Really good guide, accommodations, and planning. We saw and learned a lot, but did not feel rushed. Everything a holiday should be
Everything about our Overland Ireland tour was a fulfillment of a dream. Our guide was knowledgeable, kind and personable. The bus was solid and clean. Ireland is a place of magic and we were immersed in its beauty. All That said I am extremely displeased with the service of Tour radar. Your communication skills are so sadly lacking. We went to the wrong starting point but it was the place YOU posted to go. We Wil NEVER se Tpur radar again. It was only through the kindness of our tour guide and several well placed phone calls that we actually got to go on the tour even though we were where we thought we needed to be at the right time.

Really wish they spelled out that the Ireland trip is just a portion of a larger trip - most of the people have already travelled together for two weeks, so that was kinda awkward. Great trip for 18-24 year old Australians.
Had an amazing trip!! Was far better than I could have possibly imagined and I would definitely book with Contiki again!!

The entire trip was wonderful, very well organized, and satisfying. Peter Flood was an excellent tour guide. He was as knowledgeable as could be, funny, and helpful; and really seems to love what he does.
This was my first time in Ireland. I absolutely loved everything about this trip. Tour guide and bus driver were amazing. Totally worth every penny. Would go back in a heartbeat

Incredible trip. Very well planned. Helpful and accommodations where spectacular. Don't worry about luggage!
The tour went as planned. The guide was excellent. Recommendations would be to extend the time to 8 or 9 days to maximize two days in Lahinch and Galway to experience more of the culture and scenery. One night in each of the cities does not allow for to that experience.

Loved that I was able to see so much.
Our tour guide, Poll, and driver, Sean made the tour so enjoyable. Their wit and wisdom was truly invaluable.

Excellent guide - very informative and expert bus driver!
I had the most wonderful time on the 10 Day Wild Irish Experience. Our group was only a small one but everyone got along very well and it was oftentimes more of a family outing than strangers travelling together. Our driver/guide Lee was very invested in all of our wellbeings - making sure everyone's interests and needs were met, and then going the extra mile in the little details (like carrying our bags or providing little insider tips on what to do or where to eat for every town we stayed in). He was always available to answer any questions our group might have and could also entertain with a story or background information about a town or region while we where driving to it or through it. Especially on the often narrow and winding Irish country roads he made sure everyone was comfortable during the twists and turn and I (having the seat upfront and the best view of the landscapes and vistas but also the roads and the traffic) always felt safe and in the most capable hands with him. Even though our trip took place in the pre-season, for the most part of it we got to enjoy very lovely weather, with blazing blue skies and already emerald green hills doing their reputation justice. When one of the destinations on our itinerary wasn't open yet for the season or closed for construction (this happened only on one or two occasions out of more than thirty-five), our driver/guide knew this beforehand because he checked with all of them - and the tour operators of Irish Experience provided more than adequate alternatives so that our group didn't miss out on anything. I can only recommend this tour most wholeheartedly and to everyone. It was an excellent introduction to the Irish culture and country and the lives of Irish people and has made me want to return soon to the island. Thank you to my lovely fellow travellers - but mostly to everyone at Irish Experience and to Lee!

Adrian was a great driver, I felt he did a wonderful job navigating the treacherous roads. Gordon, our team guide, was a good sport and tried his best to keep us all on schedule. He was knowledgeable, interesting and entertaining. I am not sure that he liked the driver though. There seemed to be some tension between them. I thought the Dingle peninsula area was spectacular. I loved the sheep dog demo, the farm visits and nature visits throughout. The hotels were all comfortable and clean. The breakfasts were plentiful. The entertainment options were lovely.
Had a great time! Our guide, Kathleen was great! She knew everything about Ireland and sprinkled in some great stories! I feel like we got a great look at the southern part of the country!

Wonderful trip. Saw a great variety of places.
My own research and a referral from a friend led us to book this trip which filled all our expectations and much more. Travel Director, bus driver, hotels and tour stops were outstanding in knowledge, service and location. Definitely will recommend this tour to family, friends, etc.

The communication/paperwork could use a little fine tuning, but overall the value was definitely there. This tour brings you through absolutely spectacular areas of Ireland, with enough downtime to not feel too rushed. The hotels/food was nicer than we expected for the price.
Just finished this great tour of Ireland with Indus Travel. Eddie, the tour bus driver, and Marian, our tour guide, were amazing. Great info about the areas we traveled, history and local stories.

We had to spend our own money to visit Ross castle and places. Which was inconvenient since there's no taxi available. Guide should have dropped and picked us up.
I checked all the boxes off for me going to Ireland, saw a lot of Ireland in a week. Guide was exceptional in his knowledge of Ireland. A 5 star experience for me seeing everything I wanted

Our small groups guarantee Never more than 26 guests per tour

We always keep our tour group sizes small. That's because we want every guest to get the comfort, space and service they deserve. Although many other companies squeeze in groups of up to 50, even the largest of our tour packages are strictly limited to just 26 guests. That leaves empty seats on the coaches. So why do we limit our tours to such small group sizes? Here are six reasons.

