Waterford Beach Park

After a night in the Big Apple, rejoin the I-95 and head north into Connecticut. Your route will take you through cities like Stamford and New Haven, if you fancy a museum outing or lunch in the city.

But we also recommend checking out Waterford Beach Park a little further east along the highway. Waterford Beach is one of the state’s few natural, unmodified beaches. Sit back and take in the views of Long Island across the waters or walk about the nearby Harkness Memorial State Park for a day outdoors.

Schedule a stop in Providence, Rhode Island’s capital – the I-95 runs straight through Downtown, so it’s hard to miss. The city’s flourishing arts community make it a top location for art lovers.

Our favorite public piece is artist Boris Bally’s “Gun Totem” sculpture on South Main Street, opposite the courthouse. Venture down to see the intriguing concrete pillar standing 12 feet high and containing more than 1,000 disabled guns – a unique sight to say the least.

Minute Man National Historical Park

All around the Minute Man National park you can feel a great sense of history. From the battles that signaled the beginning of the American Revolution to the traditional pre-revolution buildings, a guided tour is highly recommended here. The nearby Minute Man Visitor Centre is also great if you’re short on time and need an overview.

USS Albacore Museum

You’ve come this far on your I-95 road trip, why not explore a submarine? But don’t worry – this submarine’s on dry land. The USS Albacore was designed as a testing submarine. The full vessel is open for viewing, so watch your head as you peer through the periscope and marvel at the miles of wires and pipes running along its walls.

Palace Playland

Sporting the catchy title of “New England’s only beachfront amusement park”, Palace Playland makes the most of Maine’s beautiful coastline. Great I-95 Road Trip Stops from Orlando to Boston

An I-95 roadtrip along the east coast is one of the most popular trips in the country. Highlights include the Atlantic coast of Florida, Georgia’s Barrier Islands, Savannah and Washington, DC, among other destinations. The distance from Orlando to Boston is 1,285 miles and google estimates 20 hours and 40 minutes of driving. Plan for it to take longer because google often underestimates the time, and you’re likely to encounter multiple traffic delays along the busy thoroughfare.

Here are great road trip stops from Orlando to Boston along I-95, two cities we previously lived in. There’s a wide variety to choose from between coastal getaways to city breaks!

Orlando is a short drive off I-95, along I-4. It’s the world’s most visited city, drawing around 75 million visitors in 2019. That’s a staggering number, equal to the population of the United Kingdom. And while those numbers dropped significantly in 2020, tourism is rebounding with a vengeance. Disney World , Universal Studios and Sea World are offering great specials, especially for Florida residents, to bring visitors back.

Asides from the theme parks, Orlando has a lot to offer visitors. Punctuated by Lake Eola, the city is dotted with picturesque lakes to enjoy outdoor recreation, walks and picnics. Nearby New Smyrna Beach and Cocoa Beach are about an hour drive. Winter Park is one of the most charming Orlando area neighborhoods to visit. Cobblestone lined Park Avenue is dotted with charming restaurants, boutique shops, art galleries, cafes and museums. Great Orlando Hotels

There are fantastic hotels and resorts to stay all over Orlando. For couples that want a romantic getaway, stay in historic Winter Park at The Alfond Inn . If you want to be close to downtown Orlando’s bars and nightclubs and the Amway Center, stay at the Grand Bohemian . The Victorian themed Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is a stone’s throw from Magic Kingdom and among the best of the areas fantastic resorts. The Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress is a fantastic golf resort, featuring 45 holes designed by Jack Nicklaus and a world class swimming pool.

St. Augustine, Florida

St. Augustine is located on the northeast of Florida, around a 1 hour and 45 minute drive from Orlando along 1-95. founded in 1565, lays claim to being the oldest town in the U.S. It’s renowned for its Spanish colonial architecture as well as Atlantic Ocean beaches like sandy St. Augustine Beach and tranquil Crescent Beach. Anastasia State Park is a protected wildlife sanctuary where visitors can enjoy outdoor recreation like camping, boat rentals and hiking.

