Who are the Tour de France commentators?

Find out who's behind the mic and reporting on the ground for the respective Tour de France broadcasters

The Tour de France is cycling's biggest event and transcends the everyday fans of the sport to reach millions of people around the world.

Because of the level of interest, TV channels up their coverage and provide wall-to-wall live broadcast of the race as well as in-depth highlights programmes and analysis.

That enhancement of coverage includes recruiting the sport's top commentators and pundits to scrutinise the goings on in the race, but who are the people behind the voices we hear every day on television?

ITV Tour de France commentators

ITV has been a long-time broadcaster of the Tour de France on free-to-air television in the UK, and their line-up of commentators has been set for some time.

Commentary veteran Phil Liggett and the late Paul Sherwen provided commentary from a US feed up until 2016, when ITV brought in their own commentators. Journalist (and Rouleur columnist) Ned Boulting took over the mic along with former British pro and four-time Tour de France stage winner David Millar, and the pair have been working on the Tour for ITV ever since.

David Millar

Two-time British champion Peter Kennaugh works as a pundit on ITV, analysing the racing alongside another former pro and three-time Tour stage winner Chris Boardman and host Gary Imlach.

ITV also send reporters to work on the ground at the Tour. Author and journalist Daniel Friebe provides colour segments for the highlights programme as well interviewing riders pre- and post-stage. Another author and journalist Matt Rendall provides interviews and on the ground from the Tour as well.

Eurosport/GCN Tour de France commentators

In the UK, Global Cycling Network have upped the ante after launching their online race streaming platform in 2020. Since being acquired by Discovery, subsequently part of  Warner Bros. Discovery, the GCN and Eurosport coverage has converged and now holds pre-race and post-race shows every day, as well as start-to-finish coverage without adverts (on streaming).

In the commentary box is a mix of Eurosport veterans and newer recruits. Commentator and author Carlton Kirby has been on Eurosport's cycling coverage for a very long time, and shares the lead commentary duty with another long-time Eurosport commentator Rob Hatch, interchanging throughout the day. There's also the voice of Jonathan Harris-Bass from Eurosport HQ to talk about food and other stuff when the action lulls.

They're joined by former pro and four-time Tour de France green jersey and five-time stage winner (amongst many other victories) Sean Kelly on analysis commentary. Another Tour great, Australian Robbie McEwen, who sprinted to 12 stage victories and three green jerseys, joined the channel this year also drops in on commentary as well as appearing in the studio programmes either side of the race.

Likewise, GCN presenter and former British pro Daniel Lloyd combines stints on commentary with appearing in the studio.

The analysis show either side of the race is hosted by journalist and presenter (and Rouleur columnist) Orla Chennaoui. She is joined every day by McEwen, Lloyd and former British champion Adam Blythe in the studio to discuss the daily happenings.

On the ground, retired Austrian pro Bernhard Eisel, former British champion Matt Stephens, and former British pro Hannah Walker interview riders.

Over in the US, British commentator and journalist Phil Liggett is covering his 50th edition of the Tour de France and his 45th as a commentator, having first travelled to the Tour in 1973.

He's joined by former US pro Bob Roll on co-comms, with NBC journalist Steve Porino and former South African pro (and Tour de France stage winner) Robbie Hunter reporting from the ground.

As well as hosting wall-to-wall coverage, NBC also has analysis programmes for each stage, with retired US pro and Vuelta a España winner Chris Horner joined by another retired American pro, Christian Vande Velde, to provide expert insight. Presenter Paul Burmeister hosts the pre- and post-race shows.

Recently retired pro Brent Bookwalter will join the production as a cycling analyst, alongside longtime broadcasters Phil Liggett, Bob Roll, Christian Vande Velde, and reporter Steve Porino.

American cycling fans will see another familiar face on NBC’s Tour de France telecast this July.

Bookwalter is one of two new hires for the telecast. New Zealand’s Sam Bewley, who raced in the WorldTour for Team Radioshack and Orica-GreenEdge, is also making his debut in July.

  • Brent Bookwalter to vice chair Pro Cyclist Foundation

The broadcast addition marks the latest chapter in Bookwalter’s career. He raced professionally for 16 seasons, competing in the Tour on four occasions. He was a key member of BMC Racing’s 2011 Tour squad, which helped Cadel Evans capture the yellow jersey.

Bookwalter also competed in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He ended his professional road cycling career after the 2021 season while racing for Mitchelton-Scott.

In 2022 Bookwalter worked as a broadcaster for the streaming service FloBikes and also raced some gravel events.

The Tour returns to NBC this July as part of a recently signed six-year broadcast extension with race organizer ASO to show the race in the United States.

NBC has yet to reveal the specific details of its 2023 live coverage plans. However, in previous years, the network has shown live coverage of the event on streaming platform Peacock, and on linear TV channels USA Network and NBC.

This Former Pro Cyclist Is Commentating the Tour de France Femmes and She’s Crushing It

Hannah Walker is bringing a lifelong passion for the sport plus in-depth knowledge and experience to this year’s race.

hannah walker twitter selfie

No offense to Phil Liggett and Bob Roll and their disappointing performance as commentators for NBC/Peacock during Stage 1 of this year’s Tour de France Femmes, but Walker is such a refreshing voice in the mix. She and McCrossen regularly commentate together on pro women’s races, and the duo bring a professional tone backed up by a depth of knowledge.

