28 Epic Things To Do In Melbourne, Florida in 2024

Amy

When most people think of the Space Coast , they think of Cocoa Beach , but its southern neighbor Melbourne is equally worthy of your time. This coastal city is home to some of the most beautiful Florida beaches and a couple of unique downtowns. After living here for ten years, I have a lot to share about things to do in Melbourne, Florida

If you are in Orlando or West Palm and looking for a day trip, Melbourne is one of the best places to go. Cocoa Beach and Titusville might have the popular Kennedy Space Center attraction and waterfront restaurants , but Melbourne is perfect for exploring. Here is my take on all the best things to do in Melbourne, Florida.

Nature Things To Do In Melbourne, Florida

I find this to be the less touristy area of the Space Coast, and because of this, there is a lot more natural to see. Here are seven nature things to do in Melbourne, Florida that I recommend doing.

1. Kayak through the Giraffe Enclosure at the Brevard Zoo

The Brevard Zoo is probably the best-known attraction in the area. I think it’s one of the most unique zoos around and there’s a lot you can do here for any age!

Some of my favorites are feeding the giraffes, kayaking through the enclosure, and doing a kangaroo walkabout! There are a lot of hands-on exhibits and even a swimming pool as well! Those seeking extra thrills can try the Treetop Trek, which includes climbing and zip-lining. If you are local, you may want to consider the annual pass so that you can try everything they have to offer!

2. See Nesting Turtles on a Turtle Walk

Every summer, hundreds of turtles come to the beaches of Brevard County to lay their eggs. If you are here from June through August at night, you may get a chance to see them! The Sea Turtle Preservation Society hosts turtle walks where you can learn all about the turtles and get a few glimpses of them. If you are especially lucky, you might see some sea turtles hatch! I have still yet to experience that in person, but I have seen a few hatchlings.

3. Look For Dolphins on a SUP Eco Adventure

One of my favorite things to do in Melbourne, Florida is paddleboard. If you have done it before, it is pretty easy to rent a board and take it on the ocean or intercoastal. However, I think it is the most fun to take an eco-tour, especially if you haven’t been before!

I went on a SUP Eco Adventure at Honest John’s Fish Camp a few years ago and still have wonderful memories of it. We saw a few dolphins and learned a lot about the area from the two tour guides. Whether you are visiting or a local, everyone should take this tour once!

4. Take a Scenic Hike Through Turkey Creek Sanctuary

If you like hiking, there are half a dozen excellent trails here. In fact, one of my favorite free things to do in Melbourne, FL is visit Turkey Creek Sanctuary where you can walk two miles on the boardwalk. There are so many cool things to see here including manatees, alligators, and birds. There also is a butterfly garden at the beginning, where you can enjoy the peaceful scenery.

5. Go To The Beach

Obviously, you will want to spend some time at the beach while you are here! The beachside is broken up into multiple different towns, but for the purposes of this post, I will consider everything from Sebastian Inlet to Patrick Air Force Base part of Melbourne.

For quiet and tranquil beaches, I recommend going south. Coconut Point Park and Juan Ponce de Leon Landing beach are both hidden gems in Melbourne, Florida with free parking and bathrooms.

For a beach park with a few more amenities, Spessard Holland and Paradise Park are good options with free parking. Spessard Holland has a surprisingly good food stand called Billie’s. Paradise usually has a food truck as well, in addition to a playground and volleyball courts.

A lot of people like James H. Nance Park in Indialantic, but it’s the only place where you have to pay for parking. If you want to take your dog to the beach , Canova Beach is the only dog-friendly beach in Melbourne.

As you go north, I prefer going all the way to Patrick Air Force Base and going to a secluded beach. 2nd Light and Hangar’s beach are both very quiet, although they do not even have restrooms. Other public beaches that have restroom facilities on the north side are Hightower Beach and Pelican Beach. I have to say, I usually prefer the south, because the northern beaches in Melbourne, Florida have some rocks.

6. Bike Through The Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands

Even though the beach is the main nature attraction here, the wetlands are another biologically diverse spot worth exploring. The Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands is a 200-acre spot home to many birds, gators, and other creatures. You can drive around, but I prefer to take a leisurely bike ride or even a walkthrough.

7. Go Fishing At Sebastian Inlet

The Sebastian Inlet State Park is a beautiful spot just south of Melbourne with all sorts of ways to explore. You can wade in the inlet, check out the museum, or even camp here! If you want to go fishing somewhere in Melbourne though, this is one of the best spots. There are two long jetties that are perfect for fishing or just admiring the views. Make sure to get a saltwater fishing license before you go!

Active Things To Do In Melbourne Florida

With such beautiful weather most of the year, it’s no surprise that there are plenty of activities to do. A lot of these involve nature, while also breaking a bit of a sweat. Here are my favorite active things to do in Melbourne, Florida.

1. See the Water Glow in the Dark on a Bioluminescence Tour

I’ve talked a lot on the blog about how the Space Coast is one of the few places in the world you can experience bioluminescence . For optimal results, you should probably head up to Titusville to see it, but there are a few spots in Melbourne to find it too.

We took a tour with Paddling Paradise once and went to Satellite Beach to paddleboard through bioluminescence. It was a bit fainter there, but still noticeable! It depends on the time of year, so if you get the chance in Melbourne, definitely take it!

2. Play a Game of Golf By The Ocean

There are a lot of places to golf on the Space Coast, but Spessard Holland is my favorite course. It’s in Melbourne Beach and you get beautiful coastal views! If you prefer mini-golf, there are only a few places around here, with Andretti in Palm Bay and Lighthouse Cove in Cocoa Beach being the main choices.

3. Do Yoga On The Beach Or At A Brewery

For an extra peaceful yogi experience, head to the beach Saturday’s at 8 AM for practice there. There is usually one going on at the James Nance beach and it is donation-based. Check out this page to make sure it’s happening!

Melbourne is actually a big yogi town, so there are other cool places to do yoga here too! The Yoga Garden is a super relaxing spot in EGAD, but I especially enjoy Namaste for One More every Sunday at Intracoastal Brewery .

4. Take An Airboat Ride through the Swamp

Believe it or not, you do not have to go to the Everglades to see gators from an airboat! If you go just west of Melbourne, you can experience a true Florida swamp. There are a few places you can get an airboat ride including Camp Holly, Airboat Rides Melbourne, and Swamp Donkey. They offer daytime tours, sunset tours, and even night ones where you get a headlamp to look for creatures!

5. Go Zip Lining, Go-Karting, and Take a Ropes Course at Adrenaline Warehouse

This is probably one of the best things to do in Melbourne, Florida when it is raining. There are only a handful of indoor activities in Melbourne , so head to Adrenaline Warehouse for all the excitement you could want indoors. They offer go-karting, zip-lining, laser tag, a ropes course, and an arcade. All ages will have a blast here!

6. Explore a Nature Trail

In addition to the picturesque wetlands mentioned above, there are a couple of other natural areas in Melbourne good for hiking. The Turkey Creek Sanctuary is probably the most well-known one and there are about two miles of trails to check out. In addition to birding, you might see some manatees, gators, and tortoises.

For a beachside home, check out Coconut Point Sanctuary which is about a mile long trail. There is also Erna Nixon Park which has an elevated boardwalk through the forest. Occasionally, they have a moonlight stroll here complete with live music and surrounded by live oaks.

7. Go For a Run at a Brewery

Running is another sport that is pretty popular around here. There are weekly running clubs almost every day of the week! Currently, you can go to Oars and Paddles Sunday mornings, Long Doggers Indialantic on Monday nights, Hell ‘n Blazes on Tuesday nights, and Intracoastal Brewing on Wednesday nights. Check out Space Coast runners for more info on these group runs. They are always a great way to run with a group and often get a beer after!

If you like races, we have plenty of those too. The Running Zone has a fun series of 5ks, including the Ghostly Gecko and the Run for the Gecko. Other races I don’t miss include the Turtle Krawl 5K and the Eye of the Dragon 10k. Here’s a list of upcoming events so you can start training for one!

8. Go Bowling

This isn’t the most exciting thing on the list, but I did want to include bowling in case you are looking for something else on a rainy day. You can go to either Shore Lanes or Bowlero for a few hours of bowling and drinks!