Castillo de San Marcos is famous for being the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. The large stone fortress was originally built by the Spanish during the 1600s. Its been controlled by the Spanish, British and Americans at different times over the centuries.

Castillo de San Marcos was retired as a fort in the early 1900s. The National Park Service took over maintaining it in 1933. The historic fort offers sweeping views of the St. Augustine Inlet.

Stay at a Bed and Breakfast in St. Augustine

St. Augustine has charming bed and breakfasts great for couples’ getaways. Carriage Way Inn Bed & Breakfast  is a great choice for a couples stay. The adults-only, Victorian-style B&B serves a hot chef’s choice breakfast each morning and offers coffee, tea, and wine throughout the day. Guests can enjoy views of historic Saint Augustine from the verandas, and grab fresh-baked sweets from the lobby each afternoon. Their concierge can assist guests with information about local dining and attractions.

Jekyll Island is located off the coast of Georgia, in Glynn County. It’s one of the Golden Isles of the Georgia barrier islands. The State of Georgia owns the island. And it’s managed by a self-sustaining, self-governing body. There are miles of picturesque wide-open beaches, marshes, and live oaks draped in Spanish moss to explore.

Located on the north end of  Jekyll Island , Driftwood Beach marvels visitors with its beautiful driftwood. The famous trees resemble a scene from another world. It consistently ranks as one of America’s Ten Most Romantic Beaches . 

The  Jekyll Island Club Resort is a wonderful place to stay during a getaway. It offers Victorian charm with modern conveniences in the center of the Historic District. Guests can enjoy on site-restaurants, bars, bicycle rentals, a swimming pool, history tours, croquet, beach services and more. Enjoy a meal in their beautiful Grand Dining Room, in the resort’s Victorian clubhouse. The Historic District bike trail, part of a 24.8 miles system of bike trails across Jekyll Island, is adjacent to the property.

You can spend a lot of time exploring the barrier islands of Georgia. Nearby St. Simons Island as well as Tybee Island, near Savannah, also make excellent vacation spots. The islands are a relaxing reprieve during an I-95 road trip.

Savannah, Georgia: A Popular I-95 Road Trip Stop

Savannah, a coastal Georgia city, is famous for its historic district filled with cobblestoned squares and parks like Forsyth Park. Manicured parks lined with Spanish moss covered oak trees, horse-drawn carriages and antebellum architecture offer stories of the city’s past and present. The Gothic-Revival Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist is another highlight of the picturesque historic district. Stroll along the Savannah River, which separates Georgia and South Carolina.

Children and sweet toothed adults like us love swinging into the chocolate shops for handmade treats. Savannah’s Candy Kitchen sells delicious handmade southern candy, cakes and pies, including pralines, fudge, turtles, gift baskets, and more. Fresh made  praline s and chocolate covered pecan halves are ubiquitous around the southern United States.

Savannah is one of the best and most convenient stops during an I-95 road trip. It is a charming southern town, with cobblestone streets and a relaxed vibe. Enjoy some of the 22 charming public squares located within in Savannah. Chippewa Square is where Forrest Gump sits on the bench waiting for bus number 9 for most of the movie. There is no bench in the spot, but you can sit in the square itself and enjoy a coffee from a nearby cafe like  Gallery Espresso.

Grab a table on the terrace of a charming restaurant in the historic district like The Floridian . It offers internationally influenced southern dishes like shrimp banh mi po boys. Their Bay of Pigs is a Floridian style take on the popular Cuban sandwich that’s so ubiquitous in Florida. It includes braised CartWheel Ranch pulled pork, spicy remoulade mustard, house-pickled veggies and baby swiss cheese – griddled and pressed on Ciabatta bread.

Great Stay in Savannah

The Drayton makes for a great couples stay in historic Savannah. Comfortable rooms await guests, along with an onsite restaurant, bar and room service. The hotel is close to popular attractions like City Market, River Street Train Museum and Owens-Thomas Museum.

