The weather in the Andaman Islands varies from 25 Degrees to 33 Degrees and it's a tropical climate throughout the year. Temperature wise even during peak summers the island temperate is around 30 - 35 Degrees.

Step 2 - How many days are required to visit Andaman?

To give a perspective of how many days are required will share the map of the Andaman Islands. The Andaman Islands are divided into North, Middle and South Andaman Islands. So basically, the number of days you want to visit the Andaman Islands varies upon how many places you plan to visit during your stay at the islands. Post the above itineraries you still have some offbeat places such as Long Island to cover which in itself requires 3 days.

For travelers who are short of time can consider a 4 days trip to Andaman Islands and cover Port Blair and Havelock Island as per the itinerary below. The first and the last days of your visit to Andaman should be in Port Blair as the only commercial airport of Andaman is in Port Blair. Other islands has to be visited in a ferry from Port Blair

Day 1 - Arrival - Stay at Port Blair Day 2 - Travel to Havelock Island Day 3 - Return from Havelock to Port Blair Day 4 - Departure

Step 3 - Things to visit in Andaman

Now while you are planning your visit to Andaman you will need to know what the best things to do in Andaman are and the major places that need to be visited. The top places in the Andaman Islands are

Baratang Island

The major locations at Neil Island are  Bharatpur Beach Laxmanpur Beach Natural Rock Formation Sitapur beach Travelers who prefer visiting the islands for water activities should spend more time at Havelock Island as the major activities are done at Havelock. Knowing what you want to do in Andaman is crucial while planning your island trip. Check our some of our best articles about places, beaches, offbeat things in the islands that can help you select what you want to do in Andaman Beaches in Andaman Tourist places in Andaman Islands Offbeat places in Andaman

Step 4 - Get your flight tickets

Flight tickets to the Andaman Islands can get really expensive based on your date of travel. The airport where you land at Port Blair is called Veer Savarkar International Airport and the code is IXZ

Direct flights are available from Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. Connecting flights are available from all cities with intermittent direct flights from Mumbai and Delhi as well.

When you plan your budget for Andaman the flight costs are a great deal. If you get cheaper quotes for flights then your overall package cost goes down.

Approx cost of flight per person from major cities

Chennai (MAA) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights - One Way - 6000 - 9000 Rupees per person

Kolkata (CCU) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights - One Way - 6000 - 9000 Rupees per person

Bangalore (BLR) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 8000 - 12000 Rupees per person

Hyderabad (HYD) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 8000 - 12000 Rupees per person

Delhi (DEL) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 10000 - 16000 Rupees per person

Mumbai (BOM) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 10000 - 16000 Rupees per person

If you see the price flight varies a lot based on the season and your date of travel. The price can sometimes go very high to reach the Andaman Islands specifically from the North part of India. You can connect with the Experience Andamans team to get group flight prices from the below-mentioned cities and as per availability we will share with you the series airfare.

The cities that we have best price to Port Blair are Chennai Kolkata Bangalore

Step 4 - Cost of Accommodation

Now once you know the cost of a Flight from your city, the next is to add the price of accommodation at all the islands that you are planning to stay in the islands as per your itinerary.

The accommodation has to be booked at Port Blair, Havelock and Neil Island

At Port Blair, the cost of the stay is comparatively cheaper than that of Havelock and Neil Island

Budget accommodation - Less than 1500 Rupees per night on double-sharing basis 2 Star Properties - 2500 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 3 Star Properties - 3500 - 4500 Rupee per night on double sharing basis 4 Star Properties - 5000 - 9000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 5 Star Properties - 8000 - 15000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis

At Havelock Island  Budget accommodation - Less than 1500 Rupees per night on double-sharing basis 2 Star Properties - 3000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 3 Star Properties - 4500 - 5500 Rupee per night on double sharing basis 4 Star Properties - 5000 - 18000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 5 Star Properties - 20000 - 40000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis

Likewise at Neil Island.

The major cost of your trip to Andaman Islands will be

Flight Cost + Accommodation Cost - These two costs will cover around 70% of your total package cost in Andaman Islands

Let's take an example to get an approximate cost so far for your trip to Andaman Islands

Consider 2 Adults are traveling from Chennai and are visiting Andaman Islands for 5 days with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island

Flight ticket cost = 8000 x 2 x 2 (return airfare) = 32000 Accommodation Cost in 3 Star hotels Port Blair = 3500 x 2 = 7000 Havelock = 4500 x 2 = 9000

The total cost of accommodation with Breakfast = 16000

Total cost for your trip so far = 32000 For Flights  + 16000 For Accomodation = 48000

Now we need to consider the cost of Ferry, Transport, Activities and Food which we will cover below

Step 5 - Cost of Ferry to move from one Island to the other

Ferry in Andaman Islands is very important again. Basically you will be landing at Port Blair airport and to go to other islands such as Havelock and Neil Island you will need a ferry that takes you from one island to the other and brings to you back. These ferries are of prime importance in your trip planning. If you select an island to book where the ferry is not on a regular basis then you will end up paying more or you can even end not reaching the islands because of no ferry operational.

Ferry to havelock from Port Blair

The major ferries that operate in Andaman Islands are :

Government ferry - No online booking only counter booking allowed Makruzz Nautika ITT Majestic Green Ocean

Except for the Government ferry, all other ferries can be booked online.  Check the ferry booking details on our website that can be booked online

So the ferry charges approximately 1500 Per Person for each side. Therefore for 2 adults as per our previous itinerary, we will need a ferry from Port Blair to Havelock Island and return from Havelock to Port Blair Ferry cost = 1500 x 2 x 2 side = 6000

Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) = 54000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island

Next we need to discuss about the other cost such as transportation, activities and sightseeing.

Step 6 - Cost of water activities

Once you are sorted with your flight, hotels and ferry then comes the next part of your trip planning is the cost of water activities in the Andaman islands . The major activities that is done in Havelock Island island are as below :

Andaman water sports seawalk

Scuba Diving costs Rupees 3500 Per Person Sea Walking cost Rupees 3500 Per Person Jet Ski ride cost Rupees 700 Per Person Semi Submarine cost Rupees 2100 Per Person Likewise many activities are available at different islands, please check the detailed list of all the water activities in Andaman on our website.

So as per our previous itinerary plan suppose we want to add Scuba Diving  for 2 people then the package cost will add up 7000. After adding the activity the package cost will be

Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) = 61000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island Many travelers add 2 - 3 different activities in Andaman and as per the price the budget of your trip increases.

Step 7 - Cost of transportation as per your itinerary

In this section, we will specifically discuss about the package cost for 4 Night and 5 days. So far we have came down to the below cost

Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) = 61000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island Let us consider the itinerary as below :

Day 1 - Airport Pickup. Then visit to Corbyns Cove Beach and Cellular Jail - Overnight at Port Blair Day. 2 - Travel from Port Blair to Havelock in a ferry and visit Radhanagar Beach - Overnight at Havelock Island Day 3 - Visit Elephant Beach Day 4 - Scuba Diving at Havelock Island and Return to Port Blair Day 5 - Departure

Cabs in Andaman

The cab cost for the above pickup and drop will come approximately to 7000 Rupees for all pickup and drops. If you are taking a 2 wheeler at Havelock Island then the cost only for Port Blair pickup and drop will come to Rupees 4000 and for 2 days two-wheeler will cost you 500 Per day rental with petrol extra. So lets consider 1500 including rental and the petrol.

So overall in transportation, you will be spending approx 6000 Rupees In the above cost entry ticket to Cellular Jail, Light and Sound Show and ferry ticket to Elephant beach are not considered. These tickets for couple will cost around 3000 Per Couple So the revised budget now becomes

Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons + Transportation + Entry tickets = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) + 6000 (Transportation) + 3000 (Entry Tickets) = 70000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island

With this we have now come to an approximate cost for your trip to Andaman Islands including flight, hotels, ferry, activity and transport. The last leg is the food cost which will bring you to the overall cost

Step 8 - Food Cost

The final part of your cost comes from your food and personal expenses. Let's consider the average meal cost per person is 500. Therefore for 4 days, you will be having 8 meals in total including lunch and dinner

Approx cost of food equals 500 per meal x 2 person x 4 days x 2 (lunch and dinner) = 8000. Let's keep an upper side for food to be around 10k considering evening snacks etc

Total Final trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons + Transportation + Entry tickets + Food = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) + 6000 (Transportation) + 3000 (Entry Tickets) + 10000 (Food) = 80000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island

Therefore we can say that an approximate cost of 80000 will be spent on your 5 days trip to Andaman Islands. The key to planning your trip is to get the lowest deals on flight and hotels. If you get it cheaper then you save a lot more during your trip.

Step 9 - Conclusion

Andaman Itinerary For 6 Days

  • April 24, 2022

The far-flung archipelago of Andaman & Nicobar Islands consists of 572 islands, out of which only 37 are inhabited. The islands of Nicobar are off-limits to tourists, and we can only visit a few islands in Andaman. Located in the Bay of Bengal off the eastern coast of India , the Andaman Islands are a sight to behold. Sun-kissed beaches, azure waters, exhilarating water activities, intriguing history, and abundant natural beauty are just a few of the reasons to visit this tropical paradise. Additional attractions include spectacular sunsets, limestone caves, mangrove rainforests, and abundant marine life. In fact, it is an excellent destination for scuba divers and snorkelers as it is home to a plethora of vibrant coral and exotic marine life. This itinerary will take you through the most inhabited and exciting areas of the Andaman Islands.

Suggested Andaman Itinerary for 6 Days

Day 1 of andaman itinerary: port blair.

The only way to get to the remote islands is to fly into Port Blair. Direct flights are available from Delhi , Kolkata, Mumbai , and Chennai to Veer Sarvankar International Airport in Port Blair. Check the flights and connectivity before planning your vacation, as the timetable changes randomly. In Port Blair, there isn’t much to do. However, Cellular jail should be on your agenda. The Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani, was a colonial prison that housed several prominent Indian freedom fighters. The horrifying stories of brutality and depravity are sure to have a sobering effect. There is also a light and sound show in the evening (6 pm-7 pm). If you have time left, you can go to the coconut palm-fringed Corbyn Beach and watch a scenic sunset. Enjoy a leisurely meal and spend the night in Port Blair.

Day 2 of Andaman Itinerary: Havelock and Radhanagar Beach

To get to Havelock (Swaraj Deep Island), you can use a seaplane, a government-operated ferry, or a private ferry. Choose Markuzz Ferries for your ferry transfer since they are spacious and comfortable Catamarans. They offer air conditioning, nice seats, clean restrooms, and a small snack bar. The trip will take about 1.5 hours and will cost close to Rs1400 ($20) one way. If you can’t get tickets in Markuzz, you’ll have to use Green Ocean Ferries, Aashi, Sea Link, or government-operated boats, which are cheaper but have subpar facilities and may take longer.

