The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Holland America ship

Gene Sloan

Of the seven big lines that account for the majority of cruises taken by North Americans, Holland America is the brand most known for far-flung, globe-circling itineraries.

You'll find Holland America ships in almost every corner of the world at some point during the year, operating itineraries that are unusual in their diversity of routes and specific port calls.

Still, the line's heaviest presence by far is in Europe, Alaska and the Caribbean. In a typical summer, the line will deploy around half of its vessels to Europe while sending the other half to Alaska. The two regions are often the line's entire focus for summers.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

During the winter, the line will move at least half of these ships to the Caribbean, while also sending some on far-reaching voyages across the world to Asia, Australia and South America.

For the coming winter, seven of the line's 11 ships are scheduled to sail in the Caribbean, and there will be at least one ship each in Asia, Australia and South America. There also will be one ship operating an epic, around-the-world voyage — a long tradition at the line.

In all, Holland America ships sail to 98 countries, hitting all seven continents. They visit more than 470 different ports and cruise destinations. These are much larger numbers than found with such rival lines as Celebrity Cruises . The latter boasts voyages to around 300 ports in 79 countries .

Among Holland America's itineraries, you'll find everything from one-night sampler cruises between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C., to 128-night around-the-world voyages that feature stops at dozens of countries. That's a much broader range than most other big lines, including Celebrity, Royal Caribbean , Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line .

Whether you're looking for a quick getaway or an epic voyage, you can't go wrong with these five top Holland America cruise destinations.

Some of Holland America's most popular itineraries are in Europe, where the line has traditionally been a significant player. In a typical year, Holland America will deploy around half of its vessels to the region from spring until fall, making Europe one of its biggest focuses for more than half the year.

The itineraries that Holland America offers in Europe are wide-ranging, with a diverse set of routings in both the Mediterranean as well as across Northern Europe.

In the Mediterranean, sailings include everything from seven- to 28-night voyages that offer the chance to see such iconic destinations as Barcelona, Spain, and Rome, Florence and Naples, Italy, on a single cruise.

Some Holland America cruises in the Mediterranean also include visits to Istanbul and Kusadasi in Turkey (the latter a gateway to the famed ruins of Ephesus), and Haifa and Ashdod in Israel (for visits to Jerusalem and other iconic destinations in the country).

In Northern Europe, Holland America will take you to such well-known Baltic cities as Stockholm, Sweden; Tallinn, Estonia; Helsinki, Finland; and St. Petersburg, Russia, in a single sailing (note that Holland America's calls in St. Petersburg are on hold for now due to the war in Ukraine). There also are itineraries that will bring you to Iceland, Greenland and the Norwegian fjords.

Among the longest sailings Holland America offers in Europe is a 35-night "British Isles, Spitsbergen & Iceland Fjords Explore" trip that brings a complete circumnavigation of England and Scotland, several stops along the coast of Norway, and calls in both Iceland and the Norwegian-controlled Arctic island of Spitsbergen.

In Northern Europe, Holland America ships mostly sail out of Amsterdam and Rotterdam in the Netherlands (a nod to the company's Dutch heritage) and Copenhagen, Denmark.

In the Mediterranean, the line's hubs are Barcelona; Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Venice in Italy; and Piraeus (the port for Athens).

2. Caribbean and The Bahamas

holland america shore excursions europe

You usually won't find a single Holland America ship in the Caribbean and the Bahamas over the summer, when the line turns its focus to sailings in Europe and Alaska. However, come winter, Holland America will reposition quite a few of its vessels to the Caribbean and Bahamas sailings.

For the coming winter, for instance, Holland America currently has seven of its 11 vessels scheduled to sail in the regions — including its two newest and biggest ships, the 2,660-passenger Rotterdam and the 2,650-passenger Nieuw Statendam.

Holland America offers a broad range of Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries from a single home port in the regions — Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades .

If you're looking for something short, the line has you covered in the form of quick, three-night cruises out of Port Everglades to its private island in the Bahamas, Half Moon Cay. The line also offers four- and five-night voyages out of Port Everglades to the Bahamas and Key West, Florida. However, Holland America is best known for longer sailings in the Caribbean. These include lots of seven-night itineraries to the Eastern Caribbean, Western Caribbean and Southern Caribbean, but also a large number of even longer, 10- to 21-nights Caribbean voyages.

The latter trips offer the chance to see a broader mix of Caribbean islands than is typical on Caribbean sailings.