The state capital of Virginia was also the capital of the Confederacy during the US Civil War. Its innovative culinary scene, unique American history and architecture dating to the 1700’s make it a worthwhile stop right along I-95. From the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to the Virginia State Capitol Building and beyond, there is a lot to experience. Thomas Jefferson designed The Virginia State Capitol. Completed in 1788, it features the only statue of George Washington sculpted during his lifetime. Washington posed for the statue, which also dates to 1788. The Virginia State Capitol also features the nation’s oldest Greek rival columns.

Opened since 1936, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is one of the largest comprehensive art museums in the United States. You can see a range of art from ancient Egypt to contemporary pieces. The  VMFA  is home to one of the largest Faberge egg collections in the world too. Admission to the permanent collection is donation based.

The Jefferson Hotel’s  Lemaire Restaurant  is one of the premier fine dining choices in the region. It’s an elegant experience, with so much attention to detail. We were delighted to receive special menus wishing us a happy 14 year wedding anniversary when we dined there.

Historic Luxury Stay in Richmond

Founded in 1895, the historic and opulent Jefferson Hotel is AAA’s only 5 diamond rated hotel in central Virginia. So it’s ideally suited for a luxury couples stay. Enjoy high tea in their Palm Court, punctuated by a marble statue of Thomas Jefferson. It also features a beautiful skylight and windows, much of which is Tiffany glass dating back to 1907. On Sundays, the Jefferson hosts a lavish champagne brunch in their beautiful mezzanine, featuring a jazz band.

The hotel’s famous Grand Staircase, with 36 marble steps, resembles the one in the classic film Gone With the Wind . Intricately adorned Corinthian style columns support a 70-foot ceiling, with multi-colored gold leaf designs. An impressive skylight and fine paintings featuring presidents and other notable figures give it a feel of stepping into the Great Gatsby. Washington, DC, features predominantly Greek revival architecture and resembles what ancient Athens looked like. Explore the city deeper and find a mix of federalist, brutalist and a variety of other architectural styles. The world’s largest collection of free museums, The Smithsonian , includes 21 museums, galleries and the National Zoological Park. 

Many of the most important US artifacts are located in free museums and galleries along the National Mall, between the US Capitol Building and the Washington Monument. You can see an original copy of the US Constitution at the  National Archives . The National Museum of American History showcases the original  star spangled banner . The  National Air and Space Museum  features an impressive collection of aircraft and space memorabilia, including the lunar module.

The Smithsonian museums can be especially crowded on weekends. So go early or during the week, if you want to avoid potentially long lines.

The  US National Arboretum  features 22 Corinthian columns that were formerly part of the US Capitol Building’s East Portico from 1828-1958. Abraham Lincoln, among other US presidents before him, was inaugurated president in front of these columns. A great time to visit the US National Arboretum is in spring for the Azalea Blossom. Enjoying a picnic during good weather is truly one of the  romantic things to do in Washington, DC . Many who have visited Washington, DC multiple times aren’t even aware of the National Arboretum.

If you’ve visited Washington, DC multiple times and are looking for something new to experience, there are a lot of great day trips from Washington, DC . the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia is home to tasty and picturesque wineries. Depending on traffic, it’s about an hour to 1.5 hours drive to wine country. Sourced Adventures runs a fun  winery tour from DC . If you rent a car and drive there (obviously be careful drinking and driving), Blue Valley Vineyards is especially picturesque.

Great Stay in Central Washington, DC

Sofitel Lafayette Square  is a great luxury stay near the White House, often with much cheaper weekend rates. Located 1,300 feet from the White House in Washington, D.C., this historic hotel features an on-site restaurant and lounge. Offering French comfort food, Opaline Bar and Brasserie is located on site.

The Big Apple is one of the most exciting and diverse cities in the world. Take in a Broadway show, stroll Central Park, enjoy great restaurants and hopping nightlife or go on a shopping spree. Travelers from around the world enjoy New York City’s bustling energy amid soaring skyscrapers centuries of unique architecture and history.

New York City has some excellent rooftop bars to lap up views of the city over a drink. One I highly recommend is  230 Fifth Rooftop Bar . It offers wonderful views of the Big Apple’s skyline including the Empire State Building. Enjoy a cocktail and sushi while soaking up the ambiance.

