Best Overall

Jet off to more than 200 countries with this compact adapter in your luggage, and you can charge up all your gadgets. The classic slider design pushes out EU, UK, and US plugs, and you can rotate the pins for sockets in Australia or China. I appreciate how securely the plugs lock into place, and you must press a side button to retract them. You have a universal input socket, and Ceptics has included three USB-A ports on the bottom and two USB-C ports on the side. The USB-A ports can deliver a maximum charging rate of 15.5 watts, while the USB-C ports offer up to 18 watts (one PD and one QC 3.0).

The main problem is the lack of any grounding, which is meant to reduce the risk of an electrical shock if there's a fault, such as a loose wire inside a device with a metal case. ( This video explains grounding really well. ) Thankfully, there's overload protection with an 8-amp fuse, and it comes with a spare, but you should not use this adapter with any device that has a third metal ground pin on its plug.

Upgrade Pick

Zendure's all-in-one travel adapter is what I toss in my bag first for every trip. It has a boxy design with sliding toggles to switch between US, European, and British plugs. (It covers more than 200 countries.) There’s an auto-resetting fuse to protect your gadgets from power surges, and the Passport III has a 10-amp limit. The latest version also sports a funky, translucent design with a metallic finish (purple is best). Sadly, there's no grounding, so you shouldn't use this adapter with any device that has a third metal grounding pin on its plug.

There are four USB-C ports alongside a single USB-A port and an AC socket, so you can charge six devices simultaneously. Using gallium nitride technology, Zendure was able to increase the power output of the USB-C port to 65 watts, capable of fully charging a 13-inch MacBook Pro in under two hours. That means you can leave your laptop's charging brick behind (if it charges via USB-C). There’s support for the Power Delivery (PD) and Programmable Power Supply (PPS) standards (Samsung uses PPS in its flagship range), so it can fast-charge almost any phone or tablet. It’s expensive, but this travel adapter will satisfy even the most gadget-laden of travelers.

★ A Good Alternative : The OneWorld 65 ($69) sports a very similar design, the same 65-watt charging rate, and support for more than 200 countries. But it has three USB-C and two USB-A ports. It comes in white and has a 10-amp fuse with a replacement included. WIRED readers can also get a discount with the code OneWorld65_15%Off .

Budget Pick

With the capability to work in more than 150 countries, this affordable adapter from Epicka will do the job for most people. It has sliders you push to reveal the three most common international plugs—EU, UK, and US—and you can rotate the pins for sockets in Australia or China. This plug can recharge your power-hungry devices, like laptops and camera batteries, but there are four USB-A ports on the bottom and a 15-watt USB-C port on the side for phones, tablets, smartwatches, and Kindles. It’s not as well constructed as our other universal adapter picks, but it's much cheaper.

Once again, there’s no grounding here, so don’t plug devices with a third metal ground pin into this adapter, but there is an 8-amp fuse for safety, and it comes with a spare. It is also certified by RoHS, CE, and FCC.

Best Travel Adapter Set

Universal adapters don't always work properly everywhere, and most do not have any grounding. The cheaper and more reliable alternative is to buy individual adapters. This international set from Ceptics is our favorite. It includes five types to cover most of the globe, and they are properly grounded. If you’re visiting only a single destination, just pack the relevant type. None of these adapters have any kind of USB ports, so you will need to bring the respective charging adapter for your gadgets.

This set is especially good for Europe, because it includes Type C, E/F, and G adapters (more on this below), so you’re covered for any socket. Ceptics offers an even cheaper and smaller five-piece set, but we don’t recommend it. The adapters are flimsy, there’s no grounding, and the European plug's design doesn’t work well with the recessed sockets you will sometimes encounter. The drawback of plug adapters is that they’re easy to lose, but at least Ceptics includes a small bag for storage.

OneBeat Travel Adapter

Extra Outlets

What I love about this sturdy, compact plug adapter is the lack of sliding pins or moving parts to worry about and that it stays put in the outlet. Offered in several versions (Type C, Type E/F, Type G), it enables you to charge up to six gadgets. I’ve been testing the Type G model in Scotland, and it plugs into a single outlet to give you three US outlets, a USB-C port, and two USB-A ports. The USB-C can put out up to 15 watts, and the USB-A ports are limited to 12 watts, not especially speedy but fine for overnight charging. The adapter is grounded and has various safety features.

On the downside, it can be tough to make use of all the outlets simultaneously as larger plugs, like the MacBook power adapter, tend to block one of the other US outlets. It does not offer surge protection, and the Type G adapter maxes out at 3,250 watts (250 volts, 13 amps), while the EU versions top out at 2,500 watts.

Ceptics World Travel Adapter Kit

For Charging Everything

This kit includes multiple plug attachments that slide and lock into place to keep you powered across most of the world. It is much larger than the average adapter, but provides two grounded US AC outlets. There is also a built-in USB-C cable, two USB-A ports, and two USB-C ports. The USB-A ports and built-in USB-C cable offer a combined maximum charging rate of 15 watts. The PD USB-C ports go up to 20 watts each. The top charging rate for all of them simultaneously is 55 watts.

There is built-in surge protection, but this is not a voltage converter, so don’t go plugging in hair dryers or other electronics that are not dual voltage. While the two AC outlets are handy, they are close together, so the shape and size of some plugs can make it tricky to use both. But with the ability to charge up to seven devices, this kit is handy. We also like the original Ceptics World Travel Adapter Kit ($36) , though it lacks the two USB-C ports.

OneAdaptr OneWorld 100

Fast Charging

With a familiar sliding pin design, this adapter also covers more than 200 countries. Taller and heavier than our top pick, this is OneAdaptr’s most powerful release to date, and it employs gallium nitride technology to deliver up to 100 watts. Aside from the universal AC outlet, you will find two USB-C ports and two USB-A ports on the bottom. Both USB-C ports offer 100-watt charging, and both USB-A ports are 18 watts, but 100 watts is the maximum in total, so when you plug in multiple devices, it divides between them.

Almost every charging standard you can think of is supported, including PD 3.0, QC 4+, FCP, SCP, AFC, PPS, and more, so there’s a good chance you can charge your phone at the fastest rate possible. There is no grounding, so don’t plug in any gadget with a third metal pin. But there is a 10-amp fuse with a spare included, and this adapter conforms to IEC 60884, CE, and FCC standards. If you want more power or feel you can make do with less, we also tested and liked the OneWorld135 ($109) and the OneWorld30 ($39) .

Note : We have tested OneAdaptr’s range extensively and found they work well, but the company has had issues fulfilling orders, and we are concerned about the volume of negative reviews online. The company assured us that it has recently taken steps to improve fulfilment and customer service, and we will continue to monitor the situation.

OneWorld PD travel adapters

Safest Option

The OneWorld PD has sliding toggles on the side that cover the US/Canada, the UK, and Australia/China, and you can pop out a much smaller stand-alone European adapter. It promises to work in more than 150 countries. There are three USB-A ports on the bottom as well as a USB-C port that supports Power Delivery and Quick Charge 3.0 to deliver up to 18 watts. That's enough to fast-charge most phones and tablets, not so much a laptop. You can plug in your laptop's AC charger to speedily juice it back up, but that means carrying the heavy charging brick around.

What sets the AC plugs apart is that each one is earthed. Most universal travel adapters offer two-pin US plugs and make the third pin on the UK plug plastic, but the OneWorld PD provides fully grounded connections for every plug type to protect you from the risk of shock due to faulty wiring. It can handle up to 10 amps. Over-current protection automatically shuts down the power if there’s abnormal usage, and it resets via a button on the top. The rare British Standard 8546 compliance guarantees that the OneWorld PD has been fully tested and is one of the safest travel adapters you can buy. The downside? It's frequently out of stock.

Note : We have tested OneAdaptr's range extensively and found they work well, but the company has had issues fulfilling orders and we are concerned about the volume of negative reviews online. The company assured us that it has recently taken steps to improve fulfilment and customer service and we will continue to monitor the situation.

RapidX Modula 5 Wireless Charging System

For Wireless Charging

A few of the best wireless chargers can be good choices for travel. This modular system from RapidX is compact and capable of wirelessly charging two phones at up to 10 watts each, which makes it a good option for couples or families. The beauty is that you can add or remove pods, and a single charging cable can power up to five. They snap together magnetically and pull apart for easy packing. You can also get additional phone pods ($15) , and there’s a version with a phone pod and an Apple Watch pod ($45) .

You get a 30-watt US power adapter and a 5-foot USB-C cable in the box, so you will still want a travel adapter to pair with this system. If you plan to add pods, you will want a more powerful adapter. (RapidX recommends 65 watts or above for three or more devices.)

Mophie 3in1 travel charger kit

For Apple Devices

This handy trio of chargers keeps your iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods ticking and folds neatly into a felt carrying case for travel. The magnetic pad in the center can charge your iPhone at the fastest 15-watt rate, the Apple Watch dock pops up for Nightstand mode (sadly no fast charging here), and there is a grooved spot for your AirPods. It is compact and lightweight, and charges all three devices from a single cable and outlet. A 30-watt US wall adapter and a short USB-C to USB-C cable are included, but you must pair this with a travel adapter. We recommend this Mophie charger for travelers in our guide to the  best Apple 3-in-1 wireless chargers .