Among the most elaborate of the itineraries that Holland America offers out of Port Everglades, for instance, is a 21-day "Southern Caribbean Wayfarer/Seafarer" voyage that brings calls at the islands of St. Martin (specifically, to the Dutch side of the island known as St. Maarten), St. Lucia, Barbados, Martinique, St. Kitts, St. Thomas, Grand Turk, Hispaniola (for a visit to the Dominican Republic), Bonaire, Curacao, Aruba and Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas.

The voyage is actually a combination of two shorter, back-to-back sailings that are designed without repeating ports.

Holland America is particularly known for voyages to Alaska, where it dominates the market for cruises along with sister line Princess Cruises.

In recent years, Holland America has deployed as many as eight ships to Alaska in the summer — far more than most other lines. In the wake of a significant downsizing over the past two years , the line is cutting that number back a bit. However, it's still planning on deploying at least six vessels to Alaska in the coming summers — a huge number.

Holland America also operates its own wilderness lodges in Alaska, as well as tourist trains and buses. It uses the lodges, trains and buses to offer an extensive range of nine- to 14-night Alaska "cruisetours" that combine a cruise with land-based touring.

The Alaska cruise season is a short one, lasting roughly from May to September. For 2022, Holland America plans to deploy six ships to the Alaska market:

  • Eurodam : The 2,104-passenger vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Sitka, Juneau and Ketchikan; Icy Strait Point, Alaska; and Victoria, British Columbia. It'll also visit Alaska's Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing.
  • Koningsdam : The 2,650-passenger ship will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Vancouver, B.C. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. It'll also visit Tracy Arm and Alaska's Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing.
  • Oosterdam. Like Eurodam, the 2,388-passenger ship will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Sitka, Juneau and Ketchikan; and Victoria, British Columbia. It'll also visit Alaska's Hubbard Glacier for glacier viewing.
  • Zuiderdam . Like Koningsdam, the 1,916-passenger ship will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Vancouver, B.C. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. It'll also visit Tracy Arm and Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing.
  • Nieuw Amsterdam: The 2,106-passenger ship will primarily operate one-way voyages to Alaska between Vancouver, B.C., and Whittier, Alaska. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. It'll also visit Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing, as well as either Hubbard Glacier or College Fjord.
  • Noordam : Like Nieuw Amsterdam, the 1,924-passenger vessel will primarily operate one-way voyages to Alaska between Vancouver, B.C., and Whittier, Alaska. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. It'll also visit Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing as well as either Hubbard Glacier or College Fjord.

The appeal of the one-way sailings on Nieuw Amsterdam and Noordam is that they can be combined with stays at the Holland America lodges mentioned above to create the longer "cruisetours" of Alaska that combine a one-way cruise with a land tour.

The land tour portion of such trips brings visits to such well-known interior Alaska locations as Denali National Park and the town of Fairbanks. Holland America is also unique among cruise lines in offering cruisetours that include a land tour into the Yukon Territory of Canada.

4. Panama Canal

Have you always wanted to experience a transit through the Panama Canal? Among major cruise lines, Holland America has one of the biggest array of sailings through the waterway.

In a typical year, the line will operate more than two dozen voyages to the canal, some of which are round-trip sailings from Florida's Port Everglades while others are one-way trips between Fort Lauderdale and San Diego, California.

In the case of the former sailings, Holland America ships only transit part-way through the canal after entering it through the Gatun Locks on its Caribbean side. Such trips typically include a transit into the canal through the locks, cruising in the canal to Gatun Lake and a transit out of the canal through the locks before a stop at nearby Colon, Panama.

Among the shore excursions available from the port of Colon is a bus tour to see the locks in action from observation areas on land.

Other port calls during such Panama Canal cruises typically include the Caribbean islands of Aruba and Curacao; Cartagena, Colombia; and Puerto Limon, Costa Rica.

In the case of the one-way voyages between Florida and California, Holland America's ships will make the full journey through the canal's three sets of locks from the Caribbean to the Pacific or vice versa.

Other port calls during such cruises typically include Puerto Vallarta and Hautulco, Mexico; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; Corinto, Nicaragua; Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica; and Cartagena, Colombia.

5. The World

holland america shore excursions europe

In addition to focused voyages in a wide range of cruise destinations from Europe to Alaska, Holland America has long been known for epic around-the-world voyages that include stops at dozens of destinations in four, five or even six continents.

These trips typically take place on the line's smaller vessels and can last four months or longer, allowing Americans to travel across the globe without ever getting on an airplane.

Normally, Holland America's around-the-world voyages begin and end at Florida's Port Everglades.

