips experts and other frequent travelers told us they swear by for all types of skin and hair, as well as the right products to use when traveling.

Before you even head out for vacation, stop to think for a few minutes about what beauty pitfalls may lie ahead for your specific trip. Will you face dry cabin air on a long overseas flight? Are you going to a sunny beach destination during long summer days? Will you be crossing multiple time zones?

Joanna Schlip , a celebrity makeup artist, says the most important thing travelers need to know is their skin. “There is no one fix-it-all for everybody … you have to know how you’re going to react.” And that means picking products you’re used to using and that work with your body. Dr. Joseph Kvedar, a board-certified dermatologist and Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School says, “What I tell my patients is, it’s most important what feels good on your face and what you feel comfortable wearing, rather than a specific brand.”

Travel Beauty Tip: Pare Down Your Routine

Let’s face it: on travel days, the chances that your makeup is going to look as fresh on your arrival as it did when you began your trip are slim to none. The dry air and close quarters are just waiting to wreak havoc on your skin, not to mention the mascara smudges that tend to happen if you nod off. Instead, board the plane not sporting makeup, and wait until you reach your destination before applying makeup. At the very most, Irene Hatziantoniou and Mary Ditto, aestheticians and owners of North Coast Aesthetic Center, recommend wearing a tinted moisturizer instead of a heavy foundation, or a tinted lip balm instead of lipstick if you want a little color.

“Having a touch-up bag is key,” says Schlip. By packing a small, 3-1-1 compliant bag that you can pull out as soon as you arrive at your destination, you can head out on the town without missing a beat. Hatziantoniou and Ditto recommend including eye drops for red eyes. Schlip recommends combating oily skin with blotting papers , and to apply powder when you reach your destination. A little shimmer powder on your cheekbones can brighten up your complexion, and if your hair looks a little greasy, tap in some translucent powder or dry shampoo to absorb the oil. Other quick fixes to include are mini emery boards , nail polish remover wipes , and nail polish strips for broken nails; and moleskin for shoes that pinch and rub your feet to avoid blisters.

Put together a small carry-on kit comprised of a few key cosmetic items in a quart-sized zip-top bag. This kit should have everything you’ll need to freshen up before you land. The exact items to pack depend on your skin type and the kind of makeup you like to wear, but, generally, you’ll want to pack a cleanser or pre-moistened makeup-remover wipe (we like Olay 4-in-1 Daily Facial Cloths for Sensitive Skin and cut these in half to double the usage), a moisturizer , and whatever basic cosmetic essentials you think you might need.

Travel Beauty Tip: Wear Sunscreen

If you’re going to a hot, tropical destination, chances are you’re already packing the sunscreen, and with good reason. “The closer you get to the equator, the stronger the sun is and the shorter amount of time you can stay out [without getting] serious sun damage consequences,” says Kvedar. But your UV exposure might be happening while you’re still 30,000 feet above the ground. Kvedar notes that windows don’t block all UV rays, so “if you’re in a window seat on a long flight, and there’s a lot of sunshine, you could get a lot of exposure to UVA. The higher you go the more intense that is.”

In order to protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun, Schlip recommends products with SPF already included. “Sunblock is hard to reapply, and most people, when they’ve done their makeup, they don’t think to reapply in the middle of the day. You feel like it’s going to take your makeup off.” But new technologies have allowed for SPF in powder form , from mass-market lines to department store products. “It’s awesome because it’s so easy to reapply a bronzer or powder,” she says.

There are also plenty of oil-free options that you can apply under makeup or mix with your favorite tinted moisturizer. Dr. Yadav pairs SPF 30 with noreva Exfoliac Tinted Anti-Imperfection treatment for a skin-benefiting concealer, and recommends Neutrogena’s Dry Touch sunscreen for a matte-finish SPF. If oily skin is more of a problem for you, Yadav suggests Avene’s Cleanance Expert cream , which exfoliates and reduces oil production.

Travel Beauty Tip: Oils Can Be Your Friend

For those with dryness issues, winter travel can be harsh on hair and skin. Don’t be afraid of oils, which do wonders and pack small. Skip clunky moisturizer and hair treatment bottles in favor of a travel-sized dry oil. A dry oil is a non-greasy oil that hair and skin can easily soak up without leaving residue behind—oils that are classified as dry include argan, jojoba, and rosehip seed.