Superior Service

Guests consistently list our small group sizes as a top reason why they would book with us again. See our reviews...

More focus on you

With a smaller group, our tour guides have more time to get to know you and your interests.

We deliberately leave empty seats on our coaches, so you can relax and spread out.

Experience each attraction up-close and personal, with more time to ask questions and see what interests you.

Speedier Check-Ins

Compared with many of our rivals, our smaller group sizes make checking in and out of the hotels a breeze.

More Relaxed Pace

Experience Ireland at your own pace. No rushing to keep up and no waiting around for large groups to assemble.

Ireland Tours & Vacations

Dunguaire castle at sunset, reflected in the water, near Galway, Ireland

The Emerald Isle: where the rhythm is slower, the people are warmer, the spirit is fuller, and the earth is richer.

Irish hospitality may be a cliché – right up there with leprechauns and kissing the Blarney Stone – but when you take a  tour in Ireland  (whether that's in Galway or down   South ) you realize that this enchanting republic revels in its old-school approach to life. Connemara really is as brooding and lonely as we’ve been led to believe. The Dublin of James Joyce still lingers on in odd pockets of the city. The Guinness really is that good. If you want to enjoy your holiday, it’s best to leave your cynicism at the door and grab Ireland with both hands: learn the folklore of Roscommon and Donegal,   road trip your way along the south's coastline , go searching for faeries in Knocknerea Mountain, moan about the inclement weather and (above all) embrace the craic.

Best time to visit ireland.

Don’t forget your umbrella! Although the wettest time of year is from October to April, rain is pretty much a guarantee year round. Summer, June to August, promises better weather, and the long days are welcome even if the sun isn’t shining. May, June and September are great months to holiday in Ireland, as there are fewer tourists, more daylight and it’s usually relatively warm for Irish standards). July and August are the country’s busier months, but the festivals, events and good craic that take over the country more than make up for the increase in tourists.

History and government

Early history.

Tumultuous is a good word to describe Ireland’s often troubled and sorrowful history, which is filled with invasion, repression, deadly conflict, religious discrimination and emigration. Ireland’s history dates back to 8000 BC, and progressed from a hunter-gatherer society to an agricultural one. Christianity came to the island in the 5th century, replacing the old tribal and Druid societies, though many of the Celtic traditions were preserved. In the 800s, the Vikings started invading and regularly raided and plundered the island for upwards of two centuries. They set up settlements (most notably Dublin), but were eventually pushed out of Ireland by the Irish king Muirecán. (Ireland was then made up of many small kingdoms, who fought each other for dominance of other counties and the entire island.) Then came the Normans. When an exiled Irish king sought help from (English) King Henry II, he sent Norman forces to (successfully) recapture the Irish King’s counties. This event established Norman lords in Ireland, who soon ruled big tracts of Iand. This worried Henry II so much he invaded in person in 1172. Now it was not only Irish lords that were battling for control of the country, but Norman and English ones as well.

Fast forward to 1536 and Henry VIII, who tried to conquer Ireland and extend English law over the country. This was met with fierce resistance, especially when he tried to convert the Irish Catholics to Protestants. This opened up a brutal few centuries, where the endeavor for Protestant rule over Ireland led to many atrocities and battles. In the 1600s, land was confiscated from Catholics and given to Protestant settlers (known as the Plantations), triggering the first wave of mass Irish emigration. Remaining Catholics were subject to persecution, with their rights becoming less and less as time went on.

The Irish Rebellion of 1798, led by the republican United Irishmen (who wanted to overthrow British rule and have a non-sectarian republic) was brutally quelled and Irish self-government was abolished. From 1845 - 49, Ireland suffered the Great Famine, which saw over a million people die from starvation and disease, and a million or more emigrate. Understandably, relations between the Irish people and the British got worse, as the government had many means to stop the severity of the famine. Another tragedy was that this period (along with other factors) contributed to English largely replacing the Irish language. From this time until 1912, there were many attempts at reinstating home rule (Irish self-government) and a number of rebellions were instigated but failed. It was also when two distinct groups emerged: the Irish nationalists (who wanted Ireland to be independent and governed by the Irish) and Irish unionists (who considered themselves British and wanted to remain in the union).

Recent history

In 1922, after the Irish War of Independence and many years of fighting, the Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed and Ireland was divided into Northern Ireland (six counties) and Southern Ireland (26 counties), known as the Irish Free State. This lead to the Irish Civil War, fought between those who wanted a unified Ireland and those who wanted to keep Northern Ireland under British rule. The Irish Republican Army (IRA) lost, and Northern Ireland remained ruled by Britain.