Type C outlets

International Plug Types and Universal Adapters

There are 15 plug types in use across the world. Type A and Type B are used in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Japan; Type C is common across Europe, South America, and Asia; Type E and Type F are found across Europe in places like Germany, Russia, and France; Type G is used in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and a handful of other places; and Type I is used in Australia, New Zealand, China, and Argentina. Universal adapters tend to cover all of these types.

Some countries are not usually covered by universal adapters, such as India ( Type D ), Israel ( Type H ), and South Africa ( Type M or N ). You'll need to buy specific plug adapters for those places. To avoid any surprises when you land, double-check what type you need before you travel.

If you're visiting just one destination, a basic plug adapter that caters to one plug type is all you need. For trips to multiple destinations or for frequent flyers, a universal travel adapter can prove more versatile. The universal adapters we recommend here have the bonus of including multiple USB ports for charging several mobile devices from a single outlet.

phones plugged into power strip

A Word on Voltage Converters

Voltage converters are big, heavy, and expensive, and they don’t always work, so it’s probably best not to buy one. The reason you might think you need one is that the AC sockets on all of our recommended travel adapters do not convert the voltage coming from the socket. This means plugging into a UK socket will deliver 220 volts at 50 hertz, which is very different from the 120 volts at 60 hertz you can expect in the US. Don't worry! Your gear won't get fried. You just need to make sure anything you plug into one of these universal travel adapters has something like this printed on it:

Input: 100–220V 50/60Hz .

That should include most modern gadgets. If your device or charger can’t handle a variable voltage, it’s probably best to leave it at home. Most places provide hair dryers , irons, and kettles, so there’s no need to take them with you. It's often cheaper to buy a set with the correct plug at your destination and save the luggage space and hassle.

Essential packing for any international traveler

TripSavvy / Chloe Jeong

Travel overseas comes with its share of logistical challenges. Charging your devices in Greece or Sweden shouldn't be one of them. Travel adapters allow an electronic device from one country to plug into a differently shaped outlet. For example, U.S. wall outlets require a plug with two flat vertical prongs, while outlets in the U.K. require a plug with a top vertical prong and two bottom horizontal ones. One major heads-up: most adapters do not convert electricity from one voltage to another, which may be a requirement depending on where you're headed.

When selecting products, we considered supported destinations, the number of USB ports, and different price points.

A travel adapter helps charge your electronic devices on the go, whether you're taking a short trip across the pond or hopping on a worldwide adventure. The Epicka Universal USB Travel Power Adapter offers support for more than 150 countries, including the U.S., Australia, and most of Europe. The universal input design allows a multitude of plug options. The inclusion of four USB-A ports on its front and a USB-C port allows the charging of six devices at a single time. The first set of USB-A ports charge at 2.4 amps, making it ideal for tablets, cameras, and phones for faster charging, while the remaining two ports charge at 2.1 amps, making them better suited for phones only. The adapter's versatility and compact size saved our reviewer from overpacking. Our tester also appreciated the bonus iPhone charger that comes included.

As with many universal adapters, the Epicka is designed with 110-volt devices in mind, so it's not recommended for higher-powered appliances such as hair dryers or flat irons.

Built-in surge protection

Easy to pack

Easy to use

No USB ports

Traveling outside the U.S. with high-powered electronic devices is always a bit tricky as you need to convert the voltage from 220-240 volts to 110-120 volts. Fortunately, there are options like the Bonazza All-in-One Adapter and Converter, which do exactly that, making travel in more than 150 countries much easier. This all-in-one option offers the comfort of knowing you can use higher-powered devices, such as a hair dryer, without risking a blown fuse.

Beyond hair dryers, this adapter/converter combo is suitable for popular items such as iOS devices, laptops, straighteners, and more. For the input itself, the Bonazza only accepts U.S. standard-type plugs, not international varieties. At just 3 inches and 7.2 ounces, it's also an ultra-portable choice. Our reviewer appreciated the compact size and accompanying travel pouch, noting that it "makes it easy to keep the adapter clean." Our tester also found the adapter incredibly simple, a real bonus compared to other devices.

Best for Apple Users

Apple travel adapter kit.

Built to last

Reduces overall tech load

Trusted company

Not a standalone option

Most of us have strong opinions about our tech gear, especially when it comes to an iconic brand like Apple. If you are a supporter and own several of their products or even just a MacBook, this is a great complementary set of adapters. These plugs use the Apple power adapter brick as a base, so you'll need to have that already for this kit. It contains seven AC plugs with laser-etched labels for quick identification and covers many tourist destinations including Japan, Australia, Europe, Korea, Brazil, and more. As with any brand, there is peace of mind knowing that the accessories come from the same manufacturer for smooth and secure functioning. And, we appreciate that the price range fits right in with the other picks on our list.

When international adventure calls, be prepared with the Epicka Universal Travel Adapter . Its universal input design, USB-A, and USB-C ports simultaneously support up to six devices in over 150 countries. For the ultralight backpacker or the occasional jet-setter, the Jmfone Travel Adapter is a smart, budget-friendly choice.

What to Look For in a Travel Adapter

Destination.

If you want to cut down on bulk, go for a streamlined, single-type converter, though it might only work in some regions. On the other hand, universal adapters will be effective no matter where you wind up—so if you’re a frequent jet-setter, this might be the best option.

There are other benefits to choosing a lighter product, depending on the space you'll be staying in once you arrive. "Because some hotels and homes have outlets in the most unusual locations, make sure that the adapter is not too large or heavy to fit into sunken sockets," says Charlie Cotton, head of operations at millennial group travel company FTLO Travel.

Newer converters now come with USB ports, eliminating the need for the USB-to-outlet converter for charging tablets and phones. In most cases, this means that you can charge more than one device at a time, which is handy for families—everyone’s gadgets definitely add up on the road—or those traveling with multiple devices .

Forking over a ton of money for a converter you’ll only use once a year doesn’t make sense, so go for a price that correlates with how often you travel. That said, buying one before you leave for vacation is almost always cheaper than on the ground.

Many countries use a single plug type throughout. To ensure your adapter is compatible, you must identify the plug type used in the country or countries on your itinerary. World Standards shares a map that details plug types for every country.

A universal adapter allows you to take your devices worldwide with one compact adapter that fits a variety of outlets. A plug adapter fits a single country’s outlets.

A plug adapter updates the shape of your device’s plug to fit the outlet in the country you’re traveling to. It doesn’t convert voltage. A voltage converter adapts the electrical voltage from the device to the outlet. This is valuable because American devices sometimes operate at a different voltage than is available in other countries.

Looking for a compact and powerful charger that can handle three devices at once? The Anker 735 Charger (Nano II 65W) might be the perfect fit. While it packs slightly less of a punch than the UGREEN Nexode 140W , its surprisingly affordable price tag makes it a compelling choice.

Two USB-C ports offer up to 40W and 12W when fully loaded and up to 65W for a single device, ensuring fast charging for most laptops, phones, and handhelds like the Steam Deck . You can even power up a low-power gadget like headphones or a camera, thanks to the third USB-A port. And rest assured, Anker's reliability and advanced features like GaN technology keep your devices protected and efficiently charged.

The Anker 735 Charger is the perfect option for fueling three devices simultaneously, provided you don't have high-powered gadgets like gaming laptops or larger MacBook Pro models in your roster.

Whether you need to charge two laptops at once or power four devices simultaneously, this 100W 4-port charging block from UGREEN has you covered. It not only frees up valuable outlets but also minimizes clutter on your power strip or bag thanks to its GaN technology and foldable plugs.

The UGREEN Nexode 100W USB-C GaN Charger delivers the full 100W when charging a single device, making it suitable for everything from 13-inch to 15-inch laptops. The remaining ports will keep your smartwatch and other peripherals consistently charged.

Equipped with two USB-C ports for laptops or tablets and extra USB-C and USB-A ports for phones, headphones, and other low-powered devices, the UGREEN Nexode 100W keeps all your devices powered while using only one outlet.

  • Smaller size

Q: Are multiport USB chargers safe?

Multiport USB chargers are safe if they are certified. Always stick with trusted brands like Anker, UGREEN, and Belkin, and look for UL, FCC, or CE certifications to ensure the charger meets electrical standards.

Q: Will a multiport charger charge all my devices at the same speed?

Not necessarily. Multiport chargers share their power among devices, so speeds vary. Check the individual port wattage and device charging needs to avoid slow charges, and make sure to connect power-hungry devices to ports with the most juice.

Q: What is the difference between a multiport charger and a USB hub?

A multiport charger provides power, allowing you to charge multiple devices like phones, tablets, and even laptops. On the other hand, a USB hub expands the number of data transfer ports on your laptop, connecting devices like external hard drives, keyboards, or external displays.

Q: What sort of wattage should I look for in my multiport charger?

Pick your wattage based on your tech arsenal. Power-hungry laptops (think 15" and up) might crave 65W or more, while smaller laptops and tablets enjoy 30-60W. For most phones and accessories, 15–30W is enough for high-speed charging. Always choose a charger whose total wattage exceeds your combined needs.

Charging bricks are getting more powerful

Multi-device chargers are perfect for travel, travel adapters are great for international trips.

Keeping all of your gadgets charged can be one of the most stressful parts of traveling. Nobody wants to pack half a dozen charging bricks in their bag, and using the same chargers you keep around the house means undoing and redoing your home charging setup every time you go on a trip. Here are some travel-focused chargers that will make your life easier.

