Llama Walks
Available November through April
Join a lovely pack of llamas on a magical walking adventure at ShangriLlama Castle !
Begin your adventure inside the castle barn, where you will learn how to care for the llamas during your journey. Then, in groups of two or three people, you’ll meet the first llama your group will be walking with. Give your first llama a treat and take photos and selfies with him. Then, together with your llama, follow your guides to the Enchanted Forest Trail. During your Llama Walk, you will trade llamas with the other guests approximately every 10 minutes, until you have walked, photographed and fed all the llamas!
This 2-hour, unforgettable llama encounter costs $60 per person (plus a $3.60 processing fee). Tickets are changeable and refundable up to one week before your Llama Walk. No changes or refunds will be accepted for any reason after the one-week deadline. However, if the one-week deadline has passed, you may transfer your tickets to able-bodied adult friends, family, neighbors or colleagues to use at the Llama Walk you reserved.
If you have taken a Llama Walk with us before, please send an email to [email protected] to receive a $10 discount code for customer loyalty tickets.
You will experience what it’s like to walk among a pack of safe animals. You will observe how llamas communicate. You will find out that llamas have BIG personalities, and you will enjoy getting to know each llama.
Dress in comfortable clothing and walking shoes or boots for an enjoyable journey on an earthy mulch, gravel and dirt trail.
Arrive with your belongings in a small backpack or crossbody bag, so that your hands are always free to handle each llama’s reins. Please tighten the straps on your bag, so it doesn’t swing around and prevent you from jogging or running, if a llama picks up his pace. Thank you!
Llama Walks take place on most Saturdays and Sundays during the winter and early spring from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and sometimes from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. We also offer private Llama Walks on weekdays for groups of 12 to 18 people. Our season runs from November through April each year. Please click the Book Now button to see our up-to-the-minute Llama Walks calendar.
This unusual, two-hour adventure costs $60 per person (plus a $3.60 processing fee). Guests will walk in groups of two or three people per llama for the safety and comfort of the animals. Each group walks every llama!
All tickets are offered online via www.ShangriLlama.com. Please click the green Book Now button to be taken to the online calendar, where you may choose your date. When you check out, you will immediately receive an e-mail confirmation. One week prior to your Llama Walk, you will receive a reminder e-mail.
If your desired date is sold out, please join the online waiting list and check for any last-minute tickets posted on Thursdays and Fridays for the upcoming weekend. If you have your own group of 12 to 18 people, you can easily book a Llama Walk on a weekday.
You will walk ALL the llamas! Each llama will be accompanied by two or three people from the same party. Our llamas feel safest this way, and they are also protected from stealing plants off the trail. Approximately every 10 minutes, you will swap llamas with another pair or trio of guests with the assistance of two llama guides.
Yes! We offer private Llama Walks on weekdays at our regular rate of $60 per person (plus a $3.60 processing fee). A minimum of 12 people and a maximum of 18 people are needed to host a private Llama Walk. Participants will be grouped together, with up to three people per llama. Please contact llama@shangrillama with your proposed date. We’re happy to set up a private-group listing online, so that each of your guests can pay separately, if you’d prefer.
ShangriLlama will contact you at the earliest possible moment to reschedule your Llama Walk if a storm is heavily predicted, if trails are flooded, or if temperatures will drop to freezing—even though llamas love cold weather. Please track multiple weather reports for zip code 75189, as we will be doing. If you are visiting ShangriLlama from out of the area, we encourage you to make changeable hotel and flight reservations because of weather unpredictability. The closest hotels are the Holiday Inn Express in Royse City, and Rockwall’s SpringHill Suites by Marriott and Hilton.
Your total adventure will last 2 hours and cover around 2 miles. We do rely on each participant to complete their Llama Walk, so that each llama is accompanied by two or three people at all times.
Yes. Our insurance forbids us from admitting anyone less than 10 years old, especially infants, strollers and baby slings. The insurance company’s reasoning is understandable: It is too much responsibility for a child younger than 10 to prevent 300 and 400 pound llamas from stealing plants off the trail. Instead of a Llama Walk, we offer Llama Llessons for ages 4 and up.
Up to two minors may walk with one adult. The adult must hold onto the llama’s lead rope with the children. Children younger than 16 may not participate in a Llama Walk without a parent, guardian or friend. Each adult and each child attending a Llama Walk needs a separate admission ticket.
You may change or cancel your reservation up to one week in advance of your Llama Walk. No ticket changes or refunds will be offered after that time for any reason. But you may give your tickets to able-bodied, adult friends, relatives, colleagues or neighbors for the exact date and time you reserved.
You may cancel up to one week in advance of your Llama Walk for a full refund. If you cancel less than one week before your Llama Walk, then the amount you paid will not be refunded for any reason. However, you may transfer your tickets to able-bodied adult friends, relatives, neighbors or colleagues for use at the exact date and time you reserved.
Please know that almost all llamas in the world prefer to be admired but not petted! You will learn more about this oddity before you take the llamas on the trail.
No. Please do not arrive with pets in your car.
No. Llama Walks are an experiential activity providing an unusual opportunity to meet, observe and walk with a pack of llamas. So everyone who enters the barn or walks on the trail needs to purchase a ticket, out of fairness to the other guests who have purchased a ticket for this experience. Please note that we do not have a waiting area for individuals within a group who do not wish to participate in a Llama Walk.
ShangriLlama is honored to be chosen as a destination for celebrating birthdays, anniversaries and weddings. If you would like your special occasion to be announced during a Llama Walk, please leave a note for Mama Llama in the space provided on your registration form when you purchase your tickets.
ShangriLlama is located at a 10-acre private residence owned by the family that operates Llama Walks, Llama Llessons and weddings. For the privacy of this family and for the safety of their beautiful, pedigreed llamas, ShangriLlama’s address is only provided when a reservation is made. The property is gated, and the llamas are not visible from the street. All visitors require an advance reservation. We thank you for your understanding.

