The World’s First Underground Cruise Ship Terminal

Positioned as a homeport, Galataport Istanbul is a world-class cruise ship port that is set to vitalize cruise tourism across an extensive region from the Mediterranean basin to the Black Sea. An exemplary project worldwide and a groundbreaking innovation thanks to its special hatch system that enables the terminal to be placed underground, Galataport Istanbul is transforming the Karaköy coastline, which had been closed to public access for a long time, into one of the best promenades in the city.

The hatch system separates the customs and security (ISPS) areas when there is no ship berthed at the port creating a temporary customs area and keeping the promenade open to public.

Modern Design Inspired by Ancient Cisterns

Galataport Istanbul Cruise Ship Terminal has been designed to meet the needs and expectations of every type and class of cruise ship and every segment of passengers. The terminal is set to offer an amazing experience to 25 million visitors, including 7 million foreign tourists and 1.5 million cruise ship passengers. As the entrance and exit point for visitors to the country, the terminal was designed to be as aesthetic as it is functional to leave a profound first impression on passengers.

The terminal follows international standards in all passenger, luggage and passport control services and operations, which are entirely underground. The terminal has been designed by Istanbul-based architecture firm Autoban, whose accurate conceptualization of passenger movements and terminal functions contribute to the visitor experience.

Galataport Istanbul’s design follows a modern approach that reflects the historical value of the port and the cultural tapestry of surrounding districts like Karaköy and Beyoğlu. The project is located in Karaköy, right across and within close proximity of the historical peninsula. Drawing on the cultural heritage of the region, the design concept is based on ancient cisterns, especially those constructed during the reign of Roman and Byzantine empires. Istanbul boasts several, including the Basilica Cistern and the Cistern of Philoxenos, which are key historical landmarks and highly popular tourist attractions.

Rounded columns and the structural shape of the terminal’s interior reflect the architectural quality and character of these ancient cisterns. To create a sense of direction, the terminal also features distinct materials in the directions of the Topkapı Palace and Dolmabahçe Palace, the first and the last administrative centers of the Ottoman Empire.

Port Istanbul cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Istanbul, Turkey, Galataport. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Istanbul is a major port city in Turkey, as well as the country's most populous and its historic, cultural and economic center. The city covers a total area of approx 1539 km2 (594 mi2) and has population around 14,1 million (metro around 14,8 million).

Historically known as Byzantium and Constantinople, Istanbul is a transcontinental city (located in both Europe and Asia) and straddling Bosphorus Strait between Black Sea and Marmara Sea (Eastern Mediterranean). The city's historical and commercial downtown is on the European side, and around 1/3 of its population is on the Asian side. Istanbul Metro is one of the world's most populous cities - ranked 7th-largest (city proper) and Europe's largest - followed by Moscow (Russia) and London (UK) . It also has one of world's fastest-growing metro economies.

Established under the name of Byzantion (around 660 BC), the city developed to become one of the most prominent in European history. After the reestablishment as Constantinople (330 CE), the city served as the imperial capital for nearly 16 centuries. The period included the Roman (330-1204), Byzantine (1261–1453), Latin (1204–1261) and Ottoman (1453–1922) empires. During Roman and Byzantine times, it was Christianity's second most important city (after Rome ), before in 1453 the Ottomans conquered and transformed it into an Islamic stronghold and Ottoman Caliphate's capital.

Istanbul has a strategic position on the Silk Road (rail networks from China to Middle East and Europe) and is also on the only sea route between Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea. Its population has increased tenfold since the 1950s. Music, film, cultural and arts festivals were established at the end of 20th century and continue to be hosted today. Infrastructure improvements and redevelopments have produced a complex transportation network.

Currently, Istanbul is ranked the world's 8th most popular tourist travel destination (as city), while Turkey is ranked the world's 6th (as country). Its biggest attraction is the historic downtown (partially listed as UNESCO Site), as well as entertainment and cultural venues (across the Golden Horn/natural harbor in Beyoglu district). Most tourists arrive via flights, but ~0,5 million foreigners arrive by ships/yachts annualy.

Port Istanbul

Port Istanbul (locode TRIST) as cruise port is both homeport (departure/turnaround) and call port, visited mainly as part of Eastern Mediterranean/Aegean Sea itineraries. Most voyages start in Italy ( Venice ) or Greece ( Piraeus-Athens ).

Some of the world's largest cruise brands with European seasonal programs - like Uniworld (river cruisetours packages combining flights to/from Istanbul), RCI-Royal Caribbean . Princess - were the first to drop Turkish ports (including Istanbul) from their 2016-2017-2018 schedules. These companies were soon followed by Celebrity , Azamara , Cunard , Holland America, P&O UK . All ports of call in Turkey were replaced by Greek Islands port destinations.

In 2015, the cruise port in Karakoy was closed down due to construction works for the new Galataport. The tourists' decline resulted in many street businesses closing down as tradesmen lost nearly 90% of their businesses in comparison to 2015. In 2016, the number of foreign tourists to Turkey decreased by 32% (down to 17,4 million) over 2015. There was a significant decrease in arrivals from Western- and Asian countries and from Russia. On June 6, 2019, Istanbul's Sarayburnu Port welcomed its first cruise vessel in 4 years - Seven Seas Voyager - operated by RSSC-Regent.

Turkey (previously a hugely popular travel and leisure/resort destination) was subject to a number of deadly terrorist attacks in 2016 and 2017. In June 2016, an Istanbul airport attack (shootings and suicide bombings) resulted in 42 deaths. In December 2016, a twin bomb attack outside a football stadium killed 38. There was also a shooting in the Reina nightclub (Ortakoy district of Istanbul) in January 2017 resulting in 39 dead and 69 injured.

In early-November 2018, CCL-Carnival Cruise Lines and RCI-Royal Caribbean International placed bids for the tendering operations of Istanbul's Port Yenikapı. Both companies are interested in building a new cruise port in Istanbul (as build/operate/transfer project) and intend to turn Istanbul into a Mediterranean cruise hub. CCL and RCI are represented here by Tura Tourism (a Turkish sales agency).

The Galataport project was initially scheduled for completion in March 2020. However, due to the Coronavirus crisis, the project was delayed and the cruise port was inaugurated in August 2021. The modern facility was planned for annual capacity ~1,5 million and daily capacity ~15,000 (passengers and crew). The largest cruise companies with booked berthing were RCI, Holland America, Marella UK , RSSC-Regent Seven Seas , Ponant , Silversea , Fred Olsen , Windstar , Celestyal .

