Namchi or Namtse is the capital of the district of South Sikkim in the Indian state of Sikkim. The appellation Namchi means Sky (Nam) High (Chi) in Sikkimese.

Namchi is situated at an altitude of 1,675 m (5500 feet) above sea level. It is situated at a distance of 78 kilometres (48 mi) from the state capital Gangtok and 100 kilometres (62 mi) from the town of Siliguri, the nearest railhead and airport. Namchi lies off the road between Melli and Jorethang. Namchi is well connected to other towns in Sikkim and West Bengal. Jeeps and buses regularly ply between Namchi to Gangtok, Pelling, Jorethang, Kalimpong and Siliguri. It is home of the Buxa Formation of Mamley, the stromatolite bearing Dolomite Limestones, which has been declared national geological monument by the Geological Survey of India (GSI), for their protection, maintenance, promotion and enhancement of geotourism. One of the highlights of the town is the football stadium – the Bhaichung Stadium built by the Sikkimese government in honour of its most famous citizen, footballer Bhaichung Bhutia who owns a number of football schools all over India. "The Gold Cup" football tournament is held in Bhaichung Stadium almost every year. Football teams from all over India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan vie for the honour which draws lot of crowds from all over Sikkim. Historically, Namchi was the place where Pende Ongmoo, the treacherous princess who poisoned one of the Chogyals of Sikkim, was caught and killed for her deed. Legend says her spirit still haunts the foothills of Ghurpisey.

This region experiences three major seasons in a year; summer, winter and rain storm. March to May is a good time to visit Namchi when the temperature remains moderate. Another good time is between the months of September to November. If you want to attend the flower show festival, then visit during the month of February. Numerous species of Himalayan flowers bloom in beautiful shades. The annual tourism, culture and local food festival is held on the month of October.

Bagdogra Airport, West Bengal: This is the nearest major airport to Namchi, situated about 96 km away. From Bagdogra to Namchi:

By Taxi: Pre-paid taxis are readily available outside the airport. The journey to Namchi will take approximately 3 to 4 hours.
By Helicopter: Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation offers a helicopter service from Bagdogra to Gangtok. From Gangtok , you can continue by road to Namchi.

New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station: Located in Siliguri, West Bengal , NJP is the nearest major railway station to Namchi. It is well connected with major Indian cities.

From NJP to Namchi:

By Taxi: You can hire a taxi directly from NJP to Namchi. The journey will take around 3 to 3.5 hours.

Alternatively, if coming from Gangtok, located 80 km away, it’s convenient to first reach Gangtok and then drive down to Namchi. Gangtok, around 125 km from Bagdogra Airport, serves as the nearest town in Sikkim.

The closest railway station to Namchi is the New Jalpaiguri railway station in West Bengal, situated 98 km away via NH10. Namchi is 78 km from Gangtok, and the recommended route is to first travel to Gangtok and then proceed by road to Namchi. The railway station connects to major cities with regular train services, and both rented taxis and state-run buses are accessible at the station and in Gangtok for convenient travel to Namchi.

A good network of roads connects Namchi with the major cities and other places of the region. One can easily reach Namchi from neighbouring places like Gangtok, Pelling and Yukosom through National Highway 31A. Namchi is located 78 km from Gangtok and the most convenient way to reach Namchi is to first come to Gangtok and then from there drive down to Namchi. Rented taxis are easily available to reach Namchi.

Namchi is one of the main cities, and district headquarters of south Sikkim. Though just as developed as Gangtok, it retains its local colour, and is less touristy and crowded than Gangtok. It is located at an altitude of 1675m. The people of Namchi are mostly Nepalis, Bhutias and Sherpas. The word “namchi” literally translates to “the top of the sky” in Bhutia. As such, the city has splendid views of the hills, especially Kanchenjunga and the Rangeet valley, and is a great place to wander around and reconnect with nature. Fewer tourists makes the experience more refreshing. Namchi is one of the more populous cities of Sikkim. Revered by Buddhists for some of its grand sights, there are several legends floating around the many Buddhist sights around Namchi – some bizarre and some amusing.

Climate And Best Time To Visit

Namchi is pleasant most of the year round, and not as cold as many other cities in Sikkim. The best time to visit is from March-October. Winter is not advisable as commuting in the mountains is treacherous in the winter.

Getting There & Getting Around Namchi

Namchi is well connected by road to all the major cities and towns of Sikkim. The closest airport is Bagdogra airport, and the closest railway station is New Jalpaiguri railway station. Direct taxis ply from the airport and railway station; the alternative is to reach Gangtok or Pelling and book a taxi from there. It is best to book a taxi via a travel agent to go sight seeing around Namchi, as there are few options for public transport.

Namchi has both, natural, as well man-made tourist attractions which make it an intriguing place for travellers. Though the greatest charm is of the location of the city itself, which gives beautiful views of the Himalayas, there are other places and activities you can indulge yourself in while in Namchi.

SOLOPHOK CHAR DHAM

This is a tourist spot constructed by the Sikkim government under the Chief Minister of Sikkim. It is also known as Siddheshwar Dham, and was inaugurated in 2011. It is located on top of the Solopok Hill, a beautiful and ethereal location for the temple cum cultural complex. The complex features a recreation of the four sacred places of pilgrimage for Hindus – Badrinath, Jagannath, Dwarka and Rameshwaram – and a giant Shiva deity, which is 108 ft tall. The Shiva deity is accompanied by a Nandi. Twelve Shiva lingas representing the sacred jyotirlingas are also found in this complex. Opposite to the Shiva deity is another deity of Kirteshwara, who is another incarnation of Lord Shiva, who blessed Arjun with divine weapons to win the Mahabharat war. It also includes a Sai Baba Temple. The space is very quiet and gives a spiritual experience to anyone who visits.

The entire complex is maintained very well, and is always found to be clean. Restaurants serve delicious pure vegetarian food. It is accessed via paid parking, and there are facilities for the differently abled.

SAMDRUPTSE STATUE

An imposing 26 ft high deity of Guru Padmasambhava is built on the Samdruptse Hill near Namchi. This is another grand attraction that pulls crowds in large numbers. Located on a mountain top, the place is calm, and offers beautiful views of neighbouring mountains. The soft chants of “Om Mani Padme Hum” can be heard reverberating the entire space. The foundation stone of the statue was laid by H. H. Dalai Lama himself in 1997, and it was inaugurated by the Chief Minister in 2004.

NGADAK MONASTERY

An old monastery near Namchi, it was built during the reign of Chogyal Gyurmed Namgyal by Tensung Namgyal. After some damages during the earthquake of the 17th century, a new Gompa was added to the monastery. The word “Ngadak” means “promise” in Tibetan, and legend has it that whoever visits the monastery must promise to visit it again.