During this trip, we plan to spend as much time as possible on Havelock Island, which is noted for its clean beaches , lush green forests, and rich underwater treasure. Take the morning ferry (departs from Haddo Jetty) to Havelock and get off at Swaraj Deep Jetty. To get to your hotel, you’ll need to take a taxi/auto from there. Check into your hotel and spend the rest of the day at Radhanagar Beach. The secluded beach is located on the western coast of Havelock Island. The Radhanagar Beach (Beach 7) is ranked among Asia’s top ten most gorgeous beaches, and you’ll see why when you visit. The crescent-shaped beach spans 2 kilometers and has an average width of 30 to 40 meters.  Velvety sand, excellent waves, emerald waters, picturesque sunset, and scarce crowds make this beach a perfect place to relax and enjoy. There are no water sports on the beach. Taj Exotica Resort & Spa is a 1-minute walk from the famed beach. If you can afford the upscale resort, go for it.

Day 3 of Andaman Itinerary: Elephant Beach, Havelock

Today we are going to visit Elephant Beach. A small cruise boat will take you to Elephant Beach from the Swaraj Deep Jetty in less than 30 minutes. The round-trip ferry would cost Rs1000 ($14) per person. It leaves you there for three hours, and you are free to do whatever you choose during that time. The same jetty will bring you back after the allotted time.  Another way to reach Elephant Beach is by trekking. The trail begins at the Forest Camp, which is located 8 kilometers from the jetty. Because the trail runs through dense rainforests, it is recommended that you bring an escort with you on the one-hour trek. You can get a guide for 500 rupees (USD 8). The guide will accompany you to Elephant Beach, assist you while you are there, and bring you back to the Forest Camp. Keep in mind that if you go trekking, you must return the same way you came. You will not be able to go back on the ferry.

Havelock’s Elephant Beach is a great place to go snorkeling. The crystal-clear water, rich coral reef formations, and amazing marine life near the coast provide for an unforgettable snorkeling experience. You’re going to have the time of your life if you love water activities. There’s Jet skiing, banana boats, an underwater sea walk, parasailing, and a slew of other water activities. Except for snorkeling (Rs1500) and parasailing (Rs3250), most of the activities cost Rs600. Elephant Beach is quite crowded and extensively commercialized. If you are not interested in water sports, you can skip going there and spend the day at other beaches such as Beach 2, 3, and 7. The last boat leaves Elephant Beach by 3 p.m. The rest of the day is free to do whatever you choose. If you’re in the mood to venture out again, Beach 2 and 3 have some nice restaurants and beach shacks.

PS: If you want to do scuba diving in Havelock, arrange a morning excursion so you can return in time to explore Elephant Beach. Scuba diving will take around two hours to complete. The diving establishments are located at Govindnagar Beach No. 2, which is quite close to the Jetty. Remember that the last ferry to Elephant Beach departs from the jetty at noon and make your plans accordingly. You’ll have a long day ahead of you, but scuba diving in Havelock is highly recommended.

Day 4 of Andaman Itinerary:  Neil Island

Today we are going to leave for Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep). The Markuzz ferry from Havelock Jetty to Neil Island Jetty leaves at 10 a.m. and takes one hour. Neil Island is smaller than Havelock and has laid-back vibes. The island was inhabited only in the 1960s and has been slowly rising on the popularity charts due to its unexplored coral reefs, picturesque beaches, amazing biodiversity, and lush forests. There are three main beaches in Neil Islands – Sitapur Beach, Bharatpur Beach, and Laxmanpur Beach. Nestled between tropical forests and clear turquoise seas, the beaches look spectacular. Each one of them has its charm.

The sea around Bharatpur Beach is full of corals and schools of fish. It is the only place in the Neil Islands where you can enjoy water sports. However, snorkeling and scuba diving can be enjoyed on all three beaches. Sitapur Beach is also called “Sunrise Beach” as it offers spectacular sunrise views in the morning. The beach is known for its limestone formations. Laxmanpur Beach is a broad spur of white shell sand and you can find an abundance of corals and shells in the shallow, clear waters. The Natural Bridge, also called Howrah Bridge by the locals, is the highlight of Laxmanpur Beach. The bridge is made of natural rock formations. Most of the resorts on Neil Island are located on Bharatpur Beach. Stay overnight on Neil Island.

PS: You can go to Kalapathar Beach early in the morning before leaving for Neil Island to see a breathtaking sunrise. The beach is located on the southern side of Havelock and is approximately 6.5 kilometers from the jetty. It is easily accessible by car, taxi, or bike.

Day 5 of Andaman Itinerary: Port Blair and Ross Island

It is now time to return to Port Blair. The Markuzz Ferry, which runs from Neil to Port Blair, departs at 11:30 a.m. and takes one hour. On reaching Port Blair, we are going to visit Ross Island. The tiny island is only a kilometer from Port Blair and is easily accessible through a 15-minute boat ride from the Aberdeen jetty. The island closes at 3 p.m. for day visitors, so plan. You can still visit the island if you don’t get there in time for the last boat. Ferries depart at 4 p.m. for the light and sound display, which begins at 5:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased three days in advance. Ross Island is closed on Wednesdays.

For nearly a century, Ross Island served as the administrative headquarters for the Indian Penal Settlement. It had all the modern comforts procured by the Britishers until an earthquake struck the island in 1942. The ruins of a church, a bakery, a museum, a jail, a cemetery, and several other structures are scattered all over the island. Ross Island (recently named Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island) exudes a rustic and one-of-a-kind charm.  What impresses you the most is the myriad flora and fauna that can be found on the serene island. It is home to deer, peacocks, and a variety of other birds. The trees have reclaimed the island and wrapped their roots around the crumbling ruins, creating an eerie and intriguing sight. There are no cars allowed on the island, but you can explore the island in a golf cart if you don’t want to walk. Return to Port Blair for dinner and a night’s stay.

Day 6 of Andaman Itinerary: Fly Back

The flight to your next destination would most likely depart in the morning. Pack your belongings and head to the airport. It’s time to say goodbye to the Andamans.

PS: If you have an extra day, you can plan a visit to Baratang Island. However, be prepared for a long and exhausting day. I felt that it was not worth going to Baratang Island.

Things to know before visiting Andamans

  • The best time to visit Andamans is between November and March. The months of April and May can be quite warm, particularly in the afternoons. The weather begins to heat up and become humid in the following months. Monsoon is from June to September , so avoiding that season is better. March to June – 22°C to 33°C, June to September – 27°C to 30°C, October to Feb – 20°C to 30°C
  • Although the islands are in the same time zone as Bangkok, they follow Indian Standard Time. As a result, the day begins very early. Go to bed on time so that you can wake up early to make the most of the light.
  • Ferries must be reserved in advance because they are the sole way to travel between islands. All your carefully laid-out plans will go haywire if you can’t find a suitable ferry.
  • Only private ferries can be booked online and in advance. Government ferry tickets can only be purchased at the counter two days before the trip.
  • Boarding closes approximately 20 minutes before departure. Before that, you have to get your luggage scanned and your tickets verified.
  • Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, caps, an umbrella, flip-flops, a swimsuit, cover-ups, and mosquito repellent with you.
  • The locals are straightforward, honest, and trustworthy.

Andaman Itinerary

  • Getting vegetarian food is not a problem in Andamans.
  • The mobile network is extremely patchy, with no connectivity on smaller islands. For a stable connection, you need to rely on the hotel’s WIFI. The WIFI is sometimes only accessible in the hotel’s lobby.
  • Big hotels accept cards, but you’ll need cash for cabs, small eateries, tickets, and a variety of other small transactions. Payments with Digital Wallets are also accepted in many places.
  • Although there is no Uber or Ola in the Andamans, taxis are easily available. They usually have a set fare for each route and don’t bargain much. You will be offered package deals by most of the taxi drivers you come across.
  • Auto rickshaws are easily accessible on all Andaman Islands. Because the distances are short, it makes sense to choose this less expensive method of transportation.
  • Most beaches close at 5 p.m., and this is strictly enforced by the lifeguards patrolling the beaches.
  • If you are daring enough to kayak through the mangroves at night in Havelock, you will be able to view the bioluminescent plankton that makes the water shimmer every time the paddle dips in the water. The waters are said to be home to a few crocodiles, so go at your own risk.
  • Foreign visitors to the Andaman Islands are no longer required to get a “Restricted Area Permit” as of July 2018. Foreign visitors with a valid Indian tourist visa can now visit the Andaman Islands and stay for the duration of their visa.
  • Onge, Jarawa, Sentinelese, and Andamanese are the four tribes that live on Andaman. They can be fiercely hostile. Do not make interaction with tribals. It is strictly prohibited by the Indian government and is a punishable offense. This is the most effective way to cut off them from the modern world and allow them to carry on with their age-old traditions.

Where is the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India?

These islands are one of the eight union territories of India and are located in the Bay of Bengal. The group of islands is around 1300 km east of the Indian mainland.

Brief history of Andamans

There is archaeological evidence that these Indian islands have been inhabited for over 2,200 years. In fact, there are studies that trace the original human inhabitation to the current indigenous tribes of Andamans including the Andamanese, Nicobarese, and Shompen . However, there is nothing very significant in terms of historical events known about them.

The strategic location of these islands had made it an important naval point for many Indian rulers like the Chola dynasty . There are mentions of Ma-Nakkavaram or the great naked islands in some of the inscriptions found in Thanjavu r. King Rajendra Chola II in fact, used the islands to launch an attack against the Indonesian Srivijaya empire.

British Officers' Homes in ruins on Ross Island, Andamans

It was finally occupied by the Europeans in 1755 with the Danish East India Company taking it over. The British East India Company later, took over in 1789. They colonized it – first at Chatham Island and later moving it to Port Blair in 1858. This was the place used for the exile of the Indian freedom fighters during the Indian independence movement.

World War II saw a brief change of power when the Japanese took over. Later, the islands were returned to British control in 1945 and finally, transferred to India in 1950. Today, it is one of the eight Union territories of India and also, one of the best-kept secrets for travelers.

Facts about Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India

It would not be wrong to say that this Indian archipelago is quite enigmatic. Most travelers to India do not even consider it for a visit and for the ones in India, not much is known. Here are some interesting Andaman and Nicobar Islands information that will help familiarize you with the place. These Andaman facts will also, increase the wanderlust quotient.

Image of Andamans behind the old Indian 20 Rupees note

  • Do you know how many islands are there in Andaman and Nicobar archipelago? Well, there are 571 islands of which only 37 are inhabited by humans. They are broadly classified into North and Middle Andaman islands, South Andaman and Nicobar islands. The Andaman group is separated from the Nicobar group by the Ten Degree Channel.
  • Andaman and Nicobar islands also, finds a mention in the accounts of Marco Polo. He called the Nicobar as Necuverann while the Tamil rulers called it Nakkavaram .
  • The names – Andaman and Nicobar are believed to have originated from the Malay language . Andaman is derived from Handuman – the name for Lord Hanuman while Nicobar is said to have come in from Nakkavaram (the Tamil name).
  • One of the oldest and the most isolated tribes in the world – Sentinelese live on the North Sentinel island. They are not fond of humans and tend to shoot down visitors who attempt to land there. It is believed that there are 300 of them and they have lived here for almost 60,000 years. Definitely not one of those places to visit in Andamans 😉
  • India’s only active volcano is on Barren Island which is a part of Andamans.
  • The old Indian Rupee 20 has a picture of the Andaman Islands on it.
  • Nicobar Islands is the nesting ground for the World’s largest turtles – The Leatherback turtles.
  • Nicobar Islands also, yields a rare fruit called Pandunus or Nicobar Breadfruit . Not only is the fruit edible but parts of the plant are used for construction, mats and even a bathing brush.
  • Have you heard of the Coconut crabs? They are the World’s largest crabs and are found in Andamans. These huge creatures are also called as Robber crabs.
  • Last but not the least – the islands are actually closer to the Sumatra Islands in Indonesia (150 km) than the Indian mainland. They are also closer to Myanmar or Burma, just 180 km.