Definitely will use again. Fantastic trip and organisation
Absolutely excellent company from booking onwards. The trip was really well organised with really great suggestions when we booked it. The drivers and guides were fantastic. We were in Ecuador and the Galapagos. The Beagle was a great choice for us.

Incas and Conquistador (Machu Picchu), Iguazu Falls & Rio Aug 2019
We just returned from our holiday booked through Llama Travel. We booked Incas and Conquistadors Tour with a Rio and Iguazu Falls Extension. Llama Tours pre travel service (our consultant Tsehai) was exceptional with all our queries responded quickly and our bookings finalised without problems The service of their local agency in Peru (Condor Tours) cannot be faulted, making our holiday an experience to remember. Special mention to our very knowledgeable tour guide Jose Caparos, who was always prompt, courteous and patient with all our queries. We were happy with most of our accommodation, although maybe would have opted for and upgrade in Cusco, near the Town Square All flights booked by Llama were on time and we loved that their local agency checked us in and therefore made the airport part of the holiday relaxing Highly recommending Llama Travel and will definitely use them again if we travel back to South America

Costa Rica with Coeliac son
We have just returned from a fantastic trip to Costa Rica, organised by Llama Travel. The venues and hotels were outstanding. In particular one of the guides, Elyston Valentine was amazing and his knowledge on finding and naming wildlife was immense. For our package we landed in San Jose, where we stayed for 2 nights. Then travelled to Tortuguero, staying in Aninga Lodge for 2 nights; followed by Arenal Manoa for 3 nights; Villa Blanca cloud forest for 2 nights; finishing off with 5 nights at the Hotel Parador in Manuel Antonio (we added extra nights to the last stop to have little beach holiday at the end of our travels). We particularly enjoyed travelling and mixing with the other families choosing Llama travel. Aninga lodge in Tortuguero really encouraged us to chat and mix when it chose where you would be sitting for your meals and putting 2 or more families at the same table. This meant when we travelled to the next venue, we were all already chatting and sharing photos. The team at Llama were quick to respond to all my emails and questions. When we found out, after we had booked, that our son (aged 16) has coeliacs disease and can't have any gluten at all in his diet, they were happy to contact all the venues and ensure there were suitable food options available. Everywhere we stayed were really helpful with his diet and nothing was too much trouble. We have no hesitation in Llama Travel and hope to travel with them again soon.

Reply from Llama Travel
Hi Liz. Thank you for sharing your feedback. It's great to hear that you had such a good trip in Costa Rica, and that the guide, Elyston, was so helpful. We'd be delighted to help you plan any future trips Latin America, or anywhere else! Thanks. Luca.
Ride Llama on the Inca Trail
From the very beginning Llama Travel kept us up to date on our planned Inca Trail and all associated flights, hotel bookings and excursions. Throughout our holiday their associates in Peru [CondorTravel] were excellent with knowledgeable guides for day trips and a thoroughly prepared and completed 4 day Inca Trail. The holiday featured Lima hotels and excursion, Cusco hotel [before and after the trail] plus excursions, The 4 day Inca Trail with magnificent porters and guides and finally a relaxing time in Paracas, with transfers to and from Lima on 'Cruz Del Sur' plus two excursions. Timekeeping for every aspect of the arangements was spot on. Ride a Llama - you won't be disappointed.

This is the second time we have…
This is the second time we have travelled with Llama Travel and yet again they have provided an excellent service. Costa Rica was absolutely incredible (you all have to go) and the hotels, jungle lodges, itinerary, transfers and expert guides provided by llama travel enhanced our trip further. On our last few days the government closed the small airport down and so the guide and local Llama team quickly reacted, got us into a jeep and took us (through rivers) to another airport where we were able to fly to San Jose. The group of 20ish we travelled with were split into 2 small groups so our experiences always felt bespoke and everyone on the tour was like-minded and interested in exploring a new destination. We wouldn't hesitate to go back to Llama Travel for another holiday package.

Excellent as always
This was the 3rd holiday I have taken with LLama Travel and each has been a good experience. I have recommended the company to friends who have also had great holidays. This trip was complicated by a last minute change of my original travel date owing to family illness. LLama were really helpful in discussing with me and rearranging at very little extra cost. Guatemala and Costa Rica are beautiful countries to explore. The Mayan heritage in Guatemala is astounding and the wildlife in Costa Rica, superb. The local guides were well informed , enthusiastic and professional. Travel arrangements, transfers and internal travel went well, and I felt confident in the drivers. The only glitch was the return boat ride on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, which was VERY bumpy. I could not decide if it was the driver or the swell on the Lake, but either way the trip should come with a health warning! However, this did not detract from the holiday overall. I would certainly travel with LLama again.

