Terdapat cukup banyak kata dalam bahasa Inggris yang memiliki arti sama, tetapi penggunaannya berbeda. Untuk itulah kita tidak boleh sembarangan menggunakan kata-kata tersebut sebagai sinonimi dari satu sama lainnya. Misalnya saja kata “”trip”, “travel”, “tour”, “ dan “journey” .

Sekilas keempat kata ini serupa dan memiliki arti yang cukup sama, yakni “perjalanan”. Kenyataannya, terdapat berbedaan di antara keempatnya. Apa saja perbedaan tersebut? Mari kita cari tahu melalui pembahasan di bawah ini:

“Trip” tergolong ke dalam noun (kata benda) dan verb (kata kerja). Akan tetapi, “trip” dalam konteks “perjalanan” hanya tergolong ke dalam kata benda saja. Oleh karena itu, dalam konteks ini, kita harus mengikuti aturan penggunaan kata benda dalam bahasa Inggris ketika kita ingin menggunakan kata “trip” dalam kalimat atau frasa.

“Trip” didefinisikan oleh voanews.com sebagai “an act of going to another place and returning” (aksi pergi ke tempat lain dan kembali). “Trip” biasanya digunakan untuk merujuk kepada perjalanan singkat yang memiliki tujuan tertentu seperti untuk tujuan bisnis atau bersenang-senang. Contoh:

• She just came back from her business trip. (Dia baru saja kembali dari perjalanan bisnisnya)
• Jack brought me this souvenir on his trip to Ternate. (Jack membawakan saya oleh-oleh ini dalam perjalanannya ke Ternate)
• How was your trip? (Bagaimana perjalananmu?)

 “Trip” sering digunakan dengan kata kerja “go on” atau “take” . Contoh:

• We are going to take a trip to Europe next month. (Kita akan melakukan perjalanan ke Eropa bulan depan)
• I went on a five-day trip to Italy. (Saya melakukan perjalanan lima hari ke Italia)

Kita bisa menggunakan kata-kata seperti “business trip”, “boat trip”, “road trip, “day trip”, dan sebagainya untuk mendeskripsikan jenis perjalanannya.

“Travel” tergolong ke dalam verb (kata kerja) dan noun (kata benda) sehingga cara penggunaannya sama seperti cara penggunaan kata kerja atau kata benda lainnya dalam bahasa Inggris.

“Travel” sebagai kata kerja di dalam Oxford English Dictionary didefinisikan sebagai “go from one place to another, typically over a distance of some length.” (Pergi dari satu tempat ke tempat lain, biasanya melalui jarak jauh). Intinya, “travel” adalah aksi bepergian yang biasanya jarak jauh. Contoh:

• Our manager travels abroad a lot for business. (Manajer kami sering bepergian ke luar negeri untuk tujuan bisnis)
• We travelled to Bali by bus. (Kami bepergian ke Bali dengan bus)
• They travelled thousands of miles. (Mereka bepergian berribu-ribu mil)

Sementara itu, “travel” sebagai kata benda memiliki fungsi untuk mendeskripsikan aktivitas bepergian secara umum. Contoh:

• Travel by train is faster than by bus. (Bepergian dengan kereta lebih cepat dibandingkan dengan bus)
• I love travelling. I hope my future job is one involving a lot of travel. (Saya suka bepergian. Semoga pekerjaan saya di masa depan adalah pekerjaan yang melibatkan banyak perjalanan)

Perlu diketahui bahwa kata “travel” sebagai kata benda jarang digunakan bersama determiner seperti “my”, “our”, “a”, dan sebagainya. Jika kita ingin menggunakan determiner , sebaiknya kita menggunakan “trip” alih-alih “travel” . Contoh:

I’m planning a travel to Germany. (Saya merencanakan bepergian ke Jerman) –> salah seharusnya “I’m planning a trip to German” .

“Tour” termasuk ke dalam verb (kata kerja) dan noun (kata benda). Untuk itu, cara penggunaannya sama seperti cara penggunaan kata kerja atau kata benda lainnya.

