Mergui Archipelago Tours & Cruises

Scattered across the Andaman Sea off Myanmar ’s southern coast, the 800 mostly uninhabited islands of the remote Mergui Archipelago were previously a restricted area, only recently opened-up to tourists. Come join the privileged few who have ventured into this extraordinary ‘lost world’ of pristine natural beauty, astounded by crystal-clear turquoise waters teeming with rich marine life and untouched coral reefs and staggering diversity of exotic wildlife and bird species.

The only way to explore this labyrinth of mysterious islands are multi-day Mergui archipelago cruises on a liveaboard vessel. Whilst sailing the Mergui archipelago, you’ll come across hardly any other tourist vessels, but may encounter the indigenous Moken people , or sea gypsies, who have lived a nomadic existence in these bountiful seas for centuries.

First you visit Cocks Comb and swim through an opening to a beautiful snorkeling area. The snorkeling here is good, It was quiet the day we visited but I’ve heard it can be crowded here, and that has affected the coral. We were lucky because there were only 12 of us. After this you have a few more stops. The last stop being gorgeous Horse Shoe Island. This island is breathtaking, it has a fantastic overlook and you have a wonderful lunch with open bar. At the end of the day you get a buffet dinner back at the Grand Andaman Hotel. All in all, this was a wonderful tour perfectly orchestrated by this company. They quickly answered all emails. They handled all the transfers, arranged for our luggage to be held and then picked us up and dropped us at the hotel in Myanmar. Wonderful company to work with! Read more Written March 9, 2020
  • X7560SVannas 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Beatiful trip to Southern Merguil Islands Last week we've traveled to the southern mergui archipelo islands, we've booked the 4Day/3Night. It was an incredible trip, one of the best experiences ever. Remote islands, almost no other tourists, beautiful beaches and corals (we saw all kind of star fishs, even blue ones, a squid, and much more). The trip was perfectly organized, we had super delicious, healthy and varied food, we especially loved the fresh fish and seafood which was grilled at the campire. Jimmie - our tour guide - took really good care of us, he was very kind and shared a lot of background information about the country and the myanmar people with us. The communication in advance with Lifeseeingtours was also very easy and reliable. We highly recommend the tour. Thanks for the great experience! Anna and Michael Read more Written March 4, 2020
  • martammmmm 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Best 4 days EVER! We stayed on the island for 4 days and 3 nights and to say it was amazing would be an understatement. The sheer beauty of the place itself is breathtaking, and once you add the coral reef, kayaking, the delicious food (the food was sooooo good!!!! Compliments to the chef!!!) and time away from the city it merges into the most perfect experience we could have imagined. The staff were incredible, kind and friendly and we would like to give Thura a special mention because he was the best person ever and we had a great time getting to know him and learning from him. This for us was an experience that we will never forget, at the beginning we were a but unsure as it was all a bit vague but the not knowing made the trip even better, we would reccomend this stay to everyone and anyone, it is a truly beautiful experience and on our last day/night we were lucky enough to be the only people (tourists) staying on the island which was just the cherry on the cake. The first day visiting the waterfall, smart island etc is also so beautiful! Thank you to the wonderful team of Jade flower and life seeing tours who make this possible, thank you thank you thank you! Read more Written February 1, 2020
  • kategibson180 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Sensational food tour The best food we have eaten in Myanmar and we have been here for six weeks. Some truly fantastic seafood dishes. One clam dish was a little too spicy for me but my husband raved about it the flavours were sensational. If you only do one thing in Myeik this is the one. Great value and an opportunity to meet some fascinating people. Read more Written November 15, 2019
  • Vildo 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent day trip We took one of the trips to Smart Island, waterfall & gypsy village (I think). 80 dollars very well spent. We were the only foreigners & we loved it. Guide spoke good English & other locals were very friendly and made the whole trip pretty special. On most stops, we were the only people there. When you compare this with a later trip we did in Phuket in Thailand, it’s massive difference & I can’t recommend Burma / Myanmar enough. Read more Written May 4, 2019
  • Mikael B 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Archipelago day tours are great, the food tour is the hidden gem We went to Life Seeing Tours with the intention to book a day tour with snorkeling and some relaxing on the beaches in the archipelago. We did end up booking and going on not only one but two of the day tours. The tours where great. Good organization and beautiful almost raw (sans some unfortunate trash) beaches and snorkeling. Some of the stops (waterfall, Moken village) feels rather unnecessary but doesn't hurt the experience. The pleasant surprise however was the food tour that we got talked into doing after asking what to do for the evening. One person in our group is a Myanmar national, and the rest of us have lived for a significant amount of time in Yangon so we didn't expect anything outside of what we could have arranged by ourselves but it was fairly cheap so we went for it. It was absolutely amazing. The amount of dishes, presentation, sequencing, background information, and taste is what you'd expect from a high end foodie tasting event. Except it's taking place at a beer station with myanmar beer instead of a white cloth restaurant with fancy wine. At the end, even our local admitted that she wouldn't have been able to put something like that together. I wouldn't say to go for the food tour instead of an archipelago day tour but definitely go for the food tour instead of trying to find dinner on your own. Read more Written April 2, 2019