In this difficult time of covid19
In this difficult time of covid19, Llama travel have kept us informed by email and phone. We should have been in Peru but were cancelled. At no time has it been difficult to access someone to talk to, the phone has been answered and the staff have been welcoming and ready to give answers. I hope to use them again as their service is second to none. They repaid all our money immediately. Well done!!!

SAMBA, TANGO and IGUASU FALLS
What an amazing trip! We found Llama via the web and so glad we did. They were so, professional, reliable and accommodating that our plans were quickly settled and we booked straight away. So very glad we did. The trip.took us to Buenos Aires, the falls and Rio, plus we took a side trip to Uruguay (highly recommended). We had guides when we needed them but it was so good to organise some things ourselves, we loved the flexibility. Everything worked so smoothly and there were far too many highlights to list them here. Thank you Llama, great service and great value: we shall be booking again.

Thank you Llama Travel
My Peru holiday departing May 10 booked with Llama Travel was cancelled due to corona virus but within a fortnight they had refunded the full cost of my holiday with exemplary speed and courtesy. I hope to rebook with LLama Travel in 2021.

Llama travel.. The best no doubt
It was our first tour holiday and I have to say it was fantastic. It was so nice to have a small group of people who by the way were all amazing. We are a family of three 2 adults and a 9 year old girl. I cannot recommend llama travel enough to other people as you were all amazing from the moment we submitted our enquiries, so supportive, patient, knowledgeable and organised. We initially selected your agency because we liked the itinerary which was a busy one and offered the opportunity to visit quite a few places. In Costa Rica the tour guides Jorge (from Swiss Travel ) and Fernando (from Pachira group) were out of this world, very knowledgeable (and not just the guide speech if not they had round knowledge well beyond of what you can expect - flora, fauna , geography, history, general stuff) polite, helpful and I could continue non stop. They understood the tourist needs and gave us invaluable tips to make our journey amazing up to the very minimal detail. Everything was organised up to the very minor detail and explained. Everyone made you feel wonderful. The partners you work with were amazing. Thank you Llama travel for the fabulous experience.

A Wonderful Peruvian Adventure!
The holiday was wonderful, with all connections smooth and hotels and trips excellent. We had the same guides for the time we were in the jungle and all around the sacred valley. They were knowledgable, friendly, helpful and enthusiastic which added significantly to what we got out of the holiday. The jungle lodge was fantastic and the Amazon trips were amazing, and Machu Picchu was magnificent. All the other incredible Inca structures around the Sacred Valley gave us some insight into their superb engineering and their ability to build in a way that fits into the spectacular natural landscape so beautifully. Lake Titicaca gave us a glimpse of different cultures and how it is possible to live different ways in the modern world. Thank you very much, it was fantastic!
Certainly use Llama Travel again!
We booked the Incas & Conquistadors+Jungle trip to Peru with Llama Travel, the first time we had used the company...and the holiday was brilliant. The customer service was excellent and logistics on the whole holiday was spot on. When a guide or representative stated a pick up time they were always there on time. The jungle experience was everything we wanted. We stopped at the Hacienda Concepcion. The food was excellent! We stopped in a Cabana which is open but covered in firm netting and we did not find one insect inside our accommodation which delighted my wife! The guides on ALL our tours were brilliant!! The village at the bottom of Machu Picchu is stunningly beautiful and Machu Picchu is...well breath taking! A good thing with this trip is you had an option to book a trip or have a free day. I am a bird watcher so we had two free days one in Lima, one in Cusco and booked a taxi from the hotel to some nature reserves which was great for us! So the holiday we booked with Llama Travel is an 11 out of 10. Great company!

Dear Martyn. I am delighted that you had such a great holiday and were able to go birdwatching. Peru really is excellent for birds. If we can help you with planning a holiday to another destination, please let us know. Luca.
Family holiday to Costa Rica
We have just returned home from an amazing family holiday to Costa Rica organised by Llama Travel. The local tour company was Swiss Travel and their guides, drivers and management of the tour was great. The overall tour was well planned and gave us a real flavour of the many various environments within Costa Rica - it was like having 5 holidays in 1! We were incredibly lucky to see amazing wildlife and welcomed by friendly people. Our guide Jorge was so friendly, approachable and knowledgeable and a fantastic representative of both Swiss Travel and Costa Rica! He ensured that our holiday ran smoothly, without delays and allowed time for bathroom breaks and stops to grab snacks etc, which was much appreciated with our 9 year old son. Jorge (and our driver Jorge!) were great with our son and the other little girl in the group and always listened to their questions and comments. His knowledge about the wildlife was outstanding and his enthusiasm was infectious. We would have no hesitation in recommending Llama Travel, Swiss Travel and Costa Rica to our friends and family and are so grateful that we have been able to experience such a beautiful country with such amazing wildlife. Thank you once again for delivering such an enjoyable, interesting and beautiful trip! Many thanks.

Peru tour with Llama
I booked my dream tour to go to Peru. Llama’s tour is so flexible with reasonable price. I looked forward to go. However, due to Coronavirus, our border were closed. It is still closed now. So we can not go. Llama is so generous that offer us full refund or 110% of the tour if we keep the booking for next year. They refund 90% of cost to be paid 3 months before the tour. They both were fantastic offers which was hard for me to choose. Finally, I chose the full refund. They had no hesitation and gave me 100% without any deductions. That gave me full confidence and trust of this company. Definitely, I will book with them for my next trip to South America. Their staffs are very helpful too.