The Irish Free State was a predominantly Catholic state and the Roman Catholic church had a massive impact on the formation of the country, as it had over much of Irish history. In 1949, the Republic of Ireland was established and left the British Commonwealth. Up until the late 1990s, the economy of Ireland struggled and emigration was an ongoing problem. Unfortunately the economic boom of the 90s and 2000s has faltered, and economic troubles have once again returned. That said, the conservatism of the Catholic church has lost its grip over society, with many social reforms that would have once been unthinkable being implemented in the 90s.

After the division of the counties in 1922, Northern Ireland became a predominantly Protestant state. Years of violence between pro-British Unionists and pro-Irish Republicans have marked its history, which is a complicated and bloody beast woven with political, ethnic and religious differences. It is as fascinating as it is heartbreaking, and worth reading about in a sphere that can do it justice. See our list of recommended books for books detailing this period.

Top 5 Irish mythical creatures

1. leprechauns.

They are Ireland’s most well known mythical characters. They are male faeries who take the form of an old shoemaker and are depicted with mischief in their eyes. Leprechauns are the source of practical jokes, have the ability to grant wishes and have untold riches buried away.

A banshee is a female faerie who is said to emit an other-worldly wail when someone is about to die. While usually heard rather than seen, reports of sightings range from the sight of a beautiful woman who utters a low, pleasant singing to a crone who emits a soul-chilling shriek.

They are creatures that are seals in the water but are human once they shed their skin on land. They are often linked with tales of ill-fated romance, where either a human has stolen the selkie’s skin so they can’t return to the water (and must marry the human) or a human is taken to the depths of the ocean to be their spouse.

4. Dullahan

A dullahan carries its head under its arm and rides a black stallion – and sometimes drives a wagon made out of skeletons! Its mission is to claim souls, stopping only to call out the name of the person who will die. Those who try to watch him will endure a bucket of blood thrown at them or a whip made out of a spinal cord. Only gold can scare it.

A merrow is the Gaelic version of a mermaid/merman – a half-human, half-fish creature with an amiable and benevolent nature. They are known to lure handsome men to live under the sea, but are also capable of living with humans and marrying them. They have a special hat called a cohuleen druith, and can’t return to the water if they lose it.

Top places to visit in Ireland

1. cliffs of moher.

Take your Irish holiday to a level that’s as high as the Cliffs of Moher themselves as you peer over the brink of these monolithic edges. Both vertical and abrupt in stature, these cliff faces provide monumental views over Galway Bay and out to the Aran Islands. Listen to the powerful waves crash against the sandstone far, far below and let the salty smell of the sea breeze calm your mind and lift your soul.

Trip: Northern & Southern Ireland

2. Aran Islands

Just when you thought Ireland couldn’t get any more spellbinding, the Aran Islands with their staggering cliffs, Celtic churches, and World Heritage Listed sites, peak out above the waters of Galway Bay to prove you wrong. Follow your local leader as you explore, not only the rugged coastline but also the ruins and remains of both the Bronze and Iron Ages for a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

3. Ring of Kerry

From the tranquil sound of Torc Waterfall to the imposing monument that is Staigue Fort, the Ring of Kerry only adds to Ireland’s collection of unspoiled natural wonders. Stop in at bucolic villages such as Killarney, Beaufort, and Kenmare on the 179km circular journey and continue to adventure through ‘the Ring’ by private vehicle to see some shepherds in action on a local farm visit.

To be sure you get the full Irish experience you can’t go past ordering a pint of Guinness at a local pub in the republic’s capital of Dublin. Wandering through the cobbled streets of this electric city is thirsty work and you only need to stop in at one of the many refreshment-ready establishments to get your liquid fill. With a bitter, roasted taste and a texture that goes down (a little too) smooth, you’ll be ordering another round in no time.

5. The Wicklow Way

Known as the oldest, long-distance trail in Ireland, the Wicklow Way offers a whole heap of scenic experiences from passing through open moorland and forested heaths to walking beside fast-flowing mountain streams. If those views aren’t enough to convince you of Ireland’s beauty, then exploring Glendalough Valley’s monastic settlements and peering into deep, sapphire-colored lakes ought to do the trick.

Trip: Walk the Wicklow Way

6. Ballysaggartmore Towers

If you’re wondering what your next stop is on your journey to find some of Ireland’s most magical places, then let us introduce you to the Ballysaggartmore Towers. Created in a gothic style, these towers are both imposing and idyllic, situated in a fairytale-like wooded area that’s perfect for picnics. Join your tour on a walk of the grounds and imagine what it would have been like to roam the ornate stone halls.

Trip: Ireland: Kilkenny & Surrounds

7. Killarney National Park

While the small and charming town of Killarney is well worth a visit in its own right, it’s the dramatic and rugged mountain range that sits alongside it that elevates this scenic spot to the top of any ‘must-see’ list. Featuring the highest peak in Ireland in McGillycuddy’s Reeks and some of the world’s most recognizable lakes and waterfalls, this national park deserves to be explored. And admired. And loved.