Istanbul cruise terminal

Istanbul cruise port terminals are located near Galata Tower. Cruise ships dock at Karaköy Yolcu Salonu passenger terminal (at Beyoglu's southern tip). The terminal is located in Karakoy (Galata), on the waterfront of Bosphorus Strait. This whole area was redeveloped into the new Galataport cruise ship terminal complex.

Istanbul cruise port terminal is right in downtown (in close proximity to major tourist attractions) and approx 20 km / 12 mi (or 25-min) away from Ataturk Airport.

Cruise ships generally arrive in Istanbul and dock at the Salı Pazarı terminal between 8:30-9 AM. After disembarkation, passengers arrive to the shoreline Meclis-i Mebusan boulevard. All the port's ship docking quays are along the shore - starting from Golden Horn's mouth and going northeastward to the districts Findikli and Tophane.

Near the port is the tram station Fındıklı from where you can cross Galata Bridge and go to some of the city's most popular tourist destinations - Sultanahmet (Blue Mosque), Topkapi, Eminonu (Spice Bazaar), Beyazit (Grand Bazaar), Karakoy (Galata Tower), Dolmabahce Palace (5-min walk from the tram's last stop), Taksim Square. Istiklal Avenue (city's most popular street).

From the cruise terminal, Galata Bridge is at 10-min walking distance. At Galata Bridge's northern end (across Golden Horn) is Karakoy - the city’s oldest district. Via an underground cable-car you can go from Karaköy to Tunnel Square, from where an easy walk leads to Istiklal Avenue.

Yolcu Salonu passenger terminal is capable to accommodate 4 cruise ships at a time. If there are more vessels, the dock at Salipazari Pier. The cruise terminal building has 3 halls with combined capacity 10,000 passengers.

Galata Port

Ä°stanbul's new cruise port "Galataport" project originated in 2001 as a redevelopment project that combines functions complementing Turkey's capital city as a center of tourism, commerce and culture. The project covers a land area of 0,1 km2 (0,04 mi2), where the existing buildings (at Karaköy Yolcu Salonu) were renovated - keeping their authentic forms but acquiring new functions.

By this project, the city's customs zone was transformed into a modern tourism complex consisting of an art museum, hotels, restaurants and bars, fast food venues, shopping malls, numerous souvenir shops, office buildings, exhibition areas, car parking facilities.

The following Galataport map shows the Atakoy–Bakırkoy district development project. This district is the city's most populated. The development (started in 2013) planned to provide high-end residential properties, including boat and yacht marinas. The total land area is approx 0,5 km2 (0,2 mi2). It features a well-developed city transportation network - highways, railways, the Atatürk Airport (at just 8 km / 5 mi).

Salı Pazarı cruise terminal was temporarily closed for restoration (2015-2021). The new Galataport cruise terminal was initially scheduled for opening in 2018 but was eventually postponed for August 2021.

In May 2017, to Galataport's masterplan was proposed a new concept combining a movable gangway with underground cruise passenger operations. The idea includes a hydraulic boardwalk deploying a gangway during ship calls only (when a vessel is docked). As space, the hydraulic system takes only 3,5 m of the boardwalk.

Galataport was jointly built by Dogus Group (one of Turkey's largest private-sector holdings) and Bilgili Holding (real-estate developer and tourism investor). With an investment of ~TL 14,07 billion (USD 1,7B / EUR 1,43B), this is one of the world's largest coastal and cruise port projects, with annual capacity ~25 million visitors (including ~7M tourists and ~1,5M cruisers).

  • Galataport Cruise Terminal has berthing capacity of 3x liners (simultaneously docked) and ~15,000 passengers.
  • The first cruise ship docking at Galataport (on September 25-26, 2021/overnight) was MS Eurodam ( HAL-Holland America Line ).
  • Istanbul Galataport's facilities feature an underground cruise terminal (world’s first) sized 29000 m2 / 312155 ft2 which has a unique access/hatch system. During ship days (with docked ships) the cruise terminal converts the port into an esplanade.

Besides being a cruise port, Galataport serves mainly as a leisure destination offering domestic tourists and citizens entertainment and activities themed on gastronomy/modern and traditional Balkan cuisine, shopping, arts, culture, modern tourist attractions and amenities. Galataport also houses a new art museum (Istanbul Modern), Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, MSFAU (Museum of Painting and Sculpture), Tophane Square (Beyoglu district, with the mid-19th-century Tophane Clock Tower). More historical buildings also underwent restorations as part of the Galataport project - including Merkez Han, Karakoy Yolcu Salonu (passenger terminal), Karakoy Cinili Han, Peninsula Istanbul Hotel (2022-inaugurated).

A special feature of the cruise ship terminal is that it is the first in the world to be built  underground .  Furthermore, it uses a unique and innovative hatch system that  creates a temporary security and customs area when no ship is in port.

Galataport Istanbul Guide

The History of Galataport

Construction work on the Galataport project began in 2015 by Turkey's Doğuş Group and Bilgili Holding. The 1.5-billion-euro project that transformed the historical Karaköy harbor into a world-class cruise port is considered one of the largest coastal projects in the world.

Galataport's modern architectural design is inspired by the city's ancient cisterns, which is reflected in the structural shape of the terminal's interior and its rounded columns.

Due to the COVID- 19 pandemic, the opening of Galataport, which was scheduled for mid-2020, was postponed to October 2021. Thanks to the underground terminal, the coastline of Karaköy, which was closed to the public for about 200 years, is now open to the public again.

Istanbul Cruise Port (Galataport) Map

Istanbul Cruise Port (Galataport) Terminal Map

As you can see from the Galataport map , Istanbul Cruise Port is located in one of the most central areas of the city. I created the image by processing Google Maps. Although it is primitive, it will give you an idea about the location of Galataport.

The borders of Galataport start from Karakoy , which is the transportation hub of Beyoglu (southwest part of the blue line). The Galaport complex, which continues along the Tophane district, ends before arriving at the Findikli Tram Station (northeast part of blue line).

The part where the light blue extends in the form of a thin and long line includes Galataport’s seaside buildings and walking track. There are hotels, shopping places and the Istanbul Modern Museum on this long line.

On the other hand, in the main part marked with a square , there is the passenger terminal of the Istanbul Cruise Port. In addition, restaurants and cafes of Galataport are located around the terminal.

You can easily find most of the places to visit around Galataport by looking at this map. In the following lines of the article, you can find a list of tourist attractions located around Istanbul Cruise Port (Galataport).

