Why (and How) to Take a Plant Tour

  • David M. Upton
  • Stephen E. Macadam

By adopting a systematic approach to plant tours, visitors can uncover and communicate a wealth of strategic and operating information.

In recent years, managers have recognized how manufacturing capabilities contribute to a company’s overall strategic strength. The ability to respond quickly to customers’ orders, to customize products to match customers’ exact requirements, or to ramp up production rapidly can be a powerful and difficult-to-imitate competitive weapon. But many corporate managers identify their plants’ capabilities only by accident—as a result of chance conversations with plant managers or operations specialists. Consequently, many managers do not have the information necessary to cultivate, shape, and exploit their company’s manufacturing capabilities. As plants develop, however, they need guidance to build capabilities that meet current and future needs. Plant tours can be a powerful way of providing factories with that kind of direction.

Further things to consider when writing invitation letters to customers

Further things to consider when writing invitation letters to customers

Invitation Letters

Invitation letters are letters you write to request people to meetings, formal occasions, or events. As the name suggests, the first and primary purpose of invitation letters is to request the presence of the recipient and the second is to confirm that the recipient will be present. Although invitation letters are mostly used to invite people to social events, they can also be used when applying for visas. Depending on the event, these letters can be formal or informal. Regardless, all invitation letters must be sent in advance to give the recipient enough time to respond or plan ahead. Great invitation letters are brief and easy to understand. Start by introducing yourself and write a sentence or two about the host. Provide the necessary information regarding the event such as the date and time of the event, venue, dress code, how to accept or decline the invitation, etc. Mention some of the activities that would be taking place during the event and which ones the recipient would be taking part in if any. Provide your contact details in case the recipient needs further information. End by expressing anticipation of the recipient's attendance to the event.

Letters to Customers

Letters to customers are letters written by businesses to people or organizations who buy goods and services from these businesses. These letters can be addressed to specific customers or to all customers, depending on the issue. If you own a business, there are many times you may find it necessary to write to your customers. For example, you may want to send apology letters for billing errors, collection letters to those who owe you money, follow-up letters after initial customers' visits, marketing letters to promote conference events, etc. Constantly writing to your customers is essential as it makes the customers feel valued and strengthens the company-customer relationship. All letters to customers are formal. Therefore you should maintain a professional tone. Address the customer by his/her name instead of "Dear valued customer". Thank the person for being your customer. Convey your message clearly and concisely without mixing information. Separate important information and label it with subheadings. Avoid putting off the customer with detailed terms and conditions. Instead, put these on a different page. Tell the recipient how to contact you and how to stop receiving letters. Conclude with a positive remark. Write your name and hand sign the letter.

Table of Contents

Thanking the company for hosting or welcoming you is the smart way to build business relationships. Make sure to let them know that you value the time they spent accommodating you. The best way for you to do that is with a sincere  thank you letter after company visit .

We’ll also be discussing what you can do to craft a great thank-you message that will genuinely express your thanks.

How Do You Write an Appreciation Message?

Writing a thank-you message is simpler than you might think. It doesn’t need to be several paragraphs long or use complex sentences. Your message just has to be concise and genuinely express your appreciation. Here are some quick and helpful things to remember when writing your message:

Keep It Concise

Nobody has the time to read a novel-length message. Keep your thank-you letter to one page. A short message that’s well written can leave more impact than several paragraphs that just drag on and on.

Use Formal Salutations

You want to make your letter professional. After all, it is an official thank-you letter from you to the company. To do that, you want to start your letter on the right note with a formal opening salutation. Some examples of this are:

Now that you’ve started your letter formally, you need to end it formally as well. Here are some of the closing salutations you can use before your Signature:

  • Best Regards
  • Respectfully

Be Specific With What You’re Thankful For

Are you thankful for your host’s time, for a conversation you had, or for their hospitality? Whatever it is, tell them specifically that you appreciate what they did for you. It’s a way of acknowledging their kind gesture.

Sincerity Is Key

As with any letter, sincerity is very important in an outgoing message. The tone and intent of the letter must be genuine and honest. Write in a personable tone, use an active voice, and get straight to the point.