  • Seabluemoons 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Southern Myanmar Loop - the best Mergui adventure We‘ve heard about the trips from Life Seeing Tours before and already had high expectations - which were even exceeded. The whole organisation with Andre went easy and super smooth. He took great care of our needs and all travel arrangements and was sharing useful tips and recommendations for our next stops along our world travel. The trip itself with our guide Jimmy was just fantastic! We enjoyed 3 days full of amazing beaches, fresh and delicious seafood and had the chance to get very close to locals. Jimmy was always in a good mood, very obliging and answered all our questions. If you want to experience the Southern Mergui Archipelago in an authentic way we highly recommend this tour! • 100_hotel_nights 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Outstandingly patient and reliable The Life Seeing Tours team arranged an amazing trip for myself, my two late-teen sons and my brother-in-law in January, which we planned with Andre over the course of around ten months. Andre was amazingly patient and always available before and during the trip. We covered around 1,000 kms, from Kawthuang all the way up to Hpa An and then to the overland border into Thailand at Mae Sot. There were a lot of transfers by car and boat, plenty of accommodation and plenty of day trips. We only had one issue when our driver missed a key stop that we wanted to do between Dawei and Ye, but that was due to a misunderstanding, partly on account of the driver's limited English and our non-existent Burmese. If only one relatively minor thing goes wrong over the course of 1,000 kms that is probably a good result. Mr Lim and the team in Myeik were remarkably helpful when my brother-in-law was exposed to a rabies risk. It ultimately meant that he had to fly back to Bangkok for vaccinations, but before he did the Life Seeing Tours team in Myeik did everything they could to get him the right treatment locally, including accompanying him to a local hospital and translating conversations with a doctor. Once it became clear that he was going to Bangkok, Andre and Mr Lim quickly and without qualms organised refunds for his accommodation and day trips and transferred the funds immediately on receiving bank account details. (I will post elsewhere about the rabies incident, and suffice to say that the treatment in Bangkok was probably no different to what would be available in Yangon, but you can avoid all of the hassle by getting vaccinated before traveling to Myanmar -- the chances of having a problem are low, but rabies is endemic there, and who needs the stress?) This is a great operation: reliable, honest, helpful and accessible. Andre was recommended to me by friends who did a very similar trip arranged by him a year ago, and I'm just as happy to recommend him and the team in Myeik to future travelers. • TaipeiSung 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful experience I joined the 4 days 3 nights camping trip of Life Seeing Tours and had a wonderful experience. We visited quite a few islands with the most beautiful sand beaches. The snorkeling spots are great, I literally swam with fish. The camping area is peaceful with nice shower. The tent is comfortable with air bed mattress. The meals taste good with a lot of fresh seafoods. The shuttle boat is comfortable and safe. Most importantly, Mr. Andre and his staffs (Ms. Chloe, Mr.Jojo and his team) are very friendly and helpful. They responded to my needs quickly and took great care of me. Hopefully I will have a chance to travel with Life Seeing Tours again soon. Strongly recommend! Read more Written February 12, 2019
  • Jenyns 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Outstanding tours and staff - two day trips with seeing real Myanmar life as promised Life-seeing tours exceeded my expectations. Both day trips were EXCELLENT VALUE for money. They included Smart Island, Marcus (Harris) Island, Grouper Farm, Thel Ni Aw Island, Thameela Island and Dome Island. Activities included snorkeling, swimming, lunches, a gypsy village. The beaches were stunning. We didn't stay overnight but the site and facilities at the campsite were much better than they look in the pictures. January is a great time to visit - hardly any people - never got hot or cold and the water was sublime. The only downside I can think of was that being from Australia my expectations of the snorkeling were too high but still well worth the experience. I'm glad I read on here about the pollution. Expect to see some as it is Asia but it doesn't take away from the overall experience. A highlight of the trip was the boat rides because they were pleasant and safe and the kids LOVED them. The Manager (Andre) provides exceptional service and his guides and boat drivers were very friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and experienced. Read more Written January 17, 2019
  • Sil089 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Slowboat Mergui Adventure I wanted to see those islands, before toursim takes them over. Luckily I found Life Seeing Tours in Myeik - Southern Myanmar. Their propmt response made me book an overnight camping trip to one of those islands in the Mergui Archipel. We were a fantstic group and off we went. Snorkling at Tha Mee La and Marcus Island where we saw a lot of nemos, sea snakes, cuddlefish. The highlight was the relaxed atmosphere on the island, a wonderful beach, bonefire at night and this amazing sunset. The camping under mosquito nets or in tents is fine. There are toilets and shower facilities. Another highlight was the food, all those meals were very delicious. Ko Ko, our guide and the crew made everything that we had a relaxt trip. They where very helpful whenever we needed something. Life Seeing Tours is also a full service agency and helped me booking a flight, busses and hotels. Which was very helpful for continuing my trip to the next destinations. Thanks for making my Trip amazing and beeing so helpful. Read more Written December 1, 2018

