In Japan, you'll find an explosion of culture in every season, from the iconic pink cherry blossoms that line Kyoto's Philosopher's Path in the spring to the powerful temples and beach barbecues that shine in Okinawa in the summer. In autumn, head up Kobe's Mt. Rokko for a view of fiery orange-yellow treetops, and in winter, soak in the natural onsen of Beppu, Arima or Niigata. WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Mind Your Manners

Japan is a unique, eclectic country with distinct customs and an adventurous landscape ideal for travel. Politeness is a way of life in Japan. To avoid insulting the locals, always make sure you take off your shoes when you go inside a house or Japanese-style establishment. Eating sushi with your hands, however, is fully allowed — in fact, it's considered rather sophisticated. The weather varies quite a bit in Japan depending on the season. Wear loose, breathable clothing in July when summer is at its hottest and most humid. From December to March, warm clothing is recommended, as you can expect snow in all but the most southern parts of Japan.

Haggling or tipping is not observed in Japan and will be met with confusion, so it's best not to try.

Most Japanese don't speak English, so make sure you carry a phrase book with you as you explore.

The public transport in Japan is incredible. You can take a train almost everywhere in the country.

CUISINE Sushi for days

Japan is synonymous with culinary excellence, and its cuisine is all about whole ingredients and locally sourced food, served as fresh as possible. From gleaming gems of sushi to steaming hot bowls of soba to specially cared-for wagyu cows, you won't be disappointed.

Japanese Noodles with Fried Shrimp

you'll want it soba-d

Soba noodles are made from buckwheat and are often brought to life from scratch by the shop owner. In summer, experience cold soba noodles with a small bowl of dipping sauce, or slurp up hot broth and tempura prawn in the cold winter months.

Japanese Blowfish Plate

control your tempura!

Looking to add some thrill to your dinner? Japan's chefs have mastered preparing poisonous blowfish in a safe and delicious way. Although the best blowfish is found in Shimonoseki, it's prepared by expert chefs all over Japan. With a subtle flavor and firm texture, you'll be hooked to its dangerous taste!

Japan Osaka Street Food

hit the streets

When you're exploring the city streets of Tokyo, be sure to grab some top-notch street food. Feast on takoyaki, fried balls of dough flavored with dashi stock and stuffed with fresh octopus, or okonomiyaki, a savory pancake made with flour, cabbage, vegetables, your choice of seafood or pork and topped with a savory condiment that includes ketchup, Worcestershire and oyster sauce.

Haven't been to Japan before and only have a limited time? You need to get around this tour. We were fortunate enough to have the legendary Dale who provided the group with insightful knowledge and sharing his passion with the country. The itinerary was well thought out with each spot visited at the best possible times plus the food recommendations and included meals were on point. Even tough this was a hostel tour, the accomodation was great and travelling as a couple we were well accomodated. Thanks Dale and one life adventures for giving us a trip to remember. We'll be back for another!

This tour has been an incredible experience, amazingly organised, packed itinerary but absolutely worth the travel, our tour leader Zoe is awesome and went out of her way to make this the best experience, from helping me source the best vegan food at each destination to ensuring smooth travel and optional evenings out as a group to recommendations for our free time. Would 100% recommend INTRO if you're thinking of heading to Japan!

10 Days Splendid Japan with Nagoya (3 star hotels)

Stunning Tours provided us with great local drivers and a tour guide who was very informative and friendly, and hotel accommodations in great locations each unique in its own way. The accommodations were very comfortable and either convenient to the particular location or offered amenities worth being a little distance away. They tailored the itinerary to our individual desires and needs. Best trip we've ever had!

It as good having the flexibility to either take Tsunao's suggestions or go your own way. Tokyo, Nikko and Kyoto are all great places to explore and Tsunao's knowledge was invaluable. The venues chosen for group meals were varied and interesting. It was unfortunate that we struck heavy rain in Nikko which meant we were unable to do some of the suggested activities. Highlights there were the Kanmangafuchi Abyss, Ryuzu and Kenyon waterfalls and the Yasukawachu shrines and temple. Kyoto has so many highlights with it's long history especially in the era in which it was Japan's capital. The seasonal highlight was a fireworks display in a town outside the city. My personal favorites were the Fushimi Inari Shrine together with the climb up through the 10000 gates, Nijo Castle and the 2 large temples just north of Kyoto station.

9 Days Stunning Japan with Shirakawa-go (3 star hotels)

Super nice staff and had a lot of fun on the trip. Extremely satisfied. There were a ton of items on our itinerary and we actually were able to see them all. The first half of the tour was packed with amazing temples, shrines, and shopping. This was our first trip to Japan and this company was well organized, making the tour process very painless. I was very happy with my experience and would recommend them to anyone who wants to enjoy Japan.

Essential Japan Tour

Essential Japan

I recently booked the 7day Essential tour to Japan. Want to commend 3 tour guides that accompanied my group in those 7 days. First guide MINJI Japanese born but spoke perfect spanish ,english and of course Japenese. She was with us the inicial 6days of the tour. What a fun, knowledgeable, patient, fun, entertaining guide she was. To make our long bus rides less boring, she had us learn to write our name in Japanese , another we had a japanese vocabulary lesson, and last we got to make an origami swan. She was AWESOME. Next David I believe he is from Spain he was with us 1day. Full of energy, humor and music. Last KIKO from Argentina sweet and very patient and helpful. The tour itself was well planned. Loved all the hotels we stayed at. Breakfast was good. All hotels were conviently located across from the train stations except in Osaka. Tours were great wish we had a little more time..but it was really crowded with tourist at most of the places we visited...so understandable. Favorite places for me Mt Fuji,Asakusa, Inari Shrines,Bamboo Forest, Nara. Again it was great thanks Europamundo y TourRadar

We had an amazing holiday. Japan was all we had hoped for. The group worked so well, we all got on and became good friends. Shingo, our guide was totally great. He was so pleasant and helpful. His English not brilliant but he did a great job. We felt maybe a little more information on places and sights might have been good. He was constantly helping us all and looking after us. He made great suggestions for meals and always checked up on us all, even when we split into smaller groups for the evening. He went way beyond what he could have done and made everyone feel safe and well looked after. He even helped booking all our onward travel and ensured we were all ok on the day. Wonderful man!! The hotels were nice, if a little small with almost no storage in most of them! Breakfasts were generally very good. We saw and did so much. In fact, we felt sometimes it was a little too much to fit into each day, and either missed some things out or were too rushed, missing stopping and looking at leisure at things and shops etc. Shingo was so patient, even when we caused him to run a little late! Due to distances covered we spent a lot of time travelling which was an interesting experience. Just meant time at destinations was a little short. As Most of us were older we all felt very tired at the end of each day and struggled especially when we had to carry back packs whilst waiting to be reunited with luggage. Dont know what the answer is, if extra days added, then expense goes up. If itinerary cut back, then Interesting sights missed out! Overall, a truly great trip. We enjoyed it all!