  • Charging bricks
  • Multi-device chargers
  • Travel adapters

If all you need to power on your next trip is your phone or tablet, you can easily get by with a simple charging brick. While the one that comes with your device works just fine, the ones listed below offer higher output than what's typically included with a phone, partially thanks to the advent of gallium nitride technology (GaN), which allows for high output charging in significantly smaller chargers compared to silicon.

RAVPower Pioneer 90W GaN Charger

RAVPower's newest GaN brick is an incredibly compact way to push a whopping 90W of power to your devices. It's certified for both USB-PD 3.0 and Quick Charge standards, and the output can be split evenly between the two USB-C ports so you can even charge two laptops in a pinch.

Anker PowerPort Atom PD 1

The Power Port Atom 1 is roughly the size of a regular phone charging brick but outputs up to 30W with USB Power Delivery, taking full advantage of GaN tech. The plug doesn't fold, but it's small enough to still be easily packable.

Aukey Minima 30W GaN

Aukey's GaN charging brick is about as compact as it gets. It pushes 30W over USB-C to your phone, tablet, or even a Nintendo Switch, and despite its small size, the prongs still fold in for easier travel. The small size also means you should be able to plug multiple bricks into a power strip without an issue.

It's easy to get lost in the seemingly infinite selection of chargers on Amazon, but the bricks listed above should be on your shortlist if you're only looking to charge your phone while you're out. GaN has allowed even tiny charging bricks to deliver loads of power, which is great news since batteries in phones are getting increasingly bigger and more power-hungry.

Satechi 108W Desktop Charger

The Satechi desktop charger is bulky and pricey, but it's a fantastic option for keeping multiple gadgets topped up. The top USB-C port is great for powering laptops with a 90W output, and the second USB-C port works for phones and tablets at 18W. It also features two USB-A ports, each at 2.4A, and while large, it's still small enough to fit in most bags.

Anker PowerPort Atom PD 4

The PowerPort Atom PD 4 is even pricier than Satechi's desktop charger, but it has one distinct advantage: its two USB-C ports can distribute power evenly, allowing you to push 50W through each port. If you're charging devices that charge at different rates, the Atom can also intelligently distribute the power accordingly, so long as the total doesn't exceed 100W.

Aukey Omnia 65W Dual-Port

Aukey's GaN charger features both USB-C and -A ports with 45W Power Delivery when both ports are in use. On its own, the USB-C port can output the charger's full 65W speed, which is more than enough to charge most 13-inch laptops, tablets, and other portable devices. It's also slim and light enough to toss into any bag or even a pocket.

With the advent of travel adapters, you don't need to bring multiple converting plugs with you just to charge multiple devices. Each travel adapter is a relatively small brick with options for various international outlets, along with a few USB-A and Type-C ports so you don't need to pack extra charging bricks.

Zendure Passport GO

The Passport GO, currently on Kickstarter, allows you to plug your chargers into virtually any outlet in the world. More importantly, it has three USB-A ports and a USB-C port built-in with 30W Power Delivery, thanks to GaN technology. This means that depending on the power needs of your devices, you could leave your bulky chargers at home.

EPICKA All in One Worldwide Wall Charger

Epicka's travel adapter doesn't have gallium nitride tech inside, but it still boasts four USB-A ports, each with 2.4A output, along with a USB-C port on the side that's capable of 3A charging. It's available in several stylish colors, including rose gold (a personal favorite of mine), and supports standards for the EU, U.K., U.S., and Australia.

Glamfields Travel Adapter

The Glamfields travel adapter has three USB-A ports rated at 2.4A and a 5V/3A USB-C port. It adapts for use in the EU, U.S., U.K., and Australia, and has an auto-resetting permanent fuse that disconnects automatically when a high current is detected, preventing your chargers from getting fried. The AC port supports up to a whopping 1500W, meaning you'll have absolutely no trouble charging your laptop late at night.

GaN has made it an amazing time to buy a charger

Gallium nitride has been a breakthrough technology when it comes to fitting high-output charging into a small, portable form factor. If you need proof, just look at the RAVPower Pioneer , a small charging brick with enough output to power most laptops. It's a bit pricy for a single-port brick, but it's a heck of a lot more compact than other similarly high output chargers — and if you still want a better deal, there are plenty of cheaper bricks with slightly lower output.

When you're traveling with multiple devices, though, a single-port charging brick often isn't enough, no matter how much output it offers. The portable multi-port chargers listed above are great for powering your laptop, tablet, phone, and accessories all at once; our pick is the Satechi 108W Dual Type-C Travel Charger , which looks sleek and charges four devices at the same time, including two USB-C ports with Power Delivery.

If you're planning a trip to a foreign country, packing the right charger becomes a bit more involved. The plugs are often different from what you're used to, and far too often the solution for many is to buy half a dozen region-specific adapters that convert your plugs into the appropriate shape without doing much else. That's where travel adapters come in — we're big fans of the Epicka Travel Adapter , which incorporates gallium nitride for higher output charging in the same small form factor, and features USB-A and -C ports that allow you to charge multiple devices from a single outlet.

The smart digital display keeps you in the loop with how much battery is left in the power bank. Charge your iPhone in less than 45 minutes and power up two other devices at the same time.

Although there isn’t an LED display to show the percentage of battery left, there are indicator lights to track the power level. It’s designed to prevent over-charging, short circuiting, and temperature control while using as well, so you can have peace of mind if you need to step away. In general, it takes approximately two and a half hours to recharge this portable device.

Best With A/C Outlet

Sinkeu portable laptop phone charger.

For a power bank with an actual built-in plug, the SinKeu 65 Watt Portable Laptop Phone Charger is our top pick because of its portability and versatility. This power bank is fantastic for charging laptops, tablets, and other compatible devices like certain camera batteries (65 watts and under) that need a typical plug port. The 12V port is great for recharging speakers and other devices that require that output, while the 5V port is perfect for refueling your cell phone up to eight times before needing to be recharged itself. For compatible laptop models, it can provide a full charge twice, making this a great option for travelers with a wide array of devices. The included cigarette lighter plug makes it possible to recharge this power bank in your car as well. To fully recharge, it takes approximately four hours.

We love the colors and size of the Charmast Small Portable Charger that can easily fit in your pocket or purse. This charger has the ability to be fully recharged within an hour and a half when using a 9V-2A fast charger (or three hours with a standard one). Although it doesn’t have the capacity to fully power your smartphone back to 100 percent, it can provide up to 65 percent charge which is a great option for most travelers who just need to top up a device throughout their journey. It can, however, recharge AirPods up to six times. With no additional cords needed, plug it directly into your phone’s lightning port (and it’s also offered with a USB-C instead for Google, Samsung or iPhone 15 devices). With colors like pink, green, blue, orange, black, and white, you can match this portable charger to your phone’s case (or whatever suits your mood!)

With three included cords, this universal charger is ideal for all types of phones, and you won’t have to bring additional cords along on your adventures. Most phones can be charged between two and a half to four times before needing to recharge the power bank. The included “Intelligent Power Management IC” makes sure your devices will be protected from short circuit, overheating, and overcurrent issues while in use. Another great feature is that you can charge your phone from the power bank while also charging the power bank from the wall plug.

The Details: 6.29 x 2.95 x 0.6 inches | 12.1 ounces |  10,000 mAh | Micro USB, AC (input); Lightning, USB-C, Micro USB (output)

Tips for Buying Portable Chargers

Consider charge potential and timing.

When shopping for a portable power bank, one of the main features to look out for is the capacity for fully charging your devices, especially your smartphone. If you have long travel days with little opportunity to plug your phone in and your backup charger can only offer half a charge to top it off, that may not work for you. Another thing to consider is how long it will take to recharge each of your important devices, as well as the length of time it will take to recharge the power bank itself. Most people can recharge a power bank overnight if it takes more than a couple of hours, but you need to look at your precise needs while on the go.

Decide how much capacity you need

All of the numbers referring to capacity in mAh and watt hours can be a little tricky to understand when deciding what you’ll need. The term mAh means “milliampere-hour” and measures the units of electric charge, or how much power it can hold. This will be the difference between being able to charge just one device at a time versus multiple, and/or charging your phone multiple times or even a laptop at all. If you just need to top off your phone and keep it from getting to zero percent, something below 5,000mAh should do the trick. If you need to charge your phone constantly or have more than one device, something more than 10,000mAh might be for you.

Since the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) have rules for rechargeable batteries and power banks measured in the max watt hours allowed, you’ll need to know how to convert the mAh listed for the power bank or charger into watt hours to see if your device can come along with you. To do this, you’ll need to multiply milliamp hours by volts then divide by 1,000. So, if you take the Eggtronic Laptop Power Bank listed above, it’s 20,000mAh at 5V, making it equivalent to 100 watt hours.

The FAA and TSA state that any spare battery with more than 100 watt hours or 27,000mAh needs to have approval from the airline.

Look at the types and numbers of ports

One of the most important aspects of choosing a power bank is to make sure it will be compatible with your devices. The last thing you want is to purchase a back-up charger that’s only suitable for an iPhone when you have an Android. There are numerous options that offer more than one type of port. The most common inputs and outputs are USB-A and USB-C, as well as lightning ports (for Apple devices). Some models offer a wall plug or cigarette lighter adapter as well, perfect for those who need to charge a device from the car or have to charge something with a physical plug.