Enjoy unique highlights like the The High Line , a 1.45 mile long elevated park built atop a former railway line on the lower west side of Manhattan. The train line originally opened in 1933. It was abandoned in the early 80s. It was set for demolition until the community rallied to save the space and turn it into a public park.

New York City is a great place to enjoy cocktails. The  Manhattan was first created around 1860. There’s also a lot of interesting prohibition era history and some cool former speakeasy pubs you can visit, like the William Barnacle Tavern. Enjoy mouth watering delis and bakeries in Little Italy. New York Hotels

The capital of Massachusetts is packed with history and fun. Making it ideal for a great city getaway. Founded by Puritan settlers on the Shawmut Peninsula in 1630 by Puritan settlers from the English town of the same name, Boston is one of the oldest municipalities in the United States. Its rich history attracts throngs of tourists from around the world.

Faneuil Hall typically draws around 20 million visitors per year. Boston’s many United States’ firsts include the nation’s first public park (Boston Common in 1634), first public or state school (Boston Latin School in 1635) and first subway system (Tremont Street subway in 1897).

Asides from historic sites along the Freedom Trail, whale watching trips are also popular. May through October is the best time for whale watching in New England. Boat tours along the Atlantic Ocean offer opportunities to view Humpback, finback and minke whales.

Boston is an ideal starting point and base to explore New England during an I-95 road trip. When we lived in Boston, we would often take day trips to explore Martha’s Vineyard , Cape Cod, Cape Ann, Salem and Rockport . The opulent mansions and gardens in Newport , Rhode Island are another popular day trip. Portsmouth, New Hampshire is just a 90 minute drive from Boston and it’s the 3rd oldest town in the United States.

10 Stops You Can’t Miss on Your I-95 Road Trip

If you want to drive along America’s East Coast, chances are you’ll motor on I-95 for a good portion of it. Beginning in Maine and ending in Florida, the highway passes through more states than any other in the U.S. -- 15 in all. Interstate 95 is also the country’s longest North-South road, but not all of that thoroughfare is exactly scenic. Many miles have wonderful coastline views and some exits are just a few traffic lights away from great American history. However, there are also some stretches that seem like one rest stop after another. Here’s a shortlist to remind you when to pump the brakes during your I-95 road trip, plus some nearby hotels where you can rest your head.

1. Castillo de San Marcos

Some consider St. Augustine the oldest city in the United States, while others say it’s the oldest continuously occupied area developed by European settlers. Either way, this northeast Florida destination is filled with lavish Spanish-style mansions and artifacts of a complicated colonial history. Spanish conquistador Pedro Menéndez de Avilés founded the coastal city in 1565, and pirates later invaded it. In the 1700s, British loyalists made it a destination and Napoleon’s armies turned it into a target in the early 1800s. The masonry walls of the Castillo de San Marcos witnessed most of those skirmishes and is still standing tall, making it an excellent place to study classic army architecture or just play a game of pretend.

2. Savannah Historic District and Bonaventure Cemetery

In British colonial times, Savannah was the capital of the Province of Georgia, and remained under the king’s rule until 1782. Today, travelers come to the port city to inhale the genteel breeze that lingers over the well-worn cobblestone streets and ripples through intricately detailed Victorian homes. In addition to numerous historic buildings, the town is home to Old Fort Jackson (which has daily cannon firings) and the mysteriously creepy Bonaventure Cemetery (made famous in the book “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”). Foodies also visit Savannah for the traditional and innovative takes on Southern cooking, which can be found in restaurants like Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room, Cotton & Rye, and Nairobi’s Grits & Gravy.

3. Congaree National Park

Once a logging forest, Congaree National Park, which contains the largest remaining area of old growth bottomland hardwood forest, received its official federal designation in 2003. The 26,000 acres of South Carolina parkland has one of the biggest concentrations of champion trees, including a 167-foot point loblolly pine and a 157-foot sweet gum tree. The park also offers plenty of opportunities for campers, hikers, and kayakers to get active. Bird watchers can hunt the skies for red-tailed hawks, yellow-bellied sapsuckers, warblers, or one of the many species that nest in the area. If you simply want to take a leisurely stroll, the Boardwalk Loop tracks through a swampy ecosystem filled with cypress trees that are over 500 years old.

