Day 1 St Petersburg

Welcome to St Petersburg! You will be met by a representative directly upon landing, and transferred to your 5* hotel in the city center. Relax after the flight or take a walk nearby to explore the cosy streets on your own.

Day 2 St Petersburg

After check-out from the hotel, we enjoy a city center tour by bus, including Peter and Paul Fortress, the burial place of the Romanov monarchs, Nevsky Prospect, with its endless fine shops, cafes, and museums, St.Isaak’s Cathedral, and Smolny Cathedral.

Lunch is followed by a tour of the richest art collection of the Hermitage Museum, before boarding your 5-star floating hotel, the Mustai Karim. After a brief check-in, you’ll meet the ship’s crew at a delightful cocktail reception – a relaxing way to begin your adventure after a day’s travel.

Day 3 St Petersburg

A truly unique experience awaits as you pass under the drawn bridges and navigate the canals of St. Petersburg – a privilege exclusive to the guests on this cruise. 

After lunch, we travel to the magnificent Peterhof Palace, where the ‘Russian Versailles’ sparkles with golden fountains.

Day 4 Valaam

Today we depart early for the Valaam Archipelago, a group of 50 islands in the north of Lake Lagoda, the largest lake in Europe. We’ll spend the rest of the day exploring inside the walls of the Central Monastery Complex, dominated by the majestic Cathedral of the Transfiguration. Get acquainted with one of the most scared Orthodox sites in Russia and the site of numerous clashes between the Russians and Swedes in their struggle for power during the 16th century.

Day 5 Mandrogi

Experience a taste of Russia’s traditional heritage in Mandrogi: a unique village built upon a history of craftsmanship. Visit a traditional Russian village with typical wooden houses, numerous crafts exhibitions. Learn about wood painting, intricate beadwork and weaving, blacksmithing, pottery and more. Then, you’ll be treated to a traditional midday Russian picnic (BBQ) – and even have the option to take a trip to a real Russian bathhouse (banya).

Day 6 Kizhi

Prepare to be amazed at the unique beauty of Kizhi Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site, home to the ornate Church of the Transfiguration, with 22 domes built entirely from wood with no single nail. Enjoy a concert “Music of Northern Village” in a beautiful setting.

Day 7 Goritsy

A tiny Russian community with a unique medieval atmosphere, Goritsy reveals a storied past within the famous Ferapontov Monastery. Marvel at paintings over 500 years old, and delve into the lives of the royals who lived there.

Day 8 Uglich

Today you’ll arrive in Uglich, an ancient town filled with brightly coloured architecture. Its Kremlin and the Church of St. Dmitry are particularly famous – the church’s fascinating history is tied to the life and death of Ivan the Terrible’s son. In the afternoon, relax as the sounds of Kovcheg Choir wash over you, then spend a special moment of time in a local family home.

Day 9 Moscow

Today we reach our final destination - Moscow, the glorious capital of Russia. After you disembark from Mustai Kariml, you will be transferred to your centrally located 5* hotel.

Enjoy free time for self-discovery before dinner with your fellow travellers in one of the most popular restaurants.

Day 10 Moscow

Discover Moscow’s sights through the eyes of a local: the Kremlin with its iconic red-built walls; Red Square, home to the dazzling domes of St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Zaryadye Park with its impossible floating bridge.

VESSEL REVIEW | Mustai Karim – Sea and river-capable newbuild to serve Moscow cruise market

The Krasnoye Sormovo shipyard of Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) has handed over a new cruise ship to local operator Vodohod. Designed by naval architects Marine Engineering Bureau (MEB), the newbuild has been named Mustai Karim after a famed twentieth century Russian poet.

MEB has claimed Mustai Karim is the first river-sea cruise passenger vessel to be built in Russia in over 60 years. It belongs to the Project PV300 series, which was designed to be capable of operations in both inland waters and the open sea. Also, the vessel is intended to function as a “floating four- or five-star hotel” in accordance with the operator’s wishes.