It’s important to note that regulations will have lightning ports outdated for future iPhones due to the European Union’s ruling that all smartphones need to have the USB-C charging port in common.

A portable charger or power bank is a great back-up solution to ensure you don’t run out of battery on your devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. They provide an extra lithium-ion battery-powered source that can connect to a wide array of devices, depending on their ports or magnetic charging capabilities. When connected, they transfer their stored energy to the electronic device plugged in. Typically, they are small enough to fit in your bag without taking up too much space, and some are even compact enough to fit in your pocket.

Yes, it’s possible to bring most portable chargers on an airplane, though there are restrictions to abide by: it’ll have to stay in your carry-on luggage that you’ll have with you in the cabin, as it can’t be in a checked bag. It also can’t possess more than 100Wh (watt-hours) or 27,000 mAh capacity. If your power bank has a larger capacity than this, you’ll need approval from the airline.

The Best USB Phone Charger

Our picks for best USB phone charger displayed on a pink surface next to an iphone with a charging cable plugged in.

By Sarah Witman and Nick Guy

If you’ve ever scrambled out the door with your phone’s battery in the red, you know that power is precious, and the faster you can get it, the better. The Anker PowerPort III Nano is the best option for charging any phone fast: It’s tiny and inexpensive, and it can get a fully drained phone battery to more than 50% full in half an hour.

USB-C chargers can top up phones faster than older USB-A models can, and they work with both iPhones and Android devices. Most phones, handheld game consoles, and other devices that charge via USB-C come with a compatible charging cable, but otherwise you may have to buy a cable separately .

Everything we recommend

multi usb travel charger

Anker PowerPort III Nano

The best single-port usb-c phone charger.

This small and inexpensive charger will fast-charge any phone, including iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, and Google Pixel handsets. But it has only one port.

Upgrade pick.

Belkin Boost Charge Pro 45W Dual USB-C Wall Charger

The best two-port usb-c phone charger.

This charger’s two USB-C ports let you charge a phone and another small device at top speed. It’s not as compact as single-port chargers, but it has a fold-up plug and a pocketable shape.

RAVPower PD 30W 2-Port USB-C Fast Charger (RP-PC144)

The best charger with usb-c and usb-a ports.

This model has fast-charging USB-C and USB-A ports that provide maximum power no matter what cable you use, together in one small and reliable charger.

multi usb travel charger

Anker PowerPort 4

Best for charging lots of gear.

Affordable, quick, and compact, this charger can provide fast power to as many as four devices at once, although not at the maximum speeds USB-C offers.

If you want the smallest power brick available that’ll charge your phone at the fastest speeds, we recommend the single-port Anker PowerPort III Nano . It’s the same size as Apple’s 5-watt charger (the one that Apple used to include in iPhone boxes), and it supplies up to 20 W over USB-C.

That’s enough power to charge most phones—whether you have an iPhone, a Samsung Galaxy model, a Google Pixel handset, or some other Android phone with fast-charging capabilities—more than halfway full in just 30 minutes. This model also powers Apple’s MagSafe wireless charging system at its maximum 15 W.

  • Port one: 20 W USB-C
  • Dimensions: 1.2 by 1.1 by 1.1 inches
  • Cable: 6 feet, C-to-Lightning (compatible with iPhone 14 and earlier)

Although it costs about twice as much as of this writing, and doesn’t include a cable, the Boost Charge Pro 45W Dual USB-C Wall Charger outpaces our top pick in several key ways. Its two USB-C ports have a combined maximum output of a whopping 45 W, so you can fast-charge two small devices at once (such as an iPhone and an Apple Watch) or one larger device (such as an iPad Pro).

It’s slightly heavier than our top pick but still weighs just a few ounces, and its folding plug and rounded edges make it easy to pack in a pocket or purse.

  • Port one: 45 W USB-C (or 25 W when both ports are in use)
  • Port two: 45 W USB-C (or 20 W when both ports are in use)
  • Dimensions: 1.8 by 1.6 by 1.5 inches
  • Cable: none

The RAVPower PD 30W 2-Port USB-C Fast Charger (RP-PC144) is more powerful than the smaller Anker PowerPort III Nano. Its USB-C port can charge at up to 30 W, and its USB-A port allows you to charge a second device at up to 18 W (when both ports are in use, the charger has a total maximum output of 30 W). In our testing, the USB-C port charged a phone to 85% in an hour, compared with 70% from the USB-A port.

  • Port one: 30 W USB-C (or 18 W when both ports are in use)
  • Port two: 18 W USB-A (or 12 W when both ports are in use)
  • Dimensions: 1.9 by 1.9 by 1.2 inches
  • Cable: 3 feet, C-to-Lightning (compatible with iPhone 14 and earlier)

The Anker PowerPort 4 is the model to choose if you carry a lot of gear—say, a phone, a smartwatch, a power bank, and Bluetooth headphones—or if you’re traveling with companions. Each of its four ports supports a 12 W power draw, as fast a charge as you can get from standard USB-A. No other reliable four-port charger packs that kind of power into such a diminutive size and at such a low price.

  • Port one: 12 W USB-A
  • Port two: 12 W USB-A
  • Port three: 12 W USB-A
  • Port four: 12 W USB-A
  • Dimensions: 2.6 by 2.6 by 1.1 inches

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, how we picked and tested, our pick: anker powerport iii nano, upgrade pick: boost charge pro 45w dual usb-c wall charger, also great: ravpower pd 30w dual port compact 2-port usb c fast charger (rp-pc144), also great: anker powerport 4, other good usb-c chargers, what to look forward to, the competition.

I’ve been a science journalist for nearly a decade, covering a wide variety of topics from particle physics to satellite remote sensing. Since joining Wirecutter in 2017, I’ve reported on USB-C cables , power banks , surge protectors , and more.

The current version of this guide builds on years of work by Wirecutter’s Nick Guy, who has reviewed mobile accessories since 2011 and covered them for Wirecutter for over six years.

If the USB charger that came with your phone or tablet is broken or lost—or, as in the case of the iPhone 12 or newer, it never came with one—a new third-party charger may be the most cost-effective replacement. But even if you still have the original chargers for all your devices, you might want to consider something that can charge your devices from a wall outlet more quickly, or charge multiple devices at the same time.

Most people have multiple devices that charge via USB—tablets, smartphones, power banks, e-readers, portable speakers, Bluetooth headphones, fitness trackers, and more—which frequently need to be recharged at the same time. Good multiport chargers cost only a little more than single-port chargers and aren’t much larger. If you think you might take advantage of a second port, they’re worth a few dollars extra, but you’ll save money and reduce bulk with a single-port model.

Multiport chargers are also great for travel. Instead of having to pack a gaggle of chargers for the family—or when you’re traveling alone, for your phone, tablet, headset, and Bluetooth speaker—you can bring one charger that handles everything. (Of course, you’ll have to pack the appropriate USB-C , Lightning , and/or Micro-USB cables , too.)

Many phones, such as the iPhone 12 and newer, can be recharged as fast as possible (up to roughly 50% charged in about 30 minutes) with a 20 W charger. Although you can still use a less-powerful charger with these phones, they’ll simply charge more slowly.

Battery percentage when charging an iPhone 13

several chargers we recommend.

After poring over charging catalogs from dozens of companies, all with established track records of great products and service, we whittled the list down based on the following criteria:

  • USB-C ports with 18 to 30 W output: USB-C ports allow most phones to charge faster than they can with USB-A, and many of the latest models can take advantage of even faster USB-C Power Delivery (PD) charging speeds, drawing 18 to 30 W of power. Having higher output doesn’t hurt, but there’s no reason to buy anything with more than 30 W per port specifically for your phone. Those more powerful (and more expensive) chargers are better options if you also need to charge a tablet, a handheld game console, or a laptop .
  • USB-A ports with 12 W or QuickCharge 3.0 output: USB-A charging maxes out at 12 W (5 volts, 2.4 amps) for Apple devices and many Android phones, while some of the latter can charge faster with Qualcomm’s QuickCharge 3.0 standard. For chargers with one or more USB-A ports, we prefer that each USB-A port can supply at least 12 W.
  • Power-to-dollar value: We determine the relative value of each charger by the total power it can deliver across its ports. This allows us to rule out models that are unnecessarily expensive.
  • Size: For easy packing and storage, we generally prefer smaller chargers to larger ones. A little more volume is fine if that means more power or more ports, but all other things being equal, smaller is better.
  • Multiple USB ports: If you regularly need to charge two or more devices at once, a larger charger with multiple ports is often a better value than a smaller one that charges a single device.

To find the top options in each category, we put the finalists through several tests:

  • USB-A ports: We test the maximum power draw from each port by plugging in a variable power load and an ammeter, which allows us to finely control the power flow and determine whether it matches the advertised rate. We start with the power load set to 0 amps and then turn it up until it matches the promised amperage, ensuring the voltage stays within a range of 4.75 volts to 5.25 volts. We repeat that test on each charger’s other ports, confirming that every port behaves as expected and that, combined, they match the indicated output.
  • USB-C ports: USB-C uses digital communication between devices to verify charging speeds in a way that USB-A doesn’t, so we use the Total Phase USB Power Delivery Analyzer and its Data Center Software to measure and record this data, including the advertised power profiles, the steady state output, and whether any errors occur in charging.
  • Combined power output: After testing each individual port, we test the combined output when each is pushed to the maximum. The best chargers support their fastest rates on each port at the same time, without added devices slowing anything down.

