You’ll find a full array of features with Wipr, which not only blocks apps and trackers, but cryptocurrency miners, EU cookie and GDPR notices and anything else that gets in your way of surfing the web. Its blocklist gets updated twice a week, and there’s little configuration; the idea is that you load Wipr and forget that it’s there while it does its job in the background.

Firefox Focus is another addition to Mozilla's family of browsers. This one's a privacy-oriented version of Firefox that bakes in ad-blocking and anti-tracking into a light and functional package. Firefox Focus blocks ads and speeds up browsing, while also working in privacy-friendly features like automatic history and cookie clearing. 

Users can selectively block ads, analytics, content and social trackers with easy toggles, turn on a "stealth" mode, and set a default search engine.

3. AdClear (Android, iOS)

AdClear — or AdClear Plus if you're searching for the iOS version — offers the kind of mobile ad blocking in browsers that similar apps provide. But AdClear takes it one step farther by also blocking ads in apps. 

AdClear achieves this through a DNS changer feature that routes traffic through a VPN. AdClear doesn't catch everything in all apps, and in our experience, some apps ran a little slower. But this free download can put a stop to ads interrupting what you're trying to do whether in an app or a browser.

Some times, blocking ads can also prevent websites fromn pulling needed resoruces and libraries from third-party sources, breaking web pages in the process. Decentraleyes tries to stop that from happening by acting as a local content delivery network emulator to serve up the files that websites need. By doing so, this extension can stop websites from sending out requests to the likes of Google Hosted Libraries.

Think of Decentraleyes as a complement to ad blockers. In fact, the extension specifically says it can work with uBlock Origin and AdBlock Plus, both of which we recommend up above.

2. Opera (Desktop, Android, iOS)

The Opera browser bakes in ad-blocking features into the browser without the need for an extra add-on, while also offering privacy-friendly tools such as an unlimited, built-in VPN service, incognito mode, fraud and malware warnings for suspicious links and pages, and more. In addition, you can further customize Opera's capabilities with a wide array of extensions. 

Mobile users need not fret, as the Android version comes with just about everything the desktop version has but built for touch-screen interfaces. Built-in learning algorithms adapt to the sites you visit and take any new tracking tools discovered into account. 

While not explicitly an ad blocker, Privacy Badger does also block some advertising, depending on how aggressively the ads track you across websites.

5. Onion Browser (iOS)

iOS users aren’t left out when it comes to browsing the Tor anonymizer network, with the Onion Browser among the more popular options on Apple’s mobile OS. 

Previously a premium app, Onion Browser has since moved to a donation model, opening up access to everyone who wants to download the app, without compromising security or features. The usual caveats apply: Browsing through Tor will slow down the web experience, and some features, like video streams and video files won’t work in order to preserve anonymity.

Don’t download this.

They bait you into getting the app by making it free to bump up the number of downloads and make it to the top of the page; then forcing you to buy a subscription to even use the app. I can see a premium mode that needs a subscription but the whole app? That’s a bit overkill. Also hundreds of fake-looking 5 star reviews. They overuse emojis more than you’re Siberian grandmother who doesn’t know how cellphone work. In other words, they are a bunch of jerks.

Sad to read it. We offer a trial period for all new users to see all the app's abilities. And yep, you need to pay when it's over. But we still offer you some features of our app for free. P.S. Grannies are cool 🧑‍🦳

YouTube on Safari unusable due to dropped frames

Hey all, I'm having a problem with Safari 17.4.1, or actually it's been much, much longer and I'm reaching the end of my tether. YouTube freezes and freezes and I can't do anything else. All the other browsers I've tried (Chrome, Firefox, Orion, Arc, Vivaldi) don't have the problem. I also see under "Statistics for nerds" that Safari loses a really large number of frames, which is not the case with the browsers mentioned above, at least not to the same extent. I'm currently using Orion because it's simply the best browser with WebKit, but I'd like to use Safari because of the better energy usage, but I use a lot of YouTube and that's just not possible. I tried Vinegar (extension) --> no help Reset NVRAM and SMC --> no help Tried the feature flags --> no help (and now reset again) Disabled extensions (Adguard, Noir, PiPifier, Zotero Connect, Reddit Sinkit and 1Password) --> no help; though I'm not using AdGuard on YouTube due to me having YouTube Premium BUT I'm running AdGuard on my Mac (I've bought this as well) and got the DNS filtering activated but Private Relay is off Cache cleared --> no help History deleted --> no help deleted the one entry under "/Library/InternetPlugins" --> no help Is there anything else I can do? My MacBook Pro: 13-inch, 2018, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports 2,7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 1536 MB 16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3 OS Sonoma 14.4.1 (23E224)

You could also try downloading the Safari Tech Preview version. It’s a standalone browser as well so won’t mess up anything on your current Safari.

Okay so I think it does appear in Safe Mode as well. I feel like the picture is stuttering, maybe not as hard as in normal mode, but still stuttering. There are for sure some other strange things im Safe Mode like skipping for example. Anything else I could try?

Okay so I tried again, and still no help. I attached a short screen recording of my problem. This is happening constantly (every 30-60 seconds) and causes about 10-30 framedrops. I'm really unsure, what is causing this. Video is loading or being processed.  

AdGuard v7.17 for Windows: on-the-fly DoH connection filtering

We just rolled out a major release with two important additions, thanks to updated CoreLibs. First up, we enhanced the Encrypted ClientHello feature, which amps up your privacy protection. Plus, we’ve introduced on-the-fly DoH connection filtering for even more security. Let’s dive in and explore.

Enhanced Encrypted ClientHello

AdGuard for Windows supports ECH as an experimental feature. It helps us to encrypt the very last unencrypted bit of information, thus improving your privacy level. We are working hard to resolve some technical issues so that it can become one of the default options for users. The updated CoreLibs is another step towards that goal.

On-the-fly DoH connection filtering

CoreLibs v1.14 also allows us to implement on-the-fly DoH connection filtering. Why is it so important? Previously, if you set up DoH in a browser but not in AdGuard, we had to filter requests directly in the browser and send them to the system DNS (unencrypted). This process lowered the level of security for such users. Now the situation is completely different. With on-the-fly DoH connection filtering, we can filter DNS requests in the browser without sending them to an unencrypted server.

We also made some minor fixes here and there, updated WFP and TDI drivers, as well as DnsLibs.