Yang membedakan “tour” dengan “trip”, “travel”, dan “journey” adalah “tour” kegiatan perjalanan mengunjungi beberapa tempat. Contoh:

I went on a tour of Australia. (Kami melakukan tur ke Australia) –> menunjukkan bahwa saya bepergian ke berbagai kota atau tempat di Australia. Bukan hanya satu tempat saja di Australia yang saya kunjungi

Berikut adalah contoh penggunaan “tour” sebagai kata kerja:

• Sarah is touring the east of Indonesia. (Sarah sedang tur ke timur Indonesia)
• We decided to tour New York. (Dia memutuskan untuk tur ke New York)
• They want to tour South Africa. (Mereka ingin tur ke Afrika Selatan)

Contoh penggunaan “tour” sebagai kata benda:

• She is on a world tour. (Dia sedang melakukan tur dunia)
• I enjoyed my tour of Bali. (Saya menikmati tur Bali saya)
• Mark is going on a tour of Jakarta. (Mark akan tur ke Jakarta)

“Journey” termasuk ke dalam noun (kata benda). Oleh karena itu, ikutilah aturan penggunaan kata benda ketika kita ingin menggunakan kata “journey” .

“Journey” memiliki dua arti, yakni: 1) perjalanan (biasanya jarak panjang), 2) perjalanan dalam arti kiasan untuk menjelaskan perjalanan atau progress di kehidupan.

Contoh “journey” dalam arti perjalanan secara harfiah:

• The journey took 5 hours. (Perjalanannya menghabiskan waktu 5 jam)
• My journey to work is about an hour. (Perjalanan saya menuju tempat kerja sekitar satu jam)
• We had a pleasant journey to the beach. (Kami mengalami perjalanan menyenangkan ke pantai)

Contoh “journey” dalam arti perjalanan kiasan:

• Taking part in the dance competition is a kind of spiritual journey for me. (Ikut serta dalam kontes menari adalah seperti perjalanan spiritual bagi saya)
• Our journey of knowledge starts from when we were born until we die. (Perjalanan ilmu pengetahuan kita dimulai dari ketika kita lahir sampai kita meninggal)

Beda Home dan House Apa Ya?

Home  dan House  adalah dua kata dalam Bahasa Inggris yang kita sering temui, dan keduanya mempunyai arti yang sama yaitu : Rumah/Kediaman . Namun ternyata keduanya punya pengertian berbeda setelah diteliti. Kalau Home   punya pengertian rumah tinggal yang kita tempati dan itu bisa berupa rumah biasa, apartemen, hotel, rumah kos, bahkan kandang ayam sekalipun. Sedangkan House adalah tipe bangunan baik rumah, hotel, apartemen dan lainnya.

Sejumlah kata yang menggunakan kata Home  antara lain yaitu Hometown   yang berarti kampung halaman, jadi pulang kampung- go hometown .  Lantas Homesick   yang berarti rindu/kangen pada rumah/kediaman yang sudah lama ditinggalkan. Homeless   adalah orang yang tidak punya rumah sedangkan orangnya disebut Homelessness.

Lainnya home sweet home  berarti senang bisa pulang ke rumah lagi (enaknya kembali ke rumah), housework artinya jenis pekerjaan di rumah yang sifatnya membersihkan/merapikan rumah. Homework  artinya pekerjaan sekolah yang diperintahkan guru untuk dikerjakan di rumah. Terakhir make yourself at home adalah ungkapan tuan rumah kepada tamunya untuk merasa nyaman di rumahnya dengan mengatakan “anggap saja rumah sendiri”.

Sedangkan kata House ada beberapa jenis dengan sambungan kata lainnya seperti house speciality yang artinya sebuah keterangan di sebuah restoran yang punya keunggulan tertentu, misalnya kue pie atau pizzanya di resto ini paling enak dan terkenal. Housewine , apa ini? Benar rumah penjualan minuman anggur, namun intinya anggur di kedai ini paling murah harganya. Kalau house music  adalah sejenis music yang memainkan house dan hip hop music/clubbing. Houseparty adalah pesta yang diadakan di rumah, dan terakhir yaitu full house adalah istilah untuk menyebutkan atau menggambarkan tiket suatu pertunjukkan/penampilan atau konser sudah terjual habis/ludes terjual.