Cultural and Artsy Things to do in Melbourne, Florida

Despite not being a bit city, there’s still a big appreciation for art and history in Melbourne. Though we do not have a ton of museums, you can learn a lot about Florida and more! For an authentic Melbourne experience, check out some of these artsy or cultural things to do in Melbourne, Florida.

1. Take a Mural Art Tour through The Eau Gallie Arts District

If you like art, the Eau Gallie Arts District is the number one place to go! Not only do they have a variety of colorful and creative murals, but there are also art galleries and creative shops. I love coming here to walk around, admire the murals and galleries and then grab a drink at one of the many bars here!

2. Explore The Historic Rossetter House Museum

Close by to the Eau Gallie Arts District, you can visit a historical museum. The Rossetter House has been around since 1908 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built by a family with a long Florida legacy. You can tour this historic house for $8 and find out more about what life was like 100 years ago in Melbourne, Florida.

3. Check Out the Shops and Restaurants in Downtown Melbourne

Downtown Melbourne is another historical spot in town that also has a lot going on now. You can come here for shopping and dining or enjoy a romantic stroll by the harbor and riverside. Other sites to check out include the Henegar Center built in 1919, the Green Gables House, and even Hell ‘n Blazes brewery. This brewery is located in a building that burnt down multiple times before turning into a bank! They left the old bank vault for a little slice of history.

4. See A Show At The King Center

Over by the community college, EFSC, you can enjoy concerts, plays, and more at the King Center. This venue being so small is actually a perk because you get such an intimate experience. I never expected to be so close to the stage at a Ben Folds concert when he came to this venue a few years ago! Keep an eye out for bands or comedians you love, because seeing them here is an amazing experience.

5. Paint Pottery or A Canvas

If you want to bring out your artsy side, I recommend painting pottery or a canvas in Downtown Melbourne. Get Fired Up is a spot where you can pick some kind of pottery, whether it be a mug or a statue, and paint it however you like. Then the studio will glaze and fire it for you! I have always enjoyed doing this in the past and have been surprised by how well some of the pieces come out.

You can also try painting a canvas at Painting with a Twist, where an instructor guides you through creating a wall-worthy piece of art. Check out the calendar for special theme nights! There’s also Create It!, a studio where you can make your own wooden signs. Instructors are on hand here to help your creativity flourish.

6. Taste Some Beer Or Spirits

There are four different Melbourne, Florida breweries and nine in the Brevard County area. You can grab a flight at any of them and try a few different kinds of beers. Check out my post here to figure out which on to visit!

There are also some great places to experience a guided tasting. The Mansion is one of my favorites. This restaurant also has a cellar where they feature weekly tastings of different spirits and wines. It’s a great way to find out what you like to drink and snack a little too!

7. Take A Cooking Class

For those wanting a cooking experience or just a fun, food-centric night, The Gathering Table offers a variety of cooking classes. Options range from a Night in Tuscany, where you make gnocchi and saltimbocca, to family class, where kids can join in. These trained instructors will teach you how to make delicious food and relax in the kitchen! The best part is the class ends with a meal of the food you made!

Melbourne, Florida Festivals To Experience

In Melbourne, it’s a rare weekend that there’s not some sort of event going on! In addition to First Fridays in the downtowns and weekly farmers markets, there are also quite a few festivals for whatever you are interested in. Here are some of the ones I mark my calendar for every year.

Downtown Melbourne Food and Wine Festival – Mid-November Annually

The Melbourne Food and Wine Festival is the biggest gathering of Brevard county restaurants and bars in the area where you can taste all the food and drinks you want! Every November, you can attend this foodie fest and pay one price for unlimited tastings. The event does get crowded, but it’s a great opportunity to try a lot of local restaurants.

The Rocky Water Brew Fest – Mid-October Annually

If you like craft beer, this is the perfect festival to attend! The Rocky Water Brew Fest happens every October and hosts dozens of breweries from around the state. Not only can you try the local ones, but you can also try some of the best Tampa and Orlando breweries here as well.

IMG 0634 2

Melbourne Art Festival – End of April Annually

To see Downtown Melbourne come alive with art and creativity, you have to visit the Melbourne Art Festival. I love seeing all the different vendor displays of all kinds of art. This free event also includes live music, workshops, a 5k, and food vendors. It’s a great way to support the local community of talented artists and have fun too!

Whiskey in the District – Beginning of February Annually

EGAD also hosts the yearly Whiskey in the District event, where attendees are treated to a variety of rare whiskies and bourbons. This is the best opportunity to try bottles that you might not find in stores. There’s also food and entertainment included in the ticket. It’s a great way to start the year for whiskey lovers!

Botanical Festival – Beginning of March Annually

Another free festival that Downtown Melbourne hosts is the Botanical Fest. This free event is the ultimate place to view and buy a variety of plants, flowers, and more. We usually pick up a few flowers every year and even splurged for a monstera plant this past festival! It is sure to bring out the green thumb in anyone.

Know Before You Go: Things to do in Melbourne, Florida

Brevard County may not be the most well-known area in the state, but there is no shortage of fun things to do in Melbourne, Florida. For locals, I hope this guide helped you find something new to do in your town! For those on vacation, I recommend spending some time at the beach and doing at least a couple of nature or active activities on this list. I also urge you to spend some time at night in either Downtown Melbourne or EGAD and check out the restaurants and bars there! Here are a few other things to keep in mind for your time in Melbourne.

  • The best time to visit Melbourne, Florida is November through May. The summers are very hot and you risk having to deal with a hurricane in the early fall.
  • There is an airport here that Delta, American Airlines, and a few others fly out of. I prefer to fly to Orlando airport and make the hour-long drive because the prices are better.
  • If you are visiting the area, I highly recommend renting a car. Its a large area, and though you can use Lyft/Uber, a rental car is probably cheaper
  • There is not a lot of nightlife here, besides Downtown Melbourne. It’s much more of a relaxing town! You can find live music at a lot of bars though.
  • If you are looking for a hotel, my favorite hotel is Hotel Melby . It is right in the center of downtown and close to all the best things to do in Melbourne, Florida

Stop by the Rossetter House Museum & Gardens

One of the more educational things to do in Melbourne, the Rossetter House Museum and Gardens are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, the home celebrates Florida’s history and those who made it home in the late nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries.

The Rossetter Family arrived in Eau Gallie in 1902 and were typical of other Florida pioneer families. Six years later, the Rossetter House was built.

The family became leading merchants in the fishing industry and agents for the Standard Oil Company.

Now that the family’s history and home have been preserved forever, guests can tour the Rossetter House, the Houston Family Cemetary, and the Rossetter Gardens.

Locals can also reserve the gardens and home for private functions like weddings and bridal showers.

This is a cultural hub for Melbourne, and you’ll always find something on their events calendar no matter when you visit.

EGAD pretty much has everything you could want: some of the best spas in Florida, hair salons, an improv studio, kava bars, floral arrangers, marble retailers, and even a tattoo parlor!

Stroll the Florida Tech Botanical Gardens

Melbourne is home to the Florida Institute of Technology, a destination for STEM students around the state.

Here you’ll also find one of the most beautiful things to do in Melbourne for couples, the Florida Tech Botanical Gardens.

Spanning over 15 acres, the Botanical Gardens have become one of the most unique campus botanical gardens of its kind in the continental United States.

A stream bordered by shady hammocks of palm trees winds through the heart of the entire campus.

As you walk along the Dent Smith Trail, you’ll see palm trees emerging from the stream, butterflies fluttering to and fro, native Florida flowers, and even a separate bamboo trail.

Stick to the trail though, there are many poisonous plants in the garden and hammock.

Don’t forget to seek out Melbourne’s Little Red Schoolhouse, found in the middle of the gardens.

Built and painted in 1883 by John Goode, students sat on benches, and there was a hand-operated pump outside.

You will agree this is one of the best botanical gardens in Florida !

Learn at the Kennedy Space Center

Did you know that the most well-known NASA base makes its home in Florida?

The Kennedy Space Center, one of the best museums in Florida , lies on Merritt Island in Cape Canaveral, making it the  ultimate day trip from Orlando !

As one of the best things to do in Melbourne, Florida, this is where you can watch the space shuttle launches!

In addition to housing a stunning collection, the grounds are also home to the Merritt Island National Wildlife Reserve, one of the best parks in Florida.

During your time at the museum, check out the Astronaut Training Simulators where you can go inside the Atlantis Space Shuttle.