Chris, our Nordic Visitor Travel Consultant, was very responsive to every email that I sent and answered any questions that I had. We had 4 in our group and it was simple to have 2 single rooms and 1 double and add days at the beginning and the end of our trip just from their website. A welcome package was waiting for us at our first hotel that included detailed information about our trip and a map with highlighted roads and points of interest along the way. Our accommodation ranged from small boutique hotels to resort hotels. Each was close to the city centre and excellent! Breakfast was included each morning which made it easy to get going. It was nice to have our accommodation and car secured for us so we only worried about where we were going to explore each day! We highly recommend Nordic Visitor and will definitely use them in the future!

Dingle Peninsula, Ireland

Ireland vacations 2024 & 2025

  • Dingle Peninsula

Renowned for its warm welcome, literary genius, live music and green fields, Ireland is a small isle with enormous character. It's compact enough to explore easily, yet also incredibly diverse. Our Ireland specialists have a deep affinity with the island — north and south — and can bring you closer to the landscapes and the Irish people even at its most famous attractions such as Giant's Causeway.

Our Ireland specialists know the country inside out and can lead you to experiences you won’t find in a guidebook. On a tailor-made vacation to Ireland with Audley, you’ll see the highlights — and much more — your way. We’ll design your ideal trip with you, paying close attention to your interests, your travel style and your budget.

Try kayaking to romantic ruins on the Lakes of Killarney , take a literary pub crawl around Dublin or gain an introduction to Northern Ireland’s political history on a black taxi tour of Belfast. We also recommend getting well off the beaten path in places like the little-visited Beara Peninsula or along the stone-walled roads of the island of Inis Mór. Wherever you go, you'll be welcomed with that legendary Irish charm, regaled with stories and persuaded that the only way to do this place justice would be to plan a return visit.

Useful information for planning your vacation in Ireland

Ireland has two official languages English and Irish. Irish is a Celtic language related to Scots Gaelic, Welsh, and Breton, and is predominantly spoken in Gaeltacht areas in the west of Ireland but you’ll see it on road signs and all official documentation.

In the Republic of Ireland, which covers roughly five-sixths of the island of Ireland, the currency is the euro (€), while In Northern Ireland, which is a part of the United Kingdom, the currency is the pound sterling (GBP).

ATMs are easy to find, all major credit and debit cards are accepted, and contactless payments are accepted almost everywhere. Euros can be used across Europe, but Northern Ireland notes, which are different to those used elsewhere in the UK, are often unfamiliar to retailers outside Ireland and it may be best to exchange those in a bank or post office.

A standard tip in Ireland is between 10% and 15% for a restaurant meal. Check the total though — a gratuity is often added automatically. Tipping in pubs and bars is not expected. Drivers, guides, and hotel staff will appreciate a tip, but it isn’t always expected.

For the latest travel advice for Ireland, including entry requirements, health information, and the safety and security situation, please refer to the State Department website .

Food and drink is a huge part of Irish culture and in recent years the focus has been on locally sourced and seasonal produce, artisan food stuffs, and distinctive regional products.

Being an island nation, fish and seafood is plentiful. You’ll find delicate smoked salmon, creamy chowders, and fresh oysters and mussels along the coast. Although traditional dishes such as Irish stew, colcannon (mashed potato with cabbage and scallions) and boxty (fried grated potato) still appear on some menus, you’re more likely to encounter pan-European influences in most dishes.

Traditional Irish soda bread remains a local staple and you’ll find it in all shops and on most breakfast plates. Although Guinness, Ireland’s rich, full-bodied stout, is served everywhere, in Cork, order a pint of Beamish, a locally brewed rival with a more substantial bite. Whiskey distilleries are long established in Ireland, but craft beer and cider are also gaining ground.

A small island with a rich history and culture, dramatic landscapes, and a fair bit of rain, Ireland provides a wealth of experiences for the visitor. You could follow in the footsteps of literary heavyweights such as Joyce, Wilde, or Beckett on a literary pub crawl in Dublin, delve into prehistory on a guided tour of the Neolithic passage graves in Newgrange and the Boyne Valley , or discover the wonders of the Giant’s Causeway and the Antrim Coast .

Romantic castle ruins, wild national parks, and stone-walled fields litter the country, and whether you’d enjoy visiting cheesemongers and chocolatiers on a Dublin food tour , sipping peaty spirits at the Jameson Distillery , or exploring the Cliffs of Moher by boat , Ireland offers plenty of choice.

The choice of places to stay in Ireland is as varied as the landscape. You can stay in historic castles decorated in opulent traditional style, fishing lodges nestled in secluded valleys, or urban hideaways with sleek, contemporary design. The Irish are renowned for their hospitality, and whether you choose to stay in a family-run guesthouse or a plush, urban hotel, you’ll find a special welcome waiting.

In Belfast, history and grandeur combine in the Merchant Hotel . In Kilkenny, you can stay in stately Butler House, former home of the Earls of Ormonde, while on the shores of Lough Erne, you can stargaze in a dome as you fall asleep to the sound of the water. To get some ideas, browse our collection of places to stay in Ireland , and start planning your trip.