SmarterTravel’s Shannon McMahon always packs a small bottle of rosehip oil, which has brightening and rejuvenating benefits for skin and goes a long way in dry hair. Rub in a few drops where you need it, and apply to the face and neck before bed every night for anti-aging benefits. It’s effective at removing makeup if you use a little bit extra and wipe the excess away with a tissue, and it’s also great for men as a beard oil.

Organic Rosehip Seed Oil

Travel Beauty Tip: Combating Jet-Lag

It’s no secret that being rested reflects in the way you look. “Sleep is critical to your appearance,” according to Kvedar, “and there’s no better way to mess up your sleep than crossing time zones.” When you’re trying to adjust to a new locale, avoid drinking caffeine after 2:00 p.m. local time and forgo heavy alcohol use. Combined with good hydration, staying rested will also help you to prevent jetlag . Also, if you wear contacts, consider wearing your glasses while you travel so you can take a  quick nap  without irritating your eyes or risking an eye infection.

Maybe you have a favorite eye cream that you swear by. If you’ve found a product that works for your skin, invest in a travel-sized version, ask for a sample from Sephora or your department store’s makeup counter, or pour some into a tiny, packable pot. To de-puff your eyes while on the plane, scoop some ice out of a cup of water, wrap the ice in a napkin, and hold it on your eyes. Anything chilled, whether it’s a refrigerated face cream, ice, or a cold cucumber slice, will shrink swollen tissue and aid in reducing inflammation of the eyes.

You can also bring a packable or single-use mask to restore what your skin loses on a dry flight or to calm irritated skin after days of traveling. SmarterTravel’s Ashley Rossi recommends these 20 , including packable no-rinse versions like 100% PURE Bright Eyes Mask.

Travel beauty experts sing the praises of spring-water mist as soothing jet-lag relief. And it’s an oil-free option for travelers with sensitive or oily skin. Travel and lifestyle writer Jeanette Zinno says, “Travel-size facial mists are perfect for refreshing after a long dry plane ride or to freshen up after a day of exploring a new country.” She recommends La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water Face Mist . Hydration and cleansing relief will help you leave the plane feeling fresh-faced.

Travel Beauty Tip: Find Products That Do Double Duty

The trick to including everything you’re used to using, according to Schlip, is to choose items that have multiple uses. For example, pick a lip tint that is also a blush or eye shadow, or a cleanser that also tones and moisturizes. “If you can find a bronzer that can go as an eye shadow and SPF, perfect, slam dunk,” says Schlip. Brands like Dr. Bronner’s and Thayers offer products that can be used in several different ways, from shampoo to shaving cream, making them favorites among travelers. And for makeup, beauty brand Alleyoop makes countless “double-duty” products like a multi-use face palette , eyeshadow sticks , mini-lip colors , a 4-in-1 makeup brush , and even a 4-in-1 makeup pen .

One of the most versatile and inexpensive travel beauty products gaining steam these days is micellar water—or oil molecules suspended in soft water. It doubles as a makeup remover and cleansing toner, and requires no rinsing so it’s perfect for on-the-go use. Cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Sonam Yadav swears by the same micellar water as SmarterTravel’s Ashley Rossi: Bioderma Sensibio H20 . “I am obsessed with Bioderma’s Sensibo H20 in travel-size,” Rossi says. “Two dabs on a cotton ball will leave your skin feeling refreshed and clean, and you can actually see the dirt and makeup removed.”

Bioderma

Travel Beauty Tip: Pack Smart

Packing right is just as important as the specific travel beauty products you’re packing. SmarterTravel’s Christine Sarkis recommends using multi-use containers to stash all your necessities. “I use contact-lens cases to hold smaller amounts of face moisturizer and sunscreen for shorter trips,” Sarkis says. “It helps me maximize my 3-1-1 toiletries bag, since it takes up only a small amount of room.”

If you’re bringing a bag of toiletries on the airplane, make sure you know what’s allowed—and what’s not. Things you should pack in your checked bag include liquids— including but not limited to gel deodorants, toothpaste, perfume, and liquid makeup—in quantities of 3.4 ounces or more. According to TSA guidelines , you can pack lipsticks , disposable razors , cuticle cutters , eyelash curlers , nail clippers , tweezers and small toiletry scissors (less than four inches) in your carry-on.

Another useful travel beauty packing tip: powders. Not only are they 3-1-1 compliant (so you can take as many as you like in your carry-on), but they’re also practical in other ways. “Powder not only gives you coverage, but it also gives you SPF protection and it can absorb excess oil,” Schlip says. Be sure to pick a product that is buildable, like a compact powder, so that you can reapply. Before leaving the terminal, you can make a quick stop in the restroom to touch up with powder foundation, bronzer, and blush. Other products that come in powder form include dry shampoo and sunscreen . Look towards the brand Subtl Beauty , which makes stackable makeup sets.

