What To Wear in Hong Kong? 25 Outfits and Packing List
What To Wear In Hong Kong – Knowing what to wear on a vacation is a substantial question to be wary of when packing your outfits. Keeping a pragmatic approach when it comes to your outfits is key.
Packing essentials must adequately respond to the current weather conditions while staying in touch with the city’s fashion trends.
What to Pack?
Summer outfits, casual outfits (best picks for disneyland), winter outfits, formal outfits, work trip outfits.
Flying over to Hong Kong for a nice vacation, you’ll need to have more than just your average traveling gear.
Be on the lookout for humid weather forecasts because it does tend to get rainy there (during June, July and August) so you can either take an umbrella with you or buy one from the local markets.
Lastly, try keeping your outfits light and airy, because it is always advisable to value comfort over all else while traveling.
Here are some items that I recommend carrying:
- Comfy Pants or Cargos : On-the-go utility pants will be your best friend so ditch the high-end fashionable denim and try styling comfier pants.
- Apt Footwear: Be mindful of the shoes you pack up with you because there will certainly be a lot of walking. A pair of sandals and joggers will be an all-time need so be sure to bring those along.
- Beachwear: Try keeping one piece with greater coverage when packing for the beach. Prioritize modesty and comfort when doing so.
- Light shirts to beat the heat: For summers, be sure to pack up light airy tops because temperatures tend to reach incredible heights in the region.
- Raincoats: Keeping a raincoat with you in case of unprecedented rains is a great idea since a foreign city won’t be easy to navigate right away. So pack 1-2 rainy day outfits.
- Dresses: They are perfect for styling and good for a rigorous day too.
25 – Long Mustard Sundress
Sundresses are ideal for a hot summer day filled with light activities.
A long mustard sundress would be a perfect fit for a tourist’s day in Hong Kong. Not only would it be totally stylish but it will help you beat the heat and keep you comfy throughout the day.
Style the dress with a pair of shades and some sneakers and you are all set to explore the streets!
24 – Red Skirt With White Top And Sun Hat
Sheltering yourself from the sweltering sun should be a priority.
Be mindful of packing sunscreen with you but packing a sunhat would do you great wonders too. Not only will they keep you from being sunburnt but also help accessorize your outfit.
This outfit inspiration has a red floral maxi skirt styled with a pair of white sneakers and a white top to match.
Add a brown boho bag spacious enough to carry your tourist essentials and a black sunhat to help shade you from the sun.
23 – Neutral Floral Midi Dress
A neutral floral dress is a great look to wear both during the day on one of your tourist conquests but also works perfectly for formal dinners. Style the fit with gold accessories to make it formal or a pair of boots and a hat.
22 – Floral Dress
If you are planning to make a stop by the beach, be sure to wear a fit that isn’t too revealing. Valuing their culture should be a priority when it comes to outfits.
In this outfit, we bring you the right amount of modesty blended with fashion. Try a black and white floral midi dress. Not only does this outfit scream beach vibes, but it also keeps you protected from the harsh sun.
You’ll need a lot of casual outfits, for sightseeing, ferry rides, eating or drinking out and also for your trip to Disneyland . Here are some options you can consider:
21 – Sweatpants with Matching Top
20 – Shirt Dress with Scarf
19 – Don’t Forget the Headband
You can take your own or buy one at the spot, but Disneyland pictures are usually incomplete without a cute headband.
18 – Basic Beige Pants With Blue Top And Sneakers
Take it from the queen of fashion when it comes to traveling outfits. Nothing better than light, comfy, and easy-going outfits to wear while traveling to a foreign country, especially if you really want to enjoy the experience thoroughly.
A pair of basic beige pants with a light blue top can always be upgraded with accessories. Add a sporty pair of black Adidas and shades to match and you are all set to tour in style.
17 – Basic Baggy T Shirt With Green Pants
Throw in a few baggy pieces, they’ll keep you both in style and comfort. Try pairing a basic graphic t-shirt with a pair of thrifted baggy green pants. Add crocs for shoes, an essential tool for comfort and a hassle-free day.
A black bag to match your crocs and you are ready to blend right into Hong Kong fashion while remaining true to your own style.
16 – Pastel Pink Sundress With White Button Down Top
When you are allowed limited luggage, it is a battle to choose what to take with you. Playing with the multi-dimensionality of pieces in times like these is crucial. White button-downs are timeless and universal. They can be styled effortlessly with nearly anything.
In this outfit inspiration, we bring you a look where the white button-down is layered over a satin pink dress. Not only will it keep you in the safe semi-formal zone but also have you strolling comfortably throughout the day. Add a pair of Yeezy slides and you have yourself a perfectly stylish tourist outfit.
15 – Sage Skirt With Yellow Top And Sneakers
Going all Y2k fashion on your trip might just save you a lot of trouble. Keeping an assortment of baggy yet trendy clothing items that you can interchange with one another will be all you need.
Skirts may sound inconvenient to wear as an exploring tourist but going for a baggy parachute skirt will work wonders for you in terms of smart packing. You can style the skirt with joggers and a basic t-shirt to match, and you are all set.
14 – Pink Tank Top with Basic Black Pants
Packing a pair of basic baggy black pants will win you a new outfit every day on your vacation. A solid pink tank top to go with the pants and a statement corduroy bag in pink to tie it all up.
You’ll have yourself a look based on multifarious pieces that all come together to keep things functional in style.
13 – Striped Black and White Top With Brown Pants
Neutral earthy tones are the perfect blend of colors for you to wear. If you pack smart, you could whip out a pair of solid brown basic high-waisted pants and create a perfect fit.
Throw on a black and white striped top, and a pair of sneakers to keep you light on your feet and you are all set for a day filled with adventure, all the while keeping up with Hong Kong fashion trends.
12 – Cross Body Fanny Pack With Oversized Baggy Shirt
Packing a cross-body fanny pack with you will save you a lot of worries. It’ll keep your things in order, fastened safely to you, within seconds of reach. And it has outstanding styling potential. Here’s how.
Crossbody bags are great when it comes to accessorizing basic loose-fit outfits. Pair an oversized baggy graphic t-shirt with baggy parachute pants. A pair of sneakers to go with the outfit and you are all set in a quick, easy-to-put-together, and practical outfit.
11 – Pink Addidas with Neutral Baggy Outfit
Try packing a pair of baggy hiking shorts that can always be styled with a basic y2k top. The baggier and the longer the shorts, the better.
Add a cross-body bag to carry your necessities and a pair of contrasting pink Adidas to tie it all together for a long day.
10 – Blue Button Down With Cream White Pants
Keeping a range of button-downs in different shades will keep your looks modest and diverse. A light, airy, and baggy blue button-down can be styled over a tank top in your shade of choice. Pair it with white parachute pants to keep things breezy and coy.
9 – Don’t Forget Your Sneakers When Visiting Tian Tan Buddha
For visiting Tian Tan Buddha, Lantau Island, you’ll need a casual outfit but more importantly, you’ll need really comfortable shoes as a lot of walking and stair climbing will be involved.
8 – Dressing Up for the Hong Kong Skyline
You must see the city’s stunning skyline on your trip. Some good places to see it are Victoria Peak’s peak tower and Ritz Carlton’s bar. It’s best to wear something casual for it like a skirt outfit, shorts or maxi dress. Do keep a jacket in case it gets chilly.
7 – Grey Sweater Vest and Baggy Denims
If your trip is during winter time, it shouldn’t be too much trouble to pack because temperatures rarely fall below 15 degrees. Pack light and add some sweater vests.
Keeping denim is a great idea as long as they are breathable. A grey sweater vest with a white half-sleeve top and a pair of loose-fit denim will keep you warm and stylish in Hong Kong’s mild wintertime.
6 – Dark Sea Green Sweat Suit
Sweat suits are effectively warm and comfortable. In this outfit inspiration, the model sports a deep sea green sweat suit. Style your look with an edgy bold bag and a matching pair of shoes and you are all set.
5 – Striped Top And Pants With Tote Bag
Flapper pants are a great choice to add to your packing list. Not only are they appealing to the eye and very in the now but will also keep you at ease.
A striped shirt in black and white to go with your flapper pants with pressed creases running down them make for a great outfit. Add a vintage tote bag and conquer the adventurous day ahead of you!
It’s a good ideas to pack at least 1-2 formal outfits for your trip – you can wear them to any fancy dinner or when visiting one of the palaces. I personally love wearing formal dresses to museums when traveling because the pictures there turn out amazing.
Pro tip: Most Hong Kong museums have free entries on Wednesdays so plan accordingly.
4 – Satin Silk Skirt With Doc Martins
Packing separate accessories with each outfit will be the least impractical approach when it comes to packing. Keep your shoe list concise and practical.
A satin green skirt with a basic white tank top styled beautifully with comfortable doc martins that will go easy on your feet for the entire day and night out. Not only is this outfit comfortable but also fit for formal occasions you might need to attend.
3 – Blue Button Down With Maroon Pants
Basic solid pieces can always be glammed up to fit your needs. You can take your outfit from a basic one to a formal one with just jewelry. Dainty gold or silver jewelry is light on the luggage but does wonders for your fit.
Style a blue button-down with solid deep maroon pants. Keep the shirt half tucked in for a trendier look and style with gold jewelry and you are set for the night!
2 – Maroon Top With White Pants
If you’re on a work trip, it is imperative you keep a formal outfit with you. Doing that while remaining within the luggage weight required of you might come as a challenge. But we have just the outfit inspiration for you!
Pieces like a maroon top with detailed cutwork near the neckline are multi-faceted and can be styled in multiple ways and not just once. Add a pair of white pants and some comfortable pull-on shoes and you are all set.
1 – Blazer Over Denim Jeans And Striped Top
Blazers are a great way to turn a casual outfit into a work outfit. So be sure to add a blazer to your packing list because it can be styled effortlessly and come out looking flawlessly stylish.
Layer a blazer over any of your casual day outfits. A brown blazer on top of a black and white striped top paired with loose-fit denim jeans makes for a ultra-stylish, and formal outfit. Accessorize with dainty jewelry pieces to bring in the beauty of detail.