The Anker PowerPort III Nano charger

Today’s USB-C phone chargers are tiny and cheap—often between $10 and $20, sometimes even with a good cable. Anker’s PowerPort III Nano is the best, most compact option for sending the fastest possible charge to most phones, capable of delivering 20 W over USB-C.

It’s impressively compact. The PowerPort III Nano is very small. Measuring 1.75 inches long, including the non-folding prongs, and only a little more than an inch wide and tall, its dimensions are almost identical to those of the 5 W charger that Apple packed with most iPhones for the past decade. It’s less than half the size of Apple’s comparable 20 W charger.

Size comparison between Anker and Aukey 20-watt chargers and the larger Apple charger

It has only one port, but it delivers up to 20 W. The PowerPort III Nano has a single USB-C port. Our testing hardware showed that the port worked as advertised, with a proper 20 W power draw measured at 9 volts/2.2 amps. (It also supports 15 W charging, which makes it compatible with USB-C devices that don’t use the Power Delivery standard, such as some Android phones.)

As with all of the other USB-C chargers we recommend in this guide, you should see most phones charge from empty to somewhere between 50% and 55% full in half an hour or so, compared with 20% full in the same time period on a 5 W charger. In fact, during our tests the iPhone 13 battery reached about 52% capacity in that time and 83% in an hour.

It works with Apple MagSafe accessories. The Anker charger also provides full power to MagSafe wireless charging accessories, including Apple’s MagSafe Charger and MagSafe Duo Charger and the others we recommend .

It comes with a cable. This charger comes with a 6-foot version of one of our favorite cables , the Anker PowerLine II, with USB-C and Lightning connectors. (That’s great for owners of older iPhones, but if you have an iPhone 15 or Android device you’ll need to supply your own cable.) It has sturdy housings, supports up to 18 W charging speeds, and its MFi certification means it meets Apple’s standards for safety and performance.

It has a long warranty, and Anker’s customer service is trustworthy. Anker’s 18-month warranty is on a par with many of its competitors’ coverage offerings. On the rare occasions Wirecutter staffers have had to take advantage of the protection, they’ve found the process to be quick and easy.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Its stationary plug gives it a less-streamlined shape for packing compared with those with a foldable plug.
  • Although it has enough power to charge most phones at top speed, it falls short of some phones’ full capabilities (like the iPhone 14 and newer, which can draw up to 27 W).

Our pick for best usb-c charger that can fast-charge two devices at once, the Belkin Boost Charge Pro Dual 45W USB-C GaN Wall Charger.

If you’d like to fast-charge two devices at once—say, an iPhone 15 and a Kindle—the Boost Charge Pro 45W Dual USB-C Wall Charger is your best bet. It even has enough power to fast-charge one larger device, such as an iPad Pro or Chromebook.

It has two powerful USB-C ports. Both of the Belkin’s USB-C ports are capable of charging a single device faster than our top pick (we measured up to 45 W from each, though most phones max out at 30 W charging speeds). And when charging two devices, we measured up to 25 W from the upper port and 20 W from the lower port, which is still enough power to fast-charge most phones.

It has an easily packable size and shape. Unlike our top pick, the Belkin has a folding plug, and it weighs just a couple of ounces more. Despite being a bit larger (it measures 1.8 by 1.6 by 1.5 inches), its curved edges make it easy to slip into a pocket or purse.

It has a long warranty and good customer support. Belkin backs this charger with a two-year warranty, which is even longer than that of our top pick, and we’ve found their customer support to be responsive and reliable.

It’s on the pricier side but offers good value. This is one of the most expensive models we tested, despite not including a charging cable, but it packs a lot of power into a small package. Plus, if you need a cable for an iPhone 15 or Android phone, it’s available in a bundle with a 6.6-foot USB-C cable for $10 more, as of this writing (you’d likely pay as much or more for any of our favorite USB-C cables ).

The RavPower charger.

The RAVPower PD 30W 2-Port USB C Fast Charger (RP-PC144) is the best dual-port charger for charging your phone at the maximum speed, no matter what kind of charging port it uses.

It delivers high speed from both ports, even at the same time. Its USB-C port can charge a single device at up to 30 W, and its USB-A port can do so at up to 18 W, allowing you to charge your phone two to three times faster than with the standard chargers included with most phones. When both ports are in use, it has a total max output of 30 W, supplying up to 18 W from the USB-C port and up to 12 W from the USB-A port.

It’s a great option if your devices aren’t all USB-C yet. Although a USB-C port is smaller and faster than USB-A, and works with more kinds of devices, the USB-C standard is not yet ubiquitous. This charger combines the benefits of USB-C with the convenience of USB-A, which means you can charge most phones as fast as possible, while also powering a second device on the USB-A port at a respectable rate.

It’s nearly as fast as our top pick. In our tests, the RP-PC144 performed exactly as promised. You can expect an iPhone 13 to charge to about 36% in a half hour on the USB-A port and closer to 50% on the USB-C port.

Despite offering two ports, it’s still quite small. This power brick is larger than what comes with most phones, but it isn’t huge. It measures about 1.9 inches long by 1.9 inches wide by 1.2 inches thick—noticeably smaller than the Apple 30W USB-C Power Adapter —and weighs less than 3 ounces. Plus, a folding plug makes it convenient for travel.

The RAVPower RP-PC144 USB-C charger (in black) next to the white Apple 30W USB-C charger, which is larger and has one fewer port.

Its warranty is even longer than that of our top pick. RAVPower backs this model with a 30-month warranty, which gives you more time than the rest of our picks to ensure that it’s working properly.

It comes with a (short) cable. Included with the charger is a 3-foot cable that can connect a USB-C port to a Lightning-powered device, such as an iPhone 14 or older. (Owners of the iPhone 15 or Android devices will need to bring their own C-to-C cable.) It is sturdily built and packs up small for travel, though we’d generally prefer a longer cable for everyday use.

Our pick for best USB phone charger with four USB-A ports, the Anker PowerPort 4.

The Anker PowerPort 4 offers four USB-A ports in a compact design, making it ideal for a couple who’s traveling (or one person who uses a ton of gear). It lets you charge as many as four devices at once—say, two iPhones and two Apple Watches—albeit at a slower pace than our other picks.

It’s one of the fastest multiport chargers we’ve tested. Despite its advertised 40 W maximum output, we measured 12 W draw from all four ports at the same time, for about 48 W total. Unless your device has Quick Charge capabilities, that’s as fast as it can charge via USB-A, and many multiport chargers like this can’t provide that much power to every port at the same time. Based on our experience with the PowerPort 4, we can say that even if the speeds do drop a bit in practical use, you can still be sure of fast USB-A charging across all the ports.

It’s bulkier than one- or two-port chargers, but still not huge. At just over an inch thick, the PowerPort 4 has the same thickness as our top pick, and its largest sides measure 2.6 by 2.6 inches—small enough to plug into a standard wall outlet without blocking the second socket.

While many multiport chargers have a long cord between the charger’s body and the wall outlet, the Anker PowerPort 4 plugs directly into the outlet, so it’s less bulky to carry. And like most of our picks, it has a convenient fold-up plug.

It’s relatively affordable. Although it doesn’t come with a cable, it’s one of the most inexpensive multiport chargers we’ve tested.

It has the same warranty as our top pick. The PowerPort 4 comes with an 18-month warranty and is backed by Anker’s reliably solid customer service.

If you don’t need a cable, and you’d prefer a more powerful charger with a folding plug and lots of color options: The Anker 511 Nano III 30W Charger (A2147) is a solid alternative to our top pick .

If you want two chargers, and don’t need a cable: Get the RAVPower PD Pioneer 20W Wall Charger (RP-PC150) . It only comes in a two-pack, but if you need multiple chargers anyway this one has similar specs to our top pick and is a better deal than buying two of that model (or any of our other picks).

If you don’t need a cable, and you’d prefer a more powerful charger with a slimmer shape and a folding plug: Get the Belkin WCH008dqWH . You get slightly less power for the size and price compared with our top pick, but it has a flatter profile that doesn’t jut out as far from the wall.

If you want a charger with USB-C and USB-A charging, and don’t need a cable: Get the RAVPower 30W Dual Port Compact PD Charger (RP-PC132) . It’s visually identical to our also-great pick, the RP-PC144 , and performed similarly in our testing, but unlike that model it doesn’t come with a charging cable.

Scosche launched the PowerVolt PD30 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2024, and we plan to test it against our current picks when it becomes available this fall. It has a single USB-C port with a 30 W rated max output, a compact shape, and a fold-up plug.

This is not a comprehensive list of all the USB phone chargers we’ve tested. We have removed any models that have been discontinued or no longer meet our requirements.

  • Apple 20W USB-C Power Adapter
  • Invzi 20W USB-C PD Charger YM20A

Multiport chargers

  • Anker 324 40W Charger (A2628)
  • RAVPower PD Pioneer 40W 2-Port Wall Charger (RP-PC152)
  • Spigen PowerArc 40W ArcStation Pro

Like our upgrade pick, the Anker 521 Nano Pro 40W Charger (A2038) has two fast-charging USB-C ports. However, it is heavier, has a lower total output, and lacks a folding plug.

The Aukey Focus Duo 30W PD Charger (PA-D1) has a fast-charging USB-C port, a USB-A port, and a folding plug, but it weighs more than otherwise comparable models.