“This is the first and the biggest passenger vessel whose dimensions satisfy the maximum limits of the Volga-Don shipping channel,” MEB told Baird Maritime . “It is also the only river cruise ship that is permitted to pass underneath the raised Neva River bridges in Saint Petersburg with passengers on board, thanks in part to a propulsion arrangement that includes two 360-degree rotating, fixed-pitch propellers, a 530kW bow thruster, and an efficient hull form. This arrangement also allows the vessel to moor in Saint Petersburg’s historical city centre, which is a favourite destination among tourists.”

The newbuild has an LOA of 141 metres, a beam of 16.8 metres, and a maximum draught of three metres. With the ability to sail in wave heights of up to three metres as well as in areas with thin surface ice, the vessel can easily navigate under a broad range of sailing conditions typical in waterways that include the Volga and Don Rivers and even the more open waters of the Black Sea, the Caspian Sea, and the Sea of Azov.

Two heavy fuel oil-powered engines that each produce 1,200 kW drive the two Schottel fixed-pitch rudder propellers (FPRPs) to deliver a speed of 12 knots and an endurance of 15 days. MEB added that increased manoeuvrability can be achieved when making wide-angle turns using the FPRPs. This makes it easier to operate the ship in narrow inland waterways wherein manoeuvring at speed would be impractical due to the reduced effectiveness of the rudders.

As it is intended to operate as a cruise ship for both river and open sea sailings, Mustai Karim presented some challenges to its designers.

“It became clear to us that the river-sea concept will have restrictions on passenger capacity, since the dimensions required for sailing in two differing types of waterways mean there will be limitations to just how much space can be allocated for cabins and other common areas such as restaurants. Also, the number of decks will be dictated by the vessel’s air draught.”

MEB said it was able to overcome these issues through solutions that included CFD modeling and towing tank tests to further optimise hull form as well as reinforcement through thickened steel sheeting in accordance with strength calculations. The result is a vessel that successfully conforms to modern cruise and hotel industry standards with improved comfort and a reasonable selection of modern amenities.

“The sea trials and the first operational sea and river voyages showed us that it is possible to create an effective hull design even with a greater length-to-beam ratio compared to most other passenger vessels,” the designer told Baird Maritime .

The four-deck Mustai Karim can accommodate 329 guests in 161 cabins in multiple classes as well as 144 crewmembers. The passenger cabins are mainly two-person staterooms with total areas ranging from 17 to 46 square metres each. The only exceptions are 11 suites including one designed specifically for passengers with limited mobility and an owner’s suite.

The onboard amenities consist of two restaurants including one with space for 329 guests, bars with panoramic views, a conference room with seating for 140 people, a wine cellar, a large sun deck, a live entertainment venue with 200 seats, a sports and fitness complex with spa, and a salon/barber shop. Access between the various passenger decks is via two lifts while all onboard spaces have internet connectivity and satellite TV.

The vessel’s communication and navigation electronics include Transas X- and S-band radars and GPS, a sonar and depth sounder from Skipper, a Sailor satcom, a Jupiter magnetic compass, a Navigat gyrocompass, and a Sperry Marine autopilot. Power for the onboard electrical systems is supplied by three 760ekW diesel generators while a 150ekW generator will be reserved for emergency use.

Like the vessel itself, the onboard array of lifesaving equipment is fully compliant to Russian River Register (RRR) rules. The equipment includes two Palfinger 48-passenger fast rescue boats, 16 life rafts with capacity for 25 people each, and two marine evacuation systems that will enable the occupants to safely abandon ship without having to enter the water.

“To further improve fire safety,” MEB told Baird Maritime , “the vessel’s interior has been divided into main vertical zones with constructive and thermal barriers and installed detection and automatic sprinkler systems. We also made sure to limit the use of potentially flammable materials.”

The designer also configured the interior spaces so as to provide a passive means of restricting the spread of flames. This lowers the risk of fire reaching the escape routes in the event of an emergency.

Mustai Karim was built for Vodohod in fulfilment of a shipbuilding contract awarded by local conglomerate Mashpromlizing. The vessel is now being operated out of Moscow to destination cities that include Saint Petersburg, Astrakhan, and Rostov-on-Don.

Five star MS "Mustai Karim" Launching Ceremony

 September 11, 2019 was the day when Vodohod launched a new cruise ship "Mustai Karim" as a part of innovative project PV300.