Most trips to Ireland begin in Dublin, the Republic’s capital. It’s a beguiling place where political and literary history collide, and local life never takes itself too seriously. From Dublin , you can head west to see the wild, raw beauty of Connemara , the otherworldly landscape of the Burren , or to join an impromptu traditional music session in Galway , Westport, or Doolin.

Discover Donegal’s deserted beaches or hike along the towering cliffs at Slieve League , visit the Dark Hedges that featured in the Game of Thrones , Belfast’s poignant Titanic Museum , or learn about the city’s troubled past on a black cab tour .

To the south, Cork has a character so strong its people joke about it becoming their own republic, Killarney sits at the foot of the country’s highest peaks, and Dingle is all windswept beaches and pubs that have changed little with the passage of time.

A direct flight to Dublin from New York City takes just over six and a half hours. From Boston it’s six hours, from Seattle nine hours, and from San Francisco, it’s ten hours. Aer Lingus, Ireland’s national carrier, is the only airline offering direct flights to the west coast, although some routes only operate during the summer months.

The time zone in Ireland is UTC+1 hour. Daylight Savings Time is observed from late-March to late-October.

Self driving in Ireland is easy and efficient and is one of the best ways to get around. You’ll need to be comfortable driving on the left, however. Trains are modern and reliable, but the rail network is a little limited and if you choose to travel by train, you’re likely to need to use buses or taxis as well. We can also arrange private drivers to take you directly to your destination.

There’s no border control between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland and if you’re driving, the only difference you might notice is a subtle change in the road signs and markings.

US citizens do not need a visa to visit Ireland for stays of up to 90 days.

Your doctor can provide you with immunization advice for Ireland. You can also check the recommended vaccinations by visiting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website . Ensuring you’re up to date with all vaccinations recommended at home before you travel is also a good idea.

You'll need at least one blank page in your passport, which should be valid for at least the duration of your stay, or at least six months after your travel dates if you are traveling onwards to a continental European country.

Let the magic of France unfold before you. Explore the 10 Best France Tour Companies that promise an unforgettable French experience. Your journey through the heart of France begins here.

Ireland, known for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, is a welcoming destination. English is widely spoken, and the official currency is the Euro. The weather can be unpredictable, so pack layers and waterproof gear. Familiarize yourself with local customs, such as the importance of greetings and the pub culture. Driving is on the left side of the road, and public transportation options are available in cities.

The ideal duration for touring Ireland depends on your preferences and the areas you want to explore. A week allows you to cover highlights like Dublin, the Cliffs of Moher, and the Ring of Kerry. For a more comprehensive experience, a 10–14-day trip lets you delve into both popular and off-the-beaten-path destinations, immersing yourself in the Irish charm.

The best way to tour Ireland largely depends on your preferences. Renting a car offers flexibility to explore remote areas and scenic routes, while guided tours provide informative insights into Irish history and culture. Public transportation is efficient in cities, and a combination of methods might suit different parts of your journey.

To travel to Ireland, ensure you have a valid passport. If you’re from the European Union or European Economic Area, an ID card may be sufficient. Non-EU/EEA visitors may need a visa, depending on their nationality. Travel insurance, proof of accommodation, and a return ticket are also advisable. Check the latest entry requirements from the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS) before your trip.

The best time to visit Ireland is during the late spring to early autumn (May to September). During these months, the weather is milder, and the landscapes are lush and vibrant. However, be prepared for occasional rain at any time. Winter (December to February) offers fewer crowds, but some attractions and services may have reduced hours.

For many nationalities, obtaining a visa to Ireland is relatively straightforward. If you’re from a visa-exempt country, you can stay up to 90 days for tourism or business purposes without a visa. However, it’s crucial to check the specific requirements for your nationality on the INIS website and apply well in advance if needed. Overall, the process is generally manageable for most travelers.

If I could give Zicasso’s travel partner more than five stars, I would! We had an amazing vacation! Our travel agent was unbelievably friendly, flexible, detail-oriented, knowledgeable, and patient in planning this trip! We were a group of 10 (five couples in our 50s), off to celebrate my 30th wedding anniversary. Having gone on an all-inclusive beach vacation for our 25th, we all wanted to go to Ireland, but other than knowing about Guinness and the Cliffs of Moher, we needed someone to help with the itinerary. Happily, our travel agent was able to put together an amazing 10-day plan that suited all of our desires and expectations. She also matched us up with our driver, who would be our knowledgeable, careful, fabulous, and funny chaperone while we were there. From the moment we met him until our hug goodbye, he kept us entertained and informed. All accommodations were centrally located and we were able to stay one night in a castle! Ahhh, to be queen for a day.

The trip was wonderful and the support from the travel agency was unstinting. From the first day, they were quickly responsive and continually exceeded our expectations. We had no hiccups along the way, so we didn't need to call on them during the trip, but I am confident they would have sorted any issue that arose.  Their reputation was reinforced by our guide in Bath, who said they were a great company to work with and emphasized that anybody who "picked up the phone" would provide the high level of service we'd experienced.

