Who are the Tour de France commentators?

Find out who's behind the mic and reporting on the ground for the respective Tour de France broadcasters

The Tour de France is cycling’s biggest event and transcends the everyday fans of the sport to reach millions of people across the world. And because of this heightened level of interest, TV channels up their coverage, providing start-to-finish live coverage as well as in-depth pre- and post-show talks, highlights, and analysis.

So, with every one tuning in for a glimpse of the action, recruiting the top sport’s commentators and pundits to scrutinise the goings on in the race is an important job for the TV bosses. So, who are the people behind the voices we hear every day for five hours a day? We take a look at some of the commentators for this year’s race.

ITV Tour de France commentators

ITV has been a long-time broadcaster of the Tour de France on free-to-air television in the UK, and their line-up of commentators has been set for some time. Commentary veteran Phil Liggett and the late Paul Sherwen provided commentary from a US feed up until 2016, when ITV brought in their own commentators. Journalist (and Rouleur columnist) Ned Boulting took over the mic along with former British pro and four-time Tour de France stage winner David Millar, and the pair have been working on the Tour for ITV ever since. Presenter Gary Imlach hosts ITV’s highlights show for each stage, who started his 35th Tour de France this year.

David Millar

Eurosport/Discovery+ Tour de France commentators

In the commentary box for Discovery+/Europort is commentator and author Carlton Kirby, who has been on Eurosport's cycling coverage for a very long time, and shares the lead commentary duty with another long-time Eurosport commentator Rob Hatch, interchanging throughout the day. They are also joined by four-time green jersey winner Sean Kelly, 12-time stage winner Robbie McEwen, and former British champion Adam Blythe. There's also the voice of Jonathan Harris-Bass ( @jhbfoodiecyclist ) from HQ to talk about food and other stuff when the action lulls.

The analysis show titled The Breakaway either side of the race is hosted by journalist and presenter (and Rouleur columnist) Orla Chennaoui. She is joined every day by McEwen, Blythe, and 2012 Olympic gold medalist Dani Rowe in the studio to discuss the daily happenings.

On the ground at the race, former pro Hannah Walker and Anders Mieke, interview riders before and after each stage. On the back of the motorbike, following the peloton is Grand Tour stage winner Jens Voigt, former pro Matt Stephens, and Blythe, at different points in the three-week race.

NBC Sports Tour de France commentators

Phil Liggett and Bob Roll NBC

Over in the US, British commentator and journalist Phil Liggett is covering his 52nd edition of the Tour de France, having first travelled to the Tour in 1973. He's joined by former US pro Bob Roll on co-comms, with NBC journalist Steve Porino and former South African pro (and Tour de France stage winner) Robbie Hunter reporting from the ground.

As well as hosting wall-to-wall coverage, NBC also has analysis programmes for each stage, with retired US pro and Vuelta a España winner Chris Horner joined by another retired American pro, Christian Vande Velde, to provide expert insight. Presenter Paul Burmeister hosts the pre- and post-race shows.

Paul Burmeister will host daily pre-race and post-race studio coverage alongside Brent Bookwalter and Tejay van Garderen, who is making his NBC Sports debut as a Tour de France analyst.

Mark Cavendish crosses the finish line and raises a fist in the air

SAINT-VULBAS, France — Mark Cavendish wrote a new chapter of Tour de France history in what is expected to be his last appearance at cycling’s biggest race.

The veteran Isle of Man sprinter broke Eddy Merckx’s long-standing record for most career Tour de France stage wins with his 35th victory on Wednesday.

The 39-year-old Cavendish sprinted for the win in the fifth stage of the Tour, pulling away some 100 meters from the line despite being bunched in. He crossed the line ahead of Jasper Philipsen and then celebrated with teammates.

Norwegian rider Alexander Kristoff, who had crashed earlier, finished third. They were given the same time of 4 hours, 8 minutes, 46 seconds.

Sixteen years after his first Tour stage win, Cavendish spoke of his constant hunger for victory.

“I always needed to win one more,” said Cavendish, who was joined by his children on the podium. “It takes a lot to get there every year. I’ve got incredible people around me.”

Two-time champion Tadej Pogacar narrowly avoided a crash and finished nestled in the main pack in 35th place. While Pogacar retained the race leader’s yellow jersey, the day belonged to Cavendish.

He equaled Merckx’s mark of 34 wins during the 2021 Tour and went close to No. 35 in the seventh stage last year when he was narrowly beaten by Philipsen. He crashed a day later and broke his right collarbone.

Merckx, the Belgian considered the most dominant rider in cycling history, won his 34 individual stages at the Tour from 1969-75.

Cavendish’s decision to give it one more shot paid off.