Japan One Life Adventures - 14 Days

I had a lot of fun on this tour! They give you time in each location to roam around at your own pace and make sure to carve out appropriate time for all the big attractions. Logistics were well-handled and most of the itinerary was great. The accommodations are decent for the price, although some temples are very poorly insulated, so in the winter it can get awfully cold even with the heater on. One thing they don't really say is just how much walking this is - for Americans, it was between 4 and 8 miles most days, or 20-30k steps per day, often including stairs while carrying your luggage. We packed lightly (no checked luggage) so it was doable, just be prepared. There are opportunities to do laundry, but often the dryers aren't the best, so pack things that'll dry quickly. Sarah was an AMAZING tour guide, she really earned this rating. I would have loved more time with her because she was so fun to talk to and so knowledgeable about the culture and places we visited. She was great at managing expectations, too, so we never felt disappointed or like we got unlucky (particularly with Mt Fuji and the cherry blossoms).

What people love about japan tours.

My sister, daughter, and I joined this trip as a special belated birthday present for my daughter, and we had a blast. This was truly an adventure—a 10-day backpacking tour through Japan— that left us with memories to hold dear for years to come. Our trip included three days in Tokyo, a day in Hakone, a day in Takayama, an enriching three-day stay in Kyoto, and a culminating day in Osaka. Travel Insights: Be prepared for an active itinerary filled with walking, climbing, and hiking. We navigated through the cities and destinations using public transportation, including trains, metros, buses, and plenty of walking. Although it was physically demanding at times, this approach was highly rewarding. It allowed us to learn how to navigate the city, providing us with a sense of independence when we successfully found our way around during our "free" time. Accommodation: The lodging experience was a mix, predominantly in hostels. Noteworthy stays included a night in a traditional Japanese guest house and another in a temple. The accommodations were fairly clean. I did travel with my own wash cloth and shower slippers as these are typically not provided. Events and Exploration: This is where the tour truly shines. The itinerary was thoughtfully designed to include a wide range of experiences, from educational and cultural insights to adventurous escapades. Each activity was crafted to deepen our understanding of Japan and its multifaceted culture, allowing us to engage with the local traditions, history, and natural beauty in meaningful ways. Whether it was participating in a tea ceremony, exploring ancient temples, or venturing through vibrant city streets, the tour was packed with exceptional moments that showcased the best of what Japan has to offer. Hayley was our tour guide and she was phenomenal! She was very informed and ensured the group was always safe and accounted for. She ensured we were always on time but also accommodated personal time to rest. Her knowledge and passion for Japan made the experience even more enriching, guiding us through each city with expertise and care. Not to mention Hayley is a badass at Karaoke. :) A few tips: Pack Light: Every accommodation we stayed at provided laundry facilities or services. Opting to pack light can greatly ease your mobility throughout the trip. Souvenir Space: Japan is rich with unique treasures. Ensure you allocate space in your luggage for the souvenirs you'll undoubtedly want to bring home. Portable Wifi: It's highly recommended to reserve a portable wifi device or eSIM prior to your trip, which you can pick up upon arrival at the airport. This will ensure you stay connected seamlessly throughout your journey. Portable Power Bank: Always carry a portable power bank. It's essential for keeping your devices charged on long days of exploration
The guide was the best
Japan was so fun! A looooooot of free time so do you researches about what to do and visit in every city. Would have love more ''organised'' activities (like a dinner every night with the group,...). Compared to other G Adventures tour I did in the past, I felt that this group was less stick together since there was only a few group activities.

With its intriguing combination of traditional and modern architecture, ancient history and popular culture, Japan has become one of the most sought-after cruise destinations in Asia—not least because so much of the island-nation, with its long coastline, is accessible by water.

International cruise lines finally returned to Japan in March 2023 after a three-year hiatus due to COVID-19 border closures . The result has been pent-up demand for Japan cruises, and cruise lines have responded by introducing a wide variety of sailings in Japan for this year and next. You can cruise Japan on a smaller, more intimate yacht, an expedition vessel, an ultra-luxury ship, or a large cruise ship with more than 2,000 passengers.

Regardless of which ship you choose, the best Japan cruises feature itineraries that include neon-and-skyscraper cities, tranquil shrines and temples, beautiful parks and gardens, and hot springs and snow-capped peaks, including Mount Fiji. Depending on the time of year you choose to sail, you can enjoy springtime’s cherry blossoms or the crimson leaves of fall. Cruise passengers will also get to experience a wealth of cultural encounters, from local food and customs to colorful arts and entertainment.

For those who are as excited as we are about the return to Japan, here are our picks for the best Japan cruises.

Abercrombie & Kent

Best for viewing cherry blossoms or fall foliage

If your goal is seeing Japan’s famous cherry blossoms, luxury tour operator Abercrombie & Kent has chartered a Ponant ship for the height of the season, from March 27 to April 9, 2024. A similar fall sailing will show off Japan’s fall foliage. The cruise is on the Le Soleil , capped at 199 passengers. With its expedition team and local guides, A&K is focusing on cultural experiences such as private performances by the world-renowned Kodo taiko drummers, Kabuki warriors, and geishas as well as time spent in scenic Japanese gardens. In Hiroshima, passengers will meet a storyteller who will discuss the World War II atomic bomb attack. Onboard lectures and presentations will be led by specialists in Japanese history and culture.

Abercrombie & Kent’s 13-night Wonders of Japan cruise from Osaka to Sapporo starts at $21,485 per person (includes two nights at the Ritz-Carlton Osaka).

Celebrity Cruises

Best for families

The 2,138-passenger Celebrity Millennium , complete with an alfresco movie theater and a supervised Camp at Sea program with more than 500 activities, is the perfect option for families; it will cruise in Japan from May to early October 2024. The line’s Best of Japan sailings embark from Yokohama, near Tokyo. After exploring the vibrant capital city, key ports will include Kobe (known for gourmet marbled beef) and Hiroshima, as well as lesser-known gems (on select itineraries) such as the hot springs of Hakodate on the island of Hokkaido. All sailings include an overnight stay in Osaka, with time to head to the celebrated temples, shrines, and overall beauty of Kyoto (one hour away)—or passengers can stay in Osaka and visit the world’s largest aquarium and Universal Studios Japan.

Celebrity’s 12-night Best of Japan cruises start at $1,799 per person.

A wood-paneled communal bath onboard Guntû with ocean views

Take a dip in the communal bath on the sleek 38-passenger Guntû .

