15 Things To Do In Lifou New Caledonia: For Cruise Ship Passengers & More

Welcome to Lifou! This beautiful island is an absolute paradise and well worth visiting if you are in New Caledonia.

There are also a lot of incredible things to do in Lifou, whether you are a cruise ship passenger just staying 1 day, or you are lucky enough to spend a bit more time here.

Lifou is a paradise island in the South Pacific. Whether you are interested in culture, nature, adventure, or relaxation, there are so many things to do in Lifou.

You may be surprised to know that the majority of visitors actually do so on a cruise ship from Australia or New Zealand. It is a super popular destination for cruise-goers for a good reason.

Personally, I also visited Lifou New Caledonia as part of my Carnival South Pacific Cruise departing from Sydney, Australia. We always made sure we were the first tender off the ship, and straight onto the island so we could make the most out of our time.

Lifou was actually an excellent cruise ship port as there are so many Lifou Island things to do a relatively easy walk from the pier.

Whether you are someone who enjoys a bit of snorkeling, doing a spot of souvenir shopping, or perhaps want to experience some of the local cultures.

Now, let’s discover the best things to do in Lifou New Caledonia.

The BEST 15 Things To Do In Lifou: What To Do In Lifou From Cruise Ship

1. visit notre dame de lourdes chapel.

The Notre Dame de Lourdes Chapel in Lifou is a historical and religious landmark that offers a stunning view of the surrounding bay and island. It was built in 1898 by Catholic missionaries who came to Lifou in 1858 to spread their faith.

The chapel has white architecture with a statue of the Virgin Mary on top. The interior is decorated with artificial flowers and a modest altar. Every year on December 8, the chapel hosts a procession to celebrate Our Lady of Lourdes.

It can be reached by a short but steep path that reveals a breathtaking panorama of the bay at every step. From the top, one can see Sandalwood Bay where cruise passengers disembark, and Jinek Bay, which is a natural underwater reserve with a rich marine life.

Jinek Bay can be accessed by another path from the chapel and offers a great spot for snorkeling, which I will let you know more about below.

If you are visiting Lifou as part of a cruise it is super easy to access Notre Dame de Lourdes Chapel, making it a must of things to do in Lifou New Caledonia.

It is about a 15-minute or so walk from the beach where the tenders arrive.

A quaint chapel with a statue on top bathed in sunlight, with people sitting and walking around, a sight to explore in Lifou from a cruise ship.

2. Snorkel In Jinek Bay Marine Reserve

NOTE: Unfortunately Jinek Bay Marine Reserve is now closed to the public indefinitely. The landowners decided to shut it down after seeing the effect of tourists disrespecting the rules such as standing on coral. There was also a big storm causing a lot of damage including the entryway down to the water. During cruise port days locals are stationed in the area preventing tourists from venturing down.

Jinek Bay is a natural aquarium that hosts a rich diversity of corals and fish in its clear and calm waters and is one of the most popular things to do in Lifou from cruise ship. You can access the bay by stairs from the cliff and explore the shallow coral plateaus and the deeper sandy areas.

You will be amazed by the colors and shapes of the corals, the giant clams, the sea lilies, and the fire clownfish. You might also encounter a Maori wrasse, a yellow-lipped sea krait, or a shoal of convict surgeonfish.

Jinek Bay is a protected marine reserve that limits the number of snorkelers per day and requires a fee of $15 per person. You also need to wear a rashie and avoid using sunscreen to protect the reef from damage.

The coral reef at Jinek Bay is one of the most diverse in Lifou New Caledonia. It covers an area of about 0.5 square kilometers and has over 2,000 different species of marine animals.

The fish at Jinek Bay are colorful and abundant. You can see many different types of fish, such as surgeonfish, butterflyfish, parrotfish, wrasse, damselfish, clownfish, angelfish, triggerfish, and more.

Besides fish, you can also see other marine life at Jinek Bay, such as giant clams, sea lilies, sea cucumbers, sea stars, sea urchins, sea snakes, and more.

Personally, I did find this spot quite overcrowded visiting during our cruise stop. The snorkeling was okay, though there was quite a bit of damage and the current was pretty strong.

We were provided with noodles to help keep afloat and there are two different circuits you can follow to explore. However I will say it was quite difficult spotting the markers when you are level with the water, so we just ended up making our own path.

3. Check Out The Vanilla Plantations

Visiting the vanilla plantations on Lifou is a wonderful way to discover the history, culture, and natural beauty of this island.