Then, see replicas of the Mars Rover and test your skills as a recruit! Afterward, check out the U.S. Astronauts Hall of Fame where space explorers are remembered!

Before you leave, make a point to stop at the Space Mirror Memorial. Because it is covered in mirrors, the 24 names of astronauts lost to space emblazoned in black granite are constantly illuminated.

Above all, it serves as a sobering reminder that space exploration can sometimes require the ultimate sacrifice.

Because the sheer number of exhibits to see is overwhelming, the Kennedy Space Center has put together a  suggested itinerary ! However, you can also find an option to customize your own itinerary!

The Kennedy Space Center is open to guests daily from 10 AM – 4 PM.

A space suit hangs over the crowds as they pass through the exhibits of the Kennedy Space Center.

Find Culture at the Foosaner Art Museum

Also found in the Florida Institute of Technology, the Foosaner Art Museum can be found right on the edge of the Indian River in the Eau Gallie Arts District.

Not only is it one of the best museums in Florida, but it is also one of the best Melbourne activities.

The Foosaner describes itself as a gathering place, a catalyst for change, and a center for creativity.

The curators and staff collect, display, and interpret all forms of the visual arts as they relate to the past, the present, and the future.

With rotating displays and exhibits, you’ll never find the same thing twice upon a visit to the Foosaner. Past exhibits can be viewed digitally online!

Admission to the Foosaner Art Museum is free. The museum is open from Wednesday through Saturday from 10 AM – 4 PM.

Find Wildlife at Manatee Cove Park

Fishermen and nature lovers, rejoice! Manatee Cove Park is one of the best things to do in Melbourne. Here you’ll find a place to observe manatees and fish to your heart’s content in a protected cove.

Manatee Cove Park spans just under 30 acres. One of the most beautiful places in Brevard County, this community river park affords nature lovers a perfect place to enjoy a relaxing day in the sun.

Right at the access to the park, you’ll find the Manatee Cove 4-H Equestrian Arena. But it’s not just about horses here. You can also take classes to learn about dog ownership and breeds as well as sharp-shooting and archery!

The access road then leads to a small lagoon that offers a protected refuge for manatees. A perfect place to see manatees in Florida , there’s a launch site for canoes. The combination of sea cows and lush surroundings make Manatee Cove Park one of the best places to go kayaking in Florida .

Around the lagoon, you’ll find a nature trail perfect for a hike any time of day. If you’re a fisherman, bring your rods and lures and enjoy shoreline fishing access.

The park is also perfect for families after referendum improvements. Now, there’s also a sizable playground for children, benches, picnic tables, and even a grill found in a nice, shaded area.

A manatee swims underwater and curiously looks into the camera at Manatee Cove Park.

Explore Sebastian Inlet State Park

Ten miles south of Melbourne Beach, you’ll find one of the best state parks in Florida for fishing, surfing, and observing rare wildlife. Sebastian Inlet State Park is located on the tip of two barrier islands that forms the boundaries between Brevard and Indian River counties.

Sebastian Inlet has multiple fishing jetties. It is considered a premier saltwater fishing spot on the East Coast! Anglers regularly catch fish like Spanish mackerel, redfish, and snook.

If you visit during June and July, you can see Loggerhead Sea Turtles nesting on a ranger-led walk. If you’re lucky, you can see baby sea turtles eating the seagrass beds off the Indian River Lagoon. The most endangered whale species, the Right Whale, can be seen on the coast as well.

Take a hike on the one-mile Hammock Trail . Rentals are available for canoeing and kayaking on the Indian River Lagoon. Take a night paddle to see bioluminescence! Be patient and you’ll have the chance to see bobcats, alligators, river otters, and other native Florida animals !

Sebastian Inlet boasts 3 miles of beach perfect for swimming. Only a portion of the beach offers lifeguard protection from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Because the inlet is known for its waves, those with small children should swim in the gentler waves of “The Cove” to the north.

This South Florida State Park is famous for its surf breaks, “First Peak” and a third of a mile south, “Monster Hole.” The contour of the ocean floor rises, causing waves to rise up and form long lines, giving surfers a long ride back to shore.

Walk the Historic Downtown

The most bustling and interesting area in any place is downtown, and the Harbor City is no exception. One of the most fun activities in Melbourne is exploring Historic Downtown.

The most charming part of Melbourne, Historic Downtown dates back all the way to the 1800s!

In recent years, the Melbourne Main Street Program rehabilitated the area, making it the “preferred destination” for quality dining, shopping, and entertainment!

Along Main Street, you’ll find twelve murals, each hand-painted and commissioned by the city. The murals are bright and colorful and depict everything from blue jays sitting on an orange to loggerhead sea turtles and hisbicus flowers to vintage cars.

Downtown also hosts some of the best festivals in Florida . Among the upcoming festivals, you can enjoy Botanical Fest where vendors will be selling trees, plants, decorative items, and more! It’s the best place to spruce up your yard!

A quaint and jaunty sign covers the entrance to Historic Downtown, one of the best places to go in Melbourne, Florida.

Have Fun at Andretti Thrill Park

Paddling Paradise, run out of Melbourne, offers many exciting tours that take you to the best places to kayak in Florida .

Even if you’re an experienced paddler, how many times have you gone bioluminescent kayaking in Florida ?

Bioluminescence is light produced by a living organism. If you’ve ever seen a firefly, you have seen bioluminescence! The light is produced by energy released by chemical reactions inside the organism.

When you go bioluminescent kayaking, the water lights up as you glide along. Each stroke of your paddle will produce a bright shimmer of blue! Don’t worry, you’re not hurting the plankton in the water!

Paddling Paradise offers a bioluminescence tour that takes you through the Indian River Lagoon. Incredibly dark at night, you’ll be able to see the shimmering lights clearly.

Make sure to wear water shoes and bring bug spray!

The tours are offered from June through October when bioluminescence is at its peak. Tours are given exclusively at night, sometimes even by moonlight.

If you’re lucky, you’ll even see manatees! Check Paddling Paradise’s website for more information.

Loggerhead turtle with a satellite transmitter on the beach in Melbourne

Ninety percent of the sea turtles that nest in the United States come to the coasts of Florida to do so. And the beaches along Melbourne are some of the most important for turtle conservation. The 72 miles of beaches in Brevard County have some of the largest nesting sites of loggerhead sea turtles, so it is a prime focus of the Space Coast to keep their native residents thriving.

At the Sea Turtle Preservation Society, volunteers are committed to helping the sea turtles that nest in Florida survive. They oversee the protection of the leatherback, loggerhead, and green sea turtles that come to lay their eggs every year.

Visitors can get involved in helping with the sea turtles, too. They host activities like regular beach cleanups, charity races, and turtle night walks. The night walks allow guided groups to observe the nesting loggerhead sea turtles, which is a beautiful, unforgettable experience.

5. Brevard County Movie in the Park

Brevard County Movie In The Park

For much of the year, I have experienced the perfect weather in Florida. While I sympathize with those poor souls in the Midwest, who have to endure cold temperatures and the hassle of putting on wool slippers and chaining up their tires just to go to work, I consider myself lucky to be in The Sunshine State. Here, I can leisurely enjoy umbrella drinks and soak up the live outdoor entertainment.

If you’re like me and prefer being part of the second group, I highly recommend spending an evening at the Brevard County Movie in the park. It’s an event that promises a fantastic time. Of course, there’s always the chance of it being canceled due to inclement weather, but in my experience, it usually goes off without a hitch.

Attending this event is a treat for movie enthusiasts. They offer a wide range of movies, both classic and contemporary, ensuring there’s something for everyone’s taste. It’s a delightful experience to gather under the open sky with fellow movie lovers and enjoy a cinematic masterpiece.

But that’s not all; the event becomes even more enticing with the presence of food trucks. These mobile culinary delights offer a unique mix of cuisines, incorporating various international influences. From mouthwatering street tacos to savory Korean BBQ, the options are diverse and tantalizing. It’s an opportunity to savor delicious food while immersing oneself in the lively atmosphere.

6. Kennedy Space Center

Kennedy Space Center

Located in nearby Cape Canaveral, I had the incredible opportunity to experience the Kennedy Space Center firsthand. As soon as I stepped foot on the grounds, I could feel the historic significance of the place. It has been ground zero for the United States’ space program for generations, and I couldn’t help but be in awe of the incredible achievements that have taken place here.