The line plans one such trip for 2023 — a 128-day voyage from Port Everglades starting on Jan. 3, 2023, that includes stops in North America, Australia, Africa and Europe.

Taking place on the 1,964-passenger Zuiderdam, the trip includes a transit of the Panama Canal, multiple stops in French Polynesia including Bora Bora and Moorea; visits to multiple destinations in New Zealand; and calls at Madagascar, Mozambique, South Africa, Namibia, Angola, Ghana, the Ivory Coast, Gambia and Senegal.

In addition to its around-the-world cruises, Holland America is also known for full circumnavigations of South America that begin and end in Port Everglades.

For 2023, the line plans one such journey — a 74-day cruise on the 1,432-passenger Volendam that starts on Jan. 3, 2023.

Bottom line

Holland America offers an incredibly wide range of itineraries in cruise destinations around the world, from South America to Asia. However, you'll find the most choices among Holland America itineraries in Europe, Alaska and the Caribbean. The line is also well-known for voyages through the Panama Canal and for its epic around-the-world cruises. Its annual around-the-world sailings, in particular, are something that sets it apart from other big lines.

Northern Europe

The Northern Europe cruise region stretches from the British Isles through Scandinavia. Northern Europe cruises are also referred to as Baltic cruises and Scandinavia cruises. Amazing historical and cultural sites await passengers, and shore excursions typically visit museums, palaces, castles and cathedrals.

The Northern Europe cruise season is very short due to the cooler climate, with fewer ships sailing here. The regular per-diem rate is high compared to most other regions of the world, though we are frequently able to obtain excellent discounts for our customers on Northern Europe cruises.

  • The Northern Europe cruise season lasts from May through August.
  • Northern Europe cruises, also known as Baltic cruises and Scandinavia cruises, are typically 7 to 14 nights.
  • A few ships sail itineraries that concentrate entirely on the British Isles or the Norwegian Fjords.
  • In contrast to the Caribbean and Mexico, shoppers on Northern Europe cruises will find that items in stores can be pricey. Hand-knit sweaters, fine crystal, antiques, silver and porcelain are among items that passengers seek in these ports.
  • On Northern Europe cruises, you'll experience long hours of daylight.
  • If you need to fly a very long distance to reach your port of departure, we suggest that you arrive at the port city at least one or two days in advance of your Northern Europe cruise. This will give you time to rest and get oriented before boarding the ship. Most cruise lines offer pre-cruise hotel packages.

Holland America Oosterdam Cabins

The cabins on the Holland America Oosterdam are spacious and well-appointed, with a choice of interior staterooms, ocean view staterooms, and balcony staterooms. The cabins are elegant, with soothing colors, and many have a private verandah where you can relax and take in the views.

They are equipped with flat-screen TVs, a safe and a hairdryer. Our aft stateroom, 5184, had two single beds made up as a queen-size bed with a comfortable sofa, chair and desk area with a stool. There was also a convenient curtain that you could pull across to separate the main cabin area from the hallway, which worked well to block out any light at night.

Our spacious Oosterdam Stateroom

We definitely recommend booking this stateroom or one close to it, for its huge balcony. Ours had two sun loungers and chairs and measured 359 square feet including the outside space.

The bathroom was well designed, with a proper bath and overhead shower, a retractable clothes line and ample storage for toiletries. The Elemis body wash, shampoo and conditioner dispensers were also a nice touch. You can easily request a blanket, extra hangers or ice refill via the Navigator App.

Holland America Shore Excursions

Holland America cruises sail to destinations such as the Caribbean , Alaska, the Mexican Riviera, Canada, and New England among others. The excursions that are offered differ according to the destinations. In Alaska, they include wildlife spotting and glacier viewing, while on the Mexican Riviera they feature activities such as local cuisine, shopping and walking tours.

The Holland America Oosterdam has some fantastic shore excursions that are perfect for those looking to explore new destinations. Our Mediterranean cruise excursions were all well organised and gave a great overview of the places that we visited.

Excursion tickets are electronic and viewable on the Holland America Navigator App . Our Holland America Oosterdam Mediterranean itinerary started with a luxurious private boat transfer from Venice airport to the Hilton Molino Stucky Venice on the uncrowded Giudecca island .

After an overnight stay, we transferred to Trieste by coach and embarked on Holland America Oosterdam. From here, we sailed to some amazing Mediterranean port destinations including Split and Korcula in Croatia, Santorini and Rhodes in Greece and Kusadasi close to Ephesus in Turkey. We disembarked in Athens, back in Greece.

