The "Vegas to LA : Grand national parks" trip was great! Our tour leader, Juli, was really accomodating and always had an answer when asked a question about the natural parks. Plus, she made efforts to speak in a way that even people who are not 100% at ease with English could understand, which was nice. The season was perfect to hike in the parks, I just wish we could have stayed more time in some of them (Bryce Canyon, Joshua Tree…).

Golden West Adventure - Los Angeles Downtown (ending in Las Vegas)

Although the dates of the tour were promoted as being an English language tour it was indeed an English, Italian and Spanish guided tour. When I booked the tour I noticed there were dates specifically for Italian and Spanish so I selected the one that said English. I did not mind the three languages so much but at times it was hard to follow what the guide was saying, I do not fault the guide. It just made some parts of the tour a bit lacking. As far as I know there were only two others in the group that relied on English for this tour. After speaking with them I thought they felt the same way. I had no problems with the others on the tour. They generally seemed very nice. The tour was promoted as having an half day tour of Los Angeles, mainly in the Hollywood area, but the tour only lasted three hours. After that we could remain with the group to take an optional tour of the beach area. or find our way back to the hotel on our own being reimbursed for for what we would pay. Although the beach trip was great, I felt only three hours of an advertised half day tour was misleading. The tour seemed rushed at times and not enough time to spend at some locations. I realize there were great distances between locations that would account for this. But maybe some things could be tweaked. I am not sure I can recommend this tour to my American friends If it was ONLY in English, yes, since there wee options for an Italian and Spanish tour. Maybe the tour company is generated for citizens of other countries and that is great. I love having them visit the USA. And I love visiting other countries myself. I have been to 35. This is the first time I have taken a guided tour of the USA. Mario, the tour director, and Norman, the bus driver, both were great. Mario seemed to make sure I understood some directions.

Unpopular opinion: The train is the best mode of vacation transportation.

I’ll take the ease of ticket purchasing, relaxed atmosphere in the stations and breathtaking scenery of train travel over the stress of flying and angst of driving any day. I’ve ridden the train up and down the Southern California coast, taken the three-day Amtrak journey from L.A. to Seattle (twice!), spent a couple of days in a scenic car over the Canadian Rockies and traveled by rail in Europe and Japan. My observation is that people are just nicer when they’re traveling by train — except for that one guy who glared at me when my coffee splashed near him as we went over a particularly bumpy bridge in Oregon.

Dennis Mukai, an artist who lives in Ojai and travels frequently to San Juan Capistrano, San Diego and San Luis Obispo, started taking the train in 2018 when the horrific Montecito mudslides closed the 101 Freeway. “It’s now been six years,” he said. “ I rarely opt to drive as the train gives me the opportunity to read, catch up on my work or catch up on sleep.”

Taking a day trip via Amtrak is a great way to get a taste of train travel without committing to a multiday trip. In this guide, I highlight seven trips that start at Union Station, take three hours or less each way and have plenty of fun things to do within walking distance of the stations.

First, some travel tips:

• Make your time at Union Station part of your itinerary. There’s nothing like walking through the majestic entrance and halls to experience all the romanticism of train travel. You can even kick off your trip at with a celebratory Bloody Mary at classic restaurant and bar Traxx . There are several parking options. Lot B, which is right in front of the entrance, usually has plenty of open spots and is $16 for the entire day. Other lots will get you closer to the tracks, but you’ll miss out on walking through the beautiful lobby.
• You might consider upgrading to business class, as the price difference is not that significant (a recent search for a fare from L.A. to Santa Barbara was only $16 more than coach). The upsell will get you benefits such as priority boarding, less crowded cars, more leg room, a dedicated attendant, complimentary drinks and coffee and a surprisingly substantial snack box (mine had crackers, cheese, hummus, dried fruit, a beef stick and brownie crisps).
• You can bring your own food on the train — unlike with air travel, no one will throw out your $20 smoothie. There’s also the Market Café on the Pacific Surfliner, which sells snacks, light meals and beverages including coffee, beer and wine.

If you’re hoping to catch the most stunning scenery, where you sit makes a difference. If you’re heading north of L.A., try to snag a seat on the left side of the train. After leaving Union Station, you’ll roll through city stops like Glendale, and the Bob Hope Airport, and then start seeing some lush valley and agricultural views. After that, you’ll ride through the tunnels of the Santa Susana Pass and get a glimpse of the craggy rock formations in Chatsworth. Once you hit Oxnard, you’ll be in for some breathtaking vistas of the Pacific Ocean and beaches.

Heading south, a seat on the right side of the train will get you some great views once you pass San Juan Capistrano. Up until this point you’ll be inland and rolling through city stops, but some of the stations are beautiful and should be noted. You might recognize the massive Mediterranean-style station in Santa Ana from the TV series “True Detective” and the movie “Rain Man,” and the stop at the Anaheim station gives you a perfect view of Anaheim Stadium. After San Juan Capistrano, you’ll be treated to gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean and beaches, and destinations for future trips, like the San Clemente Pier.

Utah cat found safe in California after sneaking into Amazon return box

Galena survived six days of travel with no food or water before being discovered in relatively good shape by Amazon employee

In the famous Schrödinger’s cat hypothesis, a cat in a box is both alive and dead until someone looks inside – and in the case of one mischievous cat from Utah discovered inside an Amazon return package, it was very much alive.

The cat, Galena, survived being shipped all the way from Lehi, Utah, across the US to California after sneaking into the package. Galena, six, an indoor-only cat, traveled more than 500 miles in a 3-by-3ft shipping container, according to NBC .

Galena endured six days of travel with no food or water, but was discovered in relatively good shape by an Amazon employee.

Her owner, Carrie Clark, first discovered that her beloved companion was missing on 10 April. Family and friends quickly helped her look for the cat, passing around posters.

“Galena, our super shy indoor cat escaped today,” Clark wrote about Galena’s disappearance to a Facebook group for lost pets. “She’s a part of our family and has never been gone this long before.”

A week later, Clark and her husband got an astonishing notification from Galena’s microchip: the cat had been discovered in Los Angeles.

At first she thought the notification was a mistake. But Galena the cat had actually been mailed cross-country.

Brandy Hunter, an Amazon worker at a California warehouse, said co-workers informed that they had found a cat in a returned package, Hunter said on Facebook .

Hunter, who self-described as a “crazy cat lady”, took Galena in for the night, then to a local veterinarian.

When the vet scanned Galena’s microchip the Clarks were instantly notified, and the vet also called the Clarks to confirm Galena was now in their care.

The Clarks hopped on a plane and traveled to California to be reunited. While “much skinnier”, Clark confirmed Galena was “completely unharmed”.

“We’re in awe of all the tender mercies that have taken place. It’s a total miracle!” she posted.

She believes Galena may have gotten into the Amazon box while they were trying to seal the return delivery, she told the New York Times . Because the box already weighed more than 30lb, they did not notice the extra weight.

“She doesn’t meow a lot and she loves boxes, so for her, she was really happy in that moment, I’m sure,” Clark said. “Although I’m sure that wasn’t the case later on.”
