Founded in 2021 in Miami, The Vets now offers in-home personalized vet care for dogs and cats in 18 major metropolitan locations (covering over 240 cities) across the U.S. Their licensed veterinarians provide high-quality clinical care in the comfort of your home. Services include wellness exams, vaccinations, sick visits, home lab tests, ultrasound (in some locations), dermatology, microchipping, and more. The Vets are not able to accommodate emergency care.

You can schedule an appointment online for a home visit on Mondays through Saturdays during typical operating hours, and if you want to use the same vet for every appointment, customer support can arrange that for you. They also offer a Total Wellness Plan for $99 per month that covers wellness checkups, vaccinations, routine annual lab tests, preventative treatment, and telehealth advice.

BetterVet Review

Founded in 2020, BetterVet is a larger organization compared to The Vets, with more locations across the U.S. and more services offered. BetterVet currently serves 26 metropolitan areas with plans to expand to many more locations in the near future. Their licensed vets offer in-home services for wellness exams, vaccinations, sick visits, blood work, X-rays (in some locations), electrocardiogram (ECG), euthanasia, microchipping, and more. BetterVet is unable to handle emergency care.

You can schedule an appointment via their website. Availability is Mondays through Saturdays during typical vet operating hours. BetterVet also offers telehealth appointments for anyone in the states where they’re licensed to give advice. You can join their Wellness Club for $19 per month, which gives you access to free travel fees. For an additional $70 per month, their premium Wellness Plan covers two wellness or sick visits per year, vaccinations, routine blood work, and more.

If BetterVet and The Vets aren’t available in your area, you may have some local services to choose from. Fortunately, thousands of small regional companies and independent veterinary practitioners offer in-home vet care in the U.S.

In the event the emergency needs to be handled by a specialty center, we will guide you on the best choice for your pet’s extensive care.  

We do not see after hours emergencies and recommend that you contact the after hours emergency facility nearest to you listed below.

In general, what’s an emergency?

• Any problem that persists longer than 24 hours.
• Any problem that worsens over several hours.
• Any systemic problems such as lethargy, loss of appetite, weakness and fever.
• Body temperature less than 100°F or greater than 104°F.
• Any indication that more than one body system (GI, urinary, neurological) is affected.

Ever wondered how at-home appointment works? Mobile vet visits are different from regular visits to a clinic. We’ve prepared a short overview of the process to get you started.

Suitable for : Regular wellness checkups and sickness treatment for puppies and kittens, adult cats and dogs, and geriatric patients; pets sensitive to the traditional clinic setting. 

Not suitable for : emergency treatment and visits that require imaging such as x-rays or MRIs. Hard to define if you are having an emergency? Read our emergency guide to evaluate the situation.

Appointment booking

Select a suitable time slot at booking.thevets.com to schedule your home visit. Once you complete the booking process, you will receive a confirmation email with the details of the time and date of your upcoming appointment.

Initial phone assessment

After your appointment is scheduled, one of our Booking Agents will reach out to learn more about your pet and the reason for a visit to tailor the visit plan to your specific needs. If there are any particular behavioral concerns, parking or travel instruction, or any other issue that our veterinarians need to be aware of, please let us know to ensure that our team provides the highest quality of care. ​

Follow the pre-appointment recommendations sent to your email to ensure that the visit is smooth and successful. Please note that every appointment requires prior confirmation with our Booking Agents or via SMS reply to the confirmation SMS that you will receive before the visit.

Unfortunately, accidents do happen. When a medical emergency befalls our furry friends, pet parents may find it difficult to make rational decisions, especially if something occurs during the middle of the night. That’s why it’s crucial to have an emergency plan in place—before you need it.

Finding 24-Hour Emergency Care for Your Pet

Talk to your veterinarian about an emergency protocol. Does your vet provide 24-hour service or does he or she work with an emergency clinic in the area? Some practices have multiple veterinarians on staff who rotate on-call services after hours. Check to see if your primary care vet has partners who might answer an emergency call. It’s also a smart idea to keep the name, number and address of your local emergency clinic tacked to the refrigerator or stored in your cell phone for easy access.

Signs Your Pet May Need Emergency Care

Your dog may need emergency care because of severe trauma—caused by an accident or fall—choking, heatstroke, an insect sting, household poisoning or other life-threatening situation. Here are some signs that emergency care is needed:

• Rapid breathing
• Weak or rapid pulse
• Change in body temperature
• Difficulty standing
• Apparent paralysis
• Loss of consciousness
• Excessive bleeding

Pets who are severely injured may act aggressively toward their pet parents, so it’s important to first protect yourself from injury.

For dogs: Approach your dog slowly and calmly; kneel down and say his name. If the dog shows aggression, call for help. If he’s passive, fashion a makeshift stretcher and gently lift him onto it. Take care to support his neck and back in case he’s suffered any spinal injuries.