What Should I Wear in Hong Kong?
The most important factors in planning and packing for Hong Kong are the activities you’ll be doing on your trip AND the weather.
Always, always, always check the weather forecast before your trip. Once you’ve researched the weather, you can focus on creating a capsule travel wardrobe , which should easily fit in a carryon suitcase with the help of packing cubes to compress your clothing.

Hong Kong Style
Hong Kong is one of the most cosmopolitan and high-tech cities in Asia. It is a center for business, information, finance, freight, and trade. A myriad of international companies have their Asia-Pacific corporate headquarters in Hong Kong and this brings with it a steady stream of international expats. Locals and expats alike set a high standard for clothing choices.
Because of the business culture, money is a huge driving force and wealth is a virtue. There are a plethora of designer labels found in glittering ultra-luxe malls. If you are in the market for luxury brands, Hong Kong is the place to shop for them–tax-free and authentic.
If the real thing is not in your budget and you don’t mind haggling, you might consider getting yourself a “handbag copy” at one of the many outdoor markets (Temple Street, Ladies Market, or Stanley Market) or for a better bargain and higher quality, venture north across the border to nearby Shenzhen.
From elaborate carvings of feng shui ornaments to simple pendants and thick bangles, you’ll see the glimmer of green jade everywhere in Hong Kong. Believed to carry with it the energy of luck, wisdom, good fortune, and strength, jade is the most beloved stone throughout Asia.
Jewelry stores will certainly have jade pieces but for the best selection, make your way over to the Jade Market in Kowloon. Quality will vary widely here, so either do your research ahead of time or bring along someone who knows fair pricing and what to look for. Don’t be afraid to bargain! You may want to keep your Hong Kong packing list light so you can shop!
Here are some tips on bargain shopping around the world !