Things to Do in Galataport 2024

Things to do in Galataport include seeing century-old mosques, visiting art galleries, shopping from famous brands and eating at Istanbul’s most famous restaurants.

1. Istanbul Modern Art Museum

Istanbul Modern Art Museum

Istanbul Modern Art Museum was opened in the early 2000s by transforming an old warehouse by the sea with modern architecture. The most striking work in the museum’s early period was Richard Wentworth ‘s design called False Ceiling.

Although Modern Art has a short history in Turkey, it quickly increased its audience and became popular. IKSV (Cultural Foundation) organized many exhibitions to introduce modern art to Istanbulites.

Later, it was decided to rebuild the museum and place it in the center of the Istanbul Cruise Port. The design of the new museum was created by Italian architect Renzo Piano .

Istanbul Modern has been serving at its temporary location on Mesrutiyet Street for several years. However, when the construction of the new museum inside Galataport is completed, the artifacts will also be transferred here.

2. Painting and Sculpture Museum

Painting and Sculpture Museum in Istanbul

The Painting and Sculpture Museum is affiliated with the Fine Arts Faculty of Mimar Sinan University. The museum has a large collection starting from the last period of the Ottoman Empire to the end of the 20th century (Republican era).

The museum occupies a building designed by award-winning architects. If you look at the Istanbul Cruise Port from afar, you can easily choose this elegant building with contemporary architecture.

3. Ara Guler Photography Exhibition

Ara Guler Photography Exhibition is a small art gallery that you will come across while wandering the streets of Galataport. This painting exhibition inside a cafe features the works of Turkey’s most important photographer.

Ara Guler gained worldwide fame in the 20th century and became one of the Magnum Photographers . Guler immortalized the 50s and 60s of Istanbul with his black and white photographs.

Ara Guler Photography Museum , dedicated to the artist, is located in Sisli, one of today’s modern districts. However, some paintings from his “Istanbul Harbor” collection can be seen in this small gallery.

4. Nusretiye Mosque

Nusretiye Mosque is an ostentatious 18th century structure that you can see when you look towards the square with the sea behind you. The mosque is the most prominent building in Galataport’s square.

Nusretiye has the sharpest baroque lines among the mosques in Istanbul . The reason for this is that it was made by Mahmud II , who made great reforms in the Ottoman Empire and reorganized the army in the Western order.

Mahmud II realized that the Ottoman Empire was far behind the West in terms of technology and military in the 1700s, and he embarked on a major reorganization. The traces of this westernization can be seen in the architecture of the mosque he had built.

5. Tophane Clock Tower

Tophane Clock Tower is one of the first historical monuments to be seen by those arriving by cruise ship in Istanbul. This Ottoman tower from 1905 adorns the square of Galataport today.

The Clock Tower is one of the works in the large square on the land side of Galataport, and there is the Nusretiye Mosque on one side of the tower, and the Kilic Ali Pasha Mosque on the other.

6. Tophane Fountain

Tophane Fountain is one of the most eye-catching public fountains from the Ottoman period. Back then, those who wanted to do charity work would build fountains in the squares.

Tophane Fountain is located on the southwest side of Galataport Square and is adjacent to Tophane Station of Tram T1, the closest public transportation vehicle to cruise passengers.

7. Kilic Ali Pasha Mosque

Kilic Ali Pasha Mosque is located right next to previous Tophane Fountain. The mosque was built for Ali Pasha, one of the admirals in the peak years of the Ottoman Empire. Ali Pasha, who is of Italian origin, received the title of “Kilic” (sword) because of his boldness.

The most distinctive feature of Kilic Ali Pasha Mosque is that it has the most similar interior to a Byzantine church in Ottoman architecture. The reason for this is that the admiral who built the mosque was a fan of Hagia Sophia .

8. Kilic Ali Pasha Hammam

Kilic Ali Pasha Hammam is the closest historical Turkish bath to the Istanbul Cruise Port. You can walk here in just a few minutes from Galataport Cruise Ship Terminal.

Kilic Ali Pasha Hammam has recently undergone a major restoration and is considered one of the best hammams in Istanbul . Taking a Turkish bath here will refresh you after sightseeing.

9. Shopping in Galataport

Galataport was designed as a shopping center as well as being a cruise port in Istanbul. In this way, there are many domestic and foreign luxury brands’ stores for shopping in Galataport .

Galataport has everything an average shopper would need. However, if you still want to experience the other shopping streets of Istanbul, you can try Istiklal Street, which is close to Taksim Square.

10. Restaurants in Galataport

The restaurants in Galataport are like a showcase of Istanbul’s food culture. Istanbul, which has a cosmopolitan structure, is mostly known for its kebab varieties and dessert shops.

In this sense, you can try Gunaydin Restaurant for kebab varieties in Galataport. Sekerci Cafer Erol, Hafiz Mustafa and Balyan, the most famous dessert shops of the city, have branches here.

In addition, you may be interested in Nusr-et, the most famous steakhouse restaurant in Istanbul, or Mezzaluna, a representative of Mediterranean cuisine. Finally, the new generation restaurants Happy Moon’s and Kirpi are also popular.

It is situated right at the entrance of the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn, meaning that it has fantastic access to the city and all of the sights.

As it’s one of the busiest ports in Istanbul, cruise ships can also dock a few kilometers further down at Salipazari Pier, near Dolmabahce Palace.

How Do You Get Around Istanbul From The Cruise Port

As it’s right in the heart of the city, you can easily get around on foot from any Galataport terminal. The trendy Istanbul neighborhoods of Galata, Karakoy, and the famous Tophane clock tower are all just a short stroll away.

The main tourist areas are within walking distance, roughly a 30-minute walk from the Istanbul cruise terminal.

If you don’t want to walk, you can visit the main tourist areas like Sultanahmet, Galata, and Taksim by tram. Take the Bagcilar-Kabatas tram (T1 line) from Tophane Station, or alternatively, you can also travel by public bus.

Istanbul is an easy city to get around with a network of buses, metro lines, trams, and the Marmaray. Route info is available from cruise port information.

Get a public transport card, known as an IstanbulKart, from the kiosks or yellow ticket machines at the station. Transport cards cost 70 Turkish Lira, with individual tram rides costing around 15 Turkish Lira each.

There are lots of tram stations located all along Meclis-i Mebusan Boulevard (opposite the Istanbul New Cruise terminal).