We had started from Measot where the border town between Myanmar and Thailand. They organized our trip to Hpa-An form there for 3days original photo tour. We had discussed about our photo tour by emails but they understood that what we required. They provided skillful guide and care us everything. We have been seen very critical and beautiful places a lot during a trip. A costs were reasonable and very clearly the bill. Also managed time keep with well. I highly recommended you if you have a plan to trip at the there. Read more Written November 30, 2018

  • EHa63 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Not worth the money I booked a boat tour with Life Seeing Tours 12.-14.3.2018 in the Mergui Archipelago and was looking forward very much to it, expected a pristine area and spent extra time and money (flights, hotel) to make it possible as Myeik from where the tour starts is pretty remote. To cut it short: The tour was my only bad experience in wonderful Myanmar. The scenery, the other fun and friendly five guests from all around the world and the crew were nice, which made that trip - the rest was more or less a nightmare. I spent 550 Dollar for 2 nights/3 days which is far too much for the 'standard' we got with the 'Fortune Express', which is a very old and neglected ship that almost fells apart, with lots of rats and cockroaches we could hear or see around. My cabin was smelly (urine) and hot because the aircon did not work. The two shared toilets were disgusting and the plumbage was not ok, so there was always 'liquids' on the floor. And so on. The snorkeling in most of the places was disappointing, too, I never saw so much garbage in the water - you literally snorkel through rubbish. The visit of the 'sea gipsy village' was not about information or interaction or so which you could think when you see the pictures in the home page, it's just a short 25 Minutes 'Zoo' walk passing by the houses of the people. All of us guests decided to sleep the second night in tents on the beach, which was nice and a relief as all of us could not think of a second night on the 'Rat&Cockroach Express'. Finally I want to add that we all were easy and definitely not expecting something like luxury. Read more Written June 25, 2018
  • aidanausiabonet 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Food tour- a must do! Andre took us on a food tour dinner and it was amazing. The food was delicious (I think we had around 15 dishes!) and we have not tasted anything like this after 3 years living in Yangon. It would have been impossible to have known what to pick without Andre, and more so to know the history and cooking behind the dishes, so we totally recommend this as one of the top things to do in Myeik. The beautiful islands of the Mergui Archipelago (also known as the Myeik Archipelago) lie off the Tanintharyi coast in the extreme south of Myanmar. While pearls and marine products from the region are sought after, it is the huge untapped potential of the archipelago as a beach and ecotourist destination that could really transform the area's economy. So far, though, Myanmar has resisted taking advantage of some of its most beautiful assets, although there is talk of opening up a few of the islands in the near future. But most of the islands are uninhabited (and they are much smaller than Thailand's islands), making tourism a challenge. For now, the few islands that do have people remain home to tiny villages with hardly any infrastructure and mixed populations of Burmese and the semi-nomadic Moken, so-called ‘sea gypsies’ who move from island to island and live by fishing.

Mergui Archipelago weather overview

Mergui Archipelago has the tropical monsoon climate prevailing. Average temperatures vary very little. Considering humidity, temperatures feel hot all year with a very low chance of rain throughout the year. The area is less temperate than some — in the 30th percentile for pleasant weather — compared to tourist destinations worldwide.

If you’re looking for the very warmest time to visit Mergui, the hottest months are April, March, and then May. See average monthly temperatures below. The warmest time of year is generally mid April where highs are regularly around 94.8°F (34.9°C) with temperatures rarely dropping below 78.1°F (25.6°C) at night.

Best time to go to Mergui Archipelago

As with much of the rest of Myanmar, November to April is the high season for visiting the Myeik Archipelago . December to February offers the most beautiful and comfortable weather conditions – with warm, sunny weather, steady winds, and calm seas. There is less wind and higher temperatures in March and April, which also makes for clearer waters and the best time for diving and snorkeling.

From May to July there are strong onshore winds and a larger swell (with occasional hurricanes) and the rainy season is from June to October; cruises of the Archipelago do not operate from the beginning of May until the beginning of October. If storms do arrive during the monsoon, the region has numerous large islands which provide protected anchorages at any time of year – and in general the area provides safe sailing, with few dangerous reefs or obstacles.

Mergui Archipelago is considered as one of the best places for diving and snorkeling in Myanmar and in Asia in general. Endowed with the sparkling turquoise water and rich aquatic ecosystem of vivid coral reefs and a variety of exotic sea creatures, diving and snorkeling in Mergui are the not – to – be – missed activities. Owing to the isolated location, this island complex is still mysterious to many tourists, therefore, the diving sites here are very quiet and unspoiled. You can enjoy your discovery into the spectacular underwater world without the noise of the boat engine or the tourists. Some famous dive zones in Mergui are Burma Bank, Black Rock and Shark Cave which offer an amazing dive among the vibrant corals reefs and many chances to spot the unique sea species like Batfish, Moon Wrasse and Frogfish.  There are several diving and snorkeling operators in Mergui Archipelago that offer the good diving facilities and courses such as Andaman Dive Resort, A – One Diving and Asia Whale.

2. Swimming and Sun Bathing

If you want to explore further the island complex, to the secret sea caves and ancient mangrove creeks, sailing and kayaking are available.

The journey not only offers you a great discovery to the archipelago but also bring a lot of breath – taking landscapes. You can also have a chance to see some indigenous birds and reptiles when accessing to the mangrove forests.

4. Hiking and Jungle Trekking

mergui archipelago tour

The islands of Mergui Archipelago feature not only the stunning beaches but also lush vegetation of various flora and fauna which are worth to explore. Hence, owing to the fact that a large number of islands in this archipelago stay uninhabited, there are 2 notable places for you to discover: Macleod Island and Lampi Island.

The trek give you a chance to immerse in the beauty nature of exotic plants and unique animals. If you are lucky, you will see some of the globally - protected birds in Lampi island – the Burmese national marine park where more than 230 bird species nested in.

For someone who wish to have a spectacular panoramic view through the greenery forest and the deep blue sea, the hike will lead you to the top of the mountain. This is a great opportunity for you to catch the jaw - dropping sunset and capture some amazing photos.

5. Meeting the Moken - Sea Gypsies

mergui archipelago tour

The natives of the massive Mergui Archipelago are the Moken, so called Sea Gypsy who know for the incredible free diving skills and nomadic lifestyle. For centuries, they roam around the tropical islands by the Kabang (an indigenous boat) and live as hunters and gathers.

Meeting the Moken - Sea Gypsies is one of the most interesting activities in things to do in Mergui

Coming to Mergui Archipelago, tourists will have a chance to visit the villages of the Moken to experience their culture and their sea - based way of life.  You can try paddling the Kabang; observe the spear – fishing method, collect the food from the seabed and many more.

