I am a beginner paddler so found it easy to canoe through gorge 2 and 3. Absolutely beautiful views and plenty to look at. Stopped and swam numerous times and did small hike off one of the tracks. Took my own water, snacks and towel. Definitely would recommend full day to see more. Read more Written 24 September 2023

  • 902rhondaw 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Try to get to the front of the group so you can hear the commentary Whilst the park itself was great, we found that if you were at the back of the tour group you were unlikely to really hear the commentary and benefit from the guide's spotlight. So, unfortunately, we were part of the group that found themselves at the back of the group and really don't know much about the caves themselves. When we first arrived (as part of The Ghan tour), it became apparent that there was a brown snake in the vicinity and, although the tour guide was concerned for our safety, his expletives and comment 'let's go see if we can get bitten by a brown snake' didn't really give the group much comfort. It was probably a bit 'tongue in cheek, but probably should have been considered before being spoken out aloud. The caves themselves were great. The bits of the commentary we heard were interesting, but the guide should have either been in the middle of the group or it might have been better to split the group and have 2 tour guides. I didn't bring anything with me to pass the time for an hour and there isn't a cafe so I turned around and drove back into Katherine. No explanation was offered as to why the 2pm tour wasn't running. Our guide provided an excellent insight into the local indigenous people and the history & fauna/ flora associated with the Gorge. It is a spectacular place to visit. They took us to the first gorge where we got our canoe, and then we paddled further up the river. We brought drinks and snacks, picnicked and took a bath in the crystal clear river. Nitmiluk tours is maybe a bit pricey, but what can you expect in a national park. We had a great day with stunning beautiful nature, and would recommend this as a great way to explore the Kathrine gorge river. Absolutely stunning scenery along Katherine Gorge at that time of the day. Returning to the top Gorge our dinner boat was awaiting. Greeted with a glass of champagne we were shown our seating. The dinner service and meal exceeded all expectations. A choice of beef or barramundi plus vegetarian option. The meal began with a platter of indigenous foods and flavours to try- the crocodile meat and kangaroo meat were mouth watering. A beautifully presented salad platter was served with the main course. And yes there was desert. It was a top class meal and fun atmosphere. Read more Written 7 August 2023

  • fairytravels88 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Saw a crocodile but he didn't see me We did the half day kayaking adventure through gorges 1,2,3. The tour starts on a boat tour that takes you up the first gorge and we were even lucky enough to see a crocodile! After that you disembark the boat and get loaded up in the canoes. We did a double canoe which I think is great for couples. You need a moderate level of fitness to do this activity so I think separate canoes might have been a bit tough for me. But I saw many older couples and families with preteen kids so it's not like you have to be a fitness guru to enjoy it. Wear your bathing suit under and pack a lunch! There are places to beach your canoe and swim or hike up a bit and explore. We went pretty far until the second set of rocks and then ditched our canoe to swim around in a pool. I'm not a strong swimmer and it was easy for me even without the life jacket. I've heard the 5th gorge is really beautiful but you'd need to go on the full day tour to make it there. Maybe next time! • Tourist61789665956 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Kayak hire, not a tour. Firstly the Katherine Gorge is spectacular but the experience could be so much better. The staff at the kayak point are lazy. Had issues with the kayak and had to tell several times to get assistance. Like when we arrived they were obviously asleep. We were expecting some sort of education about the gorge, but there was absolutely none. Didn't expect a guide with us the whole time but it was disappointing not to learn anything about the gorge. The check in was also disorganised before we left and very manual. The conditions for the tour should be sent beforehand rather than reading and then signing a waiver, which meant waiting in queues. The experience has great potential but needs a few tweeks and more professionalism. Read more Written 3 July 2023

You travel by boat through the first gorge and then a short walk over some rocks to the canoes. The staff were friendly and helps us into our canoe. We then had almost 3 hours to canoe and explore the gorge by ourselves. You can travel as far up the gorge as your fitness and time allows, but it’s also fun to take it easy. We also jumped in the water for a refreshing swim. There’s so much to see and it’s a fun way to get explore the gorge. Great for little kids and big kids as well as adults. Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge is a network of thirteen gorges carved from billion-year-old sandstone country by the Katherine River in Nitmiluk National Park. Aboriginal culture is strong in the area and there are many Aboriginal rock art sites dotted throughout the park. It is a haven for nature lovers, with its rugged landscapes, dramatic waterfalls and lush gorges providing an abundance of flora and fauna.