Entering the museum, I was immediately struck by the dedication to preserving the area’s rich space history. The exhibits and artifacts on display were truly one-of-a-kind, offering a glimpse into the extraordinary world of space exploration. It was a humbling experience to see items that have been to the moon and back, and to learn about the incredible missions that were launched from this very site.

While exploring the exhibits, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of admiration for the scientists, engineers, and astronauts who have dedicated their lives to pushing the boundaries of human knowledge. Their bravery and determination were palpable in every corner of the museum, reminding me of the immense challenges they faced and overcame in the pursuit of space exploration.

One of the highlights of my visit was taking part in a guided tour. It provided a comprehensive and insightful experience, with knowledgeable guides who shared fascinating stories and information about the space center. The tour even included round-trip transportation and made stops at nearby outlet stores, allowing us to indulge in a bit of shopping alongside our space exploration adventure.

However, I must admit that the tours can be quite demanding, as they can make for long days. It may not be the best option for those with very young children, as they might not have the patience to endure the entire experience. Nonetheless, for anyone with an interest in space or a desire to witness firsthand the wonders of human achievement, a visit to the Kennedy Space Center is an absolute must.

7. El Ambia Cuban Restaurant

El Ambia Cuban Restaurant

Outside of Cuba itself, I can confidently say that Florida is where you’ll find the largest number of Cuban expatriates. Among Florida’s many beach destinations, Melbourne stood out as one of the state’s finest. Its beaches, particularly Melbourne and Paradise Beaches, were hailed as local gems and drew visitors from far and wide.

The best part? Access to these stunning beaches was completely free. Unlike some of the more upscale and exclusive beaches like Miami Beach, Melbourne’s sandy shores had a distinctly laid-back vibe, making them perfect for families and anyone seeking relaxation.

As I ventured onto the beaches, the allure of the ocean waves beckoned me. Surfing became an exhilarating pastime, allowing me to ride the swells and feel the sheer thrill of gliding on water. And when I wasn’t riding the waves, I found myself happily combing the sandy shores, eagerly collecting seashells and other treasures washed up by the tides.

On those sun-drenched days, I discovered the true art of relaxation. I would find a cozy spot beneath an umbrella, content to while away the hours with a good book or simply basking in the warmth of the sun. The tranquil atmosphere of the beach, coupled with the soothing sound of crashing waves, created an idyllic sanctuary that melted away any worries or stress.

Whenever hunger struck, I didn’t have to venture far. The nearby dining options were abundant and diverse, catering to a variety of tastes. From casual beachside cafes offering fresh seafood delicacies to quaint bistros serving up international cuisine, my culinary cravings were effortlessly satisfied.

And let’s not forget the shopping opportunities that awaited me nearby. After a day of sun-soaked adventures, I’d wander through the charming beachside boutiques and lively marketplaces, indulging in a bit of retail therapy. Whether it was unique souvenirs, stylish beachwear, or handcrafted treasures, I never failed to find something to take home as a memento of my beachside escapades.

Located on Dixie Highway NE in Palm Bay, I had the opportunity to visit the Ted Moorhead Lagoon House. It was situated along the Indian River Lagoon National Scenic Byway and owned by the city, making it easily accessible for residents and tourists alike.

As I stepped inside, I could immediately sense the facility’s dedication to preserving the rich history of the area and educating visitors about its significance. The walls were adorned with informative exhibits that showcased the founding, culture, development, and economy of the region. It was evident that the staff had put great effort into curating a comprehensive collection of artifacts and information.

One of the main attractions of the Lagoon House was its boardwalk, which provided a scenic route to explore the surrounding natural beauty. As I strolled along the wooden pathway, I marveled at the stunning views of the Indian River Lagoon, a testament to the area’s pristine ecosystem.

Inside the facility, I came across an intriguing exhibit featuring Atlantic whales. It was fascinating to learn about these majestic creatures and their importance to the local marine life. The exhibit was well-designed, with lifelike models and informative displays that captured the imagination.

However, the highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the massive map of the lagoon. Spanning over 20 feet, it offered a detailed representation of the lagoon’s geography and served as an interactive learning tool. I spent a considerable amount of time examining the map, tracing my fingers along the waterways and learning about the various habitats and species that called the lagoon home.

The Ted Moorhead Lagoon House not only offered an immersive experience through its exhibits but also provided a range of educational programs throughout the year. I was delighted to discover that they organized children’s activities, invited guest speakers, and conducted guided tours. It was evident that they aimed to cater to visitors of all ages, ensuring an engaging and informative visit for everyone.

10. Foosaner Art Museum

Foosaner Art Museum

For nearly four decades, I have had the pleasure of experiencing the wonders of the Foosaner Art Museum in Melbourne’s enchanting Eau Gallie Arts District. The museum has become a haven for art enthusiasts, showcasing a remarkable collection that spans countless centuries and hails from all corners of the world.

Every visit to the museum is a unique adventure, as they frequently rotate their permanent displays and host captivating traveling exhibitions. Stepping through its doors, I am always greeted by something new and exciting, ensuring that each visit is filled with anticipation and discovery.

One of the museum’s distinguishing features is its commitment to providing hands-on activities and instructional programs. As I wander through the corridors, I find myself immersed in a realm of artistic exploration and education. Whether it’s a painting workshop, a sculpture demonstration, or a photography seminar, there is always an opportunity to engage with the art and learn from the masters themselves.

The heart of the museum lies within its permanent collection, which predominantly showcases contemporary art crafted by both local talents and renowned international artists. The collection is a testament to the diverse range of artistic expressions found within various mediums. Vibrant paintings, thought-provoking sculptures, mesmerizing installations, and captivating mixed-media creations adorn the walls and spaces, creating an atmosphere that celebrates creativity in all its forms.

I am consistently fascinated by the depth and breadth of the collection. With each visit, I am transported into different worlds, as the art pieces speak volumes about the rich tapestry of human experiences and emotions. The museum’s curation ensures that every artwork is a powerful storyteller, capturing the essence of the artists’ visions and inviting me to interpret and engage with their narratives.

11. Melbourne Community Orchestra

Melbourne Community Orchestra

If I’ve had my fill of sun, sand, and surf and longed for a slightly more artistic and culturally significant way to spend my evening, I discovered that a few hours at the Melbourne Community Orchestra would be the perfect fit. It was a delightful experience, as I got to immerse myself in the world of high-quality performing arts that wouldn’t have been accessible to many residents if not for this incredible orchestra.

For over two decades, the community orchestra has been dedicated to providing the local community with opportunities to enjoy and engage with the arts. As I walked into their venue, I could sense the passion and dedication that radiated from the musicians on stage. The atmosphere was filled with anticipation and excitement.

The orchestra generously hosted a variety of free public events throughout the year, making the arts accessible to everyone. This inclusivity impressed me greatly, as it showed their commitment to ensuring that culture and creativity are not restricted by financial constraints. It was heartwarming to see people from all walks of life coming together to appreciate the beauty of music.

One aspect that stood out to me was their outdoor evening events, which happened to be some of the most popular. It was a warm summer evening, and the venue was set up in a picturesque outdoor space. As I arrived, I noticed families and friends gathering, armed with their own picnic baskets filled with delicious food and refreshing drinks. The ambiance was relaxed and inviting, creating the perfect setting for an enchanting evening.

I found myself a comfortable spot, spreading out my blanket and settling down as the sun began to set. The gentle breeze rustled through the trees, adding a touch of serenity to the atmosphere. The orchestra members took their places on stage, their instruments poised and ready.

As the music began, I was immediately captivated. The harmonious melodies filled the air, weaving a tapestry of emotions that resonated deep within me. Each note was played with precision and passion, as if the musicians were pouring their souls into their performances. The skill and talent displayed were truly awe-inspiring.

Throughout the evening, the orchestra showcased a diverse repertoire, ranging from classical masterpieces to contemporary arrangements. The conductor led with grace and finesse, guiding the musicians through each composition flawlessly. I found myself swaying to the rhythm, completely absorbed in the symphony of sounds that surrounded me.

What impressed me even more was the family-friendly nature of the event. Children were welcomed with open arms, and the orchestra made sure to include pieces that would resonate with younger audiences. It was heartening to witness the joy and wonder on the faces of the children as they listened and watched the orchestra perform. The community orchestra truly created an environment where art could be appreciated by all generations.