Vanilla cultivation was introduced to Lifou by English missionaries in 1860, who gave some plants to the local tribes. Since then, vanilla has become an important part of Lifou’s economy and identity.

The island has several vanilla plantations that are open to visitors, where you can learn about the different stages of growing, harvesting, and processing vanilla.

One of the most popular places to visit is the House of Vanilla, located in the Hnathalo tribe area in southeast Lifou. Here you can see how vanilla pods are sorted, dried, and matured according to organic farming standards. You can also buy some vanilla products, such as beans, extract, powder, or perfume.

The House of Vanilla also organizes tours to the Oni Wael plantation, which is located opposite the house. There you can see how vanilla flowers are pollinated by hand, a delicate and labor-intensive process that requires skill and patience.

4. Visit Luengoni Beach

Luengoni Beach in Lifou is a stunning destination for anyone who loves nature and adventure making it a must for the best things to do in Lifou. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in New Caledonia, with white sand, turquoise water, and coral reefs.

Luengoni Beach is not only a place to relax and enjoy the sun but also a gateway to explore the underwater wonders of Lifou.

Here are some of the things you can do at Luengoni Beach:

  • Snorkel the crystal-clear water and discover amazing marine life, including turtles, fish, and corals. You can also visit the underwater cave that is 30 meters deep and see the light rays shining through the opening.
  • Walk along the beach and admire the scenery, or find a shady spot to picnic or read a book.
  • Hike to the jewels of Luengoni, which are hidden sinkholes surrounded by lush vegetation. These natural pools have emerald-colored water that reflects the sunlight. You will need a guide to reach them, as they are located in a remote area and require some climbing and jumping.
  • Learn about the culture and history of Lifou from the friendly locals, who will welcome you with their smiles and hospitality. You can also visit the nearby village of Lössi and see the traditional houses and churches.

5. Be Amazed By The Jokin Cliffs

The Jokin Cliffs are a stunning natural attraction and are one of the best things to do in Lifou from cruise ship. They are made of layers of ancient coral stone that have been raised above sea level over millions of years.

The cliffs tower over the ocean at a height of about 60 meters in some places, offering a breathtaking view of the coastline and the turquoise water below.

The Jokin Cliffs are located in the north of Lifou, on the land of the Jokin tribe. You can access them by car from Wé, the main village of Lifou, and then take a stairway down to the foot of the cliffs.

There, you can admire the burial chambers of the tribe’s former leaders, who were laid to rest in this sacred place. You can also enjoy some snorkeling or diving in the clear water, where you might encounter a variety of marine life.

If you are visiting as part of a cruise you will be able to book a tour of the Jokin Cliffs through Carnival or P&O directly.

Alternatively, you can try and wait until you arrive for a cheaper price and to ensure your money goes straight towards supporting the local economy.

However, I personally didn’t see any taxis or people offering this tour. Nevertheless, I am sure if you were to ask some of the locals at the port they would be able to put you in contact with the right person.

6. Experience The Local Culture

One of the best ways to experience the local culture in Lifou is by visiting the traditional huts of the Kanak people , the original inhabitants of New Caledonia.

These huts are made of natural materials such as wood, bamboo, and palm leaves, and have a distinctive conical shape.

They are designed to withstand cyclones and provide ventilation and shade. Some of the huts are open for visitors, while others are reserved for the locals.

By staying overnight in a traditional Melanesian hut, you can enjoy the opportunity to try local dishes, learn about Kanak customs, and gain a greater understanding of what makes this South Pacific culture so special.

You can also interact with the friendly and hospitable locals, who will welcome you with a smile and a coconut drink. You can learn about their history, their beliefs, and their way of life.

7. Check Out The Open Air Markets

One of the most enjoyable Lifou Island things to do is to visit the open-air markets that are set up by the locals near the wharf right where you get off the cruise ship.

The markets are a great way to experience the culture and cuisine of the island, as well as to find some unique souvenirs and handicrafts. Here are some tips on how to make the most of your visit to the open-air markets in Lifou:

  • The markets are usually open from 8 am to 4 pm, but they may close earlier or later depending on the weather and the number of visitors.
  • The stalls generally accept both Australian dollars and Pacific francs, but it is advisable to have some local currency on hand for smaller purchases. You can exchange money at the post office or at some of the stalls. Be prepared to bargain with the vendors.

The markets offer a variety of goods, such as clothing, jewelry, wood carvings, baskets, mats, shells, spices, vanilla, coconut oil, and more.