If you are traveling for business , know that locals tend to dress fairly conservatively in both style and color, favoring black, white, navy, and gray tones, so follow suit for your Hong Kong packing list. Working female professionals will often opt for a dress suit with black flats or a modest heel. Her accent piece in the outfit is often a piece of jade or a designer handbag.
Be sure to carry plenty of “name cards” (business cards) as they are liberally exchanged and yet another expression of wealth and stature.
Young Hong Kongers tend to favor a classic form of dress but never without a pop of color or a touch of quirkiness. Vintage, cartoonish, or even hip-hop influenced designs show personality and self-expression. You’ll find young and old alike wearing graphic tees and small boutiques sprinkled about the city selling accessories and fashion of this nature well within any price range.

Hong Kong may be a sub-tropical climate, but leave your flip flops, shorts, and tank tops at home in favor of long sleeve shirts, jeans/long pants, and a jacket if you are visiting in the winter months. Add your fall boots or a pair of warm shoes to your Hong Kong packing list, too.
Although these temperatures may not seem too cold, bear in mind that the air is damp and buildings in HK are not constructed to hold in heat. Pack a scarf to use as both a practical and versatile accessory.

Opt for leggings rather than skirts or shorts as the humidity is very high. Alternatively, invest in some athletic chafe guard to save your inner thighs from the effects of humidity.

Weather : Warm and pleasant with clear, sunny days. Average temperature: 23°C/73°F, humidity 72%.
Pacific Paperbag Waist Shorts
Autumn is the best time to visit Hong Kong since the cooler days will allow you to embrace the city on foot with ease. Wear shorts or long pants depending on your preference, paired with light, layered tops.
Here are some tips on how to dress for transitional seasons !
Hong Kong Geography and Climate
Victoria Harbor is a big reason Hong Kong has evolved from a sleepy fishing village to the famous city we know today. Like the deep waters that surround Manhattan, ships easily navigate this stretch of water and tourists can witness firsthand one of the most active ports in the world.
The harbor is flanked by the northern shore of Hong Kong Island and the southern coast of Kowloon, often referred to locally as the “Hong Kong side” and “Kowloon side”. This forms the lively “downtown” or core urban area of Hong Kong, which you will most likely spend a fair amount of time exploring as a visitor.
Rebecca Minkoff Julian Backpack
Hong Kong is compact and crowded, so keep it simple when it comes to what you plan to carry with you. Add to your Hong Kong packing list a messenger-style bag or one of these cute backpacks that will allow you to go hands-free.
Don’t forget to carry a small packet of tissues with you, as toilet paper is often absent in many public restrooms. This can easily be picked up from a corner convenience store upon arrival.
Here are a few other purse essentials for traveling in Asia !
Skechers Go Walk 4 Charcoal Comfortable Sneakers
Due to limited flatland in Hong Kong, prepare yourself for verticality. Your Hong Kong packing list should include supportive flat shoes that hug your feet comfortably to navigate the narrow, uneven, and sloping sidewalks with grace.
If you are visiting during the wet season, consider shoes and clothing that can endure downpours. Take advantage of escalators and overhead walkways when walking uphill (from the harbor toward the peak) as spacious cafes are harder to find here compared to other big cities.
We’ve got a list of cute walking shoes for sightseeing!
Halogen Side Slit Cardigan
Dress in layers because the temperature can vary greatly between heavily air conditioned indoors and the hot weather outside. If you plan on visiting temples, show respect by avoiding shorts or sleeveless shirts, or bring a scarf to throw over your shoulders.
In Hong Kong—as in much of Asia—keep in mind that it’s quite difficult to find sizes larger than a US size 8. If you fit into this category, be mindful to pack what you will need.
This goes for shoes as well, especially wider sizes. If you need more options, the UK department store, Marks and Spencer, stocks larger sizes for both women and men.
Here are a few ideas on how to dress stylishly modest !
Repel Travel Umbrella
Because of the humidity and heat, locals prefer umbrellas instead of raincoats . When it’s not raining, the umbrella can be used to block the sun and will cool you down significantly. You’ll even notice older people preferring a tall umbrella with a rubber stopper at the end rather than a cane for walking assistance.
Save space and don’t pack an umbrella; you can easily pick up an inexpensive, decent one from Circle K, 711, or Watsons.

I prefer to book “the entire home” instead of opting for shared accommodation on Airbnb. Aside from safety, I also like to feel like I’m living in the destination. It’s a small taste of local life plus you get more amenities than you would at a hotel such as a kitchen and washing machine.

I lived in Hong Kong for 7 years and this list is spot on. I would also encourage visitors to consider HK hiking trails and pack athletic gear for a walk in wood.

Hi Aireen, thank you for your question! Let me look into this for you! 🙂
Okay, I hope you can help me out where other destinations we can visit for the month of June.