The Nimble Wally Mini Wall Charger has a fast-charging USB-C port, a USB-A port, and a folding plug, but it is heavier and has a lower total output than otherwise comparable models.

The RAVPower 60W 6-Port Desktop USB Charging Station with iSmart (RP-PC028) and RAVPower 60W 6-Port Desktop Charger with QC 3.0 (RP-PC029) have more USB-A ports than other models we tested, but they’re too large for travel and lack USB-C ports.

Which charger is best for me?

When choosing chargers for your home and office, consider the power requirements that your devices need. Add the power requirements together for your peripherals to determine how many devices you need to charge concurrently.

Will you need more maximum power than the charger will support in total? If so, consider getting a more powerful charger.

Which is better: power chargers or combined hub chargers?

This comes down to personal choice. Some people want a one-size-fits-all charger that plugs into the wall and will cope with all of your devices and are prepared to pay extra for this combo. Others prefer the simplicity of a smaller charger that will fit in your pocket and go anywhere with you.

Remember, if you have access to mains power, these wall chargers are for you. If you need a power charger that will work anywhere, you need to consider a portable battery pack instead.

How did we choose these chargers?

We chose these chargers based on three factors: functionality, power output, and price.

Some of these power chargers are low cost and have fewer ports and power output than higher-cost models. However, for the price, if you only have two or three devices to power, they will fit your needs well.

Some of the chargers are ultra-compact and light with foldaway power prongs that make the chargers easy to slip in your bag when travelling; others are high-end chargers/desktop hubs that perform multiple functions that other chargers will not do.

With travel on the horizon once more, it’s time to start thinking about investing in the accessories no jet-setter should be without, and adapters deserve to be at the very top of that list.

If you’re still relying on the one you picked up at Dubai airport 20 years ago, then it’s time to upgrade – ideally to one with at least one USB port and the ability to help you stay connected in a minimum of 150 countries.

Features to look out for include mechanisms that allow the prongs to slide smoothly into place and slot quickly back in when not in use, and a small LED light that will show you when the power’s on.

One thing you don’t have to worry too much about though is surge protection – these days, the majority of adapters have this built in.

We’ve included a number of travel adapters designed especially for smaller items of tech such as iPhones and iPads , simply because these days many leisure travellers are more likely to carry numerous smaller gadgets, rather than larger items such as laptops .

  • 10 best travel backpacks to prepare for that long-awaited trip
  • 11 best noise-cancelling headphones to help you focus
  • 11 best packing cubes for keeping your suitcase organised

We tested our adapters by using them with a wide range of gadgets, paying careful attention to the way in which interchangeable adapters could be swapped and how securely the prongs stayed in place

We quickly realised the benefit to a number of extras we hadn’t considered before, whether it was dedicated pouches with clearly marked compartments or extra-clear markings indicating which country a certain adapter was most likely to be required in.

You can trust our independent reviews. We may earn commission from some of the retailers, but we never allow this to influence selections, which are formed from real-world testing and expert advice. This revenue helps us to fund journalism across The Independent .

OneAdaptr all-in-one world adapter with USB-C & 3 USB charger

OneWorld PD - All-In-One world adapter with USB-C _ 3 USB charger

You can plug five devices into this all-singing, all-dancing adapter which has three USB ports, a USB C port and the ability to do its thing in 150 countries.  It has brilliant packaging – in this case a book-like box with a magnetic closure that looks and feels far too good to simply be tossed in the bin. For extra points in the packaging department, this adapter also comes with its own colour-coordinated drawstring pouch.

Our favourite feature was the way in which the prongs slid out – unlike other adapters, which required a separate button to be pressed, we simply needed to press and hold the same button that we used to slide out the prongs.

Mophie charge stream global travel kit

Mophie Charge Stream Global Travel Kit

This adapter, designed with smart phones in mind, is another product with brilliant packaging – in this case, a sturdy pouch with clearly identifiable sections for the various components, which include a wireless charging station, five interchangeable adapters, a micro-USB cable and a car adapter.

Sadly we didn’t have a phone with wireless charging capability on which to test the wireless charger, but we were still able to charge our phone the traditional way, using the USB port. We loved the ultra-bright LED light that appeared when this adapter was in use, as well as the way in which the different components slotted firmly but quickly into place.

Anker 65W 3-port charger

Anker 65W 3-Port Charger

This is another wonderfully compact adapter designed with phones and USB C-charging laptops in mind, although the tiny size of the different attachments might be a downside for those prone to clumsiness. However, we loved the ease with which they slotted into the body of the main unit, which provides plenty of power.

Two USB-A ports and one USB-C port (the type most Samsung users will be familiar with) offer a total of 65W of output, which can be used to power three devices simultaneously. We loved the sky-blue trim, and the bright blue light offered a welcome alternative to the standard red.

Samsonite worldwide adapter

Samsonite Worldwide Adapter

This is a sturdy, reliable adapter that will keep you connected in 150 countries. The various prongs slide out with satisfying ease, and a two-year warranty will appeal to those prone to slinging their adapters in cramped corners of backpacks and suitcases.

Perhaps we’re nit-picking, but we would have loved to see a flash of colour, and we can’t help but feel £35 is a little steep when it’s easy to find adapters with USB ports (which this one doesn’t have) for much less.

Twelve South plugbug duo

Twelve South PlugBug Duo

A lot of thought has gone into the design of the Ferrari-red plugbug duo, as well as its packaging. The PlugBug comes tucked into a sturdy cardboard box with cut-out holes for the various components. Designed for use with Apple gadgets such as iPhones, MacBooks and iPads, it has five interchangeable adapters that allow it to be used in 150 countries. MacBooks or iPads can be plugged into the base and there are two USB ports on the side.

Heys universal adapter

Heys Universal Adapter

This is a compact, top-quality adapter with the ability to charge a wide range of gadgets, and a great price tag – just £24. It’s far from basic, with two USBs, a sleek red trim and a locking action that means the prongs stay put when extended but will easily slide back in when they’re no longer needed.

One aspect that proved unexpectedly useful was the red outline around the holes for the prongs of three-pinned UK plugs – when fumbling around in semi-darkness, this acted as a handy visual guide.

Go Travel worldwide adapter and USB

Go Worldwide adapter

Go Travel’s adapter errs on the chunky side (it’s surprisingly heavy) but it’s got a thoughtful, top-quality design, with two USB ports and a sturdy locking mechanism that will keep the various prongs in place. A gold star was awarded for the clearly marked wording next to the controls for each set of prongs – it’s all too easy to forget which countries have which sockets.

There are two USB ports and we appreciated the positioning of the LED light that appears when it’s plugged in – the light is on the bottom, so you’ll be able to quickly tell whether it’s turned on if you know where to look but its position means it’s unlikely to keep you awake if you’re easily disturbed.

Herschel travel adapter

Herschel travel adapter

A stylish adapter contained in a zip lock-style (but inevitably landfill-destined) plastic bag, Herschel’s contribution to connectivity will appeal to style-conscious jetsetters. It’s got a sleek pared-back look and the casing has a rubberised feel which offers a welcome alternative to cold, hard plastic.

There are two USB ports on the side and the design is slightly different to most adapters, with the prongs positioned in a way which means you’ll need to rotate the adapter depending on which set you’re using. Our one gripe was that the sliding controls erred on the stiff side and more than once we had to prise out the prongs manually.

Flight 001 5-in-1 universal travel adapter

Flight 001 5 in 1 Universal Travel Adapter

Why can’t all adapters look like this? A colourful, Lego-like stack of interchangeable adapters that slot easily in and out, the flight 001 5-in-1 universal travel adapter has two USBs and comes in a neat, sturdy box that doubles as the perfect carrying case.

Although this is an adapter made up of multiple parts, rather than internal, fixed prongs that simply slide in and out, the ease with which the pieces slot together – and the clever use of colour – means the likelihood of any part being left behind is slim to none.

The verdict: Travel adapters

The brilliant and stylish OneAdaptr all-in-on world adapter is proof that an adapter really can serve multiple purposes without making any sacrifices in the quality department.

However, the Mophie charge stream global travel kit is one of the best travel adapters designed with smart phones in mind and the Anker 65W 3-port charger is a stylish, compact adapter that is ideal for families.

The best USB-C laptop PD chargers for 2024

Simon Jary

If you’re wondering why your laptop will happily charge from some USB plugs but not others, the answer is found in the confusing world of USB Power Delivery (USB PD). Fear not, we’ve rounded up some great examples of USB laptop chargers that will actually work, and which you can buy right now.

It’s not quite as simple as searching for a charger with Power Delivery support, however. While some smaller laptops will charge from a 30W adaptor, others require significantly more power. The USB PD specification maxes out at 240W, but accessory speeds can vary, and we’ve found charging accessories that operate as low as 18W and as high as 200W. To find a compatible device you really need to know what is required by your particular model of laptop.

Later in this article we discuss how much power your laptop requires—but as a standard guide, 30-45W will be sufficient for a small laptop, 65W for mid-sized and 90W for most larger laptops. Top-end laptops can support 140W of power, so look for the right wattage when choosing a laptop charger.

If you’re looking to fast-charge a smartphone that promises charging of, say, 65W, do note that many third-party USB PD chargers will not support protocols such as PPS (Programmable Power Supply) or SCP (Super Charge Protocol) that is required by proprietary phone fast-charging standards. You can expect 18W charging from such devices, regardless of the theoretical output of the USB-C port.