We thoroughly enjoyed our first trip to Italy and Zicasso's travel partner did a marvelous job putting it all together. They were able to get things set up promptly as it was under three months from the time we decided to schedule the trip to the departure date. During that time, it went from being just my husband and me to adding our three adult sons, and they helped readjust the schedule and budget to make it more affordable for five of us. All three hotels (Rome, Florence, and Venice) were excellent regarding location, cleanliness, and customer service. That we were American and were unfamiliar with Italian transportation because we had never been to Italy, it was extremely nice to have private transfers and all the train transfers set up. Even when we arrived by train in Venice, they had a person there to meet us and assist with transport to the water taxi, then walk us to the hotel. Everyone was professional, helpful, and on time. The tour guides were also wonderful and so well-educated. There were several modifications needed as we worked through the itinerary and changes to who was coming when, and our tour operator was very easy to work with on these. The only negative was that it was non-refundable if you needed to cancel in the 70 days before departure, even though many of the hotels stated refundable if canceled within a few days. Many tours I looked at and used on this trip could be canceled and refunded within 24 hours. I found this a much safer way to schedule tours and not lose out if there were any issues affecting our tour days. It's always a risk not knowing if someone in the group will be ill or injured and not able to participate. There is a $250 service fee for each change if the team needs to make changes once the final itinerary has been completed, so that does need to be taken into consideration. We were fortunate that we did not need to make any last-minute changes. I would strongly recommend our travel agency and will use them for our next trip.

Our anniversary trip to Scotland and Ireland, planned by Zicasso’s travel company, was unforgettable! Our travel agent was very easy to work with! She made several adjustments to our itinerary at our request and also to address some of the vendor's changes, such as one of our flights (originally from Inverness to Dublin) and one of our "in a local home, dinner and cooking lessons" (originally in Scotland). She was cognizant of my budget constraints and suggested I do some of the driving myself to reduce the cost of private drivers. Then, during our trip, little things like a wine and cheese board in our room upon our arrival in Edinburgh were very much appreciated! Also, when things didn't go as planned (flight delay from Aberdeen to Dublin), she was available (at 2am Pacific time) to help smooth out the bumps! Even the way our trip itinerary built up to a subtle crescendo with our stay in a castle made this a trip we will never forget!

Our Zicasso travel partner listened to our preferences and needs, and helped design a fabulous trip for our family. Transportation was flawless throughout the trip and the local guides were wonderful. We enjoyed getting to know them personally and learning about their hometowns. I especially valued the app that provided us with every detail for each day, including emergency contacts, hotel information, and itinerary. Thank you!

This is the third time I have used Zicasso to arrange travel. As is usually the case, Zicasso provided two prospective local travel agents for the intended trip. In the other two instances, I had some difficulty in deciding which agency to choose. Not the case with our travel agent. After conferring with her once, she immediately got what we were looking for. She generated a preliminary proposal, which was pretty close to the mark, and our decision was easy. Following this initial phase, our travel agent put together a lodging proposal based on our input and drew up a proposed itinerary. I say "proposed" as it was very much an outline. We were nearly entirely self-driving, so what we did each day was of our own choosing, based on her suggestions. This worked out perfectly, as we were largely free to alter the itinerary as necessary, such as due to inclement weather. Our travel agent did, however, book some very judiciously chosen excursions, such as a day trip to Inishmore with a private guide, which was phenomenal, and the Connoisseur Experience at The Guinness Storehouse in Dublin, which, as a non-beer drinker, I found totally enthralling. The highlight of the hotel choices was definitely the castle. An amazing property! I found our travel agent easy to work with, very communicative before and during the trip, and would highly recommend working with her.

Ireland - Private Travel

The heart and soul of the Emerald Isle is its friendly people, lush landscape, engrossing history and generous hospitality.

Ireland is a country with depth, from its literary masterpieces to its toe-tapping traditional music.

Your luxury Ireland vacation begins in Dublin, where private guided tours take you into Dublin Castle, through the fascinating Irish Emigration Museum and the fun Guinness Museum, over to Trinity College and around St. Stephen’s Green. Grafton Street shopping and Temple Bar pubbing is also the order of the afternoon. Heading south into the heart of the country, the 12th-century Rock of Cashel is Ireland’s most visited site, along with the secret passageways of Blarney Castle, built more than 600 years ago, home to the famous Blarney Stone. Around to the Atlantic side, the Ring of Kerry is a scenic 100-mile driving route around the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, taking in the craggy coastline and hazy seaside towns. Avid motorists can also hop on the Wild Atlantic Way, the longest coastal touring roadway in the world at 1,500 miles. The colorful and cultural city of Galway is a natural stopping-off point. In Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom, add the legendary Giant’s Causeway to the list. This UNESCO World Heritage Site on the north coast is a geological anomaly of hexagonal stone columns reaching out into the sea. To reach it, drive the Coastal Causeway to or from Belfast, a shoreline tour of pastoral perfection.