• Sedangkan Home  bisa berarti bangunan tempat tinggal seperti house dan juga bisa berarti tempat atau lokasi yang dapat dianggap sebagai tempat untuk tinggal. Anyone But You finally made its Netflix streaming debut, which is exciting news for rom-com fans everywhere. As you watch the movie, you might be wondering where Anyone But You was filmed and if you can visit the breathtaking beaches, cliffs, and other locations in real life.

Loosely adapted from Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing,” Anyone But You stars Glen Powell as Ben, a finance bro who has an incredible first date with Bea (Sydney Sweeney), a law student uncertain about her career. After spending the night, Bea panics and leaves without telling him. When she realizes she made a mistake and returns to his apartment, she overhears Ben saying that she is a “nothing” to him.

Years later, they unexpectedly reunite at a destination wedding in Australia for Bea’s sister, who is marrying Ben’s friend. When their exes show up, they pretend to be a couple—and the rest is history. The film was directed and co-written by Will Gluck, the filmmaker behind rom-coms like Easy A and Friends with Benefits . It was released in December and had an impressive run at the box office, surpassing $88 million domestically and $219 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo .

After its release, the movie went viral on TikTok as audience goers reacted to the film’s credit sequence, which features the cast dancing and singing to Natasha Bedingfield’s nostalgic 2004 hit “Unwritten,” a song highlighted throughout the film. There were also rumors of an off-screen romance between Powell and Sweeney that helped promote the film, as well as the actors’ flirty publicity tour and Sydney Sweeney’s SNL monologue .

Now, Anyone But You is back in the limelight after the film was released on Netflix on April 23, quickly becoming the No. 1 movie on the platform in the U.S. after just one day.

Anyone But You was filmed in parts of Australia around New South Wales and Sydney. Director Will Gluck told The Hollywood Reporter that he wanted the film set in Sydney because he had “really fallen in love with the city” and liked it so much he moved his family there.

“Almost every time you shoot a movie in Sydney, you have to pretend it’s somewhere else and frame out the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. For Anyone But You , I thought, “Why do that?” We actually wrote this movie 100 percent for Sydney — very specific to the destination,” Gluck wrote.

The director continued, “We flew helicopters all over — seeing the city from that vantage point is stunning — and landed one at the Opera House, shut down the Harbour Bridge, filmed at the Queen Victoria Building, and shot for two weeks overlooking Bondi Beach,” he said. “We spent a week on a boat in Sydney Harbour shooting a scene where they’re stranded on a buoy, but you can’t have humans in the water without a shark cage, so we had to have one the whole time. You pinch yourself. It’s so unbelievable we were actually doing these things.”

Many of Anyone But You ’s breathtaking beach scenes were filmed around Palm Beach. Director Will Gluck told THR that one of the best parts of filming was on location in Palm Beach, a suburb in the Northern Beaches.

“Our caravans were parked right on the water, and Glen and Sydney and I decided to live there the whole time. We’d shoot all day and all the crew would go home, then we’d jump in the water and have a swim, go to our trailers and have dinner sitting outside,” he said. “It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world, and you normally wouldn’t be allowed to sleep there. It was probably the most fun I’ve ever had filming.”

Several luxurious homes and rental properties were showcased last week at the Nashville Downtown Partnership's 2024 Home Tour. The nonprofit's yearly event brings in visitors from all over Middle Tennessee to take a peek inside downtown Nashville residences.

The home tour is meant to promote downtown living, share design tips and offer participants a chance to see the city from new angles. Rental apartments from the brand new Prima building at Paseo South Gulch were featured on this year's tour. The mixed use development on 8th Avenue was built by SomeraRoad.

A new building called Pullman at Gulch Union showcased model units for luxury condos soon to hit the market. Prices for those condominiums start at $400,000.