Hi Rosanna, Thank you very much for reviewing us, we really appreciate it. We're sorry your dream holiday to Peru couldn't go ahead, but looking forward to helping you organise your next trip to South America. Best wishes, Hannah
Look no further Llama Travel are the Best!
Llama Travel in my opinion must be the very best travel company ever. I had wanted to visit Peru for over 30 years so I researched information about the country and the trips as thoroughly as I could. every part of the trip was wonderful. We did the 3 week trip which included the Amazon Rainforest, Machu Pichu, the Sacred Valley, Lake Titicaca, Colca Canyon, Arequipa and the Ballestos Islands. Please don't miss those as they are packed with bird life. Quite remarkable. The guides were so knowledgeable, thorough and kind. They were always on time and even came into the airports to ensure that we got our connection. Llama Travel were very helpful from the first phone call and very adaptable and truthful about the options they could offer. We didn't upgrade and the quality of the hotels was very good. The Incaterra lodge in the Sacred Valley and the one in the Amazon were superb. If I was lucky enough to do it again the only thing I would change would be to travel by train to Lake Titicaca from Cusco. We chose the bus to save money but I heard from people who travelled by train and I was quite envious.

Hi Val, What a lovely review to receive! We are so pleased that you had such a great time in Peru, and that you got to visit so many beautiful parts of the country. Hopefully we'll be able to help you organise your next holiday to Latin America or Africa! All the best, Hannah
Me and a friend had a trip to Peru in October 2019. Excellent service throughout and very well organised. The local tour guides were excellent and passionate, and the holiday itself was supremely easy

Perfect Holiday...... Llama were fantastic!
We've just returned from a two week Holiday to Peru arranged by Llama Travel and I can honestly say, we will never use anyone else for our South America Holidays. We did the 4D/3NT Inca Trail and then went on to the Amazon Jungle. Everything ran smoothly especially the airport transfers which I was concerned about. There was always a smiling face waiting to collect us at each destination and we were welcomed, offered advice on where to visit and transported in comfortable vans. We had 9 flights in total and having Llama organise the whole thing just made it so easy and relaxed. We mainly dealt with the ever helpful Gary. Now Gary was put through it with my many, many questions, numerous emails and he always responded promptly and put my mind at ease. He was a real gem and a true asset to Llama. Nothing was too much trouble including shuffling our trip details around to suit us. We were always kept up to date with any relevant information that we needed to know about without having to hassle them. Our tickets arrived in plenty of time, only ever were we in small groups (maximum of 7) and the knowledge of our guides whilst on our trip was fantastic! If you are considering booking with Llama Travel and want comfort, attention to detail, cracking customer service & a value for money, all round fantastic Holiday then honestly, don't hesitate. Just do it. We are currently planning on booking our next adventure to Costa Rica with them and cannot wait!

Excellent specialist for South American travel
We have travelled widely but never to South America and wanted good advice and good organisation for a special trip to include the Galapagos and Machu Picchu. We found Llama Travel online and were impressed by their customer feedback so made some enquiries and ended up with a superb tailor-made visit of three weeks. We found the Llama Travel staff, expert, efficient, helpful and patient, with a great problem-solving approach when the Galapagos boat we initially hoped to travel on was not available. The cost was significantly below the quotation from the big agent we often use. All the arrangements worked brilliantly, local reps all of high standard and appreciative of Llama custom, and we had a marvellous trip, surpassing our highest expectations.
Llama Travel were fantastic at helping…
Llama Travel were fantastic at helping us arrange our holiday to the Galapagos which unfortunately was stopped by covid! However, Llama Travel have been absolutely fantastic at keeping us informed and then speedily fully refunded our holiday as we are currently unable to commit to a future date. The way Llama Travel have stepped up to the mark and responded is exemplary. We will certainly rebook with them in the future. I have enjoyed excellent holidays with them in the past and the way they have put their clients interests first is remarkable given what one hears of other people experiences with other companies. Although disappointed not to be able to make the trip, which is totally understandable given the pandemic, I will feel even more confident travelling with Llama Travel in the future as I know they will make every effort to look after their clients if there were any problems. I can’t recommend them highly enough and would give them 10 stars if possible. Well done Llama Travel, you are a shining example of good practice in your industry.

Hi James, Thank you so much for this fantastic review. we are so grateful for your support and kind words. So sorry that you couldn't go to the Galapagos, but fingers crossed you will be able to in the future - it'll be worth the wait! We look forward to helping you plan your next trip to Latin America or Africa. Stay safe, Hannah

One of the very best holidays we have ever been on. The morning after return we booked another Llama Travel trip. Mr R, GB

Things that were great: The shuttle pick-ups were reliable and close to on-time. The places the tour took me were exactly where I wanted to go. The price was right. Things that were not great: The Kakchiquel hotel in Panajachel didn't have hot water and was not very clean (felt like a flophouse). The shuttle from Panajachel to Antigua stopped 30 minutes into the 2 hour ride because the driver got a phone call saying there were more passengers for him to take. We idled on the side of the road for 30 minutes waiting for these late passengers to be driven to where we were waiting. That was weird, and it delayed the whole bus load getting to Antigua.