Ireland Tour Agencies - Solo Travel

Hello fellow travelers! I am planning a solo trip (possibly joined by a friend) to Scotland and Ireland during the second half of July 2024 (including one day for which I have tickets for The Open at Royal Troon golf course), roughly 6-7 in each country. I have a friend in Scotland who can be my guide, but plan to fly from Gaslgow to Ireland and joing a group tour (not too expensive; I don't want to rent a car/drive). I am a woman in my late 60s and physically active, enjoy learning about other cultures with locals and visiting the main highlights/points of interest. Has anyone traveled thru " Just Go Holidays " or can recommend another local tour company? Do Americans need a visa to enter either of those two countries? Recommendations for 3* hotels in the Glasgow area are also appreciated. Thank you!

No you don't need a visa.

Take a look at Rabbies for tours. I've taken a few tours with them and they are popular on this board.

I've never heard of Just Go Holidays.

I was in my late twenties when I did Ireland, and went with a friend. We did a tour and I honestly can’t remember which tour group we used, but it was one of these two. Most people were in their 20s-30s but there was no age limit and there were a few people in their 40-50s. And one woman in her 70s who put us all to shame when it came to hiking, climbing, etc. Most of the group did the hostel accommodations but we did the upgrade to bed and breakfasts, which I would do again.

https://www.shamrockeradventures.com/

https://www.paddywagontours.com/

I've not used Just Go Holidays but have heard negative reports from some people who have used them... Overall they don't get very good reviews on Trip Advisor either. Just Go aren't a local company, they are a national based in Cheltenham and cover the whole country. I would follow up the companies already mentioned. They all get much better reviews!

Be sure to dig in to the Trip Advisor link Wasley's posted. One of the main complaints I see is tour hotels in poor locations with some stating their hotels were in "industrial estates" with no restaurants nearby. You do NOT want that as a solo woman traveler.

I see you don't want a tour to be too expensive but you might look at the Rick Steves Heart of Ireland if it goes to some of the places you are interested in. Rick's tours are great for solo travelers and you can be guaranteed that the hotel locations will be convenient to restaurants and in safe locations.

https://www.ricksteves.com/tours/ireland/heart-ireland

I hope you find something that will work for you. I have done a lot of tours, both Rick Steves (12 tours) and Road Scholar (13 tours) and this year have done 2 tours from Seymour Travels. I am a solo traveler and my first concern after itinerary is to make sure the hotels are in a safe and convenient. location. I'd caution you about low-priced tours...seriously you get what you pay for. I'm not up to paying for the very high end tours so go mid-range to make sure I'm in good locations.

Here is a link to the Road Scholar search page for Ireland even though it does not look like any are short enough for your stated time frame. Their search engine is awful as they've included several tours in England, Wales and Scotland but the Irish tours are listed first.

https://www.roadscholar.org/find-an-adventure?query=ireland

I guess what I am also suggesting is to look at Rick's and Road Scholar's itineraries AND the hotels listed and use that as a yardstick for other tour companies.

Check out Vagabond Tours. They have small group tours at reasonable prices. I took an 11 day Driftwood Tour that was great. They have shorter tours, and some that are more active.

NASA Picks 3 Companies to Help Astronauts Drive Around the Moon

The agency’s future moon buggies will reach speeds of 9.3 miles per hour and will be capable of self-driving.

An illustration of a lunar rover that resembles a futuristic car with headlights on and an astronaut in a spacesuit sitting at the controls, sitting on the rocky surface of the moon. The words "Moon Racer" are illuminated above the astronaut's head.

By Kenneth Chang

NASA will be renting some cool wheels to drive around the moon.

Space agency officials announced on Wednesday that they have hired three companies to come up with preliminary designs for vehicles to take NASA astronauts around the lunar south polar region in the coming years. After the astronauts return to Earth, these vehicles would be able to self-drive around as robotic explorers, similar to NASA’s rovers on Mars.

The self-driving capability would also allow the vehicle to meet the next astronaut mission at a different location.

“Where it will go, there are no roads,” Jacob Bleacher, the chief exploration scientist at NASA, said at a news conference on Wednesday. “Its mobility will fundamentally change our view of the moon.”

The companies are Intuitive Machines of Houston, which in February successfully landed a robotic spacecraft on the moon ; Lunar Outpost of Golden, Colo.; and Venturi Astrolab of Hawthorne, Calif. Only one of the three will actually build a vehicle for NASA and send it to the moon.

NASA had asked for proposals of what it called the lunar terrain vehicle, or L.T.V., that could drive at speeds up to 9.3 miles per hour, travel a dozen miles on a single charge and allow astronauts to drive around for eight hours.

The agency will work with the three companies for a year to further develop their designs. Then NASA will choose one of them for the demonstration phase.

The L.T.V. will not be ready in time for the astronauts of Artemis III, the first landing in NASA’s return-to-the-moon program , which is currently scheduled for 2026 .