There is also a good food selection, where you can sample some delicious island dishes, such as bougna, grilled lobster, coconut crab, banana fritters, fresh fruit, and more. You can also try some local drinks, such as kava, coconut water, or fruit juice.

8. Learn About The Islands History At The Museum Of Lifou

Visiting the Museum of Lifou is a great way to learn more about the history and culture of this beautiful island. The museum is located in the village of Easo, near the Notre Dame de Lourdes church.

The museum is open from Monday to Friday, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, and on Saturday from 8:30 am to 12 pm. The entrance fee is 500 XPF / $4.50 per person.

The museum showcases various aspects of Lifou’s traditional and contemporary life, such as the architecture, agriculture, crafts, ceremonies, and customs of the local people.

You can see examples of traditional huts, canoes, tools, weapons, costumes, and jewelry. You can also learn about the island’s flora and fauna, as well as its geology and climate.

The museum is run by a friendly and knowledgeable staff who can answer your questions and guide you through the exhibits. You can also book a guided tour of the village and the church for an additional fee. The tour lasts about an hour and a half and gives you a deeper insight into the history and culture of Easo.

9. Visit The Nearby Islands

Visiting the nearby islands from Lifou is a great way to experience the diversity and beauty of the Loyalty Islands. You can choose from several options depending on your preferences and budget.

Tiga Island: One option is to take a boat tour that will take you to Tiga Island, the smallest and least populated of the Loyalty Islands. Tiga Island is known for its pristine beaches, turquoise lagoon, and rich marine life. You can also visit the traditional village of Wadra and learn about the local culture and history. A boat tour to Tiga Island usually lasts about 4 hours and costs around 10,000 XPF / $91.00 per person.

Ouvéa: Another option is to fly to Ouvéa Island, the northernmost and most remote of the Loyalty Islands. Ouvéa Island is famous for its 25 km long white sand beach, which is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. Ouvéa Island is also home to a variety of birds, including the endemic Ouvéa parakeet, which is endangered and protected. A flight to Ouvéa Island from Lifou takes about 30 minutes and costs around 15,000 XPF / $136.00 per person.

Maré: A third option is to fly to Maré Island, the southernmost and most rugged of the Loyalty Islands. Maré Island is characterized by its volcanic landscape, with cliffs, caves, pools, and waterfalls. Maré Island is also rich in traditions and customs, with many sacred sites and ceremonies. You can hike, dive, or fish on the island, or visit the local markets and handicrafts shops. A flight to Maré Island from Lifou takes about 20 minutes and costs around 12,000 XPF / $109.00 per person.

Even though visiting the nearby islands is one of the best things to do in Lifou I only recommend it if you are staying multiple days here, this isn’t suitable for cruise ship passengers.

10. Hike The Ancient Forest

Hiking the ancient forest in Lifou is a wonderful way to experience the natural beauty and cultural heritage of this island.

The ancient forest is one of the few remaining old-growth forests in the world, and it is home to some of the oldest trees on the island.

If you want to hike through the ancient forest, you can join a guided tour that will take you along a scenic trail through the forest and along the seaside cliffs.

On it, you will learn about the history and traditions of the local people, and how they use the plants for medicine, food, and crafts. You will also have a chance to take photos of the stunning views.

There are different options for booking a hiking tour through the ancient forest. This is one of the best things to do in Lifou if you are visiting by cruise ship. Both Carnival and P&O offer a hike with their shore excursions.

The tours vary in price, duration, and difficulty level, so make sure to check the details before you book.

Some things to keep in mind are:

  • This tour requires extensive walking through rocky, uneven terrain and is not recommended for guests with limited mobility.
  • Modest attire is required; knees, shoulders, and midriffs must be covered; short shorts and swimwear are not allowed. It is important to ask permission before taking an individual’s photograph.
  • The bus is not air-conditioned or equipped with a PA system.
  • Local escorts and students will act as guides who will do their best to speak English, but please keep in mind that the limited tourism infrastructure is part of Lifou’s charm.
  • The restroom facilities are rustic.
  • To make your adventure as enjoyable as possible please wear comfortable flat-soled shoes, clothing suited to the weather conditions, bring a hat, plenty of sunscreen, and bottled water.

11. Discover The Secret Grotto

One popular thing to do in Lifou, especially for cruise shipgoers is visiting the Secret Grotto . This is located a short walk from the wharf in the opposite direction to the Notre Dame de Lourdes Chapel.