According to the Nashville Downtown Partnership, 17,630 people currently live downtown in an average home size of 813 square feet. More than 4,000 units are currently under construction and at least 13,000 are in planning stages.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse's "Love Earth" tour coming to Colorado this summer

Neil Young is making his return to the Denver area this summer after not having played in Colorado since 2016.

He and Crazy Horse are set to play Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre in Greenwood Village on July 31. The last time Young played in Colorado was in October 2016 in Telluride, where he owns a barn he rebuilt. That barn is also home to a recording studio he called "Studio in the Clouds" where he recorded his 2019 album, "Colorado."

That album marked the reunion of Young and Crazy Horse after a 7-year hiatus. The group has played together for a combined 50 years.

‘Forbidden Broadway’ Scraps Summer Broadway Run, Citing Crowded Season

In a sign that there are not enough investors and ticket buyers to sustain all of the Broadway shows now onstage and in the works, the producers of “Forbidden Broadway” said Friday that they were canceling a planned summer run.

The scrapped production, “ Forbidden Broadway on Broadway: Merrily We Stole a Song ,” was announced in February and was to be the first Broadway venture for the satirical revue, which has been performed periodically since 1982, mostly Off Broadway but also on tour. The show, consisting of comedic sketches that parody Broadway hits (and misses), has been frequently rewritten to remain reasonably timely and topical; the Broadway run was to feature a number of Sondheim spoofs, reflecting the heightened interest in his work since his death.

In a statement, the producers, Ryan Bogner, Victoria Lang and Tracey Stroock McFarland , called the move a postponement, and cited the volume of offerings on Broadway — there are currently 36 shows running, 12 of which opened in a nine-day stretch before the Tony-eligibility season ended Thursday night.

“The Broadway landscape is enormously crowded at this moment,” the producers’ statement said, “and while we adore Forbidden Broadway, we are disappointed that the show will not open at the Hayes on Broadway this summer.”

The show, written by Gerard Alessandrini, was to begin previews July 15 and to open Aug. 5 at the Helen Hayes Theater, and was to be capitalized for $3.2 million, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. It is not clear if the producers had successfully raised all that money, and ticket sales, which began earlier this month, had been slow.

“Without getting into the details of the financials or sales, it is self evident by looking at the current offerings on Broadway and their sales that in this incredibly crowded environment without recent precedent, the title would not have been served by launching at this time,” the producers said in a written answer to questions about the show’s economics.

This is the second show to cancel a Broadway production this year; in February, the producers of a planned run of Rob Madge’s “My Son’s a Queer (But What Can You Do?)” announced that they were postponing that production less than three weeks before previews were to begin.

As for Madge, the performer is planning to take “My Son’s a Queer” back to the Edinburgh Fringe, this summer . But first, next month Madge is planning a show in London, reflecting on the Broadway disappointment. The title, of course, is “ Regards to Broadway .”

Miles Russell, 15, ready for TOUR-sanctioned debut at LECOM Suncoast Classic

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – Miles Russell is too young for a driver’s license, but he outdrove his playing partners with ease Tuesday at the LECOM Suncoast Classic.

Russell, the world’s top-ranked junior golfer, will make his PGA TOUR-sanctioned debut this week on a sponsor exemption, roughly a four-hour drive from his hometown of Jacksonville Beach, Florida.

Russell, 15, is a high-school freshman who began online schooling in eighth grade. The smooth-swinging left-hander got ahead on coursework in recent days (classes include geometry, Earth science, world history and geography) so he can focus on competing at Lakewood National Golf Club’s Commander course. This isn’t a ceremonial start, as Russell has displayed high-end talent and skill across a schedule of big-time junior golf events. He surpassed Tiger Woods last fall as the youngest AJGA Boys Junior Player of the Year, and he nearly Monday qualified for the PGA TOUR’s Puerto Rico Open last month – falling in a playoff for the final spot.