Hi Amanda, thank you for your lovely feedback, so glad you found the article helpful!! Have a fantastic time in Hong Kong! 🙂
I am usually too warm, especially in a humid climate. I am wondering if lighter colors are acceptable for mid-late October. I have a mint green top and another in blues with some white. Both are pretty much impervious to wrinkles and wash easily. Do those colors seem all right?
Hi Patricia, thank you for your comment! If you normally wear lighter colours and you are comfortable wearing them, then you should be fine in late October! Have an excellent trip! 🙂
Wewill be there on the month of may, what should i wear then? What is the weather on the month of may normally ?

Thanks for the information! Very helpful:)
Hi Siby, thank you so much for your feedback! Glad you found it helpful 🙂
What about leggings are those a thing in HK?
Hi there, thank you for reaching out. Leggings are a great option particularly when the humidity is very high. You can learn them under a tunic top, dress or loose fitting t-shirts and tanks made of breathable fabrics. While sightseeing in other parts of Southeast Asia I wore a short cotton dress to stay cool and comfortable, but when it was time to visit a temple I threw on my leggings and wore my dress as a tunic with pants. Hope this helps. Have an amazing time! ?
I like different dress that suits in every occation
This was very helpful. Thank you!
Thanks Jody!
Useful article. Will be flying to HK on this Thursday.Keep writing yeah!
Thanks! Enjoy your trip!
I love most of your articles, but I have to quibble a bit with this one. Hong Kong is beastly hot and humid. I’m from Florida so I was pretty smug when I planned to move here. “No problem,” I said. “I’m used to the heat,” I said. I had no idea.
Your winter recommendation is good but the rest of the year, most of the outfits you show would induce heat stroke. The people you see on the street here in suits are dashing out of their air conditioned office to grab lunch. The rest of us wear skirts and sleeveless or cap sleeve tops or lightweight dresses, all in breathable fabrics. We carry large scarves in our bags because most restaurants and shops keep the temperature so cold.
I also carry a fan and a handkerchief to mop perspiration and hand sanitizer or baby wipes. I carry tissues, but mostly for my hands. Most toilets here have paper. The Mainland is another story.
For shoes, flats are good but they have to have padding and a good arch. We walk A LOT. Sadly, heels or cute shoes that aren’t super comfortable won’t do..
Just my $.02. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for your feedback Sharon! It’s hard to find the right photos online to convey all tips but we’ll do a better job next time 🙂
Yes I agree, Sharon, having lived in HK for nearly 3 years, the winter and spring advice is spot on. But in summer the heat and most important , humidity is relentless. You will sweat. And I mean sweat. No antiperspirant will hold it back and it will run down your back wearing those outfits. Yuk.
Cotton or breathable underwear is essential. And it will get wet. You will want to change them frequently. They will dry as you sit in air con but you will feel odd.
There’s no point in straightening irons either if your hair has a tendency to curl as the humidity will have it back to curly in no time. Either tie it up if long (and it keeps it off your neck so cooler) or embrace the curl!
HK is my absolute favourite place in the world. But you need to know how to cope with that humidity!
Thanks for the feedback Delyth!
Very helpful article as I am planning my holiday there in March. Is it still too hot in March or should I prepare for cold weather as well?
Hi Chuma, we always encourage you to check the weather forecast on weather.com for the most accurate information. Enjoy your trip!
What a great guide! I think I’m going to Hong Kong for a visa run from Vietnam in May and I can’t wait! This will be super helpful when I pack!
Best, Sarah
Thanks Sarah!

What To Wear In Hong Kong: 11 Casual Outfits For All Seasons
This post shows you what to wear in Hong Kong.
Planning a trip to Hong Kong and not sure what to wear? For the majority of the year, Hong Kong is quite hot and very humid in the summer. The good thing is you can pack lightly!
The thing about Hong Kong fashion is there isn’t a particular style like how Japan and Korea do. But when I was in Hong Kong, I observed that most people wear very casual and simple outfits. I see crop tops and T-shirts worn very often.
In this post, I will share what I wore to Hong Kong last October and also some other Hong Kong outfit ideas so you can get ultimate inspiration!
Table of Contents
What To Wear In Hong Kong
1. black mini dress and cap.
This is the outfit I wore the most on my Hong Kong trip. Since it’s humid sometimes, it’s nice to wear something that fits loosely so it doesn’t stick to your skin.
This black mini dress is so easy to throw on and pairing it with some longer socks really ties together the look. Also, the cap is kind of a life saver to keep cool.
2. Black Mini Dress with Hair Up
For the next outfit, we’re wearing the same dress but this time changing it up by tying the hair up into a ponytail. In the evening, there’s no need for a cap so you can style it this way.
Since the black dress is very plain, style it further with some earrings or a necklace.
3. Light Cardigan and Long Skirt
I wore this outfit to Japan but I think it’s also very fitting to wear to Hong Kong, especially on a day that’s not too hot. I saw quite a few people in Hong Kong wearing long denim skirts so this outfit will fit right in.
You have successfully joined our subscriber list.
4. Thin Cardigan and White Pants
During the late fall season to winter, it won’t be too cold but also can feel a bit breezy sometimes. So a good outfit to wear is a thin cardigan with a pair of white pants. This is such a classic and modern look.
5. Blazer and Jeans
If you want to look a bit more edgy and cool, you can wear a pair of baggy jeans and a blazer. This is something I don’t see too often on the streets of Hong Kong but I do see occassionally.
6. Leather Jacket and Black Pants
Going along with the edgy theme, another outfit that can stand out is a leather jacket and black pants. You’ll see leather jackets worn by the younger generation in Hong Kong.
7. Dress Shirt and Black Pants
If you want to dress business casual in Hong Kong, try wearing a satin or silk button up dress shirt along with a pair of black jeans. Then, throw on a pair of black flats. You’ll see corporate or office workers in Hong Kong wearing a similar outfit.
8. Dress With T-Shirt
Even though Hong Kong doesn’t have a very distinct clothing style, I noticed that many people tend to wear more loosely fitted clothing compared to tight-fitting clothing. So if you like something loose-fitting, try wearing a long flowy maxi skirt.
To keep it more conservative and casual, wear a white t-shirt underneath!
9. White Top and Black Pants
Hong Kong fashion is all about simplicity so wearing a simple white top and black jeans is never a bad idea. Pair it with some white sneakers!
10. Cardigan and White Jeans
If you like to add some more color into your outfits, you can wear a colorful cardigan and pair it with some comfortable jeans. Perfect outfit to wear in the late fall and winter months.
11. Jacket and Jeans
This is a similar outfit but with different colors. In this look, we’re wearing a blue cardigan with some blue jeans and sneakers.
What To NOT Wear To Hong Kong
Hong Kong has a very relaxed style and there’s nothing you can’t wear in Hong Kong. But I’ve noticed that people don’t like to wear clothing that shows too much skin. Even if you wear a T-shirt, pants, and flip-flops, that would totally be normal!