  • Istanbul Public Transport Guide

Head to the Sultanahmet district for its best attractions like the Spice Bazaar, Grand Bazaar, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace. The ride from Istanbul port to Sultanahmet tram stop takes around 10 minutes one way, and the trams run every 5 to 10 minutes.

There are also plenty of taxis available if you don’t want to take public transportation. A taxi to the city center should take around 10 minutes and cost no more than 100 Turkish Lira. Though they are more expensive, they are a good option if you aren’t confident in navigating your own way around the city center.

Some cruise lines may also offer an easy shuttle service to the city center for an additional fee, another convenient option if you want to save time. These are generally more expensive but can be shared with fellow passengers.

How Far Is The Cruise Terminal From Istanbul Airport

The city’s main airport, Istanbul Airport , is located in Arnavutkoy around 45 kilometres away from Istanbul city centre.

Public Transport

The best way to get from Istanbul Cruise Ship Terminal to Istanbul Airport is by public transport by metro. The journey takes about an hour. Take the T1 tram line from Karakoy to Yenikapı Metro Station, then use the M11 line to get to the airport.

There is no direct bus service at this time, though buses can be used, they will take more time.

Taxis in Istanbul

Another option is to take a taxi. Even though it’s only a 40-minute drive north of Istanbul cruise port, it is scheduled for some extra time for traffic as the city can be gridlocked in places.

It’s also best to always agree on a price with the taxi driver or ask them to turn the meter on to ensure you aren’t overcharged. The journey should cost around 250 Turkish Liras.

Private Transfer

It’s also possible to book private transfers in advance if you want complete peace of mind – although this will cost more generally. From my experience, the taxis are reliable and friendly, but if you are not confident talking to someone with a different language, this could be a good option.

Brands we use and trust, is the istanbul cruise port, galataport, worth a visit.

Totally yes!

Opened in August 2021, Galataport is Istanbul’s latest tourist attraction and one of the newest cruise ports in Turkey, where gastronomy and art are proudly showcased to the rest of the world.

The entire Galataport complex takes up around 29,000 square meters, stretching out over the city center’s Karakoy coastline. Within Galataport, there is a port hotel and a lively entertainment district with a variety of shops, cafes, and restaurants.

The port can accommodate around 15,000 visitors a day, so it always feels like a vibrant and busy part of the city. Sightsee, shop, or relax at one of the many third-wave coffee shops while you watch boats pass by along the river.

Where To Eat At Istanbul Galataport

With so many options to choose from, knowing where to eat around Galataport can be a difficult choice.

Turkey Travel Blog_Istanbul Cruise Port Guide_Liman Istanbul Restaurant

A very popular spot is Liman, one of the port’s oldest restaurants. Liman opened its doors in 1947, and it was even once managed by Turkish leader Ataturk’s former chef, so to say it has historical importance is an understatement. White linen tables give the restaurant a classy ambiance, while the mix of Turkish and international dishes means you have plenty of choices when it comes to the menu.

For Japanese-style fine dining with Bosphorus views , Roka is hard to beat. Expect options like beef ginger and sesame dumplings, California maki, crispy fried shrimp, and sushi. The wine list is also huge, and there are some great cocktails to get stuck into.

İBB Cihangir Sosyal Tesisleri

On the other end of the spectrum is the hugely popular İBB Cihangir Sosyal Tesisleri, just across the main street from the port. You may have to wait for a table as the restaurant is extremely popular with locals and tourists alike. Still, the reward is extremely affordable authentic Turkish food with spectacular views over the city and the river.

HOW TO GET TO GALATAPORT

If you’re wondering about transportation to Galataport, this section will come in handy! We’ve compiled the most popular departure points from Istanbul’s city center, and added information on how to reach Galataport.

Galata Tower to Galataport: The easiest way to go from Galata Tower to Galataport is by walking, as it’s a short 15-minute stroll downhill.

Taksim Square to Galataport: You can reach Galataport from Taksim with a 18 minute walk. If you dislike steep hills, you can also take the F1 funicular (Taksim to Kabatas) and walk the flat road from there.

Sultanahmet to Galataport: One option is to take a taxi directly to the Galataport ferry terminal (a 15-minute ride) or take the 25-minute tram ride on the T1 to Tophane station (note that there’s no Galataport tram station or Galataport metro station — it kept the old name!)

You can also check out the map below to learn the exact location of Galataport:

WHAT TO DO IN GALATAPORT

Galataport is a very casual and leisure destination where you can walk along the coast, sip a cup of third-wave coffee while watching the boats glide across the Bosphorus, and then enjoy a stroll through a museum. It’s the perfect place to relax after a long day of sightseeing in Istanbul

Here are some of the best places to visit in Galataport if you’re looking for things to do:

Visit the Istanbul Modern Art Museum

The Istanbul Modern Art Museum (or just Istanbul Modern for short) was established in 2004, and after a lengthy restoration, it reopened in mid-2023 at Galataport!

Istanbul Modern is, without a doubt, one of the top Galataport attractions. The museum covers five floors, with hundreds of works from both Turkish and international artists. The ground floor has a spacious library, cafe, and gift store, while the upper floors contain exhibits and workshops.

If you’re a fan of contemporary art, then we highly recommend a visit to Istanbul Modern!

See Galataport’s Historical Gems

Located just a few steps away from Istanbul Modern is Galataport’s historical landmark, the Tophane Clock Tower . Also known as Nusretiye Clock Tower, this beautiful neoclassical tower was completed in 1848 and is one of the oldest of its kind that still stands in Istanbul.

Right behind the clock tower is another historical attraction in Galataport — the Nusretiye Mosque . This ornate mosque was built in the early 1820s and was the first major work by architect Krikor Balyan (if that name sounds familiar, it’s because the Balyan family built the  Dolmabahçe, Çırağan, and Beylerbeyi palaces!)

Finally, there’s the Kılıç Ali Pasha Mosque , which is located at the far eastern side of Galataport (near Tophane tram station and the start of Karakoy). This landmark is actually a complex made up of a mosque, madrasah, hamam, and fountain. The mosque traces its history back to the late 1500s (really!) and was built by famed architect Mimar Sinan, who was in his 90s (!!) when he worked on the project. Sinan was the same architect who built the Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul’s Old City, Stari Most in Mostar (Bosnia & Herzegovina), and about 300 other works across the Ottoman Empire.

The Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamam is still working to this day, and recently underwent an extensive renovation that aimed to restore the hamam’s original splendor.