For cats: Gently place a blanket or towel over the cat’s head to prevent biting; then slowly lift the cat and place her in an open-topped carrier or box. Take care to support the cat’s head and avoid twisting her neck in case she’s suffered a spinal injury.

Once you feel confident and safe transporting your pet, immediately bring him to an emergency care facility. Ask a friend or family member to call the clinic so the staff knows to expect you and your pet.

First Aid Treatments to Perform At Home

Most emergencies require immediate veterinary care, but first aid methods may help you stabilize your pet for transportation.

• If your pet is suffering from external bleeding due to trauma , try elevating and applying pressure to the wound.
• If your pet is choking , place your fingers in his mouth to see if you can remove the blockage.
• If you’re unable to remove the foreign object , perform a modified Heimlich maneuver by giving a sharp rap to his chest, which should dislodge the object.

Performing CPR on Your Pet

CPR may be necessary if your pet remains unconscious after you have removed the choking object. First check to see if he’s breathing. If not, place him on his side and perform artificial respiration by extending his head and neck, holding his jaws closed and blowing into his nostrils once every three seconds. (Ensure no air escapes between your mouth and the pet’s nose.) If you don’t feel a heartbeat, incorporate cardiac massage while administering artificial respiration—three quick, firm chest compressions for every respiration—until your dog resumes breathing on his own.

What To Do If Your Pet Eats Something Poisonous

If you suspect your pet has ingested a toxic substance, please call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center ’s 24-hour hotline at (888) 426-4435. Trained toxicologists will consider the age and health of your pet, what and how much he ate, and then make a recommendation—such as whether to induce vomiting—based on their assessment.

The staff at the Fort Mill, SC clinic are the most caring, sensitive and understanding people. I thank them from the bottom of my heart for their compassion towards me and my mom as we mourned our lil fur baby.

I had unexpectedly obtained a new puppy who wasn’t in the greatest shape and I wanted him examined before exposing him to my other two dogs. I was immediately brought back to the exam room and an estimate was discussed after an initial brief exam was completed before any diagnostic testing was completed. The staff and doctor were professional, thorough and more importantly so gentle with my new little one. I was expecting my bill prior to the experience to be extremely inflated considering it was an emergency vet but pricing was very reasonable. Highly recommend 👍🏼

Cannot say enough great things about this place. After a scary day of tummy issues for my pup, i brought him in. Staff is friendly, informative, and gave me peace of mind regarding my pets sickness. Thanks to Google, we brought our sweet Murphy here who had been hit by a car. They quickly took us back to access him. Luckily his injuries were minor. This place is open extended hours and takes walk ins, which is very convenient. They got our dog fixed up from a weekend case of the runs. So convenient to have them here.

Being a pet parent is not only about fun games and cuddling with your dog. It is also about being responsible and making decisions about what’s best for your pooch and you.

Beyond the visit, treatment, and any diagnostic tests, there are a few additional expenses that you might need to pay.

Any medications that your vet prescribes for your dog—oral medications or even topical treatments—will need to be paid for separately.

There’s the possibility of equipment, particularly after surgery, such as e-collars and vests, so your pup doesn’t chew and lick the wound.

There are specialized credit cards that you can consider. It enables you to pay for your dog’s and your own medical needs. You’ll just need to make sure the emergency clinic and your regular vet will accept the card.

• Plan a Budget

Consider setting up a savings account meant for any dog medical emergencies. You can create a new account and make a point of adding money every week or month.

If you put about $100 in the account every month when your dog is a puppy, by the time, they’re 2 years old, you might have saved up around $2,000. Only use this money for actual emergencies, rather than routine visits. This way, you’re saving money that could end up saving your dog’s life.

• Virtual Vet

If your dog isn’t exhibiting emergency symptoms but you feel as though you can’t wait for an appointment in a few days, you can try speaking to a virtual veterinarian. This could be done by phone or through video.

Just be sure to read everything and figure out which company and which plan will work best for you and your dog. How much you pay every month will also depend on the size, age, breed, and sex of your dog.

You should also always plan ahead for any potential emergencies. As long as you feed your dog high-quality food, ensure that they have constant access to clean and fresh water, and visit the vet once a year, you’re taking good care of your pup. You should also give them plenty of love, exercise, and playtime.

While paying a chunk of money every month might not necessarily fit into your budget, it’s probably worth it in the long run. This way, if something disastrous does happen to your pup, you won’t be forced to decide between treatment that you can’t afford and keeping your dog for a few more years.

So many aspects of these scenarios do depend on your dog’s situation, so spend the time looking at the best pet insurance companies and trying out the free quotes. It just might be worth it.