You can book a guided tour that will take you on a walk through the forest, where you can see and learn about the native plants and animals.

The highlight of the tour is the secret grotto, which is a cave that has been formed by water erosion over thousands of years. The entrance to the grotto is hidden by vegetation, and you have to descend a steep and slippery path to get inside.

Once you are in the grotto, you will be amazed by the sight of stalagmites and stalactites that have formed.

You can also swim in the crystal clear water that fills the bottom of the cave. The water is cool and refreshing, and you can see fish and other creatures swimming around.

One thing I will say is I do not recommend the secret grotto if you are not comfortable navigating up and down jungle stairs with no railing this probably isn’t the activity for you. It is quite steep in some parts, this could especially cause issues if the track is muddy.

12. Find Turtles At Easo Beach

The beach at Lifou Wharf is a beautiful spot to enjoy the sun, sand, and sea. It is located near the Easo village, where the cruise ships dock and the Wharfside Markets are held.

It is popular with visitors who want to relax, swim, snorkel, or kayak in the clear blue water. Easo Beach also offers stunning views of the Notre Dame de Lourdes chapel, which stands on a hill overlooking the bay.

One of my personal favorite things about this beach is that it is a free spot where you can swim with turtles. Now there is no guarantee of this, but numerous visitors, including myself, have had great luck.

If you are keen to see turtles while on your cruise there is no better place than in the wild, where you can watch them chill out. Just remember to respect the turtles, make sure you keep some distance and do not touch them.

A palm tree with a sign containing prohibitions and guidelines for visitors is situated among other palms on a beach in Lifou, illustrating some of the things to do and regulations to follow when visiting from a cruise ship.

13. Hike Mount N’Ga

Hiking Mount N’Ga on Lifou is a great way to experience the natural beauty and is one of the best things to do in Lifou.

Mount N’Ga is the highest point on Lifou, reaching 132 meters above sea level. It offers panoramic views of the surrounding lagoon, coral reefs, and villages.

The hike is about 3 kilometers long and takes about an hour and a half to complete. It is suitable for all levels of fitness and can be done with or without a guide.

To start the hike, you need to get to the village of Hnathalo, which is about 20 kilometers from the main town of Wé.

You can take a bus, a taxi, or rent a car to get there. Once you arrive at Hnathalo, you will see a sign that says “Mont N’Ga” and a trail that leads to the mountain.

The trail is well-marked and easy to follow. Along the way, you will pass through coconut plantations, native forests, and grasslands. You will also see some traditional Kanak houses and monuments, such as the Grand Case (the chief’s house) and the Tumulus (a burial mound).

The hike is not very steep or difficult, but it can be hot and humid, so make sure to bring enough water and sunscreen. You will also need to pay a small fee of 300 XPF / $3.00 to enter the trail, which goes to the local community.

As you reach the summit of Mount N’Ga, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the island and the ocean. You can see the different shades of blue and green of the water, the white sand beaches, and the colorful coral reefs.

14. Try The Local Dish Bougna

One of the most iconic dishes of the Kanak people is bougna, a stew made with coconut milk, root vegetables, and meat or seafood.

Bougna is usually cooked in a traditional earthen oven, where the ingredients are wrapped in banana leaves and placed over hot stones.

The result is a tender and flavorful dish that is served on special occasions and ceremonies.

You can purchase this dish down at the open-air market and it’s the perfect way to keep your energy levels up between snorkeling sessions!

15. Do A Tour Of Luciella Beach

A tour of Luecila Beach in Lifou is a great way to experience the natural beauty and culture of this island in New Caledonia. Here is a possible description of what you can expect from this tour:

You will board a bus or a van that will take you on a scenic drive across the island, passing by hibiscus and poinsettia hedges, traditional village houses, and lush green hills.

Enjoy the views of the turquoise sea and the coral reefs along the way. You will also learn about the history and customs of the local people from your guide, who may be a local escort or a student.

After about an hour, you will arrive at Luecila Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Lifou. You will be greeted by a refreshing coconut drink and a stunning panorama of white sand, blue water, and palm trees.

Swim in the crystal-clear water, sunbathe on the soft sand, or stroll along the shore. You can also browse the market stalls that sell locally-made crafts, souvenirs, and artwork. You may find some unique items such as shell necklaces, woven baskets, or wooden carvings.

After enjoying your time at Luecila Beach, you will board the bus or the van again and head back to your cruise ship. On the way back, you will have another chance to admire the scenery and take some photos.