Picturesque pedestrianized street in Korcula

We personally tried and can recommend the following Oosterdam Mediterranean shore excursions:

  • Santorini – Thira on Your Own, which includes bus transfer from the port of Athinios to Thira and back.
  • Rhodes – Palace of the Grand Masters & Archaeological Museum on Foot – two impressive Rhodes Town landmarks.
  • Kusadasi – Ephesus tour for a great introduction to this ancient city.
  • Piraeus – Scenic Athens & Plaka on Foot with Airport Transfer – gives a good overview for first time visitors.

No matter what type of activity you enjoy, you are sure to find something that you’ll enjoy on any of the Oosterdam’s excursions.

FAQ – Holland America Oosterdam:

What is the dress code on board Holland America Oosterdam?

Dress is casual during the daytime, with footwear, shirts or cover-ups always required indoors. During meal times and activities, the dress code is smart casual, meaning that shorts, tank tops, distressed jeans and swimwear are not appropriate.

Don’t forget to pack something orange, a nod to the cruise line’s Dutch heritage. There’s an Orange Night where guests are encouraged, but not required, to wear orange.

There’s also one dressy night, although it’s not obligatory. A nice cocktail dress or top and trousers for women, and a jacket and shirt with slacks for men will work perfectly.

Reviewing Holland's excursions

I have wondered why so few of Holland's excursions have reviews from past cruisers. Now I think I know.

We usually prefer to take independent excursions for the lower price, smaller group, and the ability to research then.  But when we  took a 7 day Caribbean cruise over Christmas, we booked 3 of the HAL excursions.  The first one was suppose to be a catamaran with snorkeling from Amber Cove.  That was cancelled, so we took an all inclusive to a beach.  It was as expected with a nice beach and mediocre food and drink.  The second one was kayaking on a bioluminescent lake in Puerto Rico.  The kayak vendor was fine and we did see the lights, but the transport was terrible. An escort (not a guide) and a driver, who, when we stopped for a "comfort break," locked the bus and went to have dinner.  We waited in the rain for the bus to be unlocked. We took 2.5 hours to travel what should have taken 90 minutes.  When we arrived, the kayak vendor said we were "early" and he wasn't quite ready for us.  So the timing was really off on scheduling.

Our transport in St Thomas was also poor.  The sound system was garbled and we couldn't understand anything he said, and the breaks were smoking the whole time.

So I did want to review these excursions, thinking I would receive an email...but no.  On the last day of the cruise, I was using the chat feature in Navigator and saw that I had 3 messages.  These were asking for reviews of the excursions and apparently were sent upon the return from each.  I tried to access them, but they must be time sensitive and all I could get was an error message for each.

So if you want to review an excursion, check Navigator messages right after you return from it.

I did state my woes in my final review to HAL, but I don't expect them to follow up, and that doesn't help unsuspecting cruisers in the future.

We received e-mails to review our excursions three weeks after the cruise ended.

Thanks

We had a drip of emails to review excursions starting a few days after our cruise. I filled one out for each one.

Accord to reports, HAL cleared out reviews after Covid.  This makes sense as they may need to use new tour operators.

All of my excursions have been reviewless or only have post Covid cruises.  perhaps it depends on tour operators.  Anyway I am simply reporting what other members have reported in previous conversations

We had a bus develop transmission issues on the way back from the pyramids - we had traveled in a convoy of buses and couldn't keep up. They were ready to send a rescue bus but we were able to make it back - the last bus to arrive! I had forgotten all about it til I read your post.!

Holland America Eurodam's Best Shore Excursions

holland america shore excursions europe

Cruise ships sailing to Alaska come in all sizes and price ranges, and it's important to choose the right large or small ship for your Alaska cruise vacation. Experience plays a big part in many decisions— Holland America Line began exploring Alaska in 1947 and has continued to wow its guests with land and sea vacations to the Last Frontier for the past 70 years. The company's first tour in Alaska was in Fairbanks, but Holland America is now best known for its cruise vacations or land and sea combination tours.

Explore Alaska With Holland America Cruises

Each year Holland America sends about a half-dozen ships to Alaska, with cruises embarking in Seattle, Vancouver, or Anchorage (Seward). Most Holland America Alaska cruises are seven days long and sail Alaska's Inside Passage round-trip from Seattle or Vancouver, but some sail between Vancouver and Seward and others are 14 days or longer.