The words Thank You spelled using wooden letter blocks.

Primary school offer day 2024: Everything you need to know

Primary school offer day

Parents of three and four-year-olds will soon find out what primary school has offered their child a place for the next academic year.

The majority of pupils will be offered a place at one of their preferred primary schools, while most will be offered their top choice.

Here, we explain everything you need to know about primary school offer day, from when you can expect to find out, to how to appeal a decision.

When is primary school offer day and what time are school places released?

Parents will find out which primary school has offered their child a place for September 2024 on  Tuesday 16 April.

The decision will be sent by the local council by either letter or email. Some councils allow parents to view their results through the admissions portal or system. Exactly what time the offers will be released varies by council.

How likely am I to get my first-choice primary school?

We want parents to feel reassured when it comes to getting one of their top choice primary schools.

In 2023, 92.5% of families received an offer from their first choice of primary school and 98.3% received an offer from one of their top three choices.

At the same time, over 1 million additional school places have been created between May 2010 and May 2023, with many more in the pipeline.

What happens after I receive an offer of a school place?

A parent or carer must formally accept the offer by the given deadline. This is usually set through the local authority’s admissions portal or system. You’ll receive details of next steps with the offer.

Can I appeal a primary school placement decision?

If you’re not offered your first-choice school, you can appeal the decision . However, even if you're appealing a decision, we recommend accepting the offer your child did receive so that they have a school place if the appeal is unsuccessful. Accepting another offer won’t affect your appeal or limit other options available to you.

Parents or carers who want to appeal a decision should first contact the school’s admission authority, which is responsible for organising the appeal panel. Parents and carers can find their school’s admission authority by visiting their local council website:  Find your local council - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) .

The panel is independent and will look at the case presented by both the admission authority and the parent before coming to a decision.

The decision of the appeal panel is binding – if the appeal is upheld, the admission authority must offer your child a place at the school.

Admission authorities and appeal panels must comply with the statutory School Admission Appeals Code, which is available  here . Guidance for parents on the admission appeals process can also be found  here .

How are primary school places decided?

All schools have admission criteria to decide which children get places. This criteria is set by the school or local council.

While all state-funded schools must give top priority to admitting children who are in care or have been in care, admission criteria is  different for each school. They may choose to give priority to children:

  • who live close to the school
  • who have a brother or sister at the school already
  • from a particular religion (for faith schools)
  • who are eligible for the pupil premium
  • whose parent has worked at the school for two years or more

Your  local council  can give you information about a school’s criteria.

Why has my child not been offered a place at one of their preferred schools?

Some schools will receive more applications than places it has available and unfortunately not every parent will be successful. Priority must be given to those who most closely meet the school’s specific admission arrangements.

If the local authority is unable to offer a place at one of the parents’ preferred schools, it must offer a place at another school.

In the unlikely event that a parent does not receive an offer of a place on 17 April, parents should contact their local authority for further advice.

Can I join a waiting list for my top-choice primary school?

You can add your child’s name to the waiting list for any school that you’ve applied for. You should still accept the offer you received and this won’t affect where you stand in the waiting list.

Schools must keep a waiting list for at least one term. The waiting list will be ordered by the school’s oversubscription criteria.

In some areas, your child will be automatically added to the waiting lists of the schools you ranked more highly. In others, you must ask to be put on the waiting list. Check the school admissions section of your local authority website to find out how it works in your area.

Parents of Michigan School Shooter Sentenced to 10 to 15 Years in Prison

Jennifer and James Crumbley, whose son killed four people, each faced up to 15 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter convictions.

Jennifer and James Crumbley, who were convicted of involuntary manslaughter for failing to prevent their teenage son from killing four fellow students in the deadliest school shooting in Michigan’s history, were each sentenced on Tuesday to 10 to 15 years in prison.

Their separate jury trials ended in guilty verdicts in February and March , making them the first parents in the country to be convicted over the deaths caused by their child in a mass shooting.

