Can't enable content blockers on your iPhone or iPad? Here's the fix!

ios safari extensions grayed out

Whether you can't find the Content Blocker setting in Safari at all or you've found it and it's greyed out, here's how to troubleshoot and get you on your merry content-blocking way.

How to turn on the Content Blocker setting

If you can't find the content blocker setting, chances are you're either looking in the wrong place or you haven't yet installed a content blocker. For some reason, certain iPhones and iPads won't show the Content Blocker setting under Settings > Safari > Content Blockers until you've installed an applicable content-blocking app.

To do this, visit the App Store and pick any one of the content blockers currently on sale. (We really like Crystal and Purify

After you've installed the blocker, head back to Settings > Safari ; the Content Blockers menu should appear under the General subsection, below Block Pop-Ups .

How to fix greyed-out Content Blocker switches

If you've installed a content blocker and gone to enable it, only to find that the switch for doing so in Safari's preferences is disabled, you've likely accidentally enabled Restrictions for Safari. To check and see if you have (and disable such things), follow these steps.

  • Go to Settings > General > Restrictions and enter in your passcode.
  • Scroll down to the Allowed Content section. Do you have any restrictions set for websites other than All ? If so, you'll need to disable them in order to activate your content blockers. (Alternatively, just turn Restrictions Off .)

ios safari extensions grayed out

  • Return to Settings > Safari > Content Blockers .

You should now be able to turn on your content blocker of choice. Once you've done so, you can reenable your Restrictions (by going to Settings > General > Restrictions > Websites ); the Content Blockers screen will be greyed out once more, but any blocker you set to activate will still be active.

Still can't get your content blocker of choice to work? Ping us in the comments and we'll try to help troubleshoot.

I upgraded to Sonoma and all of my extensions in Safari disappeared. I cannot add any new extensions as well. When I open the Wipr app, it says to enable the extension in Safari but nothing is there. The left hand pane in the extensions window is completely empty.

  • Extensions are turned off by default. Browser extensions can be turned on by going to Safari > Settings > Extensions and selecting the extension in the left column. Then in the main section, look for a setting checkbox for Allow in Private Browsing and check the box.

Like I said. Poof. Gone.

iOS 15 Safari Extensions Worth Checking Out

With iOS 15, Apple introduced a new design and a range of new features , including better support for extensions. Safari in iOS 15 supports web extensions, which can be downloaded and installed through the App Store , so there are a much wider range of extension options for you to choose from.

iOs 15 Safari Feature

  • 1Password (Subscription Required) - For 1Password users, the 1Password extension allows users to input their saved 1Password information in Safari, similar to how it works on the Mac. 1Password can autofill logins, passwords, credit card information, two-factor authentication codes, and more. A 1Password subscription is required, which is priced at $2.99 per month.
  • Amplosion ($2.99) - Amplosion redirects Google's AMP pages and links to standard links in Safari, which is a good solution for those who don't like AMP pages. Amplosion, designed by Apollo creator Christian Selig, is open source and designed with transparency so users can verify what the extension is doing.
  • Apollo (Free) - Reddit app Apollo has a new Safari extension that's designed to allow the Apollo app to open any Reddit weblink rather than requiring the link to be opened in the Reddit app. If you pair Apollo with Amplosion, Safari will open any Safari Reddit link in the Apollo app automatically, which is great for those who prefer Apollo to the official Reddit app. Apollo is free, but the Pro unlock costs $4.99.
  • Achoo - ($0.99) - Another extension created by Christian Selig, Achoo is an HTML viewer and inspector. If you need to see the HTML of a webpage on your iPhone and iPad , this is a simple app worth picking up. You can inspect HTML, copy/paste it, and edit it.
  • StopTheMadness ($7.99) - StopTheMadness is a privacy protecting extension that has several functions. It stops Google from loading AMP pages, ends clickjacking in Google search results, Facebook, and Gmail, removes tracking parameters from the ends of URLs, loads unshortened versions of URLs, prevents videos from autoplaying, and more. It's expensive, but for those who want to cut out a lot of the Safari browsing annoyances, it's worth checking out.
  • Super Agent (Free) - Super Agent is an extension that automatically fills in cookie consent forms based on your preferences, getting rid of frustrating cookie pop up forms.
  • Overamped ($1.99) - Overamped is another extension that is designed to direct AMP and Yandex Turbo to the original sites, disabling AMP and Yandex Turbo in Safari.
  • Dark Reader ($4.99) - Dark Reader for Safari brings Dark Mode to every website by adding dark themes for websites that don't support ‌Dark Mode‌ natively. There are controls for adjusting brightness and contrast, swapping between Dynamic and Filter mode, toggling the dark themes off for individual websites, and more.
  • Noir ($2.99) - If you have ‌Dark Mode‌ turned on and visit a website that does not support it, Noir will automatically turn it dark so that you're not blinded by a sudden bright webpage with ‌Dark Mode‌ enabled. Noir only activates when a website does not have a ‌Dark Mode‌ option, and you can choose to turn ‌Dark Mode‌ on or off on a site by site basis.
  • Convusic ($0.99) - Convusic is a Safari extension that's designed to open any Spotify link in Apple Music . If you're an ‌Apple Music‌ subscriber and often come across Spotify links but still want to hear the songs, this extension offers a solution. When installed, you can choose which app will open music streaming links. It works both ways - Spotify users can set it to open ‌Apple Music‌ songs in Spotify, and ‌Apple Music‌ users can set it to open Spotify songs in ‌Apple Music‌.