Relying on free hotel amenities for your travel beauty routine can save you a lot of packing space, but be sure to bring necessities hotels might skimp on. “I’ve been noticing more hotels only provide shampoo or a terrible shampoo/conditioner hybrid these days,” SmarterTravel’s Caroline Morse Teel says. “I hate being caught without it, so I refill one of these travel bottles with my favorite conditioner just in case.”

Travel Beauty Tip: Don’t Forget About Your Physical Health

After all, beauty comes from within. The best way to keep your skin soft and healthy is by staying hydrated—and it’s even more important when you take to the skies—so pack a water bottle . Sure, flight attendants hand out water on the plane, but usually it comes in those little plastic cups or mini bottles, and it’s not as if the economy-class beverage service arrives at your beck and call. The easy solution is to pack a squishy, foldable, reusable Vapur Anti-Bottle and to fill it with water after you’ve passed through security. The BPA-free container holds 18 ounces of liquid. Kvedar says that people don’t think enough about the dehydration they will face on airplanes. It’s a good idea to drink eight glasses of water the day before your trip, and avoid caffeine and alcohol.

Wash your hands with soap and water, especially before you apply makeup. Not only will this help you  avoid getting sick on vacation , but it’ll also keep your skin looking fresh and breakout-free. And while this tip may seem basic, it can often be a challenge to find a reasonably clean sink with soap in places like buses, subways, and at germy tourist attractions . For those moments, make sure you have a small bottle of hand sanitizer readily available. Take the time to disinfect your airplane seat as soon as you sit down and avoid touching your face as much as possible.

Gastric sleeve operation

Just over 3 weeks from my op for a gastric sleeve and list 8.5 kilos. The whole process was simple and efficient from booking. Picked up from airport felling apprehensive but met with Mehmet who was great had a couple of tests that evening then had a bit of time to explore locality. 8.30 next Morning met Angel who was great she took me round the hospital to all the different departments for the various tests which took us till about ten then pretty much off to theatre. Post op care was excellent with Angel explaining all the dietary requirements on discharge Mehmet took us to the falcon hotel which was much nicer than we were expecting Great service great team and so far great results

I recently visited the REGENESIS clinic…

I recently visited the REGENESIS clinic and I must say, I am thrilled with my new teeth! The trip was organized by Mantas Savickas, who did an excellent job ensuring everything went smoothly. The communication was detailed and the team at REGENESIS was incredibly welcoming. They even paid special attention to my baby during the visit, which was greatly appreciated. ❤️🤗 I want to express my gratitude to the entire REGENESIS team for their exceptional service and warm hospitality. My doctor, in particular, went above and beyond to make sure my wishes were fulfilled, resulting in a beautiful smile that I am truly grateful for. I cannot emphasize enough how happy I am with the outcome and I highly recommend the clinic to anyone looking for quality dental care.❤️ Overall, my experience at REGENESIS was fantastic. From the attentive staff to the skilled doctor who worked wonders on my smile, I couldn't be more pleased. If you're in need of dental services, I wholeheartedly endorse REGENESIS for their professionalism, care, and outstanding results.😍❤️

Hair transplant

Came from the US for a hair transplant recently. All of the staff and doctors were amazing and the procedure went very well, but Angel was especially the best! She made me feel right at home during a very stressful time. Everyone in the group that I talked to was very impressed with Angel as well. You’re a true asset!

Hello, I had the pleasure of meeting a team full of experience with whom I felt very comfortable. I came alone to Antalya for the first time, alone from the beginning at the airport, two very nice guys were waiting for me, they took me to the hotel and informed about the plans for the next day. The big day is coming, the day of the operation. I arrived at the hospital from the entrance, a girl named Angela, lovely, beautiful and very kind, was waiting for me, we went to sign the documents, a wonderful translator I go to the doctor, waited and translated everything. He gave me the phone number and any questions I had about the transport or how I can take the pills, which is a very important issue, he was there and answered. Thank you very much Angela and Iga. It makes me happy to recommend other people to try. Thank you, now I feel fantastic