A junior star’s first TOUR-sanctioned start becomes a time capsule in future years. Jordan Spieth finished T16 at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson in 2010 (at age 16), and a 17-year-old Scottie Scheffler finished T22 at the same event four years later. Both, like Russell, are past AJGA Players of the Year and made their TOUR-sanctioned debut in their home state. The youthful energy radiates across time, and Russell looks forward to a similar experience this week in Florida.

“I don’t know what to expect, but I’d love to make the cut and who knows, maybe have a good weekend and see where it puts me,” Russell said Tuesday.

Russell was introduced to golf at age 2 by his dad and grandpa, “whacking it around the house … and it’s been history ever since,” he said. “Took me out to the course and went through a bucket of balls in 3 minutes, and it was just fun.”

Russell played baseball and soccer in his formative years, but he eased those sports back to focus on golf – he still enjoys some pickleball and tennis at times, but golf is his purest sporting love. He first attended THE PLAYERS Championship at age 2 (TPC Sawgrass is just 10 minutes from home) and said he’s attended that event as a fan each year since.

“I’ve always wanted to be able to do it," Russell said of eventually pursuing professional golf. "To have the chance to do it would be even cooler, and then to be able to do it would be awesome. I think it would just be cool to do something I love, and there’s not much more I love than this.”

His resume suggests he’s poised to do just that.

Russell was named the 2023 AJGA Player of the Year on Nov. 2 (a day after turning 15) in a year that included winning the Junior PGA Championship (by seven strokes), Junior PLAYERS Championship (carding a second-round 66 at TPC Sawgrass’ PLAYERS Stadium Course, en route to becoming the event’s youngest winner) and representing the United States at the Junior Ryder Cup.

Russell has worked with instructor Ramon Bescansa, whom he describes as both a swing coach and a skills coach, since age 6 or 7. Bescansa, a former Korn Ferry Tour member, will caddie for his student in his Korn Ferry Tour debut.

When asked about TOUR player comparisons that come to mind, Bescansa mentioned reigning Open champion Brian Harman, noting their elite hands, short game and intuition.

“He was already incredible when I first started working with him,” Bescansa said of Russell. “He had a golf IQ that’s not normal for such a young age. It’s been so much fun. I was able to not only help him with his swing, but teaching him how to play golf, play all the shots; he already had a huge understanding and he was like a sponge, a lot of teaching was done with him and a club, and try to do it.”

Russell says he’s more of a feel player than technical, and his instructor concurs. Bescansa said a large part of their work relates to tempo and being synced up. That will become especially paramount as Russell’s body continues to change.

“He’s only 15 and he’s still growing; every time I see him, he’s hitting it farther,” said Bescansa, noting that Russell has reached 112-113 mph of swing speed (which will likely increase in future years).

Russell made waves in the professional golf sphere by narrowly missing at Puerto Rico Open’s Monday qualifier, as he made bogey at No. 18 before falling in a 4-for-1 playoff won by Korn Ferry Tour member Evan Harmeling. (Harmeling proceeded to top-10 in Puerto Rico, his first TOUR start, to earn a spot in the Valspar Championship.)

In a twist, Russell and Harmeling often compete in chipping competitions around their hometown Atlantic Beach Country Club – Russell also often tests his skills against TOUR pros Vince Covello, Raul Pereda, Russell Knox, Philip Knowles and others. Being around professional golfers has accelerated Russell’s development into a world-class junior player, concurred Russell and his instructor, befitting of Russell’s “sponge” ethos.

That was also the case Tuesday, when Russell played an 18-hole practice round with veteran pros Roberto Diaz, Sam Saunders and Rob Oppenheim – who finished runner-up at the Club Car Championship at The Landings Golf & Country Club earlier this month. (After being informed that Russell was the No. 1-ranked junior, Oppenheim quipped that if he wasn’t No. 1, that could foreshadow trouble for veteran pros at large.) Those three have combined for 907 starts between the PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour.

Russell might embody the game’s future, but his veteran playing partners didn’t shy away from offering instruction in the present. On the par-4 11th tee, the group discussed how the hole might play in certain wind directions and various angles to consider on the short par 4 that could become drivable on a downwind day. As they strode up the fairway, Diaz shared nuances and a perspective accrued through a 15-year pro career.