Installing Extensions

To install an extension, you need to download the extension app from the ‌App Store‌ and then open up the Safari section of the Settings app. From there, tap on "Extensions" and select the toggle next to the extension you want to enable.

If you want to find more extensions, just tap on the "More Extensions" button to go to the "Safari Extensions" section in the ‌App Store‌.

Alternatively, extensions can also be managed right in the browser window by tapping on the "Aa" button and then choosing the "Manage Extensions" option.

Should also be pointed out that those of us who previously paid for 1Password, and are still using stand alone vaults with no subscription, can not only NOT use the new extension, but they took away the existing share sheet with no warning.

7 Ways to Fix Safari Suggestions Greyed Out on iPhone

ios safari extensions grayed out

An engineer by education, his understanding of the inner workings of all types of gadgets and devices ensures he provides top-notch guidance, tips, and recommendations to his readers. When away from the desk, you will find him traveling, playing FIFA, or hunting for a good movie.

Apple’s exclusive web browser Safari is the go-to option for many of us while using an iPhone. While it mostly does a great job, it still isn’t free from flaws . Recently, we weren’t able to retrieve search suggestions on Safari. Of course, we went to the Settings app for a check but turns out the toggle for Safari Suggestions was greyed out.

ios safari extensions grayed out

If you faced this problem too, you’re not alone. So, we decided to compile a few effective methods to fix this issue on your iPhone. Since we’re quite reliant on auto-completing the searches on our web browser through suggestions, not being able to enable the option is indeed frustrating.

Here are seven different methods to fix Safari suggestions greyed out or not working on iPhone. The issue mostly arises due to a bug present in either the Safari app or your present iOS version. Hence, the methods below revolve around fixing such bugs. Let’s begin.

1. Clear Safari Data

After an extended period of browsing Safari, a large accumulation of cache and cookies will occur. However, they will not be useful after a certain point and hence, can be regarded as junk files. But apart from occupying storage space, these junk files infamously execute bugs as well.

Hence, they can certainly be a cause for Safari suggestions greyed out in the Settings app. Here’s how you can clear Safari data on your iPhone.

Step 1:  Open the Settings app and select Safari.

ios safari extensions grayed out

Step 2:  Tap on ‘Clear History and Website Data’ and select ‘Clear History and Data’ to confirm. This will delete your browsing history, stored cache, cookies, and saved passwords.

Click on Clear Website History and Data

If this doesn’t work, you can try restarting Safari. Let us understand how this helps.

2. Restart Safari

Closing an application shuts down the existing session. This means that all the elements are shut down too, including the bugs as well. Once you open the app again, there’s a chance of eliminating the bug causing the problem. This applies to Safari and the search suggestions toggle being greyed out too.

Here’s how to quickly restart Safari.

Step 1: Open the app switcher.

  • On iPhone with home button : Double tap the home button.
  • On iPhone without home button : Swipe up from the bottom of your screen.

Step 2: Close Safari from the app switcher.

Step 3: Lastly, open Safari from your app library to restart Safari.

3. Enable Siri Suggestions

While enabling or disabling Siri Suggestions is not known to have any effect on the Safari suggestions toggle, a community expert on Apple Community suggested this method and was marked as helpful. Hence, here’s how you can enable Siri suggestions on your iPhone.

Step 1: Open the Settings app.