Best for local immersion

For something different, try a destination-immersive luxury floating hotel on Japan’s island-rich Seto Inland Sea with a local company. An artisan-built ship called Guntû does three- to five-day itineraries. Carrying only 38 passengers, it’s designed by the Japanese architect Yasushi Horibe to resemble a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn. The decor is minimalist and modern, with lots of wood and glass details. For a splurge, some of the suites come with their own open-air tranquil onsen baths. When you are not off exploring remote villages, dine on cuisine envisioned by a renowned Tokyo chef Kenzo Sato from Shigeyoshi, indulge in seafood-rich creations at the sushi bar, sip craft cocktails, and participate in tea ceremonies. In the spa, there’s a communal bath, where you can join other guests while taking in water views.

Three-night sailings with Guntû from Hiroshima start at $4,127 per person.

Lindblad's National Geographic Resolution

Lindblad Expeditions

Best for a mix of culture and nature

Lindblad Expeditions is exploring Japan with a couple of new itineraries in August and September 2023 and again in September 2024. The 16-night Coastal Japan: Imperial Dynasties and Modern Culture route (which includes two hotel nights in Tokyo) sails between Niigata and Kobe and will focus on both cultural attractions, such as temples and art studios, and natural wonders, including on Japan’s subtropical islands. A 15-day Sailing the East China Sea: Japan, Okinawa, and Taiwan itinerary includes the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. The ship is the 138-passenger National Geographic Resolution , with attractions that include a NatGeo-certified photographer onboard to help you capture Japan’s beautiful scenery with aplomb.

Lindblad’s 16-night Coastal Japan sailing starts at $24,650 per person, and the 15-night East China Sea itinerary starts at $20,050 per person.

Boats sailing around Ishigaki Island in Iriomote Ishigaki National Park with turquoise waters and a white-sand beach

Enjoy the turquoise-blue waters of the islands that make up Japan’s Iriomote Ishigaki National Park.

Best for getting off the beaten cruise path

Upscale French line Ponant explores Japan with its 184-passenger Le Jacques-Cartier and is doing some of the most innovative cruise itineraries currently available in Japan—in an expedition style, with naturalists leading landings in inflatable Zodiacs. The area of exploration is the subtropical southern islands with a focus on the Okinawa archipelago and the Yaeyama Islands in the Ryukyu Archipelago, and the lush Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Seven-night itineraries in March and April 2024 include time on pristine beaches on islands such as Ishigaki and Kume, as well as snorkeling excursions and diving opportunities. Out of the water, you’ll visit traditional villages for cultural experiences such as drum and dance performances.

Ponant’s seven-night sailing between Keelung, Taiwan, and Kagoshima starts at $6,470 per person.

Fares include shore excursions, such as indulging in hot springs on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu; exploring Kagoshima, known as the “Naples of the East” for its caldera bay and volcano; and learning porcelain traditions in Sasebo. Among other stops, guests will also visit Kyoto and Shimizu, for views of Mount Fuji.

Regent Seven Seas’ 11-night Japan cruises start at $15,199 per person, with business-class airfare included.

Windstar Cruises

Best for cuisine

Windstar Cruises , the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation—and with dishes from prestigious chefs featured on the ships’ menus—is exploring Japan in September and October 2023 with its 312-passenger, all-suite Star Breeze . A 10-night Grand Japan sailing between Yokohama and Osaka affords deeper exploration of smaller ports, including in the Seto Inland Sea (larger ships can only get so deep into the island region). From Kagoshima, Windstar passengers will visit the lunar landscapes and lava fields of Sakurajima Island and from Shingu, the mountain-perched Kamikura-jinja Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Join a pre/post cruise tour for a fulfilling trip to Japan by both land and sea. Listed below are some of the most popular ports of Japan with shore excursion ideas. Akita: A vibrant city noted for its thriving art and museum scene, as well as producing some of the country’s best sake. Home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Shirakami-Sanchi mountain range. Points of interest include Lake Tazawa, the Kakunodate Samurai District, the Akita City Folklore Museum, and the Mt. Kanpuzan Observatory. Steamy, therapeutic waters and spas encompass this legendary town, surrounded by stunning mountain peaks and lush foliage. Points of interests are Jigokumeguri, Yufuin Onsen, Mt. Takasaki Monkey Park, and the Usa Jingu Shrine. Hakodate: A long-established producer for Japan’s finest raw fish, it was the first port in Japan to open to Westerners in 1859. Visitors can still view the town’s cobblestone streets and Western-style, early 20th century homes. Excursion suggestions include Mt. Hakodate, the Morning Market, Goryokaku Pentagonal Fort, Onuma Quasi-National Park, and the Red Brick Warehouses. Hiroshima: Site of one of the infamous atomic bombings during WWII, a monument city and home to a National Treasure. Visitors can spend time at the city’s Peace Memorial Park, or its serene Miyajima Island, one of Japan’s three most scenic sites. Points of interest are the Hiroshina Peace Memorial Park, Atomic Bomb Dome, Itsukushima Shrine, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkein Garden. Kagoshima: Best known for its active volcano, Mt. Sakurajima, which has erupted 30 times in its recorded history. Kagoshima also holds rich Japanese history during the feudal era. It is located at the top of a peninsula which features unique, geothermal sand baths. Excursion suggestions include Chiran, Ibusuki, Sakura Jima, Lake Ikeda, and Senganen (Iso Garden). Kanazawa: Most popular for being the location of one of Japan’s three most beautiful gardens, the Kenrokuen Garden. The city also holds a rich arts & crafts scene and well-preserved samurai and geisha residences. It remains one of the most important cities of its prefecture. Recommended shore excursions are the Kenrokuen Garden, Higashichaya Machi, 21st Century Museum, Shirakawago & Gokayama, and Nagamachi Samurai House Row. Kobe: A cosmopolitan port city and gateway to the cultural center of Kyoto. It is the origin of the famed Kobe beef and is considered one of Japan’s most attractive cities. Kobe was hit by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995, but has since been rebuilt with few signs of the tragic event. Port excursion ideas are Arima Onsen, Mt. Rokko, Sake Brewery Museum, Kitano, and Shin-Kobe Ropeway. Kushiro: A major fishing port overlooking the Pacific Ocean in northern Japan. This coastal city offers a variety of restaurants, boutiques, and plenty of natural scenery. It is the most populous city in eastern Hokkaido. Points of interest include the Crane Nature Park, Washo Fish Market, Cape Aikappu, the Kushiro Marshland, and Hokuto Observatory. Maizuru: One of the main port cities of the Kyoto Prefecture. It was once an important port during the Russo-Japanese War, and today it serves as a center for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Maizuru is also known for its rich nature and scenic locations. Sightseeing spots include the Fukuoka Castle and Amanohashidate Kasamatsu Park. Other attractions are located nearby in Kyoto, such as the Golden Pavilion and Ryoanji Temple. Miyazaki: Located on the south-eastern side of the Kyushu Island, Miyazaki is known for having one of the warmest climates of Japan’s main islands. It is home to various resorts and beaches, making it a beautiful destination for outdoor activities and sightseeing. Points of interest include the Obi Castle Ruins, Aoshima Island, Shochu Brewery, and Udo Shrine. Nagasaki: To many travelers, Nagasaki is known as the location for the second nuclear bomb attack during WWII. For this reason, visitors from all over the world come to visit the Nagasaki Peace Park to commemorate this tragic event. On a lighter note, Nagasaki offers stunning views and is often nicknamed the “San Francisco of Japan”. Points of interest are the Glover Garden, Oura Catholic Church, Gunkanjima, Mount Inasa, and Dejima. Okinawa: Japan’s southernmost prefecture, an island chain with subtropical climates. Okinawa is for having some of the world’s most beautiful coral reefs, large number of marine life, and spectacular snorkeling/scuba diving spots. Its three main islands are Okinawa Island, Miyako Island, and the Yaeyama Islands. Shore excursion ideas include Shurijo Castle, Okinawa Prefecture Peace Memorial Museum & Peace Park, Shikinaen Gardens, and Churaumi Aquarium. Osaka: The second largest metropolis of Japan after Tokyo. It was once the capital city of Japan and has greatly shaped Japan’s society with its cultural influences. Visitors will find many historical monuments, nightlife attractions, and more. Excursion ideas include the Osaka Castle, Universal Studios, Minami (Namba), Shitennoji Temple, and Museum of History. Otaru: A small nostalgic canal town that once served as a major trading and fishing port in Hokkaido. It is known for its beautifully preserved buildings that have been converted from warehouses to boutiques and restaurants. Many visitors are drawn to its historical architecture and pleasant scenery. Top attractions are the Otaru Canal, Nikka Whisky Distillery, Otaru Snow Light Path, Herring Mansion, and Sakaimachi Street. Shimizu: Famous for being one of Japan’s most scenic ports. Located in the Shizuoka area, the port is rooted in Edo Period history and importance. Shimizu is also known for its outstanding views of Mt. Fuji on clear days. Shore excursions are S-Pulse Dream Plaza, Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, Sunpu Castle Park, Shizuoka Sengen Shrine, and Miho no Matsubara. Tokushima: Located on the Shikoku Island, best known for its annual Awa Odori dance festival. This prefecture abounds with natural wonders, surrounded by its beloved Mt. Bizan, as well the remote Iya Valley and its vine bridges. Tokushima is a go-to area for outdoor adventures. Points of interest include the Ryozen-ji Temple, Naruto Whirlpools, Otsuka Museum of Art, Tairyu-ji Temple, and Mt. Bizan. Tokyo (Yokohama): Located at the center of Tokyo Bay, the port of Yokohama welcomes numerous cruise ships and offers an array of attractions. Shopping and tourist destinations are a short walk away, and easy transportation access to the greater Tokyo area is also available. Top attractions include the Sankeien Garden, Minato Mirai, Tokyo Tower, Sensoji Temple, and Imperial Palace.