In an interview for SBS Sport , about commentating the Tour de France Femmes, Walker said, “It’s been such a wonderful experience to see where the sport has come over the last 10 years, and to be at this moment now and see these riders making history, and to be be able to commentate on this and be on the ground and see the atmosphere that builds during the day and at the finish line…it’s incredible to be a part of.”

Just like in pro cycling, where women have had to fight their way in, the same has been true for commentating.

Walker says she grew up watching the men’s Tour de France and other world tours, and always wanted to watch women, but the coverage was never available. “It was very rare that we could even see the women’s side on television, and look at where we are now. You can see every world tour and women’s race live on television.”

Walker’s first Grand Tour coverage was for La Vuelta a España in 2020. Since then she’s covered numerous races and tours on the men’s side and the women’s side. We look forward to more sharp insights from Walker on everything from team dynamics to technical logistics throughout the week!

Tour de France Commentary: A Change Of The Guard

' src=

Several years on from major generational change, Matthew Keenan, Bridie O’Donnell and Robbie McEwen are again providing the call for not just Aussie audiences – but the English language world feed of the Tour de France.

In 2017 Keenan & McEwen replaced the highly-respected commentary team of Phil Liggett, known around the world as ‘the voice of cycling’, and his long-time friend and co-commentator, Paul Sherwen. Sadly Paul Sherwen passed away in December 2018 – you can read our tribute to Paul here.

nbc tour de france 2022 commentators

“Matthew Keenan and Robbie McEwen are at the helm of SBS’s commentary and Australian voices will call every stage from start to finish,” SBS said at the time.

Keenan & McEwen Go Global

“Three-time green jersey winner Robbie McEwen and renowned cycling commentator Matthew Keenan also take up the new role as commentators for the Tour de France’s official world feed, broadcast in over 50 territories.”

Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen continue to offer analysis and insight into stages, regions and individuals. The pair will also continue to provide Tour de France commentary for the American NBC network.

Following last year’s announcement Matt Keenan told AAP he was ‘pinching himself’. “Phil is an iconic figure in sports broadcasting,” Keenan said. “You don’t try to replace him — you can’t.”

Your Thoughts?

Over on the Bicycling Australia Facebook page many continue to have their say on the change of guard. Responses have been mixed, with many saying Liggett and Sherwen are, and will always be,  the voices of the tour.

“Going to miss Phil and Paul. What they do well is capture the romance of the Tour,” wrote Ben Kingsbury.

“For me The Tour is not all about the cycling. It’s about the food and the chateaus and the landmarks and the spectacle. Matt and Robbie are excellent with dealing with the technicalities of racing but struggle with the rest. It is wonderful to watch as the cyclists pass a 16th century monastery, the camera pans back and Paul gives the perfect French pronunciation and proceeds to explain from personal experience details of what we are looking at. I understand Phil in particular is a little past it and mixes up the cyclists names, and uses his usual phrases such as “going into the red zone” but for me he will be sadly missed. The Tour won’t be the same without the duo.”

Karyn McDonald wrote “As much as I love Robbie McEwen and Matthew Keenan, Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen are THE voices of Le Tour de France as they have been for many years. Won’t be quite the same without them…their dulcet tones of commentary will be sorely missed.”

Many have expressed bitter disapointed, a stream of followers clearly upset with the SBS decision.

Michael Begley: “Nooooooo!! Big mistake SBS. Phil and Paul capture the beauty of the whole tour. Not just the cycling.”

Peter Signorini: “Keenan and McEwan are competent enough, but just boring in comparison to Ligget and Sherwin.”

Shaun Walford: “Phil Liggett is the best commentator in the world for cycling, what’s the point in getting rid of him?”

We are keen to hear your thoughts, have your say in comments below.

There's also the voice of Jonathan Harris-Bass from Eurosport HQ to talk about food and other stuff when the action lulls.

nbc tour de france 2022 commentators

Chris Horner , the only American Grand Tour champion of the last 29 years, will make his Tour de France commentary debut with NBC Sports next month.

Horner, who became the oldest Grand Tour winner at the 2013 Vuelta a España at age 41, will be part of NBC Sports’ traveling studio coverage of the Tour de France, hosted by Paul Burmeister , with retired American cyclist Christian Vande Velde reprising his role.

Bob Roll will move from the studio to call the action with Phil Liggett for the Tour that starts July 6. Liggett’s longtime partner, Paul Sherwen , died Dec. 2 at age 62 after being involved in 40 Tours de France.

Horner made his NBC Sports commentary debut for Liège-Bastogne-Liège on April 28.

“Completely different than anything I’m used to,” he said. “I really just learned that it’s harder than it looks on TV. On TV, [viewers] just can’t understand how you miss that call or that play, but when you’re [a commentator] watching it on the screen and picking up some facts on the computer, looking down, looking up, it makes it kind of difficult to catch all of the action.”

Horner, a 2012 Olympian, competed in seven Tours with a best finish of ninth in 2010. His Grand Tour career ended at the 2014 Tour, but he still rides, having done the Cascade Classic in his native Oregon three weeks ago.

“I still carry a pro license, but I don’t really consider myself a pro by any means,” Horner said. “It’s no longer my job or my career or anything like that. I just love racing my bike. It’s an easier transition to keep racing a little bit and transition into the non-bike racing world.”

Watch world-class cycling events throughout the year with the NBC Sports Gold Cycling Pass , including all 21 stages of the Tour de France live & commercial-free, plus access to renowned races like La Vuelta, Paris-Roubaix, the UCI World Championships and many more.