USB-C is technically clever enough that you don’t have to worry about the charger having too many Watts of power. USB PD means you can charge even a 15W phone with a 140W charger.

Look out for chargers with multiple ports if you want the chance to charge more than one device at a time.

While there are undoubtedly cheaper chargers out there, picking a trusted or premium brand may reduce the safety risks associated with overheating. Some of our favorites include Anker, Ugreen, Satechi, Hyper and Syncwire.

Best USB-C PD Laptop Charger Reviews

1. ugreen nexode pro 65w usb-c charger – best overall usb-c wall charger.

Ugreen Nexode Pro 65W USB-C Charger - Best overall USB-C wall charger

  • Excellent value
  • Compact design
  • Three PD outputs
  • Supports PPS, Super Fast Charging 2.0
  • Some large laptops require 100W

With 65W potential, this ultra-compact USB-C wall charger can power most mid-sized laptops, although larger notebooks may require a more powerful 100W charger.

It has three USB-C PD ports, and when using all three it can power at 45W from the top USB-C port and and 15W from each of the lower USB-C and USB-A ports. Using the top two USB-C ports, it can handle 45W and 20W so could fast-charge your phone while keeping a mid-sized laptop ticking.

It supports Power Delivery 3.0, PPS, Samsung Super Fast Charging 2.0 and Quick Charge 3.0 so is speed-ready for most devices.

It’s also competitively priced for a 65W charger, supports international voltages and, because it uses GaN tech, it’s a diddy little thing for such a powerful device.

Unless you need additional USB ports or 100W, we really can’t see how you’d be better served by another Power Delivery charger—although the Acefast GaN Smart PD Charger Hub, reviewed later, includes an integrated mini USB and HDMI hub.

2. UGreen Nexode 100W USB-C Charger – Best 100W USB-C charger

UGreen Nexode 100W USB-C Charger - Best 100W USB-C charger

  • Two 100W USB-C PD outputs
  • Versatile with four outputs
  • Supports PPS, Quick Charge 4
  • UK model quite deep

This UGreen device is a powerful 100W laptop charger.

The UK model, which has a different design to those available in the US and EU—necessarily so, because the elongated design and sheer weight (268g for the UK model) of this thing would likely have trouble staying attached to the wall without that third prong to steady itself. The 8.29oz (235g) US model has a taller, more rectangular design, with folding plugs to make them more compact for travel, but the core specs are otherwise the same.

We like the design, and it feels much better made than some cheap plasticky chargers. There are no angular edges here, with every line smoothed out and rounded to soften its appearance. The outer casing is a matte gun-metal grey, and all the necessary tech specs are hidden out of sight where the adaptor plugs into the wall. It’s not overly bulky, despite its weight, thanks to the GaN tech inside.

But it’s really not about what it looks like; it’s about what it does—and this UGreen GAN X 100W adaptor has some serious power behind it.

There are four USB ports in all—three USB-C and one full-size USB-A—two of which support a 100W output, with the other two rated at 22.5W. There’s a maximum power output of 100W, which means when you use more than one port the power rating will be reduced, but it’s still possible to get up to 65W on either of those two 100W USB-Cs.

Note that you’ll need to make sure your USB-C charging cable is capable of carrying up to 100W for those power powerful ports.

This Ugreen adaptor supports multiple charging protocols, including Power Delivery 2.0 and 3.0, Quick Charge 4+ and PPS, and it will work with pretty much any device that charges over USB.

Ugreen has a newer, more energy-efficient version, the Nexode Pro 100W 3-Port GaN Fast Charger , that’s also smaller but has three instead of four USB ports. If three USB are enough for you, we’d recommend the Nexode Pro, but we still rate the older four-port Nexode reviewed here.

3. Anker Nano II 65W GaN II PPS Fast Charger – Best small 65W USB-C charger

Anker Nano II 65W GaN II PPS Fast Charger - Best small 65W USB-C charger

  • Reliable brand
  • Super-compact
  • Supports PPS, PowerIQ
  • Only one port

Anker is perhaps one of the best-known names in charging tech, and this single-port PD charger is attractive to us for several reasons.

Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology has made chargers a fraction of the size of silicon-based models only a couple of years old, and once considered small themselves.

Anker’s new Nano II chargers utilise next-generation GaN II tech that transmits energy more efficiently and operates at twice the frequency of the first generation of GaN—making these chargers even smaller.

We haven’t seen PD chargers this small before. They are tiny—about the size of Apple’s weedy 5W iPhone charger but over 10x more powerful. The 65W Nano II charger weighs just 132g and comes in at 41.7-x-36-x-44mm. The US version features neat foldable pins.

Moreover, they support not only Power Delivery, Quick Charge and Anker’s own PowerIQ smart charging, but also PPS. This means it stands out among other third-party adaptors in its ability to fast-charge smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S20 that require the Super Fast Charging protocol for their proprietary charging standards.

On the downside, there is only one output, which means you can charge only one device at a time and it’ll need to support USB-C.

There are also smaller, cheaper 30W and 45W options are available in the US and UK Anker stores.

4. Ugreen Nexode 30W USB-C Charger – Cheapest 30W USB-C wall charger

Ugreen Nexode 30W USB-C Charger - Cheapest 30W USB-C wall charger

  • Unbeatable value
  • Foldable prongs
  • 30W not enough for all laptops

This compact 30W Power Delivery charger from Ugreen keeps things simple with a single USB-C output for charging your phone, tablet or—potentially—laptop.

It’s worth pointing out that 30W is not enough to charge all laptops, so do check your spec to see if it’s appropriate before you buy. It should be plenty for a 13-inch MacBook Air, but not some of the larger, more powerful laptops.

If it’s powerful enough for your needs, this is a really appealing device—significantly more affordable than other devices in our round-up, and thanks to GaN tech it has a sleek, compact design that is easily portable.

Both the U.S. and U.K. models feature folding plug prongs.

5. UGreen Nexode Pro 160W Charger – Best PD 3.1 USB-C wall charger

UGreen Nexode Pro 160W Charger - Best PD 3.1 USB-C wall charger

  • 140W PD 3.1
  • Apple Fast Charging for 16in Pro
  • Smaller than Apple 140W charger
  • Three ports

Some modern large laptops support chargers rated at higher than 100W, which was the maximum for PD 3.0. Later PD 3.1 can support up to 240W but at the moment 140W is the sweet spot.

Apple’s 16-inch MacBook Pro is one such laptop, and can fast-charge using Apple’s own 140W charger. Sadly, Apple blocks third-party chargers from fast-charging using even certified PD 3.1 cables, favoring its own USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable but the charger itself works just fine using Apple’s proprietary cable.

Third-party chargers such as Ugreen’s Nexode 140W charger are better than what you get with the laptop as they boast multiple ports and are often also smaller. This one has three USB-C ports (one at 140W, one at 100W, and the last at 30W) and a USB-A at 22.5W for smaller devices. The maximum output is 160W, so using more ports will spread that power between devices, but it could still simultaneously fast-charge a PD 3.1 laptop and a phone.

Even if your laptop needs 100W or less, the extra maximum output is useful when connecting multiple devices.

6. OneAdaptr OneWorld 65 – Best compact travel USB-C PD 65W charger and adapter

OneAdaptr OneWorld 65 - Best compact travel USB-C PD 65W charger and adapter

  • Supports six devices
  • Supports PPS and Quick Charge
  • Works as a travel charger
  • Three of the ports share 15W

The OneWorld 65 looks like any international adapter but boasts a built-in 65W PD Charger and can charge up to six devices simultaneously.

Built with the latest Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology that packs in all the required electronics in a tiny package without overheating, it’s only a little bigger than a standard pin-sliding travel adapter.

It features one side-mounted 65W USB-C PD port, one 20W USB-C PD port, another USB-C charging port and two USB-A charging ports. Quick Charge and PPS are supported for phone fast charging.

Maximum power output is 65W so if you are charging a mid-sized laptop in full use, there won’t be much spare juice for the other devices. However, if the laptop is just having a battery top-up, there should be enough power to be spread about.

What’s handy is that in addition to all these USB ports you can also use this as a travel adapter. Sliding connectors will fit into US, European, Australian/Chinese and British wall sockets so covering over 200 countries, and you can plug a similar range of plugs into the OneWorld 65 from the other side.

Now, as with all travel adapters, you just have to remember to pack it on your next trip rather than realise you’ve left it at home as soon as you get to the airport or hotel.

OneAdaptr also sells higher and lower versions of the OneWorld at 30W ($49) , 100W ($109) and 135W ($129) total output.

International pricing at the OneAdaptr store is calculated on current US $ rate at time of purchase so prices may vary to our stated cost at the time of writing.

7. Alogic Rapid Power 67W Multi-Country GaN Charger

Alogic Rapid Power 67W Multi-Country GaN Charger

  • Interchangeable plugs for international travel
  • Three USB outputs
  • Travel case

Alogic’s Rapid Power 67W Multi-Country GaN Charger is interesting for two key reasons: first, it has three outputs (one 67W USB-C PD, plus another USB-C and a USB-A port that can share 15W between them; maximum charging of all three is 67W), which makes it versatile; and, second, supplied in the box are interchangeable plugs for the UK, Europe, and AU that fit over the built-in US plug, making it an excellent travel charger.