Myeik offers a bit of everything in this very mixed town: an interesting Indian, fine Thai, great Chinese, excellent Burmese, acceptable Western, great tea shops, a good coffee shop bakery and a wonderful rooftop bar.

White Pearl BBQ & Restaurant

Located across from the main waterfront on Strand road with a casual open air pub atmosphere, White Pearl BBQ is a favorite for travellers and expats living in Myeik. We had a great afternoon here over lunch and cold beers.

They have a large menu with plentiful BBQ options, and curiously, a delicious sashimi menu (rumor has it their chef worked in Japan for many years). We quite enjoyed the squid on ice, and our beers were notably nice and cold.

Address: White Pearl BBQ and Restaurant No14, Strand Roa

This friendly Bamar restaurant serves what is one of the richest, tastiest chicken curries we've come across yet, as well as a yummy prawn curry. Be sure to order one of the vegetable side dishes (K500) that change daily. All the food is on display, so just pick and point.

Kaq Kyi Kaiq

This hole-in-the-wall noodle vendor specialises in tasty kaq kyi kaiq: scissor-cut noodles fried with seafood in a wok over a wood fire. The shop is in the Muslim quarter (no roman-script sign), just down the road from a large blue mosque: you'll see people gathered around the wok.

Zan Pya is a small place serving heaped plates of delicious chicken biryani that often sell out early. Look for the large aluminum pots a couple of doors up from the OK Mobile store (there's no roman-script sign).

Myeik institution that serves bowls of kyè òu (noodles) and other noodle and rice dishes to hordes of locals. Look for the big white villa and the small English sign. There's outdoor seating, but no alcohol is served.

G Apparao Restaurant

This long-standing Muslim teashop serves good tea and a variety of freshly made snacks, as well as simple rice and noodle dishes. It never closes.

Green Eyes Cafe

Atmospheric teashop-restaurant located in a traditional wooden house. It's popular for tea and snacks, but also does curries, rice and noodle plates, and even a couple of Western-style dishes. Not much English spoken, but the staff are friendly. There's no sign; it's almost opposite the hotel of the same name.

Mergui Archipelago's accommodation scene has improved dramatically in recent years, although foreign visitors are relatively scarce compared to elsewhere in Myanmar. Most hotels and guesthouses are located close to the harbour and seafront. The cheapest places along Strand Rd aren't licensed to accept foreigners.

There are several ultra-basic "guesthouses" in the area around the main piers, a few of which accept foreigners. Often, conditions are grim and prices for foreigners are astronomical.

White Pearl Guesthouse

Add: Middle Strand Road, Talking Zu Quarter

Very newly opened guesthouse, with breakfast, friendly staff, but not too much English spoken here, except the owner.

Clean rooms, clean facilities, definitely good for the price! The owner also arranges bus tickets and trips to the archipelago.

Grand Jade Hostel

Add: 28 Baho Street, Myeik

Twin dorms with hot shower and fan for 12 USD per person are a new alternative. Although without breakfast it is a absolute steal with the great rooftop terrace. A little Indian shop offers better breakfast as the toast and jam from most of the hotels. The next door supermarket has great coffee from 1200 Kyats.

There are a couple of state run hotels.

There is a very comfortable Western-operated (French) hotel a couple of km out of town on the main road heading north-east; prices here are reasonable.

Dolphin Guest House

Add: on the main road from the airport.

Clean, breakfast included and relatively fast Wi-Fi (reception in room above dining area is best). Manual motor bikes can be rented here for c. MYK10,000 per day (09:00-18:00). Book the bike a day before - check your brakes work. Fuel c. MYK1,000/L (1L for c. 1.5h).

The Mergui Hotel

This hotel is a fair distance from the Strand Rd (tuk-tuk drivers will charge up to MYK4000 to get there) but is one of the nicer hotels in town and close to the airport (free shuttle service). It has fast Wi-Fi, a range of satellite channels and perfectly acceptable rooms.

Hotel Grand Jade

Add: 28 Baho Street, Myeik

Buffet breakfast on the roof top. Free pick up / drop off to airport and bus station if booked directly. Fine restaurant and half decent cocktail bar on the rooftop for relaxed evenings. cheapest minibar in whole Southern Myanmar. Professional travel agency it the lobby offering everything from day and overnight island trips to competent onward travel solutions

Mergui Archipelago Sailing – Myanmar (Burma)

Discover the unspoiled paradise and join our mergui archipelago sailing tour. it’s like a dream come true.

S ailing north from Phuket. Along the Similan and Surin Islands of Thailand, you enter the Mergui Archipelago of Myanmar (Burma). Also known as Myeik Archipelago. The islands are made of a mix of granite and limestone formations and are commonly covered by tropical rain forest. The Archipelago lies north of Thailand, on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula. They consist of more than 800 islands of different shapes and sizes. Totalling over hundreds of square kilometres!

The local people are mostly fishermen of the Moken, a tribe of Sea Gypsies. The Moken are sea-dwelling people. They live on many islands in the Andaman Sea, like Surin and Koh Lipe and even further south. They follow their traditional way of life since centuries. Their life is based on fishing, building boats, catching crabs and collecting food. Stunning wildlife covers many of the islands you are about to visit. You can find boar, deer, monkeys and a bewildering selection of tropical birds including a rare type of hornbill.

The Pristine Mergui Archipelago Sailing Tour

Opened to foreign tourism in 1997.