I bet now, you are raring to go and plan your trip to Andamans. Let’s get on with some practical information on the Andaman and Nicobar tourism to help you with that.

Tips to plan a trip to Andaman and Nicobar Islands

What is the best way to reach andaman.

Let’s begin the main section of this Andaman and Nicobar travel guide with the best way to get to this Union territory of India. Port Blair is the headquartre or capital of this archipelago with its own airport and port. Earlier there were two ways to get to Port Blair – by flight or by ship . However, now the Andaman travel by ship has become almost nil and there is no alternative but to take a flight to the Veer Savarkar airport in Port Blair.

The first glimpse of the islands on my flight to Andamans

There are now direct flights from Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata to Port Blair. Having said that I must warn you that there are limited flights to Port Blair and the air tickets for the same need to be booked well in advance to beat the last-minute exorbitant rates. Chennai and Kolkata have the maximum flights to Port Blair.

There are not many Andaman and Nicobar flights from Delhi and Mumbai. You might find one weekly direct flight but the rest are all flights with a layover.

To boost Andaman and Nicobar tourism, there are always additional special flights during the peak seasons – October to May . I would recommend keeping a price alert on these flights so that you can grab the best deal on the airfare, especially if there is a sale going on.

What is the best time to visit Andaman Nicobar?

Andaman islands are best visited between October to April

October to February is generally considered the best time to visit Andamans. This is when the weather is cooler and you can enjoy the gentle waves of the beach without any issue. March and April tend to get quite warm but you can still enjoy the islands and its activities without any hitch.

Avoid the Andaman trip after the 2 nd week of May right to mid-September . This is when the monsoons begin on the islands. The islands are prone to heavy rain and thunderstorms. You might even have to watch out for cyclones during this month. A lot of inter-island travel becomes limited owing to the stormy sea.

Andaman travel guidelines and permits

During my earlier Andaman trip in 2018, there were certain permits that were required for Andamans – mainly because it was a Union territory and a tribal area. This was largely for Foreign Nationals who required a Restricted Area Permit (RAP). To boost Andaman and Nicobar island tourism, this restriction has now been lifted and all foreigners (except those from Pakistan, Afghanistan and China) can visit Port Blair as well as the other popular Andaman islands freely.

The convoy to the Baratang Island, Andamans

There are a few offbeat islands like Baratang Island that require you to travel with a convoy as you travel through tribal areas. There are specific timings for these that I have written about in this post .

A few others like the Jolly Buoy island have permits as only a certain number of boats are allowed to go at a time. These permits need to taken in advance from the Andaman tourism office at Aberdeen Jetty in Port Blair.

How to do Island hopping between the best Andaman islands?

With over 500 islands, you can pretty much expect to do a lot of Island hopping. I would categorize this activity into two buckets – the first are the Islands where you stay and the second are islands that you visit as a day trip.

In this section of the Andaman and Nicobar travel guide, I will be sharing tips on how to reach these Andaman tourist places.

Best stay islands to be included in your Andamans trip plan

Port Blair is the headquarters and the main island that you will land in when you visit Andamans. Consider this as your home base. It is from here that you will be visiting all the other islands on this list.

The two islands besides Port Blair that you should consider staying in are Havelock Island (now called Swaraj Dweep ) and Neil Island (presently called Shaheed Dweep). These islands can only be accessed via a ferry from Port Blair. The ferries or liners are run by Government as well as Private operators. Earlier when I had visited, one could not pre-book the government ferries. You would need to go to Phoenix Jetty in Port Blair to stand in the queues before the departure.

Ferry Cruise to Havelock from Phoenix Jetty in Port Blair

However, this has changed in the recent years and you can book these Ferries online through this link . The price for the same is around 600 – 850 per seat for a ticket to Swaraj Dweep from Port Blair. The above website has the fares for all the other destinations. Government ferries are usually used by the locals and have limited tourist seats.

There are three main private operators for inter-island ferries – Makruzz, Nautica and Green Ocean . Of these, Makruzz is the most recommended. I used it to travel to Swaraj Dweep island when I visited Andamans.

Very comfortable seating and easy to book as you can do so online through here . It is advisable to book the seats as soon as it opens as the same gets filled very fast. Typically the booking opens two weeks before your scheduled date of departure. Alternately get your hotel in Havelock or Port Blair to help you with the booking.

There are very limited timings and cruises available to these islands – typically just four a day.

Andaman tour plan for the day trip islands

There are many islands around Port Blair that you can visit as a day trip. All you have to do is head to Aberdeen jetty to pick an operator and book instantly. Most hotels help you with the booking as well, so that you do not have to waste too much time.

Catch a boat or ferry to Ross Island from Port Blair

The boat operators typically offer you packages that include two – three islands and you can book at your convenience. There are group boats where you travel with other people as well as private boat hires. Ross Island, North Bay Island, Jolly Buoy etc are some places to visit in Andamans as a day trip.

One thing to note is that some islands like Jolly Buoy Island need a special permit . Only a limited number of people can go at a time to these islands. You will need to get this permit in advance from the Tourism Department counters at Aberdeen Jetty.

Where to stay in the Andamans? (Hotels in Andamans)

As mentioned earlier, the three main islands in Andamans that I recommend for a stay are  – Port Blair, Havelock Island and Neil Island.

Port Blair has plenty of options in all possible budgets for you to pick from. Being a small town, you can pick your stay anywhere here and you are likely to find the key attractions close to your hotel. I personally, picked Hotel Western Park at Delanipur Junction and found it quite convenient. Middle Point is another area close to this one that I found interesting – not too crowded but had enough shops and restaurants to keep you comfortable.

Wild Orchid resort in Havelock

Havelock and Neil Island, on the other hand, have limited stay options. Given that, they are naturally more expensive than the hotels in Port Blair. In fact, budget the cost of the stay on these islands into your Andaman trip cost.

I highly recommend booking these hotels in advance. Both – Havelock and Neil are small islands and most of the accommodation is by the beaches. You can stay on any of these beaches as they are all just amazing! On my trip, I stayed on the Vijaynagar beach in Wild Orchid Resort – a cute, small property with lovely wooden cottages and very comfortable beds. A luxury stay here as well as on Neil Island is the Barefoot resort . On Havelock, this island is on the famed Radhanagar beach.

You can book most of these hotels online when you plan your trip to Andamans. One tip that I recommend is that once you have booked your hotel, call them up and reconfirm your booking.

How to go around on the islands in Andaman? (Conveyance and transport)

Hire bikes to go around the islands - one of the tips in my travel guide to Andaman

Port Blair has plenty of options for your internal travel – hiring a 2-wheeler, cabs and auto rickshaws . A lot of travel companies attach themselves to you from the time you arrive. For travel within Port Blair, you can just use auto-rickshaws. You might plan on visiting places in Andaman and Nicobar Islands that are a little far off from Port Blair but manageable by road . Chidiya Tapu and Baratang Island are some examples. For these, it is best to hire a cab.

In Havelock Islands, there are no auto rickshaws and cabs on call. You have to rely on your hotel to help you with one. Alternatively, you can do what we did. We took the number of the cabbie who we found at the jetty when we reached Havelock. Whenever we required him, we would just call him. For the rest of the time, we hired a 2 wheeler and rode around ourselves. This really works well if you are attempting to plan a budget trip to Andaman.

Neil Island is even smaller than Havelock Islands and you do not really need a vehicle to move around.

What to eat in Andamans?

Coco Anju - my favorite multi-cuisine restaurant in Havelock, Andamans

You get a good mix of Bengali and South Indian cuisines in Andaman. At Havelock and Port Blair, you have plenty of continental food options too. If you are a foodie, you will absolutely love the choice of shacks and restaurants at Havelock. From Chinese to continental and Indian, they sure know how to reach your heart through your stomach. Two of my favorite places here are Anju-Coco Resto and Something Different .

Neil Island, on the other hand, has a limited choice of restaurants. You might just have to rely on the food provided in the hotel that you have booked.

Mobile connectivity and Wi- Fi – an essential tip in the travel guide to Andaman.

Back in 2018, there was a very limited Wi-Fi or cellular data service. Some places in Andaman like the Baratang Island and Havelock Island were almost no-signal zones. Airtel worked the best there. Even with that, I had to keep roaming around to get that one blip of signals. Booking hotels back then was also, difficult owing to this issue. Of course, the signal free zone had its perks too – like a distraction free holiday.

Limited connectivity in Andamans

However, things changed after PM Modi visited Andaman and Nicobar islands. Within months, cables were laid underwater from Chennai and today, you have 4G and in some cases, 5G connectivity on the key Andaman islands . Again, Airtel and BSNL work the best. Jio still has an issue and it is best not to rely on it.

Paying for various activities in Andamans

euro 870757 1920

There are plenty of ATMs available in Port Blair and Havelock . Neil Island too, has one or two of them. However, it is best to carry some cash from the start as during my visit, I found a lot of ATMs out of cash in Havelock.

With good mobile connectivity, these days UPI apps like Google Pay and PayTM also, work well. You can use these payment modes during your trip to Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Best Places to Visit in Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Now this can be a long long list but here are the ones that I highly recommend that you should include in your Andaman tour plan. I have also, written separate and detailed posts on a few of these Andaman tourist attractions, the links of which are included in the respective sections.

Cellular Jail in Port Blair - one of the places to visit in Andaman and Nicobar Islands

As I mentioned earlier, Port Blair going to be your base in Andaman and Nicobar island. Here are some of the key places that you must visit when in the city.

  • The Cellular Jail in Port Blair  – for its melancholic history and really unusual architecture. The stories within the walls can really chill you but also, interest and excite you. I also, recommend going in for their light and sound show. You can check this place out in detail through this post .
  • Corbyn’s Cove – a beach on the capital island where you can indulge in water sports – including parasailing and jet-skiing. However, I recommend this only if you are not heading to Havelock Island
  • Samundrika Museum – I am yet to write about this one but it is a small stop that helps you discover the cultural and biodiversity of these islands. It is managed by the Navy.
  • Anthropology Museum – Andamans is native to a lot of tribals and discovering their lifestyle is quite enlightening. No pictures were allowed here and hence, describing it all might be difficult. With mock tribal huts, exhibits of their food vessels, their tools and clothes and explanations of their festivities, I found time short for this museum

Chidiya Tapu

Chidiya Tapu - the best places for sunsets on Andamans in India

This is a day trip from Port Blair. At a distance of 30 km. Chidiya Tapu is the place to experience the best sunsets in Andaman. For bird watchers, the island is a paradise with tons of migratory and native birds . The native birds include rare species of woodpeckers, Andaman green pigeons and woodswallows. There are tons of hiking trails and picnic spots  – in short, a perfect day trip with nature.