Galataport is an excellent example where history and modernity peacefully coexist, don’t you think?

Marvel at 19th & 20th Century Art at the Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture

Boasting more than 10,500 paintings, 700 sculptures, and 500 other works of art, the IMPS is lesser-known than its famous cousin (Istanbul Modern), but just as interesting!

The museum features Turkish paintings and sculptures from the late Ottoman era through modern times, as well as ceramics, calligraphy, icons, and art installations. Of particular interest is an entire gallery dedicated to the works of Osman Hamdi Bey, the founder of Istanbul’s first art school and creator of one of the most famous Turkish paintings (The Tortoise Trainer).

Walk Along the Waterfront Promenade

Finish your trip to Galataport with a lovely stroll along the waterfront promenade, which measures a little over a kilometer and takes about 15 minutes from start to finish.

WHERE TO EAT IN GALATAPORT

There are more than 50 restaurants in Galataport (seriously — we counted), so naturally, you’ll have a lot of choices when you get hungry. From new wave cafes to upscale restaurants, dessert shops, and much more, the restaurants and cafes at Galataport won’t disappoint!

Here is a selection of some of the most popular:

SaltBae Burger — If you’re a fan of the spice-sprinkling and sunglasses-wearing Salt Bae, then you’ll be happy to hear that he opened his signature Nusr-Et restaurant in Galataport. While the food is fairly standard (it has a solid 4 stars on Google), the experience and views are what makes it worthwhile.

The Populist — For some seriously delicious Western food (think burgers, brisket, smoked meats, nachos, and the like), head on over to The Populist. Besides mouth-watering dishes, this restaurant group established Istanbul’s first brewery since 1890! Although new on the scene, the brewery already won the prestigious Meininger’s Award (gold), as well as silver and bronze at the Brussels Beer Challenge. If you can’t decide, they also offer a Sampler Set of 6 glasses. 🙂

Frankie — An upscale restaurant with really nice panoramic views of the Bosphorus. Frankie is especially popular for its cocktail menu. One note: this place opens at 18:00, so it’s better suited if you’re visiting Galataport at night.

Liman — A classic restaurant deeply intertwined with Galataport’s history, Liman opened its doors in 1947 and had the privilege of being managed by Ataturk’s former chef in the 1950s! While the restaurant was recently redecorated, it kept the beautiful Art Deco style of its era, with spacious seating and sweeping views of the bay.

Muutto Anatolian Tapas Bar — A Turkish tapas bar? You bet! The restaurant took the concept of Turkish meze and street food, and beautifully turned it into a fine dining experience. Not sure what to order? The tasting menu is a good start, as it features 5 of the restaurant’s most popular appetizers.

Hafız Mustafa 1864 Galataport — One of Turkey’s most famous dessert shops recently opened up in Galataport, and it’s an absolute treat — both in terms of food and design! The interior is absolutely gorgeous, with stacks of the confectionary’s most famous sweets, while the menu is full of delightful sweets like baklava, ice cream, kadayif, cakes, and much more.

Cafer Erol – Hafiz Mustafa’s competition 😉 Just kidding — Cafer Erol is another popular confectionary shop that specializes in colorful and playful sweets. If you’re visiting during the holidays, be sure to get their winter-themed gift boxes.

Next up is an absolute classic: the Galata Tower! The walk from Galataport to Galata Tower only takes about 15 or 20 minutes, and the area around the tower offers plenty of cafes and cute boutique stores. A 15-minute walk slightly northeast of Galataport is the charming neighborhood of Cihangir , which is famed for its adorable breakfast cafes (and the regular kind too, of course), historical buildings, and a historical hammam. Neighboring Çukurcuma is a paradise for antique lovers, as each corner is full of antique stores that are an absolute treasure trove of bygone eras, with vintage trinkets, weathered books, and delicate curiosities eagerly awaiting their new home.

If you’re visiting Galata Tower or Cihangir, you can continue further north and take a stroll along Istiklal Street , or check out the attractions around Beyoglu .

From Galataport, you can also take a taxi/bus/tram or walk 20 minutes over to the opulent Dolmabahce Palace , which used to be the sultan’s palace but was turned into a museum filled with art, calligraphy, and the royal family’s personal belongings.

Design of the 21st Century Galataport Mall was created with inspiration from ancient cisterns, based on a contemporary approach. It reflects the historical significance of the port as well as the rich cultural tapestry of nearby neighborhoods as Karaköy and Beyoglu.

The architectural idea is based on Roman and Byzantine Cisterns in Istanbul. Main ancient cisterns in Istanbul, such as the Basilica Cistern and the Cistern of Philoxenos, are important historical sites and popular tourist attractions. Cisterns with rounded columns and a structural shape that represents architectural character of the terminal’s interior are a reminder of immense history.

The terminal also includes unique elements pointing in the directions of the Topkapi Palace and the Dolmabahçe Palace to give you an idea of their locations.

Before Entering the Galataport area, the Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque complex welcomes you. Famous architect Mimar Sinan designed and built between 1580 and 1587. He was in his 90’s at that time.

It consists of a mosque, a madrasah, a hamam, a türbe, and a fountain. Originally, it was on the coastline. Over the years the sea in front of it filled. Kapudan-i Derya (Grand Admiral) Kılıç Ali Pasha ordered to build the complex. The 15th. century Hamam is still open. The entrance cost is about 40 USD as of February 2022.

Nusretiye Mosque & Clock Tower

istanbul galataport cruise

The Galataport area begins from the Tophane square. The first monument you see is the Nusretiye Clock tower. Ordered by the Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid I (1823–1861), designed by architect  Garabet Amira Balyan  and completed in 1848.

Baroque style Nusretiye mosque is one of the largest Ottoman mosques outside the historical peninsula of Istanbul. It was built in 1823-1826 with the order of Sultan Mahmut II. by Armenian descent architect Krikor Balyan. Krikor also worked in Beylerbeyi Palace and many other structures in Istanbul.

The mosque is open the whole day and the entrance is free, donations are welcome. If you want to witness a baroque-style mosque, definitely visit the mosque.

After some time around historical buildings, you go back to modern-day Istanbul; where Galataport’s new shopping and dining center welcomes you. As you walk along the edge of Galataport, the wind and sea scent coming from the Bosphorus is enchanting.

istanbul galataport cruise

The Galataport has a lovely walking path; however, it was shorter than I thought. It takes about 10-15 minutes to walk till the end. You can sit down on benches. Relax a bit with the view of Bosphorus, get warm up with the sun.