Custom Group Tour - Japanese Design: Study Tour

5/29/2023 - 6/9/2023 / 2023-05-29

I hired All Japan Tours to organize the art tour which I curated. We worked on it for two years as this was a complicated trip with a lot of different locations, strict schedule, private viewing, and everything had to be on the highest level of hotels and food. The job that Kiyoshi and his team have done is exceptional. It was so well organized that everything was on time. They are flexible, detail oriented, and lovely to work with.

If you want one of the best tours of your life go with All Japan Tours and ask for Miss Kim. We went for our honeymoon and Miss Kim made it unforgettable. We experienced more than we could have imagined and she was exceptionally helpful and informative. Japan is the most beautiful place we have seen in our lives, and when we got home we missed both the country and Miss Kim. Thank you for all that you have done. We hope to come back again! You really made our honeymoon memorable.

The guide and bus driver were exceptional.

Everything about the tour was amazing! Our guide Miharu was a very big part of making the tour so fantastic. Her knowledge, guidance, assistance, storytelling, friendliness -- I can go on and on, and especially her humor and comedic skills had us all laughing and wanting more. She never failed to have an answer to our questions. Driver Harada-san was also so accommodating and pleasant to have as our driver -- he had the softest hands! I loved all the "hand on" activities - doing bonsai, woodcarving, making kamaboko, making tatami, dancing. It was also so special that Miharu was able to have the beautiful Japanese singer fly in just to entertain us on the bus. That was so special and I'm sure something that is not done for all tours.

Ms. Kawaguchi

Our tour was carefully curated to meet the diverse interests of our group. We had a group of family and friends, many who have traveled to Japan together several times before with a different company. AJT was by far superior in the sites and experiences they provided. The local tour guide was informative and funny and took the extra steps to make sure our tour would be memorable. We will definitely use AJT for our next trip. Thank you

Japan Tour Selection Trips

  • There are a few main attractions that are seasonal, so planning around on of these might be a good way to help build your trip. The cherry blossom viewings can be from late March through April; climbing Mount Fuji is best in the summer months; and Sapporo Ice Festival and skiing is prime for January/February.
  • On a clear day, you can see Mount Fuji from the top of the Tokyo Tower, so plan to go on a clear day.
  • Japan has many traditions, such as taking off your shoes in certain places, and especially when visiting temples, so be sure to be respectful and even do some research or ask your hotel concierge what you should know before going.
  • Be sure to stay in a ryokan (traditional Japanese-style inn) at least one night. It really fulfills the Japanese experience with the tatami mat flooring, rice-paper sliding doors, and sleeping on futons.

Additional details

Japan is a fascinating country - with something for everyone. It is popular among history buffs eager to learn about the ancient samurai culture, foodies who love sampling unique culinary items, and outdoorsy travelers looking to ski in some of the most pristine mountains in the world.

The Japanese culture is complex but friendly - their customs are important to them; politeness and timeliness are heavily valued traits. Traveling with a tour can help ease some of the stress that might come with navigating the Japanese culture and language.

When is the cherry blossom season in Japan?

Cherry blossom season in Japan is in early April on the mainland. This is one of the most popular times of year to travel to Japan, with hundreds of thousands of people visiting to see the bright pink and red cherry blossoms.

The season is relatively short, especially if you stay in the major towns and cities. And locals as well get very exciting about seeing the cherry blossoms - a flower commonly depicted in Japanese imagery throughout the centuries. So definitely expect some unavoidable crowds if you plan to visit Japan for the cherry blossom season.

Is Japan Expensive?