Best of Guatemala 8 Days Tour
We had an excellent experience seeing Ecuador on the 8 day tour. This tour was a great immersion in the lesser visited cities and communities of the Ecuadorian Andes mountains. The trip was well organized and paced for our comfort and full of culturally meaningful experiences. We felt that our safety and interests were always the top priority. Our guide, Josue, was very experienced, friendly and spoke excellent English. We especially enjoyed Intinan, Cotopaxi, Chimborazo, Ingapirca, Pumapungo museum. Banos and Cuenca were our favorite cities: beautiful and walkable. We loved trying all the new foods, and I appreciated Josue's help with my Spanish.

Mayan Sun Southbound: Boat Rides & Ruins
Absolutely amazing experience. Very well thought out (except for couple of locations) and planned. Transportation in this route can be a nightmare. So it's a big plus to have that taken care of. G Adventure is amazing. CEO Suzy rocked. Great group of people, got along really well and made great connections. Some of the accommodations are too basic and couple of locations are not worth the journey. But the rest are just ????????????.

How a Family Cares for Llamas in Guatemala — and Teaches Climate Action
A family in Guatemala chose to keep llamas rather than sell them for meat. Two decades later, they teach tourists how to be more sustainable.

The highest mountain range in Guatemala is known for its uniquely cold and humid temperatures. La Sierra de los Cuchumatanes is unlike the rest of the country — a difficult region to farm. But it’s also one of the most biodiverse spots in the country, and where llamas, who thrive in a cold climate, can be found.
More than two decades ago, the residents of Todo Santos, a small town in Chiabal, Huehuetenango, came up with the idea of importing llamas from Chile. The cool temperatures of their village were closer to the Andean Mountain Range in South America rather than the rest of Guatemala. In Latin America, llamas are found in Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Chile — they need low temperatures to survive.
The residents brought 32 llamas from Chile to use as a means of transportation, to produce wool and sell their meat. The animals were distributed among different families of Todo Santos; to use however they saw fit. Marcos Cruz, 46, and his family received four of the llamas. A long-time animal lover, Cruz could not bear the thought of using the animals for any of these purposes — each struck him as exploitation. As a practitioner of the Mayan culture, Mam , “protecting and caring for animals is a priority for me and my family,” he explains in Spanish.
Cruz learned how to care for the llamas instead, and since he had experience with other animals, like sheep and horses, he realized what kind of maintenance they required to survive. “It was a challenge at first because coming from another country, for example, the grass they ate was not the same we have here, and we did not know when they were sick and how to react to their illnesses,” says Cruz.
Along with his family, he came up with an innovative idea: show tourists who visited Huehuetenango that llamas can live safely and unharmed in this area of Guatemala. It took several years for Cruz to transform his ranch into a tourist site where visitors can observe and learn about the animals. “Now, we show both locals and foreigners how we care for them, what they eat, how they are treated daily and most importantly, we let them interact with them. After all, they are animals only found in this part of the country, making their visit unique,” he says.
Cruz and his family currently have 13 adult llamas and three newborns. “We are proud to know how to reproduce and not misuse them. The other families that received the llamas abused and mistreated them, and this was miserable to witness,” Cruz says.
Huehuetenango is a region that, due to its cultural richness and Mayan legacy, is seen as significant by the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism , especially the way residents protect the environment, including the animals who live in its ecosystem . “Within our framework, our number one project is to promote sustainable tourism in Huehuetenango,” and this has everything to do with climate change, says Edy Chicas, Delegate of Huehuetenango for the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism.
Chicas works with the villagers, a very close-knit community, on a wide range of environmental issues, including dealing with waste, climate change and sustainable tourism. So far this year, the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism has given around fifteen talks to each village. “Our goal is to make sure that this tourist culture, composed of both the visitor and the person who receives the tourist, interacts with one another in the best possible way. By this, I mean that both parties are aware of the importance of keeping the tourist sites impeccable, so that their beauty is shown and its environment is maintained in excellent condition,” says Chicas.
There are programs aimed at forest governance, for instance. Some villagers have been reportedly cutting off the tree bark, which can be damaging not only to the tree, but the entire ecosystem. Through the training, villagers learn how essential it is to prevent this kind of damage, as well as other types of illegal logging, with sustainable forest management strategies. “This is a way to reduce climate change through the preservation of forests,” says Chicas.
Another example is a project used by the Cruz family to keep the village free from garbage. The characteristics that make plastic a durable material for humans also make it a danger to animals when left uncollected. “In some cases, we see farm animals try to eat the plastic,” says Cruz. “We visit the sites and do cleanup days where we bring rakes, brooms and garbage bags to clean the areas and teach villagers the importance of keeping these places intact,” says Chicas.
The villagers in turn teach tourists how to do their part to minimize their environmental impact. Community members make signs that say, “No littering, please. Leave it with your belongings.” During these campaigns, villagers collect large amounts of solid waste, separate and transport the waste to a treatment plant for final disposal. According to residents, the quantity of abandoned garbage has since decreased.
Maintaining the farm is of paramount importance to Cruz and his family, and Chicas sees this as a powerful form of . “Because tourists find it wonderful and desire to come back, we want to replicate this in all the tourist communities of Huehuetenango.” Chicas adds that for him, sustainable tourism creates what he refers to as responsible tourism, where a link is established between the visitor and the receiver, and where both are conscious of protecting the environment.
Cruz and his son have also learned to use different social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and Tik Tok to launch the Llamas de los Cuchumatanes Project , which shows how they give care to the llamas, and how they work to protect their surrounding environment.
“We like to show how this is a community initiative and a family project. We also want our audience to know that the llamas are well-maintained and that we keep the farm clean,” Cruz says. He explains that he wishes to encourage other families in his community who own llamas to care for them similarly, and avoid misusing them.
“The llamas are one of the main attractions of the La Sierra de los Cuchumatanes,” says Chicas. The Cruz family has been able to make the most of hosting the animals while treating them well. “The goal is to replicate their tourism strategy with other families from the village.”
“We are humble people with scarce resources who come from a tough socio-economic background. However, this does not stop us from protecting our land, animals and culture,” says Cruz. “We are family people and we like to interact as a community. For us it’s like having a child, a family member.” This piece has been updated.