I would recommend this clinic 100%

Last week I had breast reduction surgery and I couldn’t be any happier with the entire experience. Been picked up at the airport and driven wherever I needed to go. I was looked after by and incredible surgeon Dr Murat Tüzüner with an amazing team. Within 4 hours after surgery I was walking and feeling myself just after 12 hours after surgery. The doctor has an incredible eye for detail and he gave me the breast I never had and most of all he gave me a boost in my confidence. The only downside is the language barrier in the hospital but even there I had Mehmed who reassured me that everything is ok and he was there to translate when needed. The nurses are incredibly sweet and willing to go above and beyond. Overall I felt treated like a princess from the beginning to the end

Date of experience : March 07, 2024

From the moment i decided to book with Regenesis Health travel iv recieved so much care and compassion. I underwent the gastric sleeve on the 2nd March and the tests they do before hand is unreal to make sure your fit enough for surgery. The nurses and drs and everyone involved in my care has been so amazing with every thing and nothing at all has been to much. I would highly recommend using this company. Only regret is not doing it any sooner. Cant thank them enough. Special thankyou to Mahmet who comforted my partner whilst i was in surgery an made sure he was ok as well as me! So thorough with everything :) 10/10 from us x

Excellent from start to finish…

Excellent from start to finish… Still currently here… but happy to write about our experience so far.. communication while booking in the uk is brilliant so informative then when you arrive in Antalya the service is outstanding.. meet at airport.. straight to hospital for health checks… previously I’ve had surgery in the uk and this was not done! So I was super impressed how thorough the pre opp checks were! Then breast surgery was great… and aftercare unbelievable up and about with minimal pain within 24 hours.. My husband had hair transplant too and the same excellent care. I would advise for a perfect aftercare relax to request the Falcon hotel. Can’t recommend the staff.. surgeons enough fantastic company 🙏♥️

Amazing just amazing

From the time I was picked up from antalya Airport it was amazing. Very friendly people from the guy who picked me up ( Arif) from the time I was taken back to the airport to come home.

360° lift and breast reduction

Returned from Turkey Wednesday after a 360° lift and breast reduction, the experience was amazing and the care throughout was everything and more. I'm absolutely delighted with the results and couldn't be more thankful. this was my second time using the company and I'll most definitely use them again in the future!

Date of experience : February 28, 2024

People go on to reviews for reassurance and some comments people may think this company is to good to be true but in this case trust me they really are that good!! I’ve wanted my hair done for many years and looked what felt like forever.from the day I enquired they have been nothing but helpful/quick and so easy to work with. I have friends and family waiting on me and my experience before they start booking and this is where they WILL be going. They are just exceptional In every way. ESIM and her team are fantastic. If your thinking of any treatments you would be mad to go anywhere else.

10 Surprising Facts About the 2024 Solar Eclipse

A total solar eclipse will sweep across North America on Monday, April 8, offering a spectacle for tens of millions of people who live in its path and others who will travel to see it.

A solar eclipse occurs during the new moon phase, when the moon passes between Earth and the sun, casting a shadow on Earth and totally or partially blocking our view of the sun. While an average of two solar eclipses happen every year, a particular spot on Earth is only in the path of totality every 375 years on average, Astronomy reported .

“Eclipses themselves aren't rare, it's just eclipses at your house are pretty rare,” John Gianforte, director of the University of New Hampshire Observatory, tells TIME. If you stay in your hometown, you may never spot one, but if you’re willing to travel, you can witness multiple. Gianforte has seen five eclipses and intends to travel to Texas this year, where the weather prospects are better.

One fun part of experiencing an eclipse can be watching the people around you. “They may yell, they scream, they cry, they hug each other, and that’s because it’s such an amazingly beautiful event,” Gianforte, who also serves as an extension associate professor of space science education, notes. “Everyone should see at least one in their life, because they’re just so spectacular. They are emotion-evoking natural events.”

Here are 10 surprising facts about the science behind the phenomenon, what makes 2024’s solar eclipse unique, and what to expect.

The total eclipse starts in the Pacific Ocean and ends in the Atlantic

The darker, inner shadow the moon casts is called the umbra , in which you can see a rarer total eclipse. The outer, lighter second shadow is called the penumbra, under which you will see a partial eclipse visible in more locations.

The total eclipse starts at 12:39 p.m. Eastern Time, a bit more than 620 miles south of the Republic of Kiribati in the Pacific Ocean, according to Astronomy . The umbra remains in contact with Earth’s surface for three hours and 16 minutes until 3:55 p.m. when it ends in the Atlantic Ocean, roughly 340 miles southwest of Ireland.