Using all three ports at the same time, reduces the main USB-C port to 47W and the other two ports to share the 15W.

This is another GaN charger, which means it is delightfully small (5cm long and weighing just 110g) for a device that is potentially going to be consuming suitcase room. Even better, it comes in a rather lovely fabric hard-shell travel case with a moulded-foam interior that fits all the plugs and the included braided USB-C cable, with a little extra space available for more cables or other tech gear.

8. Acefast Portable GaN 65W Fast Charger – Best USB-C charger with HDMI

Acefast Portable GaN 65W Fast Charger - Best USB-C charger with HDMI

  • 60Hz 4K HDMI port
  • US & EU only

This USB-C charger has something special hidden up its sleeve: it’s also a mini USB hub with USB-C (60W to device), 10Gbps / 5W USB-A and a 60Hz 4K HDMI port. The inclusion of the fast 10Gbps USB-C makes the 4K at 60Hz possible, compared to more basic 5Gbps versions.

If you just want to charge your laptop, Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck and connect to an external display—be it monitor or TV—then this charger may be all you need. In this way, it beats the other charge-only devices reviewed here.

It’s available in both black and white, but sadly there’s no Type G plug (UK) version available yet.

9. UGreen Nexode 200W USB-C Desktop Charger – Best desktop USB-C power charger

UGreen Nexode 200W USB-C Desktop Charger - Best desktop USB-C power charger

  • 200W charger
  • Supports PPS
  • Comes with braided cable

This is a slightly different breed of charger than those we’ve discussed so far in this group test, and is what we call a desktop charger. Rather than hugging the power socket, it has a 2m extension cable that lets you plug it into the wall but bring the USB outputs themselves up to a more accessible area on the desk.

The Ugreen Nexode 200W USB-C charger allows you to charge six devices at the same time, and so avoid having to plug in multiple chargers for the task and free up space on your desktop. While it’s too heavy to be truly portable, it is a super-compact size for so many ports.

Boasting four USB-C ports and two USB-A, it can supply up to 200W of power (maximum 100W per port as it’s PD 3.0), and therefore could charge three mid-sized laptops, a couple of phones, and your headphones simultaneously.

The charging options are too numerous to list here, but with six devces charging at the same time, you could have one at 65W, two at 45W, one at 20W, and the two USB-A ports sharing 20W.

It is compatible with both iPhone and Samsung Fast Charging.

10. Satechi 200W USB-C 6-port PD GaN Charger

Satechi 200W USB-C 6-port PD GaN Charger

  • 140W PD 3.1 ports
  • Comes with stand
  • No USB-C cable included
  • US only at time of writing

Like the Ugreen Nexode 200W USB-C charger, this desktop charger boasts six PD ports. Unlike that one, all the ports on the Satechi are USB-C.

The top two ports are USB-C PD 3.1, so can power at up to 140W. The other four ports support USB-C PD 3.0, with a maximum 100W.

When all six ports are used at the same time, the port hierarchy is 65W/45W/20W/20W/20W/20W.

The charger supports PD 3.1/3.0, QC 4.0+, and PPS.

It can rest on its flat base or sit in the included stand if you prefer a vertical orientation.

11. Ugreen Nexode 300W GaN Desktop Charger – Most powerful desktop USB-C charger

Ugreen Nexode 300W GaN Desktop Charger - Most powerful desktop USB-C charger

  • Massive 300W charger
  • 140W PD 3.1 port

This is a monster desktop charger that can pump out 300W via a mix of USB-C and USB-A ports, but it’s surprisingly compact—about the same size as the Satechi 200W desktop charger—with no need for an external power supply.

While the Satechi desktop charger reviewed above has two 140W ports it is still limited to 200W total output. This charger can supply 140W of power to a large laptop, plus 100W to another and still have enough power for a mid-sized laptop or a bunch of tablets and phones.

If you choose to use all the ports, the power is distributed as follows: 140/65/45/20/22.5W.

12. Nekteck 107W USB-C Charger – Best value desktop USB-C charger

Nekteck 107W USB-C Charger - Best value desktop USB-C charger

  • 4 USB outputs
  • Ideal for desktop use
  • 100W USB-C cable in box
  • No Quick Charge/PPS support
  • Messy rear design

This desktop charger from Nektek has a shorter (1m) extension cable than the Ugreen Nexode desktop charger, and it has some limitations but it does offer great value for money.

It has four USB outputs in all, making it an ideal device if you have multiple devices to charge. However, not if you have multiple laptops to charge…

There are one 65W USB-C Port, one 30W USB-C port and two 12W USB A ports for simultaneous charging of laptop, tablet, phones and other devices. Four of these five ports are full-size USB-As, rated at 12W. The device’s maximum output with all ports in use is 107W, which means you can’t run them all at full power at once.

Yet we are drawn to the versatility of this desktop charger, with its 65W output enough for most mid-sized laptops. We’re impressed to find a 100W USB-C cable is provided in the box, as this will be required to fully utilise that output.

Sadly, this particular model is not currently available in the UK, where we would recommend the Satechi 10 8 W Dual USB-C PD Charger (see below) or more powerful Satechi 108W Pro USB-C PD Desktop Charger.

13. Satechi 75W Dual USB-C PD – Best USB-C and USB-A desktop charger

Satechi 75W Dual USB-C PD - Best USB-C and USB-A desktop charger

  • Multiple USB outputs
  • Nicely designed
  • Second PD port is low-power
  • No PPS support

This Satechi’s desktop charger has two USB-C Power Delivery ports and two USB-A ports—especially useful if you’re travelling with more than one power-hungry USB-C device or a mix of USB-C and USB-A.

However, do note that one of the USB-C ports will charge at the full 90W and the other at a more sedate 18W (more than fine for a phone, but unlikely to be enough to power a laptop).

The two USB-A ports are handy as most of us still have devices that require a charging cable connection into this old standard. Each can handle 12W charging but that capacity is shared between the two ports so will be lower if both are in use. This is fine if you are charging one phone or two lower-powered devices such as headphones or watch.

At 14.7oz (417g) it isn’t super-lightweight but is a desktop charger so will probably not be travelling with you.

A more mighty model, the Satechi 165W USB-C 4-Port PD GaN Charger , is a real power beast. For $119 / £107 , it has two 100W-capable USB-C ports and two that can reach 60W—although max output is 165W, it’s the highest of any of the chargers we have tested here. You can charge a large laptop and a mid-sized laptop at the same time. Interestingly, being GaN, it’s actually lighter (12oz or 340g) than the 108W version, although it is priced higher.

14. Acefast Desktop Power Station Z4 PD218W GaN – USB-C and USB-A charging options displayed

Acefast Desktop Power Station Z4 PD218W GaN - USB-C and USB-A charging options displayed

  • Manual output change and display

Most desktop and wall chargers have different power output options for the various ports on offer but only the interesting Acefast Z4 lets you manually change them with the press of a button and then shows you which ports are set for which wattage.

Maximum output is a decent 218W that you can share around devices to your fancy and witness the distribution of power on the LCD display.

There are four options for the four USB ports (three USB-C and one USB-A).

Mode A: 100W + 65W + 30W + 18W = 213W max. Mode B: 65W + 65W + 65W + 18W = 213W max. Mode C: 100W + 100W + 18W = 218W max. Mode D (using three ports): 100W + 100W + 18W = 218W max.

The desktop charger—not yet available in the U.K. but available with U.S. and E.U. plugs immediately—is priced very reasonably, and supports most fast-charging standards.

What is Power Delivery?

USB-C and USB PD are often confused, but the important thing to remember is that USB-C is a reversible connection type, while USB PD is a power delivery specification, overseen by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) and often expressed simply as ‘PD’. With version 3.1 of the specification, Power Delivery is able to carry up to 240W of power plus data over USB-C (previously limited to 100W on PD 3.0), but devices that support Power Delivery can range from 18W right up to 240W.

How much power do I need to charge my laptop?

The easiest way to find out how much power is required to charge your laptop is to inspect the charger that was sold with it, if you have that to hand. Alternatively you can look for its specification on the manufacturer’s website.

You’re looking for a figure in watts, although it may be expressed in volts and amps. If so, simply multiply these two numbers to get the figure you need. For example, a device that requires 12V/2A to charge will need a 24W USB-C PD charger (12 x 2 = 24).

Once you know what power rating you’re looking for, finding a USB-C PD charger for your laptop or console is easy. Sometimes it can pay to get one a little faster than you need—it may be more expensive, but you’ll be pleased you bought it if you later decide to upgrade your laptop.

Can I use a more powerful third-party charger than the one supplied with my laptop?

Yes. There is no need to worry about plugging devices into chargers that are capable of delivering more power than the device is able to accept, since USB devices will draw only the power they need. However, the cable you use to join the two is crucial, and using a low-quality or under-specified cable with the charger could lead to problems with your device. Read more about the differences in USB-C cables before you buy .

Why won’t my laptop charge from a third-party charger?

Although USB PD can go as high as 240W, actual speeds supported by chargers can vary—it’s possible that your third-party adaptor is not powerful enough to charge your laptop.

The adaptor itself is only one piece of the puzzle, and the cable with which it is combined must also be capable of delivering the required amount of power. Read more about the differences in USB-C cables before you buy .

What is the advantage of a GaN charger?

GaN is short for gallium nitride. It requires fewer components than traditional silicone chargers, which means devices that use the technology can be less bulky and more efficient.