The area was only opened up to foreign tourism in 1997 after negotiations between Burma and dive operators from Phuket in Thailand. The archipelago’s isolation is such, that much of it has not even yet been thoroughly explored. Although a five-star casino and golf resort was opened on Thahtay Kyun Island. The islands are still pristine and very little affected by civilization as we know it. As of yet, there is next to no infrastructure or development. One of the only ways to visit these waters and some of the best dive sites in the world is by sailing with us.

mergui archipelago tour

Meet The Moken People

During your Mergui Archipelago Tour, you will get the unique opportunity to meet the Moken people. These guys are sea gipsies that live of the land. They live on many of the Andaman Islands such as Surin and Koh Lipe. They follow a traditional way of living that has been past down from generation to generation for centuries.

Mergui Archipelago Diving

The dive sites have exotic names like Big Bank, Rainbow Reef, Shark Cave and Silver Top Reef… just to name a few. Huge boulders interspersed with soft corals. Sea fans and the full assortment of underwater activities from conventional reef diving, wall diving to the exploration of underwater caverns and tunnels. All are just waiting to be explored. The marine inhabitants range from sharks to manta rays. Include exotic species like frogfish, ghost pipefish, ribbon eels and a magnificent array of crustacea. All in all, the Mergui Archipelago promises a unique and unforgettable sailing vacation!

The myeik (mergui) archipelago.

The gorgeous and remote Myeik (or Mergui) Archipelago lies in the Andaman Sea off the coast of southern Myanmar. To visit these extraordinary islands who will need to join a guided tour  and they remain  largely undiscovered by tourists , which is a big part of their appeal – indeed many of them are inhabitated only by colourful wildlife.

mergui archipelago tour

Made up of more than  800 islands  which vary in size from smaller ones with just a few palm trees to larger islands of several hundred square kilometres, the archipelago offers great opportunities for exploration  and diving amongst spectacular marine life  and untouched coral reefs , with yachts and cruise boats designed for that purpose.

It is not just the scenery (under water or over water) that makes the Myeik Archipelago such a fascinating place to visit: the  Moken people , also known as the  Salone  or  sea gypsies , are one of the most distinct of Myanmar’s many ethnic groups, living a nomadic, sea-based life here. Having adapted themselves to the water over many hundreds of years, they are the masters of  free diving , being able to focus their vision under water and hold their breath far longer than most humans can.

Island highlights

The islands of the Myeik Archipelago offer a wide variety of sights and adventurous activities, from hiking through tropical valleys to kayaking through mangroves and up rivers ; the opportunities for exploration are almost limitless. And if you are after a more laid back time, you can simply jump in the water from your boat or wander along any of the hundreds of deserted white sand beaches .

A hugely diverse range of wildlife can be found on the islands, including monitor lizards , pythons , civets , chevrotains , gibbons and crab-eating macaques . Up in the air, the colourful diversity is perhaps even greater: you can see hornbills , white-bellied sea eagles , while kites , kingfishers , eastern reef herons , emerald doves , to name but a few of the species that circle the islands.

There are far too many islands in the archipelago to describe here (and many have never been set foot on by foreigners), but here are some of the highlights:

  • Lampi Island . Established in 1995 as Myanmar’s first marine national park , Lampi is one of the most popular islands for visitors to the archipelago, rich as it is in biodiversity, mangroves and coral reefs. Lampi River  offers a great chance for kayaking – and to witness some of the area’s exotic flora and fauna. Lampi is  also known sometimes known as Sullivan Island or Kyun Tan Shey ('kyun' means island in Burmese ).

mergui archipelago tour

  • 115 Island .   Also known as Frost Island, this has a white sandy beach with crystal clear waters that are rich in hard coral and have thousands of sea urchins and small colourful tropical fish darting around. 115 Island offers opportunities for snorkelling, kayaking – and jungle trekking on the island itself.
  • Nyaung Wee Island (also known as Buda island) . Host to a number of Moken villages , visiting this beautiful area gives you the opportunity to talk to the locals and find out about their unique culture – and about their  changing way of life . Sadly, they are increasingly living in villages rather than on the water (sometimes having even having been forcibly moved to the mainland), as the government prohibited the traditional fashioning of their wooden boats from trees.
  • Phi Lar island .  Otherwise known as Great Swinton, this island has a number of totally uninhabited, white sand, palm-fringed beaches – and some particularly colourful coral reefs that are perfect for snorkeling.
  • Myauk Ni Island  provides another opportunity to chat with the islanders about their daily lives. They see very few tourists, mainly just the fishermen who come to buy what they need, and maybe have a drink. No trinkets or hard sell in this part of the world!

Diving and fishing

The Myeik Archipelago’s diversity above the waves is more than matched by life below the sea surface , showcasing an incredible variety of marine life – including Nurse, Grey Reef, and Bull sharks, as well as Eagle and  Manta rays,  Frogfish , Ribbon Eels and False Pipefish, to name just a few.

As with the islands, we have only listed a select few of the diving highlights here – there are dozens of fascinating and exciting sites throughout this vast area.