The umbra enters the U.S. at the Mexican border just south of Eagle Pass, Texas, and leaves just north of Houlton, Maine, with one hour and eight minutes between entry and exit, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) tells TIME in an email.

Mexico will see the longest totality during the eclipse

The longest totality will extend for four minutes and 28 seconds on a 350-mile-long swath near the centerline of the eclipse, including west of Torreón, Mexico, according to NASA.

In the U.S., some areas of Texas will catch nearly equally long total eclipses. For example, in Fredericksburg, totality will last four minutes and 23 seconds—and that gets slightly longer if you travel west, the agency tells TIME. Most places along the centerline will see totality lasting between three and a half minutes and four minutes.

health & beauty travel reviews

More people currently live in the path of totality compared to the last eclipse

An estimated 31.6 million people live in the path of totality for 2024’s solar eclipse, compared to 12 million during the last solar eclipse that crossed the U.S. in 2017, per NASA .

The path of totality is much wider than in 2017, and this year’s eclipse is also passing over more cities and densely populated areas than last time.

A part of the sun which is typically hidden will reveal itself

Solar eclipses allow for a glimpse of the sun’s corona —the outermost atmosphere of the star that is normally not visible to humans because of the sun’s brightness.

The corona consists of wispy, white streamers of plasma—charged gas—that radiate from the sun. The corona is much hotter than the sun's surface —about 1 million degrees Celsius (1.8 million degrees Fahrenheit) compared to 5,500 degrees Celsius (9,940 degrees Fahrenheit).

The sun will be near its more dramatic solar maximum

During the 2024 eclipse, the sun will be near “solar maximum.” This is the most active phase of a roughly 11-year solar cycle, which might lead to more prominent and evident sun activity, Gianforte tells TIME.

“We're in a very active state of the sun, which makes eclipses more exciting, and [means there is] more to look forward to during the total phase of the eclipse,” he explains.

People should look for an extended, active corona with more spikes and maybe some curls in it, keeping an eye out for prominences , pink explosions of plasma that leap off the sun’s surface and are pulled back by the sun’s magnetic field, and streamers coming off the sun.

Streamers “are a beautiful, beautiful shade of pink, and silhouetted against the black, new moon that's passing across the disk of the sun, it makes them stand out very well. So it's really just a beautiful sight to look up at the totally eclipsed sun,” Gianforte says.

Solar Eclipse

Two planets—and maybe a comet—could also be spotted

Venus will be visible 15 degrees west-southwest of the sun 10 minutes before totality, according to Astronomy. Jupiter will also appear 30 degrees to the east-northeast of the sun during totality, or perhaps a few minutes before. Venus is expected to shine more than five times as bright as Jupiter.

Another celestial object that may be visible is Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks , about six degrees to the right of Jupiter. Gianforte says the comet, with its distinctive circular cloud of gas and a long tail, has been “really putting on a great show in the sky” ahead of the eclipse.

The eclipse can cause a “360-degree sunset”

A solar eclipse can cause a sunset-like glow in every direction—called a “360-degree sunset”—which you might notice during the 2024 eclipse, NASA said . The effect is caused by light from the sun in areas outside of the path of totality and only lasts as long as totality.

The temperature will drop

When the sun is blocked out, the temperature drops noticeably. During the last total solar eclipse in the U.S. in 2017, the National Weather Service recorded that temperature dropped as much as 10 degrees Fahrenheit. In Carbondale, Ill. for example, the temperature dropped from a peak of 90 degrees Fahrenheit just before totality to 84 degrees during totality.

Wildlife may act differently

When the sky suddenly becomes black as though nighttime, confused “animals, dogs, cats, birds do act very differently ,” Gianforte says.

In the 2017 eclipse, scientists tracked that many flying creatures began returning to the ground or other perches up to 50 minutes before totality. Seeking shelter is a natural response to a storm or weather conditions that can prove deadly for small flying creatures, the report said. Then right before totality, a group of flying creatures changed their behavior again—suddenly taking flight before quickly settling back into their perches again.

There will be a long wait for the next total eclipse in the U.S.

The next total eclipse in the U.S. won’t happen until March 30, 2033, when totality will reportedly only cross parts of Alaska . The next eclipse in the 48 contiguous states is expected to occur on Aug. 12, 2044, with parts of Montana and North Dakota experiencing totality.