Lifou, New Caledonia

Description.

The largest of the Loyalty Islands, Lifou lies some 118 miles to the northwest of New Caledonia. The island is an ancient makatea - a fossilized coral atoll raised high above sea level. Whalers were the first Westerners to visit this Melanesian paradise - though greedy traders lured by the island's aromatic sandalwood trees soon followed. Today's visitors are drawn attracted to the island's spectacular scenery, which ranges from dense tropical forest to dramatic cliffs towering above the crashing waves. Lifou's white-sand beaches are some of the finest to be found in the entire Pacific. Lifou and the other Loyalty Islands are part of New Caledonia, which, like Tahiti, is an overseas province of France. The island is a center of traditional Melanesian culture. Easo is an anchorage port. Guests transfer to shore via ship's tender.

Endless layers of ancient compressed coral stone make up Jokin's towering cliffs. Once the island's barrier reef walls, they offer dazzling views of Lifou's clear aquamarine water, vibrant fish population and the occasional whale.

Melt over the soft, powdery white sand, shade-friendly beach trees and brilliant blue-green water of breathtaking Luengoni Beach, a genuine slice of paradise with incredible rocky coral formations standing knee-deep in the sea.

At Mucaweng Vanilla Plantation, which sits in a lush forest on Lifou's northern coast, learn how vanilla vines are harvested, sample vanilla-infused products and savor the scent of organic pods, which are available for purchase.

Marvel at St. Pierre Baptist Church, built by Catholic missionaries in 1883, and the Grand Case, New Caledonia's largest thatched chiefs' hut, and delight in customary Kanak song and dance in this traditional Melanesian village.

Perched high atop Lifou's northwestern coastal cliffs on the Easo Peninsula, this historic church was built by Catholic missionaries in 1898. After exploring the lovely chapel, soak up stunning views of Santal Bay's sparkling waters.

Snorkel and dive amongst brilliant tropical sea life in the crystal-clear waters of Jinek Bay, a serene spot whose amazing occupants include pearlscale angelfish, fire clownfish, purple acropora, parrot fish and bold Picassofish.

Every weekend is an adventure

Things to do in lifou and why it became my favourite island in new caledonia.

  • Post published: 20 May 2016
  • Post category: New Caledonia / Oceania/South Pacific

After spending a few days in Noumea on the main island , Lifou was the first island we visited in New Caledonia. I fell in love with the place, and the feeling did not fade as we got to see more places in New Caledonia . Indeed, Lifou is the destination I preferred over our entire first trip to New Caledonia. There are many things to do in Lifou, and I will be back to explore it again!

Why did I like Lifou so much?

It appeared to me wilder and simpler than Ouvea or the Isle of Pines . And more interesting and welcoming than the main island. We had excellent local encounters on Mare Island and Ouvea Island during our second trip. It changed my feeling about Lifou: I realised I loved it so much the first time because of the people we met there. Still, it’s kept the number one spot in my heart as the best place for snorkelling!

Lifou is a big island with many things to do. We had three days there, and it was not enough to explore it all. We decided to focus our visit on the northern part. If there is a boat cruise while visiting Lifou, you can avoid the sudden crowd by escaping to the south. This article details things to do in Lifou during a three-day trip, and why I loved it so much.

One of my favourite things to do in Lifou: an overnight trek with a tribe

We spent two days on a secluded beach with young people from the hunete tribe..

Lifou - Tressage - Elo

During our first stay in New Caledonia, Lifou offered us the most interesting interaction with residents. We booked a tour ( [email protected] ) to spend two days in nature with young people from the Hunete tribe at the northwest of the island on Santal Bay.

Although the tribes have their own language, New Caledonia is part of France, and they all also speak French there. It makes it perfect for us to interact with locals. Young people would learn English at school – as the French do – but the level varies (as it does in France!).

Our guide Elisa took us for  a walk in the forest to show us the different local plants and flowers  they use for healing or eating. Some had European names or equivalent; some did not. I had never heard of most of them. I am always fascinated by how much we can get from the forest and how little most people know about it.

After two hours in the woods, we reached the camp right next to the beach. It was simple, with only the necessary things needed for minimal comfort. No shower, no electricity, no mattresses. But they were well equipped for cooking and entertaining us! Once at the camp, we met Jean, Etienne and Simeon. Three different characters with a strong common wish to make our stay the best possible. On arrival, they opened fresh coconuts for us to have drinks and snacks.