  • The Burma Banks . One of the most renowned dive sites in Southeast Asia , the huge Burma Banks (including Silvertip, Rainbow, Roe, Coral and Heckford banks) are located on the west side of the archipelago, where the continental shelf drops off into the deep sea beyond. For experienced divers, the open ocean diving here makes for a thrilling and diverse opportunity – and sightings of sharks are virtually guaranteed.
  • Black Rock .  This islet, located 100 miles northwest of Kawthaung , is a firm favourite of many divers who visit the archipelago: its steep rock cliffs act as a magnet for an abundance of marine life – most notably Silvertip , Whitetip and Blacktip sharks, as well as Manta rays and Sting rays.

mergui archipelago tour

  • Shark Cave .  Featuring three rocks that rise from 40 meters under the surface until they rise above waves, this area offers some of the best marine life in the archipelago, with huge shoals of colourful fish swimming around you – and it is so big it cannot all be seen in one dive. For experienced divers, there is a huge canyon to explore on the middle island, which leads to a cave which is guarded by Grey Reef sharks which sometimes lose their inhibition and swim up close to divers .
  • Little Torres Islands . A mix of spectacular red whip, mosaic and table corals can be found in the waters surrounding these islands, as well as Batfish and beautifully-colured Moon Wrasse .

Fishing in the archipelago

Whether it's barracuda, Spanish mackerel, tuna, snapper, or even marlin and sailfish, the archipelago offers the opportunity to enjoy catching your own dinner ! Many of the boats that sail here have their own fishing rods, but you are also free to bring your own. Local fishermen also catch cuttlefish and squid, which will often be bought by cruise boat crews and served fresh.

When to visit and sailing conditions

As with much of the rest of Myanmar , November to April is the high season for visiting the Myeik Archipelago. December to February offers the most beautiful and comfortable weather conditions – with warm, sunny weather, steady winds, and calm seas. There is less wind and higher temperatures in March and April, which also makes for clearer waters and the best time for diving and snorkeling.

mergui archipelago tour

From May to July there are strong onshore winds and a larger swell (with occasional hurricanes) and the rainy season is from June to October; cruises of the Archipelago  do not operate from the beginning of May until the beginning of October . If storms do arrive during the monsoon, the region has numerous large islands which provide protected anchorages at any time of year – and in general the area provides safe sailing, with few dangerous reefs or obstacles.

Permits, access and places to stay

A  special permit  is required to visit the Myeik Archipelago on a multi-day live aboard tour - it is obtained as part of a cruise package; processing is straightforward, but usually takes around one month to complete. It is not currently permitted for foreigners to travel to the islands independently, and there are naval patrols through the islands that check visitor documentation.

Taking a multi-day cruise, you will typically be met at  Kawthaung airport  by a representative, who will talk you through the deskful of required paperwork and then take you on to your boat. Most cruises have a  set itinerary , although this can change if the weather is poor. The crew will provide alternative places of interest, and you will have a guide to  explain everything to you  and to translate for conversations with the islanders.

MacLeod Island

There are three main places to stay on the islands of the archipelago, all at the southern end to the west of  Kawthaung : the  Myanmar Andaman Resort  on MacLeod Island; the nearby  Nyaung Oo Phee Resort , with luxury tent-style lodging; and the further out  Boulder Bay Eco Resort  on Boulder Island. They are open from October to the end of April and offer their own, limited, boat transport to the mainland - if you wish to arrange your own transport, it is very expensive. The  Grand Andaman Hotel , a Thai-owned, casino-focused hotel caters mostly to Thais and is located on an island across the water from Kawthaung.

It is now also possible to go on day trips  to the archipelago from Kawthaung and from the town of Myeik , further north - as well as multi-day trips with overnight camping on the islands. These are fun (and cheaper than live-aboard multi-day cruises) but it can take a long time to get to the outlying islands.

mergui archipelago tour

Referring to Myanmar tourism, people often think of ancient temples and pagodas, which are mainly concentrated in Yangon and northern Burma such as Bagan, Mandalay, or charming places like Inle Lake … Few people know its far south coast and sea. The farthest land of this country, the region bordering Thailand is the Mergui Archipelago (Myeik Archipelago), also known as the Virgin Islands, located in the Andaman Sea with more than 800 large and small islands, most of them uninhabited because of the far from the mainland and poor living conditions. Only a few people of the Moken ethnic group live nomadic life on the sea by fishing, hunting and gathering on desert islands. So, how to get to Mergui Archipelago (how to get to Mergui Islands) and what to do on Mergui Archipelago islands (Mergui Islands Burma, Mergui islands Myanmar, Nyaung Oo Phee Island)? Let’s check out our Mergui Archipelago Myanmar blog on how to go to Mergui Archipelago (Mergui Archipelago Burma), best things to do and suggested 2 perfect days and 1 night itinerary on the paradise islands of Myanamar below.

Overview of Mergui Archipelago Myanmar and how to get to Mergui Archipelago Myanmar (Mergui Islands Myanmar)?

mergui archipelago tour

Due to less development in tourism than the north, the roads and transportation in the south are also more difficult. To get to the Mergui Archipelago, you have to take the train from three main locations: One is Kawthaung, the farthest province of Burma bordering the Ranong province of Thailand. The second is Myiek province about 400km from Kawthaung, but especially there is no road, but you have to take a train or plane. Thirdly, Dawei province about 240 km from Myiek and can be reached Mergui Islands by bus.

Nok Air’s Bombadier Dash propeller plane arrived at Ranong Airport after an hour and a half from Bangkok:

mergui archipelago tour

Due to Horseshoe Island (an island of Mergui Archipelago Islands) is closest to Kawthaung, so I chose to fly from Bangkok to Ranong and then take a boat across the river to Kawthaung, although I previously booked a flight ticket to Yangon as scheduled to go to Bagan, Mandalay and Inle Lake. Finally, I canceled my ticket to Yangon just because I accidentally saw a charming photo of the island online by flycam (shown below) that attracted me to this place. Indeed it is so beautiful and peaceful!

mergui archipelago tour

It looks a bit like Maya Bay in appearance as well as the change in color of the seawater. But if I had a choice, I would choose this place. Simply because it is still untouched, has not been much touristized.