Our fitness experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute have evaluated treadmills for nearly a decade and have seen tremendous improvements in the space over the years. Not only do most treadmills fold today to maximize space when not in use, but several models offer "smart" features and guided classes so you can get an effective workout at home and save on an expensive gym membership. Our top picks for the best treadmills take into account every type of living space and every level of physical activity, focusing on high-quality performance, speed ranges, incline capabilities, substantial running belts and more. We're confident that our choices offer solutions for all different types of home gym setups and personal fitness needs.

You can learn more about how we evaluate treadmills — including tips for selecting the best treadmill for your home gym and what you should know before you buy one — at the end of this guide. Looking for even more compact choices? Check out our top picks for the best foldable treadmills .

NordicTrack treadmills have performed well in our previous treadmill tests, and the Commercial 1750 is a reliable addition to any home gym. Let's start with the build: The sleek design offers solid construction and a substantial-sized running belt for comfortably running at speeds up to 12 mph. You'll also get access to thousands of iFIT workouts with this machine (30-day trial included, with a $39/month charge after that for access to iFIT), including scenic runs through breathtaking destinations around the world with seasoned instructors. What's more, the treadmill offers incline and decline capabilities to simulate outdoor terrain and can be automatically controlled and adjusted by your iFIT trainer during the workout.

The 14-inch touchscreen is big enough to provide an immersive experience, especially during those scenic runs, and pivots and tilts so you can complement your sessions with strength training exercises for runners and other classes off the machine. But if you're looking for an even bigger screen, the Commercial 2450 model offers a robust 22-inch touchscreen at a steeper price (though the models both ultimately have very similar features which is why we chose to spotlight the 1750 instead since it comes at a more affordable price).

Another useful feature is that the Commercial 1750 does fold slightly upright, which can allow you to make room for other fitness equipment when the treadmill isn't in use. At a decent price point, this model offers a solid build and sleek design with smart capabilities that made it worthy of our best overall spot.

Sunny Health & Fitness SF-T7515 Auto Incline Treadmill

Coming in at a very affordable price point compared to most treadmills on the market, this option from Sunny Health & Fitness is a solid choice for walking or light jogging. Those tight on space will appreciate that this machine is foldable too, with a soft drop hydraulic mechanism which the company says is designed to help the deck gently lower itself to the floor.

The console is complete with a digital monitor and tracks metrics like time, distance, speed and calories burned on the LCD screen. You can take advantage of 12 built-in programs for some workout guidance too. This treadmill also includes pulse sensors and dual water bottle holders to hydrate through those longer runs. While this treadmill won’t endure fast runs (it only goes up to a max of 8 mph), I like that it has a display where the push of a button will quickly adjust your speed.

This truly is one of the most affordable automatic incline treadmills on the market, so if you're a beginner or looking for a low-budget investment then this pick is a great option. But just keep in mind that it is more ideal for walking, incline walking and light jogging since the speed capabilities are limited to 8 mph, and the running belt isn't as long as others on our list. The weight capacity itself is also on the lower side, and while I did find the machine fairly sturdy, this is something to take note of.

Run at speeds up to 12 mph and 15 incline levels with the F63 Treadmill from Sole Fitness. The moderately priced treadmill features a great marriage of useful features like a 6.5-inch LCD display that notes metrics including speed, incline, time, distance, calories and pace . It's chest-strap compatible and features pulse grips, too.

You can work out with seven built-in standard programs, but if you want to stream running and walking classes on your preferred fitness platform , you can place your tablet in the dedicated tablet holder on the console. Plus, there is a USB port for charging and Bluetooth audio speakers.

For the money, I feel it's a solid treadmill that provides a decent amount for the value and a nice-sized running belt. It does accommodate higher speeds and a substantial incline range as well, making it great for beginners and intermediate runners. Plus, I liked that the tablet holder is at eye level for viewing, which is a small feature but can make a big difference during your runs so you can keep your neck in a neutral position and not have to look down. You won't find tons of high-end features on this pick, but it's a great basic treadmill to keep you active at home and at the right price point where it's a quality investment.

The spacious running deck and sturdy frame on this newer model from Horizon Fitness has everything avid runners will need in a treadmill. Designed for performance, the 7.4 AT is thoughtfully made with advanced Bluetooth features, on-board media controls, a tablet holder and a rapid charging port.