“These guys have been great,” Russell said. “Certainly watching what they’ve doing; asked them some questions … they’ve kind of been showing me some secrets.”

Russell also spent some time at THE PLAYERS last month with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, whom he said “was such a nice guy and such a great guy.” Scheffler famously debuted at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson in 2014, finishing T22 with his sister Callie on the bag – and making a hole-in-one in the third round.

“Scheffler sounded like a PGA TOUR veteran Sunday, analyzing his experience and making a mental checklist of everything he wants to fix,” wrote ESPN at the time.

Russell too sounded like a veteran Tuesday discussing his week ahead, his quiet confidence backed up by his laundry list of accomplishments. The No. 1 junior wasn’t in the business of making bold proclamations, but he projected a sense of expectation to compete this week. When asked about highlight golf moments so far, he mentioned the Junior Ryder Cup and holing out on the 72nd hole at the Junior PGA Championship, but also …

“Maybe we’ll make one this week,” he said after completing Tuesday’s practice round, as he headed to the range for some further work. “Who knows?”

Fletcher on healing, her new album and being back on tour

NPR's Juana Summers speaks with Cari Fletcher, who goes by the stage name FLETCHER, about her newest album "In Search Of The Antidote" and what it's like to be back on tour.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "TWO THINGS CAN BE TRUE" )

FLETCHER: (Singing) Did we take it too far? Maybe.

JUANA SUMMERS, HOST:

Last spring Carrie Fletcher realized something was wrong - like, more than just the stress of a worldwide concert tour, a deep fatigue that caused long-term concern for her singing voice as well.

FLETCHER: When I had to take the tour down and I saw, you know, applauses get quiet and social media get quiet and then all of the things, you're really forced to, like, look at yourself in the mirror and really decide and see what, you know, your worth is outside of all of those things. Like, there was a lot of silence.

SUMMERS: Turns out it was Lyme disease, and so Carrie, who goes by Fletcher onstage, found herself facing a major physical recovery and a lot of unprocessed mental health to work through. She went back to her hometown in New Jersey, and with all that downtime, she started writing a new album to be called "In Search Of The Antidote."

FLETCHER: (Singing) I get high. I get high. I get low. I get low. You're my dopamine state. You're my sanity dose. I get high.

SUMMERS: A year later, Fletcher is out on the road again, singing this new album to her loyal fans. We caught her earlier this week on a day off in Germany, and she was stoked about being back.

FLETCHER: To return back to a sold-out tour with all of these beautiful fans and, you know, like, scream-singing these songs back to me that - some of which I wrote from such a place of desperation but also a place of, like, hope and happiness and love and excitement for the future and - I pinch myself all the time when I get to a new country that I've never even been to before and they're singing word for word with me. It's like - it's insane that this is my job.

SUMMERS: Is there a favorite moment that you could share from the tour that you're on now that really just drives it home for you?

FLETCHER: People have been bringing crazy signs to the show. I have a song called "Becky's So Hot," and there's a point where I'm, like, grinding on a mic stand. And so the fans started doing this thing where they're like, can I be the human mic stand?

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "BECKY'S SO HOT")

FLETCHER: (Singing) Are you in love like we were? If I were you, I'd probably keep her - makes me want to hit her when I see her 'cause Becky's so hot in your vintage T-shirt.

There was a sign yesterday that said, truth or dare. And I saw it, and I picked dare. And then she folded the card over again, and it was like, I dare you to let me be your mic stand tonight. Somebody came to a concert dressed up as a microphone to the concert, and I was like, the commitment is real.

SUMMERS: I mean, this album - it's got rage and joy and lust and mess, which is something that you have certainly never shied away from mining, like in the lead single, "Eras Of Us," which I have heard is about running into your ex at Taylor Swift's Eras tour - true story?

FLETCHER: Yes. Truth or dare - that is the truth.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "ERAS OF US")

FLETCHER: (Singing) It's nice to meet you.