How much does it cost to take a tour of Japan? Is Japan more expensive than other Asian countries or Europe? While, yes, a vacation in Japan isn’t cheap, it is not prohibitively expensive, either. And what’s more, the experiences and memories you make on your Japan tour are undoubtedly worth every penny you have saved.

There are countless ways to save money during your guided tour of Japan, from living off curry bowls and sushi train restaurants, to using public transportation. To ensure lower airfare and tour prices overall, look for trips during the off season, from November to March and during the summer months, from June to September. March to May and September to November will always be the most expensive.

For the most economies of scale, travel to Japan with a tour operator. They’re expert in the destination and have all the right connections to ensure the best value for accommodations, transportation, sightseeing fees, food and more. Plus, they’ll have your back in an unfamiliar country, where the language and customs are very different from home.

Your tour operator will be key in parsing out just what you want to see, based on your interests, whether that’s city or countryside, and doing it in an educated, value-added way based on their years of experience. Consider mixing and matching your trip to include both small-group travel in Japan with some independent travel once you’ve gotten your legs under you.

Be flexible about planning your Japan tour and you’ll find that the pieces will fall into place in terms of budget. There are enough choices about accommodations, activities and transportation to run the gamut from shoestring budget to top-end luxury. One thing remains constant: A trip to Japan is completely worth it.

Weather in Japan

When should you travel to Japan for the best weather? There is something appealing about all of Japan’s four seasons, so this answer depends on just what you’re hoping to do during your Japan guided tour.

In general, for the most mild weather conditions, spring and autumn are the best time to visit Japan, though summer and winter have their benefits as well.

Let’s start with the two most popular times to visit Japan : spring and summer. Springtime in Japan is considered March through May, when it’s warm, but not too hot. There is very little rain at this time. The plum trees start flowering early, followed by the famous cherry blossoms.

Cherry blossom season extends into April and includes Golden Week at the end of the month, a period of four national holidays within one week. If your escorted Japan tour will include Golden Week, we suggest making your reservations well ahead of time, as this is one of Japan's busiest holiday seasons.

October and November are the best autumn months to visit Japan, past the oppressive heat of the summer and the typhoon season along the coasts of Okinawa, Kyushu and Shikoku. The flowering trees of summer have given way to equally impressive autumn shades in the north and at higher elevations.

Don’t shy away from traveling to Japan in the winter, between December and February . The country transforms into a magical snow-covered wonderland, with world-class skiing opportunities, snow festivals and delightful hot springs soaks. It’s not as cold in Okinawa as in other regions of Japan, so if you prefer the mild side of cold, center your tour there.

Winter in Japan includes the busy travel season of New Year’s , which can be very popular and thus requires advance planning. Opt, instead, for February when the tourist crowds are smaller. February is a great month for snow sports in Japan, when Northern Japan and the Sea of Japan coast receive a lot of snow.

Look for winter tours that include seeing the drift ice off Hokkaido and the snow-covered houses and trees of Shirakawago. Keep in mind that the days are relatively short during the winter months and where there is not pretty snowfall, the landscape is fairly barren.

Finally, the least popular time to visit Japan is in the summer, from June to August , when heavy rainfalls are practically guaranteed. The temperatures and the humidity is sky-high. If you are traveling to Japan in the summer, we suggest looking for tours that include the northern region of Hokkaido or the mountains of Tohoku or Chubu. Hokkaido is less affected by the rainfall, so it remains a popular outdoor activity destination throughout the summer.

Where to Ski in Japan

There are several ski resort destinations in Japan, covering a wide range of “traditional” ski lodges to resorts to smaller mom and pops.

There are two main regions for skiing in Japan, both of which hosted the Winter Olympics. Hokkaido, which hosted in 1972 offers a more “westernized” feel” when it comes to the ski resorts and ski culture.

The other main region for skiing in Japan is Nagano, which hosted the winter olympics in 1998. Here you can expect a more traditional Japanese approach in the ski villages and lodges - many accommodations are offered in Japanese inns called “ ryokans” . This would be the place to go to an Onsen for the truly unique experience of bathing in a warm outdoor pool as the snow falls.

When is the Ski Season in Japan?

Skiers around the world get very excited about skiing in Japan for the powdery snow. The best month for Japan’s renowned powder conditions is January. Expect pretty heavy crowds of enthusiastic skiers eager to experience some of best powder skiing in the world.

The Japanese ski season is shorter than in the United States, plan to visit between December and late February / early march for the best snow.

Choosing a Tour in Japan

With so many great options out there in the Japan small-group tour arena, you may be asking, “How do I pick the best Japan tour for me?” Consider these questions as you do your research:

What do I want to get from my Japan experience?

Get in touch with your inner explorer and determine what is most important to you. Cherry blossoms? Hiking? Skiing? Shrines and temples? Shopping and food? Then look for small-group guided Japan tours with these filters to see what best matches your interests.

How many days do I want to travel in Japan?

To maximize your experience and get the most out of your trip, we suggest a 10- to 14-day Japan guided tour. If you have a full two weeks, you’ll have time to adjust to the time zone, explore the greater Tokyo area and then branch out from there to different landscapes and historical and cultural centers.

How are you traveling?

Are you looking for a completely guided, escorted tour of Japan or would you like to have some independent travel days in your itinerary? With a country with a significant language barrier, such as Japan, it can be beneficial to travel with a small group.

The professional and expert planning and support throughout the trip will save you time and money and help you get the most from your time in the country. Your Japan guide will know the best times to visit attractions to avoid large crowds, can help with the language, knows how to navigate transportation and has insight to share about the local culture and traditions.

Of course, if you are interested in doing the research and planning much of the trip yourself, there are excellent tour operators that work in this way, providing a backbone for your Japan trip, and being there as behind-the-scenes support in case you need it.

Travel with the experts for a carefully curated, value-packed discovery of the world's most iconic destinations. Our tours are bursting with must-see sights, rich experiences and quality inclusions, all at an unbeatable price. Bucket list dreams are ticked off on these all-encompassing journeys.

Day 1 Tokyo

Upon arrival into Tokyo, please make your own way to the starting point hotel.

Take the evening to relax after your flight and prepare for your first full day of touring tomorrow.

The easiest and most convenient way to travel from Haneda International Airport (HND) to Tokyo Central is by train or by monorail. The airport is also serviced by many 'Limousine Bus' services which offer shared shuttle bus service from around ¥1300 per person.

The best way to travel from Narita International Airport (NRT) to Tokyo Central is by the Narita Airport Express. The journey to most Tokyo stations takes approximately 1hr and the ticket costs ¥4070. The airport is also serviced by many 'Limousine Bus' services which offer shared shuttle buses from around ¥1300 per person.