Involuntary manslaughter charges carry a penalty in Michigan of up to 15 years in prison, and prosecutors asked in sentencing memos filed to the court last week that the Crumbleys each serve at least 10 years. Both have been in jail for more than two years while awaiting trial and will receive credit for time served.

“Parents are not expected to be psychic,” Judge Cheryl Matthews of the Oakland County Circuit Court in Pontiac, Mich., said before issuing the sentence. “But these convictions are not about poor parenting. These convictions confirm repeated acts or lack of acts that could have halted an oncoming runaway train — repeatedly ignoring things that would make a reasonable person feel the hair on the back of her neck stand up.”

Before the hearing, prosecutors said that Ms. Crumbley, 46, was asking to be sentenced to house arrest on her defense lawyer’s property, rather than serving prison time. And Mr. Crumbley, 47, said that he had been wrongly convicted and his sentence should amount to the time he had already served in prison, adding that he felt “absolutely horrible” about what had happened.

On Tuesday, each of them spoke in the hearing before the judge pronounced sentence.

“I stand today not to ask for your forgiveness, as I know it may be beyond reach, but to express my sincerest apologies for the pain that has been caused,” Ms. Crumbley said in court, addressing the relatives of students who were killed.

Mr. Crumbley also apologized. “I cannot express how much I wish that I had known what was going on with him or what was going to happen, because I absolutely would have done a lot of things differently,” he said.

Relatives of some of the victims also spoke during the hearing, describing the overwhelming effects the shooting had on their lives.

“The ripple effects of both James’s and Jennifer’s failures to act have devastated us all,” said Jill Soave, the mother of Justin Shilling, 17, who was killed in the shooting at Oxford High School on Nov. 30, 2021. “This tragedy was completely preventable. If only they had done something, your honor, anything, to shift the course events on Nov. 30, then our four angels would be here today.”

Steve St. Juliana, whose daughter, Hana, 14, was killed, said that the Crumbleys continued to fail to take responsibility for what had happened.

“They chose to stay quiet,” he said. “They chose to ignore the warning signs. And now, as we’ve heard through all of the objections, they continue to choose to blame everyone but themselves.”

The Crumbleys’ son, Ethan, was 15 when he carried out the shooting that killed Justin and Hana, as well as Madisyn Baldwin, 17, and Tate Myre, 16. Seven others were injured. Ethan Crumbley pleaded guilty to 24 charges, including first-degree murder, and was sentenced last year to life in prison without parole . He is still eligible to appeal that decision. His parents may appeal, too.

In the trials of both parents, prosecutors focused in part on their failure to remove their son from school after he made a violent drawing on the morning of the shooting. It included a written plea for help.

They also emphasized Ethan’s access to a handgun that Mr. Crumbley had purchased. And they said that Ms. Crumbley had missed signs that her son was struggling with his mental health, adding that she took him to a gun range just days before the shooting.

Defense lawyers for both parents said they could not have foreseen the unspeakable violence their son would commit.

Ms. Crumbley grew up in Clarkston, a Detroit suburb about 20 minutes from Oxford, her lawyer said during a hearing after the couple’s arrest in 2021 . Before her arrest, she had worked as a marketing director, her lawyer said.

Mr. Crumbley’s job history included work at a handful of small software and technology companies.

The couple once lived in Florida but returned to Michigan several years ago, their lawyers said. They bought their home near downtown Oxford in 2015.

The trials of Jennifer and James Crumbley became a lightning rod for issues of parental responsibility at a time of high-profile gun violence by minors. In recent months, parents in other states have pleaded guilty to charges of reckless conduct or neglect after their children injured or killed others with guns.

But the manslaughter charges against the Crumbleys were unique, and legal experts said their trials could serve as a playbook for other prosecutors who seek to hold parents accountable in the future.

Ekow Yankah, a professor at the University of Michigan Law School, said the effect of the ruling on Tuesday might be felt beyond the state.

“This is going to be precedent, most obviously in Michigan and its home jurisdiction, but prosecutors all over the country will see this as a new and viable form of liability,” Mr. Yankah said. “I think we should not underestimate the precedential power of this case, even as we recognize that the facts were quite extraordinary.”