Fabulous extended holiday to Central/Southern America.
Just returned from a fabulous extended holiday to Costa Rica, The Galapagos islands and Peru. Llama travel, Ben and colleagues, were fantastic in organising all that we wanted, linking three tours together seamlessly. All the transfers were punctual, professional, with very clean vehicles. All the hotels/lodges/boat (12) were wonderful, very comfortable. All excursions were led by local guides who were very knowledgeable, spoke good English and very friendly. We saw so much more than we would have done by ourselves. Thank you so much to Llama travel, we will certainly use you again.

Dear Chris. That's an amazing trip you took, visiting so many incredible places. It's lovely to hear that you enjoyed it and that Ben was so helpful. Let us know if you are interested in visiting any other parts of Latin America - or elsewhere! Luca.
Just returned from the Taj Tigers and…
Just returned from the Taj Tigers and Temples tour of India - absolutely amazing and worth each and every 5 stars! From my initial enquiry the booking with Llama was handled seamlessly. I questioned a few things prior to departure and Otto answered promptly and with the info I needed. He is also helping with a query I have had since returning. The tour itself was beyond my expectations- the guide Narinder was very knowledgeable, thoughtful, kind and looked after us through each stage of our tour. He even rejigged the itinerary on the very first day and managed with less than 24 hours for us as a group to attend the Holi festival which was an extra special added bonus. The majority of the hotels service was great - a couple of issues which were rectified by the staff with deepest apologies. We were also extremely lucky to see tigers in our additional safari, which I would recommend doing as the guides take you into different areas of the park. The safari included in the initial cost takes you into gate 1 which is the main tourist gate and it is very busy. We were a group of 10 with 2 additional travellers joining us who were staying at the upgrade hotel. As a group of 10 we socialised in the evening and got on very well. I hope to stay in touch. Travelling as two female friends in our 50’s we felt very safe in India. The people are so friendly and welcoming. I hope to return one day. Would definitely travel with llama again and would wholeheartedly recommend to friends and family. Thank you so much Llama travel for an exceptional holiday and service

Dear Karen. Thank you so much for your review. It's lovely to hear that you had a good holiday in India and in particular that Narinder was a great guide. If we can help you in future, please let us know. Luca.
Excellent service and brilliant local guides
We have used Llama 3 times now for long haul trips and we keep going back because the service from the staff in the UK is always very friendly and helpful (thanks Otto!) and because the local tour guides we’ve had have all been first class; very knowledgeable and personable. We also really like travelling round in a small group and the tours always include days that you can spend doing your own thing. We highly recommend Llama and will always go back to them for similar trips.

Just returned from Angkor Wat and…
Just returned from Angkor Wat and Vietnam North & South. We had a fabulous holiday, from contacting Llama Travel to departure, everything was well organised (hats off to Otto at Llama who helped accommodate us with flights to Singapore, since we wanted to visit there outside of our holiday itinerary). He was professional and prompt, and made making the arrangements easy and pleasant. The whole trip was excellent, a good balance of places to visit, without spending too much time in any one place. The local tour guides were all superb, and made our trips stress free and very enjoyable. All the hotels were very good (some being excellent). We particularly like Llama's use of small group tours: we began with a group of 6, which eventually maxed out at 10 people. The advantage is that you get to know people well, and the tours feel much more intimate. Overall we loved Cambodia and Vietnam, especially the people, who are very friendly and accommodating. We highly rate this trip and, having been with Llama before, we will be booking with them in future.

Just back from Costa Rica
Just back from Costa Rica. From first to last Llama have been outstanding. Great service. Wonderful holiday. Everything was seamless and excellent. I could provide oodles of detail, but sufficient to say, don't bother considering alternatives. For great service and terrific value, I doubt that you can better Llama. Recommended without reservation.

Jewels of Jordan
Our second trip with Llama Travel and certainly won’t be our last. Everything extremely well organised with excellent accommodation and good food. Our group of 20 was split into two smaller groups of ten and transported in comfortable minibuses with complimentary water. Same guide and driver for the whole trip and both did a great job. Our guide Mo was helpful, friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. He really enhanced our enjoyment of the trip. Petra was always going to be the main event and didn’t disappoint, but the other sights and scenery were also impressive. We particularly enjoyed visiting Mount Nebo (despite the fierce wind!) and loved hiking in the Dana Nature Reserve. Would liked to have had an overnight stay there. The desert scenery was fantastic but was a little disappointed with the jeep safari. It lasted less time than advertised and we didn’t venture very far. However, we had a wonderful trip overall. Jordan is a very safe and welcoming country and Llama Travel a great company to see it with.