What to Wear in Hong Kong
Top style tips for hong kong.
- When deciding what to wear to Hong Kong, keep in mind this a fashion-conscious, designer-conscious city – particularly amongst the young people.
- Generally, older Hong Kong people dress modestly – no short skirts, no strappy tops nor generally tight or revealing clothes. However the same cannot be said about the young! In the full heat and humidity of summer you will see plenty of camisoles, t-shirts and shorts.
- Dress well in a smart casual fashion and you will find you fit in.
- Hong Kong's sub-tropical climate means that you won't need winter clothes for most of the year.
- However, if you are staying in a hotel we would suggest you take a light sweater or pashmina as the air conditioning can be fierce.
- Loose-fitting, natural fabrics and layered clothes will work all year round.
- We suggest that you favor dark colors as these are always popular and will mean you will be less conspicuous.
- Jeans are also popular but probably too uncomfortable in the hottest parts of the year.
- People seem to make more of an effort to dress smartly for dinner in the hotels – so a nice top or dress, or pants and shirt, and smart shoes, will be useful.
- Also be warned – you may be refused entry at some up-scale restaurants if you don't look smart enough. If you've been sightseeing, aim to freshen up and change your clothes before meals.
- If you are in Hong Kong on business then formal suits are the norm – for both men and women.
- If you are looking for a highly versatile travel jacket to bring along we recommend the SCOTTeVEST range. Their range of jackets have been specifically designed with traveling in mind and include RFID security (to protect your passport information), 23 secure pockets and personal connectivity integration.
Shoes to pack for Hong Kong
- Be sure to pack some comfortable walking shoes for sightseeing. We love Hotter shoes , for total comfort along with style.
- And the Lindsay Phillips Switch Flops are great too – using interchangeable shoe and flip-flop bases with snap-on decorations, you can change your look from day to evening in an instant whilst still packing light.
Pack for the Weather
- From mid-December, through January to mid-February it is cooler and warmer layers would be advisable. So leave your flip flops, shorts and strappy tops at home in favor of t-shirts, jeans and a jacket.
- The wet season is June/July/August, and if you visit at this time our advice would be to pack a lightweight raincoat, but not to bother to pack an umbrella as you will find inexpensive ones on street stalls and in local shops everywhere.
- We love the Weather+ app – it gives an accurate 6 day forecast for day and night, which when you're planning from home is really helpful. You can keep all the places you've been to too – a nice way to remember your trip 🙂 Download for iPad/iPhone or Android
Clothing tips for women
- The humidity can play havoc with your hair – so think about accessories or a scarf to keep it looking neat and tidy.
- A few well-chosen pieces of costume jewelry will transform any outfit.
- And a pashmina is a versatile piece that will dress up any outfit when you need it – as well as keeping you warm or covering your shoulders for modesty.
Clothing tips for men
- There are no specific things to bring to your attention, check out our packing list for our suggested capsule wardrobe.
- For great versatile travel jackets with multiple pockets including RFID security options, we love the SCOTTeVEST range.

What to Pack & Tips
- Pack a hat or cap to protect your face from the heat and sun.
- A pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes.
- A wind shelter or rain jacket umbrella to shield yourselves from the rains.
- Similarly, if you have a small and light travel umbrella, then it's a great idea to carry it with you to protect yourselves from the rain. If you don't have one, you don't have to worry because you'll easily find one in the marketplace.
- As Hong Kong is quite crowded, it would be smart and efficient to carry a small backpack where you don't have to be worrying about the safety of its contents constantly.
- Don't forget to pack some workout or hiking gear; you never know when and where it will come handy.
- One of the best ways to dress up in Hong Kong are loose-fitting clothes and light in fabric. Layered clothing is also a good choice to tackle the unstable weather conditions.
- If you plan on staying in a hotel than its always safe to carry a shawl or a light jacket or sweater because although the weather is mostly on the warmer side, the hotels have harsh air conditioning.
- If you're going out for lunch or dinner at a restaurant or hotel, it is best to dress smartly. A dress or top and skirt combination with some smart shoes would work great for women while the men can dress in a shirt and pants with loafers and make a stellar impression. This is important as restaurants can refuse entry.
- Avoid jeans during summers. Sport t-shirts, shorts, and camisoles instead.
- Dress according to the local rules and customs, especially while visiting temples and other religious sites.