The 2100-guest Eurodam was launched in 2008 and is one of the company's three largest and newest ships. The Eurodam was significantly refurbished in December 2015, with new dining, lounge, and entertainment venues, along with suite upgrades added. The ship has excellent onboard programs that include America's Test Kitchen cooking demonstrations, computer classes, and great diverse entertainment in the Music Walk area and the show lounge.

However, on Alaska cruises, many think the best place to be is outside on the decks during the long summer days, watching the spectacular scenery pass by and searching the sea and shore for some of Alaska's famous wildlife. Holland America has an onboard naturalist who stays out on the deck much of the time when the ship is sailing. The naturalist is always ready to answer questions or point out wildlife.

The other great thing about a Holland America Alaska cruise is the variety and uniqueness of the many shore excursions scheduled for each port of call. Here are the best things to do at the Eurodam's ports of call in Alaska.

Seattle: Embarkation and Debarkation Port of Call

Seattle is a great city to visit and to embark on an Alaskan cruise. The people are friendly, and the summer weather is often pleasant. Seattle is famous for its rain, but it is usually more of a drizzle. However, the sun often shines, and the temperatures can get warmer than you might think.

Cruise ships embark from two different piers, and your cruise documents will tell you where to find your ship. The Eurodam and other Holland America ships embark at Pier 91, which is north of the downtown area near the Magnolia Bridge. Other cruise lines also dock at Pier 91, while others are at Pier 66.

It's fun to come into Seattle a day or two early and use the time to explore all the sights like the  Space Needle , Pike Place Market , the waterfront, Chihuly Gardens and Glass, and the historic Underground area. When the cruise ships are sailing in the summer months, you'll see lots of other visitors who either are embarking on a cruise or just debarked from one.

The Eurodam sails in the late afternoon for Alaska and passengers gather on the outdoor decks to watch the skyline recede and to be on the lookout for orcas and dolphins.

It's a long way to the first port of call, Juneau, so the Eurodam sails for about 40 hours before arriving in Alaska's state capital.

Juneau: The Eurodam's First Port of Call

Juneau is the capital of Alaska and because of its Inside Passage location, is the only U.S. capital that cannot be reached by car. Visitors must arrive by air or sea. It is also the only U.S. capital with a nearby glacier!

The Holland America Eurodam docks right in downtown Juneau, so those who don't take an organized shore excursion can walk to the shops, bars, or the Mount Roberts Tramway. However, the Eurodam offers over 40 shore excursions in Juneau covering a wide variety of activities, experiences, and costs. Cruise ship guests should take advantage of the unique things to do in and around  Juneau .

All of the most expensive shore excursions (over $500 per person) include a helicopter ride to a glacier, dog sledding camp, or wilderness location. Although these prices are very high, you will have a lifelong memory of the adventure. The Holland America Eurodam also has seaplane and boat excursions from Juneau. The seaplanes take you to a glacier or looking for wildlife.

Those looking for something more active can take a tour that includes hiking on a glacier, zip-lining, fishing, biking, or kayaking. Seven shore excursions take travelers to the nearby Mendenhall Glacier on a bus. Some of these Mendenhall tours allow for plenty of free time for those who like to hike.

All of the wildlife in Alaska is exotic and most species are unique to North America. Holland America has eight whale-watching shore excursions operating in Juneau. Some of these tours guarantee you'll either see a whale or get a partial refund from the operator. Whales can be seen in many parts of the world, but seeing the humpback whales in Alaska is an amazing memory to take home.

Glacier Bay: The Eurodam's Second Port of Call

Glacier Bay is the Eurodam's destination on day four of its Alaska cruise from Seattle. Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is a huge park, and much of it is accessible only from the water. Cruise ships stop near the park office and visitor's center to pick up some rangers who spend the day providing information and insight on the park.

Passengers stay on the ship, gathering in the lounges or outside on the decks to see the glaciers and wildlife of Glacier Bay. The park rangers' commentary is piped into some of the common areas so that guests won't miss anything. None of the cruises have shore excursions off the ship.

The tidewater glaciers are the stars of this national park visit, but guests might also see mountain goats, Steller sea lions, and bears. The ship sails very slowly, allowing plenty of time to take in the views. Whales aren't seen as much in the park since the melting and calving glaciers put more fresh water and silt into the water than whales like.

It's very interesting to listen to the park rangers explain about glaciers and glacial valleys and hear the Native American interpretive guide describe how important the park area was (and is) to the Native American tribes who once lived there.