4. Museum of the Cape Fear and Airborne and Special Operations Museum

Today, Fayetteville, North Carolina, is best known as the home of Fort Bragg, but it also has plenty of military history dating back to the Civil War. When Union general William Sherman marched his troops through town, they notably destroyed the arsenal and offices of the local newspaper, “The Fayetteville Observer.” One of the last great calvary battles of the war occurred at Monroe’s Crossroads. Details about these events can be found at the Museum of the Cape Fear. Another local repository, the Airborne and Special Operations Museum tells the history of the 82nd Airborne Division, which has its roots in nearby Fort Bragg.

5. Downtown Fredericksburg

The spirit of the 18th century is still very much alive on the streets of Fredericksburg, Virginia. The downtown historic area has several sites that date back to the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. The Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop reverently recreates an early American pharmacy. The Rising Sun Tavern is a watering hole in what was once a house built for George Washington’s younger brother, Charles. George Washington’s family moved to nearby Ferry Farm when the future president was six years old. Plus, there are contemporary restaurants like Fahrenheit 132, which serves up innovative versions of the area’s traditional cuisine.

6. Philadelphia’s “Rocky” Steps and Mütter Museum

While the nation’s birthplace has plenty to offer American history buffs, there’s a lot of fun and culture beyond the typical attractions. If you’ve already stood in line to see the Liberty Bell and the seats in Independence Hall, dash up the 72 steps located before the entrance of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (free of charge). These steps were made famous in the “Rocky” films. Go inside to check out world-renowned works by Duchamp and Cézanne. Then, head over to Mütter Museum, which has a collection of medical oddities, including the conjoined livers of siamese twins Eng and Chang.

7. Battleship New Jersey

Across the river from Philadelphia is one of the largest and most decorated battleships ever built. Docked in Camden, the Battleship New Jersey offers tours of the main deck, bridge, and cabins. Everyone can take a seat in the captain’s chair and also learn how the turrets were loaded and fired. Along the way, you’ll learn about the Battleship New Jersey’s role in World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam. Hardcore enthusiasts can even arrange to stay the night in one of the bunks.

9. The Breakers

There are houses, there are mansions, and then there’s The Breakers, one of the grandest “cottages” ever built. Commissioned by Cornelius Vanderbilt II, the Newport, Rhode Island, summer home was inspired by the palaces of 16th-century Italy. It has 70 rooms, large chandeliers, and an abundance of gilt. Fun fact: Journalist Anderson Cooper is a descendent of the Vanderbilt family and “Nothing Left Unsaid” — a documentary about his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt — had a screening at The Breakers.

The fourth edition of Drive I-95 by Stan Posner and Sandra Phillips-Posner is now available, and like good wine, this road guide series keeps getting better and better. For the first time, the guide extends its extraordinary coverage all the way to Miami, Florida. In past editions, the guide stopped at about mile marker 14 in the northern section of Florida. Since the 4th edition is about eight pages shorter than the 3rd and covers much more territory, I was very curious how they authors had managed to achieve such a feat. The answer is: pretty cleverly! They restructured the map portions so that a reader can use the book in either direction, thus eliminating the need for a separate set of pages for northbound maps. At the same time, they added 22 pages of new information about exits and attractions found at each off-ramp. Also new are 23 more pages of "stories of the road" which provide insider tips about places to eat and explore on the 1500-mile journey along Interstate 95 between Boston, Massachusetts and Miami, Florida.

I-95, which runs from Houlton, Maine, to Miami, Florida, is one of the most heavily traveled routes in the United States. At 1,920 miles, it's the longest north-south transcontinental route in the U.S. It has the shortest state segment (.11 mile through Washington, D.C.), it passes through more states (16) than any other interstate highway, it was the most expensive to build, and it passes through six of the top twenty U.S. metropolitan areas. Every year, the road trip enthusiasts, on the Great American RoadTrip Forum , respond to hundreds of queries from would-be travelers seeking alternative scenic routes to I-95. But with this book in hand, travel along Interstate 95 is easily transformed from a grueling car trip to an adventure in roadside Americana along one of the great highways in the United States.