Hotel Check-in:

Travellers will be arriving at various times throughout the day. If arriving prior to standard check-in time, which is generally 3pm local time, you are welcome to leave your luggage with hotel reception and explore your surroundings until check-in becomes available, as there are no scheduled activities on day 1 of the itinerary. The hotel may grant early check-in, however this is strictly subject to availability and at the hotel’s discretion.

Day 2 Tokyo

Our exploration of Tokyo begins with a visit to Asakusa Sensoji Temple – the oldest temple in Tokyo – famous for its huge hanging lantern at the Kaminarimon Gate (Thunder Gate). Then, we’ll explore the outer grounds of the Imperial Palace, the primary residence of the Emperor of Japan. Previously home to samurai warriors, it’s a sprawling complex with beautiful 17th century parks in the heart of the city. Built on the site of the old Edo Castle, it is surrounded by a large park, moats and massive stone walls. Come cherry blossom season, it is blanketed in a sea of pink blooms.

There is arguably no better place in Tokyo to have a fresh sushi breakfast or lunch than at the Tsukiji Outer Market. At the market, you can find processed and fresh seafood, along with culinary-related items such as specialty knives.

No trip to Tokyo is complete with a visit to the famous Shibuya Crossing – the famed icon of the district alongside the Hachiko statue.

Day 3 Tokyo Nikko Tokyo

We’ll leave Tokyo this morning after breakfast and head north to Nikko, one of Japan’s most famous mountain towns.

We’ll visit the Nikko Toshogu Shrine. Enclosed in dense forest and hailed as Japan’s most lavish shrine, it’s the final resting place of shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. Most of the shrine complex was rebuilt in the 17th century and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.

Whilst in Nikko, we visit Kinu-Tateiwa Otsuribashi and Oya History Museum, which is a museum built inside a former stone quarry. The caverns are from the Edo Period to mine Oya Stone, a soft but durable volcanic stone.

Day 4 Tokyo Yokohama Mount Fuji

Leaving Tokyo this morning we head to the national park region of Hakone. On the way we explore the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse, a building complex that was erected a century ago as a customs house for Yokohama Port. Requisitioned by the US military after World War II, the buildings were repurposed as a cultural centre and shopping complex in 2002.

Enjoy a boat trip across the serene Ashinoko Lake, followed by taking a cable car up the mountains to the sulphur vents of Owakudani. You’ll have spectacular views, and on a clear day, you can catch a glimpse of nearby Mount Fuji.

Day 5 Mount Fuji Nagano

We’ll head to Kawaguchiko today, about a two-hour drive. Lake Kawaguchiko is the most accessible of the Fuji Five Lakes; popular sightseeing spots each offering an astonishing view of dramatic, iconic Mount Fuji. This is a great place to get back to nature.

Here we’ll visit Mountt Fuji 5th station to hopefully view the divine mountain before visiting Oishi Park on the north side of the lake. If you’re here in spring, seeing the cherry blossoms with Japan’s most famous mountain in the background really is an experience. This lake is also home to a cherry blossom festival held during the season, one of the most popular in the country. There are about 300 cherry trees on the northern shore, stretching for about a kilometre.

You’ll see the lakeside trail along the eastern shore of the lake that boasts many weeping cherry trees. There will be time for lunch.

Continue onto Nagano for the night, home of the 1998 Winter Olympics.

Day 6 Nagano Takayama

After breakfast, we will head to Hokusai Museum to discover the great artworks of Katsuhika Hokusai (1760-1849), one of Japan's leading Edo period ukiyo-e painters.

We’ll drive to the traditional city of Takayama today, still home to many Edo-period buildings.

For a taste of authentic, old Japan, we’ll enjoy a tour of Takayama old town, nestled in the Hida mountains. This city still retains a traditional feel, especially in its beautifully preserved old town (Sanmachi Suji). Here you’ll find quaint, old latticed wooden buildings and Sannomachi Street, with pretty homes, restaurants and sake breweries. We’ll see the Takayama Jin’ya, the former government headquarters under the Tokugawa Shogunate from 1692-1871.

Day 7 Takayama Shirakawa-gō Kanazawa

After breakfast we’ll travel to Shirakawa-gō Village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has more than 100 'Gassho-style' houses, which feature steeply-pitched roofs. Built many hundreds of years ago, these historic houses stand together in a beautiful natural setting. From the site’s observation deck you can enjoy a panoramic view of this unique village, its thatched-roof houses sitting among gorgeous mountain scenery.

Day 8 Kanazawa

Today we will explore the castle town of Kanazawa. First up is a visit to Omicho Market, where you can try some local favourites, such as fresh seafood and gold leaf ice cream.

Next, we visit Kenrokuen Garden. This is one of Japan's three best landscape gardens, and is considered the most beautiful of them all.

Finish up your day by taking a stroll down the streets of Higashi Chaya, a geisha district in Kanazawa known for its quaint old buildings and teahouses.

Day 9 Kanazawa Kyoto

Echizen Washi Village is located in the Imadate area, it is steeped in paper-washi making history dating back 1500 years. ‘Washi’ is a traditional Japanese paper.

There are over 60 paper mills in Echizen which you will be able to walk around and visit whilst here.

After your visit, we will continue to Kyoto.

Day 10 Kyoto

Today we’ll visit some of Kyoto’s most iconic sites, like the Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion). This is a Zen temple and UNESCO World Heritage Site, with two floors covered entirely in thin layers of pure gold, set within a beautiful classical Zen garden.

Afterwards, we continue to the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove for an enchanting walk through the towering bamboo forest.

This afternoon is spent at your leisure – perhaps selecting one of the optional activities on offer in Kyoto.

Learn the secrets of  Sado, the Japanese tea ceremony, from a qualified tea instructor.

Tea Ceremony The Japanese tea ceremony (known as sado or chado in Japanese) is a Japanese tradition that has become an art form.  More than just about preparing and drinking tea, it is a formal way for a guest to enjoy a host's hospitality, far removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Itinerary Today enjoy your tea ceremony experience in the heart of Kyoto. Make your own way to the venue and enjoy this unique traditional Japanese experience.

The Japanese tea ceremony is a traditional ritual influenced by the principles of Zen Buddhism in which powdered green tea, or matcha, is prepared and served by a host in a quiet setting.

Enjoy tasting traditional Japanese confectionary with your green tea.

Start time: approx 3:00pm.

  • Traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony
  • Qualified tea instructor
  • Taste Japanese traditional confectionary
  • Transportation to the activity is not included and must be self-arranged
  • Personal expenses and anything not stated

Kimonos are a traditional Japanese garment that were first introduced in Japan in the Heian period. You will be able to rent a Kimono and walk around the traditional streets of Kyoto to take iconic photos. Your guide will be able to provide you with directions to the venue.