17 Top Hong Kong Packing List Items for 2024 + What to Wear & NOT to Bring
Hong Kong is a truly magical place. The perfect intersection of East & West, it has long been a center of commerce for the entire world and has moved between hands throughout history. From its world-renowned food to its notorious cityscapes, Hong Kong is utterly mesmerizing.
Making the most of your trip to Hong Kong requires bringing along the right tools to allow you to focus on your trip and capture the most from your experiences. From items to help you pack and stay organized, to daily must-haves, this guide will help you come prepared for the trip of a lifetime!
What to Pack for Hong Kong – 17 Essentials
1. packing cubes.
To make packing a breeze and stay organized during your trip, we strongly recommend using packing cubes. They allow for easy separation and categorization of your clothing, toiletries, electronics, or anything else you might want to bring along on your trip. Especially during that last-minute opening of your luggage, you’ll thank yourself for using this lifesaving item!

Whether you’re traveling around the city, or hiking the famous Dragon’s Back, you’ll need something to help you hold and protect your possessions. This is why we suggest an all-purpose daypack that has room for your everyday carry for the city, and your outdoor necessities for days spent hiking or hanging out at the beach.
3. Virtual Private Network (VPN)
In a hyper-connected place like Hong Kong, protecting your digital safety is even more important than ever. Connecting to local public networks from airports to hotels can put you at serious risk of having your information stolen. To stay safe, and protect yourself online, make use of a virtual private network ( VPN ) to cloak your IP address and remain anonymous while online.

4. Universal Travel Adapter
Hong Kong is not the destination where you should leave your technology behind. From using a mobile translator to navigating public transportation, and finding local recommendations, staying connected helps you have an unforgettable trip. To keep your devices charged and ready to go, you’ll need a universal travel adapter capable of supporting you on your trip to Hong Kong as well as for all your future travels.
5. Sunscreen
As for any tropical and subtropical destinations, sunscreen is a must. Especially if you’re planning to swim at the beach or explore Hong Kong’s more rugged countryside, sunscreen is an absolute necessity. Even if you plan to stay within Hong Kong’s concrete jungle, it’s still easy to be overexposed to the harsh sun and sunscreen should be applied regularly to keep yourself safe.
6. Phone Tripod
One of the simplest yet most useful pieces of kit to improve your photography game is a small tripod for your cellphone. This allows you to pose for pictures without needing to rely on the photography skills of a stranger, take a timelapse of the organized chaos in the city, and avoid motion blur to produce the highest quality photos possible.
7. Universal Waterproof Phone Case
While it’s easy to forget, Hong Kong is an island state, which means there’s plenty of water that risks damaging your sensitive and expensive electronic devices. This is especially true of your cellphone, which is one of the few devices that will likely come with you to the beach, or out in the rain. Protect your phone with a universal waterproof phone case and assure the safety of your digital lifeline.
8. Disposable Camera
Go beyond the phone and digital camera, back to the good ol’ days of the disposable camera. An often-overlooked piece of gear, these cameras take pictures perfectly fit for the aesthetic of Hong Kong. Highlighting the nostalgia and history of the island, this is a cheap and amazing way to capture special memories.
9. Deet-Free Insect Repellent
One of the lesser-known complaints of Hong Kong is that the mosquitos can be quite awful at certain times throughout the year. While you’re usually safe from their annoyance in the city, if you’re planning to spend any time outdoors, we recommend you bring some insect repellent to ensure your comfort. We also recommend using Deet-free repellents, which are safer alternatives to other repellents that include potentially harmful chemicals.
10. Quick-Dry Travel Towel
While Hong Kong makes you think of cityscapes, it also gives new meaning to the phrase “concrete jungle”. No number of skyscrapers will change the fact that Hong Kong is a subtropical island, where it’s characteristically hot and humid. So, whether you’re in the city, or out on one of many of Hong Kong’s incredible hikes, a quick-dry towel can often come in handy.
11. Hanging Toiletry Bag
Hong Kong is not known for being particularly spacious, including its hostels and hotels. This is especially true in the bathroom, where space is usually already quite limited. A hanging toiletry bag can make all the difference, leaving more counter space available for all your needs and making it easy to stay clean and organized.
12. Neck Wallet
While Hong Kong is far from a dangerous place, it’s always a good idea to take extra steps to protect your most important items. This typically means protecting the contents of your wallet, which is why we recommend using a neck wallet. This allows you to keep what you can’t afford to lose as close to you as possible and give you the confidence to enjoy your trip without fear.
13. Brimmed Hat
Just as we recommend using sunscreen to protect yourself from harmful UV radiation, we also recommend wearing a brimmed hat to shield you from the sun. This gives you another layer of protection for your head and face, as well as keeps you covered and safe from pesky mosquitos.
14. Windproof Travel Umbrella
Especially if you’re planning to visit Hong Kong in the warmer months, you should come prepared to deal with a very wet climate. Of course, the first and most important piece of protection is a windproof umbrella. We recommend choosing an umbrella designed for travel that is easy to store and carry.
15. Travel Insurance
Even in a safe place like Hong Kong, there’s always a risk of injury to yourself and your loved ones. To protect yourself in case of an emergency, be sure to have a travel insurance plan active to help you seek treatment and pay for often expensive medical care just in case. We use TravelInsurance.com to compare plans from top companies to find the one that best fits our family and travel plans.

16. Portable Charger
Hong Kong is a hub of science and technology, and in many ways gives us a look into cities of the future. With technology everywhere, you’ll want to make regular use of your devices, from scanning QR code menus to navigating public transportation. To make sure your electronic devices are always ready to go, bring along a portable charger, and make use of the technological conveniences across Hong Kong.
17. Water Bottle
Hong Kong can sometimes feel like a sauna, with its coastal beauty also bringing on the heat! Staying safe in Hong Kong means staying hydrated, which is often neglected in the city. To make sure you’re drinking enough water, we recommend bringing a water bottle suitable for any activity.