I was touching the dream of simple living on a tropical island and loving it .

It was interesting to learn and taste the stages of coconut maturation. They taught us how to grate coconuts and make coconut milk. They had gone fishing earlier today while we were hiking, and Etienne was cooking our first meal. He would use our freshly made coconut milk for the rice. We had a feast during our two days at the Lifou Nature Camp: coconuts, fish, taro, manioc, sweet potatoes, infusion from the herbs picked up in the nearby forest, and even clamps.

Lifou Nature is an excellent example of eco-tourism.

They cherish their beautiful land and want to protect it . A few years ago, the Chief of the tribe decided this beach would become a protected area, and fishing has been forbidden since then. It had a positive impact on marine life. Unfortunately, all the trash from Santal Bay would end up on this beach because of the wind and the current. Yet, it looked relatively clean. I was thrilled when Simeon mentioned they would spend time during each trip cleaning the beach. As you may be aware, I like cleaning places I visit during my travels; it’s a way to have a positive impact. Doing that with some locals and my family was amazing. We picked up many small plastic pieces, flip flops, and different parts from a traditional boat that had drowned.

Of course, we did not come here only to clean the beach and hear about the increasing marine life. We were keen to check it out ourselves! We did some  snorkelling  with Elisa. Again, the coral and variety of fish were fabulous. This time, our highlight was to see the Tricot Raye, a highly poisonous local sea snake who is so calm that it is not even dangerous in the end.

Back around the fire, we improvised a  weaving workshop .

It was a big accomplishment for me to learn how to create a plate from palm trees. Elisa and Jean were patient as my manual skills are close to inexistent. Later, our dinner was served in the dish I built. Although weaving is usually for women, the men were good at it and helped us create small balls we could play with for the rest of our trip in New Caledonia!

At night, we went for a  coconut crab hunt .

It happens in two phases. The first one occurs before it gets dark: it is time to set up the traps. I honestly had no idea hunting could be that easy. The hardest part is to prepare the material: you need coconuts cut in half and sharp sticks. Then, you need to choose spots to place your stick with the coconut at the top. When you come back a few hours later during the night, you will find coconut crabs eating the coconuts, as if they were waiting to be picked up. It can be tricky to catch a big coconut crab to tie it: with its strength, it can break your finger! So you’d better know what you are doing. Jean and Simeon had done it so many times that it looked almost easy. That night, the crabs we found were too small to be eaten, so we released them.

If all these activities – and the food! – were fun and fabulous, none of these was the highlight of our stay.

Meeting Elisa, Simeon, Etienne and Jean was a rich and touching experience .

They were welcoming and careful to ensure our entire family was having a good time. Still, they were being themselves and not pretending. We felt there was no gap between them and us. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the Kanak culture. Simeon was especially very open and sincere during our discussions around the fire about traditions and ways of life. Our stay only lasted two days, but it was funny how sad we felt when we had to leave. But of course, it is something to be happy about: it meant we enjoyed our time!

Jinek Natural Aquarium: the best snorkelling spot ever!

New Caledonia Things To Do - Jinek (Lifou)

Jinek Natural Aquarium is simply the most spectacular reef snorkelling I have ever done. The clarity of the water is exceptional, but it is the size and the diversity of corals that also make Jinek incredible. We spotted a lot of lovely fish and other fascinating marine creatures. Our highlights were finding a giant eel and a tiny spider!

Make sure you go there before a boat cruise visits the island. Avoid it when there are hundreds of tourists around. Although they now restrict the numbers, the crowd messes with the environment, and locals told us that fish are less numerous during and after a cruise visit.

Learning about vanilla at Janine’s plantation: a must-do in Lifou

new caledonia lifou vanilla farm

I had no idea visiting a vanilla plantation could be that fun and entertaining . But I don’t know if Janine speaks English to make the experience good for non-francophones.

We only visited one “Vanilleraie” during our trip to New Caledonia, and I am glad we picked this one. While visiting her beautiful garden, Janine will tell you all you want to know about vanilla. I was impressed by the complexity of it. Such a fiddly job! Her husband Felix was the one who re-launched the vanilla activity on Lifou island and who trained most locals.

Janine will talk about so much more than just vanilla pods. As we all sat around the table for a degustation of vanilla tea or coffee with local fruits, she would share her views about some challenges with the modern world and children’s education. It is funny to see that no matter the culture and lifestyle differences, the same types of problems seem recurrent with teenagers!