Ross Island or Subhash Chandra Bose Island

The deer on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island

Ross Island is an island that leaves you wanting for more. With its overgrown root structures, old dilapidated buildings, green pastures and herds of friendly deer, you will find that time is not enough.  The island was initially used by the British as a residential base, which they later shifted to Port Blair. It is one of those Andaman islands that has to be done as a day trip from Port Blair . Check out how I became Lara Croft here .

North Bay island

The North Bay island is one of those Andaman tourist places that comes in combination with a visit to Ross Island. You can get to this island via the Aberdeen Jetty in Port Blair. The place is famous for water sports and you can even do scuba diving here.

Chatham Mills

Another one of those day trips from Port Blair where you can visit an ancient mill with history that leads back to World War II and the British.. This is where the first settlement of the British started with Archibald Blair. The Chatham Saw Mills is the oldest and possibly, the largest saw mill in Asia.

Note however, you can only visit it between 8.00 AM to 2.30 PM on all days except for Mondays and Thursdays.

Jolly Buoy Island

Remember – this is one island that has limited number of permits for boats. You can visit it from Wandoor Beach after you have got a permit from the tourism office. Personally, I feel it is one of the best Andaman islands with its unspoiled nature, crystal-clear water and colorful reefs.

Baratang Island

Limestone caves on Baratang Island

Baratang Island is one of those places that requires you to enjoy its unusual journey. I absolutely adored it – for its limestone caves, the mangrove forests and the whole experience of going in a convoy to reach the islands. You can also visit the bubbling mud volcano on this island. It is another day trip that needs to taken from Port Blair. It can be booked online through this link .

Ross and Smith Islands in North Andamans

The approach to this group of two islands was a little difficult in the past. However, now a new bridge and road is being built. The waters around these two islands are perfect for snorkeling – in fact a delight with the lovely coral world. What makes this visit unique is that if you reach here during low tides, you can actually cross over from one island to the other by wading in water.

Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)

Kalapathar Beach, Havelock Islands, Andamans

You cannot plan a trip to Andaman without including Havelock Island . The place was my little heaven with its crystal blue water and unspoiled beaches. If there is a place that I want to retire to right now, Havelock it will be. This is where you need to spend at least 2 – 3 nights.

Scuba Diving from Govindnagar Beach at Havelock Island

Not only is it perfect for families but it is one of those recommended places to visit in Andaman for a honeymoon. It is home to one of India’s Blue Flag beaches – Radhanagar Beach . This island is the best place to do scuba diving in Andamans. In fact, you can even do a PADI course during your three-day stay in Havelock island. Read more about this gorgeous island in this post.

Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)

Neil Island - one of the places to visit in Andamans for honeymoon

You cannot plan a honeymoon trip to Andaman without including Neil Island. It is another piece of Paradise where you can stay and engage in some water sports. The secluded air and the divine landscape of blue waters with artistic rocks adds that aura of serenity to the whole Andaman trip.

Water sports in Andamans

Water Sports in Andamns

Andamans offers you plenty of options for water sports. It is best known for scuba diving – which I highly recommend that you include in your Andaman trip plan. You can even enjoy a half-submarine ride or do a sea walk . They have even got the self-ride seakart activity that I have so far experienced only in Mauritius (and I loved it!)

Snorkeling, jet skiing, banana boat rides, parasailing are available in plenty. Remember to engage with certified PADI instructors for Scuba Diving . The best options are available at Havelock. There are plenty of dive schools here, one almost every 100 m. On my last visit, the shore dives started at INR 2500 and the boat dives started at INR 3500.

Posing for a picture with my hubby on my first scuba dive at Havelock Island

All these activities can be arranged by your hotels or you can even do it yourself by reaching an island and engaging an operator who has a shop on it. The rates for the same are pretty standard and are displayed at the entrance of a shop. Please ensure you listen to all the instructions carefully and keep safe while engaging in these water sports.

Alternatively, you can book some of these online through here

What to pack for your Andaman trip?

Packing for Andamans

Here is a list of essentials that you will need for your Andaman and Nicobar trip –

  • Cotton clothes and beachwear
  • Sand slippers
  • Flat shoes for your hiking excursions
  • A medicine kit with essential medicines
  • A wide-brim hat
  • Camera with extra batteries and memory cards
  • Binoculars, especially if you are keen bird watcher

What kind of Andaman Travel Package is available for planning a trip? And should you go for one?

There are two types of travel packages for Andamans available – standard and custom. The standard packages like this one include hotels and transport including the ferries between the islands. However, they do not have day-to-day activities as a part of their deal. These can be booked online. They may not have air travel included.

My new friend - the deer at Ross Island, Andamans

The customized Andaman travel packages are designed to suit your taste. There are several tour companies like Mini India that help you with this. They can even organize the activities and help you with the permits on Andaman islands. You can even ask them to book your air tickets.

Tour packages definitely help you cut down time on booking hotels and transport in Andaman. From my experience, booking ferries, different hotels on the islands does take a lot of time and involves a lot of follow-up. It is not difficult because I did it all by myself but if you are a busy and do not have the time to research, compare and book on your own – then go for the packages.

Lists of the best places to visit in Andaman are going to be never-ending and your time here is going to be so memorable that you will want to return over and over again. So, I hope you are already using these tips, searching for your flights to Andaman and booking your hotels Trust me, it is great to discover India’s Best Kept Secret!

Hey this is awesome. Loved all the pictures. Particularly you doing scuba is very sharp with colourful fishes around 🙂 Have you taken scuba diving lessons before?

Nope…this was my first time and I loved it . The first dives are always assisted.

pictures are amazing..

This is a comprehensive guide to Andaman’s’ trip.

Thank you. Glad you find it useful.

Very Useful Information

LOVE Andamans <3 Totally head over heels in love with it. This is a fab guide for first timers 🙂 Love the aerial shot! Superb

Thank you Divsi. Andamans just looked amazing from every angle.

What a great guide to everything one should know about Andamans! I love how you included important details like the ferry schedule, a specific packing list, and the need to have cash. And that’s quite a list of things to do — lots of variety. Your photos are also beautiful!

Thank you Tami. I know how difficult it was for me to get this info. So was glad to pass it on 🙂

A very informative post. Thanks for sharing!

I am not sure why Andamans were not on my radar before. You have definitely peaked my interests.

Thanks Heather. It is a hidden secret that not many talk of. I just revealed it for you 😉

My trip to Andaman is probably my best travel experience ever. And yes, the magic lies in the fact that its beauty is raw and pristine. Did you try ‘Underwater walking’ though? I loved it even more than Scuba diving to be honest. Love your post. Have a great day!

I have done underwater walking elsewhere but I definitely prefer scuba to it. 🙂 Glad you too had a blast in Andamans. Thanks for stopping by.

This is very interesting information. Thanks for sharing.

Great post keep up the good work.

You made great points why one should visit Andamans. Although I always want to be connected via social media, it will not be a problem for me if the internet connection there will be weak. I will just use my notebook and pen to take down notes and just connect online when I already have a stable internet. I believe that we can enjoy more of the place if we unplug from social media.

I agree, I think I enjoyed the place more because I had a digital detox. I would recommend it too. Cheers

A great travel guide.. and the pictures are great. We somehow missed Chidiya Tapu when we visited there.

Thank you Amrita. Hopefully the next time you can make it to Chidiya Tapu

Andamans and the North East of India are some of the places that still retain their pristine charm owing to lesser tourist footfalls. But it indeed is a Catch-22 situation, and soon we could see hordes of tourists overrunning these places. This is a very exhaustive guide to visit the Andamans and brings alive the natural beauty of the place too.

True, it is a catch 22. The only solution I see is self-awareness of the travelers – to be responsible and leave the place for it is. With that hope, I keep sharing the secrets 🙂

This is really a Great post and that scuba diving image is very impressive. The attractive colorful fishes can easily grab attention. Once again…Lovely Images.

Thank you Mohuya. Scuba diving was one enthralling experience and for me Andamans will always be special because of that.

I’d probably go for Port Blair which suits all budgets, although I’d check hotels everywhere first although this sounds like the best bet. I had to google where these Islands are, they look so beautiful!

Actually, I would highly recommend Havelock and if you book well in advance, you can manage a few budget accommodations. Cheers

This is a wonderful guide to the Andamans. It is both informative AND inspiring. You really show off how much the Andamans have to offer. From pristine beaches, to secluded islands, to historical sites, to watersports – it’s so irresistible. Thanks for all the tip for foreign nationals too.

Thank you guys. You should definitely head here. Cheers

Pinned!! The Andamans was already high on our bucket list and now your beautiful pictures have made us even more desperate to get there! Port Blair sounds like a great option! Thanks for all your tips and recommendations!

Would highly recommend Havelock too. Hope you plan a trip soon.

This is really the be all and end all post with all details required to visit Andaman. Super impressed. Well done .

Thank you Prerna

Amazing guide that covers things I wouldnt even have known I needed to know! The island day trips look fabulous! Youve really covered everything!

Glad that you found this useful Stephanie. Hope you plan a trip soon.

Thanks for a very detailed guide! You did a great job!

Sounds like it is a bit difficult to get there…but like you said, that leads to part of the charm! I imagine the scuba diving is amazing – I would love to dive in this part of the world some day. (although it would be hard to get my husband here once he hears about the wifi situation!)

I would tell your partner that he needs to digitally detox and that too in a paradise :D. I would highly recommend visiting here Katie.

Andamans is a beautiful place. Some of the beaches of Andamans are comparable to that of Western Thailand. We had a great time while at Andamans back in 2012.

Yep, am sure you did. The beaches are really amazing here. And yes, quite similar to Thailand :D/ Cheers

Wow! I think that you had a blast in Andamans. No way to get bored as there will be many activities to do. I love the banana boat ride. Will certainly consider these activities in the near future.

I am sure you will love the pristine beaches here. Thanks for stopping by Ana.

I didn’t know exactly were Andaman and Nicobar islands were until know. Of course I didn’t know as well they are Indian islands, from the map it could seem they belong to Malaysia or Myanmar. A really exhaustive guide, touching all the most important points if you plan to go there. it must be a real adventure to sail fro Chennai to Port Blair by boat!

Oh, India has a lot of islands. These are on the east and then we have the Lakshwadweep ones on the West. Both unexplored and pristine. You should definitely check them out.

I will, thanks 😉

Ami, thanks for this post. I would refer to it while planning for my trip. The links you have embedded in your posts are very handy.

Thank you Saru. Glad you found the post useful.

Very helpful guide to Andamans for first timers (like myself)! I love when posts have really helpful logistics like the ferry schedule and the need to have cash. The water sports look like I’d have a lot of fun there!

Indeed. The place is just so amazing. Happy that you found the article useful. And hope it helps you plan your trip better.

I thought some of the places sounded familiar, then I remembered some of your past posts.

I love the fact you can dive there, if only it was a little cheaper!

I thought INR 3500 was quite a reasonable price. The other beach destinations have it much higher :P.

This is a nice set of tips! Your photos of blue seas make me want to to go there asap. Island hopping sounds like a lot of fun. I all for going by air … 3 days sailing is a bit too much 🙂 🙂 Not having done diving, I think the sea walks would be something I might be interested in .

It is a gorgeous gorgeous place Nisha. Hope you plan a trip soon.