What to Wear in Hong Kong
Overall, we recommend prioritizing comfort both in and out of the city. We suggest wearing streetwear or athletic clothing for the day-to-day, as well as for any outdoor activities. This includes walking shoes, shorts, and t-shirts, as well as athletic clothing in general. If you plan to participate in any of Hong Kong’s incredible nightlife, you won’t need anything special, and we again recommend making sure you’re dressed comfortably in an outfit that best suits your style. In general, you should feel free to dress as you would at home and should take steps to assure that you’re prepared for the season, which you can do by following our suggestions for what to wear for men and women!
During a visit to Hong Kong, we recommend women be prepared with an assortment of different clothing options to accommodate the range of activities. For most activities, we suggest wearing casual clothes such as athletic shirts , jean shorts , or lounge shorts . For special occasions, nightlife, or business, we recommend bringing some nicer clothing including dresses and skirts . Be careful though, as it’s important to remember that Hong Kong can get hot and humid, so you won’t want to wear anything too heavy, and should put safety and comfort first!
Just as for women, we recommend men come prepared to wear a variety of different types of clothing. For the city, we suggest casual, comfortable clothing such as sneakers , jeans , and a fitted shirt . For the outdoors, simple walking or hiking shoes along with athletic clothing are just perfect. For a night out or elegant dinner, a blazer or collared shirt with jeans or slacks is plenty.
Packing for the Seasons in Hong Kong
Warm & wet seasons – summer/spring – may, june, july, august, september, october.
Cool & Dry Seasons – Fall/Winter – November, December, January, February, March, April
Nightlife: Nightlife in Hong Kong is some of the best in Asia, with unforgettable bars and clubs throughout the city. It’s an open and inviting atmosphere, where interesting dress is encouraged and the incredible diversity of people brings a little bit of everything. As always, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing to stay cool and doesn’t restrict your movements such as sneakers and jeans . Beyond this, we encourage you to express your style with there being no specific restrictions on dress in bars, clubs, and restaurants.
What NOT to Bring to Hong Kong
1. don’t bring too many warm clothes.
While it can get chilly in the winter months, Hong Kong is most often hot and humid, even in the supposed “colder months”. While it’s always best to come prepared for variable or unexpected weather, even in the coldest months you won’t be finding yourself needing more than a light jacket and long pants to stay warm. No need for the down winter coats, or thick mittens.
2. DON’T Bring Heavy-Duty Outdoor Gear
This includes diving, rock climbing, and similar activities which often require expensive and cumbersome gear. All you need is some standard outdoor equipment like hiking shoes , which is enough to leave you well equipped to take on most anything outdoors in Hong Kong.
3. DON’T Bring Food & Drinks
Some people like to travel with some safer food and drinks just in case they have any difficulties eating local foods, or to have handy in a pinch. While we understand the rationale, the food is so incredible in Hong Kong that you’re doing yourself an injustice by not taking every opportunity to enjoy it.
4. DON’T Bring Political Iconography
The political situation in Hong Kong is a highly debated topic, and people often hold very strong beliefs on this subject. While in Hong Kong, we recommend staying removed from the ongoing political debate and bringing items related to any relevant political situations.
5. DON’T Bring Sensitive or Expensive Items
Regardless of how you choose to spend your time, Hong Kong guarantees you an active experience. You won’t want to be bogged down by having to take special care of all your possessions and should come ready to be on the go without inhibition.
6. DON’T Bring Too Many Clothes
We understand this isn’t easy, as there is a lot you might want to bring for a trip to Hong Kong. However, we encourage you to carefully plan your trip so you can try to remove as many items as possible from your packing list and bring exactly what you need. And regardless of how much you ultimately choose to pack, packing carefully can make all the difference, which is why we recommend using items such as packing cubes to stay organized during your trip.
In Hong Kong, you’ll be out in the hustle and bustle of the city, or hiking one of its many coastal routes, so there’s no reason to bring anything you won’t need on your person for the day-to-day. Even in the city, Hong Kong is an active place where you’ll constantly be moving around. To stay comfortable, we recommend avoiding dressing with excess fabric that may get dirty or get caught around the city or on public transportation. Additionally, avoid wearing anything that may be restrictive such as poorly fitting clothing.
FAQs about Hong Kong
1. how expensive is hong kong.
One of the few pain points of visiting Hong Kong is the cost, as prices for meals, activities and almost everything else are often quite expensive. However, as with any destination, it all depends on what you plan to do, and how well you plan your trip! The savvy traveler can have a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Hong Kong on a modest budget.
2. Is Hong Kong Safe?
Like most of East Asia, Hong Kong is notoriously safe. Violent crimes and crime, in general, are extremely uncommon. While the political situation may be tense, it rarely leads to dangerous events, and you will have the means to avoid such situations even in the case they do occur. Rules of common sense apply, but the vast majority of visitors have a safe and friendly experience in Hong Kong.
3. Is it easy to travel to mainland China from Hong Kong?
While geographically close, traveling from Hong Kong to China can be difficult. This is because the entry requirements for Hong Kong are largely different from mainland China, even though they are technically the same country. If you’re planning to continue your travels in China, be sure to have the appropriate visa, and that you meet all of the other travel requirements.
4. What exactly is there to do outdoors?
Hong Kong is most famous for its skyscrapers and urban jungle, but it offers much more than this. In fact, most of the island is largely undeveloped and has ample beaches and hiking trails to enjoy. This includes Dragon’s Back, a winding hike along a ridge overlooking the water, and ending at a beautiful beach. There are also hikes to religious sites including The Big Buddha. If you’re planning to enjoy any of these experiences, be sure to bring along some sunscreen , hat , and water bottle to stay safe in the often sweltering Hong Kong heat.
5. Where should I stay in Hong Kong?
While the thought of as a small island nation, Hong Kong is deceptively large. Especially because of its island geography, your destination may only be a few miles away but take as long as an hour to reach. For this reason, we suggest choosing where to stay based on where you expect to spend most of your time, rather than choosing the most scenic spot in the city.
6. Are there any health risks in Hong Kong?
With much of the region requiring various inoculations and medications, people often ask if Hong Kong has any of the same requirements. Thankfully, Hong Kong is clear of many of the diseases and illnesses that are all too common in many other countries, and won’t have to do anything to prepare for your visit.
7. What is there to eat in Hong Kong?
Hong Kong is a foodie’s paradise, offering some of the best food on the continent. The food is both unique to Hong Kong as well as influenced by cultures around the world. Some classics include dim sum, steamed buns, and xiaolongbao. We encourage you to try as much different food as you can and explore this culinary wonderland.
8. What are the best gifts to get for family and friends in Hong Kong?
Just like with food, Hong Kong is also a shopping haven. From offering luxury goods from famous brands from around the world to a small hole-in-the-wall store with treasures that must be uncovered. Additionally, as a cultural and historical center of the region, there are so many wonderful gifts to bring back to friends and family. This includes teas, art, and clothing.