Yeah. I had not seen my ex since the day that we had broken up, and we bumped into each other at the Taylor Swift concert. You know, to be at this show where both of us were, like, screaming these songs to an artist that has narrated so many of my breakups, so many of my romances - I just got hit with, you know, a wave of emotion of all of the eras of us, of her and I.

FLETCHER: (Singing) A story of love, stealing the air right from my lungs. Girl of my dreams, forever we're young. Remember it just the way it was, the eras of us.

And I think that's something I always really try to do with my music - is just to drop people into a really specific scene, into a really specific moment. And it's one of my favorite songs I've ever written. It just feels like a story.

SUMMERS: I wonder if you can tell us the story behind one of the songs on the album, "Doing Better," because that song's gotten stuck in my head - this idea of what better really is, why better feels worse.

FLETCHER: Yeah. Wow. I actually have a song on my last album - I have a song called "Better Version," and the lyric ends with, and now some other person's going to get the better version...

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG "BETTER VERSION")

FLETCHER: (Singing) Of me.

...Of me. Just in the last couple months, I was reflecting on, OK, well, what is the better version of me doing? And is she actually doing better? And I wrote a song called "Doing Better" that just really reflects on all the ways of, like, so many of the ways that my career had taken off...

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "DOING BETTER")

FLETCHER: (Singing) I'm doing better. I don't know if you remember when I told you in September that you wouldn't recognize me.

...Getting to do all these, like, incredible, incredible things and perform in all these places. And I felt awful.

FLETCHER: (Singing) I felt like I was flying. I felt the stars aligning. I always thought that if I ever got this high, I'd like it. I'm doing better. I've been looking for my center, but my tummy still hurts. Why does better feel worse?

We're kind of sold this narrative of, like, you know, we should have this amount of success by this amount of age and this type of relationship and this degree and this job. And this idea, this dream of better, you know, that we all have - it doesn't feel good. And it's actually, like, the deeper stuff, the stuff that, like, we don't put on display is, like, where so much of the antidote really is.

(SOUNDBITE OF FLETCHER SONG, "GIRL OF MY DREAMS")

SUMMERS: I don't want to get too messy here on public radio, but I do have to ask you about the ladies. I mean, your songs - people call them queer love anthems and queer anthems. And I'm curious how much you think about where your music fits within the sphere of queer pop music. Is that something that's, like, front of mind for you at all?

FLETCHER: When I first started writing, I was, like, really just embarking on my journey with my sexuality and just, you know, when I started talking about all of it for the first time and just falling in love with a girl for the first time. And I never really set out with a specific mission of, like, oh, I need the music to be categorized as this. It was just like, I just need to be free.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "GIRL OF MY DREAMS")

FLETCHER: (Singing) I'm on heartbreak No. 4. Tequila doesn't hit no more. I got a new rebound. I'm falling for me now.

When I think about where my music fits in terms of, you know, the scope of music, it's just - it's meant to go to whoever needs to find it. And my queer journey has been so embraced by the community, and I couldn't ask for anything more. But it's also just - you know, it's also so deeply universal, like, this idea of, like, belonging and...

SUMMERS: Right.

FLETCHER: ...Experiencing love for the first time.

SUMMERS: I mean, that's one of the things that strikes me, right? Whether you are dating a woman or married to a man, there's something really beautiful and universal with the way that you describe these intense and heartfelt and, at times, overwhelming feelings when it comes to love and lust and relationships and all of the spectrum in between there. It's something that works for everybody.

FLETCHER: Oh, I love that. Thank you. Yeah. It's - for me, it's always just - I've never wanted to - anyone to feel, like, alienated from the music, from the emotions, from the feelings. Like, I felt alienated for so long as a kid, you know? I just felt so in my own world and lonely and so sad. And to just - to find that sense of home, like, in myself and in my own music...

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "PRETENDING")

FLETCHER: (Singing) I say goodnight as if my heart isn't wrenching.

And that's really what it is for me. It's just, like, the feelings are universal. We all navigate it. We all go through it, no matter how you identify, like, orientation-wise, gender, you know, sexuality. It's - we're human.