Open Settings App on iPhone

Step 2: Tap on ‘Siri & Search’.

Step 3: Turn on the toggle for Show Suggestions.

ios safari extensions grayed out

However, it is also better to ensure that Safari does not have any restrictions on the screen time menu. Let’s know more about the same in the next section.

4. Disable Content Restrictions For Safari

There’s an option to restrict content on your iPhone, and it may be preventing you from restricting any content from Safari search suggestions and modifying the Safari suggestions toggle. Here’s how to disable content restrictions on your iPhone.

Step 2: Tap on Screen Time.

Open Settings App on iPhone

Step 3: Tap on ‘Content and Privacy Restrictions’.

Step 4: Turn off the toggle for ‘Content & Privacy Restrictions’.

You can now go back to Settings and check if the Safari suggestions toggle is greyed out or not.

ios safari extensions grayed out

But if this doesn’t work either, you can try restarting your iPhone.

5. Restart iPhone

“Have you tried turning it off and on again?” is probably the most common solution we get recommended when we have a problem with technology. It rightfully earns popularity, since it seems to fix a lot of problems – even on the iPhone.

When you restart your iPhone, you essentially start a fresh session. Therefore, there’s a good chance of eliminating all the bugs that were previously causing any issues. This holds for the issue of Safari suggestions greyed out as well. So, here’s how to restart your iPhone.

Step 1:  First, shut down your device.

  • On iPhone X and above : Press and hold the volume down and the side button.
  • On iPhone SE 2nd or 3rd gen, 7, and 8 series : Press and hold the side button.
  • On iPhone SE 1st gen, 5s, 5c, or 5 : Hold the power button at the top.

Restart iPhone

Step 2:  Now, drag the power slider to turn off the device.

Step 3:  Next, turn on your device by pressing and holding the power button on your iPhone.

6. Update iPhone

If Safari suggestions are greyed out for a large group of users, Apple will certainly take note of all the complaints across forums and release an iOS update to fix it. Therefore, ensure you remain on the latest version of iOS. Here’s how to check.

Step 1:  Open the Settings app and select General.

Click on General

Step 2:  Tap on Software Update and select Download and Install. This will download and install the latest iOS update for your iPhone.

Click on Software Update

However, if your iPhone is already updated to the latest version and the above method is not an option – you can try to reset your iPhone as a last resort.

7. Reset iPhone

To pinpoint a misconfiguration causing an issue on your iPhone is hard, hence you would want to consider bringing back all settings and configurations to their default states. This is exactly what resetting an iPhone does.

This means that all your location, home screen layout, privacy settings, and more will be back to default. Here’s how to do it.

Step 2:  Select ‘Transfer or Reset iPhone’.

Step 3:  Tap on Reset.

Select Transfer or Reset iPhone

Step 4:  Now, tap on ‘Reset All Settings’ to return all the settings and configurations of your iPhone to their default states.

Select Reset All Settings

That is everything you need to know on how to get rid of the Safari suggestions greyed-out issue on your Settings app. However, if you still have any further questions, look at the FAQ section below.

FAQs on Safari Suggestions Greyed Out

Yes. You can change the default search engine on Safari by opening the Settings app > Safari > Search Engine.

Yes. You can tap on the arrow mark icon next to the search suggestion to complete your search query in the search box automatically.

Never Run Out of Suggestions

We hope this article helped you fix a greyed-out Safari suggestions toggle. While Apple offers a relatively stable user experience, it still isn’t free from such bugs, especially on older iPhones. Thanks to the regular software updates on iPhone, Apple has been doing a good job of quickly providing a fix.

Disabling Safari Extensions on iOS 17: A Step-by-Step Guide

Disabling Safari extensions on iOS 17 is straightforward. Just head to your iPhone’s Settings, tap Safari, choose Extensions, and toggle off the extension you want to disable. After that, your browsing experience will revert to its default state without the features or changes the extension provided.

After disabling the extension, you won’t have access to its functionalities anymore when using Safari. This could mean less clutter on your browser, enhanced privacy, or faster loading times, depending on what the extension did.

You can also watch this video about how to turn off Safari extensions on iPhone for more information.

Introduction

Have you ever downloaded a Safari extension on your iPhone and later decided it’s not for you? Maybe it slowed down your browsing speed, or perhaps it just wasn’t as useful as you thought it would be. Whatever the reason, you’re now looking to disable it, and you’re in the right place to learn how to do just that.