Leaving Darwin we travel south through tropical country, passing former WWII airstrips en route to Adelaide River. We make a short stop at the Adelaide River War Cemetery, a site dedicated to those killed in the air raids in Darwin in the 1940s.

Continue to Edith Falls, where there is time for a refreshing swim in the paperbark and pandanas fringed waterhole beneath the falls (conditions permitting). After your included lunch, we join a 2 hour scenic cruise through Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park, with a chance to see freshwater crocodiles sunning themselves on the banks of the river and many interesting species of birdlife. Our cruise of the first two gorges takes us past sheer rock walls and requires an 800 metre walk to reach the second gorge. Enjoy a drive back through the township of Katherine, the hub of the region’s cattle and farming industries. Travel via Pine Creek, an historic gold mining town.

Katherine – Nitmiluk Gorge Cruise

Cruise down Katherine River as the large rock formations of the Gorge tower over the calm water. Nitmiluk is home to the Indigenous Jawoyn people and many of their stories centre around the Gorge.

Calls of the cicada resonate across the water between the massive sandstone cliffs while you cruise down the First and Second Gorges listening to stories about how the Gorge came to be named. The sheer walls of the Gorge, etched by time and the elements, are home to a myriad of plant and animal life, much of it unique to this area and all playing a role to the lives of its traditional owners.

A walk of approximately 500 metres over rocky terrain is required in both directions between the First and Second Gorges. It is suggested a good level of mobility is required to participate in this excursion.

Recommended Fitness Level: Moderate to high – approximately a total of 2 kilometres of walking required.

“Nitmiluk is home and I love sharing its stories, culture, plants & animals to thousands of visitors annually.”

Trehaan

“I started at Nitmiluk as a teenager 26years ago as I needed a job and had a new baby on the way. At the time I wanted to try Tour Guiding as a way of earning money and working outdoors – something I have been passionate about my whole life. Growing up in the Top End, my family travelled around a lot for work and I really enjoyed being in the open, remote areas.

I love the changing seasons of Nitmiluk and the variety of guiding conditions, some more challenging than others. In the dry season, we navigate boats in calmer waters as the river slowly drops , and in the wet season, well, the river can rise and fall throughout the day – every day can bring something different.

katherine gorge cruise booking

“Katherine is my home – I grew up here amongst the rugged landscapes and immersed in the Culture. When I was younger, I volunteered with Rangers and older Family Members who were working as Tour Guides.

I wanted to work on Country at Nitmiluk to share stories of my ancestors and pass on the knowledge. I’ve loved being able to do this for the past 3.5years as part of the Cultural, Caves & River Teams.

Over the years I’ve enjoyed meeting people from different cultures and backgrounds. I love that I can always learn something new about other people or cultures, whist sharing teaching visitors about Nitmiluk and Jawoyn Culture.

katherine gorge cruise booking

“I started working at Nitmiluk as a tour guide because I heard that we needed tour guides through word of mouth, always thought id be a good tour guide with a love for the outdoors so I applied and got the job.

I love working here at Nitmiluk tours because no two days are the same, there is always something different happening in one of the most picturesque places in the country.

katherine gorge cruise booking

“I have grown up in Katherine the majority of my life, once I got older I saw the opportunity to understand and learn more about the culture.

I love working as a tour guide because you get to meet new people every day and teach everyone about Jawoyn Culture.

Briccarnee

“Because of my dad. Him working as a tour guide out there since I was a baby. I originally wanted to be a tour guide but, at the time, the river team was full – that was 9-10 years ago-, so I enjoy being on the reservation team though.

There are numerous reasons to love the Gorge and the company behind it. One big obvious reason is the beautiful Gorge itself, and the seasonal changes; it’s just amazing to watch over.

Along with the seasonal changes, the work load and the routine changes. I love it because it’s unique and not repetitive. Everyday is new and different at Nitmiluk.