As the evening came to a close, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible experience. The Melbourne Community Orchestra had not only provided an avenue for me to indulge in the arts but had also fostered a sense of unity and community spirit. I left with a renewed appreciation for the power of music and the impact it can have on our lives.

12. Andretti Thrill Park

Andretti Thrill Park

Even though I’m not a big auto racing fan, the name Andretti has always been synonymous with motorsports for me. So when I had the chance to visit Andretti Thrill Park, I knew I was in for an exciting experience. Located on South Babcock Street in Melbourne, this park has been in business for nearly 20 years and is a popular destination for people from all over the country.

As soon as I arrived at the park, I could feel the thrill in the air. The place was buzzing with energy, and I couldn’t wait to dive into the various activities they had to offer. From the moment I stepped foot inside, I was greeted with the sound of go-karts whizzing by and the laughter of people enjoying themselves.

I started off with the high-powered go-kart racing, and let me tell you, it was an adrenaline rush like no other. The speed, the tight turns, and the competitive spirit among the racers made it an unforgettable experience. I felt like a true race car driver, gripping the steering wheel tightly and pushing the pedal to the metal.

After the exhilarating race, I decided to try out some of the other attractions. Laser tag was next on my list, and it was a blast. Running around, dodging laser beams, and trying to outsmart my opponents was an absolute thrill. The futuristic arena added to the excitement, and I couldn’t help but feel like a secret agent in a high-stakes mission.

As if that wasn’t enough, Andretti Thrill Park also had a miniature golf course that offered a fun and challenging experience. I tested my skills as I navigated through the various obstacles and tried to sink the perfect putt. It was a great way to relax a bit while still enjoying the park’s lively atmosphere.

And let’s not forget about the huge video arcade. With rows upon rows of arcade games and the sound of winning tickets filling the air, I felt like a kid again. I tried my hand at a variety of games, from classic arcade favorites to the latest virtual reality experiences. It was a nostalgic and entertaining journey through gaming history.

As the day went on, I realized that an hour at Andretti Thrill Park wouldn’t be nearly enough for anyone, especially families with young children. The park offers so much more than just a quick visit. It’s a place where memories are made, and time seems to fly by in the most enjoyable way possible.

13. Tank America

Tank America

If you’re looking for an adrenaline-pumping adventure that you’ll never forget, let me tell you about my experience at Tank America in Melbourne, Florida. Picture this: I found myself behind the wheel of a massive tank, poised to drive over a car while the barrel of a fully-automatic military-grade machine gun smoked, ready to unleash a belt of live rounds. It was an afternoon like no other.

From the moment I arrived, I knew this was no ordinary recreational destination. Tank America offered an experience that was truly one-of-a-kind. Of course, I should mention that it wasn’t exactly cheap, but trust me when I say it was worth every penny. It turned out to be one of the highlights of my entire trip to Florida.

As I stepped into the tank, excitement coursed through my veins. The staff encouraged us to channel our inner action movie heroes and quote cheesy lines like “Say hello to my little friend” before pulling the trigger. It added an extra layer of thrill and humor to the whole experience.

Now, I must admit, this exhilarating adventure might not be suitable for everyone. The loud booms and explosive nature of the activity definitely wouldn’t sit well with my Aunt Millie from Cleveland, who tends to be on the timid side. But for thrill-seekers like me, it was a match made in heaven.

Driving the tank over the car and feeling the power of the machine gun reverberate through my entire being was something I’ll never forget. The sheer intensity of the moment was awe-inspiring, and I couldn’t help but feel like an unstoppable force.

14. Rehab Vintage Market

Rehab Vintage Market

If you agree with the adage that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, let me tell you about my experience at the Rehab Vintage Market on Pineapple Avenue. I decided to spend a leisurely hour or two there, curious to see what hidden gems awaited me.

As I stepped inside, I was immediately captivated by the eclectic atmosphere that enveloped the place. It was part antique store, part junk emporium, and part gift shop, all blended together in a delightful fusion of nostalgia and curiosity. There was an undeniable charm to the mismatched display of items, each with its own story to tell.

I wandered through the aisles, my eyes dancing from one intriguing object to another. The market was a treasure trove, filled with relics from the past waiting to be discovered. It felt like stepping into a time capsule, with every corner holding the promise of a unique keepsake.

I wasn’t quite sure how to classify this place, but that didn’t matter. What mattered was the sense of adventure that filled the air as I embarked on my search. I didn’t mind taking my time, knowing that patience would be rewarded with a find that spoke to my heart.

If I had a specific item in mind, the friendly owners were always ready to assist. They greeted me with warm smiles and gladly pointed me in the right direction, their knowledge of the market’s treasures seemingly endless. They understood the thrill of the hunt and were eager to share in the excitement.

Like many vintage markets, the Rehab Vintage Market held a sense of mystery. With each step, I couldn’t help but wonder what unique piece of history awaited me just around the corner. The possibilities were endless, and the anticipation only heightened my excitement.

As I roamed through the market, time seemed to slip away. I lost myself in a world of forgotten treasures, appreciating the craftsmanship and stories behind each item. From delicate porcelain figurines to weathered leather suitcases, there was a profound beauty in the aged patina that adorned these artifacts.

15. Astronaut Memorial Planetarium and Observatory

Astronaut Memorial Planetarium and Observatory

Florida holds a special place in my heart when it comes to the incredible journey of America’s space race. From its very inception, I have witnessed the state’s prominent role in shaping the course of space exploration.

During my recent visit to Florida, I had the opportunity to explore the Astronaut Memorial Planetarium and Observatory, nestled on the sprawling campus of Eastern Florida State College in Cocoa. The moment I stepped inside, I could feel the excitement and curiosity permeating the air, blending seamlessly with the awe-inspiring exhibits and installations.

Guided by a knowledgeable expert, I embarked on a mesmerizing tour of the cosmos within the planetarium. As the lights dimmed, the vast expanse of space unfolded before my eyes. I marveled at the intricate dance of celestial bodies, captivated by the stories of distant galaxies and constellations. It was as if I had been transported to another dimension, one where the mysteries of the universe were within my grasp.

But the wonders didn’t end there. I eagerly ascended to the rooftop observatory, ready to experience a firsthand encounter with the heavens above. The night sky stretched out before me, adorned with a breathtaking tapestry of stars. With the guidance of the observatory staff, I peered through the powerful telescopes, each revealing a new facet of the cosmos. The craters of the Moon came into focus, allowing me to appreciate its rugged beauty. And as I shifted my gaze further, I caught a glimpse of distant planets, their colorful forms mesmerizing in their uniqueness.

Yet, the Astronaut Memorial Planetarium and Observatory offered more than just a chance to marvel at the wonders of space. It provided a profound opportunity to learn and deepen my understanding of our universe. The exhibits and displays imparted knowledge with interactive elements, engaging my senses and sparking my curiosity. I absorbed fascinating facts about the history of space exploration and the courageous individuals who had ventured beyond our planet’s boundaries. The stories of astronauts who had risked everything to explore the unknown left an indelible mark on my own sense of adventure and exploration.

As the tour drew to a close, I couldn’t help but reflect on the incredible journey I had undertaken within the walls of the Astronaut Memorial Planetarium and Observatory. It was not only a place of learning but also a source of inspiration, reminding me of the limitless possibilities that lie beyond our earthly confines.

The Best Things To Do In Beautiful Melbourne, Florida

melbourne fl tourist attraction

  • Destinations
  • United States

You’ll find Melbourne in Brevard County on Florida’s East Coast, in an area also known as the Space Coast. It sits south of Cape Canaveral and the mammoth Kennedy Space Center and north of Vero and West Palm Beach. Melbourne has an eclectic feel and doesn’t fit a mold like so many other Florida towns. I love that about Melbourne, and the outdoor offerings, as well as the historical treasures. You also won’t have huge crowds as some of Melbourne’s nearby counterparts, making the area perfect for social distancing measures. Here are the best things to do in beautiful Melbourne that I love doing.

Things To Do In Melbourne, FL

As I mentioned, Melbourne doesn’t fit a box, so the offerings are random, and most should appeal to 50+ tourists. From strolling historic Melbourne to game venues and parks, seeing top-notch entertainment, and dining at incredibly delicious eateries, you are sure to love this place as much as I do.

Historic downtown Melbourne in Florida.