For Matthew Schneider, a former United States attorney in Michigan, what makes this case so different from many others is that most criminal sentences are related to the actions of a defendant, rather than being “about inactions, and how the inactions of a person result in a criminal sentence.”

The sentencing is “very much about making an example of the defendants,” Mr. Schneider said. “This is a shot across the bow to all parents, to all people who have firearms in their house, to keep them locked up, if they could be in the hands of the wrong people.”

Letter: Does the horror of a country laced with Putin’s land mines resonate with you?

Many Utah residents who were focused on their religious conference weekend, should reflect on their “testimony.”

(Tyler Hicks | The New York Times) Ukrainian troops from the 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade on Jan. 29, 2024, in former Russian-held territory outside Bakhmut that they regained control of last month.

Did anyone watch “60 Minutes” on April 7 ?

Does the horror of a country laced with Vladimir Putin’s land mines — capable of destroying innocent lives for years to come — resonate with you?

Do you feel embarrassed by and dismiss the sickness of conspiracy theories driven by members of Congress that Russia has a legitimate place in the future of Ukrainian existence?

Perhaps it should include a prayer for Ukrainian families, soldiers and the countries that support the struggle for Ukrainian freedom!

Iran and Israel's recent attacks, explained

Iranians march.

Tensions between Israel and Iran have reached an unprecedented high in recent days. Last Saturday, Iran launched a barrage of missiles and drones on Israel in response to an Israeli airstrike earlier this month that killed several Iranian military officers.

Israel responded Friday with a targeted operation in Iran that was limited in scope, a source familiar with the matter said.

As a conflict that could further destabilize the Middle East unfolds, here's what to know.

Follow live updates after Israel’s strike on Iran

What did Israel's recent attack on Iran look like?

Iran is currently assessing the damage from Friday's attack, a source familiar with the situation told NBC News, but a nuclear facility in the central Iranian city of Isfahan is safe.

Israeli armored personnel carriers .

The United States has claimed it was not involved with the Israeli attack on Iran, and U.S. officials publicly encouraged restraint in the days leading up to it.

On Friday at a news conference during a G7 meeting in Italy, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the U.S. was “intensely focused” on de-escalating the situation.

Why did Iran attack Israel on April 13?

Iran's attack on Israel was in response to a deadly Israeli airstrike on April 1 at the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria. Brig. Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard's Quds Force, was among several officers killed in the s trike .

Iran's retaliatory attack on Israel left minimal destruction because the vast majority of the more than 300 drones and missiles it fired were shot down by Israeli, U.S. and European forces before reaching Israeli territory.

Israel vowed to retaliate for the Iranian strikes, the first-ever direct military attack by Tehran on the Jewish state.

What are Iran and Israel's nuclear capabilities?

Iran's nuclear capabilities are still unknown. The 2015 Iran nuclear deal brokered by the Obama administration and several other nations limited the country's nuclear capabilities, but the Trump administration withdrew from the accord.

A man crosses a street as motorists drive past a billboard depicting Iranian ballistic missiles in service.

Israel has not confirmed whether it has nuclear weapons, but it's widely believed the country has the technology to produce such equipment.

Who are the leaders of the two countries?

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been the supreme leader of Iran since 1989. Ali Khamenei was also the country's third president from 1981 to 1989. Ebrahim Raisi is Iran's current president. In Iran, the supreme leader, not the president, is the head of state.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has served three separate tenures as prime minister since 1996. H e has drawn fierce criticism in recent months for his failure to stop the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, which killed some 1,200 people. He has also been criticized for his handling of the war against Hamas in Gaza, which has killed more than 33,000 people, according to Palestinian health officials.

Who are their allies?

Iran’s allies include proxy groups in the region such as Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis. The country also has broader support from Syria and ties to other countries in the Middle East and beyond.Israel, also, has alliances with some countries in the Middle East , including Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates. Israel is a "major non-NATO ally," which means member countries are not committed to standing by it if it is attacked, though Israel does have military ties to countries within NATO, like the U.S., and beyond.

The U.S., Britain and Jordan claim to have helped defend Israel itself during the April 13 attacks .