Two days and a night on the island of Horseshoe Island literally feels like getting lost on a paradise island, where there is no phone signal, no internet, no wifi, no noise of vehicles. But there is only a world of its own with very beautiful white sand beach, fresh air and whispering waves. Swaying in a hammock under the green coconut canopy, turning a few pages of the book, with sea breeze makes you fall asleep suddenly. At noon, go snorkeling, morning or afternoon kayaking to a few small islands to watch the sunrise, so romantic sunset. Or you can row out some rocky rapids to fishing, then catch snails and sea urchins and grilled them as food for drinking with friends.

mergui archipelago tour

An ideal place to relax and relieve stress, away from the noisy city and chaos of life. That is enough for the so-called happiness. Heaven is here but nowhere far. Let’s someone you love hold hands and go everywhere while you can!

Mergui Archipelago Islands: Before you go

mergui archipelago tour

  • Buy round-trip air tickets from Saigon (HCMC) to Bangkok, some cheap airlines: AirAsia, Nok Air. I chose night flights with Nok Air for both depart and return flight.
  • Buy flight tickets from Bangkok to Ranong of Nok Air with the earliest flight at 6:05AM and the latest flight 4:45PM. I chose the earliest flight.
  • Apply Evisa online to enter Myanmar by road (Land Border) with a bit expensive fee of $50 / person, valid for 28-day stay, so you can rest assured to explore. If you traveling by air from Yangon to Kawthaung, you do not have to apply for a visa. It does not accept an arrival visa, but you must apply online through this page: https://evisa.moip.gov.mm/
  • You need photo your passport and Evisa confirmation sheet (will be sent via email within 24 hours after paying online VISA fee), 2 copies of each, to provide entry customs of Ranong (Thailand) and entry customs of Kawthaung (Burma).
  • Book a 2 days 1 night tour on Horseshoe Island cost 5.900 Bath via this page: http://www.grandetravel.com/tour_detail.php?id=3
  • If you take the Horseshoe Island Tour of Grande Travel, you will get a discount on the 5-star Grand Andaman Hotel ( Agoda.com or Booking.com ) book to $80 / night, located on a beautiful island near Kawthaung with swimming pool, casino and customs do entry procedures right on the spot, no need to go to inland to get a seal to check-in, it is also convenient.
  • If you want to explore Kawthaung city, you should book hotels near the island pier. But there is a minus point that the whole city of Kawthaung often is cut off electricity at night, most of them run by generators, so at night, they only turn on the fan, not the air-conditioner.
  • Exchange money to Thai Bath, no need to exchange to Myanmar Kyat. It is very surprising that the Kawthaung people use Thai Baht in all transactions much more than the local currency (Kyat), so there is no need to exchange money to Kyat.

The details of the itinerary to Mergui Archipelago Myanmar

Day 1: fly to thailand.

  • 20:45PM flew with Nok Air from Saigon to Bangkok, 10:15PM arrived at Don Mueang airport.
  • Overnight at the airport.

Don Muang airport-bangkok-thailand2

Day 2: Crossing the river across two countries, from Ranong to Kawthaung – The farthest land of the country of Burma.

  • Took an early flight at 6:05AM to Ranong with Nok Air also, arrived in Ranong at 7:30AM.
  • Took the bus that parked at the airport entrance for THB200 / person, told the driver to the pier to Ko Tung (pronounced from Kawthaung).
  • Done procedures for exit Thailand right at the pier (not having to paid any cost).
  • Took a wooden boat across the river to get to Kawthaung of Myanmar for 100THB / person. Having visited the Thai border station located in the middle of the river to check the passport seal, the boat driver will collect the passports of each person and go up the station to do procedures for you, no need to step out of the boat to do this.

mergui archipelago tour

  • The boat ran about 30 minutes to reach the mainland of Kawthaung.
  • Stepped onto the pier is an immigration customs station. Went inside to do entry procedures to entering Myanmar (also do not pay anything).

mergui archipelago tour

  • Walking about 400m to check-in the Penguin Hotel .
  • Resting until 2PM and walked to the pier to rent a tuk-tuk to visit Kawthaung city, the places to go:

Palautonetone bridge: The 2km long wooden bridge across Palautonetone Island, on the island there is a fishing village and a same name restaurant selling seafood and local dishes and Thai dishes like Tom yum, Somtam are quite delicious. Sipping a few bottles of Burmese beer while watching the golden sandy beach with the sound of the murmuring waves is very interesting.

mergui archipelago tour

Listen to the tuk-tuk driver say palau means island, tonetone means to run wild (trotting). He said that in the past, when the bridge was not built, the island was wild, the girls here in the afternoon kept walking naked in front of the beach. Since then, it was named Palautonetone, a long name that is difficult to remember, difficult to write, so I kept remembering it was a “trotting island”.

mergui archipelago tour

Bayinnaung Park: This is a large park in Kawthaung, located on a high hill with a respectable monument to King Bayinnaung that all Myanmar people love. From this park, the view of the sea is very beautiful.

mergui archipelago tour

Victoria Point: Rounding out below Bayinnaung Park is the southernmost landmark of Burma like Vietnam’s Ca Mau Cape, called Victoria Point to commemorate the colonial war that the British occupied and colonized this land for 124 years from 1824 to 1948. This is also a beautiful place to watch the sunset, watching the sun set falling down into the sea very close.

mergui archipelago tour

Pyi Daw Aye Pagoda: This pagoda is also near the Penguin Hotel and can be reach through a slope about 300m. In the evening, the pagoda is very cool and clean, so many families bring their children here to play and worship Buddha. Due to the power is cut in my hotel, I also escaped up here to relax.

mergui archipelago tour

There are also many places to go if you have time:

  • Maliwan waterfall
  • Aung Thapyay Hot Spring
  • Mount 555: The highest view point in Kawthaung, where the panoramic view of the city and the sunset is very beautiful.