Thomas Kelley / Shutterstock

Historic Downtown Melbourne

We will hit the ground running with my favorite part of Melbourne. East New Haven is home to historic downtown Melbourne, circa the 1800s. Though the part I’m talking about only runs about seven blocks east to west, there are many great things to do here. Browse a large number of boutique, antique, and consignment shops, eat a great meal, and enjoy a delicious beer from Hells ‘n Blazes Brewing Company as you take in the best people-watching spot in town.

Shops you can’t miss are Sendala’s Boutique , Jessup’s , and Tallulah 9 . Pop in Grimaldi Candy Company for a sample or take home a bag or serving of the wonderful chocolate-dipped potato chips, available in both milk or dark chocolate.

A giraffe at the Brevard Zoo in Melbourne, Florida.

Brevard Zoo

Get up close and personal with over 100 species at the Brevard Zoo . You’ll see spider monkeys, alpaca, alligators, and giraffe, and more in this manageable size zoo. For a small fee, you can hand-feed lorikeet and giraffe, take a guided kayak tour, or enjoy a 10-minute train ride through animal habitats.

A mural in the Eau Gallie Arts District of Melbourne.

Melody Pittman

Eau Gallie Arts District

Melbourne is one of Florida’s only places I can think of with a part of town dedicated to the arts. The Eau Gallie Arts District (abbreviated EGAD ) offers fabulous art museums and galleries, impressive murals, and a handful of shops to browse. Explore 2,000 years of history at the Foosaner Art Museum , including 20th-century pieces from Central Florida artists. Grab a slice of pizza from FM Pizza and a tasty treat from Joan’s Perfect Pie as you explore.

Andretti Thrill Park

Channel your inner kid as you enjoy the thrilling options at Andretti Thrill Park . I had lived in Florida for five years before I even knew it existed, and now it is one of the top places I recommend for all ages to visit. You’ll find old-school video games (the ones I still know how to play), laser tag, go-karts (super fun!), batting cages, and climbing wall, to name a few.

Wickham Park

Melbourne’s most noteworthy park, 391 acres, Wickham Park is a delightful place to get outdoors, hike trails, swim, and camp. Wickham’s activities include an archery range, bicycle and jogging roadway, disc golf, ball fields, event pavilion, and equestrian facilities. There are 133 campsites to choose from, with shower and laundry facilities, a dog park, playground, and dump stations (nominal fee).

At Christmas, you can drive through Space Coast Lightfest , a stunning landscape with 3 million twinkling holiday lights, festive displays, and a 200-foot light tunnel. I can’t wait to take my granddaughter this year!

The King Center for the Performing Arts in Melbourne, Florida.

King Center for the Performing Arts

See your favorite musical group, comedians, touring productions, and more at this 100,000-square-foot venue. There are performances year-round and offer an impressive variety. I’ve seen Hall and Oates, The Impractical Jokers, Ringo Starr, and Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons there, to name a few. The King Center for the Performing Arts has great displays in the lobby, a bar, and outdoor dining for most events, and many choices for keeping you entertained while waiting for your show.

Pro Tip: Aisles at the theatre run straight across with no break in the middle. It requires you to stand up often to let people in and out when sitting on the ends, but you have to slide through dozens to get out if you are in the middle. Keep that in mind when choosing the best seat for you, and honestly, all of the seats are good ones at this venue.

Melbourne Greyhound Park

You have the best of both worlds at the Melbourne Greyhound Park , offering live simulcasts of harness, thoroughbred, and greyhound racing from tracks around the country and poker room and Vegas-style games. The Melbourne Greyhound Park was once a live racing track, but it has become simulcast over the past few years.

I have not been to the park, but it is a big draw and my friends in Melbourne go often. They do not have dog racing, just other forms of gambling, which is rare for the area other than gray machines and bingo.

A breakfast skillet form Backwater in Melbourne, Florida.

Best Restaurants In Melbourne, FL

I love the dining scene in Melbourne, though I have been known to drive the hour it takes me to get there from my house in Vero Beach and never stray from the gourmet hot dogs most of the time. The places that rank high on my foodie radar are these six, sorted by type of meals offered.

For a town this size, Melbourne has an arsenal of delicious breakfast joints. I have two favorites: Backwater and Mulberry Lane Cafe . At Backwater, enjoy skillet creations like The Boss Hog (provolone-stuffed rope sausage, cheese grits, balsamic onions, and a sunny-side-up egg) or cook-your-own pancakes on one of eight griddle-insert tables available.

A second option for a memorable breakfast is Mulberry Lane Cafe, a strip mall find with really good food, excellent service, and a wide variety of dishes. Try Smoked Salmon Hash, Pork Carnitas Benedict, Carrot Cake Pancakes, or one of the other specialty dishes. Or, if you prefer, Mulberry Lane has traditional favorites, too, like omelets, oatmeal, and pancakes. Breakfast is served all day at both restaurants.

A meal from Mustard’s Last Stand in Melbourne, Florida.

Mustard’s Last Stand is my favorite restaurant in Melbourne. You know they are doing something so right when a poppy seed hot dog bun and creative ingredients with fun dog names keep me coming back time after time. Pair the dogs with perfectly thin-cut fries and toppings that will make your mouth water, and you’ve found success in the food scene.

Mustard’s is at East New Haven in the historic downtown, with a second location in the Eau Gallie Arts District. My favorites are the Reuben Dog (kraut, Swiss, 1000 Island) or Joe Dogmaggio (marinara, bacon, Swiss, Parmesan), and the Island Fries, Thousand Island dressing, grilled onions, and melted cheddar.

The Nomad Cafe sits on Harbor City Boulevard (US-1) at the corner of East New Haven. This fresh and trendy cafe has delicious food and a great menu. Try the Signature Nomad Guacamole and Roasted Beets with goat cheese and candied walnuts. I love Nomad Cafe’s salad creations for the main course, but the burrito, smothered in chipotle bechamel sauce, is phenomenal.

Located at Melbourne Beach, and the best sunset view for miles, enjoy a German meal at its finest at Cafe Coconut Cove, or a tremendous Irish menu full of yummy choices from Meg O’Malley’s in downtown Melbourne.

Cafe Coconut Cove is at Melbourne Beach, and you will be shocked when you see the hidden location. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the service is pretty dynamite. Start your meal with the Liver Pate board, complete with crackers and veggies. Potato pancakes are another great choice. I love the Combination Plate, which has small portions of Jaeger Schnitzel, red cabbage, Bratwurst, and Sauerbraten (my fave!).

Another place I enjoy dining, actually for lunch or dinner, is Meg O’Malley’s Restaurant and Irish Pub, which is currently undergoing a renovation but should reopen soon. You will find all of your favorite Irish dishes here, such as Bangers and Mash (consider sharing, it is enormous!), Fish and Chips, and Shepherd’s Pie.

Start your Meg O’Malley’s experience with an 18-cent cup of Irish Parliament Bean Soup, something I can never pass up. It is so delicious and really … 18 cents? You’ll also need to try the Sausage Rolls in flaky pastry with whole grain mustard for dipping. OMG, they are superb! For dinner, my favorite dish is the Guinness Pot Roast.

Best Hotels To Stay In Melbourne

Two of the most talked-about places to stay in Melbourne are the Crane Creek Inn and Radisson Suite Hotel Oceanfront. Crane Creek is a historic waterfront location with coastal-chic rooms, a lovely heated pool, and free parking. Included with your stay are complimentary breakfast, Wi-Fi, and drinks (soda, wine, water, beer, and coffee) all day long. The Manatee Room would be my pick.

For those wanting a more chain hotel experience, the Radisson Suite Hotel Oceanfront on A1A looks like a perfect choice. There are also on-site restaurants, a pool and jacuzzi, two sundecks, and a 15th-floor fitness center in this 168-suite property. You’ll find the Radisson 7 miles from the Melbourne International Airport.

Pro Tip: Melbourne, along with most coastal cities in Florida, offer great golf, snorkeling, fishing, and other outdoor activities. They are abundant and available for your year-round enjoyment.

If you drive on U.S. 1, you’ll see the Riders on the Storm Inn on the south side. Currently, this is the most visible sign that Melbourne was the birthplace of legendary musician Jim Morrison.

Morrison was born on December 8, 1943. His early childhood Melbourne home was owned by his parents, George Stephen Morrison, an Air Force officer, and Clara Clark Morrison, a teacher.