The constant evolution of modern highways and the businesses they attract means that a slew of roadside businesses have opened, closed or moved since last year. The authors continue their admirable practice of triple-checking every one of the 553 off-ramps to ensure that the description and location of the hundreds of restaurants, gas stations, rest areas and car washes are accurate. This year, the resource guide at the end of the book has been redesigned, making it incredibly easy to locate campgrounds, golf courses, auto mechanic repair centers, independent motels, and B&Bs that are located in close proximity to off ramps along the highway. Travelers seeking pet-friendly accommodations will see a small dog symbol to the right of the name of animal-accommodating motels. I also noticed that farm stands selling fresh produce are now shown on the map pages.

The map portion of the book is designed so that the locations of services, exit roads, attractions, and sign posts are positioned so they appear to be in the "correct" orientation -- in other words, how they would appear if the reader were to look up from the book page and look at the highway. To make things even easier, they have added the phrase "Drive Up/Down The Page" at the top and bottom of each page to help those of us who may be "map challenged." Another element that aids in relating the map pages to the real world is the addition of water tower symbols and other easily seen visual points of reference. One ingenious feature of the maps is that speed limits are indicated in different shades of gray: the darker the shade, the higher the limit on that section of the roadway. A liberal use of landmark icons aid in navigating unfamiliar roads, and the exit icons provide information about all the other highway connections available at that exit ramp. Each of the map pages covers either a fifteen- or thirty-mile section along the roadway. The fifteen-mile pages are used for places where the density of the information requires more room on the page. The book also identifies the known hiding spots of radar-equipped state police cruisers along the entire route.

The "white detail pages" in the center of the book provide information about quirky museums, appealing B&Bs, historical sites, and fun places to eat. These write-ups are well done and make interesting reading. Plenty of trivia and historical anecdotes are included. The big news this year is that just about all of the 128 photos are in color, and the pages have been redesigned to make them even easier to read when going down the road. By my count there are a whopping 162 new articles about places to explore and visit never before covered in this guide. It is really quite astonishing how many new attractions, lodging options and restaurants the authors discover each year. In addition, at the top of each page the authors have included useful Web links for each of the states.

A few intriguing examples of this year's additions include a discussion about the tree that "ate Roger Williams" at his burial spot on a farm in Rhode Island, and the Garbage Museum located near exit 30 in Connecticut, where visitors can see a transfer station in full operation. A fabulous eatery you'd probably never notice without this book is the Bay Gourmet near exit 100 in Maryland, where topnotch food is served behind a decidedly nondescript facade. In Florida, the Alligator Farm Zoological Park in St. Augustine is a standout with its twenty-three species of alligators and crocodiles.

Still in business and in the book are appealing roadside attractions like the spot to find yummy-sounding shrimp gorgonzola crab cakes in Connecticut. You'll find information about how to sleep overnight in sailor's bunks aboard the Battleship New Jersey, and the Roundhouse Railroad Museum near Macon, Georgia, lets you see a still-working turntable that was once used to repair train engines. Many more local landmarks, museums, eateries, and wonders are profiled, many of which you might miss without this book. It's also nice to know about the super-clean bathrooms on the New Jersey Turnpike, the stories behind the terms "hush puppies" and "New England," and that the most-requested recipe at the Lone Star Barbeque & Mercantile in Santee, South Carolina, is Tomato Pie.

If you are one of the millions of drivers who dread driving along I-95 each year, reading this book could be a life-altering experience. It can turn you into a highway expert with a seemingly uncanny ability to find fascinating but little-known attractions and fabulous road food known only to locals. With Drive-I-95, a seasonal chore might well become one of the best road trip experiences you've ever had.

The I-95 highway route from New England and NYC all the way down to Miami might seem long and daunting, but it’s a surprisingly easy route with some great places to stop along the way. Below are some highlights from the popular East Coast road trip thousands make each year.