Tips: You should hire a tuk tuk to go for cheap, tuk-tuk here is different from in Thailand, the trailer is an old wave motorbike that can carry 4-5 people in the back bin. My group of 5 adults and 2 children, but the cute tuk-tuk driver stills accept. He took us to visit places like the above and only got 200 Baht, I felt sorry, so invited him to a restaurant and then gave him a bonus of 100 Baht.

mergui archipelago tour

While renting a motorbike is very expensive, asking at the hotel it costs 300 Baht for half a day, a whole day is 500 Baht, the most expensive among places I’ve ever visited. So, taking a tuk-tuk is cheap and fun, the funniest thing is when running over a wooden bridge, when going up the slope, I have to jump down to push to help the driver, especially when we were running to the middle of the bridge to avoid the opposite vehicles, looking scene made me lose heart.

We went to night market in the evening to eat street food, the food here is quite cheap, 100 Baht / person is full. After visiting the night market, we went to the beach to walk then came to the pagoda to feel sea breeze and then went back to the hotel to sleep early to get strength to go to the island tomorrow.

Day 3: Discover Mergui Archipelago Myanmar: Horseshoe Island & Emerald Heart Island

  • 8:30AM: We went to the pier to start the tour to explore the Mergui Islands.
  • After 1 hour and 45 minutes of riding by speedboat, we arrived at Horseshoe Island. Everyone gasped because of the beauty here. The clear, turquoise seawater clearly saw corals and fish wading below. The white bow-shaped beach, surrounded by mountains and forests behind, with a few small limestone islands in front. If you look at the photos and video clips shot with a drone from above, the island is shaped like a horseshoe. What a beautiful view!

mergui archipelago tour

  • After bringing the luggage on the island, we went to the beach for swimming and then had lunch. The food is quite a lot and delicious, there was a somtam dish with full ingredients, who want to eat, they can make their own taste.

mergui archipelago tour

  • 2PM, a canoe took us to diving in an equally beautiful island that is Cock’s Comb Island also known as Emerald Heart because inside the island is a giant heart-shaped lagoon with emerald water. The island is made up of towering limestone cliffs, so there is no beach around. If you want to enter the secret lagoon inside, you have to go through a single ravine about a few hands above sea level, then one by one jump down from the canoe, swing by rope to get inside to explore the heart lagoon. Snorkelling will easily see corals, sea anemones, sea urchin and countless fish, especially watching Nemo fish playing with coral clusters. A vivid picture under the ocean.

mergui archipelago tour

  • Then continue snorkeling at Coral Jungle, another small island nearby, seeing sea turtles and colorful coral reefs.

mergui archipelago tour

  • In the afternoon, on Horseshoe Island is a time of freedom, spoiled for relaxation in a beautiful place like a wild, calm paradise. Until now I still wish to return to soak in the clear cool water or to lie in a hammock to reading under the green canopy, listening to the wild birds singing.

mergui archipelago tour

  • At sunset time, we dragged the kayaks to the sea, paddle to some small islands in the distance, watched the sun slowly down from the top of the mountain until it sank into the sea.

mergui archipelago tour

  • In the afternoon, the tide receded, revealing corals and too much sea urchin below. We used the paddle to pick each one up to the kayak and bring back for dinner.
  • Meanwhile, the tour guides also came back by fishing boat, only keep the fish bigger than two-hand, the small fish are released, and the big squids were used as a seafood BBQ party that night.
  • At night, we garthered together, eat and drink, talk to each other, the atmosphere is very cozy. Drinking in the starry sky with Thai friends until the end of the last can of beer of the bar, then go back to the hut to sleep, take a deep sleep.

mergui archipelago tour

Day 4: Ta Fook Island

  • Got up early in the morning, jogged along the beach and watch the sunrise on the island.
  • Having breakfast, drink tea and coffee.
  • Then a speedboat took us to visit another beautiful island called Ta Fook Island. The color of the sea is emerald green, the sand is whiter and smoother than on the island of Horseshoe. The island also allows guests stay overnight in cute circular huts.
  • The last island we explored before returning to Ko Tung is Rope Island and South Bay. This island has a beautiful beach but does not allow guests to access, but only allows diving to see the surrounding coral because it is a border island with guards on it.

mergui archipelago tour

  • Before returning to Kawthaung to end the tour, the boat took us to the 5-star Grand Andaman Hotel located on an island near Kawthaung called Thahtay Kyun Island for us to relax in the swimming pool and have an afternoon buffet dinner at the restaurant with a west view, eating while watching the sunset is very romantic.

mergui archipelago tour

  • 7:00 pm, a large luxurious boat like a yacht, with air-conditioning took us to Kawthaung, ending the tour 2 days 1 night to explore the Mergui archipelago and spend the night on Horseshoe Island.

Day 5: Goodbye Kawthaung

  • 7:00 am, got up early to check-out the hotel, went to the pier to do exit procedures.
  • Got on the wooden boat to cross the river back to Ranong.
  • Riding to the middle of the river at the border post in Myanmar, located on a small islet, the boat docked to check the passport sign. Suddenly, the guard gave a sign to the men, including me, and check the pocket of my clothes and bags to see if there was something, I thought was a drug hidden? Because Burma was once a famous drug-producing place in the world. After reviewing nothing and then let us went.