Dear Mandy. Thank you for your review. It's lovely to hear that you had a great trip in Jordan. Thanks especially for your comments regarding the desert jeep safari. We will review this to make sure this is addressed for future trips. We would love to help you arrange another trip in future, so please let us know when you are next planning. Luca.
Llama Travel Cape Town and the Garden…
Llama Travel Cape Town and the Garden Route plus Victoria Falls. Trip was in January/February 2024 Unable to fault Llama on the level of service and attention when we booked this holiday. Did not have any problems with the hotels, guides, or drivers. Llama offer an upgrade package for the hotels on this trip, in my opinion it is not worth doing, we were 9 couples and one couple did take the upgrade and missed out on a lot of socialising, the hotels on the basic package met all of our needs and we would happily stay in any of them again. Suggest that you do not take the flight that gets into Cape Town very early in the morning, I think it came in about 4AM. The first hotel which is the Sun Square City Bowl does not allow check in until 4PM, some of our group had to wait about 10 hours to get into there room. Since Llama published the details of the holiday Zimbabwe has increased the cost of the visa for entry from $50 to $55 per person. It was not difficult to get the visa at the airport just time consuming.
Date of experience : 01 February 2024
Hi Tim, thanks for the review! We're glad you had a good time in South Africa. We appreciate your feedback on the hotel upgrades, and will take these points into consideration. - Josh
Llama travel had everything covered!!!!
Just got back from the extended Botswana mobile safari taking in Cape town and Zimbabwe. From the minute we arrived at Manchester airport, absolutely everything was sorted out for us by llama. We didn't have to do anything ourselves and everything ran so smoothly with absolutely no stress which meant we could relax and enjoy our trip. I can't recommend llama travel enough for the experience we had. We will definitely be booking with them again

Peruvian Adventure!
Llama Travel organised our 3 week Peruvian adventure and we were impressed by the amount of detail they went into to ensure it was a holiday to remember. Our itinerary was customised to our needs and all our questions were answered quickly and completely. They work with a highly skilled and professional tour company in Peru (Condor Travel) and everything is again planned with military precision. A holiday to remember. Well done and many thanks.

A Passage Through Mexico
My trip to Mexico was simply amazing. Had a minor hiccup early on as my baggage didn’t arrive on air Canada flight, so I was stressed but Luca and his team in Mexico were constantly in touch to help me. All thanks to Luca and Kathya, got my luggage back in time. After that, it was just flawless trip, amazing locations. Especially sumidero canyon, palenque, yaxilan temples. Knowledgeable guides, and on time service. Seeing Mayan sites was a dream come true. A memorable trip indeed. Defo plan to visit South America again with Llama. Thank you!!

We had a fantastic tour of Peru. Every part was very well organised and the guides and drivers were friendly, helpful and informative. We enjoyed our tours in the Amazon rainforest, around the towns and cities,up to Machu Picchu, across the Andes to lake Titicaca and on to Colca Canyon. All the views were amazing as was the sight of 10 Condors flying above us and into the canyon. Every part of this holiday was wonderful and I reccomended it to all my friends on our return.

Hi Elaine, thanks for this review! We're so glad you enjoyed your time in Peru, and would be more than happy to assist you with any future holidays. Best, Josh
What a great tour to Jordan. The groups were kept small by using 2 mini busses to transport us, the guides and company that act as agents in Jordan were great and the itinery was day after day of " wow factor" sights and experiences. We had been told about Llama by fellow guests on other tours with different companies, and this was our first time with them. It cetainly wont be our last. Thay have been excellent from the time of our initial enquiry.

Travelled to Equador and Galapagos…
Travelled to Equador and Galapagos Islands with Llama Travel in May. The holiday itself was absolutely the best trip of a lifetime and not only lived up to expectations but exceeded it. Llama themselves were so easy to deal with and all parts of the trip ran extremely smoothly. We were able to alter the itinerary easily and all staff gave great advice re choices and experiences to have. We've already looked at booking with them again next year for Costa Rica, can't praise them enough!
Date of experience : 30 June 2022
Hello James, thank you for your great review. We would be happy to help you plan your Costa Rica adventure! Kind regards, Paige.
Peru and Rio for 3 weeks.
They delivered on the trip but 2 weeks before flying out they informed us that, the optional excursion which we paid for happened to fall on a bank holiday which means that the excursion wont be available on that day. However they did change the flights to try to accommodate the excursion on a different day. We felt that given they are a professional tour company, they should have been aware that day is a bank holiday when we first book the tour. Otherwise everything else run smoothly and we totally enjoyed our trip in Peru and Rio. Peru is a big country and if you wish to see lots of places there is a lot of flying between places, also the local flights are not very reliable, out of 4 flights there were 2 delays. People in Peru were nice and friendly. It is a place we may go back in the future.