During our tests, we found the speed changes to be seamless, allowing you to sprint with just the swipe of a palm. The QuickDial controls simplify those speed and incline adjustments (up to a whopping 15%) and are intuitive to use without having to break your stride, making it perfect for interval training. The dial on the right rolls forward to increase speed and back to decrease speed, and the dial on the left rolls forward to increase incline and back to decrease incline. "Felt very sturdy and wasn't loud, and it also felt very secure," a tester commented. "It had great handles to hold onto to get your heart rate and to hold on if going up a high incline too."

Another added bonus: The 7.4 AT is foldable so you can save some space in your home workout area when it's not in use. The 7.0 model is also a favorite of ours with a few less features if you're looking for something at a lower price.

You'll find all the bells and whistles you'd expect (and more) from a high-end smart treadmill in the Bowflex Treadmill 22. The premium 22-inch HD touchscreen comes complete with JRNY content, and your membership is free for the first two months. But if you're looking for a more affordable option, I also tested out the Bowflex Treadmill 10 that has a smaller console but still did favorably in our tests thanks to all of its incredible special features.

The Treadmill 22 model has decline and incline capabilities to mimic real-life outdoor runs, as well as a speed range of up to 12 mph. It's also Bluetooth compatible so you can link certain smart devices and heart rate monitors. All of these premium features make this machine ideal for serious runners. Of all the treadmills we tested, this was by far my favorite with its solid build and longer and wider running belt compared to other competitors. But if you're a beginner or intermediate runner, you'll still be able to find a wide variety of appropriate class content and guidance through the JRNY platform.

This option is also great for the whole family, since JRNY gives you access to entertainment options as you run, like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hulu so you can watch your favorite shows and movies while getting a workout. "This machine has transformed my workouts," a tester said. "It's very high-end and makes half marathon training enjoyable when I can't get outside. Plus I can pass the time by streaming Hulu and my other favorite services for those longer runs which really helps." Another bonus is that the Treadmill 22 is foldable, so you can make room for other home gym equipment when it's not in use. But the product itself weighs a ton (336 pounds to be exact), so I highly recommend paying for expert assembly. It's an investment but one that will likely pay off to keep you and your family motivated to consistently exercise.

Other Treadmills We Tested and Liked

line break

  • Nordictrack EXP 7i : This foldable treadmill from NordicTrack is also worth mentioning. It has a solid build and goes up to 10 mph with an incline up to 12%. The smaller profile features a built-in EasyLift mechanism for storage, so you can fold it up when you're done with your run. However, it has a significantly smaller touchscreen than the 2450 or 1750 models, as well as a slightly shorter running belt and no decline capabilities. But for the price, it's a quality model that would work well for most joggers and runners.
  • Nordictrack Commercial X22i : Those looking for a serious incline on their walk or run can turn to the NordicTrack Commercial X22i , which wowed us with its 40% incline capability. Speeds go up to 12 mph and you'll get all the other high-end features, like a large 22-inch touchscreen, speed and incline auto-adjust and easy-to-access controls. The high price and intense incline aren't for everyone, but those looking to get a serious workout and mimic strenuous outdoor hikes and runs will appreciate all that the Commercial X22i has to offer. If you're looking for an even larger screen, the X32i offers an extra-large 32-inch HD smart touchscreen.
  • Peloton Tread+ : At a whopping $6K (plus a $44/month membership fee), Peloton's newest treadmill is a steep investment. But there's no denying its quality — the crystal-clear 32-inch tilting touchscreen provides for an immersive workout experience and the Peloton instructors are some of the best in the industry. The sturdiness of the model is best-in-class too. The 67-inch running belt is one of the longest we have seen, and you can level up your workouts with "free mode" where you can manually move the treadmill by the force of your feet. But it's important to note that after Peloton's Tread and Tread+ were both recalled back in 2021 following 70 injuries and one child death, the brand has since implemented new safety mechanisms on the models. Ultimately, I feel that the Bowflex Treadmill 22 offers similar capabilities and smart features for a fraction of the price which is why that model was spotlighted in our top picks.

We had previously tested models from Proform and Xterra that we liked and recommended but are currently out of stock. We do plan to test updated models from the brands within the coming months.

How we test the best treadmills

line break

The fitness and tech experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute test sports equipment ranging from e-bikes to exercise bikes and rowing machines .