“I just wanted to get the run-in to do it. I’m a little bit in disbelief. Astana put a big gamble on this year to make sure we’re good at the Tour de France,” Cavendish said. “We’ve done it.”

With his 2023 race ending early, Cavendish decided to put off retirement by a year and came back to try again.

Finally, Cavendish made cycling history, after winning his first Tour stage back in 2008.

Other riders were happy for Cavendish, with several stopping to speak with or hug him after the 177.4-kilometer (110-mile) leg from Saint-Jean-De-Maurienne to Saint-Vulbas

Merckx amassed his wins in an era during which his domination was such that he earned the nickname “The Cannibal.” Unlike Merckx, one of four riders to win the Tour five times, Cavendish has never won the overall title, or come close.

But Cavendish’s longevity among his fellow Tour sprinters has no equal.

He won the Tour de France best sprinter’s green jersey twice. He also won stages at all three Grand Tours — the others are the Giro d’Italia and Spanish Vuelta — and became a world champion in 2011.

Cavendish joined Astana after his contract with Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl expired and he was overlooked for the 2022 Tour.

Cavendish had faced a difficult start to this Tour. During the first stage, he appeared to struggle with stomach and heat issues.

“I know how it works, my trainer and everyone around me knows how it is,” Cavendish said. “I’ve done 15 Tours de France. I don’t like to have bad days, I don’t like to suffer but I know it’s just in the head and to push through it.”

Meanwhile, Pogacar has another flat stage to get through safely Thursday, having reclaimed the leader’s jersey Tuesday with a brilliant attack near the top of the race’s first big mountain pass.

On Wednesday, he was simply relieved to avoid crashing.

“We were in the bunch and then suddenly something came up in the middle from nowhere. The guys in front of me braked and we touched wheels a little bit, but luckily I escaped,” he said. “I reacted on instinct and was very lucky.”

The 25-year-old Slovenian leads overall by 45 seconds from Tour debutant Remco Evenepoel, the Vuelta and world champion in 2022. Pogacar is 50 seconds ahead of two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard — the Danish rider who was badly injured in a high-speed crash at the Tour of Basque Country in early April.

Pogacar is aiming for the rare Giro-Tour double, and for his third Tour title after wins in 2020 and 2021. The last rider to win the Giro and the Tour the same year was the late Marco Pantani in 1998.

Wednesday’s stage saw Clement Russo and Matteo Vercher forming a breakaway after 35 kilometers (22 miles).

Given that French riders won the first two stages through Romain Bardet and Kevin Vauquelin , this may have motivated them. With rain falling, Russo and Vercher were caught with 36 kilometers (22 miles) left.

Stage 6 on Thursday is again suited for sprinters, going through vineyards to Dijon on a mainly flat trek of around 100 miles. The first individual time trial is on Friday.

NBC Isn’t Streaming the Tour de France World Feed. Fans Are Fuming

Tour de France fans in the United States are pissed . The fan response to NBC’s decision not to broadcast the World Feed for the Tour de France alongside NBC’s U.S. feed this year has been met with serious dissatisfaction.

In the past, fans could choose between the World Feed, which covered just the race happening, and the NBC Feed, which interspersed the race with commentary and past highlights. This year, NBC Sports’ commentators include Phil Liggett, Bob Roll, Steve Porino, Christian Vande Velde, Paul Burmeister, Sam Bewley, and Brent Bookwalter. The complaints aren’t really about the commentators themselves, but about the cuts in the middle of racing action, the constant ad breaks, and the fact that the stages aren’t available to watch as simply really, really long races.

These two feeds—NBC’s bonus content-filled stages and the World Feed, which is just the racing action—appeal to different fan bases. It’s easy to see how a newer cycling fan would enjoy hearing from the U.S. commentators and getting more context for the race while watching it for the first time. But it’s also understandable that longtime cycling fans prefer the strictly moment-to-moment race coverage from the World Feed.

According to Dan Masonson, NBC’s VP of Communications, in prior years, multiple feeds were used to “accommodate multiple platforms.”

“Now, with the event almost exclusively on Peacock with the exception of a handful of stages simulcast on NBC, we are programming a single feed with our popular and longtime Tour de France announce team,” Masonson told Bicycling .

When asked if the World Feed would ever reappear, he added, “We don’t have our coverage for future years planned at this time.”

What has people annoyed with the Peacock stream versus the World Feed? A blend of commercials, commentators, and B-roll footage that breaks up the coverage.

@NBCSports your Tour de France coverage is abysmal. Just show the race. The race. Not featurettes, not talking heads, the race. @peacock where is the World Feed?? It’s so much better… 🙄 — Erica Dorfler (@ericadorfler) July 1, 2024

“In prior years, it looked like they were using the same video feeds as the World Feed but with Bob and Phil [NBC’s commentators] instead of Ant and Nico [the commentators on the World Feed],” said one commenter on a Reddit thread dedicated to this year’s coverage.