My East Coast road trip started in Connecticut. The goal: get my aunt’s car all the way down to Fort Lauderdale so she’d have it for her winter home. With my flexible work schedule and passion for road trips, saying yes to the trip just came naturally.

I’ve done pieces of this road trip before, including driving through Florida a handful of times, as well as a handful of New England road trips. But the full trip I’d never done before. Google Maps made it seem pretty straightforward.

From my starting point to final destination, it was truthfully only going to take 22 hours or so of drive time. But I had the time and the passion, so my goal was to make this a true road trip.

There are so many cool destinations and things to see along the Eastern Seaboard, many of which I hadn’t been to before. Below, a few of the best places to stop along the East Coast on an I-95 road trip .

Best Places to Stop on an I-95 East Coast Road Trip

Philadelphia, pa.

They call it the “City of Brotherly Love,” and as the birthplace for so much of American democracy, there’s little dispute of Philadelphia’s place in history. That’s what makes it such a perfect pitstop on a proper American road trip .

It’s relatively easy to see Philadelphia’s top tourist attractions in a few hours. The Liberty Bell and Independence Hall are across the street from one another, with the National Constitution Center and U.S. Mint also in walking distance. If you plan it right, it’s easy to hit up those main attractions in a few hours, grab a Philly cheesesteak to eat, and be on your way!

Alexandria, VA

Part of the Washington, D.C. metro system, Alexandria is a taste of pure Americana. Its charming city center & main street have plenty of cute and quaint shopping and eating options. It’s also a great place for an overnight stay as the accommodation options are a little cheaper than staying directly in Washington, D.C., though it’s still accessible if you did want to do some sightseeing.

Richmond, VA

Just a further two hours south on I-95, Virginia’s capitol city Richmond is great for a quick city break. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts houses an impressive collection of classic and contemporary arts, while the Valentine and the Edgar Allen Poe offer unique historical exhibitions.

And thanks to a healthy population of young adults and college students, Richmond has a thriving foodie scene with plenty of craft breweries and cool hipster dining spots.

Charleston, SC

Charleston is a bit further from I-95 so isn’t a typical stopping point on this well-traveled road trip route, but I’m a sucker for adventure and have been curious about South Carolina for a while, so was happy to go out of my way to visit. I think I was also swayed to visit because I watch Stephen Colbert a lot, and he’s always talking about it. I was curious.

About an hour off of I-95, Charleston is that charming kind of Southern town. Beautifully colored houses in classic colonial styles line every street—with blossoming flowers in the windowsills, friendly neighbors, and large porches & verandas. The main tourist attraction is the Fort Sumter National Monument which can be visited on a tour accessed by ferry.

Savannah, GA

Just off I-95, Savannah is easily accessible from the highway. Home to one of the region’s largest art schools, the Savannah College of Art & Design, the city has a proclivity for creativity—not to mention its extensive history. The Historic District is home to southern Americana sights along cobblestoned & tree-lined streets.

The charming city offers a lot of history with its unique local architecture reminiscent of a “small town America” you’d see in the movies. It’s a quiet town, so don’t expect too much buzzing activity, but day or night the area in and around Forsyth Park is always bustling with the young and the old. The park also hosts a weekend flea market on Sundays.

From Savannah, it’s a long few hours to Florida. And once in Florida, there are plenty of places to stop for a short visit. The I-95 runs several miles in-land from most of the beach cities, so the stretch of driving in Florida can be a bit boring. Jacksonville, Daytona Beach, and Fort Lauderdale make for good stopping points during a Florida road trip down I-95, but the Gulf Coast, Panhandle,  and central Florida (Orlando) are all decent destinations besides Miami and the Florida Keys at the tip.

Road trips are the kind of travel you’ll either love or hate. They’re often best with a group of friends or (sometimes) with family, but it’s also pretty manageable on your own. So long as you’ve got a budget and a passion for exploration, road trips are a lot of fun.

How much does an East Coast road trip cost? I managed the above road trip with stops in each of those cities and managed to keep my budget under $700 including hotels, gas, food, and activities. That was with plenty of fast food stops along the way, but hey—that’s part of the joy of an American road trip!