What a lovely set of tips Ami..Andaman has always been on my list for years somehow it just doesnt work for me when I plan. But your experience of water activities has tempted me again. I would love to try sailing to Andaman same I did in Lakshadweep as well 🙂 As always you are good at writing travel guides!

Thank you Rutavi. You are sure to enjoy Andamans.

India is full of amazing places! I would love to.see this one one day

And I am sure you will love this one. Thanks Monika for stopping by

That’s an indepth post! Thanks for all the details. Its indeed sad that we consider the Jarawa like some leopard spotting. But I really hope we consider them a leopard in all ways, I mean, we wouldn’t dare to get into the forest and interact with a leopard!!!

I agree Bhushavali. Glad you think the same way too. I do hope better sense prevails.

Andamans looks awesome and I’ve never heard about it previously to this post 🙂 Definitely will check it out

And I know you will be pleasantly surprised by it. Cheers

I wonder how crowded it is getting now? I visited in off peak season in 2012 and it was a bliss!

Not that crowded. Still continues to be a secret.

Great guide to Andamans… I’d love to visit this place at some point. Love the islands and the clear turquoise sea!

Thank you Ariane. I am sure you will enjoy it.

What a gorgeous place, I have never even heard of this place, nor would I have known how to get a permit or that there was even great diving there! Super informative and looks amazing !

Thank you. Glad to be of help. 🙂

Andamans is a great place for vacation. The beaches reminds one about the beaches of Western Thailand. We didn’t go for for a scuba dive in Andamans.

So true, the beaches are quite like the Thailand ones except these are a little quieter 😀

wow, this looks amazing. never knew this place is part of India. I always thought that this is neighboring county of India. It looks amazing. I would love to visit it someday! cheers!

Like I mentioned, it is our secret which I have just shared with you. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by Sophi

What a great guide! this place looks absolutely stunning 🙂 Thanks for sharing

Never heard about Andamans but after I have read you guide it seem to be a lovely place to explore with a lot of activities!

It sure is a lovely place Miriam. Thanks.

It’s good to know about the special permits required and all the little details that you might come across. The island hopping sounds absolutely incredible as a holiday. There seems to be so much in the way of activities on the islands.

True and it never feels rushed. It is a wonderful place to visit.

Hey… I am from Germany and I want to visit India. Can you please tell me the best places to visit in India?

Thanks Anna for writing it. There are tons of options. Depends on your taste and your interests – beaches, heritage, adventure. Let me know what exactly you need so that I can help you accordingly.

This is going to be my guide when I travel to Andaman. The island is so fascinating that I plan to do a trip wherein I can cover as much as possible. My only worry is not to miss on the ferry ticket bookings, neither to end up spending too much time on the same. Thanks for the tips around it.

Glad to be of help Neha. Cheers

what a great info..very good guidance. this is absolutely stunning. very good place for vacation. thanks for sharing.

Andaman is on my list for this year. I believe the Andaman archipelago of islands are still not that touristy like other places in India. Your well compiled and detailed guide is really going to help me out while planning my trip.

Glad to be of help. Andamans is just lovely coz it is not as touristy .:)

I have always wanted to visit Andaman and Nicobar and I once even planned a trip but I can’t remember what stopped me. The view from the plane window looks beautilful! Did you get to see any swimming elephants by the way?

It took me 3 trip plans and 2 near bookings to get here. It is a sign that you need to get there soon. And no, did not see any swimming elephants 🙂

Andaman is a beautiful place… With those watersports and fun makes for so much fun. Loved the way you have captured it.

Thank you Rashmi and Chalukya. This place was very special indeed

This is such a perfect guide to the Andaman and Nicobar islands with all the important information. I am planning a trip here this year and this article will come in handy. Beautiful place, cant wait to head there

You will find it absolutely pristine and gorgeous. Have a good trip Tamshuk

Your post made me nostalgic about my visit to Andaman and Nicobar few years ago. I only liked Havelock Island and did my first scuba diving and snorkeling there. Though I didn’t like Neil Island. It was a total disaster. In Port Blair, I only liked Cellular Jail and its evening light show.

The light and sound show here was one of the best I have seen in India. Definitely worth the sit. Glad you have had a pleasant time at Andamans. Cheers

I would love to visit the Adamans islands. I have heard about them a few years ago for the first time and immediately thought to myself that it’s pure paradise there. I hope to make it sometimes soon, it was about time to head over to the South of India as well, after visiting the North 3 times.

Thank you Joanna. The south of India has a lot of splendid places to be discovered. Hope you plan a trip soon

Thank you Joanna. There are a lot of splendid places in the south waiting to be explored. Hope you plan a trip soon.

Gorgeous images and a comprehensive guide. Andamans has long been on my bucketlist. Will hopefully get there soon.

Amen for that and hope you can head there soon. Cheers

I am planning a visit this year with parents. Very informative blog. Wanted to know if I will get room on arrival or should I pre book it? And are there rooms available under the budget of Rs. 1000 a night? Do let me know. Thanks

Rooms have a limited availability -and thus, prebooking is advised. Also, rooms under 1000 are available but you need to be able to figure a lot of these when you reach there as they are not really listed on the internet. Cheers

Ross Island looked so amazing, the andamands look so amazing, the whole permit thing would and is putting me off

The permit thing is actually not that tough. It sure is an amazing place and I would so encourage you to visit it.

The Andamans is one of my favorite places to go scuba diving. I’d highly recommend a live-aboard experience for the best value and time spent underwater!

I agree, I hope to get there again and do the same all over. Thanks for stopping by Henry

I knew there is a lot more to India than the four major cities I’ve visited. I hope I could visit again to see the other side of India.. and I love the strict regulations that keep and maintain Andamans. The government and the people must be putting really good measures to ensure the paradise remains a paradise to last.

Thanks Joan. Though the restrictions are more owing to its strategic location. There is so much more to India. You got to come back again!

Your scuba diving pics made me nostalgic about my trip to Andaman islands when my father was the Secretary Tourism in the islands. I did water sports, drove water scooter, snorkeling and scuba diving. While diving, i touched the base of the shallow part of the ocean (around 6 meter) and was so proud of myself! I was patting myself on the back as people watched me with amusement!

(Ambuj Saxena)

I can well imagine that joy. I loved Scuba here. Sigh! I wanna go back again! Thanks for stopping by Ambuj

I must say this is such a comprehensive guide that I cannot help but compare it with the last article that I just read from another blog where the key information is missing. Great job. This is the first time I’ve heard of Andamans and it looks like a lovely place to visit in India.

Thank you Marge. I am glad you find it useful.

Great post, Ami. We are planning a trip to Andaman this year. No network and wi-fi sounds both exciting and scary at the same time. Unfortunate that Andaman does not have it’s own cuisine. Thanks for the tips. Will keep them in mind.

You are bound to have fun here irrespective of no network or specialty food. Just go for it, Cheers

I like the motor riding as one way to transport from one place to another. The motorcycles also look cool. underwater activities will also never, haha plus don’t forget to put a sunscreen on! x

Yes, the sunscreen is an absolute must, especially since you spend so much time on those gorgeous beaches. Thanks Cathy.

Scuba diving is the one which I’m looking for so many years. Will definitely make to trip to Andaman for Scuba diving. Wonderful images which makes everyone to plan a trip to Andaman

THank you so much. Hopefully this will help you plan your trip better.

looking at pictures and post, Andaman is high on my list of places to visit in India.

Andamans is our hidden secret. A definite must visit

Very informative post! A well explained post on how to reach, where to stay , what to see and where to eat Andaman, i have ever read till now. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Glad to help Sahitya. Share it around for those who are seeking information

Thanks for the informative post Ami. Looks amazing! I’m looking forward to visiting India one day and possibly some scuba. Looking forward to your next post 🙂

Thank you Lance. I hope you can visit here soon. Cheers

Andaman and Nicobar islands is definitely the best tourist location. The beautiful sceneries and the adventures type activities surely mesmerizes us.

Untouched beauty and I hope it stays that way.

Andaman and Nicobar islands is such an underrated place. Would love to visit it someday 🙂

I agree and you should visit it soon.

It was very lovely to see such a great guide to Andaman Islands.

Thank you. Glad you liked the guide

Plan andaman trip on your own-low budget and without package.

  • Taxis are insanely expensive in Andaman.
  • Uber/Ola are NOT available in port blair yet and all taxi operators work with an overpriced, fixed deal like 2 hours/20kms- Rs 400 etc.
  • Distance and time is from Garage to Garage, not between your pickup and drop point.
  • When we wanted to go to Corbyn’s beach from Netaji stadium, fixed rate for taxi was Rs 1200. (about 12 kms round trip, while we hail an auto for Rs 100 one way and Rs 150 return - I called same auto driver to come back and pick us up as it was night and no other auto could be found).
  • Airport pickup and drop in an Ertiga cost us Rs 400 each (Airport is less than 3kms from hotel). In Chennai, I can travel 13-14 kms for half that amount.
  • In Havelock, for a 14 km journey (our scuba diving spot- Sea Shell Resort, Havelock, 1 km from jetty to Radhanagar beach and drop back to jetty) cost us Rs 1000 in a Tata Sumo. We were told peak season rate is Rs 1400. A bus ticket could have costed Rs 12 per person one way, but we didn’t have the time.

Something doesn't seem right here. I found the fares in Andamans cheap actually. I am sure you checked with more than one drivers, no? 400 for the airport pick-up is too much. We took an Ertiga, the 4km journey cost us 100 bucks. That's what the driver quoted. We paid the same from the Phoniex Jetty to the airport. You btw, have made a killing at the return fares ;) Cheers, Rajiv

Wonderful post! Very informative!

how to plan andaman trip without package

Its very helpful post specially for those who always love to travel themselves.

how to plan andaman trip without package

A very helpful post ... we did opt for tour package and paid 12K per person excluding flights in 2013. Our driver who came to pick us up from airport said we paid a very hefty amount and share his contact details to book directly if we had to rent car on our next visit. Next time do visit Baratang Island -- limestone caves there are amazing and Jolly Bouy island is spectacular ..

Please give his no. we are planning to go in december.

Not sure if the person who commented above will visit these comments to reply. Check with behindtrips.com they had some good package

Good Information, Like you did i also used to book the flights directly whenever there is a sale and hotels(internationl) from booking.com or agoda.com, within india my experience with stayzilla in recent is worst, i prefer makemytrip or yatra would be better or sometimes direct booking. Many times i observed sometimes we have advantage with our own planning and disadvantage also compare to local travel agents. They get discount prices in hotels and tickets compared to us This time i have planned to book local travel from Portblair through Traveltriangle.com i got a quote of Rs.13500 pp for 5 days which inclusive of hotel, all entry, boat, local transport basically except food. Seems to be work lucrative. As you mentioned above if we are only two then local transport cost will go for toss . I booked ticket for 3rd week of october, chennai to portbalir for Rs.4622 ,taking your example Rs.1700 for food,Scooba dive Rs.4000 which works out to be Rs.24022 will translate to Rs.4764 per head per day, in the above case for three days which works out to be Rs.6666 . Advantage is we are staying in beach resort, Havlock Island and covering one day trek to mount harriet, Not finding any disadvantage. Let me go and update once i finish the travel. PS: Same thing i am doing for 7 day srilanka trip in next week, as i will be staying in 5 cities .