Extensions can be incredibly useful tools, enhancing our browsing experiences in various ways. From ad blockers to password managers, they offer a range of functionalities that can make life on the internet much easier. However, sometimes extensions can cause more harm than good. They might conflict with other apps, pose privacy concerns, or simply take up unnecessary space. That’s why the ability to disable them is just as important as being able to install them. This article is particularly relevant to those who regularly update their iPhones and have recently installed iOS 17. Stick around, and you’ll be a Safari extension-whisperer in no time!

A Step by Step Tutorial

This section will guide you through the process of disabling an extension in Safari on an iPhone running iOS 17.

Step 1: Open Settings

Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

In the Settings app, scroll down until you find Safari and tap on it. This is where all your browser-related settings are managed.

Step 2: Tap Safari

Tap on the Safari option within Settings.

Once in the Safari settings, you will see various options related to your web browsing experience.

Step 3: Select Extensions

Select the Extensions menu option.

The Extensions menu will show you all the extensions you have currently installed on your Safari browser.

Step 4: Toggle Off the Extension

Find the extension you want to disable and toggle the switch to off.

By toggling off the extension, you are effectively disabling it from operating in Safari. The change is immediate, and there is no need to restart the browser or your iPhone.

There are several benefits to disabling Safari extensions that you no longer need or want.

Benefit 1: Improved Speed

Disabling unnecessary extensions can speed up your browsing experience.

Extensions can slow down your browser by consuming additional resources. By disabling them, you may notice an improvement in your Safari’s performance.

Benefit 2: Enhanced Privacy

Removing extensions can improve your online privacy.

Some extensions may track your browsing activity. By disabling them, you reduce the risk of your data being collected without your consent.

Benefit 3: Decluttered Interface

Your browser interface will be less cluttered without extra extensions.

A simpler browser interface can make for a more pleasant and streamlined browsing experience, especially if you prefer a minimalistic approach.

However, there are also some drawbacks to consider when disabling Safari extensions.

Drawback 1: Loss of Functionality

You will lose the features provided by the extension.

If you were relying on the extension for certain tasks, you’d have to find alternative ways to accomplish them.

Drawback 2: Manual Re-enabling

If you change your mind, you’ll have to manually re-enable the extension.

This can be a bit of a hassle, especially if you disable multiple extensions and later decide you need some of them back.

Drawback 3: Update Issues

Disabling an extension might cause issues if it was necessary for an update.

Some extensions are designed to work with specific versions of websites or software. If you disable one and then an update rolls out, it might not work properly anymore.

Additional Information

When managing your Safari extensions, it’s important to regularly review what you have installed. Sometimes we download extensions and forget about them, or they become obsolete as our browsing habits change. Plus, keeping your extensions updated is key. Developers often release patches and updates for their extensions, which can improve security and functionality.

It’s also worth noting that not all extensions are created equal. Some may have better privacy practices than others, so it’s wise to do a bit of research before downloading anything new.

  • Open Settings
  • Select Extensions
  • Toggle Off the Extension

How do I know if an extension is trustworthy?

Purchased Safari Extensions Are Greyed Out

Hello apple community,

ios safari extensions grayed out

iPhone SE, iOS 16

Posted on Feb 22, 2023 6:53 AM

Posted on Feb 23, 2023 2:17 PM

Thank you for the answer, hc

I did look at the article you mentioned, but it just didn’t help for my situation as, like you said, it appeared I had no extensions downloaded. None of the extensions I saw in the extension browsing section of the App Store offered what I was looking for. (I know this solution may have worked for others, so thank you!)

However, I did get help from Apple Support through text and was able to solve the problem. My issue was that some of my Content and Privacy Restrictions under Screentime (in settings) were interfering with the app’s ability to work.

ios safari extensions grayed out

after turning off content and privacy restrictions, I could allow the content blocker app to block certain pages on safari.

then I turned content and privacy restrictions back on, and the app works just like it’s supposed to :)

Hey there DragonTea,

Thanks for reaching out to the community.

From what we see, it doesn't look like you have any extensions installed. The app you currently see is a content blocker and not an extension.

You'll want to use the steps below to view and install supported Safari extensions on your iPhone:

1. Go to Settings   > Safari, then tap Extensions.
2. Tap More Extensions to browse through extensions in the App Store.
3. When you find one you want, tap the price, or if the app is free, tap Get, then follow the onscreen instructions.