Where to eat?

istanbul galataport cruise

There are many restaurant options like Nusr’et, Günaydın Steakhouse , Big Chefs. I Haven’t tried any of them. If you want to taste more local Turkish cuisine Fasuli , Black Sea region cuisine restaurant seemed a good choice. If you have kids and want to treat them like they are in a heaven of candies and chocolate; Candy Shop Şekerci Cafer Erol might be for you.

So what did we have? We usually prefer to eat classic Turkish home-cooked meals. 😊 That’s why my group team, (mom and daughter) wanted to have a fast-food. And we completed the day with the best dessert you can get around Galataport, Karaköy, and even probably in Istanbul:

Karaköy Güllüoğlu Baklava (A Sweet Happy Ending)

istanbul galataport cruise

If you ask “Where to eat baklava in Istanbul?”, the majority of people would first say Karaköy Güllüoğlu . It is within walking distance of Galataport. That’s why we went there, to have the best baklava in town. It is always crowded, I have never seen a calm time there. You have to get in the line (Watch the vlog at the beginning of the article) and usually wait to get an empty chair. But still, it’s worth it. On the other hand, I wish it could be more reasonable in price; so it wouldn’t be a luxury to eat there for most locals as well.

istanbul galataport cruise

In conclusion, as a whole family, we had a great time walking through Galataport. Praying at the baroque-style 18th. century mosque, shopping, eating from the best baklava shop in town. The view of the historical peninsula, the Topkapı Palace, and the breezy sea scent was priceless.

istanbul , life in turkey , Created : 17 October 2023

About galataport istanbul, turkey's impressive cruise port, istanbul , life in turkey , by: cameron deggin, by: cameron deggin.

Galataport Istanbul, on the Karakoy coastline of Turkey's biggest city, is undoubtedly one of the world's most impressive cruise ports. History and modernity converge in Istanbul, a city that straddles two continents. Galataport's bustling waterfront development embodies that spirit and perfectly encapsulates Istanbul's dynamism. Galataport is also right on the Golden Horn's shores and close to other districts like Beyoğlu, making this area part of Istanbul's vibrant urban fabric. With a strong maritime heritage, the district has always excelled in seafaring routes. Still, Galataport really put it on the map for cruise ship travel. The cruise port also boosted the lifestyle trends of locals and the values of nearby properties. Let's look more in-depth at how Galataport changed the face of Karakoy.

Galataport

About Galataport Istanbul - World Class Cruise Port

Karakoy, istanbul: where history meets contemporary charm.

Before we talk about why Galataport, which covers 1.2 kilometres of shore, is a vital part of European Istanbul, it is worth knowing about the district. Karaköy's history is intertwined with that of Istanbul itself. During Byzantine times, this area was a bustling port known as Galata and a hub for trade and maritime activities, where ships worldwide would dock, offloading exotic goods. Over time, Karakoy transformed into a thriving commercial district under various ruling powers, from the Byzantines to the Ottomans.

Karakoy played a crucial role in Istanbul's commercial life as the centuries passed, with bustling bazaars, warehouses, and trading posts. The area was also home to several ethnic communities, contributing to the cosmopolitan character. Karaköy's location on the Golden Horn made the city's transportation network strategic.

Vision of Galataport Istanbul

Despite Karakoy's rich history, the district faced challenges as the city's infrastructure and urban development evolved. Historical buildings and neighbourhoods had become increasingly crowded and had not kept pace with contemporary needs. Galataport Istanbul was envisioned as the answer, a large-scale urban redevelopment project combining old with new. This was labelled a world-class cruise port that could accommodate the largest cruise ships.

The Galataport project, initiated by the Turkish government and developers, created a dynamic, mixed-use waterfront destination. The master plan of coastal projects involved carefully preserving the area's historical character and introducing modern elements to enhance the appeal. Designers sought to create an environment where visitors could experience Istanbul's history, culture, and commerce in one cohesive space. The hatch system also makes the port the world's first underground cruise ship terminal.

Galataport Cruise Port: The cruise port is at the centre of the Galataport coastal project. Designed to accommodate large cruise ships, this ultramodern facility allows visitors to quickly disembark and explore Istanbul. Galataport Cruise Port is not just a point of arrival but a destination in itself. With office spaces, shopping options, and dining choices like Cafer Erol, visitors explore Istanbul as soon as they step ashore. The architecture and facilities of the transformative project offer both functionality and aesthetic appeal, creating a sense of grandeur.

Galataport Promenade: Here, visitors take leisurely waterfront strolls, viewing the Bosphorus, Golden Horn, and Istanbul's skyline. The promenade hosts events, exhibitions, and festivals celebrating Istanbul's culture and heritage. This is where people can dine in trendy restaurants and enjoy many shops or relax while enjoying the unique atmospheres of the Galataport.

Galataport Cultural Center: The Galataport Cultural Center, a focal point for arts and culture in Istanbul, is crucial in connecting visitors with Istanbul's artistic and historical legacy. The centre hosts exhibitions, performances, workshops, and events that showcase the city's rich cultural heritage. The centre also bridges the past and present, hosting events like classical music concerts and modern art exhibitions.

Istanbul Modern Art: Istanbul Modern, officially known as Istanbul Museum of Modern Art (Istanbul Modern Sanat Müzesi in Turkish), is a prominent contemporary art museum. Istanbul Modern Art Museum's collections feature contemporary art, including paintings, sculptures, photography, video installations, and more.

Galataport Istanbul

Social and Economic Impact

The Galataport project significantly impacted the local and national economy. Thanks to its status as a world-class cruise port, by revitalising the area and creating a new tourist and commercial destination, the transformative project generated economic growth and job opportunities. Galataport Istanbul incorporated several eco-friendly features into the design in a world increasingly concerned with sustainability.

The cruise port also boosted the tourism industry in Istanbul, making the city more accessible for travellers worldwide. The project spurred interest in preserving and restoring historic buildings throughout the Galata and Karakoy districts. In the face of rapid urbanisation, such projects are vital in maintaining the historical character of Istanbul. Naturally, as with anywhere in the world that undergoes significant transformation, Galataport made Karakoy a property hotspot, with owners instantly seeing a rise in property values.

How Galataport impacted Property Prices

Galata Port significantly impact property prices in the vicinity. The area had always been a property hotspot. Still, as the project was announced, investors came flocking, and homeowners were delighted. The impact of a port on property prices can be complex and multifaceted, and it depends on various factors, including the type of port, operations, and the broader economic and urban development context. Galataport ticked all the boxes.