Sitka: The Eurodam's Third Port of Call

Sitka is located on the outside of the Inside Passage. If that doesn't make sense, it's located on the western side of one of the islands on the Inside Passage but is on the Pacific Ocean rather than a channel. Large ships like the Eurodam of Holland America either anchor and tender their guests into town or dock just outside Sitka and provide a free shuttle bus into town.

Most cruise passengers visiting Sitka take a shore excursion to see wildlife or learn more about the history or culture of the indigenous peoples of the area. Holland America has about two dozen shore excursion options in Sitka, so it's difficult to choose just one.

Wildlife Shore Excursions

Holland America has about a half dozen tours that use boats to sail around the harbor and shorelines of some of the neighboring islands. The waters and islands around Sitka have plentiful wildlife, and animals like sea otters, eagles, whales, and sea lions are often seen from the local excursion boats. One wildlife boat tour even uses a jet boat and another uses an ocean raft that moves up to 50 miles per hour, which allows its guests to see wildlife when it slows down, plus have an exciting ride. Bears are rarely seen until the salmon start filling the streams in mid-summer. However, some shore excursions include a visit to the Fortress of the Bear rescue facility where Alaskan brown bears are rehabilitated. Other wildlife shore excursions visit the Alaska Raptor Center, which has many "raptors in residence".

History and Art Shore Excursions

Holland America also has four Sitka shore excursions for those who love history, art, and architecture. One even includes the option to create your own Alaska-inspired painting and take it home with you. Another tour takes guests to explore the Sheldon Jackson Museum, which has a huge collection of Native American and Inuit artifacts.  A third excursion looks at Sitka's Russian and Native American history at a clan-style house and the Sitka National Historic Park.

Active and Unusual Shore Excursions

Holland America has arranged 14 very active or unusual shore excursions such as kayaking, biking, hiking, fishing, exploring in a 4x4, or snorkeling in a dry suit. One very fun and unique Sitka excursion is a "Pedal and Pub Crawl", where you explore the town on a bike while learning about Sitka's history and stopping for a couple of beers along the way.

Ketchikan: The Eurodam's Forth Port of Call

Ketchikan has two distinguishing characteristics that most cruise travelers will remember—it is one of the rainiest cities in the USA, and it legalized prostitution in certain areas from 1903 to 1954. Some of the old Ketchikan brothels where the "sporting women" lived and worked (as they were called) can still be found on Creek Street, and a couple of the old homes offer tours.

Although the Holland America Eurodam is only in Ketchikan for 6 hours, the cruise ship has 33 shore excursions for its guests to enjoy. Most of these half-day tours are four hours or less, so guests can participate in a tour and still have time to explore Ketchikan on their own since the ship docks very near to Creek Street and the main shopping areas.

Some travelers wonder why cruise ships would only spend six hours in Ketchikan and then stop in Victoria for just six hours. Why not just spend more time in Ketchikan? Victoria is a great port of call, but ships stop over there in order to comply with the Merchant Marine Act of 1920 (the Jones Act). Congress passed this law to protect American shipping, but it also covers cruise ships. It requires all ships that are not flagged in the United States to include one foreign port of call on their itineraries. Since all but one (the Pride of America) large cruise ships are not flagged in the United States, they include a Canadian port of call on their Alaska cruise itineraries or embark/disembark in Vancouver.

Adventure Tours

The Eurodam has 14 adventure tours available when the ship is docked in Ketchikan. Some of these involve snorkeling; zip-lining; jeep, canoe, zodiac, or adventure cart expeditions. Others give guests the chance to fish for salmon or halibut. One of the fishing expeditions even allows you to eat the fish you've caught!

Dining Tours

In addition to eating your own catch, Holland America has four other tours in Ketchikan for foodies. The highlight of all these tours is eating Alaskan crab and/or other types of seafood. The location of the crab feast and entertainment makes each one different.

Historical and Educational Tours

Like all other Alaskan towns, Ketchikan has an interesting past, and it's not just the "sporting women". Guests can take a tour to learn about running crab traps in the Bering Sea while riding on the Aleutian Ballad, just like on television's The Deadliest Catch ). One tour explores the streets and waters around Ketchikan from a "duck", which is an amphibious vehicle. Another tour shows guests the highlights of Ketchikan and the totem pole park from a trolley car, while other tours explore the Totem Pole Park and the Saxman Native Village. One tour that is uniquely Ketchikan is its famous Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show. The ship has several tours that include entrance to the show.

Exploring Misty Fjords National Monument

Many cruise ship guests take either a floatplane or a boat from Ketchikan to Misty Fjords National Monument , the second largest national wilderness in the United States.