“I could have lived with that. But now it looks like the raw feeds with all of their own cuts and graphics, which I can’t stand. I’m not enjoying their packages, the constant useless scroll, any of it. I won’t be able to make it three weeks.”

“I’m regretting getting Peacock even for a month,” added another. “Wow, same ads over and over. Who in their right mind is planning their trip to the Olympics a month before the games? That ad was shown in every ad break.”

“So unwatchable. I didn’t make it to the first commercial break before I shut it off. I am looking at not enjoying my favorite July pastime for the first time in a long time. Sad, sad American,” said one more.

“The people who broadcast cycling seem to hate the people who watch cycling,” exclaimed another Reddit thread. “There’s no other explanation.”

There’s even a petition to bring back the World Feed. But in the meantime, many U.S. fans are opting for ‘nontraditional’ ways of viewing it rather than streaming on Peacock.

It will be interesting to see Peacock’s viewership numbers at the end of the Tour compared to previous years. Hopefully, any drop in longtime fans will prompt a return of the World Feed option for next year rather than cuts in coverage, considering NBC has the Tour rights through 2028 .

The Tour de France started. Does anyone in America care?

At least one american has a chance at the podium in the world’s most prestigious bicycle race.

nbc tour de france 2022 commentators

By Dennis Romboy

The Tour de France, the world’s premier bicycle race, started in Italy over the weekend but will not end in Paris for the first time since 1905 because of the Olympics.

The race won’t have its traditional finish on the Champs-Élysées in the French capital due to security and logistical reasons associated with the Summer Games. The 111th edition of the Tour will conclude in Nice on July 21. The Olympics will open in Paris five days later. The 21-day race, covering 2,173 miles, set off June 29 from Italy, marking another first.

And yet in another first, Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay became the first Black rider to win a Tour de France stage, sprinting to the finish line ahead of the pack in the 144-mile third leg from Piacenza to Turin on Monday.

While the Tour de France draws tens of millions of viewers worldwide every year, American audiences have largely passed on professional cycling since the fall from grace of Lance Armstrong. This year’s firsts and other storylines could change that.

NBC News reports that after years of disinterest, American viewership might be on the rebound thanks in part to the release of “Unchained,” a Netflix show by the producers of the blockbuster “Drive to Survive” docuseries, which focuses on Formula 1 racing. “‘Unchained’ goes behind the scenes of cycling’s biggest rivalries, capturing in vivid detail the commitment, sacrifice and zeal needed to conquer the Tour de France. Think violent crashes, uncontrollable sobbing and inter-team mudslinging,” per NBC.

Who are the Americans in the Tour de France?

While Jonas Vingegaard, of Denmark, and Tadej Pogacar, of Slovenia, who have each won two of the last four races, figure to battle for the top spot again, at least one of the three Americans in this year’s Tour has a shot to make the podium.

Matteo Jorgensen, who grew up in Boise, Idaho, is being touted as one of the top riders on the world tour after winning Paris-Nice this year, the first American to do so since 2006. He also won Dwars door Vlaanderen and finished second in the Critérium du Dauphiné, just eight seconds behind Slovenian Primoz Roglič, a pre-race Tour de France favorite. A teammate of Vingegaard on Visma-Lease a Bike, Jorgensen showed well in the Tour in 2022 and 2023.

“This guy has improved so much over this year,” said Tejay van Garderen, a former grand tour rider who is making his debut as a race commentator on NBC Sports this year. “From what I’ve seen from Matteo Jorgenson, he can podium in the Tour de France.”

Visma-Lease a Bike lead director sportif Merijn Zeeman downplayed Jorgenson’s status as a title contender this year and emphasized his role in supporting Vingegaard.

“I really believe that Matteo Jorgenson will be a very good rider in the future, he will have a chance to win the Tour de France in his career as well but he is still developing,” Zeeman told reporters last week before the race, per Cycling News .

A crash Sunday on Stage 2 left Jorgenson with road rash but he still finished with the main group of riders. He sits 13th overall after Monday’s stage, just 21 seconds behind the leaders.

“I surprisingly feel quite OK, when I went down I was going super fast so I expected to be much more hurt. But I got up and somehow I just lost skin, basically,” he said, according to Cycling News .

Jorgenson’s cycling career began on the streets of Idaho’s capital city, with the Boise Young Rider Development Squad or BYRDS, per the Idaho Statesman .

“I am super proud to be from Boise and come from such a cycling-friendly city,” said Jorgenson, who turned 25 on Monday. “It was an amazing place to grow up and start cycling with BYRDS.”