Properties near a port, especially with a waterfront view, tend to have higher property prices. Waterfront properties often have a premium due to their scenic views and potential for recreation. This is already true of all properties along the Bosphorus and Golden Horn in Istanbul.

However, Galataport was also a significant economic driver, creating jobs and fostering economic activity in the surrounding area. As a result, demand for housing and commercial properties increased, leading to higher property prices. In addition, Galataport is well-connected to transportation networks. This accessibility makes surrounding areas more desirable for both residential and commercial purposes.

Although Karakoy was already an influential area, Galataport brought gentrification with it. Gentrification often results in an influx of more affluent residents, increasing property prices as demand for higher-end housing and amenities grows. Lastly, Galataport is a mixed-use development with residential, commercial, and recreational spaces. This only increased the desirability. (More about investing in Istanbul- Turkey.)

How to Get to Galataport in Istanbul

Getting to Galataport is relatively straightforward, with several transportation options depending on your starting point within Istanbul. Use the T1 tram line, which runs along the European side of Istanbul and connects significant attractions and neighbourhoods. Alternatively, use the F1 funicular line.

If coming from a location related to the metro, take the M2 metro line and get off at Şişhane Station. Then, walk to Galataport (about 20-30 minutes) or take a taxi or tram ride to reach your destination. If this is your first leg, or you are departing your cruise ship, the new Istanbul airport is roughly a 40-minute drive from Galataport. However, you should allow for traffic time.

Cruise Terminal Procedures

Cruise ships arrive at the SaliPazari terminal around 9 AM. Once cruise passengers disembark and pass through the customs office, they can walk along the Meclis-i Mebusan boulevard by the shoreline. The port has several ship docking quays along the shore, starting from the mouth of the Golden Horn and going north-eastward towards Findikli and Tophane districts. Yolcu Salonu passenger terminal can accommodate up to 4 cruise ships at a time. If there are more vessels, they will dock at the Salipazari Pier. The 3 halls of the cruise terminal building can handle up to 10,000 passengers.

About the Neighbouring Galata District

So, now it is time to explore the neighbouring attractions that add to the lure of Galataport. Sitting right next door is the Galata neighbourhood. The name derives from the ancient Greek word "Galatia," referring to Celtic settlers who once inhabited the region. Over the centuries, Galata evolved into a vital commercial and cultural hub for the city, serving as a significant port and connecting Istanbul to the world.

During the Ottoman era, Galata maintained importance for trading and finances, with various ethnic communities coexisting. Greek, Jewish, and Armenian communities enriched the area's cosmopolitan atmosphere. One iconic symbol of Galata's historical legacy is the Galata Bridge , a leisurely 10-minute walk away. Spanning the Golden Horn, this bridge has undergone several iterations since the 19th century. The bridge connects Galata to Eminonu and offers an ever-changing view of bustling waters and fishermen casting their lines.

The 14th-century Genoese Galata Tower called Christea Turris (Tower of Christ) during the Byzantine period, stood tall for centuries and is one of Istanbul's biggest tourist attractions. The tower's design is a harmonious blend of form and function, combining defensive elements with aesthetic beauty. One enchanting aspect is the breathtaking panoramic views. From the observation deck at the top, visitors gaze upon Istanbul's picturesque skyline, which includes the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus, and mosque minarets. The awe-inspiring view is particularly spectacular at sunset when the city's lights begin to twinkle.

Galataport to the Grand Bazaar

Travelling to the Grand Bazaar is a straightforward journey. The most convenient and direct option is a taxi or a ride-sharing app like Uber or BiTaksi. The Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) is a well-known destination. The journey should take approximately 15-20 minutes, depending on traffic. Another option is the tram. Walk to the nearby Karaköy tram station. Then, catch a tram on the T1 line heading towards the "Bağcılar" direction.

Get off at the "Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı" tram stop, which is right in front of the Grand Bazaar. The journey should take 20-30 minutes, depending on waiting times and tram schedules. If you enjoy walking and want to soak in the atmosphere of Istanbul, also walk from Galataport. The two destinations are not far apart, 40 minutes, depending on your pace. Galataport to Istiklal Avenue and Beyoglu

Beyoğlu stands out as a bustling, dynamic, and historic area. At its core, you'll find İstiklal Avenue, a lively and culturally rich promenade leading to Taksim Square, the epicentre of Istanbul's modern life. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Beyoğlu flourished as Istanbul's cultural and entertainment hub. Embassies, theatres, and European-style cafes increased, and the district attracted artists, writers, and intellectuals. This cosmopolitan legacy is still palpable as you stroll through the streets today to see the significant landmarks. The buildings along İstiklal Avenue are architectural marvels representing European, Levantine, and Ottoman styles. Their ornate facades and charming balconies are a visual feast. The street's iconic red tram also slowly weaves through the crowds of people.

Although there are many shops, Istiklal Street is a cultural treasure trove. The Pera Museum, houses European paintings and Turkish art. Numerous galleries, boutique shops, cultural centres, and art studios line the avenue, offering contemporary and traditional expressions. Taksim Square's history is also rich and layered. The square was a water distribution point in Ottoman times, thanks to the Valide Sultan Mosque. This prominent area for military parades also symbolised modernisation and political change.

Taksim Square features the Republic Monument, a powerful symbol of Turkey's transition from an empire to a republic. The monument, designed by the Italian sculptor Pietro Canonica, commemorates the founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. İstiklal Avenue's side streets are also packed with cosy cafes and restaurants serving everything from traditional Turkish kebabs to gourmet fusion dishes. Lastly, expect a shopper's paradise and a great place to pick up souvenirs.

Visit Dolmabahce Palace in Neighbouring Besiktas

Sitting in the neighbouring Besiktas district , Dolmabahce Palace, nestled gracefully on the European shoreline of the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul, represents Ottoman luxury and the elegance of neoclassical architecture. The major landmark of 19th-century Ottoman design spans over 13 acres and exudes grandeur from every angle. The central structure boasts an impressive dome and the Dolmabahce clock tower, further enhancing the regal presence.

As one enters the palace, the interior is equally breathtaking, featuring lavishly decorated chambers, sumptuous crystal chandeliers, and intricate parquet floors, all testifying to a bygone era of royal splendour. Perched along the Bosphorus shores, Dolmabahce Palace reflects the extravagant lifestyles of Ottoman sultans while affording panoramic views of the waterway's bustling activity.