Start time: approx 2:00pm.  Duration: 45mins to 1 hour

Day 11 Kyoto Nara Osaka

After breakfast we’ll leave for a day tour of some of Japan’s icons before continuing onto historic Nara, ancient capital of Japan.

Our first stop in Kyoto is Fushimi Inari Taisha, one of the most iconic sights in Japan with its thousands of red Shinto shrine gates. We spend time here strolling through the gates and visiting the various shrines and temples.

No trip to Japan is complete without sampling the local tipple – sake. An expert will take you through the distilling process, flavours, styles and history of the beverage, before you will be able to sample some for yourself.

Next, we’ll visit Todaiji Temple, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan and home to the country’s largest Buddha statue. We’ll then see Kasuga Shrine, featuring over 3000 stone and bronze lanterns.

Our last stop is at Nara Park, one of the oldest parks in Japan, to see over one thousand tame deer roaming freely in this vast, tranquil space.

The day will conclude, overnighting in Osaka.

Day 12 Osaka

Today is all about visiting one of Japan’s most famous landmarks, Osaka Castle.

Built in 1583 as a centre of a new, unified Japan, Osaka Castle is a wonderfully preserved example of Japanese architecture. We then continue to our centrally-located hotel in Osaka for a night at leisure.

You may wish to head out to experience the famous Osaka nightlife in the Dōtonbori area – one of the city's most popular tourist destinations, Dōtonbori Street runs parallel to the eponymous canal. It’s a popular shopping and entertainment district and an area famed for its street food and plentiful restaurants. At night the streets here are illuminated by hundreds of colourful neon lights and mechanised signs, including the famous running Glico Man sign and the Kani Doraku crab sign.

Day 13 Osaka

Today is spent at your leisure.

There are two optional activities which you can participate in, otherwise, feel free to pick your Tour Leader’s brain for some alternative ideas around/in the city:

Wander through the flashy, glittering, famed district of Dotonbori and sample famous Osaka treats like kushi-katsu and takoyaki octopus balls; plus find out why Osaka is considered the heart and soul of the Kansai region. Start time: 5pm Finishing time: approx 8.30pm (This tour cannot operate on the same day as Hiroshima Day Tour. Day 15 Beppu Kunisaki Beppu

After breakfast, you will be met by your local guide for a guided day tour of Kunisaki. Visit Usa Jingu, a famous Shinto shrine dedicated to Hachiman, the god of war. Then, visit Fukiji, a beautiful temple with a unique thatched roof and serene surroundings. Next, Maki Odo, another temple, is known for its ancient stone Buddha statues and historic architecture. Visit Kumano Magaibutsu, a Buddhist temple with large carvings of Buddha and other deities set into the rock face. Finally, visit Futagoji, a temple with stunning views over the surrounding countryside. Return to Beppu in the afternoon for time at leisure.

Important Information

Fitness Requirements While the tour itinerary should give you some guidance and overview to the expected requirements, to determine if this tour is right for you we categorise each of our tours in terms of their intensity. These guidelines are to ensure that each tour group is conducted as expected and to ensure the overall satisfaction of all Inspiring Vacations customers.

As a general rule, porterage is not included, therefore at all times you are expected to handle your own luggage where help may not be available.

This particular tour is categorised as a”3”

Moderate Tour : A good level of fitness and mobility is required, as this tour includes a moderate level of physical activity and is considered a medium-fast paced tour. You should be able to walk up and down stairs, get on and off the coach and able to walk reasonable distances of approximately 2 kilometres per day or more with ease. Any physical ailments you may have must be disclosed at the time of booking to determine your suitability. If you have any form of walking aids, other than a walking stick or hiking poles, then this tour is not suitable.

Tipping A friendly reminder that tipping is not included in your package. While tipping is not customary, it's of great significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels, inspires excellent service, and is an entrenched feature of the tourism industry across many destinations. You may also consider tipping your tour leader and driver for outstanding service throughout your trip. Suggested amount for your guide, 500Y per person per day. Remember, a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.

Accommodation The accommodation listed is subject to change. Any changes will be of an equal or higher standard. Bedding configurations (double or twin) are requests only. All efforts will be made to meet your preferences, however, any changes are beyond our control.

Twin Share Bedding Configuration At any time, bedding configuration is subject to confirmation by the hotel and based on availability. While you have the option to select either twin or double bedding at time of booking, our recommendation when travelling to Japan is to choose twin bedding, as the rooms are often bigger than those that have a double bed. If insisting on double bedding, please note that the rooms will be smaller and more narrow. As a general expectation, we cannot always guarantee bedding at all hotel stays.

Single Supplement Single supplement is $1,533.00 per person, in addition to the twin-share price.

Please note when choosing Single Supplement for this deal that you will receive a single room, which is smaller in size than a twin/double room. Unfortunately this is typical for Japan, as the cost to solely occupy a double/twin size room is incredibly high. We appreciate your understanding.

Triple Share Not available.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Japan; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact a consulate or embassy of Japan to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.

You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

IMPORTANT: An overnight bag for your stay at the Tobira Onsen on Day 5 should be packed including all essential clothing and personal care items as the balance of the luggage will be transported by luggage truck and there will be no access to the remainder of your luggage. A small bag with wheels that you can comfortably manage on your own without assistance is strongly suggested.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally,   no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Japan. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking  here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally , please contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries on the itinerary to determine what vaccinations may be required for you to visit.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

To enjoy this active tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.  We recommend that you pack sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in to appreciate fully what Japan has to offer.

Some sites have limited motor coach access and often involve walking some distance from the motor coach parking to the site itself. Due to the ancient nature of several of the sites you will visit, stairs, walkways and garden paths are sometimes uneven, irregular, steep and/or slippery. If you join us for the visit to the fish market, you should be aware that there are crowds of people and fast-moving carts and forklifts. Quite often, you will be asked to remove your shoes to gain entry into the temples, shrines and historical residences along your journey.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

The weather throughout the Japan's four main islands is generally temperate, with four distinct seasons. The weather can get very hot during the summer months, particularly in the South. May, June and July are the wettest months, and June, July and August are hotter and more humid.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website,  noaa.gov , by clicking  here .

What To Pack

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.  We recommend that you pack lightly for your trip to Japan, as there is very little room for luggage aboard the trains and you will pack an overnight bag for Day 5. The balance of your luggage will be transported by luggage truck and there will be no access to the remainder of your luggage for those two nights. A small bag with wheels that you can comfortably manage on your own without assistance is strongly suggested.

We recommend that you dress smartly. Jeans and capri pants are suitable for casual dining and sightseeing. However, shorts are rarely seen outside of hiking or sport venues, unless they are longer-length Bermuda shorts. Most women wear cropped length pants and they do not, as a rule, wear t-shirts.