Good to know. Hope your trip went very well. Sorry, couldn't reply earlier..

how to plan andaman trip without package

Really very useful information Nidhi. Thank you. Next time if possible, try ship journey from Chennai to PortBlair or back :)

Thanks. Time is big factor for ship, also never heard of commercially viable ship option..

Grt and informative post ..For Frequent travelers like us , booking fixed itinerary packages is not a viable option economically . And yes researching on our own and freedom to roam at own pace is the real fun

Perfect timing as I plan my trip

@Ami- Have a nice trip @Chandresh- yes. Thanks @Vi Ra He: Timing is the concern. Will consider it though @Swati- Good to know. How many days?

@Rajiv: When was your visit? We asked hotel staff to arrange transport- not sure if they quoted excess- I checked few websites, where rates were similar. Of course one can find a taxi which is on its return journey during which driver might be happy to offer a cheaper ride. @Jyotirmoy: Thanks @Dhananjay: Have a nice trip. Thanks for sharing your observations. Good to know about the deal you've got. It seems great deal. It is always good to research more- local operators can offer better deal than generic travel portals based in mainland. Enjoy.

nice information, thanks a lot

You're welcome

I am planing a trip to Andaman. Very detailed information at one place. Found to be very useful. Appreciated. To get such an information, normally we need to visit dozens of web sites.

I wanted to ask you that Camping is possible in Port blair, havelock or another tourist island? Or is it possible to stay in Any temple or gurudhawa for a night. I have many days in andaman and i wanted to explore a lot but my budget is not that much. Am a student and going there alone with my savings only. I searched the web a lot and seems these things aint possible there, if so i'll cut my trip duration to 3-4 days i guess rebook a return flight for sooner date. I'll wait for your reply and opinions. Thanks!

I don't think camping is a good idea- haven't heard of anyone doing it. You will get cheap places in Port Blair

It is very good information and experience which is u share.thanks

Can you please share taxi driver's number?

One I have doesn't seem to working now. Check with your hotel, they will advise.

How to plan a Andaman trip - A complete Andaman Travel Guide

How to plan an andaman trip - a complete andaman travel guide.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands, located in the Bay of Bengal, are a slice of paradise on earth. With their pristine beaches, turquoise waters, lush green forests, and abundant marine life, these islands offer a memorable vacation experience. Planning a trip to the Andaman Islands can be exciting, but it's important to have a well-structured itinerary to make the most of your time there. In this complete Andaman travel guide, we will take you through all the essential steps required to plan your dream trip to this tropical paradise.

Step 1: Deciding When to Visit Andaman

The best time to visit the Andaman Islands is between October and May when the weather is pleasant and ideal for various water activities. The monsoon season, from June to September, should be avoided as heavy rainfall and rough seas can limit outdoor activities.

Step 2: Choosing the Duration of Your Trip

Decide how many days you can allocate for your Andaman trip. A minimum of 5-7 days would allow you to explore the main attractions of Port Blair, Havelock Island, and Neil Island. If you have more time, you can consider adding other islands like Ross Island, Baratang Island, or Long Island to your itinerary.

Step 3: Getting There

To reach the Andaman Islands, you can either take a flight or a ship. Flights are the most convenient and time-saving option, with regular flights available from major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata. The Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair is the main entry point to the islands. Ships are also available from Chennai, Kolkata, and Visakhapatnam, but the journey can take up to 3 days.

Step 4: Accommodation

The Andaman Islands offer a variety of accommodation options to suit every budget. From luxury resorts to budget guesthouses, you can find something that fits your preferences. Port Blair, Havelock Island, and Neil Island have a wide range of hotels and resorts catering to different needs.

Step 5: Exploring Port Blair

Start your Andaman trip by exploring the capital city, Port Blair. Visit the historic Cellular Jail, which played a significant role in India's freedom struggle. Other must-visit attractions in Port Blair include the Anthropological Museum, Samudrika Naval Marine Museum, and Corbyn's Cove Beach. You can also indulge in water sports like snorkeling and scuba diving at North Bay Island and Ross Island.

Step 6: Discovering Havelock Island

Havelock Island, known for its stunning beaches and coral reefs, is a must-visit destination in the Andamans. The Radhanagar Beach, often ranked among the best beaches in Asia, is a highlight of Havelock. You can also visit the Elephant Beach for snorkeling or scuba diving. Take a boat trip to explore the nearby islands of Neil Island, Ross Island, and Inglis Island.

Step 7: Unwinding at Neil Island

Neil Island is a tranquil paradise known for its serene beaches and relaxed atmosphere. Rent a bicycle and explore the beaches of Laxmanpur, Bharatpur, and Sitapur. Witness mesmerizing sunsets and indulge in some delicious seafood at the local restaurants. Neil Island offers the perfect setting for a peaceful getaway.

Step 8: Trying Adventure Sports

The Andaman Islands offer exciting adventure sports for thrill-seekers. From scuba diving and snorkeling to jet skiing and glass-bottom boat rides, there are plenty of options to choose from. Explore the diverse marine life, vibrant coral reefs, and underwater caves for a memorable experience.

Step 9: Experiencing the Local Culture and Cuisine

Immerse yourself in the local culture of the Andaman Islands by visiting the indigenous tribal villages. Learn about the unique traditions, arts, and crafts of the tribes. Don't forget to savor the local Andamanese cuisine, which includes seafood delicacies like crab curry, fish tikka, and coconut prawns.

Step 10: Essential Travel Tips

  • Carry enough cash as ATMs might not be easily accessible on some islands.
  • Don't forget to carry your sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.
  • Take necessary precautions while engaging in water sports and follow the instructions of trained professionals.
  • Respect the natural beauty of the islands and do not litter.
  • Observe and respect the local customs and traditions of the indigenous tribes.

Planning a trip to the Andaman Islands requires careful consideration of various factors like the best time to visit, the duration of your trip, and the attractions you wish to explore. This complete Andaman travel guide provides you with all the information you need to plan an unforgettable vacation to this tropical paradise. Whether you want to relax on the pristine beaches, indulge in thrilling water sports, or immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage, the Andaman Islands have something for everyone. So pack your bags, book your tickets, and get ready for an incredible journey to this enchanting destination. Don't forget to share this guide with your fellow travel enthusiasts who dream of exploring the Andaman Islands!

Life is a Vacation

Stories about travel and living, top tips and itinerary to plan a trip to andaman.

Andaman Islands in Bay of Bengal off the Eastern Coast of mainland India is a sight to behold with gorgeous beaches, pristine waters and unending white sands dotted with mangroves. Towards the north of the islands there are mud volcanoes, lime stone caves, giant turtle nesting grounds and abundant marine life in the coral reefs beneath the crystal pristine sea. I took long walks in the islands that I visited and in one instance a short dinghy ride in the sea reminded me of Roald Dahl’s escapades to the islands on summer afternoons. I have attempted to create a near exhaustive  Andaman Travel Plan Guide for everyone planning to visit the islands; to decide on places to visit based on their preferences, choices to plan a suitable itinerary and whether to plan on their own or opt for a package tour.

Andaman is not Goa and I specifically write this since I have over heard mumbling and grumbling on the lack of night life, food and facilities. It still retains its quiet and peaceful culture and I hope it remains that way. The waves do not come roaring down the coast in most beaches and is pretty much calm and demure. I love this delicate beauty of the sea; lazily stretched out over miles and rippling in different shades of blue. It has a soothing effect on the mind; something that instantly washes off wordly worries.

PortBlair-Aberdeen

About Andaman

The 300 big and small islands of Andaman probably date back thousands of years. Most of these islands are not inhabited even today and pretty much remain inaccessible. The indigenous people of Andaman (Ja rawa, Sentinelese, Great Andamanese, Onge are aboroginal tribes) appear to have African origin and have inhabited the island from time immemorial until the British landed in the 18th Century followed by people from mainland India and Japanese (during WWII)

The people living in the many inhabited islands now, are mostly descendants of the people convicted under Imperial British Law during independence, post partition refugee settlers from Bangladesh who were adopted and accepted by the Union of India and provided land in the islands for livelihood, people of Tamil origin who came to work in as laborers or set up small businesses and the people who came in from mainland India for government jobs.

Port Blair the capital is of Andaman is trying to be modern in step with rest of India but is still largely devoid of snazzy malls, multiplex theatres and ostensible western culture. After walking around the Bazaars in Port Blair it was pretty apparent that the Island economy is driven by Government jobs and of late travel and construction; the latter fueling the former building roads, hotels, resorts and other infrastructure.

Andaman Havelock Island

How to Reach Andamans

The best mode of transport is to fly to Port Blair from Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore. The option to travel by ship from Kolkata and Chennai but is not the preferred mode as air fares just got affordable.

The early tourists mostly came from Kolkata and Chennai sailing ship from the harbors and sustaining the ride across choppy waters for 2 to 3 days since the airfare on the national carrier was well beyond reach. With the liberalization of the civil aviation sector in India; private airlines set up operations and with competitive fares being offered for advance purchase of tickets; a holiday to Andaman just got affordable and the tourism sector opened up.

Best Time to Visit Andamans

December to March is the ideal time to visit. The monsoon months between June and August are best avoided. The weather is pleasant and warm and the sea and its a pleasure to soak in the sea.

What to see and Which are the Places to Visit

There is something in it for everyone in Andaman from a child to a senior citizen. These are highlights of some of the most visited destinations in Andaman Islands

  • Cellular Jail , a pilgrimage to India’s Independence Movement
  • Chatham Saw Mill; Asia’s oldest mill supplied wood to Buckingham Palace
  • Havelock Island which catapulted Andaman to the Global Travel Map
  • Neil Island ; A Village by the Sea
  • Ross Island where History speaks through the Ruins
  • Jolly Buoy Island for corals and marine life (seasonal – December to May)
  • Baratang for limestone caves, mangroves and mud volcano
  • Ross and Smith Island off Diglipur
  • Turtle Nesting in Ramnagar Beach off Diglipur (seasonal-December to early March)
  • Hut Bay and Little Andaman are open to Public but the accessibility is yet to improve

What are the adventure activities available

Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, Sea Walk and much more are offered from the islands in Andaman. Here is a Quick Guide to Choose Adventure Activities in Andaman

How to Travel around the Islands

Ferries are available to travel between Islands and the private ones though more expensive than the Government Ferry are comfortable and on time. I traveled on Makkruzz and Makkruzz Gold and found them to be very comfortable and of intenational standard. I would strongly advise that the Inter Island Ferry Tickets be purchased online in advance. Click to check ferry schedule and purchase online.

Local Travel in the islands is best done by renting a bike or cycle. In Port Blair or other islands autos and hired cars charge on a flat rate on a point to point basis. It will appear exorbitant if compared to kilometres but then life in the remote islands is not easy and the cost of fuel and other things are pretty high. Drivers are in most cases polite and honest but due to lack of exposure do not expect them to be very professional and trained for a service industry. Speak to them with respect and they will do the job.

What kind of Food Options are available in Andaman

There is no distinct cuisine for Andaman and remains as a mixture of North Indian, Bengali and Tamil cuisine given the population. I went around eating from different places and the food is okay but definitely not a Foodies Paradise as would be expected given the proximity to the sea. I found Lighthouse in Port Blair serving some good crabs and fish. I am hopeful that with increasing tourism footfall the culinary prowess will improve in the various restaurants.