The grand launching ceremony was held at the "Krasnoe Sormovo" shipyard in Nizhny Novgorod.

This new cruise ship has been named after the famous Bashkir poet, writer, and playwright Mustai Karim, whose 100th anniverary is celebrated this year.

 Mustafa Safich Karimov or Mustai Karim (1919 - 2005) is a soviet author of more than a hundred poetry and prose collections, and dramatic works.

MS "Mustai Karim" is a luxury "hotel on the water" with 329 passenger capacity offering   5-star service.

The ship features different categories of cabins, two restaurants, bars, a large sun deck, a fitness center with sauna and hammam, a conference hall, a library, availability of Internet and satellite television. Two passenger elevators connect the decks of the ship. 

More than three thousand residents of Nizhny Novgorod attended the ship's launching ceremony, becaming a real festival of the region.

MS "Mustai Karim" is the best ship in the product line of the Vodohod Company. She will make her first river cruise with passengers in May 2020.

Sviyazhsk is a legendary island city in the Republic of Tatarstan, which was laid down on the orders of Ivan the Terrible as a stronghold in campaigns in Kazan. After the conquest of the capital of the Kazan Khanate, it lost its military significance and became a quiet monastery town. A number of architectural monuments have been preserved in Sviyazhsk, among which you can see one of the oldest wooden churches in Russia - Troitskaya (XVI century), built back in the Uglich forests and part of the famous fortress. Currently, the island of Sviyazhsk is one of the key attractions of the Republic of Tatarstan.

Cheboksary - the capital of the Republic of Chuvashia, is located on the right bank of the Volga river. Over the five-hundred-year history, the city has seen the rebels of Ivan Bolotnikov, the freemen of Stepan Razin, and the squads of Emelyan Pugachev. The Vvedensky Cathedral, two churches of the Troika Monastery, the Church of the Assumption of the Mother of God are preserved in the old part of the city. Monuments of architecture are organically combined with the modern enbankment, decorated with a lattice with a national ornament.

Nizhny Novgorod is called the Volga capital. The city was founded in 1221 as a fortress on the right bank of the Volga river at the place where it merged with the Oka river. The city is rich in architectural monuments. This is the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, on the territory of which there is the Archangel Cathedral, the existing Annunciation and Pechersky Monasteries, the Christmas Church, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and many other monuments. The city is a large industrial, cultural and transport center of the Middle Volga.

Gorodets, located on the Cyril Mountains, was founded in 1152 by Yuri Dolgorukiy. The old part of Gorodets is located on Prince's Hill, from where you can admire the panorama of the Gorky hydroelectric complex and the reservoir. A walk through the old streets will leave an unforgettable impression. They are given a special charm by houses decorated with magnificent deaf carvings. One of these streets - Rubleva street - retained the look of the 19th century.

Yaroslavl is the unofficial capital of the Golden Ring of Russia and the oldest city on the Volga with a history of more than 1000 years. Many attractions are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is famous for examples of ancient Russian architecture, magnificent landscapes of the Volga and unique museums. The famous Russian poet N. A. Nekrasov spent his childhood in Yaroslavl. Today Yaroslavl is a large industrial center.

This jewel of the Golden Ring of Russia dates back to 937 AD, and so is one of the nation’s oldest cities. Its gem-like architecture includes the gold and blue-domed Church of St. Dmitry on the Blood. This is the place to savour traditional Russian life and walk inside the ancient Kremlin.

If the passengers come onboard earlier than 14.00 they can explore the ship and take a short rest in bars, on decks or other public places onboard until your cabin is ready.

United Shipbuilding Corporation’s (USC) Krasnoye Sormovo Shipyard successfully completed sea trials on the new Russian sea-and-river cruise ship (Project PV300) ms Mustai Karim . The trials were carried out from November 15 through 20 in Gorky Reservoir just outside Chkalovsk in Nizhny Novgorod region.

Mooring tests along with a final systems' checking and re-checking will then be conducted on the cruiser in the months before delivery to the Russian river cruise company Vodokhod, which is scheduled for February next year.

Vessel's sistership (similarly designed / Project PV300LMPP-110) is the scheduled for inauguration in 2020 Pyotr Velikiy (Peter The Great) .