A versatile cyclist, Jorgenson is also a strong contender for the Tour’s white jersey, which recognizes the best rider under age 26.

The other two Americans in this year’s Tour de France are Neilson Powless and Sean Quinn, who both ride for the Education First-EasyPost team. Powless is riding his fifth Tour, while Quinn is making his debut. Powless is known for getting into breakaways and climbing. He led the King of the Mountain classification for half of the 2023 race before ultimately being edged out by another rider.

Powless, 26, who grew up in Roseville, California, is the first tribally recognized Native North American to compete in the Tour de France. His late grandfather belonged to the Oneida tribe. Powless is 25% Oneida, the minimum percentage required for tribal membership, according to Outside magazine.

Quinn, a native of Los Angeles, grew up watching the Tour with his parents and soon was riding mountains in California pretending they were the Alps. He excels as a climber and is a good sprinter.

Why is Sepp Kuss not racing in the Tour?

While Jorgenson pushes for a top-three finish, Sepp Kuss, of Durango, Colorado, is watching his Visma-Lease a Bike teammates from home after not recovering fully from COVID-19, which forced him to drop out of the Critérium du Dauphiné, per Cycling News.

“Bummed to miss out on the TdF this year after struggling with COVID complications now for a few weeks,” Kuss posted on Instagram last week.

Kuss has arguably been Vingegaard’s most important support rider in the past two Tours, pulling him through the grueling mountain stages and putting him in position to win. Kuss’ own major wins include the Vuelta a España in 2023, Stage 15 of the Tour de France in 2021 and the now-defunct Tour of Utah in 2018.

Who was the last American to win the Tour de France?

Greg LeMond is the only American winner of the Tour de France, winning it in 1986, 1989 and 1990. Armstrong won a record seven consecutive times from 1999 to 2005 but was stripped of his titles after an investigation into doping allegations found he used performance-enhancing drugs throughout his career. Floyd Landis in 2006 would have been the third American winner but was disqualified after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs.

An American has not pulled on the race leader’s yellow jersey outright since van Garderen wore it for one day in 2012, though he was involved in a rare tie for the jersey after a team time trial in 2018. His teammate was awarded the overall race lead because of higher finishes in previous stages of the race.

Kuss’ 2021 stage win ended a 10-year drought for Americans.

NBC Sports, Peacock and the Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.) today announced a six-year extension for exclusive U.S. media rights for the Tour de France.

Beginning with the 111 th Tour de France in June 2024, Peacock will become the exclusive home of the Tour de France in the United States through 2029 with live start-to-finish coverage of every stage . Select stages will also simulcast live on NBC throughout the three-week event. Daily coverage on Peacock will include NBC Sports-produced pre- and post-race studio shows, full-stage replays, highlights, stage recaps, rider interviews, and more.

As part of its previous agreement, NBC Sports and Peacock will present full live coverage of 110th Tour de France this summer (July 1-23, 2023). NBC Sports’ full coverage schedule for the 2023 Tour de France will be announced in the coming months.

“We’re excited to reach this long-term agreement with A.S.O. to present the world’s most prestigious cycling event live on Peacock for years to come,” said Jon Miller, President, Acquisitions and Partnerships, NBC Sports. “With the Tour de France and our extensive cycling portfolio, we are proud to continue as the home of cycling in the United States, while continuing to bolster Peacock’s best-in-class slate of live sports programming.”

“We are delighted to be able to extend our long-term partnership with NBCUniversal, which promotes the Tour de France and all the major A.S.O. sporting events to the American public on a cross-platform basis, including women’s cycling such as the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift that NBC Sports has supported since the first edition in July 2022. The combined coverage via Peacock, which will show the entire races from the beginning to the end, and network television, will ensure that everyone has access to the best of world cycling. Super fans won’t miss any of the twists and turns that cycling holds. NBC Sports will remain the home of cycling in the United States for another six years and in 2029 we will celebrate the 29th anniversary of a historic partnership that is proof of America’s sincere love for cycling and the Tour,” declared Yann Le Moenner, CEO of A.S.O.

As part of the agreement, NBC Sports will present many additional A.S.O. events throughout the year, including cycling events such as La Vuelta a España, which is the final Grand Tour event of the year following the Tour de France, La Vuelta Feminina by Carrefour.es, the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, the Spring Classics including the men’s and women’s Paris-Roubaix, Paris-Roubaix Femmes avec Zwift, the Ardennaises Classics (men and women) that are La Fleche Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Criterium du Dauphine, and Paris Tours. Also included are the Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris, the world’s second-largest marathon, and the Dakar Rally , the world’s most challenging off-road endurance race.

Comcast/NBC Sports has served as the U.S. home of the Tour de France since 2001.