Choosing the Perfect Travel Itinerary for Andamans

Apart from the time on hand, budget and the number of people traveling; the most important question will be to decide “What Kind of Traveler are You”  and your preferences. An ideal trip would be a mix of heritage and nature in the form of sea, coral reefs and adventure activities. Most people speak Hindi, Bengali and Tamil in the islands.

  • Mixed Bunch of people including small children –                                     5 to 7 day itinerary
  • Beach Bums wanting to spend time by the sea and just chill –                 5 Day Itinerary
  • Honeymooners/ Luxury  Travelers      –                                                     5 Day Itinerary
  • Adventure seeker looking for Scuba and Snorkeling etc                          7 Day Itinerary
  • Seeking off the beaten Track Experience-                                                7 Day Itinerary
  • Group wanting to get an exhaustive flavor of Andamans-                         9 Day Itinerary
  • Solo Tripper looking for authentic experience-                                          9 Day Itinerary ++

Andaman Havelock Island

Andaman Trip Itineraries

After a recent trip to Andamans; some seen and some unseen locations; I came up with this list of different itineraries which can help in trip planning. Keep these facts in mind while planning the dates

  • Ross Island is closed on Wednesdays
  • Jolly Buoy Island is closed on Mondays and is open between December and May. During other times the trips are made to nearby Red Skin Island
  • Ross and Smith Island is closed on Wednesdays
  • Turtle Nesting in Ramnagar Beach and elsewhere is between December and Mid-March
  • Ross Island and Cellular Jail both have Light and Sound Show. Ross Island is a Laser Show on the history of Ross Island and Cellular Jail is a simple light and sound show all about the independence movement of our Freedom Fighters
  • Chatham Saw Mill closes for outsiders at 2pm
  • You will not find Jolly Buoy Island in most packaged tours. The number is regulated and as heard from an official there is little or no commission offered to 3rd part agents. This is hearsay and it may be incorrect.
  • North Bay Island near Ross Island is best left out since Jolly Buoy, Havelock and Neil offer better views. The only reason can be for that Dolphin Boat Ride or Semi Submarine which in my opinion are marketing gimmicks with low value for money. I say this with authority since I have taken the Dolphin Boat Ride and regretted the time and money spent.

Super Short -3 Night 4 Day Trip Itinerary

  • Day 1 – Port Blair (Cellular Jail / Ross Island)
  • Day 2 – Early Morning Ferry to Havelock Island; Spend the day in Havelock
  • Day 3 – Havelock Island to Port Blair in the evening
  • Day 4 – Depart from Port Blair

  • Day 7 – Neil Island to Port Blair. Afternoon Museum Trip and Chatham
  • Day 8 – Depart from Port Blair

Adventure- 7 Night 8 Day Trip Itinerary

Most Scuba Diving Certification Courses are for 2 to 4 days. This trip can be shortened and some time spent on traveling to Neil Island

  • Day 4 – Scuba Diving Certification in Havelock Island
  • Day 5 – Scuba Diving Certification in Havelock Island
  • Day 6 – Scuba Diving Certification
  • Day 7 – Scuba Diving Certification ; 4pm Ferry to Port Blair

Off the Beaten Track- 7 Night 8 Day Trip Itinerary

The popular destinations of Havelock and Neil have been excluded from this itinerary since the off beat traveler is seeking a different experience. Ross and Smith Island and the beaches in Rangat/ Diglipur offer a pristine sea side experience. For the

  • Day 3 – Port Blair to Mayabunder via Baratang and Rangat. Stop for Limestone Cave in Baratang; Aamkunj and Dhaninallah in Rangat
  • Day 4 – Mayabunder to Ross and Smith Island. Night Halt at Diglipur

Going Beyond the Generic- 9 Night 10 Day Trip Itinerary

This is the most exhaustive trip of Andamans. If you are not up to trekking in Saddle Peak then adjust the day in Havelock Island. If you have seen pictures of a sand bridge when the sea recedes shot in Andaman ie the unmissable Ross and Smith Island.

  • Day 3 – Early Morning Ferry to Havelock Island; Spend the day in Havelock

  • Day 8- Saddle Peak Trek in Diglipur, local beaches and limestone caves in Diglipur
  • Day 9- Diglipur to Port Blair. Last minute shopping in Aberdeen Bazaar of Port Blair.
  • Day 10- Depart from Port Blair

Self Execution OR Package Tour OR Customized Option

After deciding on the itinerary; the next big question is whether to opt for a package tour; go ahead and book everything on your own or simply look for a customized option. There are pros and cons of all options.

  • Neil Island
  • You can alternatively look at the Government Properties in all the locations. Its a bit of a hassle but very cheap for some of the best locations.
  • Also look at the properties of the semi government ANIIDCO
  • Buy Ferry Tickets online for Havelock Island and Neil Island from
  • Local Travel in these small islands is easy by hired 2 wheelers, autos and cars
  • Visit to Jolly Buoy requires a permit to be taken in advance during peak times. Approach your hotel or any local tour operator and obtain it.
  • Tickets for adventure activities are available on the spot. There is absolutely no need to buy that in advance. For Scuba Diving courses and certification, research online, check out the providers in Havelock and decide whom to choose
  • If air tickets are purchased 2 months in advance a return ticket to Port Blair is in the range of Rs 9000 to Rs 12000 as on date
  • All inclusive hotel, local travel including ferry rides and food will be around Rs 20000- Rs 22000 per person assuming mid range hotels for Popular 5 Night Trip for 2 persons.
  • In addition, Water Sports Acitivities can be Rs 500 to Rs 3500 depending on activity
  • Make My Trip Andaman Holidays
  • Experience Andamans
  • Semi Government ANIIDCO

Self Planning vs Packaged Tours: What Should You Opt for While Visiting Andaman?

Self Planning vs Packaged Tours: What Should You Opt for While Visiting Andaman?

Traveling and packaged tours seem to have a bittersweet relationship. While we all want to travel and make a good deal out of it, the focus has now moved onto experience over the  maximum number of spot visits . The idea of traveling is changing in favor of self-planning and Andaman is no exception to that.

While packaged tours of Andaman are still the most tried and trusted way of traveling in the islands, the idea of backpacking through the island with your self-planned trip isn’t alien at all. In fact, Andaman with its varied experiences lying in close proximity to each other seems like a great place to do a self-planned tour. You can simply hop onto islands and do the thing you like and leave out what isn’t convenient for you.

The places and activities in Andaman are numbered but the range is great if you know what you are looking for. So, if you are a nature lover you would know that you want to spend more time in Baratang  Parrot Island, Long Island, Little Andaman, and the pristine coral reef beaches like Redskin and Jolly Buoy. History and heritage buff on the other hand would choose a more detailed visit to the Cellular Jail , Ross Island, and Viper Island over a regular tourist. Similarly, an ocean and wildlife enthusiast will spend more time scuba diving and snorkeling the different reefs and experience rare things like bioluminescence, mangrove intertidal walks, etc. A hiking and trekking enthusiast will simply go for the tough treks like the Saddle Peak (the highest mountain of Andaman), the Mount Harriet trek, and many others.

Thus the opportunities for a self-planned trip in Andaman are quite varied and often more beneficial for a traveler in Andaman as it offers you an ideal deal in a place which you are unlikely to visit regularly. Packaged tours of Andaman may not seem that ideal in such scenarios as you might not get all the experiences you want to have.

So, in a way you have to go for many more trips and many more packaged tours and sometimes customized package tours which might not be feasible for all. Self-planning reduces these bottlenecks and makes your Andaman traveling more happening if you know how to do it properly.

When & How Self Planning Works?

So, the biggest question is when it works and when it doesn’t. Self Planning like Packaged tours has its pros and cons and certain criteria that make it happen. Before you go for a self-planned trip in Andaman you need to know how these criteria will outplay in the Andaman geographical and local situations.

Risk Factor & Credible Source

Packaged tours in Andamans are favoured by many because of their affordability, availability and experience. It offers a more trusted experienced source who takes care of everything without giving you much of a hassle. Self planned trips can give you the same level of credibility if you know the sources to trust on. So, you need to research well and gather first hand information from various sources and verify them before taking the plunge.

It can be some trusted websites giving you ample contacts and exposure to local authorities and businesses or it can be someone you know who has been there or lives there.

Comfort and Company

A packaged tour of Andaman works well if you are traveling with a large group of people and you have got people of various age groups with you. For a self planned trip a small group of like minded people is ideal as it ensures similar tastes and interests. Also it depends on the places you are planning to visit and the company you want.

Package tours provide certain liberties like having activities for every age group – from the young guns to the old ones. Self planned trips are catered to a specific need and don’t work if you have diverse people.

The biggest advantage of a self planned trip is how you do it and when you do it. It’s completely as per your whim, you aren’t rushed to do anything like in a packaged tour. Your schedule isn’t fixed, you simply can do whatever and whenever you want.

You can make last minute changes and overstay in places you like. You can wake up when you want and travel according to your comfort. Self planning makes it really look like a holiday rather than making it a busy vacation

Flexibility

Self Planning comes with a flexibility that packaged tours can never have. No matter how much customized packaged tours you opt for you can’t go beyond certain limits with it. You simply can’t overstay in a place and cancel the other.  You can’t include as many interesting places or activities you want. The most crucial one packaged tours don’t give you the memory of the journey.

You simply can’t add stoppage points and enjoy the passing time, you are always in a hurry to reach the place.  So much of the journey is lost on a packaged tour as opposed to a self planned trip.

Nature of the Person

A self planned trip is destined to bring out the nature of the person. It’s specifically curtailed to the idea of who you are and what you are. For a packaged tour you are just a person. It will at best add to your preferences like beaches over mountains, or trekking over scuba diving etc. But our personality lies much more and much in between the popular choices.

Self planning trips let you explore that. A nature lover you would like to see the beaches, the mountains and the waterfalls of Andamans and hence you will plan accordingly to witness all that instead of just going on a beach tour or mountain relaxation vacation.

Why Andaman is Good for A Self Planned Trip?

Andaman may seem to be a daunting self planned trip experience for many when you see it from the mainland due to lack of ground reporting. It’s still caught in a time wrap of an expensive remote exotic island tour kind of thing. However, it isn’t, which you would realise as soon as you land there. In fact, Andaman is more safe and friendly than most standard tourist places. It’s the sea and weather conditions which makes it unpredictable.

People are friendly and helpful here and most things are quite easily available. You might not get the internet easily everywhere but you can get all the information if you enquire. People will happily assist you and most of them speak Indian languages like Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and Telugu. So conversing and getting to places isn’t that difficult. There are only a certain number of islands to visit and things to do, so with a basic knowledge of things you can easily manoeuvre on your own.

How To Plan a Self Planned Trip for Andaman?

An Andaman self planned trip can be organized by making few arrangements beforehand and improvising others as you go about. You need to first sort out your priorities and get important information like emergency numbers,  ferry schedules , permits in place. Certain places need permits and certain places don’t have spot booking easily available especially during peak season. So, if you are going for  the pristine reefs of Jolly Buoy or Redskin make sure you book for it earlier. Also, some places are open in certain periods of the year so align your holiday according to that.