Dolmabahce Palace

Sultanahmet Square Attractions - A Day of Sightseeing

In the old city part, Sultanahmet Square , a time capsule of centuries of civilisation and iconic landmarks, is Istanbul's biggest tourist attraction. Catch the Bagcilar-Kabatas tram (T1 line) on the old city centre side to get from Galata port to major historical attractions of the Sultanahmet district. Taxis are the most expensive way but ideal for more time to explore and less hassle of traffic.

Sultanahmet, once called Byzantium and later Constantinople, was the centre of the Eastern Roman Empire, Byzantium. The district bears the indelible mark of the Byzantine era, with structures like the Hagia Sophia, the Hippodrome, and the Theodosian Walls that date back to this period. The old city part is also a prominent UNESCO World Heritage site.

Sultanahmet witnessed another chapter in history with the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453. The Ottoman Empire ushered in the construction of grand mosques, palaces, and public squares that define the district's character today. The Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and the Grand Bazaar are enduring testaments to Ottoman opulence.

Hagia Sophia , built as a cathedral in 537, became an imperial mosque in the 15 th century and a museum in the 20 th century. In 2020, the building was once again reconverted into a mosque. The 17 th -century Blue Mosque , officially called Sultan Ahmed Mosque, is another architectural gem in Sultanahmet.

Topkapi Palace, a sprawling complex of courtyards, chambers, and gardens, was the primary residence of Ottoman sultans for nearly 400 years. The opulent halls and serene courtyards portray the grandeur of Ottoman court life. In contrast, the Harem section describes the sultans' private lives. The palace also offers breathtaking Bosphorus views.

The Basilica Cistern , called Yerebatan Sarnıcı, is a 6 th -century underground water reservoir. This hollow space features rows of columns and is famously called the "Sunken Palace." The Hippodrome, an ancient stadium once used for chariot races and sporting events, is now a public square. The Serpent Column, the Obelisk of Theodosius, and the Column of Constantine are historical monuments that still grace this space, carrying echoes of Byzantine times.

One enchanting aspect of Sultanahmet is simply wandering through streets and alleys for religious and spiritual exploration. Attend prayers at the Blue Mosque or explore the Hagia Sophia's intricate religious art. Sultanahmet's timeless charm makes this area essential to experience vibrant Istanbul, where echoes of empires continue to thrive.

A New Megaproject in Istanbul Features an Underground Cruise Ship Port

By Richard Morgan

The next big idea in urbanism may be right under architects’ noses, as demonstrated by a just-completed urban renewal in Istanbul.

On paper, Galataport has many of the features of everyday megaprojects: 400,000 square meters of construction, 250 retail units, enough parking for 2,400 vehicles, a 177-room Peninsula hotel, a Renzo Piano –designed museum, a Salt Bae restaurant, and 1.2 kilometers of new coastline that renovated a section of town inaccessible to the public for 200 years—all bundled in a $1.7 billion price tag. On paper, it’s Turkish Canary Wharf or Hudson Yards or whatever other Pudongulous eyesore. But the reality is that Galataport has transcended megaproject design by embracing an about-face on pomp. It’s the world’s first underground cruise ship port, projecting 15,000 passengers a day and 25 million annual visitors.

As ships dock, patches of sidewalk lift 90 degrees to reveal ramps that descend into customs and passport control (the raised sidewalks double as security barriers).

“We tried to find a system to open up the view,” said Figen Ayan, Galataport’s chief port officer. “We thought of building down like a parking lot because, really, what do you do in a terminal building? You handle luggage. You board buses. Customs. It’s not really fancy or sexy. So, do they logistically need something extravagant? No. This can be done underground.” She called the project “not just an expansion of our city, but also an expansion of our knowledge.”

There were plenty of engineering challenges, said  Galataport Executive Board Member Erdem Tavas: “We didn’t build it beside the sea. We built it in the sea. It was lots of engineering innovation.” He flagged that such construction sidestepped archaeological concerns in the historic port town that was the terrestrial endpoint for the ancient Spice Road and has been the capital of two of the world’s most influential empires. “There’s no Atlantis there,” he joked.

But in a city with so much history, Galataport is “a project that will last for hundreds of years,” said Ali Pusat, the assistant general manager who oversaw construction. He noted that sea level rise over the past 100 years had been 30 to 35 centimeters, but that Galataport was built to withstand three meters of sea level rise. And all buildings use seawater as a coolant, for greater sustainability.

James Ramsey, the New York–based boutique architect to the megarich through RAAD Studio, recently took a tour of Galataport, drawn by the interest he developed for underground ventures during his proposed Lowline , the world’s first underground park.

“In submerging the edifice they’ve subverted the paradigm. It’s a clever, practical consideration that is respectful of the urban fabric,” he said. “Every infrastructure project I’ve ever seen like this is a monumental gateway. That kind of monumentalism is something embraced once upon a time—definitely with midcentury modernism or early 20th-century modernism—but approaching it from a broader viewpoint or context makes for a more sensitive urban intervention. Galataport is an evolved level of urbanism. People should open their eyes to a broader range of thinking about what’s possible in doing things that are traditionally only ever done in one fashion.”

He continued: “What are your priorities when you develop something like that in a place like that? The edifice or the city? They took this tear in the urban fabric and knitted it back together: continuing the axes of the city, being sensitive to the height of buildings and human-scale rhythm of design. You can have your pride take a back seat to the sensitivity of how you’re treating the city. Istanbul itself is the jewel here, a palimpsest of millennia. It’s the star, not whatever glass thing dreamt up by a starchitect. Galataport doesn’t have some individual landmark or hub. It’s an egoless design.”

In the Lowline’s heyday, Ramsey was approached to pursue similar projects in London, Moscow, Paris, and Seoul. He said major port cities like Miami, Rotterdam, Shanghai, and Singapore would do well to consider Galataport’s example.

Galataport didn’t just renovate its old post office building into a “fashion galleria:” it painstakingly restored each individual slate tile on the roof — all 25,000 of them. Another Galataport surprise is a fully restored 1848 clock tower that had been buried for decades. Its centrality in a plaza is Galataport’s boldest design strategy: that if ports can be submerged, so can 21st-century vanity. If you must know, the master plan was designed by Dror + Gensler; the façade designers and creative consultants were Tanju Özelgin and Arif Özden of TO Studio, BEA Architects developed the underground cruise terminal design and transportation circulation plans, the cruise terminal’s interior was designed by Autoban, and the architect of record was Norm Architecture.