Most wear a conservative top that may be sleeveless but is not low-cut, and many Japanese women wear heels even with casual clothes.

Shoes that are easily removed are essential, as it is customary to remove shoes when entering temples, shrines, private homes and certain restaurants. Clean socks and hosiery are also required to avoid unnecessary embarrassment.

Japan's top French restaurants usually require jackets and ties. The older generation considers it inappropriate for women to wear dresses without hose or tops without sleeves.

Bring packets of pocket-sized tissue and handkerchiefs, as tissue and paper towels are often not found in lavatories.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your journey to Japan:

  • Cotton, cotton/synthetic and linen clothing
  • Light weight shirts, pants, capri pants and dresses
  • Light jacket or sweater
  • Jacket and tie and casually-elegant attire for fine dining
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Shoes that are easy to slip on and off when visiting places of worship
  • White socks (for temple visits where you need to remove your shoes)
  • Hat (a wide brimmed hat is recommended)
  • Collapsible umbrella
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Soap leaves, travel packets of tissues, handkerchiefs and hand sanitizer (toilet tissue and paper towels are not available in many lavatories)
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions (many hotel rooms do not have clocks)
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Please refer to the Necessary Gear website at  www.necessarygear.com  as one option available to you for renting and purchasing apparel, PPEs, and other items appropriate for your journey.

Russia’s upgraded cruise missiles travel a shorter distance than their predecessors — but pack twice the punch.

Russia’s latest air-launched cruise missiles may travel less than half the distance of their predecessors, but they pack twice the punch.

The upgraded Kh-101 nuclear-capable cruise missile — first added to Russia’s arsenal in 1995 — boasts tandem warheads, set to detonate simultaneously, according to Ukraine’s Pravda .

The updated technology was discovered after a missile downed by Ukrainian forces Friday was analyzed, Ukraine’s Defense Express reported.

The stealthy missile is designed to fly low to the ground, undermining air defense systems.

Two homes stand surrounded by rubble from destroyed residential buildings in the Ukrainian city of Kamianske.

The original Kh-101 weighed over 880 pounds, and was capable of hitting targets 3,400 miles away. To accommodate the addition of a second warhead, Russian engineers decreased the missile’s fuel tank size, cutting its range to 1,400 miles.

With two warheads, one of which is a fragmentation warhead, the Kh-101 now weighs more than 1,700 pounds.

While capable of destroying anti-aircraft missiles, the warhead, according to the Defense Express, also has the potential to cause devastation on the ground, resulting in human casualties.

The reports suggest Russia first started working on the missile upgrade in 2010.

Seventeen fans celebrate encore tour with cruise party, fireworks

A cruise party held on Friday night at the Han River to celebrate boy band Seventeen's ″'Follow' Again to Incheon″ concerts held over the weekend [HYBE]

And Seventeen said, let there be fireworks. Boy band Seventeen’s fandom Carat became one as they sang, danced and jumped along to the group’s music during a cruise party held to celebrate Seventeen’s encore world tour, “'Follow’ Again to Incheon,” that took place over the weekend.

Friday’s cruise began at 7 p.m. at the Ara Gimpo Passenger Terminal and slowly progressed through the western reach of the Han River carrying some 550 Seventeen fans who came together to enjoy two hours of a DJ party, food and drinks topped off with fireworks on the top deck.

While some fans danced enthusiastically to DJ Jin Rico’s remix of Seventeen’s hit songs, which was put together by Seventeen’s famed producer Bumzu, some took to the back of the hall to put on their very own dance performances. Other fans bonded over food and drinks as they shared their favorite moments of the band and their excitement for the weekend’s concert.

Though HYBE, the K-pop powerhouse that owns Seventeen's agency Pledis Entertainment and more, did not provide a demographic breakdown, Friday’s cruise was visibly filled with fans of all nationalities, mostly women. Announcements were also made in Korean, English, Chinese and Japanese.

“We came to Korea for the Saturday concert, but this cruise is so much better than what we expected,” 24-year-old Susan from China told the Korea JoongAng Daily in slow but clear Korean, which she said she learned solely by watching K-pop idol videos.

Susan was joined by her other friends Hatty and Melody, who also flew from China for the Seventeen concert.

“I’ve been a Carat since 2019 but I’ve liked K-pop for more than 10 years now,” Susan said. “I run a blog in China making videos about Seventeen and sharing their news in China because I want everyone to know just how great they are. Their sincerity, love for music and chemistry with each other are just so enticing, you can’t help but fall in love.”

“I didn’t expect much from the cruise party but the fact that we’re all here with the same wishes for Seventeen and can talk, sing and dance [together] is even better than a concert, in a way,” said Hatty. “I became a fan of Seventeen because Susan forced me to watch their videos, but now I’m so glad that she did.”

The cruise came as part of “The City” project held for the first time in Korea by HYBE.

"The City" transforms a city where a HYBE artist performs on tour into a "concert theme park" through various promotional events. Fans can enjoy photo exhibitions, lounges, pop-up stores and cruise parties leading up to the artist's concert.

“The City” for Seventeen was held in five cities across Japan from November to December last year and in Bangkok, Thailand, in February during the band’s “Follow” world tour. It landed in Korea for the first time in tandem with the band’s two concerts that took place on March 30 and 31 in Incheon.

“Seventeen the City” also includes a photo exhibition titled “Follow Fellow,” which is open from Wednesday through April 12 at The Seouliteum gallery in Seongsu-dong, eastern Seoul. The exhibition features behind-the-scenes photos of the members preparing for the “Follow” world tour that ended in January in Macao.

A “lounge” consisting of a resting area, photo zone and merchandise booth is open to the public at IGIS's Seongsu Factorial building, also in Seongsu-dong, from March 29 to April 6. Fans can also buy merchandise at Seventeen's concerts and at the “Artist-made collection by Seventeen” pop-up in Gangnam District, southern Seoul.

The Yeongjong Bridge in Incheon will be lit up in the color of rose quartz, Seventeen’s theme color, until Wednesday.

“The fact that Pledis Entertainment is holding ‘The City’ in Seoul feels good as fans, because the company is heeding the fans’ wishes and trying to cater to our demands,” said 25-year-old Song Yu-na, who came to the cruise with three other Seventeen fans.

“It’s a big consolation for the fact that Seventeen will be celebrating its ninth debut anniversary in Japan. But I know that it wouldn’t have been the members’ choice and we’re happy as long as the oppas are.”

Seventeen held two concerts on Saturday and Sunday at the Incheon Asiad Main Stadium for the Korean leg of their encore concert tour, titled "'Follow' Again to Incheon". The band will be performing in Osaka on May 18 and 19 and in Yokohama on May 25 and 26. May 26 marks the band’s ninth debut anniversary.