Get in touch with trusted companies and websites who have their base in Andaman and know the local people and the network. They can provide you with valuable guidance and connect you to local businesses based on your need. Right from what to pack, when to book your tickets to local experiences of places you visit to suggestions of customizing your specific stay or skipping and adding places – all can be done when you connect with the local people directly.

A quick chat with your taxi driver can lead to experiencing an ethereal sunset in a unique island inhabited by parrots, the Parrot Island. Or maybe you will stumble upon a less visited reserve forest beach like Kalapathar in Andaman. A quick talk with the locals will offer you new places to eat street food rather than just your posh hotels. It’s as easy going and happening as you see in the movies.

So, that’s how you plan a self planned trip to Andaman and get the most enthralling island experience which you have been looking for. It’s time you paid attention to yourself and experience the places you visit rather than just visiting the places of experience.

Must do things in your andaman holidays.

Birdwatching

Birdwatching in Andaman shall not be missed because there is the vast range of various birds that can be found across the whole island. The wetlands in Port Blair is home to several species of birds and photographers are in for a festive mood when they visit the “Island of Birds.”

Glass Bottom Boat Ride

Realize the genuine beauty of the underwater without having trouble to wet yourself. With a window panel between the boat and the sea, you can witness mesmerizing reefs and much more. Think, observing the entire kingdom sitting in the luxury of your ship with a glass of whisky in hand!

Fantasy of Seaplane

You are not in the water nor too far from it. With the help of seaplanes, feel how an amphibian feels like to view both the water and the air.

Home of Water Sports

There is another thing which you got to try when you’re in the town, and it is none other than the water sports (adventure sports to be precise). There are heaps of water activities to do like Snorkeling , Scuba diving , Surfing and many more; fun is a never-ending option on this beautiful island. Man oh! Man, let me tell you this it’s a crime and shame if you didn’t try these things up the hand.

There are a lot of places to trek in Andaman . Trekking in these parts sure will test your strength, stamina, durability and patience. Don’t go on blaming us, if you are not able to complete your trekking! With big mountains like Mount Harriet , Chidia Tapu , Baratang and many more, never run out of options for your trekking adventure.

Parasailing

Parasailing is an entertaining activity that is done with your loved ones. Fly like a bird, if you have a desire to fly and catching the entire view from the birds-eye point.

Kayaking and Canoeing

Into the lush green forests, you would find water bodies, swift enough to make a little crusade with kayaking and canoeing. Have tremendous fun with your friends while visiting new places is a pointer when it comes to relieving your stress, from way back home.

Popular Tourist Places which we cover in our Andaman Tour Packages

The historical Jail

The Cellular Jail (also known as Kala Pani) was a colonial prison made by the British, which was an aftermath of the Sepoy Mutiny. Many years after the independence, it was open to the public. Here you would find massive structures which were ideally built for the inmates back then

Havelock Island

One of the most important places to visit is the Havelock Island, which is a natural beauty when it comes to the beaches and its magnificent coral reefs. It is connected close to the Port Blair, and one can enjoy the underwater marine life here. The most famous Elephant Beach is positioned on the Havelock Island.

Mud volcano

Many mud volcanoes are distributed between the North and the South Andaman. One can take a moment to notice at the time of the eruption, just to view how mud erupts from the earth.

India’s Only Live Volcano

In a small island across the Andaman Sea, you would find the only confirmed active volcano in South Asia, at Barren Islands. Just seeing it from far, you would understand how Mother Nature works profoundly.

Viewing the bioluminescent beach

It would seem like tiny lighted stars right below your feet in the Havelock Island. On no moon nights, an ecstatic array of lights can be seen near the shore side, and this adds more beauty to the beach.

Ross Island, South Andaman

One can view any animals and birds like deer and peacocks. Ancient ruins of buildings can be found here, indicating how our architecture was in the olden days. The beaches are the one to keep a tab, filled with coconut and palm trees, a real paradise indeed.

India’s Southernmost Point

The other most remarkable view not to miss here is the Indira point. It is the southernmost point in India, where the end leads to nowhere at least close to fifty nautical miles.

For baratang ask your holiday home to arrange cab...we took Ertiga as we were 6 people.. car costed 5000 followed by boat ride to limestone cave @ 700 per head and Mud volcano by local car @ 100 per head...

U get prepaid taxi from airport to reach your accomodation - both ac and non ac cab available - choose at per your budget..no need to prebook

In port blair every taxi driver will offer their number right from airport and ready to take u for local sightseeing...take the quotations..hotel guys also help..

Mostly people are v honest.. They will tell u more or less same quotations - u can choose easily

Hope it will help u..

Hello Ghosh.. Certainly your posts will help. Thank you for your warm and positive response

Popular andaman tour packages, andaman tour packages faqs.

Q. What is the best time to visit Andaman? A. Prior to settling for one of the exclusive Andaman packages you need to know which is the most favourable season to visit the islands. Andaman has three significant seasons - summer, monsoon and winter, with the surrounding Bay of Bengal lending it a tropical climate round the year. Avoid visiting between July and September, the monsoon months, as tropical storms are very common at this time of the year, leading to long spells of torrential rains and high tides. You could plan a winter visit to the islands, between October and March, when the temperature lowers and so does humidity, lingering between 20 and 30 degree Celsius. You can spend ample time on the beaches, go island hopping and sightseeing and museum- visiting in Port Blair. You can even plan a summer visit, between April and June, as the evenings and mornings are very pleasant with cool breeze wafting in from the sea, though the late-mornings and afternoons remain unbearable with temperature peaking to 37 degree Celsius. Q. Which is the most famous beach in Andaman? A. The Radhanagar Beach in Havelock Island is undoubtedly the most stunning beach in the island and should be a part of your itinerary no matter whatever Andaman tour packages you go for. Among the most popularly visited beach in Havelock Island, the Radhanagar Beach is around 11 kilometre southwest of the Havelock jetty with plenty of boats plying to it through the day. The beach is a snowy-white stretch of sand fringing the azure waters. The sky appears a remarkable blue from here and sunsets are the most breathtaking at this beach. Plan an early morning visit when the crowds are leaner. Q. What are the best sites to go snorkelling in Andaman? A. If you are going through Andaman holiday packages with the sole intent of finding some phenomenal snorkelling sites, you wouldn’t be disappointed. Begin at Elephant Beach on Havelock Island, the white sands, the crystalline waters rich with reefs and marine life, make it a haven for those looking to explore the mysteries of the underwater life in the Andaman. The waters of Red Skin Island, a part of the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park in Port Blair is rich in coral reefs. Or head to North Bay Island teeming with marine adventure seekers. The waters support a spectacular ecosystem of lobsters, clams and an assortment of exotic fish. South Button, Neil Island, Kalipur and Henry Lawrence Island are your other alternatives. Q. Are there direct flights from New Delhi to the Andaman? A. There are no direct flights from Delhi to Port Blair . All flights either have a stopover in Chennai or Kolkata and can take anywhere between 5.5 to 10 hours to get you into Port Blair’s Veer Savarkar International Airport. IndiGo and SpiceJet popularly run flights on this route. Q. Can the Andaman be visited in the summer months? A. Yes, it can be. The presence of the Bay of Bengal moderates the temperature and keeps it pleasant for exploration. The day temperature can get as high as 37 degree Celsius between April and June, so it is better to avoid the peak afternoon for your sightseeing. The average summer temperature is around 24 degree Celsius and ideal to go around Port Blair, Havelock, Neil Islands and Diglipur. Q. Are there cruises to the Andaman? A. There are government-operated ships to the Andaman from Vizag, Chennai and Kolkata, but these are nothing like the fancy cruise liners you would imagine. The booking of these need to be made from the shipping service office of the respective city. Though details on timings are posted on the official Andaman ship schedule website about 15 days ahead of the departure day of the ship. There are no more than one to two ships a week. Q. How to commute from Port Blair to the other islands? A. There are private ferries that connect Port Blair with Havelock and Neil Islands. The ferries take about an hour to get to Havelock and 90 minutes for Neil. These ferries have great frequency and are easy accessible from the Port Blair jetties. There is a helicopter service too from Port Blair to Havelock, Neil, Diglipur and Hutbay in Little Andaman. Only parts of North Andaman such as Rangat, Diglipur, Baratang and Mayabunadar are connected to Port Blair thorough the Andaman Trunk Road (ATR). Q. How long do I need in Port Blair before proceeding to other islands? A. Two days suffices for a stay in the capital city, Port Blair, also the port of entry into the Andamans. After getting some rest on the day of arrival, you can explore the local market, visit the Cellular Jail, the Marine Park, the anthropology museum among other museums before capping it off with a sunset at Corbyn Cove Beach. On the second day, you can do a glass bottom boat ride, go on a bird watching tour or a historical tour of the city, soak up a little before venturing into Havelock and further. Q. What sort of nightlife does Port Blair have? A. There are pockets in the capital that offer a lively setting for a good drink and dinner. Particularly popular with tourists and locals as well are Nico Bar and Seashells Hotel that have live music and poisons of your choice. Don’t expect a discotheque or a night club, but there are ample cosy spaces to spend a nice evening, have a few beers, or a cocktail. The ANDIICO floating restaurant is another spot for a romantic dinner. Sea Sip at Peerless Inn Portico, Pink Fly and Love Garden in Shompen and Waves by the Corbyn Cove Beach are among other popular places to let your hair down. Q. Which is an off season in the Andaman? A. The monsoon months between July and September are the low months in terms of tourism in Andaman. Torrential rains, high tides and frequent storms make it difficult to enjoy the beach or explore the islands. Many places become inaccessible at this time of the year. The wilderness also comes into its own, and there could be more than one spotting of dangerous bugs and insects. The ferry service is affected - cancelled too more often, the seas are swollen and unfit for a swim far less diving and snorkelling. All activity on the island virtually comes to a halt in the monsoon. You must avoid planning a visit in this season. Q. Is Long Island a must-visit place? A. Part of Middle Andaman, Long Island is a unique place with stunning stretches of sand and non-motorable roads. For the touristy type, this may not be an ideal place because of the lack of commercialisation and its general slow pace. The only way to explore the island is by walking, besides there is no internet or mobile connectivity. There is a Lalaji Bay Beach, a marble-white sand bar skirting a deep blue sea, the Merk Bay Beach and the Guitar Island that take about a whole day and can be done by hiring a private charter. For bird watchers, backpackers, photographers, and of course certified divers, this place is paradise. Q. How many Ross Islands are there in the Andaman? A. There are two of them by the same name. One is an island pair called Ross and Smith Islands in North Andaman and is a 20-minute boat ride from Diglipur’s Aerial Bay Jetty. The island is unspoilt and perfect for snorkelling or simply swimming in the sea. The second Ross Island is an erstwhile British administrative headquarters, a 20-minute boat ride from the Aberdeen Jetty in Port Blair. This Ross Island has recently been rechristened Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep. You will still find remains from its colonial era, but other than that it is nice and scenic with a small museum. Q. Do Indian citizens need passport to visit the Andaman? A. Indian citizens need not carry a passport for a holiday in the Andaman which includes Port Blair, Havelock, Neil, Little Andaman, Diglipur or Baratang. But you do need a special permit if visiting places like Cinque Island, Jolly Bouy Island and Redskin Island.