Ketchikan is the nearest port of call to Misty Fjords National Monument for passengers arriving on large cruise ships. Holland America has three shore excursions that go from Ketchikan to the Misty Fjords, which are about 20 miles away. All three involve a seaplane, which provides a great chance to see this wilderness area from the air. The views are magnificent!

Victoria, British Columbia: The Eurodam's Fifth Port of Call

The last port of call for the Holland America Eurodam before disembarking in Seattle is the city of Victoria on Canada's Vancouver Island . After sailing for about 29 hours from Ketchikan, the ship arrives late in the afternoon on day seven and stays until midnight, which gives guests plenty of time to take one of the 13 shore excursions or to explore Victoria on their own.

Since Victoria is more cosmopolitan than the other ports of call, many of the excursions focus on highlights to see in and around the city or things to do like have Royal Tea at Abkhazi Gardens or tour some of the city's many craft breweries. Guests who haven't seen enough whales can take one last whale watching adventure, while those who love butterflies can visit a butterfly garden outside the city.

Many cruise passengers who visit Victoria take a tour to the famous Butchart Gardens. This 55-acre garden is one of the world's most spectacular, and visitors love to explore the many individual gardens that cover the whole space like the rose garden, sunken garden, Japanese garden, or Italian garden. Although the Butchart Gardens are about 14 miles north of Victoria, you will have plenty of time to explore the entire grounds and the excellent gift shop.

Holland America Introduces ‘Dutch Day’ Culinary Experiences on Every Cruise

  • April 28, 2024

Rotterdam departing Rotterdam

Holland America Line is introducing a new “Dutch Day” culinary experience celebrating the cruise line’s history on every sailing in Alaska, Europe, Asia or the Caribbean, according to a press release.

The focal point of Dutch Day will be a themed Dutch Dinner served once per cruise in the main Dining Room, with many dishes also available in the Lido Market. Additionally, Holland America Line’s Orange Party will be held on Dutch Day, and guests can enjoy fresh-made poffertjes in Crow’s Nest Café.

“Holland America Line remains deeply connected to our roots in the Netherlands, and Dutch Day is the perfect way to honor our history through experiences that celebrate the culinary culture of the country,” said Michael Stendebach, vice president of food, beverage and rooms division for Holland America Line. “Our guests appreciate special touches like Daelmans Stroopwafel for turn down or a dish in the dining room that is distinctly Dutch, and we’re excited to expand the cultural experience for an entire day to showcase more of our heritage.”

The special Dutch Dinner features both classic and contemporary Dutch delicacies. The selection of starters features a Bay Shrimp Cocktail with Dutch cocktail sauce, Erwten Soep (Dutch Pea Soup), and Mushroom Cream puff pastry with hollandaise sauce.

Dutch-inspired main course options include Bami Goreng, a stir-fried noodle dish with chicken sate and peanut sauce; Pan-Fried Dover Sole with lemon butter; and Hodge Podge Klapstuk with chateau potatoes. For dessert, options include a Bosche Bol, Tompouce or a slice of traditional Dutch Apple Pie.

In collaboration with Daelmans Stroopwafels, Dutch Day will also feature Stroopwafel Cheesecake for dessert on the dinner menu in the Dining Room and Lido Market and a Stroopwafel Napoleon at tea time. Deal: Holland America Line is offering a "Kids Cruise Free" promotion on select itineraries in 2024. The offer applies to several itineraries including Hawaii , the Caribbean and the Panama Canal; to qualify, children must be 18 or younger and cruising as third and/or fourth guests in the same cabin as adults. As with similar promotions, taxes and port fees are still required for each child's sailing.

Family-friendly perks: Amenities onboard Holland America ships include kids clubs and youth programs, as well as shore excursions oriented to families with little ones in tow. Plenty of stateroom options can also accommodate larger bookings. The Nieuw Statendam and Koningsdam ships, in particular, feature oversized staterooms with beds for four, a large sitting area and a spacious veranda.

Deal: Norwegian Cruise Line lets third and fourth guests cruise free on select itineraries throughout the year. Cruises to which this promotion applies are offered all over the world, including bucket-list destinations like Alaska and the Mediterranean .

Some of the itineraries that qualify for free third and fourth guests also come with complimentary amenities like an unlimited open bar, specialty dining, shore excursions and/or complimentary Wi-Fi. Additionally, some of the itineraries include generous discounts on the total cruise cost , as well as free airfare for a second guest (when booked through the cruise line).