The plan is for the L.T.V. to be on the lunar surface ahead of Artemis V, the third astronaut landing that is expected in 2030, said Lara Kearney, manager of the extravehicular activity and human surface mobility program at the NASA Johnson Space Center.

“If they can get there earlier, we’ll take it earlier,” Ms. Kearney said.

The L.T.V. contract will be worth up to $4.6 billion over the next 15 years — five years of development and then a decade of operations on the moon, most of it going to the winner of this competition. But Ms. Kearney said the contracts allow NASA to later finance the development of additional rovers, or allow other companies to compete in the future.

The contract follows NASA’s recent strategy of purchasing services rather than hardware.

In the past, NASA paid aerospace companies to build vehicles that it then owned and operated. That included the Saturn V rocket, the space shuttles and the lunar roving vehicles — popularly known as moon buggies — that astronauts drove on the moon during the last three Apollo missions in 1971 and 1972.

The new approach has proved successful and less expensive for the transportation of cargo and astronauts to the International Space Station. NASA now pays companies, notably Elon Musk’s SpaceX, fixed fees for those services, more akin to plane tickets or FedEx shipments.

For the company chosen to build the L.T.V., the vehicle will remain its property, and that company will be able to rent it to other customers when it is not needed by NASA.

“It’s commercially available for us as a commercial business to sell capacity on that rover,” said Steve Altemus, the chief executive of Intuitive Machines, “and do that for international partners and for other commercial companies and space agencies around the world.”

The competition created alliances between small startups and larger, more established aerospace companies, as well as car companies. The Intuitive Machines team includes Boeing, Northrop Grumman and Michelin, the tire maker. Lunar Outpost added to its team Lockheed Martin, Goodyear and General Motors, which had helped design the Apollo moon buggies.

Astrolab is working with Axiom Space of Houston, which has sent private astronauts to the space station and is building a commercial module to the International Space Station. Astrolab announced last year that it had signed an agreement to send one of its rovers to the moon on a SpaceX Starship rocket as early as 2026. That mission is independent of whether it is selected by NASA, a company spokesman said.

While Lunar Outpost is competing with Intuitive Machines on this contract, it plans to work with the company separately, sending smaller robotic rovers to the moon on the company’s lunar landers.

What’s Up in Space and Astronomy

Keep track of things going on in our solar system and all around the universe..

Never miss an eclipse, a meteor shower, a rocket launch or any other 2024 event  that’s out of this world with  our space and astronomy calendar .

Scientists may have discovered a major flaw in their understanding of dark energy, a mysterious cosmic force . That could be good news for the fate of the universe.

A new set of computer simulations, which take into account the effects of stars moving past our solar system, has effectively made it harder to predict Earth’s future and reconstruct its past.

Interpol add Ireland date to 2024 ‘Antics’ 20th anniversary UK and European tour

The band will now wrap up the tour in Dublin this November

Interpol have added an Ireland date to their 2024 ‘Antics’ 20th anniversary UK and European tour .

Last month the indie veterans announced plans to play their second LP in full across the UK in November, which will include stops in Manchester, Glasgow, London and more.

Now, they will wrap up their anniversary shows at Dublin’s 3Arena on November 10. General sale tickets go live on Friday, April 12 at 9am BST from here . Fans can also access the exclusive pre-sale at 9am BST on Tuesday (April 9) by registering with The Big House fan community by 8:55am BST the same day.

The ‘Antics’ tour kicks off at The Halls in Wolverhampton on November 1. Support on the London date at Alexandra palace (November 8) will come from Dust and Iceage .

Interpol guitarist Daniel Kessler recently spoke to NME about the legacy of their second album , sharing: “‘Bright Lights’ was our first record, so we had a tiny budget and a small amount of time in the studio and had to make a very ‘live’ record. That record was really how the band sounded on stage at that moment. We just wanted to do that justice.

He went on: “We were focussed on that and being reasonable with what we could accomplish. For ‘Antics’, we had the experience of having made a record and then toured for two years. When we came out of that, we wanted to make the studio work for us a bit more and get more out of the songs. There are more textures and the songs really hold you in the moment a little bit more.

Interpol’s ‘Antics’ 20th anniversary UK and Ireland tour dates are:

NOVEMBER 1 – Wolverhampton, The Halls 2 – Manchester, O2 Apollo 4 – Glasgow, Royal Concert Hall 5 – Newcastle, O2 City Hall 7 – Bristol, Beacon 8 – London, Alexandra Palace 10 – Dublin, 3Arena

Elsewhere in their conversation with NME , Kessler spoke about launching fanclub The Big House. “We’re not one of those bands who filmed every single thing that we did, but we’re trying to figure out what we do have, what our friends have and what we can share,” he said. “There are some things in the archive that hadn’t made it out to our fans yet. It’s been fun to try and create a little bit more of a community.”

In other news from the band, Interpol recently announced a huge free show in Mexico City , scheduled to take place later this month.