The Morrison's original house in Melbourne FL

The home is located at 2100 Vernon Place in Melbourne. In 2006, the 2,112 sq-ft house sold for $135,000.

Although it was renovated from its original style, it was put on the market in February 2022 for $2,500,000.

In July 2022, it was lowered to $1,950,000.

Morrison's house from Brevard County Property Records

In October of 2022, it was removed from the market and is no longer for sale. The real estate agent thought buying the home of a rock legend would warrant the hefty price tag by a wealthy superfan.

Although the original house has changed, fans of Jim Morrison continue to visit the home to pay tribute to the iconic rock star.

19 Fun Things to Do in Melbourne Fl for the whole Family!

Looking for the Best Things to Do in Melbourne Florida?

While often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors, Melbourne is an east coast Florida city that is not to be missed. As you will see, Melbourne has no shortage of things to do and is a vibrant city with entertainment and adventure to fit a variety of interests.

Let’s go exploring through nineteen of the best activities and attractions in Melbourne.

19 Best & Fun Things to Do in Melbourne Fl

First up -the beach, of course.

The first thing on many visitors’ lists when visiting a coastal town is the beach.  While perhaps not as well known as Daytona or Cocoa , Melbourne Beach is a bit of a hidden gem with miles of beautiful Atlantic Ocean coastline to enjoy. Separated from the mainland by the Indian River, a quick trip across the bridge will soon have you surrounded by the salt air and your toes in the sand.

Multiple access points and plenty of parking allow easy access to the beach, but be prepared that parking is only free for residents.

The beaches in Melbourne cater to a wide variety of interests, appealing to those looking for waves to surf, access to fishing, miles for leisurely strolls, or simply a place for blissful relaxation under the Florida sun. At the end of the day, be sure to head over to the pier for a breathtaking sunset view. On of the best free things to do in Melbourne fl.

The Brevard Zoo

If you have seen one zoo, you have seen them all, right?  Not in Melbourne!  While visitors will certainly find the expected zoo residents, the Brevard Zoo has so much more to offer. One of the best things to do in Brevard County for sure.

Does zip lining over crocodiles sound interesting? The Treetop Trek Aerial Adventure consists of ropes courses for all ability levels, zip lines, obstacles, and an aerial view of some of the animals. If the water is more your style, take a guided kayak tour through the African exhibit.

If you prefer your feet firmly on the ground, feeding a giraffe or lorikeet may be your choice of adventure. For the younger visitors, goats, alpacas, and a tortoise are ready to meet them in the barnyard.

And, finally, if the afternoon gets too hot, taking a dip in the Indian River Play Lagoon is the perfect way to cool off. This is so much more than your typical zoo! One of the best Melbourne fl things to do.

Get your creative juices flowing

Downtown Melbourne has plenty to offer for all sorts of creative outlets. If you want to add your touch to an existing piece, head to getting Fired Up Pottery to pick your project and spend the afternoon painting according to your own unique style or create a special memento to remember your visit.

For the more ambitious types, sign up for a class to create your own clay or fused glass masterpiece at Art Abilities or Mimi’s Crafts, appealing to artists of all experience levels.

Other creative options include pouring candles at This Little Light of Mine and a wide variety of project ideas and inspiration at crafting studios such as Create DIY or Pinspiration. If your creative juices need some encouragement or you are looking for a girls night out, Painting with a Twist and Board and Brush are where you can enjoy a glass of wine (or two!) while you create.

Andretti Thrill Park

Calling all thrill seekers! To avoid taking home a speeding ticket as your souvenir, head to Andretti Thrill Park to fill your need for speed. You can test out your driving abilities or claim the family champion trophy on the F1 Speed Track, Super Speedway, Jr Indy Track, or Rookie Track.

There are single and double seater carts, ready for team and individual racing or allowing younger visitors to enjoy the thrilling ride. The park also offers so much more than just go karts (as if that weren’t enough!).

Also included are amusement rides for all ages, mini golf, laser tag, batting cages, climbing wall, bumper boats, and the Andretti Express – a train ride throughout the park.

To take a break from the heat, head indoors to the 7000 sq ft arcade where you can collect tickets to exchange for prizes or experience virtual reality. There is something for everyone to enjoy!

American Muscle Car Museum

If the car enthusiast in you still wants more after the racing around the Andretti Thrill Park, then the American Muscle Car Museum should be the next stop on your list.

The museum is the home of the private collection of over 300 cars owned by pet pharmaceutical entrepreneur Mark Pieloch. On display you will find an amazing collection of Cobras, Vipers, Camaros, Corvettes, Firebirds, and Porsches, just to name a few.

While the museum is not open to the public on a daily schedule, it is frequently used as an event space to host fundraisers for local charities. Typically multiple events are scheduled each month and there is a long waiting list of organizations waiting to get on the schedule, so the opportunities are plentiful.

A small donation to the hosting charity will open the door to your chance to take in this extensive museum.

Take in the rich history

Melbourne is great for history lovers, too.  There are two historic homes in Melbourne that date back to the turn of the twentieth century and preserve the memory of some of the city’s most impactful families.

Guests are invited to visit the Green Gables House, taking a step into the life of William and Nora Wells in the late 1800s and learning about the impact they made on the community.

The home is open for public tours every Saturday from 10am-2pm for a suggested $10 donation.  Less than five miles north of Green Gables, the Rossetter House Museum also invites visitors to tour the home and gardens of the Rossetter and Roesch families as they lived in the early 1900s.

All of the furnishings of the Rossetter House are original and it has claimed a spot on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.  Tours are available Wednesday-Saturday for $15.

Ride through the swamp

Airboat rides should be on every Florida visitor’s list, and Melbourne is a great place to catch one.

With its proximity to the St. John’s and Indian Rivers, the area boasts an abundance of wetlands and the wildlife that inhabit them – birds, fish, snakes, turtles, and alligators to name a few. The design of the airboat allows it to skim across shallow and marshy waters where other boats are unable to travel.

Airboats offer a front row seat adventure to view the natural habitat that is uniquely Florida.

The tour is fully narrated by an expert guide with knowledge of the area and where to catch a glimpse of the wetland’s inhabitants. No two adventures are the same due to variables such as weather, season, and water temperature, but you are sure to have an unforgettable experience that is suitable for all ages.

Schedule an eco tour

If the airboat is not quite your style, or you would like a different type of wildlife encounter, a more well-mannered eco tour may be just the thing. Rather than gliding over the marshy waters and swampy areas looking for gators, an eco tour takes passengers on a chartered boat in the Indian River.

Floating down the river is sure to include views of the beautiful natural landscape and large estates along the riverbank, accompanied by educational commentary on the area’s history and unique ecology.

As for encounters with water dwelling friends, keen observers may find manatees enjoying the warmer waters during winter months and dolphins often swim right up to the boats to play.

For a romantic evening, some companies such as Good Natured River Tours even offer a sunset cruise for a relaxing time spent with your loved one or to celebrate a special occasion.

Rent a Kayak or SUP

Visitors who would rather spend time on the water under their own power may be interested in renting a kayak or stand up paddleboard to explore the Indian River Lagoon or Eau Gallie Harbor.

Single or double kayaks are available from a variety of agencies, and a quick paddleboard lesson will have even a novice ready to head out on the water. Adventurers have the option to head out on their own or join a group for a guided tour, either of which is likely to result in encounters with manatees, dolphins, or turtles.

In the summer months (May-September), wait until the sun is setting to embark on a bioluminescence tour and take in the extraordinary sight of marine plankton that light up the water as you paddle through the lagoon.

Typically considered to be reserved for exotic locations like Puerto Rico, this experience is one of many surprises awaiting you in Melbourne. Certainly one of the best things to do in Melbourne fl.

Wine Tasting

While a beachfront town in Florida may not be where you would expect to find local wine, you will be pleasantly surprised to find East Coast Winery and RiverHouse Vineyard in Melbourne.

East Coast Winery in downtown Melbourne offers a wide variety of Florida wines as well as an array of gifts. Specializing in citrus and berry flavors that parallel Florida’s tropical vibe, there are many unique options to sample as you browse the store and decide what to take home with you.

For a more hands-on experience, head just a few miles out of town to the RiverHouse Vineyard during grape picking season in August.