We vet treadmills for ease of use, performance and safety. For this roundup, we featured treadmills that we’ve personally tested, newer units of similar models we've evaluated, equipment from reliable brands that have tested well in the past and top-selling products whose specifications we’ve reviewed. All in all, we've tested over 30 different treadmill models over the years. We even send the units to testers across the nation for real-life feedback on functionality and performance.

sassos testing treadmills at the good housekeeping institute

We looked for options to meet every type of fitness level and home gym environment, whether you're looking for an advanced treadmill with all of the special features to support a serious (yet fun!) run or a compact foldable option. We also included budget-friendly options that still provide an effective workout. Our evaluations did show that for the most part, price was a good determinant of how well-made the treadmills were but that mid-tier options still performed well. If you're looking for a more compact option, you can check out our top picks for the best foldable treadmills too.

What to look for when shopping for a treadmill

line break

A treadmill that fits into your budget is most important, and our top picks have a wide range of price options to choose from. There are a few other important factors you'll want to take into account too.

sassos testing out the running belt on a horizon fitness treadmill

✔️ Size: Pay close attention to the dimensions of your treadmill so it’s guaranteed to fit your space. Keep in mind that most treadmills have an incline feature so you'll want to have at least a foot of clearance above your height on the treadmill to the ceiling. Some brands will let you know how much clearance is needed. In addition to size, double-check the treadmill’s maximum weight capacity to ensure you can use it safely.

✔️ Running belt: Make sure that the length of the running track is at least 4 feet long. If you’re over 6 feet tall, then the belt size should be even longer — around 4.5 feet. Running on a belt that's too short for your body may put you at risk of injury.

sassos testing out treadmills in the good housekeeping institute

✔️ Speed: Some treadmills can go up to 12 mph or more, while others have a max speed closer to 8 mph. If you plan on running quickly, always double-check your treadmill’s max speed setting.

✔️ Incline/decline: Being able to adjust the incline on your walk or run is one of the best ways to replicate an outdoor environment. Some newer models even offer decline capabilities to mimic real-life terrain. I recommend walking instead of running on the decline setting when possible to help protect your joints.

sassos folding the nordictrack 1750 commercial treadmill

✔️ Folding capability: Many treadmills on the market now offer some sort of folding feature, which can help save space when the treadmill is not in use. But not all foldable treadmills are created equal — some can collapse to the point where they can fit under a bed, whereas others simple fold upright for a bit more storage space. Most of the treadmills on this list do the latter, but if you're looking for super compact options our best foldable treadmills list features a nice variety of choices. In our tests though, I've noticed that the more foldable a treadmill is the less sturdy it tends to be.

✔️ Warranty: Check the treadmill’s warranty and prioritize products with a longer offering, especially for key parts like the motor or frame.

sassos accepting delivery of bowflex treadmill for testing

✔️ Special features: Features such as a touchscreen, built-in Bluetooth speakers and any other advanced settings will likely cost you extra. Decide whether you'll be satisfied with an LED display with standard buttons and controls or if you’d be happier with preset programs or a built-in screen offering on-demand workouts or training.

✔️ Set-up and delivery: Treadmills can be heavy and difficult to set up alone. Most offer options for expert assembly, but that typically comes with an additional fee. If you do plan to assemble the treadmill on your own, consider recruiting a handy friend or two to help. If you plan to move the treadmill to a basement or small room in your home, double-check that the dimensions will fit through narrow hallways and around tight corners.

What do I need to know before buying a treadmill?

line break

Double-check the weight capacity and dimensions to ensure the treadmill is the right fit for you and any other individuals who will be regularly using it. There also needs to be sufficient clearance around and above the treadmill (especially keep this in mind if you plan to workout on an incline). And double-check installation and if it is included or an additional fee — treadmills are typically heavy and complex to assemble on your own, so you may need to enlist the help of a friend or opt to have the company assemble it professionally in your home (often for an added fee).

What is the average life of a treadmill?

line break

There is no simple answer since this ultimately takes into account several factors, but the industry standard is roughly 7 to 10 years . If you take close care of your machine and perform regular maintenance on it then it may last even longer. Daily use will wear down the belt and may cause the machine to "age" faster. Check the company's warranty to see what they cover, as you may just need to simply replace a certain part instead of having to get a whole new machine altogether.

Are more expensive treadmills better?

line break

The phrase "you get what you pay for" isn't always true, but our evaluations did show that for the most part, price was a good determinant of how well-made the treadmills were . That's because more expensive models tend to offer additional special features, such as smart capabilities, on-demand workouts, streaming options and more. They also tend to be more substantial machines with a higher weight capacity and solid running belt. You'll even find certain models with significant incline ranges and the ability to decline. But if you don't need all of those bells and whistles, the more affordable options on our list are still high-quality with decent speed and incline ranges that will make for an effective workout.