We visited Hong Kong during the very hot and sweaty month of June, and today I’m sharing a few tips on what to pack and what to wear in Hong Kong during the humid summer months!
I had to wear breezier outfits that were conservative enough to keep aunties* from fainting, while still maintaining my sanity in the humidity.
One of our friends wore a tank top without a bra, and an auntie walked by in horror.
Here are my tips on dressing for Hong Kong weather, along with some cute Hong Kong summer outfit ideas!
*Auntie or uncle is how Asians refer to people who are older than us, for those of you who are wondering.

What to pack for Hong Kong
I’ll chat more about what clothes to wear in Hong Kong in a bit, but you’ll definitely want to pack lightweight clothing for extremely humid weather.
Personal care
Pack your basic personal care essentials, like shampoo and soap.
You won’t need any hair tools, because your hair will likely get ruined by the humidity anyways.
A lot of places operate as cash-only, so you’ll have to bring some Hong Kong dollars (otherwise known as HKD).
Hand sanitizer
If you plan on eating street food, you’ll want to bring along some hand sanitizer.
Not only will you be handling cash, but you’ll be touching food right afterwards.
Plus, you’ll want to clean your hands after eating anything sticky!
What to wear in Hong Kong during the summer
Hong Kong gets insanely hot and humid during the summer, and you’re going to want to pack lightweight and breathable clothing.
Here’s a packing list of what you should bring to Hong Kong:
- Breezy layers (button downs, kimonos)
- Comfortable sandals
Pack as little clothes as possible if you plan on shopping.
Clothes shopping in Hong Kong can be insanely cheap, and you can find tons of cute pieces.
I found an outfit that I wore to Hong Kong Disneyland , and it totalled to $8 dollars Canadian .
The top was $3 and the shorts were $5.
The quality is actually comparative to Brandy Melville clothing, so not too shabby for the price!
Fashion in Hong Kong is pretty different than in Canada, and while a lot of clothes are more of what’s trendy in Asia, you can find Western fashion pieces as well.
Breezy layers
Yes, Hong Kong is a little conservative, but they’re not crazy about it.
There’s no need to cover everything up.
Tons of tourists travel to Hong Kong all the time, and they’re used to seeing bare shoulders and thighs.
I brought along a lightweight shirtdress (similar here ) and a sheer kimono (featured in my post on Hong Kong Disneyland ) to wear over tank tops and cover my booty while wearing short shorts or mini dresses.
Breezier layers will help to cover you, while not adding too much extra layers to make you sweat!
Tank tops and shorts
You’ll be living in tank tops and shorts your entire trip.
Hong Kong humidity will have you sweating the moment you step outside the door. Literally.
When it feels like a gazillion degrees outside and you’re soaked in sweat the second you step outside, you’re going to want to be comfortable!
Tank tops and shorts are the way to go, because they’re breathable, comfortable, and easy to move around in.
Dresses are fine as well, but my thighs chafed way too much in the heat when I wore them.
Comfy sandals
Hong Kong has a great transit system, but you’re probably still going to be doing a lot of walking.
Sneakers are great, but my feet sweated so much I had to toss my smelly Nike Roshes once I got back from my trip.
If you can find breathable sneakers, those will work.
Otherwise, comfy sandals that won’t kill your feet are the way to go.
The Birkenstock Arizona Sandals are pretty awesome!
Hong Kong summer outfit ideas
You don’t have to sacrifice looking cute to dress appropriate for the weather.
Here are a few Hong Kong summer outfits you can pack and wear!
Like I said, you’ll probably be living in tank tops and shorts the entire time.
Go for breezier pieces or you’ll sweat to death!
I’d say fabric shorts over denim shorts, but still pack denim shorts because they’re cute.
Summer dresses
Can’t go wrong with a cute summer dress!
I’d go with something that isn’t too mini.
Doesn’t have to be too grandma, but just something that doesn’t show too much of anything.
Maxi dresses might feel a little too heavy in the heat, so go with light midi dresses instead.
Shirt dresses
Shirt dresses are awesome because they’re breathable and they can be worn either as dresses or as layers over any other outfits.
Woot for being multifunctional!

Seasonal Guide: The 10 pieces you need to pack for a trip to Hong Kong in the summer
We developed our Hong Kong packing list to help you figure out what to pack for Hong Kong in the summer. To do this, we created a 10-piece travel wardrobe.