There you will find a variety of muscadine grapes, available u-pick or pre-picked and perfect for eating or wine making. If you would rather skip to the finished product, wine and jelly made with the grapes grown in the vineyard are available for sampling and purchase.

When visiting a new town, it goes without saying that local eateries are a must.  While you may see a few chain restaurants that are familiar to home, a town’s true culture is reflected in the food created by locals and Melbourne offers a wide variety of local fare.

For seafood fans, there is nothing better than fresh seafood right out of the water and there are several options throughout downtown Melbourne and across the river in Melbourne Beach.

Residents and visitors alike frequent Melbourne Seafood Station, Bonefish Willy’s, and Frigate Waterfront Bar & Grill among others – many with waterfront outdoor seating for the full experience.

If your palate is craving variety, you can also find Latin flavors at El Ambia Cubano, German cuisine at Melbourne Biergarten, or a little bit of everything at Matt’s Casbah. After dinner, a walk down to Sue Anne’s Bakery or Melbourne Sweets for dessert will be well worth the trip.

Enjoy the Nightlife

If something sweet isn’t what you are looking for to top off your night, perhaps a drink while enjoying live music would be a better fit. Just as local restaurants are in abundance, there are plenty of places to enjoy a drink and experience Melbourne’s thriving culture that comes alive as the sun goes down.

Mugsy’s offers two bars – Bonnie’s or Clyde’s – with an array of drink options (or request something original) as well as a full menu.

At Mainstreet Pub you will find your typical American-style pub with a variety of music genres throughout the week. For those looking to line dance, County Line Saloon is your country hotspot.

Experience The Mansion

Though this could be grouped in with restaurants, nightlife, or even a historical tour, The Mansion deserves its own individual mention.

Built in a similar era as the Green Gables and Rosetter Houses, The Mansion is not a museum or historical landmark but has instead been restored to a vibrant entertainment space on the river in downtown Melbourne. Beyond just a restaurant, it is a full experience.

The restaurant has freshly made offerings with high quality ingredients to appease everyone’s taste buds. In addition to the vast menu options, you will choose where to dine – in the main restaurant area, the tavern, the terrace, or the garden – each with a different atmosphere to enjoy.

After dinner, or simply as a stop in a downtown tour, visit the cellar for wine, micro brews, whisky, champagne, or even espresso. With so many choices, you are sure to find just the experience you are seeking.

Stroll Downtown

Downtown Melbourne has no shortage of places to explore and things to see for residents and visitors alike.  Through the revitalization efforts of the Melbourne Mural Project, local artists have been commissioned to create a collection of 16 murals on display downtown.

Also scattered throughout downtown are a host of parks offering amenities ranging from playgrounds, pavilions, and grills that create an ideal space to spend the afternoon with friends and family.

The close proximity to the water also provides boat access, fishing piers, and even manatee observation areas in select parks.

Melbourne’s downtown parks boast wide paved paths that are perfect for a biking adventure or leisurely walk with a waterfront view. After taking in local eats, these provide the perfect place for a sunset stroll along the Indian River and a front row seat to the watercolor artistry that is a Florida sunset.

Visit the Farmer’s Market

When in Melbourne on a Saturday, the Farmer’s Market must be on the agenda. Those with small businesses, side gigs, and green thumbs are all ready to meet you. The variety of goods to be found is endless – honey, jerky, jams, candles, jewelry – the list goes on and on.

To improve your health, visit booths offering juice, smoothies, teas, and all things elderberry. To satisfy your sweet tooth, there are plenty of options for cookies, muffins, candies, and more.

Food trucks arrive early with breakfast and stay with plenty of options when it’s time for a lunch break. Visit with local crafters and take home a unique piece to wear or decorate your home.

The market is scheduled weekly on Saturday from 10 am-3 pm for most of the year, but adjusts hours to 9 am-2 pm and decreases frequency to the first and third Saturday in the summer months (June through September).

Watch a launch

With its close proximity to Cape Canaveral, Melbourne is a section of Florida called the Space Coast. Just twenty-five minutes north of Melbourne is the Florida home of NASA and the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.

If a budding astronaut is part of your crew, a day trip to visit the Space Center is well worth your time and the price of admission. You may even get to meet a real astronaut!

However, you don’t have to leave Melbourne to experience the excitement of space travel. If your visit coincides with a NASA or SpaceX launch, relaxing on Melbourne Beach or taking a stroll downtown may be the perfect spot to witness the launch.

The only thing you will miss out on is the crowds! Florida weather can be a bit unpredictable – especially for launches scheduled in the afternoon – so be sure to keep an eye out for any updates or delays.

Explore the arts

Once an independent town, Eau Gallie merged with Melbourne in 1969. The name Eau Gallie continues on to represent the northern section of Melbourne and is the home of the vibrant art district.

In the center, Eau Gallie Square serves as the heart of the district and a showcase of the area’s very talented residents. If you are feeling artsy, or just like to appreciate the talents of others, check out the open air markets, hear local musicians, and watch the schedule for local artist showcases.

The square is surrounded by art and photography galleries to explore, a yoga garden to find your zen, and shops full of locally made products to find a one of a kind piece.

Spend the afternoon perusing Rehab or Revamp Vintage Markets, a boutique, or floral shop. Come early for breakfast at Oh Biscuit, sip coffee from Anaya’s while walking around the square, or stop by the Intracoastal Brewing Company’s food truck.

Do you enjoy Texas Hold’em? Excel at Three Card Poker? Or always follow your gut and seem to pick the winning horse?

If you need to brush up on your game rules, visit their website for a refresher to be well prepared before choosing your table. In addition to live poker, simulcast off track betting is also available for horse and greyhound racing.

Test your gut, follow a hunch, or pick randomly and cheer your racer to victory! The in-house restaurant serves everything from breakfast to seafood if you work up an appetite but can’t leave in the midst of a winning streak.

While Melbourne is bustling with plenty to see and do, a multitude of special events and festivals on the calendar add something special to the atmosphere.

Depending on your timing, you may get to experience a strawberry or blueberry festival, art and craft expo, or cultural event such as the Caribbean or Greek festival. Local cultural events are a chance to experience the art or music of another region and sample authentic foods. Melbourne, like many coastal Florida cities, hosts a festival to find all things strawberry in mid-February.

The blueberry festival is not far behind in April, and both offer plenty of family friendly activities such as petting zoos, face painting, rides/games, and all things berry eat, drink, or buy! Other annual events include a Festival of Trees and plenty of opportunities to find those special gifts during the holiday season.

Activity Guide

Comparing attractions: which one is right for you.

Brevard Zoo was an absolute delight. My kids marveled at the meerkats’ antics while my spouse and I sipped fresh-brewed coffee, basking in the warm Floridian sun.

At Sebastian Inlet State Park, we found our adventurous side, snorkeling in the crystal-clear lagoon, filled with a colorful marine world that sparked our children’s imaginations.

We ended our day at Paradise Beach and Park, a serene gem where we built sandcastles and reminisced about old family vacations.

Sharing laughter, the kids ran wild, the setting sun painted the sky, and we tucked away another precious memory in our family’s Melbourne chapter.

The city is known for its laid back, family friendly atmosphere mixed with its amazing beaches, up and coming arts scene, and all the outdoor adventures you could want.

In this guide we will give you the inside scoop on where to go and what things to do in Melbourne Florida to guarantee memories that will last for a lifetime.

Melbourne Florida

What to Bring to Melbourne

If you’re not used to the Melbourne heat, here are just a few suggestions on what to make sure you have with you, almost year-round.

  • Reusable water bottle with filter – Florida tap water is pretty gross (and I say this as a local who should know). You’ll want to stay hydrated and not keep buying bottled water, so use a reusable water bottle with a filter like this
  • Lightweight walking shoes – you want breathable walking shoes like these to keep your feet cool while still protected.
  • Cooling towels – I love these reusable cooling towels that are easy to carry along with you and fantastic to put around your neck when the heat gets unbearable
  • Shade screen for your car or rental car – there’s nothing worse than the interior of your car baking in the sun for hours while you’re having fun. Use a shade screen like this to make sure you don’t scorch your hands on the steering wheel (yes, that’s a thing)

Getting around Melbourne

Don’t forget that it’s much easier to see Melbourne by car so you can get around on your own.

Rental cars are perfect if you’re flying into the state.

We recommend using Discover Cars price comparison to find the cheapest deals.