Vanilla production is an important activity on Lifou and a delicious ingredient in the cuisine of New Caledonia. They often served us sauces with our fish that had a touch of vanilla. If you want to learn more about the plantations and their history, you can also visit the House of Vanilla (Maison de la Vanille) on Lifou. You may even be able to buy some pods there if they have any left: it’s a popular item!

Beautiful lookouts in the north of the island

There is a short and easy walk to reach the Notre Dame de Lourdes chapel at the top of a hill. From there, the view is fantastic . We could spot all the places we went to in the past couple of days, from the Santal Bay up to the Jokin Cliffs on the top end of the island. At the Joking cliffs, we were once again fascinated by the shades of blue in the water .

On our way to Ouvea, we flew over all the north of Lifou. Travelling from one island to another in a small plane offering an amazing bird view of the beautiful lagoons is a real experience by itself. It was one of the most scenic flights ever !

Scuba diving on Lifou

We tried to go scuba diving when we visited Lifou. Unfortunately, we never received an answer from the dive shop. We also heard a few negative comments about the safety of their operation, so we decided to focus on other activities. We picked other destinations for scuba diving in New Caledonia ( Hienghene , Poindimie and the Isle of Pines). We hope scuba diving will be back on the list of possible activities in Lifou next time we visit!

Lilo reve - lifou - accueil en tribu

As a logical choice with our decision to explore the north of the island, we stayed at Lilo Reve *, the six of us sleeping in a “ fare ” or “ case ” (on mattresses on the ground in a traditional hut). Lilo Reve location is perfect with beautiful access to the sea at the bottom of the property. You’ll be amazed by the stunning blue water and beautiful rocks. But that’s not it: they frequently spot sea turtles from the shore!

Food and comfort were average but well-aligned with our expectations for accommodation in that price range in New Caledonia. We felt welcomed; everybody was friendly and willing to help.

We ate a couple of times at Fenepaza *, a nearby restaurant recommended by our host at Lilo Reve. It was a great place to try local cuisine; their wood fire gave some really interesting taste to our dishes. The service was excellent. Some Internet addicts in our group appreciated the free wifi!

Where is lifou island.

Lifou is the biggest and most populated island of the Iles Loyautes, located 190 km to the east of New Caledonia’s mainland. You can go to Lifou by plane from Noumea with Air Loyaute (the easiest), by boat with the local Betico or a big cruise boat from Australia . From our experience, I highly recommend renting a car as there are many things to do in Lifou and the island is big.

Although it is a French island, New Caledonia is in the Pacific, close to Australia and New Zealand .

Current status: all the words you could possibly associate with happy. It takes a while to get to this place for this view, a trek through a bit of jungle and a boat ride for a bit, a hop and a skip and a dip and then voila, heaven. The last time we were on this island was in 2013. The only thing that changed in ten years is my view of the world and that I got to show our children a beach where we used to play. The place, still as beautiful as ever. #lifou #southpacific #loyaltyislands #newcaledonia

Discover Secret Grottos on Loyalty Island Shore Excursions

You’ll learn how to truly unplug on Loyalty Island, where the realities of everyday life will be quickly replaced with relaxation and incredible Pacific Ocean vistas. The remote and undeveloped Loyalty Islands are French provinces within the archipelago of New Caledonia, and it’s shocking how truly secluded you’ll feel in this South Pacific paradise.

Loyalty Island cruise excursions are adventurous, active, and enjoyable for the entire family. If you’re looking for activities in the city of Lifou, you can buy souvenirs at the local open air market. Climb the Notre Dame de Lourdes Church for unbeatable views of the Pacific Ocean from the top, then reward yourself with a drink from a local coconut.

Take a tour of the local vanilla plantation, House of Vanilla while on Loyalty Island shore excursions. Each year, there’s a festival in October honoring the discovery of how locals in Lifou realized the climate was ideal for vanilla farming in the 19th century. Today, it’s one of the island’s biggest industries.

For a challenge, climb the black cliffs of Xodre or the coral stone Jokin Cliffs for the best views from the island. One of Lifou’s most popular attractions is swimming in a hidden, off-the-beaten-path grotto surrounded by tropical foliage. The path to the grotto is marked and helpful guides lead the way.

While you’re exploring, snorkel at Jinek Bay to see some of the best-maintained coral reefs in the world. You’ll see thousands of fish species underwater while you snorkel. Or, take a boat tour to the turquoise shoreline of Tiga Island, a nearly uninhabited area that a small population of native Kanaks call home. Organized tours often will drop you off at Luengoni Bay or the popular Peng Beach for crystal-clear swimming, too.