O.M.G.! Honestly the most wholesome experience. It was my second time climbing the Acatenango and I could not have wished for a better tour operator. From beginning to end I felt in such good hands. It is a challenging hike but so worth it. And because of our professional guide, the comfortable and beautiful (!!!) cabins & the great food we've had, I can only recommend this operator to literally everyone. Do it!!!
The best operator for the volcano hike!
Wonderful experience! Everything is super well organized by a motivated team. From good food to a range of material that you can borrow. After a tough, but beautiful trip you arrive at the well-kept mountain hut. Magnificent to get from your bed to the erupting volcano! Lava Trails is an absolute must!!
Everything is super well organized by a motivated team.
YOU HAVE TO DO THIS!! I’ve had such an incredible trip with Lava Trails. The guide was super knowledgeable, food was superb, but nothing tops the jaw-dropping views you get from the camp and your bed at the top! Truly something unique that you cannot miss out on when you are in Guatemala! Highly recommend!
Nothing tops the jaw-dropping views you get from your bed!
I cannot describe how amazing my experience with Lava Trails was!! The views of the volcano are unmatched from the cabins. And if you are not very prepared to climb the volcano, the Lava trails team can lend you everything you need. They also gave us 3 meals, snacks, tea and wine. And the very cozy cabins did not get cold and incredible views. Without a doubt I will live this experience again with Lava Trails.
The views of the volcano are unmatched from the cabins.
Wow! The Lava Trails cabañas really are on another level! From your bed you have an excellent view of the Fuego volcano while you are nice and warm in your own sleeping bag on the mattress. Everything was arranged down to the last detail and the food was top notch. Highly recommended!!
The Lava Trails cabañas really are on another level!
You will not find a more beautiful and better accommodation on the volcano! The beds are comfortable and from bed you have the most amazing view of the volcano. In addition, the guide spoke very good English and the crew did everything they could to ensure that everyone had an unforgettable stay. In short: a 10/10 experience! I would recommend this to all my friends.
From bed you have the most amazing view of the volcano.
I have hiked Acatenango a total of 5 times and this experience with Lava Trails beat every one of those times. The cabins are another level - I truly enjoyed being inside warming up and chatting with my friends while having a floor to ceiling window view of the erupting volcano! Even during the night, there was no need for me to get out of my bed to see and experience Volcan de Fuego do its show. Definitely recommend it - there is nothing like it on Acatenango.
Definitely recommend it - there is nothing like it!

About Volcán de Pacaya
Pacaya Volcano, known locally as Volcán de Pacaya, is an active complex volcano located in Pacaya National Park about an hour south of Antigua. Pacaya is the quintessential storybook volcano with a continuous plume of smoke drifting from its summit and a massive dried lava field forming the valley at the base of its caldera.
While Volcán de Pacaya may not be Guatemala’s highest peak at 8,370 ft (2,552 m) its slopes and unique landscapes are certainly some of the most impressive volcanic landscapes in all of Central America.
Pacaya Volcano Hiking Tours and Adventure Packages
OTO offers Pacaya hiking tours as day trips or overnights. Overnight is highly recommended if Pacaya is particularly active, as there is nothing like seeing active lava flows glow against the night sky. We also offer a Mountains to Sea extension tour which combines the summit of Pacaya with a trip down to the surf beach of El Paredon to relax sore muscles and take a surf lesson.
Pacaya Volcano Highlights:
- See one of Guatemala’s main tourist attractions away from the crowds
- Roast marshmallows above volcanic heat vents
- Walk across thousands of years old dried lava flows, and through lush forests and farmland
- Enjoy a fresh picnic lunch below the smoking cinder cone in a barren land of lava rock
- See views of nearby towering volcanoes, and even to the Pacific coast
- Take a spa option and spend time after the hike soothing your sore muscles with a massage, hydrotherapy, and thermal pools heated by the volcanic activity of Pacaya!
Today was my birthday, and hiking Pacaya was absolutely amazing. I can’t say enough positive things about our entire experience. The service was phenomenal (hiking an active volcano!!!) the guides were so knowledgeable, safety-conscious, and incredibly nice. The lunch was scrumptious, and my dietary restrictions were taken into account. The guides even produced a birthday pastry, candles, and sang happy birthday. Thank you Mimi, Tami, Mike, Marco, Josias, and Edwin. Today was a highlight in my life, and Old Town Outfitters made it happen.
Yes. In fact, Pacaya has been pretty consistently active over the last decade and has recently become more active. Since March 2021, scientists have recorded an increase in incandescent explosions and ash emissions. Learn more about the status of Pacaya and Pacaya’s volcanic eruptions at Smithsonian Institution’s Global Volcanism Program .
2021. Towards the end of March 2021, Pacaya experienced strong eruptions spewing rivers of lava and ash clouds. While the lava flows did threaten nearby towns, there was little damage. This recent activity has created very unique opportunities to get very very close to the flows.
OTO takes safety very seriously. We follow all local and national laws and regulations as to whether or not we can safely climb any mountain. Specifically, we follow the guidance provided by INSIVUMEH , a government agency that monitors area volcanic and seismic activity in order to inform and protect the public.
We also have ways of viewing the volcano at a safe distance if officials temporarily close the park. OTO has access to a few private farms across the valley from Pacaya where we can camp, see the lava flows and have an enjoyable experience from a very safe distance.
The volcano has erupted at least 23 times since the 1500s. In 1961, Pacaya began erupting vigorously and has been erupting frequently since then.

The highest mountain range in Guatemala is known for its uniquely cold and humid temperatures. La Sierra de los Cuchumatanes is unlike the rest of the country — a difficult region to farm. But it's also one of the most biodiverse spots in the country, and where llamas, who thrive in a cold climate, can be found.

We particularly like Llama's use of small group tours: we began with a group of 6, which eventually maxed out at 10 people. The advantage is that you get to know people well, and the tours feel much more intimate. Overall we loved Cambodia and Vietnam, especially the people, who are very friendly and accommodating.