Family-friendly perks: With Norwegian's all-ages kids clubs, family dining, entertainment and activities included in one bundled rate, planning a kid-approved vacation with the cruise line is a breeze. Deal: Costa Cruises may not be as popular as some other cruise lines on our list, but it's a worthwhile option for cruisers looking to sail through Europe, the Middle East or South America. The cruise line allows kids traveling as third or fourth guests to sail for free with two adults in the same cabin, and this promotion applies to passengers ages 2 to 17. This offer is valid on all sailings offered by the line, many of which feature destinations in desirable ports along the Mediterranean such as Barcelona , Marseille and Rome .

Family-friendly perks: Costa Cruises vessels offer abundant family-friendly amenities, from water parks to arcades to mini golf. Kids clubs are available for children ages 3 to 11, and they provide entertainment like arts and crafts, themed parties, and games galore. A teen zone also hosts cruisers ages 12 to 17 who want to mingle, sing karaoke and play group sports when ships aren't in port.

Kids must be the third or fourth guests traveling in the same cabin as their parents (at least two adults) for the deal to be valid; note that any port fees and taxes still apply to children's fares.

Family-friendly perks: MSC Cruises offers a variety of leisure activities and amenities designed specifically for kids. On board, youngsters can take advantage of perks from water parks with slides and swimming pools to Broadway-style shows and interactive dinners. The line also hosts fun family excursions and a "Lego Experience On Board" event on every cruise. New ‘Dutch Day’ on Every Cruise Celebrates Holland America Line’s Heritage with Themed Culinary Experiences

Daelmans Stroopwafel partnership offers a variety of sweet treats, while new special menus and the Orange Party highlight Holland America Line’s rich Dutch history

Seattle, Wash., April 26, 2024 — Holland America Line is introducing a new “Dutch Day” experience that celebrates the cruise line’s more than 150-year-history that began in the Netherlands. Whether sailing in Alaska, Europe, Asia or the Caribbean, many Dutch culinary favorites will be featured on board for the special day.

The centerpiece of Dutch Day will be a themed Dutch Dinner served once per cruise in the main Dining Room, with many of the dishes also offered in the casual Lido Market. Additionally, Holland America Line's popular Orange Party will be held on Dutch Day, and guests can enjoy fresh-made poffertjes in Crow’s Nest Café.  A new partnership with Daelmans Stroopwafel includes delectable desserts featuring the Dutch staple and a Daelmans Stroopwafel turn-down pillow treat in every stateroom.

Culinary traditions run deep in the Netherlands, and the special themed Dutch Dinner in the Dining Room features an extensive menu that includes both classic and contemporary Dutch delicacies. The selection of starters features a Bay Shrimp Cocktail with Dutch cocktail sauce, Erwten Soep (Dutch Pea Soup), and Mushroom Cream puff pastry with hollandaise sauce.

Dutch-inspired main course selections include Bami Goreng, a stir-fried noodle dish with chicken sate and peanut sauce; Pan-Fried Dover Sole with lemon butter; and Hodge Podge Klapstuk with chateau potatoes. For dessert, a Bosche Bol (large, chocolate covered cream puff), Tompouce (Dutch mille-feuille pastry) or a slice of traditional Dutch Apple Pie provide the perfect sweet ending to the meal.

In collaboration with Daelmans Stroopwafels — a family-owned bakery founded in the Netherlands in 1904, renowned for its authentic recipe —Dutch Day will feature Stroopwafel Cheesecake for dessert on the dinner menu in the Dining Room and Lido Market and a Stroopwafel Napoleon at tea time. Select bars will serve a Stroopwafel Liqueur with hints of cinnamon and caramel only on ships in Europe. Additionally, in place of the traditional stateroom turn-down chocolate, guests will find a Daelmans Stroopwafel waiting for them on their pillow.

New in Crow’s Nest Café on all ships, fresh-made poffertjes — a traditional Dutch treat resembling small, fluffy pancakes — will be available daily (not just on Dutch Day) for a nominal charge.

Popular Orange Party Held on Dutch Day

Once per cruise, Holland America Line holds the Orange Party with live music, cocktails and treats, and now it will be held on Dutch Day. The Orange Party pays homage to the company’s Dutch heritage (orange is the color of the Dutch Royal Family, which hails from the House of Orange), and guests are invited to wear orange attire and accessories. During the after-dinner festivities, special orange-themed cocktails are available while servers pass around finger-foods and sweets.

Dutch Day is part of Holland America Line’s programming that offers authentic experiences to immerse guests in the culture, history and traditions of the places visited on each cruise.