Loyalty Island shore excursions promise a personalized, intimate experience of the island. You could just break out the beach towel and soak up the sun, but why miss out on incredible off-the-beaten-path excursions during your South Pacific cruise from Australia ?

Sightseeing:

The commune of Lifou is made up of Lifou Island, the largest and most heavily populated of the Loyalty Islands, its smaller neighbor Tiga Island, and several uninhabited islets in between these two. All these islands lie among the Loyalty Islands, 190 km to the northeast of New Caledonia 's mainland.

Lifou is the largest coral atoll in the Loyalty archipelago. Lifou has the wonderful charm of an island that has managed to preserve its own traditional Kanak culture. You'll stand there awestruck in front of all of its breathtakingly beautiful views. Lifou is special in that it has a number of diversified landscapes; the northern coast of the island is made up of high, steep cliffs, whilst the southern side has pristine white sand beaches with stunning turquoise waters.

The walking paths and tracks, to the churches, beaches & lookouts are great, with some smooth roads and a few 'bumpy' uneven paths, so take good walking shoes, or wear your 'reef/aqua' shoes. The humidity makes it a bit of a hard slog, at times, but the subsequent views are well worth it. Make sure you take a bottle of water with you.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Close to where you get off the tender there is a large thatched-roof hut where a few locals will have items for sale. About 10m further from the water there is a tiny thatched-roof hut where the locals sell the tours. The tours are in cars and people-movers and go to the church, the village and the chief's hut. A stop is made near the water where there is a good view across to the ship. Cost about $15 pp

The snorkeling is very good over in the next bay about 10 mins easy walk and the water is much clearer if you go out a little way out from the other swimmers.

Travel across the island to see the dramatic cliffs of Jokin. Lifou Island is an ancient coral atoll that has become raised high above sea level over time. The towering cliffs once formed the walls of the island's barrier reef. Once the island's barrier reef walls, they offer dazzling views of Lifou's clear aquamarine water, vibrant fish population and the occasional whale.

New Caledonia is very expensive, since much of the food needs to be imported. There is no culture of bargaining either and attempting such might cause offense.

  • 2 hrs Estimate Duration

Discover how vanilla pods are cultivated and processed for export at a plantation and walk along a forest trail looking for Lifou’s fascinating wildlife. Although the vanilla orchid originated in Mexico, it flourishes in the Loyalty Islands, where it was introduced in 1850. You will watch the pods being prepared step by step and gain an understanding of the economic importance of vanilla, which is significant on Lifou. As you will see in the plantation’s gift shop, vanilla is readily infused into merchandise such as soaps, liqueurs and perfumes. Lifou is also known for its wildlife. Accompanied by a naturalist guide, you will meander through a forest where you may spot tropical birds, including endemic ones such as the New Caledonian cuckooshrike and two species of Lifou white-eye. The massive coconut crab is another creature commonly found in the forest. The name refers to its uncanny ability to crack open coconuts with its powerful pincers.

HIGHLIGHTS • Visit a vanilla plantation to see how this aromatic flavoring is derived from orchids. • Recognize how vanilla is used in products such as soaps, liqueurs and perfumes. • Follow a trail through the forest while looking for birds and enormous coconut crabs.

HELPFUL HINTS • Dress in weather-appropriate clothing. • Wear flat comfortable walking shoes.

A beach scene along the coast of Port Easo Lifou New Caledonia

Easo, Lifou, New Caledonia

Easo is the capital of Lifou, the largest and most populated of the Loyalty Islands. Home to around 10,000 Kanak people, it’s a simple, relatively undeveloped and largely unspoiled place, famed for two things: a sandy palm-fringed beach that fans out on either side of the main dock, and a very friendly atmosphere. Cruise ships are often welcomed to this island paradise with traditional tribal dances as well as a colorful local market that pops up to sell food, drinks and crafts. The island itself offers a diverse landscape that ranges from the steep cliffs of the northern coast to the pristine white-sand beaches and stunning turquoise waters along the southern coast. The island’s many walking paths and trails take in pretty churches—including the famous missionary chapel, the Chapelle Notre Dame de Lourdes—and pass scenic observation points, not to mention a wide variety of wildflowers and plants. Visitors can also tour vanilla plantations to learn about this venerable spice and its production, or make day trips to the nearby island of Tiga.
